Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, Discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Welcome to Disgraceland, the after Party.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode, a little thing we'd
- 0:31Speaker 1: like to call the after party. This is the show
- 0:34Speaker 1: after the show, the party after the party, the bridge
- 0:36Speaker 1: to get you from one full episode or disgrace Sland
- 0:38Speaker 1: to the other, the backyard to dig into the dirt.
- 0:41Speaker 1: On this bonus episode, we are talking about Britney Murphy
- 0:46Speaker 1: and Brittany has Us talking about some really really bad moms,
- 0:50Speaker 1: and of course we are diving into your voicemails, text
- 0:52Speaker 1: and more and as always, a whole lot of rosie.
- 0:55Speaker 1: All right, Discos, let's get into it. Being a mom
- 1:13Speaker 1: is one of the toughest jobs there is. The hours
- 1:16Speaker 1: are long, endless, even in the pay. Depending on your
- 1:19Speaker 1: lot in life, it could be short. I'm not a
- 1:21Speaker 1: mom in case you couldn't tell. I have one, though,
- 1:23Speaker 1: and I'm also married to one. And I also have
- 1:25Speaker 1: a mother in law. And I even have a sibling
- 1:27Speaker 1: who is a mom. I am lucky. All the moms
- 1:29Speaker 1: that I know are great. I admire them. I'm even
- 1:33Speaker 1: inspired by them. Dad's by comparison. I know firsthand we
- 1:37Speaker 1: have it easy and kids, well, if they have good moms,
- 1:40Speaker 1: they're probably doing okay. But what about bad moms? If
- 1:44Speaker 1: you listen to this week's episode on Britney Murphy, you
- 1:47Speaker 1: know where my head is at. Bad moms are a
- 1:50Speaker 1: thing more of a thing historically, both in Hollywood and
- 1:53Speaker 1: beyond than I realized. The true crime bad mom corner
- 1:58Speaker 1: of the street is a fascinated one. I ever heard
- 2:00Speaker 1: of Mob Barker, the Barker Gang from the nineteen thirties.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Mob Barker was a horrendous mom. Her criminal compulsions made
- 2:07Speaker 1: quick felons out of her four sons, Arthur, Herman, Fred,
- 2:10Speaker 1: and Lloyd. Murderers. These guys, armed, robbers, kidnappers, the Barker Boys,
- 2:15Speaker 1: they did a little bit of it all at the
- 2:16Speaker 1: behest of their gangster mom, and for it, they were
- 2:20Speaker 1: all either gunned down or in prison, including Mob Barker herself,
- 2:24Speaker 1: who was shot and killed by FBI agents alongside her
- 2:26Speaker 1: son Fred in nineteen thirty five. Nice work, Mom. Does
- 2:31Speaker 1: the name Mary Anne Cotton ring a bell for any
- 2:33Speaker 1: of you? True crime historians out there. This is another
- 2:36Speaker 1: Mom of the Year candidate. Marianne was. She was a bad, bad, bad,
- 2:43Speaker 1: bad bad person. She poisoned and killed eleven of her
- 2:46Speaker 1: thirteen children. Can you imagine eleven of her thirteen kids.
- 2:52Speaker 1: I don't know why I'm laughing. It's absurd, It's fucking nuts.
- 2:56Speaker 1: She also murdered four of her husbands, two of her lovers,
- 2:59Speaker 1: two other lucky souls. The insurance scam was Marianne Cotton's game.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Marianne had quite a kill sheet for her mother by
- 3:07Speaker 1: the time Scotland Yard wrangled her into custody, and her
- 3:10Speaker 1: demise was violent, painful, and not a good one, to
- 3:14Speaker 1: say the least. Sex Pistols bass guitarist Sid Vicious punk
- 3:17Speaker 1: rock icon. As a young child, he was used as
- 3:21Speaker 1: a drug mule by his mother and Beverly. His mother
- 3:24Speaker 1: was also responsible for Sid's early addiction to heroin. Sid's
- 3:28Speaker 1: mother's involvement in his death long believed to be a
- 3:31Speaker 1: self inflicted lethal heroin Doris. This is the subject of
- 3:34Speaker 1: the second episode that we ever produced on Disgracecent. For
- 3:36Speaker 1: those who haven't heard it, I'm not going to spoil
- 3:38Speaker 1: it for you, but I will say that the bad
- 3:39Speaker 1: mom vibes go far beyond the illegal drug muling and
- 3:43Speaker 1: are quite suspicious. So you should check that sid vicious
- 3:47Speaker 1: episode out if you have not already, and if you
- 3:49Speaker 1: have heard it, you should listen to it again because
- 3:51Speaker 1: it's a wild story, especially upon re listening all these
- 3:54Speaker 1: moms and we haven't even entered Hollywood yet. Okay, Drew
- 3:58Speaker 1: Barrymore's mom, Jade, introduced her daughter Drew, who was a
- 4:01Speaker 1: bona fide star by the age of seven, to the
- 4:04Speaker 1: wild goings on inside of Manhattan's Studio fifty four at
- 4:08Speaker 1: just the tender age of nine years old, where drugs,
- 4:12Speaker 1: mainly cocaine for young Drew were readily available and mom
- 4:15Speaker 1: was quick to pour the baileies over young Drew's ice cream.
- 4:18Speaker 1: By the time Drew was twelve, she tried killing herself
- 4:21Speaker 1: and her mom had her committed to a psych ward. Okay,
- 4:24Speaker 1: Brooke Shields, Okay, Brooke Shields's mother had Brooke posing in
- 4:28Speaker 1: Playboy at the age of ten. How was that legal?
- 4:32Speaker 1: You ask? I don't know, and I'm not confirming whether
- 4:34Speaker 1: or not ten year old Brookshields posed nude or not
- 4:37Speaker 1: because I'm afraid to enter those words. Into my search
- 4:40Speaker 1: bar for fear of having to do some awkward Pete
- 4:42Speaker 1: Townsend type quote unquote research explanation in front of a
- 4:46Speaker 1: future judge. So you guys can figure that one out
- 4:48Speaker 1: all on your own. There are more bad moms, of course,
- 4:51Speaker 1: this is just the tip of the iceberg. I didn't
- 4:53Speaker 1: even mention Dina Lohan or Joan Crawford, and you guys
- 4:57Speaker 1: likely know those stories. My point is that, like the
- 5:00Speaker 1: stories I mentioned stories, I'm betting most of us weren't
- 5:03Speaker 1: aware of the story of Britney Murphy's mother, a story
- 5:06Speaker 1: told in this week's full episode of Disgray s Land,
- 5:09Speaker 1: is a story that is also largely unknown, and it
- 5:12Speaker 1: is highly suspicious. Perhaps the reason it's so unknown is
- 5:17Speaker 1: because it's hard to tell the story without using conjecture.
- 5:20Speaker 1: It's not like Britney Murphy's mother was ever convicted or
- 5:23Speaker 1: anything like that. She was not. She was barely even accused.
- 5:27Speaker 1: The whole story is so damn messy and ugly that
- 5:31Speaker 1: I can just I just I can tell people just
- 5:33Speaker 1: avoid it. It's gross. They don't want to talk about it.
- 5:36Speaker 1: And it should be noted that Sharon Murphy, Brittany Murphy's mom,
- 5:39Speaker 1: refutes basically everything to Britney's father alleges, including the toxicology
- 5:44Speaker 1: report that said the circumstantial evidence seems if not damning,
- 5:48Speaker 1: then super super suspicious, And we can all look up
- 5:51Speaker 1: the facts and we can listen to the Britney Murphy
- 5:54Speaker 1: episode of Disgrace sand and make up our own minds
- 5:56Speaker 1: and come to our own judgment. Anyway, you kind of
- 5:59Speaker 1: tell Brittany Murphy's death highly suspicious, and Brittany Murphy was,
- 6:03Speaker 1: of course a celebrity, and that prompted my question to
- 6:05Speaker 1: you guys about which celebrities you think died most suspiciously,
- 6:10Speaker 1: Which celebrity cause of death you're calling bullshit on. More
- 6:13Speaker 1: of that coming up later in this bonus episode, But
- 6:15Speaker 1: in the meantime, speaking of celebrities, we have a whopper
- 6:19Speaker 1: of an icon coming next week in our episode on
- 6:22Speaker 1: Alfred Hitchcock, and this episode looks almost explicitly at the
- 6:26Speaker 1: famous director's controlling relationship with his starlet, Tippy Hedron and
- 6:31Speaker 1: the abuse that he put her through during the filming
- 6:34Speaker 1: of his iconic movie The Birds. Control is obviously the theme
- 6:40Speaker 1: for this episode, specifically male dominated exploitative control. So as
- 6:45Speaker 1: you listen to this upcoming Alfred Hitchcock episode, which is
- 6:49Speaker 1: a very critical look I should say at one of
- 6:51Speaker 1: my favorite directors, a man whose talent was almost immeasurable.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I mean, this guy just he invented new ways from
- 6:58Speaker 1: making movies. It's calling him talented seems like an understatement. Nonetheless,
- 7:06Speaker 1: he was incredibly problematic. So perhaps another thing to think
- 7:10Speaker 1: about while you're listening to this upcoming Alfred Hitchcock episode
- 7:15Speaker 1: is what I'm calling the Hitchcock dilemma, which is the
- 7:18Speaker 1: problem that we all have in this modern age, this
- 7:21Speaker 1: age of information. And the problem is this, we love
- 7:25Speaker 1: a director's films, but we know that this director was
- 7:28Speaker 1: a miserable, her full son of a bitch and made
- 7:31Speaker 1: people's lives miserable. But that doesn't make the movies any
- 7:35Speaker 1: less watchable. So what do we do? Okay? Well, for me,
- 7:38Speaker 1: I wish I could find it in me to signal
- 7:40Speaker 1: some sort of honest virtue here, but I cannot. If
- 7:42Speaker 1: it were announced tomorrow that Alfred Hitchcock was the goddamn
- 7:45Speaker 1: Zodiac killer, I don't think it would make me like
- 7:48Speaker 1: Rear Window any less. Okay, So the thing to think
- 7:51Speaker 1: about when you're listening to the Disgraceline episode on Alfred Hitchcock,
- 7:54Speaker 1: is which problematic director or problematic actors film can you
- 8:01Speaker 1: not go without? Despite their horrific behavior. Richard Pryor was
- 8:07Speaker 1: violent towards the women in his life. But if I'm
- 8:09Speaker 1: cruising the channels at night and I come across the toy,
- 8:12Speaker 1: or if I'm on YouTube scrolling around and I see
- 8:14Speaker 1: some prior stand up bits from on YouTube, I'm not
- 8:18Speaker 1: not watching those things. Okay, and Woody Allen come on
- 8:21Speaker 1: man Any Hall Manhattan, two of the greatest films ever made,
- 8:25Speaker 1: and the problems that would come to later partly define
- 8:29Speaker 1: Woody Allen are now obvious in both of those films.
- 8:32Speaker 1: But still are we not going to watch those movies?
- 8:34Speaker 1: Maybe some of you won't, and if you don't, I
- 8:36Speaker 1: can't blame you. But I think the question that I'm
- 8:39Speaker 1: going to ask you guys for next week is going
- 8:41Speaker 1: to be about which problematic directors and actors have films
- 8:45Speaker 1: that you just can't do without? Who are they, who
- 8:47Speaker 1: are the directors, who are the actors, and what are
- 8:49Speaker 1: those films that are too good to not watch? Anyway,
- 8:53Speaker 1: That's all part of the upcoming out for a Hitchcock
- 8:54Speaker 1: episode of disgrace sandwhich is up and just a bit
- 8:56Speaker 1: in your feeds. I'll be back in just a bit
- 8:59Speaker 1: with your calls in your text all right. And last
- 9:20Speaker 1: week's after party we talked a lot about heavy metal bands,
- 9:22Speaker 1: big selling heavy metal bands, all relative to of course
- 9:25Speaker 1: last week's Metallic episode, and I mentioned Tool, and that
- 9:29Speaker 1: prompted a lot of feedback from you guys on the
- 9:32Speaker 1: need apparently for a Tool episode of Disgraceland, perhaps perhaps
- 9:37Speaker 1: in the future. In the meantime, here's Gretchen in the
- 9:41Speaker 1: four h two with some much needed female perspective.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Hi, Jake, Gretchen from the four roh two. I have
- 9:49Speaker 3: a question, how come you don't like send Lizzy? Just kidding? Hey,
- 9:53Speaker 3: girls at like Tool. Me being one of them forty
- 9:57Speaker 3: nine years young, nineteen ninety four, I first got put
- 10:01Speaker 3: on to them, great album, and I think a lot
- 10:05Speaker 3: of what they say, some of the double on tondras,
- 10:09Speaker 3: some of the lyrics, some of the deeper, darker stuff
- 10:13Speaker 3: resonated with kids that were born in the seventies, went
- 10:19Speaker 3: kind of read in the eighties, and a lot of
- 10:22Speaker 3: that hit home. So we interpreted those lyrics and obviously
- 10:27Speaker 3: the music was great watching him at a concert turned
- 10:30Speaker 3: his back to people in his underwear and performed that way.
- 10:33Speaker 3: The whole show not as cool, but definitely the music
- 10:37Speaker 3: very cool. Still read still holds up. I still listened
- 10:40Speaker 3: to a lot of songs Prison Sex, Good One, three Libras,
- 10:46Speaker 3: Perfect Circle, his Breakoff. Listen to that also. But did
- 10:50Speaker 3: you see those kids that covered forty six and two?
- 10:54Speaker 3: The whole orchestra of kids from this middle school band?
- 10:59Speaker 3: Director said, hey, cover forty six and two, and they did,
- 11:02Speaker 3: and it's on YouTube. It is pretty epic. Have a
- 11:05Speaker 3: great day, rock a rolla.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Thank you, Gretchen. I've seen two a couple of times myself,
- 11:09Speaker 1: and I can't say that I remember the underwear in
- 11:11Speaker 1: the back to the audience thing, but that might say
- 11:13Speaker 1: more about me than it does the band. Regardless. It's
- 11:17Speaker 1: like I hints. Like I mentioned at the beginning, it's
- 11:19Speaker 1: cool to get a female perspective on this band. I
- 11:21Speaker 1: appreciate it. Thank you, Gretchen. Guys six one seven nine
- 11:26Speaker 1: six six six three eight if you want to be
- 11:28Speaker 1: awesome like Gretchen and chime in on voicemail or text
- 11:32Speaker 1: the five to one three texts in. Hey, the Metallica
- 11:34Speaker 1: episode was insane. You summed up that era of my
- 11:37Speaker 1: favorite band in a great way. Paying tribute to Cliff
- 11:40Speaker 1: was monumental. The story about the murder in Texas was
- 11:42Speaker 1: news to me. The only thing I think you should
- 11:45Speaker 1: have worked on is how Cliff's dad encouraged the band
- 11:48Speaker 1: to continue on without his blessing in the push. The
- 11:52Speaker 1: demise of Cliff's legacy would have been a real disgrace.
- 11:56Speaker 1: And that's so true. We didn't cover Cliff's father influence
- 12:01Speaker 1: on Metallica after his son's death. Uh, thank you five p.
- 12:04Speaker 1: One three for pointing that out. Appreciate it very much.
- 12:07Speaker 1: As stated earlier, one of the subjects we've been discussing
- 12:10Speaker 1: obviously has been this BS celebrity cause of death relative
- 12:13Speaker 1: to the Britney Murphy episode and the six one seven
- 12:16Speaker 1: right saying, Hey, Jake, it's NICKI. I think one of
- 12:19Speaker 1: the suspicious deaths of two thousands is Aliyah. They said
- 12:23Speaker 1: she was afraid of small planes and that she had
- 12:26Speaker 1: been medicated before boarding that plane from the Bahamas, and
- 12:30Speaker 1: that her security guard had to carry her on. Hmmm, yes, suspicious, Nikki,
- 12:35Speaker 1: And I can tell you, Nikki, we are right now
- 12:37Speaker 1: working on in Aaliyah episode. So I hope you dig
- 12:40Speaker 1: it all right? More women chiming in on Tool. I
- 12:43Speaker 1: got to read this one. It's funny. This is Cheesecake
- 12:46Speaker 1: from the five but one, Jake love you. But girls
- 12:49Speaker 1: are indeed into Tool. Sure, dudes are the majority, but
- 12:52Speaker 1: there are a lot of us gals that love them too.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I became a fan back in the late nineties, fell
- 12:55Speaker 1: in love with the lyrical genius first, then the musical technicality.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Danny on the I'm so good they rock. I love them.
- 13:02Speaker 1: I am a woman. Hear me roar at a Tool show.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Cheesecake from the five oh one. Thank you you have
- 13:09Speaker 1: been heard? Okay. I hope you know that you've been
- 13:11Speaker 1: heard and you are appreciated. And I'm thankful for the
- 13:14Speaker 1: female perspective on one of the most beloved apparently metal
- 13:18Speaker 1: bands of all time. Tool, a band that I guess
- 13:20Speaker 1: I was kind of taken for granted, A band that
- 13:22Speaker 1: I'm going to go back and check out, and you know,
- 13:25Speaker 1: a band that perhaps we will cover in Disgraceland at
- 13:29Speaker 1: some point if I can find some angle in that
- 13:31Speaker 1: is disgraceful. That's that's my thinking. There's got to be
- 13:35Speaker 1: something there. They've been around for too long. Banana Underscore.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Diaz x X exclamation Point writes in on X Strange
- 13:44Speaker 1: Celebrity Deaths that I am not believing Maril Monroe covered
- 13:48Speaker 1: so well in your episodes. Hey, thank you, I appreciate that.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Don't mean to be self congratulatory there by reading your text,
- 13:57Speaker 1: but yeah, I think the Marilyn Monroe is the Grand
- 14:01Speaker 1: Pooba of bullshit celebrity death, celebrity causes of death. Sorry?
- 14:08Speaker 1: Did I say that correctly? I think I did? Yes?
- 14:10Speaker 1: All right, what else we got here? Hold? I want
- 14:12Speaker 1: to get some more dms at Disgrace and pod guys
- 14:14Speaker 1: on x Instagram and Facebook. Liam Renton writes in on
- 14:19Speaker 1: this is on Facebook, I believe, although I can't tell
- 14:22Speaker 1: on the Facebook app. What is a Facebook message? And
- 14:24Speaker 1: what is an Instagram message? Anymore? Oh? This is Instagram?
- 14:28Speaker 1: This is Liam Retton writes in just listen to the
- 14:30Speaker 1: entire Brittany Murphy podcast. Brilliant. Loved it so well thought
- 14:33Speaker 1: out and structured. Your voice is next level good. You
- 14:35Speaker 1: actually sound like Sean Mullens and the song Shimmer. Super cool,
- 14:39Speaker 1: great pod mate, Thanks Liam, appreciate you. Glad you dig
- 14:44Speaker 1: in the podcast. Now I need to go check out
- 14:46Speaker 1: some Sean Mullens. Andrew Grant writes in on the Brittany
- 14:49Speaker 1: Murphy episode, one of the saddest stories you put together.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Love the team's work, man, Andrew, you got it, and
- 14:55Speaker 1: it is a team effort here at Double Evis. It's
- 14:58Speaker 1: not just me behind the mic. There are many folks
- 15:00Speaker 1: who work on the research, work, on the writing, work,
- 15:02Speaker 1: on the production work, on the mixing, work, on the promoting.
- 15:05Speaker 1: And I thank you Andrew for mentioning the team there.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Appreciate you guys at Disgrace Lamb Pod. You want to
- 15:10Speaker 1: hit me up on Facebook, you want to hit me
- 15:12Speaker 1: on X, you want to hit me on Instagram. Can
- 15:15Speaker 1: respond to any in all questions six one seven nine
- 15:18Speaker 1: or six six six three eight. You want to leave
- 15:19Speaker 1: me a voicemail, you want to send me a text?
- 15:21Speaker 1: All right, stick around back in the flash, going to
- 15:24Speaker 1: announce the winners of our free merch this week, and
- 15:26Speaker 1: going to read some of your reviews and perhaps.
- 15:28Speaker 4: Get into some emails as well.
- 15:44Speaker 1: All right, guys, we are back more on this Metallica
- 15:47Speaker 1: episode we released a week ago. This is from Joseph
- 15:50Speaker 1: de Keir on Spotify, who says, I can honestly say
- 15:54Speaker 1: that this is my favorite episode of Disgrace, saying, you
- 15:57Speaker 1: guys definitely nailed it. Joseph, thanks, thank you. Get in touch,
- 16:01Speaker 1: all right, Joseph to kure, get in touch. We've got
- 16:04Speaker 1: some merch for you guys. You guys want to win
- 16:06Speaker 1: some free merch, you want to help out the show.
- 16:07Speaker 1: You can do both at the same time. You can
- 16:09Speaker 1: leave us some review on Spotify. You can leave us
- 16:11Speaker 1: a review on Apple Podcasts as well. And as you
- 16:14Speaker 1: are hearing here, we reward you guys a couple of
- 16:18Speaker 1: you each week with some free merch. Send them out
- 16:20Speaker 1: to you in the mail, t shirts, posters, pins, whatever
- 16:23Speaker 1: we've got lining around. So hit us up, all right,
- 16:26Speaker 1: Apple Podcasts and Spotify, leave us some reviews. That's what
- 16:29Speaker 1: helps the show get recognized. It's a good way to
- 16:31Speaker 1: promote the show. It's a good way to get Disgraceland
- 16:35Speaker 1: out into the world. Speaking of Apple podcasts, found Punk
- 16:39Speaker 1: leaves us a review it says as five stars says,
- 16:41Speaker 1: I never thought I never thought I'd be into the
- 16:43Speaker 1: quote unquote celebrity world because of all the ugly consumerism
- 16:47Speaker 1: and narcissism. But this podcast keeps me wanting to know
- 16:50Speaker 1: more about what goes on behind the scenes, and I
- 16:53Speaker 1: start seeing celebrities as more than just tabloid fodder and
- 16:56Speaker 1: plastic people. Thanks Bro, you got to thank you. Found
- 17:00Speaker 1: Hit us up, all right, hit us up and we'll
- 17:02Speaker 1: get some merch out to you. And I want to
- 17:04Speaker 1: say I've been thinking about this a lot, actually, okay,
- 17:06Speaker 1: because I can relate to Found Punk's sentiment here. I
- 17:12Speaker 1: never thought that I would be, you know, I like
- 17:15Speaker 1: to think a disgraced land. It started out purely music
- 17:17Speaker 1: and true crime. We've obviously expanded. We're covering actors, recovering athletes,
- 17:21Speaker 1: recovering artists of all stars and stripes. But it is
- 17:25Speaker 1: kind of a celebrity podcast in a weird way. I've
- 17:28Speaker 1: been telling people lately it's stories be from the dark
- 17:30Speaker 1: side of entertainment, which it certainly is. There's a darkness
- 17:33Speaker 1: that is at the undercoverent of all of these stories.
- 17:37Speaker 1: And though there are celebrity names that are in the
- 17:40Speaker 1: titles of all of these podcast episodes, and certainly these
- 17:44Speaker 1: are the subjects, make no bones about it. They're not
- 17:47Speaker 1: celebrity tabloid fodder in the least. Found Punk has nailed it.
- 17:51Speaker 1: These are human stories, and I'm researching an episode right
- 17:56Speaker 1: now about a massively famous celebrity, Matthew Perry from Friends,
- 18:01Speaker 1: and those of you who are on our Patreon you
- 18:04Speaker 1: know this already. Forgive me because I've been talking about
- 18:06Speaker 1: this in the chat over there and just mentioning it,
- 18:10Speaker 1: and it's I can't I don't know if I can
- 18:14Speaker 1: say it's one of the most human stories I've ever researched.
- 18:16Speaker 1: But there there's something going on with this research where
- 18:19Speaker 1: it is supremely depressing. Now, listen, I didn't grow up
- 18:22Speaker 1: a Matthew Perry fan. I didn't even grow up a
- 18:24Speaker 1: Friends fan. I came to Friends late, like when it
- 18:26Speaker 1: went on Netflix, or years after it went on Netflix.
- 18:30Speaker 1: I became a Friends fan after I'd already devoured Seinfeld
- 18:33Speaker 1: like five times. I actively disliked Friends back in the nineties,
- 18:39Speaker 1: and then I came to I came to someone. I
- 18:42Speaker 1: heard someone talk about the first season and how it
- 18:44Speaker 1: was actually really great. So I got interested and I
- 18:46Speaker 1: watched it, and I got looped in and I started
- 18:47Speaker 1: to appreciate it. And I can appreciate, you know, I
- 18:51Speaker 1: can appreciate big mainstream popcorny commercial content, you know, just
- 18:57Speaker 1: like I can appreciate Gg Allen. They're different thing, but
- 19:00Speaker 1: I can see the value in both. But I say
- 19:03Speaker 1: this to just point out that I did not grow
- 19:06Speaker 1: up like a you know, a fanatic for Friends or
- 19:09Speaker 1: Matthew Perry or anything like that. And I found myself
- 19:12Speaker 1: researching this episode, and frankly, I found myself to be
- 19:15Speaker 1: legitimately depressed over it. It is a sad, sad episode
- 19:22Speaker 1: to research. It is a sad story, and the the
- 19:27Speaker 1: the human piece of it, the addiction, the disease that
- 19:31Speaker 1: this guy had, the toll that it took on his life.
- 19:36Speaker 1: It's it's hard to digest, and it's going to be
- 19:39Speaker 1: even harder to write. And I'm not going to write
- 19:43Speaker 1: it like some tabloidy bullshit. I'm going to write it
- 19:46Speaker 1: so that the human piece of it is right there
- 19:48Speaker 1: at the center of the story. And I think that's
- 19:51Speaker 1: why you guys keep showing up here. And I appreciate you,
- 19:53Speaker 1: and I appreciate you found Punk for calling that out
- 19:56Speaker 1: in the in the reviews there on Apple Podcasts. I
- 19:58Speaker 1: want to read this other review you here too, because
- 20:01Speaker 1: it brings up a big, a larger point for me.
- 20:04Speaker 1: This one is from Megan Locke and it says great writing,
- 20:09Speaker 1: great style. Five stars is on Apple Podcasts. I love that.
- 20:12Speaker 1: I don't feel like I'm listening to a script written
- 20:13Speaker 1: by AI. Great work, love all your picks for topics,
- 20:17Speaker 1: awesome variety. I say this not to be self congratulatory,
- 20:20Speaker 1: though I'm not immune to that, as you can tell
- 20:22Speaker 1: from from these episodes. But the Megan's Megan's larger point here, right,
- 20:27Speaker 1: the AI piece of it, This is something that I'm
- 20:31Speaker 1: in real fear of. I'm not in fear of AI
- 20:33Speaker 1: taking my job. That will never happen. You know. AI
- 20:36Speaker 1: might might affect my job so that I make less
- 20:38Speaker 1: money in the future, but whatever. Uh. The piece here
- 20:42Speaker 1: that I'm afraid of is if you go on to UH,
- 20:45Speaker 1: if you go onto YouTube and you serve there some
- 20:47Speaker 1: great storytellers on YouTube, but the YouTube algorithm, and I
- 20:52Speaker 1: fear that this is going to happen with all of
- 20:54Speaker 1: the big social media content players Instagram, Meta, et cetera, TikTok,
- 20:59Speaker 1: the YouTube algori of them. Anyways, it rewards it seems
- 21:02Speaker 1: to reward neutral broad storytelling. Okay, just like mainstream network
- 21:12Speaker 1: television or mainstream blockbuster filmmaking in past years has has
- 21:18Speaker 1: favored safe, neutral storytelling because it can reach the biggest
- 21:23Speaker 1: possible audience. And that's what YouTube is interested in, creators
- 21:27Speaker 1: making content that can reach as many people as possible
- 21:30Speaker 1: and offend as few people as possible. And they have
- 21:33Speaker 1: all these safe cards in place, and I understand why
- 21:35Speaker 1: they have them, But at the same time, it's not
- 21:39Speaker 1: like they have real humans sitting back and protecting against
- 21:46Speaker 1: harmful content. This is all sort of, as I understand it,
- 21:49Speaker 1: AI protected, and it causes if you're a creator, you
- 21:55Speaker 1: don't want to be dinged. You don't want to be
- 21:57Speaker 1: you don't want to be kicked off the platform. You
- 21:59Speaker 1: don't you don't want your content and not reach people
- 22:01Speaker 1: and to be not recommended by the algorithm. So creators
- 22:05Speaker 1: are sort of forced into this lane to create very
- 22:09Speaker 1: very safe content. And as we grow, as the media
- 22:12Speaker 1: industry grows over these next few years, and the mainstream
- 22:17Speaker 1: channels of content distribution get more and more fragmented, and
- 22:21Speaker 1: creators have less and less control over how they promote
- 22:26Speaker 1: their content through other traditional means, other partners with either
- 22:31Speaker 1: studios or normal distribution channels. It's I just, I really,
- 22:37Speaker 1: really fear that we are headed toward a place where
- 22:41Speaker 1: it will almost entirely just be the safe storytelling, because
- 22:45Speaker 1: that's the only type of storytelling that the algorithms are
- 22:49Speaker 1: going to reward. And these big social media content companies,
- 22:53Speaker 1: they have everybody else boxed out. And yes, the Internet
- 22:56Speaker 1: is a great equalizer and we can all just make
- 22:59Speaker 1: whatever we want and put it out into the world. Yes,
- 23:02Speaker 1: but we are governed by how these algorithms treat our content.
- 23:06Speaker 1: So when Meghan here talks about she's happy that Disgraceland
- 23:11Speaker 1: is not just some script written by AI. Meghan, I
- 23:15Speaker 1: don't know where we're gonna be in ten years, and
- 23:17Speaker 1: something tells me that we're going to be in a very,
- 23:20Speaker 1: very tough place where there will be the sort of
- 23:23Speaker 1: top one percent of content creators who will be so
- 23:26Speaker 1: huge and He'll have audiences that are so so big
- 23:30Speaker 1: that they will be able to sort of do whatever
- 23:32Speaker 1: they want, write whatever they want. But the majority of
- 23:36Speaker 1: other content creators, the smaller ones, are going to have to,
- 23:39Speaker 1: if not use AI to write their content right in
- 23:43Speaker 1: a way that is similar to AI. And that to
- 23:46Speaker 1: me is very fucking scary. So Meghan, I don't know
- 23:49Speaker 1: you inspired this rant. Thank you hit us up, got
- 23:53Speaker 1: some merch for you. Speaking of algorithms, over on Spotify, guys,
- 23:56Speaker 1: if you're a Spotify listener, get over there. We get
- 23:58Speaker 1: a poll over there under the Aty Murphy episode. I
- 24:01Speaker 1: want to know how you believe she died. Was it
- 24:06Speaker 1: the mom theory or the dad theory? Okay, not that
- 24:08Speaker 1: the dad is theorized who have killed her? But the
- 24:11Speaker 1: dad has his own theories. I guess that's what I'm saying.
- 24:14Speaker 1: So check that out Spotify polls. Disgraceland is available everywhere
- 24:18Speaker 1: Apple Podcasts, Spotify. Leave a review really helps out. All Right,

- 25:43Speaker 1: In July twenty six, twenty twenty two, and for perhaps
- 25:47Speaker 1: the most fucked up rock star and mother of rock
- 25:50Speaker 1: star outcome you could possibly imagine, there is a Derek
- 25:53Speaker 1: in the Dominoes episode featuring a session drummer, the homicidal
- 25:58Speaker 1: Jim Gordon. This is one of my favorite episodes. I
- 26:03Speaker 1: re release it every Christmas. It's in part of Christmas theme.
