- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time presented by
- 0:07Speaker 1: Prize Picks. My name is Bobani Jones. Thanks for listening
- 0:11Speaker 1: wherever you get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:15Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:17Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:20Speaker 1: a hater. It is Foxworth Thursday. I got to figure
- 0:25Speaker 1: something out, man. You deserve something clever on the way in.
- 0:28Speaker 1: We had the perfect alliteration. I didn't even come up
- 0:30Speaker 1: with that. They came up with Foxworth Friday that summer
- 0:33Speaker 1: on high noon where I had the brilliant idea to
- 0:37Speaker 1: use my vacation to take every Friday all summer.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Yep. And that motherfucker Pablo made me miss Champ Bailey's
- 0:45Speaker 2: Hall of Fame induction because they wasn't ready on time.
- 0:49Speaker 2: And I was. Yeah. So I just was. It wasn't
- 0:52Speaker 2: his fault. I just I blame him. But yes, I
- 0:55Speaker 2: was doing every Friday because you weren't there. And a
- 0:57Speaker 2: lot of people couldn't tell the difference. So I think
- 1:00Speaker 2: it was Fridays and I was supposed to be flying
- 1:03Speaker 2: to Kane.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Miss my flight. Miss Champ's celebration. But that's all right.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I'll tell you this, though. When I had come up
- 1:08Speaker 1: with that plan, I'll never forget. My old boss called
- 1:10Speaker 1: me about it. Anytime I was.
- 1:12Speaker 4: I had a ridiculous amount of vacation when I worked there.
- 1:15Speaker 4: Keep it real.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I have a ridiculous amount of vacation now. But I
- 1:18Speaker 1: had a ridiculous amount of vacation when I worked there.
- 1:20Speaker 1: And I don't believe in leaving that on the table.
- 1:23Speaker 1: So whenever I put that... Because here's what the issue was.
- 1:25Speaker 1: The thing was, because I did a TV show and
- 1:28Speaker 1: a podcast... just because the TV show wasn't on didn't
- 1:32Speaker 1: mean it wasn't a work day for me. So I
- 1:34Speaker 1: was getting all.
- 1:35Speaker 4: The off days from TV and all my off days,
- 1:37Speaker 4: and he would come to me and.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Be like, you know, we talked about this before, and
- 1:40Speaker 1: I'm trying to figure out, are you sure your contract?
- 1:42Speaker 4: Yes, I'm positive.
- 1:44Speaker 1: And I took a whole summer of Fridays off. And
- 1:46Speaker 1: those are the original Foxworth Fridays. And now we got
- 1:49Speaker 1: Foxworth Friday. Now we got Foxworth Thursday. We got a
- 1:52Speaker 1: lot of NFL to talk to the people about.
- 1:55Speaker 4: We are also.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Perhaps, depending on my mood, going to delve into the
- 2:00Speaker 1: story that got the puters putin' that damn Nicole Hannah-Jones.
- 2:04Speaker 1: I can't imagine how happy she was that that story
- 2:07Speaker 1: about them lesbians wearing masks came up.
- 2:09Speaker 4: I ain't even had a chance. Have you read it yet?
- 2:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I read that one.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Okay, I haven't read it.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Well, we might get to that, too, because I had
- 2:15Speaker 1: somebody send it to me, but I didn't have time
- 2:16Speaker 1: to read it. But anyway, we actually have NFL football
- 2:20Speaker 1: that we can discuss. I don't like this is a
- 2:23Speaker 1: weird week to kind of decide where to go first.
- 2:27Speaker 1: But before I came and sat down in his chair,
- 2:29Speaker 1: I saw him on the TV asking if the New
- 2:31Speaker 1: York Giants need to go get a quarterback. And I
- 2:33Speaker 1: think that's such an amazing story because the answer is
- 2:36Speaker 1: obviously yes.
- 2:37Speaker 4: But the answer also is who? Who are you talking about?
- 2:43Speaker 3: They can go.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Well, I mean, they can't pull Russ off the booth
- 2:48Speaker 2: or off the desk.
- 2:49Speaker 4: And if they could, it'd be the same as having Jameis.
- 2:52Speaker 4: We learned that last year.
- 2:53Speaker 2: That is very true. I don't know who the quarterback.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I mean, you could trade for somebody, I guess. I
- 2:57Speaker 2: don't think you want J.J.
- 2:58Speaker 3: McCarthy. I don't know. Yeah, I don't know who's out.
- 3:01Speaker 2: There, especially now that everybody need a quarterback. I mean,
- 3:07Speaker 2: Marcus Mariota would have been a great option. He's a
- 3:09Speaker 2: very good backup, but Washington, they know they need a
- 3:13Speaker 2: serviceable backup because they know he's going to be used
- 3:16Speaker 2: multiple times a year.
- 3:17Speaker 3: I don't know where you go looking for a quarterback
- 3:19Speaker 3: who ain't hurt.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Well, Kansas City has Justin Fields, right?
- 3:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Except the problem is, nah, dog, that's not– I mean–
- 3:29Speaker 1: I want.
- 3:30Speaker 4: It for him, too. You know what I'm saying? Yeah,
- 3:32Speaker 4: it ain't happening, man.
- 3:33Speaker 2: It ain't happening.
- 3:34Speaker 4: It ain't happening, man.
- 3:35Speaker 1: You might have to do some real adventurous shit. Jalen Milrow,
- 3:37Speaker 1: Indy up there in Seattle.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Yeah, up in Seattle.
- 3:40Speaker 2: But that's, again, they down a quarterback. They don't want
- 3:43Speaker 2: to get, like, they down to one quarterback now. If
- 3:45Speaker 2: they move on from Milrow.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Well, hold on.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Well, Darnold looks like he's about to come back, it
- 3:49Speaker 1: sounds like.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Maybe you could go get Drew Locke.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that's possible. I think it's too late for that one. Yeah,
- 3:58Speaker 2: it's too late. If you are a team that believes
- 4:00Speaker 2: that you are a championship contender, your quarterback just went down,
- 4:04Speaker 2: and you have a quarterback who's demonstrated he can do
- 4:07Speaker 2: the same thing that the other guy did. You ain't
- 4:09Speaker 2: about to move on from him for some picks. You
- 4:12Speaker 2: got a shot at a chip.
- 4:14Speaker 4: What you call it?
- 4:15Speaker 1: The Broncos might have been able to trick somebody into
- 4:17Speaker 1: Jair Stidham, but they played the playoff game last.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Year, and we watched it. We seen it.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Would Arizona consider moving off of Jacoby Brissett?
- 4:30Speaker 4: They're not trying to win.
- 4:31Speaker 3: That's true.
- 4:33Speaker 4: But I have literally no idea.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I hate what the Dolphins are doing, but I like
- 4:40Speaker 2: that Arizona and the Jets are both obviously going to
- 4:44Speaker 2: draft a quarterback in the coming draft. but they have
- 4:47Speaker 2: serviceable guys in there making sure the team is getting better.
- 4:52Speaker 2: You can't throw a whole– it just don't work in football.
- 4:54Speaker 2: You can't just throw a whole year away and then
- 4:56Speaker 2: drop a great quarterback in and think it's going to
- 4:57Speaker 2: fix things who may not even be great. So, like,
- 5:00Speaker 2: I think part of the Cardinals' plans are let's have
- 5:04Speaker 2: a guy here so these guys know how to play. Like,
- 5:06Speaker 2: you can't just show up and have these guys just
- 5:09Speaker 2: all of a sudden protect a quarterback.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Well, can he coach wide receivers?
- 5:13Speaker 2: Yeah, that's an issue, man. That's a big issue. What's
- 5:18Speaker 2: the rules on this, though? I need to know the rules.
- 5:20Speaker 2: You set the rules on the previous situation.
- 5:21Speaker 4: You know what's so funny?
- 5:23Speaker 1: Right before you said that, I was prepared to say
- 5:27Speaker 1: that guy's first, last name and the qualifier. And one
- 5:33Speaker 1: thing Dominique appreciates about doing the show is I make
- 5:36Speaker 1: sure that we keep out of trouble. Dominique just returned
- 5:39Speaker 1: a favor in a bigger way than he could possibly imagine.
- 5:42Speaker 1: But for those of you who don't know, it's this
- 5:45Speaker 1: dude that went to Ohio State that many of us
- 5:48Speaker 1: thought was going to be.
- 5:49Speaker 4: An all-pro guy.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Right away now my guy tyler dunn has said that
- 5:54Speaker 1: in the draft there were red flags that people ignored
- 5:57Speaker 1: i don't know what they are because i didn't hear
- 5:59Speaker 1: anybody mention any of them in front of anybody but
- 6:02Speaker 1: the guy now plays for the arizona cardinals his name
- 6:05Speaker 1: doesn't really matter right it's the the point is can
- 6:08Speaker 1: we call him junior can we just call him junior
- 6:10Speaker 1: i mean you can do what you want you know
- 6:12Speaker 1: i'm not yeah yeah yeah but the bottom line is
- 6:14Speaker 1: he stinks Like, he really, and we've been, this is
- 6:18Speaker 1: year three of it. And all those Ohio State receivers
- 6:22Speaker 1: that are in the league right now killing it, the
- 6:25Speaker 1: best one while in college was this one.
- 6:30Speaker 4: And his dad has quite the reputation.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Hall of Fame on and off the field.
- 6:38Speaker 4: Yes, yes, yes.
- 6:40Speaker 1: There's a Pee Wee Kirkland vibe, shall we say.
- 6:46Speaker 4: And the bottom line is, this boy is no good.
- 6:49Speaker 1: And anybody saying they saw it coming down, I'm seriously like,
- 6:53Speaker 1: where were you?
- 6:54Speaker 4: Because I didn't hear none of.
- 6:56Speaker 2: This in 2024. I revisited some of the draft evaluations
- 7:02Speaker 2: and was looking to find what the weaknesses were. and
- 7:06Speaker 2: see if those weaknesses matched up. And I was one
- 7:08Speaker 2: who fell into the trap also, where I was like,
- 7:10Speaker 2: this immediately saves your quarterback, immediately makes everyone better.
- 7:13Speaker 3: He's perfect, can't miss.
- 7:15Speaker 2: But I think these were the only evaluations that I
- 7:19Speaker 2: ever remember in the history of my life.
- 7:21Speaker 3: I can send them to you. That under weaknesses said none.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Literally like literally it said none I can find them
- 7:32Speaker 2: and send them to you that's a thing that actually
- 7:34Speaker 2: happened which is absolutely insane everyone has weaknesses like in
- 7:39Speaker 2: order to have strengths to be good at something you
- 7:42Speaker 2: gotta be bad at something else.
- 7:44Speaker 3: But not him he was perfect at everything and it
- 7:47Speaker 3: ain't panned out.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Hey man that draft I'm looking at it right now
- 7:50Speaker 1: what the top six of that draft was and it's
- 7:53Speaker 1: actually it looked like It was going to be really strong.
- 7:57Speaker 1: And overall, it's been pretty good. Caleb Williams, Jaden Daniels,
- 7:59Speaker 1: Drake May, 18. That's his number, right?
- 8:04Speaker 4: 18. Joe Alt, and Malik Neighbors.
- 8:09Speaker 1: But the margins in the NFL are thin. Neighbors can't
- 8:12Speaker 1: seem to stay healthy. They telling me that Alt been
- 8:14Speaker 1: getting bulldozed out.
- 8:15Speaker 4: There this year.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Drake May, I saw you talking about it on your
- 8:20Speaker 1: show when I talked about some of that here. I
- 8:23Speaker 1: made the hot take on here. I don't think he's
- 8:25Speaker 1: going to get an extension before next season. I just
- 8:27Speaker 1: like it because if he doesn't play well, he's not
- 8:29Speaker 1: going to go for the money that they're offering.
- 8:31Speaker 4: It's going to be more worth it. But you you.
- 8:35Speaker 1: It's not it's not cause for optimism. Jaden Daniels looked
- 8:38Speaker 1: good before he got hurt like that. And Caleb Williams,
- 8:43Speaker 1: we're still betting a lot of betting on potential a
- 8:45Speaker 1: lot with that guy.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Yeah. And I don't know.
- 8:48Speaker 3: It must be a different situation.
- 8:50Speaker 2: So you said a bunch that I want to hit on.
- 8:53Speaker 2: The Patriots, they better sign that man to that extension.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Stop playing around.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Also, Bob Kraft is cheap.
- 8:58Speaker 3: Yeah, that's true. Price is going to go up.
- 9:01Speaker 2: You better sign that man to that extension.
- 9:02Speaker 4: What if he stinks all year?
- 9:05Speaker 2: If he stinks all year, we got a different situation.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I think that you need to convince yourself that it's
- 9:10Speaker 2: not all his fault and sign that man to the extension.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Trevor Lawrence, basically.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Go right ahead and do it. And Trevor Lawrence has
- 9:18Speaker 2: been awesome up until last week. Yeah, that team has
- 9:23Speaker 2: a chance to win with that guy. Go ahead and
- 9:25Speaker 2: go into that wilderness again. And I'm just a coward
- 9:28Speaker 2: maybe in the way I think about this, but when
- 9:31Speaker 2: I get a little sniff of good quarterback play, I'm
- 9:34Speaker 2: paying up, boy. I'm paying up because I cover all
- 9:38Speaker 2: the teams. So I know you just got to talk
- 9:41Speaker 2: to some of these other fan bases. Talk to these coaches.
- 9:44Speaker 2: That's where you really get it. When you talk to
- 9:47Speaker 2: former coaches and you talk about their teams and how
- 9:51Speaker 2: it don't matter if they don't got that guy and
- 9:54Speaker 2: the guys who never had that guy are furious at
- 9:57Speaker 2: anybody who act like they can survive without a guy.
- 10:00Speaker 4: But what if he's not that guy?
- 10:03Speaker 3: A guy.
- 10:03Speaker 2: How about that? Yeah. You can win a Super Bowl
- 10:06Speaker 2: with a guy. You can keep a job for a
- 10:07Speaker 2: decade with a guy. You can't do none of that. Yeah.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:11Speaker 2: We did just it.
- 10:13Speaker 4: People act like I'm the only one that thinks this.
- 10:15Speaker 1: I have these people saying my refusal to let go
- 10:17Speaker 1: of my priors on Sam Darnold.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Nah, nah, nah, nah. That's not what's happening.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Sam Darnold was awesome in that playoff game against the
- 10:27Speaker 2: Rams and he had awesome stretches, but I did, we
- 10:31Speaker 2: were doing these simulcasts on ESPN where there was like a,
- 10:34Speaker 2: they would have the game happening and then the regular broadcast.
- 10:38Speaker 2: And then on the side, we do like a film
- 10:41Speaker 2: nerd broadcast of the game. And I was doing that
- 10:44Speaker 2: broadcast of the Seahawks against the 49ers. And so when
- 10:48Speaker 2: we do that, we got the all 22 and, And
- 10:51Speaker 2: we checking it back and forth all the time and
- 10:52Speaker 2: talking about it. They was hiding that man in their
- 10:55Speaker 2: most important game of the season. They were playing for
- 10:59Speaker 2: a first round by and they wouldn't let that man
- 11:02Speaker 2: throw the ball anywhere. And when he, he tried to
- 11:05Speaker 2: throw it away one time. And then a couple of
- 11:07Speaker 2: weeks later, he went nuts on the Rams and balled out.
- 11:09Speaker 2: So like, Both the things are true. Like, of course,
- 11:12Speaker 2: he does have that high, high level. And even he
- 11:14Speaker 2: was disappointed in his Super Bowl play. He does have
- 11:17Speaker 2: that high, high level and ability. But most of the time,
- 11:20Speaker 2: that ain't him. Like, that's just true. It's not wrong.
- 11:24Speaker 2: It's just a fact.
- 11:26Speaker 4: I appreciate you, bro. I needed that. Sometimes your boy
- 11:28Speaker 4: need a little backup. You know what I'm saying?
- 11:31Speaker 1: I'll switch gears just a little bit if you don't mind.
- 11:34Speaker 1: How impressive have you been by the Buffalo Bills? Because
- 11:36Speaker 1: I feel like I've watched decent bits of them playing
- 11:38Speaker 1: so far. And It is the menace hour.
- 11:42Speaker 4: The menace. He does look like the MVP this year.
- 11:46Speaker 4: I don't know about that thing last year.
- 11:48Speaker 1: I mean, he ran a couple years ago when he
- 11:50Speaker 1: ran that game. He look like he going to run
- 11:51Speaker 1: away with it this year.
- 11:53Speaker 2: There's no deliberation. There's no analysis necessary. There's no conversation
- 12:00Speaker 2: with that man doing out there right now. It's clear
- 12:02Speaker 2: to me that him and Joe Brady– was having secret
- 12:07Speaker 2: text messages like, this motherfucker McDermott can't take the reins
- 12:12Speaker 2: off me, man. Right? Like, is that not the most
- 12:15Speaker 2: obvious thing ever? That they was like, this defensive coach
- 12:18Speaker 2: is trying to protect his bad defense by having us
- 12:22Speaker 2: be conservative. Fuck that. We gonna outscore everybody. And whatever
- 12:28Speaker 2: issues you have with turnovers, like, it's part of it is...
- 12:32Speaker 2: The way we think about Josh Allen, some of it
- 12:34Speaker 2: is still like the reason why he got better was
- 12:37Speaker 2: when they started to turn down the aggressiveness. And you
- 12:40Speaker 2: assume that he never can completely tame it. And then
- 12:43Speaker 2: you have that issue on week one where he hits
- 12:46Speaker 2: Lassiter in the chest with the ball. You're like, see? See?
- 12:49Speaker 2: But the fact of the matter is, if you turn
- 12:52Speaker 2: up the risk profile, there are going to be more turnovers.
- 12:56Speaker 2: But there was a point where it was one-to-one. It
- 12:58Speaker 2: felt like there was turnover-worthy plays behind. versus explosive was
- 13:02Speaker 2: one-to-one for Josh Allen. Now it feels like you turn
- 13:05Speaker 2: up that risk profile It's like I'm going to get
- 13:07Speaker 2: four amazing, five, six amazing plays for every one possible turnover.
- 13:13Speaker 2: And the way they do their calculus, and I think
- 13:15Speaker 2: it's probably fair, is we better off winning that way
- 13:20Speaker 2: than thinking we can play a regular game the way
- 13:23Speaker 2: that this defense has been showing up the last couple
- 13:25Speaker 2: of seasons. The problem, the pushback is you look at
- 13:28Speaker 2: the playoff game that they lost and it was Josh
- 13:32Speaker 2: turning the ball over because he was trying to do
- 13:33Speaker 2: too much.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Do you also notice, by the way, that Keon Coleman's
- 13:37Speaker 1: back on the field?
- 13:38Speaker 2: I did. You like him now?
- 13:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Well, in line with what you were just saying, what
- 13:45Speaker 1: if the real problem was one guy? And by the way,
- 13:49Speaker 1: if there is anybody that you would expect that McDermott
- 13:51Speaker 1: would not like... That guy's at the top of the list. Now,
- 13:55Speaker 1: it sounds like he's somewhat complicit. I don't want to
- 13:57Speaker 1: pretend as though he was getting picked on necessarily. But
- 14:02Speaker 1: after the owner embarrassed him after they fired the coach
- 14:05Speaker 1: last year and was like, hey, man, they said they
- 14:07Speaker 1: wanted him, man.
- 14:08Speaker 4: Like, what you want me to do?
- 14:11Speaker 2: We have forgotten how messy. that Pagula handled that whole
- 14:14Speaker 2: situation and how convoluted and confusing it was.
- 14:17Speaker 1: With the general manager getting, remember we thought the general
- 14:19Speaker 1: manager was going to get fired and instead he got promoted.
- 14:22Speaker 2: And he defended it by pointing to Keyon Coleman and
- 14:25Speaker 2: then saying that he had nothing to do with it
- 14:27Speaker 2: and that we had tapes of it.
- 14:29Speaker 3: And it was like, this is confusing.
- 14:31Speaker 2: But this is when it's always easier to either tell
- 14:35Speaker 2: the truth or say nothing. Because, like, when you try to, like,
- 14:38Speaker 2: spin it, it's like you don't remember all the things.
- 14:41Speaker 2: It's just hard to do. But anyway, it's possible that
- 14:44Speaker 2: he could get better. It's possible that the situation around
- 14:47Speaker 2: him involving the coach was part of the problem. And
- 14:52Speaker 2: it's also, like, you think about the quirky guys in
- 14:56Speaker 2: the NFL. I hadn't thought about this until just now. I'm, like,
- 14:58Speaker 2: going through it in my head. They don't really work
- 15:01Speaker 2: on defense. Who's the quirky defensive player? Like, on offense?
- 15:04Speaker 4: Well, well, um.
- 15:07Speaker 3: I just mean defensive coaches don't like that.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I think there.
- 15:12Speaker 4: Are two things, right?
- 15:13Speaker 1: I think that also the quirky guy quietly is Myles Garrett.
- 15:18Speaker 1: But like, I think part of it is that coaches
- 15:21Speaker 1: don't like it. I also think the defense is just
- 15:24Speaker 1: not a quirky place.
- 15:25Speaker 2: That's what I mean. That's what I mean. That's what
- 15:27Speaker 2: I'm saying. There's no room for it. And Myles Garrett,
- 15:31Speaker 2: I wouldn't even say I give Myles Garrett eccentric points.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Not quirky. Miles Garrett is not up there doing this
- 15:38Speaker 2: shit on sale.
- 15:39Speaker 3: I like cookies.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Miles Garrett is like, I like comic books or whatever.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Maybe this song I'm listening to ain't what you expected
- 15:49Speaker 2: from me type of thing. It don't work on defense, man.
- 15:54Speaker 2: It's funny how it sorts for personality. I think I
- 15:57Speaker 2: might have told you this before that I was I
- 16:00Speaker 2: was surprised as I got older and started to realize
- 16:04Speaker 2: that football is a conservative sport. And I didn't realize
- 16:10Speaker 2: that like it, it controls for a little bit more
- 16:13Speaker 2: conservative personality wise people. And like, I always thought of
- 16:17Speaker 2: myself as like, I'm the cool guy. Then I realized
- 16:19Speaker 2: that I looked around. I was like, no, I'm not.
- 16:21Speaker 2: I'm boring as shit.
- 16:22Speaker 4: And that's why I play this game.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Cause I like it.
- 16:25Speaker 3: I like the structure.
- 16:26Speaker 2: It's not basketball where it's free flow. And it's like,
- 16:28Speaker 2: you do this right now.
- 16:30Speaker 4: Don't do nothing else.
- 16:32Speaker 1: My thing about football or the sorting is the drastically
- 16:36Speaker 1: different personalities of offensive linemen and defensive linemen. Those offensive linemen,
- 16:43Speaker 1: by and large, big old teddy bears.
- 16:46Speaker 2: It really is.
- 16:47Speaker 1: It really is true. They're typically thoughtful. They have like
- 16:51Speaker 1: a protective inclination about Saturday. Yeah. Yeah. Now, every now
- 16:55Speaker 1: and then you look at those clips. It is kind
- 16:57Speaker 1: of funny. Like my good buddy and your former teammate,
- 16:59Speaker 1: George Foster. I was looking at his draft field. It's
- 17:02Speaker 1: hilarious watching him just discard people.
- 17:05Speaker 4: Like, it's nuts.
- 17:06Speaker 1: And it's completely out of line with the human being
- 17:08Speaker 1: that I actually know. He's one of the nicest people
- 17:12Speaker 1: that you'll ever meet. No one has ever said that
- 17:14Speaker 1: about a defensive tackle, right? Even a dude like Gerald McCoy,
- 17:17Speaker 1: he real cool, but he ain't the nicest dude you
- 17:20Speaker 1: ever met.
- 17:21Speaker 4: That doesn't attract those guys.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Offensive linemen consider themselves nasty, but they aren't like defensive linemen.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Offensive linemen are nasty, dirty, like they don't clean well
- 17:31Speaker 2: and that sort of stuff. And they encourage each other
- 17:35Speaker 2: to finish plays and fight. Like you will have these
- 17:38Speaker 2: things with Jeff when he does the pancakes on Get
- 17:40Speaker 2: Up where nothing makes him more excited than watching somebody
- 17:44Speaker 2: dominate somebody and then rub it on them afterwards. They're
- 17:47Speaker 2: very into that sort of thing. But I'd say the
- 17:49Speaker 2: difference between offensive and defensive linemen is– Offensive linemen are
- 17:54Speaker 2: doing a job.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Yes.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Defensive linemen are being themselves.
- 17:59Speaker 4: Right?
- 18:01Speaker 2: It's like D lineman through most of their life. They
- 18:05Speaker 2: have to fight the urge to be defensive lineman in
- 18:08Speaker 2: daily day to day life. Offensive lineman are normal guys
- 18:13Speaker 2: who like, all right, I got a job to do.
- 18:15Speaker 2: I'm a fuck this motherfucker up and I'm a rubbish
- 18:17Speaker 2: facing it. And then I'm a shake his hand after
- 18:20Speaker 2: the game and I'm gonna be fine. I did my job.
- 18:22Speaker 2: I'm a carry my kids.
- 18:24Speaker 3: I'm a be fine.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Sweet and kind to my wife and thoughtful like this
- 18:27Speaker 2: is offensive lineman the lineman they are doing that every
- 18:31Speaker 2: other hour they not playing football they like all right
- 18:33Speaker 2: yes got to be kind got to be nice got
- 18:36Speaker 2: to be patient then they go in a football field
- 18:39Speaker 2: they like.
- 18:41Speaker 3: I can be me.
- 18:42Speaker 1: The other thing about defensive linemen is they are pursuing
- 18:45Speaker 1: people with the ball.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:47Speaker 1: That's a little hot sauce on the whole situation, right?
- 18:53Speaker 4: The goal of me destroying is completely different. Oh, man. Wow,
- 19:00Speaker 4: that was funny.
- 19:01Speaker 3: I mean, all the positions, though, you can go through it.
- 19:03Speaker 2: All the positions, there are different personality types that make
- 19:06Speaker 2: you for that position. And I think people are most
- 19:09Speaker 2: familiar with the cornerback personality. There's an arrogance and cockiness
- 19:14Speaker 2: that is required to survive in a situation where you
- 19:18Speaker 2: are designed to fail and no one wants you to succeed.
- 19:21Speaker 2: That's why all cornerbacks, you can pick them out. They
- 19:23Speaker 2: got on all the jewels and the most patterns and
- 19:26Speaker 2: everything you need. They are doing it.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Amen um for reasons i mean i get it i
- 19:32Speaker 1: guess it's a little it's okay this time because it's
- 19:34Speaker 1: kind of the same time zone but uh the cowboys
- 19:37Speaker 1: and the ravens are playing down there in rio and
- 19:40Speaker 1: buddy i i can't imagine how disappointed it is for
- 19:44Speaker 1: them boys that's like we going to rio and they
- 19:47Speaker 1: like you not going outside think your big ass can't
- 19:50Speaker 1: get got Yes, you can.
- 19:52Speaker 4: Yes, you can.
- 19:53Speaker 1: And not only, like, they ain't gonna kill you, they'll
- 19:55Speaker 1: just simply kidnap your big ass and barter with you
- 19:58Speaker 1: in order to get you back.
- 19:59Speaker 4: However, it should be some fireworks.
- 20:02Speaker 1: On Copacabana Beach, and by that, I mean, show me
- 20:05Speaker 1: why the Ravens will not score 50 points on the
- 20:08Speaker 1: Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Maybe the only argument they have is that the field
- 20:14Speaker 2: conditions supposedly are not great. They use that place a bunch,
- 20:18Speaker 2: and those soccer fields are not designed for the type
- 20:23Speaker 2: of like force that football players put on it.
- 20:26Speaker 3: And they already beat up for the number of games
- 20:27Speaker 3: they play on it.
- 20:28Speaker 2: So that is the one thing that gives me pause
- 20:31Speaker 2: about thinking that there's not going to be some sort
- 20:34Speaker 2: of shootout because the Ravens defense ain't getting pressure and
- 20:37Speaker 2: Dak and those receivers are a problem.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll tell you this though.
- 20:41Speaker 1: If the Ravens are going to get 50 points, apparently
- 20:43Speaker 1: they better get them in three quarters because they ain't
- 20:45Speaker 1: got nothing for you in no fourth.
- 20:46Speaker 4: What is this?
- 20:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it's people I think are unfair about the Derrick
- 20:52Speaker 2: Henry analysis out of this is like they stopped giving
- 20:54Speaker 2: the ball to Derrick Henry in the second half. And
- 20:56Speaker 2: I think the stats are obviously true. But in the
- 20:58Speaker 2: second half, they couldn't really stop the Saints. So they
- 21:01Speaker 2: didn't get the ball back. But four times their first
- 21:04Speaker 2: drive was a 14 play drive. You can't criticize that.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Their last drive was a two-minute drill, and one of
- 21:10Speaker 2: their other two drives started on first and 15. Like,
- 21:13Speaker 2: when are you supposed to give Derrick Henry the ball?
- 21:15Speaker 2: It's not like you just made bad decisions the whole time.
- 21:19Speaker 2: It's just you don't have the opportunity. So I wish
- 21:21Speaker 2: I had an understanding for why this happened, but missing
- 21:26Speaker 2: those receivers, I think, cost them a bunch of points
- 21:28Speaker 2: in that game. You can point to three or four
- 21:31Speaker 2: plays where a higher-quality receiver would have changed the outcome.
- 21:35Speaker 2: But I'm really disappointed in the defense. After what I
- 21:37Speaker 2: saw week one, I thought was really impressive that Jesse
- 21:40Speaker 2: Mentor was leading them in the right direction. You didn't
- 21:43Speaker 2: see that same impact in the second game.
- 21:44Speaker 3: That was the problem to me.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Hey, man, where are you on this Mahomes thing after
- 21:48Speaker 1: watching them play like that?
- 21:50Speaker 4: I mean, it was against the Colts, but it was
- 21:51Speaker 4: still looking vintage.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Well, it's only going to get worse when you go
- 21:55Speaker 2: against Miami. But, I mean, I was– Back-to-back down years
- 21:59Speaker 2: is just crazy, and I thought it was going to
- 22:02Speaker 2: happen in part because I didn't think Mahomes was going
- 22:05Speaker 2: to be back, and I thought that they were just like,
- 22:07Speaker 2: let's not rush Mahomes back.
- 22:09Speaker 3: We're going to take our time, and we'll use this as– because.
- 22:11Speaker 2: It's like an excuse year. You've got a gap year.
- 22:13Speaker 4: You've got an excuse month, right?
- 22:15Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a soft rebuild.
- 22:16Speaker 2: We get us a high draft pick and the best
- 22:18Speaker 2: draft that we've seen in forever, and we'll be fine. But, nah,
- 22:23Speaker 2: this is real, and it seems serious. The explosive plays
- 22:27Speaker 2: were back in the passing game. The running game is back.
- 22:29Speaker 2: I think we haven't yet, but I think are going
- 22:33Speaker 2: to end up giving a lot of credit to Eric Bien-Aimé.
- 22:36Speaker 3: The problem is, what he going to do with that credit?
- 22:38Speaker 2: He's not going to go get a job, right?
- 22:43Speaker 1: He has found his place. You know, like, it's kind
- 22:46Speaker 1: of like when Lindsey Hunter was in the NBA. And
- 22:49Speaker 1: I don't know if you remember, but Lindsey Hunter, he
- 22:51Speaker 1: had a box longer than most people had a box.
- 22:54Speaker 4: Haircut, that is. Yeah, yeah.
- 22:56Speaker 1: And then he went and cut that box.
- 22:58Speaker 4: And you realize, nah, man.
- 23:00Speaker 1: You're supposed to rock the box all the way through,
- 23:03Speaker 1: but the box ain't in style no more.
- 23:04Speaker 4: I understand you, right? You want to be hip.
- 23:07Speaker 1: You want to do the cool thing, but you're supposed
- 23:09Speaker 1: to have a box. You found your thing, and it
- 23:13Speaker 1: works for you. And Eric Bien-Ami's box is working for
- 23:16Speaker 1: the Kansas City Chiefs. It seems that they're within that system.
- 23:19Speaker 1: As everything is set up, everything goes right for him.
- 23:22Speaker 1: I know that he wanted the big job.
- 23:24Speaker 4: I get it. But literally, the entire league does not
- 23:27Speaker 4: think that he should have it.
- 23:29Speaker 3: And then he went and tried to prove it, and
- 23:31Speaker 3: it didn't prove it.
- 23:32Speaker 1: And it didn't work, and it didn't work. But he's
- 23:34Speaker 1: back here, and now they out here running. Like, that's,
- 23:36Speaker 1: as we talk about Kenneth Walker, Eric Bien-Ami is a
- 23:38Speaker 1: running backs coach, and that is a thing that he's
- 23:40Speaker 1: really good at.
- 23:42Speaker 4: And, yeah, that looks, they look like they got the attitude.
- 23:46Speaker 1: That was missing when he left, and people, many people
- 23:49Speaker 1: pointed that out. Like, why aren't you talking more about
- 23:51Speaker 1: the fact that Bien-Ami left? And it looks like we
- 23:54Speaker 1: should have been talking more about the fact that Bien-Ami
- 23:55Speaker 1: had left.
- 23:56Speaker 2: It's funny because I think we need, like, two pieces
- 24:00Speaker 2: of evidence we needed them to be worse without him
- 24:03Speaker 2: but we needed him to have success elsewhere to be
- 24:06Speaker 2: like y'all missed him but what you don't realize is
- 24:08Speaker 2: like yeah we still took it out because it did
- 24:11Speaker 2: because that puzzle piece didn't fit wherever else we put
- 24:14Speaker 2: it doesn't mean that they aren't missing it and they
- 24:16Speaker 2: have that benefit with eric b enemy now and it
- 24:18Speaker 2: seems like steve spagnolo also like don't want to leave
- 24:22Speaker 2: and he's coaching his ass off and really helps that
- 24:25Speaker 2: team stay uh Yeah, stay together. And I think the
- 24:29Speaker 2: last thing I'll say about the enemy is I think
- 24:31Speaker 2: it's the running game is important. But also sometimes people
- 24:34Speaker 2: pay lip service and just say like the cliche thing.
- 24:37Speaker 2: But apparently he's the accountability guy. Yeah. And that type
- 24:42Speaker 2: of culture is something that's hard to replace. And I
- 24:45Speaker 2: think you see James Winston bring some value to a team,
- 24:48Speaker 2: even if we don't think so. it ain't going to
- 24:50Speaker 2: be playing quarterback, but it's like the cultural part of that.
- 24:53Speaker 2: I think it matters to have guys that bring joy,
- 24:56Speaker 2: guys that bring accountability because it permits when Eric B
- 24:59Speaker 2: enemy is the one saying it all the time.
- 25:01Speaker 3: It reminds other people to say it. It reminds other people.
- 25:03Speaker 2: To live it.
- 25:04Speaker 1: It is amazing that Jameis Winston has managed to outrun
- 25:09Speaker 1: his past to become a lovable vibes guy.
- 25:14Speaker 4: It is. It is.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Wow.
- 25:18Speaker 4: Wow.
- 25:19Speaker 2: I mean, it's not that amazing, is it? Well, I
- 25:24Speaker 2: guess normally you have to play well enough for people.
- 25:26Speaker 2: It is amazing the way that he's gone about it. Yes.
- 25:29Speaker 1: And he's gone about it because the lane that he
- 25:32Speaker 1: has occupied is the Ryan Fitzpatrick lane. The difference is
- 25:37Speaker 1: Ryan Fitzpatrick was a seventh round pick. And so like
- 25:41Speaker 1: the fact that he got on at all was kind
- 25:43Speaker 1: of cool.
- 25:43Speaker 4: And then it's kind of like, oh, look at this guy.
- 25:45Speaker 1: And now he'd be a goddamn jumping off of jumping
- 25:49Speaker 1: on the tables and all of this stuff.
- 25:51Speaker 4: Right. Like, like he's become that guy. Jameis ain't even
- 25:54Speaker 4: got to do that. Right.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Like Fitzpatrick got to go the extra mile. Jameis just
- 25:58Speaker 1: got to show up and talk gobbledygook. And it just,
- 26:01Speaker 1: it just entertains people.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:04Speaker 4: And he makes people feel good.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Yeah, that is the number one smile guy.
- 26:10Speaker 3: I saw Jameis.
- 26:12Speaker 2: I remember. seeing some of the stuff that he was
- 26:15Speaker 2: doing and being made a little bit uncomfortable at first.
- 26:18Speaker 3: Like, are they making fun of all of us? Or
- 26:21Speaker 3: just Jameis? And then I watched enough of it. I
- 26:24Speaker 3: was like, no, no, no.
- 26:24Speaker 2: It's just Jameis. This is just Jameis. You go ahead
- 26:26Speaker 2: and do your thing, Jameis. It makes him happy. He's
- 26:28Speaker 2: making fun of himself for the crab legs. Other accusations
- 26:33Speaker 2: I don't think he can make jokes about.
- 26:34Speaker 4: No, he cannot.
- 26:35Speaker 3: No, he cannot. He's having fun. He's doing his thing
- 26:38Speaker 3: out there. And they love him until now.
- 26:40Speaker 2: It's serious.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it's serious, but hey, man, everybody know they about
- 26:44Speaker 1: to be winning shit, man. This is going to be
- 26:46Speaker 1: a hell of a test, though, because they play against
- 26:48Speaker 1: maybe the worst team in captivity.
- 26:51Speaker 4: In the Titans. And if let me.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Jump on this before we go because i'm just saying
- 26:57Speaker 1: that but the eagles played it down to the wire
- 26:58Speaker 1: against the titans but if the giants lose this game
- 27:01Speaker 1: they've got a stretch where it's the titans it's some
- 27:03Speaker 1: other bums and then it's the commandos i think the
- 27:06Speaker 1: other bums may be the dolphins like i mean it's
- 27:08Speaker 1: it's like it's somebody today should be right or at
- 27:11Speaker 1: least i mean i don't know if they who they
- 27:13Speaker 1: should be at this moment um but they were really
- 27:16Speaker 1: setting up to be like four and one yeah and
- 27:19Speaker 1: now if they lose these for though that that that
- 27:21Speaker 1: next set of games boy it's just gonna be sadness
- 27:24Speaker 1: around there because that boy harbaugh ain't had like a
- 27:26Speaker 1: terrible season before.
- 27:29Speaker 2: He ain't never been without a quarterback like he went
- 27:32Speaker 2: i mean flacco even from flacco to lamar and He
- 27:35Speaker 2: was his first year.
- 27:36Speaker 3: I think it was Flacco's first year, too.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Yes. And they, like, surprised people were better than they expected.
- 27:41Speaker 2: And then he went from Flacco to Lamar. It's a
- 27:46Speaker 2: good life to be in. Of course, there were some
- 27:48Speaker 2: injuries along the way, but not like week two out
- 27:51Speaker 2: for the season. Yeah. And even when you have not
- 27:56Speaker 2: that great season, there's something about knowing that it's over. So, like,
- 28:00Speaker 2: you can go week to week. thinking you got a
- 28:03Speaker 2: chance and still lose and the emotions of the place
- 28:06Speaker 2: will like stay in the middle range. There's something about
- 28:10Speaker 2: when your quarterback gets hurt and then you start to
- 28:14Speaker 2: lose and get your ass kicked. Yeah. There's like no
- 28:17Speaker 2: hope because if you lose and get your ass kicked,
- 28:19Speaker 2: your quarterback's healthy, you come back in and you're like, hey,
- 28:21Speaker 2: we made some mistakes, but we can clean it up.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Not no more.
- 28:26Speaker 4: Yeah. Tell me this before we go.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Have you been peeping the contentious nature of some of
- 28:31Speaker 1: these cam ward press conferences with the Titans? And people
- 28:35Speaker 1: just say, you know, like, why do you think, why
- 28:37Speaker 1: do you think that you're good enough to pop?
- 28:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:39Speaker 1: What exactly that question was, but they've come back at him.
- 28:42Speaker 1: He is a dude that projects the confidence in a
- 28:44Speaker 1: way that you would expect a two-star recruit who had
- 28:47Speaker 1: to go to incarnate word in Washington state and all
- 28:50Speaker 1: these places to get himself to be the number one pick. Like,
- 28:53Speaker 1: I don't find him to be arrogant, but I definitely
- 28:56Speaker 1: believe that he is quite self-assured. And it's a couple
- 28:59Speaker 1: reporters there that are not here for that shit at all.
- 29:02Speaker 4: I've never seen.
- 29:03Speaker 1: A press corps more directly ask a guy to explain
- 29:07Speaker 1: why he thinks he's good.
- 29:09Speaker 3: He was like the darling at first. If you remember
- 29:12Speaker 3: when he first got there, it was.
- 29:14Speaker 4: If we keep it at a buck, we ass.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Yeah, but even before that, all the stories were like,
- 29:20Speaker 2: he's extra early guy, he's extra time guy. Like, this
- 29:23Speaker 2: is the type of leader. He's taking people to the side, blah, blah, blah.
- 29:27Speaker 2: And keep it at a buck, we ass. Like, we
- 29:29Speaker 2: like that. They didn't like it, but we like that.
- 29:32Speaker 2: I don't know what's happened between him and them that
- 29:34Speaker 2: shifted this.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Yeah, shifted the tide against him. But you're right, they
- 29:39Speaker 2: hit him with these hard asked questions and then follow
- 29:41Speaker 2: it up with a harder one.
- 29:42Speaker 1: I'm saying is they don't they doing that unless somebody
- 29:45Speaker 1: on the team told them something that made them feel
- 29:47Speaker 1: like this is OK and appropriate. It's the only way
- 29:51Speaker 1: I've never seen. But I've never seen anything like this
- 29:53Speaker 1: with your number one overall pick in his second year.
- 29:57Speaker 1: And the numbers on him were bad. I felt like
- 30:00Speaker 1: when I saw him last year, he looked OK. And
- 30:02Speaker 1: the film guys seemed to back up the idea that
- 30:04Speaker 1: it wasn't so bad. The numbers were eternally bad. But
- 30:08Speaker 1: we're also seeing Jared Goff being an example, maybe even
- 30:10Speaker 1: Sam Darnall, that these guys who put up all time
- 30:13Speaker 1: bad rookie numbers are not good. as doomed as we
- 30:17Speaker 1: used to think like there are there's a josh rosen
- 30:19Speaker 1: out here obviously but there seems to be more room
- 30:22Speaker 1: for guys to get it together but they are i
- 30:24Speaker 1: i i just i'm like damn what are you what
- 30:27Speaker 1: what is this.
- 30:27Speaker 4: Team saying and feeling about you.
- 30:31Speaker 2: They're in bad shape there it doesn't feel good uh
- 30:33Speaker 2: they really needed that win that would have helped a
- 30:35Speaker 2: lot yes if they would have pulled off that upset
- 30:38Speaker 2: and they had it in hand but yeah they The
- 30:41Speaker 2: talent is there, but, yeah, it's the inconsistency, and it
- 30:44Speaker 2: doesn't seem like he's getting a bunch.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Of help from the players or the coaches around him.
- 30:47Speaker 2: But that's not to absolve him.

- 32:30Speaker 1: are back with Dominique Foxworth. Colts and Texans, normally 0-2
- 32:36Speaker 1: dooms your season, but when your whole division got one win,
- 32:38Speaker 1: the whole division got one win. But I feel like
- 32:43Speaker 1: if the Colts go down to 0-3, that's over, right?
- 32:49Speaker 1: I saw no cause for optimism for them from the
- 32:52Speaker 1: beginning because it's Daniel Jones, comma, coming off an Achilles tear.
- 32:57Speaker 4: Daniel Jones is enough for me.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Midway through the season last year, when they started to
- 33:02Speaker 2: fall off before Daniel Jones got hurt, they made that
- 33:07Speaker 2: ultra-aggressive trade for Sauce Gardner and then went on to
- 33:13Speaker 2: not win any more football games.
- 33:15Speaker 3: It felt like it was over for them.
- 33:17Speaker 2: And then Harley Hersey is essentially saying, your ass is
- 33:22Speaker 2: on the line this year, like publicly in a way
- 33:24Speaker 2: that most team owners don't while standing on the sideline
- 33:27Speaker 2: with bedazzled earpieces. It's just that feels like and then
- 33:31Speaker 2: go 0-2 and put up a good fight against the Chiefs.
- 33:34Speaker 2: Like that's again, it's another team that really needed that win.
- 33:38Speaker 2: Really needed that win. And yeah, they're in a bad spot.
- 33:41Speaker 2: She's not going to leave that sideline, which I think
- 33:43Speaker 2: is hella uncomfortable, but I.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Am shocked by how many people are acting like this
- 33:50Speaker 1: is normal behavior. So the story on it last year
- 33:55Speaker 1: was that she was new to the job. And so
- 33:58Speaker 1: she needed to be on the headset to hear what
- 34:00Speaker 1: was going on and get an idea of this, that,
- 34:02Speaker 1: and the third. And I think there seemed to be
- 34:04Speaker 1: a certain charm to the story. Her father had just died.
- 34:08Speaker 1: And I think a novelty to the idea that there's
- 34:10Speaker 1: a woman that's an owner and in a bit more
- 34:13Speaker 1: of a hands-on capacity.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:16Speaker 4: This is meddling.
- 34:17Speaker 1: There's no other, like, I don't, can you imagine if
- 34:19Speaker 1: Jerry Jones is on the sideline with the headsets on? Like,
- 34:22Speaker 1: it's bad enough when Jerry Jones pull up with like
- 34:25Speaker 1: the Prince of Saudi Arabia and he just hanging out
- 34:27Speaker 1: down there, right? Like her there in like, while people
- 34:31Speaker 1: are talking and everything else, People thought it was good
- 34:35Speaker 1: when they were winning, but then they lost all the games.
- 34:38Speaker 4: So my question was, at what point were people going to.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Look at this and say, hey, this isn't, I don't
- 34:42Speaker 1: think that this is the way that an owner should
- 34:45Speaker 1: comport themselves.
- 34:46Speaker 4: In a game.
- 34:47Speaker 1: And I mean, and I think it's obvious that this is,
- 34:50Speaker 1: what is it helping? Because it's not like she's making
- 34:52Speaker 1: suggestions or doing anything to help.
- 34:54Speaker 4: All she's doing is being over their shoulders.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Yeah. I think that there's easy arguments. I agree with you.
- 35:00Speaker 2: It's not something that I think is cool. There's easy
- 35:03Speaker 2: arguments to make for why it's OK.
- 35:06Speaker 3: It's like.
- 35:07Speaker 2: So often the defense for her would be so often
- 35:11Speaker 2: the decisions are made by the input that you receive,
- 35:16Speaker 2: which is normally skewed by one person or another. And
- 35:19Speaker 2: so like that's that's a fair assessment is like so
- 35:21Speaker 2: many coaches have been fired because the GM is closer
- 35:24Speaker 2: with the coach and they with the owner and they
- 35:26Speaker 2: maintain their jobs. Like I get the idea of wanting
- 35:29Speaker 2: to know exactly for yourself what's going on. But there's
- 35:32Speaker 2: also like you kind of got to have to have
- 35:34Speaker 2: some trust and step back. And also understand that when
- 35:38Speaker 2: you're hiring someone, you need to know what you're hiring for.
- 35:42Speaker 2: And there's no better way than to be on the
- 35:44Speaker 2: sidelines and see what's happening and listen in to everything
- 35:47Speaker 2: in a way that would allow you to learn what's
- 35:49Speaker 2: going on with the team and make some sort of
- 35:52Speaker 2: decision and understand what you need.
- 35:53Speaker 3: To have success.
- 35:54Speaker 5: Right.
- 35:55Speaker 2: Because you're there on the sideline.
- 35:56Speaker 3: But.
- 35:58Speaker 2: You have to do it in a way that does
- 35:59Speaker 2: not affect them and doesn't like, that wasn't a mistake
- 36:03Speaker 2: that they were on camera.
- 36:04Speaker 3: Right.
- 36:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 36:05Speaker 2: I get the idea that you want to know exactly
- 36:07Speaker 2: what is happening so that you can know what type
- 36:10Speaker 2: of coach you're hiring for. Like that makes sense, but
- 36:12Speaker 2: you have to do it in a way that I
- 36:14Speaker 2: feel like is not impacting the team. And to your point,
- 36:18Speaker 2: there's so many things that you have to read into
- 36:20Speaker 2: that wouldn't happen without encouragement or permission. And like they
- 36:25Speaker 2: highlighted her, in the Monday night broadcast. They don't do
- 36:30Speaker 2: that unless somebody was like, hey, you know what? Let's
- 36:34Speaker 2: talk about it. Like they had a package ready to
- 36:37Speaker 2: talk about how involved she is.
- 36:39Speaker 3: And it's like, I.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Don't love it. Meanwhile, their season's about to be over.
- 36:45Speaker 1: That will probably result in, I don't know about the
- 36:47Speaker 1: coach being fired. I don't know how Ballard has stretched
- 36:49Speaker 1: this out as far as he has. And he missed
- 36:52Speaker 1: on the quarterback. I wouldn't give up all the way.
- 36:55Speaker 4: You never know.
- 36:56Speaker 1: But, hey, he missed. He missed on the quarterback pick.
- 37:00Speaker 1: And then the Texans, they're weird, man. I think that's
- 37:04Speaker 1: the only way to put it right now. We all
- 37:06Speaker 1: thought they had the quarterback. And then the playoffs happened
- 37:09Speaker 1: last year, and we don't know if they have the quarterback. Like,
- 37:12Speaker 1: he's the example I'm making with Drake May. That they
- 37:15Speaker 1: came out of that year, and they were like.
- 37:16Speaker 2: Hey, fellas, we don't know.
- 37:18Speaker 4: We're going to think about it a little bit. I....
- 37:24Speaker 2: The problem with this one, though, is it feels so,
- 37:28Speaker 2: so obvious that you can't get a clean look at
- 37:31Speaker 2: him because of all the situations in football. I don't
- 37:36Speaker 2: know one that seems more obvious that you ain't helping
- 37:39Speaker 2: my guy at all. They haven't been trying, honestly. They've
- 37:44Speaker 2: been needing to fix this O-line for three years now.
- 37:48Speaker 2: And then his receivers keep getting hurt. It just feels
- 37:51Speaker 2: like the defense has been great. And the coordination of
- 37:54Speaker 2: the offense has not been consistent like.
- 37:56Speaker 3: This to me. And maybe he also isn't great.
- 37:59Speaker 2: And of course, there are certain quarterbacks that are so
- 38:01Speaker 2: good that they will at least make this mediocre. He's
- 38:04Speaker 2: not that. But it seems nuts to me to think
- 38:08Speaker 2: that you feel like you'd be better off without him.
- 38:11Speaker 1: I don't know where you're getting the next one from
- 38:13Speaker 1: because you're going to start. The clock's going to have
- 38:15Speaker 1: to go back to zero.
- 38:17Speaker 2: Right. And your team is ready right now. That defense
- 38:20Speaker 2: is ready right now. I don't know what else you
- 38:22Speaker 2: would do. And that's part of the decision when we
- 38:24Speaker 2: are assessing these quarterbacks is people want to talk about
- 38:27Speaker 2: them in isolation and like, is this guy worth that much?
- 38:30Speaker 3: It's like, no. Is this situation worth that much?
- 38:33Speaker 2: And to me, it is.
- 38:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Now, Rams and Denver, I think it's two teams in
- 38:39Speaker 1: very strong divisions. make your one in two lands different
- 38:44Speaker 1: playing where they, you know, playing in the divisions that
- 38:47Speaker 1: they play in the Rams.
- 38:49Speaker 4: You know, is Puka going to play?
- 38:50Speaker 1: It doesn't sound like he's going to, which means they
- 38:52Speaker 1: may be out there running that, that one, that was
- 38:55Speaker 1: it 13 with the one running back and three tight
- 38:57Speaker 1: ends and one wide receiver, which works, even if it
- 39:00Speaker 1: feels mad high school, it, it seems to have worked.
- 39:04Speaker 1: And then Denver on the other side, you know, just
- 39:06Speaker 1: count down the days till Sean Taylor. I mean, excuse me,
- 39:08Speaker 1: Sean Payton, Just can't help himself.
- 39:11Speaker 4: Give me that back. Give me that. Give me that.
- 39:12Speaker 4: Give me the card. Give me the fucking card.
- 39:15Speaker 2: I would like the lie detector test for how he
- 39:19Speaker 2: actually feels when shit goes bad for that offense.
- 39:22Speaker 3: Because a little part of it, I'm like, see?
- 39:24Speaker 4: See?
- 39:25Speaker 2: See what I'm saying?
- 39:26Speaker 3: But yeah, I don't know how this, without....
- 39:30Speaker 2: Just Devontae out there and Pat Sertan can handle that assignment,
- 39:34Speaker 2: as crazy as that sounds, he can handle that assignment.
- 39:37Speaker 2: The third team personnel is going to be tough to
- 39:39Speaker 2: win going up against the Broncos who want to play
- 39:42Speaker 2: a lot of man coverage. You're going to have to
- 39:45Speaker 2: run the ball successfully because you're not getting open with
- 39:47Speaker 2: three tight ends on the field if they just go
- 39:50Speaker 2: nickel the whole time, which I think they probably will
- 39:53Speaker 2: play nickel against that.
- 39:54Speaker 3: That's just not going to work.
- 39:55Speaker 2: And Sean McVay, as smart as he is, he's going
- 39:57Speaker 2: to have to figure some shit out because I don't
- 39:59Speaker 2: like that matchup for them unless they can run the
- 40:01Speaker 2: hell out of it.
- 40:02Speaker 1: Hey, before I forget about it, man, our guy got
- 40:05Speaker 1: an interception last.
- 40:06Speaker 4: Week for the Broncos. Riley Moss.
- 40:09Speaker 1: Let me tell you something I noticed, man. Because I
- 40:11Speaker 1: was watching that and I saw him get the interception. And,
- 40:13Speaker 1: you know, they was out here. He was getting racially
- 40:15Speaker 1: profiled by the referees all.
- 40:17Speaker 4: The time last year.
- 40:18Speaker 3: All of this.
- 40:18Speaker 4: And our boy Coop Coop get all the props.
- 40:21Speaker 1: Coop Dajin get all the props, but he out there
- 40:24Speaker 1: playing in the middle. Riley got the hard job. He
- 40:26Speaker 1: on the outside and he's on the other side of Sertan. So,
- 40:29Speaker 1: you know, they milk checking them all day long. And
- 40:31Speaker 1: so I decided I wanted to get me a Riley
- 40:33Speaker 1: Moss jersey. I'm an ally, right? Like I'm trying to
- 40:38Speaker 1: show him that I'm down, show what this society would be.
- 40:41Speaker 1: On one hand, I don't really so much approve of
- 40:43Speaker 1: having a white man name on my back.
- 40:44Speaker 4: On the other hand, I already got one. Right? So,
- 40:47Speaker 4: you know, I was going, I was thinking about checking
- 40:49Speaker 4: it out, man.
- 40:49Speaker 1: I went to the website and it was telling me
- 40:52Speaker 1: that I needed to special order a Riley Moss jersey
- 40:56Speaker 1: if I wanted one. They didn't already have none pressed up.
- 40:59Speaker 1: And that tells me everything I need to know about
- 41:01Speaker 1: white people, man. How in the world y'all got y'all
- 41:03Speaker 1: a real live pioneer out here?
- 41:05Speaker 4: He trying to hold it down.
- 41:06Speaker 1: For every single one of y'all and it's y'all holding
- 41:09Speaker 1: the back y'all don't even want to encourage him y'all
- 41:11Speaker 1: don't even want to give him no props let him
- 41:13Speaker 1: be a little five foot eight wide receiver for the
- 41:15Speaker 1: patriots you buy that shit up in a minute this
- 41:17Speaker 1: cat out here trying to do the thing y'all say
- 41:20Speaker 1: he can't do and i can't even show him support
- 41:23Speaker 1: the way i want to because y'all ain't even gonna
- 41:25Speaker 1: show him support the way he deserves because now that
- 41:27Speaker 1: shit costs too much.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Money I'd be trumpeting that pioneer every chance I get
- 41:33Speaker 2: on TV, especially celebrating him because I do think he's
- 41:36Speaker 2: a really good corner. And yes, he gives up a
- 41:38Speaker 2: lot of passing appearances, but they make this motherfucker play
- 41:41Speaker 2: man coverage all game because Pat can do it. Nobody
- 41:46Speaker 2: else does this in the NFL. No one else plays
- 41:49Speaker 2: man coverage as much as Riley Moss, and he makes plays.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Of course, he's going to get a little penalty every
- 41:54Speaker 2: now and then.
- 41:55Speaker 3: You know why?
- 41:56Speaker 2: Because Pat's on the other side. And they don't roll
- 41:59Speaker 2: the safety over. They don't do nothing. And I'm speaking
- 42:01Speaker 2: from experience. As a man who played opposite Champ Bailey
- 42:05Speaker 2: in Denver, the ball flowed a little faster and higher
- 42:08Speaker 2: up there, too. And don't nobody want to go over there.
- 42:10Speaker 2: One of the years I played opposite Champ, I think
- 42:13Speaker 2: he got targeted 50 times and had eight interceptions. So, yeah,
- 42:17Speaker 2: you got to go the other way. And I'm going
- 42:19Speaker 2: to get some penalties. I'm going to give up some points.
- 42:22Speaker 2: But I'm going to play well. And I think Riley
- 42:25Speaker 2: Moss is even better than I was.
- 42:26Speaker 3: And Riley's going to– they're not going to be able
- 42:28Speaker 3: to afford him.
- 42:29Speaker 2: And he's going to go somewhere else and be a
- 42:31Speaker 2: damn star because they're going to be like, hey, we're
- 42:33Speaker 2: going to throw it at you half as much and
- 42:35Speaker 2: we're going to let you play zone every now and then,
- 42:37Speaker 2: a little cover two for my man every once in
- 42:39Speaker 2: a while, let him chill. And then he's going to
- 42:41Speaker 2: become a hero when he re-signs– not re-signs, when he
- 42:44Speaker 2: signs somewhere.
- 42:44Speaker 3: Else as a free agent.
- 42:46Speaker 1: What black coach is going to bring him in and
- 42:47Speaker 1: treat him like he deserves?
- 42:49Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying? And in fact, that's what
- 42:50Speaker 4: he got right now. He got Vance Joseph.
- 42:53Speaker 2: That's the only reason why he's starting, because we know
- 42:56Speaker 2: that it ain't the color of your skin at the
- 42:57Speaker 2: top that determines the content of your football ability.
- 43:01Speaker 1: Vic Fangio with a slid of his side like.
- 43:03Speaker 4: They did Cooper.
- 43:04Speaker 2: Yeah, they brought Cooper in as a corner. They couldn't
- 43:06Speaker 2: wait to make him a safety nickel. He'll never be
- 43:09Speaker 2: outside no more. They don't never let him outside no more.
- 43:14Speaker 4: They do the white boys like they do brothers when
- 43:16Speaker 4: they go to college. And they're like, yeah, you'll get
- 43:17Speaker 4: a chance to play quarterback.
- 43:19Speaker 1: And the second your daddy goes home, you are 15
- 43:22Speaker 1: yards back off the line of scrimmage.
- 43:25Speaker 3: Hands on your quads. Learning protections.
- 43:30Speaker 4: That's why Lamar Jackson mama had to stick around.
- 43:32Speaker 1: That time they tried to sit her back there to
- 43:34Speaker 1: run back that putt.
- 43:37Speaker 2: Nuts. That's, I mean, Lamar, I think I talked to
- 43:40Speaker 2: you about this contract situation. That's something that would never
- 43:43Speaker 2: happen if he had a traditional agent.
- 43:46Speaker 1: I just don't know why people are so insistent upon
- 43:48Speaker 1: acting like this is a good idea. I just don't, like,
- 43:52Speaker 1: there's a reason these, they're not all, like, agents are
- 43:55Speaker 1: actually not the bad guys in the game. It's the
- 43:58Speaker 1: financial advisors and those cats you really got to worry about.
- 44:01Speaker 4: The agents save you a lot of stress, man. I.
- 44:04Speaker 2: I.
- 44:07Speaker 2: The situation that he's in now, the power and leverage
- 44:10Speaker 2: that he has now is something that an agent wouldn't
- 44:13Speaker 2: have negotiated for. He would have already signed another contract.
- 44:17Speaker 2: And so that's the thing is like the agents, their
- 44:19Speaker 2: relationship with the teams is, is such that they're not
- 44:23Speaker 2: going to be holding out. Eventually, they go back and say, Lamar,
- 44:26Speaker 2: this is the best we're going to do. And he's like, nah,
- 44:29Speaker 2: I want a no trade, a no franchise, and we'll
- 44:32Speaker 2: figure out what I'm going to do.
- 44:33Speaker 3: He got more power than anybody else.
- 44:35Speaker 4: Well, hold up.
- 44:35Speaker 1: You are correct when you put it in those terms. However,
- 44:38Speaker 1: I do know there's at least one agent who would
- 44:39Speaker 1: have pulled that off. I don't even know what his
- 44:42Speaker 1: name is. I just know who his client is.
- 44:44Speaker 2: That's true.
- 44:45Speaker 4: Kirk Cousins.
- 44:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Whoever repped that man, I don't really understand how don't
- 44:52Speaker 1: everybody rep him.
- 44:55Speaker 2: But it's because Kurt lived in this middle. That would
- 44:59Speaker 2: have never happened. Nobody wanted to pay Kurt what he
- 45:03Speaker 2: thought he deserved. That's why he got to where he got.
- 45:05Speaker 1: Nobody wanted to pay him what he deserved, but at
- 45:08Speaker 1: the same time, he was willing to roll it all
- 45:10Speaker 1: the way out.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Yeah. Right.
- 45:12Speaker 1: And so I guess that was my thing with Lamar
- 45:14Speaker 1: is I would not, the leverage he has is great,
- 45:17Speaker 1: I would rather have.
- 45:18Speaker 4: The stability of already having this done or whatever. Like,
- 45:21Speaker 4: I just feel.
- 45:22Speaker 1: Like I feel like there's a swirl of drama around
- 45:26Speaker 1: his interactions with the team that does not have to
- 45:29Speaker 1: be that way. And I'm not sure serves him, even
- 45:33Speaker 1: though I think in the end it'll get him a
- 45:34Speaker 1: bunch of money.
- 45:36Speaker 3: You might be right.
- 45:37Speaker 2: But I think I was only bringing this up because
- 45:39Speaker 2: the point that you were making is like, it shapes
- 45:42Speaker 2: who someone is. Like the early experience of being a
- 45:46Speaker 2: quarterback that I'm sure nobody wanted to play quarterback is like,
- 45:50Speaker 2: I can't trust these motherfuckers. And you know what these
- 45:54Speaker 2: ages are? They ain't nothing but these motherfuckers in different
- 45:57Speaker 2: colored suits.
- 45:58Speaker 4: I get it.
- 45:59Speaker 2: I understand it. But anyway, he's going to be fine.
- 46:01Speaker 2: He's going to make a bunch of money and play
- 46:03Speaker 2: wherever the hell he want to play. It may or
- 46:04Speaker 2: may not win a Super Bowl, but his career, he's going.
- 46:06Speaker 1: All the way. My thing with them is clear. They
- 46:09Speaker 1: don't have a built-out infrastructure. They don't have anybody whose
- 46:12Speaker 1: job it is to call people back. And look, I
- 46:14Speaker 1: know I'm not great at calling people back.
- 46:17Speaker 4: We was ready to march on the.
- 46:18Speaker 1: White man during the draft, and they was like, brother,
- 46:21Speaker 1: we kept trying to call. Maybe it was on purpose.
- 46:25Speaker 2: Mina and I wrote a piece on him, a positive
- 46:28Speaker 2: piece on him, where I said he was the best
- 46:30Speaker 2: quarterback in the draft and reiterated how he's actually a
- 46:33Speaker 2: pocket passer. The highlights just make you think that he's not.
- 46:36Speaker 2: And wouldn't return my calls, her calls, and nothing. But
- 46:40Speaker 2: they just like, we're going to do the work. And
- 46:42Speaker 2: I think all that other stuff has a place and
- 46:45Speaker 2: has value, but I don't think they– I mean, lots
- 46:47Speaker 2: of people are like, eh, that means nothing. But it
- 46:50Speaker 2: does make it a little bit of an uphill battle sometimes.
- 46:52Speaker 4: He is so good, though. He is so good.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 46:55Speaker 1: I just don't know how people really want to downplay
- 46:57Speaker 1: how good he is and the pocket pass and stuff,
- 47:00Speaker 1: but we've talked this football enough.
- 47:02Speaker 2: Uh-oh.
- 47:03Speaker 4: Okay.
- 47:05Speaker 1: Full disclosure, I would not say that Nicole Hannah-Jones is
- 47:07Speaker 1: my friend, but I would say that I know her.
- 47:09Speaker 1: If I needed something that she could perhaps help with,
- 47:12Speaker 1: I would not hesitate to call. I'm not sure she
- 47:14Speaker 1: would do the thing, but just saying, this is not
- 47:18Speaker 1: a stranger to me. Okay.
- 47:20Speaker 4: Okay. She wrote a very provocative, is that the word
- 47:25Speaker 4: we're looking for here?
- 47:26Speaker 1: I don't even know if she knew it was going
- 47:29Speaker 1: to be provocative on the front end. But 10 years ago,
- 47:32Speaker 1: she wrote this story for the New York Times Magazine
- 47:34Speaker 1: with her daughter on the cover about, she's an education
- 47:36Speaker 1: reporter and tried to decide where it is that she
- 47:39Speaker 1: wanted her daughter to go to school. And she decided
- 47:42Speaker 1: to send her daughter to an under, well, it was
- 47:45Speaker 1: just kind of described as an underfunded, under-resourced New York
- 47:48Speaker 1: City school.
- 47:49Speaker 4: In Brooklyn.
- 47:50Speaker 1: Ten years later, she wrote another story about it that
- 47:53Speaker 1: was kind of ruined the decision, and it was Have
- 47:56Speaker 1: I Betrayed My Child? And it had a lot of
- 48:02Speaker 1: interesting stories in it, shall we say, that did not
- 48:04Speaker 1: make that school that her daughter attended to seem like
- 48:07Speaker 1: one that you would want your daughter to attend if
- 48:09Speaker 1: she had any other choice.
- 48:10Speaker 4: I think that is the way that we could put it.
- 48:12Speaker 1: One of the stories that stood out was kids fighting
- 48:15Speaker 1: in the cafeteria and Nicole Hannah-Jones herself went to go
- 48:18Speaker 1: break it up and said none of the teachers did
- 48:20Speaker 1: anything while it was happening. Things about papers not being graded,
- 48:26Speaker 1: being told that her daughter was below grade level, even
- 48:29Speaker 1: though they never really checked. It was just the assumption
- 48:31Speaker 1: that was made. It was all these different things about
- 48:34Speaker 1: why the school wasn't good and her saying that, hey,
- 48:39Speaker 1: I may be in the course of trying to make
- 48:41Speaker 1: a larger point about school choice may have subjected my
- 48:45Speaker 1: daughter to worse outcomes. I think that it takes a
- 48:49Speaker 1: certain level of humility to get in front of people
- 48:51Speaker 1: and say that you were wrong. And I am here
- 48:53Speaker 1: to tell you, it appears that 90% of the people
- 48:57Speaker 1: who read that and got no concern about no humility
- 49:00Speaker 1: or whatever it was that it took for her to
- 49:02Speaker 1: say that she was wrong.
- 49:03Speaker 4: She did not say that she was wrong enough.
- 49:05Speaker 1: I have never seen anybody catch hell from all corners
- 49:10Speaker 1: of the internet like I have here. I mean, it's
- 49:14Speaker 1: black people sending around links from the National Review. Dominique,
- 49:19Speaker 1: I pulled up the for you tab on twitter i
- 49:21Speaker 1: was getting all the conservatives that were piling on her
- 49:24Speaker 1: and this was two days after all the black people
- 49:28Speaker 1: i knew were piling on to her. And that's not
- 49:30Speaker 1: even to discuss all the text messages from the people
- 49:33Speaker 1: who don't feel comfortable saying this stuff in public.
- 49:38Speaker 4: I've never seen anything like this before.
- 49:42Speaker 1: And you and I, if we were to ignore the
- 49:44Speaker 1: backlash part for a second, the discussion of where Black
- 49:48Speaker 1: people of means send their children is a.
- 49:50Speaker 4: Very interesting one, right? Like, I don't know.
- 49:52Speaker 1: I've told the story, people. We moved to Houston right
- 49:56Speaker 1: before I turned seven. So my parents worked at Prairie View,
- 49:59Speaker 1: which is 20 something miles northwest of the city.
- 50:02Speaker 4: We were not going to live there. Just keep it above.
- 50:05Speaker 4: So we lived as honestly, if you can't go any.
- 50:10Speaker 1: Farther northwest from where we were and still call it
- 50:13Speaker 1: Houston or even still like with any sincerity, try to
- 50:17Speaker 1: say that. You couldn't do it, okay? 1987, I found
- 50:21Speaker 1: that my people have moved out here now. But in 1987,
- 50:24Speaker 1: they had night. There was an elementary school literally across
- 50:26Speaker 1: the street from the house. It had three black people total.
- 50:30Speaker 1: So my parents took me to school in a little
- 50:34Speaker 1: town called Waller, which is right next to Prairie View,
- 50:36Speaker 1: which had a lot more black people. It was not
- 50:38Speaker 1: a black majority, but it was a much more representative
- 50:41Speaker 1: sample of the population out there. It was going to
- 50:44Speaker 1: a worse school, but it was not an imperiled school.
- 50:48Speaker 1: But I have always contended that that's the best decision
- 50:51Speaker 1: that my parents ever made for me. was not subjecting
- 50:54Speaker 1: me to the isolation that I was probably going to
- 50:57Speaker 1: suffer at the school that was across the street. And
- 50:59Speaker 1: having seen people who did suffer that and the outcomes,
- 51:02Speaker 1: very talented people that I think had the spirit and
- 51:05Speaker 1: joy of their lives kind of beaten out of them
- 51:08Speaker 1: by going to those schools. There's a real discussion about, damn,
- 51:11Speaker 1: how exactly is it? Do you go about putting your
- 51:14Speaker 1: children in a place that is safe socially and good
- 51:17Speaker 1: for their social development, but also provides... access to the
- 51:21Speaker 1: right resources educationally to maximize where they could end up.
- 51:26Speaker 4: And that is not that. No, no, no, no. This
- 51:30Speaker 4: just became, damn, baby, you fucked up. That's it.
- 51:34Speaker 2: This it's and you and I don't think fall into
- 51:38Speaker 2: a category of like, what was me type complaining? But
- 51:42Speaker 2: I think that we also appreciate the reality of the
- 51:45Speaker 2: idea that just the idea of existing while being black,
- 51:50Speaker 2: there's some tax that you're going to have to pay.
- 51:52Speaker 2: And I like jokingly talk about how being a black
- 51:55Speaker 2: man who's on TV means I got to.
- 51:58Speaker 3: Get a haircut every week.
- 52:00Speaker 2: And it'd take an hour and a half out of
- 52:01Speaker 2: my life and it pisses me off. And it feels
- 52:03Speaker 2: like an unfair tax that I have to pay. But
- 52:06Speaker 2: in this case, This is more serious where when you're
- 52:10Speaker 2: weighing the educational decisions.
- 52:12Speaker 3: Black people have this other thing.
- 52:14Speaker 2: And it's probably all minorities, but Black people in particular
- 52:16Speaker 2: have this other variable that has to weigh in. So
- 52:19Speaker 2: I can afford to live in a nice neighborhood where
- 52:21Speaker 2: the schools are really good. But what comes with that
- 52:24Speaker 2: also normally comes putting my kid in these isolated situations
- 52:29Speaker 2: where they are the only Black kid. And the result
- 52:32Speaker 2: of that is normally... you overcorrect the other way or
- 52:37Speaker 2: not overcorrect, but you become super militant person who hates
- 52:41Speaker 2: everybody and is unhappy. Or you become like low self-esteem,
- 52:45Speaker 2: try to assimilate, always trying to be like them or
- 52:48Speaker 2: be with them and always feeling isolated and different. And
- 52:52Speaker 2: I'm sure there are other outcomes, but those are the
- 52:54Speaker 2: things that as a parent who had this experience, who
- 52:56Speaker 2: grew up in a neighborhood that was all black. And
- 52:59Speaker 2: my parents sent me to a magnet school because we
- 53:01Speaker 2: couldn't afford private school for high school in order to, um,
- 53:05Speaker 2: get a better education because my high school, somebody got
- 53:08Speaker 2: shot at the local high school. And like you, the
- 53:10Speaker 2: neighborhood I grew up, I moved to like was a
- 53:14Speaker 2: nice suburban neighborhood in Baltimore County when I got there.
- 53:20Speaker 2: And then more and.
- 53:21Speaker 3: More people took over the city.
- 53:23Speaker 2: So more and more of us came out and they
- 53:26Speaker 2: all left and the money left and everything changed. And
- 53:28Speaker 2: by the time The high school my parents thought was
- 53:30Speaker 2: going to be good. I got there was like a
- 53:32Speaker 2: dangerous place. But anyway, back to me and my decision
- 53:35Speaker 2: is like I decided that I wanted to send my
- 53:37Speaker 2: kids and my wife and I decided we wanted to
- 53:39Speaker 2: send our kids to private school for the opposite reason
- 53:42Speaker 2: that you would expect, because our.
- 53:43Speaker 3: Local schools are great all the way up till eighth grade.
- 53:47Speaker 3: But they white.
- 53:49Speaker 2: And I was not going to do that to my kids.
- 53:53Speaker 2: I would pay for them to go. And so the
- 53:55Speaker 2: private schools in a pretty liberal area like DC are
- 53:59Speaker 2: all like majority minority, meaning that it's like 40, 50% white.
- 54:05Speaker 2: And then everything else is something else. And it's a
- 54:08Speaker 2: big portion of them are black people. So like, that's
- 54:10Speaker 2: something that was important to me. And the last thing
- 54:12Speaker 2: I want to say is like, my wife's experience is different.
- 54:13Speaker 2: Like she grew up with a lot more means than
- 54:16Speaker 2: I did. She went to, public school up until like
- 54:19Speaker 2: eighth grade or no sixth grade, I think. And then
- 54:24Speaker 2: went to private school afterwards. But she also has a
- 54:27Speaker 2: really huge black family in this city that is very
- 54:33Speaker 2: anti Jack and Jill. If that makes sense for people
- 54:36Speaker 2: to understand what type of people they are. I was like,
- 54:39Speaker 2: despite the fact that both her parents are doctors and
- 54:41Speaker 2: all our aunts and uncles are lawyers and everybody went
- 54:44Speaker 2: to Howard and got extra degrees. they see a distinction
- 54:49Speaker 2: between the Jack and Jill thing and us. And so
- 54:54Speaker 2: like when I brought this article to my wife, It
- 54:56Speaker 2: was interesting because she went to a white school from
- 54:59Speaker 2: like sixth grade on and said that I don't understand
- 55:05Speaker 2: the need for belonging. And like, that's where these people
- 55:09Speaker 2: are scarred who go to these like all white schools
- 55:12Speaker 2: is like, I want to be involved, but I'm always different.
- 55:14Speaker 2: And I was trying to express to her, it's like
- 55:16Speaker 2: you had all these cousins and family members. And you
- 55:19Speaker 2: went to school the same way that some people go
- 55:22Speaker 2: to work. You was like, all right, I go, I
- 55:23Speaker 2: do that. Then I leave and I have my life.
- 55:25Speaker 2: But other people, normal people, like their life is that school.
- 55:29Speaker 2: And if you go there and you're not invited to
- 55:31Speaker 2: the party, she's like, yeah, I wasn't invited to the parties,
- 55:32Speaker 2: but I didn't want to go to the parties. Like
- 55:35Speaker 2: I wanted to do black shit with my black people. Yeah.
- 55:37Speaker 1: I think it's one thing to the argument of like
- 55:42Speaker 1: wanting to belong. Belonging is one thing being rejected. is
- 55:47Speaker 1: another right and so if you don't feel like you
- 55:50Speaker 1: belong okay but if you feel rejected that's a different
- 55:54Speaker 1: animal like a lot of white people that I would
- 55:56Speaker 1: go to school with and I went to school and
- 55:57Speaker 1: took classes with right because my classes were probably way
- 56:00Speaker 1: more white um I don't know how much I belonged
- 56:05Speaker 1: but I wouldn't say I didn't feel like I didn't
- 56:06Speaker 1: belong but I really didn't even really feel rejected I
- 56:09Speaker 1: don't remember one time I didn't get invited to a
- 56:10Speaker 1: party and the guy told me trust me you don't
- 56:13Speaker 1: want to come I said I was like oh okay
- 56:17Speaker 1: But I don't think I felt like rejected from those spaces.
- 56:20Speaker 1: When you start adding that money component to it, people
- 56:24Speaker 1: start like people start feeling rejected. And it's not I
- 56:27Speaker 1: get absolutely not wanting someone to be involved in that.
- 56:32Speaker 1: We have a friend of the program who I think
- 56:33Speaker 1: to this day resents their parents. for taking them out
- 56:38Speaker 1: of a black environment and putting them into a white
- 56:41Speaker 1: one later in the school thing, right? Just because how it,
- 56:45Speaker 1: feeling like other in those spaces. Like, I think though,
- 56:49Speaker 1: and people just got to be honest about this, man,
- 56:51Speaker 1: this backlash about it is, is that Nicole Hannah-Jones has
- 56:54Speaker 1: become a polarizing figure. She became a polarizing figure to
- 56:57Speaker 1: the right because of the 1619 Project. What I don't
- 57:01Speaker 1: think that I don't know how many people understood this,
- 57:04Speaker 1: but I don't think that she understood this, and I
- 57:07Speaker 1: think that she learned is that she is a bit
- 57:09Speaker 1: more of a polarizing figure on what she would think
- 57:11Speaker 1: was her side. And I say this being who I
- 57:18Speaker 1: am with a certain self-awareness about the way that I
- 57:21Speaker 1: have comported myself in the past over social media, and
- 57:24Speaker 1: part of why I do not is I realized, hey, man, I...
- 57:32Speaker 1: at this point, don't have anything else to gain from
- 57:35Speaker 1: this space. And in fact, everything that I say on
- 57:38Speaker 1: this space is one more chance for somebody to come
- 57:40Speaker 1: up with a reason to decide that they dislike me.
- 57:43Speaker 1: And God knows that I have given plenty of people
- 57:45Speaker 1: enough reasons already to feel this way. And so when
- 57:48Speaker 1: that moment comes and you get your little, your slip
- 57:51Speaker 1: up comes, it came down from all directions, especially if
- 57:56Speaker 1: what they're getting you for is a first-person essay, because
- 57:59Speaker 1: who you are does become part.
- 58:02Speaker 4: Of the discussion, right?
- 58:04Speaker 1: You can't separate the art from the artist when they're
- 58:08Speaker 1: using the first person in the story. And so it
- 58:11Speaker 1: led to judgments of her actual parenting. How did you
- 58:15Speaker 1: not pick up on this? Like all of these things
- 58:17Speaker 1: that came out there and people are like, wait a minute,
- 58:19Speaker 1: wait a minute, wait a minute.
- 58:20Speaker 4: What about you in this?
- 58:23Speaker 1: And that's why people I feel like are like, hey man,
- 58:25Speaker 1: first person stuff is maybe not necessarily the way to
- 58:28Speaker 1: go in terms of making a point, right? Which, you know,
- 58:32Speaker 1: gets to what happens when, and I don't know if
- 58:36Speaker 1: this isn't exactly, I have a thing about people using
- 58:40Speaker 1: their families for branding and they're like using their children
- 58:44Speaker 1: for content.
- 58:46Speaker 4: I don't know. This is not what I normally mean
- 58:49Speaker 4: when I say that.
- 58:50Speaker 2: Right.
- 58:50Speaker 5: Right.
- 58:51Speaker 4: But it did happen. It did. And that's part of
- 58:55Speaker 4: why we're here.
- 58:56Speaker 2: Yeah. And I think that I want to be clear
- 59:00Speaker 2: that I don't know that the decisions that I've made
- 59:05Speaker 2: and my parents have made and my wife and her
- 59:08Speaker 2: parents have made for all of our education were perfect
- 59:11Speaker 2: there were trade-offs and I know like it's like the
- 59:17Speaker 2: being a black girl in those schools is probably more
- 59:21Speaker 2: challenging than being a black boy in those schools and
- 59:24Speaker 2: I know that is something that my daughters will have
- 59:27Speaker 2: to deal with so like there are always going to
- 59:29Speaker 2: be trade-offs in any decision you make. It's like we
- 59:31Speaker 2: were talking about that receiver. They said there was no weaknesses. Well,
- 59:34Speaker 2: there can be no strengths if there are no weaknesses.
- 59:36Speaker 2: Like in order to be excellent at something, you have
- 59:39Speaker 2: to give up something else. So like the tough thing
- 59:42Speaker 2: is when you're making those trade-offs, you don't know which
- 59:45Speaker 2: will be more valuable in the future. And I think
- 59:48Speaker 2: about that for when I was growing up and I,
- 59:52Speaker 2: we're all around the same age as Nicole is like,
- 59:55Speaker 2: I do. And this is, I mean, I assume white
- 59:59Speaker 2: people know this too, but they about to learn it now.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: But like, at least for me, when I grew up,
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: you grew up in an era where like everybody wanted
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: to get away from like blackness to some degree. Like
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: you wanted to be close to blackness for like what
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: it was cool, but it was a badge to be like,
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: like coming out of the eighties being like, we moved
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: to a white neighborhood. I go to a white school
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: for some people. And for a lot of people, it like,
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: Signified some level of success and achievement. And I think
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: that it's interesting that Nicole made the choice to go
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: the other way when she did. because she grew up
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: in that time too, but she grew up in a
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: different place. From the 1619 Project, watching that, she from
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: out Iowa somewhere. Yeah, she's from Iowa.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: She's from the black town in Iowa, Waterloo. It's Waterloo
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: and Davenport. That's where you find the black. Ricky Davis
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: and Michael's second to none. They are from Davenport, Iowa,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: for example.
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: I just think it's all pretty interesting. And like, I
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: don't want to, the part of the reason why I
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: don't high horse it is like, I don't know. Like,
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: I think I'm making the right decisions. I'm conscious of
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: the trade-offs that I'm making. I guess that's all I'm
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: saying is what she conscious of the trade-offs. Like you
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: have to know and accept the idea that you thought
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: she was going to get as quality, an academic education
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: as whatever social education she got. Like, If you knew
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: that you made that choice anyway, then I'm fine with it.
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: But if you thought that you was going to break
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: the system, that part to me is confusing.
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: I wonder this part, too.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: And so this is, you know, I think one thing
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: that in talking about this piece, everyone has to be
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: careful about is, hey, make sure you're not projecting.
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: Like you're not like you're not making this fully about
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: you or what your situation was, whatever.
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: But I could say this about me.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: I grew up in an interesting situation because of the
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: school that I went to.
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: We were not rich, but we were certainly not poor. Right.
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: But I think even the white kids that I went
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: to school with looked at us as people having money.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: You know, my parents are college professors. I was coming
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: from something different than the people I went to school with,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: by and large, were coming from. Because by this time,
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: in the old days, the professors that worked at Prairie
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: View lived in Prairie View. Well, that generation, it basically
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: aged out. Like I was not going to school with
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: other professors' kids, by and large, right? And especially for me,
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: like growing up in the 90s, where the gangster shit
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: was what was really ruling or whatever, like ain't nothing
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: cool about having a stable family upbringing.
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying? The way I always saw
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: it is there was no real charm in that.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: The kids that seemed like they came for something a
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: little harder, even in the suburban neighborhood, that one kid
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: that's from the city, he got all the girls. He's
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: the one that gets all the action. And so there
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: could be a tendency to kind of want to fall
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: in that direction. Now, the thing for me with the
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: people I went to school with where it influenced me
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: personally was everybody I went to school with had a job,
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: for example. I was in the class dynamic where if
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: I wanted to, I could probably get some money from
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: my parents for whatever stuff I needed. But the truth is,
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: my parents were cheap anyway, so I was going to
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: need to go get this money. But I went to
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: school These cats paying for their own car insurance, for example,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: in your 16, buying your own car when you're 16,
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: 17 years old.
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: I'm like, like it put me in touch. I was
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: very much in touch with the class privilege. You could
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: say that I had whatever, but it made me want
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: to go get a job.
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: Like all the kids at school had a job and
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: talked about having jobs. So I went and got a job.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: Right. And it impacted me in the way that. There
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: were things that my parents were capable of doing for
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: me that I actually always did myself because I saw
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: so many people who did it for themselves. So on
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: one hand, it could be done. But on the other hand,
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: I wanted to do what like everybody was doing. And
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: I was like that even in a lot of ways
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: through college where there were other people whose parents had money,
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: you know, for purposes of this discussion and all of
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: that stuff.
- 1:04:03Speaker 4: But I worked all the way through. I didn't take
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: money from my parents.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: They paid for certain stuff, but I was on scholarship
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: and I was working and paying for all my own stuff.
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: I had a.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: Certain badge of honor about the fact that I was
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: doing those things. Then I got to graduate school and
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: I thought I was going to be grown by then.
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: And I was not.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: I could have possibly been more broke. And I went
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: to school with a cat. It was really funny because
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: it turned out we met each other there. And it
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: turned out that his mother and my father graduated from
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: high school together in Oklahoma City in 1960.
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: Yeah, just pure.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: We were the only two black dudes in this program
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: that we were in. And we got each other through
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: in a lot of ways. But I would talk to
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: him about a lot of this stuff. And I didn't
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: want to ask my parents for money, you know, like
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: all those things. And it was the first time that
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: I had considered that these people whose life, I wouldn't
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: say I was cosplaying because I wasn't pretending, but where
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: I was trying to do the things that they did
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: because they had to do them, are looking at me like, hey, cuz.
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: How about you call your mom and ask her to
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: send you $ 1, 000?
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: Yeah. Because if I had somebody that would send.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: Me $ 1, 000, I would ask them to send me $ 1, 000, right?
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: It was the first time that it ever really dawned
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: on me how many of those people, this life that
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: in some way may seem cool or may seem charming,
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: and I wasn't, to be clear, I was not dumb
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: enough to think there was anything cool about being poor,
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: but you get what I'm saying, right?
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: To have these challenges....
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: Every single one of them would have traded places with
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: me in a heartbeat. All those rappers that I was
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: listening to that was talking all that shit, guess where
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: none of their kids live? That same circumstance that we're
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: talking about. And I think that was the part that
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: really offended a lot.
- 1:05:55Speaker 4: Of people about this article.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: Is the idea that your kids don't have to do
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: this shit. And there's people working three jobs and everything
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: else to take their children out of those environments.
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: And somehow, rather than listen.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: To us, you thought this is what you should do
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: and told the world about it.
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: People really, I'm saying, I'm not saying it's right or wrong,
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: but people really, really, really seem to resent that.
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: I get it. And I understand. And I obviously made
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: choices that I've made. And so like, that is, that's
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: what it is. I had a friend in business school
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: who went to all fancy schools, but she grew up
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: in New York, but, um, her parents sent her to
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: the boys and girls club in, um, in some bad
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: neighborhood in Brooklyn, even though she went to fancy schools
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: because she was black and they were like, we want
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: you to have some connection to black experience.
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: But I'll use your story about, I.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: Think we forget, you think that the influence on your
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: kids is you, but you forget that you spend so
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: much time at school around your friends. I'd say overall,
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: you going to that school where everyone had to work, like,
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: was a good influence on you.
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: So I'm saying that What Nicole was aware of in
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: part of this decision is sending them to these fancy
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: all white schools is like maybe they'll get the best
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: academic experience. But the culture that my kid will become
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: a part of is something that I'm not interested in.
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: And I think that she in some way, consciously or unconsciously,
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: did the calculation that the academic genetics that my daughter
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: will have will compensate for whatever, and the at-home engagement
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: will compensate for the shortcomings in the school, but I
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: can't substitute for the cultural experience of growing up around
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: Black people. And I know that her daughters seem to
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: not like the decision and no one seems to like
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: the decision from outside. And I don't know whether it's
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: right or wrong, but There's no test. There's no measurement
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: for like how sophisticated you are culturally with your blackness
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: or anything like that. And so we don't have anything
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: to compare it to.
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: But I promise you, her daughter is comfortable everywhere.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. It's just what you prioritize.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: I think the point and I said this earlier about
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: my school, I think this distinction is important to repeat.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: My school that I went to was probably not as
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: well funded as the ones that my parents.
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: Did not have me go to. But the school I
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: went to was not empty.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: That's the thing about it it wasn't in peril if
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: my mama had pulled up at the school and these
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: motherfuckers was fighting in the cafeteria and she had to
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: bring it up and nobody pulled up i would not
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: have been in that bitch the.
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: Next day that that was that was where people were
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: like whoa wait a minute.
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: She say this happen all the time and you was
- 1:09:05Speaker 5: like well go get him champ you ain't even take
- 1:09:08Speaker 5: you ain't even take her to the gym to get
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: a little put a little work in like figure out
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: how you gonna handle yourself when it's your turn like.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: Damn I can't defend it. I did the best I could.
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: No, you did. You did.
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: I think that's why I think that if you took
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: the name Nicole Hannah-Jones off of it, there's a lot
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: interesting to talk about.
- 1:09:31Speaker 4: And I found the further.
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: Offline people were, the more likely in the discussions I
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: had with them, they approached it with a measure of empathy.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: But this is where we're not supposed to know so
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: much about each other. And so people's personal issues and
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: judgments of her, I think, seeped into it. On top
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: of the fact, there were some truly jaw-dropping details that
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: I wouldn't have told nobody about if my concern was
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: how I was going to be received.
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: That's it.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: But the pewters was pewting, dog. And they still pewting.
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: They still pewting, in part because she's really famous.
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: But It kind of reminded me, like, I felt like I.
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: Was watching two people who are on there saying the
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: same thing and expressing the same feelings, but they not
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: coming from the same place. I'm going to give you
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: an example of this, okay? White people and black people
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: can often say the same thing And it sounds like
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: they mean the same thing, but they talking about vastly
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: different things. For example, stairway to heaven. If a white
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: person is talking about stairway to heaven, they're like, Oh
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: my God, it's one of the greatest songs that's ever made.
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: That's my daddy or my granddaddy's favorite song. I love
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: stairway to heaven. And if a black person is talking
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: about stairway to heaven, they're going to say, oh my God,
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: that is one of the greatest songs that is ever made.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: That is my daddy or my granddaddy's favorite song. And
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: the white person would be like, hell yeah, don't you
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: love the way that it kind of starts low key
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: and then it builds up as it goes farther and
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: farther along. And the black person is like, hell yeah,
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: that's what I'm talking about. It starts off like there's
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: a little bit of a beat, like they ain't even
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: got no drums in it yet.
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: And it just keeps on going. And they'd be like,
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: hell yeah.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: And everybody's talking about Stairway to Heaven. And then all
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: of a sudden it's time for somebody to say the
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: words to Stairway to Heaven.
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: They about to sing it together. And then that white
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: person's right. And then we walk on down the road.
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: The black person's like, yo, what the fuck was that?
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: What are you talking about?
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: That's not what I was saying at all. But we
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: was just all saying the same thing, right? Right?
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: We go in step by step.
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: And they're like, yo, what is that Negro garble that
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: you're offering over there? No, we.
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: I thought we was talking about stairway to heaven.
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: And everybody's all confused. That's this issue. I got people
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: being like, yo, this article is terrible. And they saying
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: this article is terrible. And these people over here being like,
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: hell yeah, those public schools are so bad. And they're like,
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: hell yeah, the public schools are so bad. And they're like,
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: that's why you don't go to school with black people.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: And they like, wait a minute, what did you say?
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: Like at some point that internet collision is going to
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: happen and everybody's going to realize we're not actually saying
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: the same thing.
- 1:12:38Speaker 4: It just seems like it.
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: That I think is the other level of this. It
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: is a weird chorus, but everybody's singing the same notes,
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: but not singing the same song.
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: I hadn't seen as much of the internet reaction as
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: you had. So like, I didn't realize that. That most
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: of it has been like group chat conversations with other
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: black people. So I didn't realize that it had become like, see,
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: told you they animals can't go to school with them.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: I didn't know that was even a part of it.
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: Oh, hey, let me tell you something. They some animals
- 1:13:10Speaker 4: as always. Yeah, it's always it's always this close.
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: However, there are to be fair, though. Just as is
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: the case with Stairway to Heaven. There are some black
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: people who in this case, that's the Stairway to Heaven
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: they also met. I read an article written by somebody
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: I know who basically said the same thing.
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: And I was like, ooh, I.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: I wouldn't have told anybody that if I was you,
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: this is, this is, this is like, they never going
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: to give you the Oscars to get. I thought you
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: was going to play stairway to heaven.
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: You played stairway to heaven. Yeah.
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: What are we doing? What are we doing? But Hey,
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: that's Dominique Foxworth.
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: Check him out on the Dominique Foxworth show available for
