- 0:23None hamster with a blunt.
- 0:34Pen knife for doing. Quicker, quicker, quicker.
- 0:39Welcome back to a hamster. With a blunt pen knife.
- 0:42The Doctor Who Commentary Podcast Matt.
- 0:48I Am Beautiful, Am I not? Oh yeah, you gorgeous love.
- 0:54You liar. Especially when you're all
- 0:57fapped up, what does that mean? You got a really bright light
- 1:01shining off right on you. What does fapped up mean?
- 1:06Front axial projection. Oh, you know, it's just like
- 1:11when you were talking about Ansar throughout time in Iran.
- 1:13You had no clue. What you're going on?
- 1:14About till I read the novel. Oh, I mean, why as well I could.
- 1:21Be happy with the best of them. I am retribution.
- 1:29I'm your retribution. Don't you fucking forget it.
- 1:32All right? That sounds like a Eurovision
- 1:35lyric retribution. You were what?
- 1:40Now I'm revolved. Now I'm transformed.
- 1:48You can. Have until differing announcing
- 1:51it. Oh my God.
- 1:55And can we have all the side men in the background as dancers
- 2:02with the bow? Oh Jesus Christ, it's too late
- 2:08to be doing this. We've both got mad.
- 2:11We are here to talk about Silver Nemesis episode 3.
- 2:17How's it going so far? Loving it.
- 2:20Brilliant Death is about a door death.
- 2:23Is about a door. Could you do me a very small
- 2:27favour then, before we go into Episode 3?
- 2:29And that is just to see if you've been paying attention and
- 2:33let the listeners know what has occurred in Sylvan Nemesis
- 2:35today. Off you go.
- 2:38So Sylvan Nemesis, to date The Doctor in 1638, battled Lady
- 2:44Painfoot for Control Validium, a living metal created by Rascal
- 2:49on Omega and other luminaries from Gallifrey's past.
- 2:52The Doctor sent the living metal into orbit, but also shaved off
- 2:56a couple of lumps, one of which made a bow, one of which made an
- 2:59arrow, because that made sure that Nemesis didn't have a
- 3:03sufficient critical mass to do whatever Validium does when it's
- 3:07all critically masked and he sent it off in a comet.
- 3:14It's been whizzing around, coming back to Earth every 25
- 3:18years in a decaying orbit, and it's going to lack.
- 3:21Well, it has landed in Windsor in 1988.
- 3:26Lady Paine Thoughts found that out through magic because
- 3:30apparently that's real now and has travelled forward in time
- 3:33with Herman Servant Richard and the Arrow of Nemesis, which was
- 3:40the one bit of an idiom that she had managed to obtain
- 3:44independently. Neo Nazi de Flores who Pines for
- 3:48Hitler has come over to Windsor from South America as you do
- 3:54with a fearsome band of about 6 mercenaries and the Nemesis bow
- 4:01the the third element required to create the critical mass of
- 4:06validium. Also to seek the statue because
- 4:09he believes it will enable him to re establish the Third Reich
- 4:15under his Nazi command. And then the third Force.
- 4:21The Cybermen have a master fleet in orbit that was invisible but
- 4:26has now been made uninvisible somehow with a what a high fi.
- 4:33And they also want Nemesis for presumably nefarious reasons of
- 4:37their own. And the Doctor and Ace are sort
- 4:40of wandering around in the background trying to understand
- 4:44what these three different parties are are trying to do,
- 4:50trying not to get killed, and basically waiting for the moment
- 4:53when they're going to presumably do something to stop this
- 4:57tragedy from occurring. So it's a great, it's a great
- 5:01drama. Honestly, you make that sound
- 5:04fucking gripping. It's not.
- 5:08It's not quite what Chris Clough brought to the screen.
- 5:13It sounds like the greatest Doctor Who story of all time.
- 5:17Oh wait, it is. It is.
- 5:21Is this the greatest Doctor Who story of all time leader?
- 5:25It is We ride to Destiny. Maths We surely do, honey.
- 5:34We. Surely do.
- 5:36Oh my God, we've got that. I'll tell you what, When we hit
- 5:39that sequence, right? Can we just quote every line?
- 5:43Everyone's a gem. I don't care if anyone says it
- 5:47was cynical casting bringing in Dolores Gray.
- 5:49She did steal my cook. There was a Dorothea.
- 5:55She died in 16. There's a snow poison.
- 6:02This is unbelievable riding around and I'll find someone
- 6:09who's researched my family. Tree.
- 6:12It's all done in the best possible taste.
- 6:17I've got a bit of a look. Of Kenny Everett About me
- 6:19actually definitely definitely definitely that that's the next
- 6:24cabaret sketch when BFI surely show Silver Nemesis for season
- 6:2925 release. We'll do we'll.
- 6:31Be on the stage, That scene I'll do Lady Paine for and you can be
- 6:36It can be Mrs. Remington in full.
- 6:39Kenny Everett with the legs. As long as I can have the favour
- 6:43Bower on my legs. Well, you usually do, so I don't
- 6:46see why you. It's true.
- 6:47Why change your habit of a lifetime?
- 6:51Well, let's let's go and see the 2 greatest female characters
- 6:55coming together. It's Silver Nemesis Part 3 in.
- 6:59321 Let's go. Yeah, some would say Missus
- 7:06Remington isn't essential to the plot.
- 7:10You could have shaved her out. You could have shaved a lot out
- 7:14of the. Story.
- 7:15And the plot would still work. They're Remington and.
- 7:19The trouble is, I wouldn't want to lose the Queen or the
- 7:21skinheads or this is Remington, that that's the problem.
- 7:25It's like if you take any of those elements out, none of them
- 7:29are essential, but they're kind of, they're kind of are to make
- 7:31it what it is. If the idea of Doctor Who is to
- 7:36entertain, yeah, yeah, then it's this peak Dr. Who?
- 7:41Oh God, yeah. But absolutely.
- 7:44This is exactly what I want from Doctor Who.
- 7:48It is funny. It's charming.
- 7:52It's just got loads of stuff happening.
- 7:56The plot kind of makes sense. It's got a likeable Dr. and
- 8:03companion with some depths. You know, we haven't really done
- 8:06that before, have we? With layers.
- 8:11Oh, it comes that lizard. No, I'm a bit ahead of you.
- 8:15Hang on. Let me go back 10 seconds.
- 8:17Here we go. They were shrouded.
- 8:21Arundel's obviously very famous for his lizards.
- 8:25I've heard that, yeah, I've encountered a lizard or two in
- 8:29Arundel. The Doctor knows what he's doing
- 8:33with those knobs. Doesn't.
- 8:35He You've accounted a knob or two in Arundel.
- 8:39Look at those ships. Look.
- 8:41They look like a bunch of egg boxes with lights.
- 8:45The greatest cyber. Army ever amassed?
- 8:48Yeah, they're not quite. They're not quite the Dalek
- 8:51ships, are they? But.
- 8:53Dalek ship that comes into shot in the pre title sequence of
- 8:56Remembrance of the Daleks. I love that bit.
- 9:00Amazing. It was like when.
- 9:02We were like, what happened between seasons?
- 9:04How have we? Gone from that to this.
- 9:07How have we gone from Goodnight Teddy to?
- 9:11Our most basic promised land that.
- 9:18Yet you risk your life to save me.
- 9:20Why? I do not live in the world of
- 9:23what should it's. It's such a shame because
- 9:29clearly there was a there was a possibility here that this could
- 9:34have been a whole new, a whole new life for Lady Payne.
- 9:38For she could have settled down with all semi with Richard on
- 9:43the outskirts of Windsor. She could have opened her own
- 9:45tea room, the Lady Payne for tea room.
- 9:48She could have forgotten plans of universal conquest and
- 9:50revealing the secrets of the old times.
- 9:52And she could have had a very happy life, I feel.
- 9:57He's a good man, you know, But but she is evil.
- 10:02She managed to make Evil have about 10 syllables there.
- 10:05Did you know it's evil? Evil from the dawn of time.
- 10:13The beginning too fast is only gone.
- 10:16And evil that a space. The universe is torn.
- 10:20I'll come in with the lines. Now it's gone.
- 10:23Oh yeah, look at his headphones on in the background.
- 10:26Anton. Difference like what is going
- 10:28on, As long as long as they can pick up Wimbledon, I don't care.
- 10:33But like, we've missed out the whole reason why he's wearing
- 10:36those in this in this short Reddit, that blooming High 5
- 10:41looks like it weighs a ton, so he'll just probably like, got
- 10:44back ache from running around there.
- 10:46This whole sequence, right where they come in and he's like, you
- 10:49know, a legal move, but checkmate.
- 10:51I think it's one of the best ever. 7th and Ace scenes are one
- 10:56of the worst ever Cybermen scenes go.
- 10:58Figure it's like this, but I I do think in this scene the
- 11:02Cyberman just looked beautifully lit and dark, sort of shot from
- 11:07below and that sort of candlelight picking out the sort
- 11:11of silver details on their faces.
- 11:13It's really quite effective. But yeah, they are a bit
- 11:15rubbish. Ace replies by neatly castling
- 11:19with the bow. Give me the bow.
- 11:23Doctor supports combination Gabby.
- 11:24Take the ball from him. Kill him.
- 11:31Yeah, this is one really needed. When the boy gets to do tricks
- 11:35he's brilliant. Yes, it's It's just a shame that
- 11:39it was. It looked like it needed about
- 11:42three more goes at rehearsing it before they shot it but.
- 11:46That's most of the story. If I want, it's oh, here she is.
- 11:49This is really creepy. Do you not think this is like
- 11:52that? That face is just like.
- 11:55Yeah. And kef KEF music rises.
- 11:58Up now it's like, oh, that's just eerie do.
- 12:04You think of Kef's music? It's I I yeah.
- 12:16You summed it up with one word there.
- 12:18Yeah. It's not.
- 12:20It's not. It's it's hard because I don't
- 12:23think it's objectively very good, but I really struggle to
- 12:26think how I really struggle to imagine these stories without
- 12:31it. They're so they're so integral
- 12:32to like the style of them that is kind of.
- 12:36Do you know what we're so used to hearing like this?
- 12:40This music from when we were children?
- 12:43Yeah. I'm not sure you can be
- 12:44objective about it anymore, no. And I know that.
- 12:48I know that objectively, the Sylvester McCoy title music
- 12:52isn't as good as the Peter Howell version, but I still love
- 12:57that kind of. And I love the middle 8 being in
- 13:01the in the opening as well. That's such a half hearted game.
- 13:07Yeah, have some gold dust. Oh, you bitch this.
- 13:14Relationship is over, no more. Gliding around you can.
- 13:20Oh my God. When I.
- 13:21Do when they say split up, imagine it'd be so fucking catty
- 13:24they'll have warring TikTok accounts.
- 13:26Will. They showing that he's the
- 13:30camper. No, he's the camper.
- 13:35Why have we popped back to Lady Painful Study again?
- 13:39This is this is a bit weird. This is the Doctor playing
- 13:43chess, presumably with Fenrik in the background as well because
- 13:45someone's like moving the chess pieces while he's in the future.
- 13:52What's really going Doctor? She's got flower child's earring
- 13:57on a jacket there. Before meeting her.
- 13:59That's amazing. Wimey I was OK, yeah.
- 14:04Andrew Carmel said something really interesting.
- 14:06I was listening to an interview with him earlier and he was
- 14:09saying about how it's so lazy to split up the Doctor and the
- 14:13Companion and just have two opposing Peril storylines, and
- 14:16it's so much more interesting to keep them together and build up
- 14:19that relationship. They really did that in this
- 14:22era, didn't they? They did.
- 14:23Look, I think there's something to be said for that.
- 14:25I mean, I think you'd probably want to do both, right?
- 14:26Because actually there's it's quite nice in how like when
- 14:31Russell does those stories where Rose infiltrates Torchwood, for
- 14:35example, and has to pretend to be the Doctor.
- 14:38It's quite nice. Sometimes when you separate
- 14:40them, I don't think it's quite as straightforward as like
- 14:42either or. But yeah, I, I it is nice that
- 14:46they get chance to have a relationship because quite
- 14:49often, quite often you don't, you didn't get that necessarily.
- 14:56I feel, I feel like in the 80s they're just caricatures.
- 14:58They're not really characters, are they?
- 15:01I think. I think the best, the best
- 15:03Doctor Who for me is the ones where the regulars feel like a
- 15:08real feel, like a real team and you really like them as a a
- 15:12pair. So I I really like, but I really
- 15:15like the 3rd Doctor and Sarah Jane.
- 15:17I think they're they're great. Together.
- 15:18Me too. Well, we get to happen, right?
- 15:20Don't worry, I get I I get the criticisms of season 11.
- 15:23But I just think, Kurt, we and Slayton are so good together
- 15:26that. In you go.
- 15:31And they really put a lot of effort into making that
- 15:33relationship work. So like in the Invasion of the
- 15:35Dinosaurs, the first episode of that, like the effort that
- 15:37they're putting, they're both putting into making it work.
- 15:40Oh, get over yourself. So it's season 11.
- 15:43Yes, it's the fag end of Pertwee, but he's still finding
- 15:46new things to do and like these two, finding new things to do.
- 15:49So this is all on. Oh, so I think that's really, I
- 15:53know it's like just a cheap effect and it's just like moving
- 15:56around. But I still think it's there's
- 15:59something really otherworldly about it.
- 16:01Ham time would have killed for an effect like that, yes.
- 16:06Oh, this? Is great, though now it's
- 16:07actually a person inside the costume, the way it just sort of
- 16:10leans over and goes, oh, thank you.
- 16:14Oh, here we go, right? Come on, you be.
- 16:17You be lady painful. I'll be Mrs. Remington.
- 16:19All right far. No, I just came over from
- 16:24London. Oh wait, you're busy.
- 16:29Actually, the traffic was pretty reasonable.
- 16:32I laughed about. Let's see, 40 minutes ago.
- 16:38Folks from the South are never in a hurry.
- 16:43As a matter of fact, I'm here on a visit, checking out my roots.
- 16:48Oh no, she doesn't say anything in this scene.
- 16:51I love Rich. Just having to make awkward
- 16:52conversation. I'm so sorry.
- 16:55You'll have sorry to say in the next bit through that scene,
- 16:59listeners. I was just like simpering madly.
- 17:01That's what I normally do to be honest.
- 17:05I could see your simpering face as well.
- 17:07You know it is only my present form.
- 17:11I have had others which would horrify you.
- 17:13Yeah, you like the truth, Love. The Merca.
- 17:17The Loch Ness Monster Crow. I am whatever I am made to be.
- 17:26Look at that expressions, plastic face.
- 17:30I think that's a good line, though.
- 17:31She called me Nemesis. So I'm retribution.
- 17:33That's a good sign. Oh, here we go.
- 17:36Well, my family came from around here.
- 17:39I traced them all the way back to the 1600s.
- 17:45All things will soon be mine. I.
- 17:48Guess they will, honey. Time, past, present, and future,
- 17:55power invincible. Oh God, like I wait for the days
- 18:03where it's my favorite. You did that whole thing.
- 18:06Oh man. When I was 8, this was the
- 18:08coolest thing ever. I'd taken them.
- 18:09I just, I think this is so this is just like really like again,
- 18:13it's not the best directed thing but it's got a bit of energy
- 18:17and. It's got some pace, doesn't it?
- 18:20Yeah, this is all under the Millennium Dome.
- 18:23Now destroy the human female. Find and destroy her, right?
- 18:32Go on, heavens. Virginia is heaven, if you ask
- 18:36me. My family owns a little lamb
- 18:39there. These two own a little lamb
- 18:41around here, too. The Remingtons of Remington
- 18:43Grange. And there's thieves and
- 18:47swindlers all. You study history.
- 18:51Dorothea Remington did bribe away my cook.
- 18:55Oh. Now let me see.
- 18:57Yes, there was a Dorothea. She died in 1620.
- 19:03One, There's a slow poison. This is unbelievable.
- 19:10Many found it so. Here I am driving around and
- 19:14I'll pick up someone who's. Researched my family tree.
- 19:19We ride to Destiny. We surely do, honey.
- 19:24We surely do. Fuck.
- 19:32Cut last suede of the plot to fit the running time.
- 19:34But they've kept all this if. The BFI don't hire us to do that
- 19:38now after this goes out. Well, they're mad.
- 19:43Oh Jesus, I feel like they. That's of some sort of peace
- 19:46laden garage in Brighton. She's running through there,
- 19:50Piss maiden. It's laden, given a couple of
- 19:54such jobs in garages, you know, Thought that was your thought.
- 19:59That was your online name. Piss maiden.
- 20:02Don't let me off, all right? Have a swig piss.
- 20:09Maiden. Actually, do you know I once had
- 20:15a one night stand with no. I'll tell you later, all right.
- 20:22And. That cyber man coming up the
- 20:24stairs is really blooming stairs.
- 20:27Brilliant. And the whole bit up on the
- 20:28gantry where the cameras sort of going is weird around her.
- 20:32Unfortunately, he does bump into the gantry at one point.
- 20:36Plumbing to his death. But yeah, apart from that, it
- 20:39was in the service of Doctor Who, you know.
- 20:41Yeah, look, look at all this. She's up here.
- 20:45I just think that's a a creepy, nice, creepy location.
- 20:50You know, not for us. The Overlits Flats of Sea Base
- 20:544. No, this is what Sea Base Four
- 20:57should have looked like. Exactly.
- 20:59Imagine the MERCA shuffling down there.
- 21:03Even paint smears all over the place.
- 21:05I love, I don't know why I love shots of the tardish from above
- 21:08like that. Yes, you don't get them very
- 21:11often and. Look at the look at the shadow
- 21:13on her face as well. We detected only one piece of
- 21:17gold, correct? So he'll be next and he'll be
- 21:22lucky. Sorry, we're just quoting.
- 21:25The whole thing. Now let's face it guys.
- 21:28You're not here for the Coventry.
- 21:29You're here for the quotes for this one.
- 21:33And watch the way he wants. He literally plummets down and
- 21:36explodes on the floor. That does look a bit like that
- 21:42Cyberman in Tomb With a Cyberman, though.
- 21:48Oh, this side man is so. Fucking stupid now he literally
- 21:51says to him. Wow, you know I'd arranged for
- 21:53it to take off at a pre arranged time.
- 21:55By the way, Ace, what is the time he's given him two fucking
- 21:58warnings and he still steps in front of the flames.
- 22:01Oh, never. Without further One and Joe, you
- 22:07sound like Hamish Wilson. Oh, here we go.
- 22:14Oh, that's right, we're going to be doing the double bluff,
- 22:16aren't we? The Remembrance of the Daleks
- 22:18Bluff. Oh, I love this.
- 22:20You will need me in the future then.
- 22:23I hope not, no. Of this I will have my freedom,
- 22:27not. Yet yet.
- 22:30I told you when? Oh, things are still perfect.
- 22:35Perfect. So that's oh, what a line.
- 22:38That sprung another 15 new adventures.
- 22:41Into. That's such a line, isn't it?
- 22:43That's lovely. Oh, I love this.
- 22:46The way Lady pay for it just starts ranting her way into the
- 22:49silo, didn't she? All things will be mine, yes.
- 22:55Mrs. Remington's just like, pulled up outside.
- 22:57I reckon she's still outside in the limo, waiting for her to
- 23:00come back. They.
- 23:00Cut the seat. Why's she gone in there?
- 23:03Why's she gone in there? Dirty old warehouse.
- 23:06Thank God I was. Doing her quotes and not you,
- 23:08Jason, and beat the Deep South. She says in the South.
- 23:14You never rush. In we shall do.
- 23:19Honey, we shall do declare Miss Scarlett.
- 23:22But don't you remember in this extended version, there's a shot
- 23:25of her outside the limo with her binoculars and she sees the
- 23:28nemesis. Go up into the sky and she goes,
- 23:31oh oh, it was. Worthless, once that lovely lady
- 23:38doing inside that. No, the Old Warehouse.
- 23:41Go take a look, do. You think they could have done a
- 23:48sitcom Painful and Remington. I I can't imagine why they
- 23:53didn't fuck Jago and Lightfoot. That should have been the big
- 23:56finish off Painful and Remington volume 13 with Colin Baker as
- 24:09the 6th Doctor. Louise Jameson as Leila Oh.
- 24:16I've lost you. Hello.
- 24:43I don't know what happened there.
- 24:46Big big finish. Like pulled the thing.
- 24:51Look where? Where am I?
- 24:52Briggs is like, I'm sick of that fucking J4, Matt.
- 24:55Michael taking the piss out of me mean?
- 25:00All the time. Do you know you hurt my
- 25:04feelings? I'm at 70 put.
- 25:07My heart and soul into no, he never did, not once.
- 25:11All right. Yes.
- 25:12He got a heart, or so he not returned to tell us.
- 25:17I bet 1705 I paused it there. OK.
- 25:21It's the Doctor, Ace and DE Flores.
- 25:23He's holding the bow. I am going to let me just rewind
- 25:28it to that pause mid laugh. It was great.
- 25:31Freeze. Right.
- 25:34I'm, I'm, I'm ready. OK, 543.
- 25:40Well, Remington and painful coming to ITVX soon.
- 25:46We love stories. We surely do.
- 25:51We ride Destiny. Oh, here she comes.
- 25:56Look. All power, time, space, the
- 26:01world. She's just lost all semblance of
- 26:08sanity now, hasn't she? She she's gone absolutely nuts.
- 26:12It's kind of it's kind of like, why, why has she gone so mad?
- 26:15There's no. I think that that's a flaw in
- 26:18the script is that there's no single moment that sends her
- 26:21nuts, unless it is like seeing her grave and realising her
- 26:26immortality, but. You think that's the one floor
- 26:29in this script? Single the sole floor in this.
- 26:35He has but a porn in a game of my own making.
- 26:38I love the way that a sport are your bag.
- 26:41Listen to me, your old bag. I swear I was using aces insults
- 26:46throughout my entire You may have chauvinist Bill.
- 26:51Have you? Never wondered where he came
- 26:53from. Who is he?
- 26:56Nobody knows. The Doctor is.
- 27:00Except me. Look at look at his face.
- 27:08I wanted to just turn around and go, Oh, he's God, isn't he?
- 27:13JM TS like you can't slap you shaved your.
- 27:19Fucking old bits. And I love the fact that Time
- 27:27Man just goes the secrets of the time Laws mean nothing to us.
- 27:33Except in every other story, But not this one.
- 27:35I I love. I love that the sight of the
- 27:37cyber man and the doctor are just standing there going, Phew,
- 27:40what a loony. While she's they're both, like,
- 27:43united in like, oh, she's nuts, isn't she?
- 27:46This lady. Lady Fruitcake.
- 27:49I love this, but I. Love that.
- 27:52Tell them I love that. I love that.
- 27:56Like, tell them. See if I can.
- 27:58She's doing it. She's doing the Russell Davis
- 27:59thing. The old time, the time of chaos.
- 28:01It's enough. It's enough.
- 28:04That's all you need. We don't.
- 28:06Need Cat's Cradle times Crucible to explain to us what the old
- 28:10time and the time of Chaos was. This is the bit that drives it
- 28:14nuts. Thank you for coming to the 20th
- 28:16century. And bring me the arrow.
- 28:20And she goes what? I'm surprised the cyber leader
- 28:31is as easily. Duped as he is.
- 28:35He. Yeah, he's.
- 28:38Do you understand the cyber leaders instructions?
- 28:45OK, sophildre trying to give all this madness and wedding do it
- 28:50doctor. Don't surrender.
- 28:52And then they're like, pull out this, this, this new Mondas
- 28:55thing here it's like, what the fuck?
- 28:56Where did all this come from? The the Cybermen are just sort
- 29:00of in this, aren't they? They don't really.
- 29:02There's no, not really any place for them.
- 29:04It would be much. Hey, we're going to build the
- 29:06new Mondas. They're always trying to build
- 29:10the new Mondas. Honest to God, this reminds me
- 29:14of that book, The Gallifrey Chronicles.
- 29:15We're going to build the new Gallifrey just in time for Rusty
- 29:19Davis to blow it up again. Oh, there she goes.
- 29:22She's lying in with the statue. I mean, there's only one way She
- 29:24was never going to go. It was like Soul Deed screaming
- 29:27her head off. Oh, she's been absorbed.
- 29:31And then the music now goes, She's fucking up now I.
- 29:35Mean look. At this fucking dirigible going?
- 29:40Out, a lot of Harry sort of wobbles around.
- 29:45It goes. Mrs. Remington's like opera
- 29:49glasses. I never do declare.
- 29:56It's the most exciting thing I've ever seen.
- 30:01Dolores close go. Where's my fucking jewels?
- 30:03I've left them on the side of the road.
- 30:07Oh my God. Jewels around JM two you got you
- 30:12got soon coming, all right. They're still there, I bet,
- 30:18Yeah. I bet.
- 30:18JT was sweating, though, when that car was going back.
- 30:21God yeah, you. Think it was done better in
- 30:25Resent Remembrance or Silver Nemesis?
- 30:27Do you reckon he like pinched some of the jewels and replaced
- 30:30them with paste, Had a little tiara?
- 30:34He used to wear it around the house to do the do the washing
- 30:36up. Oh my God, you can imagine that.
- 30:38Can't you wear a pair of rubber gloves on?
- 30:43I have a southern bill. I do declare and Gary downs like
- 30:46yes, of course you are darling. Do you want to meet the two?
- 30:48The dryer? I think you're one of our
- 30:50numbers from Follies. There Garrett.
- 30:54And then he puts the black glove on and just moves the Richard
- 30:57Herndon figure into position. It's very hard to know because
- 31:00Richard has been sort of suggested that he's a bit of a
- 31:03fug and the. Doctor.
- 31:05Just takes him back and goes there.
- 31:06I'm with your life, young Richard.
- 31:08Do you know? He he.
- 31:10He. He's.
- 31:11Fairly harmless. He hasn't actually killed
- 31:13anyone. I'd be like the bit where it's
- 31:15just to the to the two skinheads.
- 31:17What is it? Money.
- 31:19See you. They set the Nemesis off into
- 31:23space to draw the serving so you can finish them off.
- 31:26They suppose I did. How clever off me.
- 31:29Just like you nailed the Daleks. Don't point out the fucking
- 31:32plot's the same. That's the last.
- 31:37Thing you should be doing just like we did three weeks ago you.
- 31:42Haven't answered, Joe. We have none of this jizz where
- 31:46of which you speak, Doctor. None of this jizz.
- 31:51We have none of this jizz of what you speak, this man too.
- 31:55Much fapping, yeah. That's.
- 32:02Yeah, what? Who are you?
- 32:14Oh, fuck me. That was glorious.
- 32:15Oh my dear Joe, you have been naive.
- 32:20So you escaped from Zarafast, did you?
- 32:23Or was it Castro Valva. Or was it San?
- 32:30There should have been a line in the news.
- 32:33So you escaped from Auschwitz Russell to.
- 32:43BBC Like, no, you can't say that.
- 32:54Oh, we've been inappropriate in so many ways in this Coventry
- 32:57and this. Don't get me cancelled.
- 32:58Nothing will. Oh oh God, Oh my.
- 33:05I'll just pick noise. Now look, everybody, I don't
- 33:15wish to alarm you. There is some pretty weird shit
- 33:20going on. No.
- 33:22You and I. Oh, now, fucking puff, it's the
- 33:25end of the day. It's 11:00, and we've got to
- 33:27find three reasons, each just three reasons of the millions to
- 33:31recommend silver nemesis. Wow I think the first one is
- 33:39Lady Paine for just amazing just such a such a such a performance
- 33:49you get the sense that Fiona Walker really enjoyed doing and
- 33:55just brings the whole thing up a level because if if if it being
- 34:00like. Anton and the Cyberman, It would
- 34:03have been a bit. She really gives it what it
- 34:06needs to to work as a story. It's like halls of nightmare
- 34:11without sold deed. What would be the point they
- 34:18they elevate it in? Not just campness, but
- 34:21melodrama. You know everything.
- 34:23Yeah. OK, well then my first thing is
- 34:26going to be, because I'm say very mean things about I didn't
- 34:28finish big, so I'm going to say. The Doctrine Ace or Sylvester
- 34:33McCoy and Schofieldrid and they're beautifully natural
- 34:36chemistry, which is instant. The 2nd letter together in
- 34:39Dragon Fire is instant in a way that and I do like 7 and Mel,
- 34:44but it's just different. It is.
- 34:47It's natural. I I can't explain it.
- 34:49It's like they've been friends for years.
- 34:51Yeah, you're spot on and I think it just brings the story again.
- 34:57It's like something that just brings it to life.
- 34:59Like you can you can forgive season 17 a lot because the 4th
- 35:03doctrine Romana just when they're whenever they're on
- 35:05screen together, the chemistry and the the relationship just
- 35:10brings it to life. And I think Sylvester and and
- 35:13Sophie are the same. Yeah, we're back to you.
- 35:19I think the second one is there's just a lot of stuff
- 35:23going on, so it's never. It's never boring.
- 35:30There's no sort of dull bits. It's not like obsessed with a
- 35:34fairly plodding plot about rebels versus the government or
- 35:40whatever. It's just stuff getting chucked
- 35:43at you for basically 75 minutes. And some of it sticks, some of
- 35:48it doesn't. But if you don't like a bit of
- 35:50it, something different is going to come along in like a minute.
- 35:54And it's just like stuff from left field, like the whole
- 35:57Dorothy Remington. Like, where did that come from?
- 36:01Bonkers. It's utterly bonkers pointing in
- 36:03our security guards. You know all of this round us.
- 36:06But you know what? There's so much fun and
- 36:08enjoyment in here. This script would be
- 36:10inconceivable in the Eric Sayward era, wouldn't it?
- 36:13Oh God, yeah. It's just it's it's just fun
- 36:18it's And that the older I get that's the more.
- 36:22That I want from Doctor Who, I think when I was sort of 17 and
- 36:27like was dissing the Five Doctors because it's just like
- 36:30party pieces and it's not a serious story.
- 36:33And surely Mortaring Undead and Terminus and much more.
- 36:40Eyebrow. Much more, Yes.
- 36:42Yeah, science fiction in them. And you just like I kind of look
- 36:45back on that now, God. What was I thinking exactly?
- 36:53OK, well then my second is going to be, oh, do you know what?
- 36:57I've got to say it because it's just burned into my brain.
- 37:01Kev Mccullough's music, I know it's terrible.
- 37:03I know objectively it's terrible.
- 37:06But I listened to these stories when I was young.
- 37:08That music away got me going. It got me excited.
- 37:14You know the bit where Ace is, the side man's firing at her in
- 37:17the silo and she does the coin, the the scenes of the spaceship
- 37:22going through the woods, all the music.
- 37:24It's like it's disco music, but it's just driving a pace.
- 37:28And I love it. I unapologetically love Get
- 37:32Mccullough's Music Shoot Me. I think it's it's, yeah.
- 37:41No, I I I said earlier on I think you can't this era, if you
- 37:47took Caf's music out and you've got Mark Ayers to rescore the
- 37:50whole thing, it will probably be technically better.
- 37:53But you'd lose so much of what makes the era the era.
- 37:58It'd be like removing all of that kind of electronic music
- 38:02from the Sea Devils and the Silurian type.
- 38:06Stuff you just, it's so. Because they took away Kev
- 38:10Mcculloch's score of Sharda and Marquez did a score for the
- 38:14latest version and it is a great score.
- 38:17The Marquez one. I think it's a a beautiful
- 38:19tribute to Dudley Simpson. I watched the mark the Kev
- 38:24McCulloch one when I was younger, so I just feel like it
- 38:27should be going da da da da da da even though I.
- 38:33Know it's terrible music. Back to you.
- 38:39I think the other, the other thing and again is it's a bit
- 38:42like Keff's music. It's the effect.
- 38:45I think the the one that really stands out for me is how eerie
- 38:50the Nemesis is. There's loads of the type
- 38:54Bertie, Bassett villains and there's like quite memorable
- 38:58monsters. The Destroyers looks great.
- 39:00They've got some neat prosthetics going on.
- 39:03The cheater people at Fun but. There's something just very
- 39:07spooky about the nemesis. Like both when it's like inside
- 39:11the sort of cobwebs in the coffin and you see the shape
- 39:14moving around, sort of blank plastic face looking like a lot
- 39:18of 1970s companions do today. To be honest, with that sort of
- 39:22blank expression as plastic face, you are such a bad man.
- 39:28And and then when it's. It's sort of fully restored and
- 39:33it just sort of rises up and it's just this glowing thing
- 39:37that just sort of floats and the doctor going things are still
- 39:41imperfect. It's just like it just has a
- 39:44weirdness to it and a kind of you really believe that it is
- 39:48otherworldly and that has secrets and it's even though you
- 39:54don't actually see it do anything particularly amazing,
- 39:57just the nature of of how it's presented is.
- 40:03I think is really, really powerful.
- 40:06My last one, then I'm going to say hints and Whispers, and it's
- 40:10why I think Andrew Can't Melt. I can't believe I'm going to say
- 40:14this. It's why I think Andrew Can't
- 40:17Melt understands Doctor Who better than Steven Moffat and
- 40:20Chris Chipnall. Because they just want to give
- 40:23you too much. They want to give you a 15
- 40:26minute PowerPoint presentation about how the doctor was found
- 40:29at some mystical gateway. They want to give you the time
- 40:32war and they want to give you the doctor's, you know,
- 40:36childhood barn and his nanny and all their stuff that completely.
- 40:40I know it's trying to add layers but it completely destroys the
- 40:42mystery of the carrier whereas. Why would you just entice you?
- 40:48Yeah, why? Why would you go to all of the
- 40:51effort of reintroducing mystery just to then answer all of the
- 40:54mysteries, then have to reintroduce more mystery?
- 40:57That's that's that's always my problem with, like, the Timeless
- 41:00Children stuff is that a lot of the time you just can't let it
- 41:04lie. It's not it's not like a
- 41:07mystery. It's like just a long
- 41:09explanation that's not particularly interesting, and
- 41:12then you have to do something different to reintroduce even
- 41:15more mystery. So there the Doctor just ends up
- 41:18being like a ridiculous collection of every kind of
- 41:22hero, myth slash Marvel origin story you can think of, because
- 41:26they've just had to, like, layer more and more and more on every.
- 41:30Time. I think you can go too far with
- 41:32the mystery as well. And that's Morphus problem.
- 41:34All this Doctor Who. Doctor Who, the first question
- 41:38asked and all of this bullshit, and we don't need it spelled out
- 41:41to us by that. You know, Carmel just gives you
- 41:45hints and whistles like Rusty Davis.
- 41:47You know enough for you to grab hold of and let your imagination
- 41:50do the rest. Yeah, I agree.
- 41:53Unfortunately, Paul Kamal and Kate Ormond and all that bunch
- 41:57were watching. And then we.
- 41:59I know I thought I constantly ripped the new adventures.
- 42:02I realise it was a very innovative experimental time for
- 42:06Doctor Who and inspired much of what came later actually.
- 42:10But yeah, it certainly won't. If anything, the New Adventures
- 42:14proved that it works. Yeah, I I I'm sort of with you
- 42:20on that. I think Long Barrow is, I think
- 42:24it's nicely written by Mark Platt but it's so it's just
- 42:30boring isn't it. So the Doctor's just he's
- 42:33actually. Around this house, he's actually
- 42:36slightly different Time Lord. OK, so he's not the Time Lord
- 42:41that we thought he was, but he is.
- 42:43But he's also a different Time Lord as well.
- 42:45OK, why do I care? In fact, you know what?
- 42:51I think I'm going to go completely away from children.
- 42:54This is now, but I'm actually doing a recording on this
- 42:57tomorrow, so which is why it's in my mind.
- 42:59A better reinterpretation of the Doctor is in Justin Richards The
- 43:03Burning, where they take away everything the series relies on,
- 43:07which is the TARDIS, the continuity and the companions,
- 43:10and just has the Doctor as this sort of slightly sinister, very
- 43:14mysterious figure that's got no memory of his past.
- 43:18And just a black cube in his pocket.
- 43:20Yeah, I, I, I saw you kind of talking about that on Twitter
- 43:31earlier. I haven't read The Burning for
- 43:33years. But yeah, you're spot on.
- 43:35It's it's quite a quite a powerful kind of reinvention,
- 43:42albeit I think that it's basically they knew Paul McGann
- 43:45was going to go and do Big Finish audios and they didn't
- 43:48know how he was going to do it. So they just had to head to
- 43:50their backs. But yeah, it's.
- 43:52It's. It's.
- 43:52So it still works. Yeah, it's still an old
- 43:56fashioned historical Horror Story as well.
- 43:58So it's totally Doctor Who. Yes.
- 44:00Anyway, Silver Nemesis. Absolutely glorious.
- 44:05Now, Matt, you and I, we talked about Silver Nemesis and someone
- 44:08else. What was it?
- 44:10Was it Lamos Rising? Lamos rising?
- 44:13Yeah. That's right.
- 44:15Well, that's where we're heading next.
- 44:16Now, I don't know anything about this.
- 44:17I've never seen it. I've never seen.
- 44:21It I think it's a sequel to The Demons.
- 44:23At least I hope so. The sequel to The Demons and
- 44:25Downtime. The the the double sequel that
- 44:29the world was crying out for. Is it starring Damaris?
- 44:34It's not. It stars Miles Richardson and
- 44:38Beverly. Prestige casting there.
- 44:43We're in good hands, yeah. And Azal.
- 44:48I. Can only dread to see how that's
- 44:50realised but. You're off on your holidays
- 44:55tomorrow. You give time to do this.
- 44:57I can only say thank you so much because throughout the entirety
- 45:01of that I just basically laughed.
- 45:05Thank you, Joe.
