- 0:00Speaker 1: Darwin business busy relocating to another site. Well, they were
- 0:04Speaker 1: targeted by a group of youths who allegedly stole the
- 0:07Speaker 1: car keys then tried to flee the scene. Now joining
- 0:10Speaker 1: me on the line to tell us a little bit
- 0:12Speaker 1: more about the ordeal is Ross. Good morning to your Ross.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Good morning, Katie. How are you today? Good?
- 0:19Speaker 1: Thank you, thanks so much for your time. Ross. Tell
- 0:22Speaker 1: me what happened earlier in the week.
- 0:25Speaker 2: So, as you know, Katie, our business Oldipooch is moving
- 0:28Speaker 2: to Bishop Street and we'll flat out Monday trying to
- 0:31Speaker 2: do that, start for in and out of the loading
- 0:34Speaker 2: doctor whole time, and four young youths about ten years
- 0:39Speaker 2: old twelve years old came through waved at my wife
- 0:45Speaker 2: and what you didn't know at the time is they'd
- 0:47Speaker 2: already been into the front of the van and stole
- 0:49Speaker 2: several cents of keys with different fobs and access keys,
- 0:53Speaker 2: and then took off and continue to engage with or
- 0:57Speaker 2: torment several other businesses in the area as well. And
- 1:02Speaker 2: that was pretty devastating enough when we found out that
- 1:05Speaker 2: they had taken the keys to our delivery van, Katie.
- 1:10Speaker 2: But then about an hour later and we reported this
- 1:13Speaker 2: to the police. An hour later, they came back. Now
- 1:17Speaker 2: one can only assume they're coming back because no police
- 1:21Speaker 2: had turned up, so they knew there was no worry
- 1:24Speaker 2: about any consequences for taking our keys, so they were
- 1:28Speaker 2: then most likely ready to take our van. So it
- 1:32Speaker 2: had gone from just stealing some keys repair cost one
- 1:36Speaker 2: thousand dollars to preparing to steal a thirty thousand dollars
- 1:40Speaker 2: van and then perhaps joy ride will put the public
- 1:44Speaker 2: at risk and obviously our business at a great deal
- 1:47Speaker 2: of loss. So, as you know, Okadie, I've been a
- 1:52Speaker 2: former police officer, so I was happy to go and
- 1:56Speaker 2: try and get our keys back and try and get
- 2:00Speaker 2: these kids to at least have a chat with the police.
- 2:04Speaker 2: So I took chase after them into the bushes and
- 2:10Speaker 2: one of them fell over, And at the same time,
- 2:12Speaker 2: I'm speaking to my wife, and she called Triple O
- 2:15Speaker 2: to say that I was actively pursuing three to four
- 2:18Speaker 2: youth five minutes before she could get through on Triple O, Katie,
- 2:25Speaker 2: five minutes five five minutes. Now, I'm pretty safe myself. However,
- 2:35Speaker 2: that's still five minutes. What if it had been a
- 2:37Speaker 2: young lady getting attacked in a shopping center or someone else,
- 2:40Speaker 2: or five minutes on a triple O call is ridiculous.
- 2:44Speaker 2: And then we never saw police. We never saw the Nolan,
- 2:49Speaker 2: Turkey police turn up at all. So at the same time,
- 2:55Speaker 2: one of those youths jumped over the fence into the
- 2:57Speaker 2: airport precinct and we saw the AFP and the airport
- 3:02Speaker 2: team do a very extensive search for that person, which
- 3:07Speaker 2: unfortunately I didn't get, but they did a very good
- 3:10Speaker 2: job of doing that. But the NT police still didn't
- 3:14Speaker 2: turn up.
- 3:16Speaker 1: And Ross I understand that these kids actually had an
- 3:21Speaker 1: AX with them as well.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Yeah, so we didn't heart this at the time, and
- 3:27Speaker 2: to be honest, it wouldn't have changed my personal position
- 3:29Speaker 2: because of my experience, and I know I'm slightly different
- 3:32Speaker 2: than many people out there in public. Where I went
- 3:37Speaker 2: back to where I first engaged them chasing them, I
- 3:40Speaker 2: saw one fall over and I went to that location
- 3:43Speaker 2: looking for keys and the like that they'd stolen with
- 3:46Speaker 2: the crime that they committed, and I found a tomahawk
- 3:49Speaker 2: ran new tomahawk, which most likely had been stolen from
- 3:53Speaker 2: Bunnings down the road from us. So that means Katie,
- 3:59Speaker 2: because police haven't been able to turn up because the
- 4:01Speaker 2: resources have been surged into our spring, or surge to
- 4:05Speaker 2: wherever you like. They've gone through four to five businesses
- 4:10Speaker 2: in our precinct whilst armed with tomahawk. They've gone into
- 4:15Speaker 2: the gym, bloody car rentals, the plumbing store, and the
- 4:20Speaker 2: ice skating ring. Yeah, armed with a tomahawk, Katie. And
- 4:25Speaker 2: because for some reason, we seem including our politicians, want
- 4:29Speaker 2: to ignore small crime and downplay it is anti social baby,
- 4:34Speaker 2: it's not. It's crime. They're going unchecked and they're going
- 4:38Speaker 2: to get more brazen. And these were young youth, not intoxicated. Yeah, exactly,
- 4:44Speaker 2: armed in public.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Which you know is exactly what everybody's been saying over
- 4:49Speaker 1: the last week or so two ross like, it's we
- 4:52Speaker 1: all understand what's unfolding in Alice Springs. We all understand
- 4:54Speaker 1: that alcohol is an issue, but we've got a couple
- 4:57Speaker 1: of very serious situations here. We've got the alcohol issue,
- 5:01Speaker 1: but we've also got a serious problem with youth crime
- 5:05Speaker 1: and we have had for a long time.
- 5:07Speaker 2: We have to be honest, Katie, we need to one
- 5:10Speaker 2: of the things that some of the politicians need to
- 5:12Speaker 2: stop using as any of the ethnicity of anyone committing
- 5:15Speaker 2: a crime. They need to stop over using the word
- 5:18Speaker 2: antisocial behavior because they're trying to wash down a crime,
- 5:23Speaker 2: which could be disorderly conduct or riteous evasive behavior as
- 5:28Speaker 2: just anti social behavior. But if we actually engage with
- 5:32Speaker 2: people when they're just a little bit disorderly, borderline committing
- 5:36Speaker 2: a crime, we might stop them from committing a crime.
- 5:40Speaker 2: We have the time to talk to them, to engage
- 5:43Speaker 2: them in a different way. There's no use trying to
- 5:46Speaker 2: set up programs after they've committed crimes. And there's no
- 5:50Speaker 2: use talking to someone who's committed a crime months later
- 5:53Speaker 2: to say, you really were a naughty boy that day.
- 5:55Speaker 2: How that we fix it. So we need to be
- 5:58Speaker 2: able to have enough staff and off to deal with
- 6:02Speaker 2: crimes as they could. What happened to us Monday, Katie
- 6:06Speaker 2: was a crime. We can't downplay that. And just because
- 6:10Speaker 2: we're lucky and it's only one thousand dollars worth of
- 6:12Speaker 2: re keying and the like, it's a thirty thousand dollars
- 6:17Speaker 2: crime if they.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Got away with the van, well that's exactly right, you know,
- 6:21Speaker 1: but property crime is not like, it's not just a
- 6:24Speaker 1: non event. And I think that you're spot on in
- 6:27Speaker 1: the sense that you've said, you know, this kind of
- 6:29Speaker 1: thing is happening so often that it is like it's
- 6:31Speaker 1: almost desensitizing us all to the fact that we've got
- 6:35Speaker 1: this escalation in the level of crime, and this escalation
- 6:39Speaker 1: you know, in the type of behavior that we're seeing
- 6:42Speaker 1: from young people as well. You know, I could tell
- 6:45Speaker 1: you five people I know that have had their keys
- 6:47Speaker 1: stolen in the last few months, and they may not
- 6:50Speaker 1: have gotten away with the vehicle in some cases they have,
- 6:55Speaker 1: but you're right, it is a crime.
- 6:59Speaker 2: It is. I know about people that haven't made public
- 7:02Speaker 2: that they've had the house raided at night with their
- 7:06Speaker 2: kids and they had the whole front door kicked in
- 7:07Speaker 2: while they're inside. That never made the public attention. There's
- 7:13Speaker 2: so many crimes going underreported and underspoken about, and we
- 7:18Speaker 2: constantly see people were saying, it's just it's a little
- 7:20Speaker 2: bit anti social behavior. You know, it's a crime. Katie,
- 7:23Speaker 2: You and I and all the great listeners in the
- 7:26Speaker 2: territory should be the first person that any government cares about.
- 7:30Speaker 2: We should be carrying about the victims and the public
- 7:33Speaker 2: and then worry about the criminals later. One thing I
- 7:38Speaker 2: know I've heard you talk about the flaw pricing, and
- 7:42Speaker 2: there's certainly debates about that, but we've thrown because they've
- 7:46Speaker 2: changed the floor closing, we've thrown a massive amount of
- 7:49Speaker 2: weapons in the form of glass spirit bottles out there
- 7:54Speaker 2: into the street for those that get intoxicated to then
- 7:58Speaker 2: use against their partners before the silver bladder really hurt
- 8:02Speaker 2: no one physically, but those glass bottles are now a
- 8:06Speaker 2: massive weapon, and if you dug into the nurses and
- 8:09Speaker 2: I like, you'll see a lot of actual injuries from
- 8:12Speaker 2: that glass as well. But if we can have a
- 8:17Speaker 2: greater involvement from our police and they're not drawn down
- 8:21Speaker 2: and taken everywhere else as a crime first occurs, if
- 8:25Speaker 2: we can deal with it, including the lower level crimes,
- 8:29Speaker 2: we're probably going to be able to stop the upper
- 8:31Speaker 2: level crimes before they become serious.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Yeah, well, Ross, Ross Bolan, of course, you and your
- 8:40Speaker 1: lovely wife Hannah have got Aussie pooch. You know, it's
- 8:44Speaker 1: terrible to hear that that has happened to you guys
- 8:47Speaker 1: earlier this week. I really appreciate you coming on the
- 8:49Speaker 1: show and having a chat to me this morning, and yeah,
- 8:54Speaker 1: I appreciate it.
- 8:56Speaker 2: I'd love to talk to any time, Katie. You know,
- 8:58Speaker 2: you know my background though, and I'll do the best
- 9:02Speaker 2: for you to always stay bipartisan. But we're hopefully looking
- 9:07Speaker 2: forward to seeing you and your husband come and visit
- 9:09Speaker 2: us at the new Bishop Street facility. It's just this
- 9:13Speaker 2: is really put it down or on our on our move,
- 9:15Speaker 2: and it certainly put a shock that those kids went
- 9:19Speaker 2: armed into all those other stores that have been our
- 9:21Speaker 2: neighbors for the last five years. And that excars me
- 9:24Speaker 2: the greatest.
- 9:25Speaker 1: We'll makee all the best with the move and your
- 9:27Speaker 1: spot on it does put a down on, you know,
- 9:30Speaker 1: on everything, the fact that that's happened. But I appreciate
- 9:33Speaker 1: your time this morning. Thanks so much for coming on
- 9:34Speaker 1: and having your chat with me.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Thanks Beatie, thanks for us
