- 0:00Hey, y'all, welcome to day's show. We're going to continue right along
- 0:03with our series on sacraments, and we're still in this section where I'm going
- 0:09through what the Bible says on the sacraments, and you know, I think
- 0:13today we can probably wrap it up. I think we can get through the
- 0:15last three. We'll start with annoying of the sick. What's remarkable about the
- 0:23sacrament of the annoying of the sick, which is the power Jesus gave his
- 0:28apostles to heal people, usually done with oil, you know, but or
- 0:33just laying on his hands prayers. That's an authority he gave to his apostles,
- 0:39and the apostles gave to their successors. What's remarkable about it is how
- 0:43little the Bible says. And you know, you may think, well that's
- 0:47not evidence. Well, actually he really is. Because Jesus spread his ministry
- 0:53through healing people. The apostles healed people commonly. I mean it was said
- 1:02that even their shadow that fell upon someone who was in any way sick or
- 1:07injured would heal them, their handkerchiefs, their cloths, that they had touched
- 1:12anything it was did. The early Church was spread primarily just as Jesus spread
- 1:19his ministry by healing people, teaching preaching healing, and so really, when
- 1:29you think about it in that light, it was so commonplace for the Apostles
- 1:36when they wrote their gospels, and you know the acts and all the letters
- 1:41of Saint Paul and etc. That I don't even know if they even saw
- 1:49it as a sacrament. You know, it was just what they did.
- 1:53They're very touched, their very shadow could heal people. But it's so important
- 1:59because when we look at them the Old Testament, I think it was Elijah,
- 2:05could have been Alicia. I always get those two confused. You know,
- 2:07one was taken up into heaven, the other died and was buried when
- 2:13they opened his grave by accident and buried another man, and he hit the
- 2:19dead man, touched the bones of the saint. He came back to life.
- 2:23When Saint Paul's I mean, I'm sorry, Saint John, John the
- 2:28Baptist, When John the Baptists apostles came to Jesus and asked, are you
- 2:35the one you know? John wants to know basically, and he said,
- 2:38tell him. You know what he said, the dead rise, the sick,
- 2:44the sick or heal the poor, comforted, the blind, receiver sight.
- 2:49I'm sure I got that wrong, but that was one of the aspects.
- 2:52I mean, it was like you would know the Messiah because he had
- 2:57that great power of God to heal. What is the power of God to
- 3:00heal? We have to remember that death and sickness entered the world through sin.
- 3:06Our first parents, Adam and Eve, were immortal. They had no
- 3:09sickness through their fall. Only did death and sickness enter the world through sin.
- 3:19The wages of sin are our death. Wages of sin. It's gonna
- 3:24be arcs, that's plural, but anyway, the effect of sin, according
- 3:30to the Bible, is death and sickness. That precedes death. God has
- 3:35the God of order, God of creation. Disease is disorder, death is
- 3:42decomposition. Disorder and decomposition are in opposition to the will of God. Jesus
- 3:50came and set things right, and so he had complete and in Tuesday,
- 3:53has complete power over sickness and death. He conquered death. He gave to
- 4:00his apostles the power to heal. That's one of the most important signs of
- 4:06the authentic Church, and it's so briefly mentioned the Bible the fact that it
- 4:13is. It just tells you it was almost taken for granted. And you
- 4:16know, to this day we talk about like Lords Lords France, where millions
- 4:23of people have gone and received miraculous cures. It's like something everybody knows about
- 4:27and nobody talks about because it's common knowledge, right, I mean, even
- 4:31to most Protestants, even the most non Christians, they've heard about all the
- 4:34miracles at Lord's, all the stacked up crutches and wheelchairs that were no longer
- 4:40needed. So it's not really surprising at all that there should be very little
- 4:47specific mentioned of this sacrament in the Bible, because no one denied it,
- 4:53no one thought it was strange. It was a sign of God's you know
- 5:00power in the church Mark six, and they cast out many devils and anointed
- 5:06many sick people with oil and cured them. That's what we do in the
- 5:11sacrament of the annoying the sick. The priest takes the blessed oil and makes
- 5:15a sign of the cross in your head, and you know, essentially praised
- 5:20that if it's God's will that you be healed, you'll be healed, and
- 5:25it heals. If it doesn't heal, the body. Maybe that's not God's
- 5:28will. I know it's hard accept but sometimes it is actually better for us
- 5:32to suffer for our salvation. We're not going to be healed. Sometimes we
- 5:38don't even suffer for ourselves. We suffer for our families. We suffer for
- 5:41those who care for us, because without their willing care for us, they
- 5:47may not reach salvation. We don't know the mind of God, but that
- 5:54annoying of the sick has been efficacious in healing incurable diseases and etc. To
- 6:02the most mundane things. From the very beginning of the church. That has
- 6:08literally Christ's ministry a big part of it. That's been continued for now over
- 6:14two thousand years. And it's important that it says in Mark six, they
- 6:17annointed me six people with oil. Protestants deny, you know, the real
- 6:24presence of the body and blood of Christ and the Eucharist. They deny sacramentals,
- 6:30They deny that a physical object can have a spiritual power. They say
- 6:32it's superstition. They actually say it's evil. But but here in the Bible,
- 6:39Mark chapter six, I mean, not only through throughout the gospels and
- 6:44as such as Jesus say, this bread is actually my body and this wine
- 6:48is actually my blood. Here in Mark chapter six, it's oil. The
- 6:53earliest church, the apostles were using sacramentals blessed oil. In order to bless
- 7:00that oil, the apostles had to have the power to bind and loose.
- 7:03In order to make bread and wine the body and blood of Christ, the
- 7:08apostles had to have the ability to bind and loose. You know, if
- 7:13you take if your soul Scripture, or if you're a pure Protestant and you
- 7:15only believe the Bible, believe the Bible, that there is such a thing
- 7:19as blest oil James fourteen through sixteen. Any one of you who is ill
- 7:29should send for the elders of the Church, and they must anoint the sick
- 7:32person with oil in the name of the Lord, and pray over him.
- 7:36The prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise
- 7:41him up again. And if he has committed any sins, he will be
- 7:44forgiven. So confess your sins to one another and pray for one another to
- 7:47be cured. The heartfelt prayer of someone upright works very powerfully. That's a
- 7:54lot to unpack in that one. First of all, again, anointing with
- 7:59oil just as in the Old Testament, the priests and even the king,
- 8:03the levites up to you know, King Solomon were anointed with blessed oil.
- 8:09The physical and the spiritual are intensely intertwined because God is the author of both.
- 8:16To deny, that is, to deny the will of God and his
- 8:22very words that the water of baptism, the actual water is efficacious, said
- 8:28the oil, and the anointing the sick is efficacious. You know, that's
- 8:33that's what the Bible actually says. And you know a confession is part of
- 8:39it. When you go you're dying and you call the police, the priest
- 8:43and for the last time you confess, he forgives you your sins under the
- 8:48power we talked about yesterday and the power when Jesus said, those who sends
- 8:52you forgive, they are forgiven. Those who sends you retain, they are
- 8:56contained. He retained, I should say he the priest, in the person
- 9:01of Jesus Christ, because he's acting as God's agent, forgives your sins,
- 9:07anoint you with the oil, and if you're able, you receive the Eucharist
- 9:13that was called the viaticum, or like food for the journey actually essentially life
- 9:18for the journey. If you want to look at it that way. It
- 9:20was once called an extreme unction. It's the greatest cure there is. And
- 9:28also it says that God hears the prayer of the upright person, the just
- 9:33man. That's why the saint's prayers are so effective. When we ask a
- 9:39saint to pray for us, we know they're in heaven with God and they
- 9:43have God's favor because it says right there in the Bible, the hard foot
- 9:46felt prayer of someone upright works very powerfully. Who's more upright than someone in
- 9:52heaven totally purified of all sin in the presence of God. I'm not that
- 9:56upright. If you think you are, you might want to look at that
- 10:05pride quoth before the fall. I mean humility, God, you know,
- 10:07emphasize humbleness. Humility. That's you know in the Beatitudes, the you know.
- 10:16Anyway, let's get onto holy orders. The simplest can be. I
- 10:22mean, you know, the apostles were given the power to bind and loose,
- 10:24they could ordain priests, you know, acts through twenty six. But
- 10:31you will receive the power of the Holy Spirit which will come on you,
- 10:35and then you will be my witness not only in Jerusalem, but throughout ju
- 10:39day in Samaria, and indeed the earth's remotest end. That's the heart of
- 10:48ordination right there. One bishop, one head of the church, ordains the
- 10:54priests, and it's been an unbroken succession for over two thousand years. It
- 11:01goes on to say, and when they reached the city, they went to
- 11:03the upper room where they were staying. There were Peter and John, James,
- 11:07and Andrew, Philip and Thomas Bartholomew and Matthew James, son of alf
- 11:13Faeus. I guess that's something you pronounced it, Simon the Zealot, and
- 11:16Jude, the son of James, my patron saint. By the way,
- 11:20my name Saint, my name being Judson, people call me jud So of
- 11:24course I've chose Saint Jude. But don't think that it was lost on me
- 11:28that Saint Jude is the patron saint of lost causes which I could certainly with
- 11:35which I could certainly identify with one heart. All these joined constantly in prayer,
- 11:41together with some women, including Mary, the Mother of Jesus, Mary
- 11:45the Mother of God, the blessed Virgin Mary mothered the church. She is
- 11:50the mother of the Church. She explained to them, She guided them,
- 11:54she comforted them. There is no church without the blessed Virgin Mary, especially
- 12:00because there's no Jesus without this blessed Virgin Mary. You know, we'll get
- 12:05into the saints later and what Catholics actually believe about saints. But I don't
- 12:11see how anyway Protestants denigrate the Mother of God in good conscience. When you
- 12:18don't talk bad about somebody's mother, right, they have some kind of like
- 12:22animosity. Many, dude, not all, many, many of the anti
- 12:26Catholic ones do as if Mary had no role. Without Mary, there's no
- 12:33Jesus without Mary, there's no church. I mean, anyway, we'll get
- 12:41to that end of the day. One day, Peter stood up to speak
- 12:45to the brothers. There are about one hundred and twenty people in the congregation
- 12:48Brothers. He said, the passage of Scripture had to be fulfilled, in
- 12:52which the Holy Spirit, speaking through David, foretells the fate of Jesus,
- 12:56who act as a guide to the men who arrested Jesus. After being one
- 13:00of our number and sharing our ministry. As you know, he bought a
- 13:03plot of land with the money he was paid for his crime, he fell
- 13:07headlong and burst open, and all his entrails poured out. Everybody in Jerusalem
- 13:13heard about it, and the plot came to be called the Bloody Acre in
- 13:16their language. I'm not going to try to pronounce it. No, I
- 13:20won't try now. In the Book of the Psalms, it says, reduce
- 13:24his encampment to ruin, and leave his tent unoccupied, and again let someone
- 13:28else take over his office out of the men who have been with us the
- 13:33whole time at the Lord Jesus, that the Lord Jesus Christ was living with
- 13:37us from the time when John was baptizing until the day he was taken up
- 13:43from us, one must be appointed to serve as witness to his resurrection.
- 13:48Having nominated two candidates, Joseph notice bar Bar Sabbaths whose surname was Justice,
- 13:56and Matthias, they prayed, Lord, you can everyone's heart show us,
- 14:01therefore, which of these two you have chosen to take over this ministry of
- 14:05the Apostlate, which Judas abandoned to go to his proper place. They then
- 14:09drew lots for them the lat phil On Matthias, and he was listed as
- 14:13one of the twelve Apostles. The apostle. It is an office, and
- 14:20very clear in Acts the apostles knew they had been ordained commissioned by God.
- 14:26There were to be twelve, and Judas had fallen away, and another one
- 14:30had to be anointed ordained to take his place. I believe was Scott Hunt
- 14:37in one of his series he said, I think it was quite in the
- 14:41riems. He said, would really be good if we listened to this translation.
- 14:45Let another man his bishopric take It was an office the apostlate or the
- 14:50bishopric had to be filled. And you drive through like countryside and the south
- 14:56now and you'll see apostle Billy Bob's going to be at the first Pentecostal church
- 15:01of whatever tonight. No, he's not an apostle. Okay, he may
- 15:07be a minister, anybody can minister. He may be actually a member of
- 15:15a church. But he's by no means an apostle. Jesus gave to the
- 15:20Catholic Church the apostle it and every cardinal priest that has been ordained since has
- 15:26filled that office. They are the ones who ordained priests. Acts six one
- 15:33through six. About this time when the number of disciples was increasing, that
- 15:37Helenists made a complaint against the Hebrews in the daily distribution of their own widows
- 15:43being overlooked. So the twelve call it a full meaning of the disciples and
- 15:48address him. It would not be right for to select the word of God
- 15:52so as to give out food. You brothers, must select from among yourself
- 15:56seven men of good reputation, filled with the spirit, with wisdom, and
- 16:00with wisdom, to whom we can hand over this duty. We ourselves will
- 16:03continue to vote ourselves to prayer and to the service of the world Word,
- 16:08and to the service of the Word the whole assembly will the whole Assembly approved
- 16:14of this proposal and elected Stephen, a man full of faith and of the
- 16:18Holy Spirit. Together with Philip, Phrocreus nicanor Timon, Parmenas and Nicolas of
- 16:26Anioch took a convert to Judaism. They presented these to the apostles, and
- 16:33after prayer they laid their hands on them again. The apostles, okay,
- 16:40the Church is a kingdom of God. There are officers in the kingdom.
- 16:44The king appoints his officers. The apostles had the full authority of Christ,
- 16:49just as the officer of the king would speak with the king's authority in a
- 16:57earthly kingdom. They differentiate offices within the church, rolls, you know,
- 17:07bishops, priests, deacons, etc. Missionaries even and how did they seal
- 17:15it. They laid their hands on them. When a priest is ordained by
- 17:19a bishop, sometimes by a cardinal, that is how it's done. He
- 17:26puts his hands on him, he prays over him, and he confers his
- 17:30authority to the next man, one generation to another. And the way it's
- 17:36been done for two thousand years. I think we said we had what three
- 17:41to wrap up? Was actually just two, wasn't it. Yeah. It
- 17:44was annointing the sick and holy orders. So that wraps up what the Bible
- 17:48says about the sacraments. Tomorrow we will get into what the early Church says
- 17:56about the sacraments. The way to know if the Catholic Church is the true
- 18:02church is if it still has the authority and is an agreement with the apostles.
- 18:08We've just discussed what the apostles said. We just discussed what Jesus said.
- 18:14The apostles were in agreement with Jesus, and there every generation of priests
- 18:19and doctors of the church, and you know, every the church itself is
- 18:23still under the authority and in agreement with Apostles. So tomorrow we're going to
- 18:27get into the dak We're going back to the earliest Christian document not contained in
- 18:34the Bible. Had it been contained in the Bible, everybody be Catholic.
- 18:41It's a darned shame, honestly that the Apostles, when they authorized and decided
- 18:48and their immediate successors actually what books would be in the Bible, did not
- 18:55include the dak known, which means the Teaching of the Twelve This is actually
- 19:00the teaching of the Twelve Apostles, the very first manual of what Christians believe.
- 19:07What day we go to church, how we have our Mass, what
- 19:11we do at Mass, the prayers we say, the Eucharis, the whole
- 19:15bit. Had the d doc been included in the Bible, everybody be Catholic
- 19:21because they couldn't. They couldn't say they believed in the Bible and not go
- 19:23to Mass and receive the Eucharist. I mean, yeah, there would be
- 19:29no question of do we go church on Sunday because it says specifically they transferred
- 19:33the Christian day of worship from the Jewish Sabbath to the Christian Sunday, the
- 19:37day our Lord rose. But you know, there's probably a very good reason
- 19:41it's not in there, and it has to do with free will and God
- 19:47giving us every opportunity to have our own way. We have to turn to
- 19:52God with our will, and you know, yeah, it's probably a very
- 20:00a good reason why he wanted his faithful to have to try a bit harder,
- 20:06to have to learn a little bit more, to have to be well.
- 20:11He wanted his faith would have to be faithful to the teachings of the
- 20:14church. You know, he said he came into the world not to judge
- 20:19the world. You judge yourself. I mean, you make your own decisions,
- 20:25and if you keep his commandments, then you're one of his. And
- 20:30if you choose another path, you've made that choice. If the d DOC
- 20:34had been in there, maybe it would have taken away a little bit of
- 20:37people's ability to choose to do the wrong thing, because you can't do the
- 20:42right thing. If you do the right thing without consciously choosing it, it's
- 20:47not to your credit. It's only to your credit if you have two options,
- 20:51the wrong thing and the right thing, and you choose the right thing,
- 20:53which is generally speaking, the more difficult, more and pleasant, the
- 20:56harder thing to do. So anyway, y'all, we've wrapped up one section.
- 21:02We're gonna wrap up this whole series tomorrow. Y'all have a great evening.
- 21:07I will talk to you tomorrow. And remember the words of Saint Padripia.
- 21:11Pray, hope, and don't worry. Remember the words of Jesus.
- 21:14I am with you unto the end of the age. I remember his words.
- 21:19You know, consider consider the lilies of the field. I mean,
- 21:23you know we have He will provide for our needs. When we pray the
- 21:27our Father, we pray for our daily bread. We don't pray for tomorrow's
- 21:30bread. We don't pray for ten years worth of bread up front. Sometimes
- 21:34just being sustained by our daily bread, which is actually the Eucharist. Well,
- 21:41it's always enough, So worry for nothing, threat not. As the
- 21:49Bible says, trust in God's promises. We know the story against y'all have
- 21:56a great evening.
