- 0:58Speaker 5: Yeah, he might be traveling Nola's place.
- 1:01Speaker 4: And and the young lady who is talking is miss
- 1:04Speaker 4: Lisa Odie, which she's might not make it through the show.
- 1:09Speaker 3: We'll see how that.
- 1:11Speaker 5: Course, the audience is not shocked at all.
- 1:13Speaker 3: All right, we have we have a return guest and.
- 1:19Speaker 4: That I'm always excited to see and and just kind
- 1:26Speaker 4: of marvel at the idea that like she would actually
- 1:28Speaker 4: call us and say, you know, she's gonna be here,
- 1:31Speaker 4: and yes, I feel especially like it's just it's just
- 1:38Speaker 4: it's like it's running into a star to me. You know,
- 1:41Speaker 4: she is a star. That's how that's She's.
- 1:44Speaker 5: A She's a boxing legend. Do you want me to
- 1:47Speaker 5: go on a little bit more. She you know, is
- 1:51Speaker 5: the face of of you know, the generation of women's
- 1:55Speaker 5: sports actually coming to fruition in my opinion. And she
- 2:00Speaker 5: is a repeat offender tonight on our podcast, which tells us,
- 2:04Speaker 5: you know that she she she likes, she might like
- 2:07Speaker 5: us a little bit. She also has her her faithful dog,
- 2:10Speaker 5: Champ with your and so our guest tonight is Christy Martin.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Welcome Christy.
- 2:16Speaker 6: It's always great to be with you. Guys.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Well, thank you for coming. And just just so everybody knows,
- 2:24Speaker 3: here we go, what was Champ right came to me
- 2:29Speaker 3: and would not come to Lisa. That's just just just
- 2:32Speaker 3: for the.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Public to know, just just so that I let everybody know.
- 2:36Speaker 5: Oh man, Christy, you might have to go get a
- 2:39Speaker 5: check up for Champ Cham. It might not be feeling
- 2:41Speaker 5: all the time.
- 2:44Speaker 3: That's what it was. Christy.
- 2:47Speaker 4: I have a I have a question and it's and
- 2:50Speaker 4: it's kind of off the off the path that from
- 2:54Speaker 4: your sport, but I'm gonna use it as a as
- 2:57Speaker 4: sports in general.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Caitlin Clark.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Me personally, I think she she has done everything possible for.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Women's basketball.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Now however you judge her, however, people judge her on
- 3:18Speaker 4: being the best player or not. And I know the
- 3:23Speaker 4: whole racial piece of it that that's that's in it.
- 3:27Speaker 3: I'm not even interested in any.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Part of of of that at all. But when you
- 3:35Speaker 4: see somebody like that, that's a that I would I
- 3:37Speaker 4: would say, is like a pioneer in that sport.
- 3:40Speaker 3: What what do you think? I mean?
- 3:42Speaker 4: Is there any reflection of like can you see yourself
- 3:46Speaker 4: in that space in doing that for women's boxing?
- 3:51Speaker 6: Wow? Well, thank you, there's awesome. She she to me,
- 3:54Speaker 6: is she's the person that that elevated the w n
- 3:58Speaker 6: b A to to that next level.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Yes, And.
- 4:02Speaker 6: You know, again, the racial thing really just.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Sucks, to be honest, It does, does it does?
- 4:07Speaker 6: She is a great player, she's a great marketer, but
- 4:11Speaker 6: she is a great player and she just happens to
- 4:15Speaker 6: be white. And I think too much is made of
- 4:18Speaker 6: the race thing, honestly, But why other players that are
- 4:24Speaker 6: in the WNBA right now or maybe have been can't
- 4:28Speaker 6: understand where she's taking this league and support her. I
- 4:33Speaker 6: have no clue because if she said today, I'm not
- 4:36Speaker 6: playing basketball ever again, she's always going to be Caitlin Clark.
- 4:40Speaker 6: She's always going to have achieved way more than any
- 4:43Speaker 6: other female basketball player at this time, right and she's
- 4:46Speaker 6: made a shit ton of money. Yeah, so she probably
- 4:49Speaker 6: doesn't need to play basketball ever again. Where would the
- 4:52Speaker 6: WNBA be Would it still be selling out arenas? Would
- 4:57Speaker 6: they be getting this huge deal of TV?
- 5:00Speaker 4: Nope, Nope, I don't and I and I and I
- 5:03Speaker 4: really don't. I really don't really understand, Like if that,
- 5:10Speaker 4: if that's a person that I'm gonna go against, black, white, green, yellow, orange, whatever,
- 5:16Speaker 4: to me, that's a challenge and nothing else. There's there's
- 5:20Speaker 4: nothing else in that. There's nothing else like, oh, well,
- 5:24Speaker 4: they're pumping him up because he's not good or this
- 5:28Speaker 4: or that. I don't think that you can get the
- 5:30Speaker 4: kind of notoriety of those type of athletes without being
- 5:34Speaker 4: that athlete, you know, like you can't, like you can't
- 5:37Speaker 4: be Caitlyn Clark without being a great basketball player.
- 5:42Speaker 3: I don't care what color you are. She didn't.
- 5:46Speaker 4: There's nobody like just saying, oh, let's just elevate her,
- 5:48Speaker 4: let's make her seem like she's great.
- 5:50Speaker 3: No, watch her.
- 5:52Speaker 6: They ran big, this one white female that they want
- 5:57Speaker 6: to be the face of the wig she has. I mean,
- 6:00Speaker 6: she goes out there night after night, puts up crazy numbers,
- 6:04Speaker 6: has herd team winning again. Why everybody's not on her bandwagon?
- 6:09Speaker 6: I don't know, But it doesn't mean because you're on
- 6:11Speaker 6: her bandwagon, you don't want to kick her. But every
- 6:13Speaker 6: time it's playing, or you don't want to store on her,
- 6:16Speaker 6: you don't want to steal the ball, or you don't
- 6:17Speaker 6: want to block her shot. Of course you should want
- 6:19Speaker 6: to do all that. You should want to do that
- 6:20Speaker 6: ten times more because it is her. I mean, it's
- 6:23Speaker 6: the whole Larry Bird effect.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Yes, yes, yes, yeah, I do.
- 6:28Speaker 4: I do remember, and it is exactly I feel like
- 6:32Speaker 4: it is exactly like that, And there was really not
- 6:36Speaker 4: like I don't really the racial piece of it was
- 6:41Speaker 4: simply because he was white and he was so good,
- 6:44Speaker 4: you know, because I don't even think those players particularly
- 6:49Speaker 4: care because you got white guys on your team, So
- 6:52Speaker 4: how are you going to talk about the one that
- 6:54Speaker 4: you can't cover?
- 6:55Speaker 3: You know that that can out shoot you.
- 6:59Speaker 4: And to me, I just think that it's it's it's
- 7:02Speaker 4: jealousy of a skill set that somebody has put the
- 7:08Speaker 4: time in to be so good. So they're as good
- 7:13Speaker 4: as anybody's ever been. And now you're looking at them
- 7:16Speaker 4: and they don't because they don't look a certain color
- 7:18Speaker 4: to you, or because they're not the right that you
- 7:24Speaker 4: don't like them for whatever the reason, I just don't
- 7:27Speaker 4: think that you can do that. You have to see
- 7:30Speaker 4: the greatness in it.
- 7:32Speaker 6: Absolutely. If we want to take this back to boxing,
- 7:34Speaker 6: and we can say, wow, Leila Ali came out. She's
- 7:38Speaker 6: Muhammad Ali's daughter, she's black, She's getting all this notoriety,
- 7:41Speaker 6: she's getting everything because she's Leila Ali. But guess what,
- 7:44Speaker 6: Laila Ali went to the gym. She learned how to fight,
- 7:47Speaker 6: and she kicked my butt. So, you know, she showed me.
- 7:50Speaker 6: Even though I was sure that I could beat her.
- 7:52Speaker 6: You know, I was old and she was young, and
- 7:54Speaker 6: he was big. I have a ton of excuses, but
- 7:58Speaker 6: she kicked my butt. She did, yeah, so I had to,
- 8:02Speaker 6: whether I liked it or not, deal with give her bath.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, and.
- 8:07Speaker 6: And to me it was like the at that particular
- 8:09Speaker 6: fight was the changing of the guard, you know. Now Okay, Leila,
- 8:13Speaker 6: now women's boxing is yours. You take it to that
- 8:16Speaker 6: next level. Yeah, I think it kind of fell to
- 8:19Speaker 6: the to the wayside, and now we have Amanda Serrano
- 8:22Speaker 6: and Katie Taylor who are bringing women's boxing to that
- 8:25Speaker 6: next level.
- 8:26Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, I'm gonna switch gears here, okay for a second,
- 8:29Speaker 5: But so Christy, I'm gonna go back to April fifteenth,
- 8:32Speaker 5: nineteen ninety six. Is that a significant date for you?
- 8:36Speaker 6: I think so? Yes.
- 8:37Speaker 5: Well, you made history as the first female boxer to
- 8:41Speaker 5: grace the cover of Sports Illustrated, right.
- 8:43Speaker 6: The only female boxer only ooh.
- 8:45Speaker 5: Only thank you? Thank you well now, but not now,
- 8:48Speaker 5: because thirty years later, you returned to the magazine Spotlight
- 8:51Speaker 5: for the winter twenty twenty five issue with Sidney Sweeney. Correct, correct, Okay,
- 8:56Speaker 5: what was that moment like for you coming full circle
- 8:58Speaker 5: with Sports Illustrated?
- 9:00Speaker 6: It was It was a lot of fun. And the
- 9:01Speaker 6: crazy fact I wore the same trunks, oh, same trunks
- 9:06Speaker 6: from nineteen ninety six I wore in twenty twenty five.
- 9:09Speaker 5: That's that's a braggy point.
- 9:10Speaker 6: You know, well you really want to know the truth.
- 9:13Speaker 6: The waistband was dry rot, So whatever size I was,
- 9:19Speaker 6: that is the truth. But it was really cool that,
- 9:21Speaker 6: you know, I told them. They said, we're going to
- 9:23Speaker 6: get this Sports Illustrated again as well. You guys, I
- 9:26Speaker 6: actually had the same trunks and they're like, well, bring
- 9:29Speaker 6: those trunks. We want you to have those coal coal.
- 9:32Speaker 6: So that was awesome. So I am actually the only
- 9:34Speaker 6: female boxer to ever be on the cover.
- 9:35Speaker 5: Wow, I'm glad you never got it twice, Yes, twice.
- 9:39Speaker 3: That that is special.
- 9:40Speaker 4: I mean, that is that's that is something that like
- 9:43Speaker 4: no one can take from you, no matter what exactly.
- 9:46Speaker 6: But you know what, they don't buy magazines anymore, true people.
- 9:50Speaker 6: You know, they look on online to see magazines. You'd say, oh,
- 9:52Speaker 6: I was on the cover Sports Illustrated, which is a
- 9:54Speaker 6: big deal to us.
- 9:55Speaker 5: Yeah yeah.
- 9:57Speaker 6: These these kids today like, oh yeah, that's true. But yeah,
- 10:01Speaker 6: but I.
- 10:01Speaker 5: Guess you could probably find it online, right, you could
- 10:03Speaker 5: find the cover.
- 10:04Speaker 6: Oh yeah, you can actually buy the magazine. Yeah yeah.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:08Speaker 6: It's not as big as it was back in the nineties.
- 10:11Speaker 6: It was a big deal in the nineties.
- 10:12Speaker 3: What what is what is your outside of boxing?
- 10:15Speaker 4: What what is your what is your favorite sport? What
- 10:19Speaker 4: is your favorite sport and if it's if if not
- 10:23Speaker 4: female sport, what is also your favorite female sport?
- 10:28Speaker 6: My favorite thing to play.
- 10:30Speaker 5: Or just to do or to watch to watch probably.
- 10:33Speaker 6: Basketball, okay, you know basketball for sure. Yeah.
- 10:37Speaker 4: And do you have any other sport that you play?
- 10:44Speaker 6: I well, I really like to play racketball, okay, but
- 10:47Speaker 6: I'm not good at it, but I like to play
- 10:49Speaker 6: because I like to see hard I can hit the ball.
- 10:51Speaker 6: I'm like, just hit it as hard as you can.
- 10:54Speaker 6: And that's really not the smartest way to do it,
- 10:56Speaker 6: but that's what I like.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Oh, Okay, I was just I was just scary.
- 11:00Speaker 5: Doesn't surprise me with her boxing background that she wants
- 11:02Speaker 5: to hit it as hard as she can, regardless of whether.
- 11:05Speaker 3: It's work involved in that too.
- 11:08Speaker 6: There, Yeah, there is. You have to you know, try
- 11:10Speaker 6: to do the angles and you know, outsmart your opponent.
- 11:14Speaker 4: When I talk about when I think about, tell me
- 11:17Speaker 4: a little bit about or tell us a little bit about,
- 11:20Speaker 4: like what was what was training and let's say for
- 11:24Speaker 4: the biggest fight, the biggest fights that you had, what
- 11:28Speaker 4: was the training, Like what was what was the routine?
- 11:31Speaker 3: How early were you up? How how just the whole
- 11:34Speaker 3: routine if you can tell us.
- 11:35Speaker 6: So I would be up by six, do my roadwork,
- 11:38Speaker 6: which would be like three and a half miles, and
- 11:41Speaker 6: then I would do wind sprints. Some mornings, I wake
- 11:44Speaker 6: up at four, I'm going to go run because I
- 11:46Speaker 6: felt like I'm one upping my opponent. I'm at four,
- 11:49Speaker 6: she's still sleep. So then then I would go to
- 11:53Speaker 6: the gym and spar and then later in the evening
- 11:57Speaker 6: I would go back and do a full circuit of workout,
- 12:00Speaker 6: which would be shadow boxing, hand pads, hitting the heavy bag,
- 12:04Speaker 6: jumping rope, speedbag, you know, just all the things that
- 12:07Speaker 6: are in the gym. Do about twenty five rounds.
- 12:10Speaker 4: I was gonna say how long how long would that
- 12:13Speaker 4: particular that evening workout?
- 12:15Speaker 3: Like how long would that take?
- 12:16Speaker 6: Like about an hour and a half. You know, when
- 12:18Speaker 6: these people tell you they're the gym for three and
- 12:20Speaker 6: four hours, I don't know what they're doing because there's
- 12:22Speaker 6: no way you can hold that, you know, that intensity
- 12:26Speaker 6: for three hours, There's just no way. So I don't
- 12:29Speaker 6: know what they're doing. You know, maybe they're working at
- 12:31Speaker 6: a very slow pace. I thought everything needed to happen fast.
- 12:36Speaker 3: I'm with you on that.
- 12:37Speaker 5: Breaks take breaks. Okay, Well, let's go back to your career,
- 12:41Speaker 5: or actually back to twenty twenty two. You wrote a
- 12:44Speaker 5: memoir titled Fighting for Survival and it documented your journey
- 12:49Speaker 5: with abuse throughout your lifetime. And you also have a
- 12:52Speaker 5: biography title Christy Martin, How the coal Miner's Daughter fought
- 12:55Speaker 5: her way to boxing glory and changed women's sports forever.
- 12:58Speaker 5: And that's pinned by r LS pen Is that right?
- 13:01Speaker 6: So that's you know. I saw that on It's Amazon
- 13:04Speaker 6: or one of those places. It is not me. The
- 13:07Speaker 6: book part of it that I was a part of
- 13:10Speaker 6: is was written by Ron Borgis and myself, and that
- 13:12Speaker 6: is Fighting for Survival. Okay, but yeah, no, I saw
- 13:16Speaker 6: like four other books. Wow, And I'm like, wow, where
- 13:19Speaker 6: do they even get this information? Because no one talked
- 13:21Speaker 6: to me?
- 13:21Speaker 3: Okay, but can somebody do that?
- 13:24Speaker 6: Unfortunately I guess they can.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Wow they have.
- 13:27Speaker 5: Sorry I didn't I didn't realize that. But but your
- 13:31Speaker 5: actually your memoir is that what the movie Christy was
- 13:33Speaker 5: basically you know, following or was it more your personal stories? How?
- 13:38Speaker 5: How did they develop the script for the movie.
- 13:41Speaker 6: So let me say the book is real. If anyone
- 13:45Speaker 6: reads the book by Ron Borgeous to myself, that's that
- 13:48Speaker 6: is beginning to end. That's the real story. Okay, the
- 13:51Speaker 6: movie it's just real, right, pretty much. But some of
- 13:56Speaker 6: the people are combined, like you know, like they maybe
- 14:00Speaker 6: take two or three people and make it into one person.
- 14:04Speaker 6: Some of the situations, some of the experiences were a
- 14:06Speaker 6: little out of order just to make it fit into
- 14:08Speaker 6: the movie. But it's pretty close.
- 14:12Speaker 5: Okay.
- 14:12Speaker 4: Yeah, How does it feel to even talk about the
- 14:17Speaker 4: fact that you do Now at this point, you have
- 14:19Speaker 4: a you have movies out there that are about your
- 14:24Speaker 4: life story?
- 14:24Speaker 3: What is that? What does that feel like?
- 14:27Speaker 6: I am a coal miner's daughter from a little bitty
- 14:29Speaker 6: town up in West Virginia. It's crazy. I mean, who,
- 14:35Speaker 6: in their wildest dreams things a movie is going to
- 14:37Speaker 6: be made about them. So I thought it was important though,
- 14:41Speaker 6: to do the movie. And I hope that people it's
- 14:44Speaker 6: not a boxing movie, it's a life movie. And I
- 14:47Speaker 6: hope that people don't miss the significance of the movie
- 14:51Speaker 6: that it's about domestic violence, it's about sexuality, it's about
- 14:54Speaker 6: you know, there's a little drug addiction in there that
- 14:56Speaker 6: is overcoming, right, Like to me, I'm the ultimate and
- 15:00Speaker 6: I and I kind of made it. So that's what
- 15:03Speaker 6: I hope people take away from the movie that if
- 15:05Speaker 6: she can do it, I can do it.
- 15:07Speaker 4: I wonder I wonder if if because I would I
- 15:11Speaker 4: would say my situation not being like your situation. But
- 15:15Speaker 4: I think most athletes, I think have have a drive,
- 15:21Speaker 4: something motivates them, something create, something that has happened creates
- 15:25Speaker 4: this drive for them. And I wonder, like if people
- 15:31Speaker 4: really realize going through it, like let's say somebody I
- 15:36Speaker 4: don't know, like say a college athlete who wants to
- 15:38Speaker 4: play in the in the NFL, some of the things
- 15:40Speaker 4: he or she may have gone through may be the
- 15:43Speaker 4: thing that that it gives you the ride there, that
- 15:47Speaker 4: that motivates you to get there. Do you remember Do
- 15:51Speaker 4: you actually remember like why or how you got there,
- 15:55Speaker 4: what motivated you to get there?
- 15:56Speaker 3: Do you forget it?
- 15:57Speaker 4: Because like for me, like the work that I put in,
- 16:01Speaker 4: you know, I didn't some of it I didn't have
- 16:03Speaker 4: a choice, and most of it I would do on
- 16:06Speaker 4: my own.
- 16:07Speaker 3: But I got used to doing it.
- 16:09Speaker 4: I realized that, you know, somebody was pushing me, you know,
- 16:13Speaker 4: and I even when I didn't like it, when I
- 16:16Speaker 4: look back at it, I'm like, man, if I don't
- 16:19Speaker 4: if I didn't have that, maybe I don't get there,
- 16:24Speaker 4: you know. And I just wonder, like if people understand
- 16:28Speaker 4: how how that outside motivation.
- 16:32Speaker 3: Moves you to find success.
- 16:36Speaker 6: I think I was angry, but I don't think I
- 16:39Speaker 6: ever realized why I was angry. Oh okay until after
- 16:42Speaker 6: the fact, and really after being shot insteaded and you know,
- 16:46Speaker 6: left four dead, then that's when I realized, Wow, I
- 16:49Speaker 6: felt really angry, and it's no wonder I felt angry,
- 16:52Speaker 6: you know that I started to really think back about Wow,
- 16:56Speaker 6: you know, I was really pissed off of everybody. But
- 17:00Speaker 6: it's no wonder because you know, I had this person.
- 17:02Speaker 6: Every time something good would happen, he would tell me
- 17:05Speaker 6: why it only happened because of something he had done,
- 17:09Speaker 6: or it wasn't it wasn't anything to do with me,
- 17:12Speaker 6: it was some other reason why it was good, or
- 17:15Speaker 6: or I was never I was never good enough. So
- 17:18Speaker 6: I think, you know, it was just angry. I was angry.
- 17:21Speaker 6: So when as soon as I crossed through those ropes,
- 17:24Speaker 6: it was a totally different person in there. I was
- 17:27Speaker 6: just mad. I just wanted to hurt people. But I
- 17:30Speaker 6: loved it.
- 17:31Speaker 3: I don't know a lot.
- 17:32Speaker 6: I mean I loved it. I loved my job, and
- 17:34Speaker 6: I love I wish, you know, I wish I wasn't
- 17:37Speaker 6: fifty eight. I wish I was like thirty eight. I
- 17:39Speaker 6: would still be doing it if I was fifty eight,
- 17:43Speaker 6: but I had a stroke. If I had not a stroke,
- 17:44Speaker 6: I was still probably be in there fighting. If they
- 17:46Speaker 6: would license to me, I'd still be in there fighting.
- 17:48Speaker 4: Wow, I see, yeah, see, I've had enough.
- 17:54Speaker 5: Well, I mean, I guess you're a little bit a
- 17:57Speaker 5: little bit older than than Christy. Maybe that's your excuse,
- 18:01Speaker 5: but so you know, you're speaking of your anger and
- 18:04Speaker 5: how that motivates you, you know, with the domestic abuse.
- 18:08Speaker 5: So that kind of also takes me to the next
- 18:11Speaker 5: question or actually just a statement that I would like
- 18:13Speaker 5: for you to discuss. You have a nonprofit called Christie's Champs,
- 18:18Speaker 5: and it's really evolved over the years. Can you tell
- 18:21Speaker 5: us about that organization?
- 18:23Speaker 6: So, Christy's Champs. We founded Christie Champs in twenty fifteen,
- 18:28Speaker 6: but really over just the last year. Kelly Dunbar, who's
- 18:33Speaker 6: actually from here in Charleston has really come on board
- 18:35Speaker 6: and she's the vice president now and really helping. We're
- 18:39Speaker 6: going all over the country speaking. We're putting computers in
- 18:43Speaker 6: domestic violence shelters. We're doing starting overbins for people that
- 18:48Speaker 6: are getting ready to leave the shelter so they have
- 18:50Speaker 6: something when they go to the apartment. We do gas cards,
- 18:56Speaker 6: anything that we can do to help someone. We're doing
- 18:59Speaker 6: to make it just a little bit easier for them
- 19:01Speaker 6: to transition out and to be on their own.
- 19:05Speaker 4: Is there is there anything that you feel like you
- 19:09Speaker 4: truly want to do now that you haven't had a
- 19:15Speaker 4: chance to Is it whether it's helping a calls or whatever,
- 19:20Speaker 4: But is there something out there now that you're waiting
- 19:24Speaker 4: to get the opportunity to do it?
- 19:27Speaker 6: You know what? The truth? The truth is, I said,
- 19:30Speaker 6: if I would win the lottery, that big one that's
- 19:32Speaker 6: like seven hundred million, my now, I all would do
- 19:34Speaker 6: is wake up every day and say to God, who
- 19:37Speaker 6: can I help today? And that's what's important to me.
- 19:40Speaker 6: That's I've done everything for me, so why can't I
- 19:43Speaker 6: just help somebody else every day? And that's really what
- 19:46Speaker 6: I'm trying to do now And Chrissy's Champs. That's that's
- 19:49Speaker 6: what we do. We just try to help somebody every day,
- 19:52Speaker 6: whether it's putting computers in there to start like I said,
- 19:56Speaker 6: the starting overbins. Anyway, we're doing in October, we're doing
- 20:02Speaker 6: a pet seminar because not every domestic violence shelter will
- 20:06Speaker 6: allow people to bring their pets. It's a crazy statistic,
- 20:09Speaker 6: but fifty of the people stay in a relationship, a
- 20:14Speaker 6: domestic violence relationship because they cannot leave with their dogs
- 20:17Speaker 6: or their cats, their pet.
- 20:18Speaker 5: I believe that.
- 20:19Speaker 6: So you know, anybody that knows me knows Champ. So
- 20:23Speaker 6: Champ is sponsoring a part of this pets. It's a
- 20:28Speaker 6: it's a pet fundraiser for one of the shelters, Similal
- 20:32Speaker 6: Safehouse down in Florida.
- 20:34Speaker 5: That's so amazing.
- 20:35Speaker 6: Yeah, but you know it's it's great. It's great. We
- 20:39Speaker 6: we work with the Way up in Raleigh County which
- 20:41Speaker 6: services Roley County, Fayette, Nicholas Summers and we're that's where
- 20:47Speaker 6: we're gonna do with the gas cards that we're going
- 20:49Speaker 6: to raise awareness for Wednesday to to give get up
- 20:53Speaker 6: with the gas cards because the ladies might need they
- 20:55Speaker 6: need to go somewhere but they don't have gas. Well,
- 20:57Speaker 6: they might need to go to a doctor's appointment, they
- 20:59Speaker 6: might need to go to a job interview, they might
- 21:01Speaker 6: need to go to a courterering. All you need is
- 21:05Speaker 6: three three gallons of gas. So we're gonna make sure
- 21:07Speaker 6: they have gas.
- 21:08Speaker 5: Now, I want to you just touched on that, Christy,
- 21:10Speaker 5: and we'll go ahead and jump to that. I had
- 21:12Speaker 5: it on my list of questions. But so you're going
- 21:15Speaker 5: to be the headline on the fourth annual Women, Women
- 21:17Speaker 5: Making a Difference Night at Gomart Park here in Charleston,
- 21:20Speaker 5: which is going to be Wednesday. Of course, the podcast
- 21:22Speaker 5: airs the day after, but we're live on Facebook so
- 21:26Speaker 5: people can hear you right now. So everybody listen up.
- 21:29Speaker 5: But you're actually you just you just talked about the
- 21:31Speaker 5: gas cards. So what is your vision for that for
- 21:34Speaker 5: that particular night in collecting some donations for a way.
- 21:39Speaker 6: So people can come. They can bring a gas card
- 21:42Speaker 6: Shell gas station and I'm not promoting Shell, but they
- 21:45Speaker 6: specifically do a gas card just for gas. You can
- 21:49Speaker 6: go to like Little General Circle K and get a
- 21:54Speaker 6: gift card from that specific store, but they can use
- 21:58Speaker 6: that for gas or food or anything else. But to
- 22:01Speaker 6: get a specific gas card, you can go to Shell
- 22:04Speaker 6: and we're gonna give that donation back to a way. Okay,
- 22:08Speaker 6: and well we will do at least one thousand dollars,
- 22:11Speaker 6: So that's forty twenty five dollars gift cards.
- 22:14Speaker 5: Do you know what the acronym away stands for? Okay,
- 22:17Speaker 5: I was wondering. I should have looked that up myself,
- 22:20Speaker 5: but I thought, oh, Christy might know, so i'd ask you.
- 22:21Speaker 5: But but it definitely is to benefit you know, the
- 22:24Speaker 5: women that have left the shelter after domestic abuse situations.
- 22:28Speaker 6: Correct, absolutely, and they're they're all about helping and the
- 22:32Speaker 6: they have a safehouse. It's it's close to Roddy County.
- 22:37Speaker 6: It's in Roddy County. I don't want to tell you where.
- 22:39Speaker 3: It is, but it is.
- 22:40Speaker 5: If it's a safe house, you probably shouldn't.
- 22:42Speaker 3: And so are you all taking donations for.
- 22:48Speaker 6: So we take the gas card itself if someone has that,
- 22:51Speaker 6: or we can do donations. You can donate to Christy's
- 22:54Speaker 6: Champs on through through cash app, through Venmo, basically anyway
- 23:01Speaker 6: you have money, we can take it from you and
- 23:03Speaker 6: take that money that will go to purchase the gift card.
- 23:06Speaker 6: The gas cards for a way.
- 23:09Speaker 3: All right, well, I'll make a I'll make a donation.
- 23:11Speaker 6: To it, thank you.
- 23:12Speaker 4: Yeah, we'll try to figure out how to how to
- 23:15Speaker 4: make that work, but I'll I'll definitely do that for you,
- 23:18Speaker 4: perfect thank you.
- 23:19Speaker 5: Yes, yes, so tell us about Champ you're traveling Betty here.
- 23:23Speaker 5: I would love to put him on on live Facebook.
- 23:28Speaker 5: How does he do, Christy with all these different places
- 23:32Speaker 5: and and and people that you you know, you see
- 23:34Speaker 5: on a on a daily and weekly bait there he comes.
- 23:38Speaker 5: How does he travel with you? Does he do? And
- 23:40Speaker 5: he seems perfectly fine with us here? He so he
- 23:43Speaker 5: seems like he's camp.
- 23:47Speaker 6: Doesn't meet any strangers.
- 23:49Speaker 5: He went to.
- 23:51Speaker 6: Which is the World Series this year?
- 23:54Speaker 7: What?
- 23:54Speaker 6: Yes? He was a Game four in l A And
- 23:58Speaker 6: he went to a NASCAR race in Phoenix.
- 24:01Speaker 4: And he doesn't like like with all that noise, like
- 24:03Speaker 4: it doesn't do anything. He just chills out like he's
- 24:06Speaker 4: doing with you.
- 24:07Speaker 6: He's just chilling. He's been to fights in Madison Square Garden,
- 24:10Speaker 6: He's been to fights in Vegas, like, yes.
- 24:15Speaker 3: I'm just wondering what he's thinking.
- 24:17Speaker 5: Maybe I could get adopted. I want to go to
- 24:18Speaker 5: all those events with champs. Maybe Christy will adopt me.
- 24:21Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 24:23Speaker 5: Oh my goodness, well you just brought that up, Christy.
- 24:25Speaker 5: I'll go ahead and go there too. Christy Martin Productions
- 24:28Speaker 5: is your your boxing promotion right, your your company and
- 24:33Speaker 5: I was looking at your your website today and all
- 24:35Speaker 5: your your roster. I mean it ranges from like featherweight
- 24:38Speaker 5: fighters to even the heavyweight they all all classes. Tell
- 24:42Speaker 5: us about Swain for you?
- 24:45Speaker 6: Oh well, you know, boxing promotion is a tough business.
- 24:48Speaker 5: Oh, I'm sure.
- 24:48Speaker 6: But where we have Victor Hernandez, who is a feather
- 24:52Speaker 6: with that you're mentioned all that he's going to be
- 24:54Speaker 6: fighting for a world title soon this this year actually.
- 24:57Speaker 6: And then Kemon Evans, he's our cruise of weight. He
- 25:01Speaker 6: just won a title up in New York. Yeah, we
- 25:05Speaker 6: have Devin Parish, He's a kid from Chicago that just
- 25:09Speaker 6: a hungry lion that wants to get it done. Yeah,
- 25:14Speaker 6: we have everybody, like one hundred and fifteen pounder, a
- 25:17Speaker 6: little bit of everybody. Sheldon Vallaton, who actually brought to Beckley,
- 25:20Speaker 6: West Virginia for a fight just so I have one
- 25:23Speaker 6: of my guys fighting in Beckley, and everybody loved him.
- 25:26Speaker 6: They can't. He actually came up for the movie when
- 25:29Speaker 6: we did the movie in Beckley, and yeah, my whole
- 25:32Speaker 6: town of Malin's, West Virginia fell in love with him.
- 25:34Speaker 4: How did you just get into like all like you've
- 25:38Speaker 4: just spread it out just from the last time I
- 25:40Speaker 4: think we talked, like You've just like all these new
- 25:43Speaker 4: things out there.
- 25:44Speaker 3: How do you manage all of this stuff? I cried
- 25:48Speaker 3: and I.
- 25:48Speaker 6: Talked to Champ a lot, and I'm like, please, I
- 25:51Speaker 6: need a break. Honestly, I need a break. But you know,
- 25:55Speaker 6: you got to keep on keeping on. You know, once
- 25:57Speaker 6: you stop, you stop. So we just keep trying. And
- 26:01Speaker 6: the boxing, the promotion is like, I don't know how
- 26:04Speaker 6: awesome it was and how I felt to get the
- 26:07Speaker 6: th and to win those titles. I want to be
- 26:10Speaker 6: so I want to be part of somebody else's right.
- 26:12Speaker 6: I want to help them get to that title fight.
- 26:15Speaker 6: Get the fight you know it, Madison Square Garden, get
- 26:19Speaker 6: the fight in Vegas. That's that's gonna be exciting for
- 26:22Speaker 6: me to be part of somebody else's right.
- 26:24Speaker 4: How are some of the how are how are some
- 26:27Speaker 4: of the boxers that you come in contact the save
- 26:30Speaker 4: for the first time to try to maybe get them
- 26:33Speaker 4: to work with you, Like like what do they what
- 26:38Speaker 4: do they say to you?
- 26:39Speaker 3: Like what, like are they like, oh, you know, because.
- 26:41Speaker 4: Because I mean you have I mean they know who
- 26:43Speaker 4: you are, you know, and they know your history.
- 26:46Speaker 3: Everybody knows your history.
- 26:47Speaker 4: So like I can't I'm trying to figure out like
- 26:50Speaker 4: how and what they say, how they what their reaction
- 26:54Speaker 4: is when they see you.
- 26:56Speaker 6: Most of the time, the guys that that that I've signed,
- 27:00Speaker 6: they reach out to me, like they kind of reach
- 27:02Speaker 6: out to me, like I would like to be one
- 27:03Speaker 6: of your fighters. And so I go and watch them,
- 27:06Speaker 6: and what is most important to me is who they
- 27:10Speaker 6: are as a person.
- 27:11Speaker 3: Right.
- 27:12Speaker 6: I have a kid that's really not a good fighter,
- 27:15Speaker 6: but he's a great, great human being. So I'm like,
- 27:19Speaker 6: this kid needs an opportunity because maybe he'll develop into
- 27:23Speaker 6: a better fighter, but he's a good person. So let
- 27:25Speaker 6: me see if I can help him. And boxing can
- 27:29Speaker 6: open up so many doors. It doesn't you don't have
- 27:31Speaker 6: to be a world champion, but you can use boxing
- 27:34Speaker 6: to get you to maybe you're going to be a
- 27:36Speaker 6: great businessman in your town, you know. But boxing can
- 27:39Speaker 6: make people become more familiar with you and see you
- 27:42Speaker 6: as a person and then they'll fall in love with
- 27:44Speaker 6: you and the next thing you know, you're selling real estate.
- 27:47Speaker 4: See that's that's interesting that you say that, because like
- 27:50Speaker 4: I can't. Like I'm thinking if I was, if I
- 27:55Speaker 4: was working with you to try to become a boxer,
- 27:57Speaker 4: Like I'm thinking, like, in my mind, that's it. You know,
- 28:01Speaker 4: I got if this doesn't work, But you know I don't.
- 28:04Speaker 4: I don't want anything else. This is I got to
- 28:06Speaker 4: focus here.
- 28:07Speaker 6: But that's how they think. But I'm a little smarter
- 28:10Speaker 6: because I'm older and I've right, I've been through all
- 28:12Speaker 6: this before, so I know that you really don't have
- 28:16Speaker 6: the talent to become a world champion, even though that's
- 28:19Speaker 6: what they they hope and that's their goal. What I'm thinking,
- 28:23Speaker 6: I'm still thinking, we're going to use boxing, let you
- 28:26Speaker 6: grow as a human being and open up other doors
- 28:30Speaker 6: for you. I mean, and maybe he gets a home running. No,
- 28:35Speaker 6: maybe I'm the champion. I'll be happy, you know, be happy.
- 28:38Speaker 5: You're kind of there Don King as Don King was
- 28:40Speaker 5: for you. Right. Well, in a way, I'm going to
- 28:45Speaker 5: tell us about your relationship with Don. I know you've
- 28:47Speaker 5: probably talked about him before on our podcast, but I
- 28:50Speaker 5: never get tired of hearing Don King stories.
- 28:52Speaker 6: So Don King, don King, Well, you know, he's let's see,
- 28:55Speaker 6: I think he's not. He'll be ninety four August twenty something.
- 29:01Speaker 5: You still have a relationships.
- 29:02Speaker 6: I still talk to him every every like once a month.
- 29:06Speaker 6: He does fights every now and then, so I commentate
- 29:09Speaker 6: for his fights. Hepe, we make matches. Sometimes. It's a
- 29:13Speaker 6: different relationship now because obviously, as a fighter, you're just
- 29:16Speaker 6: oh my god, oh my god, he's Don King. But
- 29:18Speaker 6: now I'm older and wiser, and yeah, he's still don King,
- 29:23Speaker 6: and trust me, I still approach him like he's done King.
- 29:25Speaker 6: But yeah, I'm not gonna fall for those things. Yes,
- 29:30Speaker 6: you know, I'm like, no, dude, you gotta pay me
- 29:33Speaker 6: for the he can.
- 29:37Speaker 4: So he he is still.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Pretty much the don King that most people know.
- 29:43Speaker 6: He you know, he this is old thing with Don King.
- 29:47Speaker 6: He was that don King that was in front of
- 29:49Speaker 6: the microphone or in front of the camera, and then
- 29:51Speaker 6: he was the don King that was behind closed doors.
- 29:54Speaker 6: And that Don King wasn't funny and he wasn't doing
- 29:57Speaker 6: that big laugh at those big smiles. He was all business.
- 30:02Speaker 6: So yeah, it's definitely to two don kings hmmm.
- 30:07Speaker 5: Which obviously you kept the real I mean you you
- 30:09Speaker 5: must have a mutual kind of like respect or at
- 30:13Speaker 5: least a friendship to keep the relationship going this long
- 30:16Speaker 5: to a degree.
- 30:17Speaker 6: Yeah. I mean, if I needed something really bad, you know,
- 30:21Speaker 6: call him and say, you know, d Canny can help here.
- 30:24Speaker 6: He actually has a champion that is a cruiseweight champion
- 30:27Speaker 6: WBC cruiseweight champion Nicole Nick what's his name, Noel mcalean,
- 30:32Speaker 6: And I have a cruiserweight that is also a champion,
- 30:35Speaker 6: but not a world champion. So I tried really hard
- 30:38Speaker 6: to get him to fight my champion. But my champion
- 30:41Speaker 6: was gonna win, and he said no, he wasn't about to.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Is that because he assumed that he wasn't he couldn't win?
- 30:48Speaker 6: Well, I think he knew he couldn't win, and then
- 30:50Speaker 6: there wasn't it wasn't gonna generate enough money. I mean,
- 30:53Speaker 6: you know, DK is still about the dollar, of course,
- 30:56Speaker 6: I mean it's business.
- 30:58Speaker 3: So how how.
- 31:01Speaker 4: Are you in any role like that to have like
- 31:04Speaker 4: to to create the fight, to promote the fight, the
- 31:09Speaker 4: money in the fight. Is that kind of have you
- 31:11Speaker 4: gotten into that space yet or or and or are
- 31:15Speaker 4: you interested in that spot?
- 31:16Speaker 6: Of course I would like to get bigger promotion opportunities.
- 31:19Speaker 6: I just did a show up in upstate New York
- 31:22Speaker 6: to Turning Stone Casino. Money was a little better, but
- 31:25Speaker 6: you know, without a TV deal, and that's what you know,
- 31:28Speaker 6: like Oscar de la Hoya Golden Boys, those guys, they
- 31:30Speaker 6: don't have TV deals, so they're not ever using their
- 31:32Speaker 6: own money. I had to use my own money to
- 31:34Speaker 6: make these fights happen. So yeah, I just I'm not
- 31:38Speaker 6: to that level. And I don't, you know what the
- 31:40Speaker 6: very truth is, I don't. My heart so much doesn't
- 31:44Speaker 6: want to go there. My big interest is Christy's Champs.
- 31:47Speaker 6: And that's what I really want to do is I
- 31:49Speaker 6: want to help everybody. But I really want to help
- 31:52Speaker 6: these these these people that are in the besket viollanced situations.
- 31:54Speaker 6: I want to help them get out. I want to
- 31:57Speaker 6: help them once they've gotten out, I want to help
- 31:58Speaker 6: them get into that next space in life. That's what
- 32:02Speaker 6: I think is important. And I did make a deal
- 32:05Speaker 6: with God for my hospital bed that if you'll let
- 32:08Speaker 6: me live, I'll help as many people as I can,
- 32:10Speaker 6: and that I need to fulfill that.
- 32:13Speaker 3: I understand. I understand, So.
- 32:17Speaker 5: You do also listen to this Carl so you're you
- 32:19Speaker 5: were just you know, singing her praises. She also does
- 32:22Speaker 5: motivational speaking, right, so we we She has a website.
- 32:27Speaker 5: I think Christy Martin dot net. Is that correct?
- 32:30Speaker 6: It's Christy Martin. No, it's Christie's Champs dot org.
- 32:33Speaker 5: Okay, so that's not a separate it is website.
- 32:36Speaker 6: Christi Champanels dot org is really where you can get
- 32:39Speaker 6: me for the for speaking, Christy Martin dot net. It's
- 32:44Speaker 6: just not as up to date. We got the Christie's
- 32:47Speaker 6: Champs dot the one. Yes, yes, but we like to
- 32:50Speaker 6: go and like I said, you know, I'm speaking hospitals,
- 32:55Speaker 6: Jills of course, galas that are like the Bestic Bones
- 32:59Speaker 6: uh sponsored, but any place that somebody let me talk
- 33:04Speaker 6: about domestic violence because I always say that if you
- 33:07Speaker 6: talk about something enough that people get tired of hearing
- 33:09Speaker 6: about it, they'll make a change. So I'm gonna keep
- 33:12Speaker 6: talking about it until people start making a change.
- 33:15Speaker 3: Do you think that caused your boxing?
- 33:27Speaker 4: I won't say skill set, but the but the aggressiveness
- 33:31Speaker 4: in your boxing. Do you think that that was caused
- 33:35Speaker 4: by you know, your your personal situation.
- 33:39Speaker 6: Looking back, Yes, I think it played a factor into it.
- 33:43Speaker 6: I think there was more than that. I think a
- 33:45Speaker 6: little bit of it is just who I am. I'm
- 33:47Speaker 6: an athlete that wants to be the best, like highly
- 33:51Speaker 6: motivated to be the best athlete as you know. Yeah so,
- 33:58Speaker 6: but I think because Jim Martin, like ah, you know,
- 34:01Speaker 6: it was always pressing the pressing the buttons, pressing the buttons,
- 34:04Speaker 6: it just added to that already I got to be
- 34:07Speaker 6: the best. I gotta be the best. But as hard
- 34:10Speaker 6: as I worked to be the best, and he would
- 34:12Speaker 6: always bring me down. So it was like that struggle,
- 34:16Speaker 6: constant struggle of trying to achieve and then get let down.
- 34:22Speaker 4: I was I was talking to a buddy of mine
- 34:25Speaker 4: and we were talking about coaching from you know, quote
- 34:29Speaker 4: back in the day when you would say you wanted
- 34:32Speaker 4: to be this or that, coaches, coaches would really come
- 34:38Speaker 4: at you if you were talking. You know, I was
- 34:41Speaker 4: talking about going pro since I was like seven years old,
- 34:44Speaker 4: and I'm saying it out loud to whoever is going
- 34:47Speaker 4: to listen. And my thing was, I felt like saying
- 34:54Speaker 4: it out loud for me made it even better for
- 34:58Speaker 4: me to because now if I tell you I'm gonna
- 35:00Speaker 4: do it. You're gonna doubt me. That only is going
- 35:04Speaker 4: to motivate me more to to get out.
- 35:08Speaker 6: I'm going to show you.
- 35:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm gonna show you back and watch so so
- 35:12Speaker 3: so I know we just got a few minutes.
- 35:14Speaker 4: So when you going into the ring and somebody has
- 35:17Speaker 4: already done a whole lot of talking, is that what
- 35:20Speaker 4: you would take in the ring? And and and how
- 35:24Speaker 4: how deep does that get? Would that get to you?
- 35:28Speaker 6: So? I like I was the talker. I was like
- 35:32Speaker 6: you absolutely, I loved it. I was like, I loved
- 35:36Speaker 6: that part. But what does.
- 35:39Speaker 3: No?
- 35:40Speaker 6: Yes, yes, yes, but I would I would get I
- 35:43Speaker 6: would try to get you so mad at me, like
- 35:47Speaker 6: you want to kill me, right, because you're gonna make
- 35:49Speaker 6: a mistake. When you lose your focus, you lose your control,
- 35:53Speaker 6: you become angry. No, you can't fight angry, not really right.
- 35:58Speaker 6: You have to be in control. Oh but I'm gonna
- 36:01Speaker 6: make you so mad. You're gonna make mistakes. And so
- 36:04Speaker 6: that's what I love to do. Oh my goodness, I
- 36:06Speaker 6: love this.
- 36:09Speaker 3: Well.
- 36:10Speaker 4: We appreciate you coming back, and you got an open

- 37:13Speaker 2: Carl Lee. Now back to the conversation.
- 37:19Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we took a quick break
- 37:23Speaker 4: and h let Christy get out of here.
- 37:27Speaker 3: She had some other things to have to do.
- 37:31Speaker 4: I think when she just just before we go anywhere else,
- 37:35Speaker 4: I just want to say, like, I feel like she
- 37:37Speaker 4: is just so comfortable here and she enjoys it, and
- 37:43Speaker 4: like she just gives us some information like it's it's
- 37:46Speaker 4: so easy.
- 37:48Speaker 5: She's just so's She's a pure joy to sit down
- 37:51Speaker 5: and just have a conversation with her.
- 37:53Speaker 3: She smiling the whole she smiles.
- 37:55Speaker 5: She smiles the whole time she tells you. You can
- 37:58Speaker 5: tell she's very authentic. The stories that she tells you
- 38:01Speaker 5: come from her heart. Her work comes from her heart.
- 38:05Speaker 5: I just think she's a truly special human that we're
- 38:09Speaker 5: all blessed to have walking the earth with us. At
- 38:12Speaker 5: the same time, can you do you see her in
- 38:16Speaker 5: the ring? No, Like I cannot.
- 38:19Speaker 3: I keep I keep trying to see, you know.
- 38:23Speaker 4: I saw the movie and all that, and I'm and
- 38:25Speaker 4: I'm she's been here what three times?
- 38:28Speaker 3: Two times?
- 38:28Speaker 5: Now? Well this is her second time, but we've been
- 38:31Speaker 5: in contact with her quite a bit.
- 38:33Speaker 4: Yes, So so when I when I look at her,
- 38:36Speaker 4: like I'm like thinking, like where where is that anger
- 38:38Speaker 4: at Like where did where does she dig that anger
- 38:41Speaker 4: up from? Because she's just as happy. And then with
- 38:45Speaker 4: the dog with can't like she's walking with Champ.
- 38:50Speaker 5: Just like he just like lays back and lets mom
- 38:53Speaker 5: do you know whatever Mom needs to do. So he's
- 38:55Speaker 5: he's a pretty pretty chill dog. But you know, I
- 38:58Speaker 5: was thinking back to Carl back. I think it was
- 39:00Speaker 5: in January when they did the proclamation for Christy Martin
- 39:04Speaker 5: at the Capital, and you know how how special that
- 39:08Speaker 5: was that we were able to go and be a
- 39:10Speaker 5: part of that ceremony and see her being honored and
- 39:15Speaker 5: a very deserving honor. In my opinion, I'm just kind
- 39:19Speaker 5: of glad. You know, we've become friends and it's just
- 39:22Speaker 5: really cool because you know, I feel like she can
- 39:26Speaker 5: reach out to us and say, hey, I'm going to
- 39:28Speaker 5: be in town and I'd love to be on your
- 39:29Speaker 5: podcast again. And I feel like too, if we needed
- 39:33Speaker 5: her to do something special for us, she would do
- 39:36Speaker 5: the same. Just that type of type of person. But
- 39:40Speaker 5: you know, I thought it was interesting too, and I'll
- 39:43Speaker 5: let you comment on it. But when she said she
- 39:46Speaker 5: was the trash talker like you've talked about, like Sterling
- 39:50Speaker 5: shark being the trash talker in your league. And then
- 39:53Speaker 5: and to see her and say that, I just can't imagine,
- 39:57Speaker 5: you know, like you said. But still it's strategic, right,
- 40:02Speaker 5: it's strategic.
- 40:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:04Speaker 4: And if you look at the two this is this
- 40:07Speaker 4: is gonna sound crazy, but if you look at the
- 40:08Speaker 4: two personalities, there's someone alike.
- 40:13Speaker 3: Now that you said, yes, there's someone alike.
- 40:15Speaker 8: When they're sitting in here, you know, it's all it's
- 40:18Speaker 8: all funny games, it's smiling. They're just happy to be
- 40:21Speaker 8: They they call you to let you know they're here,
- 40:24Speaker 8: so they you know, they'll come on.
- 40:26Speaker 3: You don't have to invite them, they can invite themselves.
- 40:29Speaker 4: And and she comes across just kind of like just
- 40:33Speaker 4: like and with the same type of confidence.
- 40:36Speaker 3: Oh yeah, you know, the.
- 40:37Speaker 4: Same type of confidence that that doesn't come across negative.
- 40:41Speaker 5: No, No, I don't feel like she's got that type
- 40:46Speaker 5: of attitude. I think she's the type of person that
- 40:49Speaker 5: just rolls with the punches. Literally, that's kind of neat
- 40:54Speaker 5: that I says that. But I feel like she she
- 40:58Speaker 5: looks at obstacles in her life and just says, hey,
- 41:01Speaker 5: you know, either we're going to overcome these or we're gonna,
- 41:04Speaker 5: you know, find a way around them. And she's through
- 41:07Speaker 5: it or go through it, Yeah, definitely. And and she's
- 41:11Speaker 5: very goal oriented and she's very passionate about her work
- 41:14Speaker 5: for domestic abuse victims.
- 41:17Speaker 4: It's it's it's amazing to to to think of, you know,
- 41:24Speaker 4: that life for her when you see her now, you know,
- 41:29Speaker 4: because again, like I said, she's sitting in the chair
- 41:31Speaker 4: and she's looking she's smiling, she's laughing like life is
- 41:34Speaker 4: is is great, and she's you know, I'm sure there
- 41:39Speaker 4: are memories of some sort, but it looks to me
- 41:43Speaker 4: from the outside, clearly from the outside, that life is
- 41:48Speaker 4: just great for her, like she like she has she
- 41:52Speaker 4: has found herself in a space that.
- 41:54Speaker 3: Is so comfortable and so beneficial for her.
- 42:00Speaker 5: Mm hmm. Yeah. I mean, I think her perspective probably
- 42:04Speaker 5: as as of anybody that goes through a traumatic event,
- 42:08Speaker 5: you know, and this one is to the extreme of trauma. Yes,
- 42:13Speaker 5: it makes you have a deeper appreciation for your life
- 42:16Speaker 5: and kind of streamlines, Hey, this is what I want
- 42:19Speaker 5: to do with my life, you know, this is this
- 42:21Speaker 5: is the kind of the path I want to to,
- 42:23Speaker 5: you know, to follow. Because they were so close to
- 42:27Speaker 5: a near death experience. Does that make sense?
- 42:29Speaker 3: Yep, yep, yep.
- 42:31Speaker 4: And and again you think of all that, But yet
- 42:38Speaker 4: when when she walks through the doors she sits in the.
- 42:41Speaker 3: Chair, it leaves like.
- 42:45Speaker 4: It's like she becomes just some just this happy, go
- 42:50Speaker 4: lucky person who but.
- 42:53Speaker 5: Don't let that. I would not want to cross her
- 42:56Speaker 5: at all. I mean, like she said she would if
- 42:58Speaker 5: she could, she would, she would still be in that
- 43:01Speaker 5: ring fighting someone.
- 43:03Speaker 3: And and and you can, you can, actually you can.
- 43:08Speaker 4: You can actually see that side of her sometimes when
- 43:12Speaker 4: she when she's talking about it. But then there's that
- 43:16Speaker 4: for me, I keep getting I get the constant, like
- 43:19Speaker 4: laughing and fun side of her, and I just can't
- 43:24Speaker 4: I just like I said, I see it.
- 43:27Speaker 3: I can hear it in her voice. I just like,
- 43:30Speaker 3: how does she get there? Like what, you know, how does.
- 43:33Speaker 5: She get considering what she went through? You know, like
- 43:37Speaker 5: I said, I feel like that's what she she made
- 43:39Speaker 5: you that, Yeah, and she said she she made a
- 43:41Speaker 5: deal with God, you know, when she was laying in
- 43:44Speaker 5: that hospital and you know knew that, you know, she
- 43:46Speaker 5: had almost lost her life to this, to this man,
- 43:50Speaker 5: and you know she she made the best of her
- 43:54Speaker 5: life after that she wanted to make sure that other
- 43:56Speaker 5: women have the opportunity to get out of those situations
- 43:59Speaker 5: if possible.
- 44:01Speaker 3: She she's to me just an amazing human being.
- 44:06Speaker 5: And talented. I mean, not only is she athletically talented,
- 44:10Speaker 5: all these other you know avenues, she's going down with
- 44:14Speaker 5: Christy Martin productions, with her boxing, you know, career, and
- 44:18Speaker 5: then motivational speaking, and just just so many things going
- 44:22Speaker 5: on in her life. She she she makes me tired.
- 44:25Speaker 4: I guess, I guess it's it's it's her way of
- 44:29Speaker 4: giving back and doing what she thinks is right and
- 44:33Speaker 4: what is helpful for the people that she's.
- 44:36Speaker 3: Around, and and.
- 44:38Speaker 4: A country, a state, wherever, whatever level she's going to
- 44:42Speaker 4: take it to. I just think that she just feels
- 44:45Speaker 4: that this is something that she needs.
- 44:48Speaker 3: To do for her because she's been through it.
- 44:54Speaker 4: She's had all of her success, and now she wants
- 44:58Speaker 4: to make sure there are other people that people who
- 45:01Speaker 4: are are struggling now, women that are struggling now in
- 45:05Speaker 4: situations that are uncomfortable, unbearable. She wants to she wants
- 45:13Speaker 4: to step in and and and win.
- 45:15Speaker 5: Those battles absolutely, And she's also deeply, deeply devoted to
- 45:20Speaker 5: her family, her her town, you know, her state. I
- 45:25Speaker 5: feel like she's just a true West Virginian that we
- 45:28Speaker 5: should all, you know, be honored and to know and
- 45:31Speaker 5: proud of.
- 45:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I would, I would. I just think that she
- 45:36Speaker 4: just needs more. I think we, the state of West Virginia.
- 45:39Speaker 3: Needs to do more.
- 45:41Speaker 5: I agree with that statement.
- 45:42Speaker 3: I just think that she, along with a lot of our.
- 45:45Speaker 5: Professional athletes that have you know, left here and made
- 45:48Speaker 5: a name for themselves and made our state proud.
- 45:50Speaker 4: I think and and if that were to happen, I
- 45:53Speaker 4: think that would bring those athletes back too, to be
- 45:59Speaker 4: here and so people know their names, know what they
- 46:05Speaker 4: look like, get a chance to shake their hand, have
- 46:08Speaker 4: a conversation with them. When you when when when West
- 46:13Speaker 4: Virginia athletes don't come back and have success, it doesn't
- 46:20Speaker 4: help the kids that are coming through the same sport,
- 46:24Speaker 4: the same right, uh, academic class or whatever. You need
- 46:31Speaker 4: somebody to to be able to say, hey, you can
- 46:34Speaker 4: do this. You know, you just have to keep on
- 46:38Speaker 4: this path. That's all just but but we just won't
- 46:43Speaker 4: for whatever reason, we just don't. We don't promote those people.
- 46:48Speaker 5: And let's think about the realistically, how many women in
- 46:53Speaker 5: athletics from West Virginia in any sport have made it
- 46:58Speaker 5: to the professional level, like Christie did. I mean, there's
- 47:01Speaker 5: not a whole lot of them anyway, So what a
- 47:03Speaker 5: role model. And when we do have a lot of men,
- 47:06Speaker 5: you know, males that are out there, not a lot,
- 47:09Speaker 5: but enough, yea, you know, we need a woman an athlete,
- 47:15Speaker 5: a woman athlete, just Christie Yeah, to come back and
- 47:18Speaker 5: stand out to these girls and young women and show
- 47:21Speaker 5: them that, yeah, there's a way to make it out
- 47:23Speaker 5: there in the world of athletics for women.
- 47:26Speaker 4: It's shameful that a fifteen year old young athlete, female
- 47:33Speaker 4: athlete does not know her, does not know anything about her, right.
- 47:37Speaker 4: I agree, that's that's that's shameful. It's just I mean,
- 47:42Speaker 4: it just does not make any sense.
- 47:44Speaker 5: Well, maybe some of these young young men and women
- 47:48Speaker 5: that are, you know, out there trying to make it
- 47:51Speaker 5: in the world of sports, we'll listen to our podcast
- 47:53Speaker 5: and then they'll know who Christy Martin.
- 47:55Speaker 3: So hopefully so.
- 47:57Speaker 4: But I guess we can get out of here now, Lisa.
- 48:01Speaker 4: I appreciate you coming. Hopefully Hollis will be back again
- 48:04Speaker 4: next week. You didn't didn't get a chance to call in,
- 48:08Speaker 4: ladies and gentlemen.
- 48:09Speaker 3: We will be out of here and we will be
- 48:11Speaker 3: back next week.
