- 1:36Feeling a lot better this week. Has everything been on your side
- 1:40of town this week, man. It's been a, it's been a busy
- 1:44week so far, man. We've got a couple projects.
- 1:46I've been working on couple, couple fun things around the
- 1:49house. Couple big things at work, so,
- 1:52it's been one of them weeks. I know.
- 1:53It's been me. I'm like that for you, too.
- 1:57Oh, yeah, I mean, it's fall. It's between sports work.
- 2:00Being absolutely crazy this month, which is what it is.
- 2:05I get a little Free in November, which November?
- 2:08And December even though I'm still working on some additional
- 2:12projects that were not as much as my time being focused having
- 2:17to do a bunch of stuff because the culmination is not till
- 2:20January cosine of that slow build, where this month is,
- 2:24like, here's everything go, do it, and then, okay, and you're
- 2:29going to get sick and then some fans don't get sick.
- 2:32So you're going to be feeling it.
- 2:34But it's All better. Now looking forward to a fun
- 2:38week of college football including we go that when NC
- 2:42State on Thursday night at 7:30 we're definitely talking about
- 2:48Know The Enemy this week, but we're going to kick it off here
- 2:51tonight is something that it's already been Rumblings because
- 2:55obviously we're seeing players under the transfer portal.
- 2:59And so me and Fran, couple weeks ago, kicked around well, how
- 3:03many do we need? And where do they need to be?
- 3:06So, we're going to look into that first.
- 3:09And then, we're going to do the normal stuff we do on Thursday
- 3:12night. So Brian, let's talk about it.
- 3:15Obviously, we did not have a bigger transfer portal.
- 3:19This year only took in about six players, only about nine left
- 3:25the as compared to someone like Duke who took in 13 Brown will
- 3:32send you on Robbie you took in the team kicked out about 19 so
- 3:37everybody's saying, look at do. Dishes are doing great.
- 3:40Elco came in and started booting guys and bringing a lot of
- 3:43people immediately and Is it something probably could have
- 3:47did probably but now we're at the point he at least has had
- 3:50the time to evaluate this roster and full and you know I think
- 3:55it's time we look into the portal next year.
- 3:57What I mean I know you feel the same way Brian.
- 4:00Yeah I think from a it almost seems like from from the
- 4:03perspective that prior had he was taking a little bit more of
- 4:06a conservative approach to year one, evaluating what we have and
- 4:10then making some moves after that whereas Elko and Duke
- 4:14Devlin took the more aggressive Approach and it's paid off for
- 4:17him. They've had some success early
- 4:18in this year. So, I mean, kudos to him up for
- 4:21being aggressive getting 13 in the portal, cutting some, some
- 4:25little more dead weight on the back end there.
- 4:27So me a good overall flip for him.
- 4:30And to be honest, you know, you said 13, I'm thinking 11:50
- 4:35baby. Even 1314 would be the number
- 4:38that we're looking at, shoot it for this offseason in terms of
- 4:44additions. We need to be aggressive this
- 4:47offseason in filling some of the holes.
- 4:49We have looking at at where we can get better looking at where
- 4:54we can add depth and kind of filling this roster out that was
- 4:58left decimated. The last two to three years of
- 5:01the Fuente era as true. And that's, and that's really
- 5:04where it is. And we're seeing as the season
- 5:06has progressed. We're seeing where the holes
- 5:09are. But we're also seeing again, you
- 5:12talk about the conservative approach, but we're also seeing
- 5:16where we're developing right? You know, you're seeing a
- 5:18Daquan, right? And they willing Loft and I know
- 5:20a lot of people were feeling like Lofton was going to be a
- 5:221,000-yard receiver but still from a guy who only had seven
- 5:26catches last year he's stepping up.
- 5:29Hey Kwon, right? Stepping up.
- 5:31So I get the approach because again if this is a five to six
- 5:36year thing which a lot of people Will our go like to hear that.
- 5:39But in reality, you know, if you're building it the right
- 5:43way, it is going to take longer. But it's a lot easier to fill
- 5:47holes. Right?
- 5:48Because you know like right now man's my back in.
- 5:52I don't think you know if we take something in the back end
- 5:55it's going to be more depth than anything.
- 5:57It's going to be death, mate, media starting safety or
- 6:00rotational caliber safety, but I think in terms of the young
- 6:04death combined, with what we're bringing in, in the the Current
- 6:08class. We're kind of set at the
- 6:10quarterback position. Yeah, seeing what we got with
- 6:13d'Alene seen what we've got with Cam Johnson already, get a
- 6:17healthy Dorian, strong Coming Back, DJ Harvey.
- 6:21You know, that that's for right there that we're seeing some
- 6:23heavy playing time and that are have shown the capability to be
- 6:27at that type of player for this team.
- 6:29So you already got four and that's before you start adding
- 6:32in some younger guys and some of the development on the backend
- 6:35of guys that are already on the roster.
- 6:37All right. So let's start.
- 6:39We said our ballpark numbers 10 to 12.
- 6:42We're going to look at 12:00 tonight.
- 6:44Brian is saying, we can go up to 15 and you know you guys be
- 6:49liberal or conservative as you want as you fill in the spots.
- 6:52But let's look on offense because obviously that's where
- 6:54we're feeling the higher number. We're saying of our 12 we're
- 6:57saying seven on offense now even though there has been some steps
- 7:03taken in the wide receiver room, Prime being you kind of came to
- 7:09the conclusion, we have to have it at least two from the portal
- 7:12to help with depth and we really need.
- 7:14And I know Caleb Smith is eligible next year the covid
- 7:18year because the way it all works out, he has one more year
- 7:20of Eligibility, but if he decides to leave and even if he
- 7:25doesn't decide to leave one of those two has to be a starter
- 7:29has to be. Absolutely.
- 7:32Absolutely one has to be a starter and to his kind of the
- 7:36minimum. That's definitely Up and off
- 7:37point. I feel like we could be really
- 7:39aggressive here because I think bringing in bodies you're going
- 7:43to get a decent amount of run in the in Spring, you're going to
- 7:48get a decent amount of Run next year.
- 7:50You'll at least see what you got.
- 7:51Everybody's going to get a shot, if you're bringing in three,
- 7:55especially if Caleb Smith in ends up moving on.
- 7:58So, I would be very aggressive at that position this offseason
- 8:03in terms of the transfer portal. But what would you be looking
- 8:06for? Like to me, I look at Dwayne
- 8:10Lofton and he's a slot obviously.
- 8:12Jaden Blues gone after this year, you know?
- 8:16Is it a? Why is that what we in starting?
- 8:19Is it a why? I mean, I think the big thing is
- 8:24you're going to look To get a playmaker guy that can be a true
- 8:29one. So, yeah, I think you're looking
- 8:30more for like an X Caliber receiver and then you let Caleb
- 8:35Smith kind of be that number two, if he returns and if not,
- 8:38you love for a guy like Jalen Jones, their Christian Moss to
- 8:41kind of step into that role next year.
- 8:44All right? So there's that.
- 8:46Why? That we're looking to maybe
- 8:47three there. Now, the next one, obviously,
- 8:51Brian. This is the one where you feel
- 8:53like we have to go attack already.
- 8:55And that's offensive line Brian. We we kind of came to the
- 9:00conclusion, three offensive lineman regardless to starting
- 9:04caliber and just so happens just to couple weeks ago, a guy who
- 9:11had started at numerous positions.
- 9:14For Wisconsin entered the portal, he was a big-time
- 9:19recruit coming out for Wisconsin, when they came and
- 9:21he's played, was it left guard, right Garden, right?
- 9:24Tackle. And, you know, obviously, like
- 9:28the writing's on the wall, right?
- 9:30He comes in. He I don't know what happened
- 9:32this year. I don't follow us constant close
- 9:35enough, but clearly four games in, he's He's leaving something
- 9:40happened, something went down something, but I don't from the
- 9:45sounds of it, it's not something that would be a deal.
- 9:47Breaking situation with another team or I we would have heard I
- 9:52think a lot more about it at this point.
- 9:55That's just my opinion. Now, where are you primarily?
- 10:02Looking obviously with not seen Xavier.
- 10:04Chaplain this year, is someone like the guy from Wisconsin.
- 10:08I mean, is it going to be left tackle, right, tackle Center.
- 10:15We needed, we need at least one tackle and we need at least a
- 10:18center in my opinion. If we end up getting probably,
- 10:24I'd like to get a swing guy. So if we look at the you know
- 10:27the kitchen Constant, that will be a great guard, guard tackle,
- 10:31combo, you wherever you need to feed Min fit him in.
- 10:35Get a true tackle and then whether it's Frontline or depth
- 10:41and then you get a potential starting caliber Center that can
- 10:46push with looks like Jack hollifield for that starting job
- 10:50next year, you know, I haven't seen enough of him outside of
- 10:56the spring game to really Determine whether that's
- 10:58something that I'm comfortable with as far as a starting.
- 11:02So I definitely want to try to get a center in the portal as we
- 11:05try to build this line back up and backfill with some of these
- 11:10recruits. Yeah.
- 11:12And that's the piece it's finding starting caliber
- 11:16offensive lineman it's not just fine lime there's gonna be
- 11:19plenty of offensive lineman in the portal.
- 11:21I don't even do that but finding someone to actually be able to
- 11:26play. And that's where, you know, you
- 11:30hate to say it, it's guys, coming off injuries.
- 11:32It's potentially a younger guy who has Shone out and is looking
- 11:37for that starting job, right? Like, and I hate to say it,
- 11:40someone like, you know, I hope it doesn't happen to us.
- 11:43It's someone like Braylon more who we've seen on tape, he can
- 11:46play it, a D1 level. And you have somebody like that
- 11:51that is I'm not going to say enamored but doesn't see that
- 11:57his offensive line coach has put a lot of guys in the NFL and
- 11:59cooked up a lot of guys. yeah, that's that's kind of the big
- 12:04thing, you know, we're We got we got a lot, a lot of holes to
- 12:10fill that that unit right now it's true.
- 12:15A lot of holes and it's a lot of holes in its we were talking
- 12:20just for we came on here. You know talking about Wells
- 12:24talking about kind of the offense in general, but if the
- 12:27offensive line play like the way we saw, it was the way I've seen
- 12:33it in Bryon, you come back to me Silas.
- 12:38Nick Moore and Johnny have played about average maybe
- 12:42Johnny slightly above average. Hansen ceiling isn't that high?
- 12:48So his average is never going to be that.
- 12:50So when he has those bad moments, it's not going to.
- 12:52It's going to go from like, right here, where a lot of guys
- 12:57are out here for way down here and the real one that I think no
- 13:01one can figure out. And maybe Brian, you can call up
- 13:05Robbie. Maybe you can call your, you can
- 13:06call komlin up. Y'all can just sit and analyze
- 13:10Parker Clements because if you told me, Parker took a slight
- 13:14step back this year. You be like we get it.
- 13:18You coach you skiing, it's okay. He's taking a massive step back
- 13:24like he's almost a true freshman again.
- 13:27And from a guy that I think we all expected to be playing to
- 13:31really benefit from a new offensive line coach.
- 13:34Yeah, and the thing that's most disappointing is is past Pro
- 13:38which should translate more or less from scheme to scheme.
- 13:44You know, it's one thing if you you know are changing the
- 13:49emphasis from a primarily Zone, A scheme to a primarily Gap,
- 13:54based scheme and struggle in the running game.
- 13:56It's a completely different thing to, you know, shit the bed
- 14:00in past Pro when you grade it out relatively.
- 14:03Well, In I'd say significant time life.
- 14:07So he wasn't obviously a full-time starter, but he played
- 14:09significant snaps last year and graded out pretty well.
- 14:13And it wasn't just against the scrubs or, you know, when we
- 14:17were getting blown out and when we were blowing anybody out,
- 14:19which we didn't do a whole lot of that last year.
- 14:20Obviously. But you know he played
- 14:24significant snaps against pretty solid competition last year.
- 14:28There's no reason that especially in pass Pro that he
- 14:31we should see this significant of a drop-off in his So I'm not
- 14:36sure exactly what's going on there.
- 14:38Whether he's in his head or just you know a little bit more
- 14:42pressure is kind of put him in a spot where he's not performing
- 14:45as well. I'm not sure but it definitely
- 14:49has not been a good season for him so far.
- 14:53Definitely not the season. He wanted definitely not season.
- 14:55We kind of were thinking we were going to get from him not at
- 14:58all. All right?
- 15:00Obviously the next one through seven games this year It's
- 15:06quarterback. And, you know, we said our
- 15:09stuff, it's got to be a guy who can start in, even though we've
- 15:14seen Grant Wells have really good moments.
- 15:18It's been some bad ones too. And it's been some inconsistent
- 15:20and they far outweigh the good moments we've seen.
- 15:23Now, Brian, let me ask your opinion of this.
- 15:27Could you potentially take this off the table of over the next
- 15:30five games? He elevates his play, or you
- 15:33still You want a competition in the spring?
- 15:39I want somebody to push him, okay?
- 15:42Because I think we're at a point where we, we know that the, the
- 15:50floor, you know, where the floor is for.
- 15:52We're not sure, we're not sure where the ceiling is.
- 15:56And I think if we can get mostly kind of that upper middle of his
- 16:03play, okay? And we put and we put some more
- 16:06Talent around him. We might be able to do a little
- 16:08bit of the things we want to do, okay?
- 16:11So but I still want to see if he can get Whether that helps him
- 16:16or that helps his growth where whether he gets better as a
- 16:20result of that. And we see a higher level of
- 16:23play with him in the offseason heading into next year.
- 16:28Or whether, you know, somebody we find in the portal can come
- 16:31in here and take that job and run with it.
- 16:34And we, you know, we're in a, you know, Jerrod Evan situation
- 16:38where, you know, we're one quarterback away from putting
- 16:41some other pieces together, not saying we're going to go on.
- 16:44around and went and games or anything like that, but more
- 16:47saying A play elevating quarterback, which I don't think
- 16:53right now. Wells is the guy that can
- 16:55Elevate the play of those around him.
- 16:57He kind of, he is what he is. He's got a great arm in terms of
- 17:02velocity and being able to get drive it down the field.
- 17:07But there's there's things in there where it he doesn't make
- 17:09the people around him necessarily better.
- 17:12So we're going to have to improve around him and we can
- 17:15potentially, you know, upgrade that position in the process.
- 17:19Where are they? I now with that being said,
- 17:24though, Hypothetically. Well though you hypothetical out
- 17:30here? By some miracle of God, the
- 17:35Hokies go 5 and 0 to 4 and 1/2, close out the season.
- 17:39In his play, you know, minimal picks under three picks over 10
- 17:46touchdowns. And when you look at the game,
- 17:49it's better. Do you still do it?
- 17:53Or is that when you say because of what?
- 17:59We've seen from 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, You know what, he
- 18:06showed enough in these last five games.
- 18:08We've got to stick with the next year, if we're going to go
- 18:11portal shopping for quarterback, it's got to be a young
- 18:14developmental guy who can compete with Devon and Taj in
- 18:19might have the tools to unseat Grant or in a year.
- 18:25That's a good question. That's a good giving you a
- 18:27big-ass hypothetical. Yeah.
- 18:29Because I mean I don't know if like scraping into a bowl game
- 18:33is Enough to save that job. Well, that's why I said for and
- 18:3815. And oh yeah, that's some sad but
- 18:40we're still kind of, you know, back ending a bowl here.
- 18:47I don't know because I've seen enough inconsistent play that it
- 18:50would have to be very solid consistent.
- 18:55For the remainder and I'd have to see again, I'm talking about
- 18:59elevator play. Look, I'd like, I need to see
- 19:00him. Elevating the play of others.
- 19:03In those games, you want to hear the names, Christian Moss, Jalen
- 19:07Jones and daewon Lofton having big games with him at the helm.
- 19:12And I like that. We're using his legs more, and
- 19:15he's shown the ability there. I want to see that continue,
- 19:18along with the passing game, taking some steps forward and
- 19:22hopefully that opening up a little bit more in the Run game.
- 19:25Once were Working with loaded boxes all the time and awesome.
- 19:29All right, one more on the offensive side of the ball and
- 19:32we might need to duck Braun when we say this after after empty in
- 19:37the room last chick. But let's be honest, we probably
- 19:43are going to be in need of some sort of rotational depth,
- 19:47running back. Obviously, I think right now
- 19:51we've heard pry kept talking King in Malachi are the 12?
- 19:55King has eligibility next year, clearly Malachi has eligibility.
- 19:59We seen flashes of chance, black, and Bryce Duke Palin.
- 20:03Holsten's graduated, there's a few guys, still on the roster.
- 20:07I think basically what you're saying is, you want some sort of
- 20:11back to compete with price and chance and push them if not beat
- 20:16them out? Yeah, I'd like to see somebody
- 20:18pushing for the third rotation in the running back room.
- 20:25I think we potentially could have had that this year if we
- 20:31had held onto Ramon Brown. So I'm thinking that that type
- 20:35of caliber player. Why good deal?
- 20:39So there's seven will rethink on the portal right now.
- 20:45Roughly Midway through the season is when we kind of came
- 20:47up with this, but when you had the episode like last week we
- 20:50had to put this off a week. All right defensively.
- 20:54I don't think anybody's going to be a shock on the first one, is
- 20:57its defensive line and it's they've got to be to deeps.
- 21:03Right here, at least two of them and that's especially doubly
- 21:07true. If if we if we don't get Pollard
- 21:12and Kendricks back next year, which I think they might be back
- 21:19and it is the interior. I mean garments likely gone this
- 21:22year, the field area, Spain thing.
- 21:26All going to depend on what happens with the NCAA.
- 21:29Let's not hold our breath to are.
- 21:32Definitely don't hold your Don't hold your breath on that and
- 21:36then with McRae and Nelson. But the is it strictly inside
- 21:39for you? Because if garbage gone to me,
- 21:42you need at least one and I'd say, one almost starting caliber
- 21:49defensive in and at least a rotational piece on the
- 21:52defensive line. Yeah.
- 21:54Now I do think with the edge though.
- 21:56I think the way this defense is look this year and kind of for
- 21:59the inside to I think it's an easier sell if you have someone
- 22:03who's putting out good tape, but buried somewhere, You got to
- 22:07start making the phone calls and I'm sure the phone calls are
- 22:10already being made players already, but when garbett goes
- 22:15because garbett is out of Eligibility, right?
- 22:19Yeah. I'm pretty sure you don't want
- 22:22to effort that in a second here. I think so.
- 22:27But you know the again the line play has not been a big step
- 22:31back this year at all, but we mentioned in that.
- 22:35What if Episode if Bono comes back, Harvey had Williams.
- 22:38It would help everybody out a little bit but develop.
- 22:40So we've got a quickly restock that regardless what happened.
- 22:45Now, we could get lucky and Pollard and Kendricks.
- 22:48Both come back and we go out and find a couple good pieces in the
- 22:51portal. That's going to be an
- 22:53interesting room. Next now you've already said
- 22:56this and kind of gave Away. You said kind of second priority
- 23:00was the safety and it's got to be at least somebody who can
- 23:05step into a backup role because, obviously losing tamari this
- 23:08year, you lose your leader back there.
- 23:11Yes, strengthening people's have played great, but now it kind of
- 23:15gets scary who's behind them. Yeah, I think that's the big
- 23:21thing we've seen. I think we at least need
- 23:23somebody that's either potential starting caliber, or at least a
- 23:26rotational player back there to kind of stir things up.
- 23:32And I think it'll help with the development of some of the
- 23:36younger players because we don't have to necessarily throw them
- 23:39out there. They don't have to be chimoree
- 23:41Connor, next year, you know, they can still work into that
- 23:44role of another year if they can get, you know, lean on whether
- 23:49it's a Veteran that has one or two years of Eligibility left or
- 23:52whether it's a, you know, a sophomore that pop that can kind
- 23:55of come in and they can kind of tag team it.
- 24:00Abso-freakin'-lutely their Brawn.
- 24:04And what I really find interesting about that room is
- 24:07it's like, you're you feel so good about who's played back
- 24:11there right now, right? You feel good about it but you
- 24:14know what? That position.
- 24:15That's the position. You get a stinger in your
- 24:17outfit, three games. Yeah, that's the targeting thing
- 24:22and I and when And you know, that's where you worry about
- 24:30that position because, you know, you have to be aggressive even
- 24:32in this scheme, it's even more. So you have to be aggressive.
- 24:36Now, the next piece I think, is one that's going to probably
- 24:40turn to me ears. And that's the linebacker room.
- 24:45I'm still feel good about the linebacker room but I think what
- 24:47we've seen in the last really month is Keller.
- 24:53Lawson a few of the other guys they can play but they're not
- 24:57quite ready. To be the full-time starter
- 25:00shit. Now next all maybe maybe going
- 25:03through a string being with the ones.
- 25:05Yeah but I think with that Brian you're looking for somebody
- 25:08who's probably played significant snaps elsewhere.
- 25:12Yeah I think that's what we would want to look at their
- 25:15particularly at Mike just because I don't think we really
- 25:18know what that position is going to look like.
- 25:21Is that going to be will Johnson next year?
- 25:22Is that going to be Jaden Keller next year?
- 25:27What's Mike gonna look like rolling into 2023?
- 25:33We've kind of been you know we leaned on Dax here the last two
- 25:38years, known quantity, we know what we're getting from him.
- 25:45You know we're kind of going into an area where we don't know
- 25:49what that mic Position will give us and we're still kind of
- 25:53unsettled it will write. I mean, Tisdale played pretty
- 25:56well and The game back. You know we still have some
- 26:01question marks though with that position in terms of depth In
- 26:05terms of who's going to be the guy that stepped up, is that
- 26:07going to be Keller's role. See going to slide over to Mike.
- 26:11Is that going to be McDonald's role?
- 26:14Is it looks like lost in the has settled back into Sam, which I
- 26:18think is a better fit for his skill set.
- 26:22Either primarily being in coverage, or attacking the line
- 26:26of scrimmage and not so much having to kind of read and and
- 26:30focus a lot more on technique there.
- 26:33So I think that's a better. Fit for him.
- 26:35So you know, the question is going to be who kind of emerges
- 26:39there as well. So we got some options there.
- 26:42We got some guys, we've seen a lot of snaps between last year
- 26:46and this year, but we don't really feel settled at either
- 26:50the the mic or the wheel position kind of heading into
- 26:54next year. So I'd like to see somebody at
- 26:56least come in that could potentially start at one of
- 26:59those spots. That would be the ideal
- 27:02situation and so for And lutely. Alright, last one on the
- 27:08defensive side of the ball and I know, Brian, you went through
- 27:11and you talked about Mansoor and cam we mentioned, DJ Harvey the
- 27:15corner. Back room, future looks bright.
- 27:18But, you know, with Dorian strong as well.
- 27:22But once Armani goes in, obviously those guys are gonna
- 27:27be stepping up. You're really gonna be only
- 27:29three deep at the outside. We know they'll try Harvey out
- 27:31there so that kind of we landed on.
- 27:34Need to find at least one outside corner right here.
- 27:37And it doesn't, it doesn't have to be a front front line player.
- 27:39You know, that right now we're looking at strong and Delaney,
- 27:43kind of being the one to heading into next year, with Cam and DJ
- 27:48working in their need, to get a fifth in there to get some extra
- 27:51rotation, some flexibility on the outside.
- 27:53In case you get a guy that goes down like we've seen with with
- 27:57strong this year. You know, you got to kind of
- 28:00have at least, you know, three guys maybe for that.
- 28:04That can, that can line up outside consistently and at
- 28:07least have one or two guys that can play the nickel.
- 28:10Absolutely. So again, it's one of those
- 28:12positions where you feel great about that in safety with the
- 28:16future. But we're not deaf wise there
- 28:19yet. If this was two years from now
- 28:21and those guys were seniors, I think we'd probably feel good
- 28:25because by that time we went through some Cycles, we have
- 28:28more guys in so. But right now looking ahead.
- 28:33It's just the The Depths just not there yet and it's again
- 28:37it's why we're saying 15 plus in the portal Here or you know 12
- 28:41plus in the ball this year she's using?
- 28:43Yeah. All right, but I mean we got
- 28:45some help coming you know? Yeah class that we have.
- 28:49Well there's a there's some pretty decent number of
- 28:51secondary pieces so you know maybe your answers there maybe
- 28:55we don't have to quite go fishing as much of there's a
- 28:57couple guys that you think are going to be you know as a true
- 29:00freshman ready to go especially guys that enroll early but I'd
- 29:04still keep my eyes peeled for those pieces.
- 29:09Lutely Brawn. All right, so let's go over.
- 29:13Take a look at some news and college football notes.
- 29:16And I think for this weekend, really, really cool what's going
- 29:21on College GameDay as they go. Visit Jackson State versus
- 29:24Southern. I love it for the HBCU
- 29:27Community. To get that game.
- 29:28They have done this in the past. I know they've done a couple
- 29:33where it's been like the Showcase games like in Atlanta,
- 29:36but this is actually, you know, at Jackson State on Campus all
- 29:40campus, you know down in Jackson Mississippi obviously Dion's a
- 29:46draw. Don't don't don't get it wrong.
- 29:49But it's kind of cool. Reading some back story in the
- 29:53history of this game and they call it the Boombox classic.
- 29:56And I was like wow that's interesting.
- 29:57Why they call it the Boombox classic?
- 29:59Will you start reading into it? The name of the bands and
- 30:03obviously HBCU culture with the band's, it's unbelievable.
- 30:06If you don't watch, it's every what is it the first Saturday of
- 30:11bowl season? The twelve o'clock game is
- 30:13always that classic. Yeah.
- 30:16And they always devote. You get a little bit the
- 30:19halftime show, but they always devote showing you the ban on
- 30:21the field, which is usually amazing.
- 30:24But the reason it's called the Boombox game is because Jackson
- 30:27State's bands is called the sonic, boom of the South but the
- 30:32southern band is called the human jukebox.
- 30:35Thus the Boombox classic going to be really interested to see
- 30:40if they bring di'anno set. Because obviously now with the
- 30:45struggles might norville's have it at that shoe.
- 30:48Lana with Georgia Tech opening up potentially.
- 30:53Some other schools opening up, his name is going to be on fire.
- 30:57Yep. His name is definitely going to
- 30:59be out there and, you know he's earned it.
- 31:03I mean, he went there, he's attracted some big names and
- 31:08he's got them playing some really damn good football.
- 31:11You know, it's not it's not just hey I brought in, you know, a
- 31:15handful of big names and We're doing I know they're out there
- 31:21making some noise, they really are so he's not just out there.
- 31:25I'm a name attached to this, this position, you know, he's
- 31:30actually out there, you know, coaching those guys up pretty
- 31:32well and good to see. And it's, you know, it's going
- 31:37to be interesting to see where and it's going to be interesting
- 31:39to see that scene Saturday morning when they go live down
- 31:44at Jackson State on game day. All right, Brian.
- 31:49Somebody got fired again this week and it's not from a big
- 31:52program. It is from a significantly
- 31:54smaller program and it's will he lie down.
- 31:57It UNC Charlotte started the season one and seven.
- 32:04Not the greatest record down there.
- 32:06I know it's a program building, but you know, there were
- 32:09Whispers And little notes that hand.
- 32:13They like him a lot. How you feeling that?
- 32:18That you know what's happened? What happened?
- 32:22I feel like we dodged a bullet because we will heal, he's name
- 32:25got thrown out there for a lot of jobs.
- 32:27This offseason and Virginia Tech was one of them and we were very
- 32:33not high on on, will he lie? He was, he was pretty low on our
- 32:40list there. I don't think he made the list.
- 32:43Only think he made the Dark Horse and if he did Go back and
- 32:48look what I do. Not remember talking about, will
- 32:50he lie in our tops? Yeah, I don't think we did.
- 32:54If we did, we it was just kind of like a very low low ranking
- 32:58there. So, yeah, we dodged a bullet and
- 33:02so did a bunch of other folks and you know we see this a lot,
- 33:07right? You know, you get a young coach,
- 33:09he comes in there, they play inspired for a season or two and
- 33:14then all of a sudden the wheels fall off a little bit.
- 33:17We saw it with when take in Blacksburg and we're you know,
- 33:22we're seeing kind of Similar results there in UNC Charlotte.
- 33:26So they were, they were kind of the, one of those Underdog, you
- 33:32know? Look at, look at how they're
- 33:33fighting type teams last year and now that, you know, they're
- 33:37completely in the, in the mud this year.
- 33:39So, Again I think a lot of a lot of high that's all I'd say low
- 33:48to mid power five teams, dodged a bullet on will Healey they're
- 33:55absolutely freaking lutely. All right.
- 33:58So Bryan we actually got a commit pick up in football and
- 34:03wrestling back on October 22nd Jenny, Mullen who is.
- 34:10By all mean goes to st. Joseph Regional plays defensive
- 34:13end for the football team. Is a legitimate legitimate
- 34:20heavyweight wrestler. Yep.
- 34:23Commits basically if you see the Tweet, it's basically saying
- 34:27dual sport athlete committing for 2023 for football and
- 34:32wrestling. I don't know if you had a chance
- 34:37to see any of this tape, Ronnie plays defensive end, he's 63,
- 34:40he's about 225 pounds, getting up to 250 when you're assholes.
- 34:46Can he legitimately do this? Because I mean these Seasons
- 34:50overlap a little bit. That's a great question, man.
- 34:56That's a great question. If the idea is that he's going
- 35:01to be, you know, more or less a Guy that we're looking at on the
- 35:07scout team, he's got to looking at for like really deep death on
- 35:10the on the Travel team than yes sure.
- 35:16It's going to be hard with how much the seasons do overlap and
- 35:20him being very much. A wrestler.
- 35:23First 24. See him, playing a significant
- 35:28role on the football squad but it's definitely something to
- 35:31keep an eye on. Yeah, it is and, you know, a
- 35:35little bit of his tape is up there and the video I'm
- 35:39watching. Jim, I love it.
- 35:40He was playing basically knows kind of shoots the Gap, they're
- 35:45running. Outside swing pass.
- 35:46And he actually got to the running back about 20 yards down
- 35:51field in got enough of a hand on them to force them out of
- 35:53bounds. So obviously, you know, leverage
- 35:58technique stuff like that. When you have a rest or out
- 36:01there you can tell some guys who rents combination of size and
- 36:06speed As usually what you're looking at man that's usually
- 36:12what you're looking at. So probably upside is he
- 36:14probably won't count towards any football scholarship.
- 36:17If he's coming here wrestling and seeing his credentials
- 36:20wrestling or David Cunningham wrote some good stuff on him but
- 36:23you see those credentials it's kind of like yeah, he's
- 36:26definitely a potential world-class wrestler.
- 36:30Yeah. All right, Ryan before we get
- 36:32into our main topic of Know The Enemy NC State.
- 36:35We are going to take a quick pause for a message.
- 36:39Our digital partners. Because we take a quick break.

- 36:58forward slash free Dash website, Dash report.
- 37:01Now back to the episode All right Brian.
- 37:05So let's kick it off here. No the enemy NC State.
- 37:08Let's start with the offense because obviously the biggest
- 37:12story on the offensive side of the ball is just a few weeks
- 37:14ago. Devin Leary starting quarterback
- 37:18preseason. ACC Player of the Year tears a
- 37:20spec tries to go through some rehab and eventually just comes
- 37:25up and says I'm done for the year.
- 37:27So it really has altered the NC State offense significantly.
- 37:32Yeah, that's going to be the big thing to watch is how they
- 37:35adjust around the new quarterback, Jack Chambers and
- 37:40let me let's go ahead and start there.
- 37:44You know, Jack Chambers, he's throwing game is still a work in
- 37:48progress. They in the game against
- 37:51Syracuse. He had a lot of kind of quick
- 37:54read, one read Concepts. There wasn't a whole lot of
- 37:59reading the defense. It was very much.
- 38:02Get the ball out of your hands. Quick, is this guy open.
- 38:05Okay, take off and run and that's where his asset.
- 38:11He's really an asset for the team is great athleticism.
- 38:16A lot of design runs that were put in place for him.
- 38:19QB Powers, QB draws some sweeps, had a lot of success in the
- 38:26short stuff, in terms of throwing the ball, but really
- 38:30great when he Had to improvise. So when that first read wasn't
- 38:34there, he was kind of going to scramble mode, but he would
- 38:37occasionally get himself into trouble in that.
- 38:39So, he had somewhere. He curfew got the first down,
- 38:42but he had somewhere. He tried to bail too quick and
- 38:46got dropped for a sec, because he put himself in a bad spot
- 38:49there. Yeah, and he really hasn't
- 38:52established me chemistry or timing in the zone read game
- 38:55either. So we saw mesh Point some
- 39:00problems there. Some bad decisions at the mesh
- 39:03point. So that's something else that we
- 39:05could probably take advantage of.
- 39:07And we're not looking at a guy that's going to press the ball.
- 39:10Downfield, consistently as though he will take a few shots
- 39:12here and there to kind of keep the defense honest.
- 39:15Yep. And with Chambers, I mean, he's
- 39:17not a big guy tall, 510 180, he, you know, originally coming out
- 39:23of high school, he committed to Charleston, Southern and he was
- 39:26a starter there for three years. So when n c-- State brought a
- 39:30minute, Lisa was a guy. They knew had played at the FCS
- 39:33level. We're being down there for three
- 39:36seasons as a starter. You know, he threw thirty eight
- 39:39touchdowns, he had 27 picks but you know, he also rushed for 14
- 39:45touchdowns over 1,000 yards in the three seasons as a starter.
- 39:50You know, best season. Passing wise was 2020, he was a
- 39:5463%, the other two seasons under 60% and his high Seasons 2,500
- 40:00yards. So, Contain, it's like that
- 40:05right contain contain contain because he's not going to kill
- 40:08you with his arm but obviously they're running attack.
- 40:12Brian. You know with him being there
- 40:16now versus Leary it does open that up a little bit more and
- 40:19let's talk about a couple of those running backs.
- 40:22Let's talk about Jordan Houston. The sty foot 10 192 pound
- 40:30running back. In Jordan out of Oakton.
- 40:34Virginia went to private Flint, Hills High School up in Northern
- 40:37Virginia, a composite 3 star out of Virginia.
- 40:43He was a top, 20 Virginia player.
- 40:45Back in 2019 it did say the Hokies did report an offer.
- 40:52I don't know how much that is. It's always when you see an
- 40:55offer, it's an offer, but what a 19?
- 40:59I mean, that was, you know, that was one of the only willing, I
- 41:03think to in that class, not three the next year for the next
- 41:05year, whatever the fuck, what the hell is when we were just
- 41:08jacking things up and you know, so far this year, you know, as
- 41:13the primary starter, you know, 300 yards on the ground Aven?
- 41:17Right at for Carrie, no touchdowns on the ground.
- 41:21But obviously Brian, I'm sure in that tape on you saw a little
- 41:24bit of that passing game because he does, he isn't it, has that
- 41:29element there and he's had that element since he stepped on
- 41:31campus and point? Yeah, I mean he's kind of a one
- 41:34cut and go back in terms of the running game, he's got a pretty
- 41:37good Vision between the tackles, but he's not really that home
- 41:40run threat in the Run game and he's not pushing the pile or
- 41:43anything like that. He's not that like Dynamic short
- 41:46yardage back but where he makes his hey is in the passing game
- 41:49in all areas and he's dangerous in the open field in the passing
- 41:54game. So that's one thing that we're
- 41:57going to keep bottled up. Is that they're going to get him
- 42:00the ball quickly in space. Especially with Chambers out
- 42:04there. So I got to be able to get him
- 42:06down to the ground pretty quick. Well it's interesting to see
- 42:10here because I mean, the passing game stats, I mean it backs up
- 42:14what you say there. I mean he's averaging 12 a catch
- 42:17but he only has one total touchdown all around.
- 42:19And you know, I'm wondering without the threat of leary
- 42:26there. When you looked at Syracuse,
- 42:30where they still trying to get him out, With the rivet with the
- 42:34passing game, they were getting them out, not quite as much, but
- 42:38I think they were definitely still trying to get him out as
- 42:43consistently as they could. He was definitely very, I won't
- 42:48say heavily used but they definitely kept him as a big
- 42:51part of their game plan, right? But obviously, you take Leary
- 42:54out. It it doesn't worry as much,
- 42:57right? It doesn't worry as much as I,
- 43:00okay, you're going to take your best running back in.
- 43:02Yes, he is. Good pass catcher, and you're
- 43:04going to take him away from putting the ball in his hands
- 43:07immediately. I take that all day knowing ya
- 43:11hangers and obviously, is completion percentage and
- 43:14everything like that. Yeah, what they're not doing a
- 43:16lot of is like going empty and like lining him up as a true
- 43:20wide out and letting him kind of operate out there.
- 43:22They didn't do that very much against Syracuse with which they
- 43:25did. Do that a lot more.
- 43:27When Leary was in there. Yeah.
- 43:30Now they do have a second running back Brian.
- 43:32And that's I know I'm going to butcher this, so if you got the
- 43:36pronunciation guide somewhere, bring it up for me and that's to
- 43:39be Su Mo Cong Cong Bay six foot 210-pound from willing Borough
- 43:47New Jersey running back. I got you you got it you pulling
- 43:51it up here D me Sue my carne Bay a car May okay interesting
- 43:58interesting. Well anyway class of 2020 one
- 44:01composite 86 3, star with 24/7, top 25 players in New Jersey,
- 44:09another good State, you can top 25 players from usually, there's
- 44:12a chance, they can turn out to be something.
- 44:16I know he did not play against Syracuse, so it will be
- 44:19interesting to see if he goes against the Hokies.
- 44:22But you know, in his redshirt freshman year, solid numbers
- 44:26across the board, you know, 5.8 of Carry Three touchdowns.
- 44:30They're using a little bit in the passing game.
- 44:32I'm with about 12 receptions, what's the tape showing as him
- 44:37compared to Houston? Yeah.
- 44:40He's a little bit more of their, their kind of perimeter running
- 44:42back the guy that they use to kind of attack the perimeter of
- 44:45the running game. He also does a really great job
- 44:48of like cutting back on those Zone plays especially inside
- 44:51Zone. A lot of times when he cuts back
- 44:54across the defense that creates a big crease, he can get up in
- 44:57there and make some some big runs that way, it's also a good
- 45:00lead Blocker in the in the past Pro and quarterback lead game.
- 45:05So if he's back in this game that might be a little bit more
- 45:07effective than we saw against Syracuse.
- 45:10And he is also used in the passing game, but those are more
- 45:14like check downs and screens versus the dynamic threat that
- 45:18we get from from Houston. Interesting.
- 45:23Interesting there on. Who worries you more?
- 45:30Houston. Just because of what he can do
- 45:33in both areas, the run in the past.
- 45:37I'm not so much worried about what with Demi can do in the
- 45:40passing game. He's more of a just a check down
- 45:43guy. If we can keep him bottled up
- 45:44between the tackles, I think we're good to go there.
- 45:47I'm using, is the guy that can can bother me there?
- 45:50All right, let's hope they continue to save him Robbie.
- 45:54Michael Allen. I'd have to go back and look on
- 45:56the board because I don't, you know, I don't see him registered
- 45:59in the stats here and obviously, burnt Ryan, I'm assuming looking
- 46:02at the tape, he didn't jump there if he played any.
- 46:05So let's hope they keep him bottled up for the rest of the.
- 46:09Yeah, we don't even see him this week.
- 46:10Yeah, we don't, we don't there's four games for them after that.
- 46:13Look, if they're going to work your man, let's hope they saving
- 46:16for those last four. Exactly.
- 46:18All right, let's take a look at one of the wide receivers and
- 46:21that's key on the Seine, Six asumi, 511, 190 pounds from
- 46:26Lumberton, North Carolina and seeing the First full game that
- 46:30Chambers played of the receivers.
- 46:33He did get good amount of targets with four receptions and
- 46:3639 yards from in the longest 16 Season wide.
- 46:41Just 20 receptions. He did have quite a few against
- 46:44Clemson just six or 37 but obviously he was part of that
- 46:51game. So yeah.
- 46:55And he's a guy that he's got good hands.
- 46:57He's like kind of a shitty Target but he's more of a stick
- 47:01mover than he is a playmaker. You're not going to see any big
- 47:03plays down the field with him very often more.
- 47:07The curls, quick out screens, some shallow, crossers,
- 47:12occasionally you'll see him, run a corner route.
- 47:15That's kind of the, the big, the big big routes.
- 47:19You'll see him run in this offense. and they will
- 47:23occasionally take a shot with him between the hashes but
- 47:27they're not, he's not a guy that's going to just line up
- 47:29outside and run past a cornerback All right, so let me
- 47:35ask this Braun and you've been watching the tape.
- 47:39Obviously, Thayer Thomas was their big wide receiver, right?
- 47:43Yep. How much?
- 47:48I mean, I don't want to say it's he just completely.
- 47:50I mean, when you saw number, when you saw number five, when
- 47:55you watch the Syracuse tape in the game, I mean, is it just
- 47:59Chambers just can't get it to him?
- 48:05It was a little bit of that I think just because of the the
- 48:07skillset and because of the way Syracuse was playing them.
- 48:12Okay. I didn't really have a whole lot
- 48:14of opportunities to operate the way he normally does and it
- 48:17definitely goes away from from chamber strength, what they are
- 48:21Thomas does well, so it's kind of a little bit of an oil and
- 48:25vinegar situation there. We got to make sure we don't
- 48:28give him opportunities where Chambers can get an easy throw
- 48:31to him though. Yep.
- 48:33Because he definitely can bust their guns.
- 48:34He does have a long catch this year of 75 yards.
- 48:39All right Brian let's do real quick here.
- 48:40Let's jump on the scheme here scheme is Tim Beck.
- 48:44Tim back who came from Texas where he was a josi from 2017 to
- 48:492019. He's been at NC State now since
- 48:522021 step back, do kind of that Smash Mouth spread our po game.
- 49:01Lots of E 1 and 12 Personnel, lots of motion and shifts and
- 49:08kind of window dressing, you'll see a lot of jet motion, bubble
- 49:12motion orbit motion. They're gonna throw a little bit
- 49:14everything, try to get the defense misaligned and out
- 49:18leveraged, you'll see a lot of screens and quick throws to the
- 49:22perimeter to get guys in space and they are selective with deep
- 49:26shots down the field and especially now with Leary out
- 49:29much more selective at least in the We have so far of what
- 49:34Chambers likes to do down the field.
- 49:37Let me ask this. I mean do you think he's
- 49:41purposely going to play a very controlled game?
- 49:44Not take risks against the to and 50p team.
- 49:47Yeah and I think what we're about to talk about is the
- 49:50reason why he's going to do that.
- 49:52All right, let's flip it over. Let's talk about the defensive
- 49:55side of the ball and let's jump out straight up.
- 49:58And let's talk about Drake Thomas, because we're talking
- 50:01about three linebackers tonight. Y'all know normally will mix it
- 50:04up. safety DB, all three of the boundary line backers because
- 50:12they all three, they're all leading the team in tackling and
- 50:16legitimately they've accounted for as a group this year, 132
- 50:24tackles In seven games, they are a dynamic unit.
- 50:32But let's talk about Drake, Thomas, first Drake, Thomas
- 50:35linebacker six-foot-two, 30 Wake Forest, North Carolina.
- 50:38When he came out, he was a composite three-star, back in
- 50:43the class of 2019, a top-25 inside linebacker.
- 50:50You know, had looks from Alabama, had looks from Clemson
- 50:54and So he got some looks from a lot of different schools.
- 51:00Text took a look at it. I mean, obviously you go look at
- 51:03it. Charlie Wilds, who used to do
- 51:05North Carolina and Bud was a secondary.
- 51:08So obviously, if he called those two guys eyes, it said
- 51:12something. So what's the tape sale?
- 51:16Tape says that he's a damn good outside.
- 51:18Linebacker plays really fast likes to penetrate and jump in
- 51:24the rushing Lanes attacks and pursues along the edge very
- 51:28well. The only really weakness in his
- 51:31game is that you know you can't get him to over pursue or get
- 51:35fooled with window dressing. So if we're able to do anything
- 51:37with the misdirection, we might be able to get him out of
- 51:40position there but you know when he gets a good read and uses his
- 51:44technique he is as disruptive. To visit any player you'll see
- 51:48now. And I said the whole unit, he's
- 51:50leading the team 50 tackles three pass deflected.
- 51:54Now Brian would there because we're going to talk about the
- 51:56other side outside linebacker next here.
- 52:00Are there, is there a field side outside linebacker in the
- 52:02boundary side or is it ones on the left?
- 52:06Ones on the right? And that's where they stay.
- 52:09They kind of mix it up sometimes.
- 52:11Usually it's they're going strong and weak but sometimes
- 52:16they'll go go, go fielded boundary.
- 52:18If there is a if they go Tempo throw off its goes Tempo.
- 52:22Okay, so there is no way to say Drake's, always going to be on
- 52:27the boundary side. Tom Wilson, who are going to
- 52:29talk. Up.
- 52:30Next here is always going to be on the field.
- 52:31So to watch number 32 and 11 see where they're lining up.
- 52:37Every time because you can't guarantee we're going to be.
- 52:40It's yeah, it's not, it's not a true key.
- 52:44They primarily you'll get C Wilson planning to the strong
- 52:51side, okay? But like I said, depending on if
- 52:55the offense goes Tempo or not, that could switch up.
- 52:57All right, well, let's talk about it.
- 52:58Let's talk about Peyton Wilson, the other linebacker 64, 230
- 53:03pounds out of Hillsboro, North Carolina came out.
- 53:07The class of 2018 and he was a stud.
- 53:13I mean, a stud in every sense he was a four-star, 24/7.
- 53:19Had him as a 97, he was a top 40 player, he was top for outside
- 53:24linebacker in the country. He was the number four player in
- 53:27North Carolina. And if you take a look at his
- 53:29offer list, it's all the big names.
- 53:31There's Alabama, There's Clemson, there's Florida State,
- 53:34there's Georgia, there's Penn State. we did make the offer
- 53:39back, way back in 2018, and this season so far, I mean, 42, total
- 53:47tackles What's the tape showing because, you know, obviously a
- 53:52lot of accolades are from the recruiting services and, you
- 53:55know, in last year didn't play. I think he got hurt last year,
- 54:01but 2020 108 tackles yep. And I mean really good house.
- 54:07Another good really good outside linebacker really Elite Pursuit
- 54:10skills, he's really strong at the point of attack but it wrong
- 54:13Army, the puller, keeping good leverage in the gap.
- 54:19Good open field tackle. ER if there's a weakness in his
- 54:22game is that if you can get on him he's not great at shedding
- 54:26blocks but if he's shooting gaps and you know, playing playing
- 54:32with with leverage, it's hard. It's hard to keep him off the
- 54:35ball. The ball carrier there.
- 54:37All right, so there's two really good linebackers.
- 54:41Let's just talk about the third linebacker.
- 54:43Let's talk about Isaiah more, the six-foot-two 232 pounds.
- 54:49This is gonna hurt everybody. When I say this, he's from
- 54:52Chester Virginia, Ouch class of 2017.
- 55:00He was a high Three Star by 24/7 for 789 number 12, player in the
- 55:06state top 20 outside linebacker in the country plated LC Bird
- 55:13and five years ago LC Bird was still one of the dogs here in
- 55:19Richmond. They don't say completely fell
- 55:21off but with the rise of Highland Springs VA Piranha
- 55:24returning, they're not as big as they used to be.
- 55:28We did not offer, but he was not as highly recruited coming out
- 55:33by some people. Only a few offers here and there
- 55:37but he's making people pay for that and NC State took the right
- 55:41angle you know 40 total tackles this year, he does have a sack.
- 55:46And what's the tape showing on mr.
- 55:50Moore. Yeah.
- 55:52He's there Mike, he's often matched up in coverage on the
- 55:56inside. Most tied in when in man
- 56:00coverage, he's really good at sheddings and shedding blocks,
- 56:04really good at working through the trash, to get to his spot
- 56:08and make plays in The Run game. The only real weakness in his
- 56:13game is that he will occasionally missed tackles in
- 56:15the open area. So if Get him in space, you kind
- 56:18of you kind of put him at a disadvantage but if he's working
- 56:21inside that traffic and you don't have a big Lane to kind of
- 56:25maneuver, he's on, get you down. All right, let me be very Frank
- 56:34with you Braun of these three linebackers who has the
- 56:38potential to do the most damage. Thursday night, I'm going to say
- 56:46Dreher Thomas just because of how his quickness, okay?
- 56:53I think stronger. I think his quickness is going
- 56:56to be could be a Difference Maker for us.
- 56:59All right. All right.
- 57:01So we talked about three linebackers because obviously
- 57:04sometimes when you have that good of a unit you just need to
- 57:08discuss them and I know, Brian. I kind of left the last one
- 57:12opened up for you and you shot me and said you want to talk
- 57:15about Josh Harris and it's funny.
- 57:17Josh Harris, six-foot-four 325. He is from Roxboro, North
- 57:24Carolina. So for Robbie who's listening
- 57:27out there in any of our other friends Mal effects County?
- 57:30It's been was a class of 2019. He played for person.
- 57:33Hi Brian School. You were very familiar with in
- 57:36your four years of playing football for Halla.
- 57:39Fortunately, I'm 40 year class of 2019 and a pretty big-time
- 57:44recruit. It's why you continue to go do
- 57:47these smaller parts of your state to recruit because guys
- 57:50like Josh Harris come out, he was a four-star top 25 defensive
- 57:56tackle in the country top 250 player in the composite top 15,
- 58:01the state of Carolina when he came out and and he was
- 58:04recruited. You see the name Alabama?
- 58:07You see Clemson Wisconsin came down and made offer am Tennessee
- 58:13of how the state. So highly recruited.
- 58:15Got a little person County and even though his numbers aren't
- 58:18big Braun, I think we see that sighs.
- 58:22I think We probably know where you're about to go with what he
- 58:25does. Well, you know, when we talk
- 58:28about the 33, you talk about the guy in the middle being the guy
- 58:33that helps the three guys that I just mentioned, eat all night
- 58:38and that's what he does. He's a space heater.
- 58:41He does a really good job of occupying blockers.
- 58:44He regularly re-establishes the line of scrimmage.
- 58:49And that's big for the type of player in this system.
- 58:54He underrated as a pass rusher, he's a really good.
- 58:59Push Pull in a bull rush and he uses those pretty regularly and
- 59:04he's able to get some some quick penetration on the quarterback.
- 59:07The only thing I'll say about him is motor could be a little
- 59:09better and that might come with a, you know, another year to
- 59:13conditioning in the program. But yeah, definitely Dynamic
- 59:17player for his size and now I'm going back through that message
- 59:22real quick. Even though this is a long time
- 59:25ago, he actually did go to Halifax County Schools until the
- 59:30sixth grade, so he would, I guess he would have not played
- 59:34middle school ball, right? Middle School still six, seven
- 59:36eight. Yeah.
- 59:38He just missed it, just missed it.
- 59:40Just miss being a lion just miss being a lion playing for the
- 59:44team. All right, well, Brian, let's
- 59:46flip it. We obviously are super familiar
- 59:48with this defensive system with Tony Gibson.
- 59:53But let's just talk about a little bit more.
- 59:55Let's talk about that 335 stagnant, Tony runs.
- 59:59Yeah it's a 335 it does a good job of confusing.
- 1:00:04The blocking schemes with you know some unbalanced and
- 1:00:08shifting that can get them confused at times.
- 1:00:11They don't bring a lot of heavy pressure usually three down.
- 1:00:14Plus 1 is what they bring in terms of rushing the passer so
- 1:00:20they will Blitz occasionally but that's not something that Do
- 1:00:23very often, it's kind of where it's coming from.
- 1:00:26You don't really know where it's coming from, and that's where it
- 1:00:29kind of creates that confusion across the offensive line.
- 1:00:32They get consistent pressure by bringing just those four, but
- 1:00:36it's one of those again. If you can get get the Run going
- 1:00:40against them, they become vulnerable because they're not
- 1:00:42very great in the back end, which we didn't talk about
- 1:00:44anyone on the back end. And for a pretty pretty decent
- 1:00:47reason they're there. They're not bad but there's
- 1:00:50nothing outstanding. They're really kind of jumps off
- 1:00:54the screen. Alright, so there it is.
- 1:00:57No the enemy. So remember those names?
- 1:01:01Remember some of those things. We're talking about the scheme.
- 1:01:05All right, Brian. Let's go over to the Hokies keys
- 1:01:08and I know I was I told you I won't line is going to be what I
- 1:01:12said, the rest of the friggin year until we start doing it,
- 1:01:14but let's be straight up. It's going to be how good can we
- 1:01:18run the ball on Thursday night? They're decent.
- 1:01:23No, they're decent team against the run, you know, they're
- 1:01:26essentially top there. 36 in the country.
- 1:01:29They average right at 4.3, carry the given up, just over 120
- 1:01:32yards, a game. But and I don't, it's really
- 1:01:37weird. You see this?
- 1:01:38But Devon Larry goes down. And yes, they play.
- 1:01:42Jordan Travis at FSU, a very mobile quarterback, and then
- 1:01:45they played Syracuse with one week to prepare.
- 1:01:48But the last two games, this defense is uncharacteristically
- 1:01:51giving up six and a half per carry.
- 1:01:55Now. It's I'm trying to suffice that.
- 1:02:03Yeah I mean I think the big thing is that If we can get and
- 1:02:08we seen it because you get, you've had back-to-back weeks
- 1:02:10where you got a quarterback, that is either very mobile.
- 1:02:13Or highly mobile Schrader has good Mobility.
- 1:02:17You know, we saw with FSU. What happened there, if we can
- 1:02:21run the ball as effectively as we did with Wells that are last
- 1:02:29game, I think that's, that's something that we can look at.
- 1:02:32That's something we can build on and that'll that'll open up.
- 1:02:36More things for the running backs as well.
- 1:02:38So if we can get, I'm not saying we need to get that
- 1:02:40six-and-a-half carry that we've seen that be great.
- 1:02:44Yeah, that'd be great. Then the great.
- 1:02:47But if we can get, you know, a shade above that average and
- 1:02:51that, you know, 135 1 to 150 range as a team and somewhere
- 1:02:57around four four-and-a-half, carry 1/2, I'll go four and a
- 1:03:01half. Okay, well, let me ask you this
- 1:03:04because I think we could lower because I think them Susan.
- 1:03:06Leary. I mean do you think if we run
- 1:03:11the ball 40 times and get go three and a half of carry
- 1:03:14without lyrics and I'm suppressing this because they
- 1:03:17don't lose a good enough quarterback against a team like
- 1:03:22we're built this year. He could potentially beat us,
- 1:03:25right? Yeah, he could have a game where
- 1:03:27he beats us, not the rest of the team.
- 1:03:31So, I say 35 times, would you take three and a half of Carrie?
- 1:03:35And that would put us at what about 120.
- 1:03:39I'm gonna throw you a caveat there, okay?
- 1:03:41Because not all three and a half per carries.
- 1:03:44Are built the same right through.
- 1:03:47So if we're talking more boom or bust up say no, that would not
- 1:03:51suffice. If we're talking consistently
- 1:03:54since is in is consistently not just on the whole getting 3.5
- 1:03:59but if we're consistently, getting 3 to 4 yards, every time
- 1:04:02we rush the ball then. Yes.
- 1:04:05If we're having a gain of 20 and then we got back to Baghdad -
- 1:04:09want to then no, no. We're that's not, that's it
- 1:04:13done. I like that caveat and that's
- 1:04:17the caveat. I want to see because if you're
- 1:04:19telling me we're averaging three and a half and if our long all
- 1:04:23nights 12, but we're still averaging three and a half.
- 1:04:27That means they're not getting in the backfield.
- 1:04:29That means we're getting line of scrimmage or those one or two
- 1:04:33yard games Every Time We Touch them over.
- 1:04:35Moving forward consistent because to your point, what
- 1:04:39scares the hell out of you saying me saying
- 1:04:42three-and-a-half is well what if Keshawn catches just catches the
- 1:04:46crease? Like we've seen a couple of
- 1:04:48times and go 65 yards. That means the other 29 carries
- 1:04:52a gonna be about what 1.5. Okay, I don't guesses.
- 1:04:56So yeah I mean I'll say I'll take a touchdown in two field
- 1:05:02goals over that, one long touchdown.
- 1:05:05Long as we're continuously. Yeah, if because if we
- 1:05:08consistently moving the football, then we're
- 1:05:10consistently getting into scoring range and putting some
- 1:05:13points on the board. And without Leary, some points
- 1:05:18is going to keep us in this game.
- 1:05:22That's I mean it's big because it's one of those games because
- 1:05:26it's Chambers, I do think Tim I think Beck's going to play close
- 1:05:30to the vest. I think he knows he has a good
- 1:05:32defense on the other side. I think doors going to play
- 1:05:34close to the vest because what he does it need is Jack
- 1:05:37Chambers. Going out there and throwing a
- 1:05:38pick six or taking points off the board, right?
- 1:05:42He does he doesn't want to end up in a similar situation that
- 1:05:47we put BC in early in that game. Where, you know, they have some
- 1:05:53things that they can do well but they're having to play catch-up
- 1:05:58the whole time. Makes.
- 1:06:01And I'm not saying that, I obviously, they don't have a an
- 1:06:04offensive line as awful as Boston College has, at least,
- 1:06:08especially as they were when we played them, they've they're a
- 1:06:12little bit improved since then, but at the same time, you never
- 1:06:17liked to play from behind two scores.
- 1:06:21So now, if I don't think they're going to come out aggressive in
- 1:06:25this game, At least on the offensive side, got it.
- 1:06:31Well, let's flip it down. Let's talk about the Hokies run
- 1:06:33defense because I think I think Chambers out there that always
- 1:06:38worries you as a running quarterback because it feels
- 1:06:40like it's just been our Achilles heel for years upon years now.
- 1:06:43But just in general, you know, they have two solid running
- 1:06:46backs who can make gains and they're coming off plan to good
- 1:06:51defense has especially to good. Run defense, has you know
- 1:06:54Florida State's 22nd in the country Syracuse?
- 1:06:58Is, you know, get their rank here.
- 1:07:01I had it up a second ago. I went away.
- 1:07:03Syracuse 44th in the country so they did not play.
- 1:07:10Excuse me on that. Braun, I had the wrong data
- 1:07:13point up here. Give me one moment, but we know
- 1:07:16Syracuse has a good defense. We've seen that all year.
- 1:07:19Syracuse has a very good defense overall in, you know, 39th
- 1:07:26against the Run Florida. Estate not as good against the
- 1:07:30run, but when you watch those two games and just kind of watch
- 1:07:37the rain attack, How big is it? Like if because if you say, you
- 1:07:43say, we get three if we give up 3.7 a carry to them.
- 1:07:48Well, first of all, the games going to be ugly, anyway, it's
- 1:07:50going to be really ugly they go 3.7 and Carrie.
- 1:07:56Yeah, if they go 3.7 to carry then it gets really ugly because
- 1:08:01and in that in that situation, I mean we're kind of on equal
- 1:08:05footing there because if they're struggling to run the ball,
- 1:08:09they're having to put Chambers in a situation.
- 1:08:12He's not great in. I'd probably take on the whole
- 1:08:18what wells can do over. What Chambers can do really?
- 1:08:23It's just just narrowly because I think Wells can make a couple
- 1:08:29throws down the field at a better clip than what Chambers
- 1:08:33can Chambers might nickel and dime you he might throw you
- 1:08:36quick outs screens. Little flares to the running
- 1:08:40back and wide receiver things that can kind of get you some,
- 1:08:43maybe some yards after the catch, but he's not going to
- 1:08:46attack you downfield, consistently.
- 1:08:48Okay, that's something we can do a little bit better, I think.
- 1:08:52So that's where there's some opportunity there if we can stop
- 1:08:55there, rushing attack early, and get them where they have to kind
- 1:09:00of use those. Those quick plays to the to the
- 1:09:04wide receivers, in the running backs as de facto rushing plays,
- 1:09:07because they can't really generate anything between the
- 1:09:09tackles unless they run their quarterback.
- 1:09:12That's something to look at. All right, got you?
- 1:09:16All right? Another big one.
- 1:09:18And it's kind of the story of the year, right?
- 1:09:21Is we have Boy turnovers then now we're going against the team
- 1:09:26that has forced 13 total turnovers in seven games.
- 1:09:30They're almost getting two turnovers a game.
- 1:09:33And I'm sure you didn't want to hear this for high-end, they
- 1:09:36have 11 interceptions. They do their top 15 in the
- 1:09:44country, in that their top, 30 in the country, in forced
- 1:09:49turnovers. If we don't Play a clean game.
- 1:09:54You know, we're already kind of behind the eight ball but
- 1:09:56knowing that they don't have the explicit.
- 1:09:58If it was leery, we could afford zero, maybe we can afford one.
- 1:10:02I want 0, because if we, if we turn it over, we're given a
- 1:10:06hamstrung offense more chances. Absolutely.
- 1:10:12We this is a game where I think I mean turnovers kind of goes
- 1:10:14both ways here. I think we need to potentially
- 1:10:17Force One to give our offense and extra chance here maybe with
- 1:10:21a short field and I think we need to do a very good job of
- 1:10:25protecting the football. You know, they will, they will
- 1:10:29get an interception here and there and most of that comes off
- 1:10:33of them, their ability to get pressure with for enforce, those
- 1:10:37bad throws. There's a saying if you have
- 1:10:41eight, guys, if you have seven guys back in covered with, you
- 1:10:43have a cheer you're getting penalized.
- 1:10:45But if you have seven guys back in coverage, able to make a play
- 1:10:49mean, that's another big thing. And again, I'll talk about
- 1:10:53turnovers defensively real quick to.
- 1:10:54I mean, I mean, Brian, we're literally the fourth worst team
- 1:10:58in the country. If forcing turnovers, we have 5
- 1:11:01to the season and eventually you say to yourself, can't, there be
- 1:11:06a regression to the mean. And by that, that means we would
- 1:11:09get three on Thursday night and we've been close a handful of
- 1:11:13times, man. So it's not, it's not just that,
- 1:11:16you know, we're not there it's that were there.
- 1:11:19And sometimes we don't do just don't quite make the play.
- 1:11:22Yeah, so we got to get better at that.
- 1:11:24And and the last thing we'll talk about, as far as it on the
- 1:11:27table for it, he offensive wrinkles.
- 1:11:31I had before he gets deep into it, I had something else I
- 1:11:34wanted to discuss, we start shooting it and you say I want
- 1:11:38this. So, All yours big man.
- 1:11:41Yeah we got to see some offensive wrinkles.
- 1:11:44I like the scheme overall but prize already talked about it
- 1:11:48we're a little bit to Vidal and what we're trying to do we are
- 1:11:50not doing a good job of just going out there and Road grading
- 1:11:55teams and then throwing play-action off of that because
- 1:12:00we haven't been up to run effectively are play action has
- 1:12:02not been effective. That means that our quick
- 1:12:05passing game is also very predictable because we're trying
- 1:12:09to get those Those short, quick passes to the tight end into the
- 1:12:12running back. They work here and there but the
- 1:12:16defense start skiing on them, they take that away and that's
- 1:12:18why we've seen some stagnant drives happen in those second
- 1:12:22and third quarters. Until we start mixing things up
- 1:12:25a little bit to close out the game.
- 1:12:27We got to get better at getting some wrinkles in the offense,
- 1:12:32and we got to be better at adjusting it halftime.
- 1:12:34So when they try to take some of those things away, we're ready
- 1:12:37with a good counter in the second half.
- 1:12:39So We don't hit those roadblocks that.
- 1:12:41We've seen to start the second half on offense, you know, I
- 1:12:45want to see some some more creativity in the passing game.
- 1:12:48I'd like to see us. Go to some quick passes that
- 1:12:52aren't those. Kind of like quick quick screens
- 1:12:56and quick outs to the tight ends into the running backs.
- 1:13:00I want to see us mix-up and maybe run some counters off of
- 1:13:03that or some Throwbacks or you know something to kind of get
- 1:13:06the defense moving One Direction and attack than the other
- 1:13:09direction. Because right now we're not
- 1:13:11taking advantage of some of that flow that we're getting to those
- 1:13:14bread-and-butter plays that we've established.
- 1:13:17Yeah. And and again the bread and
- 1:13:18butter isn't the best of it. But I think two bronze point is
- 1:13:22if the bread-and-butter ain't doing it, you start throwing the
- 1:13:25wrinkles the eyes, the feet start moving and so when you
- 1:13:30throw those little wrinkles, you do those unique things.
- 1:13:35It makes guys think and then when you run a bread and butter
- 1:13:38inside power or something, right?
- 1:13:40Well, if you're putting a little window dressing again, something
- 1:13:43that to me, I we always saw as a staple of the Wisconsin, offense
- 1:13:47was like running a tight end around.
- 1:13:50I'll run a little sleep like that, where it's then it goes
- 1:13:53into the power, we don't see things like that.
- 1:13:56And those things are what makes linebackers move and make it a
- 1:13:59lot easier for the lining to get up field.
- 1:14:00So it will be interesting and we haven't seen a lot of wheels off
- 1:14:05of those tight end, quick outs and screens, not as many as I
- 1:14:10thought, we'd see where we can kind of take advantage of them
- 1:14:14and their aggressiveness jumping that route, well, wouldn't it be
- 1:14:17nice to see both Thomas and King on the field?
- 1:14:20Same time where when you run a wheel out of that because that
- 1:14:24linebackers going to stay home a couple more tenths of a second,
- 1:14:28right? Because if you're showing up
- 1:14:31again, I always just say, throw a fake screen, fake, the draw
- 1:14:35that line backers, not going to move.
- 1:14:37If the safeties are focused on the, you do slip out the wheel,
- 1:14:41and things like that. So, yeah, well, you can also put
- 1:14:44the running backs out there and send one one way.
- 1:14:47And one the other you get an extra linebacker out of the box.
- 1:14:50But let's just say this, at least as a fan, our concerns are
- 1:14:56being addressed vocally. Yep.
- 1:15:00Which is a complete turnaround from the last few years because
- 1:15:07we don't need to be vanilla. We need to play the best
- 1:15:09players. We need to do this, and I know
- 1:15:11some people will say, well, that's just words.
- 1:15:14Well, would you rather have no action, no words?
- 1:15:18Or would you rather, at least have word?
- 1:15:20Because what it tells you is, if somebody keep screwing up,
- 1:15:22somebody might get their asses fired.
- 1:15:25Yeah, we know that are we at least know at this point that
- 1:15:28our head coach sees it and is knowledge it.
- 1:15:31Now whether he does something about it, that's to be seen but
- 1:15:36we're at least getting the right message of.
- 1:15:41Hey, I see this. I hear you.
- 1:15:45We're trying to address that and then let the chips fall where
- 1:15:49they may, and hopefully we see some chip start falling in the
- 1:15:52right direction here. This weekend, or this.
- 1:15:55Let's hope so. Well let's go to those
- 1:15:56predictions Brian. And you know it's even with
- 1:16:01without if Devin lyrics here I have the scores a lot uglier to
- 1:16:05me but I still just can't do it. I think n CA C NC state has a
- 1:16:11home field advantage. Their defense is significantly
- 1:16:15better than our offense. Although our defense is better
- 1:16:18than their offense without Leary.
- 1:16:22I think this is low scoring, I'm still trying to figure You're
- 1:16:24out how the over unders 40, it was 42 and 43 earlier in the
- 1:16:29week. I don't get that but I think NC
- 1:16:32State does pull one off like a 17-10 win.
- 1:16:37Yeah, I'm kind of in that same ballpark.
- 1:16:40Yeah. I think their defense is just a
- 1:16:43little bit better than our defense.
- 1:16:46I think it's ugly game. I think we're both not great
- 1:16:49offensively. I think it's a 16-13 NC State
- 1:16:53victory. Alrighty.
- 1:16:57Well Brian big screeners last week was good to both of us.
- 1:17:01We both hit our games, your Okie State, taking the home, dog,
- 1:17:08with the points. They ended up winning out,
- 1:17:10right? And then thanks to a late sort
- 1:17:12of nothing touched down or again, UCLA goes over at the
- 1:17:16office and zoo and this weekend, Brian, where are you?
- 1:17:21Taking us on your big screen I'm going to the bourbon brawl
- 1:17:28Tennessee, Little Tennessee. Whiskey against some Kentucky
- 1:17:31bourbon. In that one, the over is over
- 1:17:39under 63. I'm actually going to take the
- 1:17:41over there. The spread is 13.
- 1:17:47Tennessee is a 13-point home favorite.
- 1:17:49I think that's just a little little too much for me.
- 1:17:54I think Tennessee, definitely wins this, but I think it's more
- 1:17:57in that kind of the ten eleven point range.
- 1:17:59So, givi Kentucky, and the 13. And I'm going to take that over
- 1:18:02at 63 all. So Brian Kentucky, tonight's a
- 1:18:06night game right after 7:00 7:00.
- 1:18:10Yep. So in o'clock.
- 1:18:11Alright, well for me, I looked around and I tried, there's some
- 1:18:15rank matchups that are later. Obviously it's a big one at noon
- 1:18:18with Ohio State and Penn State. I'm not going to be here for
- 1:18:20that and then lo and behold, I find number one team in the
- 1:18:25country is playing Florida and of our age group.
- 1:18:34This is the world's largest outdoor cocktail party.
- 1:18:38I've had some colleagues at work, go to this game.
- 1:18:41I've had some fraternity, Brothers, go this game.
- 1:18:43A, it's one of those if you want to go to a party weekend,
- 1:18:48whether you like either team or not go to it because apparently
- 1:18:51down in, Duval, that is one wild ass weekend.
- 1:18:56Currently we've got George at 23 and a half in an over-under of
- 1:19:0356 and a half. I'm not touching 23 and a half
- 1:19:07even though Georgia is superior. This is one of those get up
- 1:19:11games, right? Yep, this is a rivalry.
- 1:19:15They don't like each. Other has two stadiums read half
- 1:19:17the Stadium's Orange. and I sit here that under 56 is intriguing
- 1:19:25because I think that's where I got it.
- 1:19:29I got to go under. I think Georgia wins.
- 1:19:32I don't could I see them winning by 30 could I see them winning
- 1:19:36something? Like 3810.
- 1:19:38Yeah. Could I see it being something
- 1:19:42like 28? You know?
- 1:19:452810. Yeah.
- 1:19:47Because that Georgia offense has been this up and down and they
- 1:19:51are playing a significantly better team this week so or
- 1:19:56player wise Napier's getting their schematically but player
- 1:19:59wise is probably the best team they've seen in a while.
- 1:20:02So I'll take the under that game and just reminisce and, you
- 1:20:06know, we're getting loaded this weekend between the bourbon
- 1:20:09brawl and the cocktail Already we might stumble in here on
- 1:20:13Saturday night. I like that.
- 1:20:15I like that, right? Anything breaking the last hour
- 1:20:20and 20 minutes here. I'm not seeing anything, buddy.
