- 0:00Did you know that in within five years of starting levodopa, more
- 0:03than half the people living with Parkinson's will deal with
- 0:06wearing off every single day? I didn't believe that for that
- 0:10start at first, but once it started happening to me, I knew
- 0:14exactly what they meant. Wearing off doesn't wait for the
- 0:17right moment. I've had it hit me in the middle
- 0:20of a meeting, standing in a grocery store checkout, even
- 0:23halfway through trying to make dinner.
- 0:25One second I'm fine and the next I feel like my body clock
- 0:29strikes midnight and everything grinds to a halt.
- 0:33It's like being Cinderella at midnight, but instead of losing
- 0:36the glass slipper, I lose my ability to move smoothly.
- 0:40Well today I want to share 5 hacks that I used to survive
- 0:43wearing off and stick around to the very end because I've got a
- 0:46Bryceism that completely changes the way and how I see these
- 0:51moments. Well, well, well, welcome back
- 1:26friends. And if you're new here, I'm
- 1:28Bryce and this is living with Parkinson's, the good, the bad,
- 1:30and the reality. Now this channel, this podcast
- 1:33is all about real talk, real stories, and real hope for
- 1:36people living with Parkinson's and the people who care for
- 1:39them. So hit subscribe if you want
- 1:41tips that you can actually use, encouragement from a real
- 1:44community, and maybe even a laugh along the way.
- 1:47Now this is Part 2 of my Med Hacks for Real Life series.
- 1:52Now. Last time we tackled fatigue and
- 1:53today it's all about when your meds peak and plunge.
- 1:58Now I'll never forget the first time I realized I was wearing
- 2:01off. I was in a meeting mid sentence
- 2:03and suddenly my stiffness ramped up and my words stuck in my
- 2:06throat. To everyone else, it looked like
- 2:09I was just pausing to think, but inside, I felt like my body had
- 2:13betrayed me. And then there was a time at the
- 2:16grocery store check out. I had all my groceries on the
- 2:19belt, people lined up behind me, and boom, I'm frozen.
- 2:23The cashier gave me this polite smile, you know the one.
- 2:26And while I tried to fumble with my wallet, Carmen had to step in
- 2:30and finish. Pain.
- 2:31I wanted to disappear right there in Aisle 4.
- 2:35Now, over the years, I've had plenty of these moments, some
- 2:38frustrating, some embarrassing, and yeah, even a few that I can
- 2:42laugh about now. But the key is I've always
- 2:45learned ways to manage them, right?
- 2:48I've no. So I haven't always learned
- 2:49ways. I've learned ways to manage them
- 2:51after 15 years of this. So let's talk about 5 hacks that
- 2:54helped me the most. And I know they'll help you.
- 2:57So here's hack number one. Track your timing.
- 3:00The first step in surviving the wearing off is spotting the
- 3:03pattern. Now, for me, it started with a
- 3:06simple notebook, right? Not too complicated.
- 3:08Every time I took meds, I wrote it down OK when they kicked in,
- 3:13I wrote it down right. And how I felt when they kicked
- 3:17in and the difference from when I before I took my meds And then
- 3:21when I started to notice stiffness or slowness or my
- 3:24predominant, you know, symptoms coming back, I marked the down
- 3:28the time. Within a week, I could see the
- 3:32pattern. Like clockwork, 3 hours after
- 3:35dosing, things started to slip. OK, now I've graduated up, I use
- 3:41a pill timer cap bottle or pill time timer cap on my pill bottle
- 3:45and you know, I that way I always know my last dose.
- 3:49It was, you know, some people use apps.
- 3:51I've working on a journal that I'm going to give and probably
- 3:55get out to you as well soon. The point is, once you know your
- 3:59rhythm, you can work with it instead of being ambushed by it.
- 4:04That's so important. OK, moving along hack #2 is you
- 4:09need to plan around your on times.
- 4:12Now I learned really quick that I can't schedule life randomly
- 4:16anymore. If I want to go grocery
- 4:18shopping, if I want to meet a friend, or if I even want to
- 4:20record a podcast like this, I plan for it on my on times.
- 4:25OK, so when you see me, I'm on on.
- 4:28It's when people say like you look so good.
- 4:30You sound great. How do you get your voice?
- 4:32This is my peak on when you see me, I'm peak on.
- 4:36OK, and it's not just me, Carmen knows the drill.
- 4:39She'll ask do you want to go out for a walk?
- 4:40And I'll say, you know what, check back with me in 45 minutes
- 4:44and she already knows that's going to be my when I'm on and
- 4:46when I'm feeling the best. But here's the thing, it's not
- 4:50about being rigid, it's about being realistic.
- 4:53You know, once I stopped fighting against my biology and
- 4:56I started planning with it, life got a little smoother.
- 5:00And it will for you too, I promise.
- 5:02Act #3 small snacks and stretches.
- 5:06I call this one small snacks and stretches.
- 5:07So when I feel myself slipping, sometimes a little bridge helps.
- 5:11For me, it's an apple or banana, a handful of almonds or peanuts,
- 5:15and of course my M&M peanuts. And I pair that with a few
- 5:19shoulder rolls or marching in place and I can sometimes
- 5:22stretch out the window until my next dose kicks in.
- 5:25Now this is so important. If you forgot your meds at home
- 5:28or you ran out and you didn't take enough or and you or you
- 5:31thought you'd be home in time for your next dose.
- 5:33So one time as an example, one time I, I was out running
- 5:37errands. I started feeling it creeping
- 5:38in, didn't have my pills with me.
- 5:40And luckily I had some guess what peanut, almonds, peanut
- 5:44almond or sorry, almond M and Ms. in the car.
- 5:47Don't really like them that much, but they were in the car.
- 5:49Don't know why. It must have been after
- 5:50Halloween and that tiny snack and a couple of minutes of
- 5:54walking around the parking lot brought bought me just enough
- 5:57time to get home and take my dose.
- 5:59Now this is not a cure at all, but it takes the edge off.
- 6:04So if this is, if this is sounding familiar, hit the like
- 6:06button so more people can see the real side of Parkinson's and
- 6:09what we really need to hear. And tell me in the comments,
- 6:12when do you notice your meds wearing off the most?
- 6:15Morning, afternoon or evenings? Really cool to see how different
- 6:19we are and then again, maybe how similar some of us are.
- 6:22I'd love to see that. So morning, afternoon or
- 6:24evenings, when do you notice your meds wearing off the most?
- 6:27And if you don't know what I mean by meds wearing off, it's
- 6:29like when do you start feeling crappy?
- 6:32When do, when do those symptoms start coming back?
- 6:34When do you start getting, why do you start with a headache?
- 6:37Like my head starts to hurt a little bit.
- 6:39I get a little bit brain foggy, then I feel the stiffness
- 6:42kicking in. Those are all my predominant.
- 6:43That's my predominant symptoms. So for you, it may be different,
- 6:47but you'll start to notice it starts slowly coming back in.
- 6:51OK, that's how you do that. So moving on hack #4, you need
- 6:56to talk to your doctor now. One of the biggest mistakes I
- 6:59made early on was accepting that wearing off was my new normal.
- 7:04I get fired up on this part. Don't do that.
- 7:07There are options. Your doctor might adjust your
- 7:09timing, your dose, or even add another Med like ACM.
- 7:13Like ACM, What do they call them?
- 7:14CMTSCOMTS, right? Or an inhibit inhibitor.
- 7:19I can't even speak today. Or just to smooth things out.
- 7:22Now here's a tip, do not walk into your doctor's office empty
- 7:26handed. Bring a list of your symptoms
- 7:28and they'll have times that they happen.
- 7:30Like I said, write them down. I've shown up with notes that
- 7:33Carmen help me keep and my neurologist could actually see
- 7:35the patterns and make changes that made a real difference.
- 7:38So even if I couldn't see the patterns or even if you're just
- 7:41starting out newly diagnosed, you're like patterns.
- 7:43What in the heck are you talking about?
- 7:45Do what I said in step number one that tip 1 and write him
- 7:48down and take him to your doctor and let him see it or her see
- 7:51it. And they can they'll, they'll
- 7:53see the patterns and they can help you with that.
- 7:55I promise you. So that that it's such an
- 7:57amazing difference. Like my God, my God, don't walk
- 8:05in and say I think this happens or this might happen or I'm
- 8:08feeling like this. Bringing the list of symptoms
- 8:10and the time they happen. I've shown up with notes that
- 8:12Carmen helps me keep right then my, and again, like I said, my
- 8:15doctor sees the pattern, he makes the changes.
- 8:18And that 10 minutes of preparation before that
- 8:20appointment, it pays off big time.
- 8:23Listen, don't waste those appointments.
- 8:25You only get them what, once, twice, 3 * a year?
- 8:28Me, it's 2 * a year. So that's a massive hack for
- 8:31you. And you know what, again, people
- 8:33keep saying to me, how do, how do I, you know, how do you not
- 8:36look off? You don't go off you, you look
- 8:38so good. I plan it when you see me doing
- 8:40this. This is my peak on.
- 8:41I'm peak on baby. This is like what I I would
- 8:43never go on camera if I was off. Promise me, I promise you I
- 8:48would not and you wouldn't want to see it either.
- 8:49So there you go. And here is now my hack #5 and
- 8:54this is what I call have a rescue plan.
- 8:57Now. This one's for just for huge.
- 8:58It's just huge for Peace of Mind.
- 9:01I call it my rescue kit. So inside I keep an extra dose
- 9:04of extra dose of pills, a small snack, a water bottle, and
- 9:08sometimes even headphones. And like, calming music, right?
- 9:11It's not about paranoia. It's about preparation.
- 9:14You know, I still remember the day I forgot my kit, my little
- 9:17kit, my rescue kit, and I was out with friends and I started
- 9:20wearing off and I realized I had nothing on me.
- 9:23I felt trapped, you know? And since then, I don't leave my
- 9:26house without my kit. Even just knowing it's there, it
- 9:29makes me feel calm. And that's when I'm.
- 9:32What I mean by that is like in between doses, you take your
- 9:34pills and you just know you're going off.
- 9:36And sometimes it's just easier to get away, you know, have some
- 9:39water, have a snack, put on some music for 5 or 10 minutes.
- 9:42Like your friends. I'll be right back.
- 9:43You know, I'm too long to chill out.
- 9:44I can be right back and you can get through that moment and come
- 9:48back on feeling good. You don't have to worry about
- 9:50being off. Well, in my last video, some of
- 9:53you shared your own experiences with wearing off and one person
- 9:57said that they set alarms so they never miss a dose.
- 9:59Great, great little hack, great little tip.
- 10:02I set alarms on my phone. My, my Alexa, my, you know,
- 10:06everything. Everything's going off all the
- 10:08time. Just so I always have things so
- 10:11I always know when it's going to happen.
- 10:13So that was a great tip. And another said that they keep
- 10:15their activities light in the afternoon because they know
- 10:18their meds fade more often in the afternoon.
- 10:20So they plan their day around it.
- 10:21And these are the kind of tips that make this community so
- 10:24powerful. These are, I just pulled these
- 10:26other comments by the way. So keep them coming and I'll
- 10:29keep featuring them. I promise you I will.
- 10:32So why does wearing off happen? Well, here's the simple version.
- 10:38Dopamine is like gas in your car.
- 10:40And with Parkinson's, the tank empties faster and the fill UPS
- 10:44don't last as long. So that's why we feel those ups
- 10:48and downs. But here's the hopeful part.
- 10:52Researchers are working on longer lasting levodopa
- 10:54formulations, pump therapies, you know, DBS, even gene
- 10:58therapy. There's real progress being made
- 11:01and that gives me hope and I hope it gives you hope too.
- 11:04That's a lot of hopes, right? Gives me hope.
- 11:06You hope. We all have hope.
- 11:07But anyway, so you know what I'm going to give you.
- 11:10This isn't the end, but I'll give you my braces in for today.
- 11:12With Parkinson's wearing off. Reminds me to build a life that
- 11:16works with my rhythm, not against it.
- 11:19Now I came up with that one after cancelling plans, you
- 11:22know, one too many times because I crashed at the wrong moment.
- 11:26Now, instead of forcing myself into a schedule that doesn't
- 11:29fit, I plan around my rhythm and I and I and I do have right.
- 11:34And some days it works beautifully.
- 11:36And guess what? Some days I completely blow it.
- 11:41But either way, I try not to beat myself up.
- 11:43So if you're blowing it right now or you're just like, Oh my
- 11:46God, I, I messed up my timing, it's OK, You blew it.
- 11:50You blew it. Just blow it off and pick
- 11:52yourself up, dust yourself off and let's go.
- 11:55So those are my 5 hacks for navigating wearing off.
- 11:58Which one resonated the most with you?
- 12:00Or better yet, what's your best trick for handling those ups and
- 12:04downs? Drop it in the comments.
- 12:06Remember, I read every single one and respond to every one of
- 12:09them. And that's not the best part,
- 12:11that's a good part, but that's not the best part.
- 12:13Your idea, your hack will help somebody else.
- 12:17I promise you. There are people scouring the
- 12:19comments looking for help, and you can be that help, OK?
- 12:24And don't miss Part 3 of the series because you know what
- 12:26it's called? Brain fog and Parkinson's. 4
- 12:29simple mental boosters that I'm going to give you.
- 12:31And that one's going to hit home for a lot of us.
- 12:34And until then, you keep showing up, you keep being real, and you
- 12:39keep doing life today. Parkinson's may be part of your
- 12:45life, but it doesn't get to define it.
