- 0:00Hello, everyone. This is Jacob Emerson with the
- 0:02Becker's Pay Your Issues podcast.
- 0:04Thrilled today to be joined by Mike Jasperson,
- 0:06who is the senior vice president of provider
- 0:08network and health plan operations
- 0:11at Priority Health. Mike, thanks so much for
- 0:13taking the time to be with me on
- 0:14the podcast today.
- 0:16Glad to join you. Thanks for having me.
- 0:18So, Mike, before we dive into everything we
- 0:20wanna talk with you about, can you tell
- 0:21us a little bit more about yourself, your
- 0:24background in the world of healthcare, and what
- 0:26it is that you're doing today at Priority
- 0:30Health. Sure.
- 0:31So I've been in, health care for the
- 0:33past,
- 0:3425 years. I've had,
- 0:37some stints on the delivery side, so working
- 0:39for some large,
- 0:41health systems.
- 0:43I've also worked in the post acute,
- 0:45space in hospice and palliative care, and I've
- 0:48spent,
- 0:49a great I I suppose the majority of
- 0:51my career in health insurance,
- 0:54working for a large, Blues plan as well
- 0:56as my current role at Priority Health. And
- 0:59so I'm the senior vice president of our
- 1:02provider network and health plan,
- 1:04operations for Priority Health. We're a large,
- 1:07provider sponsored or provider owned health plan
- 1:11operating,
- 1:12in the state of Michigan and, actually, most
- 1:15recently outside the state of Michigan in expanding
- 1:18into Indiana
- 1:19and Ohio as well.
- 1:21My responsibilities
- 1:22include, provider network development management,
- 1:26value based health care.
- 1:28I'm responsible for member and provider services,
- 1:31claims, and other key operational areas of the
- 1:34organization.
- 1:35And I'm responsible for advancing, you know, automation,
- 1:38AI,
- 1:39quality and training within the operations and and
- 1:42also planning for future business operational,
- 1:45architectural and application needs.
- 1:49Fantastic.
- 1:49So, Mike, let's talk about Priority Health as
- 1:52you know, being a pioneer within value based
- 1:55care since the late nineties.
- 1:57As I understand that the company has saved
- 1:59over
- 2:00$100,000,000 through alternative payment methods between
- 2:032019 and 2022
- 2:05alone.
- 2:06So what do you attribute these successes to?
- 2:08And, ultimately, how have the approaches or the
- 2:11company's strategies evolved over time to stay at
- 2:15the forefront of what is a rapidly evolving
- 2:17value based ecosystem?
- 2:19Oh, great great question. And it's obviously something
- 2:22that we're really, really proud of. We've been
- 2:24doing value based care, as you mentioned, for
- 2:26a long, long time.
- 2:27So our success in value based care really
- 2:29stems from
- 2:31our early adoption
- 2:32and continuous evolution of alternative payment models or
- 2:36so called APMs.
- 2:38So today, over 50% of our members are
- 2:41cared for by providers who are
- 2:44what we would call an advanced value based,
- 2:47arrangements with us.
- 2:48So over the years, we've developed a robust
- 2:51framework that really supports providers in delivering high
- 2:54quality
- 2:55cost effective care.
- 2:57And key to that,
- 2:59to success in that is collaborative partnerships. So
- 3:02we work really, really closely
- 3:04with our provider partners to align on goals,
- 3:06to share resources,
- 3:08and providing advanced technical and analytical support, and
- 3:11really having teams that engaged,
- 3:14to ensure the success
- 3:16and collaboration
- 3:17together.
- 3:18We have
- 3:19strategic partnerships with
- 3:21independent physician organizations.
- 3:24We have them with integrated, you know, large
- 3:26integrated delivery systems as well, such as our
- 3:29own,
- 3:30parent organization, Corwell Health, which really allows us
- 3:33to implement comprehensive care models that focus
- 3:36on the whole patient.
- 3:38For example,
- 3:39in 2020,
- 3:40Priority Health and CoreWell Health
- 3:42began a full risk contract together,
- 3:45which resulted in positive results for both members
- 3:49and providers,
- 3:50including,
- 3:51over $45,000,000
- 3:53saved due to optimized
- 3:55patient care.
- 3:56So
- 3:58these savings really come from members health, being
- 4:01managed through coordinated primary care
- 4:04and getting their health concerns addressed early
- 4:06as well as when chronic conditions are managed
- 4:09and visits to high cost facilities,
- 4:12ER visits, inpatient stays are avoided.
- 4:15So these savings mean
- 4:17premiums and costs for our members and employers
- 4:19are be able are able to be kept
- 4:21down because of that collaborative
- 4:24partnership.
- 4:25It's really important that we also drive,
- 4:28data driven decision making. So
- 4:30we use an, APM readiness assessment to help
- 4:34us partner with providers who are ready
- 4:36to really tackle value based care. And our
- 4:39analysis enable providers to identify opportunities, you know,
- 4:42really clear opportunities for improvement
- 4:44and to track performance metrics over time.
- 4:47We also offer
- 4:49significant flexibility in our models,
- 4:51offering multiple levels of risk to kinda meet
- 4:54the provider where they're at, from a value
- 4:56based, perspective,
- 4:58from no risk or limited risk to, you
- 5:01know, the spectrum across the spectrum to full
- 5:03risk, allowing providers to engage at a comfortable
- 5:07pace while progressively taking on more and more
- 5:10responsibility
- 5:11over time as their capabilities evolve.
- 5:14Wow. So clearly
- 5:16a lot of savings
- 5:17generated by working more closely with your your
- 5:20parent health system, Mike. And I and to
- 5:22follow-up with you on that, how would you
- 5:24say that Priority Health is is further shaping
- 5:27its programs,
- 5:28its products
- 5:29to better address evolving patient needs and community
- 5:33health across,
- 5:34your market and and the landscape that you're
- 5:37seeing.
- 5:37Yep.
- 5:39So today's health care landscape
- 5:42requires us to be more adaptive and responsive
- 5:44really than ever, before.
- 5:47So we're continuously
- 5:48refining,
- 5:49programs to meet the evolving needs of patients
- 5:52and communities through,
- 5:54many initiatives.
- 5:55Some,
- 5:56clear examples
- 5:58include, you know, patient centric approaches. So our
- 6:01APM support a holistic treatment model that considers
- 6:05not only quality and cost of care, but
- 6:07social determinants of health as well, which we
- 6:09know have a profound impact
- 6:11on outcomes and health care costs as well.
- 6:14We're ensuring
- 6:16enhanced patient care coordination.
- 6:18So we focus on improving care coordination across
- 6:21primary care, specialty care,
- 6:23post acute care,
- 6:25which really enhances patient outcomes and reduces costs
- 6:29overall.
- 6:30Advanced primary care clinics is one example of
- 6:33something that we've taken on in partnership with
- 6:35Corwell Health and with other partners as well.
- 6:37So these are specifically designed clinics for Medicare
- 6:41members
- 6:41with chronic diseases.
- 6:43These clinics provide longer appointment times,
- 6:46comprehensive care planning
- 6:48to address the holistic needs of of Medicare
- 6:51beneficiaries with significant,
- 6:53health
- 6:54needs. Community engagement is important as well. So
- 6:57programs like,
- 6:59a community medicine clinic for Medicaid beneficiaries
- 7:02address specific health care needs and barriers as
- 7:04well
- 7:05and, offer tailored support to our multidisciplinary
- 7:09team,
- 7:09managing that patient in a holistic way. And
- 7:12then, of course, innovative tools are important
- 7:15to drive, those outcomes. So by way of
- 7:17example,
- 7:19we have a partnership with an with, Epic
- 7:22and the Epic pair platform,
- 7:24and we use also other data sharing tools
- 7:27as well to help more easily exchange data
- 7:29with providers while improving care coordination
- 7:33and also reducing administrative burdens, on on busy
- 7:36practices as well.
- 7:38Interesting. Interesting. And I I wanna ask you
- 7:41a little bit about your provider partnerships,
- 7:43outside
- 7:44the CoreWell umbrella.
- 7:46As priority continues to expand its value based
- 7:50initiatives,
- 7:50what are some of the key challenges, Mike,
- 7:52that you foresee both operationally,
- 7:55and within your provider relationships
- 7:57to meet the growing demand
- 8:00for, what patients are demanding in terms of
- 8:02more personalized and more efficient
- 8:04health care? Yep. So some of the challenges
- 8:07are are operational, you know, as we scale
- 8:10our programs and seek to maintain quality and
- 8:13efficiency.
- 8:14So So it really does require a robust
- 8:16infrastructure and continuous innovation and care,
- 8:19delivery models. We do have to meet these
- 8:21organizations where they're at as well in terms
- 8:24of their own evolution. So not
- 8:27every partnership is
- 8:27built the same way, so we have to
- 8:29offer that,
- 8:30flexibility.
- 8:32Another challenge is is provider interest. So
- 8:35this is also an opportunity to really educate
- 8:37providers about,
- 8:39APMs and ensure that they have access to
- 8:41tools and resources to help them be,
- 8:44successful.
- 8:46Technology
- 8:46integration is another challenge, you know, leveraging
- 8:49advanced data analytics and AI to predict patient
- 8:53needs and to streamline care coordination.
- 8:56I had mentioned already community partnerships. So I
- 8:58continue to expand collaborations with
- 9:01local organizations
- 9:02to address social determinants of health and the
- 9:05disparate needs
- 9:06of these patients and and our members to
- 9:08treat them holistically.
- 9:10And then, of course, policy advocacy. So
- 9:13working with policymakers
- 9:14to support value based care frameworks and to
- 9:17incentivize
- 9:18incentivize providers to continue to move forward and
- 9:21to evolve.
- 9:22So, Mike, before we go, what else are
- 9:25we missing? You've got the ears of a
- 9:26lot of health plan leaders from all over
- 9:28the country. What are some last bits of
- 9:31advice you wanna share with them?
- 9:33So,
- 9:35value based care really is a journey that
- 9:37requires a commitment,
- 9:39innovation and
- 9:40collaboration. So
- 9:42at Priority Health, we're dedicated to transforming healthcare
- 9:45delivery by prioritizing value
- 9:48and focusing on the health and the well-being
- 9:50of our members.
- 9:51So our successes to date give us confidence
- 9:53that we can continue
- 9:54to lead,
- 9:56in this space with progressive partners,
- 9:59on the on the care delivery on the
- 10:00provider side and continue to improve outcomes and
- 10:03reduce costs for the communities we serve. So
- 10:05it really is about a partnership. It's about
- 10:08engagement.
- 10:09It's about finding,
- 10:11common ground and being able to move, the
- 10:14organization forward in the interest of the communities
- 10:16we,
- 10:17serve together.
- 10:19Wonderful. Well, Mike, thank you so much for
- 10:21taking the time to sit down with me
- 10:23and for sharing your insights with our audience.
- 10:25We really appreciate it. My pleasure. Thank you,
