- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to Home Based presented by Geico.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Get More, Get Baseball, Get More with Guico, I am
- 0:06Speaker 2: your host Smookie Bets and today I am joined by
- 0:10Speaker 2: twenty twenty three All Star and the Diamondbacks shortstop Heraldo Perdomo.
- 0:16Speaker 2: How you doing, Bro, I'm doing group brother, Thanks for
- 0:18Speaker 2: coming on the show.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 0:20Speaker 1: So it's Heraldo but with a G.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yeah, so g ng L and and so like, it's
- 0:29Speaker 2: not Giraldo at all.
- 0:31Speaker 3: No, he's head out little.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I feel like a nickname would be like Gerald though.
- 0:35Speaker 2: That'd be a pretty cool you know what I'm saying.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean they call me Jerry too, Jerry. Yeah,
- 0:41Speaker 3: toy toy is called started with that with that calling
- 0:44Speaker 3: me Jerry.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Just Jerry, Jerry, okay, Jerry with a G.
- 0:48Speaker 3: To Jerry Yeah with a G yeah, but not Jay
- 0:51Speaker 3: g j Yeah.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Okay, I may start calling you Jerry. Shout out to you,
- 0:55Speaker 2: Tory for the nickname. So first I want to start
- 0:57Speaker 2: off the show man.
- 0:58Speaker 1: We play a game called on base and off Base.
- 1:01Speaker 2: It's like whether you're in or you're out on whatever
- 1:04Speaker 2: the topic is. First topic, you need to wear yellow
- 1:09Speaker 2: on game day? Are you on base or off base?
- 1:12Speaker 2: On that again, you're you're in So what I noticed
- 1:16Speaker 2: that you always wear yellow? And yellow has nothing to
- 1:18Speaker 2: do with the diamondback uniforms. So why is that your
- 1:21Speaker 2: favorite color? No, it's not my favorite color.
- 1:23Speaker 3: But I feel like i've been some lighting, you know,
- 1:26Speaker 3: because we only have gray, red and black. So I
- 1:31Speaker 3: feel since twenty three, Yeah, like I gotta bring some
- 1:36Speaker 3: you know, some sweat.
- 1:38Speaker 2: So yellow yellow, there's no lime green yellow like green neon. Okay, okay,
- 1:44Speaker 2: and your your cleats match it. Yeah, so you when
- 1:46Speaker 2: you go to make your cleats, you make them to
- 1:50Speaker 2: have nothing to do with the uniform.
- 1:51Speaker 3: This is strict. That's just strict. Yeah, I don't, I don't.
- 1:54Speaker 3: I don't want about the uniform. I just I just
- 1:57Speaker 3: want to be like, oh, gonna, if you feel I'm
- 2:00Speaker 3: gonna bring light to the team, gonna.
- 2:02Speaker 2: So you're you're yellow brings light to the team. I
- 2:05Speaker 2: guess it's like you're the sun. Yeah, I guess, yeah,
- 2:07Speaker 2: the sun.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Okay, So all right too, you're pretty quiet on the field,
- 2:13Speaker 2: are you.
- 2:14Speaker 1: On base or off?
- 2:14Speaker 3: Based on that, I think again.
- 2:19Speaker 1: You're yeah, okay, you're you think you're quiet?
- 2:21Speaker 3: I am, yeah, I am. Well, where you guys.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, so so you depend the moment. So I
- 2:31Speaker 2: noticed that. That's how we started talking. And I know
- 2:35Speaker 2: you had fun with Kim and other people on base
- 2:40Speaker 2: like when you see your people that you like to
- 2:42Speaker 2: talk to, you enjoy talking to, Like what do you
- 2:44Speaker 2: usually talk about?
- 2:45Speaker 3: You know? First of all most of the time you
- 2:49Speaker 3: said for a bias. Okay, that was that's how weird started,
- 2:52Speaker 3: you know, because I gotta make sure Tory again. He
- 2:57Speaker 3: brought something to me I stored from you when you
- 2:59Speaker 3: was Boston, like something happened there and you know, he say,
- 3:03Speaker 3: you prefer to be in the minor league until whatever.
- 3:07Speaker 3: He told me that story. So that's when I started
- 3:11Speaker 3: approach it to you guys for some advice, you know,
- 3:15Speaker 3: because when I get up, you know, we had a
- 3:17Speaker 3: lot of bed so for me, I couldn't like understand,
- 3:21Speaker 3: you know, being like myself with those guys, you know,
- 3:26Speaker 3: you can come through tough here, right so right now
- 3:31Speaker 3: on baseball, we had a lot of jump players and
- 3:34Speaker 3: they can do whatever we want. Now we can say,
- 3:37Speaker 3: you know, but before it was kind of hard. So
- 3:39Speaker 3: I just tried to approach you guy, like you know,
- 3:43Speaker 3: I remember like somebody said, like oh, but don't be
- 3:46Speaker 3: very very friendly. It's not a friendly I just want
- 3:48Speaker 3: to learn and get like how this level.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Worked, like to ask a lot of questions. You know,
- 3:54Speaker 2: you're talking people. I mean you are friendly, though, you
- 3:56Speaker 2: are very friendly. But look, we're going to talk about
- 3:59Speaker 2: all that and a little bit once we finished this game,
- 4:01Speaker 2: because I do want to. I'll tell you about the
- 4:02Speaker 2: story that toy is talking about. So number three.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Frog Man is the best nickname in baseball.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Now you're out.
- 4:13Speaker 1: So now so that's your nickname?
- 4:16Speaker 3: Right? No? Then you then you start calling me like this, Okay,
- 4:20Speaker 3: so it is your nickname? Then, man it is. I
- 4:23Speaker 3: have so many nicknames you.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Have, okay, Jerry frog Man? Where did frog Man come from?
- 4:28Speaker 3: Man? We was playing again the the New York met
- 4:33Speaker 3: It was like MLB network hoes again and Joe Morrison
- 4:39Speaker 3: started calling up talking to me in Spanish. I said, man,
- 4:43Speaker 3: well you talked to me in Spanish and American. So
- 4:46Speaker 3: I was the player again and I remember because at
- 4:50Speaker 3: home the little frog are cold outside. So for me,
- 4:54Speaker 3: I saw that the block is still cold.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Okay.
- 4:58Speaker 3: He asked me, like why you should be saw success decision?
- 5:01Speaker 3: I said, become my My boy is like a frog cold.
- 5:06Speaker 2: That's how they you got ice in your veins like this,
- 5:09Speaker 2: it is, that's that's I don't want I don't want.
- 5:12Speaker 3: To say like ice in my band, you know, you
- 5:13Speaker 3: want to say like something like fun. Okay. So now
- 5:16Speaker 3: they started calling me the frog.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Okay.
- 5:18Speaker 2: So and then when they call you the frog, do
- 5:20Speaker 2: you answer or no?
- 5:22Speaker 3: Sometimes I just I just laughed. I just laughed. I
- 5:25Speaker 3: think it's funny.
- 5:27Speaker 1: That's hilarious.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Okay.
- 5:28Speaker 2: The next one is, uh, Corbyn Carroll can run you
- 5:31Speaker 2: down on the basis. Corbyn Carroll can he can run
- 5:35Speaker 2: you down on the basis. So if you guys started,
- 5:37Speaker 2: if he's if he started like halfway to first base
- 5:43Speaker 2: and you started on first base, do you think he
- 5:45Speaker 2: could catch you. Look there's this right here where he
- 5:48Speaker 2: was running you down.
- 5:51Speaker 1: That's a that's a that's a that's a bad I
- 5:54Speaker 1: look at that.
- 5:55Speaker 2: I'm now you're out now, So you're you're you're you're
- 5:59Speaker 2: just as fast I was.
- 6:00Speaker 3: I was jogging right there. I knew, I knew, I
- 6:02Speaker 3: knew its core easy, you.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Know, Okay, Okay, okay, And he's fast.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Yeah he can probably can't get me. Yeah more he
- 6:12Speaker 3: can get me especially that Yeah that yeah, he was
- 6:14Speaker 3: like running like you know, flying flying, Yeah, he was flying.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Okay, So the last one, there's an art to turning
- 6:22Speaker 2: a double play, Like, there's a lot of technique to
- 6:24Speaker 2: turning a double play.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Are you on base or off off? Based on that?
- 6:27Speaker 3: I mean?
- 6:28Speaker 1: And so tell me, tell me about that.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Because the Diamondbacks, you guys lead, lead the league in
- 6:33Speaker 2: turning double plays. And I know I've been out there
- 6:36Speaker 2: a thousand times to Arizona. I see you guys do
- 6:38Speaker 2: your early work and you're always constantly working on turning
- 6:41Speaker 2: double plays. So what is it about turning double plays
- 6:44Speaker 2: that you guys have figured out or that you do personally?
- 6:48Speaker 3: For me, I feel it's a gift. But to the
- 6:51Speaker 3: end of the day, you gotta you have to know
- 6:54Speaker 3: who is your partner. You know, you have to know
- 6:57Speaker 3: what you what his best past to catch the ball.
- 7:01Speaker 3: You know, I got Marte. You know Marte the last
- 7:05Speaker 3: four years, so I know exactly what I had to
- 7:07Speaker 3: throw the ball to him because he got a really
- 7:09Speaker 3: good hand. And you know, we don't communicate every time
- 7:12Speaker 3: like you know, anticipate, And I feel it's a gift.
- 7:15Speaker 3: To the end of the day's a give, you know.
- 7:17Speaker 2: And so do you think that your personal relationship has anything.
- 7:21Speaker 3: To do with Yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean, like I said,
- 7:26Speaker 3: I know him for the last four years, so we've
- 7:28Speaker 3: ben't practiced some different Like you know, man play sut
- 7:31Speaker 3: st it's hard, especially like you know, you gotta anticipate everything.
- 7:36Speaker 3: I mean, you gotta. You got the experience now, you know,
- 7:38Speaker 3: it's way even than the outfield. But when you know
- 7:41Speaker 3: you partner, when you know where you have to throw
- 7:43Speaker 3: the ball, well you know who's running, I think it's
- 7:46Speaker 3: made way easy.
- 7:47Speaker 2: And and so during spring training, like how did you
- 7:51Speaker 2: learn where he likes the ball?
- 7:54Speaker 3: Doing spring training? Yeah, doing spring training. Yeah, we men
- 7:58Speaker 3: way sometime we through like forty oh Eddy Grandball together
- 8:03Speaker 3: young and spring training sometimes more than that. You know,
- 8:07Speaker 3: that's how you started learning, like the chemistry. Yeah, yeah,
- 8:10Speaker 3: the chemistry.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Yeah, that's how he liked it with us.
- 8:13Speaker 2: You know, we've had some injuries and whatnot, so there's
- 8:15Speaker 2: been a couple of different people playing second base, and
- 8:19Speaker 2: you know, playing with multiple second base it gets kind
- 8:21Speaker 2: of hard sometimes because Tommy is a little shorter, so
- 8:25Speaker 2: I had to throw a little lower where Mickey Rojas
- 8:28Speaker 2: is a little bit taller, but you can kind of
- 8:29Speaker 2: throw it anywhere for him. And then Alex Freeland right now,
- 8:32Speaker 2: who is a young guy. He's just now learning, like
- 8:36Speaker 2: really learning to play second base. And so yeah, it's
- 8:39Speaker 2: really it's kind of tough.
- 8:40Speaker 3: It's kind of its kind of tough because you got alternates. Yeah,
- 8:43Speaker 3: majority of the time.
- 8:44Speaker 1: So what do you do?
- 8:45Speaker 2: What would your what would your advice be for me?
- 8:47Speaker 2: Knowing that I'm playing with multiple second base.
- 8:49Speaker 3: I mean, the first question, you gotta gotta tell him,
- 8:52Speaker 3: like what are the best spot for that? Okay to
- 8:54Speaker 3: catch the ball? You know, whatever make it feel more
- 8:57Speaker 3: comfortable on the base, that's where you gotta throw. I
- 9:01Speaker 3: told Martell, like, what are you gonna get the ball?
- 9:03Speaker 3: He always told me like, oh, I gotta be on
- 9:05Speaker 3: front or give me a little be on the back.
- 9:07Speaker 3: It's the pendagram ball, you know. But for you, like
- 9:12Speaker 3: I said, like, you gotta you gotta know where they
- 9:14Speaker 3: spot to make a good throw and and be accurate.
- 9:18Speaker 3: You know, you gotta be you. You are amazing athlete.
- 9:21Speaker 3: And I and I told you like last year, like
- 9:23Speaker 3: you definitely can play short styp but sometimes it's a
- 9:27Speaker 3: lot of work and mentally people don't know, you know,
- 9:29Speaker 3: it's more mentally like I feel like in the outfield.
- 9:32Speaker 3: I never play outfield, but I feel I can be
- 9:34Speaker 3: good because you got more free you know, you free
- 9:38Speaker 3: or whether you probably can deal with a fan, but
- 9:41Speaker 3: a short start, you catt anticipate every play, every you
- 9:44Speaker 3: gotta be in ball on every play like equation.
- 9:47Speaker 1: The captain, you know, and and it's.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Like the quarterback, you know, the whole. Yeah. So that's
- 9:54Speaker 3: that's the point. And people like you you start playing
- 9:59Speaker 3: short star, right it was before you sign.
- 10:01Speaker 1: It was I was at when you signed, so even
- 10:06Speaker 1: but then I didn't I.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Didn't really get to learn, you know in high school,
- 10:09Speaker 2: you know, they don't learn learn a whole lot, and
- 10:11Speaker 2: you know, learn a little bit. But you know, then
- 10:13Speaker 2: I immediately moved to second base and so I was, yeah, that's.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Right, you know, And so it was gonna hard. Yeah,
- 10:19Speaker 3: but like I said, like you're an athlete. The only
- 10:22Speaker 3: the only difference is just the mental spot, you know,
- 10:26Speaker 3: like how to be and boling every play. I've been
- 10:30Speaker 3: playing short on my whole life, and sometimes, like you know,
- 10:32Speaker 3: I missed it up majority of the time. I mean
- 10:35Speaker 3: sometimes yeah, but you know, I was like tried to
- 10:38Speaker 3: anticipate every play, like yes, yesterday, I get confused, you know,
- 10:42Speaker 3: because we play a lot on the whole to you guys,
- 10:46Speaker 3: and you know, I realized you guys have like Mark,
- 10:49Speaker 3: Yeah you saw March straight up fire step, I mean
- 10:53Speaker 3: stay fight six. And I went to my infield coach
- 10:58Speaker 3: and I said they only had two Mark and they
- 11:01Speaker 3: don't have like cha fight six, Like what are you
- 11:04Speaker 3: supposed to do? Because I feel like this, this feels
- 11:07Speaker 3: a little bit like tiny and do you feel more
- 11:09Speaker 3: way playing the whole? So man, I was like baby, like,
- 11:14Speaker 3: you know, frustrated. Even I played like a couple of
- 11:16Speaker 3: times here, I mean a lot of time, but I
- 11:18Speaker 3: was kind of like frustrated, Like how because I was
- 11:21Speaker 3: closed by the third baseman. Yeah you feel like that, yeah,
- 11:25Speaker 3: And so like you see, I remember the lines right
- 11:28Speaker 3: just to thin I can catch the ball like on
- 11:31Speaker 3: my feet, but how the third bay was playing it
- 11:34Speaker 3: made me like confused.
- 11:36Speaker 2: You know, it's good to know that even playing your
- 11:39Speaker 2: whole life and you still get confused sometimes.
- 11:42Speaker 1: This year especial this year there's been some situations that
- 11:46Speaker 1: I've had no idea what to do.
- 11:49Speaker 2: I'm just out there infield in man it first and third.
- 11:53Speaker 2: If you get a ground ball to your right, you
- 11:55Speaker 2: got to go home. But if it's right at you,
- 11:57Speaker 2: you have to look at the look at the guy
- 11:59Speaker 2: at third makes he's not going, didn't try and turn.
- 12:02Speaker 3: It's a lot of process. It's a lie a lot.
- 12:05Speaker 2: It's so I mean, but I mean it is, it
- 12:07Speaker 2: is what it is, so so far, and the season's
- 12:09Speaker 2: not done. You have a month left and you've already
- 12:11Speaker 2: set the record for the most rbs by a shortstop.
- 12:15Speaker 3: That's true.
- 12:16Speaker 1: And I met in diamondback syst. Yeah, way did you
- 12:18Speaker 1: know that?
- 12:19Speaker 3: I think? So?
- 12:21Speaker 1: Okay, So tell me about that, Like is that special?
- 12:25Speaker 3: I mean, I feel like every player you know play
- 12:31Speaker 3: this game, you know, so support our family to guess
- 12:35Speaker 3: on the war and all this stuff. But I never
- 12:37Speaker 3: I never realized. I never taught. And when I was
- 12:41Speaker 3: close to doing that, I you know, Tony put me leadoff,
- 12:47Speaker 3: hit lead off. I said, man, because I remember on
- 12:50Speaker 3: twenty three I was like for w I yeah, like
- 12:55Speaker 3: petty and nine with two months before the star break
- 12:58Speaker 3: and he put me lead off and I just only
- 13:01Speaker 3: like ga only one in yeah and two months. But
- 13:06Speaker 3: for me, it you know, made me feel proud on
- 13:10Speaker 3: myself or my hitting coaches or my family, you know,
- 13:14Speaker 3: all the process we've been through in the last three years.
- 13:17Speaker 3: So that's why I've been I've been proud more by
- 13:20Speaker 3: myself just for my hitting coaches.
- 13:23Speaker 2: That shows, you know kind of it's it's it's cool
- 13:27Speaker 2: to see because your whole time being up, I think
- 13:31Speaker 2: I've pretty much have been here.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Yeah, and seeing where you started to where you are.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Now since since twenty two.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean to where you are now, it's like
- 13:40Speaker 2: a huge difference. You're a completely different player.
- 13:42Speaker 3: You have.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Just like you look comfortable playing instead of like you're
- 13:47Speaker 2: trying to figure out how to play. It's like, no,
- 13:49Speaker 2: I know what I'm doing now, or I have an
- 13:51Speaker 2: idea of what I'm doing, and so especially hitting in
- 13:55Speaker 2: the box. Obviously defense is one another thing, but in
- 13:57Speaker 2: the box, it just you just look a lot more comfortable.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Your bats are always, you know, always good, and you
- 14:04Speaker 2: just have a really a really good idea of what
- 14:06Speaker 2: what you need to do and it's showing obviously. And
- 14:09Speaker 2: then earlier this year you were hurt, right or I
- 14:13Speaker 2: don't know if you're still hurt with your your bone
- 14:15Speaker 2: bruise in your hand.
- 14:17Speaker 1: How is that.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Feeling, bro, It's feel horrible.
- 14:20Speaker 1: It feels horrible.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Okay, I still have abandon the bone bruise. I've been
- 14:24Speaker 3: like the last three months.
- 14:25Speaker 2: But so so is there do you have to go
- 14:27Speaker 2: in the training room? What do you have to do
- 14:29Speaker 2: already every day for with that?
- 14:32Speaker 3: Honestly, I don't want it in my hand. I just
- 14:34Speaker 3: let it go to you know which hand is my
- 14:36Speaker 3: left hand?
- 14:37Speaker 1: So does that when you catch ground balls? Does it hurt?
- 14:40Speaker 3: He's hitting me like twice this year?
- 14:41Speaker 1: Really okay?
- 14:42Speaker 3: But he hit me more when he left hander, I
- 14:45Speaker 3: mean right hander handed pitcher, Like yeah, when when you
- 14:51Speaker 3: face now, just today it was like I'm.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Paying like a lot when you hit right handed?
- 14:56Speaker 3: Yeah, right handed? When I hit right handed? Allah, Bro,
- 14:59Speaker 3: I I never had like something like this before. You know,
- 15:03Speaker 3: I got her on twenty twenty four last year by
- 15:08Speaker 3: aniskol surgery. But and I played after I get out
- 15:13Speaker 3: of the surgery, like two morrows. When I come back
- 15:15Speaker 3: to the field, I still kind of I never had
- 15:18Speaker 3: any experiment like this in my hand. How I was
- 15:20Speaker 3: feeling with my knee, that's how I feel my hand.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Oh really?
- 15:24Speaker 3: And start I think like three months ago, for like
- 15:28Speaker 3: it's come from nowhere. It just I was just hidding
- 15:30Speaker 3: and started like getting like sore or sore. And I
- 15:33Speaker 3: remember I was playing. I don't remember the team, but
- 15:36Speaker 3: I make diving diamond stop to the middle of the
- 15:39Speaker 3: field and my hand gets stuck. So my hand was
- 15:42Speaker 3: like and that angle. So after the game, it was
- 15:46Speaker 3: like I was really in pain. So I played for
- 15:48Speaker 3: like two weeks a stray and was like really in pain.
- 15:51Speaker 3: And I said, I thought it was mohammed my hammabon
- 15:55Speaker 3: because I got hammebone surgery in my right hand, so
- 16:00Speaker 3: I had yeah, I had the same, the same feel,
- 16:03Speaker 3: and I just talked with my train. I said, man,
- 16:05Speaker 3: I think it's my hamma bun and they check. I said,
- 16:08Speaker 3: I don't think it's your hammy because if it was
- 16:10Speaker 3: something broken, it won't be able to swing it. I said, man,
- 16:14Speaker 3: trust me, I feel betting comfortable. So I get the
- 16:17Speaker 3: X ray see the skin and murai and they show
- 16:21Speaker 3: it was a bomb bruise. So they asked me like
- 16:23Speaker 3: I asked him, like what the deal? So what I
- 16:25Speaker 3: supposed to do? So, well, you can go to the
- 16:27Speaker 3: ale or you can play through that pain, because it goes.
- 16:31Speaker 3: It's gonna go anywhere. It's gonna be more high or less,
- 16:35Speaker 3: because it's gotta go. It's go out with rest right
- 16:39Speaker 3: and with the spy. We was at that moment, you know,
- 16:43Speaker 3: like everybody was closing the race, and you know, Gino
- 16:48Speaker 3: was here, Naylo was here, all those guys was here.
- 16:51Speaker 3: So I said, I gotta learn how to play with Sorner.
- 16:54Speaker 3: So especially I told Tory, like, I want to play
- 16:56Speaker 3: one hundred sixty two games this year. You know, I
- 16:59Speaker 3: don't want to hit take me out of the field.
- 17:01Speaker 3: And they tried to give me some day off and
- 17:03Speaker 3: I just said, no, I want to I'm gonna play.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Learn how to play through that, bro. And sometimes like
- 17:08Speaker 3: I came to the field with like some pain, like
- 17:11Speaker 3: so painful. I tried to get injection. They're like and
- 17:17Speaker 3: my hand and the doctor tried to find the spy
- 17:19Speaker 3: and he couldn't find it really, and they tried me
- 17:22Speaker 3: to do it, and I said, okay, what they're gonna help.
- 17:26Speaker 3: I said, they're gonna help anything because it's my bone.
- 17:29Speaker 3: You know, it's a bone, Bruce. I can't do anything
- 17:31Speaker 3: about it. I said, Okay, I gotta learn to play
- 17:33Speaker 3: through this and that's how I've been playing the last
- 17:36Speaker 3: two months. But even really well, like I said, that's
- 17:40Speaker 3: gam man honestly, because you know, have you been feeling
- 17:44Speaker 3: bone Bruce before? Yeah? Absolutely, and oh that's the point
- 17:49Speaker 3: like on my hand and he did again left it
- 17:51Speaker 3: like I feel like you know, we don't. I don't
- 17:54Speaker 3: face so many lefty often and I feel like more
- 17:57Speaker 3: comfortable hitting against right hand the pature. Think about it,
- 18:03Speaker 3: how I've been feeling the last three month every time
- 18:05Speaker 3: you got to fade lefty guy like is now yeah
- 18:08Speaker 3: this guy?
- 18:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that's good and that makes it tough though, No,
- 18:13Speaker 2: I'm glad.
- 18:14Speaker 3: I'm proud of God to the end other day because
- 18:16Speaker 3: he being helped me a lot. Tru always will he
- 18:20Speaker 3: always will help me.
- 18:21Speaker 2: And and like you said earlier, going back a little
- 18:24Speaker 2: bit early in the season, well, going into this season,
- 18:28Speaker 2: you guys had some really high expectations.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Yeah, you had Geno, you had Naylor.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Obviously yourself, a couple of other guys, Meryl Kelly, other guys.
- 18:37Speaker 2: And then as the season started progressing, uh, you know,
- 18:40Speaker 2: some guys, some guys got injured, and then some trades happened,
- 18:44Speaker 2: and you know, the season now looks like what it
- 18:46Speaker 2: looks like, and so was it how how tough was
- 18:49Speaker 2: it to to kind of get through that, I mean
- 18:51Speaker 2: seeing saying goodbye to guys, you know, seeing the injuries
- 18:54Speaker 2: and whatnot, and you know, just kind of the season
- 18:57Speaker 2: not looking exactly how you saw it at the beginning
- 19:01Speaker 2: of the year.
- 19:01Speaker 3: Bro. It was very tough because and I remember a
- 19:04Speaker 3: sprint trainer. The thing was calling like, you know, to
- 19:07Speaker 3: get some starting pitching. We had like a seven a
- 19:09Speaker 3: starting pitcher and sprint trainer. So Spring trainer started getting
- 19:13Speaker 3: people like her. And when the season started, like as
- 19:16Speaker 3: you say, like we had a lot of expectations and
- 19:19Speaker 3: you know, the first guy I think got her was Puck,
- 19:22Speaker 3: a J. Puck and the second guy was Jmar So
- 19:27Speaker 3: we lost our closer in the settupment, we can say,
- 19:31Speaker 3: and man, it was it was. It was kind of tough,
- 19:34Speaker 3: you know, being out with those guys. And then we
- 19:39Speaker 3: lost Corbyn byrn, so it was it was it was tough. Yeah,
- 19:44Speaker 3: I mean, it's been tough.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Tough.
- 19:46Speaker 3: You know, we was trying to figure out how to battle,
- 19:49Speaker 3: how to fight through those injuries, and we started getting
- 19:52Speaker 3: more pitching, more pitching out and then when the tray
- 19:57Speaker 3: was like approaching, you know, people start getting like, you know,
- 20:01Speaker 3: like thinking about it, like what what are they gonna do?
- 20:04Speaker 3: Are they gonna sell it? Are they gonna buy? Bro?
- 20:06Speaker 3: We went to Pitchburg and we scored the first game
- 20:10Speaker 3: in eleven inning. We want that game, one to nothing
- 20:14Speaker 3: in eleven inning. The next two game we got shut out,
- 20:17Speaker 3: you know, and they was started asking like what's going
- 20:20Speaker 3: on with us? You know, and I guessing like people
- 20:24Speaker 3: was worrying about to get Trey, you know, like a
- 20:27Speaker 3: king a navy. And we went to the to Detroit
- 20:31Speaker 3: and we got swept wes currently like fire run and
- 20:35Speaker 3: three again. You know, it wasn't us. So that's when
- 20:38Speaker 3: you know, when Gino got Trey. Uh great, chick, may
- 20:43Speaker 3: all those.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Guys tell me about Geno? I know, uh, bro here
- 20:47Speaker 1: the best.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Yeah you you you enjoyed picking a lot of people's
- 20:50Speaker 2: brains and Gino it's gotta be one of the best
- 20:54Speaker 2: people personally and baseball wise.
- 20:57Speaker 1: What did he What did he teach you?
- 20:59Speaker 3: How to play every day? The important to play every day,
- 21:04Speaker 3: Like people don't realize how much important is for us
- 21:07Speaker 3: playing every day in the field.
- 21:09Speaker 1: It's so hard to play everything.
- 21:11Speaker 3: It is so hard, but to the end of the day,
- 21:14Speaker 3: help you to your career. One of my favorite players
- 21:17Speaker 3: was corek and Jr. Of what he did, you know,
- 21:20Speaker 3: playing every day? So Gino since he can't hear last
- 21:25Speaker 3: year he teached.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Me that and so what is it about playing every day?
- 21:30Speaker 2: Like what did he tell you? How to prepare or
- 21:34Speaker 2: just simply mentally?
- 21:36Speaker 3: Mentally? It was more mentally, yeah, like how to prepare
- 21:40Speaker 3: my body, how to be healthy every single day, you know,
- 21:45Speaker 3: especially that guy like I going to the free agency
- 21:48Speaker 3: next year, you know, and he always say that because
- 21:51Speaker 3: like the most important is how other teams see you
- 21:56Speaker 3: when you play every day. You know. He told me,
- 21:59Speaker 3: like it's playing important when you play every day. Then
- 22:01Speaker 3: that guy I play only one hundred a games. Yeah,
- 22:04Speaker 3: you know, you got more value when you play every day.
- 22:06Speaker 3: You know.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Playing the outfield is one thing, but playing shortstop every
- 22:12Speaker 2: day like that mental that mental side that the mental
- 22:18Speaker 2: side of playing shortstop every day is really really hard.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Like it's something that I've had to learn this year.
- 22:26Speaker 2: And you know, physically, you know, physical is one thing.
- 22:28Speaker 2: You know, we work out, everybody works out, not everybody
- 22:33Speaker 2: takes care of their body. But I do a really
- 22:35Speaker 2: good job and take care of my body. But even
- 22:37Speaker 2: even with that, like just showing up every day knowing
- 22:42Speaker 2: that you have to take ground balls, you have to
- 22:44Speaker 2: work on two or three different, three or four different
- 22:48Speaker 2: aspects of what could possibly happen. And you know, because
- 22:52Speaker 2: in the outfield I would go, I would take my
- 22:54Speaker 2: ground balls. I would shag a little bit, shag like
- 22:56Speaker 2: a group and then go in like you.
- 22:57Speaker 3: Know, yeah, that's what I want. I said, that's that's
- 22:59Speaker 3: the harder part and play short stuff like you gotta
- 23:02Speaker 3: prepare yourself every single day everything.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Day game like day games like com zone changes, field changes.
- 23:09Speaker 3: I love to to, you know, to catch boy every day.
- 23:12Speaker 3: But sometimes men, you feel your body like I gotta
- 23:15Speaker 3: take the day this day and sometimes like man, we're
- 23:20Speaker 3: half and again. You know, it's it's kind of it's
- 23:23Speaker 3: kind of hard, like that's what I told you, Like
- 23:25Speaker 3: people don't realize how the infield prepare, especially.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Short stuff, especially short it's hard.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Like for me, like I like to to get a
- 23:34Speaker 3: flip fungo every single day and you know the spiel
- 23:38Speaker 3: of the ball something you gotta go for a slow run.
- 23:42Speaker 3: You know, it's it's hard. It is hard. It's a lot.
- 23:45Speaker 1: The thing that for me this year that.
- 23:49Speaker 2: I really have noticed since I've been playing short every
- 23:52Speaker 2: day is going from city to city and how much
- 23:56Speaker 2: the field changes.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Bro like the changes a lot every day.
- 24:02Speaker 3: I feel. I feel that's the worst part on playing
- 24:05Speaker 3: on the infield, because you gotta know the field where
- 24:12Speaker 3: you're playing.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Yes, it's so important.
- 24:15Speaker 3: It's different when you're playing Cincinnati, play here.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Then you play here, then when you go to Texas
- 24:20Speaker 2: or you guys turf on the infield and then it gets.
- 24:23Speaker 1: The grass and then oh, Toronto, bro or Toronto exact.
- 24:26Speaker 3: When the that grassy turf is way harder than us. Yes,
- 24:31Speaker 3: the bowl bouncing more.
- 24:33Speaker 2: And so you have to take these ground balls just
- 24:35Speaker 2: to even see and who knows, you may have got
- 24:39Speaker 2: in at two in the morning. You have to go
- 24:41Speaker 2: to the field go early because you can't take these
- 24:44Speaker 2: ground balls during VP.
- 24:45Speaker 3: I don't like it.
- 24:46Speaker 1: I don't like any person.
- 24:47Speaker 3: I don't like it doing the MVP. I like to
- 24:50Speaker 3: do early. I want to do it when I do
- 24:53Speaker 3: all my stuff, you know, I gotta like we was
- 24:55Speaker 3: in Milwaukee last years and that feel, you know, it's
- 24:58Speaker 3: kind of like trink it the infield. Sometimes you think
- 25:02Speaker 3: the boy is gonna be slow, but that l play
- 25:06Speaker 3: faster and he's hard. The infiel is hard, so I
- 25:11Speaker 3: gotta go early to check all the dimension of the infield. Sometimes,
- 25:15Speaker 3: like you you saw me, like I get down like
- 25:18Speaker 3: a squad. It's don't be gonna tie you. It's because
- 25:21Speaker 3: like I'm I'm thinking about, like what are you gonna do?
- 25:24Speaker 3: If he he hit me this grumble in this area,
- 25:28Speaker 3: then I know it's really bad, you know, Like I'm thinking,
- 25:31Speaker 3: like sometimes I worry about it, like how am I
- 25:33Speaker 3: gonna do it?
- 25:34Speaker 2: When I get up the middle sometimes and there's been
- 25:36Speaker 2: a lot of people at second base, I sometimes I
- 25:40Speaker 2: get worried because there's a lot of cleat marks, and
- 25:42Speaker 2: where those cleat marks are that's where the ball takes
- 25:44Speaker 2: bad hops.
- 25:45Speaker 1: So like you said, I'm like, Okay, if he hits a.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Ball around this area, I have to go because if
- 25:50Speaker 2: I don't go, that ball will take a bad hop,
- 25:53Speaker 2: and I don't want it to take that bad hop.
- 25:54Speaker 1: So I have to go, or I'm little off to
- 25:56Speaker 1: the side, all right.
- 25:57Speaker 2: You know, a freshly dragged field old the first inning,
- 26:02Speaker 2: or you know, whenever they drag it like Okay, I
- 26:04Speaker 2: don't have to play so aggressive because the ball.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Is you know, it's going to be pretty sm.
- 26:08Speaker 3: It happened to me on the Detroit I have make
- 26:12Speaker 3: two aer on one play fielding arrow and throwing arrow
- 26:16Speaker 3: because the ball gave me on the front. But I
- 26:19Speaker 3: was I was talking with Marte during that plass a man.
- 26:23Speaker 3: I was talking like, hey, to my right side, these
- 26:27Speaker 3: things feel really bad. If you get a grumble, like
- 26:29Speaker 3: a hush up, I gotta tack this ball with two hands.
- 26:32Speaker 3: I was talking like doing that bad and literally like
- 26:36Speaker 3: pin second later, give me that grumble. They catch a
- 26:39Speaker 3: Roger And I was like, I see the grumble like happening,
- 26:43Speaker 3: and I said, I gotta go get it. So when
- 26:45Speaker 3: I went for the ball, I wasn't toss bat like tough,
- 26:50Speaker 3: Bown and I make fielding arrow and the ball get
- 26:54Speaker 3: in front when I throw it, bro it was like
- 26:58Speaker 3: over the face.
- 27:00Speaker 1: It happens.
- 27:01Speaker 3: You see, like how hard it is for us, like
- 27:04Speaker 3: a judgment and all those those.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Field cities, different climates, all that, all the time stuff
- 27:09Speaker 2: you talked about Marte, how's it playing with him? He's
- 27:11Speaker 2: like probably one of the top second basement now he
- 27:13Speaker 2: is top second basements, in the in the in the league.
- 27:16Speaker 1: How's it playing with him?
- 27:17Speaker 3: It's amazing, bro, what he can do when he healthy. Yeah,
- 27:23Speaker 3: it is. It's something like you gotta enjoy it, you know,
- 27:26Speaker 3: you gotta see it and enjoy the show. Yeah. Yeah,
- 27:29Speaker 3: you're gonna put a good show on both sides, both
- 27:32Speaker 3: sides of Sila. You know everything. He's he's an amazing player. Yes,
- 27:37Speaker 3: I love playing with him.
- 27:38Speaker 2: I love, I love, I love really I love getting
- 27:41Speaker 2: to talk to him and everything.
- 27:43Speaker 1: He's just a really a really good person. Yeah, and
- 27:47Speaker 1: so I can only imagine playing with him. It's gotta
- 27:48Speaker 1: be a lot of fun.
- 27:50Speaker 3: And especially like, uh, all the process have been through
- 27:55Speaker 3: since he lost his money. Knows, it's hard. It's been
- 27:59Speaker 3: hard for him. And I'm I'm glad. I'm proud for
- 28:01Speaker 3: him because he he'd been doing a great job and
- 28:05Speaker 3: hat some fun.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, and now it's time to bring relief and
- 28:08Speaker 2: get more baseball, get more with the guy code. We're
- 28:10Speaker 2: gonna take a look at some some moments that were
- 28:12Speaker 2: caught on camera. So this first one, the Giants scored
- 28:16Speaker 2: a run against the Cubs on a ball that hit.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Off the the runners head. So let's see this. It
- 28:25Speaker 1: hit off the runner's head. So I didn't see this,
- 28:29Speaker 1: so let me see this.
- 28:30Speaker 3: So you always see something oh wow, okay, you always
- 28:35Speaker 3: see something new.
- 28:36Speaker 1: I've never seen the.
- 28:38Speaker 3: Hard part on that. That's a narrow for yeah.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, he made it.
- 28:47Speaker 2: That's a that's a perfect throw the first baseman and
- 28:51Speaker 2: that's Tuck. Okay, Tucker, he's got to wear an era. Golly,
- 28:57Speaker 2: that's a tough error right there.
- 28:59Speaker 1: Boy, I know he was pistol up.
- 29:02Speaker 3: Happy. Yeah, he will happy. Okay.
- 29:05Speaker 2: The next one is speaking of the Giants. A fan
- 29:09Speaker 2: showed up at Oracle Park on a boat. They have
- 29:13Speaker 2: boats in the I I think I saw that. I
- 29:15Speaker 2: haven't seen this. So oh he just came to the
- 29:19Speaker 2: park on a boat. He didn't had to get a ticket.
- 29:22Speaker 3: That's the best way.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Did he have to get a ticket?
- 29:24Speaker 3: I don't think. So good for him. That is big.
- 29:29Speaker 1: That was amazing stuff right there.
- 29:30Speaker 3: Boy.
- 29:32Speaker 1: So I wonder if they came and found him.
- 29:34Speaker 3: They gotta put that clean the Hall of Fame.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Yeah, that's amazing. That's that's some rich people's stuff right there.
- 29:40Speaker 2: So all right before no, I know they stand out
- 29:44Speaker 2: there for the to catch like a home or.
- 29:47Speaker 3: Getting into the field.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, So and then obviously we all know shoreb
- 29:52Speaker 2: Head he had a four homer night he uh he
- 29:58Speaker 2: now has forty nine. He's forty. I feel like he
- 30:02Speaker 2: hits forty and fifty every year.
- 30:03Speaker 3: Bro the last yek yeah, being like forty, I guess yeah.
- 30:06Speaker 2: I wonder how many homers he had that can hit.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Oh and Gino had a four homer Oh yeah this
- 30:13Speaker 2: year too.
- 30:14Speaker 3: He got he got three against the same picture. I think,
- 30:18Speaker 3: uh Holmes from the oh the Bread.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, I know you're talking about so like when
- 30:26Speaker 2: you're seeing I know obviously this is amazing. I don't
- 30:30Speaker 2: want to discount this, but you got to see Witness
- 30:32Speaker 2: one live, right, So how was that like when you
- 30:35Speaker 2: after you hit three?
- 30:36Speaker 3: Right? What do you I was, I was in the
- 30:39Speaker 3: dog out. He said he going to hit the numb
- 30:41Speaker 3: before he said no, no, I told her, Okay, he
- 30:45Speaker 3: said he coming for the four. Yeah, he's coming for that.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Did he say anything?
- 30:49Speaker 3: He didn't say an, he didn't say he didn't say anything.
- 30:52Speaker 3: It was like four astraight man and.
- 30:55Speaker 1: And none of them were They're not like lucky homers.
- 30:56Speaker 3: They're like it was a bomb.
- 30:58Speaker 2: He was all bomb bomb, Yeah, and I wont I
- 31:00Speaker 2: wonder what it's like. I mean, I've had some three
- 31:02Speaker 2: homer games, but going for the fourth.
- 31:04Speaker 3: Never, I never asked him like if he got that
- 31:07Speaker 3: in the mind in his mind to hit the number four,
- 31:11Speaker 3: like thinking about like, oh I got another shed through
- 31:13Speaker 3: hell four.
- 31:15Speaker 2: I've had so I've had six three homer games. Never
- 31:19Speaker 2: six six three hold games and on the fourth what
- 31:22Speaker 2: what a power?
- 31:24Speaker 3: What a power? Heater? No?
- 31:27Speaker 1: Hi, I don't know thirty nine.
- 31:30Speaker 3: I don't know how your number.
- 31:31Speaker 1: I don't know how many numbers. How many home runs
- 31:33Speaker 1: I have?
- 31:34Speaker 3: Do you have?
- 31:35Speaker 1: How many hits? I don't know.
- 31:37Speaker 2: I don't pay attention to it because it's so long,
- 31:40Speaker 2: and my goal is to be in the Hall of
- 31:43Speaker 2: Fame and so like in I feel like in that
- 31:47Speaker 2: process the numbers are kind of irrelevant just because I'm
- 31:54Speaker 2: playing every day, the numbers are going to constantly change it, right, right,
- 31:58Speaker 2: So yeah, I don't really I'll look at it in
- 32:01Speaker 2: the end, but you know, just like to your point, like,
- 32:05Speaker 2: I'm just really the only way I'm really going to
- 32:07Speaker 2: be able to get there is by playing every day.
- 32:09Speaker 2: You have to be available every day. To put up
- 32:12Speaker 2: whatever stats whatever it is.
- 32:15Speaker 3: We don't know the stuff. We just know that stuff.
- 32:18Speaker 3: How we do it this year, right, you know exactly.
- 32:21Speaker 3: We got to see this coreboard sometimes, like to see
- 32:24Speaker 3: how the pitch are throwing or throwing. Obviously we gotta
- 32:30Speaker 3: see our stuff.
- 32:31Speaker 2: But I feel you you know what I'm saying, it's
- 32:33Speaker 2: just like stuff. Stuff like that is just I mean,
- 32:38Speaker 2: it changes all the time, you know, it changes from
- 32:41Speaker 2: one day to the next, and so there's no real
- 32:44Speaker 2: point in paying attention to it when I'm just a
- 32:48Speaker 2: very process oriented person and so I I love just
- 32:52Speaker 2: sticking to my process and letting them letting the results
- 32:56Speaker 2: be the results, like they're they're gonna it's it's gonna
- 32:58Speaker 2: be there in the end, like you're gonna get your
- 33:00Speaker 2: hits or you're gonna.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Whatever kind of player you are.
- 33:03Speaker 2: I remember Dustin Pedroia told me this my first year,
- 33:07Speaker 2: maybe that was my second year, and he was like,
- 33:09Speaker 2: whatever kind of player you are. If you're a too
- 33:13Speaker 2: eighty hitter, you're gonna be somewhere around to eighty at
- 33:15Speaker 2: the end of the at the end of the year.
- 33:17Speaker 2: If you're a three hundred hitter, you're gonna be somewhere
- 33:20Speaker 2: around three hundred at the end of the year. So
- 33:22Speaker 2: that was one thing that.
- 33:23Speaker 3: I heard the Sorry, I heard the same Toory from
- 33:27Speaker 3: Beltra Okay, the same thing that I told Andrews. Like
- 33:30Speaker 3: belt was hitting like one hundred and something in the
- 33:34Speaker 3: beginning of the year for like the first three months
- 33:36Speaker 3: two months, and he was like, seeing guy, I was
- 33:39Speaker 3: hitting like three forty. And he told Andrews. Andrew told
- 33:43Speaker 3: me that story. He said, you see those guys like
- 33:48Speaker 3: to the end of the year, they're gonna he exactly
- 33:50Speaker 3: what they're supposed to hit to the end of the season.
- 33:54Speaker 3: And I was hitting I'm gonna hit three hundred to
- 33:57Speaker 3: the end of the year. And that's exactly how he
- 33:59Speaker 3: did it.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Go Yeah, that's exactly how it goes.
- 34:03Speaker 3: So how that make you feel? What is in your
- 34:05Speaker 3: mind after the second homer? You got this second homer,
- 34:10Speaker 3: got career.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Three homer games.
- 34:12Speaker 2: After the second homer, you know you're going for it,
- 34:16Speaker 2: or just because you didn't really go for it, It's okay,
- 34:20Speaker 2: to be honest.
- 34:21Speaker 1: The fourth one, yes, not the third, the third one.
- 34:24Speaker 2: The fourth one is like, okay, how many times are
- 34:27Speaker 2: you going to get to three homers?
- 34:28Speaker 1: Which is not very very off.
- 34:31Speaker 2: So like if you get to three, it's like you
- 34:35Speaker 2: have to try for the fourth, but then you hit
- 34:38Speaker 2: three without trying. So it's like it's that balance of
- 34:42Speaker 2: figuring out like Okay, if you go up there and
- 34:44Speaker 2: try think about how many times you went up there
- 34:46Speaker 2: to try to hit a homer and.
- 34:47Speaker 3: Actually did it well, it is in your mind. Definitely
- 34:50Speaker 3: your mind, because sometime I've been getting like a lead
- 34:53Speaker 3: off homer. Yeah, my first about homer and then I say, man,
- 34:59Speaker 3: talking with God, like man, I never hit two of
- 35:02Speaker 3: my career, so oh yeah, I would like I guess mighty,
- 35:06Speaker 3: like you know, like thinking about it, like what about
- 35:09Speaker 3: if you happened that's about you know, what about you
- 35:11Speaker 3: my last back? You know, it's kind of like cool,
- 35:15Speaker 3: how how we think at the same time, Like you
- 35:18Speaker 3: hit since career three homer, like going through the four
- 35:24Speaker 3: like I see he hit four against Pitcher. He gave
- 35:28Speaker 3: the last back again, position player, that's heat pop up.
- 35:32Speaker 3: Oh yeah, he pop he said, like oh if you
- 35:35Speaker 3: see the interview, he said, oh I wish I wish
- 35:39Speaker 3: him try that heat my last about for home for
- 35:43Speaker 3: the fair? You know, yeah, you just try to be
- 35:45Speaker 3: like natural, like he tried to hit a home that
- 35:48Speaker 3: was Papa against position player.
- 35:51Speaker 1: And so you have to really just stick with the process.
- 35:53Speaker 2: And that's that's what I've really learned going into the
- 35:56Speaker 2: next point, Like it talks about like you enjoy really
- 35:59Speaker 2: having on the field, and I've learned that through playing shortstop,
- 36:03Speaker 2: like how to have fun on field because you don't
- 36:05Speaker 2: really have fun. It's hard to have fun playing shortstop
- 36:08Speaker 2: because there's so much that you have to think about,
- 36:10Speaker 2: so much that you have to do.
- 36:12Speaker 1: But I've learned that if I just get lost in
- 36:15Speaker 1: my process, right, get lost in.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Stuff that's not baseball, if that makes sense, like my moves,
- 36:24Speaker 2: like my practice, getting lost in that it helps me
- 36:29Speaker 2: to where when it's time in the in the eighth
- 36:32Speaker 2: inning and it's two outs and a man at second
- 36:35Speaker 2: and third, like I can still have fun going after
- 36:38Speaker 2: the ball the same way then it was in the
- 36:41Speaker 2: first inning.
- 36:42Speaker 3: Right.
- 36:42Speaker 2: And So I think I want to hear from you
- 36:46Speaker 2: your perspective on having fun and is it a process
- 36:49Speaker 2: that you can now not think about baseball to have
- 36:52Speaker 2: fun or how is it for you that you get
- 36:55Speaker 2: to have so much fun on the field.
- 36:58Speaker 3: Just enjoy what I'm doing. You know what you do,
- 37:01Speaker 3: like having fun with you guys. Sometimes our picture like
- 37:04Speaker 3: been throwing a lot of fastball and I said, man,
- 37:07Speaker 3: if he throw this boat to this guy right here,
- 37:10Speaker 3: you want to be a bomb. And sometimes I scream wow,
- 37:13Speaker 3: you know, like even if it's our picture. But for me,
- 37:17Speaker 3: I just I just tried to have fun. We don't
- 37:19Speaker 3: matter how how in my day go don't matter, like
- 37:22Speaker 3: what I went through at home, Like when I go
- 37:25Speaker 3: to the field, you try to have fun, doesn't matter
- 37:28Speaker 3: how I gonna do it. I'm gonna have fun for sure.
- 37:31Speaker 3: I don't. I don't. I don't care if you're going
- 37:33Speaker 3: off for three with three strike out, I'm gonna have fun.
- 37:37Speaker 3: I'm probably gonna have fun because see Marte, see plays
- 37:40Speaker 3: all the side and see Corvin, Carol Hill, Homer. You know, like, bro,
- 37:44Speaker 3: this thing fun with other people other people. Yeah, yeah,
- 37:47Speaker 3: I bro, I'm goo with you. Man. Yeah, you know
- 37:51Speaker 3: you gotta you gotta ask show. I kind of like, uh, don't.
- 37:55Speaker 3: One time in Japanese, Yeah, and he told the evil
- 38:02Speaker 3: coach yeah evil yeah, yeah, you know, he like, do
- 38:05Speaker 3: you do you see how he called me? Yeah, he
- 38:08Speaker 3: called me dumb, said he start laughing. You know, like
- 38:11Speaker 3: I like to have fun like with stuff like that.
- 38:14Speaker 3: I want to. I tried to. I want to make they, Oh,
- 38:19Speaker 3: they got happy, you know, even if he got hard day.
- 38:22Speaker 3: You know, I tried to make that guy smiley.
- 38:24Speaker 2: I feel like when you take don't think about yourself
- 38:26Speaker 2: and you try and make everyone else happy. And obviously
- 38:29Speaker 2: you don't want to be the person that that only
- 38:32Speaker 2: does stuff for other people, but you do invest, you know,
- 38:36Speaker 2: positive energy and other people.
- 38:37Speaker 3: I feel like you've got to learn this, like the
- 38:39Speaker 3: situation like when you're gonna do it?
- 38:41Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, that's part of it as well. I want
- 38:43Speaker 2: to go back to young Jerry again. Shout out to
- 38:46Speaker 2: toy for the great nickname. So you from the d
- 38:48Speaker 2: R and tell me from there did you play any
- 38:52Speaker 2: other sports?
- 38:53Speaker 3: Basketball?
- 38:54Speaker 1: Basketball? You played basketball? So when did you stop playing basketball?
- 38:58Speaker 3: I still playing basketball?
- 38:59Speaker 1: You still?
- 39:00Speaker 3: Yeah? Okay?
- 39:00Speaker 1: So then you signed at what age?
- 39:04Speaker 3: Sixteen years old?
- 39:05Speaker 1: At sixteen?
- 39:05Speaker 3: Who did you sign with?
- 39:10Speaker 2: Make sure that the viewers don't know my bad okay?
- 39:14Speaker 2: So sign with the diamonback sixteen years old? And when
- 39:18Speaker 2: did you come over to the States.
- 39:20Speaker 3: Two thousand and seventeen for intuitionally okay for instructions. Yeah,
- 39:26Speaker 3: that was my first time.
- 39:27Speaker 1: Did you stay over? You didn't have to go back
- 39:30Speaker 1: to the.
- 39:31Speaker 3: I get back to the art after the intuitionally.
- 39:34Speaker 1: Okay, so then you come over and how is your
- 39:37Speaker 1: minor league experience? Did you love it?
- 39:40Speaker 3: I love it, but I have some in Spain brother,
- 39:42Speaker 3: And then it teached me to grown or the player
- 39:46Speaker 3: I am right now? You know how to deal with
- 39:48Speaker 3: some time with coaches, you know, you know, we've been
- 39:51Speaker 3: through a lot of stuff when we are minor le
- 39:55Speaker 3: and especially like my fish year here and you to
- 40:00Speaker 3: stay no English, right, I gotta do like beans. I
- 40:05Speaker 3: don't know how to say beans at least I gotta
- 40:08Speaker 3: say cheecken. But it was like just pointing, you know,
- 40:11Speaker 3: it was really hard to I judge on this culture,
- 40:17Speaker 3: you know, and how to on my teammate there was
- 40:21Speaker 3: there was both Blacky. They just teach me and help
- 40:27Speaker 3: me how how to deal with different situations.
- 40:30Speaker 2: Did you have to go to like English classes, a
- 40:33Speaker 2: lot of English class Yeah? And so when would you
- 40:35Speaker 2: do that before the game or like on the computer?
- 40:38Speaker 3: How was before the game before the game before they
- 40:40Speaker 3: always been before the game. I remember two doing eighteen
- 40:44Speaker 3: my first time playing the stay like my English teacher was.
- 40:53Speaker 3: She was American and she only speak English. So how
- 40:57Speaker 3: you gonna learn if you, like, I don't know exactly
- 41:01Speaker 3: what she's saying, if you don't have like, how you
- 41:04Speaker 3: gonna learn if you have conversation with her. So that's
- 41:07Speaker 3: that's something that I talked with the with the boss,
- 41:11Speaker 3: like the English boss, because she was Bi language, and
- 41:13Speaker 3: I said, we needed more more English teacher. They gotta
- 41:17Speaker 3: be Bi language. So when I went to Hia, my
- 41:22Speaker 3: teacher there, she was speaking both language. So that's how
- 41:26Speaker 3: I been like, you know, getting like way way better.
- 41:29Speaker 3: When I went to the team double, it was a
- 41:33Speaker 3: saying like she speaks Spanish. So for me, it was
- 41:36Speaker 3: like very very like very good process because she can't
- 41:40Speaker 3: explain to me whether I were men. You know, I
- 41:44Speaker 3: feel I still learning, you know, I feel like I
- 41:47Speaker 3: still work in my English because we never stopped learning. Yeah,
- 41:50Speaker 3: so it always likes something new. Yeah, it's like I'm
- 41:54Speaker 3: proud right now, like we do anything.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, I'm very proud of you.
- 41:58Speaker 2: Well you're proud you talk to me all the time,
- 42:00Speaker 2: I know, but I didn't. I mean, like when we're
- 42:02Speaker 2: talking on the field, like to be able to come
- 42:04Speaker 2: on and yeah, so I'm gonna tell you about the
- 42:09Speaker 2: story that Toy was talking about when I first came up, right,
- 42:12Speaker 2: like to your point, earlier veterans were around the league,
- 42:15Speaker 2: like veterans kind of randomly, there wasn't that many.
- 42:17Speaker 1: Young guys coming up.
- 42:18Speaker 3: And so what what year was debut?
- 42:21Speaker 1: My debut in fourteen?
- 42:23Speaker 2: That was fourteen, And so I remember coming up and
- 42:27Speaker 2: I'm just like you, like I love talking, I love
- 42:30Speaker 2: I love my boys like I really love my boys,
- 42:34Speaker 2: especially at the field, like you just you just grow
- 42:37Speaker 2: to love them like you're with them more than your family.
- 42:40Speaker 2: And so all my boys were in double A. I
- 42:43Speaker 2: started in Double A and then I went to Triple A,
- 42:45Speaker 2: and we all kind of moved together in Double A
- 42:47Speaker 2: and Triple A. And then I got the call to
- 42:49Speaker 2: the big leagues and we had a lot of veterans there,
- 42:52Speaker 2: and I remember, like it was they weren't playing great.
- 42:56Speaker 2: And in Boston, if you're not playing good, like the
- 42:59Speaker 2: fans are, you know, be right, And so it was
- 43:01Speaker 2: just a kind of like a bad situation in the
- 43:03Speaker 2: locker room just because guys, you know, the team wasn't
- 43:06Speaker 2: playing great. And I remember coming up like I was.
- 43:09Speaker 2: I think I may have been the only rookie maybe
- 43:10Speaker 2: another guy, but I did not enjoy it at all.
- 43:14Speaker 2: I really hated it because there was just a lot
- 43:17Speaker 2: of just saltiness going around. And I'm not saying there
- 43:20Speaker 2: I understand. I definitely do understand now, But I remember
- 43:24Speaker 2: going to Toy and tell him, like, I don't want
- 43:25Speaker 2: to be here. I want to get sent down. Can
- 43:28Speaker 2: you tell them to send me down so I can
- 43:30Speaker 2: go have fun playing baseball? And you know, he really
- 43:35Speaker 2: just kind of talked to me and kind of was
- 43:38Speaker 2: like my dad, like yeah, and and like that's how
- 43:42Speaker 2: our relate. I mean, our relationship started prior to that,
- 43:46Speaker 2: but that was that story. And like you're lucky you
- 43:49Speaker 2: get to have someone like Toy just because, I mean,
- 43:53Speaker 2: the energy that he invests in every player is unbelievable and.
- 43:59Speaker 1: I don't even know how he has that kind of
- 44:00Speaker 1: bandwidth to do stuff like that.
- 44:02Speaker 2: And I remember talking to him about my wife and
- 44:06Speaker 2: talking to him about baseball and just about just anything.
- 44:09Speaker 2: And this is during the game, Like we he would
- 44:12Speaker 2: just stop whatever he's doing and we would talk during
- 44:14Speaker 2: the game. And so I'm sure he does that with
- 44:15Speaker 2: you guys.
- 44:16Speaker 3: Yeah, no, he does, he does, definitely he does. Yeah,
- 44:19Speaker 3: it was it happened to me the sain like Q.
- 44:23Speaker 3: But I didn't, you know, I didn't express myself. I
- 44:27Speaker 3: just I was like very frustrated, like I'm the top
- 44:31Speaker 3: of guy with If I feel something, I said it.
- 44:33Speaker 3: But sometimes I know, like you know, I gotta shut
- 44:38Speaker 3: out my mouth, you know. And we had some player
- 44:41Speaker 3: on twenty two, twenty one, like man, I say, I
- 44:45Speaker 3: don't have him phone right right here. I gotta I
- 44:47Speaker 3: gotta go down, like on twenty twenty two, even in
- 44:51Speaker 3: mind only, that was my worst season as a player,
- 44:55Speaker 3: you know. And I put a lot of pressure on
- 44:58Speaker 3: myself that year, you know, but I didn't. I didn't
- 45:03Speaker 3: expread myself twenty o. The coaching, probably my engine, probably
- 45:07Speaker 3: my family, you know, but you know that that helped me.
- 45:12Speaker 3: That helped me, Like I think Toy feel that and
- 45:16Speaker 3: he told me your story. Yeah on twenty two. That's
- 45:19Speaker 3: when I came to you in twenty two, and I
- 45:21Speaker 3: asked all those questions, you know, like how to deal
- 45:26Speaker 3: in different situations because I situation minor league. But it
- 45:29Speaker 3: wasn't like this like we are players, you know. It
- 45:31Speaker 3: was like when coaches and all this stuff, but no
- 45:34Speaker 3: with like veteran guy.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, and like you said, the times are different.
- 45:39Speaker 2: Back then was you know, more veterans, and now it's
- 45:44Speaker 2: more young guys. So it's a little easier to express yourself.
- 45:48Speaker 3: Let me tell your story. I'm twenty twenty. We were
- 45:51Speaker 3: playing the alternate side, you know, because call the pandemic
- 45:53Speaker 3: and all boongarden. I got hurt. I think his back.
- 45:58Speaker 3: He was her so he was throwing the altar side.
- 46:00Speaker 3: I was leading off and literally like I would like
- 46:06Speaker 3: to work on my skill. You know, I was working
- 46:09Speaker 3: on my bunning. Okay, yeah, but I didn't know he
- 46:12Speaker 3: was hurting his back, you know. So you know this bro.
- 46:18Speaker 3: The first I tried to bond. The first try, I
- 46:20Speaker 3: didn't bump, and he like, I see his expression, but
- 46:23Speaker 3: you know, I'm innocent and I had no idea what's
- 46:26Speaker 3: going on. He told me the first boat right here
- 46:30Speaker 3: to my hair. Yo. The second time he threw like
- 46:34Speaker 3: right in the middle of my bunning and I was safe.
- 46:37Speaker 3: So when he went to the dog out, he was
- 46:39Speaker 3: like screaming like you know, I wasn't I wasn't there.
- 46:43Speaker 3: And second bait was three out and I remember just
- 46:46Speaker 3: Barfield the boss and mind. He run to me like
- 46:49Speaker 3: he don't do it. Don't do it, yo, what do
- 46:52Speaker 3: you mean like, don't just don't do it? Yo? What
- 46:54Speaker 3: do you mean don't bond against him? Yo? This is
- 46:59Speaker 3: my that's how I am, that's me.
- 47:01Speaker 1: That's part of your game, part of my gain.
- 47:04Speaker 3: So that happened that year. So on twenty one and
- 47:08Speaker 3: during spring training, I gotta face him. Oh gosh, So
- 47:13Speaker 3: he was like he was he was literally done. And
- 47:16Speaker 3: we saw me in the on deck circle and he said,
- 47:20Speaker 3: oh one more hit it and he was like first
- 47:24Speaker 3: pace ball, second pagball. But I was told his story
- 47:28Speaker 3: to the old player like Eski was there, Peralta was there,
- 47:31Speaker 3: Martelle was there, and Drew I was there that year
- 47:34Speaker 3: twenty two and on twenty one. Sorry, and I was
- 47:40Speaker 3: like you know too, oh you know what's coming to all?
- 47:42Speaker 3: Like heater, I was like seeing my boy, like I
- 47:47Speaker 3: want to cross this guy because I don't forget what
- 47:50Speaker 3: he did to me. And Bro literally like I think
- 47:54Speaker 3: that's the hard ball. Even through that year ninety five
- 47:56Speaker 3: right here, oh he hear me, man, Bro he killing
- 48:02Speaker 3: me all those guys was passed, you know. And he said, oh,
- 48:06Speaker 3: I'm done.
- 48:07Speaker 1: He said, so I was were the first two pitches away?
- 48:12Speaker 3: It was away? Yeah, I said, okay, he coming with
- 48:15Speaker 3: that with that carter like middle end right now, I
- 48:17Speaker 3: gotta be ready. Bro, he naive us for that. No,
- 48:22Speaker 3: it's okay, it's okay. Well, you know, like he was,
- 48:26Speaker 3: I was like, different guy and I'm twenty two. When
- 48:29Speaker 3: I started playing for him, he came to me and said,
- 48:32Speaker 3: I'm sorry. That was the best part. Like because people
- 48:34Speaker 3: think about Bomb was a bad guy. He's seen a bag,
- 48:37Speaker 3: but he was bro. He was a great person, Like
- 48:40Speaker 3: he was a great teammate. And he came to me
- 48:42Speaker 3: and Bro, he said, oh, I'm sorry, you're like, I
- 48:44Speaker 3: hear you. I hear him purpose And because I thought
- 48:47Speaker 3: it was a different guy. You know, he thought I
- 48:50Speaker 3: was like cocky and like, you know, like I'm hilarious
- 48:53Speaker 3: whatever he's gonna call me. But you know, we get
- 48:56Speaker 3: like a really great relationship. And just sometimes when he
- 49:00Speaker 3: was speeching, you said, just playing by you like be you, Hey,
- 49:04Speaker 3: what are you thinking this in this situation? You know,
- 49:07Speaker 3: like thats how I feel in those last two years.
- 49:12Speaker 3: You know, it was it was funny. It was funny.
- 49:14Speaker 3: That was good. It was funny in the moment, like
- 49:16Speaker 3: everybody laughed because you know, everybody story they knew, but
- 49:19Speaker 3: the same the same way they get pissed because they say,
- 49:22Speaker 3: what about you if you got hurt?
- 49:24Speaker 1: Yeah, but he wasn't gonna hurt you. He just that's funny.
- 49:28Speaker 3: Okay.
- 49:29Speaker 2: So before we before we I let you go, we
- 49:32Speaker 2: gotta go to the field. I want to play because
- 49:35Speaker 2: you you you're one of the few hitters that have
- 49:39Speaker 2: more walks than strikeouts, and so I want to test
- 49:43Speaker 2: your skills with guessing balls and strikes. So we have
- 49:47Speaker 2: a game on here. It's called Master of the Zone.
- 49:52Speaker 1: Master of the Zone.
- 49:53Speaker 2: So what happens is they're going to show a pitch
- 49:55Speaker 2: and you're gonna have to guess if it's a ball
