- 0:02This is an unspoiled network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering One Piece
- 0:12episodes three eighty five, three eighty six, and three eighty seven. Halfway
- 0:17across the Grand Line Arrival at the Red Line and he hates the One Piece
- 0:23crew, Iron Mask Duval makes his appearance, and three the fated Reunion Save
- 0:30the Captive Fishman. In these episodes, we meet a mermaid and although she
- 0:37does have a distinctly different vibe than what I expected, it's okate because she's
- 0:43accompanied by her friend slash Teacher, a starfish with a Rastafarian hat on,
- 0:51so you know, sure. Welcome to spoil Me. Welcome to the show
- 1:15everyone. I am Natasha. Thank you very much too. I believe it's
- 1:19Florian that commissioned this episode. Thank you Florian, and Florian is here in
- 1:25the chat listening to me whine and complain, and I appreciate you very much
- 1:30Florian for bearing with me on that this trio of episodes. First of all,
- 1:36we're on a new season, so to speak. This show doesn't really
- 1:40do like traditional seasons in that way, but according to the dropdown menus on
- 1:45here and on Hulu, it's a new season. And I know that there
- 1:51were some filler episodes before this one. I had been messaging with Florian and
- 1:56he said that they were some of his favorites. But I fully plan on
- 2:00watching them, like right after he and I talked about it, and then
- 2:05things did not go to plan, as is so often the case, so
- 2:07I haven't gotten a chance to see them yet. But I did see that
- 2:12our slow, slow Friend returns, and I'm definitely gonna go back and watch
- 2:15those. I have to. I have to watch those. And there was
- 2:19another chunk of filler episodes. I almost called them spoiler episodes ways back at
- 2:28this point, I believe before the thriller bark arc even began. So I'm
- 2:32planning on doing a day where I go back and just like let those roll.
- 2:38But these we start off in the like there's an episode that's really a
- 2:46lot less happens until the very very end. Most of what we get at
- 2:52the first half of the episode is everybody thinking about the red line and what
- 2:59it meant to them and what it was like to cross it. And we
- 3:01get a little bit of information about everybody else's situations as well, like we
- 3:07find out about the way that Frankie goes over it, where I think he
- 3:10says that he was a baby, but I'm just gonna like start the episode
- 3:16off. And the thing that I wanted to mention as well. I don't
- 3:23know how many of y'all have listened to the episode, but I covered the
- 3:28one piece movie that I guess is agreed to be like one of the better
- 3:31ones, which is Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island. And there is a
- 3:38moment in this episode where there are these like see snake shaped water currents.
- 3:47It's so strange, but they really really reminded me of the quote flower from
- 3:55baron Omatsuri's Secret Island, and I was just like, I don't need this
- 4:00imagery again right away. It was disturbing enough in that movie, I'll want
- 4:03to do this again. And thankfully it's it's not that similar, and of
- 4:08course the animation style is also pretty different, which helps keep it from being
- 4:13so unnerving looking, but it just evoked a really similar like vibe for a
- 4:20moment, and I was just like, no, we're not back here again,
- 4:23are we. So we have another moment yet again at the start of
- 4:31this episode, with Sanji imagining what a mermaid would look like, and of
- 4:39course the way he's imagining her is like pretty traditional in the way that we
- 4:43have seen them. She's got a purple tail, she's got a couple of
- 4:48seashell cups for her bra there's no straps or anything, they just like hold
- 4:55on and they are yellow. And she has giant ease and some sort of
- 5:01like you know, decorative necklace. And then she's got long wavy blonde hair
- 5:06down to her waist, and she's got a bracelet and earrings on, like
- 5:10she's really really decked out, right. But once we actually meet a mermaid
- 5:16here, and it's not the first mermaid we've ever met, but she is
- 5:23still very cute, but just an extremely different sort of energy to her design.
- 5:28And I kind of liked that that she manages to be like still like
- 5:33extremely cute, but she looks more like a normal human girl and not so
- 5:40like otherworldly glamorous or anything. She's even got like a T shirt on instead
- 5:45of you know, the seashell cups. And I'm wondering if that's like on
- 5:53purpose, if there is something specific that like Oda is trying to do with
- 5:58her, or if there's We're going to meet others and it's going to turn
- 6:01out that they all dress a similar way, or don't you know the guy
- 6:04that she's with, this will Starfish dude is apparently like a fashion designer or
- 6:09want to be, so maybe it's to do with that. But anyway,
- 6:15so all of our friends are at this point sitting on the railing of the
- 6:18ship and they're trying to fish because Lufy, as usual, is extremely hungry,
- 6:27and they see this massive school of fish that's like heading straight for them,
- 6:30and Nami is watching it and she's sort of like, I know this
- 6:34is supposed to be good, look but something about this just feels really really
- 6:39off to me. And the boat passes right over them, but none of
- 6:44the fish try and take a bite, or it seems more like they're fleeing
- 6:48than they are just swimming purposelessly. And then Nami looks up at the clouds
- 6:55and she sees these like really dark and she's you're kidding me, And I
- 7:01loved this piece of dialogue a lot us Up looks at her and says,
- 7:06don't just make a scary face and say foreboding things like that. Thank you
- 7:13us up hard agree like just the whole you're kidding me, without telling anybody
- 7:23else what's going on, ma'am, this isn't a Western recorded in nineteen sixty.
- 7:31Get to tell them what's happening for crying out loud. So all of
- 7:36a sudden, you see this like whirlpool develop and the camera pulls back and
- 7:42there's a bunch of them, and she says it's a sea snake current,
- 7:46to which Chopper says, okay, but what's that? And then all of
- 7:54a sudden, all of these sort of tentacle looking like spire of water begin
- 8:01to come up out of the surface of the ocean like they are cyclones almost,
- 8:09and it's I think that this is like actually something that can occur,
- 8:13not in not to this degree. You know, there's a scene at one
- 8:18point where we're looking at the ship from far away and they're surrounded by what
- 8:22looks like at least fifty of these And I don't mean quite like that,
- 8:26but I think that a ce spout, if I'm not mistaken, is what
- 8:30they're called. And it's when there's like kind of a combo of a wind
- 8:37and water current and it causes it to become airborne like this, and it's
- 8:41sort of like a visible tornado. So yeah, they're all looking at this
- 8:50and the of course instinct that they all have is like, okay, we
- 8:54can just fight this, and you know, at first, Sanji or a
- 9:00moment, it's just like I'll steer away from them, but he can't get
- 9:01the wheel to budge, which makes sense because these are extremely powerful currents.
- 9:09So the first one to jump in as usual is Zoro and he slices one
- 9:16of them. I do enjoy the sort of delayed reaction where he slices.
- 9:22He lands on the ship, there's a beat, and then all of a
- 9:24sudden, water powers all over him. Frankie's using like his shields and stuff,
- 9:30and there's all kinds of little attempts that they make to chop them in
- 9:37half and get cut them off of the pass. I want to say,
- 9:41but it's such a on the nose pun that I sort of resisted it.
- 9:45But you know what, I'm just going to lean into it, and for
- 9:50a moment it's sort of like, okay, yeah, we can defend ourselves
- 9:52against these things. While they are very big and scary, they are not
- 9:58living and so they don't come after us with the same like purposefulness or tactic
- 10:05that a live creature that's a predator would use. But as soon as they
- 10:11start to think, Okay, we're in the clear, we can get through
- 10:16this, Nami starts looking ahead because what Frankie proposes is using that ability of
- 10:24the ship to fly ahead, and I think that it's a maximum of one
- 10:28mile is as far as they can go if they go airborne. And when
- 10:35Nami tries to like foresee if that's going to be enough to get them in
- 10:41the clear, she sees it is not. That they are in the midst
- 10:45of this and there is nothing to be done. And it's honestly, like,
- 10:50I really enjoyed this part, just because we have met up with so
- 10:54many creatures, and we have met with so many bad guys that they're just
- 11:01being a sort of like naturally occurring phenomenon that they have to deal with.
- 11:05I really enjoyed this, you know, And it sort of reminds me a
- 11:09little bit of the Red Line and the fact that this is like a bizarre
- 11:16waterfall that they have to climb up and over. Like as far as I
- 11:20recall, the Red Line wasn't built by human beings. That's just a naturally
- 11:22occurring structure, if I'm remembering right. So they all start to panic,
- 11:30basically because Nami is just like there's no escape, and Brooke says, I'm
- 11:35going to go ahead and play some music and you guys can all sing along,
- 11:39and he starts to and all of a sudden, there's this huge like
- 11:43shove and they get thrown into the air by one of these and then the
- 11:50ship begins to fall. Chopper falls off the side, and Robin, using
- 11:56her like ability to make a bunch of arms inter linked, manages to catch
- 12:01him before he falls. You guys, I hated watching Chopper fall. I
- 12:05know he's going to be fine. I do not anticipate ever there being a
- 12:11moment where Chopper is not okay permanently, but it's just that free fall and
- 12:16he's so little, you know, and everybody else is like on the ship
- 12:20and fine. I don't know. I also wanted to mention here really really
- 12:28quick that we don't have like a full on change of costume for absolutely everybody,
- 12:35but we've definitely got some new vibes for a few of our friends.
- 12:39So Chopper is still in red shorts. I can't remember if his are the
- 12:43like he's usually only in shorts if I remember correctly, So I don't think
- 12:50that's really changed. But we have an outfit for Nico Robin and I don't
- 12:58know. I was about to her Nikki and I, you guys know,
- 13:01I don't know what happens with me. But her name just like doesn't want
- 13:05to wedge itself in my brain. And I don't know why that is.
- 13:09But she is wearing this sort of I want to call it almost a Saturday
- 13:15night fever vibe because it's a very popped collar and it's sleeveless and v neck,
- 13:24but it's got a very disco sort of look to it, and it's
- 13:31that's the top. And then she's got a pair of like hip hugger bell
- 13:35bottoms that are the same color, with a very low slung belt and what
- 13:41looks like a belly chain as well. So you could really take your pick
- 13:48here on whether or not this is straight up disco or if this is a
- 13:52sort of like disco referenced nineties outfit. Actually, Rankie is wearing a purple
- 14:01shirt with I with a pattern all over it that I don't know if those
- 14:05are supposed to be gears or if they're supposed to be anything. In particular,
- 14:11Nami's outfit I believe is different, so or it's got a black,
- 14:15a red and white striped shirt. Sangie's got a green shirt with a blue
- 14:20and white striped tie. Lufy's got a blue vest. I think his vest
- 14:26had been red, And you know, I'm not sure whether or not.
- 14:31There's always a costume change every single season for everybody, but Nami has and
- 14:37it was hard for me to catch it because for a lot of this episode,
- 14:41we're pretty up close on people, you know what I mean, Like
- 14:46she I don't think it really sank in for me how different her costume was
- 14:50until a little bit later. But there is a point at which she's in
- 14:54an orange flowered top and a beat a yellow beaded necklace, and all of
- 15:03our friends are looking over and they see the red line and are thinking back
- 15:11to the moments where they decided to go to the Grand Line and team up
- 15:18together and what their goals were going to be, and it's just a sort
- 15:22of flashback moment, and I do enjoy that everybody is sort of reminiscing about,
- 15:26like how much they've grown and how even though technically not that much time
- 15:31it has passed, it just feels like it's been ages. And that's so
- 15:35like time is such a bizarre thing, because there will be moments where you're
- 15:41like, wow, was that only five years ago? That feels like and
- 15:43you guys know what I'm talking about, especially the pandemic I think fucked up
- 15:48our perspective of time. So there would be like a news cycle that would
- 15:54happen of a particular story, and then like three weeks later, somebody would
- 15:58be like, hey, do you guys all remember like a year ago when
- 16:03such and such happened? Except that was literally four weeks ago, and that
- 16:08it was very like helpful to me to see that other people were experiencing the
- 16:14same thing, because I can being like, how how can it simultaneously feel
- 16:19like no time has passed but also like an eternity has passed? How does
- 16:23that work? And it all depends too on like how much has really dramatically
- 16:33changed in that time and how many things have been like a real slow progression
- 16:40of change but not major ones. And that's sort of what's crept up on
- 16:44me here. Like I moved to Texas. This year will be nine years
- 16:52and I do not feel those nine years because I I pretty much am doing
- 17:00a lot of the same things as I did when I first moved here.
- 17:04I'm still recording a ton. I'm still with Owen and living in the same
- 17:07house. And even though we got married, and even though you know,
- 17:11in terms of like the way we live a lot of things have changed,
- 17:15there hasn't really been anything like truly substantial that has been a sea change for
- 17:22either of us. I wouldn't say so. Whenever I realized that I'm going
- 17:27on a decade, you know, I have to stop and be like,
- 17:32what the fuck because I do not feel it at all. And then there
- 17:38are times where somebody's like, oh, do you remember such and such than
- 17:41we did that like last year, And I'm like, last year that was
- 17:45like four years ago, wasn't it. Oh? Gus is in a chat
- 17:51and says, yes, it's a criminal in parentheses Crimin brand T shirt that
- 17:56pop Pug is the designer of pop Ug. I hope I'm saying that right.
- 18:00In the manga, it's a whole sequence of different weird weather phenomena.
- 18:03At one point it even snows cotton candy. Oh, I wish we'd gotten
- 18:07that. That sounds really fun, especially because Chopper loves cotton candy so much
- 18:14because it's on his post art. Gust does he have a moment in the
- 18:18manga where he's eating the cotton candy and like really happy and excited because you
- 18:23know, I want to see that. Demian says the starfish's name is Papagoo.
- 18:30I really don't like it. I might be saying it wrong, and
- 18:34that's why I don't like it, but I don't like it, So just
- 18:41letting you all know that. So oh right, And then Nammy is like
- 18:48in a rainslicker at one point, like a pink ringslicker. So yeah,
- 18:52they all just like reminisce here, and we have some flashbacks with Brooke as
- 18:57well. And I had thought, you guys, and I guess it's just
- 19:03supposed to be that we're at like a different spot on the Red Line.
- 19:08But isn't this where they met Laboon. Isn't he like at the Red Line?
- 19:15I thought this was where they met him? Or are they just not
- 19:19near like the sort of entrance exit. It's just a really long wall,
- 19:23right, so maybe it's just a different spot on it. And I was
- 19:30really surprised to find out that they are looking for Fishman Island before they try
- 19:37and go back to Laboon. I was certain we were doing Laboon first,
- 19:42even though they talked in the last episode about going to Fishman Island. I
- 19:48was sort of assuming that this was going to be the first stop. So
- 19:53I am not understanding like the setup of the universe here as is usual,
- 20:00because the way this map is doesn't really make sense for me. You know,
- 20:04I know that there's like a plan in place, that Oda has a
- 20:08map that he's working from, but every time that I that you guys,
- 20:12like, show me the map, my brain fails to comprehend it because it's
- 20:17just so wacky. Oh, Gus says, there an entire hemisphere away from
- 20:23Laboon. Demian says, the red line is a circle around the globe there
- 20:26at the exact opposite side of Laboon. Florian says, there's a short animation
- 20:32somewhere in this episode that shows it good I think the world and where Laboon
- 20:36is. Oh, how did I miss that? But anyway, so yeah,
- 20:42they're all realizing that the way that this natural phenomenon is happening is very
- 20:49similar to the way the knock up Stream worked, and that they were terrified
- 20:55of that, but it ended up being okay. It's still like at the
- 21:00time they were sort of thinking maybe we're gonna die and then they want up
- 21:04in this like cool magical land with clouds for furniture, and they're all basically
- 21:10gritting their teeth and going, if we were able to survive that, we
- 21:14can survive this. And Frankie does his couda burst as they like crest the
- 21:21top of one of these like huge cyclones is what I'm going to keep calling
- 21:26them sea snakes, I guess, And they managed to propel themselves up and
- 21:30out away from them into the air. Everybody is looking so happy and relieved
- 21:37about this, except for predictably us Up and Chopper, who are utterly terrified,
- 21:44and for good reason. There's like a temptation to see this ship as
- 21:49being like an airplane, but there's something holding it up. It's just been
- 21:52flung, you know. It's just a straight up like sling shot basically,
- 22:00you know. So, yeah, they this whole moment. Maybe this is
- 22:07a spot where it's because Nami is talking about how it feels sort of nostalgic,
- 22:11and I'm getting a little bit choked up. I thought for sure that
- 22:17Sangi was going to chime in there and say something or try and comfort her,
- 22:21but he just lights a cigarette. Us Up himself is crying a lot,
- 22:26and Zoro is the one who says, I feel like we've really grown
- 22:30up. Oh here it is. I see the graphic now. Wow.
- 22:36Okay, it's sort of odd the way it's set up, the twin capes
- 22:41where we met Labuner connected to the red line on the other side of the
- 22:45world. Okay, I got you. I I like must have blinked and
- 22:49missed that because it's a pretty quick little animation, you know. Also during
- 22:56this episode was when I was interrupted with a neighbor at the door with my
- 23:00two dogs. So I've both gotten out. So this is the moment where
- 23:11everybody is really feeling like, all right, we made it out, and
- 23:15shit's good. We have a little bit of downtime with everybody doing the things
- 23:19that they enjoy, which you guys know that I always always want more of
- 23:23this. Most of what we've got here is Zoro lifting I want to say
- 23:30lifting weights. He's lifting a weight, a weight that's like about the size
- 23:37of two cars connected by a pole. He is lifting it with one arm,
- 23:47and then he flips onto his hands in a handstand and puts the bar
- 23:53on his feet and begins to do like push ups with the bar balanced above
- 24:00his head, which is the sort of thing that while I know this is
- 24:04an exaggeration in a cartoon, I have seen people actually do stunts like this,
- 24:14and I just how are we the same species? Do you ever have
- 24:18that where you just look at somebody and you're just saying, nah, nah,
- 24:23we're not made out of the same stuff. You got muscles in places,
- 24:27and people tell me I have those same muscles. I don't think so.
- 24:32I think that's just a mistake. You've definitely got some extras like stuffed
- 24:36in there for sure, and also probably an extra lung and also probably like
- 24:44an entirely different type of metabolism, because there's just no way. And I
- 24:48know that's not strictly true, but it's like a little bit true. Once
- 24:52you get to know some of how these people's bodies work, it's like no,
- 24:56no, they are working at like a particular Optimi level for whatever reason.
- 25:02And so this, the moment where he does this, was just making
- 25:03me think of a couple of things that I'll be scrolling Instagram and all of
- 25:07a sudden I'll see somebody doing something truly wild, and I'm just like,
- 25:11while I give up, Okay, good to know that these superhuman beings are
- 25:18out there, and I guess I'll just I would love now that I think
- 25:22about this in these terms, and like a comic or a skit about ordinary
- 25:30people who are used to being like really strong in their community, being like
- 25:36tough, and then they find out that there are like, you know,
- 25:40Marvel superheroes, and the sort of identity crisis that they have because they're no
- 25:45longer the strongest person, or because they realize that no matter how hard they
- 25:49work, they're just never going to be able to do the things that these
- 25:52people can do, and that that would be like a really tough thing to
- 25:56deal with because so much of the time it's when we see like those kind
- 26:06the kinds of characters that are like just sort of I don't know, the
- 26:11flunkeys. I guess in stories, there's a lot of people who are meant
- 26:17to be helping out villains and stuff that they themselves don't have any kinds of
- 26:19superpowers, And I'm sort of like, maybe they just teamed up with the
- 26:23villain because they realized that they are completely vulnerable and don't really have any way
- 26:30to protect themselves, so they may as well align with somebody who can have
- 26:33their back, let's see, Gus says. I think Brooke also explains in
- 26:41these episodes or last time that they aren't going straight back to Laboon because their
- 26:44promise was that they would go all the way around the world and come back
- 26:48over the grant the red line from the front to meet Laboon again. Oh
- 26:52okay, I didn't remember that, but I believe you. But I just,
- 26:57yeah, I didn't remember that at all. But forgive me, guys.
- 27:03Like I was talking about this before recording, but it has been a
- 27:07very like high stress week a couple days, I don't know, decade whatever,
- 27:15and I have been feeling like I'm not retaining things the way I normally
- 27:19do. That's not to say I don't miss stuff on the regular, but
- 27:23I usually am a little bit better than I feel like i've been today.
- 27:27So we also get the flashbacks to Zoro getting all of that pain inflicted on
- 27:37him by Kuma, and he is really motivated by the fact that he feels
- 27:44he is still too weak and could potentially fail his crew. Which I wouldn't
- 27:52say that you were two weak, sir, because you got that deal in
- 27:56the first place and managed to get everybody else off scot free. Somehow,
- 28:03although I still think Kuma was like he was doing something shady, and also,
- 28:10you withstood all of that pain and afterward you were okay, Like,
- 28:15granted you did pass out for a bit, but you came out the other
- 28:18side. It didn't kill you, and that's fully what he expected it to
- 28:21do. So to me being like I'm too weak and I'm going to let
- 28:26down my crew, I'm like, you showed how strong you were and Loki
- 28:33saved everybody, I'm drawn the opposite conclusion from you, sir. But anyway,
- 28:41so our friends decide that at this point they are going to start looking
- 28:45for the Fishman Island, which is apparently like underwater, and so some of
- 28:52them get onto the little submarine, which I had said I was excited about
- 28:57seeing in the the Filler episodes because it was mentioned, but I didn't expect
- 29:06it to just come up in the regular episode. So there's a moment and
- 29:11I have to address it where Brooke asks Nami again what kind of panties she's
- 29:18wearing. Oh, guys, I know that it's too late, it's done,
- 29:22and that this little running joke is gonna be a thing I just wish
- 29:30so much. It warn't I just wish we could just delete this part,
- 29:33you know, like make it literally anything else. You know what I would
- 29:40do, were I to be somebody who came in and just sort of went
- 29:45over some things that were really problematic, is I would make Brooke, because
- 29:52he is obsessed with his afro and it's such a part of his identity.
- 29:56I would make him be really like curious how Nami maintains her hair and asking
- 30:04her what products she uses and stuff all the time, and like during really
- 30:08inopportune moments, being like, you know, I saw this like a deep
- 30:14conditioners somewhere, but you had to keep it warm, And I don't know
- 30:17if I have the setup to do that. Have you ever tried this,
- 30:19like just during you know, a battle where it's not really appropriate to be
- 30:23talking about hair care. But I feel like you could do something where he
- 30:29has a particular like connection to Nami or not connection, but like she's the
- 30:34primary person he's talking to and is going to with this little, you know,
- 30:41repetitive joke and not have it be just straight up sexual harassment. So
- 30:49let's just pretend from now on, every time that he does one of these
- 30:55jokes that he's just doing a little like deep conditioner hair care joke. Can
- 30:59you recommend a hot curling iron or something? I don't know. So we
- 31:06go down into the water and it supposedly got a max depth of like five
- 31:12thousand meters, but Brooke, at one point it starts to shake, and
- 31:17he's like, that doesn't seem right, And then he looks and sees like,
- 31:22I think that we actually passed the five thousand meters already. So we're
- 31:27in a bad place. This is no good. There's water pressure and it's
- 31:32going to crack this submarine like a tin can. Hey, everybody, those
- 31:40of you listening far into the future may not feel this as acutely, but
- 31:47I'm recording this. I think three days after they found the pieces of the
- 31:55submersible the titan that went down to see the Titanic. They never found bodies
- 32:00because likely there aren't any. They probably just got completely like pulverized into paste
- 32:07from the pressure and basically like you know, became powder, wet, wet
- 32:15powder. But all I could think about was that in this scene, y'all,
- 32:21I did not need this particular like shaking. Oh, we went too
- 32:27deep. It's more than this sub can handle. After that whole thing and
- 32:35for those of you who want to hear my Reshawn's thoughts about that debacle,
- 32:42we recorded an unsobered episode where we basically talked about why billionaires are evil,
- 32:50like there's no possible way to be a billionaire without being an inherently bad person,
- 32:57and thus why we were not particularly sorry or able to work up much
- 33:04empathy for the folks on board because they got killed due to traveling in a
- 33:13vehicle that was like built to skirt around all kinds of regulations, and rich
- 33:22folks are the ones that are always pushing for deregulation, but normally it's only
- 33:25the poor people who get to suffer the consequences of that. So there's something
- 33:30that feels extremely appropriate for a change about some rich folks getting bitten in the
- 33:37ass by their own desire to just like circumvent the law, and also the
- 33:44fact that these assholes wanted to do what they wanted to do without oversight,
- 33:52so they purposely try to go into international waters to make it possible to avoid
- 34:00certain laws and regulations. But then once the submersible was lost, one of
- 34:09the I can't it's not the CEO because he's the one who died, but
- 34:14there's one of the guys who was in charge who basically said, any government
- 34:19that refuses to help us with the effort of finding them, I am going
- 34:24to let all the public know that you refuse to help, which is really
- 34:30a hell of a flex because you straight up did this so that you were
- 34:35not under the jurisdiction of these countries, and now you're like, you better
- 34:40fucking help because why what just the audacity of these people. I truly it's
- 34:49beyond belief that anyway, So you guys, I'm sorry, but I had
- 34:54to mention it, you know, I had to mention it. So at
- 34:59this point, this creature comes up and looks like it's going to bite them.
- 35:01He's got a very rabbity vibe. And it's a bizarre thing because a
- 35:07rabbit underwater, it's just not something you're used to seeing. He's got fur,
- 35:12for sure, and it's like fur sure, and also the long years
- 35:17and everything, and I was just sort of like, what is this doing
- 35:22down here? What even? And we wind up seeing it again later and
- 35:28everybody's treating it like a joke, like, oh woo, it's about to
- 35:30eat us. Meanwhile, up on deck, everybody is like, what is
- 35:36this like good or bad? Should we go in and rescue them? I'm
- 35:39not even sure what we should be doing. And they all get very distracted
- 35:45by Sanji prancing out with a pear tart, and he's so excited about presenting
- 35:54this to all of them that they have him animated with these like waving legs.
- 36:00Love these, I love these weird animations of him. But yeah,
- 36:04they're all delighted having their pear tarts, and I was just like, oh,
- 36:07that sounds so good, you guys. If I were extremely wealthy,
- 36:17I after obviously helping my friends, and I would probably keep on retainer a
- 36:25chef to do like meal prep for me, maybe once a week, so
- 36:30that I didn't have to do it. And one of the things I would
- 36:34have them do was like a particularly intricate pastry dessert, the kind of thing
- 36:42that like, you can't really get it out in Texas. You have to
- 36:46make it yourself. And if you're going to make it yourself, it's a
- 36:50ball breaker. So because there's so many things that I know how to make
- 36:54them, and I even enjoy making them, but they take specialized equipment or
- 37:01space and it's just not going to happen in my little kitchen. So this
- 37:07tart just made me sort of go, oh man, they've really got a
- 37:10good on this ship with him as a cook, Like I feel this way
- 37:15already with everything that he makes a savory, but when he dances out here
- 37:20with this lovely tart that's looking so like neatly put together, I was so
- 37:24jealous. So this is when our friend's surface and they get out of the
- 37:32sub and they're just like, oh, yeah, that was really fun.
- 37:36And I was thinking, like, oh, they're back because they found it,
- 37:40but they did not find it, And Nami is getting really frustrated because
- 37:45she's got that paper that's supposed to help her, but it's just really difficult
- 37:51to know how to use it when they are in like three dement four dimensions
- 37:57here. I guess because it's pointing downward, but as far as like how
- 38:02straight down to go, and it's just a really difficult thing to guess and
- 38:07to know. As they're talking about this, the monster comes up out of
- 38:13the water, looking like the fucking rabbit from Donnie Darko, and it's got
- 38:17a like a rabbit front half, but it's got a fish tail. It's
- 38:23like like a rabbit. Mermaid and Lufy punches it with gum gum rifle and
- 38:34as it falls, I really do enjoy this. Oo's up and Chopper are
- 38:40both going man After fighting Oars, nothing really seems that big anymore, Like,
- 38:47I mean, it's big, but it just doesn't feel the same.
- 38:51I feel like this would have been a lot scarier before we met Oars.
- 38:55And then all of a sudden, you see these two shadows fly out of
- 39:00his mouth and plummeting towards the deck of the ship. Are a starfish in
- 39:08a hat. So he's got a real weird silhouette and a mermaid. And
- 39:15she lands directly on top of Sanjie, who has of course rushed out to
- 39:19catch her unsuccessfully, And I was sort of wondering if Sanjie was going to
- 39:24be disappointed because she doesn't quite look like what he was anticipating. But I
- 39:30should have known better, because Sanjie really is kind of an equal opportunity pervert.
- 39:36Like in terms of obviously when it comes to Kokoo, the incessant fat
- 39:43jokes are very tiresome, you guys, So I'm just going to skate right
- 39:46past that. But in terms of like if a girl is cute, it
- 39:52is of no consequence to him what color her hair is, how long her
- 39:58hair is, and they all in this universe the exact same face, so
- 40:00that's kind of not an issue at all. But yeah, so this mermaid,
- 40:09she's got the little T shirt on, she's got green hair that spiked
- 40:14out, she's wearing this little backpack that looks like something straight out of Animal
- 40:17Crossing to me, and she's a little bit freaked out to see them all,
- 40:22but she's extremely cheery and like a second later, is just going,
- 40:27oh, I'm so sorry. I'm really glad to meet you all. That's
- 40:30like the twentieth time that I almost have been eaten by a sea king.
- 40:32And I'm getting really tired of this and I should pay you back. So
- 40:37how about some octopus fritters? And this begins an ongoing thing with Lufy where
- 40:49and I honestly relate to him so much with this where she mentions the octopus
- 40:59fritter heat and that just becomes the driving force of absolutely everything that he does
- 41:07for the next three episodes. And I, y'all, I think this is
- 41:16one of those things that like really made me realize what a food addict I
- 41:22am. And I'm chasing this dragon. When it comes to food, where
- 41:28I'm looking for, like the kind of good feeling that I would get when
- 41:30I ate certain things. It's not about the food itself. It's about trying
- 41:34to like recapture a moment. But I am also really really impressionable. So
- 41:40if I'm watching television and somebody shows me like a picture of a gooey piece
- 41:46of pizza that's being pulled out of a whole pie with the cheese like drooping,
- 41:52I will not be able to stop thinking about pizza for at least a
- 41:58couple of hours. I can sometimes shake it and I can move on with
- 42:01my life, or I can completely lose the plot and be like, well,
- 42:09it's pizza time. It's pizza time. Pizza time is now we're doing
- 42:12pizza. And that could be with anything. Like you there's a and this
- 42:20never works on me because I literally get a soda every time I go to
- 42:22the movies. But there's a point in when you're at a lot of movie
- 42:27theaters well where they'll play the sound of ice cubes hitting a glass and then
- 42:32just the sound of like the carbonation as the sodas poured into the glass,
- 42:38and there's no music, there's no nothing. It's just meant to evoke the
- 42:44feeling of the soda. And I have always just been so impressed with Like,
- 42:47if I didn't have a soda already, I absolutely would go get one.
- 42:52It would happen, It just would. So the fact that he grows
- 42:53so obsessed with this, I was just like, nah, I get it,
- 42:57I really do, you know, especially because it seems like it's a
- 43:00specialty of theirs, which means that they're probably extra good. Although I will
- 43:05say it is really weird that the octopus man is selling octopus fritters because it
- 43:08feels like that is not something that he would want to cook. But that's
- 43:14fine, and I appreciate all of them standing around and just kind of being
- 43:22like, what is this girl's deal? And Brooke comes forward and asks her
- 43:31if she would be so kind as to lend him some money. I don't
- 43:37know what the deal is here. I thought that there was going to be
- 43:39another panty s joke, but because she wouldn't wear panties because she's got a
- 43:44fish bottom, I was sort of thinking that was going to be the punchline
- 43:47is that, of course she doesn't, you know. Lucy asks her the
- 43:51same question about pooping, and she is like trying, She's trying to answer
- 43:59him and say that she does, but Sanji doesn't want to hear it.
- 44:02And then we slow pan over to her friend, the starfish, who seems
- 44:09very sad to not be included in the conversation, and Lufy drags him over
- 44:16and is like, is this a talking glove and he says. She says,
- 44:22he's my pet and a starfish. He's also my teacher and he's got
- 44:30the wildest voice. You guys, this starfish. When he is talked to
- 44:37a little bit later by Lufy, who's like, how did you learn how
- 44:39to talk, he says, basically, I grew up thinking I was human,
- 44:45and by the time I realized I was just a starfish, I had
- 44:50learned how to talk to which Lufy says, wow, I didn't know talking
- 44:54worked like that, which is honestly one of the best. It's not just
- 45:00the line itself, it's the way it's delivered, like totally innocently. That
- 45:06made me. Lol. I really that bit got me good. I don't
- 45:09know why. And he sings a song and you guys, it really is
- 45:20like I'm not sure whether or not it's supposed to be that he's really bad
- 45:27at this. I am assuming it is because brookes thing whenever he was playing
- 45:31music was so good. And I don't know if maybe it's just they didn't
- 45:37work as hard with the translation because they didn't feel like it mattered or what.
- 45:42But he is terrible and he's just like singing this little introduction for himself
- 45:49and it's just a real weird moment. And I kind of expected everybody to
- 45:53just be like, Okay, I guess, dude, but basically they all
- 45:59just get distracted and don't pay attention to him. I thought they were going
- 46:04to actively mock him, and it's more that they just move on, and
- 46:07I'm just look, guys, I understand that we can have like a joke
- 46:15about somebody being a bad musician, and that's fine, but I'm somebody who
- 46:20has a really hard time with watching people sing or musical numbers when they feel
- 46:27like really forced anyway, So I am just going to cross my fingers and
- 46:31hope that it's not going to be a running gag that we have to deal
- 46:39with a bunch, because I felt like it was supposed to be a lot
- 46:43funnier than it was. So anyway, we find out in the course of
- 46:51things, she has a transponder snail, and she's talking to somebody named and
- 47:00everybody is sort of vaguely like that name is familiar. But the person Hatchie's
- 47:07supposed to own this transponder snail and be the one that answers, but the
- 47:10guy who picks up is not him and is gloating over the fact that,
- 47:19like, we were planning to sell your friend. If you want to save
- 47:22him, you'd better hurry. And they're trying to lure her in. I
- 47:25thought when we go to the scene a little bit later and they're like,
- 47:30your plan worked exactly as possible. She's coming to us. I thought that
- 47:35this was an attempt to lure the straw Hats as well. I thought they
- 47:37already knew that she was with them, which of course they don't. I
- 47:42don't know why I would think that, but they find out pretty quickly.
- 47:47So yeah, basically what happens here is Nami volunteers everybody's services in helping her
- 47:54friend in in pain mint for this girl, showing them where Fishman Island is,
- 48:05which wouldn't be a hardship for her since that's likely where she would be
- 48:07heading anyway, and they come to this agreement. But everybody behind her is
- 48:15sort of mad at the fact that Nami is acting like she's their boss.
- 48:22But I think she is their boss, So I think it's fine. If
- 48:29you guys want to get somewhere and she's your navigator and she needs help,
- 48:34that's about as good a deal as you're going to ask for, in my
- 48:37opinion. So she is thrilled. It's like, okay, you guys are
- 48:43gonna help me, say hatchie perfect, And she yells off the deck of
- 48:49the ship and asks for help finding where they need to go from the fish,
- 48:55which form a straight like arrow in the direction they need to go.
- 49:01And it is a really fun little bit until the fish are like, oh,
- 49:07something's going on, so sorry, we're gonna have to get back to
- 49:09you. We can't finish this. Meanwhile, we go over to du Valls
- 49:16Well Kingdom. I guess on this C shaped island, and I don't know
- 49:22if it's an actual island or if it's a ship in and of itself,
- 49:27since we've seen islands that are actually ships. But his henchman, we've got
- 49:32a dude who's like, he's so pretty that he looks like one of the
- 49:40if those of you who have seen gravity falls, and if you haven't,
- 49:44you really should. There is an ongoing joke about a couple of characters that
- 49:51the little girl has a crush on fictional dudes like cartoon guys, but also
- 49:57a boy band. And this dude looks like he walked straight out of that
- 50:04joke. He almost gives me the vibe of like, what if the duck
- 50:08lips fishman were a regular human, this is what he would look like,
- 50:14you know. And it turns out that it's mermaids that fetch like the highest
- 50:22price of all, so they're luring her in and that way they can sell
- 50:28her and I don't know what that would be for, but I don't really
- 50:32want to think about it. Hatchie is sitting here, really sad, tied
- 50:38up, and once he hears that the straw Hats are here, begins to
- 50:45freak out that not only are the straw Hats going to kick everybody else's ass,
- 50:52but as soon as they see him, they're going to recognize him and
- 50:54they are going to come at him for what happened on the island, which
- 51:00they were not wrong. He was not wrong. Initially they were going to
- 51:05do that, but eventually Nami is just like, you know what, let's
- 51:10let bygones be bygones, which I do appreciate. So this guy Duval has
- 51:22encountered Loofy before and considers Loofy to be the one who has ruined his life.
- 51:30And I am very, very uncertain what who this is. A part
- 51:37of me keeps thinking Crocodile. We get like a real creepy bulging eye at
- 51:43one point because he's wearing this heavy metal, heavy metal, this metal mask
- 51:47that covers up his face purposely to you know, give us a bit of
- 51:52a shock. I'm sure once it's revealed who he is. But I kept
- 51:57thinking about Crocodile and I couldn't remember if he was actually killed. That's the
- 52:02thing with like the way the universe works is I kind of feel like nobody
- 52:07ever actually dies, even when it looks like they died, you know,
- 52:10I it's unclear, but I'm pretty sure. I mean it's not Buggy because
- 52:19he The thing that keeps happening with Duval is that his accent keeps coming out.
- 52:27And I only started watching the dub like you know, in the fifth
- 52:34arc, fourth arc, if this character were dubbed with this accent, I
- 52:39wouldn't know it, and I'm pretty sure that Buggy wasn't dubbed with a Southern
- 52:45accent, although I'm feeling like I remember you guys saying that Crocodile was dubbed
- 52:50with a weird accent, So maybe it is Crocodile. And I wouldn't be
- 52:54mad if Crocodile came back as a villain because he was just so scary.
- 52:59But this guy does also seem extremely huge, and I don't recommend, or
- 53:06I don't recommend. I don't remember Crocodile being this gigantic. So I'm trying
- 53:14to see, like he's got the bell bottom pants and boots that look like
- 53:21Western boots. He's got a sort of harness across his chest. This is
- 53:30like ringing vague bells, but like not enough, you know what I'm saying,
- 53:36And a sort of looks almost to be like fur scarf draped around his
- 53:42neck, with like a black leather jacket and these giant metal epaulettes. I
- 53:49oh my god, you guys. I I keep thinking like, is it?
- 54:00And then I kind of cut myself off. Well, I'm just gonna
- 54:05really hold out hope that it's not. Don Creeg because anytime that you mentioned
- 54:09metal epaulets, that's who I'm going to think of first. But don Creek,
- 54:16as much as I remember, wasn't this big. Like, we never
- 54:21really met guys this size until kind of later on in the story, right,
- 54:25I feel like it wasn't until the grand line that we ran into dudes
- 54:30who were basically three times the size of a regular man. I'm the only
- 54:37exception that I can remember being like Arlong and his guys because they were a
- 54:40fishmen and they weren't even human, so they got to be whatever the fock
- 54:44size. So that's kind of where I'm running into problems here with like who
- 54:49he could be, because I don't think Crocodile was this big either. I
- 54:54genuinely don't know. He's wearing a helmet that that almost looks like it's like
- 55:02medieval but not. It's the sort of thing that I feel like a character
- 55:07in Road Warrior would wear, you know. But yeah, he is like
- 55:15completely overwhelmed at the idea that the straw hats are here, and everybody gets
- 55:20alarmed at the fact that his accent is starting to get stronger, because apparently
- 55:24that's the sign that he is starting to completely lose his temper and folks around
- 55:30him get hurt when he loses his temper. So he tells everybody to fucking
- 55:37listen to him and be extremely careful with how they deal with these guys,
- 55:44because if they fuck this up, he is never ever going to let them
- 55:50forget it. I don't know if maybe this is somebody that's like from even
- 55:58beyond where we saw in the show, like further into Lucy's past. I
- 56:04don't know. So they set up this trap, and of course our friends
- 56:12sailed right into it, but they mostly are aware of what the trap is,
- 56:16even if Cammy and I can't remember that guy's name, the Starfish.
- 56:22I'm just gonna calm Starfish. His voice, you guys, his voice actor.
- 56:27It almost feels like he's trying to do like an Iago from a Laddin
- 56:30kind of thing. It's not quite as it's not like an imitation of what's
- 56:37his face, but there is a sort of like crassness to it. And
- 56:44I just don't like him. I just don't like him, and we'll see
- 56:47if he wins me over or what. So they sail in and Cammy is
- 56:57basically like, oh my god, my friend is tied up and I want
- 57:01to help him, and they all refuse to help because this guy did some
- 57:12shit to them, which I'm really not mad at them about. And she
- 57:16is so upset that they are just going to fucking abandon her after promising to
- 57:23help, that she jumps into the water without any sort of plan at all.
- 57:31I think that it's Usap who's like, oh, I'm sure she has
- 57:35a plan, but guess what, they do not, And she jumps in
- 57:44and immediately gets scooped up by a bunch of batties who were waiting under the
- 57:49water. It's so embarrassing how completely immediate it is. So they're hoisting her
- 57:57above their heads, and Hatchie is watching and really really upset. Sanjie starts
- 58:05to step forward and is clearly like, I'm gonna do something about this.
- 58:08But Nami is watching Hacchi and the way he's like freaking out and he is
- 58:15pounding against the bars of his cage and seems genuinely determined, like I'm gonna
- 58:20fucking save her if I have to beat myself to a pulp against the inside
- 58:23of this cage to do it, And that seems to move her, and
- 58:28she's like, all right, you know what, let's go ahead and save
- 58:30him. He isn't all that bad. He isn't like the other ones.
- 58:36And we did promise KM maybe we'd help, so let's go for it.
- 58:42Of course, Sanjie is just delighted with this. With this move, he
- 58:49starts doing one of those little dances where he's got he's spinning in place like
- 58:54perfect pirouets, and Lufy says, if you say it's okay, it's okay.
- 59:01He's got a weird bracelet around his arm and I don't know if that's
- 59:06significant, guys, but I don't remember it. And when he turns around,
- 59:10there's drool dripping out of his mouth and his eyes are octopus fritters,
- 59:15which I'm really glad that's in the dialogue because I did not know what was
- 59:19going on there for a minute. And this like the whole thing with this
- 59:29dude. He's sort of sitting in the dark in shadow, and he's on
- 59:36one of the transponder snails, and he's talking to the flying fish riders,
- 59:39who are the ones that brought him the report about Lofy to begin with.
- 59:45And these flying fish is a really neat design, like they're underwater for a
- 59:50lot of it because they are they have like fish bowl headsets for oxygen and
- 59:57whatnot. So like that combo with the fact that the flying fish are equipped
- 1:00:04to sort of look like motorcycles, it's a very fun aesthetic that it took
- 1:00:09me a little bit to really understand what they were doing, because initially I
- 1:00:14was like, these guys look like a motorcycle gang, but I wasn't really
- 1:00:17getting how that could be. And then once I really saw the flying fish
- 1:00:22a little bit better, I was like, oh, I see, okay,
- 1:00:25we're doing like they're a biker gang of the sea. And this is
- 1:00:32when Lufy uses his rubber powers to scoop up Cammy and get her back on
- 1:00:39his boat, and then he yells for Zoro to chop open the cage and
- 1:00:45let Hocchie out. And Hacchi, for his part, I appreciated this despite
- 1:00:53the fact that he is going to be saved by these people and he could
- 1:00:59just keep his men well shut. I guess it is for his own best
- 1:01:01interests as well, but he's just like, guys, there's still a trap,
- 1:01:05you know, so just like be careful and as they are about to
- 1:01:12like let him out of the cage, Duval says to his men, Okay,
- 1:01:16now attack and we go back to the surface, and everybody is just
- 1:01:22sort of, it feels like, standing around happy with their guard down.
- 1:01:25It doesn't seem like anybody really understands the level of the fight that's about to
- 1:01:31go down because they don't know that Duval has a personal grudge against them for
- 1:01:37any particular reason. I think that's really what it is, you know.
- 1:01:44So this is the moment where Hachi is yelling to all of them, guys,
- 1:01:51you need to stand back, and MOPy just says, bring it,
- 1:01:57you, dumb flying fish, and they're coming up underneath the sunny And meanwhile,
- 1:02:05throughout all of this, Duval is just in some weird room by himself,
- 1:02:07like gazing morosely at the tabletop. Not really you know what I mean.
- 1:02:14He's just got a very strange energy here. Where as much as he's
- 1:02:17like obviously brooding and enraged, he doesn't want to be any part of this
- 1:02:24particular fight. He wants to deal with them they're once they got got,
- 1:02:31but he doesn't want to be part of the takedown, which I think is
- 1:02:35kind of interesting and makes me wonder is he tired of fighting? Is that
- 1:02:38what it is. He keeps talking about how if he takes out Lufy he'll
- 1:02:43get his life back, and I really want to know what that even means.
- 1:02:49So oh Gus says it's the bracelet Nami let him have from the Treasure
- 1:02:55and thriller bark Okay, cool, thank you, So yeah, I'm going
- 1:03:00to wrap this one up. But I really did like these these episodes.
- 1:03:05It was a very unexpected direction that we went in. But I also do
- 1:03:09like when there's like a character that had been an enemy that kind of turns
- 1:03:13a corner. So I'm interested in that for Hatchey. We'll see how he
- 1:03:15does. All right, guys, thank you again so much for hanging out.
- 1:03:20Thank you to Florian for commissioning this. Until next time to loom Motherfucker's
