Latest / The Most Important Question / TMIQ Today: The Future of Childhood Vaccines
Transcript
- 0:00[upbeat music] The president just signed an executive order telling your pediatrician to give your kid three separate shots instead of the incredible three-in-one MMR.
- 0:14The problem is those sh- three shots don't exist in the US, so the order says the shots should be split up once such products are domestically available.
- 0:23Uh, it also says to give every childhood vaccine at a separate visit, and then near the bottom, it tells the controversial new attorney general to start suing states over their vaccine schedules.
- 0:34Look, before the measles vaccine, way before 1971 when we combined it with shots for mumps and rubella, or German measles, uh, we had three to four million US cases a year, forty-eight thousand people hospitalized every year, four to five hundred dead kids a year.
- 0:49But thanks to everyone who came before all of us, uh, by the year 2000, we'd wiped it out entirely. That's not luck or executive action.
- 0:57That is throwing the kitchen sink at measles, like we did smoking and eventually AIDS. I call it compound action.
- 1:05The point is it's doing everything measurable we know we gotta do, and that's what it's gonna take to do this again. [upbeat music]
