Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff Boscher from the Inside the Birds podcast is here.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hard to think football. We have all these playoffs going on. Man,
- 0:07Speaker 1: we got the six Ers tonight, We've got the Flyers
- 0:09Speaker 1: tonight as well. That game's on Rock one oh four
- 0:12Speaker 1: to one. But the Eagles were on the practice field
- 0:14Speaker 1: this weekend, right, I mean they were out there doing stuff.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Well, I mean rookie camp, so not all of the Eagles,
- 0:20Speaker 2: but you know, other guys are having you know, their
- 0:23Speaker 2: own camps, softball, charity softball games.
- 0:27Speaker 3: But it was good to see Eagles back on the field.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Gets some Eagles news there, right, And man, not only
- 0:33Speaker 2: hard to believe what you just said, but hard to
- 0:35Speaker 2: believe what's going on in Philly sports as opposed to
- 0:39Speaker 2: what it looked like three weeks ago.
- 0:40Speaker 3: So pretty amazing, I'll tell you what.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Like on this Monday, there was no way I was
- 0:45Speaker 1: thinking we're getting ready for a Sixers nick second round series,
- 0:49Speaker 1: that's for sure. I Mean, the Flyers after a three
- 0:52Speaker 1: to zero lead to Pittsburgh, you felt like they were
- 0:54Speaker 1: going to be front and center on everything, and they've
- 0:57Speaker 1: almost kind of fallen behind the Sixers now, and of
- 1:00Speaker 1: course the Phillies are back on track. But we know
- 1:02Speaker 1: the Eagles are king and you just mentioned the rookies
- 1:04Speaker 1: are out there, but you have high profile rookies. When
- 1:08Speaker 1: you take a skill position player. What were some of
- 1:10Speaker 1: the first impressions of Malachi Lemon on the field?
- 1:16Speaker 2: You know, I wasn't actually at the rookie camp, just
- 1:18Speaker 2: to let you know, but you know, I think that
- 1:21Speaker 2: what's interesting about Malachai Lemon is the pro readiness of
- 1:26Speaker 2: his skill set.
- 1:27Speaker 3: And you know, I.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Wrote something recently on Inside the Birds about him. I
- 1:32Speaker 2: was trying to do I'm sorry I wrote it on
- 1:33Speaker 2: Philly Voice. I was trying to project what his role
- 1:36Speaker 2: might be year one, and you do that based on
- 1:40Speaker 2: guys who are ordinarily Normally, when you try to do
- 1:43Speaker 2: project projections, you're trying to find comparable players, right, players
- 1:48Speaker 2: drafted in the same area and into situations. So I
- 1:51Speaker 2: went back five years and looked at all players drafted
- 1:54Speaker 2: between twenty and thirty overall and how they performed year one.
- 1:58Speaker 2: And now some I eliminated did right off the bat,
- 2:01Speaker 2: because some guys get overdrafted, some guys get into really
- 2:03Speaker 2: bad situations, right, So, like two guys I eliminated right
- 2:07Speaker 2: off the bat were Kadarius Tony and Quinton Johnston.
- 2:11Speaker 3: First of all, they're not either. Neither were built like him.
- 2:14Speaker 2: They were in bad situations. We all know Tony was
- 2:16Speaker 2: kind of a knucklehead and is out of the NFL
- 2:18Speaker 2: A right. Johnston doesn't run the same kind of routes
- 2:21Speaker 2: Lemon does, but I did find some really similar.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Looks. Like we lost Jeff Boscher, we'll try to pop
- 2:28Speaker 1: him back in on the stream here on the Sports
- 2:31Speaker 1: Bash Live ninety seven three ESPN. You know Malachi Lemon.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I was reading over at Inside the Birds from the
- 2:38Speaker 1: article that Andrew Decheko wrote, and one of the things
- 2:42Speaker 1: that he mentioned in the article, which I thought was
- 2:44Speaker 1: pretty cool. When you're taking a look at the article
- 2:48Speaker 1: from Andrew, he points out when it comes to Malachi
- 2:53Speaker 1: Lemon and the kind of interesting way to describe him
- 2:56Speaker 1: was first impressions of Malachi Lemon smooth opator as a
- 3:01Speaker 1: route runner. So obviously that's some pretty good news there
- 3:05Speaker 1: when you hear the stuff you're hearing about with him
- 3:08Speaker 1: as a smooth operator, and that's what you're hoping for.
- 3:12Speaker 1: You're hoping for a guy who can run the routes.
- 3:15Speaker 1: And when Jeff pops back into the stream here we will.
- 3:20Speaker 1: I want to ask him what Howie Roseman said the
- 3:22Speaker 1: other day on the Rich Eigen Show here on ninety
- 3:27Speaker 1: seven three ESPN, and which that was the fact of
- 3:31Speaker 1: the matter is. He said he was a great separator,
- 3:35Speaker 1: And I thought that was an interesting way to describe him,
- 3:38Speaker 1: because I think when you think, when you think about
- 3:40Speaker 1: Lemon and the four to five speed everybody's talking about his,
- 3:44Speaker 1: he doesn't have this game breaking speed and all of
- 3:47Speaker 1: that stuff. So to hear Roseman, his first impressions of
- 3:52Speaker 1: him was that he was a great separator. I thought
- 3:56Speaker 1: that was a pretty interesting way to describe Lemon, and
- 4:00Speaker 1: you think about what he can add to this offense.
- 4:03Speaker 1: We'll certainly be keeping an eye on him right from
- 4:08Speaker 1: day one, and the mini camps continued. Now, by the way,
- 4:11Speaker 1: Jeff kerr Over at Sports Illustrated wrote an article about
- 4:15Speaker 1: how the Eagles are not going to use all ten.
- 4:18Speaker 1: All right, there's Jeff, He's back into the stream. I
- 4:20Speaker 1: don't know what happened to you. We lost you there.
- 4:22Speaker 1: It's live radio. It happens.
- 4:23Speaker 3: How far did they make it before? Because I was babbling.
- 4:27Speaker 1: You talked about wow that whole time. Yeah, I was
- 4:31Speaker 1: we were waiting for you to pop back in. We
- 4:33Speaker 1: were talking about Lemon and you were kind of talking
- 4:35Speaker 1: about some, you know, different things about him. One thing
- 4:38Speaker 1: I want to put your way that I was talking
- 4:40Speaker 1: about why you weren't on the show with us, which
- 4:43Speaker 1: is on Friday show. I think it was Howie Roseman
- 4:47Speaker 1: was on the Rich Eisen Show and he was asked
- 4:50Speaker 1: about Lemon, and he said that he was a great separator.
- 4:54Speaker 1: And I thought that was a very interesting way because
- 4:56Speaker 1: I think when you look at his speed, you don't
- 4:59Speaker 1: think of separation when thinking about Lemon.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Yeah, but separation isn't always about speed.
- 5:04Speaker 2: It's about how you run your stem and the way
- 5:09Speaker 2: you get Like for example, DeVante Smith, he didn't even
- 5:11Speaker 2: he wasn't a fact.
- 5:12Speaker 3: He didn't run the forty right.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Speed is not his thing, but he has excellent separation
- 5:18Speaker 2: at the top of his route because he understands how
- 5:20Speaker 2: to get into a cornerback's hip and then make and
- 5:23Speaker 2: it makes razor sharp cuts. Same thing with Puka Nakua
- 5:27Speaker 2: in a way can get open without five yards needed
- 5:30Speaker 2: of separation because they know how to work defensive backs.
- 5:35Speaker 2: And Makai Lemon strikes me as that kind of player
- 5:38Speaker 2: who has a pro ready skill set and a knowledge
- 5:40Speaker 2: and an understanding of how to out leverage cornerbacks, maybe
- 5:45Speaker 2: safeties whoever he's going up against in the slot, right
- 5:48Speaker 2: or on the outside to make the space where to
- 5:51Speaker 2: use his body. And he has really good hands. So yeah,
- 5:55Speaker 2: separation isn't always a speed thing. In fact, there are
- 5:58Speaker 2: some great speed receivers who can't separate because they don't
- 6:02Speaker 2: have the ability to fool a corner and corners can
- 6:06Speaker 2: run too. Yeah.
- 6:07Speaker 1: I feel like poor John Ross keeps getting pulled into
- 6:10Speaker 1: this conversation as a guy that can run but couldn't
- 6:13Speaker 1: run routes.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Yeah, And you know interesting because before I lost you,
- 6:19Speaker 2: I was referring to an article I wrote on Philly
- 6:21Speaker 2: Voice where I tried to compare. I tried to figure
- 6:24Speaker 2: out what McKay Lemon could do in year one and
- 6:27Speaker 2: use like a comp system, And by comp I tried
- 6:30Speaker 2: to find guys who are similar situations, are drafted in
- 6:33Speaker 2: that twenty to thirty area in the first round over
- 6:35Speaker 2: the past five years, and they were in similar offenses
- 6:39Speaker 2: or similar environments. So like, I wasn't gonna comp like
- 6:42Speaker 2: Kadarius Tony to McKay Lemon because he was in a
- 6:46Speaker 2: bad situation.
- 6:46Speaker 3: He wasn't even that great a receiver. He's out of
- 6:48Speaker 3: football already.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I wasn't gonna camp Quentin Johnston because he doesn't run
- 6:51Speaker 2: the kind of route tree right that McKayle Lemon did.
- 6:55Speaker 2: So the best comp I was thinking Xavier Worthy was it.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Company's not really the same kind of guy. He was
- 7:00Speaker 2: a four to two runner, which is not what mackay
- 7:04Speaker 2: Lemon is. But unfortunately for the Chiefs, right, they've had
- 7:07Speaker 2: to use Worthy differently over the first years because of injuries.
- 7:11Speaker 2: They've actually used him more as a possession receiver than
- 7:14Speaker 2: a deep threat. So his first year he caught fifty
- 7:17Speaker 2: nine passes for six hundred and thirty eight yards, which
- 7:21Speaker 2: sixty catchers for six thirty eight is. You would never think,
- 7:24Speaker 2: Zavi You're Worthy would be that close to like ten
- 7:26Speaker 2: yards per catch. You thought coming into the league he'd
- 7:28Speaker 2: be like fifteen yards per catch, right, So I thought
- 7:31Speaker 2: there was some comp there between what you could expect
- 7:34Speaker 2: from Worthy and Lemon. But I really thought the guys
- 7:36Speaker 2: that made the most sense were Jordan Addison, who went
- 7:39Speaker 2: into an offense that had justin Jefferson and Hockinson already
- 7:43Speaker 2: just like the you know, Lemon will have DeVante Smith
- 7:46Speaker 2: and got her. And his first year he was a
- 7:50Speaker 2: little inflated because if you remember, Jefferson missed like seven games,
- 7:54Speaker 2: so Addison sort of became default number one. He caught
- 7:57Speaker 2: seventy balls for nine hundred and eleven yards and one
- 8:00Speaker 2: to eight targets. I also thought Jackson Smith and Jigba
- 8:04Speaker 2: was a similar guy as far as body size, skill set.
- 8:07Speaker 2: He went twentieth overall and he was behind Lockett and
- 8:11Speaker 2: Metcalf in the pecking order. He had sixty three catches
- 8:14Speaker 2: for six twenty eight yards on ninety three targets, So
- 8:17Speaker 2: that's kind of where like sixty fifty to sixty catch
- 8:19Speaker 2: range is where I think you're looking at Mikhai Lemon,
- 8:22Speaker 2: something between six hundred and eight hundred yards receiving. I
- 8:26Speaker 2: don't know that it'll be a high touchdown guy unless
- 8:29Speaker 2: he catches a lot of red zone touchdowns.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Yeah, And you know those are both interesting, especially Smith
- 8:34Speaker 1: and Jigba would be fantastic obviously.
- 8:37Speaker 2: As a rooker, though I should Mentioniney Smith and Jigma
- 8:40Speaker 2: has a higher upside because he was a more explosive player.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Coming out of college.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Well, and they had DK there his first year, so
- 8:46Speaker 1: I mean that's a little bocket.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Absolutely. I like the way that Andrew wrote about him
- 8:52Speaker 1: at Inside the Birds. He said Lemon is a smooth
- 8:55Speaker 1: operator as a route runner. The USC product was elegant
- 8:59Speaker 1: and precise. This is well written by the way, elegant
- 9:02Speaker 1: and precise in his movement. So it kind of shows
- 9:05Speaker 1: you the attention to detail that you're getting with Lemon.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Yes, that is good wording, and queue the shad day
- 9:12Speaker 2: on smooth operator.
- 9:15Speaker 3: It's not away with words.
- 9:16Speaker 2: So that's I think that's a fair way, you know,
- 9:20Speaker 2: is it poetry and motion. That's a little He doesn't collide.
- 9:24Speaker 2: He is a guy who plays physically right, but there
- 9:28Speaker 2: is kind of a beauty with which he plays the
- 9:29Speaker 2: game because I always like respected receivers who didn't have
- 9:34Speaker 2: elite speed and had to use other techniques to get open.
- 9:37Speaker 2: And you know, like we was talking about with Davonte Smith,
- 9:40Speaker 2: not a speed receiver, but somebody who just can run
- 9:43Speaker 2: every single route to perfection clinically technician and can beat
- 9:48Speaker 2: a defense over the top because he's so razor sharp
- 9:51Speaker 2: with his cuts.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Jeff Mosier football at four let's go to Eli Stowers,
- 9:55Speaker 1: who Howie Roseman said on The Rich Eigen Show that
- 10:00Speaker 1: he has incredible physical tolls. When you think of Stours,
- 10:03Speaker 1: is that what stands out?
- 10:05Speaker 2: Oh? I mean, I can't stop thinking about the forty
- 10:07Speaker 2: five in an inch forty five and a half inch
- 10:10Speaker 2: vertical that this guy has. I mean, that's just incredible.
- 10:13Speaker 2: He had a great broad jump a quarterback. You know,
- 10:16Speaker 2: the Eagles have done well with guys who first played
- 10:19Speaker 2: quarterback and transitioned to other positions, Like I don't know
- 10:23Speaker 2: Lane Johnson, for example, he was a He started his
- 10:26Speaker 2: career as a junior college quarterback, and then he like
- 10:29Speaker 2: grew and ate himself into becoming a tight end, and
- 10:32Speaker 2: then grew and ate himself into becoming a defensive end,
- 10:35Speaker 2: and then he did it into an offensive tackle. There
- 10:38Speaker 2: are a couple other guys Eagles have had who started
- 10:40Speaker 2: off as quarterbacks, transitioned to other spots and have succeeded
- 10:45Speaker 2: because they have great athleticism.
- 10:47Speaker 3: And tight end is one of those positions.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Where if you have great and it doesn't mean you're
- 10:52Speaker 2: definitely gonna be awesome, but it's a really good starting.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Point when you have that kind of athleticism well, And.
- 10:57Speaker 1: One guy who is a quarterback right now is Payton.
- 11:00Speaker 1: He was at the mini camp on over the weekend.
- 11:03Speaker 1: He was the only quarterback there, so they had to
- 11:06Speaker 1: use him in that role. So we'll see how much
- 11:09Speaker 1: run he gets as a quarterback. Do you think that's
- 11:12Speaker 1: something they're going to look at him closely at all?
- 11:15Speaker 2: This situation with the Eagles has to get itself worked
- 11:18Speaker 2: out for my quarterback situation because it's at normal right
- 11:22Speaker 2: now and I'm having some just difficulty seeing it staying
- 11:28Speaker 2: the way it is.
- 11:29Speaker 3: And what I mean by that is you.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Have a number two quarterback in Tanner McKee's, you're back
- 11:33Speaker 2: in the quarterback right In any NFL practice, the number
- 11:38Speaker 2: three quarterback runs the scout team and there's really not
- 11:41Speaker 2: a lot of reps for the number two quarterback, so
- 11:43Speaker 2: it's hard for those guys to get prepared, right. So
- 11:47Speaker 2: if there's already not enough reps for Tanner McKee as
- 11:49Speaker 2: the backup, how are there going to be any for
- 11:51Speaker 2: Cole Peyton, who would ideally you would like to be
- 11:54Speaker 2: on the scout team. But that's where Andy Dalton, who
- 11:57Speaker 2: has you know, played in this league from fifteen years
- 12:00Speaker 2: as playoff wins has been a Pro Bowl. This is
- 12:03Speaker 2: a very abnormal scout team quarterback. And I'm not sure
- 12:06Speaker 2: how Andy Tolton's gonna feel about this when the reality
- 12:09Speaker 2: of it all sets in. So I just think that
- 12:11Speaker 2: this situation before we can speculate on reps and where
- 12:15Speaker 2: how they're gonna use. I think it's gonna work itself out.
- 12:18Speaker 3: If this is what it is going into the year, then.
- 12:20Speaker 2: That's what it is, and we'll talk about it. But
- 12:22Speaker 2: I don't know that it's gonna be all right.
- 12:25Speaker 1: A couple other quick notes I do have for Jeff
- 12:28Speaker 1: Boscher here football for Howie Roseman, when asked about Jonathan Gernard.
- 12:32Speaker 1: I like the way he described this. This was on
- 12:34Speaker 1: the Rich Eyes and Show on nine he seven three ESPN.
- 12:36Speaker 1: He said, it's like having a turbo button. You know,
- 12:39Speaker 1: he liked what they had already, but it's like a
- 12:41Speaker 1: video game where you just hit the turbo button and
- 12:43Speaker 1: it just takes you to another level. That's how he
- 12:46Speaker 1: kind of described adding Jonathan Grenard to Jalx Hunt and
- 12:50Speaker 1: Nolan Smith and the group that they already have.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Yeah, we talked last week about why Jalen Phillips was
- 12:55Speaker 2: so good, such a good fit for Vic Fangio because
- 12:58Speaker 2: he was a big, strong, eye to fifty to sixty right,
- 13:02Speaker 2: dual threat kind of edge who can stop the run
- 13:05Speaker 2: and also rush the passer. And Grenard's a little bit smaller.
- 13:09Speaker 2: But that's what you're trading off, is that you're getting
- 13:12Speaker 2: a guy who just has an extra motor rushing the passer.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I mean yeah, all yeah to do is look at
- 13:18Speaker 2: his game played and look at his stats, sack stats, right,
- 13:21Speaker 2: I mean he knows how to come off the ball
- 13:24Speaker 2: very quickly and hit quarterbacks and that's going to be
- 13:27Speaker 2: a big addition to this edge group all right.
- 13:30Speaker 1: By the way, voluntary mini camps the twenty sixth and
- 13:33Speaker 1: the twenty seventh, the twenty ninth, June one and two,
- 13:37Speaker 1: June four, and then the mandatory June ninth and tenth,
- 13:40Speaker 1: So AJ Brown would probably be not around for maybe
- 13:46Speaker 1: that first voluntary June one unless they make that trade
- 13:49Speaker 1: immediately that day. But we'll keep your eye on that
- 13:52Speaker 1: as well. The last two things the Eagles did pick
- 13:55Speaker 1: up the fifty year options on Jalen Carter he's going
- 13:58Speaker 1: to get twenty seven million, and the Nolan Smith option.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Were you surprised by either of those. I'm not.
- 14:06Speaker 3: You know, positional value is huge.
- 14:08Speaker 2: I mean, let's let's let's break down for Jalen Carter,
- 14:11Speaker 2: it really becomes a placeholder for a contract extension. And
- 14:15Speaker 2: of course, when you're Carter and his agent, the extension
- 14:18Speaker 2: has to start with at least twenty seven million guaranteed
- 14:22Speaker 2: because that's what the tag, which is fine. I mean,
- 14:24Speaker 2: the Eagles didn't think they were going to sign this
- 14:26Speaker 2: guy to an extension that didn't include twenty seven million
- 14:28Speaker 2: dollars in guaranteed money. I think there was a no
- 14:32Speaker 2: brainer kind of element to the idea of doing it
- 14:35Speaker 2: for Nolan Edge Nolan Smith because he's an edge and
- 14:37Speaker 2: positional value and he's got still upside even though he's
- 14:40Speaker 2: been injured. But Mike, I tell you what the number
- 14:43Speaker 2: on that is. Thirteen million, right or about thirteen or
- 14:45Speaker 2: fourteen seven? Yeah, forts to call fourteen that's really interesting
- 14:50Speaker 2: because that's for the twenty twenty seven.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Season, right, that's for next season, right.
- 14:55Speaker 2: So I expect that Jaylex Hunt is still going to
- 14:57Speaker 2: be on team Grenard could still be on teams. So
- 15:00Speaker 2: fourteen million is a lot for a guy who may
- 15:03Speaker 2: not be your starter.
- 15:05Speaker 3: I mean you would then put him in the.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Quote unquote situational pass rusher or DPR type label, which
- 15:11Speaker 2: every team needs and has and is valuable.
- 15:13Speaker 3: But that's a lot of money for a DPR.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Now you'll you might play him quite a bit because
- 15:19Speaker 2: he's that good.
- 15:20Speaker 1: But does that make him does that make him a
- 15:23Speaker 1: harder trade candidate?
- 15:25Speaker 3: I don't know, No, not for a team who would
- 15:27Speaker 3: trade for him to be a starter?
- 15:29Speaker 1: Right?
- 15:29Speaker 2: So, but I think to your point, it makes him
- 15:33Speaker 2: more Yeah, because if you know, and by the way,
- 15:38Speaker 2: this whole we talk about this on inside the Birds pod.
- 15:41Speaker 3: No Vic has it dropped today.
- 15:42Speaker 2: You should listen to it because there's a lot of
- 15:44Speaker 2: critical thinking here. Vic has ordinarily only played a three
- 15:48Speaker 2: man edge rotation. Okay, so he's going into the year.
- 15:52Speaker 2: He's playing Smith, he's playing as long as everybody's healthy
- 15:55Speaker 2: Hunt Smith and Grenard. Right, they signed Arnold Abacketty for
- 15:59Speaker 2: like four four and a half million. Okay, that's not
- 16:02Speaker 2: trump change. I mean, is he gonna play?
- 16:04Speaker 1: And what a bunch of those guys around last year.
- 16:09Speaker 3: You don't want to pay these guys a lot of
- 16:10Speaker 3: money not to collect dust on the bench. And by
- 16:13Speaker 3: the way, if Brandon Graham comes back, you know, Vick
- 16:15Speaker 3: is going to play Brandon Graham. So that's another guy.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Though that you could play him more in the inside
- 16:21Speaker 1: or you.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Could, but like then, who you're taking? How are you
- 16:25Speaker 3: taking Geordan Davids, Are you taking Carter off? Or you're
- 16:27Speaker 3: taking Joe Mo?
- 16:28Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, you absolutely could, but it does become
- 16:30Speaker 2: another guy to take reps away from somebody.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Else, right, all right, Jeff Bocher the football for powered
- 16:41Speaker 1: by the Inside the Birds podcast, brought to you by
- 16:43Speaker 1: the Fanatic Sportsbook at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City.
- 16:46Speaker 1: They'll have the Sixers on tonight. They'll have the Flyers
- 16:48Speaker 1: on tonight. The Philly's play tonight too. You can watch
