- 0:00Keno Wallace. Man, I'll tell you what, Johnny,
- 0:05they say Bill Murray's backstage.
- 0:07I just got goosebumps. Carl Spagler.
- 0:10Who are you going to call Ghostbusters?
- 0:13Hey, hang out here for a long time, man.
- 0:15He's here. And he also can do your your
- 0:18golf course grass too. Oh, yeah, do it.
- 0:23Cinderella boy. He was the Cinderella boy at one
- 0:26time. Guys, we're fired up for racing,
- 0:29man. This is one of the greatest
- 0:30events year in and year out. And Kenny Wallace, now Worldwide
- 0:33Technology Raceway, has earned the right to have a playoff
- 0:37race. Guys, this is big.
- 0:39Hey, I mean who God ordered this weather we are so thankful like
- 0:45he's. Rusty did your brother Rusty.
- 0:46Rusty. Yes, that's Rusty's nickname.
- 0:50Like when Rodger Penske's coming, Rusty goes clean the
- 0:53shop up. Rodger's coming.
- 0:54I'm like when Rusty talks, you think EF Hutton talks?
- 0:59Everybody's listen. When Rusty talks, I get nervous.
- 1:02I tell my girls. I say Uncle Rusty's coming.
- 1:05Oh, God, give me the vacuum cleaner.
- 1:08All right, Johnny, we got them backstage waiting and they love
- 1:12Saint Louis. All I hear is the reason they
- 1:15like Saint Louis, all these drivers, is because they do it
- 1:18right here. We had City STL Soccer, we got
- 1:23the Cardinals, we got Kenny Schrader Racing last night at
- 1:28Pegley. And we have the Wallace family.
- 1:35I'll tell you what, we got last week's winner backstage right
- 1:38now. You ready to?
- 1:39Roll, I'm ready and I want to get video too.
- 1:41Oh, you're going to do it right? Well, yeah, you're going to
- 1:43enter this. You run this thing, these new
- 1:46bangled phones. What?
- 1:47Do you press? I don't know how to run this
- 1:49thing, but I got it. I'm ready.
- 1:50Kenny, look at this. Kelly and gentlemen, he's won
- 1:54back-to-back. Southern 500.
- 1:57He's the pride of Indiana. Chase Briscoe.
- 2:05What's happening? Look what you doing The cowboy
- 2:08walk. Yeah, I.
- 2:09Don't know about that you. Walking out here like Harry
- 2:11Gant, hey. I think you walk a little funny
- 2:14though, after racing at Darlington, don't you?
- 2:16What a tough race track chase. But that's, you know, I think
- 2:20when people look at some of these big race tracks, it's kind
- 2:23of a team victory. It's always a team win.
- 2:26But when you win at Darlington, that's is that one a little bit
- 2:29more on the driver's shoulders. I don't know, I mean, they're
- 2:32definitely all team wins. And darling, it's just the
- 2:34Southern 500 in general, I feel like it's one of the hardest
- 2:36races to win just because, I mean, every weekend it takes it
- 2:39all over there especially. I mean, we're doing so many pit
- 2:42stops. I think we had 11 something pit
- 2:43stops last week. You know, your car has to be
- 2:45good on the short run, the long run, you know, just the car goes
- 2:49through so many phases there from day to night and everything
- 2:51else. So yeah, it's pretty cool to to
- 2:53just even honestly race in the Southern 500, let alone win it.
- 2:56That was definitely a special weekend for sure.
- 2:58Crown jewel. So much to talk about that
- 3:01Southern 500, but I'm I'm going to get in the seat with you.
- 3:04They're they're waving the white flag we come off with.
- 3:06Two, it's uncomfortable. You look in your mirrors, you
- 3:09see Tyler breathing. Take the fans and myself.
- 3:13You know he's going to die by you.
- 3:16Yeah, I definitely knew he was going to die by me.
- 3:18You know. I knew though, that in three and
- 3:19four, at least in Darlington, on the long run, you know, as long
- 3:22as you just don't get in the fence, it's really hard,
- 3:24truthfully for somebody to pass you just because there's no grip
- 3:27once you get, you know, below the wall.
- 3:29So I knew as long as I just made a decent corner and didn't plug
- 3:32it into the fence, I'd be all right.
- 3:33But yeah, Tyler truthfully got way closer than I thought he
- 3:36would. You know, I think he was
- 3:37probably 3 or 4 car links back and I mean he was two inches
- 3:41away from getting into my left reporter panel.
- 3:43So yeah, it was definitely a good race.
- 3:45It was way harder than it needed to be at the end.
- 3:47But yeah, he was just really fast there at the end.
- 3:50I just didn't really have much left in the tank.
- 3:51It would have been interesting if there was, you know, five
- 3:53more laps for. Sure, Johnny, I don't mean to
- 3:55interrupt you, but I got to, I got to acknowledge it.
- 3:58Listen to this, everybody, Darlington, the track that's too
- 4:02tough to tame. He led 309 laps and Johnny, it's
- 4:10like the Saint Louis Blues. We played all these games and it
- 4:13comes down to the last game. It come down to the last corner.
- 4:16That's insane. Yeah, it is crazy how you could
- 4:19run, you know, 500 miles, right? And it comes down to I think the
- 4:22margin of victory is maybe 2/10 of a second.
- 4:24It's crazy. And then they're just in
- 4:26general, you know, I've been fortunate to win at Darlington
- 4:28three Times Now, and all three of them came down to literally
- 4:32the last corner. So yeah, all the places to do
- 4:34that, you know, I definitely felt the most comfortable there
- 4:37out of anywhere we could go, just because I've truthfully
- 4:39been in that position more than anywhere else in my career.
- 4:41So yeah, just it was weird not doing it against Kyle Busch
- 4:45because that's what it's been my other two.
- 4:46But yeah, Tyler was really good as well.
- 4:50So chase, people in the media always like to say when someone
- 4:53gets a win or if you're locked in or something, you're resting
- 4:56easy, you're calm. But I don't think going into any
- 4:59given Sunday in the Cup Series you can really be calm because
- 5:03there's always something to gain, isn't there?
- 5:05You're on to the next round, you know that.
- 5:07There's got to be a little bit of relief in that.
- 5:09But still, you guys got to go out and fight because you're not
- 5:12here to to run 35th, you're here to win.
- 5:14Yeah, for sure. I mean, we're definitely coming
- 5:16here to win. And I think, you know,
- 5:17especially in the playoffs, you just can't take a week off in
- 5:19general. You got to keep your foot down
- 5:20and, you know, really keep the pressure on everybody else.
- 5:23And once you get that confidence, you get that
- 5:24momentum, you want to keep it rolling.
- 5:26So yeah, I I was telling our guys yesterday, I hope we lead
- 5:28every life today. It'll be a little bit harder.
- 5:30We don't start on the front row. But yeah, I hope we can
- 5:32obviously go and and put put another solid day together.
- 5:35That's the the thing about the playoffs and just racing in
- 5:38general. You know, that momentum comes
- 5:40and goes throughout the season and obviously right now we have
- 5:42it. We just want to keep carrying
- 5:43that on now. In case every race is special,
- 5:46every race has its own thing, but there's so much that goes
- 5:48into this weekend, this track, the way it came about, the way
- 5:52they revived it, the fans that are out here.
- 5:55In this area of the. Country.
- 5:57And the competition on the racetrack, what's special about
- 6:00this weekend, this event and this track for you?
- 6:02Yeah, I've always loved coming here.
- 6:03I I tell people all the time like the Saint Louis area is
- 6:06such an underrated Motorsports region.
- 6:08Like they're just. Yeah, there's just so many.
- 6:13I mean, there's how many race tracks you have Tri-City, you
- 6:15have Jacksonville, you have Lincoln, you have Wayne County,
- 6:18you have Wayne City. You guys don't run like you just
- 6:20have, you have people. There's, I mean, there's 1010
- 6:23tracks literally within an hour and a half, two hour areas.
- 6:26So yeah, I just, you know, I grew up a lot, you know, racing
- 6:28at Macon and Jacksonville and all these little dirt tracks are
- 6:31out here and it's always cool to come back.
- 6:33And, and truthfully, this is kind of like my second home
- 6:35race. You know, my hometown's only
- 6:37three, 3 1/2 hours from here in Indiana.
- 6:39So yeah, outside of Indianapolis, this is really the
- 6:42closest I get to racing home. So yeah, I've always loved
- 6:44coming here and yeah, all the time.
- 6:46This this area is definitely. Johnny, This is why Johnny and
- 6:51myself are partners, because you set me up beautifully, OK?
- 6:55At Highland last night they had the World of Outlaw midgets
- 7:00basically over at Heavily. They had mods going wild over
- 7:05here at Granite. They had to use SAX Sprint cars.
- 7:08I mean, this is like, I wouldn't say dirt racing Capital, but
- 7:11we're knocking on the door. Yeah, it's definitely, it's
- 7:13definitely. There's a lot.
- 7:14There's more tracks. I feel like in this region, I
- 7:16mean Indiana, we have a lot, but I mean really in this 2 hour
- 7:20window, Saint Louis, there I got a ton of tracks.
- 7:24So I told him back today, I said I'm going to rough you up a
- 7:27little bit. You got to go with me.
- 7:29World News lately and I'm a football rigging.
- 7:32One of your dear friends, you know, got hurt in a Sprint car
- 7:37and you said something that caught my eye.
- 7:39You said I'm not going to run a Sprint car anymore.
- 7:42A lot of dirt fans out here. Can you talk to why you don't
- 7:45want to drive a Sprint car anymore?
- 7:47Well, I mean, I'm still going to be heavily involved.
- 7:49You know, I have my team still. It's not been on the racetrack
- 7:52this year, but it's something that's a huge passion.
- 7:54I mean, my grandpa's own Sprint car since the 70s.
- 7:56It's it was my first love, right?
- 7:58He's going Sprint car racing. And yeah, for me, you know,
- 8:00this, I ran probably 20 something Sprint car races last
- 8:03year and I found myself truthfully kind of nervous and
- 8:06scared. I didn't want to get hurt.
- 8:08It just wasn't giving it 100% when I would go.
- 8:11I was already kind of going there just to have fun and kind
- 8:13of use it as like a golf game and a stress relief from the the
- 8:16cub side. And yeah, I just, I, my heart
- 8:19wasn't in the driving part of it.
- 8:20I, every time we would go and I have a young, young kid from,
- 8:24from actually Mason City, IL, Carter Stark that drives my
- 8:27stuff. And I had way more fun and
- 8:29enjoyment go in there and just being car than I was being
- 8:31drivers. So, yeah, I had a had a buddy a
- 8:34couple years ago, DJ Vanderlei. He was literally the lead
- 8:37engineer in my Xfinity car. And yeah, sit beside, beside him
- 8:41on the plane going to Texas. He's going to run a micro that
- 8:43weekend. And he got paralyzed literally
- 8:45from the neck down. He told me the day before that,
- 8:47you know, him and his wife were pregnant and it just really hit
- 8:50home. Like man, like I have 3 kids
- 8:51now. So yeah, after last year my wife
- 8:54had twins and I was already going, you know, away and racing
- 8:58more. And I don't know, I just felt
- 8:59like it was more important to, to be there for my kids and my
- 9:02wife obviously, and not, you know, going out and racing for
- 9:04cars. So yeah, I just decided to step
- 9:06away still. Want to go?
- 9:08Be a part of for car racing, but just not drive anymore.
- 9:10So yeah, hopefully can get my team back out there.
- 9:12So, Chase, we've had the debate all weekend long and I guess
- 9:14it's been a couple weeks now. People keep talking about the
- 9:17GOAT, the greatest of all times. Indiana's given us you and Tony
- 9:20Stewart. Tony Stewart, one of the.
- 9:22Best drivers? Ever You look at guys like,
- 9:25well, the good Lord himself, Rusty Wallace going to be here
- 9:28today, one of the goats, one of the greatest of all time.
- 9:31When you look at that in racing from growing up and you look at
- 9:34the guys that were on the top of the heat, who did you look to as
- 9:37being somewhat the GOAT? I mean, for me, it was Tony
- 9:40Stewart just because I grew up in Southern Indiana.
- 9:42You know, Tony grew up. Yeah.
- 9:44Tony grew up 45 minutes from where I grew up.
- 9:46You know, he grew up racing Sprint cars.
- 9:48And yeah, So for me, Tony was always that guy.
- 9:51You know, Steve Kinzer grew up 25 minutes from where I was
- 9:53from. So Steve Kinzer, I mean, is
- 9:55probably the GOAT Sprint car racing.
- 9:57Jack Hewitt was somebody that I always looked up to.
- 9:59Dave, darling, he's like you said.
- 10:01Come on. You say Jack Hewitt?
- 10:04I would make my producer so mad. Yeah, don't, Don't do it.
- 10:08Right now, not afraid to die. Can he do it?
- 10:13Jack Hewitt. Yeah, Hewitt.
- 10:18Was one of my heroes. Yeah.
- 10:19He drove to my grandpa for two years.
- 10:21Just hearing the stories of them growing up and down the road.
- 10:24Yeah, I Hewitt's probably one of my favorite individuals in life.
- 10:27So yeah, do it. Oh yeah.
- 10:31So yeah, there's a lot of guys out there that are up there,
- 10:33but. We see different.
- 10:34Eras of racing, I think and different guys.
- 10:36It's just kind of hard to to say who the GOAT is because Richard
- 10:40Petty raced in a different era. But one thing, Chase, I don't
- 10:43think you can really debate much is guys, we look week in and
- 10:46week out. The margin of victory has
- 10:50changed so much over the last couple of years and we're
- 10:52probably going to see 1 today. That small margin of victory we
- 10:56see now, it used to be 5-10 guys maybe could win one of these
- 11:00races. Guys, we're talking about 25
- 11:02winners week in and week out. This competition level Chase is
- 11:05huge. It's definitely tight.
- 11:07That's for Rd. course racing and SVG wins by 30 seconds.
- 11:10But yeah, on the Opals it's yeah, it's been crazy tight.
- 11:15This is the field. Honestly, yesterday was probably
- 11:18the the biggest gap I've seen in qualifying in a long time.
- 11:21And it was only, I think a second from literally first to
- 11:24dead last where a lot of the time we go places, you know,
- 11:27Martinsville, it'll be from 1st to 30th, it'll be 3/10 of a
- 11:30second. Like, it's just crazy how tight
- 11:32the field is and that's why it is harder to pass today, just
- 11:35because we're all so fast and we're all so close.
- 11:37So yeah, it'll be, it'll be interesting race today just
- 11:40because the track's going to lie now.
- 11:41It's going to do a lot of things different.
- 11:42But yeah, I'm sure the margin of victory will certainly be close.
- 11:46OK, how many race car drivers do we have out here?
- 11:48Raise your hand. All of.
- 11:50Us want. OK, No.
- 11:52You all drive a race car from your couch, right?
- 11:55I can't believe he knows it. Hey.
- 11:59Hey. I've never seen you throughout
- 12:02that many towels. He was.
- 12:03You were out of breath. You were awesome.
- 12:07OK. Oh yeah, we got more.
- 12:09OK, we're going take us around this racetrack now.
- 12:13I know when we're down, you know, towards turn one.
- 12:16We hear all the shift, you know, going on.
- 12:18Give us all a preview. You know, we got sequential
- 12:21shifting, right? OK, take us down in turn.
- 12:24I want y'all to hear him real good.
- 12:26Who's who's got scanners today? OK.
- 12:29All right, you listen. Lift them up a little bit,
- 12:32right, Let's go down to the front straightaway.
- 12:34Yeah, so this racetrack is is honestly really just odd, right?
- 12:38Like when you look at it from Google Earth, it kind of looks
- 12:41really similar to Darlington just from the shape of it, but
- 12:43it's totally opposite. You know, turn one, you're going
- 12:46down there and it feels like you were absolutely flying.
- 12:49I mean, you're probably running 180 something mile an hour and
- 12:52yeah, you go from here, you slam on the brakes as hard as you
- 12:55can. It's as similar to Rd. core
- 12:57style braking that we get anywhere on an Oval.
- 12:59I mean, you're on the brakes as hard as you couldn't possibly
- 13:02push it, downshift from 5th to 4th, then from 4th to 3rd.
- 13:05And then you just kind of go in there and decide where you want
- 13:07to run. You're seeing in the race day, I
- 13:09think we'll be almost all the way up to the fence in one and
- 13:11two. Or you can be all the way down
- 13:12on the curbing, come off the corner.
- 13:14It'll be sliding and doing all kinds of weird stuff because
- 13:16you're you have so many RPMS, 3rd, 4th, 4th to 5th down the
- 13:20straight away you're just bouncing all over the place.
- 13:22I don't know how many of you guys watch practice, but you're
- 13:24just literally just doing this the whole straight.
- 13:26Away the old pit gate you know the pit gate comes across and
- 13:29you're. You're bouncing the whole way
- 13:32down through there. Then you go into 3 and it's this
- 13:35really long, really flat kind of sweeping corner.
- 13:38And you have some options there too where you can kind of run on
- 13:40the bottom of the top. But I feel like that's where you
- 13:42see most of your passes, at least start is in three and four
- 13:45because the balance of your race car, that's where it really is a
- 13:48huge difference maker. So you see guys kind of run up
- 13:51the racetrack, get a big run, and then yeah, you're down to
- 13:534th gear in three and four late in the run.
- 13:56You might go to 3rd gear there as well.
- 13:57But here at this racetrack, you're extremely busy just
- 14:00because you're shifting so much, you know, your back kind of
- 14:02hurts. I feel like after this or just
- 14:04because the the amount of brake pressure you use in this place.
- 14:06So yeah, it's it's it's not an easy racetrack.
- 14:09It's like I said, it's kind of an odd one because it is so
- 14:12different from everywhere else we run.
- 14:13So the car doesn't really drive that great.
- 14:15So kind of makes fun. So we're going to do something
- 14:18we never do because Wendy mentoring usually helps us.
- 14:22One or two people out in the crowd have a question.
- 14:26Back-to-back Southern 500 winner Chase Frisco, who has a question
- 14:32right I. Want to ask you buddy.
- 14:38How much pressure on the first southern 500?
- 14:40I would say the pressure was way higher the first southern 500
- 14:44than the second one, just because you know, it is a crown
- 14:48jewel. You want to win a crown jewel,
- 14:49but really just the whole everything that went into that
- 14:52one, you know, the the Stewart house was closing down.
- 14:55You know, we had literally 10 races left till the company
- 14:58didn't even exist anymore. Yeah, you just, you felt like,
- 15:03you know, obviously I went to the shop leading up to and that
- 15:06was our last race to make the playoffs.
- 15:08If we don't make the playoffs, people are literally going to
- 15:10start leaving Monday because they know there's no shot to
- 15:13race for a championship. So we'd already lost, I want to
- 15:16say in the span of four weeks before that, like 40 people.
- 15:18And if we didn't win that race, I felt like we were going to
- 15:20lose another 40. And just the pressure of, you
- 15:23know, all 300 employees, that one definitely was way more I
- 15:25would say the pressure packed. Well Chase, we got to let you
- 15:28go. One of the true good guys in
- 15:30racing folks is Chase Briscoe. And before we go a real quick
- 15:34question as a car owner, if you own two quarter midgets, do you
- 15:37have a half a Midget? Yeah, I mean, math would tell
- 15:40you we did. OK, I just want to clear that
- 15:42up. Yeah, I love it though.
- 15:44Thank you. Thank you.
- 15:45Thank. You you could well be talking
- 15:49about your. Winner right there.
- 15:51This guys on a roll, right? Now, and as cautions breed.
- 15:54Cautions Houses. Winning breeds winning.
- 15:57That's true. You win 1, you win another one.
