Transcript
- 0:00You're listening to Strictly Business Podcast with Lindsay Williams.
- 0:05The JSC has closed its doors for another day, so it's time for the 5 o'clock
- 0:08shadow.
- 0:08And as always on a Wednesday, I speak to Skulk Lowe, Portfolio Manager at PSG
- 0:12Wealth Old Oak in Cape Town.
- 0:14First thing I've got to say, Skulk, if I'm slightly quiet or if I seem a bit
- 0:18distracted because I'm looking at my television on the left-hand side,
- 0:21England kick off in 56 minutes against the DRC in the first of their...
- 0:27knockout stages, hopefully the first of their knockout matches in the World Cup.
- 0:31So forgive me.
- 0:32You know how you feel ahead of a Springbok game, right?
- 0:35Yeah, It's excitement versus nervousness.
- 0:41I can hear that in your voice, Lindsay.
- 0:43I'm breathing heavily.
- 0:43I can hear that.
- 0:45I can hear that.
- 0:46No, seriously.
- 0:48Skulk, it's July the 1st.
- 0:50I don't really want to go through in much detail what went on in the six months that
- 0:55started January the 1st.
- 0:57um but more what's going to happen in the next six months because we know the world
- 1:03is a different place to the
- 1:04world that we were speaking of six months ago yeah how's that i mean we're sitting
- 1:11on the
- 1:11the first day as i woke up this morning i went like h2 this is
- 1:18this is h2 first day of the second half of 2026.
- 1:23Ah, quickly I have time gone.
- 1:25Crazy, crazy, crazy.
- 1:27And it's been a crazy six months.
- 1:31It's just been up and down.
- 1:34Tomorrow is like totally the opposite of the previous day.
- 1:39And I mean, markets, it's been strange.
- 1:43I mean, here we're sitting halfway through 2026.
- 1:48And it's sort of a strange feeling because we went into...
- 1:53And 2026, with this total optimism, when I say we are South Africans, because
- 2:00in 2000 and what was it, 2024, we had a fantastic time in the market.
- 2:06The JSE was just rocking and rolling.
- 2:10I mean, what was it, 2024, we were looking at a return of
- 2:17what?
- 2:20Are you getting your dates right?
- 2:21It's 2025 you're talking about, right?
- 2:23No, 2024 was already good.
- 2:25Are you going back even further?
- 2:28Yeah, the latter part of 2024 was good.
- 2:30I mean, we actually had a solid time.
- 2:33And then 2025, local equity market was 42%.
- 2:39It was fantastic.
- 2:40And then we went into 2026 and people said, well, there's sort of an upbeat.
- 2:47feeling on emerging markets in general.
- 2:50Commodities were booming and the outlook for South Africa is looking good.
- 2:55And here we're sitting halfway through the year.
- 2:57The JSE in Rand terms is down, well, down 3% or 4%, if I'm not mistaken.
- 3:05When you look at it in dollar terms, it's 2 point something, 3% softer.
- 3:12I mean, when you look at it compared to emerging markets, and we've often had
- 3:16this.
- 3:17this conversation, you know, how fantastically the South African market has
- 3:22recovered,
- 3:24seriously outperformed the MSCI All-Country World Index, the MSCI emerging
- 3:28market.
- 3:29As we sit here, I mean, we're lagging the MSCI emerging market in dollar terms about
- 3:3420% in
- 3:36one year.
- 3:37That's a turnaround, isn't it?
- 3:37That's a really big turnaround.
- 3:39It just shows you the cyclical nature of the South African economy translates
- 3:44itself into the...
- 3:45JSC, because we're still a commodity-based economy, not quite as much as it was maybe
- 3:5340, 50 years ago, because there's been diversification, but today it's still the
- 3:57case.
- 3:58And this is the question I've got for you.
- 4:00I mean, I love the way that gold has bounced back from below 4,000 today to be
- 4:04up to 2.1%.
- 4:06The white metals are a little bit firmer as well, but one bounce back doesn't make
- 4:12a half year, does it?
- 4:13you Are you still deep down, are you still a commodity bull?
- 4:19Yes, undoubtedly.
- 4:23I mean, for sure.
- 4:24So let's, I mean, the reason for, there's commodities and there's commodities.
- 4:30And we're not going to go into the whole gold thing again, because I know your game
- 4:34starts in an hour's time, and we're not going to
- 4:37make it, sorry.
- 4:38Not with you, no.
- 4:39No, not with me.
- 4:41But the business case for gold is still there.
- 4:43It's still very much intact.
- 4:44I'm not selling my gold.
- 4:46I'm lighter.
- 4:47I've made it clear earlier this year that when we went into that Iran-US
- 4:54war, I think that first three or four days, I did mention that I did take
- 5:01some profits.
- 5:03But again, the gold price is looking more attractive now.
- 5:09The gold mines are still doing extremely well.
- 5:12And the business case for gold is still there.
- 5:14I mean, we're still sitting in an environment which is pestered by
- 5:19geopolitical unrest.
- 5:21Yes, I know the US, or more specifically, Trump, want to make peace now because he's
- 5:27looking towards
- 5:29November.
- 5:30He wants to make peace.
- 5:32The fact of the matter is that the world is still a very, very uncomfortable place
- 5:38as we
- 5:39sit here.
- 5:40And then you can continue and look at things like economic growth.
- 5:44You can look at how the AI bubble is actually just sort of keeping everything.
- 5:50I mean, this CapEx is just crazy how these companies are spending.
- 5:56That is keeping things afloat.
- 5:58And here's a very, very quick example.
- 6:02When you look at it, and I just mentioned the MSCI World Index, this is sort of a
- 6:08tongue in the cheek because
- 6:09South Africa is still the sixth largest emerging market in the Emerging Markets
- 6:15Index.
- 6:16And when you look at the past 12 months, the MSCI World, or let's take this year,
- 6:22this year alone,
- 6:25the MSCI Markets Index did 24% in dollar terms up to yesterday's close.
- 6:31The JSE all show over the same period in dollar terms, it's minus 2%.
- 6:36So that's pretty much 26% alpha.
- 6:40And then you would say, well, clearly not all emerging markets is created equal.
- 6:46You need to go and look at that index, Lindsay.
- 6:48It's not an emerging market play anymore.
- 6:51It's an AI play.
- 6:53Because when last did you look at the constituents, not specifically the
- 6:59constituents, the… countries within the emerging markets and i just wanted to say
- 7:05i've just told you that
- 7:06africa is the sixth largest would you say is the largest in there the largest
- 7:12emerging market index you
- 7:13see it depends on on what countries are deemed to be emerging markets these days
- 7:19is india an emerging
- 7:20market is china emerging an emerging market both of them are so it must be
- 7:25india Okay, so
- 7:27funnily enough, India is only fourth largest.
- 7:30within the index.
- 7:32For many years, China was, and they are giving it away, China was the largest.
- 7:38And when I say the largest, they were the largest by country model.
- 7:41Oh, of course.
- 7:42I should have known when you mentioned AI.
- 7:44Yes, okay.
- 7:44Yeah.
- 7:46Sorry.
- 7:46So 2020, the weight of China in the MSCI emerging
- 7:53market index was over 40%.
- 7:56In actual fact, it turned around about...
- 7:58a 42% weight in the index.
- 8:02And it was the largest by far.
- 8:04When we look at China, I think 18 months ago, a little bit more than 18 months, it
- 8:09came down to about 34%,
- 8:1133%.
- 8:12A third of the index was China.
- 8:14As we sit here, China is not even the second largest anymore.
- 8:18It's now the third largest.
- 8:20It only make up 18% of the MSCI emerging market index.
- 8:26With Taiwan, carrying a 27% weight, and South Korea, 23%.
- 8:32And when you look inside those, let's call it specific shares,
- 8:39you'll clearly understand the largest share currently in the index, that's
- 8:44Taiwan Semiconductors, carrying
- 8:46a weight of 13% of the total MSCI.
- 8:49emerging market index it sounds dangerous skulk it's it sounds it sounds like it's a
- 8:54narrowing just like we had a narrowing of
- 8:56markets last year that are bigger than well i don't know if they're bigger than
- 9:00the msci but they're the ones that people use as their benchmarks for
- 9:03example the s&p 500 the uh the nasdaq uh driven by a small number of
- 9:10stocks and that has huge implications for the fund management industry and in
- 9:15investors everywhere whether they're with
- 9:17a fund manager or investing individually.
- 9:19You cannot ignore these stocks.
- 9:21And that's dangerous to me because when they're going up, it's fantastic.
- 9:24When they come down, then they come down.
- 9:26We know that.
- 9:27This is an AI bubble and it is big.
- 9:30And could it become much bigger?
- 9:33Yes, it can.
- 9:34But this is an AI bubble.
- 9:35Make no mistake.
- 9:37You know, when your emerging market index is now, you know, Taiwan Semiconductor
- 9:4213%, 7% Samsung,
- 9:44SK Hynix, that's… been nowhere now close on one stage actually the largest company
- 9:50in in south
- 9:51korea a little company called micron and here's another thing i'm an msci value
- 9:58index People look at the MSCI value index lately and say, well, look at that.
- 10:02Look at the performance of the value stocks.
- 10:06It is starting to revert.
- 10:08That's it.
- 10:08It's value stocks.
- 10:10So now you're going to look at the value index.
- 10:13The largest company in the MSCI value index a little bit more than a year ago
- 10:17was Intel.
- 10:19That company was on the brink of being bankrupt.
- 10:21It was $20 a share.
- 10:24That's when Donald Trump says he invested for the American people.
- 10:28I don't know how many billions he put into it.
- 10:31But anyway, he got it at around $20 a share.
- 10:34Wasn't it a couple of weeks ago we were talking about $140 a share?
- 10:38Yeah.
- 10:39Micron.
- 10:40You can go look at that graph as well.
- 10:41This is also a boring company.
- 10:44They only make hard drives or what do they call it these days?
- 10:48Storage for computers and RAM.
- 10:51They've got the memory.
- 10:52This is boring stuff inside a computer and laptops.
- 10:57It got cheaper and cheaper over the past 30 years, and it's just boring, And then
- 11:04people realized,
- 11:04wait a minute, we need for these storage farms and for AI, we need these
- 11:12RAMs.
- 11:12And there's a massive amount of shortage.
- 11:16Between 2016, and you can go and pull the graph later, between 2016 and last year,
- 11:23the share price of Micron.
- 11:25remained between, let's call it $100 and $110 for pretty much 10 years.
- 11:30Very similar to Intel.
- 11:31It flatlined.
- 11:32Boring, boring, boring.
- 11:34And then people realized, wait a minute, we need this stuff.
- 11:38This stuff actually tripled and quadrupled in price and Micron is trading at $1,200
- 11:44today.
- 11:44It surpassed Microsoft as the fourth largest company a week, two weeks ago.
- 11:52How's them apples?
- 11:54Okay, so the bottom line is that what we've got here is a bubble, but that
- 11:58bubble can get bigger.
- 11:59You are sticking with gold and you like the commodity cycle.
- 12:04We haven't got time to go into the sectors, the base metals, the bulk
- 12:08commodities and all that sort of thing, or even energy with
- 12:11oil now having been $120 at the beginning, or sorry, the end of the first quarter is
- 12:17now down at
- 12:17around $70.
- 12:19Let's call it $70 a barrel, depending on which grade you look at.
- 12:22$70 a barrel at the beginning of the third quarter of 2026.
- 12:28Are you taking protection against a crash that will bring the whole market down
- 12:33should the AI bubble start to
- 12:35burst?
- 12:37Yes, but by having, let's call it gold in your portfolio, that is a
- 12:43hedge.
- 12:45Earlier this year, I did.
- 12:47invest in companies or up weight my weight in companies, which today got hurt
- 12:54badly.
- 12:54But the likes of the British American Tobacco Company and hours of bush, those
- 13:01are deemed,
- 13:02let's call it defensive type of stocks.
- 13:07I always say when you find it in your kitchen cupboard or find it in your
- 13:11bathroom cupboard, it should be found in
- 13:14your portfolio.
- 13:15So that's...
- 13:16That's the typical stocks where I would be finding safety for now.
- 13:22Okay.
- 13:23And I would just caution people, don't follow the herd.
- 13:26Because this, I've told you so many times, I've seen this before.
- 13:33And yes, this bubble could go bigger.
- 13:36I'm not Nostradamus.
- 13:37I'm not calling the tops on anything.
- 13:40I'm just showing you the risk is currently involved.
- 13:43Because a company...
- 13:44Boring, boring, boring company that was trading at $100 and $10 lost.
- 13:49You're now trading at $1,020.
- 13:51We know it can't last.
- 13:52We're too old to not know that it can't last, Skunk.
- 13:55So that's it.
- 13:55Okay, I want to talk to you about something on the JSC today because when I
- 13:58see South32 selling its aluminium value chain assets to
- 14:02Alcoa for $5.6 billion and seeing the share price go up over 10%.
- 14:08I think to myself, what's happening with this company?
- 14:10Is this part of a bigger strategy or did they just see an opportunity?
- 14:13Was it a price they couldn't resist?
- 14:15Tell me more about South32 before we go to the markets, please.
- 14:19No, that's clearly strategy.
- 14:22It's not a great opportunity.
- 14:25So, I mean, that's cleaning.
- 14:28That's some proper house cleaning.
- 14:30And they made it clear, you know, post the transaction, the portfolio is expected,
- 14:37predominantly.
- 14:38expected to consist of base and precious metals.
- 14:42So, yeah, I think it's sort of a transient strategy for South32.
- 14:47And, yeah, market loved it.
- 14:50Is it doing an Anglo-American, like Anglo-American got rid of the white
- 14:54metals?
- 14:55Is it something like that?
- 14:56Very similar.
- 14:58It's very, very similar.
- 15:00Okay.
- 15:01So, yeah.
- 15:01I mean, a big transaction, 12.
- 15:04Last that I saw, share price up 12.4% for today.
- 15:08So, market loved it.
- 15:10Market loved it for sure.
- 15:11And I like the fact that the market was surprised by it.
- 15:13There wasn't any leaking or anything.
- 15:15Not much anyway.
- 15:16Skulk, the dollar round is 1640.
- 15:20Next week, we'll have a chance to talk about the U.S.
- 15:21dollar because it's the key.
- 15:23It doesn't matter what people say about Bitcoin or even gold or even the remnimbi.
- 15:28the dollar is key to every single asset class worldwide.
- 15:31And I'd really like your opinion on the dollar index, which is cementing its
- 15:38position
- 15:39above 100.
- 15:39But that's for next week.
- 15:411640 is the dollar round.
- 15:43British pound against the round, 2176.
- 15:45The euro round is, what is the euro round?
- 15:471867 in the euro dollar, about 11405.
- 15:51Gold price, as I said at the beginning of this chat, gold price has bounced back
- 15:55very nicely, 2% up at the moment,
- 15:574089.
- 15:59Platinum is $1,600 on the nail, 2.2% to the good, and palladium a laggard but
- 16:04still up three-quarters of a
- 16:06percent to $12.20 per ounce.
- 16:09US 10-year bond is $4.465.
- 16:12S&P 500 futures currently $75.59, barely changed.
- 16:18Oh, I forgot the other commodities.
- 16:19Sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself.
- 16:21Told you I'd be excited during this chat.
- 16:24Crude oil is down 1.5% to $68.43.
- 16:28And Brent crude is $71.45, down 2%.
- 16:33So it's bucking the trend in commodities, except for copper, which is also down.
- 16:37Down 1% to $6.13.5 per pound.
- 16:44Gave you the South African 10-year, gave you the S&P, gave you the US.
- 16:48Let's have a quick look at the South African 10-year bond.
- 16:50That is 8.41%, another good performance, 3.5 basis points down for the yield.
- 16:56So the bond market doing well.
- 16:58And Bitcoin, having got very close to a new 52-week low yesterday, is trying to
- 17:04get back above
- 17:0560,000, 59,900, up two and two-thirds percent.
- 17:10What were the big winners on the JSC today?
- 17:12South32 top of the list, Skulk?
- 17:15Undoubtedly.
- 17:16Yeah.
- 17:16So South32 is at the top.
- 17:20Close of the day, 11.3% up.
- 17:23There's also Bytes.
- 17:24SPAR making a bit of a recovery today.
- 17:26We know Spurs have been...
- 17:29Under massive pressure lately, they actually improved 3.6% today.
- 17:34But then you see quite a few of these precious metals.
- 17:38Impala Platinum, 2.7%.
- 17:40Goldfields, 2.4%.
- 17:42Afromat, 2.3%.
- 17:44So in general, not a bad day.
- 17:46I'd like to mention the NASPAS because that's one that gave me an early feeling
- 17:51as going to zero.
- 17:53So clearly not today, up 2%.
- 17:54Look at the downside.
- 17:57It was definitely not the day for the banks.
- 17:59What is that?
- 18:01APSA down 4.3% on my delayed screen.
- 18:04What happened there?
- 18:06That's after it dropped 6 point something yesterday.
- 18:09At one stage, I think APSA was down 9% yesterday.
- 18:14It came up with a trading statement and just said that their ROE
- 18:21is going to come down a little bit.
- 18:23And this is what you don't want to see this.
- 18:25coming from the banks because they had a bit of a re-rating.
- 18:29They priced the books.
- 18:31We're trading at between 0.8, 0.9 times last year.
- 18:35And then they actually indicated that the ROE is going to be increasing or they've
- 18:40turned on equity.
- 18:41And yeah, Mr.
- 18:42Marker did not like the fact that they mentioned that the ROE seemed to be as
- 18:48good as it got.
- 18:49last year.
- 18:50Something we should also talk about is, is it because they're falling behind with
- 18:53digital banking, with online banking?
- 18:55Are they not keeping up?
- 18:56Are they being the old stage sort of bricks and mortar banks?
- 19:00Or is it simply because you look at South Africa, and it hasn't got a growth rate to
- 19:05speak of.
- 19:06And if you're not growing the economy, you're not growing transactions for banks,
- 19:09and therefore banks don't do well.
- 19:10It was the writing on the wall.
- 19:11It's just a question of the timing again.
- 19:13Market is always about timing.
- 19:15But we can discuss the banks again, even because we don't often do so.
- 19:20Sassl down again, 156, down 3.5%.
- 19:24I've got it on my screen.
- 19:25Do you think that one's over or are we going to bounce back?
- 19:28Well, it all depends on if you think the war's over.
- 19:30I mean, I think if we sat here six months ago, just before the war started,
- 19:37and remember back then, Sassl was trading at below 100 grand.
- 19:41I mean, I remember you and I having this conversation where I told you I just gave
- 19:45Cecil the kiss of death.
- 19:47I recommended it as a buy.
- 19:49And just by the way, that buy was just below 100 Rand.
- 19:52It was 89, 90 bucks.
- 19:54Where did it go?
- 19:55250, 260 recently?
- 19:57Yeah, it was way, I don't know.
- 19:59Wait a minute.
- 19:59Yeah, 52 high, 242 Rand.
- 20:03So it went to 242 Rand.
- 20:05So yeah, when you look at it, 156 compared to the highs of 242.
- 20:11or 32-week highs to 42, one might be a bit disappointed.
- 20:16But looking at where the world price now trades, and compared to where Cecil was
- 20:21trading earlier this year, I think a
- 20:23lot of Cecil shareholders will still take this as a win.
- 20:27Okay.
- 20:29To close, let's have a look at the indices.
- 20:31I think topped by the resources from what I can see on my very unsophisticated
- 20:35screen.
- 20:36Tell us what happened.
- 20:38Yeah, that's an important point because when you look at the JSE, I mentioned JSE
- 20:42down 4% here today.
- 20:44When you look at the resources, that is down 14%.
- 20:48That was to yesterday's close.
- 20:50Industrial is down 5%.
- 20:51The financial is still positive 8%.
- 20:53So we needed a bit of a recovery coming from resources.
- 20:59I wouldn't call 0.84% increase today a recovery.
- 21:03But yeah, how do you eat an elephant?
- 21:05Yeah, one.
- 21:06bite at a time.
- 21:06So yeah, JC Allsheet today closed the day at 109,613 points.
- 21:13That was down 64 basis points.
- 21:16The top 40, 101,276.
- 21:19That's also down 65 basis points.
- 21:21I just mentioned the resources.
- 21:23Resources bugged the trend.
