- 1:11Speaker 3: Pearl Pirates. Coach welcome. Remember how you doing?
- 1:13Speaker 4: Oh doing?
- 1:13Speaker 1: Will Man?
- 1:14Speaker 3: We were sitting here talking about just talking up shoting
- 1:17Speaker 3: me you and Rod about reading kind of this stuff
- 1:20Speaker 3: on Peteneck Hos. These guys trying to get back into college. Man,
- 1:23Speaker 3: it's wild out there.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Oh it's a wild we West. It's really It's really
- 1:27Speaker 4: good for the Jucos in Mississippi. It is, you know,
- 1:30Speaker 4: you know, it's really tough on these kids around here
- 1:32Speaker 4: to try to get into universities and all that, with
- 1:34Speaker 4: all the kids getting the extra years.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Yeah, me and you were talking earlier, and I was telling,
- 1:37Speaker 3: you know, last year just going on Thursday nights and
- 1:40Speaker 3: working ball games and the product of the Mississippi Juco
- 1:43Speaker 3: is it's always been really good, but it felt like, man,
- 1:46Speaker 3: this thing's even better now. But it's a product of
- 1:48Speaker 3: what's going on in Division one.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I think.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Yeah, it's when you have older kids staying there long. Like,
- 1:54Speaker 4: you know, the only options you have for a lot
- 1:55Speaker 4: of your high school kids is go to JUCO and
- 1:57Speaker 4: it's been a couple of years and grow up and
- 2:00Speaker 4: get hit a little bit, and then all of a
- 2:01Speaker 4: sudden they go d one and all of a sudden
- 2:02Speaker 4: they're a hot commodity as well.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Let me ask you this from you know, you've been
- 2:06Speaker 3: doing this a long time. Tutelage of young men in
- 2:08Speaker 3: high school used to and when I say, used to
- 2:11Speaker 3: five years ago, if you were pretty darn good, you
- 2:14Speaker 3: may have a shot to maybe you know, obviously the
- 2:16Speaker 3: really good ones are gonna get theirs, but if you
- 2:18Speaker 3: were pretty good, you might have a shot to get
- 2:20Speaker 3: one of those last three, four or five spots or
- 2:23Speaker 3: maybe a gray shirt of Division one. What are you
- 2:25Speaker 3: guys telling young men now, because if it's if you're
- 2:28Speaker 3: not a bona fide you know, four five star, you know,
- 2:32Speaker 3: high three, ever you want to classify it, it's really
- 2:34Speaker 3: really tough for the young guys.
- 2:35Speaker 4: Yeah, really, you know, if they get an offer for
- 2:38Speaker 4: D one, we're telling them take it, take it, take
- 2:40Speaker 4: it why you can, because at any moment they could.
- 2:43Speaker 4: You know, if you don't do it, somebody else will.
- 2:46Speaker 4: And then you know, the great thing is a miss Sippo.
- 2:48Speaker 1: We have the Juco's.
- 2:48Speaker 4: It's really good. And we've had many kids the last
- 2:51Speaker 4: few years go there. We had a linebacker graduate two
- 2:53Speaker 4: years ago, one year Gulf Coast and he's already a Baylor.
- 2:57Speaker 4: So you know, they can go to DUCO for a
- 2:59Speaker 4: year and then all of a sudden they're gone. We
- 3:01Speaker 4: have a d lineman went to Gulf Coast two years ago,
- 3:04Speaker 4: but now he's at Oregon State. So you know, just
- 3:07Speaker 4: because you're going to JUCO don't mean you stay. You go,
- 3:10Speaker 4: put film together, and then all of a sudden you're
- 3:11Speaker 4: gone somewhere else.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's interesting to hear two different schools, Baylor
- 3:16Speaker 3: and then Oregon State. We are seeing more and I
- 3:19Speaker 3: think it's with the money. For instance, the Big Ten
- 3:21Speaker 3: is coming here. They're pulling guys left and right out
- 3:23Speaker 3: of Mississippi. The ACC is Juco's. Other schools are coming in.
- 3:28Speaker 3: I mean there's a lot of teams from all over
- 3:30Speaker 3: that's kind of cannibalizing on Misissippi talent.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Yeah, it's It was this summer we had the big
- 3:35Speaker 4: d tackle. He said, hey, Oregon State wants me to come.
- 3:38Speaker 4: He said, I've never been that far. He said, hey, man,
- 3:40Speaker 4: if you're ready to go, go yeah, And he said
- 3:42Speaker 4: all right. And I talked to him the other day.
- 3:44Speaker 4: They don't start last September fourteen. They already played three
- 3:46Speaker 4: ball games before they ever go to class. So he's
- 3:49Speaker 4: trying to fill his day up with practice and lifting
- 3:51Speaker 4: weights and getting ready for the ball games.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Visiting with the coach Ray Derr. He is the defensive
- 3:56Speaker 3: coordinator here at Pearl Wednesday edition of your program. I
- 3:58Speaker 3: was talking to coach school earlier. You guys were in
- 4:00Speaker 3: just about every ball game last year except I think
- 4:02Speaker 3: one where it kind of got control and spiraled. Those
- 4:05Speaker 3: things happened. When you look at Pearl defensively, you guys
- 4:09Speaker 3: have always been really tough, really hard I mean offensively
- 4:12Speaker 3: line of scrimmage football team. I would expect more of
- 4:14Speaker 3: that this year. Kind of take us through, you know,
- 4:16Speaker 3: some of the troubles last year, I mean, but again defensively.
- 4:19Speaker 3: I went down to Pedal, won a big game late
- 4:21Speaker 3: late in the year, had a chance against Stake Grove.
- 4:22Speaker 3: A lot of people felt like you were fixing to
- 4:24Speaker 3: literally get jump right into the playoffs. How that maybe
- 4:27Speaker 3: has motivated this group for this year.
- 4:29Speaker 4: Well, last year we was looking really good towards the end,
- 4:32Speaker 4: and big and running back Derick Alexander hurd his knees,
- 4:35Speaker 4: so he did. He missed the last three ball games
- 4:37Speaker 4: and he was a big part of the offense. And
- 4:39Speaker 4: when you lose him. You know, they stay on the field,
- 4:42Speaker 4: they keep the clock running. We don't have to be
- 4:45Speaker 4: on the field as much, and that's always good for
- 4:47Speaker 4: a defense. Come out there fresh, which this year he's
- 4:49Speaker 4: going to be playing some linebackers, so I'm excited about that.
- 4:54Speaker 3: I love talking modern day defense with cut defensive coordinators
- 4:58Speaker 3: versus you know, ten years ago, because it's so hard,
- 5:01Speaker 3: or at least I would perceive it to be to
- 5:03Speaker 3: teach in a game that's now. You can't lock guys
- 5:06Speaker 3: up at corner, right, you can't grab and touch, you
- 5:08Speaker 3: can't hit the quarterback. You know, if you do, it's
- 5:11Speaker 3: got to be the right kind of hit. And we
- 5:12Speaker 3: see that in the National Football League every Sunday. How
- 5:15Speaker 3: do you teach physicality in twenty twenty.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Six, Well, it's still the same old like in high school.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Now you don't have quite as many rules. You know,
- 5:22Speaker 4: as long as you do everything between the whistle is
- 5:23Speaker 4: still good. Sure, but you know, like every didn't practice.
- 5:27Speaker 4: You know, you still got to hit in practice. You know,
- 5:29Speaker 4: we don't want to get him Moody injured, but you
- 5:31Speaker 4: still you still got to go out there and get
- 5:33Speaker 4: after most days, so leading up to the games, Monday
- 5:36Speaker 4: and Tuesdays Usually we get after it pretty good. Wednesdays
- 5:39Speaker 4: Thursday will starts slowing down. But the only way to
- 5:41Speaker 4: be physical is to go out there and practice and
- 5:43Speaker 4: be physical as much as you can.
- 5:45Speaker 3: What about tackling in space? Has it seems like for
- 5:48Speaker 3: at least for me? And I know you and I've
- 5:50Speaker 3: talked about this to point over here at rod Is
- 5:53Speaker 3: and you look, you said a lot in college, some
- 5:55Speaker 3: bad tackling in open space, you know, angles taken, bad approach, angles,
- 6:00Speaker 3: just whiffing on tackles.
- 6:02Speaker 1: How do you teach that to these young guys.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Well, we do tackling drills every week and we throw
- 6:07Speaker 4: the ball out there and we tell the offensive guy
- 6:09Speaker 4: like you got from the hash to the sideline, and like,
- 6:12Speaker 4: defensive guy, let's get them down like we do openfield
- 6:14Speaker 4: tackling a good bit because football is not like it
- 6:16Speaker 4: used to be. We used to be in that little
- 6:18Speaker 4: box and it was all downhill. Now they're playing basketball
- 6:20Speaker 4: on the field where they throw it out there and
- 6:22Speaker 4: you get the best athlete they got on their team
- 6:24Speaker 4: one on one with your guy. So you know, we
- 6:27Speaker 4: do a lot of that out here. We do a
- 6:28Speaker 4: lot of perimeter tackling. We do perimeter drills where they
- 6:31Speaker 4: throw it out there and we have to go make plays.
- 6:34Speaker 4: We just try to wrap it up practice as much
- 6:36Speaker 4: we can.
- 6:36Speaker 3: You know, you mentioned going from a box to now
- 6:39Speaker 3: you're playing outside the hashes. We're seeing a movement in
- 6:42Speaker 3: college football. Just if you look at the last three years, oddly,
- 6:46Speaker 3: coming out of the Big Ten, Michigan, Ohio State, and
- 6:49Speaker 3: Indiana won national championships. They all were better line of
- 6:52Speaker 3: scrimmage teams than the teams they played. Indiana last year
- 6:54Speaker 3: I can't remember. I think they were somewhere around six
- 6:56Speaker 3: yards per clip per carry, almost had a really good
- 6:59Speaker 3: per carry average last year. So it looks like we're
- 7:01Speaker 3: seeing a return to the run game a little bit
- 7:03Speaker 3: because you know, obviously defensive personnel is a little smaller,
- 7:07Speaker 3: maybe at linebacker. How do you position personnel, you know,
- 7:10Speaker 3: in a again, Friday night, you guys may come our
- 7:12Speaker 3: air and play a team that's for wide and then
- 7:14Speaker 3: the next week you may play a team that's you know,
- 7:16Speaker 3: playing two tight end, two running backs and you know,
- 7:18Speaker 3: twenty two personnel.
- 7:19Speaker 4: Well, that's our job every Sunday to come in, you know,
- 7:22Speaker 4: make a game plan. What the personnel we got. You know,
- 7:24Speaker 4: we're not college, so we have to play what we got.
- 7:27Speaker 4: So if one week we got to put all the
- 7:29Speaker 4: big guys in there and we got to stop the run,
- 7:32Speaker 4: and then the next week we got a blitz packages
- 7:34Speaker 4: and all the little guys and they're runn around trying
- 7:35Speaker 4: to chase the quarterback. It's just something we have to
- 7:37Speaker 4: get ready for every week. And every Monday I sit
- 7:41Speaker 4: down and go over, you know, the game plan of
- 7:43Speaker 4: the week, and also you know, hey, what we're going
- 7:45Speaker 4: to expect, what we're going to see, and here's the
- 7:47Speaker 4: different things we're gonna have to do to stop that.
- 7:49Speaker 3: What's the hardest coach defense, hardest position to coach in
- 7:52Speaker 3: defense today?
- 7:53Speaker 1: Uh?
- 7:53Speaker 4: Probably secondary. I still think a secondary that's the one
- 7:57Speaker 4: that's the big play, that's the one everybody sees. Yeah,
- 8:00Speaker 4: just because you know, whoever's back there, there's nowhere to hide.
- 8:04Speaker 1: That's right.
- 8:04Speaker 4: I thow that songing over the top. You don't get it.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Everybody's gonna be looking and you're just looking like it
- 8:08Speaker 4: was me. Everybody knows it was you.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Is it harder to get safeties?
- 8:12Speaker 3: I've always wondered this because depending on what you're you know, matching,
- 8:16Speaker 3: if you're running man, maybe you're running some zone, maybe
- 8:18Speaker 3: you're doing some you know kind of quasi cloud or
- 8:20Speaker 3: whatever you're doing. To get safeties to trust the corners
- 8:23Speaker 3: or the corners to trust the safeties.
- 8:25Speaker 4: Well, one thing is try to make it as simple
- 8:27Speaker 4: as possible where they don't get messed up.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:29Speaker 4: That is the worst thing in the world. When one
- 8:31Speaker 4: thing they got deep and other things they got deep,
- 8:33Speaker 4: nobody gets deep, and all of sudden you gotta going
- 8:35Speaker 4: down the sideline and they both look at each other,
- 8:37Speaker 4: and then everybody is looking at you because apparently you
- 8:39Speaker 4: did something that they don't understand. Right, So just reponant
- 8:42Speaker 4: practice and making sure that they understand what you're going
- 8:45Speaker 4: to do, because we can make it as high take
- 8:47Speaker 4: as we want to, but they got to be able
- 8:48Speaker 4: to understand it on Friday night.
- 8:49Speaker 1: To be able to do it.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Finally, before we get to get out of here, we
- 8:52Speaker 3: got a couple more minutes here with coach Raid Deir,
- 8:54Speaker 3: defensive cordinator Pearl, tell me a little bit about your
- 8:56Speaker 3: defensive side.
- 8:56Speaker 1: This year and what you're expecting to see.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Uh, well, we agred waited all four linebackers from last year,
- 9:01Speaker 4: So we were robbing some from the offense to get
- 9:05Speaker 4: Derek over there. Derek Alexander over there, gonna play the
- 9:07Speaker 4: inside linebacker position for us. And then we you know,
- 9:11Speaker 4: we have two or three tenth traders got to step
- 9:14Speaker 4: up and play out there. And then we got a
- 9:16Speaker 4: big d lineman coming back, Marcus Dere He's a big
- 9:19Speaker 4: six one, three hundred pound guy that can move, so
- 9:22Speaker 4: that helps. And then we got the leader of our
- 9:24Speaker 4: secondary is Jaydon Thomas. He's got offered from uh D
- 9:27Speaker 4: one and Juco and he's a good little ball player
- 9:30Speaker 4: back there and he's gonna hit the one to make
- 9:31Speaker 4: sure communication on the back end is doing good.
- 9:34Speaker 3: But you know, and coach Schuller talked about it being
- 9:36Speaker 3: young in some places the non region schedule, Well you
- 9:41Speaker 3: can really see these guys kind of grow up in
- 9:42Speaker 3: five weeks, can't you.
- 9:43Speaker 2: You.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Yeah, we have no choice with the schedule we have.
- 9:46Speaker 4: We have to. You know, we got Madison next Thursday,
- 9:49Speaker 4: and they're good every year and we know that we
- 9:50Speaker 4: have to play the best we can. Then after that
- 9:53Speaker 4: we got Raren Central and Clinton. You know, like we
- 9:55Speaker 4: don't dodge anybody. We go ahead and get it one
- 9:57Speaker 4: of the getting's good and then well our district play.
- 10:00Speaker 4: You know, we have to be ready for everything by
- 10:03Speaker 4: the time district play comes because our district uh, you know,
- 10:06Speaker 4: in my opinion is one of the best in the
- 10:08Speaker 4: state of Mississippi. I think it's a lot of people's opinion.
- 10:10Speaker 1: There's no doubt, there's no doubt it is.
- 10:12Speaker 3: He is raided our defensive coordinator for the Pearl Pirates coach, thank.
- 10:14Speaker 1: You so much, best of luck this year. Yes, sir,
- 10:16Speaker 1: thank you.
