- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: What's up guys?
- 0:01[SPEAKER_00]: Guy here.
- 0:02[SPEAKER_00]: It is Tuesday afternoon.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_00]: Just got back from Niners.
- 0:06[SPEAKER_00]: I got an email from a listener.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_00]: They may Eric.
- 0:08[SPEAKER_00]: And only wrote with Guy.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to talk about it.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: Or is it off limits?
- 0:12[SPEAKER_00]: Eric.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_00]: Which I appreciate it because it felt like a sincere question, not a goating one.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I've never in the year that I've been a part of the Niners broadcast team been told that there are any things off limits.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_00]: the opposite when I was hired last year, I was told basically just do whatever you normally do.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, in a way, talking about Jed York's arrest, what I normally, you know, how would I do it normally?
- 0:39[SPEAKER_00]: The track record for me is clear, team stuff that I think is fun, generally what we do here on the show.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_00]: But I also couldn't, you know, come on here and be like, nine years need a left guard.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_00]: and not acknowledge the story, or explain my feelings to you.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone's talking about it.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: It's no denying that, right?
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: Um, you know, the way I've always kind of thought about the role is like Greg Poppett doing a radio show and calling games, which by the way, I don't know if you saw him on NBC sports with Matt Meoko and Jennifer Lee Chan on their podcast, Ask Poppett.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: That second is coming back Greg said publicly, he is doing his breathing exercises and trying to come back to the booth for, uh, Dolphins, hom opener for the Dolphins hom opener.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_00]: which is September 20th, which if he does that, I'll be there too.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't people have asked me that a few times.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of times actually, not everyone has heard the explanation.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: So if Greg's there, then I'll be also in the field or in the booth or what are I'll be on the broadcast team that they do.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_00]: So that's always the case.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: That's why when people have said, like, hey, voice the nighters, like, no, no, no, Greg's the voice the nighters.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_00]: I'm feeling in for him, and if Greg comes back,
- 1:53[SPEAKER_00]: that I'm still there.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_00]: That's what's different this year as I'm still part of that broadcast team, even if I'm not calling the game.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, that's a separate thing, but I just thought of that as we were talking about this.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_00]: But I've thought about it like, hey, doing this is no different than for years so many team broadcasters did radio shows.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_00]: and to varying degrees of success.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: To me like two of the most successful are Greg, Michael K., who does the Yankees as well.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and I know there was like the tipping point with the Raider several years ago when Mark Davis interviewed Mike Shanahan, who was
- 2:29[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he and Al had big beef and Greg's Greg was tight without they have said that Al'd be rolling over it is great or something like that.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: And that was, you know, the beginning of the end there, you know, in Michael K's as I said done her for years.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_00]: And I think for both of them like it adds.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: not that the Yankees or Niners need need those guys to add legitimacy, but if you think it adds credibility when you have somebody who the audience feels like, yeah, these guys just they can talk about it and do that and they have enough equity that no one's you know, silencing them or telling them
- 3:04[SPEAKER_00]: what they're capable of.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_00]: I thought today, Calshanna Han set a tone.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't have a press conference and say, I'll refer you to the statement from yesterday about the arrest.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't know what to expect from him.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: I think in hindsight, that's probably what I should have expected is him to talk the way he talked today if he didn't see it.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: But I was reminded again today.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: The cow could just be left to handle stuff and share his thoughts.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: He's good at it.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he's not going to have obviously some big take on it wasn't some long drawn-out statement, but it was simple.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: It was sincere.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_00]: It was another example of his value to the organization.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_00]: I also think, you know, if he was in the second year,
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: It'd be a little bit different.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_00]: He's been here about 10 years.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_00]: This is 10th year.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_00]: He has such a good relationship, a long standing relationship with Jed york.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_00]: They know each other really well.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: So Kyle's, you know, not afraid of stepping on toes or saying the wrong thing.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: I think John Lynch, of course, is the same.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_00]: But it's good when you're head coach who would talk anyway, can just handle it.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: Like you don't have to bring in John Lynch to address it and then be up there for 10 more minutes after he set his piece and deflect.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not worried about somebody looking over my shoulder, but that's more because Jeds arrest isn't the type of story.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_00]: I would do a 20-minute video on or have a big take on anyway.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure it's miserable for them.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: And I can't imagine.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think you think about it, imagining it.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: What it would be like.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: And it forces me to think about, the same things it would force all of us to think about, like, how do I publicly re-emerge
- 4:44[SPEAKER_00]: Do I think it has and much of effect on the team or the franchise?
- 4:48[SPEAKER_00]: No, because he was not very out front lately anyway.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we don't get promoted to CEO, which was his title previously.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: Lynch and Shannon had a bit in charge.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: He stays out of there here anywhere.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, you know, I thought a lot that last 24 hours about how he must feel.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: I was family feels and I think probably, like all of you, how would you feel about the way your family feels?
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: So like all of that stuff, it's very human.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: it's hard to separate from.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_00]: I think in my younger days, and I was never, I would never, I don't think, I know be described as a loose cannon, but I definitely think in an effort to be funnier, clever over the years, I'd been...
- 5:28[SPEAKER_00]: many, many times, many, like, too many time and like just to kind of think not that anyone would say something to me, but flip it, like really flip it and I'd hear it and go like, oh, that's kind of flip it and it's not sincere, like, you know, be a sincere person.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, early on doing radio, I feel like I'm just talking to a voice, you sit into a mic, you're trying to be clever, you know, you're trying to be funny or whatever, and this stuff doesn't go anywhere, and then you realize it does go somewhere, at which is fine, you want it to, if it's going nowhere, then what's the point of doing it?
- 6:06[SPEAKER_00]: But you're going to walk into the locker room, and the people you're covering, I think your expectation, your standard for them is they got to be a grown-up.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_00]: you just have to be able to spend what you say.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: And that for me was like, when I would do, like the Oakland A's pre-imposed game show back in the day, I'm gonna go and clap out every day.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_00]: So if I can defend it, say to somebody's face, it's pretty easy, but we'll follow, I didn't always follow it because, you know, like I said, I was flipping a lot.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_00]: And I always felt like, you know, I was in this middle ground where I don't, I've said for years, I'm not a journalist.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_00]: Journalists follow a stricter standard.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_00]: But I also think, you know, somebody who took, you know, journalism, law or whatever that class was, the standards of journalism, whatever it was in college, at Fresno State.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: I, even if you're not a journalist, there are some standards to truth that I think it's everyone's job to understand and respect.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: If you're gonna be talking to a lot of people,
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: But that's a digression.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: That stuff doesn't really apply here.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's just part of where I've been.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_00]: Now I'm doing this, right?
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: And independent YouTube show and podcast.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: And working for the 49ers is one of the team broadcasters.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: And so, you know, when you take that job, I was aware, I don't think it changes what I do here.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: What I've done here is the same.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: But it could change the perception.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: So I think I'm okay at the job.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's to understand how do you serve both audiences.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_00]: I owe you something, you expect honesty, right?
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: Like there are advantages to being with the team.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_00]: There are things you see, exit, well, advantages, yeah.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_00]: But like you get access to things that don't belong on the show because that's the way I got, if I found something out over here, like, okay, I could say that, I can break that news.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_00]: But if I found it out over here on the team plane or in the hallway, and that that I've cared much about breaking news anyway.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, that's part of the navigation.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_00]: Didn't expect to navigate this.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_00]: But that is the deal.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be signed up for.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_00]: So what does it mean?
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: Like what is the situation that the 49ers that J. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E. E.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_00]: Kyle Shanahan continuing to coach the 49ers.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: John Lynch remaining as the GM in the president of football operations.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: Alguido's the CEO.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: You know, those things are critical.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_00]: Now, they were critical last week too.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_00]: Like we've seen over the last few years reports of big money offers to Shaman Kfei, to John Lynch to come back to TV.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_00]: I hope John's interested again soon, but doesn't seem like he will be.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_00]: But like those guys here remaining in place is was already critical remains very critical.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_00]: I'll get to something a few other things today.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_00]: But as for the story itself, I don't know.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_00]: I felt like when it came to doing a pod,
- 9:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, oh, I can't talk about this.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_00]: And of course the answer is no, I don't have to do anything.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, there's plenty of stories that happen and I skip them.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you know, but it's not like George Kittle was cleared for practice over the weekend.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't do a video on that.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_00]: But,
- 9:44[SPEAKER_00]: You know this so it's not though it wouldn't be the first time I didn't talk about something but of course You can't like it would get noticed differently rightfully you'd have the right to be like no one be like You know you didn't talk about George Kittles return Whatever there's like the cycle moves too quick There's a million videos about it, but I I also couldn't come back on and like at least not acknowledge it
- 10:07[SPEAKER_00]: Do I have some big take on it?
- 10:08[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you've reached this point in the video, the answer's like, not really.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_00]: So is it worth me saying anything?
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: Whatever, I don't know.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just glad I don't have to repeat it at the top of the hour and then tease it for the next three hours.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you know, I used to do in the radio days.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_00]: Before I get to some newsy stuff, well, football newsy stuff, I'll tell you how this video is brought to you by Volvo Cars Merin.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks to the sponsorship of Volvo Cars Merin, it got me and my family.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'd gorgeous Volvo XC-98 plug-in hybrid.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_00]: 30 plus 32 35 30 some thick smiles of electric range 32.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_00]: I think I got almost all the way down the Levi's stadium 580 this morning only on electric it's been a dream to drive it's beautiful the family safe the software.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_00]: I love it's great Go see Matt Gordon and his squad
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: at Volvo Cars Marin.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_00]: If you're thinking about a new or used Volvo, you've got to go see them or visit them online at Volvo CarsMarrin.com.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be a great experience.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_00]: No pressure.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: And you get to see some cool cars.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_00]: So go check it out.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: Some news.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_00]: Some notes I made.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_00]: Things that are flagged.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_00]: Not red flagged.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yellow flag maybe.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yellow flags of penalty.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_00]: Be aware of Mike Evans growing tightness.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_00]: Again, this time of year, you know, not going to play in the preseason game anyway.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_00]: Long flight coming up next week, need him to rest up, but I feel like it's that's different than the chargers when he had the ice on the ankle flag it.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_00]: Cowling growing was moving around on
- 11:57[SPEAKER_00]: But you just flag it to something to be aware of.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_00]: You'd love to just go three weeks with nothing, especially, you know, one thing before when you didn't think, well, now you get your kick returner.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: But instead of solving the problem now, because he's injured, then he returns the kick for the punch for the touch, and then you're like, that's the guy.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_00]: Well, what if you go off to Australia with him as your pot returner and then, you know, like he's feeling better tomorrow and you go to Australia and then three days into Australia, you're like, oh, he's not feeling great.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_00]: Actually, something happens.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_00]: And I'll Jordan walk into his back there and now Debo, God forbid, his back there.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't want to be back there.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_00]: Not great, Dominic Puni, back in the protocol.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_00]: So he was working on the side, but then he was feeling something, he was, remember he was dealing with the concussion.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_00]: And I just got a left guard problem.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_00]: They have a left guard problem.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_00]: If Puni's out then they also have a right guard problem.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, maybe that solves the left guard problem because, kind of, Colby, then place right guard, but, you know, they love, maybe Robert Jones is trying to get healthy.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, should be ready to roll by Australia, Kyle Shanahan said.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_00]: Carver Willis was getting basically all the reps that left guard today with the first team.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_00]: He's never played guard before in the in college He just played some now and then I felt these are rookie.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_00]: So it's it's just not great and
- 13:41[SPEAKER_00]: You know, if you're going to add somebody from the outside now, this is now the time.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_00]: This is definitely now the time.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_00]: Romero height.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_00]: Now, or I'm, you know, you just, I am not flagging my heavens with the groin tightness.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's probably okay.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_00]: Based on just the way these things typically go, but especially the way they when they use tightness.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: Something to be aware of.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_00]: Ramello height, ankle, something to be aware of.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: But here's what I'll say about Ramello height.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: I have felt like he probably could use a little rest.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, if you tell me his ankle is gonna be fine in a week and he's a little more rested.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe that's a glass half full.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_00]: That's a lot of guessing, right?
- 14:24[SPEAKER_00]: You wouldn't choose that.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_00]: But I've just, you know, the take here is not, don't worry about an ankle.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_00]: The take is more,
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: I felt like he could probably use a little rest.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I don't want to go so far as to say worn down.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_00]: You don't see enough.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_00]: I don't see enough having talked to him about it, haven't heard anybody say it.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not going to, like that's too much.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_00]: But he has not been, you know, making a bunch of plays.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_00]: And for a first training camp, maybe there's a lot of, you know, expanding a lot of energy, going through it for the first time.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_00]: There's not a lot of depth there.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe he's taken on a little more than guys.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_00]: Other, without Bosa, Keon White just came back.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe he's taking on a little more than an edgewood and learn, you know, I don't know, but
- 15:10[SPEAKER_00]: Both are returning next week, potentially.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_00]: It's what it sounded like Kyle Chienahan said.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_00]: Not gonna see many starters.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_00]: Thursday's preseason game, Kyle Chienahan said it'll be similar to week one, which I meant I'm gonna pull up right now.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_00]: Offense, dribbling started.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if we knew what the time was to start her.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_00]: Pleasant started at Lyft tackle.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_00]: Robert Jones started at Lyft guard at that game.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_00]: So in theory, that's a potential starter.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_00]: Colby started at right guard.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_00]: Drake Nugent started at center.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_00]: So, Brendan didn't start.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_00]: rock tailor yeah who else play obviously the specialist uh but but that might have been it oh no uh wasn't there Bethoon I'm just looking at the D line I thought maybe somebody
- 16:03[SPEAKER_00]: on the, yeah, Alfred Collins started, Ramello Heights started.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so those guys could be, you could, Marky Seekle started.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, that might be what we see, you know, we're not gonna see Curtis work.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_00]: He's not been back in patch yet.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_00]: So, that is that.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_00]: And how about, actually, Gentie got hurt inside.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't know that in the initial story.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: I got hurt inside.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_00]: It was really hot outside, and so they were on there.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_00]: They're beautiful, indoor practice facility.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_00]: Every team wants an indoor.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure Cobb would love an indoor, but the problem with an indoor, even if it rains or it's hot, it's like now you're not on grass and you just rather be on grass.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, that's a rundown off the Vegas on Wednesday, TV broadcast on Thursday,
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: on KPIX, me and T-Rock, and Vernon Glenn.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see what we get to interview this week.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_00]: And I'll talk to you all soon.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_00]: Later.
