- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to May the Review be with you
- 0:02Speaker 1: with Nick and Joe.
- 0:03Speaker 2: I'm Joe. And I'm Nick. And today we are talking
- 0:06Speaker 2: about Lanterns. This is James Gunn's DC Universe's newest installment starring...
- 0:12Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, good start. Starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Of course, Kyle Chandler. I did get there. My goodness.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, of course, and Aaron Pierre
- 0:23Speaker 2: as Jon Stewart. We're two episodes in. Eight episode... Yeah,
- 0:27Speaker 2: eight episode series.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Yeah. Joe. thought so far all right so if you've
- 0:32Speaker 1: been listening to us for a while you know that
- 0:34Speaker 1: when we used to do put it on your list
- 0:36Speaker 1: i was talking about lanterns like two years ago and
- 0:39Speaker 1: i was very excited about that show then especially when
- 0:42Speaker 1: it was announced that aaron pierre was cast for this role.
- 0:50Speaker 3: About who was going to get the job of Hal Jordan,
- 0:53Speaker 3: and we.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Have an answer. It's Kyle Chandler. Kyle Chandler is Hal Jordan,
- 0:57Speaker 1: the guy from Friday Night Lights.
- 0:59Speaker 3: It's him.
- 1:01Speaker 1: He's going to don the jumpsuit, and he's going to
- 1:04Speaker 1: jump in a jet.
- 1:04Speaker 3: He's going to wear the ring. Nick, how are we feeling?
- 1:08Speaker 2: I have no idea where we're going with this. This is, like,
- 1:10Speaker 2: totally shocking to me.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I had an eyebrow raise for Kyle Chandler, but both
- 1:20Speaker 1: have been magnificent picks. They're both exactly who I want
- 1:25Speaker 1: and need them to be. I love this show, Nick.
- 1:28Speaker 1: So far, this show has been delivering for me. We're
- 1:30Speaker 1: only two episodes in, but both of those episodes, that
- 1:33Speaker 1: pilot episode especially, man, absolutely fire. If I were to
- 1:38Speaker 1: describe what Lanterns is in terms of shows or movies
- 1:41Speaker 1: that we've seen before, it feels like True Detective meets
- 1:46Speaker 1: The Men in Black. It feels like that, you know,
- 1:49Speaker 1: especially with like the mentor rookie like role that Hal
- 1:53Speaker 1: and John have in this show. It feels very like
- 1:55Speaker 1: J & K.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Yeah, this is the best show on television right now.
- 1:59Speaker 2: I am not.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Yeah. Come at us. It's like laying the gauntlet down
- 2:04Speaker 3: right here.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Like it's, it's, it's just so well done. And it's perfect.
- 2:08Speaker 2: The true detective, like men in black comparison. It's like
- 2:11Speaker 2: really a great way to explain what the show is.
- 2:14Speaker 2: And just the chemistry that these two have so far
- 2:17Speaker 2: on screen is like, it's crazy good. You, you can't like,
- 2:21Speaker 2: you can write a script. That's awesome.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:23Speaker 2: But obviously the script is great, but you still need
- 2:25Speaker 2: the actors to really gel and, And you still need
- 2:28Speaker 2: the casting to go well. And they absolutely crushed this.
- 2:31Speaker 2: It's got to be one of the best casting matchups
- 2:34Speaker 2: in so long. They're just so good on screen together.
- 2:37Speaker 2: And it's hilarious. It's like James Gunn humor. It reminds
- 2:41Speaker 2: you of Guardians of the Galaxy a little bit with
- 2:43Speaker 2: how funny this is while still kind of being serious
- 2:45Speaker 2: and building a stake.
- 2:46Speaker 3: It's fairly dark. Yeah.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Fairly dark. And we talk about like building in stakes
- 2:50Speaker 2: like on in stories like on the podcast a lot.
- 2:53Speaker 2: And like this one does a great job while still
- 2:55Speaker 2: being being funny and giving us those like laughs. And honestly,
- 2:59Speaker 2: like it's not too superhero just yet either.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Right.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Like they're just kind of like sprinkling in. like some
- 3:06Speaker 2: use of the ring, and some like training for Jon Stewart.
- 3:10Speaker 2: But like, it's really more like you kind of said, like,
- 3:12Speaker 2: it's more of like a true detective story right now, right? Like,
- 3:14Speaker 2: which I think is what they were going for anyway.
- 3:16Speaker 2: But it's really cool to see him actually stick to
- 3:18Speaker 2: it so far in the first episodes.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Yeah, completely agreed.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I am curious if we will retain that feeling kind
- 3:25Speaker 1: of hope even like as a superhero fan, I kind
- 3:27Speaker 1: of hope that we do retain this feeling that like,
- 3:29Speaker 1: We have this superhero show in a world that doesn't
- 3:32Speaker 1: feel very superhero-y. I don't know if we're going to
- 3:35Speaker 1: be able to keep that with the end of episode
- 3:38Speaker 1: two before we get into spoiler territory, where I'm just
- 3:41Speaker 1: letting you know right now, if you haven't seen it yet,
- 3:44Speaker 1: fair warning, get out now. Go watch it because we
- 3:48Speaker 1: will be talking about spoilers here today. Nick, I have
- 3:51Speaker 1: so many questions just coming out of the first episode.
- 3:54Speaker 3: So many.
- 3:55Speaker 1: And I, the first one I want to run by you,
- 3:58Speaker 1: is what was up with the hologram? Which, by the way,
- 4:02Speaker 1: love the pun. It almost feels like the mystery of
- 4:05Speaker 1: everything is kind of kicked off very, very fast in
- 4:07Speaker 1: the first episode after Hal is who is training Jon,
- 4:11Speaker 1: which why is Hal training Jon?
- 4:13Speaker 3: We don't know. There is a question. We don't know.
- 4:15Speaker 1: There's never been a Green Lantern that's trained another Green
- 4:18Speaker 1: Lantern or like a mentor and someone to carry on
- 4:21Speaker 1: the torch sort of relationship, at least in this universe, right?
- 4:24Speaker 1: So I don't know why that's happened. When John is
- 4:26Speaker 1: alone with the ring, the hologram appears. Hal from 10
- 4:29Speaker 1: years back, letting John know to tell current Hal that
- 4:34Speaker 1: there is a hail in Rushville, which, of course, Hal,
- 4:38Speaker 1: as soon as he learns this message, runs to Rushville, which,
- 4:41Speaker 1: of course, is where our mystery and our stakes are
- 4:44Speaker 1: taking place. This is the moment where we find out
- 4:46Speaker 1: four aliens, well, four people at first, we hear are shot,
- 4:50Speaker 1: and there's a homicide investigation, and it's later revealed that
- 4:52Speaker 1: these are aliens. Yeah.
- 4:56Speaker 3: It's a hell of a setup.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Hell of a setup. Hell of a start too, right?
- 4:59Speaker 2: We get to see Jon Stewart wear the ring for
- 5:01Speaker 2: the first time in that opening sequence, right? Where Hal's
- 5:05Speaker 2: testing him, crashes the car, leaves the ring. Here's your
- 5:09Speaker 2: first test with the ring, buddy. So we're getting some
- 5:13Speaker 2: really fun moments there.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Actually, before you move on from that, that's another question too.
- 5:18Speaker 1: What's up with Jon's dad? Jon's dad briefly makes... So
- 5:22Speaker 1: we see Jon's dad and Jon... Well, not John, but
- 5:24Speaker 1: his siblings appear to be very afraid of John's dad.
- 5:28Speaker 1: John obviously has no fear. They do a little bit
- 5:31Speaker 1: of William Tell where John's dad shoots with a gun
- 5:36Speaker 1: an apple off of John's head and he shows no
- 5:38Speaker 1: fear and John's dad appears to be very proud of him.
- 5:41Speaker 2: I have a feeling that John's dad is so high
- 5:42Speaker 2: up in the military that he's been grooming his son
- 5:46Speaker 2: for this role specifically and he's probably part of the
- 5:48Speaker 2: reason he even has this role.
- 5:50Speaker 3: It kind of feels like that. It feels like that.
- 5:52Speaker 3: It feels like that.
- 5:53Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Some, some kind of organization has been grooming John for
- 5:58Speaker 1: this at some point.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Right. Military agreement with the guardians.
- 6:03Speaker 1: I don't know. Right.
- 6:04Speaker 2: But then based on the end of episode two, again, spoilers,
- 6:07Speaker 2: the way that Sinestro kind of words, this last question to,
- 6:10Speaker 2: to how, or not question, but the statement, right. About like,
- 6:13Speaker 2: if there is a man hunter is the second biggest
- 6:15Speaker 2: problem or biggest, like worry for you on earth. And
- 6:19Speaker 2: then he asks about Jon Stewart, which implies that Jon
- 6:22Speaker 2: Stewart is the biggest worry that Hal Jordan should have
- 6:25Speaker 2: about people on Earth. So this kind of goes back
- 6:28Speaker 2: to what you were just saying. It's like, who put
- 6:29Speaker 2: Jon Stewart in place? And do we actually have to
- 6:31Speaker 2: worry about him or not? And within this universe, right?
- 6:35Speaker 2: Very interesting.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I'm so glad you brought that up because I remember
- 6:38Speaker 1: I wasn't sure. And it's purposely kind of ambiguous when
- 6:41Speaker 1: Sinestro says this, right? And I wasn't sure if he
- 6:45Speaker 1: was saying that because like he knows Jon, that there's
- 6:48Speaker 1: something like more to John and like, it does appear
- 6:51Speaker 1: that there is something more to John. Right. And I'll
- 6:53Speaker 1: get into why in a second, is there something more
- 6:56Speaker 1: to John or is he trying to get under house
- 6:58Speaker 1: skin here?
- 6:59Speaker 3: Right.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Because like the only thing you have to be more
- 7:02Speaker 1: worried about is John, who's going to replace you. Right.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Like that's a good point.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. You're a, you're a man who's running out
- 7:07Speaker 1: of time.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Hal Jordan. Right.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Like it almost feels like that's maybe what he's doing
- 7:12Speaker 1: unless you're right. Unless like there is something going on
- 7:14Speaker 1: with John. Cause John is, creates a construct that kind
- 7:17Speaker 1: of baffles everybody it's literal life he creates a bird
- 7:22Speaker 1: yeah and everyone who like understands the lore of like
- 7:25Speaker 1: the lantern in this universe is like blown away by
- 7:28Speaker 1: the fact that he's done this yeah.
- 7:29Speaker 2: And it's really cool how the show did this for
- 7:32Speaker 2: us too right like he does this and how jordan
- 7:34Speaker 2: has like a reaction that's kind of it's really just
- 7:37Speaker 2: his mannerisms that he reacts with it's not really his
- 7:39Speaker 2: words and in that initial scene you're kind of like
- 7:42Speaker 2: whom i wonder what how's kind of thinking because he's
- 7:44Speaker 2: kind of It looks like he's contemplating something else in
- 7:47Speaker 2: his head without telling John. And then we find out
- 7:49Speaker 2: from the people, the aliens that are hunting the Manhunter,
- 7:52Speaker 2: that like this is actually like a really hard thing
- 7:55Speaker 2: for anyone to do. And it really advanced basically for Lantern.
- 7:59Speaker 2: And he's not even doing it with the ring near him.
- 8:01Speaker 2: And so it was really cool how they kind of
- 8:02Speaker 2: gave us those two scenes and that kind of reveal
- 8:05Speaker 2: for John Stewart understanding. He's like, oh, wow, maybe I
- 8:07Speaker 2: can do this because I've done this. That's like apparently
- 8:10Speaker 2: really difficult. And I didn't even get a hoorah. It's
- 8:13Speaker 2: like such such great way to present that information. And
- 8:17Speaker 2: the other thing that I thought was really cool about
- 8:20Speaker 2: how we know so far hasn't been so superhero-y, if
- 8:23Speaker 2: you will. And I know you mentioned that we finally
- 8:25Speaker 2: get to see the suit at the end of the
- 8:26Speaker 2: second episode. But and you're going to have to, you know,
- 8:30Speaker 2: give me some ideas here because off the top of
- 8:32Speaker 2: my head, I can't think of any, I can't think
- 8:33Speaker 2: of the last time that we had a superhero suit
- 8:36Speaker 2: reveal that was so laid back and nonchalant and like, honestly,
- 8:40Speaker 2: not even like specifically made important on screen.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:43Speaker 2: This cause that's the first time we see how put
- 8:45Speaker 2: on the suit and the, at the end of the
- 8:47Speaker 2: second episode. And it was like the most throwaway, like,
- 8:50Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I have to put this on only because
- 8:52Speaker 2: I have to go to the prison in space or
- 8:54Speaker 2: wherever this is to talk to Sinestro.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I think I disagree.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Yeah. with you i mean like i get what you're
- 9:00Speaker 1: going for because like usually like in movies and shows
- 9:04Speaker 1: like when there's when there's something when when the superhero
- 9:07Speaker 1: suit gets put on it's usually like in this epic
- 9:10Speaker 1: moment right.
- 9:10Speaker 2: The first time you know there's like a bigger build-up
- 9:14Speaker 2: of like man this was awesome like they built.
- 9:16Speaker 4: It up but they built it up in like a
- 9:18Speaker 4: it's not important way I think that's where I disagree
- 9:21Speaker 4: because like I in the first episode when Hal is
- 9:25Speaker 4: getting tacos, somebody asks, like, why don't you wear it anymore?
- 9:28Speaker 1: And he responds like, I wear it on special occasion.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Right.
- 9:33Speaker 1: So I think maybe maybe he does have to like
- 9:36Speaker 1: in like when he goes to prison or when he
- 9:38Speaker 1: goes to like the Guardians world, he has to be
- 9:39Speaker 1: in uniform.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Right.
- 9:40Speaker 3: He's a big cop. He's got to be in uniform.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Got to wear the tie.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:43Speaker 3: But maybe like that very like subtle, like are subtle.
- 9:48Speaker 1: That laid back approach of putting on the suit and
- 9:50Speaker 1: coupled with the fact that, you know, he says, I
- 9:52Speaker 1: only put it on special, put it on special occasion,
- 9:55Speaker 1: him going to like Sinestro, like he needs to put
- 9:58Speaker 1: on the suit because he needs to like, be seen
- 10:01Speaker 1: as the Green Lantern now. Like, he can't be seen
- 10:03Speaker 1: as just Hal. He's got to be seen as Green
- 10:06Speaker 1: Lantern of Earth because, like, this is, like, I presume
- 10:08Speaker 1: if this is, like, the Sinestro that we are at least, like,
- 10:11Speaker 1: fairly familiar with, like, in our world, right? That this
- 10:15Speaker 1: is a mortal enemy of Hal. It doesn't look like Sinestro...
- 10:19Speaker 1: Has gotten a yellow ring yet? That might not be
- 10:21Speaker 1: a thing yet in this show. Although I will say,
- 10:24Speaker 1: I think it's very fun that this show is called Lanterns, right? Lanterns, plural.
- 10:30Speaker 1: And so far, two episodes in, we've only known one,
- 10:33Speaker 1: to my knowledge, right? We've only known one ring, one lantern.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I'm not counting Sinestro anymore since he's in prison.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Feels like he's been stripped of that status. So when
- 10:44Speaker 1: does another lantern show up? I don't know.
- 10:48Speaker 3: I mean, Sinestro could be someone else.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Or are Stuart and Jordan just going to be tossing
- 10:53Speaker 2: the ring back and forth so they're both lanterns at
- 10:55Speaker 2: different times?
- 10:56Speaker 3: Maybe. Maybe.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Oh, I will say, okay, so episode one hits us
- 11:02Speaker 1: with three different points in time, which, man, so true detective-y.
- 11:07Speaker 3: I love that, right?
- 11:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Breaking up the mystery over spans of years. John starts
- 11:14Speaker 1: out being mysterious, right? We don't really know what's going
- 11:16Speaker 1: on with John and John Sr. And at the end,
- 11:18Speaker 1: it's revealed that 10 years after the plot is taking place,
- 11:22Speaker 1: so the plot's taking place 2016, right? These years are
- 11:25Speaker 1: so important, not just for this show, but for the
- 11:27Speaker 1: greater James Gunn DC universe. I'll get to why in
- 11:30Speaker 1: a second. It's revealed that in 2026, Hal is dead, right?
- 11:34Speaker 1: And he seems to be freshly dead. And then John
- 11:37Speaker 1: goes to look for the ring. and the ring's missing, right?
- 11:39Speaker 1: So it is implied here that someone has taken the ring.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Has someone taken John, or not John's ring, sorry. Has
- 11:45Speaker 1: someone taken Hal's ring? Or is this the introduction of
- 11:48Speaker 1: Guy Gardner, who we saw in Superman? Superman, I made
- 11:51Speaker 1: sure to look this up. Superman takes place in.
- 11:53Speaker 3: 2025, right?
- 11:55Speaker 1: So Guy should already have his ring and be a
- 12:00Speaker 1: lantern on Earth by the time Hal dies. So this
- 12:02Speaker 1: to me says there are two Green Lanterns, at least
- 12:05Speaker 1: two Green Lanterns on Earth at least for some year or, like,
- 12:10Speaker 1: months and change time before Hal dies, right? So I
- 12:14Speaker 1: think that takes Guy off the table of taking Hal's ring.
- 12:17Speaker 2: But in the lore, does Guy specifically take Hal's ring?
- 12:20Speaker 3: Oh, God.
- 12:21Speaker 1: All right, so, like, it really depends on what you're
- 12:23Speaker 1: looking at. Because, like, there are certain points where there
- 12:27Speaker 1: are multiple Green Lanterns at the same time like john
- 12:31Speaker 1: hal and guy have all existed at the same time
- 12:34Speaker 1: but like in in order i mean like yeah john
- 12:37Speaker 1: comes next i actually think kyle rayner comes after john
- 12:40Speaker 1: and then it's guy i might be wrong on that
- 12:43Speaker 1: maybe it's kyle rayner uh um but.
- 12:47Speaker 2: That's so interesting for just the james gunning dc universe
- 12:50Speaker 2: like and how they're going to set all this up
- 12:52Speaker 2: because we've already had like you said the guy gardner
- 12:54Speaker 2: introduction in superman so god so interesting and I freaking
- 12:59Speaker 2: love him Aaron Pierre this dude is like this dude
- 13:02Speaker 2: is awesome he's he's an incredible actor I I hope
- 13:06Speaker 2: that we get to see a ton more of him
- 13:08Speaker 2: like in this show and in future DC stuff because
- 13:10Speaker 2: like he's he's a baller he's freaking awesome.
- 13:14Speaker 1: You know, if you enjoy him a lot, I have
- 13:16Speaker 1: something that you should put on your list.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Don't say it.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Don't say Rebel Ridge.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Rebel Ridge, which is a fantastic movie starring Aaron Pierre.
- 13:25Speaker 3: It is a great movie and a.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Great time and something I've been recommending for like two
- 13:29Speaker 1: freaking years now.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Yeah, Joe has been recommending it for a while. I'm
- 13:32Speaker 2: going to actually have to watch it now because Aaron
- 13:35Speaker 2: Pierre has skills.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Bro, you're going to start the movie.
- 13:39Speaker 1: You're going to start Rebel Ridge and you're going to
- 13:41Speaker 1: be like 120 seconds into it and you're going to
- 13:43Speaker 1: text me and you'll be like, I can't rip my
- 13:45Speaker 1: eyes away from this.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Like, it is that intense.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm going to text you and be like, how
- 13:48Speaker 2: come you didn't tell me about this movie sooner?
- 13:50Speaker 3: That will really test our friendship.
- 13:52Speaker 1: That will really do it, Nick.
- 13:54Speaker 3: That will really do it.
- 13:55Speaker 2: That's not even close.
- 13:56Speaker 3: I got more. Yeah, that's true. That's true.
- 13:59Speaker 1: You know, as far as our friendship goes, I'm surprised
- 14:01Speaker 1: this hasn't come up yet.
- 14:02Speaker 3: So, Nick and I, we are.
- 14:05Speaker 1: For better or for worse, very big fans of the
- 14:08Speaker 1: ABC hit television drama Lost. And there is a very
- 14:13Speaker 1: familiar name in the writing credits of this show, Damon Lindloff,
- 14:17Speaker 1: who famously co-wrote Lost. I felt a little nervous, actually,
- 14:21Speaker 1: when I saw his name. Not that I think he's
- 14:23Speaker 1: a bad writer or anything. I think Damon is a
- 14:26Speaker 1: talented writer. But Lost was such an interesting rollercoaster experience.
- 14:29Speaker 3: I love Lost. I really do. Do I think Lost
- 14:31Speaker 3: is a perfect show? Absolutely not.
- 14:34Speaker 1: So that did give me a little bit of concern here. However,
- 14:38Speaker 1: after the first episode, I think my concerns have really
- 14:40Speaker 1: been removed. It really feels like we're moving in a
- 14:42Speaker 1: direction that feels very planned, very methodically planned, right?
- 14:46Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely methodically planned. So let's talk highlights real quick.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Sure.
- 14:51Speaker 2: We have to talk about the interrogation scene in episode one.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a big standout. So yeah, they've arrested the
- 14:58Speaker 1: only suspect in... the shooting at the football field and
- 15:02Speaker 1: they suspect that Waylon is an alien. And the scene
- 15:06Speaker 1: is how trying to get Waylon to admit that he
- 15:09Speaker 1: is in fact. Yeah.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Yeah. And the, and the concept here is that aliens
- 15:13Speaker 2: are only like taught to remember like specific things. They're,
- 15:16Speaker 2: they're not taught like history of like humans. Like they
- 15:20Speaker 2: wouldn't know something that all humans know. They would just
- 15:22Speaker 2: know what they were specifically told to know.
- 15:24Speaker 4: Right.
- 15:24Speaker 1: So like the human that he's replacing, like everything that
- 15:27Speaker 1: that human would probably know.
- 15:28Speaker 2: But not like general human knowledge. Like, and then how
- 15:31Speaker 2: Jordan uses the whole, you know, where did Harry Potter
- 15:34Speaker 2: go to school? And this guy's like, no idea. And then,
- 15:37Speaker 2: He goes on a tangent and lists, like, famous people's
- 15:39Speaker 2: names and gets to Barack Obama. And he's like, oh,
- 15:41Speaker 2: Barack Obama. And gives you, like, a robotic 44th president
- 15:44Speaker 2: of the United States. There's some issues around his birth certificate. Like,
- 15:47Speaker 2: some robotic answer that is just, like, proves. And then
- 15:50Speaker 2: the whole... Everyone in the watching is just like, holy shit,
- 15:53Speaker 2: he is an alien.
- 15:54Speaker 4: Right.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Such an awesome scene.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Because, like, this guy from Rushville, Nebraska, population 800, has, like,
- 16:03Speaker 1: a very, like... targeted answer about barack obama that's not
- 16:07Speaker 1: negative and like in the slightest they're like absolutely not
- 16:09Speaker 1: we don't believe it anymore like that guy's an alien.
- 16:12Speaker 2: It's hilarious but and also like and what the show
- 16:15Speaker 2: does really well is that you know they set up
- 16:18Speaker 2: how aliens are are like taught human knowledge in that
- 16:21Speaker 2: scene and then in the next episode when stewart gets
- 16:25Speaker 2: kidnapped by the aliens hunting who are looking for the
- 16:28Speaker 2: manhunter the aliens are interrogating him kind of right they're
- 16:31Speaker 2: asking him some questions trying to figure out what he
- 16:32Speaker 2: knows And they use a couple words and phrases that
- 16:36Speaker 2: are not quite correct for what they want to mean
- 16:40Speaker 2: in their sentences. And that is a dead giveaway for
- 16:44Speaker 2: Stuart to be like, I see that human language is
- 16:48Speaker 2: not your first language. And so he kind of learns
- 16:51Speaker 2: from that first interrogation, like, okay, I know what I
- 16:53Speaker 2: need to be listening for. And he figures it out
- 16:55Speaker 2: pretty quick that he's not dealing with just like regular
- 16:59Speaker 2: humans kidnapping him. He's dealing with a different species who
- 17:02Speaker 2: have just taken taking the human bodies basically.
- 17:05Speaker 3: I mean, you're so right.
- 17:07Speaker 1: And like, that's not just like the writers, like teaching
- 17:09Speaker 1: us about like how, how aliens are infiltrating earth and
- 17:13Speaker 1: like what tactics they take, but also it's showing us
- 17:15Speaker 1: like how, how smart and like how observational John is.
- 17:20Speaker 4: Right.
- 17:21Speaker 1: And like, we keep seeing that consistently, like you point out,
- 17:23Speaker 1: like right there, like he, you know, he's able to
- 17:25Speaker 1: zero in on what it is that they're saying. He's
- 17:27Speaker 1: able to deduce fairly fast, but these are probably the
- 17:30Speaker 1: same people who are connected with Wayland. And the episode before,
- 17:33Speaker 1: when they're at the football field, before it's really introduced
- 17:37Speaker 1: that the people shot were aliens, Hal asks John what
- 17:40Speaker 1: he thinks happened at the field. And very NCIS, John
- 17:46Speaker 1: very quickly, just looking at the scene after it happened,
- 17:50Speaker 1: posits this theory about how you know, there was this
- 17:55Speaker 1: rush out onto the field. That's why the fence collapsed.
- 17:57Speaker 1: And knowing that it's Nebraska, there are a couple of
- 17:59Speaker 1: like Nebraskans who are probably strapped and like, you know,
- 18:02Speaker 1: it felt so much like that scene in Men in
- 18:05Speaker 1: Black when Jay shoots the sign or like the picture
- 18:09Speaker 1: of the little girl with the atomic physics book.
- 18:13Speaker 3: And they're like, why did you do that?
- 18:15Speaker 1: And like, he like, you know, he lists all these
- 18:18Speaker 1: reasons as to why he didn't shoot any of like
- 18:19Speaker 1: the clear monsters and why he only shot the little girl, right?
- 18:23Speaker 1: I felt very like on brand for that. Like they
- 18:25Speaker 1: both have like that kind of analytical thinking.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Very smart. And they give that to us. They set
- 18:31Speaker 2: that up well, well for him. What are any other,
- 18:34Speaker 2: what else stands out to you?
- 18:35Speaker 1: I mean, like I said, man, like I'm just, I'm
- 18:37Speaker 1: filled with questions. Obviously the big one at the end
- 18:39Speaker 1: of episode one, our episode two is who is the Manhunter?
- 18:43Speaker 1: And I mean, the obvious answer feels like, so we're
- 18:46Speaker 1: introduced in episode one to Will Macken, who is, taking
- 18:52Speaker 1: care of this ranch, right? And he's a very shady guy.
- 18:57Speaker 1: The whole family's shady. His wife is shady. His 10-year-old
- 19:00Speaker 1: son is shady. Everyone in this family is shady. And
- 19:03Speaker 1: they have technology that they shouldn't have. There is also
- 19:07Speaker 1: an employer who owns the ranch that Will is taking
- 19:10Speaker 1: care of the ranch for, right? So the obvious answer
- 19:14Speaker 1: feels like, okay, it's probably the ranch owner.
- 19:17Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 19:17Speaker 1: There's something, there's something weird about Zoe. Zoe Mack on
- 19:20Speaker 1: the wife. There's something super strange about her. Yeah.
- 19:23Speaker 2: I was just going to say like, she, she gives
- 19:25Speaker 2: me the vibe that like, she might be, she might
- 19:28Speaker 2: be the, maybe she's the Manhunter, which makes it even
- 19:30Speaker 2: more hilarious that Stuart slept with her. That is the case. No,
- 19:34Speaker 2: that would have some insane implications.
- 19:36Speaker 3: So I did not consider that.
- 19:37Speaker 2: No one said the Manhunter had to be a man, right?
- 19:42Speaker 2: I mean, it could be a female alien. Like, why
- 19:44Speaker 2: does it have to be a man?
- 19:45Speaker 3: Red herring. purpose, purposeful red herring could be her.
- 19:48Speaker 1: And you know what? She slayed a man already. She
- 19:50Speaker 1: already slayed John. So like man Hunter, boom, we got it.
- 19:54Speaker 1: We done.
- 19:55Speaker 3: See, we done. It's so figured it out.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Speaking of the women in the show, though, Carrie, the sheriff, Carrie.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Love this little slide in detail in episode two that
- 20:06Speaker 2: she's originally from Gotham city.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Yeah, that was cool.
- 20:09Speaker 2: I was like, all right, that's cool. Let's get some
- 20:12Speaker 2: Gotham going in James Gunn's DC Universe, huh?
- 20:15Speaker 3: Actually, yeah, you're right. Is that the first Gotham mention
- 20:17Speaker 3: we've gotten?
- 20:18Speaker 2: In his universe, I think so.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Yeah, right before Clayface comes out, too. Yeah, I think
- 20:22Speaker 1: that's our first Gotham. Maybe there was a televised news
- 20:26Speaker 1: segment in Superman.
- 20:27Speaker 3: I don't know. Probably.
- 20:28Speaker 1: But at least this is the first character, named character,
- 20:32Speaker 1: who has said it.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I mean, and then the Penguin stuff, too.
- 20:36Speaker 3: Is that James Gunn canon?
- 20:38Speaker 2: I thought it was. But it might not be because
- 20:41Speaker 2: they're not renewing it, unfortunately. So maybe it's not.
- 20:43Speaker 3: It might not be.
- 20:44Speaker 2: It might have been.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Wait, no, you know what?
- 20:46Speaker 1: Okay, so maybe... Okay, so it's not what it is.
- 20:51Speaker 1: It's not the same universe as Superman. It's the same
- 20:53Speaker 1: universe as.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Matt Reeves' Batman.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Yes, yes, exactly.
- 20:57Speaker 2: So it's technically that universe. So then never mind. We
- 21:01Speaker 2: can ignore that.
- 21:02Speaker 3: Nice, nice. This was a fun little tangent we went on.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Yeah, even on this podcast where we talk about all the...
- 21:07Speaker 2: comic book stuff we forget what the hell's happening with
- 21:10Speaker 2: Batman because there's so many Batmans now anyway Batman if
- 21:14Speaker 2: you will Batman okay cool what anything you didn't like
- 21:17Speaker 2: before we get to time here or any other final thoughts.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I feel like there's more to Hal's story about Abin
- 21:25Speaker 1: Sur right giving him the ring there's like way more
- 21:27Speaker 1: to it and I'm curious if because this would be
- 21:30Speaker 1: such a James Gunn thing to do the the joke
- 21:33Speaker 1: at the end where he's like I wasn't quite sure
- 21:36Speaker 1: if his last words were good luck or f word
- 21:39Speaker 1: right which very funny right but i wonder if that
- 21:43Speaker 1: is supposed to draw attention to like what the last
- 21:45Speaker 1: words actually were and if if he misheard them right
- 21:48Speaker 1: and if that story happens the way that he says
- 21:51Speaker 1: it does uh which john says that hal is fearless
- 21:55Speaker 1: but carrie says yeah maybe but he's lonely like that's
- 21:59Speaker 1: different right And that's that's an interesting distinction that they're making,
- 22:03Speaker 1: because Hal says he's fearless because he doesn't he he
- 22:07Speaker 1: lost his parents.
- 22:07Speaker 4: Right.
- 22:08Speaker 1: And that's where we come full circle with like this
- 22:10Speaker 1: lonely idea. And a few characters bring up the fact
- 22:13Speaker 1: that John probably wants to die, but also he doesn't
- 22:16Speaker 1: want to give up his job.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Very conflicting information. Not sure where that's going.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Very conflicting. Very conflicting.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:22Speaker 2: As for me, I don't have anything that I really
- 22:24Speaker 2: don't like yet about the show. I really like it's
- 22:26Speaker 2: it's really just all gas right now.
- 22:29Speaker 3: And I'm dialed in.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:32Speaker 3: Yeah, like you said, the humor is pretty spot on.
- 22:36Speaker 2: It's actually super rewatchable, too. I rewatched both episodes for this,
- 22:41Speaker 2: but I was excited to do it because the humor
- 22:44Speaker 2: hits even the second time. It's so well done. Go
- 22:49Speaker 2: watch it if you haven't yet.
- 22:49Speaker 1: The Harry Potter and Hogwarts line that Hal mentioned, on paper,
- 22:53Speaker 1: I feel like that's not very funny.
- 22:55Speaker 3: But Kyle Chandler... is funny.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Like, he's hilarious. Even when he's just being, like, gruff, right?
- 23:02Speaker 1: The two dudes are just, like, dripping with charisma, man.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Just dripping with it.
- 23:07Speaker 3: It's crazy.
- 23:08Speaker 2: They have great delivery. Absolutely.
- 23:11Speaker 1: I'm very excited for more. This show, like you said,
- 23:13Speaker 1: is really hitting on all cylinders. So, I guess just
- 23:17Speaker 1: as a quick, like, recap it, we're calling Zoe to
- 23:20Speaker 1: be the Manhunter right now?
- 23:21Speaker 3: Is that our call? Is that our declaration?
- 23:23Speaker 2: So far.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Okay. I like it. There's something weird about her. So, yeah,
- 23:28Speaker 3: let's say it's that.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Let's say she's a Manhunter. Let us know if you
