- 2:30Speaker 5: We're going to talk about everything that you guys need
- 2:32Speaker 5: to hear, you love to hear. So forty five minutes
- 2:37Speaker 5: an hour. What I need from you guys is just
- 2:38Speaker 5: to pay attention and be quiet. Please please, please, please please.
- 2:43Speaker 5: I know it's a lot going on, it's exciting, you know,
- 2:45Speaker 5: it's always dope to do a live interview, but we
- 2:47Speaker 5: want to just give our guests the most respect it's possible.
- 2:51Speaker 5: So got it. All right, let's get into this. So
- 2:55Speaker 5: before I start once again, I want to give a
- 2:57Speaker 5: shout out to Ally for sponsoring this dope activation. I
- 3:00Speaker 5: want to give a shout out to United Masters, and
- 3:03Speaker 5: I want to get I want.
- 3:05Speaker 4: To give a shout out Steve out of the building.
- 3:07Speaker 5: The commissioners here, shout out, shout out to the Commission
- 3:09Speaker 5: of Steve Stout. Oh, Steve Stout six months ago what
- 3:13Speaker 5: ern Aalisha was. Now you're scared to see it in person,
- 3:16Speaker 5: but shout out to Steve Stout. The Commission of Ladies
- 3:18Speaker 5: and gentlemen, give a round them employs. We see something,
- 3:24Speaker 5: all right, call it. I want to I want to
- 3:26Speaker 5: get right into this so everybody sees where you are now,
- 3:29Speaker 5: but it's a long journey to get here actually from
- 3:33Speaker 5: New Orleans originally.
- 3:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I was born in New Orleans, but I was
- 3:36Speaker 4: raised in Florida. You know. I wrapped the three oh
- 3:39Speaker 4: five Miami.
- 3:40Speaker 7: I've been in Miami for over twenty eight years, so
- 3:44Speaker 7: you know what I mean, this is my home. But
- 3:45Speaker 7: definitely I love New Orleans. I still have family over there,
- 3:49Speaker 7: and I did a lot of great things over there too,
- 3:51Speaker 7: show you know what I mean. We cousins, you know,
- 3:53Speaker 7: New Orleans, Florida, and I was blessed to be raised
- 3:56Speaker 7: in Florida though.
- 3:58Speaker 5: So I want to get into this conversation. You said
- 4:00Speaker 5: something dope on a video I saw where you said
- 4:03Speaker 5: you had the decision to make you could be a
- 4:04Speaker 5: radio DJ or the biggest DJ so and then you
- 4:08Speaker 5: transcended even being a DJ. So when did that click
- 4:12Speaker 5: in your mind from actually you know, selling mixtapes turntables,
- 4:17Speaker 5: that you had a vision that one day you was
- 4:19Speaker 5: going to be DJ callen?
- 4:21Speaker 7: I mean, you know my, you know my when I
- 4:24Speaker 7: was a kid on the radio station or just even
- 4:28Speaker 7: in my garage DJ and you know they always try
- 4:31Speaker 7: to put me in a box. You know what I'm saying, like,
- 4:33Speaker 7: you only can do this and on the radio station.
- 4:36Speaker 7: The reason why I said that was the blessing I
- 4:39Speaker 7: got the opportunity to finally get on radio. I'm saying,
- 4:41Speaker 7: there's a whole story before that, but actually to get
- 4:44Speaker 7: on radio was it was a mission.
- 4:46Speaker 4: What I'm saying.
- 4:47Speaker 7: They said I couldn't have my own night show when
- 4:49Speaker 7: it was number one for over thirteen fourteen years.
- 4:52Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying.
- 4:53Speaker 7: They said I couldn't have my own mixed show. I
- 4:55Speaker 7: ended up doing multiple mixed shows on the radio station.
- 4:59Speaker 7: I did Pirate Radio, and then I was blessed to.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Do radio with Luke Luke.
- 5:04Speaker 7: My brother Luke had a show called Luke Show and
- 5:07Speaker 7: he asked me to be his host and his DJ.
- 5:09Speaker 7: And then when he left to go on tour and
- 5:11Speaker 7: then he stopped doing radio, I ended up taking over,
- 5:14Speaker 7: you know, the Friday night slot. But the people that
- 5:18Speaker 7: used to you know that we used to run the station,
- 5:20Speaker 7: they have so much love for me, and I big
- 5:22Speaker 7: them up. But like you know, the number one thing
- 5:24Speaker 7: in radio, they always say the DJ or the disc job.
- 5:30Speaker 7: They always say, you can't be bigger than the radio,
- 5:33Speaker 7: the radio station and that was never like my mentality
- 5:36Speaker 7: to say I'm trying to be bigger than the radio station.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Now I'm trying to.
- 5:39Speaker 7: Be the biggest you know what I'm saying, not just
- 5:42Speaker 7: the radio station, but so like and I mean that
- 5:45Speaker 7: in a beautiful way, in a humble way, but very
- 5:49Speaker 7: confident at the same time.
- 5:51Speaker 4: So you know, I did it my way.
- 5:54Speaker 7: I did certain things, but I would get suspended for
- 5:57Speaker 7: doing it my way, you see, I'm saying because I
- 6:00Speaker 7: believe if I believed.
- 6:01Speaker 4: In the record, you know what.
- 6:02Speaker 7: I'm saying, I would go crazy with it. And I
- 6:05Speaker 7: wanted to, you know, people to feel the passion. I
- 6:08Speaker 7: felt the passions from the streets. So I just kept
- 6:10Speaker 7: that energy and I was playing music for the people.
- 6:13Speaker 7: And you know, but I had to break rules to
- 6:15Speaker 7: do certain things like that. You know, just if I
- 6:18Speaker 7: played one record, might play for three hours straight, but
- 6:21Speaker 7: like you know, then I would get suspended for two
- 6:23Speaker 7: weeks out of that and almost get fired, you know
- 6:26Speaker 7: what I'm saying. But if I believed in something, you
- 6:29Speaker 7: know what I mean, I went all out.
- 6:30Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying. I felt like that was
- 6:31Speaker 4: my purpose when it came down of breaking records. You
- 6:34Speaker 4: know what I'm saying.
- 6:35Speaker 7: I could have did it the regular way and just
- 6:37Speaker 7: been a robot, or I could have did it my
- 6:40Speaker 7: way and still make the radio station number one and
- 6:44Speaker 7: still you know, represent the people out there, you know
- 6:47Speaker 7: what I'm saying.
- 6:47Speaker 3: So when did it go from I'm breaking other people's
- 6:50Speaker 3: records to now I'm going to create the records and
- 6:53Speaker 3: break my own, Because that's a transition in the self.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Right now you've become the artist in a sense where
- 6:58Speaker 3: like I'm gonna make myself hout.
- 7:00Speaker 4: When that happened, well, I mean even before I was
- 7:03Speaker 4: on radio. If you know my.
- 7:05Speaker 7: Early days of DJing and producer, if you ever caught me,
- 7:08Speaker 7: see when I was coming up, there was no Instagram
- 7:11Speaker 7: nor Twitter. So you know in Miami, I would play
- 7:14Speaker 7: at Levels in Mansion and Rockets Island and Spirits and
- 7:19Speaker 7: you know every strip club you know, just like everywhere,
- 7:25Speaker 7: but at that time wasn't Instagram or Twitter. So if
- 7:29Speaker 7: anybody ever experienced one of my sets, if I was
- 7:33Speaker 7: playing in Brooklyn at the Omni, they changed that club
- 7:36Speaker 7: name about thousand times because that club was crazy, you
- 7:39Speaker 7: know what I'm saying, Like you walk in there, they
- 7:40Speaker 7: had Rottweilers and bats. That's security, you know what I'm saying.
- 7:46Speaker 4: So you know what I mean.
- 7:48Speaker 7: Like my sets always felt like I was an artist
- 7:52Speaker 7: besides the DJ.
- 7:53Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying.
- 7:54Speaker 7: So if I would rip rip it down on the turntables,
- 7:57Speaker 7: you know, I would bring certain type of energy and
- 8:00Speaker 7: somehow would end up being in front of the stage
- 8:03Speaker 7: and behind the churn tables on all my sets, you
- 8:06Speaker 7: know what I'm saying.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Like I came to fuck up the place. You know
- 8:09Speaker 4: what I'm saying.
- 8:09Speaker 7: Like, you know I come from hip hop, but also
- 8:13Speaker 7: come from a dance shaw foundation.
- 8:16Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying. So I'm a sound boy.
- 8:18Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying. I'm a true sound killer
- 8:20Speaker 4: sound boy. You know what I mean.
- 8:22Speaker 2: So I can appreciate that.
- 8:24Speaker 5: Yeah, shout out to the West Indian. Massive choice you're making.
- 8:26Speaker 5: So that's a fact he appreciates that. Let me ask
- 8:29Speaker 5: you about Snapchat changed the whole direction of the situation
- 8:33Speaker 5: with you and people don't really realize when you started snatch. Well,
- 8:37Speaker 5: first of all, twenty fifteen Snapchat. Anybody watches Mark on
- 8:40Speaker 5: Monday's make Some Noise. Snapchat currently has a seventy five
- 8:47Speaker 5: billion dollar valuation that publicly traded company. You guys all
- 8:49Speaker 5: know that, right, But when he started, they wasn't publicly traded,
- 8:54Speaker 5: So I would like to say that he helped boost
- 8:56Speaker 5: the evaluation. Obviously we're gonna say that that's a biggil,
- 8:59Speaker 5: that's a fact. But when you started Snapchat, it was
- 9:03Speaker 5: actually from a dark place, right.
- 9:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I was. I was fully independent. You know.
- 9:10Speaker 7: I felt like at one time I felt like the
- 9:12Speaker 7: music I was putting out number one hits, but I
- 9:17Speaker 7: felt like the industry was trying to block me out.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Maybe that was just the way I felt.
- 9:25Speaker 7: I don't know, So you know, I went truly independent,
- 9:30Speaker 7: and I always put my money in everything I do,
- 9:34Speaker 7: you know what I'm saying, But at that time, I raally,
- 9:37Speaker 7: you know, put it all on the lines. So like
- 9:40Speaker 7: I put everything on this album called I Changed a Lot,
- 9:43Speaker 7: And all my albums, the titles represent what I'm going
- 9:48Speaker 7: through at that time when I'm making it and just
- 9:50Speaker 7: the energy. So all my titles is that vibe, you
- 9:53Speaker 7: know what I'm saying. So that album was called I Changed
- 9:56Speaker 7: a Lot because like asking me a question, say, cal
- 10:01Speaker 7: you changed changed man a lot? You know what I'm saying,
- 10:07Speaker 7: and the reason why I changed a lot. And change
- 10:09Speaker 7: is good as long as you do it for the better,
- 10:13Speaker 7: to be greater. You know how some people like, Okay,
- 10:15Speaker 7: you know you're friend, are you change? You ain't the same?
- 10:18Speaker 7: I tell them, I'm definitely not the same. I'm actually better.
- 10:23Speaker 7: I became a better person and I worked smarter, you
- 10:28Speaker 7: know what I'm saying. Then I then I ended up
- 10:30Speaker 7: having kids, and now you know what I'm saying, I
- 10:33Speaker 7: love fatherhood and you know, my life has just became
- 10:36Speaker 7: better because of I changed a lot. So at that time,
- 10:42Speaker 7: I put this album out and it was probably my
- 10:44Speaker 7: worst sales. And that's that's right when the streaming was
- 10:49Speaker 7: about to kick in. And even when the streaming kicked in,
- 10:53Speaker 7: it still was new, you know what I'm saying. So
- 10:55Speaker 7: I got caught up in the middle of that. And
- 10:57Speaker 7: it wasn't even about the sales. It's just I was
- 10:59Speaker 7: going independent. So you know, I put it all on
- 11:02Speaker 7: the line. Now, got I sacrificed the mortgage money. I mean,
- 11:06Speaker 7: you know, I've sacrificed the car notes. You know, I
- 11:08Speaker 7: take care of my mother and father, like I put
- 11:10Speaker 7: it on the line.
- 11:11Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying not for people don't understand it,
- 11:13Speaker 5: like supporting to talk about that, Like there's a lot
- 11:16Speaker 5: of entrepreneurs in here, and it's like going independent, you
- 11:19Speaker 5: being an entrepreneur the same thing. You got to put
- 11:21Speaker 5: it on the line, and sometimes it doesn't work.
- 11:23Speaker 7: I put it all on the line, like I like,
- 11:26Speaker 7: I put it all on them, like like like all
- 11:30Speaker 7: of it.
- 11:30Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying.
- 11:31Speaker 7: But when I did it, and my friends will tell you,
- 11:36Speaker 7: I would say, y'all, I'm about to do this, this
- 11:37Speaker 7: and that and that we about to be fucked excuse
- 11:39Speaker 7: my language, about to be fucked up for a second.
- 11:42Speaker 4: But it's gonna come back big. I feel it, you
- 11:46Speaker 4: know what I'm saying.
- 11:46Speaker 7: Because I was show I was showing the trials and tribulations.
- 11:50Speaker 7: I'm like God doing this for a reason. It's nothing
- 11:53Speaker 7: I can't handle. The only difference is it's like I'm
- 11:56Speaker 7: rolling the dice and I'm like, you know, I still
- 11:59Speaker 7: got to answer to my mom, like you know that
- 12:01Speaker 7: I gotta pay her bills to so I.
- 12:03Speaker 4: Can, you know what I mean? So how to like
- 12:05Speaker 4: you know what I mean? Like you know what I mean?
- 12:07Speaker 4: Like really it was a light.
- 12:09Speaker 2: It was the light, so it was the light.
- 12:12Speaker 7: So I went on the So in the music business,
- 12:20Speaker 7: I'm not one of the guys that hug their pillow
- 12:22Speaker 7: and slob over the pillow and and don't hustle. I'm
- 12:26Speaker 7: one of them guys that go all out promote, go
- 12:29Speaker 7: to every radio station.
- 12:30Speaker 6: You know.
- 12:31Speaker 4: I'm talking about that time.
- 12:32Speaker 7: I would I do everything now, but at that time
- 12:34Speaker 7: it was on another level because the technology wasn't the
- 12:38Speaker 7: way it is now. So when you put an album out,
- 12:43Speaker 7: especially at that time, you know, artists usually have to
- 12:46Speaker 7: be on the road for damn near the whole year,
- 12:49Speaker 7: I'm saying, And we usually be busy the whole year
- 12:53Speaker 7: and then, but that doesn't mean we're making money some people.
- 12:58Speaker 7: You know, it depends what levels you are at that time.
- 13:00Speaker 7: For me, I was just going state to state and
- 13:04Speaker 7: I wasn't flying at that time, so I'm on a
- 13:07Speaker 7: bus or a van and we going everywhere.
- 13:10Speaker 4: So I would do a gig and the gig will
- 13:12Speaker 4: be like.
- 13:13Speaker 7: I'll make like five thousand dollars, and that was just
- 13:17Speaker 7: pay for the gas on the bus, not even on
- 13:21Speaker 7: the driver. And then I had to get my room
- 13:24Speaker 7: and like seven other rooms. So any money I made.
- 13:28Speaker 7: I still came out of my pocket. But I say,
- 13:30Speaker 7: I'm gonna go do all this because I'm supposed to
- 13:33Speaker 7: do this, because I can't expect nothing to come to
- 13:35Speaker 7: me as like here, you're gonna win. So I went
- 13:38Speaker 7: out there to show my face and let you know
- 13:41Speaker 7: how much I believe in my music and how much
- 13:43Speaker 7: I believe in my town when I'm doing a show,
- 13:46Speaker 7: when I'm ripping it down and doing what I gotta do.
- 13:49Speaker 7: So to make a long story short, it's like November, now,
- 13:54Speaker 7: you know, and I'm finally coming home. So I come
- 13:58Speaker 7: to my crib and I'm all right, man, I'm like, man,
- 14:01Speaker 7: we've been going crazy and I'm like, I ain't come
- 14:04Speaker 7: back with no bag. I spent all the money on
- 14:08Speaker 7: just traveling to promote myself. So I'm telling my girl,
- 14:13Speaker 7: I'm like, yo, you're miss saying I don't know.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Mom.
- 14:16Speaker 7: I'm like, you know, I'm talking to me, you know, you
- 14:17Speaker 7: know my wife, And I'm like, yo, Ma, you know
- 14:19Speaker 7: how I said, Ma? We you know, I ain't never
- 14:22Speaker 7: really taught you like this, but we're gonna be good.
- 14:25Speaker 7: It's just I'm tired of this, just tired of this.
- 14:30Speaker 7: And when I felt like that. I was like, man,
- 14:32Speaker 7: I don't want to lose the love, because you have
- 14:35Speaker 7: to love what you do to be successful. So Mokes,
- 14:40Speaker 7: my man Mokes and Hassan Whiteside, they used to play
- 14:43Speaker 7: for Miami.
- 14:43Speaker 4: He kept telling me about Snapchat. You know, I'm on Twitter,
- 14:48Speaker 4: I'm on Instagram.
- 14:48Speaker 7: You know, you gotta be on your social media to
- 14:50Speaker 7: promote your business and your greatness and post a picture
- 14:53Speaker 7: of hopefully somebody will smile. I use my social media
- 14:56Speaker 7: propositivity and motivation and the hustle and the bring awareness
- 15:00Speaker 7: to the greatness, you know I'm saying.
- 15:02Speaker 4: So I finally get to snap. I don't even know
- 15:06Speaker 4: how to use it.
- 15:06Speaker 7: So I'm finally home, so the guys are home, and
- 15:09Speaker 7: so it's the holiday times, my birthdays of November, Thanksgiving,
- 15:13Speaker 7: it's December coming, so I'm chilling.
- 15:16Speaker 4: It's holidays.
- 15:17Speaker 7: So I'm around my backyard and I'm just snapping.
- 15:21Speaker 4: I don't even know who's following. I don't even know
- 15:23Speaker 4: how to work the follow button. Nothing.
- 15:25Speaker 7: I really don't like when it came at that time.
- 15:28Speaker 7: So I'm snapping, like, yo, they don't want me to win,
- 15:30Speaker 7: you know what I'm saying. They trying to finish me.
- 15:32Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying. I was just speaking for
- 15:33Speaker 4: my art, you know what I mean.
- 15:35Speaker 7: I'm looking at my grass. The grass is all tore up.
- 15:38Speaker 7: I'm like, I say, you know, I saw water in
- 15:42Speaker 7: my grass. I'm like, and it started turning green. I'm like,
- 15:44Speaker 7: oh shit, oh shit. So I'm snapping this, but this
- 15:49Speaker 7: is like personal. I don't know who watching, I really don't.
- 15:53Speaker 7: And I'm like, but if it inspired me, Like, yo,
- 15:55Speaker 7: look when you take care of something, it turned out
- 15:58Speaker 7: to be beautiful. And the reason why I'm talking, I
- 16:01Speaker 7: gotta get to the closure. So boom, I'm like doing
- 16:06Speaker 7: this for a month and just talking. So I started
- 16:08Speaker 7: getting texas and calls.
- 16:09Speaker 4: At your cavin. I love that talk. They don't want
- 16:12Speaker 4: you to win.
- 16:12Speaker 7: And you know what I'm saying, this and that and
- 16:15Speaker 7: and the keys and I'm like, I'm like.
- 16:17Speaker 3: This episode of Ernie Lisia is brought to you by McDonald's,
- 16:20Speaker 3: proudly serving community since nineteen sixty five, McDonald's is more
- 16:24Speaker 3: than just a place to get tasty, affordable food. Over
- 16:26Speaker 3: the years, it's become a staple in our community. It's
- 16:29Speaker 3: the place you're guaranteed to see teammates after a big
- 16:31Speaker 3: game because everyone is headed to Mickey D's win or lose.
- 16:35Speaker 3: When I stop in for my morning breakfast of three
- 16:38Speaker 3: hot cakes and a hash brown, seeing students using the
- 16:40Speaker 3: Wi Fi for their social.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Media is all part of the routine.
- 16:44Speaker 3: It's become the epicenter of the community, whether it's gathering
- 16:47Speaker 3: for a birthday party and we've all been to a
- 16:49Speaker 3: McDonald's birthday party or the place that someone receives their
- 16:53Speaker 3: first job. McDonald's grows with his patrons, which makes it
- 16:56Speaker 3: the go to place. Generation after generation fight McDonald's.
- 17:03Speaker 7: I'm loving it just being me like, you know, me
- 17:06Speaker 7: like and then my close friends, I talk like that
- 17:09Speaker 7: all the time. So I'm starting to getting ed. Shearon
- 17:13Speaker 7: calling me like, Yo, that talk is crazy. You know
- 17:15Speaker 7: what I'm saying. I'm like, you know, justin Bieber text me, yo,
- 17:20Speaker 7: I felt that. Or so one day my phone broke
- 17:25Speaker 7: so how to go to the Apple store and I
- 17:26Speaker 7: ain't leave my house for like a month and a half.
- 17:28Speaker 7: I told you I was in depressed, but I was
- 17:30Speaker 7: trying to figure out what I'm gonna you know, how
- 17:33Speaker 7: I'm gonna take it to the next level. But it
- 17:35Speaker 7: wasn't about so much to hustle. I'm like, nobody can
- 17:38Speaker 7: outwork DJ Calla, that's not happening. It was more of
- 17:43Speaker 7: how to go into a spiritual mode and find peace
- 17:46Speaker 7: and love and and and something to give.
- 17:50Speaker 4: Me that vibe, you know what I mean.
- 17:52Speaker 7: So I went to the Apple Store because I be
- 17:54Speaker 7: jet skiing a lot and my phone got water in it.
- 17:57Speaker 7: And I went to the Apple Store and the mall.
- 18:00Speaker 7: I walk in there, like, Yo, my phone broke. I
- 18:03Speaker 7: need to fix it. You know, there's DJ call and
- 18:06Speaker 7: they know DJ call I put out tons of albums,
- 18:08Speaker 7: tons of hits.
- 18:08Speaker 4: You know, people asked for autographs.
- 18:10Speaker 2: You know.
- 18:10Speaker 4: I'm saying I'm grateful. Boom boom boom.
- 18:12Speaker 7: But I turn around there's like ten thousand people in
- 18:18Speaker 7: the store and then like like, so I'm looking around,
- 18:23Speaker 7: like is the Beatles here or is it? Just like no,
- 18:26Speaker 7: I know, I got people. It was crazy, So I'm like, Yo,
- 18:31Speaker 7: this shit is crazy. They all started screaming, lying and
- 18:34Speaker 7: major key and they were just showing so much love
- 18:36Speaker 7: and I was like, man, this shit touched my heart.
- 18:39Speaker 4: So I go back to the crib.
- 18:42Speaker 7: I told my queen I was like something going on,
- 18:47Speaker 7: and it was the beginning of the snapchat and then
- 18:49Speaker 7: from there I can keep going.
- 18:51Speaker 3: So at any point, because at the time we spoke
- 18:54Speaker 3: about it, we actually infacitely said Snapchat's done. We didn't
- 18:57Speaker 3: see what was building. At any point a chat reach
- 19:00Speaker 3: out and say, you know what, Kelly, we need to
- 19:02Speaker 3: do something with you. Here's equity in the company. Did
- 19:05Speaker 3: they have conversations with you? I mean, based on the
- 19:07Speaker 3: growth of the platform, The owner, Evan.
- 19:11Speaker 7: His people reached out, not to not to do no business,
- 19:14Speaker 7: but just reached out, like, yo, you you know you're
- 19:18Speaker 7: showing this app love. And and one time I was
- 19:20Speaker 7: in Calli and I went to spoke at one of
- 19:24Speaker 7: their employees, Summits whatever, and I met the owner, you know,
- 19:29Speaker 7: me out the gay. I'm like, yo, what we doing
- 19:32Speaker 7: because I got this on fire, you know what I'm saying.
- 19:35Speaker 7: But I was just telling him. I'm like, I wasn't
- 19:38Speaker 7: expecting that. I was just telling him like, I'm really
- 19:41Speaker 7: just being myself, and I was saying and as far
- 19:45Speaker 7: as the business, he never did no business with me.
- 19:47Speaker 7: And I got love for him. But that's his loss,
- 19:50Speaker 7: even though he he you know, I'm sure he's a billionaire.
- 19:53Speaker 7: I'm saying we could have did some other great things,
- 19:56Speaker 7: but what I learned about the Snapchat or Instagram or
- 20:00Speaker 7: Twitter with me, what happened was all my fans I
- 20:04Speaker 7: had and the people that loved me know who Calvin was.
- 20:08Speaker 7: But what happened was the whole world found out. And
- 20:11Speaker 7: then I end up not being a secret because a
- 20:14Speaker 7: lot of my people that know me from day one
- 20:16Speaker 7: know I've been like this my whole life. And you know,
- 20:20Speaker 7: you know, what's that one little thing that be going
- 20:22Speaker 7: viral a the time, Like if somebody cook good or
- 20:25Speaker 7: do something good, and they're like, yo, why you ain't
- 20:27Speaker 7: blow up yet because my friend ain't posted when you
- 20:29Speaker 7: know that one little thing that'd been going I feel
- 20:32Speaker 7: that because I've been kept a secret for so long,
- 20:38Speaker 7: and when the world found out, it was like we
- 20:42Speaker 7: got love for Calvin. And then they're like, and that's Calid.
- 20:46Speaker 7: That also puts out our favorite records, you know what
- 20:49Speaker 7: I'm saying.
- 20:50Speaker 4: So it's a blessing, you know what I'm saying.
- 20:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I want to talk to you about that because
- 20:54Speaker 5: I don't want to breeze over to social media conversation
- 20:57Speaker 5: because shots of my brother while and we had a
- 20:58Speaker 5: conversation he was telling me how social media changed his
- 21:01Speaker 5: life and Instagram changed our life. And the thing about
- 21:05Speaker 5: the ironic thing about the Instagram thing is I wanted
- 21:07Speaker 5: to do what we're doing now on Instagram seven years ago,
- 21:11Speaker 5: but I got held up because I figured, like people
- 21:15Speaker 5: might not really dig it, and you know, public perception
- 21:18Speaker 5: and stuff like that, so I didn't. I didn't do it.
- 21:21Speaker 5: Long story short, Everything that I thought would happen if
- 21:24Speaker 5: I did do it happened and ten times more So.
- 21:27Speaker 5: It's a lot of people that are not actually taking
- 21:30Speaker 5: advantage of social media or just anything in general, because
- 21:33Speaker 5: you think that public perception, what somebody's going to think
- 21:36Speaker 5: through you is not going to hit and you're really
- 21:38Speaker 5: doing yourself with disservice because, like you said, you're a secret.
- 21:41Speaker 5: The world needs to actually know you. So how did
- 21:44Speaker 5: you act? Because there's a lot of people that have
- 21:45Speaker 5: social media influence but they still can't make any money.
- 21:48Speaker 5: How did you once you realize okay, you got the
- 21:50Speaker 5: vibe on social media, now, how did you turn that
- 21:53Speaker 5: into actually churning and turn it into an impire to
- 21:55Speaker 5: actually build off of.
- 21:57Speaker 4: That, I mean social media. You know what I'm saying.
- 21:59Speaker 2: I feel like it.
- 22:00Speaker 7: You use it the right way, you're gonna get great results.
- 22:03Speaker 7: And besides the business, before we get to the making
- 22:06Speaker 7: money thing, I feel like being authentic is is the
- 22:10Speaker 7: biggest thing. You should always be yourself, you know what
- 22:14Speaker 7: I'm saying, So authentic is the key. But again, I
- 22:19Speaker 7: use social media to bring awareness to if it's my music,
- 22:24Speaker 7: to the greatness of it, or even if it's to
- 22:28Speaker 7: post a picture of a sunlight.
- 22:30Speaker 4: You know what I mean.
- 22:31Speaker 7: I just I want you to feel the light you
- 22:33Speaker 7: I'm saying, I want you to feel the love.
- 22:36Speaker 4: Now.
- 22:37Speaker 7: I'm blessed to where, you know, to have many hats.
- 22:40Speaker 7: You know, I'm a music exec. I'm an artist, I'm
- 22:43Speaker 7: a producer, I'm a DJ, I'm a father, I'm a friend.
- 22:48Speaker 4: I'm in the real estate.
- 22:50Speaker 7: You know, I'm in the retail I'm in the restaurants,
- 22:53Speaker 7: I'm in the I'm into it all I'm saying. And
- 22:56Speaker 7: we're supposed to use our social media because it's really
- 23:02Speaker 7: a free commercial for your business, you know, if you're
- 23:07Speaker 7: promoting your business. And one thing I learned about good
- 23:10Speaker 7: and great business. If you do good business, you get
- 23:14Speaker 7: good business back. If you do great business, you get
- 23:16Speaker 7: great business back. And the mean what I'm saying is
- 23:19Speaker 7: it's like you have a restaurant and the food is good,
- 23:26Speaker 7: people are gonna come back. And if you promote it
- 23:29Speaker 7: on your Instagram and the work it out that that
- 23:33Speaker 7: that food is good, it's only gonna build and build.
- 23:37Speaker 7: If you're an artist, you have there's no excuse for
- 23:41Speaker 7: any artists.
- 23:43Speaker 4: If you rap rap right.
- 23:47Speaker 7: In this camera and people like it, they gonna it's
- 23:50Speaker 7: gonna spread and they get to know your story. So
- 23:55Speaker 7: what I'm trying to tell you, if you put out greatness,
- 23:59Speaker 7: you're gonna get greatness back. And sometimes it don't happen overnight.
- 24:03Speaker 7: It didn't happen overnight for me. Chrissy Jones didn't make
- 24:07Speaker 7: Thriller till he was fifty years old. He made Thriller
- 24:10Speaker 7: when he was fifty. Me when I turned forty, that
- 24:15Speaker 7: was when my biggest success happened. I worked free ninety
- 24:19Speaker 7: percent of my life. Seven percent of my life, I
- 24:24Speaker 7: work for free. And anyone can vouch for that.
- 24:28Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying. But I knew what it
- 24:31Speaker 4: would take.
- 24:32Speaker 2: You know what I mean.
- 24:33Speaker 7: And so your social media, you put out that good stuff,
- 24:37Speaker 7: You're gonna get that good stuff in back.
- 24:40Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 24:41Speaker 4: That's the key.
- 24:42Speaker 2: You said something important.
- 24:43Speaker 3: You said for a while you were a secret, but
- 24:46Speaker 3: you had a gift, right and that gift is being
- 24:47Speaker 3: shown with the world.
- 24:48Speaker 2: But there's another side of that coin.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Now you become super accessible because now everybody knows your life,
- 24:53Speaker 3: They know your queen, your kids are recognizable. How is
- 24:57Speaker 3: that balancing that? Because I feel like all the moments
- 24:59Speaker 3: that you value been grinding for twenty five plus years,
- 25:01Speaker 3: they've prepared you for this moment. But now you have
- 25:04Speaker 3: a family involved. So what's that process? Like, what's the
- 25:06Speaker 3: balance life for you? Deal with all that?
- 25:08Speaker 7: Well, I'm so blessing my queen and my two boys.
- 25:12Speaker 4: You know, that's my life, you know what I'm saying.
- 25:14Speaker 7: Like, so you know, anything you see me do, even
- 25:16Speaker 7: when I speak on this smite, you know, I represent
- 25:19Speaker 7: my family, you know what I'm saying. So I try
- 25:21Speaker 7: to move and do everything perfect, you know what I'm saying.
- 25:26Speaker 4: So that's my life.
- 25:28Speaker 7: My relationship with my queen, she my best friend, you
- 25:31Speaker 7: know what I'm saying, as well as my queen, and
- 25:35Speaker 7: we just got a you know, we have a Our
- 25:38Speaker 7: family is just a real relationship, meaning as in, like,
- 25:42Speaker 7: don't get it twisted. You know what I'm saying, Like
- 25:44Speaker 7: I got the music too loud, She's gonna tell me
- 25:46Speaker 7: to go. You know what I'm saying. But what I'm
- 25:49Speaker 7: saying is how I balance it is. I know y'all
- 25:55Speaker 7: see a lot, but it's a lot you don't mean
- 25:57Speaker 7: he as in there's beautiful other moments that I save
- 26:02Speaker 7: and cherish for the home.
- 26:05Speaker 4: You know what I mean.
- 26:06Speaker 7: And when I post my kids on social media playing basketball,
- 26:10Speaker 7: if it's a picture or something like that, I'm a
- 26:14Speaker 7: fan of my kids. You know what I'm saying. And
- 26:16Speaker 7: I know one thing. It makes me smile when I
- 26:20Speaker 7: see it, not just because of my son, somebody else
- 26:22Speaker 7: my post or daughter, their son, and I see the
- 26:24Speaker 7: when the family makes me smile and inspires me. So
- 26:28Speaker 7: anytime I can bring joy and happiness in this world,
- 26:33Speaker 7: I'm gonna do it. I felt like that's what God
- 26:35Speaker 7: wanted me to do, is to bring love and unity.
- 26:39Speaker 7: And I'm gonna show you my family love I'm saying,
- 26:43Speaker 7: and and and you know it's just I hope it spreads.
- 26:48Speaker 7: I wanted to spread contagious I'm saying.
- 26:52Speaker 5: One thing I want to. I want to say, I
- 26:54Speaker 5: want to just give everybody a quick gem on social
- 26:56Speaker 5: media is that the algorithm actually rewards organic video. Shot
- 27:00Speaker 5: the thirteenth and create our creative team. But I told them,
- 27:03Speaker 5: and they know, you could pull your cell phone out
- 27:06Speaker 5: and make a selfie video and you can get a
- 27:08Speaker 5: dope video done by Spike Lee or thirteenth and create
- 27:12Speaker 5: the selfie video. Nine times out of ten is gonna
- 27:14Speaker 5: get more views, especially if it's a real.
- 27:17Speaker 4: So that's true, that's true, that's true. Like it's crazy.
- 27:20Speaker 7: I shot my man Ivan, He's gonna be the next
- 27:23Speaker 7: spills Bird.
- 27:25Speaker 4: But I noticed, like you know, the the.
- 27:29Speaker 7: Videos that you edit and make it super dope, and
- 27:31Speaker 7: I love them. I love walking slow motion and you
- 27:34Speaker 7: know what I'm saying, fit get it, you know what
- 27:37Speaker 7: I mean.
- 27:37Speaker 4: I love all that.
- 27:39Speaker 7: But if I just do the natural video, people love
- 27:42Speaker 7: it even more. Shot to Benny in the buildings, my
- 27:45Speaker 7: guy right there.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Love you brother.
- 27:47Speaker 4: So it's like.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Just gonna stand there on us.
- 27:52Speaker 4: The organ that's part of being organic. Even though the
- 27:55Speaker 4: other videos be.
- 27:56Speaker 7: Organic, it's just those state they react better.
- 27:59Speaker 5: You're right, thank you. Let me ask you a question.
- 28:06Speaker 5: You balance being an executive and an artist. So we
- 28:10Speaker 5: always heard, like, you know, it's hard for executives to
- 28:13Speaker 5: be artists as well, because the artists feel like the
- 28:16Speaker 5: executive is always gonna be the biggest artists on the label.
- 28:19Speaker 5: So how have you been able to manage being an
- 28:21Speaker 5: executive being an artist and with some of the challenges
- 28:24Speaker 5: that you have working with artists.
- 28:26Speaker 4: I mean, I I.
- 28:29Speaker 7: Gotta say, every artist that's listening, man, learn to be
- 28:32Speaker 7: executive too.
- 28:35Speaker 2: I was that.
- 28:36Speaker 7: From the minute I came in the game. I learned
- 28:39Speaker 7: to be an executive. But also the love of the
- 28:42Speaker 7: music is my music for the love the talent, and
- 28:47Speaker 7: that's as special. But you also have to know your business,
- 28:52Speaker 7: what I'm saying. And but besides the business too also
- 28:56Speaker 7: you know, always when I was a kid, I always
- 28:58Speaker 7: knew I wanted to be like, you know what I'm saying,
- 29:02Speaker 7: punk Daddy jay Z level.
- 29:04Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying.
- 29:05Speaker 7: I always said that like had their posters and everything
- 29:08Speaker 7: like because they did music, but they did other things too,
- 29:11Speaker 7: you know what I'm saying.
- 29:12Speaker 4: It's clothing this and that.
- 29:13Speaker 7: So and then my mother and father they used to
- 29:15Speaker 7: own like clothing stores, and when I was a kid,
- 29:19Speaker 7: they used to sell close out the trunk and the
- 29:21Speaker 7: flea market, and they would put the what's that bag
- 29:24Speaker 7: that you put around your waist?
- 29:25Speaker 4: What's that called?
- 29:26Speaker 7: They would put the Fannie pack on me and they
- 29:29Speaker 7: would be hustling, and they put the money in my thing.
- 29:31Speaker 7: I'm a little kid, so I'm watching this early. So
- 29:34Speaker 7: then they end up getting a register. So I started
- 29:37Speaker 7: hearing that registered change and they putting money so I
- 29:40Speaker 7: could to see my mom and dad hustle every single day.
- 29:42Speaker 7: And I'm like, man, they take care of us. But
- 29:45Speaker 7: they took me to work with them. So I watched
- 29:47Speaker 7: all that. I was like, man, you know what I'm saying.
- 29:49Speaker 7: So I understood business early, you know what I'm saying.
- 29:52Speaker 7: But I work with artists so great because I understand
- 29:57Speaker 7: the artist side and the business side, so I can
- 30:00Speaker 7: help guide.
- 30:01Speaker 4: For them to be even greater too. You see what
- 30:04Speaker 4: I'm saying.
- 30:05Speaker 7: And you know, being a music exec, you know, like
- 30:09Speaker 7: Benny's right here, Bennie would tell you I was president
- 30:12Speaker 7: of def Jam South. Benny was one of my main
- 30:16Speaker 7: guys in that building, and to this day we work
- 30:19Speaker 7: with each other.
- 30:20Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying.
- 30:21Speaker 7: Like, you know, it's about having great relationships because I
- 30:25Speaker 7: always tell my close friends and I tell everybody here, say,
- 30:29Speaker 7: you're working at a company and no disrespecting, nobody like,
- 30:33Speaker 7: but they're gonna fire you one day. It's just like
- 30:38Speaker 7: it's not even a district.
- 30:40Speaker 4: It's just part of the game.
- 30:42Speaker 7: So I always tell my friend when they act like
- 30:44Speaker 7: they're not like, I'm telling them.
- 30:46Speaker 4: To be great.
- 30:47Speaker 7: You know, if you got to do certain things to
- 30:49Speaker 7: be great, not no, a in a great level, not
- 30:52Speaker 7: a disrespect like do something.
- 30:54Speaker 4: Great, go be great. And sometimes you have to.
- 30:57Speaker 7: Do things that the company doesn't understand, but when it ends,
- 31:00Speaker 7: except whenning, they love it and they understand. But that's
- 31:02Speaker 7: how you're gonna level up. And Benny will let you know.
- 31:04Speaker 7: I would be the guy like I gotta do this
- 31:06Speaker 7: and you can't do that. I'm no, watch me do
- 31:08Speaker 7: this boom I'm doing and like, oh shit, you right,
- 31:11Speaker 7: you know what I'm saying.
- 31:12Speaker 2: So you go.
- 31:14Speaker 7: And I always show people when I should work on ram.
- 31:16Speaker 7: I'm like, they're going to fire you. So remember that
- 31:21Speaker 7: keeping relationships so you can learn to be greater because
- 31:25Speaker 7: it's levels what I'm saying.
- 31:27Speaker 4: So it's just different levels of this shit.
- 31:29Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, I feel that's a fact. We
- 31:32Speaker 2: the best.
- 31:33Speaker 3: That's That's one of the things I've noticed anytime they
- 31:35Speaker 3: ever mentioned Calla's name, is like he deserves this moment.
- 31:39Speaker 3: He's worked so hard, he's been doing this for everybody.
- 31:43Speaker 3: And so the power relationships is really key because I
- 31:45Speaker 3: feel like there's no artists that you can't reach at
- 31:47Speaker 3: this point, and maybe because you've been doing stuff for
- 31:50Speaker 3: freequl on time, can you talk about the power of
- 31:52Speaker 3: networking and keeping relationships and sometimes doing things for free
- 31:55Speaker 3: without an end going side.
- 31:57Speaker 7: I mean, the relationship is so important, not just in

- 37:25Speaker 7: even the person that fired me. I know I'm gonna
- 37:27Speaker 7: work with them again, So I ain't really trip. I
- 37:30Speaker 7: was just like, you know, I might have been like
- 37:33Speaker 7: I'm gonna show you, but I knew I was gonna
- 37:37Speaker 7: end up leveling up. And it's simple, don't burn no
- 37:42Speaker 7: bridges because only God can walk on water.
- 37:45Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying.
- 37:47Speaker 5: That's it major key, all amazing. Let's talk about ghost kitchens.
- 37:53Speaker 2: Let's let's do that.
- 37:54Speaker 5: Man, it's not your banging the building. I don't know
- 37:56Speaker 5: if he's saying no, oh, it's my boy man. So
- 37:58Speaker 5: the first time, if you watch not Your Bingers episode,
- 38:02Speaker 5: that's my boy out of East Baltimore. So inspiring. Kid.
- 38:06Speaker 5: He's the first person that educated us on ghost kitchens.
- 38:10Speaker 5: And if you know what a ghost kitchen is, that
- 38:13Speaker 5: became really big during the pandemic because it's like you
- 38:15Speaker 5: could run three four different restaurants out of one kitchen,
- 38:19Speaker 5: where it's like you have an industrial kitchen like right here,
- 38:22Speaker 5: and you have a Chinese restaurant, you have an Indian restaurant,
- 38:25Speaker 5: and it's on grub Hub, it's on Uber Eats, and
- 38:28Speaker 5: you have a menu, but it's not actually a real restaurant.
- 38:31Speaker 5: That's why it's called ghost restaurants. So we want to
- 38:34Speaker 5: get into this ghost.
- 38:34Speaker 3: Restaurant, yeah, man, Because I mean lately all we hear
- 38:37Speaker 3: been talking about is another wing, another wing, so yeah,
- 38:41Speaker 3: shout out to another wing. So I know you hooked
- 38:44Speaker 3: up with a Reef, which is a Miami based tech company.
- 38:47Speaker 3: Can you talk about that process getting connected with them?
- 38:50Speaker 3: And obviously I'm sure you don't get involved in anything
- 38:53Speaker 3: and you absolutely love it, so I'm assuming you love wings.
- 38:56Speaker 2: What was that? I mean?
- 38:58Speaker 7: The ghost kitchen thing is showed genius. It's really incredible
- 39:03Speaker 7: because it goes back to what I was saying, like
- 39:07Speaker 7: we own a shot of eat Class. I got a
- 39:08Speaker 7: few restaurants with eat Class called the Liquor. I don't
- 39:11Speaker 7: know if you ever been a licking finger licking, So
- 39:15Speaker 7: what I learned about that is like if you love
- 39:17Speaker 7: the food, people gonna come back, and people out.
- 39:22Speaker 4: Of town they go straight there to eat.
- 39:25Speaker 7: So I got this opportunity with Reef and they were
- 39:29Speaker 7: explain the ghost Kitchen thing, and I was like, we
- 39:33Speaker 7: have one hundred fifty locations in five and all over
- 39:40Speaker 7: the world, from Dubai to London to Paris to Miami
- 39:43Speaker 7: to New York where I don't have to actually put
- 39:45Speaker 7: a whole building and all that, and given my vibe
- 39:50Speaker 7: of the type of wing I want and my energy
- 39:52Speaker 7: and name boom boom, And.
- 39:55Speaker 4: I was like, so, how's this going to work?
- 39:57Speaker 7: So like they can go to any you order Uber
- 40:00Speaker 7: Eatings or whatever, and you type in another wing and
- 40:02Speaker 7: you can get the food. But what I'm saying is,
- 40:05Speaker 7: as the entrepreneur, it's really incredible.
- 40:10Speaker 2: If.
- 40:11Speaker 4: But what it is is, so.
- 40:12Speaker 7: When you plan to do your ghost kitchen, the key
- 40:15Speaker 7: is obviously the food got to be incredible, but the
- 40:19Speaker 7: face got to be incredible too.
- 40:21Speaker 4: Who gonna push out and promote the food?
- 40:24Speaker 7: The blessing is that, thank god, I'm saying, I work
- 40:28Speaker 7: so hard my whole.
- 40:28Speaker 4: Life that people might know who I am. You know what
- 40:31Speaker 4: I'm saying.
- 40:31Speaker 7: So I'd be like another wing and they actually love
- 40:35Speaker 7: cal it and then they bite the wing like I
- 40:38Speaker 7: love this too, you know what I'm saying. So, but
- 40:44Speaker 7: on the business side, is y'all figure it out? One
- 40:48Speaker 7: hundred and fifty locations.
- 40:50Speaker 3: Everyone has an opinion when it comes to the foods
- 40:52Speaker 3: we eat. This food's good for you, this one's bad
- 40:55Speaker 3: for you, This diet works best.
- 40:57Speaker 2: But who actually has the right answer.
- 40:59Speaker 3: You don't need rules to lose weight, You just need
- 41:01Speaker 3: proper information to build smarter, more sustainable habits. NOOM is
- 41:04Speaker 3: here to change the way we view food by not
- 41:07Speaker 3: only looking at what we eat, but also how we eat.

- 41:13Speaker 3: keep going. Not everyone wants to be on a strict diet,

- 41:30Speaker 3: not only saved me money, it's also given me a
- 41:33Speaker 3: clearer understanding of the foods I'm consuming, which has made
- 41:35Speaker 3: me sharper.
- 41:36Speaker 2: And more energetic. You have to try it out.
- 41:38Speaker 3: Look, there are no food restrictions in the program, which
- 41:41Speaker 3: makes the process more flexible for your lifestyle. Everybody's journey

- 42:13Speaker 3: O O M dot com slash leisure. Don't wait, don't
- 42:17Speaker 3: hesitate over there now.
- 42:20Speaker 4: And everybody likes the wing. It's called through the math,
- 42:24Speaker 4: It's called you know what I'm saying.
- 42:25Speaker 7: So, but I want the entrepreneurs to know is it's
- 42:28Speaker 7: a great business. So you can have your hometown business
- 42:32Speaker 7: in Miami and you might not want to, you know,
- 42:36Speaker 7: be able to spend to open one out of town,
- 42:39Speaker 7: but people love your food. Open a ghost kitchen because
- 42:43Speaker 7: you know, let's keep it real. We probably order more
- 42:46Speaker 7: food then go out and eat. I mean, I know,
- 42:48Speaker 7: I do you know what I'm saying.
- 42:50Speaker 3: Yeah, so reef in another Wings is one of your
- 42:53Speaker 3: business endeavors, but.
- 42:55Speaker 2: I know you have a couple others.
- 42:56Speaker 3: So I want to know what the selection process is
- 42:57Speaker 3: like before you get involved with a company. I know,
- 43:00Speaker 3: Pandora is something that you're doing something with. You have
- 43:03Speaker 3: the doche I mean this was inspired by the dooche
- 43:05Speaker 3: from Jordan's to.
- 43:06Speaker 4: Them were getting no, We're gonna get there.
- 43:08Speaker 2: We're gonna kid there.
- 43:09Speaker 4: I have seen some movie.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Yeah, we're gonna get there.
- 43:12Speaker 3: So what's the process like before you involve yourself with
- 43:15Speaker 3: a brand?
- 43:16Speaker 7: I mean, I gotta love it because people they gonna
- 43:20Speaker 7: know if I don't love it. You know what I'm saying,
- 43:23Speaker 7: Like people know you gotta be authentic. Like if I'm
- 43:26Speaker 7: gonna promote like right now, I'm gonna be I'm gonna
- 43:29Speaker 7: be honest.
- 43:30Speaker 4: I love Jordan. I love Nike.
- 43:32Speaker 7: I've been wearing it since I was a kid. I
- 43:35Speaker 7: wear it now and thank God, I'm blessed and finally
- 43:38Speaker 7: to say I have a Jordan deal. I've been It's
- 43:42Speaker 7: been a dream of mine since a kid.
- 43:45Speaker 4: Have I been offered tons of money from other companies.
- 43:51Speaker 7: All the time, But I'd rather do this because this
- 43:55Speaker 7: is what I like and what I love. If tomorrow,
- 43:59Speaker 7: if I wear a different sneaker, you gonna say call it.
- 44:02Speaker 4: Don't wear those.
- 44:04Speaker 7: You know what I'm saying, Then it's not gonna It's
- 44:07Speaker 7: just not gonna connect and it's not gonna help the company.
- 44:11Speaker 7: It's not gonna help me. So I'm actually hurting myself.
- 44:14Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying.
- 44:15Speaker 7: You don't wanna what's that abusr your brand? Like you
- 44:21Speaker 7: know what I'm saying, water it down where it's just
- 44:23Speaker 7: like so I try my heartest well, I do only
- 44:26Speaker 7: do things that I love, you know what I'm saying. Now,
- 44:29Speaker 7: when it comes down to startup stuff.
- 44:31Speaker 4: I might not know.
- 44:34Speaker 7: About the business so much, but my brother right here
- 44:37Speaker 7: might have a great idea, and I believe in the
- 44:39Speaker 7: I bet on people. I don't I'm not into stocks,
- 44:42Speaker 7: but I bet on people. So like if my man
- 44:45Speaker 7: got some popping, I'm invest in it because I believe
- 44:50Speaker 7: in him, because he go hard. Like he I see
- 44:53Speaker 7: him working, I see and his product and he yeah,
- 44:56Speaker 7: it might not be here yet, but like but he
- 44:58Speaker 7: work hard.
- 44:59Speaker 4: I like that. I'm gonna invest in that.
- 45:01Speaker 7: And I don't even know nothing about the business, but
- 45:03Speaker 7: it might blow and I'm gonna get to learn the
- 45:05Speaker 7: business because I believe so a lot of times, you
- 45:08Speaker 7: gotta believe even when you don't make that dollar, you
- 45:11Speaker 7: know what I'm saying, And the later on it becomes
- 45:16Speaker 7: the biggest thing.
- 45:17Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying.
- 45:19Speaker 5: Fact, clap it up for that. That is a fact.
- 45:21Speaker 3: Here's a there's a new we the best on the
- 45:24Speaker 3: way By the way, what a new we the Best
- 45:26Speaker 3: on the way?
- 45:26Speaker 7: Oh yeah, yeah, twenty twenty two, I got my first
- 45:30Speaker 7: official Jordan We the Best DJ Calgary release coming next year.
- 45:35Speaker 4: It's excited. It's the old shoe. It's not like I
- 45:39Speaker 4: want to go.
- 45:39Speaker 7: Too d because but no, but yes, you're gonna go
- 45:42Speaker 7: to the store and buy it. The Sweet the Best
- 45:44Speaker 7: DJ Calgar Jordans. That's a big deal for me, you
- 45:48Speaker 7: know what I'm saying. So it's like a dream of mine.
- 45:51Speaker 7: I've been wanting shouting to Michael Jordan Reggie for for
- 45:54Speaker 7: believing in me.
- 45:55Speaker 2: You know what I mean, everything secret.
- 45:56Speaker 5: I want to take a break for business for just
- 45:58Speaker 5: one minute and talk about something that's very nar did
- 46:01Speaker 5: to my heart, to choice heart, to everybody's heart, The
- 46:03Speaker 5: late Great Nipsey Hustle. I believe the last video he
- 46:07Speaker 5: shot higher that was the day before he passed away.
- 46:10Speaker 4: Right, No, it wasn't a day before day.
- 46:12Speaker 7: I think it was like four or five days later,
- 46:14Speaker 7: like a week within Why bless his soul, Hustle the Great.
- 46:18Speaker 5: Can you talk about that experience because that was one
- 46:20Speaker 5: of the last things that he did as far as
- 46:22Speaker 5: to you know, on a large scale what was the experience?
- 46:25Speaker 4: It was incredible. Man. Nipsey is such a good person man.
- 46:28Speaker 7: His music is so incredible and his energy is so beautiful,
- 46:33Speaker 7: you know what I'm saying. And I got to know
- 46:35Speaker 7: Nipsey from back in the days I'm talking about. I
- 46:40Speaker 7: met him through Big U and Steve Lobell, like I'm
- 46:44Speaker 7: talking about a long time ago, and ever since then,
- 46:48Speaker 7: I've been a fan and I got to see his
- 46:50Speaker 7: grind and I was just blessed honor to be able
- 46:53Speaker 7: to work with him, what I'm saying, And he's incredible man,
- 46:56Speaker 7: And we want to grammy together on the ground of
- 46:59Speaker 7: John Legend.
- 47:00Speaker 4: We want to gram me together. Let's let's give it
- 47:02Speaker 4: up for nip She has.
- 47:03Speaker 5: So so as far as reinventing yourself, right, talk about
- 47:14Speaker 5: that because I feel like, like you said, you started as
- 47:16Speaker 5: a DJ or like turntable DJ. Then you turn into
- 47:20Speaker 5: like I like to call a musical maestro Quincy Jones
- 47:24Speaker 5: type vibe, then executive. Then I think where you're at now,
- 47:29Speaker 5: it's just like cultural icon status, like some people just
- 47:31Speaker 5: cultural can't really explain it. It's just like it's like
- 47:35Speaker 5: snoop though everybody knows you. So what is that can
- 47:39Speaker 5: you talk about because everybody here is an entrepreneur, inspiring
- 47:42Speaker 5: to be an entrepreneur, never settling, always pushing the envelope,
- 47:46Speaker 5: always looking to go to the next level.
- 47:49Speaker 7: The question is because you said you, I appreciate the love,
- 47:53Speaker 7: Like what's the question?
- 47:54Speaker 5: What's your thought process? And reinventing yourself and never settling?
- 47:57Speaker 7: Man, it's crazy. It's it's important to reinvent yourself. But
- 48:02Speaker 7: when you reinvent yourself, make sure it's yourself. You know,
- 48:06Speaker 7: sometimes people reinventure reinvent themselves and it's not even them.
- 48:11Speaker 4: So remember, you know, always be you. That's how you're
- 48:14Speaker 4: gonna win.
- 48:15Speaker 2: Be you.
- 48:16Speaker 4: Be you.
- 48:18Speaker 7: It's crazy because y'all might think it's funny, but like
- 48:22Speaker 7: you know, I guess they say, like every five years
- 48:24Speaker 7: you just try to use that word reinvented to do something.
- 48:28Speaker 7: As soon as I got this new teeth, I feel
- 48:32Speaker 7: like I feel like I feel I look at things different.
- 48:35Speaker 4: I'm like it's new.
- 48:37Speaker 7: I feel new, new opportunities, new blessings. I'm saying it's
- 48:42Speaker 7: new technology, it's a new world. So I'm like everything new.
- 48:45Speaker 7: Like I'm just being honest, like I've been trying. I
- 48:48Speaker 7: was I've been thinking about getting doing the teeth thing
- 48:50Speaker 7: for like years.
- 48:51Speaker 3: I was scared, but I'm like, this episode is brought
- 48:55Speaker 3: to you by Pepsi. I remember going to an HBCU
- 48:58Speaker 3: football game. It was one of the most memorable experiences
- 49:01Speaker 3: of my life. Watching an HBCU's team and band brings
- 49:05Speaker 3: so much excitement to the stadium completely packed with fans.
- 49:09Speaker 3: It's a once in a lifetime opportunity. The best part
- 49:12Speaker 3: about it is that Pepsi is a proud supporter of
- 49:15Speaker 3: HBCU students on and off the field.
- 49:18Speaker 2: PEPSI and HBCUs. That's what I like.
- 49:21Speaker 4: This is my reinvent whatever you were saying, like new t.
- 49:26Speaker 2: Wait, wait, you forgot what?
- 49:28Speaker 4: You forgot one?
- 49:29Speaker 2: It's called new Watch.
- 49:30Speaker 4: You know it's yeah, I like that watch too. You
- 49:32Speaker 4: got on that too?
- 49:32Speaker 2: Brother?
- 49:33Speaker 4: Your nice? You know I peeped down at the gate.
- 49:36Speaker 2: You know I'm saying. I mean, it's not an Arabic.
- 49:39Speaker 4: But podcast is doing great for you.
- 49:45Speaker 2: It's called Breaking News Alert. The podcast is booming.
- 49:48Speaker 3: I want I want to talk about the business side,
- 49:50Speaker 3: because not only from a music standpoint, have you become
- 49:53Speaker 3: a part of the cultural fixture, but some of your
- 49:56Speaker 3: phrases are part of our language, right, like congrats, you
- 50:00Speaker 3: play it yourself, right, secure the back alert right more
- 50:05Speaker 3: major key. So I'm like, damn, man, everybody's using this.
- 50:08Speaker 3: Are you trademarking these things?
- 50:10Speaker 2: Or no?
- 50:10Speaker 7: Yeah, I got a lot of a trademark, but some
- 50:12Speaker 7: of it you can't some of them, Like you know
- 50:15Speaker 7: what I'm saying. You know, I try, but yeah, I
- 50:17Speaker 7: definitely got I would say, majority of trademarks. And it
- 50:23Speaker 7: costs to do that, you know what I'm saying, Like
- 50:25Speaker 7: it's crazy. Every time I you know what I'm saying,
- 50:27Speaker 7: every time I've been blessed to level up, I feel like,
- 50:31Speaker 7: you know, when you level up, they be like they
- 50:34Speaker 7: come with this new stuff. You gotta trademark this, you
- 50:36Speaker 7: need this new insurance, you need this, that and that.
- 50:39Speaker 7: I'm like, damn, like ya, I just like y'all just
- 50:42Speaker 7: want to take it off.
- 50:42Speaker 4: But I get it.
- 50:43Speaker 7: It's like, so it only makes you, you know, protect
- 50:51Speaker 7: what you worked hard for, and you should do that
- 50:53Speaker 7: because God forbid you put everything into something and then boom,
- 50:59Speaker 7: you know, they say you can't use that no more
- 51:01Speaker 7: and everybody know it's you. So you don't never want
- 51:04Speaker 7: to do that to yourself. So so I gotta say,
- 51:08Speaker 7: don't cheat yourself.
- 51:08Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying, don't cheat yourself, reward yourself exactly.
- 51:14Speaker 2: I like it.
- 51:16Speaker 5: Cal let me ask you this some of the what
- 51:18Speaker 5: are some of the mistakes that you made as far
- 51:20Speaker 5: as in the music business financially, Like a lot of people,
- 51:24Speaker 5: you know, you learn on the fly. You said, like
- 51:26Speaker 5: even before snapchat, you know us in a tough space financially.
- 51:29Speaker 5: What is some of the stakes. What are some of
- 51:31Speaker 5: the learning lessons that you had to go through that
- 51:34Speaker 5: you you learned and you figured out.
- 51:39Speaker 4: Mistakes.
- 51:40Speaker 7: I look at it different, like I don't consider nothing
- 51:44Speaker 7: a loss or a mistake. I just feel like those
- 51:46Speaker 7: things that you're talking about is the stepping stone for
- 51:51Speaker 7: the bigger win you I'm saying, That's how I look
- 51:54Speaker 7: at it. So some don't go the way it's supposed
- 51:57Speaker 7: to go. Always put the energy to make it. As
- 52:00Speaker 7: long as we can keep going, I think that's the
- 52:03Speaker 7: whole thing. We just gotta keep going. So mistakes, I
- 52:09Speaker 7: wouldn't say it I made mistakes. I would say I
- 52:13Speaker 7: might have could have did some in a better way
- 52:17Speaker 7: or this way. But that's what made me figure it
- 52:21Speaker 7: out and to make it even better. And that's the thing,
- 52:24Speaker 7: you know that I want to let the young world know,
- 52:26Speaker 7: the new generation, It's okay to make a mistake. It's
- 52:30Speaker 7: okay to fall down, you know what I'm saying, because
- 52:33Speaker 7: you won't get right back up and you're gonna keep going.
- 52:36Speaker 7: Some people feel like when they make a mistake or
- 52:39Speaker 7: fall down, they feel like they're staying.
- 52:42Speaker 4: And that's the energy that it's gonna be.
- 52:44Speaker 2: Nae.
- 52:45Speaker 7: That's the motivation, you know what I'm saying, that's the
- 52:48Speaker 7: motivation to keep going, to take it to the next level.
- 52:52Speaker 7: So to answer your question, my mistakes was a stepping
- 52:55Speaker 7: stone for.
- 52:56Speaker 4: The bigger win.
- 52:58Speaker 2: Flap it up for that I got just just as
- 53:01Speaker 2: a thing. I got to ask you this.
- 53:02Speaker 3: Right, Like we watched Oprah and we saw people come
- 53:05Speaker 3: from that lineage of greatness. Right, she had doctor Phil,
- 53:09Speaker 3: she had Rachel Rick. Right, I'm seeing you and chef Forlissa,
- 53:16Speaker 3: So what is this something that's gonna come from that?
- 53:19Speaker 3: Because I'm looking at this fool like call. It just
- 53:20Speaker 3: can't be you know, this good floor. We gotta see
- 53:22Speaker 3: this with the greatness with the world.
- 53:24Speaker 4: So my chef, that's you know, she's family again. That's
- 53:28Speaker 4: just me being me, but me being me.
- 53:31Speaker 7: Yes, opportunities are coming in like crazy, Yo, Cal, you
- 53:34Speaker 7: want a cook.
- 53:35Speaker 4: And show, Yo, Cal, you want to do a menu book?
- 53:39Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying. You want to do a show?
- 53:41Speaker 7: Call West for dinner or you know what I'm saying,
- 53:43Speaker 7: Like and I'm like, they coming in, But that's just
- 53:47Speaker 7: me being at the house, you know, showing love to
- 53:51Speaker 7: my chef. You know what I'm saying, Like, you know,
- 53:53Speaker 7: I don't want to be one of them people that,
- 53:54Speaker 7: like I said, go back to like, Yo, you didn't
- 53:57Speaker 7: you didn't pass the word. That's why I ain't getting
- 53:59Speaker 7: bit or something. You know what I'm saying, Like like
- 54:02Speaker 7: I got a friend.
- 54:02Speaker 4: Named Chris Smoke.
- 54:03Speaker 7: She got a clothing company, right, he my guy, he.
- 54:08Speaker 4: Hasn't gave me a shirt yet. He gave everybody his
- 54:13Speaker 4: shirt and not me yet.
- 54:15Speaker 7: You know what I'm trying about Black he doing his
- 54:17Speaker 7: thing because I'm a three x four X I get it.
- 54:21Speaker 4: But what I'm saying is you know what I mean?
- 54:25Speaker 2: Yeah, you know Chris Pusa man let me. He pull
- 54:28Speaker 2: out his phone to recorder. He was like, he ain't
- 54:30Speaker 2: gonna say.
- 54:30Speaker 5: That shout out to my guys east side golf in
- 54:33Speaker 5: the building.
- 54:33Speaker 2: You have just seen him, just.
- 54:34Speaker 4: East side Golf. What's good. I heard you got some
- 54:36Speaker 4: shoes for me a lot.
- 54:38Speaker 2: I heard you got a gift.
- 54:40Speaker 4: It's good man, do let's go golfing.
- 54:46Speaker 5: You never know who's gonna be in the building. Call
- 54:49Speaker 5: it United Masters. This is something that you know a
- 54:52Speaker 5: lot of artists. I'm sure it's here. Shout out to
- 54:54Speaker 5: Steve Stout, Shout out to Benny Pue, Shout to all
- 54:57Speaker 5: the music executives in.
- 54:58Speaker 3: The Yeah, hey watch this, watch this White Planes own
- 55:02Speaker 3: Benny if you shout out the Greenberg.
- 55:04Speaker 4: Though, so.
- 55:06Speaker 5: United Masters. The whole thing their name is built on
- 55:10Speaker 5: owning your masters. Can you talk about the importance of
- 55:14Speaker 5: owning your masters for all of the artists and like why,
- 55:16Speaker 5: why is that a big deal?
- 55:18Speaker 7: I mean, it's very important owning your masters, not just
- 55:22Speaker 7: your masters, owning anything that you do and that you create,
- 55:27Speaker 7: you should always own it. But I also want you
- 55:31Speaker 7: to know this too, your masters, when you own them,
- 55:35Speaker 7: you got to make sure your masters is worth something
- 55:37Speaker 7: for yourself. And because you can't, you know a lot
- 55:41Speaker 7: of people get educated and executed, but don't lose the
- 55:46Speaker 7: grind of being great to make your master worth something.
- 55:52Speaker 7: You see what I'm saying, Like I wake up every
- 55:54Speaker 7: day and I say, because I got like I'm twelve
- 55:57Speaker 7: albums in and majority of those albums I own my
- 56:02Speaker 7: masters or own half the masters, and I have an
- 56:05Speaker 7: opportunity to buy my other half anytime I want.
- 56:08Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying, Make sure that.
- 56:10Speaker 7: But at the same time, is I wake up and
- 56:13Speaker 7: I look at my kids and my family, I say
- 56:15Speaker 7: to myself, if I ever want to sell my masters
- 56:19Speaker 7: the worst something, but you gotta make them worse something.
- 56:24Speaker 7: I don't want people to lose the grind or not
- 56:26Speaker 7: making it worse something.
- 56:28Speaker 4: But you have to own your masters.
- 56:30Speaker 7: And not everybody will agree with me, But it's okay
- 56:36Speaker 7: to have partners. It's okay to have a good partner.
- 56:42Speaker 7: And then also protect yourself where if you're giving your greatness,
- 56:47Speaker 7: make sure you be able to buy it back, but
- 56:50Speaker 7: the other half might help you become next level.
- 56:54Speaker 4: Then you buy it back, and then you.
- 56:56Speaker 7: Should say thank you what I'm saying, because right you
- 57:01Speaker 7: made money together, make money or all should buy your
- 57:03Speaker 7: own halfback, but you have to make sure you have
- 57:06Speaker 7: it in paperwork, so you can buy a back.
- 57:08Speaker 5: Yeah, that was what I'm saying.
- 57:10Speaker 7: But if you can own one hundred percent of your masters,
- 57:14Speaker 7: of course, But some people can own one hundred percent
- 57:17Speaker 7: of the masters and they don't do no work. Remember
- 57:22Speaker 7: it take teamwork to make a dream work. You know
- 57:27Speaker 7: what I'm saying. Like with me when I put out music, Yeah,
- 57:30Speaker 7: I'm gonna do my thing. Yeah yeah, but I need
- 57:32Speaker 7: my team around me to be doing they thing too,
- 57:35Speaker 7: you know what I'm saying. But yes, own your masters
- 57:41Speaker 7: and for some reason if you have to partner up
- 57:43Speaker 7: was to you know, with your masters, just make sure
- 57:46Speaker 7: you have that buy back opportunity.
- 57:48Speaker 5: What you're speaking about we introdew Jason Jeter, and he
- 57:52Speaker 5: was talking about Jason Jeeter is a TI's business partner
- 57:55Speaker 5: for Grand Hustle. Anybody doesn't know who is. So he
- 57:57Speaker 5: was saying, with tips early deals, they didn't own it masters,
- 58:00Speaker 5: but they had the option where it reverted back to
- 58:02Speaker 5: them after ten years. And he was saying that that
- 58:04Speaker 5: was extremely important because at that time they didn't have
- 58:07Speaker 5: the leverage to go into the label and demand their masters,
- 58:10Speaker 5: but they had the opportunity to not have their masters.
- 58:14Speaker 5: But it reverts back to them over the course of time,
- 58:17Speaker 5: and they knew that it's going to be something that's
- 58:18Speaker 5: going to be valuable for a long period of time.
- 58:21Speaker 5: So it's like residual income. So even if you don't
- 58:23Speaker 5: have your masters right away, like you said, you can
- 58:26Speaker 5: still actually structure it in a deal where it reverts
- 58:28Speaker 5: back to you. But it's important to put that in
- 58:30Speaker 5: your deal.
- 58:30Speaker 7: Yeah, you got to put that in your deal. And
- 58:32Speaker 7: then it's a new world. Goes back to this the
- 58:33Speaker 7: new world talk. It's a new world.
- 58:39Speaker 4: You can't walk in there like doing fifty year old business.
- 58:43Speaker 7: It's a new world. Do new business, new deal points,
- 58:47Speaker 7: do it your way. It's what you negotiate, and.
- 58:51Speaker 4: If they don't want to do it with you, then
- 58:53Speaker 4: you didn't find somebody else.
- 58:55Speaker 7: If they don't want to do what, you do it yourself.
- 58:57Speaker 7: That's the way I always did it, you know what
- 58:59Speaker 7: I'm saying. If I couldn't, they didn't see the vision
- 59:02Speaker 7: of the business cool, it might make my little my
- 59:06Speaker 7: job harder, but it got me where I'm at.
- 59:08Speaker 2: So I wanted this is again clap it up for that. Yeah.
- 59:13Speaker 3: So one of the things that and me and Shotty
- 59:15Speaker 3: had this talk all the time. We're like, Yo, Calla
- 59:17Speaker 3: is one of those guys. If he went on a
- 59:20Speaker 3: world tour, he can literally pick somebody from each city
- 59:22Speaker 3: because he's done as long, but probably everybody from every
- 59:25Speaker 3: major city. So is that something that we're looking forward
- 59:28Speaker 3: to in the future. We're going to see like a
- 59:29Speaker 3: DJ Calendar Friends tour. Is that what's happening?
- 59:33Speaker 7: We was planning to do that before the pandemic hit.
- 59:37Speaker 5: You know.
- 59:37Speaker 7: I was blessed to go on tour with Beyonce, and
- 59:39Speaker 7: then I went on tour again with Beyonce and Jay,
- 59:42Speaker 7: and then I did a tour with Demi Levado and
- 59:46Speaker 7: Klania and I did that like three years back to back.
- 59:50Speaker 4: Yeah, and then.
- 59:52Speaker 7: We was gonna put together a DJ Calner Friends tour.
- 59:55Speaker 7: I wanted to do like a ten city, just a
- 59:58Speaker 7: ten or even five, just certain cities, and we're gonna
- 1:00:03Speaker 7: do it.
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: We're gonna bentually do it. It's just the pandemic held
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: a lot of things up perfect.
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: I want to ask you this question. Shout out to
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: my brother Ross his album's coming out tonight, clapping up
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: for Roszay's Friend of Ours. So one thing you always
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: championed other people and Ross is a perfect example of
- 1:00:21Speaker 5: that because I remember, like at one point, every single
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: you put out have Rick Ross on it, like everyone
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: and talk about that as far as being a major
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: key of championing others, and it comes back to.
- 1:00:34Speaker 7: You, well, that's the Miami movement, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:00:36Speaker 7: We came up together. I was on the radio. Ross
- 1:00:41Speaker 7: was putting out records. I was blessed to break one
- 1:00:44Speaker 7: of his big records called Hustling, you know what I'm saying, And.
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: It was a blessing, and our.
- 1:00:50Speaker 7: Relationship just became real brothers and we love each other
- 1:00:55Speaker 7: and we kept hustling together and I ended up putting
- 1:00:57Speaker 7: my record out and had him on it, so he
- 1:01:00Speaker 7: blew up.
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: Then I started coming and.
- 1:01:04Speaker 7: We real brothers, so like that's like that's my man,
- 1:01:09Speaker 7: Like jump on this, jump on this jump. So I
- 1:01:11Speaker 7: had the blessing to be able to ask him to
- 1:01:13Speaker 7: jump on records. But at the same time, he the biggest,
- 1:01:16Speaker 7: so it was a blessing too. So I thank him
- 1:01:19Speaker 7: every day for that, for believing on me and getting
- 1:01:21Speaker 7: not just on one record, but get on any record
- 1:01:23Speaker 7: I ever asked him to get on. You know what
- 1:01:25Speaker 7: I'm saying, and it's just a blessing from coming from us,
- 1:01:28Speaker 7: coming from three oh five, you know what I mean.
- 1:01:31Speaker 7: It was like a special time and to this day
- 1:01:34Speaker 7: we brothers. And then later on, besides my music, I
- 1:01:37Speaker 7: ended up being working at Depth Jam, so I ended
- 1:01:40Speaker 7: up being his A and R for a lot of
- 1:01:44Speaker 7: his album So besides me putting out music, I also
- 1:01:47Speaker 7: was a blessed to be an A and R on
- 1:01:50Speaker 7: Rick Ross albums. So like, I'm so thankful for all
- 1:01:55Speaker 7: that experience from being an executive but also being an
- 1:01:59Speaker 7: executive for one of the biggest artists in the game, right,
- 1:02:04Speaker 7: So like you know what I'm saying, So just imagine
- 1:02:06Speaker 7: my inspiration and my knowledge was from behind the scenes
- 1:02:13Speaker 7: to in front of the scenes. I was just a
- 1:02:16Speaker 7: sponge taking it all in.
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm just one other person. Friend of the show,
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: friend of the show. Shout up, Maverick. Yeah, friend of
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: the show. Fat Joe eyl alumni. You guys have another
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: unique relationship. I remember when he was the guy he
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: was hot, and then he was always talking about Kali,
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: talking about Calendy. We saw you in all the videos
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: and then it was like, oh, this is Kaled talk
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: about your relationship, the history of that, and how what
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: loyalty means.
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: Well, Fat Joe, that's my brother.
- 1:02:48Speaker 7: I'm the godfather of his daughter, one of my best friends,
- 1:02:52Speaker 7: family for life. And also Joe was one of the
- 1:02:55Speaker 7: first people to believe in me and hug me and
- 1:02:59Speaker 7: put his hand around me and shout me out on
- 1:03:02Speaker 7: his records and let me produce songs on his album.
- 1:03:06Speaker 7: And I could be in Miami and he'd be in
- 1:03:09Speaker 7: New York and he'll be screaming, DJ Cavin, you know
- 1:03:12Speaker 7: what I'm saying. One of his biggest records and one
- 1:03:15Speaker 7: of the biggest records.
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: In hip hop.
- 1:03:17Speaker 7: He says on Lean Back, he goes, Cavin, I see you.
- 1:03:21Speaker 7: So we became brothers. I met Joe when he put
- 1:03:25Speaker 7: out Flow Joe, his very first album. Towards his second
- 1:03:31Speaker 7: album is when we got really close and we just
- 1:03:35Speaker 7: became best friends and then it became family. So you
- 1:03:40Speaker 7: usoul to let me DJ form, let me make beats
- 1:03:44Speaker 7: for him, and not even just that. He just always
- 1:03:47Speaker 7: wanted me to win the same way I want him
- 1:03:51Speaker 7: to win. And you know he gave me my first
- 1:03:55Speaker 7: He went to Cotch Records with me, and he convinced
- 1:03:58Speaker 7: Alan Grumblack and he gave me my first record deal.
- 1:04:02Speaker 7: You know what I'm saying. And look at me now,
- 1:04:05Speaker 7: you know what I'm saying, So I forever.
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: You also a ghost right a little bit, he said,
- 1:04:11Speaker 5: throw your rollies and in the sky, my guys, to
- 1:04:13Speaker 5: take those. That's your line.
- 1:04:15Speaker 7: I mean, I got a lot of lines out there,
- 1:04:17Speaker 7: y'all don't know. We don't want to go into that talking.
- 1:04:21Speaker 7: There's a lot of records out there, you know what
- 1:04:23Speaker 7: I'm saying. Like being a great producer, it's not just
- 1:04:25Speaker 7: making the beats, it's also producing the record from the
- 1:04:30Speaker 7: start to the finish and putting it out. When I'm
- 1:04:34Speaker 7: in the studio again, that just be me. So's if
- 1:04:37Speaker 7: it's words, if it's certain instruments, if it's certain sounds,
- 1:04:44Speaker 7: or just energy in that room. You know, I love
- 1:04:47Speaker 7: to collaborate, and collaborating is a big.
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: Key in music.
- 1:04:52Speaker 7: You go in the room, just turning the ac in
- 1:04:55Speaker 7: the right temperature is a big situation in the studio
- 1:05:00Speaker 7: because if it's wrong, we ain't gonna work.
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying. Just the energy, the lighting,
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: the sound, just the ideas.
- 1:05:09Speaker 7: When you have a relationship with an artist, you should
- 1:05:12Speaker 7: be able to be comfortable, to flow ideas and just
- 1:05:15Speaker 7: everybody feel good. You know, the cameras don't always got
- 1:05:18Speaker 7: to be on. We just vibing and and magic happens.
- 1:05:21Speaker 7: Never stop the magic, you know.
- 1:05:23Speaker 5: Let me let me ask you this before we rad
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: I wanted to ask one last question. Uh, Sean Carter,
- 1:05:29Speaker 5: you have a very good relationship with jay Z. What's
- 1:05:32Speaker 5: some lessons you learned from Jay? What's the what's the vibe?
- 1:05:34Speaker 5: Jay's a very reclusive person. A lot of people don't
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: get a chance to be around Jay. What's what's the
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: vibe with Jay?
- 1:05:39Speaker 7: Well, first of all, jay Z, he's my manager. I
- 1:05:42Speaker 7: consider him a partner and it's one of my for me,
- 1:05:47Speaker 7: he's like one of my best friends too, Like he's
- 1:05:50Speaker 7: my it's my friend, you know what I'm saying. I
- 1:05:54Speaker 7: look up to him. I've always been a fan, and
- 1:05:58Speaker 7: for me just to be able to be his friend,
- 1:06:01Speaker 7: I'm grateful. And I learned a lot from him. I
- 1:06:05Speaker 7: learned a lot, you know, before I had kids. I
- 1:06:07Speaker 7: watched how him and Beyonce with their kids and when
- 1:06:10Speaker 7: I was on tour, and I'm like, you know, they
- 1:06:12Speaker 7: work so hard and they still make family number one priority,
- 1:06:17Speaker 7: and I love that, you know what I'm saying. And
- 1:06:18Speaker 7: like you know, he always told me when I have
- 1:06:21Speaker 7: a kid. You know what I'm saying, if you think
- 1:06:23Speaker 7: you blessed now.
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: What you have that kid.
- 1:06:28Speaker 7: And then Asad came in my life, and you know
- 1:06:31Speaker 7: what I mean, Asad blessed me so much. You know,
- 1:06:33Speaker 7: God's blessings my queen and my son. And now I
- 1:06:37Speaker 7: got two boys, and you know, I would say fatherhood,
- 1:06:40Speaker 7: I learned a lot. I would also say, doing great
- 1:06:44Speaker 7: business and doing whatever you want to do. You know
- 1:06:51Speaker 7: what I love about jay Z is like tomorrow he'll
- 1:06:54Speaker 7: put out a movie.
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: You know, he'd be working on a movie. You don't
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: even know he'd do movies, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:07:00Speaker 7: Then he might be working on an album at the
- 1:07:03Speaker 7: same time he got talking about.
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: The new cover of The Ace of Spades, you know
- 1:07:08Speaker 4: what I'm saying.
- 1:07:09Speaker 7: And then at the same time, he got the biggest
- 1:07:12Speaker 7: management company.
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: And then at the.
- 1:07:14Speaker 7: Same time, you know, he got this and he's doing this,
- 1:07:19Speaker 7: and then now he runs this.
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: And what I love about that is why not do
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: everything you want to do?
- 1:07:27Speaker 7: And he's living proof of showing you you can do
- 1:07:30Speaker 7: it all. And he opened doors for a lot of
- 1:07:34Speaker 7: He opened doors for almost all of us in this
- 1:07:38Speaker 7: room when it comes down to our age group.
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying, He did a.
- 1:07:42Speaker 7: Lot, you know what I'm saying that, and you can
- 1:07:44Speaker 7: actually see it. You know, sometimes you hear about it,
- 1:07:48Speaker 7: but you see it. You know what I'm saying. Like,
- 1:07:51Speaker 7: and what I also learned about with Jay two is
- 1:07:55Speaker 7: talk all that shit into existence. You know what I'm saying,
- 1:07:59Speaker 7: all that lessons and wins to existence.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:08:05Speaker 7: Every day, I you know, back in the days, I
- 1:08:07Speaker 7: should write on refrigerator before these iPhones came out, and
- 1:08:10Speaker 7: I would write I want to.
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: Do this, this, this, this, this, this, this this.
- 1:08:15Speaker 5: And.
- 1:08:16Speaker 7: I started checking off all my all the things I
- 1:08:19Speaker 7: want to do, so I do that on my phone.
- 1:08:21Speaker 7: Now you got to have your own like mood board
- 1:08:25Speaker 7: and all the stuff that you want to do, and
- 1:08:28Speaker 7: don't stop till you check it all, because if you
- 1:08:30Speaker 7: don't talk it to existence and see it, you're not
- 1:08:33Speaker 7: gonna get to it. Every morning I wake up, I
- 1:08:36Speaker 7: look at the fridge and I ain't accomplished that yet.
- 1:08:39Speaker 7: I know, at least try to put some type of
- 1:08:41Speaker 7: energy in the day to try to accomplish that thing,
- 1:08:44Speaker 7: you know what.
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: I mean, Any last words, because right now it's somebody
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: that's sleeping on a pillow.
- 1:08:52Speaker 5: The pillow huggers, any any words of encouragement for the
- 1:08:57Speaker 5: pillow huggers out there.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:09:02Speaker 7: It's crazy because I used to have a friend and
- 1:09:05Speaker 7: he was hugging's pillow all day, slob coming on the pillow,
- 1:09:12Speaker 7: and I'd be like, yo, bro, you waking up at
- 1:09:16Speaker 7: three four o'clock in the afternoon. I'm his brother, So
- 1:09:21Speaker 7: I have a real combo with him, like, yo, you can't.
- 1:09:25Speaker 7: You you're missing out on everything, on all your blessings,
- 1:09:30Speaker 7: you know what I mean. And you know you got
- 1:09:33Speaker 7: to be able to tell somebody on your team if
- 1:09:35Speaker 7: you're working with them and they not motivating ambitious, to
- 1:09:39Speaker 7: go hard, not just for the team, but for yourself too,
- 1:09:43Speaker 7: you know what I'm saying. So it's like, you know,
- 1:09:47Speaker 7: I wake up in the morning, I enjoy seeing that sunlight,
- 1:09:51Speaker 7: and then when it's raining, I enjoy being the light
- 1:09:54Speaker 7: when it's raining, you know what I'm saying. So you
- 1:09:57Speaker 7: can't do all that, all this great stuf that we
- 1:10:00Speaker 7: talked about for an hour. If you hugging your pillow,
- 1:10:03Speaker 7: putting slob all over it. You just can't do it,
- 1:10:06Speaker 7: you know what I'm saying, So you know what I mean.
- 1:10:08Speaker 7: Stay motivated, stay inspired. And if you got your team
- 1:10:13Speaker 7: and somebody hugging that pillow, give him that talk so
- 1:10:15Speaker 7: you can help that person out and make them see
- 1:10:19Speaker 7: something for them to be inspired to.
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: Get up early.
- 1:10:23Speaker 7: You know, we all gotta hug the pillow once in
- 1:10:25Speaker 7: a while, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: But you know what I.
- 1:10:27Speaker 5: Mean, Charlie, I appreciate you, my brother giving a round
- 1:10:30Speaker 5: applause for DJ Caley. Thank you so much, brother.
- 1:10:37Speaker 6: My graduates from my school being forced back drop bag drop, Mike,
- 1:10:43Speaker 6: drop backdrop.
