- 0:07The New York Yankees faced the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park for Game 1 of the 1962 World Series on Thursday, October 4th.
- 0:15The Yankees were managed by Ralph Hauke and were the defending world champs appearing in their 13th World Series in the past 16 years.
- 0:22The Giants were managed by Elvin Dark and were appearing in their first World Series since 1954.
- 0:28This audio recording is from the NBC Radio broadcast featuring announcers George Kell and Joe Gargiola.
- 0:34Thanks Joe, we're ready to go here at Candlestick Park in San Francisco on a beautiful baseball afternoon as Joe told you.
- 0:42The temperature is 63 degrees at 11 o'clock this morning. There's practically no wind at all right now, but the wind does come up here later in the afternoon.
- 0:51That's one of the reasons for the 12 o'clock starting time here in San Francisco.
- 0:56Here's all the Giants on the field and you'll hear a tremendous roar from the crowd.
- 1:06The National League champion San Francisco Giants are taking the field and arousing ovation from a capacity crowd here in Candlestick Park.
- 1:15Approximately 50,000 people greeted the Giants last night as they flew back from Los Angeles after winning the third game of the playoff against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 1:25As Joe told you, the pitchers today will be two left-hander Billy O'Dell pitching for the Giants. Billy has won 19 and lost 14 this year.
- 1:33And for the Yankees it'll be Whitey Ford, their brilliant left-hander with a record of 17 wins and 8 defeats.
- 1:40The umpires today Al Barlich of the National League will be behind the plate.
- 1:45Charlie Berry of the American League will be at first base. Stan Landis of the National League will be down at second base. Jim Honichick of the American League at third base.
- 1:57Ken Burkhart of the National League will be down the left field line. And Hank Soar of the American League will be down the right field line.
- 2:07The Yankee bullpen is located down the right field line and the Giants bullpen down the left field line. And this is a little bit strange, Joe, because the dugouts are just the opposite.
- 2:19The reason for that, George, is that the manager would like to look at his bullpen and if they were the other way around, from the Giants dugout you cannot see the right field line.
- 2:28Therefore, to take a good look at his bullpen he puts a right and direct view which would be in the opposite direction down the left field line.
- 2:35It's a crisscross thing. It's not good for the ball players because the ball players like to be in seclusion.
- 2:40I was wondering, but I can see now that would be the reason. Here's the first pitch of the ball game to Tony Cubak. He fouls it back.
- 2:48One strike to the leadoff, man. Cubak to left-handed batter. He has a 3-14 batting average. Four home runs and 17 runs batted in.
- 2:58Billy O'Dell getting ready. Here's the one strike pitch. High and inside and Cubak has to go down to get out of the way of this one.
- 3:05One ball, one strike. The Giants play Tony a little bit to left field. Willie May straight away in center, but Harvey Keane has moved over toward the left field foul line.
- 3:15Jim Davenport, the third baseman, is in on the edge of the infield grass. In fact, all of the Giants infielders in a step or so.
- 3:23Tony slapped a lot of balls into left and left center. One ball, one strike. Here's the pitch. Foul ball.
- 3:33This one's coming right back into the press box. One ball, two strikes. O'Dell coming in with a fast ball around the letters.
- 3:41O'Dell doesn't necessarily have to pitch down, which is a surprising thing. The effective way, of course, is to keep the ball down, but he is sneaky enough.
- 3:49He has been this year to get that ball by you when it's up. He seems to be trying to keep the ball inside to Cubak. They're going to try to make him fool the ball.
- 3:58Billy gets ready. The one, two pitch. Another foul ball. Try to get the fast ball by him on the outside corner and Cubak fouls it back.
- 4:08Cubak, Richardson and Trice will be the Yankee batters here on the top of the first inning. The 1962 World Series is underway from Candlestick Park.
- 4:19Billy O'Dell against Whitey Ford here in the first game. Here's the pitch to Tony. A line drive that's fouled on the first baseline.
- 4:27That's one bounding into the bullpen.
- 4:29He broke his bat on that one, George, and that's a pretty good indication of the kind of stuff that O'Dell has, because that's one yardstick that you use on an O'Dell, and I would imagine a Whitey Ford too, because the fast ball from O'Dell to a left-hand hitter will break back and break in.
- 4:44And he's been staying inside using the belt buckle for the target, and he just gave Cubak an instant toothpick, actually.
- 4:51He just wasted one of his good bats, and he had to go back to the dugout to get another one.
- 4:55Still a ball and two strikes. Here's the pitch. A ground ball that's fouled on the third baseline. Frankie Crossetti, the Yankee coach at third base, picks it up.
- 5:05Crossetti coaching at third base, and Wally Mosey is the coach at first base for the Yankees.
- 5:10I was talking to O'Dell before the ball game. He says, I hope the Yankees are looking for fast balls, because he said, I lost that about two weeks ago. I'm arm-wearing. It's going to be a lot of slow stuff.
- 5:19Here's the pitch. A tail hitter. Tony Cubak strikes out on a slow curve, Joe.
- 5:30Jerry doesn't ever remind me that conversation, no, when they say, I don't have my fast ball like one pitcher to tell another pitcher, you don't throw me any curve balls.
- 5:38I won't throw you any, and the first time up, they'll snap off that beauty.
- 5:41Don't believe it.
- 5:42Don't believe it.
- 5:43There's Bobby Richardson, a little right-handed batter with a 3-0-2 batting average.
- 5:48O'Dell delivers. Strike, he got the fast ball over. One strike to Bobby. He has eight home runs and 58 runs batted in.
- 5:58Richardson has had a tremendous season for the Yankees, and has always a great World Series performer.
- 6:04A little clutch ball player. Here's the one strike, bitch. Curved down low. This one in the dirt, scooped up by Ed Bailey.
- 6:12A ball and a strike to Bobby. 209 base hits during the regular season for Bobby Richardson.
- 6:23O'Dell into the wind-up. The one-one pitch. Down low. This one gets away from the catcher, rolls back.
- 6:30Tom Heller, the catcher for this ball club that was spiked in the playoffs, reported the ballpark, says he's ready to play anytime manager Al Dark needs him.
- 6:40Boy, you just don't hurt in the World Series. That's sort of back in nagging muscles.
- 6:45That's going to leave you when you've got a chance to play in the World Series.
- 6:48You're certainly not tired, are you, Joe?
- 6:50No, sir. Nothing like...
- 6:51No, what are the rest?
- 6:52Ain't that the truth?
- 6:53Here's the pitch.
- 6:54Line drive. This one is in there, just out of the reach of Chuck Heller.
- 6:58A soft liner over the head of the second baseman in the shallow right field.
- 7:02And Bobby Richardson picks up where he left off in the 1961 World Series.
- 7:08The first hit of the ball game puts a runner in first place, one out, and the batter will be Tom Tresch, the left fielder.
- 7:16Tommy's a switch batter. He'll be batting right-handed against the left-hander, O'Dell.
- 7:21286 batting average for Tresch. 20 home runs this year, 93 runs batted in.
- 7:28Here's the pitch. A foul ball. This one hit him on the foot, rolls off to the right.
- 7:33George, I think the surprising thing about a young Tresch this year has been his power.
- 7:38I know Ralph Hough, the manager of the Yankees, talking about it, says that the Cubek going into the Army was really a blessing,
- 7:43because it gave him an opportunity to find out about Tresch.
- 7:46He said, I thought he was a pretty good hitter, but I didn't think he had the power that he showed.
- 7:50And with the 20 home runs, that's a lot of power.
- 7:53Joe, when you find a power hitter that can hit from either side, you've got a real gem.
- 7:58That's a good ball player.
- 8:00O'Dell checks his runner. The one strike pitch.
- 8:04Here's a ladder to center field. This one's in there.
- 8:07A solid base hit. Richardson's got to hold on to second base.
- 8:10Willie Mays up for the ball on the second hop. Fires it into, but gone the shortstop.
- 8:15So the Yankees have back-to-back singles. Runners at first and second.
- 8:19One out and here's Mickey Mantle.
- 8:21The Yankee attack, George. The nips and nips get on and the lines and tigers come out of the cage.
- 8:25Here it is. The two soft line drives and now it's Mammal Marison Howard. You're looking at some pretty good cannons.
- 8:31Looks a little familiar, doesn't it? The pattern.
- 8:35Mickey Mantle a switch batter. He'll be batting right-handed against O'Dell.
- 8:40Mickey with a 321 batting average this year. Had 30 home runs and 89 runs batted in.
- 8:46Mickey without a large part of the season, but he still had a tremendous year for the Yankees.
- 8:51Mickey right down on the end of the bat, waiting on Billy O'Dell.
- 8:56The runners lead off. The first pitch. He swings and misses.
- 9:01Fastball up around the letters. I like these guys that get down the end of the bat.
- 9:05You figure if they just moved down another quarter of an inch, they'd have a handful of knuckles.
- 9:09Right down on the end.
- 9:13The Giants deep and around to the left field for Mammal.
- 9:17In field back. Here's a pitch. A ground ball at foul just outside the bag at third.
- 9:24That one was headed into the left field corner for extra bases, but about a foot outside the line.
- 9:29A two strike count to Mammal. Here at Candlestick, you'll see the giant outfielders especially constantly looking at the flag.
- 9:36The way it's going right now, it's going a little bit towards the right field corner and it'll slice towards right center coming off the bat of the right hand hitter.
- 9:44They'll have to protect the right center field gap. Here's a pitch to Mickey.
- 9:48Inside the fastball that pushed him back from the plate. One ball, two strikes.
- 9:53The wind has picked up since the start of this ball game. We're just barely moving the flag about 30 minutes ago, but right now flags are moving pretty good.
- 10:03Glowing from left field into right field. The pitch to Mickey. Down low, he checked his swing in time.
- 10:10I believe in the count of two and two. And barely trying to kind of steal a strike.
- 10:16Bailey has a reputation among the ball players as being an unofficial umpire.
- 10:20He's the last of the playing umpires in fact, Dusty Boggess, whenever he sees Bailey catching, he always says,
- 10:25well, I see we got the extra umpire working today. Just merely offering constructive criticism as most catchers will do.
- 10:31Yogi's still helping out now and then. I think most catchers will do.
- 10:35A two to count to Mickey. Here's a pitch. Inside fastball, low and in. Three and two to Mantle.
- 10:43Odell knows pretty much how he wants to pitch to Yankees as he pitched in the American League for many years with the Baltimore Orioles.
- 10:50So they're no strangers to him.
- 10:52Here comes a key situation already in the ball game. Richardson taking a look at Crossetti as to whether he should hold or come on down.
- 10:58Of course, what Mantle, as far as strikeouts is concerned, that's what dictates the move. You'd have to look for Richardson to break.
- 11:04Odell gets set. Here's a three to pitch.
- 11:08A swing out there.
- 11:14It's a good thing they were all in it, but now they're setting.
- 11:20Billy Odell came in with a fastball around the knees on the inside part of the plate and Mickey Mantle goes down swinging.
- 11:27That's two outs. And the batter will be Roger Maras.
- 11:31Roger's a left handed batter. He has a 256 batting average.
- 11:3633 home runs this year. 100 runs batted in.
- 11:43Two on, two outs. We're in the first inning. There's no score in the ball game.
- 11:49Odell steps off, bluffing Richardson back to second base.
- 11:53Maras out of the box for just a moment, getting back in.
- 12:01Two strikeouts and two singles in the inning. So Yankees are threatening.
- 12:06The pitch to Roger.
- 12:13Odell is throwing hard, regardless of what he said before the ball game. He is throwing hard today.
- 12:18Billy's a great competitor.
- 12:21Boog headlines in the morning paper, so this is the chance he's been looking for for a long time.
- 12:26A World Series start. There's a foul ball coming back into the crowd.
- 12:30Odell coming in with a fastball again. Maras fouled it back.
- 12:34Georgia is surprised to see the story by Willie. Willie says we're going to win this thing and win it easy.
- 12:39Well, I think that might be a natural reaction, Joe.
- 12:43Although I doubt any world series is easy.
- 12:48Even those that are one and four straight, they're tough.
- 12:51There's a pitch to Maras. Down low, he got the fastball over, but too low.
- 12:56One ball and two strikes.
- 12:59Top of the first inning. Two on, two outs. No score in the ball game.
- 13:03Billy Odell pitching to Roger Maras. One ball, two strikes.
- 13:07Richard's in his second base. Tom Trash at first.
- 13:11Billy gets that. Here's the pitch.
- 13:14Inside. Fastball a little close.
- 13:17The defense has really dropped back on the right side.
- 13:20Hiller at second base is on the edge of the grass, hoping that he can at least knock the ball down and save that run.
- 13:25The fader guards that line.
- 13:28Giants are playing Maras a little bit more to left field than most ball clubs in the American League.
- 13:33He's pretty much straight away on left field.
- 13:37Here's the two, two pitch. Bow ball. That's one bouncing back to the stand.
- 13:42Two and two to Maras.
- 13:44If you look at the overall picture, George, it looks like the infield really plays in the pool,
- 13:49whereas Keene, as you mentioned, is straight away.
- 13:52Willie's over in right center. He's got about an acre and a half in left center field if he should have hit one out that way.
- 13:57Rodge will pull nearly everything against right-handed pitching.
- 14:03He'll hit more to left field against left-handers.
- 14:07A ball, two and a strike, two counts.
- 14:10Here's the pitch. Here's a fly ball.
- 14:12Hit deep in the right field.
- 14:14Way back at the fence. A loo. He leaps it is.
- 14:18Gone. It's up against the fence. Here's one run in. Two runs in.
- 14:22Maras at second base. We're waiting for the call.
- 14:25That's the weather. It was a home run or a double.
- 14:28I believe it's going to be a two-base hit.
- 14:31A ball hit the top of the fence and bounded back.
- 14:34A two-base hit for Roger Maras. Two runs coming in.
- 14:40A loo crashed into the fence. He's limping, but he says he's going to be all right.
- 14:44You can get higher than the fence here at Candlestick.
- 14:48And a loo played that ball perfectly. He got way up there.
- 14:51A lot of the youngsters, all equipped with gloves, will battle for that ball.
- 14:55It looks like it's going to go over the fence.
- 14:57A loo got to the fence, leaps up and just didn't get a glove on.
- 15:01It looks like it was George Loos George as he came down. His elbow is hitting the fence.
- 15:06Elston Howard Devatter with a runner at second base and two outs.
- 15:09Two runs in. Here's a swing and a miss on a fastball. One strike.
- 15:13As you said, I believe a loo got up above the fence and got it in his glove,
- 15:17but a lot of people behind the fence battling for the ball and he batted it back into the playing field.
- 15:24So the Yankees out in front, two to nothing. The pitch to Howard.
- 15:29A ground foul right at the plate. Strike two.
- 15:32Hell, he's a right-handed batter. He has a two-seven-and-nine batting average.
- 15:36Twenty-one home runs, ninety-one runs batted in.
- 15:42The way on might have been helping that ball is it's blowing from the left field corner for the right field corner.
- 15:47Rod's got it up in the air.
- 15:49A loo kept drifting back as if he might be going to make the catch at any time.
- 15:55O'Dell gets that. Here's the pitch.
- 15:58Foul ball. Look out right into the giant dugout.
- 16:01Ellie, check this swing. The ball hit his bat and slailed off on a line into the giant dugout.
- 16:07Still strike two.
- 16:10Two singles and a double here in the first inning and the Yankees have taken a two-to-nothing lead.
- 16:17Here's the pitch. Foul ball. That's one back in the crowd. Right behind the plate.
- 16:23See, Yankees, we're talking about that they know a little bit about O'Dell, about a Billy Pierce,
- 16:28but they'll always add that one sentence that, well, he might have changed since we last saw him.
- 16:33They were looking for a lot of breaking stuff off O'Dell. O'Dell was kind of setting him up by saying his arm is weary,
- 16:38but he's just been rearing back and firing. He's been throwing hard.
- 16:41Here's the two-strike pitch. Curve ball. He pops it up.
- 16:44The second baseman, Chuck Hiller, drifting back on the grass, makes the catch and the sides retired.
- 16:50The Yankees pick up two runs on three hits. One man left and the score's the end of the first tie at the first inning.
- 16:56New York two with the giants coming to bat.
- 17:00Hey, Joe.
- 17:02What?
- 17:03Take a look at that new 63 dodge.
- 17:06Would I like to own that?
- 17:09It's the new 1963 dodge. It's a beautiful new way to go in the low-price field.
- 17:15This sleek and eager automobile is a bigger dodge, a richer dodge, but it's priced right down in the low-price field.
- 17:22Exciting to drive and built to stay that way.
- 17:26Chrysler engineered and dodge built to be as rattle-free and rust-resistant as a car can be.
- 17:32The 63 dependables from Dodge, the best-built cars in all dodge history,
- 17:38and you don't have to come out of the low-price field to come up to dodge.
- 17:41Let your dealer show you how in Dodge for 1963, a product of Chrysler Corporation.
- 17:49We're quality-impending into every car.
- 17:56Well, we move along into the bottom of the first inning.
- 18:01The Yankees out in front by score of two to nothing.
- 18:04For the giants, it'll be Harvey Keen to lead off.
- 18:07It'll be followed by Chuck Hiller and then Philippe Ballou.
- 18:12Roger Merrith coming through with a double with two runners on and two outs to drive in the two runs.
- 18:18You know, a lot of people saying that Merrith had an offseason this year,
- 18:21but Joe, he had 33 home runs and 100 runs batted in, and that might be an offseason after 61 home runs, but pretty good.
- 18:29That's the tough part about hitting 61 home runs, Joe.
- 18:32That's why I'd like to hit 61. You know, what could you do for an encore?
- 18:36Probably the way Merrith feels today. What can you do?
- 18:39Anything less than 61 is a bad year.
- 18:42Mugiel has gone through that all his career. Mugiel hit 315 and have to apologize.
- 18:47Here's Harvey Keen, a right-ended batter. Harvey with a 304 batting average.
- 18:53Whitey Ford delivers, in tight with a fastball, one ball, no strike.
- 18:58Harvey has 10 home runs, 68 runs batted in.
- 19:03Giants play him pretty much straight away.
- 19:07Here's the pitch.
- 19:09Strike, he got the fastball over, one-and-one to Keen.
- 19:18Whitey Ford, the Yankee pitcher, he won 17 and lost 8 this year.
- 19:25Check's the sign. Here's the one-one pitch.
- 19:27Curve ball, he swings and misses. One ball, two strikes.
- 19:32It's a great thing when you can go out to the catch-up ball game and know that your pitcher is going to give you more than one pitch to work with.
- 19:38And before the game, talking to Howard, he said he usually gets at least three.
- 19:44That's real luxury.
- 19:48Whitey gets ready. Here's the one-two pitch.
- 19:51Ground ball at his foul down the third baseline.
- 19:54This one going into the bullpen in left field.
- 19:57Still a ball and two strikes.
- 19:59It'll be Keen, Shock Hiller and Philippe Lou, the first three batters for the Giants in the first inning.
- 20:04The Yankees in front, two to nothing.
- 20:08Two runs on three hits in the top of the inning.
- 20:14Keen right down on the end of the bat, waiting. Here's the one-two pitch.
- 20:18In the tight, the fastball in around the knee, pushed him back.
- 20:23See the Yankee defense is trying to jam Keen yet they're playing him towards right center field.
- 20:28They don't expect him to be able to pull that ball.
- 20:30Hire hits a lot of balls into right and right center.
- 20:34Here's the two-two pitch. He swings and misses.
- 20:36Hire v. Keen strikes out.
- 20:39The curve ball by him around the knees.
- 20:42You think it's just another game? Three-two curve ball?
- 20:45Lead off, man. They weren't about to let him hit that fastball.
- 20:48Ford snapped off a curve ball. Now, Austin Howard goes out to talk to him.
- 20:52And more than lacking a spot like this, just tell him what a great curve ball it was.
- 20:57Not just another ball game, as we said, Joe, but if it could be to anybody,
- 21:02it would be to Whitey Ford. This fella has been like ice water in World Series competition.
- 21:07Chuck Heller, a left-handed batter stepping in.
- 21:10Little second baseman has a two-seventy-six batting average.
- 21:14Here's the pitch. He swings and misses. Fastball around the letters.
- 21:18Whitey really let Kubek have a little jab of his workouts.
- 21:21The ball took a bad hop, hit Kubek in the Adam's apple.
- 21:23He sits down at Kubek every October. He's got to get hit in the Adam's apple.
- 21:27Ford ready. Here's the one-strike pitch.
- 21:31Curve ball. He checked his swing, but he got the call strike.
- 21:34Now, Barlich of the National League going up with the right hand.
- 21:38So Ford is out in front of Heller with a strike two-count.
- 21:42Chuck has three home runs this season. 49 runs batted in.
- 21:47Whitey gets ready. Here's the two-strike pitch.
- 21:50He checked it again. This one low and away. One ball, he strikes.
- 21:55To mention of Barlich, there's no doubt about what he's going to call him.
- 21:59When he calls it a strike, boy, he'll blow your eyeballs out.
- 22:02He really booms it out. One of the real guys that calls it right now.
- 22:07Here's the one-two pitch. Curve down low.
- 22:10Scooped out of the dirt by Elston Howard. The counters even at two and two to Heller.
- 22:16Chuck was spiked on a play yesterday at Chavez-Rivine in Los Angeles,
- 22:21but after a little first aid, he's ready to go.
- 22:23Chokes the bat, waiting on Whitey Ford. Here's the two-two pitch.
- 22:27Fly ball popped up behind Shortstop. Cubak drifting over, makes the catch, and there's two outs.
- 22:33Chuck Heller goes out on a pop-up for the Shortstop.
- 22:37Coming up the right fielder, Phillip Alou.
- 22:40Big round of applause for Alou as he comes on.
- 22:47This color's had a tremendous season for the Giants.
- 22:503-16 batting average, 25 home runs, 98 runs batted in.
- 22:56Alou a right-handed batter. Here's Ford's first pitch.
- 23:00Strike. He blazed the fastball over the inside corner.
- 23:11A one-strike pitch. Curve ball. He bounces it down the first baseline.
- 23:15Ford's gonna have to hurry. He picks it up, slips the scourer in time to get his man.
- 23:20Alou hit one on the end of the bat down the first baseline. Ford flips over to Howard.
- 23:25No runs, no hits, no runs, no ones left.
- 23:28The majority in the one-footletting of play, the Yankees two and the Giants nothing.
- 23:33When you look at that one, what kind is it? That, my friend, is a 63 Dodge. I'll take it.
- 23:41The defendable 1963 Dodge. The beautiful way to go in the low-priced field.
- 23:47Dodge is a full six inches longer than last year, with a broader lower hood.
- 23:52A great roof that extends over the rear window to protect you from the rays of the sun. A longer, deeper trunk.
- 23:58And the 63 Dodge is richly tailored inside.
- 24:02Interior cloth fabrics are made of 100% nylon warp.

- 24:30Well, Karen, to lead off for the Yankees in the second inning, a two-to-nothing ballgame New York got in front.
- 24:39We all a right-handed batter with a 270 batting average.
- 24:42Here's O'Dell's first pitch. Ball, it's a pass. One ball, no strike.
- 24:48George DeMuste is really taped up in the clubhouse. It looked like he was going to do a mummy act.
- 24:52His back has really been bothering him, and he had a little bit of a problem working out.
- 24:56The one and no pitch. That's the one inside. Ball two, and no strike.
- 25:01Karen with 23 home runs and 80 runs batted in. Big, strong, right-handed batter.
- 25:11Billy O'Dell gets ready. Here's the two and no pitch.
- 25:15Ball, it's outside, way outside with the fastball. Three and no.
- 25:21It'll be Scowren, Boyer, and Whitey Ford for the Yankees here in the second inning.
- 25:27The Yankees in front, two-to-nothing. The three and no pitch. This one up high, he walked in.
- 25:32Scowren walks on four straight pitches.
- 25:36He'll put a runner at first base with no one out, and the batter will be Cleat Boyer.
- 25:42Boyer was hit yesterday by a pop fly on his middle finger of his left hand, and it's quite swollen.
- 25:49I was talking to him before the ball game, so it bothers him when he tries to grip the bat.
- 25:54He's in there and ready to go, and as Joe told you, you just don't get hurt at World Series time.
- 25:59Everybody wants to play.
- 26:02The pitch to Boyer. He swings and bounces a foul off to the left.
- 26:06George, I think if you wake up in the morning and you're warm, you're ready to play in the World Series.
- 26:11You wait too long. There are so many great ball players who have never had the opportunity to play in the World Series.
- 26:17I'll tell you, when you get a chance, you better make the best of it.
- 26:22Boyer has a 272 batting average. 18 home runs, 69 runs batted in.
- 26:34O'Dell taking a little time. He switched baseballs with Ed Bailey. That's one to his liking.
- 26:40Here's the pitch. Outside. A spall just off the corner. One-in-one.
- 26:46Sopada holding against the runner at first base. Rest of the infield back.
- 26:55Billy checks his runner. Here's the one-one pitch. Outside. Please check this swing and down.
- 27:01Ball two and strike one. Two runs on three hits for the Yankees in this ball game.
- 27:07The Giants have no runs on no hits.
- 27:12Bailey taking a little time. Walks out in front of the plate. Says something to O'Dell before he tosses the ball back.
- 27:19Billy has been a little while here in the second inning.
- 27:24Here's the two-one pitch. He swings and lines it down the left field line. It is curving. It is foul.
- 27:31That's one well into the crowd, but foul by some 40 or 50 feet.
- 27:36So the count is even to Boyer at two and two.
- 27:43It's not a big fellow, but he has good power.
- 27:48That's evidence by his 18-ohm runs this year. The pitch he swings and leaves. That's the fast ball by him.
- 27:55Quiddus Boyer strikes out. He strikes out number three for O'Dell. One away and the batter will be Whitey Ford.
- 28:05While Ford is coming up just to mention here that this is a good ballpark to hit in the backdrop,
- 28:10so that's been put up here. It's a big green one and it goes high enough to where it protects you against a hill in the houses beyond the candlestick park here.
- 28:19And ball players say that it's a real good background.
- 28:23Here's Whitey Ford, a left-handed batter. The Giants are looking for the bun. O'Dell delivers. He tries to body miss the ball.
- 28:32Whitey was going to drop it along the third baseline, but Billy got the fast ball by him. A one strike count.
- 28:39That damn Ford can make it tough on you as he comes charging in. The pay is just a little bit late coming in.
- 28:46Davenport's a real good third baseman. We'll see some great third base play in this series.
- 28:51There's one strike. He tried to run at it, but missed the ball.
- 28:57Billy Whitey was trying to get the bat out of the way, but Al Barlich said he'd gone through with it.
- 29:02A strike two count.
- 29:06Bill Scower in at first place with one out here in the second inning. O'Dell delivers outside.
- 29:12This is one off the corner. One ball, two strikes. Ford gave no indication. He was going to bun with two strikes on him.
- 29:21Davenport still playing in close at third base. I'm going to be ready.
- 29:28One ball, two strikes.
- 29:32Here's the pitch. A swing and a miss. He's stuck him out. Whitey Ford goes down swinging.
- 29:39Strike out number four for Billy O'Dell.
- 29:43Two down, and the batter will be Q-back.
- 29:48Tony's struck out his first time at bat.
- 29:53O'Dell after walking the first batter here in the second, is struck out the next two.
- 30:00Billy gets that. The pitch to Q-back is in there. Fats ball around the belt. A one strike count.
- 30:11The pitchers tomorrow here at Candlestick Park more than likely will be Jack Sanford for the Giants and Ralph Terry for the Yankees.
- 30:18Here's a foul ball coming back into the crowd. A strike two count to Q-back.
- 30:28Billy Pierce, a left hander will open for the Giants in Yankee Stadium on Sunday.
- 30:34Ralph Howe, undecided but more than likely Bill Stafford.
- 30:39A pitch to Q-back. Ground ball up the middle in the center field.
- 30:43Cowan's going to hold on in second base.
- 30:46As Joe told you, it was very evident he's being bothered with a bad back. Joe, he just trotted in the second base.
- 30:52He's all taped up and he just can't really maneuver. He was in real pain as he worked out.
- 30:58He was taking batting practice and you know, ball players like to hit, even short change himself in that batting cage.
- 31:06A single by Q-back puts runners at first and suck them with two outs and the batter will be Bobby Richardson.
- 31:12Bobby had a single to right field back in the first inning.
- 31:16O'Dell delivers. Here's a foul ball. This could be out of play coming back into the seat.
- 31:22One strike to Richardson. Bobby a little right handed batter.
- 31:29A two to nothing ball game. The Yankees in front. We're in the top of the second inning.
- 31:37O'Dell gets that. Here's the pitch. Ground ball hit to the shortstop.
- 31:41Began has it flipped over to second and plenty of time for the out on Q-back.
- 31:46No runs on one hit. No air. Two men left and the score at the end of the first half of the second inning.
- 31:51The Yankees two and the Giants nothing.
- 31:55Mads, there's one now. One plus. The new compact Dodge Darts.
- 32:00Oh, all the wheeled built-ins there.
- 32:03It's the new family size, family price, combat. The 1963 Dodge Darts. One of the Dodge dependables.

- 32:38See the compact dependable, the 1963 Dodge Darts, a product of Chrysler Corporation.
- 32:44Work quality, engine air, into every car.
- 33:01A big round of applause, greeting Willie Mays as he steps in to lead off
- 33:05one of the Giants in the second inning.
- 33:07It'll be Mays, Sepeta and Jim Davenport.
- 33:10For San Francisco here in the bottom of the second.
- 33:14Willie's a right handed batter with a three oh four batting average.
- 33:1749 home runs this year for Willie Mays. The first pitch is down low.
- 33:22Willie has been able to hit widey forward. Real good, George.
- 33:27Willie a low ball hitter, forward pretty much a low ball pitcher in all star games.
- 33:32He kind of wears that forward out.
- 33:34Here's the one in no pitch.
- 33:36Ball outside this one, just off the corner.
- 33:39Ball to it and no strike count.
- 33:41Willie has 141 runs batted in this season.
- 33:48Widey gets ready. Here's the two in no pitch.
- 33:51He swings and pops it out behind the plate. It's going to be out of play.
- 33:55Elston Howard coming back, he has no chance to get it.
- 33:59Willie has only face forward in all star competition.
- 34:03Never before in a World Series, but it's Joe Toja.
- 34:06He's had great success against Widey.
- 34:09But everything goes out to win the Joe in World Series play.
- 34:14Here's the two one pitch.
- 34:19Here's a line in the left field.
- 34:24Willie Mays slammed on a line between third and chart in the left field.
- 34:29And the Giants have their first face runner.
- 34:36Bring up the big first baseman, Orlando Sepeta.
- 34:41Sepeta's a right-handed batter, he has a 306 batting average.
- 34:4635 home runs, 114 runs batted in.
- 34:54Willie Mays at first base with no one out in the bottom of the second.
- 34:58Ford delivers, there's a swing and a miss.
- 35:02Willie has the green line from Alvin Dark.
- 35:04Whenever he thinks he's got a good enough jump, he can take off.
- 35:07He doesn't wait for any sign.
- 35:09I might just add here, George, that in this ballpark,
- 35:11Sepeta has more of a tendency to go in the right field.
- 35:14And Mickey Mail having this ballpark pretty well scouted is in right center.
- 35:18Here's the one strike pitch. She swings and misses again.
- 35:21A quick try to first. Mays back in time.
- 35:25Ford coming in with another low curve ball.
- 35:28Sepeta had a big ripple at it.
- 35:30That's a strike two count to Orlando.
- 35:35Everybody back on the infield, but Bill Scaran is holding the F the runner at first base.
- 35:42Ford gets that.
- 35:44Here's the two strike pitch.
- 35:46Strike three call to get the fastball over and Sepeta is called out on strikes.
- 35:51Orlando might have been looking for the curve, but the good fastball.
- 35:56That's one away.
- 35:58And the batter will be Jim Davenport at third baseman.
- 36:03Jim is a right-handed batter. He has a 297 batting average.
- 36:0714 home runs, 58 runs batted in.
- 36:15Here's the pitch. Curve ball up high.
- 36:18One ball, that's right.
- 36:21Just to give you an idea on the scouting reports, now Thoreau forced to pay the man who was in right center.
- 36:27Ford Davenport, he's in left center.
- 36:29Here's the one and no pitch.
- 36:31He swings and misses again.
- 36:33William Mays around second base. He's on his way to third.
- 36:36And Thoreau would go in to second.
- 36:46Jim Davenport, lined one.
- 36:49Over the head of the second baseman in the right center field.
- 36:52William Mays racing the third, so the Giants are threatening.
- 36:55They have runners that first and third with one out.
- 36:58And the batter will be the catcher, Ed Bailey.
- 37:06He has a left-handed batter. He has a 232 batting average.
- 37:0917 home runs, 45 runs batted in.
- 37:17Ford gets set.
- 37:19Here's the first pitch.
- 37:21He swings and pops it up down the first baseline.
- 37:24Richardson going over outside the line makes the catch.
- 37:29Ed Bailey, popping it up to the second baseman Richardson just outside the line.
- 37:36Willie Darren Richardson to throw that ball.
- 37:39Bobby L that ball ran it back to the infield.
- 37:42Willie was about three quarters of the way towards home plate.
- 37:45And finally with the full-arm bluff, Richardson had Willie going back.
- 37:49Willie was trying to draw a throw and maybe get a bad throw.
- 37:53But Richardson, who's been around a few years, very wisely racing the ball back into the infield.
- 37:58Not going to make a throw unless Willie writes for the plate.
- 38:02He's going to keep up on that maze, George. He can make a foul ball, exciting.
- 38:07So there's two outs. Here's the shortstop, Jose Pagán.
- 38:11Pagán a right-handed batter.
- 38:13Quick throw to third. He is safe on a close play.
- 38:17Boyer slipped over behind Maze and Ford fired it to Boyer and a very close play.
- 38:23Jim Honecek ruled him safe.
- 38:25Boyer thought he had him.
- 38:31I like to say, Joe, you never pick off a poor base runner. It's always a good one.
- 38:36Tell them don't take any chances. You can't steal a second if you've got your foot on first.
- 38:41Ford gets set. Here's the pitch to Pagán.
- 38:44He bonds. It's a good one down the third base line.
- 39:01Jose Pagán dropped a butt down the third base line.
- 39:05It was a dandy.
- 39:06Fighty Ford raced over, knocked it down, but he couldn't make a play.
- 39:10It'll be an infield single for Pagán. Willi Maze comes in. It's a two-to-one ball game.
- 39:15George, that's one of the real underrated baseball players in this National League.
- 39:19And he not only drives in a big run, but he gets the pitcher up there where you don't have to lead off the next inning with him if he does go out.
- 39:26Well, there's two on, two out.
- 39:28And here's Billy O'Dell. Billy batting right-handed against Ford.
- 39:33Swings and misses on a curve. One strike.
- 39:39Ford could not have thrown Pagán out.
- 39:42He'd have been able to come up with a ball. Almost a perfect bunch.
- 39:46Here's the pitch. Curved down low.
- 39:49Seeked out of the dirt by Elston Howard.
- 39:53One ball, one strike.
- 39:54The Giants have picked up a run here in the second. The Yankees lead two-to-one.
- 39:59Here's the one-one pitch.
- 40:01A ground ball hit up the middle.
- 40:03Kueber has it steps on the bag in fan for the out.
- 40:05Billy O'Dell bouncing to the shortstop. One run on three hits. No air, two men left.
- 40:10And the score at the end of two. The Yankees two, the Giants one.
- 40:15Hey, isn't that a beauty? What kind is it?
- 40:18That's the new compact Dodge Dart.
- 40:20No fooling.
- 40:24The Dependables are here and they're introducing the new 1963 Bucket Seat Dodge Dart GT.
- 40:30The new family-sized, family-placed comeback.

- 41:52The one ball no strike down, Billy O'Dell delivers a curve down low, ball two and no strike.
- 42:01Tresh had a single to center field his first time in bath that was in the first inning.
- 42:05It'll be Tresh, Mantle and Meras for New York in the third.
- 42:12O'Dell gets ready, there's the two and O pitch, strike, he got the curve ball over, a ball two and a strike one down.
- 42:21The Yankees have out hit the Giants four to three, they've out scored them two to one.
- 42:30There's the two one pitch, he swings and fouls it back, right back into the crowd behind the plate.
- 42:38Two and two to Tresh, Tommy a switch batter, batting right handed against the left hander Billy O'Dell.
- 42:49Billy looking in, takes off a couple of signs, there's the two to pitch, outside, three and two.
- 42:56Joe you've got to be ready behind this screen, there's no top on it behind the old plate.
- 43:00I almost want to bring a glove out here George, luckily the usual come up is high but I think the spectators make some great plays in this ball play.
- 43:08The old catchers all bring masks.
- 43:11What do you mean by that?
- 43:14There's the three two-pits to Tresh, he swings and pops it up behind second base, heller going out, there's a Lou coming in and did he catch it?
- 43:23He did, a diving catch by Lou.
- 43:34A little bit of a mix up between Heller and Phillip O'Lough and at the last moment a Lou made a diving catch, came up with a ball.
- 43:44O'Lough's one away and the batter will be Mickey Mowell.
- 43:47Mickey struck out his first time at bat.
- 43:55Here's the first pitch.
- 43:57The ball is too low, change your face as O'Lough took something off the fastball.
- 44:05Mickey batting right handed against the left hander.
- 44:12Here's the one in O'Pitch, strike, he got the fastball over, he got the outside corner, one ball, one strike.
- 44:21Back here at Candlestick tomorrow with the second game, and will be on to New York for the third game of the World Series which will be on Sunday.
- 44:31Here's the one one pitch, ball outside, a ball two and a strike one count.
- 44:40O'Dell has walked one man here today, he struck out four.
- 44:48Two one pitch to Mowell, down low, fastball low and in, three and one to Mickey.
- 44:54Roger Maris is in the on-deck circle, Mickey says the only word is him, George, is that he's healthy for this series, he doesn't have any excuses.
- 45:01The kids about it, but he has been ailing the other World Series, but this one he says he's in perfect shape.
- 45:09Here's the three one pitch, down low he walked him.
- 45:13Mickey Mantle draws a base on ball, walk number two given up by O'Dell, he's a runner at first base with one out, and the batter will be Roger Maris, the right fielder.
- 45:24Well, Roger had a two run double in the first inning, a ball that looked like it might have been out of the ballpark, a loo leaped up above the fence, got it in his glove and slapped it back on the playing field.
- 45:35Now, Loos had two plays and two real tough ones.
- 45:42Here's the pitch to Maris, he swings and fouls it back, ball hits the catcher, I believe on the mass, scooted back to the screen, one strike to Maris.
- 45:53Mickey Mantle is on at first base, there's one out, we're in the top of the third inning, the Yankees lead by a score of two to one.
- 46:03O'Dell gets set, here's the pitch, a swing at a man, Rod's trying to check it, but he's gone through with it, a strike two count.
- 46:11A man like Willie Mays, the Giants, has a green light to run anytime he feels he has the jump, and depending on how his legs feel, he doesn't have to wait for a steal sign.
- 46:25O'Dell is taking a little time as he looks in, here's the two strike pitch.
- 46:30Strike three count, the outside corner, and Maris is called out on strike.
- 46:40Strike out number five, Rodell, Maris didn't like to call on it, he didn't say too much, Joe Barlich.
- 46:46World and looked at him and sort of made a couple of marks across the outside of the plate, as it indicates the ball is outside, but Barlich, as Joe told you, very definite about his calls.
- 46:56Here's Elston Howard, the catcher.
- 46:59Ellie popped to the second baseman his first time, swings and bounces it foul down the first baseline, a one strike down.
- 47:08Well, a souvenir baseball for some fan who jumps out of the temporary seats, over the tarp and down onto the field to get the ball.
- 47:19A one strike count to Elston Howard.
- 47:23O'Dell ready, here it is, curve up high, one ball, one strike.
- 47:31On trace, he started the setting with a pop flat of the right fielder, Mickey Mannell, and drew a walk. Roger Maris was called out on strikes for the second out.
- 47:40Now it's a ball and a strike to Elston Howard.
- 47:46Here's the one one pitch, in tight, another fast ball that pushed him back, ball two and strike one.
- 47:56Billy O'Dell pitched in relief at Dodger Stadium in the second game of the playoffs.
- 48:08Here's the two one pitch, foul ball back to the crowd, two and two to Howard.
- 48:15Billy won 19 ball games this year, he was hoping to pick up a win in the playoffs, give him 20 for the year.
- 48:30So ball two and a strike two count to Howard.
- 48:36The Giants are deep, pretty much straight away in the outfield for Elston, he'll hit a lot in the right center field.
- 48:42Two two pitch, there goes the runner, here's the throw down to second base, he's safe.
- 48:46A stolen base for Mickey Mannell.
- 48:49Ed Bailey's throw was high and to the first base side, Chuck Hiller had no chance to put a tag on Mannell.
- 48:57As Joe told you, Mickey probably running on his own, he's been given the green light by Ralph Hout.
- 49:03He had a real good jump at first base, he kind of thought he was going to wait three and two.
- 49:08Here's the three two pitch, down low he walked him.
- 49:12Elston Howard draws a walk, that's number three given up by Billy, what's two on with two outs and the batter is Bill Scowin.
- 49:22The most drill walk his first time at bat.
- 49:27He's got a really wide into the strike zone though, when the base runners are on, George you don't really know what a bad ball is because any ball is thrown, he feels like he can hit it and he does a pretty good job of it.
- 49:37Here's one of the real good bad ball hitters, here's the pitch, in tight, fastball pushed him back.
- 49:44I like Stengel's description of him, in case he always called him a sarcastic hitter, look one way and hit the other.
- 49:51Remember the grand slam home run he hit in the World Series, I believe against Carl Spooner of the Dodgers.
- 49:57High outside fastball and he laced it on the line into the right field seats.
- 50:02Here's the one in open, ground ball that's fouled down the third base line.
- 50:08There's a curved ball that would have hit him right in the chest if he would have taken it, he just was cutting and slashing.
- 50:15The thing about Scowin, you play him the right field, you have to pitch him that way because everybody's moved around the right and if he should hit one down the left field line, of course we'll be in there.
- 50:24The big hole Keen is playing over is a big hole between Keen and Willie Mays in the left center field.
- 50:32One ball and one strike to the moose, two on, two outs in the third inning. The Yankees lead two to one.
- 50:40Here's the pitch, outside, that's one just off the corner.
- 50:45When you talk about outfields you play alongside Willie Mays, the way they play it is that they will guard from where they're standing to the line.
- 50:52They will guard from where he's standing to the left field line, now Lou from where he's standing to the right field line and to the left is all Willie Mays.
- 51:00Go ahead Willie, lot of room, Rome and Rome and Rome and he does.
- 51:04O'Dell gets set. Here's the two-one pitch.
- 51:08I pop fly over near the dugout, this is going to be out of play drifting back into the crowd. Two and two.
- 51:15Last couple of years I played Joe, I played alongside Louis Apparicio with the White Sox and I drew a mark out there at third base about two steps from where I was playing on the left side.
- 51:23I said, now Louis I'm not going to come over this mark and get in your way. So you've got everything from here to the second base back.
- 51:29That's like the position Yogi takes in left field when he turns it back to Manlis says, Mickey from my back over to you, that's yours pal, take it.
- 51:37Two and two to Skyron.
- 51:40Here's the two-two pitch.
- 51:42He swings in the f***ing out.
- 51:45Bill Saren strikes out no runs, no hits, no errors, two men left and the score at the end of the first half of third inning.
- 51:52The Yankees two and the Giants one.
- 51:55Hey, what kind of a car is that?
- 51:58That is the new compact Dodge Dark. Your chip.
- 52:03Yet set for an adventure in the world of compact cars in Dodge Dark, the new compact Dodge for 63. It's the compact that refuses to skimp on anything but price and gas.
- 52:15Dark with room, comfort and performance you may think a compact has no right to have, but this one has it. Dark for 63.
- 52:24The compact with extra size and muscle that puts it in a class by itself. It's the new family size, family priced compact Dodge, engineered by Chrysler Corporation.
- 52:35One of the dependables. See it and drive it at your dealers. The 1963 Dodge Dark, a product of Chrysler Corporation.
- 52:44We're in quality, and you need to drive into every car.
- 52:55Well, we move along into the bottom of the third inning. It's a two to one ball game. The Yankees out in front.
- 53:02New York picked up two in the top of the first inning on two singles and a double bar meris and the Giants got one on a butt single by Pagano in the second inning.
- 53:11George, you know how scientifically scheme of baseball is. Here's Harvey Keene, one of the great tobacco tures, and he's the wrong side tobacco ture because he's got the wand on his side that faces the pitcher which causes him to squint his eyes.
- 53:23Now, Nellie Fox chews on the backside, which leaves his front eye complete vision of the pitcher. How about that for science?
- 53:30That's great observation.
- 53:32Not me. That's what they're telling me. It's the Keene's the chew on the other side.
- 53:35There's the pitch to Keene. He swings and fouls it back. One strike. Boy, one chew to that, and I couldn't hit anybody on either side.
- 53:44They tell me, and Harvey says, well, I guess they're right. He said, Fox was out hitting me, but I never realized it.
- 53:53Hey, there's not many people out hitting Harvey Keene over his lifetime average.
- 53:57No, sir.
- 53:58A one strike count. Ford gets ready. Here's the pitch. A high pop foul behind the plate. There's Howard coming back, but he's drifting into the crowd.
- 54:07Strike two to Harvey. He's struck out in the first inning. It'll be the top three in the batting order. Keene, Hiller, and Alou.
- 54:16You know one of the things that was lost in that playoff game yesterday, George, was Harvey Keene really running hard down that first base line to just get a force play instead of the double plane at ninth inning.
- 54:24That was all important, and it was close. Here's the two strike pitch. Ground ball to third base. Boy, here has it. There's a long throw to first. He's out.
- 54:34Harvey Keene slammed one hard straight to the third baseman, Boy, here.
- 54:39Bring up the second baseman, Chuck Hiller. Chuck Sofewany popped the cue back his first time at bat.
- 54:50Hiller a left handed batter. This youngster had a fine season for the Giants, 276 batting average.
- 55:00The first pitch is a curve line in the left center field. Here's Manow chasing it down. Hiller on his way to second. He'll go in with a double.
- 55:08The throw is coming to third base. Ford comes over to back it up. Chuck Hiller, Lyons a double up the alley in the left center field, and the Giants have a tying run at second base with only one out.
- 55:32Bring up the right fielder, Philip Waloo. He was out on a tap back to the mound his first time at bat.
- 55:41Just had the attendance passed along to us. 43,852 here at Candlestick Park today. 43,852. Ford gets set.
- 55:57Here's a quick throw to second. He is safe. The ball got away from Bobby Richardson.
- 56:02That's one thing these Yankees do and do so well. Maybe they don't get there, man, but if nothing else, they'll cut your lead down, maybe a step or two, and that'll make the difference in getting you and not getting you at the plate.
- 56:13Hiller had a good lead, and you can bet that he won't be leading off as far this time since Ford attempted to pick off.
- 56:20Why do you get set? Here's the first pitch to a little curveball. It hired the left fielder. Here's Hiller, around 30, is going to be held up.
- 56:30That was George. They were able to have him breaking back as Ford delivered. One out, double play is still in order. It's the little things that certainly play off.
- 56:44A line shot in the left fielder by Philippe Olu, putting runners at first and third with one out, and the batter will be Willie Mays.
- 56:58Willie had a single his first time at bat. He scored the only giant run.
- 57:03The Yankees are going to play back on the infield. Everybody back with the exception of Scowern.
- 57:12Here's the pitch to Mays. He swings and pops it up. It's going to be out of play. This one drifting into the lower deck behind the giant dugout.
- 57:21One strike counter, Willie. Jim Coats, a big tall right-hander, throwing in the bullpen for New York on the right fielder line.
- 57:32Harvey Keane started the inning with a ground ball at third base. Hiller then doubled the left center. Olu singled the left, putting runners at first and third.
- 57:43Willie Mays dining in. Here's the pitch. He swings and lands with the center fielder. And Sully hit for Mays. Olu's going to stop at second base as Hiller comes in the store.
- 57:56Willie Mays lined one up the middle in the center fielder. It's a tie ball game at 2-2. The giants still have runners at first and second.
- 58:12Only one out, and the batter will be Sopeta.
- 58:16So three straight hits. Here's the third inning after the first batter had been retired. Sopeta was called out on strikes his first time at that.
- 58:30Strong right-handed batter. Ford delivers. Curved down low. One ball, that's right.
- 58:38Sopeta is known as a good breaking ball hitter, but Ford was able to get him by and snap on the curve ball down and in. Bad balls and Orlando chased him.
- 58:48Here's the one and no pitch. He swings and bounces it foul. Another curve ball breaking down and in. One ball, one strike.
- 58:56Jim Coats throwing in the bullpen for the Yankees. The giants coming alive here in the third inning.
- 59:05A double and two singles after the first batter had been retired.
- 59:13Whitey Ford getting set. Here's the one-one pitch. A ground ball to the second baseman. Over to Q-back, one out, back to first to double play.
- 59:23Sopeta hits into a fast double play. Second to short to first. One run on three hits. No errors. One man left.
- 59:31And the score at the end of three. The Giants two and the Yankees two.
- 59:35Have you heard about the automobile industry's first five year or 50,000 mile warranty?
- 59:40Five years? 50,000 miles?
- 59:43That's right. It's the warranty now offered on 1963 Chrysler Corporation cars.

- 1:00:03Stay tuned for details later in this game.
- 1:00:06Let's pause 30 seconds now for our station identification.
- 1:00:12A-10 on your dial. This is WGY Schenectady. It's amazing how a major league team can snap back fast when it's down.
- 1:00:19When you're feeling down, you too can snap right back to the cold, sparkling pressure, Saratoga Vichy.
- 1:00:25Instant pick-me-up tang. So tantalizing, it's delicious all by itself.
- 1:00:29And Saratoga's naturally livelier spring, fresh flavor adds zip life and sparkle to every mixed drink.
- 1:00:36So for that finger snapping, toe tapping, taste and feeling, be sure it's Saratoga Vichy with the yellow label.
- 1:00:43Clams along, flying to left center. Mays going over, he makes a catch.
- 1:00:49Fleet Boyer swinging on the first pitch and a fly ball in the left center field.
- 1:00:53Willie Mays racing over, pulled it in so there's one away and the batter will be Whitey Ford.
- 1:00:59Whitey was a strikeout victim his first time at that.
- 1:01:03The ball by Boyer was well hit but the wind is blowing from left field to the right field corner which held it up.
- 1:01:11Here's the pitch to Whitey. Strike, he got a fast ball around the knees.
- 1:01:15Whitey a left handed batter. The Giants are playing in close and around to the left.
- 1:01:22Odell delivers a swing at him in. Strike two.
- 1:01:27It's got to look like he's hitting with seven infielders out there. George is shallow as the keenest playing in Willie Mays,
- 1:01:32especially Willie is right in his short center. Here's the two strike pitch.
- 1:01:37Ground ball hit hard to second base. Stiller has it to throw to first in plenty of time.
- 1:01:42Whitey Ford goes up, second to first.
- 1:01:46It's two down and the batter will be Tony Cuback. Tony's had a single in two trips.
- 1:01:51He struck out in the first inning. Single to center field in the second.
- 1:01:55Odell ready? The first pitch. He pops it up into shallow left field.
- 1:01:59Here's Keween coming in. Should have no trouble, he makes the catch.
- 1:02:03He's coming back, flies to left. There are no hits, no errors, no unleft.
- 1:02:07And the shorty into the first half of fourth inning. The Yankees two and the Giants two.

- 1:02:40The torque converter, the driveshaft, the universal joints excluding dust covers.
- 1:02:44The rear axle and differential and rear wheel bearings provided the car has been serviced at reasonable intervals according to Chrysler's certified car care schedules.
- 1:02:52Factory approved remanufactured parts may be used for replacement.
- 1:02:56As you know, these are the expensive parts to repair or replace and the warranty has a certificate for change of ownership.
- 1:03:03See your authorized Chrysler Corporation dealer and ask about his new five year or 50,000 mile warranty.
- 1:03:09Another first from Chrysler Corporation.
- 1:03:15Jim Davenport will lead off for the Giants in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:03:19They'll be followed by Ed Bailey and then Jose Pagán.
- 1:03:22It's a 2-2 ballgame as we go into the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:03:26The Giants have out hit the Yankees six to four.
- 1:03:30Pagán driving in one run with a bunch single.
- 1:03:35Here's the pitch to Davenport. It's down low. One ball, no strikes.
- 1:03:39And Willie Mays driving in the second giant run with a lion single to center after Marist drove in two with a double for the Yankees.
- 1:03:48Strike, he got a curve ball over. Jim Davenport a right handed batter.
- 1:03:56Warrior in close at third base.
- 1:04:00Here's the pitch. This one in the dirt. Stips away from Elston Howard.
- 1:04:10Willie getting a new baseball from Al Barley to play down par.
- 1:04:14Second game of this World Series will be right here tomorrow afternoon.
- 1:04:18Jack Sanford and Ralph Terrier will be the pitchers a couple of right handers.
- 1:04:23The pitch to Davenport. Outside, this one off the corner.
- 1:04:32A ball three and a strike one count to the lead off man.
- 1:04:36Whitey Ford gets ready. Here's the pitch.
- 1:04:43Down low. Ball over the plate with two low. Davenport goes the walk.
- 1:04:48So the Giants have a runner at first place. There's no one out and the batter will be Ed Bailey.
- 1:04:54Ed Zofa won. He fouled at the second baseman Richardson behind first place his first time at Vett.
- 1:05:01Yankees are ready for the bun. Warrior in close at third base.
- 1:05:08Scour and holding against the runner. There's a quick throw to first. Davenport back in town.
- 1:05:14Bailey gave no indication he would be but in that time George went four through all.
- 1:05:18A lot of times you get a lot of help like that but you certainly have to look for that bun.
- 1:05:21I know I'd be looking for it. So would you huh? Right.
- 1:05:25Here's the pitch to Bailey. Ball down low. He checked his swing.
- 1:05:30One ball. That's right. That's three of us you got. He got you, me and Boyer.
- 1:05:34Boyer is just going to be ready now. He doesn't figure the left hander to hit the ball down that way.
- 1:05:40He's right in on top of us like he used to play mantel. He's moved right in on top of us.
- 1:05:45He's batting left handed. He's not going to hit the ball that way anyway.
- 1:05:49Here's the one in O pitch. There's a high fly ball in the shallow right field. Roger Maris moving in waiting on it.
- 1:05:56He's got it. There's one away. Ed Bailey out on a fly ball to right field.
- 1:06:02Bring up the shortstop Pagan. Nice round of applause for this youngster.
- 1:06:07He had a butt single. Back in the second inning with two outs and Willie Mays a third base.
- 1:06:13Surprised everybody.
- 1:06:15Not to be alive for pretty much anything with that Pagan up there.
- 1:06:18Dark likes to use a hit and run play. More is a defensive maneuver than a first and third situation. More to stay away from the double play and anything else.
- 1:06:26And this is the first opportunity that he's had with Pagan at batter's box and Davenport on its first base.
- 1:06:32They won't be getting much of a lead with Ford in that great move.
- 1:06:36He might just starting to break up the infield for Pagan to stay away from that double play.
- 1:06:41Why do you get ready? Here's the pitch. Ball too low. One ball in a strike.
- 1:06:47Davenport opened the inning with a walk. Ed Bailey then fly to Merrison right field.
- 1:06:52Now it's one ball, no strikes to the shortstop.
- 1:06:55Jose out of the box for just a moment checking with Whitey Lachman in the first base coach.
- 1:07:00West Westerm is coaching at first base for the Jones.
- 1:07:06There's the one and out pitch. He swings and bounces at foul up to the left. One ball, one strike.
- 1:07:16New baseball put into play by Al Barlich. Al Barlich the umpire behind the plate.
- 1:07:22Charlie Berry at first base. Stan Landis is down at second base. Jim Honichick at third base.
- 1:07:28Ken Burkhart and Hank Soar on the foul lines.
- 1:07:35One ball, one strike. Pagan waiting on Whitey Ford. Here it is.
- 1:07:41There's a fly ball behind second base. Bobby Richardson drifting out on the outfield grass.
- 1:07:46Waiting. He's got it. Bobby shading his eyes from the sun. It's a high sky here today.
- 1:07:52It's tough on those infield flies.
- 1:07:56West Westerm going over to talk to Davenport and you can almost figure what he's saying.
- 1:08:01Don't get picked off. Let's let Odell bat because you hate to have your pitchers start off in any fresh for you.
- 1:08:07You know, Odell himself says that anytime he hits a foul ball he kind of figures he is broken and slumped.
- 1:08:12Whitey ready. Here's the pitch. Ball up high. One ball, no strikes.
- 1:08:16Billy sent a ground ball to the shortstop his first time at bat.
- 1:08:21A runner at first base with two outs here on the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:08:25This ball game is all tied at two and two. The pitch is in there. Fast ball. One ball, one strike.
- 1:08:33Billy Odell, a right-handed batter against Whitey Ford.
- 1:08:38A couple of great left-handers going here today in the opening game of the 1962 World Series.
- 1:08:46Here's the one-one pitch. Ground ball is in the right field.
- 1:08:51Davenport's going to hold at second base.
- 1:08:56He'll be talking about that one, George, and I don't blame him.
- 1:08:59He just kind of slapped that ball. It was a curve ball. He swung down on it.
- 1:09:04And she found the hole between first and second.
- 1:09:07And now he's got a chance to go into that lead by getting that base hit on his second base.
- 1:09:12Davenport and Harvey Keane.
- 1:09:15Now there's two on. Runners at first and second with two down. And the batter is Harvey Keane.
- 1:09:21Harvey struck out in the first inning. Grounded to the third baseman and the third.
- 1:09:27Billy Odell keeps it alive for the Giants.
- 1:09:31And it starts some action in the bullpen once again. Jim Coates getting up.
- 1:09:40Whitey Ford trying to get out of a jam here in the fourth inning.
- 1:09:44Giants have two on, two out. This ball game tied at 2-2.
- 1:09:48The pitch to Keane. Ground ball right back to the mound.
- 1:09:52Whitey has it on one hop. The throw to first and the side returns.
- 1:09:56No runs on one hit. No errors. Two men left in the score.
- 1:10:00The end of four. The Yankees two and the Giants two.
- 1:10:03Here are more details on the new warranty described earlier in this game.
- 1:10:06The new five-year or 50,000-mile warranty on 1963 Chrysler Corporation cars.
- 1:10:12This is the most important warranty ever offered on an automobile.
- 1:10:16It covers the powertrain, the workhorse of your car, the expensive parts to repair or replace.
- 1:10:22And the warranty is transferable if you sell the car.
- 1:10:25Well, at the end of four, the Yankees have two runs on four hits and no errors.
- 1:10:30The Giants have two runs on seven hits and no errors.
- 1:10:34Lobby Richardson will be the lead-off man for the Yankees here in the fifth inning.
- 1:10:39He'll be followed by Tom Tresh and then Mickey Mantle.
- 1:10:43The Yankees got two in the first on singles by Richardson and Tresh on a double-bar-marus driving in the runs.
- 1:10:51The Giants got one in the second inning, one in the third, but gone with a bunch single driving in the run in the second.
- 1:10:57And Willie Mays with a line single to center driving in a run in the third inning.
- 1:11:02George, about that time, we're going to start looking for that bump for the base hit.
- 1:11:06Richardson slams a ground ball foul down the third baseline. One strike.
- 1:11:13Lobby has singled and bounced for the shortstop in two trips.
- 1:11:19Odell ready, delivers a curve, here's a fly ball, hit the left field.
- 1:11:23Harvey Keene drifting over into left center, makes the catch.
- 1:11:27Harvey seemed to run in under the ball for just a moment, Joe.
- 1:11:30Couldn't flick his glasses down, they gave him a bit of trouble,
- 1:11:33he flicked them down, lost the ball, pushed them back up, found the ball and pushed them back down again.
- 1:11:39Once one away in the batter will be Tommy Tresh.
- 1:11:45Tommy's had a single in two trips, wide the right field his last time.
- 1:11:52Takes one inside, this one just off the corner, one ball and a strike.
- 1:11:57Both Tresh and the next batter, Manel or switch hitters, they're batting right handed against Odell.
- 1:12:06Billy into the wind up, there's the one in O-pitch.
- 1:12:09Inside, another curve ball breaking in on his fist, ball two and no strikes.
- 1:12:19Both clubs have threatened frequently throughout this ball game.
- 1:12:25Here's the two in O-pitch.
- 1:12:27Ground ball, hit to the second baseman, Giller has it, quick throw to first, he's out.
- 1:12:33Tommy Tresh goes out, second to first.
- 1:12:38Don't bring up Mickey Manel.
- 1:12:40Mickey struck out in the first inning, grew a walk in the third.
- 1:12:45The first pitch, ball in tight, fastball just off the corner.
- 1:12:49His pattern Odell against Manel has been to get that ball inside, both his fastball and his curve ball and Manel is pulling away from it.
- 1:12:58Here's the one in O-pitch, down low, this one in the dirt.
- 1:13:02Ball two and no strikes to Mickey.
- 1:13:05A two-two ball game, we're in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:13:09Billy O-Dell against Whitey Ford, there's the two in O-pitch to Manel.
- 1:13:14Ball up high, three and no to Mickey.
- 1:13:18Well, he's checking with Wally Moses, but I would imagine that this pitch is to his liking, he'll be swinging on the three and no pitch.
- 1:13:28Daily going out to remind Odell, I'm sure Gus will bat, George.
- 1:13:35I could almost see him drooling as if to say, come on, give me the hit sign, I want to turn his big bat loose.
- 1:13:37Probably saw Manel choke a little sawdust out of the end of that bat, getting ready for it.
- 1:13:42Two squeezes.
- 1:13:44There's the three and no pitch.
- 1:13:46He swings and lines his foul down the left field line, boy, he was going for the home run on that one.
- 1:13:52Giving him with the breaking ball, didn't give him that room service fastball or he would have really put a charge into it.
- 1:13:58It's a ball three and a strike one counter, Mickey.
- 1:14:01He's batting with two outs, no one on top of the fifth inning.
- 1:14:04This game all tied at two-two.
- 1:14:07Odell delivers foul ball, he changed up on him on the three-one pitch.
- 1:14:12Turned him fastball over, he'll do that to the right hand hitter a lot.
- 1:14:17Wonder what happened to the three-oh-three-one fastball, the pitches he used to throw right down the middle nice and hard.
- 1:14:24One hour high button shoes, I guess, George.
- 1:14:28Odell shaking off a couple of signs, gets one he likes.
- 1:14:32Here's a three-two pitch.
- 1:14:34Foul ball, this'll be out of play, back into the crowd.
- 1:14:37Still three and two to Manel.
- 1:14:45Odell getting a new baseball from Al Barlich.
- 1:14:50He was behind Mickey three and oh, and now it's three and two.
- 1:14:55Here's the pitch.
- 1:14:57Ground foul, this one bouncing into the on-deck circle.
- 1:15:01And the difference in that Odell, there's the first fastball he's thrown since he was three and oh.
- 1:15:05He's thrown breaking stuff, even a screwball.
- 1:15:12Billy looking in, a three-two pitch.
- 1:15:15Curve ball, it's in there.
- 1:15:18Mowl's all out on strike.
- 1:15:20No runs, no hits, no arrows, no one left.
- 1:15:23And the score at the end of the first half of the fifth inning, the Yankees two and the Giants two.
- 1:15:28Well, the first half of this game has been brought to you by the Chrysler Corporation.
- 1:15:32And the second half of this game is being brought to you by the Gillette Safety Razor Company.

- 1:16:55There's a first pitch to Hiller, and it's inside. One ball, no strikes.
- 1:16:59Shock a left-handed batter, he's got a double in two trips today.
- 1:17:03Ford delivers down low, ball two, no strikes.
- 1:17:07It'll be Hiller, a Lou and Mays, for the Giants here in the fifth inning.
- 1:17:18A 2-2 ball game in the bottom of the fifth. Ford ready.
- 1:17:23Here's the 2-0 pitch. Ball, it's down low. Three and out of Chuck.
- 1:17:31Chuck out of the box for a moment, checking with Whitey Lockman.
- 1:17:38Here's a 3-0 pitch, right down the middle of the fastball.
- 1:17:42Three and one to Hiller.
- 1:17:50Boyer is in on the edge of the grass, protecting against the bun.
- 1:17:54Here's the 3-1 pitch. Strike two.
- 1:17:57Hiller was on his way to first base. He turned and started the first on the run.
- 1:18:03Al Barley went up to the right hand. A 3-2 count for the leadoff man.
- 1:18:13Ford ready. Here it is.
- 1:18:15High pop flat. This will be out of play. It's drifting back into the seats behind the Yankee dugout.
- 1:18:20And some youngster made a way to replace Joe.
- 1:18:23Yes, he did. He brought his glove in. There is life's more glorious moment here.
- 1:18:28Had it for this world series. He's probably staying alive to Walter Chirac right now, looking down at him, Jordan.
- 1:18:34How about that?
- 1:18:36Wide up play. The youngster brought his glove in. He caught it. Here's a 3-2 pitch.
- 1:18:40A swing and a foul. This one off to the left.
- 1:18:43Ball hit Hiller on the foot. Rolls down the third base line. Still three and two.
- 1:18:51The Yankees took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
- 1:18:55The Giants got one in the second, one in the third to tie it up.
- 1:18:59That's where we are. 2-2 here in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:19:03Ford into the wind up. The pitch. A swing and a miss. He struck him out.
- 1:19:08Chuck Hiller goes down swinging as Whitey gets the 3-2 curve ball over.
- 1:19:18That's one away and the batter will be Fully Pallu, the right fielder.
- 1:19:23He tapped to the pitcher in the first inning, swinging the left field in the third.
- 1:19:29Pallu a right-handed batter. The pitch. Strike. He got a fast ball over.
- 1:19:38Pallu has made two good plays in right field today.
- 1:19:43The one strike pitch. Change of pace. He pops it up behind the plate.
- 1:19:48This one back in the crowd. Two strikes to a Liu.
- 1:19:54In the first inning, a Liu went back to the fence, leaped up and slapped Marist's long-fly ball back into the playing field.
- 1:20:02Tell him to a double, preventing the home run.
- 1:20:05He had a fine diving catch on a pop plow at the bat of Tom Trench.
- 1:20:13A two strike count. Ford delivers. Inside.
- 1:20:19Trying to get the inside corner with a fast ball. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:20:28One out with no one on here in the fifth inning.
- 1:20:33He's going to the wind up. The one two pitch. He struck him out with a fast ball by him.
- 1:20:38Fully Pallu goes down swinging.
- 1:20:42That's two down. And the batter will be Willie Mays. A must for this ovation for Mays.
- 1:20:47Willie has had two singles and two trips.
- 1:20:52Amazing the way he hit this whitey Ford. He hit them in an all-star game spring training here today.
- 1:20:58Two for two. Ford ready. Here's the pitch.
- 1:21:05There's a line drive in the left field.
- 1:21:09Willie Mays in a low liner. Cubak trying to block the ball and it's put it in the left field.
- 1:21:16One ball went by Cubak. It looked like a knuckle ball. The way it's shot to his right, Cubak tried to get in front of it and couldn't.
- 1:21:23Willie now in a good spot here with two outs to try to steal it. So it'll be a good base runner against probably a great move as far as left-handed pitches are concerned.
- 1:21:32Whitey Ford has a good one.
- 1:21:35It'll be interesting to see what happens. Orlando's the pay to the batter.
- 1:21:40Takes a curve down low. One ball and a strike.
- 1:21:44Willie Mays at first base with two outs.
- 1:21:48The pay to was called out on strikes in the second inning and the third he bounced into a double play.
- 1:21:58There's the one in O pitch. Ball inside. Ball to and a strike.
- 1:22:04George both is Mays and Mannell certainly typify the new breeder ball player. The fellow who's got the tremendous power can hit the home run for you and steal the base when your ball club needs it.
- 1:22:13It used to be that just hit the home runs and barely run but now it's a combined ball for a complete one.
- 1:22:23Whitey checking his runner. Here's the pitch. A high fly ball into shallow right field. Richardson going out. This may be trouble. Bobby's got it on the run.
- 1:22:31The pay to pops the second base. No runs on one hit. There were no errors. One man left. The score at the end of five. The Yankees two and the Giants two.
- 1:22:41Bobby Richardson making a fine play going into right field and now I was talking to him in the clubhouse the other day. Let's listen.
- 1:22:48I see you've got several dispensers of Gillette's Super Blue Blades there in your locker, Bobby.
- 1:22:52Yes, Mel. I don't ever want to be caught short of Super Blues if I can help it. I'm really soul on those quick clean shades. Nothing like it.
- 1:23:01Now Bobby repeats what millions upon millions of men say about the Super Blue Blades. Men who've made it the world's most popular blade by far. An exclusive Gillette process gives them edges so keen, so smooth they whisked through the toughest beard like it wasn't even there.
- 1:23:17The finishing slave. Clean, quick shades you have to experience to believe and Super Blues are double edge for added convenience. More shades for blades. Enjoy the unparalleled comfort of Super Blue Blades and the new Gillette Slim adjustable razor.

- 1:23:58Roger Merritt will lead off in the sixth inning for the Yankees. He'll be followed by Howard and then Scowern.
- 1:24:11Here's the first pitch. Now ground ball hit to the second baseman. Giller has it. Here's the flip to first and Merritt's is out.
- 1:24:18Roger Merritt's swinging on the first pitch goes out second to first. Now bring up Elston Howard. Ellie has popped the second and drawn a walk in two trips. One for one officially.
- 1:24:37Odell ready. Here's the pitch. Strike, he got the fast ball over. One strike to Elston Howard. We're on the top of the sixth inning. We're all tied at 2-2.
- 1:24:51Here's the one strike pitch. Down low. One and one to Howard. The Giants have eight hits. The Yankees four.
- 1:25:04Here's the one-one pitch. He swings and lines it up the middle into center field.
- 1:25:09Ellie Howard lines a single to center. Tip number five for New York. The runner at first base, one out and the batter will be Bill Scowern.
- 1:25:19Bill drew a walk in the second. Struck out in the third inning.
- 1:25:32The first Yankee hit since Cubak singled in the second inning. Scowern a big right-handed batter. The pitch inside. He pushed him back. One ball and a strike.
- 1:25:53Jack Sanford and Ralph Terry will be the pitchers here tomorrow in the second game of the World Series. Here's the one-and-no pitch.
- 1:26:03Inside. Other fast ball in close. Two-and-no. Joe, they seem to be trying to keep the ball in on his fist.
- 1:26:12I saw that bat right off to keep him from going in the right field. You know, he ran into a streak this summer, Scowern, where he wasn't swinging that bat and Ralph Hough would start base runners and actually put on a play more to get Scowern to swing than anything else.
- 1:26:25Here's the two-and-no pitch. He swings and hits a ground ball in the third base. Davenport goes the second one out back to the first.
- 1:26:36Bill Scowern hits into a fast double-plane. He'll run down one hit, nowhere else no one left, and the score at the end of the first half of sixth inning. The Yankees two, the Giants two.

- 1:27:46Now let's pause here 30 seconds for our station identification.
- 1:28:16WGY is connected.
- 1:28:22Long into the bottom of the sixth inning, it's a 2-2 ballgame here at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. Jim Davenport will lead up, he'll be followed by Ed Bailey and then Jose Pagan.
- 1:28:36Davenport's out a single and a walk in two trips. There's a curve and it's in there, one strike.
- 1:28:48Davenport a right-handed batter, chokes the bat. The pitch, outside, a small off the corner. One and one to Jimmy. Yankees play him straight away, not too deep.
- 1:29:01Boy you're in a couple of steps at third base. There's the one-one pitch. A ground ball hits slowly to the shortstop.
- 1:29:09Cuba has it, the throw to first, he's out. Jim Davenport goes out, short to first. One away and the batter will be Ed Bailey, the catcher.
- 1:29:22Ed Zofa too, fouled at the second base, one and fly to right field.
- 1:29:32Eddie a left-handed batter.
- 1:29:38Davenport into the wind-up, the pitch, ground ball hit hard to the shortstop. Cuba has it, the throw to first, he's out. Bailey goes out, Cuba to scour. Two down and the batter will be the shortstop Jose Pagan.
- 1:29:56As you made mention of Joe a few moments ago, this fellow will be trying to get on there for a lot of reasons. He'd like for Odell to bat this inning instead of leading off in the seventh.
- 1:30:06So the Yankees will be watching for the bat.
- 1:30:11He's got him back, George, first and third. Boy it looks like he may be setting up some kind of a decoy.
- 1:30:18He might move in with the pitch, but he's back right now. Here's the pitch. A ground ball hit wide at third. Cuba will have to hurry his throw. Here it is, he's safe.
- 1:30:35Or when you can go down the first base line like that, Joe, you haven't got too many problems in this game. I would have been out by a step.
- 1:30:43The only problem you got is hope that your inner-soles are in good shape when you're coming into the ballpark. George, he's done a great job hitting an eighth spot because that's got to be the toughest spot in the lineup.
- 1:30:52They're not going to give you that good ball to hit. They know the pitcher is coming up next and yet Pagan has had that Odell up there every time. Odell has one base hit, which is quite a year for him.
- 1:31:02Well, here's Billy stepping in again. Board checks his runner, delivers, curve down low. One ball, no strikes. Cubak made a good play on Pagan's down ball.
- 1:31:13He went in the hole, scooped it up and made a quick throw to first and a good throw. But it wasn't even a contest. Here's the one in O-pitch. He tries to butt, but he missed it. One ball, one strike.
- 1:31:27Odell trying to bun his way on there, catching Boyer back at third.
- 1:31:36Billy's a good base runner. This fellow was an all-round athlete in his college days.
- 1:31:44Board ready. The one-one pitch. A swing and a miss. He got the curve ball by him around the knees. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:31:53He may have heard his left wrist as he swung at that curve ball. He swung down. He's out of that batter's box right now. Just taking a little bit of time.
- 1:32:03He took a real hard cut at the curve ball, swinging down and something may have snapped. He's just kind of swinging, getting loose once again. It's his left wrist.
- 1:32:15Al Dark has moved out of the dugout. Now Al's going back. He took a couple of steps out to find out. I believe Billy says he's going to be all right.
- 1:32:24I think it is his left wrist. Of course, that's the one he's been snapping these curve balls with. Dark is a little bit concerned about it.
- 1:32:34Here's the one-two pitch. A ground ball right back to the mound. Whitey Ford flips it over to Scowern in plenty of time.
- 1:32:41No runs on one hit. There were no errors. One man left and the score at the end of six full innings of play. The Yankees two and the Giants two.
- 1:32:49Well, fans don't miss out on the 1962 Gillette World Series Special that saves you 34 cents. Now first you get the new streamlined Gillette Slam Adjustable Razor.
- 1:32:59The Slam Adjustable is easier to handle. It has a newly designed head for hard to reach shaving areas. With it is a dispenser of remarkably double-edged Gillette Super Blue blades that gives all but incredible shaving comfort.
- 1:33:13Then there's a 79-cent can of Gillette foamy, the rich instant lather that more and more men go for every day. It all adds up to a $2.29 value that costs only $1.95.
- 1:33:25Get the Gillette World Series Special and save 34 cents. At the end of six we're all tied at 2-2 here at Candlestick Park.
- 1:33:35Two runs, five hits and no errors for New York. The Giants have two runs on nine hits and they have no errors.
- 1:33:43Fleet Boyer is going to lead it off for the Yankees. He'll be followed by Whitey Ford and then Tony Kueback. Fleet Zofa too. He stuck out in the second inning.
- 1:33:57Fly to center field in the fourth. Oh, Dale gets ready. Here's the first pitch. A foul ball back to the screen. George S. C. Stuemiller is beginning to loosen up down in the left field corner so apparently Odell has said something to his manager that his wrist may be bothering him.
- 1:34:19He's certainly not in any trouble. It could be that he hurt his wrist. There's a ground ball foul back of the plate. Two strikes to cleave.
- 1:34:35Boyer right handed batter. There's the two strike pitch. Outside this one just off the corner. One and two to Boyer.
- 1:34:51A Giants play cleat as a pull hitter. Here's the pitch. Way a foul of this one and Billy is being bothered Joe. There's no doubt about that. He seemed to give with the wrist then.
- 1:35:01He's kind of flinching as he turns that ball loose. If nothing else it's certainly on his mind. Here's the two two pitch. There's a line drive deep in the left field. Keen going back to the fence. It's gone a home run for Boyer.
- 1:35:17A line drive over the left center field fence by a plate boyer and the Yankees have gone out in front by a score of three to two. Joe that one never did get up in the wind. It had no chance to be bothered by the wind.
- 1:35:33Never got up or never got down. Just went straight out high enough to clear that fence. A two two pitch looked like a passball. He jumped on it and really set one right out of here. Three sixty five in left center field. There's nothing cheap about any home runs hit here in Candlestick.
- 1:35:47Three sixty five in left center. Three seventy five in right center. Four ten in dead center field. There's Whitey Ford. Takes a ball up high. One ball and strikes.
- 1:35:57Whitey has struck out and bounced to the second baseman in two trips. O'Dell delivers it's in there. One ball one strike.
- 1:36:09Stu Miller a right hander is throwing in the bullpen for the Giants down the left field line.
- 1:36:15Here's the one one pitch inside a fastball that was just off the corner. Ball two and strike one. A home run by a boyer here in the seventh and the Yankees have gone in front three to two.
- 1:36:35Here's the two one pitch. He swings and misses. Leaving the count at two and two to Whitey Ford. Tony Q-Back is in the on deck circle.
- 1:36:49O'Dell ready. The pitch. Ground foul bouncing behind the plate. Still two and two.
- 1:36:59Well after the two games here in Candlestick today and tomorrow Saturday will be an off day for traveling will open in Yankee Stadium on Sunday in New York.
- 1:37:09There's a strike the fastball in around the knees and Whitey Ford is called out. One away and the batter will be Tony Q-Back.
- 1:37:21Eight strikeouts for Billy O'Dell. Q-Back had one hit in three trips. Stuck out single and fly to left field.
- 1:37:35Billy taking a little time right now. Doing a little repair work on the pitching rubber. The pitch to Q-Back. Strike fastball in around the knees.
- 1:37:49One strikeout.
- 1:37:57Billy into the wind up. The pitch. A swing and a miss. He got the curve ball by him. Boy that was a good curve ball Joe.
- 1:38:05That ball right in that spot all the time and Bob Skinner says the only folks can hit that George. Your ball players who are now announcing.
- 1:38:15Got a blast at it. Oh boy. Strike pitch ball. It's up high. One ball two strikes.
- 1:38:24You have to give Q-Back credit. He swung at it. I usually took that kind. Open the entire with miss it. I always wonder why they even threw it.
- 1:38:33The one two pitch. A ground ball hit up the middle. Heller going over. He can't get it. Q-Back has his second hit. A ground ball single up the middle.
- 1:38:44He's number seven for the Yankees. What's a runner at first base with one out and Bobby Richardson steps in.
- 1:38:52Well we talked about it when the Giants had it with Pagano and Davenport and Yankees now have a hit and run situation where they can go to something if they were choose.
- 1:39:01Bailey's out talking to Odell. You can bet that he's asking Odell to give Q-Back a good look at first base to give him a chance to make a play.
- 1:39:09You can really handle that bad Q-Back a good base runner. Stay away from the big double play. They might break up that infield. They'd like to get trash man when there is up there.
- 1:39:19Bobby Richardson had one hit and three trips today single in the first inning. Billy Odell looking in. Here's the pitch. There's a line drive to left. Harvey Keane is coming in and makes the catch.
- 1:39:35Bobby Richardson lying the ball right straight to Harvey Keane in left field. He stood down and the batter will be Tom Trash.
- 1:39:45Bobby singled and scored a run in the first inning. He tried to right field in the third. A loom at a good play on him and he bounced the second base in the fifth inning.
- 1:39:59A runner at first base with two outs. The pitch. A ground foul off the third base head. One strike to Trash and he might have broken his bat on that when he's going back to the dugout to get a new war club.
- 1:40:14Boyer started the inning with a home run. That broke the 2-2 tie. Whitey Ford struck out. Q-Back single to center and Richardson had just lined the left field. Q-Back at first base two outs. The pitch.
- 1:40:29Ground ball hit the third base. Davenport has it to flip the second he's out. Tommy Trash bouncing to the third baseman. One run on two hits. No errors. One man left and the score at the end of the first half of the seventh inning. The Yankees three and the Giants two.
- 1:40:46Well Jim Davenport coming up with that ground ball and here's a clubhouse chatter like you to hear between Jim and Russ Hodges.
- 1:40:52You've got a Gillette slim adjustable razor Jim. I suppose you're a super blue-blade man too. Sure am Russ. How do you like them? First time I used them I was amazed. I never had such clean comfortable shades.
- 1:41:04That's why Jim and millions of others get such incredible results. Engineers call the remarkably clean edges of super blues a scientific breakthrough. They're produced by an exclusive Gillette process. You get such smooth refreshing shades with so little effort why you might look twice to see if there's a blade in your razor at all.
- 1:41:24A dispenser is included with Gillette's newest razor. The streamlined slim adjustable. It's lighter longer with a compact design that makes it a breeze to get at those awkward shaving areas.
- 1:41:35Slim adjusts to nine different blade settings and one is just right for your skin and beard. Right now the Gillette World Series special includes razor and blades plus a seventy nine cent can of homey instant leather. It's a two twenty nine value for only a dollar ninety five. You can save yourself thirty four cents.
- 1:42:01While it's a three two ball game as we go into the bottom of the seventh inning the Giants will send up the top of their batting order. Harvey Keane will be the leadoff man.
- 1:42:10He'll be followed by Chuck Hiller and then Philippe Allure.
- 1:42:15Dale Long has gone in to play first base for the Yankees here in the seventh inning in place of Bill Scowern.
- 1:42:25Here's the pitch to Keane. Strike you get the fastball over. Harvey bluffed a butt down the third baseline.
- 1:42:34He wants to get Boyer in close to give him a chance to slam one by him.
- 1:42:39A one strike down.
- 1:42:41Ford delivers a ground ball right back to the mound. Why do you pick it up the first and plenty of time. Harvey Keane goes out. Picture the first. Been able to change speeds very effectively since the fourth inning on he got Keane and that fourth with the change up and why he has been letting up not only on his fastball but on his curve ball with Keane.
- 1:43:03He led up on his fastball and had Harvey way out in front.
- 1:43:06Here's Chuck Hiller. He's had a double in three trips today. Ford delivers a fastball. It's in there. One strike.
- 1:43:16Bottom of the seventh inning. There's one out with no one on the Yankees three in the Giants two. Here's the pitch down low one and one.
- 1:43:25There's Chuck Hiller. Chuck doubled and scored the second John run back in the third inning. Left handed batter choking the bat.
- 1:43:39Here's the one one pitch. Outside call two and strike one. Alston Howard walking out in front of the plate fires the ball back to Whitey Ford.
- 1:43:53He's out here at Candlestick Park. They're getting their rhythmic applause.
- 1:43:58You get something going for the Giants. Here's the two one pitch. There's a high pop line here. The man who's going to make the play.
- 1:44:06Boyer shading his eyes makes the catch. Pleat was having a lot of trouble with the sun on that one Joe.
- 1:44:12That glasses and everything. George and had to end up shielding his eyes with the bare hand. It's a real high sky here.
- 1:44:18Players like to see those clouds up there at a break that high sky but today there are none here at Candlestick and it's a little bit of a problem for the pop line.
- 1:44:30Philip Alou the batter. He singled in the third inning. He's bounced to the pitcher and struck out his other two trips.
- 1:44:37Takes a fastball around the knees. One strike.
- 1:44:41The shape is kind of a stiff hitter until he swings that bat. They call him the mechanical man. They kid him about. They wind him up to begin the season and tell him to go out and hit 300 and he does it.
- 1:44:51He's doing a good job Joe. Here's the pitch. Strike two. The fastball over the inside corner. Alou seemed to be looking for the curve on the first two pitches.
- 1:45:01Whitey Ford coming in with a good fastball. A strike two count.
- 1:45:09Whitey looking in.
- 1:45:14There's the two strike pitch. Brown foul. This one hits him on the foot. Bounces off to the right.
- 1:45:20Mentioned earlier in the ball game having talked to Howard at Ford usually gives him three pitches to work with in the ball game and you can see how he's completely switched from the track breaking curveball to where he's let up on both his curveball and his fastball.
- 1:45:34And now with Alou up there who he's been able to get with the curveball twice although he did get one base hit. He hasn't shown him a curveball yet. George it's great when a fellow gives you more than one pitch to work with.
- 1:45:45Terrific Joe and this fellow Whitey Ford paces himself so well that he still has a good laugh fastball right here in the seventh inning.
- 1:45:53A strike two count. Here's the pitch. Swing and a miss he struck him out on a fastball. Alou goes down swinging.
- 1:46:01Now runs no hits no errors no one left the score at the end of seven the Yankees three in the Giants two.
- 1:46:07Well day alone just went in to play first place and Mel Allen caught up with day along the other day and must listen to him.
- 1:46:13What do you hear around the clubhouse Dale?
- 1:46:15If you mean shaving Mel most of the crew are talking up Gillette's new slim razor. They say it even tops the first adjustable. I'll have to get me one.
- 1:46:25And now is the time to get one before the Gillette World Series Special is out. It includes the new slim adjustable razor with a dispenser of amazing super blue blades that are so keen so smooth.
- 1:46:36It's hard to believe there's a blade in the razor. Plus a seventy nine cent can of Gillette foaming cream of all the instant lathers.
- 1:46:44It's a two twenty nine value for only a dollar ninety five you say thirty four cents. The slim adjustable is lighter longer with a newly designed shaving head for those awkward areas like under your nose and chin.
- 1:46:57And it's adjustable nine different blade setting and there's one just right for your skin and beard. Take advantage of this Gillette World Series Special now.
- 1:47:06Get the slam adjustable razor super blue blades and foaming a two twenty nine value for only a dollar ninety five.
- 1:47:19Mickey Mantle will be the lead off man for the Yankees here in the eighth inning.
- 1:47:23He's offered to in the ball game six one up high one ball no strikes.
- 1:47:28Joy's nobody will admit to guessing for a pitch but they all look for a pitch as you and I well know he's been inside with men. Let's see if he looks for it.
- 1:47:37Here it is inside. He pushed him back up all to it. I know strike count.
- 1:47:43You know they pitch a lot of hitters inside Joe good bull hitters hoping they'll reach in there and pull a couple of them foul and get two strikes on them and work a little better.
- 1:47:52Here's the two and no pitch. There's a fly ball at the left field team going back. He's near the fence and makes the cat.
- 1:48:00Mickey Mantle sending Harvey King back into the left field to get his fly ball.
- 1:48:06Mickey seemed to hit that ball down on the trademark. Didn't have the old ring to it.
- 1:48:12That's one away and the batter will be Roger Maris.
- 1:48:23Roger had a two run double in the first inning since then he struck out and bounced the second.
- 1:48:29The pitch strike fastball right down the middle.
- 1:48:35A one strike count to Roger Maris. Odell delivers a curve ball hit on the ground it's in the right field. Chuck Heller racing over couldn't cut it off and Roger Maris has his second hit.
- 1:48:50The Yankees that's number eight. It's a runner at first base with one out and the batter will be Elston Howard.
- 1:49:02Elie popped the second base his first time walked in the third single in the sixth inning.
- 1:49:12Dale Long moving into the on deck circle. Dale getting into the ball game in the bottom of the seventh for Bill Scowern.
- 1:49:22There's a pitch to Howard. A swing at him in. Fastball around the letters. One strike.
- 1:49:30Dale was taking a good long look at Maris at first base.
- 1:49:38Chuck's his runner again. The pitch inside did he hit him he did. Elston Howard is hit by a pitch ball as Odell let one get away from him.
- 1:49:49Maris goes down to second Howard at first base with one out and the batter will be Dale Long.
- 1:49:55Odell's curve ball here comes out in dark out of the giant dugout to talk to his pitcher Ed Bailey joined in the conversation.
- 1:50:01He started saying Odell's curve ball is a dive bomber type it breaks quickly and many times you'll catch that right hand hitter and nick him.
- 1:50:09Remember in the playoff it was Andy Kerry he hit with the curve ball. Here was Elston Howard he just got him where it looks like the hitter thinks he has the ball surveyed pretty well.
- 1:50:18And all of a sudden with that real quick break he'll just get him. Alvin Dunnick holding a short conversation with Odell quickly going back to the dugout.
- 1:50:31So it'll be Dale Long the batter with runners at first and second and one out. Long is a left handed batter.
- 1:50:42This follows with the Giants at one time. Here's the pitch. There's a base hit in the right field. Maris coming around third base is being waved in.
- 1:50:52Here's a throw to the plate. He is safe. The throw to third. He is safe at third base.
- 1:51:00Dale Long hit the first pitch hard between first and second on the ground in the right field. Maris coming in the store and Elston Howard moving around the third base.
- 1:51:11Sopeta cut off the throw and threw to third at Davenport but too late to get Howard.
- 1:51:16Now a four to two ball game. Runners at first and third one out and the batter will be Boyer.
- 1:51:22Pleats had one hit and three trips. That was a home run and the seventh inning that broke the tie. Let's pause here for station identification.
- 1:51:35This is WGY's Connected E and we're going to have a pitching change Joe. I believe it's going to be Don Larson the big right hander.
- 1:51:44How's it going? It's George Larson with the real good slider. This fellow has done great work for these Giants in relief.
- 1:51:50He's been strictly a relief pitcher for him and with one man out here and a right hand hitter Boyer the Giants are looking for the ground ball in the double play.
- 1:51:57Larson with a good fastball that sinks and a slider breaks down. It's a ground ball double play pitch.
- 1:52:05Oh yeah, getting a nice hand from this tremendous crowd here.
- 1:52:08Thank you.
- 1:52:10A new pitcher Don Larson. Big right hander will be coming on to pitch to Cleat Boyer with runners at first and third and only one out in the eighth inning.
- 1:52:34The Yankees have picked up one run here. So Boyer steps in. One hit and three trips. That was a home run and the seventh inning that broke a 2-2 tie.
- 1:52:43Larson gets set. Here's the pitch to Boyer. He was going to bunt. The pitch was high and inside. Boyer squared around.
- 1:52:51Larson came in high and tight with it. One ball and a strike.
- 1:52:56Howard didn't look like he didn't know a thing about it. George, he didn't break. It was going to be a safety squeeze if it were a play.
- 1:53:04It looks like the way Crossetti and Howard reacted that it was just Boyer's idea.
- 1:53:10Larson ready again. Here's the one and no pitch.
- 1:53:13High fly ball hit into a shallow left field. Keen is coming in. Howard is tagging up. The shortstop is out. They collide and somebody caught it. Here's the throw to the plate. He is safe at the plate.
- 1:53:26Pagan and Keen collided. Pagan held on to the ball. Made a good throw to the plate. It got away from the catcher. Bailey and Howard comes in to score.
- 1:53:37George, it looks like one of those plays where Crossetti told Howard that if Keen catches it whole, if Pagan makes the play, come on in because Pagan, after he collided, had his back just a bit towards the infield.
- 1:53:49He had to kind of turn around before he cut the throw loose. It was a good one.
- 1:53:54I thought they might get him at the plate, but the ball got away from Bailey and now it's a rerun lead for the Yankees.
- 1:54:00Five to two, the Yankees out in front. They along moved down the second base with two outs and the batter is whitey Ford.
- 1:54:09A pitch to Ford. Ball outside. One ball, no strikes. Keen was camped under the ball waiting on it and Pagan, racing back from shortstop, collided with Harvey, made the catch and as Joe told he was off balance, he had to turn completely around.
- 1:54:25He made a good throw to the plate, but he got away from Bailey and Howard scoring the run.
- 1:54:32A pitch to Ford. A swan in there. One ball, one strike.
- 1:54:37The communication between a giant player hasn't been good at all today. Pagan and Keen on this play.
- 1:54:42Remember earlier in the ball game, Philippe Ballou had to make a tremendous catch when he and Hiller both could have made the play much easier.
- 1:54:48Had the other one thought that he was the only fellow that could make the play.
- 1:54:52Larson gets that. Here's the one-one pitch. Ball, it's way up high with this one. Ball two and strike one.
- 1:55:01Well, the Yankees have picked up two here in the eighth inning. They lead five to two, still have a runner at second base with two outs.
- 1:55:10Larson delivers. He checked his swing, but he got the call strike by Al Bartek. That'll even account it two and two.
- 1:55:18The party struck out twice today and bounced to the second baseman.
- 1:55:25This ball game was tied 2-2 going into the seventh. Boyer's home run broke the tie and two more here in the eighth, adding to the Yankee lead.
- 1:55:33Here's the pitch. Ford takes it down low. Three and two to Whitey. Larson coming in with a low curve ball trying to get Ford to go fishing.
- 1:55:45Dale Long is down at second base with two outs. Don checks his runner. The pitch to Ford. Down low he walked him.
- 1:55:58Whitey Ford draws a base on ball. All the Yankees have runners at first and second with two outs and the batter will beat Cuba.
- 1:56:08The wind is starting to really make it be felt here as the flag starts to blow towards the right field corner.
- 1:56:16It becomes a factor now and the ball player is constantly checking those flags, especially in this ballpark.
- 1:56:25Cuback's had two hits and four trips. Stuck out in the first, fly to the left field in the fourth, singled in the second and the seventh inning.
- 1:56:36Don Larson gets set. Here's the pitch to Cuback. Ground ball hit hard to shortstop. For Gahn's going to go to first base with it. He's out.
- 1:56:45Cuback goes out short to first. Two runs on two hits in the inning. No errors, two in left and the score at the end of the first half of the eighth inning.
- 1:56:55The Yankees five and the Giants two. Well, Sepeta's had a great year for the Giants this year and Orlando's a real come through ball player.
- 1:57:03And he's also a man of convictions. Here's one of them. Since my first shape with the Super Blue Blade, I never even tried any other kind. You can't match that comfort.
- 1:57:13Yes, Super Blue Blades have brought new comfort and satisfaction to millions and millions of people. They're made by an exclusive Gillette process that's actually a scientific breakthrough.

- 1:58:02George, apparently, what he said something to manager Ralph Hough because that bullpen is up right now. Jim quotes the right hander and Bud Daly a left hander warming up. Justice the ending starts. Many times a picture will do that. He'll come in and he'll tell the manager.
- 1:58:16And managers appreciate that. They want the honest answer. They don't want to fill out there and try to be a hero because that's the wrong place to be a hero is on that mount. If you don't have it or you feel something coming on, managers would like to have that extra protection of knowing earlier.
- 1:58:31All you have to do is tell him something like my arm is tight enough to get somebody ready. And at the first sign of trouble, they can make that quick move.
- 1:58:39Whitey Ford is out there here in the eighth inning with the bullpen. Daly a left hander and Jim quotes a right hander warming up already.
- 1:58:47As Maize comes up there and he is hitting a ton against Whitey Ford.
- 1:58:51He's hitting 1,000. That's half a ton.
- 1:58:543-3. Willie Maize, the batter to lead off in the bottom of the eighth inning, Ford delivers. He swings and misses.
- 1:59:03Up the curve ball around the knees. It'll be Willie Maize, Orlando Sepeta and Jim Davenport for the Giants here in the eighth inning.
- 1:59:12The Yankees in front by a score of 5-2.
- 1:59:17Bud Daly a left hander and Jim quotes a right hander throwing in the bullpen. The pitch down low. One ball, one strike.
- 1:59:27Willie has scored one run and driven him one today.
- 1:59:33Here's the 1-1 pitch. Down low a change of pace. Ball two and strike one.
- 1:59:39Whitey is trying everything and that pitch he stepped towards third base and tried to break off a screw ball where his body was going one way and his arm the other.
- 1:59:48Willie just took it outside.
- 1:59:52Here's the 2-1 pitch. A swing and a miss. A bad curve ball breaking down and in. Willie was going for 2-2.
- 2:00:07He's taking a little time. He knows he's swung at a bad pitch and he's sort of taking a couple of pips around the batter's box before getting back in.
- 2:00:15You know sometimes when you have a fellow who's really wearing your pitcher out, it isn't a bad idea to just tell him what's coming, hoping that he doesn't believe you and just stand up and take a few pitches.
- 2:00:24You know I think we're on the same beam. I was just thinking Whitey's best luck might be just to throw it down the middle and say here it is.
- 2:00:30Just to holler from the mound, here comes a fastball. Willie and throw a fastball belt high and hope that he doesn't believe you.
- 2:00:36If I was playing third, do I want to know myself so I could play deep? Here it is. Strike 3 called. He got the fastball over and Willie is called out on strikes.
- 2:00:45Willie knew it. He just turned and walked away.
- 2:00:54Six strikeouts.
- 2:00:57Whitey 4 today. The batter is Orlando Cepeda.
- 2:01:03Orlando struck out in a second inning, bounced into a double play and he's popped a second.
- 2:01:08Takes one down low. One ball and a strike.
- 2:01:13George it's interesting to see this defense the Yankees have. They are really shading Cepeda towards the right field line.
- 2:01:20The pitch just swung on and fouled back. So it's one and one to Orlando.
- 2:01:25Following him all summer it was funny to see him on the road hit the ball from say center field over to the left field line but here at Candlestick he goes from center field to the right field line kind of laying back on his swing and these Yankees have him pretty well scouted.
- 2:01:41Whitey looking in. Here's the 1-1 pitch. Change of pace hit on the ground of the shortstop. Cepeda goes out, short to first.
- 2:01:53Whitey changed up on him, put Orlando out in front and he beat it in the dirt.
- 2:01:59That'll bring up Jim Davenport, the third baseman.
- 2:02:03Jimmy's had a single in two official trips and he walked back into fourth inning.
- 2:02:14Board delivers strike fastball at the knees.
- 2:02:20Two outs with no one on. We're in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Yankees five and the Giants two.
- 2:02:27Here's the pitch. Curve ball, he fouls it off.
- 2:02:30When going back into the lower deck, a strike two count.
- 2:02:40Whitey getting a new baseball from Al Barley takes a little time as he rubs it up.
- 2:02:49Yankees broke the time, the seventh inning with one run. Picked up two more in the eighth inning.
- 2:02:57Davenport waiting on Ford. Whitey taking a little time. Here's a two strike pitch.
- 2:03:04Down low, curving the dirt. One ball, two strikes.
- 2:03:12Coats and Dailey continue to throw in the bullpen. Here's the one two pitch.
- 2:03:20Change of pace, this one hit in front of the plate. Bounces into the middle of Elston Howard.
- 2:03:25Leaving the count at two and two.
- 2:03:28You think about that Howard, you think about that big bat, but he can handle that glove, George.
- 2:03:33He's one of the finest catchers in baseball, so there's no doubt about that.
- 2:03:38The Yankees have had great catchers for years. It's been a tradition over there.
- 2:03:43Look how many catchers Yogi sent to the minor leagues, and other ball clubs.
- 2:03:47Before that Bill Dickie sent a few to the minor leagues.
- 2:03:50I should have said so. You felt like that, boy, you want to pack up and say put another potato in the pot and mom will be home soon.
- 2:03:56There's a two two pitch. Line drive, it is foul. On the left field line.
- 2:04:00Still two and two to Davenport.
- 2:04:03Willie Mays opened the sending. He was called out on strikes. So paid a bounce to the shortstop for the second half.
- 2:04:10Jim Davenport the batter with a ball two and a strike two count.
- 2:04:14Ford into the wind up. Here it is. Inside.
- 2:04:19Three and two to Davenport.
- 2:04:23Ed Bailey is in the on-deck circle.
- 2:04:26The Giants trailing by three here in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:04:32Why'd he shaking off a sign from Elston Howard?
- 2:04:36That's what he likes. There's a three two pitch. Outside he walks in.
- 2:04:42Jim Davenport draws a base on ball. That's his second walk today.
- 2:04:46It's a runner at first base with two outs, and the batter will be Ed Bailey the catcher.
- 2:04:53Bailey has fouled a second fly to right and bounced to the shortstop in three trips.
- 2:05:01Day along the first baseman is going to play behind the runner at first base.
- 2:05:11They don't figure Davenport to be running. Three runs behind.
- 2:05:14Here's the pitch. A swing and a miss. Inside fastball. One strike to Bailey.
- 2:05:26Roger Maris very deep in right field. Man'll deep and around to the right and center field.
- 2:05:31Here's the pitch. Slow curve. He pops it up in the right field.
- 2:05:35Richardson going out. Maris coming in. Maybe trouble he makes the catch.
- 2:05:40Roger Maris on the run. Made a fine running catch.
- 2:05:44Now runs no hits. No errors. One man left. And the score at the end of eight.
- 2:05:48The Yankees five and the Giants two.
- 2:05:51Jim Colts has been warming up and Jim's a great experimenter on the field and off.
- 2:05:56A few days ago he told how he made out with one of them to Mal Allen in the clubhouse.
- 2:06:00Let's listen. Hey Jim that's a mighty smooth looking shave you got there.
- 2:06:04I was just trying out my new Gillette slim adjustable. Man that's the easiest shaving razor ever.
- 2:06:10Well easy shaving is right. The new Gillette slim adjustable razor is streamlined from head to handle.
- 2:06:16It's lighter for easier handling longer for better balance. Swimmer trimmer for those hard to reach shaving areas.
- 2:06:22And it's the first adjustable razor ever at the low low price of only a dollar fifty.
- 2:06:28Like all Gillette adjustables the new slim has nine different blade settings.
- 2:06:32A twist of the dial and you have the one that's just right for your skin and beard.
- 2:06:36With the razor you get a dispenser of remarkably keen double edged Gillette super blue blades.
- 2:06:42That gives all but incredible shaving comfort. You can get them both now on the Gillette World Series Special.
- 2:06:48Along with a seventy nine cent can of Gillette foaming cream of all instant lathers.
- 2:06:54It's a two twenty nine value for only a dollar ninety five. You save thirty four cents.
- 2:07:00It's a ninth inning here at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
- 2:07:04The Yankees are out in front by a score of five to two.
- 2:07:07Bobby Richardson will be the leadoff man. He'll be followed by Tom Trish and then Mickey Mantle.
- 2:07:22Don Larson big right hander pitching in relief of Billy O'Dell getting ready.
- 2:07:27The pitch strike. He got a fastball over.
- 2:07:31Richardson's had one hit in four trips today. That was a single back in the first inning.
- 2:07:37We'll see Trish and Mantle batting from the left side for the first time today.
- 2:07:42Here's the pitch. He swings and hits a high fly ball down the left field line.
- 2:07:47Keen coming over near the stands and makes the catch.
- 2:07:52Bobby Richardson out on a high fly ball to Harvey Keen down the left field line.
- 2:08:02That's one away and the batter will be Tom Trish.
- 2:08:08Tommy said one hit in four trips today. You'll be batting left handed for the first time.
- 2:08:19Larson came on relieving O'Dell in the eighth inning.
- 2:08:23Mickey Mantle waiting in the on-deck circle. Here's the pitch.
- 2:08:27Line drive that is in the center field just out of the reach of Pagan.
- 2:08:32Trish makes a big turn but he's going to hold on.
- 2:08:36Tommy hit that one on the end of the bat.
- 2:08:39A soft line drive just out of the reach of the shortstop Jose Pagan.
- 2:08:43So the Yankees have a runner at first place with one out and here's Mickey Mantle.
- 2:08:50Stu Miller a right-hander is throwing in the bullpen for the Giants.
- 2:08:56Mantle batting left-handed for the first time today.
- 2:09:01He's 0-3, walked back in the third inning. He struck out twice and fly deep to left field.
- 2:09:07Here's Al Dark bouncing out of the dugout.
- 2:09:11Larson has been looking at his hands, Joe. I don't know whether anything's wrong or not.
- 2:09:16Dark is going to talk to Bailey to see what the trouble might be.
- 2:09:23Now after a short conference with Barlich and Bailey at the plate,
- 2:09:27Dark is moving out to the mound to talk to Larson.
- 2:09:31One of the other catchers, Arsino, is coming in from the bullpen
- 2:09:34and Dark is going to make a move here with Stu Miller.
- 2:09:42Miller will come in to replace Larson. Bailey is going to the bench
- 2:09:46and while we make this change, we'll pause right now for our station identification.
- 2:09:50A-10 on your dial, WGY's Connected. It's amazing how a major league team can snap back fast when it's down.
- 2:09:57When you're feeling down, you too can snap right back with a cold sparkling refresher.
- 2:10:02Senator Kogadishis, instant pick-me-up tang. So tantalizing, it's delicious all by itself.
- 2:10:08I would imagine you can tell us a little bit about Stu Miller.
- 2:10:11Well, he's going to make a catching change too, George. Usually it's a knuckleball pitcher that they make a catching change.
- 2:10:16Right now Bob Neiman is out warming up Stu Miller.
- 2:10:20Stu is a change of speed pitcher and he's a fellow that's a master at.
- 2:10:27I have to grin because when you're bad against the Stu Miller, you keep telling yourself to wait
- 2:10:32and you do wait and you keep waiting and then you swing and realize that you should have waited some more.
- 2:10:38I guess one of the best ways to describe Stu Miller as far as the hitter is concerned is that he puts pressure on your shoestring.
- 2:10:45You can almost feel your body leave the shoes as you're leaning forward.
- 2:10:48He doesn't overpower you. He throws a slow curve ball, a straight change
- 2:10:54and when you get to looking for the slow stuff, he can get the fastball by you.
- 2:10:58Now, Arsino is coming in to catch you. Neiman was warming him up.
- 2:11:03Miller has been used strictly in relief by manager Alvin Dike.
- 2:11:08And there's so many things. I remember Walker Cooper one day with Larry Getz behind the plate.
- 2:11:13Stu Miller wound up and threw a slow curve ball and Big Coop was about five minutes in front as far as swinging
- 2:11:18and he turned around and Larry Getz and very seriously said, Larry, you better watch that fellow.
- 2:11:23I don't believe he just wound up and held that ball.
- 2:11:26It's about how far he can get you off stride.
- 2:11:29Gary Schumacher was a publicity man for the Giants says that this fellow has come up with a new pitch.
- 2:11:35Miller throws a Wells Fargo pitch he calls it. He says it comes up there in stages.
- 2:11:40The thing about him too, George, is that he's kind of a herky-jerky, gives you a lot of elbows, kneecaps and neck movement
- 2:11:47and throws you off stride.
- 2:11:49And then he goes down the middle. Miller gets set on the first pitch. He swings it, hits a long fly ball.
- 2:11:54If it stays fair, it's trouble in the corner it's fouled.
- 2:11:59Mickey Maddow driving one deep into the corner and right field.
- 2:12:03The wind is a factor right now. It's blowing from the left field corner across. It doesn't blow out.
- 2:12:09If you get it in the right center field slot, it'll blow it towards the line.
- 2:12:13If you get it down the line, it'll blow foul. You'll see a lot of them hit like that off Miller
- 2:12:17and it'll slow stuff and you'll zip one right by you.
- 2:12:21A one strike counter, Maddow.
- 2:12:23Arm's fresh at first base, one out here on the top of the night settings.
- 2:12:28Here's the pitch. A swing and a miss.
- 2:12:31That's ball by him. Two strikes to Mickey.
- 2:12:36A ball that Maddow hit, as Joe told you, was fair all the way and the wind sweeping across from the left field corner to right,
- 2:12:43carrying a ball in the foul territory.
- 2:12:48A two strike counter, Mickey Maddow.
- 2:12:50Mickey right down on the end of the bat.
- 2:12:54Miller gets set.
- 2:12:57Here it is. High fly ball into the shallow left field.
- 2:13:01There's Harvey Keene coming in. Boy, this one's a mile high. He's got it in left center field.
- 2:13:07Mickey Maddow out on a fly to Harvey Keene.
- 2:13:10Mickey got the first base and gave the bag a pretty good kicking.
- 2:13:15He's just to say he should have murdered that pitch.
- 2:13:18How do we got Roger Maris?
- 2:13:20Roger's had two hits and four trips. He doubled in the first inning, drove in two runs.
- 2:13:25He singled in the eighth and started a two run rally.
- 2:13:29So he's driven in two and scored one today.
- 2:13:38Stu Miller pitching in relief of Don Larson, who relieved Billy O'Dell in this ball game for the Giants.
- 2:13:47Here's the first pitch. A swing and a raise.
- 2:13:50There's a change of pace and he caught Maris way out in front.
- 2:13:55George's fellow will not only have you talking to yourself, but Miller will have you enjoying the conversation.
- 2:14:00You keep telling yourself you're going to wait, you're going to wait.
- 2:14:04And you just can't. You can just feel your body start to go forward. Great delivery.
- 2:14:09Roger Maris waiting on him.
- 2:14:13There's a quick throw to first. Trash gets back in time.
- 2:14:21Maris getting out of the box now.
- 2:14:24Trash at first base with two outs. The five to two ball game. The Yankees in front.
- 2:14:30Here's the pitch to Roger. Outside one ball, one strike.
- 2:14:36Looking to the bottom of the ninth inning, for Don will be the first batter for the Giants.
- 2:14:41Then I would imagine Orsino will be the second batter.
- 2:14:44We'll switch in the batting order as Orsino went in to catch and play to Bailey as Miller came in the pitch.
- 2:14:50Then Harvey Keane.
- 2:14:55Here's the one one pitch. Inside ball two and strike one to Maris.
- 2:15:02Richardson open the inning with a fly ball to Keane in left field.
- 2:15:06Tom Trash singled in the left center field.
- 2:15:09Mickey Mantle hit a high fly ball to Keane and shallow left field.
- 2:15:13Now it's a ball two and a strike one count to Roger Maris.
- 2:15:18Miller gets that. Here's the pitch. He swings and lines it foul down the first base line.
- 2:15:24That'll even the count at two and two to Rod.
- 2:15:32Game number two will be right here tomorrow afternoon.
- 2:15:37A couple of right handers will be the starting pitcher. Jack Sanford for the Giants.
- 2:15:42Ralph Perry for the Yankees.
- 2:15:48Senator Al Darts said more than likely Billy Pierce would open the series in Yankee Stadium on Sunday.
- 2:15:56Miller ready. Here's the two two pitch. There goes the runner. Here's the throw down the second base.
- 2:16:02A high throw in Trash estate.
- 2:16:05It'll be a stolen base for Tom Trash.
- 2:16:09I'll say one disadvantage you have is a catcher when you have a fellow can change speeds.
- 2:16:13There you throw. It was a slow curve ball and you could see our female trying to go out and get that ball.
- 2:16:18Trying to speed it along. Get it on the express but couldn't do it and Trash steals the big base.
- 2:16:28So Tommy Trash at second base with two outs. Roger Maris standing in with a ball two and a strike two count.
- 2:16:36Miller checks his runner. Here's the pitch down low.
- 2:16:43Roger Maris draws a walk. It was three and two instead of two and two. Maris on his way to first.
- 2:16:48Runners at first and second with two outs and the batter will be Elston Howard to catcher.
- 2:16:56He's taking a little time as he gets his shin guards off.
- 2:17:00So Maris at first base Trash at second. Two down and Elston Howard is at a single in two official trips today at a batter.
- 2:17:09Well he has walked once and he's been hit by a pitch ball.
- 2:17:16Miller comes to a set position delivers. Strike a slow curve over the outside corner.
- 2:17:24One strike to Elston Howard. Big strong right handed batter.
- 2:17:31The Yankees lead five to two. We're in the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:17:35Here's a ground ball hit the right field. It's in there. Trash around third coming in.
- 2:17:40A loose throw will go to second base and Trash comes in to score.
- 2:17:44Elston Howard reached out on a slow curve ball and slammed it hard just out of the reach of Hiller in the right field.
- 2:17:51A run batted in for Elston and the Yankees now lead six to two.
- 2:17:57He just made up his mind he was going to go the opposite field and he just widened his strike zone and punched one out there.
- 2:18:03The fellas that have the success against Miller those who were able to wait and go to the opposite field.
- 2:18:09Maris stops at second base. All the Yankees have runners at first and second with two outs and the batter is Dale Lawn.
- 2:18:16The field's been up one time he had a single and a run batted in and he ate the inning. A tap right back to the mound.
- 2:18:22Miller has it. So the first base and plenty of time to get Dale Lawn.
- 2:18:28The Yankees picked up one run in the inning on two hits.
- 2:18:31There were no errors. Two men left and the score at the end of the first half of the ninth inning. The Yankees six and the Giants two.
- 2:18:41Now the Yankees wins the Tour Dining for the San Francisco Giants and I tell you the way they went through this National League season.
- 2:18:46You've got to go back to that old baseball spade as the game's never over to the last man's out because if there was ever a ball club that's been counted out.
- 2:18:55It was these Giants not only counted out all season long but even in the playoffs as late as the eighth inning.
- 2:19:02They were counted out. He came back to score four big runs.
- 2:19:07a tough one out there in Whitey Ford.
- 2:19:09And once again, Ralph Hough has gone to his bullpen
- 2:19:12to get them up in a hurry.
- 2:19:14It's been a long inning for Ford.
- 2:19:17He's taken quick warm-up trusses.
- 2:19:20Uniform shows some perspiration,
- 2:19:23which is a bit unusual here at Candlestick
- 2:19:25because it's kind of a cool day.
- 2:19:27Seated on that bench in the shade,
- 2:19:29finest day warm, it could be a factor here.
- 2:19:31But Ford and I tell you, that's why,
- 2:19:34and George and I both talked about it,
- 2:19:36statistics don't mean a thing.
- 2:19:39When you come into a World Series,
- 2:19:41because here is Whitey Ford,
- 2:19:43where they talk about complete ball games
- 2:19:45during the season, he had seven of them.
- 2:19:48Now, you're saying to yourself,
- 2:19:49that's not a whole lot.
- 2:19:50And you compare it to a Terry, he's got 14,
- 2:19:53both of them tremendous pitchers.
- 2:19:54But when you go for that one tough ball game,
- 2:19:57here is Whitey Ford.
- 2:19:58And here he is in the bottom of the ninth inning,
- 2:20:01a four-run lead, and the bottom of the giant lineup
- 2:20:04coming up, Pagan, who has been on with base hits twice,
- 2:20:09Pagan and probably Arcino are a pinch hitter,
- 2:20:12depending on what Garth wants to do
- 2:20:13and then the top of the order.
- 2:20:15So it's the bottom of the ninth first game
- 2:20:17of the 1962 World Series,
- 2:20:19and George, do or die for the giant.
- 2:20:23Right, Joe, it's the bottom of the ninth inning,
- 2:20:25it'll be Jose Pagan to lead off.
- 2:20:29You'll be followed by the catcher, I believe, Arcino.
- 2:20:32We did not receive an announcement
- 2:20:33that Arcino was gonna bat number nine,
- 2:20:35but he has moved out of the dugout
- 2:20:38into the on-deck circle.
- 2:20:39When they made the pitching change in the ninth inning,
- 2:20:43the pitcher moved into the batting position of Ed Bailey,
- 2:20:46number seven in the lineup,
- 2:20:48and the catcher, Arcino, more than likely batting ninth.
- 2:20:51Here's Pagan, he's had two hits and three trips today.
- 2:20:55Whitey Ford ready, and the first pitch,
- 2:20:57ground ball hit wide a third, it's gonna last him.
- 2:21:00Jose Pagan gets his third hit, a ground ball,
- 2:21:06just out of the reach of warrior in the left field.
- 2:21:10All the giants have a runner at first place with no one out,
- 2:21:13and the batter will be John Arcino, the catcher.
- 2:21:18This will be his first time at bat today.
- 2:21:22Big, strong, right-handed batter.
- 2:21:24Action going on in the Yankee bullpen
- 2:21:27down the right field line.
- 2:21:28The pitch to Arcino,
- 2:21:30spiked, you get the curve ball over.
- 2:21:33Jim Coats a right-hander,
- 2:21:35and Bodd Daly a left-hander, throwing for New York.
- 2:21:41Here's the one-spike pitch, a swing of his.
- 2:21:45Spike too, to Arcino.
- 2:21:53They are long, playing behind the runner at first base.
- 2:21:56Everybody back on the infield.
- 2:22:00Yankees have now out-hipped the Giants 11 to 10.
- 2:22:04Here's the pitch.
- 2:22:06High-pop fly, this may be out of play.
- 2:22:08Howard coming over near the dugout, he can't get it.
- 2:22:11This one landing about five or six rows back into the crowd.
- 2:22:15The attendance here today, in case you missed it,
- 2:22:1743,852.
- 2:22:29Arcino going back to the dugout to get a new war club.
- 2:22:34Practice bat on that last one.
- 2:22:39Now you can hear the rhythmic applause of the fans,
- 2:22:41and they're still here.
- 2:22:43Very few have left the ballpark.
- 2:22:45They are rooting for the Giants to get something going.
- 2:22:51Board gets set. Here's the pitch.
- 2:22:53A swing and a foul, bouncing behind the plate.
- 2:22:56Two strikes.
- 2:22:57They've seen the Giants come from behind before.
- 2:22:59Yesterday in the all-important playoff game,
- 2:23:02down at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles,
- 2:23:04they were trailing by two in the ninth inning,
- 2:23:06and they picked up four runs.
- 2:23:10Today they trail by four here on the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:23:13Mighty Ford delivers.
- 2:23:15A ground ball hit the third base.
- 2:23:17Boyer goes to second. One out.
- 2:23:19Back to first to double play.
- 2:23:21Arcino hits into a fast double play.
- 2:23:24Boyer down to Richardson.
- 2:23:27Back today along.
- 2:23:30Oh, that's two down, and leave it up to Harvey Keane.
- 2:23:34Boyer made a good play.
- 2:23:36Went far to his left to get that ball.
- 2:23:38Had to get rid of it quickly to Richardson,
- 2:23:40who cooked the ball.
- 2:23:42Who cooked the throw and flipped it back to long.
- 2:23:47Harvey Keane is 0-4 in the ballgame.
- 2:23:53Ford ready. Here's the pitch.
- 2:23:56Down low. One ball and no strikes.
- 2:23:59Keane is struck out, bounce the third,
- 2:24:01and twice he has bounced back to the pitcher.
- 2:24:08Here's the one and 0 pitch.
- 2:24:10Strike, he got the fast ball over.
- 2:24:13One and one to Harvey Keane.
- 2:24:15We're in the last half of the night thinning.
- 2:24:17There's two outs with no one on. The Yankees lead, 62.
- 2:24:21The 1-1 pitch.
- 2:24:23He swings and hits a drive to center field.
- 2:24:25Mannell is going back. This should be the ballgame.
- 2:24:27He's got it. It's all over.
- 2:24:29Harvey Keane flies to center field.
- 2:24:31No runs in the ninth inning on one hit.
- 2:24:34There were no errors. No one left.
- 2:24:36Then the final score of the ballgame.
- 2:24:38The Yankees 6 and the Giants 2.
