- 0:00Speaker 1: So the Elder Scrolls Oblivion remaster came out yesterday.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Yeah, you having fun.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a really good remaster. It's modernized in all
- 0:10Speaker 1: the ways you'd want it to be. It's well, it's
- 0:13Speaker 1: literally like playing the first RPG video game. I really
- 0:17Speaker 1: played for the first time again, and it's great. And
- 0:22Speaker 1: I was all ready for it to like ruin my
- 0:24Speaker 1: life and like mess up my sleeping schedule, and just
- 0:29Speaker 1: as you do, as you expect, as I would expect,
- 0:31Speaker 1: as it was twenty years ago, you know. But I've
- 0:35Speaker 1: got such healthy sleeping habits grouse that I made it
- 0:40Speaker 1: to ten thirty six before I was like, all right,
- 0:45Speaker 1: I'm too tired to play a game. Now, I need
- 0:48Speaker 1: to wind down with something else. I was probably asleep
- 0:51Speaker 1: by ten past eleven, and I got a very healthy
- 0:55Speaker 1: seven hours sleep.
- 0:56Speaker 2: If that's not being in your thirties, I don't know why.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I know the thing of like, oh I have every intention.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna stay up all night
- 1:06Speaker 2: and play video games. Oh my gosh, it's getting really late.
- 1:11Speaker 2: It's gotta be eleven thirty six.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I'm not even that cool.
- 1:18Speaker 2: I was giving you more credit than you were due.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I should have seen the warning signs coming when it
- 1:24Speaker 1: was about nine o'clock and I thought, oh, yeah, I
- 1:27Speaker 1: want the energy to stay up all night. I should
- 1:29Speaker 1: have some sugar. No, sugar's bad for me at this
- 1:32Speaker 1: time of night. I think I'll pass you.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Set yourself up for a good night's sleep.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Yeah, because I know nothing else.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I know how disregulated and disordered I am if I
- 1:42Speaker 1: don't get good sleep, and so in order to do
- 1:46Speaker 1: all the other things I want to do other than
- 1:49Speaker 1: play oblivion, I still need that, and it turns out
- 1:52Speaker 1: my body won't let me not get it.
- 1:55Speaker 2: This is great because this just means that you're gonna
- 1:58Speaker 2: have more energy today to play more oblivion. Your toll
- 2:02Speaker 2: oblivion hours is gonna go up.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Oh yeah. I mean look, between seven and ten pm
- 2:08Speaker 1: every day, that's gonna be prime oblivion hours for the
- 2:11Speaker 1: next several months.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I'm so happy for you. This is such a beautiful thing.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Yeah, but I want to stay up all night playing
- 2:17Speaker 1: video games. I want to eat cookies and stay up
- 2:20Speaker 1: all night playing video game. Get you some mountain dew,
- 2:23Speaker 1: Give me some mountain dew. It's horrible. I hate it.
- 2:25Speaker 1: I won't have it.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Yeah. Hello, and welcome to Bonus round the gate Leapers.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Grab Bag. Yeah, we're grabbing them bags. Grab Are we
- 2:43Speaker 1: still doing that? Is that still what's happening. We're grabbing
- 2:45Speaker 1: the different bags from the shelf. All right, it's been
- 2:49Speaker 1: a few months. I'm gonna ask what's a grab bag?
- 2:53Speaker 2: A grab bag is a bag full of miscallaneous items. Okay,
- 2:57Speaker 2: that is what this is. Yeah, so it's like, this
- 3:00Speaker 2: is me speculating based on what I think this is.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Speculate away.
- 3:05Speaker 2: You reach in and you like grab out little little
- 3:07Speaker 2: miscellaneous things from this particular bag and they're like little treats.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Okay, okay, but every time the listener reaches in, they always.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Grab a They start with an admins.
- 3:20Speaker 1: It's always in the same order.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Yes, they always grab They grab from the admin grab
- 3:25Speaker 2: bag on down the line of the different grab bags.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Okay, so it's a very structured grab bag.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Don't ruin the illusion. And before we get into the
- 3:37Speaker 2: grab bag itself, you can follow us on Patreon. We
- 3:40Speaker 2: have a free tier for ad free episodes, and paid
- 3:43Speaker 2: tiers with videos, et cetera.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Yes, that's patreon dot com. Forward slash gate Leapers the
- 3:48Speaker 1: best place to listen to this podcast.
- 3:50Speaker 2: You can also follow us on Instagram. You can like
- 3:53Speaker 2: comment on our clips. We have tons of funny stuff there.
- 3:56Speaker 1: That's at gateleapers Pod on Insta and three's because occasionally
- 4:01Speaker 1: the posts end up on threads as well. Wow, I
- 4:03Speaker 1: guess we've chosen Zuckerberg in the social media war. You're
- 4:06Speaker 1: win some, you lose someone. So that's at Gateleaper's pod.
- 4:11Speaker 1: We wish it was at Gateleapers, but we are blocked
- 4:14Speaker 1: out of that account, So it is at gate leapers
- 4:16Speaker 1: Pod on Instagram.
- 4:18Speaker 2: And you can go to the link in the description.
- 4:20Speaker 2: We have a live show coming up on May the
- 4:23Speaker 2: twenty fourth. May the twenty fourth be with you.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Yes, it is Star Wars them as. I keep forgetting
- 4:29Speaker 1: because I'm just more excited about doing our brand of
- 4:32Speaker 1: panel show in a live theater with a live audience,
- 4:35Speaker 1: and so I keep forgetting that it's Star Wars themed.
- 4:38Speaker 1: I'm just starting to make the games for it, and
- 4:40Speaker 1: I'm forgetting that it's Star Wars themed.
- 4:43Speaker 2: You're just making it live show themed. The theme of
- 4:47Speaker 2: the episode is live shows.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Even I know that would.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Be too met and Matt, I've been looking at the
- 4:53Speaker 2: calendar and it looks like May has five Thursday.
- 4:58Speaker 1: What what is that about? Oh, I can't be having that.
- 5:01Speaker 1: I only think about the production schedule of this podcast
- 5:04Speaker 1: in four thursdays at a time as you should. Okay, So,
- 5:08Speaker 1: because there's a fifth Thursday in May, there's still going
- 5:11Speaker 1: to be two fandomoniums, two brand new Fandomoniums, a brand
- 5:14Speaker 1: new bonus round, and a brand new press play. But
- 5:17Speaker 1: in the middle of the month between Sandwiched between all
- 5:20Speaker 1: of those lovely things, we are going to release an
- 5:23Speaker 1: actual play of a improv comedy role playing card game
- 5:29Speaker 1: that we recently did an actual play off, and it
- 5:32Speaker 1: was a lot of fun. It was a blast. The
- 5:34Speaker 1: game is called Imminent Peril and oh boy is it. Yes,
- 5:39Speaker 1: it was a lot of fun. It'll be a very
- 5:42Speaker 1: funny episode that we'll be putting out mid May so
- 5:45Speaker 1: that I don't have to write three fandomoniums in the
- 5:48Speaker 1: same month as a live show.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Mm. And it was so much fun. I cannot wait
- 5:53Speaker 2: to have that game and to just keep playing it
- 5:56Speaker 2: and pulling it out at parties. It's such a fun game.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it'll be an instant classic.
- 6:02Speaker 2: And as always, you can email and comment your muses
- 6:05Speaker 2: for anything in twenty twenty four or twenty twenty five
- 6:08Speaker 2: for any of those fandoms, and you can send them
- 6:10Speaker 2: to Gateleapers at gmail dot com.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Yes, or twenty twenty three or twenty twenty two. We've
- 6:15Speaker 1: been doing this podcast for like four years now.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Ooh, oh my god. If you hit me with a
- 6:20Speaker 2: muse from a really early episode, I will be so overjoyed.
- 6:25Speaker 1: What's your twilight mus?
- 6:28Speaker 2: I only want no, I want every mus, but especially
- 6:32Speaker 2: if you've got a twilight mus Speaking of muses, I
- 6:36Speaker 2: have a couple read out here today.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Are you officially in the mail bag.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Or officially in the mail bag?
- 6:42Speaker 1: I've just got to know which grap bag I'm grapping,
- 6:45Speaker 1: and so I'm reaching for the mail bag. Grab bag. Yes,
- 6:47Speaker 1: let's got two bags in.
- 6:48Speaker 2: It's it's double bagged, double bagged. So I have a
- 6:52Speaker 2: muse from Ben Robinson, and my instructions for this one
- 6:57Speaker 2: is to read this in the voice of an old
- 7:00Speaker 2: gold Rush era minor realizing they've just struck the mother.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Lowy, thank you van excellent prompt.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Oh gold and then there'll yes, oh yes, that's the voice.
- 7:14Speaker 2: I'm finding it. There's a lot of shoulder in this one.
- 7:19Speaker 1: You've got to imagine the shoulder movement that Or is
- 7:22Speaker 1: doing right now.
- 7:23Speaker 2: I have a muse for you, dra though not for
- 7:26Speaker 2: a Pandemonium topic, but for a street fighter.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Is that a straight fighter?
- 7:31Speaker 2: Street fighter?
- 7:32Speaker 1: Street fighter? Okay, my muse is.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Halloween two thousand and nine, when myself, John, and two
- 7:38Speaker 2: other friends dressed as Blanca, rue Ken, and Vega respectively.
- 7:43Speaker 1: More whooping. I think that you just struck them of a.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Little ooh gold. Going all out on a homemade Halloween
- 7:51Speaker 2: costume was huge for me in that era, and coordinating
- 7:54Speaker 2: with friends on a theme was a lot of fun. Unfortunately,
- 8:00Speaker 2: I couldn't find a group pick of us to share.
- 8:02Speaker 2: All I have is the attached picture of my daughter
- 8:04Speaker 2: and me from just before the party. It became a witch.
- 8:10Speaker 2: I did get a little witchy towards the end. It
- 8:12Speaker 2: did get a little witchy. But thank you so much
- 8:15Speaker 2: Ben for sending this in.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you Ben. Let's talk about Ben's email before
- 8:19Speaker 1: we analyze the prospector. Yes, I mean I love group costumes.
- 8:25Speaker 1: I love when people coordinate and a bunch of friends
- 8:28Speaker 1: get together and say, hey, should we be all the
- 8:30Speaker 1: different characters from this thing? I think that's a blast.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I mean, look, I'm going to have a controversial take
- 8:35Speaker 1: as a person who's not particularly a cosplayer.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Hit me with it.
- 8:40Speaker 1: This could be a bit of an ignorant one. I
- 8:42Speaker 1: don't think there's much fun in it unless you're doing
- 8:44Speaker 1: it with someone else, at least one other person, like
- 8:47Speaker 1: solo cosplayer. I don't get that a ton.
- 8:50Speaker 2: I feel like that type of thing has to be
- 8:53Speaker 2: You have to love the art of the crafting.
- 8:56Speaker 1: You gotta love the crafting.
- 8:57Speaker 2: You have to love the crafting because otherwise, like the
- 9:02Speaker 2: community of us, we're all together and we made these
- 9:06Speaker 2: costumes and we're going to be in this space of
- 9:08Speaker 2: joy together is always going to trump that.
- 9:11Speaker 1: It's like a fancy dress party. But you decide not
- 9:14Speaker 1: to invite anyone else.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Uh uh.
- 9:15Speaker 2: It's only the people that you have exclusively selected that
- 9:18Speaker 2: you love and cherish. So that was so fun.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Yeah, a great memory and yeah, please do you send
- 9:25Speaker 1: in your muses from press play episode topics? Absolutely? All right,
- 9:30Speaker 1: Now let's talk about the prospector.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I do.
- 9:35Speaker 1: I do agree it went a bit witchy. I've got
- 9:37Speaker 1: to say the physical actions in the room is what
- 9:39Speaker 1: we're selling. It because you did. You had the arm
- 9:42Speaker 1: and the knee was doing a thing.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:44Speaker 1: What you didn't communicate is you're also winking the entire time.
- 9:47Speaker 1: You're doing that impression, just like a prospector would. Yes,
- 9:50Speaker 1: I painted a tooth gold. Yeah, don't push it.
- 9:55Speaker 2: My donkey's out back. What I don't know that you did?
- 9:58Speaker 1: Know what a prospector is.
- 10:00Speaker 3: I do.
- 10:02Speaker 2: We're here in Colorado. I know what a prospector is.
- 10:05Speaker 2: I've panned for gold. One of the people in this
- 10:08Speaker 2: room has actually panned for gold.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I've panned for gold. Come on, now, I've been to
- 10:13Speaker 1: mining museums. Okay, oh yeah, sorry, I forgot the part
- 10:17Speaker 1: where I was panning for gold and then an old
- 10:19Speaker 1: lady came up behind me.
- 10:20Speaker 2: In my Okay, I'll work on the prospector for I'll
- 10:27Speaker 2: take your notes into consideration.
- 10:30Speaker 1: The physicality was fantastic.
- 10:32Speaker 2: And we have another muse Yes, this one sent in
- 10:36Speaker 2: by Drew Shulman, Drew or James Bond. Now, Drew did
- 10:41Speaker 2: not send in any directions, and you'll like, thank god,
- 10:45Speaker 2: it is like a full paragraph. If you would like
- 10:48Speaker 2: to give me a direction, then I would respect it.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Or do you want to respect Drew's wishes.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I'll respect Drew's wishes and no instructions for this.
- 10:56Speaker 2: While I was shown many of the films by my
- 10:59Speaker 2: dad while I was too young to really appreciate them,
- 11:02Speaker 2: it did mean I never fell in love with the
- 11:04Speaker 2: franchise as much as some, but have truly enjoyed Daniel
- 11:08Speaker 2: Craig's Run and above all else the N sixty four
- 11:12Speaker 2: Treasure Golden Eye. But my muse for this fandom is
- 11:16Speaker 2: the Martini and how James Bond taught me not to
- 11:20Speaker 2: order one. I won't go into too much, as a
- 11:25Speaker 2: lot of bonds like order has been discussed at length
- 11:30Speaker 2: in the Pandemonium episode already, but I will share my
- 11:32Speaker 2: two things it taught me for when I order my
- 11:35Speaker 2: own Martini.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Okay, I go.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Basically the opposite of him. First, gin instead of vodka,
- 11:44Speaker 2: and I like my vermouth sweet not dry. I also
- 11:48Speaker 2: prefer mixed as opposed to shaken, as it introduces much
- 11:52Speaker 2: less water to the drink and minimizes the dilution of
- 11:55Speaker 2: the spirits.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Nice. Okay, Yeah, the complete opposite of a Bond order,
- 12:00Speaker 1: but it sounds much more delicious.
- 12:02Speaker 2: It does sound pretty good.
- 12:04Speaker 1: I was thinking when Drew said opposite. I was going
- 12:07Speaker 1: direct opposites to everything, so I was like, instead of shaken,
- 12:11Speaker 1: I forgot that it was not stirred and just thought
- 12:13Speaker 1: what still then just completely still.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Don't move it at all, no ice, no nothing, but
- 12:17Speaker 2: you cannot move, don't even pour it still, as though
- 12:22Speaker 2: that's what still drinks are.
- 12:24Speaker 1: But I do love gin, yes much preferred gin to
- 12:28Speaker 1: vodka as a flavor.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Mm hmm. And I have tried driver mooth. I don't
- 12:33Speaker 2: think I've tried sweet vermouth.
- 12:34Speaker 1: See again, I thought wet for mooth is what was
- 12:37Speaker 1: going to be. M It's like, oh, that's not what
- 12:39Speaker 1: it is, though.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Ol vermouth is inherently wet.
- 12:44Speaker 1: I don't know liquids. That's what we're learning m M.
- 12:46Speaker 2: I'll learn prospectors if you learn liquids.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Okay, deal, one of those things comes up way more
- 12:52Speaker 1: in life prospectors. But thank you Drew for sending that in.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I would like to say thank you to our cast
- 13:01Speaker 1: for sending in emails to this bonus round segment. If
- 13:05Speaker 1: anyone has been off put by the fact that we
- 13:08Speaker 1: always read surnames when reading out the emails, and that's
- 13:11Speaker 1: maybe why you've not emailed into gate Leapers at gmail
- 13:14Speaker 1: dot com with your muses. We're only doing that for
- 13:17Speaker 1: our cast to shout them out. We will not dox you,
- 13:22Speaker 1: We will not blow you up. We could just do initials.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Uh huh, we could do first names only. You could
- 13:28Speaker 1: give me a fake name. You could be you could
- 13:31Speaker 1: be Natasha.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Fake name.
- 13:32Speaker 1: You could be Natasha fake name, the obvious Russian spy.
- 13:36Speaker 2: James Bond's gonna order her a drink. Well, we have
- 13:43Speaker 2: had some incredible Pandemonium episodes this month.
- 13:46Speaker 1: It was April was a blast.
- 13:48Speaker 2: April was a blast. We had a Firefly episode. We
- 13:52Speaker 2: had an SNL episode. What have you got for us?
- 13:55Speaker 2: On the Lilypad of irrelevancy?
- 13:57Speaker 1: Yes, come float across the pond, past the water boatmen,
- 14:02Speaker 1: past all the pond scum that has gathered at the
- 14:05Speaker 1: side because there's very little funding for environmental upkeep, and
- 14:10Speaker 1: float to the center of the lake where you will
- 14:13Speaker 1: find the Lilipad of irrelevancy. Is that a faf Oh
- 14:18Speaker 1: there we go. Okay, there's the frogs. Yeah, this was
- 14:20Speaker 1: bubbles bursting nice lovely. We're amongst the frogs. Okay, let's
- 14:30Speaker 1: talk Firefly first, and with Firefly, the main thing that
- 14:34Speaker 1: I think about with Firefly is that it's kind of
- 14:37Speaker 1: this infamous show that was canceled after one season, And
- 14:41Speaker 1: that was really the only thing I could think about
- 14:43Speaker 1: during the writing of this was all my favorite shows
- 14:46Speaker 1: that were canceled after one season, as well as the
- 14:48Speaker 1: idea that that doesn't really happen as much anymore. We
- 14:53Speaker 1: don't get as many things that go for like seven,
- 14:55Speaker 1: eight nine seasons either. We just got a lot of
- 14:57Speaker 1: things that kind of run two, three, four, m M.
- 15:01Speaker 1: But now when something is intended to run for a season,
- 15:04Speaker 1: they call it like a limited series, yes, or something
- 15:07Speaker 1: like that.
- 15:07Speaker 2: They know it ahead of time exactly, and they tell.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Us so very few things. But I want to just
- 15:14Speaker 1: talk about some of my favorite, let's say, top three
- 15:18Speaker 1: favorite shows that were canceled after one season.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Ooh, lay it on me, because I'm trying to think
- 15:25Speaker 2: of other ones. But Firefly does have like feels like
- 15:27Speaker 2: it has the corner on the market.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Oh yeah, right. Firefly is probably the main one other
- 15:35Speaker 1: than perhaps this first one that I think is it's
- 15:37Speaker 1: a travesty that it only lasted one season, And I
- 15:40Speaker 1: think a lot of people will be thinking this show
- 15:42Speaker 1: right now Freaks and Geeks.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Oh, Freaks and Geeks.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Yeah, the Pole Fig and jud Apato. Like, I don't
- 15:50Speaker 1: even want to say sitcom, even though it had a
- 15:51Speaker 1: lot of traditional sitcom beats. I want to say comedy drama.
- 15:56Speaker 2: That show was so incredibly good, but I feel like
- 16:01Speaker 2: it was just wrong time.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Given that a lot of modern TV shows, especially in
- 16:06Speaker 1: like the twenty tens kind of onwards, have the sort
- 16:10Speaker 1: of blend of comedy drama that Freaks and Geeks went for,
- 16:14Speaker 1: where it's not just sort of a traditional family sitcom. Yes,
- 16:17Speaker 1: it follows a family, it follows their friend groups at school,
- 16:21Speaker 1: but it doesn't have the beats of a traditional sitcom
- 16:24Speaker 1: quite so much. And what a crazy cast as well,
- 16:29Speaker 1: like Seth Rogan, Jason Siegel, James Franco, Busy Phillips, John Francis,
- 16:33Speaker 1: Day Martin, Stars, Sam Levine, Linda Cardalini.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Such a phenomenal cast of people who as youths, like
- 16:41Speaker 2: because it's the kids mostly of this high school. Yeah,
- 16:44Speaker 2: oh so much talent, a.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Lot of people who've gone on to do a lot
- 16:48Speaker 1: of things, James Franco or someone who's gone on to
- 16:51Speaker 1: do too much. Yeah, it was just this perfect blend
- 16:56Speaker 1: of a lot of sitcoms at the time were either
- 16:58Speaker 1: about groups of friends or the family, but very few
- 17:01Speaker 1: were about both outside of like cartoons and stuff. So
- 17:05Speaker 1: to see that played out on screen is great and
- 17:07Speaker 1: it clearly inspired a lot of future comedy shows.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like if Freaks and Geeks were made now,
- 17:15Speaker 2: there's no way it's getting canceled after one season. No,
- 17:18Speaker 2: we have such an understanding of that as a thing
- 17:22Speaker 2: that we want to be consuming. Yeah, it just couldn't
- 17:26Speaker 2: survive in the era of Cribs.
- 17:30Speaker 1: No, No, it couldn't. Yeah, the people were enjoying Cribs
- 17:35Speaker 1: too much. That's the problem. Cribs was too good.
- 17:37Speaker 2: It was too good. They wanted to see cool people
- 17:41Speaker 2: and they're cool houses and pretend that they could also
- 17:43Speaker 2: be cool people with cool houses. They didn't want to
- 17:46Speaker 2: see no freaks or Geeks.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Look, pretty much everyone who we've named, including jud Apatow
- 17:52Speaker 1: and Paul Feek, have gone on to like shape the
- 17:54Speaker 1: comedy industry. So even though it only ran for a season,
- 17:58Speaker 1: pretty much everyone involved has gone on to be a
- 18:01Speaker 1: huge part of the language of American comedy and Canadian comedy.
- 18:06Speaker 1: There's Canadians involved. We see you seth all right, this
- 18:11Speaker 1: next one is probably like a guilty pleasure personal favorite.
- 18:15Speaker 1: I know it wasn't like a perfect show, but I
- 18:17Speaker 1: was just the right age at the right time that
- 18:19Speaker 1: it was a disappointment that I got canceled. Do you
- 18:22Speaker 1: remember a show called Studio or sixty on the Sunset Strip?
- 18:25Speaker 2: I only remember it because you mentioned it regularly fantastic.
- 18:30Speaker 1: I'm not sure how regularly I mention it. Maybe once
- 18:33Speaker 1: a year.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Well, I was gonna say once a year. Okay, that's fine.
- 18:36Speaker 1: I can deal with that. I don't bring it up
- 18:38Speaker 1: at breakfast every morning.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Not every morning.
- 18:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:42Speaker 1: This is a lesser known Aaron Sorkin series. It came
- 18:46Speaker 1: after The West Wing, but before The Newsroom, which both
- 18:50Speaker 1: ran for multiple seasons. And West Wing huge influential hit
- 18:53Speaker 1: on television and politics, but it got canceled after one season.
- 18:58Speaker 1: And it was essentially a more mattic thirty Rock Like
- 19:01Speaker 1: it was the same premise. It was a show about
- 19:04Speaker 1: making a Saturday night comedy live late night show.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Yeah, because thirty Rock, I see why, Like that is
- 19:13Speaker 2: a good idea for a show.
- 19:15Speaker 1: But if someone's taking the more comedic angle and sitcoms
- 19:20Speaker 1: are famously much cheaper to produce than dramas. NBC might
- 19:24Speaker 1: have felt like they only needed one of these on
- 19:26Speaker 1: their portfolio.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 19:29Speaker 1: But it's a shame because it was also good thirty
- 19:32Speaker 1: Rock amazing, Studio sixty good to great, but could have
- 19:36Speaker 1: been amazing if it could have ran for another couple
- 19:38Speaker 1: of seasons to find its its legs a little bit.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Mm hmm, because Matthew Perry and Bradley Whitford, who were
- 19:44Speaker 1: the leads, were both great as like, yeah, jaded middle
- 19:48Speaker 1: aged dudes. Yeah, and I'd have liked to have seen
- 19:50Speaker 1: where it went. And plus it's Aaron Sorkin, so it
- 19:52Speaker 1: was just witty as hell, and I'd love TV shows
- 19:55Speaker 1: with like consistently witty dialogue. I don't like my suspension
- 20:00Speaker 1: of disbelief and shows like that and Succession is that
- 20:03Speaker 1: I don't mind suspending the disbelief that everyone's witty, Like,
- 20:07Speaker 1: all characters have great comebacks, all characters are quick with
- 20:10Speaker 1: their conversation. Yeah, and when you said it, in like
- 20:14Speaker 1: a setting where it's like writers or politicians or businessmen,
- 20:18Speaker 1: it sort of makes sense that people would be talking
- 20:20Speaker 1: all the time, so they would develop and horn a wit.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Which absolutely makes sense. And I do get the thing
- 20:27Speaker 2: of thirty Rock going sillier because it's it's basically about
- 20:33Speaker 2: making SNL. You're making a weekly topical comedy sketch show,
- 20:41Speaker 2: let's go. But I do think there is an angle
- 20:44Speaker 2: if it would have gotten more time, the idea if
- 20:47Speaker 2: it has that Aaron Sorkin dialogue. I do love the
- 20:50Speaker 2: idea of the writers being a lot smarter than the
- 20:54Speaker 2: things they're writing. Yes, like that's a cool take.
- 20:58Speaker 1: I think there was a bit of that we're.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Really witty, let's throw in three fart jokes though uh huh, yeah,
- 21:04Speaker 2: this demographic's gonna want a fart joke, let's go.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Exactly, And that's what it could get into more than
- 21:10Speaker 1: say thirty Brock could, which is a brilliant sitcom, one
- 21:13Speaker 1: of the best of all time, but Studio sixty on
- 21:15Speaker 1: the Sunset strip. Don't check it out because I don't
- 21:19Speaker 1: know how well it's aged. And finally, this is like
- 21:23Speaker 1: a cult classic I was gonna say in the UK,
- 21:26Speaker 1: but honestly around the world, because I think Paul Rudd
- 21:29Speaker 1: is a big evangelist for it and kind of mentions
- 21:32Speaker 1: it in interviews when he's asked for a recommendation or
- 21:35Speaker 1: an influence or something like that. But Garth Marengi's Dark Place,
- 21:40Speaker 1: Oh Yes, is a sitcom that's kind of a spoof
- 21:44Speaker 1: of a badly made eighties sci fi fantasy.
- 21:49Speaker 2: Drama set in a hospital set in a.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Hospital, with interviews with the cast and crew from twenty
- 21:57Speaker 1: years later of like having made this show. It was
- 22:01Speaker 1: created by Matthew Holness and Richard Iowadi and also features
- 22:05Speaker 1: Alice Lowe and Matt Berry on the cast as well
- 22:07Speaker 1: as them and it was Matt Berry's first like on
- 22:10Speaker 1: screen acting role.
- 22:13Speaker 2: What a Little Matt Baby.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Yes. So if you've enjoyed Matt Berry on what we
- 22:18Speaker 1: Do in the Shadows and a bunch of other things
- 22:20Speaker 1: that he's popped up in the last five years, I
- 22:23Speaker 1: believe Dark Morengi. I believe Dark Morange's Garth Place. I
- 22:28Speaker 1: believe Garth Mrangey's Dark Place is on Peacock. I think
- 22:33Speaker 1: like it's only six episodes and then you can say
- 22:36Speaker 1: you've watched a cult British TV series that Paul Rudd likes.
- 22:40Speaker 2: And also I like, Yes, depending on whose opinion you.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Value more, and I know whose opinion I value the most.
- 22:50Speaker 1: The prospectors.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Oh watch Garth Marenghi's dark. That's a different voice altogether.
- 22:57Speaker 1: I liked how piracy that was.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Yeah me hearty.
- 23:01Speaker 1: A fantastic virate. So those are my top three top
- 23:04Speaker 1: three shows canceled after one season, along with Firefly. Of course,
- 23:08Speaker 1: what are your favorite shows that were canceled after one season?
- 23:11Speaker 1: Let us know gateleapers at gmail dot com.
- 23:14Speaker 2: I have one to throw in the mix. Oh yes, Aordrew,
- 23:16Speaker 2: go ahead, and I think I win. It's not a competition,
- 23:20Speaker 2: but I think I win.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Okay.
- 23:22Speaker 2: I had a group of friends who we loved fandom
- 23:25Speaker 2: things and we were like, Okay, we're going to find
- 23:27Speaker 2: a show that started and we're going to watch it
- 23:29Speaker 2: from episode one and it's going to be our show
- 23:32Speaker 2: as a friend group. This was the show Do No Harm.
- 23:38Speaker 2: It was a Jackal and Hide, like it was gonna
- 23:42Speaker 2: be like, it's not a good premise, but a Jackal
- 23:45Speaker 2: and Hide. But he's a psychiatrist I don't know, or
- 23:49Speaker 2: a doctor of some kind, like a surgeon, some medical thing,
- 23:52Speaker 2: but like when he goes to sleep, he wakes up
- 23:55Speaker 2: as a different person, right type of thing. This show
- 23:59Speaker 2: we watched the first episode were like, not great but
- 24:02Speaker 2: we're in it. You went back the next week to
- 24:05Speaker 2: watch it and it wasn't on at the advertised time.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Oh, canceled after one episode.
- 24:10Speaker 2: It was so bad and it was so poorly reviewed,
- 24:14Speaker 2: and it was the viewing figures were so terrible that
- 24:19Speaker 2: it was canceled after one episode. Brilliant They decided they
- 24:24Speaker 2: would rather have a rerun of something else shitty cribes
- 24:29Speaker 2: probably probably cribs than air this show on television. It
- 24:35Speaker 2: was not good enough to see the light of day
- 24:37Speaker 2: wow at a shitty timeslot on cable TV.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Talk about back in the wrong holes? Oh yeah, do
- 24:44Speaker 1: you know harm?
- 24:45Speaker 2: It did a lot of harm to whatever network produced it.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Oh, that's a fantastic example. And if you have an
- 24:55Speaker 1: example of something that ran even for just one episode,
- 25:00Speaker 1: gateleapers at gmail dot com, we'd love to hear it.
- 25:05Speaker 1: All right, let's talk SNL. Not the fake ones in
- 25:08Speaker 1: thirty rockets Studio sixty on the Sunset Strip, but the
- 25:11Speaker 1: real one.
- 25:11Speaker 2: The real ones, the real ones you can go and
- 25:14Speaker 2: watch today.
- 25:15Speaker 1: So something that comes up a lot with SNL is
- 25:19Speaker 1: the eras like what was your era of SNL? And
- 25:23Speaker 1: in the episode itself of Pandemonium that we did. There
- 25:27Speaker 1: wasn't really time to get into like almost like the
- 25:29Speaker 1: history of SNL, right, like the entire what it looks
- 25:32Speaker 1: like in terms of who was where on what date.
- 25:35Speaker 1: And I don't know if that's interesting to anyone, but
- 25:37Speaker 1: that's why it's called the lily Pad of irrelevancy. And
- 25:40Speaker 1: it's timelines are interesting to me. I love a timeline.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Yeah, we didn't really get into the history because there's
- 25:46Speaker 2: tons of people on the cast now, but it's been
- 25:48Speaker 2: going for fifty years. Fifty years, so there is a
- 25:53Speaker 2: massive amount of history there.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'm going to try and condense it as
- 25:58Speaker 1: fast as I can over the next five ten minutes.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 26:02Speaker 1: So I've split it into eras and this was helped
- 26:04Speaker 1: with a very popular reddit post on the Saturday Night
- 26:07Speaker 1: Live subreddit where someone had a huge detailed spreadsheet of
- 26:11Speaker 1: the timeline of everything split into sub eras. But we're
- 26:15Speaker 1: just going to talk about the big hitters. But thank
- 26:18Speaker 1: you to that document. I'm not crediting it, well, but
- 26:21Speaker 1: there we go. That's reredit It's all anonymous. So the
- 26:25Speaker 1: first era, when it begins in nineteen seventy five, is
- 26:28Speaker 1: called the Golden Era, and this lasts from seventy five
- 26:31Speaker 1: to seventy nine and features your Dan Akroyd's your John
- 26:34Speaker 1: Belushi's your Chevy Chases, your Bill Murray's your Al Frankens.
- 26:38Speaker 1: It's the exciting birth of an alternative comedy movement, the
- 26:42Speaker 1: counterculture to the established order of late night shows. Also
- 26:47Speaker 1: there's cocaine.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Ooh, any era with cocaine is going to name itself
- 26:52Speaker 2: the Golden Era.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Yeah. Then next up there is the lawnless era from
- 26:58Speaker 1: nineteen eighty to nineteen eighty four. They've had their cool
- 27:02Speaker 1: counterculture part of the era. Now, Lorne Michaels is like
- 27:06Speaker 1: burnt out from doing it, doesn't really see it as
- 27:09Speaker 1: this anymore, as it wasn't yet an institution. It was
- 27:12Speaker 1: just a profitable TV show. To put it in our terms,
- 27:16Speaker 1: this is like if Alex Horn quit task Master after
- 27:19Speaker 1: the Ed Gamble and Rose Matta Fao season, but then
- 27:23Speaker 1: was just about to return this upcoming season with Jason Mansukiss.
- 27:28Speaker 2: It wouldn't have made it. Yeah right, oh, we wouldn't
- 27:31Speaker 2: even be here.
- 27:33Speaker 1: But this season features Julie Louis Dreyfus, Jim Belushi, the
- 27:38Speaker 1: Other Blueeshi, and Eddie Murphy is pretty much the star
- 27:42Speaker 1: of this era. It's like the Eddie Murphy program, the
- 27:44Speaker 1: Eddie Murphy project to launch him as a film star.
- 27:48Speaker 2: It worked.
- 27:49Speaker 1: It worked. Then in nineteen eighty five with a brand
- 27:54Speaker 1: new cast and Lorne Michaels is back in charge because
- 27:58Speaker 1: he's left SNL. He's realized that actually, I would prefer
- 28:02Speaker 1: to be to build a thing that is it becomes
- 28:04Speaker 1: an institution. I don't want to be the counterculture. I
- 28:07Speaker 1: am the institution. And he takes back the reins and
- 28:11Speaker 1: has an initial cast that includes Robert Downey Jr. Anthony
- 28:14Speaker 1: Michael Hole, John Cusack, and after a year he fires
- 28:18Speaker 1: everyone except John Lovetz.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Got a little bit of a crisis.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Yeah, he kind of brought in like comedy, a lot
- 28:26Speaker 1: more comedy actors than like the writer's turned actors. Yeah,
- 28:32Speaker 1: but it's immediately corrected by bringing in mainstays like Dana Carvey,
- 28:36Speaker 1: Phil Hartman, Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, people with a writing
- 28:40Speaker 1: background as well.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Yeah, because if you're working on this tight schedule, that
- 28:45Speaker 2: is so important to have people who know how to
- 28:48Speaker 2: transition those both. Yeah, he knows what he's talking about.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Eventually, eventually, and that is what's known as the Silver
- 28:56Speaker 1: era pretty much the decade from eighty five to ninety
- 28:59Speaker 1: four and what comes after silver bron Bronze, Bronze. The
- 29:04Speaker 1: year I was born, I killed SNW Yes, the Bronze
- 29:09Speaker 1: era again last another decade goes to like two thousand
- 29:12Speaker 1: and four. This is like the era of like growing
- 29:16Speaker 1: like growing up and seeing clips from SNL. This is
- 29:19Speaker 1: what my first understanding of SNL was. And it became
- 29:23Speaker 1: less of a boys club during this time, which is
- 29:25Speaker 1: the main positive. You got people like Molly Shannon, Tina Fey,
- 29:28Speaker 1: Amy Poehler, Mayor Rudolph joining the cast during this time
- 29:33Speaker 1: and Keenan Thompson joins in two thousand and three. It
- 29:36Speaker 1: should be noted this era is known for like some hits,
- 29:39Speaker 1: but generally like stagnating a little after the millennium like
- 29:43Speaker 1: kind of two thousand and one to two thousand and
- 29:45Speaker 1: four were not considered good years for SNL.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Keetch comedy in general was less fashionable.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Uh you know, I think sketch comedy in the UK
- 29:54Speaker 1: was like doing a boom at that time. I just
- 29:57Speaker 1: I don't think SNL was clicking with millennials too much.
- 30:01Speaker 1: I think they hadn't figured out how to grab the
- 30:04Speaker 1: next generation. But they did in two thousand and five.
- 30:07Speaker 1: When YouTube happens YouTube, Yeah, this is what's known as
- 30:11Speaker 1: the renaissance. From two thousand and five to twenty eleven,
- 30:14Speaker 1: YouTube boosts their viewing figures. Obviously got the Lonely Islander
- 30:18Speaker 1: kind of championing that with Andy Samberg, but you also
- 30:22Speaker 1: get very viral sketches with like Kristen Wigg, Jason Sedeikis,
- 30:26Speaker 1: Bill Hayder, people like that, and web two point alway
- 30:29Speaker 1: is in full swing at this point, so people are
- 30:31Speaker 1: sharing clips of things. People are like, oh, check out
- 30:34Speaker 1: the latest SNL sketch.
- 30:36Speaker 2: It's way less of a commitment to watch one sketch, yes,
- 30:41Speaker 2: at any time you want to, than to set aside
- 30:45Speaker 2: Saturday night in its entirety exactly.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Yeah, different ways to consume it helps give it a
- 30:51Speaker 1: boost in popularity. But from twenty twelve to twenty twenty,
- 30:54Speaker 1: it's the post renaissance, as it's called, because ratings take
- 30:58Speaker 1: a dive again, a lot of the cast leaves. Obama
- 31:02Speaker 1: did nothing in his second term, and America was in
- 31:04Speaker 1: this like malaise generally speaking, between twenty twelve and twenty sixteen,
- 31:09Speaker 1: which is why we saw the rise of fascism. Sorry, comedymedy,
- 31:14Speaker 1: the first Trump term is awful for comedy. That they're
- 31:17Speaker 1: in power now and they're more normalized, so we can
- 31:20Speaker 1: kind of poke fun in a way that makes sense
- 31:22Speaker 1: again because far right politics has once again been normalized
- 31:26Speaker 1: in society. But between twenty sixteen and twenty twenty, it
- 31:29Speaker 1: was still kind of a surprise, and it was like,
- 31:30Speaker 1: how do you counter stupidity?
- 31:32Speaker 2: Uh huh? How do you make something funnier that someone
- 31:36Speaker 2: who doesn't know what they're doing?
- 31:38Speaker 1: Exactly? Like, how do you satirize something that is a
- 31:40Speaker 1: satire of a movement from the nineteen thirties.
- 31:44Speaker 2: One of the funniest universal things is Oops, someone fell down. Yeah,
- 31:50Speaker 2: but like they're fine, Like they fell down, It was funny,
- 31:53Speaker 2: but they're fine.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Uh huh.
- 31:56Speaker 2: These people are falling down and America's not. How is
- 32:00Speaker 2: this jokes?
- 32:01Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 32:02Speaker 1: Exactly exactly. And also, like Lawn Michael's helped to normalize
- 32:06Speaker 1: the concept of Donald Trump when he hosted in twenty
- 32:09Speaker 1: fifteen when he was on the campaign trail to become
- 32:12Speaker 1: Republican nominee. Normalization in the media was a very real
- 32:16Speaker 1: thing that had to happen for Donald Trump because obviously
- 32:19Speaker 1: we know he was a failed businessman who went bankrupt
- 32:21Speaker 1: I think fifteen times or something and just never had
- 32:26Speaker 1: any success in the business world, but needed the perception
- 32:29Speaker 1: that he was successful. So in order to do that,
- 32:32Speaker 1: he needed lots of TV appearances in the twenty tens
- 32:34Speaker 1: for it to land that I am a businessman, remember.
- 32:38Speaker 2: And that's what I'm famous for exactly, not for anything else.
- 32:42Speaker 1: So to accept his reality as a false one normalized
- 32:46Speaker 1: the idea that he's a good businessman. But obviously we're
- 32:49Speaker 1: seeing from the economy right now, we know that's not true. Also,
- 32:53Speaker 1: the main thing that sucked about this, other than it
- 32:54Speaker 1: being the Trump era, is Colin Jost is also there.
- 32:58Speaker 1: I yeah, don't get and Josh don't know what it is.
- 33:01Speaker 1: But SCA hope you're having a good time.
- 33:03Speaker 2: I hope you're having a great, lovely joy astime.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Which leads us to now the post zoom slash current
- 33:10Speaker 1: era from twenty twenty one to present. Being back in
- 33:13Speaker 1: the studio after the pandemic, there's renewed digital success because
- 33:17Speaker 1: short form videos are our things, so sketches can get
- 33:19Speaker 1: even snappier, shorter, quicker, clips. It doesn't have to be
- 33:23Speaker 1: a full five minute sketch that's funny. It can just
- 33:25Speaker 1: be a weird thirty second thing that goes viral on TikTok.
- 33:29Speaker 1: So it's considered a more successful era now than sort
- 33:31Speaker 1: of the twenty the bulk of the twenty tens, and
- 33:34Speaker 1: also Keenan Thompson is still there, so they go. And
- 33:37Speaker 1: even though SNL now is like it's a product of
- 33:40Speaker 1: its time, it's an institution that helps launch careers. Is
- 33:44Speaker 1: it really for the audience anymore? Who can say? But
- 33:48Speaker 1: thankfully it doesn't always have to come from the same source.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Like I very much think that dropout functions the way
- 33:54Speaker 1: that SNL used to in the seventies and eighties, where
- 33:56Speaker 1: it's a platform for comedy writers and performers to cut
- 33:59Speaker 1: their tea before potentially moving on to something else or
- 34:03Speaker 1: growing a bigger aspect of whatever their form of entertainment is.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Yeah, And a similar thing that I said earlier of
- 34:12Speaker 2: having a writer and performer having that type of idea
- 34:16Speaker 2: of like we're making this comedy, I am the person
- 34:19Speaker 2: who can think of how to write it and how
- 34:21Speaker 2: to perform it is also a big dropout element. Yeah,
- 34:25Speaker 2: writer performer hybrids or people who started as writers moving
- 34:28Speaker 2: into that performance space exactly.
- 34:30Speaker 1: So, even if the future of SNL isn't great, I
- 34:33Speaker 1: think the future of comedy in America is so it's fine.
- 34:37Speaker 2: I love it.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Yes, now, please leave the center of the pond, path
- 34:41Speaker 1: through the mists back to the shoreline, where you will
- 34:44Speaker 1: once more find safety.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Don't mind the alligators. We've released them for no reason
- 34:50Speaker 2: and they're hungry. That was so incredibly informative. Let's test
- 34:57Speaker 2: some of our knowledge in a segment we call very
- 35:01Speaker 2: descriptively Matt versus Odra. Watch out for my villain Era.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Don't mess with the games Mast Captain, power up. I'm
- 35:10Speaker 1: going to score all the points.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Passing knowledge was enough.
- 35:14Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to your doom.
- 35:17Speaker 2: I just hope we have a lot of fun.
- 35:19Speaker 1: And ignore this sentence. If you're a goddamn liser, you're
- 35:23Speaker 1: going down.
- 35:25Speaker 2: I want to fight. It's time for another round of
- 35:32Speaker 2: Matt versus Odra. Yes, and we could not do it
- 35:36Speaker 2: without the incredible Aaron Randolph of bfytw what have you
- 35:40Speaker 2: got for us today?
- 35:42Speaker 3: Hey guys, we're gonna have some fun with one of
- 35:44Speaker 3: my favorite games ever. I am just firmly of the
- 35:48Speaker 3: belief that the British know how to do game shows
- 35:51Speaker 3: like Nobody's Business, and one of my favorites of all
- 35:54Speaker 3: time is The Chase. And we've already done this show
- 35:58Speaker 3: once on my podcast bfy tw, but I haven't actually
- 36:03Speaker 3: gotten to do it with a real British person. So
- 36:05Speaker 3: I thought, what the hell, let's make this happen and
- 36:09Speaker 3: better Yet, Matt, you are currently going through in this
- 36:15Speaker 3: Matt versus Oudra series what I would refer to as
- 36:18Speaker 3: a drubbing. Yeah.
- 36:20Speaker 1: I think I've heard some of the journalists using that
- 36:23Speaker 1: exact words, and I think it's fair. It's a fair analysis.
- 36:27Speaker 1: I need to step up my game pretty massively to.
- 36:31Speaker 3: Be fair to you. One of those wins on Audre's
- 36:34Speaker 3: Behalf was my choice to be fair, to be fair
- 36:37Speaker 3: to the Odra. The other two weren't.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Okay, you could take away one of them.
- 36:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not taking away. I'm not taking away anything.
- 36:47Speaker 3: But in this case, I think it's only fair because
- 36:49Speaker 3: you're on the back foot, Matt, that you should be
- 36:51Speaker 3: our player and Odra is going to be our chaser.
- 36:56Speaker 1: I think that's very fair, all right.
- 36:58Speaker 2: Yeah, important, dang it?
- 37:01Speaker 1: Right?
- 37:02Speaker 3: So we're going to play a my own modified version.
- 37:05Speaker 3: We'll call it Hot Pursuit. Why not. We're going to
- 37:10Speaker 3: do an individual chase just like the show. You're going
- 37:12Speaker 3: to start off on the table with an offer, and
- 37:15Speaker 3: then Audrey will make you high or low offers and
- 37:18Speaker 3: you can choose where you want to start on the
- 37:20Speaker 3: board to try and get whatever advantage you think you
- 37:23Speaker 3: can get for the final chase. So what we're playing
- 37:26Speaker 3: for here determines how well you start in the final chase.
- 37:30Speaker 3: And then we will do a modified final chase where
- 37:32Speaker 3: instead of quick fire questions against a two minute clock,
- 37:36Speaker 3: each of you are going to get twenty questions based
- 37:40Speaker 3: on your score when you finish determines you know how
- 37:43Speaker 3: well you do, and then Audrey will have a chance
- 37:45Speaker 3: to try and catch you. Okay, if she does, then
- 37:49Speaker 3: she wins yet again. If you win, you will have
- 37:53Speaker 3: taken your first step in a comeback of sorts.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I need to make this first step now
- 37:59Speaker 1: so that a second, the third step can be taking.
- 38:02Speaker 3: All right, Matt, it's time for your individual chase. But
- 38:05Speaker 3: who are you going to be playing against today? Is
- 38:08Speaker 3: it going to be the rad scientist Odra Stevenson yes,
- 38:14Speaker 3: I love it rad for radical rather than radiation least,
- 38:18Speaker 3: I hope. Why about let's say, ah, and who else?
- 38:22Speaker 3: Could it be?
- 38:23Speaker 2: No?
- 38:23Speaker 3: One? Because that's the only chaser we have, So let's
- 38:27Speaker 3: just bring on the chaser here. She is the rad
- 38:30Speaker 3: scientist herself, the queen of working in stem Odra Stevenson terrifying.
- 38:38Speaker 2: It is. I ready to roll?
- 38:41Speaker 3: All right. We're gonna start with the standard two step
- 38:45Speaker 3: bonus in the final chase that will be five steps
- 38:48Speaker 3: from home and three steps away from the chaser. But
- 38:52Speaker 3: if you'd like to make this slightly easier on yourself
- 38:55Speaker 3: and take a step closer to home, be four steps
- 38:57Speaker 3: away from home and four steps ahead of the chaser,
- 39:00Speaker 3: Audre will offer you one step. Yes.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Nice.
- 39:06Speaker 3: If, however, you'd like to make it harder on yourself,
- 39:10Speaker 3: but try and get a greater advantage. In the final chase,
- 39:13Speaker 3: Audrew will offer you three steps. Just bear in mind
- 39:18Speaker 3: if Audre catches you in this individual chase, you get
- 39:22Speaker 3: zero steps.
- 39:24Speaker 1: Ah that's a problem.
- 39:25Speaker 3: Yeah, Matt, what would you like to do?
- 39:28Speaker 1: I think initially we're gonna go in the middle and
- 39:31Speaker 1: we're gonna say two steps.
- 39:32Speaker 3: We're going to two steps. It is all right, we'll
- 39:35Speaker 3: see how that goes. For two steps, Matt. The chase
- 39:40Speaker 3: is on our first question. Who is the subject of
- 39:44Speaker 3: Robert Bolt's play A Man for All Seasons? Is it
- 39:49Speaker 3: Ace or Thomas Moore? Be Thomas Hardy or see Thomas A. Beckett. Oh,
- 39:57Speaker 3: I got your answers right after one, right after another. Matt,
- 40:00Speaker 3: you put Thomas Hardy? Any particular reason you went with that?
- 40:05Speaker 1: It was kind of a process of elimination of the
- 40:08Speaker 1: others more. I genuinely don't know the answer.
- 40:11Speaker 3: All right, Well, let's see. The correct answer is a
- 40:17Speaker 3: Sir Thomas Moore. So this might be a bad start.
- 40:20Speaker 3: If Audra got this right, she's gonna take a step
- 40:23Speaker 3: on the table, be two steps behind you. Audra has
- 40:26Speaker 3: put see Thomas A. Beckett. Neither one of you got
- 40:33Speaker 3: that right, So you're just stay in put right where
- 40:35Speaker 3: you are.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Okay, it's just a warm up.
- 40:36Speaker 3: It's a warm up. It's all it is.
- 40:39Speaker 2: It's like it never even happened.
- 40:41Speaker 3: Like it never happened.
- 40:42Speaker 1: This doesn't happen on the ITV show too often.
- 40:45Speaker 2: They cut it out when it does.
- 40:47Speaker 3: But it does happen. I've seen it. Here is your
- 40:50Speaker 3: next question. Both of you. In the novel Animal Farm,
- 40:54Speaker 3: mister Jones is said to represent who Joseph Stalin, Nicholas
- 41:00Speaker 3: the Second, or Vladimir Lenin. Once again, your answers came
- 41:05Speaker 3: pretty close to each other. Matt, you have put Zar
- 41:09Speaker 3: Nicholas the second.
- 41:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like he'd be like the whole power
- 41:14Speaker 1: structure at the top of it, whereas the animals represent
- 41:17Speaker 1: like Lenin and Stalin.
- 41:18Speaker 3: Okay, well, let's see the correct answer is Zar Nicholas
- 41:24Speaker 3: the second. You come a step closer to home, Audra
- 41:27Speaker 3: has put goes wrong with Joseph Stalin and stays off
- 41:32Speaker 3: the table.
- 41:35Speaker 1: This is good. These are steps. These are the steps
- 41:36Speaker 1: we need.
- 41:37Speaker 3: It's an advantage. She's now four steps behind you, so
- 41:41Speaker 3: you've got four steps to catch him. Uh, and Matt
- 41:44Speaker 3: has four steps left to get home. Here is your
- 41:46Speaker 3: next question. What part of the body rotates at the
- 41:50Speaker 3: carpo metacarpal joint. Is it a the thumb, be the
- 41:54Speaker 3: elbow or see the shoulder? All right, Matt, you have
- 42:01Speaker 3: put see the shoulder.
- 42:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:04Speaker 1: I genuinely don't know, and I feel like Audrew does
- 42:07Speaker 1: know this one. But I just want with shoulder because
- 42:10Speaker 1: it felt right at the time.
- 42:12Speaker 3: All right, we'll see the correct answer is a the thumb.
- 42:17Speaker 3: If Audre's got this right, she goes back to three
- 42:19Speaker 3: steps behind you. Odre has put a thumb, gets it
- 42:24Speaker 3: right and comes a step onto the table and three
- 42:27Speaker 3: steps behind.
- 42:28Speaker 1: That's scary seeing Oldra on the bullet pursuit.
- 42:32Speaker 3: For Yeah, it's a little ominous, but she's still three
- 42:36Speaker 3: steps behind. Here is your next question. Named after the
- 42:40Speaker 3: British mathematician and codebreaker, The Turing test evaluates what is
- 42:45Speaker 3: it a artificial intelligence, B financial risk or C radioactive decay.
- 42:53Speaker 3: Matt has put artificial intelligence.
- 42:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's to do with official intelligence.
- 43:00Speaker 3: I would agree with you. I think this is correct,
- 43:02Speaker 3: but the we'll find out. The correct answer is yes,
- 43:06Speaker 3: it's a artificial intelligence. Okay, you are now three steps
- 43:09Speaker 3: from home. Andre has put also puts artificial intelligence and
- 43:14Speaker 3: stays the three steps by.
- 43:15Speaker 1: We're both smart.
- 43:16Speaker 3: Oh my god, who would have thunk it?
- 43:20Speaker 1: Here?
- 43:20Speaker 2: Could have predicted this?
- 43:22Speaker 3: Here is your next question, matteas rose wine is produced
- 43:27Speaker 3: in which country A Portugal, be South Africa or see Germany?
- 43:33Speaker 2: Hm.
- 43:34Speaker 3: Both players taking their time this time, but both once
- 43:39Speaker 3: again answered pretty close together. Matt, you have put b
- 43:44Speaker 3: South Africa.
- 43:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I've wrapped myself in circles with this one. I
- 43:48Speaker 1: think my instinct was Germany at first, because I thought,
- 43:51Speaker 1: like matteos, it sounds a bit more like German code,
- 43:54Speaker 1: it maybe, But then I thought like colonialism.
- 43:57Speaker 3: Maybe. Yeah, I'm not sure honestly, but we'll find out.
- 44:01Speaker 3: Correct answer is a.
- 44:04Speaker 1: Portugal, the one I didn't even consider.
- 44:07Speaker 3: If Audre has put that she has come to two
- 44:10Speaker 3: steps behind. Audre has put also goes b South Africa
- 44:16Speaker 3: and is also wrong you.
- 44:18Speaker 2: So for colonialist reason, for colonialist reason.
- 44:22Speaker 3: Fair enough, fair enough. So far you've been pretty even killed,
- 44:25Speaker 3: both of you. Let's see if that continues. Here's our
- 44:28Speaker 3: next question. Which of these words means sweetly or innocently charming?
- 44:34Speaker 3: Which describes both of you as far as I'm concerned?
- 44:36Speaker 3: Is it a welsome, be woesome or cee winsome? All right, Matt,
- 44:46Speaker 3: you took a little longer than Andre did this time.
- 44:49Speaker 3: You have put welsome.
- 44:52Speaker 1: Yeah, it just you wasn't woesome unless it turns out
- 44:56Speaker 1: to be and then fifty shot then yeah, yeah.
- 45:00Speaker 3: All right, Well, the correct answer is see wins Once again,
- 45:05Speaker 3: Andre has a chance to close the gap. Audre has
- 45:08Speaker 3: Put wins gets it right, and it's it's terrifying. Two
- 45:13Speaker 3: steps behind you, Matt.
- 45:14Speaker 2: Oh, it's ominous.
- 45:18Speaker 3: All right, it's getting closer. But you can do this. Matt.
- 45:21Speaker 3: You've got three questions to get right, to get out
- 45:23Speaker 3: of here. Here is your next question. In what country
- 45:27Speaker 3: is the word bulla macunka humorously used to refer to
- 45:31Speaker 3: any remote place. Is it a South Africa, be Australia
- 45:36Speaker 3: or see England? Matt, you have put Australia.
- 45:43Speaker 1: Yeah, it feels like it's Australia. It can't be England.
- 45:47Speaker 1: I just know it can't be.
- 45:48Speaker 3: So once again, fifty to fifty shot.
- 45:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm trying to imagine it being said in an
- 45:53Speaker 2: Australian accent in my mind, and I.
- 45:56Speaker 3: Yeah, that's bulla makanka might exact. We'll see it does
- 46:01Speaker 3: sound a little yeah, good fit, We'll see. The correct
- 46:04Speaker 3: answer is Australia, exactly right. Matt comes to within two
- 46:08Speaker 3: steps of home. Andre has Put goes Australia also and
- 46:13Speaker 3: stays the two steps behind pursuit. It's very hot. Here
- 46:19Speaker 3: is your next question. Which of these figures does not
- 46:23Speaker 3: appear on the cover of the Beatles Sergeant Pepper album.
- 46:28Speaker 3: Is it a Abraham Lincoln? B. May West or C.
- 46:31Speaker 3: George Bernard Shaw? All right, Matt, you have put May West?
- 46:44Speaker 1: Now I'm thinking maybe she was because it was like
- 46:46Speaker 1: around about the time where she would have been a
- 46:47Speaker 1: pop culture figure. But I thought they were mostly like
- 46:50Speaker 1: heroes and idols who were on the not murderous.
- 46:54Speaker 3: Well, we'll see. The correct answer is a Abraham Lincoln.
- 47:00Speaker 1: I remember Abraham Lincoln being on that.
- 47:03Speaker 3: If Audre has put a she is now one step
- 47:06Speaker 3: behind you. Audre has put Abraham Lincoln and is now
- 47:12Speaker 3: right on your tail.
- 47:14Speaker 1: What the Beatles doing putting May West on an album cover?
- 47:16Speaker 1: Those boys should be ashamed, not.
- 47:20Speaker 2: As ashamed as if they would have put a yank
- 47:22Speaker 2: on there.
- 47:25Speaker 1: Point taken?
- 47:27Speaker 3: All right, well, Matt, you gotta get this right to
- 47:30Speaker 3: stay in the game. Uh, or hope that Audre gets
- 47:33Speaker 3: it wrong. But there are only two questions away from home.
- 47:36Speaker 3: So here is your next which work by Samuel Beckett
- 47:40Speaker 3: has been described as a play in which nothing happens twice.
- 47:46Speaker 3: Is it a waiting for GOODO b endgame? Or see
- 47:49Speaker 3: Happy Days? Matt answers very quickly, and Audre gets in
- 47:57Speaker 3: just in time. You have put a waiting for GOODO.
- 48:03Speaker 3: I think that's how this play is being described. Happy
- 48:07Speaker 3: Days is a sitcom? Well we shall see. The correct
- 48:12Speaker 3: answer is he waiting for goodo? Well done? You are
- 48:16Speaker 3: now one step away from home. Audra has put goes
- 48:21Speaker 3: wrong with Happy Days and is now two steps behind you.
- 48:25Speaker 2: I was like, I'm sure there's something. It can't be
- 48:28Speaker 2: the only one that I've heard of. Yeah, it must
- 48:32Speaker 2: be something else, a miss.
- 48:33Speaker 3: I've done scenes from Waiting for GOODO and acting class.
- 48:38Speaker 3: It is literally just two guys talking for the whole play.
- 48:42Speaker 3: It is there.
- 48:43Speaker 1: Nothing happens shows up, not once, no.
- 48:47Speaker 3: No on. But having said that, there is a production
- 48:51Speaker 3: with Keanu Reeves and Alex Winters from Bill and Ted.
- 48:54Speaker 3: So Bill and Ted are waiting for GOODO. It's happening.
- 48:58Speaker 3: It's real. So I'm excited to see that. But anyway,
- 49:01Speaker 3: neither here nor there. Matt, you are one question away
- 49:04Speaker 3: from getting through with your two step advantage. Audrey, you
- 49:07Speaker 3: are two steps from catching him. Here is your next question.
- 49:10Speaker 3: The name of what entertainment venue can be used to
- 49:14Speaker 3: describe a group of aircraft engaged in spectacular flying? Is
- 49:19Speaker 3: it a cinema, B theater, C circus. Matt has put theater.
- 49:30Speaker 1: Yeah, don't know this. I was expecting a different word
- 49:34Speaker 1: to a pea, but then none of them did, and
- 49:36Speaker 1: so I went with.
- 49:37Speaker 3: The Yeah, I mean I would go with theater. The
- 49:41Speaker 3: only thing that worries me is theater of war. So
- 49:44Speaker 3: maybe it was reserved for more serious things. But let's
- 49:47Speaker 3: find out. If you're right, you go through, and you
- 49:50Speaker 3: get a two step advantage in the final chase. The
- 49:53Speaker 3: correct answer is C circus.
- 50:00Speaker 1: Can't bunch of clowns flying those planes.
- 50:03Speaker 2: If the python's flying circus.
- 50:06Speaker 3: If Audre gets this right, she is one step behind you,
- 50:09Speaker 3: and we have a one question shootout. Oudra has put
- 50:13Speaker 3: see circus. It's down to this. This is it, Matt.
- 50:18Speaker 3: You you gotta get this right, buddy, Yeah, I got it.
- 50:22Speaker 3: Here is your what I'm hoping is your last question,
- 50:25Speaker 3: because you get through. Which city's Great Fire of eighteen
- 50:28Speaker 3: seventy one started when Missus O'Leary's cow kicked over a lantern?
- 50:33Speaker 3: Is it a San Francisco, b Chicago or CE Boston?
- 50:38Speaker 2: I have no Sorry, I shouldn't be saying I should
- 50:43Speaker 2: just be I should just be sending in an answer.
- 50:45Speaker 3: The chasing Ooh, okay, that was close. Matt has put Boston.
- 50:54Speaker 1: It's a guess. I mean I kind of thought a
- 50:56Speaker 1: little bit Boston iration Missus O'Leary and kind of made that.
- 51:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I get why, But the correct answer is Chicago.
- 51:06Speaker 1: I'm afraid like the TV show, the TV show is
- 51:08Speaker 1: named after an event.
- 51:10Speaker 3: I knew that one, that the Great Fire of Chicago
- 51:13Speaker 3: started by Missus O'Leary's cow. Now did Audre know it?
- 51:18Speaker 3: Because if she's right, you get nothing. Audre has put
- 51:25Speaker 3: Boston goes wrong and we're still in the game. You
- 51:31Speaker 3: guys are just on the same plan existence and the
- 51:36Speaker 3: same All right, let's see if you can get through. Matt,
- 51:44Speaker 3: here is your next question. In which film does the
- 51:47Speaker 3: male lead gain the ability to hear thoughts? A little
- 51:53Speaker 3: women be women in love? See what Women Want? Audrew
- 52:04Speaker 3: got that in just in time. Matt, you have put
- 52:09Speaker 3: See what Women Want?
- 52:10Speaker 2: Again.
- 52:11Speaker 1: It's a coin toss because it's not little women. But
- 52:15Speaker 1: if what women want, that's to do with potentially hearing thoughts.
- 52:19Speaker 3: All right, Well, if you're right, you're going through to
- 52:22Speaker 3: the final chase with two steps advantage. In the final chase,
- 52:25Speaker 3: if not, Audre has the chance to catch you. The
- 52:29Speaker 3: correct answer is what women want. Come on, Bradley, well done,
- 52:39Speaker 3: Well done, Matt. Congratulations you won your individual chase, which
- 52:43Speaker 3: means you do get an advantage in the final chase.
- 52:45Speaker 3: Audre's just gonna have to work that much harder to
- 52:47Speaker 3: catch you.
- 52:48Speaker 2: M hmm.
- 52:49Speaker 1: Yeah, Matt has.
- 52:51Speaker 3: Made it to the final chase with a two step
- 52:53Speaker 3: head start on Audre. We're gonna go ahead and put
- 52:55Speaker 3: that up on the board. Matt, You're gonna have twenty questions,
- 53:00Speaker 3: answer as many correctly as you can to increase your
- 53:02Speaker 3: score as high as you possibly can. After you're done
- 53:05Speaker 3: with all twenty questions, it'll be Oudre's turn, and Ouder
- 53:08Speaker 3: will also have twenty questions in which she'll try.
- 53:11Speaker 1: To catch you.
- 53:13Speaker 3: If she succeeds, she wins yet another game. Yep. So,
- 53:19Speaker 3: and I know you're currently behind. So Matt, I'm gonna
- 53:21Speaker 3: give you the choice. Would you like questions at set
- 53:24Speaker 3: A or B?
- 53:26Speaker 1: Leaving it up to fate. Okay, let's go in order.
- 53:30Speaker 1: Let's say A.
- 53:31Speaker 3: Let's I'll go away, all right, Set A for Matt,
- 53:34Speaker 3: which means oder will get Set B. All right, there
- 53:37Speaker 3: is no time limit on this, however, I am only
- 53:41Speaker 3: gonna give you five seconds per question to answer, So
- 53:45Speaker 3: give me an answer as quick as you dare, and
- 53:49Speaker 3: best of luck. Matt.
- 53:50Speaker 2: Ready, I'm ready, Matt.
- 53:52Speaker 3: Your question start now. What's the catchphrase of bugs bunny?
- 53:58Speaker 1: What's up? Doc?

- 54:29Speaker 3: to Die?
- 54:31Speaker 2: Uh?
- 54:32Speaker 1: Bruno?
- 54:33Speaker 2: Ma's wrong?
- 54:34Speaker 3: Lana del Rey? Where on the body is the funny bone?
- 54:38Speaker 1: The elbow?
- 54:39Speaker 3: I'll give that to you. It's the arm. What English
- 54:41Speaker 3: monument includes the heelstone?
- 54:44Speaker 1: Ooh stonehenge?

- 1:01:33Speaker 1: I mean, we both did we both did good in
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: the final chase. We both got like a bunch of
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: right answers. I do want to talk about your reaction
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: being similar to Jemember when Dennis Reynolds is on family
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: Fortunes or what you call it in America family family,
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: and like the buzzers going off and he gets shaken
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: and rattled and like he can't get any more questions
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: right from from that moment. Yeah, you had like this
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: run at the beginning where you got like seven in
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: a row, and then as soon as you got one
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: pretty difficult question wrong, Oh, you then messed up ones
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: that I think you knew, but you were like up, Nope, Ah.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: I got one pretty straightforward question wrong, and from that
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: point my whole world was shaken.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: I think you can tell on the audio.
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: And I'm fine with it. So I hope it's funny.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: I think it plays out as funny that it reminded
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: me of Dennis Reynolds, and that is a comedy performance.
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: Oh, thank you. I can't.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: But three two though. I'm on the I'm on the trail.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: It's gonna be three to three next time.
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, enough of your vanity, Yes, braggadociousness, I'm still winning.
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: Coming up on the feed, we have some super fun episodes.
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: We have Fiber Arts.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: Yes, oh my goodness. That's such a unique episode with
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: an incredible guest and a lot of fun in a hobby.
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: Yeah. It's the type of thing where you're like, can
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: you make fandom games around this? Yes? Turns out yes,
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: turns out yes, And they're incredibly.
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: Fun and probably one of my favorite lists of anything
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: in the five three to two game ever.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: Oh, you had so much fun with that. Yeah, that
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: was a blast. We had fun with it, but you
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: especially had fun.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: And then we also have Disney Channel Yes, ooh, my youth.
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: The memories, the memories. Oh, I'm just standing there. I'm
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: doing a weird arm movement that they're going to animate
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: as Mickey ears. It's a beautiful experience. Everyone has an
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: album coming out, It's so fun. It's such a rich
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: fandom world that is specifically. I know Disney Channel was
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: going before, and I know Disney Channel is still going
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: to this day, but there was something happening in the
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: two thousands that was just very Disney Channel is everywhere,
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: uh huh a prominence.
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: So keep an eye out for both of those pandemoniums
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: coming up in May. There will also be a new
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: episode of press Play. I'm so excited for this one.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: They are looking at a movie that means a lot
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: to me. It's Pokemon, the first movie Pokemon, the first
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: movie where it all began, at least in movie form.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: Oh, I didn't watch this as a child, but I
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: watched it as an adult trying to connect with my
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: inner child. Still a beautiful experience.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: And I've got to say I genuinely being a fan
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: of press Play and listening to the episodes month by month,
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: I've kind of been like, I don't think I'm in
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: a position to call out Drew and Jason for their
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: takes here, But why is no one else calling out
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: Drew and Jason for how good They're saying these terrible movies.
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: But then we get to Pokemon the first movie, which
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: is subjectively an awful movie, but I have so much
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: nostalgic attachmentto it that I'm like, it's a great movie.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: Mm hmm. We're all the same.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: Maybe we're all the same. It's subjectivity all the way down.
