- 0:32Welcome to the Clydesdale Media Roundtable.
- 0:36It's a podcast.
- 0:38Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 0:39Yeah, the holidays are coming.
- 0:40Mine's not working completely, but we're going to have some fun today because we have with us the 35 to 39-year-old champion of legends, Megan Markey.
- 0:51Megan, how are you doing?
- 0:52I'm doing great.
- 0:53Thanks for having me.
- 0:55I'm so excited to talk to you.
- 0:57We kind of talked off air a little bit.
- 0:59You're the third person we've interviewed thus far.
- 1:02And your story is just different than the other two we've talked about.
- 1:07The other two kind of accidentally fell into CrossFit.
- 1:12And it just was something that they were kind of naturally good at and worked at to get better.
- 1:17You've been around the sport for a little while.
- 1:20You've been doing the Open for a while.
- 1:22You've done teams.
- 1:23You've done a lot of things.
- 1:25So I'm going to turn it over to Jamie in a second.
- 1:29But my first question to you is when you signed up for Legends, like what was the goal?
- 1:36Yeah, my goal was kind of to check out the Masters division.
- 1:41I'm newer to the Masters division.
- 1:43This is technically my second year because of where the, you know, the age cutoffs for the games.
- 1:48I technically was Masters as a three, four year old.
- 1:51And so I just, I'm newer and I kind of wanted to see what it was, is the programming different?
- 1:54What are the people like?
- 1:55You know, where do I hang with this group versus the group I'm used to?
- 2:01And so I think just kind of exploring that was really my goal.
- 2:07What did you discover?
- 2:09Well, it seems like I can hang, which is great.
- 2:13You know, I don't know.
- 2:14I'm still going to have to keep exploring is, you know, is the programming like we saw, you know, that weekend?
- 2:19Is that,
- 2:21how masters is, or is that this one weekend, you know, that we had with Bob.
- 2:25So I'm, I'm still trying to sift through that.
- 2:27You know, I did do a couple of the quarterfinals and in masters and some of those workouts to try to figure out, you know, like, is it, is it less skill?
- 2:34Um, or is it not, you know, do why do we do so many more lunges and benching, you know, is that a pattern or is that just something that happened to happen a couple, you know, in a couple of years.
- 2:43So I'm kind of just still wrapping my mind around, you know, the whole division.
- 2:47Yeah.
- 2:51Yeah.
- 2:52Um, yeah, I mean, so like, so the audience knows you were in the 35, 39 for the open season this past year, um, and made it to quarterfinals and they only took this past year.
- 3:07They only took the top 30 to semifinals and you were 39.
- 3:11Yeah.
- 3:13And that's even better than honestly, I thought I was going to do.
- 3:15I thought, you know, I've had a whirlwind of things in my, in my personal life in the last year.
- 3:20Um,
- 3:20all positive, but all bringing me away from CrossFit and training.
- 3:23Um, and so that was also kind of an exploratory, like, where do I fall?
- 3:27Really no expectations to move past quarterfinals, but where I play.
- 3:30So I was like, oh, okay, well maybe I can keep doing this, you know, maybe it's not over for me.
- 3:34Um,
- 3:36But, you know, doing the math to, you know, still kind of evaluating like for how few people they take.
- 3:40Does it make sense for me to keep doing, you know, a standard individual route?
- 3:45Does it make sense to do team?
- 3:46You know, it's like, what's my best avenue forward in the sport?
- 3:49Where, you know, where do I my skills fit best?
- 3:54So that was still kind of exploratory.
- 3:55So honestly, that placement I was still pretty happy with.
- 3:58Um, and would have been in no place to move on to, to further, you know, games or, you know, semifinals events anyway.
- 4:08Did you do all the semifinals workouts to see where you would have been?
- 4:13I did some of them.
- 4:14I don't, I didn't get them all done.
- 4:16Um, but I did, you know, I certainly paid attention to them.
- 4:19Um, I definitely saw the skill go up.
- 4:22I saw some of the weights people were putting up.
- 4:24Um, and so, um,
- 4:26You know, it's I think it's going to look a lot different this year with how many more people they're taking in.
- 4:32So we're going to have to kind of reevaluate, you know, which way I want to go.
- 4:38Absolutely.
- 4:39I mean, it has to make you excited knowing
- 4:41now it's 25 move on and then 40 get to make it to the game so like you would have been you would have been in so you have a real for sure a real shot this year but also we get to we get to not pay two it's the same weekend we get to do the individual quarterfinals so you have both options right out the gate right super exciting for someone like me that doesn't still doesn't really know where i belong
- 5:02Um, and I get to, you know, I think it's going to be all the same workouts, right?
- 5:05If I read that, right.
- 5:06So everyone in the gym gets to do it together, um, versus having to like squeeze in, you know, everybody, you know, everybody else who's younger does the workouts with me to help me out and I do their work.
- 5:16So I'll help them out.
- 5:17And we're all just tired at the end of the week, you know, that month.
- 5:20Um, so I think that's going to be a fun change.
- 5:22We'll see if that sticks, but it will be fun to do this year.
- 5:25Yeah.
- 5:28It's one of the things you discovered.
- 5:30doing legends that online competition may not be your best self, that in-person competition is actually better for you?
- 5:41I don't think it's that.
- 5:42I think that online competitions give you less workouts.
- 5:45And I think
- 5:46The suspicions I always have, I think were proven to be true over legends, which is that the more workouts you give me, the better I'm going to do.
- 5:53I think a three-day comp is better than a two-day comp for me.
- 5:56And I think an online qualifier with like three to five workouts isn't going to be as good for me when everyone can do it multiple times, take their sweet time to do it.
- 6:02Um, I think I have stamina to last a whole weekend.
- 6:05And I think that, you know, I do have some holes that I really need to work on.
- 6:08And the more workouts you give me, the more I can overcome those.
- 6:11So if you look at the legends weekend, right, we started with swimming, not a forte of mine.
- 6:16I was super exposed, which is good for me.
- 6:18And I take with open arms.
- 6:21Um, and then we had a lift, not a strength of mine either.
- 6:24Um, and especially hasn't been a priority for me in the last couple of years.
- 6:27It's something I have to work really hard out to stay strong.
- 6:30And if I neglect it for a little bit, it shows quickly.
- 6:32So, you know, we started the whole, the day I started in 18th, I think.
- 6:36And I was like, top half, like, it's not too bad.
- 6:40You know, that's kind of was my, I was like, well, considering there were two weaknesses, you know, and then I slowly clawed my way back up, which is just my story in CrossFit through the years.
- 6:50And so I think I was just given the time in Legends to show that and to come back.
- 6:56And so I think it's more of that than online because, you know, previously in the open, I've placed pretty well, you know, and it's kind of been, you know, I make, you know, I maybe make the team because of my open scores.
- 7:08But then, you know, when we go into later competition, I'm not strong enough and I'm kind of the weak link.
- 7:12And so.
- 7:13you know, I've helped teams get there and then not been super helpful on the other end of it.
- 7:17Um, so online qualifiers usually are okay for me.
- 7:19You know, I finished fifth in legends, having not repeated any of the workouts.
- 7:23I did them in a few days.
- 7:24Um, so, you know, I don't think it's that, um, I think that, um, I think I learned, you know, I learned that long, long weekends are good for me.
- 7:33And I learned, um, how important scoring is for the choices you make.
- 7:38Um,
- 7:38the on the floor right i think a lot of athletes didn't pay attention to the scoring style that um that was chosen um that really uh benefited somebody placing first through six um versus middle of the pack throughout the weekend right so when you had a two-part workout it was much better to place
- 7:58first and last than it was to be to place 10th and 10th, um, because of how the scoring worked out.
- 8:04Um, and so I think, especially, you know, getting to that last day, I think, you know, I wonder if, you know, some other athletes had realized that if they would have made different choices in those last workouts.
- 8:14So that was a lot to unpack.
- 8:17I'm going to turn to Jamie for a second because I see similarities in that where did what Megan say about having more workouts, is that better for you?
- 8:30Did that resonate with you, Jamie, as well?
- 8:32Oh, a thousand percent.
- 8:34Yeah, I've always preferred more workouts.
- 8:37And I don't like the online format where people...
- 8:43do a workout three times.
- 8:44And I mean, you don't get that luxury in a comp.
- 8:48You hit the floor, you do it.
- 8:50Mistakes happen.
- 8:51Like the rope climb workout for me.
- 8:53Like things happen.
- 8:55Things don't go perfectly and you don't get to redo it and put in a better score.
- 8:59I was the same as you in the, in the online qualifier.
- 9:01I just did them one time through and was confident enough that I'd make it there.
- 9:05Even if I'm not sitting in
- 9:07top five to make it there.
- 9:08It doesn't really matter.
- 9:09Like I just need to get there.
- 9:10Right.
- 9:11I don't want to stress over online qualifiers.
- 9:14But yeah, more for me has always been better.
- 9:17I would say we've been very similar type athlete.
- 9:21Like I know the audience doesn't know this, but I've known Megan now since we were at Granite Games together and Megan actually went with, I've talked about Selena on here plenty of times.
- 9:30Megan was on a team with Selena and that's where we met.
- 9:33And so I've followed Megan's story for years.
- 9:38And I will, I think we're pretty similar athlete.
- 9:40Like you were, like you said, you were 20th in the strength at legends.
- 9:44And I said this on the other podcast, only one person to one of the 65 year olds, but only one, one person.
- 9:52outside of that, that won the strength won their division.
- 9:55So like, I will say, I think legends was well rounded enough programming that what didn't need to be the strongest athlete, like they really had some CrossFit stuff in there.
- 10:05And that paid out in the end, not just being the strongest.
- 10:09So that was great for both of us for sure.
- 10:12Yeah.
- 10:13And I think that I've always been good at pushing my 80, 90% in Metcons, which is not something you're supposed to be able to do, which shows that my maxes should be higher, but is also a trainable skill to be able to hold 80% through a Metcon.
- 10:26I mean, I won the heaviest workout Metcon that there was with the 155 squat cleans, but had one of the lowest lift scores.
- 10:35So
- 10:36You know, I think that's just something that I prioritize and find as just as an athlete and as a person more important that I can push heavyweights for a lot of reps over having a strong max, but you know, you pay for that too.
- 10:51So shout out to not a taxidermy deer, uh, who gave us $1 99.
- 10:54I agree, Jamie one and done.
- 10:58Um,
- 10:59that brings me to a question I have for both of you is Jamie and I've, I've talked about this on our show that there seems to be a trend of getting heavier through that, that a more importance is put on getting heavier.
- 11:13What is your, you've been around the sport a while.
- 11:16What are your impressions of that?
- 11:18And how do you see that working out as you move into masters or maybe not getting heavier, like your body weight or the workouts getting heavier?
- 11:28I would almost say both.
- 11:30Yeah.
- 11:31Yeah.
- 11:32Um, I think it was moving that way very quickly.
- 11:36Um, if you look at something like the 2015 regionals where like not a lot of women could overhead or could snatch one 55, but they had overhead squats in the floor.
- 11:47Remember that workout?
- 11:49Um, and it started to almost fire a lot of control in my opinion.
- 11:53Um, I didn't think they were testing the fittest people anymore.
- 11:56I think they were just testing the strongest people.
- 11:58Um, I feel like there's been a step back, um, in the last handful of years to even that out a little bit more.
- 12:04Um, which I think at least for me, I've, I've looked at the program in the last couple of years and been like, well, maybe this is interesting again for me because I felt like with my size, I was getting phased out a little bit.
- 12:15Um, and I, I feel like I'm in the game again with some of the new changes they've made.
- 12:20Um, I think, you know, we've always seen...
- 12:23you're a little bit limited in that, you know, semifinals or regionals, um, you know, stage by the facility they're in.
- 12:32But once you get to the games, I mean, they are, they are testing agility.
- 12:35They're testing so many things that I think they're struggling to test in earlier stages.
- 12:39Um, so I think they want to test it.
- 12:44I think they're not always, they're not always hitting the mark in something like the open.
- 12:47Um,
- 12:49But yeah, I don't know.
- 12:50I mean, I hope the trend continues to be more well-rounded and less big size, but I'm optimistic about it personally.
- 12:57If you asked me three years ago, I'm not sure I would have said the same thing, but I like where it's going.
- 13:03And I'm crossing my fingers that bigger isn't always better.
- 13:06I've certainly been...
- 13:08All shapes and sizes.
- 13:09I've, you know, I've, I've learned how to control my body over the years and, you know, I've been about 15 pounds heavier than I am now.
- 13:15Um, you know, shooting for an individual, uh, you know, uh, sanctional at the time.
- 13:22Um, and I've been about 15 pounds less than I am now.
- 13:26Which at my body weight, I sit somewhere around 125.
- 13:29That's a huge difference.
- 13:32And so I felt how CrossFit is at all those body weights.
- 13:34And it certainly does make a difference to be bigger, especially when you bring in something like machines.
- 13:40But as long as you have enough workouts, period, and enough workouts that are different, yeah.
- 13:47and not just power workouts.
- 13:48You know, I think you should be able to, I mean, I should still be training power, right?
- 13:52I should still be lifting heavy just because I'm small.
- 13:55So as long as you make me do all the things, I still think I can, you know, claw my way out of those and do some damage control.
- 14:03What are your thoughts of legends not having a machine?
- 14:08Yeah.
- 14:08I mean, I don't want to speculate, but you know, with games happening in the future, you know, I imagine there was some,
- 14:16difficulty with sponsorships and getting machines in.
- 14:19If I was just to speculate, I could see how that would be challenging to have conflicting sponsors, having to start to use some of the game's sponsors and having that conflict with another brand or something.
- 14:32So I wonder if that's not part of it.
- 14:35I think I would have liked to see more monostructural components, period, but I don't think it has to be a machine.
- 14:41And I think to test power, you don't need a machine.
- 14:43Um, we have our legs, we could have run, right.
- 14:46It was beautiful in Arizona.
- 14:47I think that was, you know, definitely could have happened.
- 14:51Um, I think, you know, not seeing events over like 10 or 15 minutes was.
- 14:56Um, for me, kind of a bummer just because I'm really proud of, you know, the varied time domains that I train in.
- 15:01Um, but you know, events get to choose whatever they want to test you and you show up and, you know,
- 15:09If they, I mean, it was a challenge in its own right to do eight minute workouts basically throughout the whole weekend.
- 15:14That felt like Fran, like, can you sprint until you're almost throwing up twice a day for four days?
- 15:19Like that was a test in itself.
- 15:21No one's ever asked me to do that before.
- 15:22So, I mean, you know, it's every, every comp is different and you have to be able to hang for whatever they ask you.
- 15:31Right.
- 15:32We could have shown up and it could have been a heavy workout for every single workout.
- 15:35And that was still the comp.
- 15:38You know, they didn't tell us before we got there really what we were doing, which I love.
- 15:42I mean, that's like old school CrossFit, right?
- 15:43Like our old competitions, you didn't know what the workouts were.
- 15:46You showed up and they were sitting, you know, they'd say, do this.
- 15:49And I love that.
- 15:53I agree.
- 15:53No practice, no gaming.
- 15:55Yep.
- 15:58You mentioned that you bet you've been on teams a lot.
- 16:02Do you, do you prefer one over the other teams or individual?
- 16:08I think historically teams workouts have been a lot more sprinty and that's not my favorite.
- 16:14I have a background in field sports.
- 16:17I have a big, a pretty big aerobic base.
- 16:20And so I like being able to go my own pace and I like longer workouts.
- 16:26But there's something about suffering with a team and training with a team that just, you can't replicate by yourself.
- 16:31So I like both for their own reasons.
- 16:34I think that
- 16:37Something I've learned, something I learned actually from going to Granite Games with this team that I had never met before.
- 16:43The way we formed this team is just everybody who was in 50th place in the qualifier just came together and joined the team.
- 16:47We emailed each other and we said, wouldn't this be cool?
- 16:50And to the credit of Granite Games, I think we were all pretty much on the same level.
- 16:55At that, in that time of year, like at that exact date.
- 16:59And I don't think I've ever had more fun on a team prior to that.
- 17:02I maybe have been shooting for individual, didn't make it.
- 17:05So I pushed together this team of people who weren't ready and I was peaking or the opposite, right?
- 17:12I call my way into a team that I really shouldn't be on and I'm the weak link and it's not fun.
- 17:17On that end either.
- 17:19So I think that when I experienced everyone being like the same fitness level, the same pace.
- 17:24you know, everyone having a hole and covering each other.
- 17:27Like we had a team that meshed.
- 17:28I think I started to realize how it could be really fun.
- 17:31I just maybe haven't had the right, you know, the right people to make it work.
- 17:37And of course it gets so hard when it's, you know, only affiliates too, you know, when there was that rule and then we kind of go back and forth about if that's a rule every year, but it just gets hard with scheduling.
- 17:46Six people teams was a nightmare to schedule, right?
- 17:49So 4% team is a great change.
- 17:53I would love to see three-person same-sex teams be part of the games or have that be a permanent change to the games.
- 17:59If I were to vote, that's what I would do.
- 18:02I think for flow, it would be easier.
- 18:04You already have all the women's equipment set up.
- 18:06Now you run a team, right?
- 18:08But to answer your question, which do I prefer?
- 18:14I don't know.
- 18:18I don't know.
- 18:19It depends on the year.
- 18:19You have to ask me every year.
- 18:22you seem to truly be a go with the flow, like whatever the competition gives me, whatever, whatever that year kind of pans out to be, I'm ready to go with whatever, whatever's on, whatever's asked of me.
- 18:36Yeah.
- 18:37I think that's a learned, a learned skill.
- 18:40I was not always like that.
- 18:42Um, I was young.
- 18:44I yelled at my judges.
- 18:47I said workouts were dumb because I wasn't good at them.
- 18:51right?
- 18:51I've, I've had the bad attitude.
- 18:53I've done it.
- 18:55And then I think a couple of things happen.
- 18:56You get more confident in your abilities.
- 18:59I know I can snatch if there's a little kid running around in front of me at the gym.
- 19:03Five years ago, I needed to have the exact same plate brand on either side.
- 19:08Everything had to be perfect because I was so bad at snatching that like nothing could be wrong with my situation.
- 19:13Right.
- 19:14Now I'm more confident in my ability.
- 19:15And so it's like, I don't need to be so worried about that.
- 19:17I trust myself.
- 19:19Um,
- 19:20And, you know, I just, I got older.
- 19:22Right.
- 19:23And I think that's what I loved about legends is that everyone was over that hump, right.
- 19:28Of feeling privileged and having everything, you know, handed to them.
- 19:33Not that everyone did.
- 19:34Right.
- 19:34But I'm just saying, you know, I think when you're, you know, maybe 20, right.
- 19:38You just don't see the whole picture.
- 19:41And I think everybody was kind of over that.
- 19:43And so there was a lot of like really good attitudes.
- 19:46Everyone was having fun, whether they lost or they won or,
- 19:49know so you know maybe a piece of equipment didn't you know work perfectly or whatever um so you know if now i'm you know part owner in a gym right we run comps i get how hard it is i'm not gonna complain about it you know um but it's learned it's definitely learned right i mean you still always see the the guy at the gym that needs the music on or he can't exercise right it's like you grow out of that i think
- 20:17Uh, Alexis, uh, jumps into the comment and says, my OCD makes it where I need same plates.
- 20:26Well, we're all different, right?
- 20:30Yeah.
- 20:30You know, I think, I think COVID shook us all a little bit too.
- 20:33It's like, you know, you might not have the same plates on both sides.
- 20:36You might, you're lucky to have some plates today, you know?
- 20:41And I mean, on top of that, I just love working out.
- 20:44I just, you know, I hear people that, oh, I've got burnt out and then I had to do this.
- 20:48I had to take a break.
- 20:49I've never felt that I don't get it.
- 20:51I don't relate to it.
- 20:52I've always loved exercise.
- 20:53Sometimes I just don't want to cycle a barbell for a while.
- 20:56I'm okay.
- 20:57I use a dumbbell or I go play soccer or I do something else.
- 20:59I go for a hike.
- 21:00You know, it's just, I've never felt like I have to do anything and, and I'm forcing myself.
- 21:07Um, and there's just, there's so many ways to exercise that I just, I don't know.
- 21:13I don't, I don't get that, I guess.
- 21:16I used to be a same plate on each side guy.
- 21:19And then the gym I moved to had like weights set up in.
- 21:25So when COVID came, we had lanes and every lane had everything you needed in your lane.
- 21:31And there you just took what you got, right?
- 21:33But at least you were able to work out.
- 21:35And I think like it made you appreciate that at least I get to do this, right?
- 21:40And it doesn't have to be perfect anymore.
- 21:43Yeah.
- 21:44And I think you surround yourself with the right people who call you out on that stuff.
- 21:46Like get over yourself, put the plate on, you know, you know, and if you have your, like, you know, your things that make you lift better and you want to, you know, you need the same plates.
- 21:57Like, no, I'm not, I'm not judging that Alexis, but you know, I just, I just think, you know, when I've, when I've had a bad attitude, I've almost always had someone there who trains with me being like, did you just yell at that guy?
- 22:08Like go back over there.
- 22:09Absolutely not.
- 22:10This is not,
- 22:11this is not who you're going to be.
- 22:13No.
- 22:13And, you know, and so I think that's, that's important to, you know, being, being in a gym for me has done that.
- 22:20You know, and a lot of people work out, you know, work out in their home gym and stuff.
- 22:24And that's, that's fine too.
- 22:25But for me, I just, I've gotten so much value out of being around people who hold me accountable for things like that.
- 22:32Before we dive into the competition-specific stuff, I do want to dive into a little bit of your personal life because Lex brings up again, love that you have the balance and you work and have a family and own a gym.
- 22:48Talk about having to go with the flow.
- 22:50You were on an adoption journey recently.
- 22:54you thought one thing was coming, you get another thing.
- 22:58Like life throws things at you and you have to like adapt in the moment.
- 23:02Can you walk us through what that was like to think you're getting a girl or a boy and you get a girl?
- 23:10Yeah.
- 23:11Yeah.
- 23:12Well, it even starts before that actually.
- 23:14Um, so, um, my family and I decided to, to foster a baby, um, probably a year and a half ago now.
- 23:23Um,
- 23:24And of course, like when someone hands you a baby, I wanted that baby.
- 23:26I wanted that baby to be my baby.
- 23:28And about six weeks later, they found another home for that baby.
- 23:33And then flash forward, maybe two months, they placed us with another baby.
- 23:38This one had high medical needs.
- 23:41And that baby stayed with us for about seven months.
- 23:45And then about three months after that, we did have a birth mother contact us about adopting their baby.
- 23:52So
- 23:54I, uh, we have had three infants within the span of one year.
- 23:57So I thought I knew what sleep deprivation is, but when it lasts a year, I do not think I ever had any concept.
- 24:07Um,
- 24:09when it comes to competition, I always thought I'm going to go individual, um, regular division until my joints tell me you need to be in the master's division.
- 24:17Um, and then I fostered two children and adopted a baby.
- 24:21And I instantly felt like 30 years old in 30 years older in my whole body.
- 24:28And I was like, Oh my gosh, I understand now why they created this division.
- 24:32Like,
- 24:33the person that I am coming to a competition as is not the same person physically as one year ago.
- 24:39I mean, I think there will be both long-term and short-term effects of having a baby at all.
- 24:47And I didn't even birth the baby, so I can only imagine if somebody's done that.
- 24:52So yeah, so we were placed with this child for adoption.
- 24:58We were in the hospital for her birth.
- 25:04ultrasound said it was a boy and then they said, Oh, it's a very pretty girl.
- 25:09Right.
- 25:09When she came out, we were like, okay, we have a girl now.
- 25:13Um, I don't know.
- 25:16It's been fun.
- 25:16Uh, you know, our, our foster kids were both boys, so it's been fun to, you know, feel like this is a brand new journey, um, a little bit.
- 25:25Um, but yeah, I mean, going with the flow has been the last whole year, not just this baby, right.
- 25:31It's been,
- 25:32This baby might be mine forever.
- 25:33It's not.
- 25:34This baby might be mine forever.
- 25:35It's not.
- 25:37This baby might be a boy.
- 25:38It's a girl.
- 25:38I mean, these are huge life changes.
- 25:40So yeah, I think that's probably been part of the lessons learned too.
- 25:45Hopefully they apply elsewhere.
- 25:47Corey Leonard says kids are absolutely game changers.
- 25:50They are.
- 25:51They are.
- 25:52You hear it.
- 25:53And then when it happens, it's like, oh, okay.
- 25:54I understand what they were describing now.
- 25:56Yeah.
- 25:57This is different.
- 25:59So I think it's safe to say that Legends is the biggest win you've had in your career.
- 26:07And you do that in the same year that you have all this personal stuff happening in a really cool way.
- 26:14And you made a couple posts about how happy you were that your girls were there to support you.
- 26:22So what did all of that mean in that process?
- 26:27Yeah.
- 26:28Um, I think, I mean, I think one thing that I learned is that I think the more you let go of some things, all of a sudden it's like, success has just come at you.
- 26:36Right.
- 26:37It's like, I think there's like a power in caring less a little bit.
- 26:42Right.
- 26:42Like I think, you know, I, I came into that competition thinking, yeah, we'll just kind of try my hardest every workout.
- 26:50Right.
- 26:50There were some people in other lanes that were like,
- 26:53that was so fun going back and forth with you in that workout i mean i kind of was like didn't want to hurt their feelings that was kind of like i had no were we i don't i just went as hard as i could and i had tunnel vision and i had a good time and i didn't know we were like fighting for first there or whatever i just like was doing my thing um and you know i don't think that's how i approached things before this competition i think i just was like i'll try to beat that one girl or you know everything was so calculated um and i wonder if that maybe wasn't a blessing for me a little bit
- 27:23And then, yeah, having my girls there.
- 27:24I mean, I think that you're lying to yourself if you think that you only do this just for yourself, right?
- 27:29Like I think outside acknowledgement is like, we have to admit it's so important to us.
- 27:34Like if my gym and my members are proud of me or like think it's so cool that, you know, I do the programming for them and I just won that, like that means a lot to me.
- 27:43And I can't pretend that it's just like me feeling good about myself and I do this to prove this to myself.
- 27:48It's to prove it to other people too, I think.
- 27:50You know, I want, you know, I think I want,
- 27:53you know, my, my family to think it's really cool and to see me work hard and, you know, and see me, you know, fight up from a low placement and not give up.
- 28:02And, um, yeah, it was really special.
- 28:07You say you didn't notice the people besides you.
- 28:12Did you notice your family in front of you at the end of the lane?
- 28:15I wish I could say I did, but when I say tunnel vision, it was severe.
- 28:21especially in that lunge workout, man, I don't even know if I knew my name after that one, but I did look for them after I looked for them after and they were just, it's, it's cute to see a little baby recognize you.
- 28:35It's really cute.
- 28:35She got excited and clapped.
- 28:39So, so that's something I've never asked Jamie.
- 28:41Like, do you notice your family at the end of the lane, your friends?
- 28:49I hear Ronica very clearly.
- 28:53But she's loud.
- 28:55I rarely hear Aaron.
- 28:57He can be hard to hear.
- 28:58And he's not at everything.
- 29:03And then there's times where I'm like, I like kind of like blackout and just like, it's like more bump, you know, like, you're like, you're like, literally, like going too hard that you can't quite, um,
- 29:16But yeah, I see them during certain things, especially in workouts that like in jump, I like was watching them.
- 29:22I knew what I was looking at in jump, but like, it depends on the workout.
- 29:26It depends on how hard I'm like hurting or when I'm struggling, it's hard.
- 29:31Um, when I'm doing good, I feel like I can look for them.
- 29:33I think it's a moment before and the moment after, right?
- 29:37You look up, you see they're there and you're like, oh, I got it.
- 29:39They're watching.
- 29:39Gotta go hard.
- 29:41Right.
- 29:44Yeah, during jump, I think Ronica punched me at least 37 times, especially when you were doing the heavy double unders.
- 29:50Wow.
- 29:52What is she doing?
- 29:54What is she doing?
- 29:54Got a little flustered there.
- 29:57Yeah, that was a disaster.
- 30:00Things happen.
- 30:03All right.
- 30:03So I want to touch on one more thing before we get to the event.
- 30:07And that is when I look at your Instagram, there's many fishing pictures as there are CrossFit pictures.
- 30:15Yep.
- 30:15Fishing and fitness are closely tied for me.
- 30:18Closely tied.
- 30:19What does fishing mean to you and what does it do for you?
- 30:24Yeah, two things.
- 30:27One, I had a friend at one point tell me that I was miserable to be around unless I
- 30:32one exercise and to spend at least an hour outside every week.
- 30:36And she basically gave me the advice of you need to, you need to allocate this time for yourself every week.
- 30:42Some, so just being outside, I think being by myself and being outside.
- 30:45So those are probably the two things, right?
- 30:48Being outside in nature, I grew up in Minnesota, which is close to Canada.
- 30:51I heard that you're a Canada bias show.
- 30:55So I feel like that's pretty close.
- 30:56Um,
- 30:57We don't think that our listeners.
- 31:01I don't deny it.
- 31:02I just, I grew up always being outside.
- 31:03Right.
- 31:04And so I think it kind of, you know, it makes me feel like a little kid again and just kind of calms me down and gets me some sun.
- 31:09Right.
- 31:10And then it gives me my alone time too, which I think is just important for everyone, no matter how you do it.
- 31:15Right.
- 31:15And it's especially more challenging as you have children to, to make sure you cut out that time for yourself.
- 31:20So I think it does those two things to me.
- 31:22Plus fly fishing is really good for people who have no chill and
- 31:27Um, and I am one of those people.
- 31:29So it's nice.
- 31:31There's no, it's not like a bobber and you sit there, you're always changing, always moving, always doing something new, paying attention to stuff.
- 31:37So it's good, good activity for me.
- 31:41What is your greatest fishing achievement?
- 31:45Oh, okay.
- 31:46Um, there is this event called the flyathlon.
- 31:49You should look it up.
- 31:49Um, it is a hybrid of a running race and a fishing race.
- 31:55And, um,
- 31:56They're like different distances you can choose, right?
- 31:58So if there's like a half marathon, you run the half marathon trail, and then there's little beaver ponds along the whole route.
- 32:04And at some point in the race, you have to climb down to the beaver ponds, catch a fish, and then put your rod back up and run with your rod for the rest of the time.
- 32:12And depending on what breed of fish you catch, you get a certain amount of minutes off your time.
- 32:18And winning the flyathlon was maybe my best fishing achievement.
- 32:23It was perfect.
- 32:24It like brought all my worlds together into one.
- 32:26sport uh you know it was a fundraiser for conservation but man that was probably the best day of my whole life as an adult too it was super fun that's cool if if you podiumed at the crossfit games as a master's athlete which which would rank higher the flyathlon or the games i think the crossfit games is a much bigger event
- 32:52than uh running and fishing against about 10 other people in the woods but um but it was it was a very fun moment for me that's awesome all right so now we'll go back to legends and um i'm gonna turn over to jamie a little bit and let her kind of walk through some of the events um she did them you did them so she has a better understanding as to what was happening there and i'll let her kind of take this over
- 33:19Well, we've talked about you started with the swimming, not necessarily your strong suit.
- 33:26That one was really hard.
- 33:27I don't know about for you, but for me to like know at all.
- 33:32Like you talked about the other ones, like not necessarily knowing where someone's at.
- 33:35That one was really hard to see where people were at.
- 33:37So that's like you just kind of get in the water and do your thing and figure out.
- 33:42Is that how you felt?
- 33:44Yeah.
- 33:44Yeah.
- 33:45And, and, you know, as I was telling you before, I'm kind of a tunnel vision person anyway, so I'm not sure I even want to notice the only time you could really see if somebody was like right in front of you.
- 33:53Right.
- 33:53And so at the very end, you know, the last length, I did see a couple of people like kind of coming up on me, um,
- 34:00And so I, you know, I did my best to sprint.
- 34:02That was the only time I saw anyone.
- 34:03I don't think I caught either of them.
- 34:05So, you know, whatever, at least I tried.
- 34:08There's nothing worse than just being like, you know, outrun by somebody in the last couple seconds.
- 34:13Right.
- 34:13So I had to do my best, but I think it was a little too late at that point.
- 34:17Yeah.
- 34:18I liked the swim.
- 34:20Like it was nice to do something other than just swim.
- 34:24I liked getting out of the pool.
- 34:27It was an interesting event.
- 34:28Um, I think dumbbell speed played a part and transition speed played a part.
- 34:34Um, but you obviously had to be comfortable in the water to do fairly well in that workout.
- 34:41Do you, do you swim like for training?
- 34:45You know, when I was training, um, individually and a little bit more intensely, um,
- 34:50I did swim once a week.
- 34:52I would say I got more comfortable in the water, but I still was never good at it.
- 34:57But being comfortable in the water is half the battle, right?
- 34:58I mean, at least knowing how fast you should go.
- 35:02But the rec center I go to, they wouldn't allow a dumbbell in.
- 35:07you can't dive that was kind of an interesting thing to have to do again uh so it was i mean it was i thought it was cool to show up and be like well i've never tried anything like this this is kind of cool you know i did one dumbbell workout in the pool when they told us it was swimming i went you know i went a few times just to kind of make sure brush the dust off a little bit and i did bring a dumbbell once um and and so i kind of understood that you had to take a second before you dive in right that kind of thing if you dive too far you're all of a sudden haven't been breathing for that whole length right so it has to be a short dive so
- 35:35I had a couple, you know, things up my sleeve, but I mean, it's still just totally fell apart into some kind of a backstroke situation, but you know, I got through it and I think I finished maybe 12th in that.
- 35:47And does that sound right?
- 35:49And, and that was pretty good for me to be honest.
- 35:52No problem.
- 35:55So not, not the belly flop style.
- 35:58Not the belly flop, but, um, but I, I did that one of the girls to, um,
- 36:06to do a cannonball, and she did execute in her last round.
- 36:09Kristen, so big shout out to Kristen for being the fun of the whole event.
- 36:15That's awesome.
- 36:17She didn't call it out, though.
- 36:18I feel like you have to yell cannonball before you cannonball.
- 36:20Yeah.
- 36:21That was a little bit disappointing, but she still did it.
- 36:24Oh, that's awesome.
- 36:26I must've been like cooling down or I don't know.
- 36:28Cause I, yeah.
- 36:31She wasn't in my heat, but she did.
- 36:32She looked, she looked like left, right.
- 36:35And I think noticed that she wasn't going to do well in it and just get involved in on her last one.
- 36:39That's fantastic.
- 36:41That is something our listener Corey Leonard would do in a heartbeat.
- 36:44I know it.
- 36:46Yeah, that's great.
- 36:49Okay.
- 36:50So then we go inside and we do the lifts.
- 36:53I know.
- 36:55I know for me, like the warm up area wasn't like spectacular.
- 36:59There wasn't a whole lot of room.
- 37:01Yeah.
- 37:04Federal law states you have to yell cannonball mid-leap.
- 37:07Exactly, I'll notify her.
- 37:11Tough, kind of tough one to warm up for, which is,
- 37:14that's always kind of been one of my things.
- 37:15Like, I don't even know if it's appropriate to program one reps at stuff like this when it isn't like an ideal situation to go out and do, especially for like those 60 plus year olds.
- 37:26Like, and so that's just always been like a thing of mine for these comps, but it is what it is.
- 37:32We went out there and did them.
- 37:33Um, how were your lifts like for you?
- 37:36Like any, a PR that day or anything?
- 37:40Definitely not a PR.
- 37:42No.
- 37:42You know, I'd messed with the list before I left.
- 37:44I knew I was on the weaker side for myself right now, which is already starting at kind of a low baseline.
- 37:49So, you know, I think this is not an excuse for my lifts.
- 37:54I actually, I think I executed what I could do in that moment, but I had, I did have COVID the week before the week before legends.
- 38:05And I was real on the fence about going and I tested negative about four days prior to
- 38:10And kind of rallied for maybe two like awful workouts right before I left.
- 38:15And I was like, let's just see, I'm just going to go and let's just see.
- 38:18So it kind of worked out perfectly that the swim, which is a weakness of mine and the lift, which is a weakness of mine was the first day, which is the only day I wasn't feeling awesome still.
- 38:26Um, and then I felt fine the rest of the weekend.
- 38:27Like I woke up the next morning, I felt fine.
- 38:28And I was like, well, this couldn't work out better.
- 38:31Um, so I don't think it really affected my performance, um, except that I hadn't worked out much.
- 38:36So I was getting way sore than I should have.
- 38:39And I was really sore after that swim workout.
- 38:41Like my quads just from the dumbbell, um, we're like, we're like kind of like cramping up.
- 38:46Um, I am not a power cleaner.
- 38:48I'm a squatter.
- 38:49Everything's I squat my deadlifts.
- 38:50I squat everything.
- 38:51Um, Hmm.
- 38:52and i went out there and power cleaned and jerked and i was like what is happening to my body um so it was it was kind of weird for me but i ended up hitting probably ish what my maxes were i'm sure i could have rallied for five more pounds you know on either if i warmed up better you know to your point i think i warmed up maybe too early because
- 39:12I was afraid I wouldn't get the equipment.
- 39:14You see a bar that's light and you're like, I better get it in now.
- 39:21Between that and my quads being sore, I was like, this is what it's going to be right now.
- 39:26My lifetime maxes are probably only
- 39:2910 pounds more than both of those lifts anyway.
- 39:31So what would 20 pounds more have really done in the grand scheme of things for some of the numbers those girls were putting up.
- 39:38So I probably placed where I should, what should have placed, which was fairly low.
- 39:43You know, I think that the advantage we had, you know, both you and I had in this comp is that, um, that was a 100 point, um, you know, score for two lifts.
- 39:53Right.
- 39:54Um, and Bob said, you know, it's going to be, it's going to be combined score a hundred.
- 39:58um for pounds um but if you had made if he had made it two different scores it just would have been 50 points anyway so i'm not sure it would have changed the leaderboard really much um so that was a benefit for me you know i got all the lifts out of the way and it was only one you know one score so you know um but if you you know if you look into the next the next morning thinking that all right i gotta call my babe back up you know started first day in 18th place like
- 40:26All right.
- 40:26Let's see if the points are there.
- 40:27And then we start with that.
- 40:30The farmer's carry workout.
- 40:34The double dumbbell.
- 40:34Yep.
- 40:36I gave my whole entire soul to that workout and it moved me from 18th to 17th place.
- 40:43So at that point, like the discouragement was real.
- 40:46I was like, I don't, I don't know.
- 40:49that effort was not worth that jump.
- 40:51Um, and that's when I started looking into the scoring and realizing, okay, you know, I got seventh on that, um, but tried very hard to get that seventh place and just destroyed my grip for the whole weekend.
- 41:03Um, but then I realized, well, if I had gotten six, right, the scoring jump was pretty big.
- 41:09So basically the top six were awarded a lot more.
- 41:12Um, and then seventh down to, I think it was like 11th or something or seventh down to 20th or something.
- 41:18You know, it was like the next tier down of points.
- 41:21And then basically the bottom half, it was only like a one point difference between scores.
- 41:26So that's when I realized, OK, I either have to like hold back on these or go for it 100 percent.
- 41:33But luckily, what was left were all workouts I liked.
- 41:35So I basically just hold on.
- 41:38Did you hold on to them unbroken?
- 41:40I held on to them unbroken.
- 41:41Yeah.
- 41:43there were some borderline reps that I almost can't believe they even counted because my forearms were like seizing to the point where I couldn't open them anymore.
- 41:50And I was like, I'm not sure if this is going to count as extending my arm.
- 41:53They were like cramping up.
- 41:56Uh, yeah, it got very close, but I, I did do it, but somehow, um, somehow six girls managed to do it faster than me.
- 42:02So how much more I could do in that one.
- 42:07Yeah.
- 42:07Grip after that one was, I like, I like couldn't even sign Mike's scorecard.
- 42:11That was, I was like, I had no pressure.
- 42:14Yeah.
- 42:15I really put myself in a bad spot for the rest of the weekend.
- 42:18Do you think that Bob thought that we would all be doing that on broken?
- 42:24Not all, but no, at least half.
- 42:26Oh,
- 42:28I don't know if they saw a half.
- 42:30I, I mean, I think that they maybe only thought top five or so in, in, in a, I mean, especially like maybe in your, in the 35, 39, maybe 10.
- 42:41Um, but I don't even know.
- 42:44I don't even think that many did like, um,
- 42:49No.
- 42:51Even the heats before me, I watched and everyone was just holding on.
- 42:53I was like, that is not the way I thought this was going to go.
- 42:56I wonder if Bob thought it was going to go this way.
- 43:00Maybe in the 35 to 39, but I think when you got to 40 and started moving up, I think only the top four or five in the heats did.
- 43:12Yeah.
- 43:13It was only the top heat and it was only a couple people
- 43:17there were a lot of people dropping in devil's press in the earlier heats.
- 43:22I mean, I don't mind a devil's press.
- 43:24I wonder if maybe, maybe that wasn't the smartest choice for me to try to go over working on that for a seventh place finish, you know, but hindsight's 2020.
- 43:34So, well, did it impact you for the rope climbs?
- 43:40Yeah.
- 43:41Yeah.
- 43:41So I placed well on that one, but I might've even maybe wanted or got top three or something, but third, third,
- 43:48So I place well.
- 43:50And rope climbs are not a strength of mine.
- 43:51I'm very short.
- 43:53I'm not very, usually very strong in the descent.
- 43:57That's something I've been practicing.
- 43:59But I always feel like people can somehow do it way faster than me.
- 44:05But yeah, it worked out for me.
- 44:06I'm very comfortable with any kind of rope, any length, any weight.
- 44:11We have drag ropes.
- 44:12We have beaded dubs in my gym.
- 44:13We do it all the time.
- 44:16So I was comfortable with that.
- 44:17And I think that, I think it got people a little more than I thought it would.
- 44:23So maybe it was like a little bit less about the rope climbs at the end of the day.
- 44:26But oh man, was I hurting.
- 44:28And the next day, I mean, it was like the whole weekend was a lot of grip.
- 44:33Yeah.
- 44:35I agree.
- 44:36A lot of squatting, too.
- 44:37It was a lot of squatting.
- 44:39A lot of squatting, but a lot of light squatting.
- 44:42I feel like our quads were hopefully trained for that.
- 44:47I don't know if I've ever trained for that.
- 44:5140 squat cleans at 155 is not 30, right?
- 44:52Or light.
- 44:52Was it 30?
- 44:53It was 40.
- 44:55Adam, 245.
- 45:02I was just happy to do singles on something for once in the weekend instead of having to hold on so much.
- 45:18I thought to myself maybe neutral to grip would feel better on the rope, but then it's like, no, because we were neutral to grip on the dumbbells and it was kind of just relentless on the grip.
- 45:26Yeah, we got through it.
- 45:27Yeah, that one was short enough.
- 45:30that I'd feel like my grip didn't, didn't start screaming at me till I was done.
- 45:36Yeah.
- 45:37I think it started to hurt really right when you finished.
- 45:39I agree.
- 45:41Yeah.
- 45:42Yeah.
- 45:42Now that I think the last, the last workout, if you talk about legs, I only ever felt my legs seize like that mid workout and like not be able to jump over a bar and burpee over the bar.
- 45:55It was awesome.
- 45:56It was awesome because it was like debilitating with no, like it was still a hundred percent safe, but still debilitating.
- 46:03Like it wasn't, you didn't put us in like a dangerous spot or anything like that.
- 46:06Right.
- 46:07But it was just funny.
- 46:08Just legs giving out.
- 46:09I thought it was hilarious.
- 46:11Very painful.
- 46:14Well, before we get to the final day, you got you get to Saturday.
- 46:18That was your absolute best day.
- 46:19A second and a first to do like some true CrossFit, the bar muscle ups and cycling the barbell light.
- 46:29That was a good workout.
- 46:30But again, grippy.
- 46:32Yeah.
- 46:33Grippy again.
- 46:33I did not think I was gonna be able to hold onto that and broken, which I didn't.
- 46:36Um, but I saw, I saw easy Muhammad do it before and he, um, I, he did like maybe half of his workout with singles and still won that event.
- 46:44So I was like, okay, see, you can do it.
- 46:46You know, I think, you know, when at that point, the way all of our grip felt, I knew the bar muscles were going to get sketchy at the end, even though it's really not that high volume.
- 46:54I think it was like maybe 30, maybe not even, um,
- 46:58You know, which I think for all the athletes that were there, like normally no workout would be fine.
- 47:03But even for me, I was like slipping off the top in the last few reps.
- 47:07I think I had.
- 47:15So we lost Megan for a second.
- 47:22It's almost like her phone died.
- 47:24Or she's getting a call.
- 47:27Yeah, a call usually doesn't take this long.
- 47:30But anyway, it's weird because your grip must have recovered faster than most because a lot of the athletes we've talked to in the last couple days talk about how their grip went, and you didn't have that problem.
- 47:48Is it something that you train more, or do you think you figured out the recovery aspect of that?
- 47:56Oh, that's a good question.
- 47:57I, I didn't even honestly, I mean, I have my gun and I like a scraper and I kind of like to scrape my forearms after stuff like that.
- 48:06Um, but I, I heard a lot of people went and like put their arms in the ice bath, that kind of stuff.
- 48:11I didn't do any of that.
- 48:12I, I was more worried about, there she is.
- 48:15Sorry about that.
- 48:17Computer glitch there.
- 48:18Okay.
- 48:19No problem.
- 48:20Um,
- 48:21So yeah, you cut out just as you were saying, you were slipping a little bit down the top, um, but you were able to hang on and kind of get through the bar muscle ups.
- 48:32Uh, yeah.
- 48:32So I met where I, I, you know, I did look left, right.
- 48:36Which is always dangerous for me and realized I had, I probably had on the last round, um, a moment if I could have held on unbroken and jumped right on the bar, I probably could have taken first.
- 48:48And I just knew I didn't trust my grip.
- 48:50And I was like, it's going to have to be second on this one.
- 48:52And I just slowed down to make sure I did it.
- 48:54Way rather have second than like it's six because I get no rep or something.
- 49:00And then you move into the event that you win.
- 49:09Yes.
- 49:10So that one, which one was that?
- 49:12That second one.
- 49:13Buckling handstand walk.
- 49:15Buckling handstand walk.
- 49:16Yeah.
- 49:16So that was surprising considering...
- 49:19some of the, I think somebody did like a 230 or 240 clean and jerk.
- 49:23So I was like, they're going to touch and go this, this is going to make me look stupid.
- 49:28Um, and I was, I was surprised that the handstand walking kind of caught up to them a little bit.
- 49:33They still were all in the bar than me.
- 49:35Um, just not fast enough to make up for it.
- 49:37I think it was the great equalizer for sure.
- 49:41I, they just weren't fast enough and they had to like stop and rest.
- 49:47Yeah.
- 49:47Yeah.
- 49:48And I think I'm pretty comfortable kicking right up.
- 49:50So, I mean, I was, I was okay being a little hypoxic and still handstand walking, but yeah, that bar was like a little nerve wracking for me, but I don't know.
- 49:57It worked out.
- 49:58I was a big surprise.
- 49:59I was, I was psyched about that one.
- 50:01Yeah.
- 50:01You crushed that one.
- 50:04Then you go into the last day.
- 50:05Did you leaderboard watch to see like where you were, what you had to do at that moment?
- 50:11And I guess the other question is at what point did you realize you had a shot at winning this?
- 50:18Uh, points wise, I didn't have a shot going into the last day.
- 50:22Um, basically I looked at, I looked at where Amanda Norton was at and her point spread was pretty decent.
- 50:28Not like locked in, but you know, I looked at it and I was like, I don't know for me to even get on the, like stay on the podium.
- 50:36I would have to get like, I'd have to get top six for sure on both workouts and both parts.
- 50:41And she'd have to get like below 10th and she's been consistently
- 50:45hanging around six for every workout.
- 50:48So I was like, I just don't see her.
- 50:49I mean, she looks great.
- 50:50She doesn't seem fatigued.
- 50:52Like that would be such a weird situation.
- 50:55And then sure enough, we go into that one.
- 50:57I get fourth and fifth and she gets 10th and 12th.
- 51:01I was like, that is the exact thing that had to happen.
- 51:05And I didn't expect it.
- 51:06And I had, uh, I don't know if this was like based on where, you know, where I was placed at the time or if it was just random, but I ended up having the first lane.
- 51:14So facing away from everyone.
- 51:15So I had my back to everyone.
- 51:17I had no idea how I was doing.
- 51:19There were a couple friends that were, you know, close to me in the crowd that would kind of be like, oh, I think you're doing okay.
- 51:24I think maybe, I don't know.
- 51:26Like, I think you're probably still up there.
- 51:27Like no one could really tell, right?
- 51:28There were such short sets back and forth.
- 51:31So, you know, based on what I knew the points, you know, how I knew the points,
- 51:36were allocated.
- 51:37I knew that it was much better to do really good.
- 51:41And then maybe sacrifice one versus right.
- 51:44Just trying to get, you know, 10th and 10th or something.
- 51:46Right.
- 51:47I knew I had to get a top six score.
- 51:48So for me, I love burpees.
- 51:52I do empty barbell thrusters all the time.
- 51:54And that weight was pretty similar.
- 51:55So I was like, okay, I think I know how this is going to feel.
- 51:58I think I would rather go hard on that one.
- 52:00So in my mind,
- 52:02my plan was just be comfortable in the first part, save my, you know, place myself.
- 52:07Okay.
- 52:08And then go for it on the second part.
- 52:09Cause everyone else will be tired.
- 52:11Um, and then the friend that I had sitting in the crowd, you know, said, I think you should go for it.
- 52:16You know, kind of halfway through that first part, she's like, I think you're placed.
- 52:20Okay.
- 52:20Like keep going for it.
- 52:21Like switch your plan.
- 52:23you know, start going for this one.
- 52:25So, so I did that and I was not okay going into the second workout.
- 52:30Um, and I was actually surprised by my placement because that for me should have been, I wanted to be the, you know, one of the only ones that finished that part.
- 52:37It didn't finish it.
- 52:39Um, you know, usually I'm a lot faster at burpees than everyone.
- 52:41And I could barely, I had to step over the bar, which I've never done.
- 52:45I think maybe ever in my life.
- 52:46And it was, it was borderline embarrassing, but then the placement ended up being okay.
- 52:52So
- 52:54I guess it worked out for me that I tried so hard on that first one.
- 52:59So what does a win like this mean to you when you look at what you're capable of going forward?
- 53:08Yeah, I mean, I think you place well, especially when it's not an expectation.
- 53:14It's kind of lights the fire again, right?
- 53:18Um, you know, this is a brand new division for me, you know, maybe I have a future in this division, you know, and, you know, where I thought I was getting left in the dust and maybe some of the other divisions, like maybe this is a new start for me.
- 53:29Um, it definitely, you know, exposed me in the, in the places I thought it would, you know, it showed me what I would have to work on, but also kind of showed me I can hang with some of these, you know, some of these ladies.
- 53:39Um, so, you know, I think as I've shifted my training in the last couple of years, you know, I was a big
- 53:47I followed Invictus for many, many years, sometimes with a crew, sometimes by myself.
- 53:52And I've shifted to a new kind of a new model, trying to get all the competitive athletes to be doing the classes in our gym.
- 54:02So to program different levels such that the highest level is
- 54:07you know, some kind of a semifinal athlete, you know, really heavy, higher, higher, maybe more reps, sometimes heavier.
- 54:12And then, you know, a level one being like a scaled and then everything in between so that you can still be working out with your friends, but still be training for the games.
- 54:22we only have an hour at a time, right?
- 54:23So we put a couple extra sessions in there.
- 54:26So if you want to do a double day or you want a second lift or drills or something, we've plugged that in.
- 54:32And so for me, this was a cool test that it is working, doing this in the class setting and being part of a group and having fun with my friends.
- 54:41I'm like, worst case, it doesn't work.
- 54:44I'm still fit.
- 54:45I still look good.
- 54:45And I got to be with my friends
- 54:48you know, and my business is doing well, right?
- 54:50So I'm like, what I really have to lose trying this, this strategy.
- 54:53And I think it's, you know, it's shown that it's, it is, you know, it is a style, you know, that you can, you can program that if you want to be competitive, and do classes in a gym, and your programmer is up for putting in a little extra work, it's possible.
- 55:08So you write all the own programming?
- 55:12Yeah, so a group of three of us do the programming for the whole gym.
- 55:18We each have our own biases, so we make sure we have a team calling ourselves out on it a little bit.
- 55:24And I think when it morphs a little bit, it's easier to do your own programming.
- 55:27Sometimes if you write something terrible, it's hard to do it because you know how it's going to feel, right?
- 55:31And so when you have a group of people, I think like fudging it a little bit and then a coach that's not me presenting it, it feels like a whole new workout, you know, once you come to class.
- 55:41That's cool.
- 55:44So my question was in this rollercoaster year of emotions, you become a mom, how much doubt crept in with the sleep deprivation, with the new responsibilities, with all of that, and then to come to an event like this and win, like, I can't imagine the ebb and flow that that would be for an individual.
- 56:09Yeah.
- 56:10That's a roller coaster.
- 56:11It was definitely a roller coaster.
- 56:13Um, I think that when you try something new, like, you know, like the, you know, starting to do class instead of starting to do a, instead of doing, you know, something with a little more personalization, um, or something meant for competitors, I think there was already like a little bit of doubt there.
- 56:27I think that there were people maybe in my gym questioning it a little bit too.
- 56:30Is this really working?
- 56:32Um, is this what we should be doing?
- 56:34And, um,
- 56:36And so, yeah, I mean, the doubt was there.
- 56:38I mean, I knew with how sleep deprived I was and how my body felt, it wouldn't be safe for me to lift as much as heavy or as frequently as I was before.
- 56:46And so that's always scary.
- 56:47It's scary, not just for a max.
- 56:50It's scary for, you know, cycling a heavy bar.
- 56:52It's scary for doing something like a wall ball.
- 56:53Like if you're not squatting, heavy wall balls are pretty hard.
- 56:56They become hard, right?
- 56:57Yeah.
- 56:58you know, it's something like a heavy wobble or something.
- 56:59So it's like everything is related, you know?
- 57:02And so there, of course there was, um, there was a good amount of doubt.
- 57:06Um, but you know, I still, I've done, you know, I've done benchmark workouts just to make sure, you know, I've, I've invited people to my gym who I find to be a much higher caliber than me to see where I stand.
- 57:19Um, and so I don't, I don't think that my PR like my, my times or my placements were anything surprising, but, um,
- 57:30I shouldn't say my, I should say my times in my place, my times weren't surprising.
- 57:34My, the way that I felt each workout wasn't surprising.
- 57:37I just, I just wasn't sure where that would end me on the, on the leaderboard.
- 57:42And so to see that, okay, this is exactly the time I thought I was going to get, this is the time I got in the gym.
- 57:47This feels like this other workout I did in the gym.
- 57:50I'm just going to game it the same way.
- 57:51And then to have that end me top on the leaderboard, I guess it's just, it's reassuring.
- 57:55It's definitely reassuring.
- 57:59Well, this has been an awesome hour.
- 58:01It's been so much fun getting to know you.
- 58:04I'm so glad we're doing this series because the stories have been amazing and yours did not disappoint at all.
- 58:13We are definitely going to stay in touch throughout the season with all of these Masters athletes to kind of see where you guys end up in the next season.
- 58:21But I want to wish you good luck with everything being in one being a new mom as a parent.
- 58:26I know what that entails.
- 58:28to about your season.
- 58:30I hope you have an amazing season this coming year.
- 58:34Thank you so much.
- 58:35And thank you for, um, thank you for the exposure to that.
- 58:38You're giving masters athletes.
- 58:39I think it's, I mean, it's, it's my first interview, you know, it's, it's just so cool that, um, you know, to have somebody, you know, giving these women the attention that they deserve.
- 58:49I mean, it's, I mean, it just, um,
- 58:53I think it really shows gyms out there and, you know, you know, people over 35.
- 58:57I mean, you saw people over 50 doing handstand walking, doing bar muscle ups.
- 59:02I mean, we have to give masters athletes more credit.
- 59:05We can do it.
- 59:06We can do it.
- 59:07And you should, you should ask us to do it.
- 59:09So thank you so much for bringing that all to light.
- 59:12You're welcome.
- 59:12It's my pleasure.
- 59:13I always feel like I'm with my people when I'm at the Masters events and it's where I feel the most comfortable.
- 59:21So I'm 54 myself or I will be 54 in a week.
- 59:26So yeah, I love the Masters and we're going to continue to give them all the coverage.
- 59:31So with that, thank you everybody in the chat for participating.
- 59:35We love you all and we'll catch everybody next time on the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 59:41Bye guys.
