- 0:04Speaker 1: We're back. Football is here. This year, We're going to
- 0:07Speaker 1: be joined by so many different players on the Buffalo
- 0:10Speaker 1: Bill squad. In our first episode, we've got second year
- 0:13Speaker 1: running back Ray Davis joining the show. Ray talks about
- 0:17Speaker 1: going from a running back to a kicker this offseason,
- 0:20Speaker 1: how exciting that was for him, what he's expecting in
- 0:24Speaker 1: his second season after having six touchdowns during his rookie year.
- 0:28Speaker 1: We also dive into his love for cooking, some things
- 0:32Speaker 1: that have worked for him in the kitchen and some
- 0:34Speaker 1: things that haven't worked as well, and we dive into
- 0:38Speaker 1: the trip that our Bill's content team took home with
- 0:42Speaker 1: Ray to California to discuss his upbringing and the Ray
- 0:46Speaker 1: Davis story. Ray talks about what he learned from that experience.
- 0:51Speaker 1: We also have Ray's big brother from the Big Brother's
- 0:54Speaker 1: Big Sisters program, Patrick Dowley, joining us. Patrick talks about
- 0:58Speaker 1: his excitement for Ray's second year in the NFL and
- 1:02Speaker 1: also discusses his relationship with Ray and his thoughts about
- 1:07Speaker 1: Ray taking over as kicker during the Giants preseason game.
- 1:11Speaker 1: It's a fun episode and there's a lot more to come.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Enjoy.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Ray, thanks for taking the time to sit down with
- 1:26Speaker 1: us ahead of a really exciting game on Sunday Night
- 1:29Speaker 1: Football This season kicks off on a huge stage for
- 1:32Speaker 1: you guys. When does the excitement set in for Ray Davis?
- 1:36Speaker 2: Uh?
- 1:36Speaker 3: Probably like right before kickoff. I think it's like the
- 1:38Speaker 3: calm before the storm. I'm just taking it, you know,
- 1:41Speaker 3: minute by minute, hour by hour, and I think right
- 1:44Speaker 3: when the kickoff comes in, it'd be like, holy you know, Holy.
- 1:46Speaker 4: Moly, this is real good.
- 1:47Speaker 1: You get the rush of energy right before kick You're like,
- 1:50Speaker 1: let's do this thing.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Yeah, get you hit that smelling salt, and then you're
- 1:54Speaker 3: ready to hit the field.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Hit the smelling salt. That's Ray Davis's secret sauce to
- 1:59Speaker 1: get ready for the game. Where you had six total
- 2:02Speaker 1: touchdowns in your rookie season, a productive year for you.
- 2:05Speaker 1: What energy are you bringing into year two.
- 2:08Speaker 3: To could just continue to be me, you know and
- 2:10Speaker 3: continue to just have fun. And I think all the
- 2:12Speaker 3: little mental mistakes I was making as a rookie, I'm
- 2:15Speaker 3: trying to fix those things and just embrace my role
- 2:18Speaker 3: and go out there and show year or two that
- 2:20Speaker 3: I can continue to stack days and stack games.
- 2:22Speaker 1: You said, continue to have fun. How do you define
- 2:25Speaker 1: fun on the football field?
- 2:27Speaker 3: Just understanding there's gonna be bad plays and you just
- 2:29Speaker 3: can't hold yourself down and dwell on that play.
- 2:32Speaker 4: You gotta have fun.
- 2:33Speaker 3: You're in the NFL and get to play in front
- 2:35Speaker 3: of thousands of fans and and just to be able
- 2:38Speaker 3: to live a dream that most people love to live.
- 2:40Speaker 4: So I gotta be able to have fun with and
- 2:41Speaker 4: smile through all the chaos.
- 2:42Speaker 1: We see you smile a lot out there, so it
- 2:44Speaker 1: looks like you're having fun. Offensive coordinator Joe Brady said,
- 2:47Speaker 1: You've done a great job of growing in the offense
- 2:50Speaker 1: this offseason.
- 2:51Speaker 2: How does that transformation happen?
- 2:53Speaker 4: It was really just get in the playbook and understanding that.
- 2:56Speaker 3: You know, when me and Joe talk, it was, Hey,
- 2:57Speaker 3: I'm gonna throw a lot on your play Let's see
- 2:59Speaker 3: how much you can handle when that all throughout the
- 3:01Speaker 3: summer just stuck in my brain. Let's make sure I'm
- 3:03Speaker 3: dialing on pass protection, make sure I'm downing on my runs,
- 3:06Speaker 3: my reads, and then you know, when the camp comes,
- 3:08Speaker 3: it's about showing him.
- 3:10Speaker 4: I wanted to lab.
- 3:11Speaker 3: I got to work everything you told me to get
- 3:13Speaker 3: better at I promise you I got better.
- 3:15Speaker 1: At Why does the sinker swim mentality work for you?
- 3:18Speaker 4: That's life. That's always just been my whole life.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Sink or swim, right, you know, we gotta when you're
- 3:22Speaker 3: back against the wall, you're gonna photo or you're gonna
- 3:24Speaker 3: go out there and do what you gotta do.
- 3:26Speaker 4: So I apply that and everything that I do, And like.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Even when I'm cooking, it's like a sinker swim, Like
- 3:30Speaker 3: either this food's gonna taste good, it's gonna taste bad.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Okay, what are we cooking now?
- 3:36Speaker 4: The basics still the basics.
- 3:37Speaker 3: I'm working my way up a little bit, but yeah,
- 3:40Speaker 3: you know, I'll look at stuff on TikTok and I'm like,
- 3:42Speaker 3: let's try that.
- 3:43Speaker 4: I'm like, I don't know if it tastes good.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Or not, But what's swimming? What's doing well in the kitchen?
- 3:48Speaker 2: And what sunk the season?
- 3:50Speaker 4: The biggest thing was, you know, me and DC. DC
- 3:52Speaker 4: does Fat Boy Fridays.
- 3:53Speaker 3: I do Big Back Thursdays, and so we collabed and
- 3:56Speaker 3: we made these up buffalo chicken tacos off of TikTok.
- 4:00Speaker 3: I saw and I sent it to him, and that
- 4:01Speaker 3: was swimming in the deep man and in the shallow
- 4:03Speaker 3: wind it did perfect.
- 4:05Speaker 4: And then the sinking probably was the ranch that I made.
- 4:07Speaker 4: It was not good.
- 4:08Speaker 2: The ranch from scratch.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Okay, that's that's a big step to be like, I'm
- 4:13Speaker 1: gonna I'm gonna try cooking and I'm gonna try to
- 4:15Speaker 1: make ranch from scratch.
- 4:17Speaker 4: It was a big sink.
- 4:19Speaker 1: It's scrolling through TikTok something that you like to do
- 4:21Speaker 1: just to relax at the end.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Of the day, mostly just for food.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Like I'll try to find stuff here in Buffalo if
- 4:27Speaker 3: I see some like foodie people from Buffalo, or I'll
- 4:29Speaker 3: just look at recipes and I'll send it over to
- 4:32Speaker 3: DC and I'm like, yo, maybe we should do this.
- 4:33Speaker 4: But outside, I just like looking at the sky.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Do you have a go to meal that you have
- 4:39Speaker 1: for yourself to reward yourself after a big game.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Yeah, shout out, Lucia's got to get me a wagu
- 4:46Speaker 3: steak at Lucia's. Oh, that's just definitely the celebration of.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Meal right there.
- 4:50Speaker 2: I like it.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Your game has been described in so many different ways
- 4:54Speaker 1: through just your rookie season. It's Ray Davis is a bulldozer.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Ray Davis is a hand he's a ball of nails.
- 5:03Speaker 1: What's been your favorite way that you've heard your game
- 5:06Speaker 1: described ball of.
- 5:07Speaker 4: Nails is a new one for me. I've never heard
- 5:09Speaker 4: that one.
- 5:10Speaker 3: I get it a lot, you know, I get a
- 5:11Speaker 3: bowling ball, I get just a big old rock, like
- 5:14Speaker 3: I've got it all.
- 5:16Speaker 4: You know, not school and everything. But I just try
- 5:17Speaker 4: to tell people, man, just call me versatile.
- 5:19Speaker 5: You know.
- 5:19Speaker 3: I got to just be this big bulldozer kind of back,
- 5:22Speaker 3: like I could do it all. So Ken, I just
- 5:23Speaker 3: prefer people to just call me a versatile back.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Okay, versatile back. You heard it here first on Inside
- 5:28Speaker 1: the Charge. Speaking of versus versatile, you showed that this
- 5:32Speaker 1: offseason with your leg You're not just a running back, Ray,
- 5:36Speaker 1: you are also a kicker. You got to kick an
- 5:39Speaker 1: extra point in the preseason game against the Giants.
- 5:42Speaker 2: I heard.
- 5:43Speaker 1: The process leading up to this was a quick stop
- 5:46Speaker 1: at Dick's Sporting Goods to buy the cleats.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Take me through it.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Well, you know, shout out to our equipment staff. Once
- 5:53Speaker 3: we found out that it was a possibility. You know,
- 5:55Speaker 3: I talked to Spence, talk to Jeff and Scobes, and
- 5:57Speaker 3: I'm like, yo, we might need a cleat I don't.
- 6:00Speaker 4: I don't have a cleat.
- 6:01Speaker 3: We're going to need a cleat, And I was like,
- 6:02Speaker 3: do you guys have a ten and a half, And
- 6:04Speaker 3: sadly Tea Bats doesn't wear the same size as me,
- 6:07Speaker 3: so he didn have an extra shoe. And so they
- 6:09Speaker 3: made the runover the Dick Sporting Good and they were
- 6:11Speaker 3: able to get the cleat. And we just knew that
- 6:13Speaker 3: cleat was going to mean something special once we're able
- 6:15Speaker 3: to kick it.
- 6:16Speaker 4: Kick the kick the ball in the field goal. So
- 6:18Speaker 4: I have the cleat framed in my house.
- 6:19Speaker 2: You haven't framed it.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Yeah, one for one field go to tenth.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Hey, maybe two for two in the future, one day,
- 6:29Speaker 1: maybe next season. Over retiring, okay, retiring because you want
- 6:33Speaker 1: to retire one hundred percent field goal, make extra point,
- 6:36Speaker 1: make percentage.
- 6:37Speaker 2: I I want to go down.
- 6:38Speaker 3: As the greatest kicker of all time. Guarantee you and
- 6:42Speaker 3: I will be the greatest care of all time. No
- 6:44Speaker 3: one's one for one like.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Me, No one's one for one like Ray Davis. Okay,
- 6:47Speaker 1: you go out there to kick the extra point and
- 6:50Speaker 1: Sean McDermott detailed we want to try this because he's
- 6:54Speaker 1: our emergency kicker, and we need to go through everything
- 6:58Speaker 1: that happens leading up to Okay, Ray needs to change
- 7:01Speaker 1: his shoe in like thirty seconds when you get out
- 7:04Speaker 1: on the field. Were there any nerves in that moment
- 7:08Speaker 1: of all eyes are on me right now?
- 7:10Speaker 3: So the funny thing is on the sideline tape comes
- 7:12Speaker 3: up and he's like, you're gonna kick the next field, Gode.
- 7:14Speaker 3: I'm like, all right, cool, and then I'm like, oh, wait,
- 7:17Speaker 3: we're about to score. So we Dawson scores and I'm
- 7:20Speaker 3: like kicking off the shoe tape, just trying to grab
- 7:22Speaker 3: this shoe. I'm like, no, no, no, I got it. I
- 7:24Speaker 3: kick it off. We thought the shoe on. It wasn't
- 7:25Speaker 3: even fully on if anybody see, it was a kind
- 7:27Speaker 3: of halfway off my foot. And I remember d Doc
- 7:31Speaker 3: coming back and setting up and he's like, yo, we
- 7:32Speaker 3: got ten seconds, and I'm like, oh, I can't even
- 7:34Speaker 3: go through my steps.
- 7:35Speaker 4: I'm like, I don't know what's gonna happen. And then
- 7:38Speaker 4: I just decided to go, whoa secret swim, Let's let's
- 7:41Speaker 4: let's hope I make it. And I made it.
- 7:43Speaker 3: And we looked at each other, at me and Brad,
- 7:44Speaker 3: and we go holy, I made it. So it was
- 7:47Speaker 3: a shocking wasn't nervous.
- 7:48Speaker 1: But I was like, I made it though, I mean
- 7:50Speaker 1: to have the shoe half on, to not go through
- 7:54Speaker 1: your walk up process to kicking that ball.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Total athlete right there.
- 8:00Speaker 1: What was the best comment you heard once you came
- 8:02Speaker 1: back to the bench.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Uh, you know, everybody expected me to make it.
- 8:07Speaker 3: It wasn't a lot of comments, but you know, my
- 8:10Speaker 3: running backs, Tie and Diev was just like they was
- 8:12Speaker 3: just pumping me up and hyping me up.
- 8:13Speaker 4: So it was pretty cool.
- 8:14Speaker 1: One of the best storylines this offseason was the fact
- 8:17Speaker 1: that the Bills drafted a couple of Kentucky guys. You
- 8:20Speaker 1: are a Kentucky man yourself. Dean Walker gets added to
- 8:24Speaker 1: the roster Maxwell Harriston as well. What did the Kentucky
- 8:27Speaker 1: boys do in their free time here in Buffalo?
- 8:30Speaker 2: Uh?
- 8:31Speaker 3: Max is probably always at barbell I can tell you
- 8:33Speaker 3: that for sure. Dion's sitting at home probably, and me,
- 8:36Speaker 3: I'm just sitting at home. But we got a chance
- 8:37Speaker 3: to all hang out. You know, Max was living with
- 8:39Speaker 3: me first first couple of weeks he was here, so
- 8:41Speaker 3: we got to be around each other a bunch and
- 8:43Speaker 3: got to explore Buffalo and saying with Dion. I was
- 8:45Speaker 3: just in Kentucky with Dion at the game, so we
- 8:47Speaker 3: got the hang out a little bit too. But also
- 8:50Speaker 3: another fun fact, another one of my teammates is here,
- 8:52Speaker 3: Sam Franklin.
- 8:53Speaker 2: We were at it true.
- 8:55Speaker 4: We were at temple together. So I'm three teammates.
- 8:57Speaker 2: People hear that.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Ray Davis is in Buffalo, and people come flocking. They're like,
- 9:01Speaker 1: I want to play with my college teammate again.
- 9:03Speaker 4: You watch out, Josh Allen. I'm here the.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Ray Davis Show.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Literally how neat is it to go back to a
- 9:10Speaker 1: school like Kentucky where you've had a year in the NFL.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Now you come back to a different home in Kentucky
- 9:17Speaker 1: and you get to see everybody and kind of soak
- 9:20Speaker 1: it all in.
- 9:21Speaker 4: I got a lot of love for everybody over at Kentucky.
- 9:24Speaker 4: You know that one year I had with them was
- 9:26Speaker 4: something special.
- 9:27Speaker 3: And the relationships that I gain and the resources that
- 9:29Speaker 3: I was able to gain, I mean they're going to
- 9:30Speaker 3: be lifelong relationships.
- 9:32Speaker 4: And both of my sisters actually go to school in Kentucky.
- 9:35Speaker 3: So it gives me another reason to go back a
- 9:36Speaker 3: bunch of times to be able to spend time with them,
- 9:38Speaker 3: but to be in a place where I call home
- 9:40Speaker 3: and somewhere that I know that I'm going to always
- 9:42Speaker 3: be loved and trusted. It's a place that I'll never forget.
- 9:46Speaker 3: It's also going to be a place that I'm going
- 9:47Speaker 3: to always want to be around.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Ray, you have an incredible story. It's one of perseverance.
- 9:53Speaker 1: It's one of sink or swim. As we've already talked
- 9:56Speaker 1: about in this episode, our videographers and of our content
- 10:01Speaker 1: team got to go home with you to California to
- 10:04Speaker 1: cover your story and your upbringing. What was something that
- 10:08Speaker 1: you learned about yourself again after kind of detailing how
- 10:12Speaker 1: Ray Davis came to be, I just.
- 10:14Speaker 3: Kind of learned like like I made it, Like I
- 10:17Speaker 3: made it out of this environment, Like I really got
- 10:19Speaker 3: to go back home after not being there for so
- 10:21Speaker 3: long and not being able to take them around, like
- 10:23Speaker 3: friends that I grew up with, or not being able
- 10:26Speaker 3: to take the crew around, just a lot of places
- 10:28Speaker 3: that I've really experienced, but it was because people were
- 10:30Speaker 3: no longer there. Those are bad moments, So it was
- 10:33Speaker 3: one of those, like I made it. I'm blessed to
- 10:35Speaker 3: be where I'm at, but I'm glad to be able
- 10:37Speaker 3: to bring a light onto my hometown and to show
- 10:40Speaker 3: like there was a struggle, like life wasn't perfect right,
- 10:43Speaker 3: and I'm in this situation him because of all the
- 10:45Speaker 3: child and tribulations I faced, and to be able to
- 10:47Speaker 3: take the crew back and show them, hey, it wasn't easy,
- 10:50Speaker 3: you know, but every pitch stop I went through, I'm
- 10:53Speaker 3: glad I'm here now.
- 10:54Speaker 1: To watch you smile through it all. To have the
- 10:57Speaker 1: personality you do is incredible. Everybody should take a look
- 11:01Speaker 1: at the episode if they haven't yet, It's on Buffalo
- 11:03Speaker 1: Bills dot com. And your big brother You're You're huge
- 11:07Speaker 1: into the Big Brother's Big Sisters program. Your big brother
- 11:11Speaker 1: Patrick is going to join us later on this episode.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Got any questions we should ask Patrick?
- 11:17Speaker 3: Ask him if he still thinks he could beat me
- 11:20Speaker 3: in a race. Okay, I think he'll stand on that.
- 11:23Speaker 3: But I didn't even know that, so that's pretty sure.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Yeah, we're gonna interview him in about thirty minutes here.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Oh shoot, that's cool. Man, Tell him I missed him.
- 11:29Speaker 3: I haven't talked to him in a minute. I'm so
- 11:31Speaker 3: busy with camp. But he knows I got a lot
- 11:32Speaker 3: of love for him. I'm excited to get Peter and
- 11:35Speaker 3: Miles to a game.
- 11:36Speaker 2: I love it. Thanks for sitting down with us, Ray,
- 11:38Speaker 2: Thank you so much.
- 11:39Speaker 1: We just had an incredible interview with Ray Davis, and
- 11:42Speaker 1: now I'm so excited to have Patrick Dowly join the conversation.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Who knows Ray more than most people.
- 11:49Speaker 1: In Buffalo, and Ray is so special to you because
- 11:53Speaker 1: Ray was your little brother. You guys are involved in
- 11:55Speaker 1: the Big Brother's Big Sisters program in San Francisco and
- 11:59Speaker 1: got matched up up with each other more than fifteen
- 12:02Speaker 1: years ago. We all saw the Beyond Blooe and Red
- 12:06Speaker 1: episode that went out this off season where Ray goes
- 12:09Speaker 1: home and details his story. Patrick, you were a big
- 12:13Speaker 1: part of that video that came out. Is so inspiring
- 12:17Speaker 1: to see what Ray has done and just to see
- 12:20Speaker 1: how successful he has been in such a short amount
- 12:22Speaker 1: of time in the NFL. But first, for you, what
- 12:26Speaker 1: was it like getting to meet Ray for the first time?
- 12:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, look, I think you know, in mind boggling.
- 12:33Speaker 5: I think we're coming on into eighteen years now since
- 12:36Speaker 5: we first met, which is just unbelievable. I think both
- 12:40Speaker 5: he and I would probably share that sentiment. Time flies
- 12:42Speaker 5: and you're having fun. But look, getting involved in Big
- 12:45Speaker 5: Brothers Big Sisters was sort of a whimsical decision for me.
- 12:49Speaker 5: It was, you know, based on a desire to give back,
- 12:53Speaker 5: to try and have an impact on a child's life. Obviously,
- 12:57Speaker 5: had no idea who I was going to meet, who
- 12:59Speaker 5: was going to be paired with. And yeah, you know,
- 13:03Speaker 5: we've we've talked about it a little bit in the
- 13:05Speaker 5: in our in our documentary that we made, but just
- 13:08Speaker 5: you know, like I was sitting in a boys and
- 13:10Speaker 5: girls club in the tender Lloyd in San Francisco and
- 13:12Speaker 5: in walks a little kid eight years old, big old
- 13:15Speaker 5: smiles on his face, you know, his crazy green eyes
- 13:18Speaker 5: that I think everybody's uh, you know aware of, and
- 13:22Speaker 5: just a funny, precocious, great kid that I really hit
- 13:27Speaker 5: it off. You know, we hit it off of media.
- 13:29Speaker 5: I'm I've always been a big sports fan. He's obviously
- 13:32Speaker 5: a big sports fan, and it was just a very easy,
- 13:36Speaker 5: smooth introduction, which neither of us had any idea where
- 13:40Speaker 5: it was going to go. But you know, here we
- 13:43Speaker 5: are talking today, and you know, there's been you know
- 13:47Speaker 5: a lot of a lot of coverage about what about
- 13:49Speaker 5: our match and our relationship, and you know it just
- 13:51Speaker 5: continues to this day. It's it's a it's a relationship
- 13:54Speaker 5: born or a friendship born on trust and and you know,
- 13:59Speaker 5: being there for each each other.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Here we are eighteen years later.
- 14:02Speaker 1: When you have a friend of eighteen years or more,
- 14:05Speaker 1: I think you have a friend for life. That's a
- 14:07Speaker 1: meaningful friendship. When you go that long, you look back
- 14:11Speaker 1: on life and say, man, this person has.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Been in my life for more than fifteen years.
- 14:15Speaker 1: You spoke about Ray's smile, and that's something that if
- 14:19Speaker 1: you're around Ray in the building, if you have an
- 14:22Speaker 1: interaction with Ray at a game. Ray Davis has this
- 14:27Speaker 1: smile that just illuminates a room. It's easy to feel
- 14:32Speaker 1: the warmth coming off of him. In some of your
- 14:35Speaker 1: first interactions with Ray, when did you know how great
- 14:39Speaker 1: Ray's heart was?
- 14:41Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean it's something that, as you mentioned, he
- 14:44Speaker 5: wears his heart on his sleeve. It's easy to tell
- 14:47Speaker 5: that there's a beautiful heart inside of this person. And
- 14:50Speaker 5: that was clear even then. And like I mentioned before,
- 14:54Speaker 5: I had no idea the background. I had no idea
- 14:56Speaker 5: the story. I had no idea what I was walking into.
- 14:59Speaker 5: But I guess you know, I I live life by
- 15:03Speaker 5: the mantra of always giving everybody the benefit of the doubt.
- 15:05Speaker 5: And you know, trust everybody until they give you a
- 15:08Speaker 5: reason to not trust them. And Ray has never once
- 15:10Speaker 5: given me a reason to not trust him. And I
- 15:13Speaker 5: think that, you know, his ability to trust me early
- 15:17Speaker 5: on was incredibly impressive, you know now that I and
- 15:21Speaker 5: we know the story, the backstory. The fact that he
- 15:25Speaker 5: was willing to open up, the fact that he was
- 15:26Speaker 5: willing to trust me so quickly, really, you know, says
- 15:30Speaker 5: a lot about him. You know, he was looking for
- 15:33Speaker 5: somebody to you know, not necessarily help him out, but
- 15:36Speaker 5: just sort of be a friend and be somebody that
- 15:38Speaker 5: he could trust. And I, you know, but you know,
- 15:43Speaker 5: I provided that for him. And I didn't even know
- 15:45Speaker 5: I was doing it, frankly, but you know, that's my nature,
- 15:48Speaker 5: and you know, his his his natural demeanor, my natural
- 15:52Speaker 5: demeanor or a great fit. So it was it was
- 15:54Speaker 5: pretty obvious. And then, you know, during our first couple
- 15:58Speaker 5: of outings, you know, we went to a we went
- 16:00Speaker 5: to a baseball game, We would go get a bite
- 16:02Speaker 5: to eat or something like that. Just smooth and easy, right,
- 16:06Speaker 5: We're both fairly easy, you know, we're both very easy
- 16:09Speaker 5: going people. But you know that again, you know, our
- 16:13Speaker 5: natural our natures just sort of blended in a nice way.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Getting to see Ray graduate high school, his success in
- 16:21Speaker 1: college football playing for SEC schools. Now seeing what he's
- 16:26Speaker 1: done in just one year in the NFL. How has
- 16:29Speaker 1: watching his growth and upbringing over the last several years
- 16:35Speaker 1: changed you and your family for the better?
- 16:39Speaker 5: I mean in unbelievable ways. You know, I met Ray
- 16:42Speaker 5: when I was still a bachelor. I've you know, since
- 16:44Speaker 5: gotten married since had two beautiful boys, Peter and Miles.
- 16:50Speaker 5: You know, but watching Ray and bringing, you know, being
- 16:53Speaker 5: raised big through his childhood and through my bachelorhood was
- 16:57Speaker 5: an unbelievable preparation for what marriage, family, life, raising children
- 17:03Speaker 5: is going.
- 17:03Speaker 1: To be like.
- 17:04Speaker 5: Right, Ray, like every other kid on earth, has had
- 17:07Speaker 5: ups and downs, right you know, despite his his background
- 17:11Speaker 5: being a little bit tougher than or being a lot
- 17:13Speaker 5: tougher than most other people's, he had the normal ups
- 17:16Speaker 5: and downs that you could expect. Now, you know, there
- 17:19Speaker 5: were definitely times where I was scratching my head and saying,
- 17:22Speaker 5: is college in the future here? You know, I don't know,
- 17:24Speaker 5: But like he got through high school and he graduated
- 17:27Speaker 5: from phenomenal high schools. He got into college, you know,
- 17:31Speaker 5: graduated from Vanderbilt, an unbelievable university down in the in
- 17:35Speaker 5: the SEC. He made it to the NFL. All of
- 17:39Speaker 5: these things were just a testament to who this guy
- 17:42Speaker 5: is and really provided me and now my wife and
- 17:46Speaker 5: my kids an example of what fortitude and what drive
- 17:50Speaker 5: and what grit can actually get you. So you know,
- 17:54Speaker 5: to to summarize quickly, he's been an unbelievable inspiration to
- 17:58Speaker 5: me and my family throughout his entire journey.
- 18:00Speaker 2: It's so cool.
- 18:01Speaker 1: And when you watch the Bills documentary, the Beyond Blue
- 18:04Speaker 1: and Red episode about Ray Davis, there's this line that
- 18:07Speaker 1: you have where you're recalling the game that Ray had
- 18:11Speaker 1: against Kentucky or when he was playing for Kentucky against Florida.
- 18:15Speaker 1: I should say where Ray goes off for four touchdowns
- 18:19Speaker 1: and you say, that's when I knew Sundays were coming.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Now that Sundays are here, what's been your favorite part
- 18:26Speaker 1: about watching Ray Davis in the league.
- 18:29Speaker 5: I mean, just seeing him in the league from from
- 18:32Speaker 5: my perspective is unbelievable. Right, this is somebody I know
- 18:35Speaker 5: incredibly well, right, But I think the more the cooler
- 18:40Speaker 5: aspect of is watching my kids watch him play and
- 18:44Speaker 5: just seeing that, you know, in it there. My boys
- 18:46Speaker 5: are nine and seven. They love Ray. They've met him
- 18:48Speaker 5: multiple times. They have a friend that's in the NFL.
- 18:51Speaker 5: You know, they are literally jumping up and down every
- 18:54Speaker 5: time he touches the ball, every time he scores a touchdown.
- 18:57Speaker 5: It's unbelievable. Now, if I had to come up with
- 19:00Speaker 5: one like seminal memory we did last year against the
- 19:04Speaker 5: Jets Monday night football, James was hurt. Ray got the
- 19:07Speaker 5: start he had, you know, Josh had this rollout to
- 19:09Speaker 5: the right sort of hail Mary pass, you know, fifty
- 19:12Speaker 5: something yards.
- 19:13Speaker 4: You know.
- 19:13Speaker 5: I was talking to Ram like, what happened on a thing?
- 19:15Speaker 5: He's like, I completely lost it in the light. It
- 19:17Speaker 5: hit me right in the middle of the chest pat
- 19:19Speaker 5: and I kind of had to catch it in my
- 19:20Speaker 5: lap before I went down. I mean, it was just,
- 19:23Speaker 5: you know, for me, an unbelievable play. And again, like
- 19:26Speaker 5: I said, kids jumping up and down, screaming, just such
- 19:29Speaker 5: a cool experience. You know, we see him run a lot,
- 19:31Speaker 5: but to see him catch long range passes as well unreal.
- 19:35Speaker 1: I think that's when Ray showed off his versatility to
- 19:38Speaker 1: the world.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Hey, I'm more than a running back.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Look how I can help Josh Allen in this element
- 19:45Speaker 1: of the game. Ray also got to show the world
- 19:48Speaker 1: this offseason, Hey, if you need me to be a kicker,
- 19:51Speaker 1: I can be your kicker. He did it in the
- 19:53Speaker 1: preseason game against the Giants, kicked an extra point successfully.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Was incredible to watch him change out his shoe was
- 20:00Speaker 1: that quickly. How surprised were you to see, Oh, there
- 20:03Speaker 1: goes Ray Davis now turning into a kicker.
- 20:06Speaker 5: It's a funny story. I'm not at all surprised. And
- 20:09Speaker 5: the reason is I I played rugby when I was young,
- 20:12Speaker 5: and I was the goalkicker on my rugby team. So
- 20:14Speaker 5: I used to take Ray out to Stanford in other
- 20:16Speaker 5: places and teach him how to kick rugby balls, which
- 20:19Speaker 5: is a similar sort of But you know, so, no,
- 20:23Speaker 5: I would never ever claim responsibility for any of his
- 20:27Speaker 5: athletic ability, but you know, I think, you know, I
- 20:32Speaker 5: used to talk to him a lot about that, and
- 20:34Speaker 5: you know, I think, so it doesn't surprise me. And
- 20:35Speaker 5: I knew that he could do this, and he's obviously
- 20:38Speaker 5: got some pretty powerful legs behind underneath him, So not
- 20:42Speaker 5: at all surprised to see him kick, and I would
- 20:43Speaker 5: love to see him get the opportunity in the regular.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Season, right, speaking of athletic ability, I said, Ray, what
- 20:49Speaker 1: question do we have to ask Patrick? And he said,
- 20:52Speaker 1: ask Patrick if he thinks I can still if he
- 20:54Speaker 1: thinks he can still beat me in a race, What's
- 20:58Speaker 1: what's the decision here?
- 21:00Speaker 5: So this has been a long running joke, and I've
- 21:02Speaker 5: always always messed them that I could always beat him
- 21:05Speaker 5: and always beat him, And unfortunately I just had my
- 21:07Speaker 5: fiftieth birthday, so I think now my hamstrings would probably explode.
- 21:12Speaker 5: If you're up the police, I've given I got to
- 21:15Speaker 5: hang him up right, So it's time and uh, I will,
- 21:18Speaker 5: with pride and honor hand the crowd over hand the
- 21:21Speaker 5: crown over to Ray.
- 21:22Speaker 4: Is the fastest guy.
- 21:23Speaker 1: In our right, Ray the fastest guy in the relationship here.
- 21:28Speaker 2: That's right.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Ray's going to have an exciting year ahead of him
- 21:32Speaker 1: second year in the NFL. One of our offensive One
- 21:35Speaker 1: of our coaches on offense, Joe Brady, our offensive coordinator, said,
- 21:38Speaker 1: Raised done a great job of understanding this offense during
- 21:42Speaker 1: the off season. What are you expecting from Ray in
- 21:45Speaker 1: year two?
- 21:46Speaker 5: I'm expecting more of the same. You know, I was
- 21:49Speaker 5: delighted to see James re sign. You know, it's great
- 21:52Speaker 5: to have such a great leader in front of him
- 21:55Speaker 5: and somebody that he can sort of emulate and learn from.
- 21:57Speaker 5: And Ray is you know, to his credit, he's a
- 21:59Speaker 5: great learner. He watches what's going on around him and
- 22:02Speaker 5: he picks it up and he learned, and you know,
- 22:04Speaker 5: like like you'r oc said, you know, he learns these offenses.
- 22:08Speaker 5: But what I also expect is when Ray does get
- 22:11Speaker 5: his opportunities, expect fireworks. I from every time every Pop
- 22:16Speaker 5: Warner I watched him every Pop Warner game, every high
- 22:18Speaker 5: school game, every college game. Just hold your breath when
- 22:21Speaker 5: he gets the ball, because he's going to do something insane.
- 22:24Speaker 5: So I expect more of the same and a similar,
- 22:27Speaker 5: if not higher touchdown count.
- 22:29Speaker 1: I love that hold your breath and expect fireworks. I
- 22:32Speaker 1: think that's a great way to describe Ray Davis's game
- 22:35Speaker 1: because it is so fun watching him with the ball
- 22:38Speaker 1: in his hands.
- 22:38Speaker 2: He's such a bruiser out there.
- 22:40Speaker 1: You know it might be small, but like watch out,
- 22:42Speaker 1: he's going to barrel through a defensive line. I know,
- 22:45Speaker 1: big brothers, big Sisters is so near and dear to
- 22:49Speaker 1: your heart, both you and Ray. How are you guys
- 22:53Speaker 1: continuing on with your relationship with that organization?
- 22:56Speaker 5: So, I mean, we are both very, very committed to this.
- 22:59Speaker 5: We've done a number of activities around, you know, for
- 23:02Speaker 5: the Big Brothers, including he was inducted into the Big
- 23:05Speaker 5: Brothers Big Sisters Hall of Fame over the summer. He
- 23:07Speaker 5: was unfortunately a camp but I had the opportunity to
- 23:09Speaker 5: fly out to Philadelphia accept that award for him, which
- 23:13Speaker 5: was one of the great honors of my life, to
- 23:15Speaker 5: see him or you know, to represent him on the
- 23:17Speaker 5: big stage out there, and then moving forward a new
- 23:21Speaker 5: piece of news. As of yesterday, I haven't even told
- 23:23Speaker 5: Ray this, but I have had the honor of being
- 23:26Speaker 5: elected to the board of directors for the Big Brothers
- 23:28Speaker 5: Big Sisters Chapter in the San Francisco Bay area. So
- 23:31Speaker 5: I will be taking sort of, you know, a leading
- 23:33Speaker 5: role and trying to continue to grow this organization, create matches,
- 23:38Speaker 5: create opportunities for these kids, and encourage more bigs to
- 23:42Speaker 5: come out and sign up. There are a list of
- 23:44Speaker 5: kids out there waiting to be matched up with the
- 23:46Speaker 5: Big It doesn't take much to be a big, and
- 23:50Speaker 5: the impact you can have on a little's life is unbelievable.
- 23:52Speaker 5: So I'm really honored to be elected to that board
- 23:56Speaker 5: and really looking forward to giving back in a really
- 23:58Speaker 5: meaningful way to try and continue what Ray and I
- 24:01Speaker 5: have and recreate what Ray and I got.
- 24:04Speaker 4: To do together.
- 24:05Speaker 1: That's really awesome and congratulations, so cool to hear. One
- 24:08Speaker 1: of my favorite things about getting to learn about some
- 24:11Speaker 1: of our new players when they get drafted or brought
- 24:13Speaker 1: to Buffalo is the causes that come along with them,
- 24:16Speaker 1: what they are so close to, what they love to
- 24:20Speaker 1: do in their free time, how they love to help
- 24:23Speaker 1: whatever community they're a part of, whether that be in
- 24:26Speaker 1: Buffalo or in San Francisco. It's awesome to see these
- 24:29Speaker 1: players get this huge stage and then use that huge
- 24:32Speaker 1: stage for good in our world. And it's been great
- 24:35Speaker 1: to see what Ray's done with it already and partnering
- 24:38Speaker 1: with you in that way.
- 24:39Speaker 5: And more to come. We are both very committed to
- 24:42Speaker 5: continuing our involvement here, so really welcome.
- 24:44Speaker 2: More to come.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Well, Patrick, thank you so much for taking the time
- 24:47Speaker 1: to join us on this episode of Inside the Charge.
- 24:50Speaker 2: An exciting season ahead for the Buffalo Bills and Ray Davis.
- 24:54Speaker 2: We cannot wait.
- 24:55Speaker 5: Indeed we too. Go Ray and Go Bills.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Thank you, Ray and Go Bills. Thanks Bat.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Thank you so much for tuning into the first episode
- 25:03Speaker 1: of the Inside the Charge podcast for the twenty twenty
- 25:06Speaker 1: five NFL season. There's so much more to come. We're
- 25:09Speaker 1: diving into so many stories that our players have and
- 25:13Speaker 1: learning about who they are without the football helmet on.
- 25:16Speaker 1: I'm excited for you guys to join us as we
- 25:19Speaker 1: continue throughout the season.
