- 0:29I Hate Talking: Welcome to episode 112 of I Hate Talking.
- 0:32I Hate Talking: Hi everyone.
- 0:33I Hate Talking: So before we get into this episode's word or phrase of the episode, we do have the results of our self survey from last episode on data versus data.
- 0:45I Hate Talking: So you did all the listening and tally marks, so why don't you share with our listeners the results.
- 0:55I Hate Talking: OK, so is it the results, what the word data versus data is, or which both of us said?
- 1:03I Hate Talking: Said in terms of the pronunciation because I think we talked a little bit about the data versus data last time where data is gonna be typically the more common and accepted pronunciation, but data is acceptable as well.
- 1:19I Hate Talking: So data with the lawn A was said.
- 1:26I Hate Talking: 59 times in last week's episode, 59.
- 1:33I Hate Talking: And that is.
- 1:35I Hate Talking: 50 times by you and 9 times by me.
- 1:41I Hate Talking: Well there you go, I guess I am more data oriented.
- 1:46I Hate Talking: And then data with the short A.
- 1:49I Hate Talking: We said 8 times.
- 1:53I Hate Talking: Once by you, and that was in the context of you talking about the difference in the two words.
- 2:01I Hate Talking: And 7 times by me.
- 2:05I Hate Talking: So I only use the word data or data.
- 2:09I Hate Talking: A total of 16 times total, and it was pretty, pretty even.
- 2:16I Hate Talking: I had 9 times data.
- 2:17I Hate Talking: 7 times data, you had 50 times data, 1 time data.
- 2:25I Hate Talking: Interesting.
- 2:26I Hate Talking: See, I would not have guessed that I would have strictly said data, but I guess I do, unless I'm referring to the less common and less preferred pronunciation data.
- 2:38I Hate Talking: I went back and forth fairly often and often when we listen to it, if y'all noticed, I don't know if you caught it or not.
- 2:46I Hate Talking: I would change it if I was using the word in the same sentence, I changed it.
- 2:51I Hate Talking: If I was talking about, I wonder what the data is on the data.
- 2:55I Hate Talking: It's how I would use that kind of phrase.
- 2:58I Hate Talking: So I would change the pronunciation if it was in the same sentence, or you did not, you'd be like, I wonder what the data of the data is.
- 3:07I Hate Talking: Interesting.
- 3:09I Hate Talking: Mhm.
- 3:09I Hate Talking: They're both nouns when you use them, data and data.
- 3:14I Hate Talking: Yeah, they're, I mean, we talked about it.
- 3:17I Hate Talking: It's the same word, you can use it either way, but I guess in my head, I would say it differently.
- 3:24I Hate Talking: To say like, I wonder what the data of the data is, so that way in my head they're two different things, two different categories.
- 3:33I Hate Talking: Gotcha.
- 3:34I Hate Talking: Very interesting.
- 3:36I Hate Talking: I still think I feel fancier when I say data.
- 3:39I Hate Talking: -- Data with the short -- A.
- 3:41I Hate Talking: Well, that's like the less formal use.
- 3:46I Hate Talking: That's what the internet says.
- 3:50I Hate Talking: Data is the more formal pronunciation, I suppose so.
- 3:55I Hate Talking: So if you have no idea what we're talking about, you can always go back and listen to our previous episode, episode 111, when we were talking about data centers and Brad Paisley and data centers.
- 4:07I Hate Talking: I never talked about data centers.
- 4:10I Hate Talking: But is it Brad Paisley or Brad Paisley?
- 4:15I Hate Talking: I've always heard Paisley.
- 4:17I Hate Talking: Yes, me too.
- 4:18I Hate Talking: -- Is it Brad or -- Braid?
- 4:21I Hate Talking: There you go.
- 4:22I Hate Talking: So The word or phrase of this episode is actually an acronym.
- 4:32I Hate Talking: So This one I was aware of, I saw this in like one of those like, did you know, fact emails that I get that I enjoy reading occasionally that I am purposely subscribed to.
- 4:46I Hate Talking: OK, and this one was words that were originally acronyms.
- 4:52I Hate Talking: So do you know any words that were originally acronyms?
- 4:54I Hate Talking: There's one that's, I think, relatively famous and this article included that, but there were some other ones that I was not aware of, so I was pleasantly surprised to learn of some new ones.
- 5:06I Hate Talking: OK.
- 5:07I Hate Talking: That are like legitimate words now or just so commonly used that we think they're words.
- 5:14I Hate Talking: I'd probably say the latter.
- 5:17I Hate Talking: They're so commonly used that they're just used as words and probably maybe A lot of people, maybe even the majority of people do not know that they were originally acronyms.
- 5:27I Hate Talking: OK, I don't know why this word popped in my head cause I haven't said it in Almost, you know, over 20 years, the word avid comes to mind.
- 5:40I Hate Talking: A, avid, I'm joking.
- 5:44I Hate Talking: Avid.
- 5:45I Hate Talking: No, avid would be like.
- 5:47I Hate Talking: Not an acronym.
- 5:49I Hate Talking: It's like advance something something.
- 5:51I Hate Talking: I don't even know what it stands for.
- 5:52I Hate Talking: It does stand for something though.
- 5:54I Hate Talking: I used it in high school.
- 5:56I Hate Talking: I was in that program, and I don't know why that's the first thing that popped in my head.
- 6:00I Hate Talking: But it's an acronym.
- 6:03I Hate Talking: I do not know what it stands for.
- 6:06I Hate Talking: So it's an adjective, according to Duck duck go, it is defined as having or marked by keen interest or enthusiasm, and that is from our favorite American Heritage Dictionary.
- 6:23I Hate Talking: Well, the school program.
- 6:25I Hate Talking: Well, if there is a school program.
- 6:27I Hate Talking: Then I suppose that it could be.
- 6:31I Hate Talking: Something that is like a play on words that they're using the actual word avid and ascribing words to that to be an acronym.
- 6:41I Hate Talking: Advanced via individual determination.
- 6:44I Hate Talking: Via it's a in-school program that helps students in advanced middle build the skills for rigorous course and graduate programs, AVID advancement via individual determination.
- 7:04I Hate Talking: OK, -- so -- it's a school program that helps, yeah, you get into higher education, right, so that is a word avid that started as a word from the etymology Latin avidus, which means longing eagerly.
- 7:23I Hate Talking: desirous or greedy, and then Came to be used in the French as a vir to desire eagerly.
- 7:31I Hate Talking: And then was, I suppose, co-opted by this school program and they ascribed other words to fit the word and that becomes sort of an acrostic.
- 7:44I Hate Talking: So, OK, so that's an acrostic.
- 7:47I Hate Talking: And you're talking about what?
- 7:50I Hate Talking: A word Used today as a word that originally was an acronym.
- 7:59I Hate Talking: What's the difference between an acronym and acrostic?
- 8:02I Hate Talking: So acrostic would be an existing word to which you put other words that are in the same sequence of letters as the original word.
- 8:13I Hate Talking: So that would be an example of the avid in the school program, advanced via individual development.
- 8:19I Hate Talking: -- Determination -- determination.
- 8:22I Hate Talking: I was thinking of IDP's individual development plan.
- 8:27I Hate Talking: Nonetheless, so that would be an acrostic, an existing word.
- 8:31I Hate Talking: Other words associated to that word in the order of the letters, whereas an acronym will be A sequence of words that then you use the Shortened form or just one letter from each word to combine those into a new phrase or single word.
- 8:51I Hate Talking: OK, I see the difference.
- 8:54I Hate Talking: I'm coming up with a 0.
- 8:57I Hate Talking: Examples So I think the first time that I learned about this was at a summer camp when I was a young child.
- 9:06I Hate Talking: Wow, we're pulling back from high school.
- 9:09I Hate Talking: No, this would have been before high school.
- 9:11I Hate Talking: This would have been middle school of some time.
- 9:14I Hate Talking: And there was another child that I think shared a Love of language and etymology and was Sort of showing off his skills when he was talking about the word scuba.
- 9:28I Hate Talking: And that that is not really a word.
- 9:30I Hate Talking: It is a Acronym That became used as a word and is now so frequently used that people probably think it is exclusively a word.
- 9:39I Hate Talking: And you were very impressed by that.
- 9:41I Hate Talking: I was very impressed.
- 9:42I Hate Talking: So scuba, yes, I have heard that the word scuba isn't a real word, right?
- 9:49I Hate Talking: -- Even though we -- use it.
- 9:51I Hate Talking: I mean, now it's essentially a real word, yes, but that is not how it was originally derived.
- 9:56I Hate Talking: -- And -- what does it stand for?
- 9:58I Hate Talking: Self-contained underwater breathing apparatus.
- 10:01I Hate Talking: OK.
- 10:04I Hate Talking: So, most people call it scuba gear, which is actually not really all that correct cause you don't really need gear in the end of that because it already is an apparatus.
- 10:16I Hate Talking: So it's like self-contained underwater breathing apparatus gear.
- 10:18I Hate Talking: Right, yeah.
- 10:20I Hate Talking: But because it's become a term, like when you say I go scuba, you, everyone knows what you mean.
- 10:27I Hate Talking: I think so.
- 10:29I Hate Talking: Right, so I mean it's the same thing, right?
- 10:31I Hate Talking: Like a sub, I guess, right?
- 10:32I Hate Talking: That'd be a shortened form of submarine, so not quite an -- acronym -- per se.
- 10:38I Hate Talking: No, isn't substand for like submersible?
- 10:42I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 10:43I Hate Talking: Now I'm just thinking about the Titanic submersible.
- 10:47I Hate Talking: I was so into that when that happened a couple of years ago, remember?
- 10:50I Hate Talking: I was giving you like hourly updates.
- 10:53I Hate Talking: And what was happening.
- 10:55I Hate Talking: No, it's like submersible.
- 10:58I Hate Talking: Am I wrong?
- 11:02I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 11:03I Hate Talking: Well, we'll check your sub.
- 11:05I Hate Talking: Underwater worship.
- 11:07I Hate Talking: Yes, I'm wrong.
- 11:09I Hate Talking: So I mean it's a submersible warship, but That comes from submarine.
- 11:15I Hate Talking: Oh, OK.
- 11:16I Hate Talking: So scuba, what are some other examples of your Well, another one that is incorrectly used with a acronym followed by another word would be PIN number.
- 11:28I Hate Talking: Because PIN is another acronym, quote unquote word.
- 11:33I Hate Talking: What's it stand for?
- 11:34I Hate Talking: Personal identification number.
- 11:36I Hate Talking: -- So you say personal -- identification number number.
- 11:40I Hate Talking: Yes, that's what you're saying when you say PIN number.
- 11:42I Hate Talking: That's getting more popular.
- 11:43I Hate Talking: I feel like almost everything nowadays wants a PIN number.
- 11:46I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 11:49I Hate Talking: Do they?
- 11:50I Hate Talking: No, I mean, do, I will have to pay attention to this.
- 11:54I Hate Talking: This happened when like an actual business or like formal request for actually asked for a PIN number and not just a PIN.
- 12:03I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 12:05I Hate Talking: Y'all, let us know too when you see it.
- 12:08I Hate Talking: It's much more common.
- 12:09I Hate Talking: Almost every time I sign into anything now, it's asking for, I'd say a PIN number.
- 12:15I Hate Talking: Maybe not.
- 12:16I Hate Talking: It was just the pin.
- 12:18I Hate Talking: -- It might be just the -- pin.
- 12:20I Hate Talking: So what would happen?
- 12:21I Hate Talking: Why does my brain add the word number on there?
- 12:25I Hate Talking: Well, I think so many people just use that so frequently that it's become sort of normal phraseology to just say pin number.
- 12:32I Hate Talking: Mm.
- 12:33I Hate Talking: And maybe it's a of the fact that nobody uses PIN as personal identification number when they say that they just think.
- 12:42I Hate Talking: In and then like as a way of flagging that they're expecting a number or response is that it's pin number so that people actually have a little bit more clarity even though it's sort of nonsensical to say.
- 12:55I Hate Talking: PIN number.
- 12:57I Hate Talking: Right, cause anything else you right, you don't say like, give me your code number or give me your password number.
- 13:03I Hate Talking: Would you say, give me the code?
- 13:05I Hate Talking: And then you'd give them, yeah, you don't ask for what's your password word, right?
- 13:11I Hate Talking: So I always say PIN number.
- 13:13I Hate Talking: Just because it's such a short word, it sounds incomplete, just say give me your PIN.
- 13:19I Hate Talking: I guess where people just don't know what PIN stands for, and they think that it's like a special thing and then since it's numerical in nature, they add the word number on the end.
- 13:30I Hate Talking: -- This is -- probably something in 10 years, everyone will say so often that when we say pin number, we're like, showing our age.
- 13:39I Hate Talking: It's like people when they're like the Facebook.
- 13:41I Hate Talking: I checked the Facebook.
- 13:43I Hate Talking: Which is technically right, but you're like, you don't call it the Facebook, you don't call it the Instagram.
- 13:50I Hate Talking: I checked Instagram.
- 13:52I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 13:53I Hate Talking: Yeah, or click on the floppy disk to save your document.
- 13:57I Hate Talking: Yeah, which people don't even call it that anymore, it's a save icon, cause it's just been so ubiquitously associated with saving a document.
- 14:07I Hate Talking: Right, I mean, the kids know what it is, they know that's the save button, but they don't understand where that symbol comes from.
- 14:14I Hate Talking: Correct.
- 14:15I Hate Talking: Yeah.
- 14:16I Hate Talking: So then another one that I was aware of in the past, but had to check what it actually meant is laser.
- 14:22I Hate Talking: So that stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.
- 14:28I Hate Talking: Oh, That's not good.
- 14:31I Hate Talking: So laser is not a word originally, it's an acronym.
- 14:35I Hate Talking: -- Do -- all lasers have radiation?
- 14:38I Hate Talking: Well, yeah, in terms of like light radiation, the sun has radiation.
- 14:43I Hate Talking: That's how you get sunburned.
- 14:44I Hate Talking: OK, but not like microwavable, right?
- 14:49I Hate Talking: No, they're not microwaves, they're.
- 14:51I Hate Talking: Light waves.
- 14:52I Hate Talking: -- I -- don't know.
- 14:53I Hate Talking: You're not like supposed to shine those little red lights that you play with cats and stuff.
- 14:59I Hate Talking: Well, you're not supposed to shine a laser in your eye.
- 15:01I Hate Talking: That's because it is radiation in the form of wavelengths of light.
- 15:05I Hate Talking: Yes, highly focused synchronized light amplified by stimulated emission of radiation.
- 15:11I Hate Talking: OK, what's raser stand for again?
- 15:13I Hate Talking: What is what?
- 15:15I Hate Talking: -- Raise laser stand -- for?
- 15:18I Hate Talking: Laser is light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.
- 15:23I Hate Talking: What's razor stand for?
- 15:25I Hate Talking: Razor, like the razor that you use for Cutting open a box.
- 15:31I Hate Talking: Yeah, does that stand for something?
- 15:33I Hate Talking: I feel like it should.
- 15:33I Hate Talking: No, that's just a word.
- 15:35I Hate Talking: Are you sure?
- 15:36I Hate Talking: We can check, but -- I'm 99% certain laser -- stands -- for -- something.
- 15:40I Hate Talking: Well, -- it's -- not even spelled the same.
- 15:42I Hate Talking: It's not even spelled the same though.
- 15:43I Hate Talking: They sure sound alike.
- 15:45I Hate Talking: The word razor originates from the Middle English term razor, which comes from the Old French razor, meaning a razor.
- 15:53I Hate Talking: Yeah, OK, never mind.
- 15:56I Hate Talking: Comes from the Latin radi, meaning to scrape or shave.
- 15:59I Hate Talking: OK, that makes sense, but.
- 16:02I Hate Talking: They sound like it should be one of those acronyms.
- 16:06I Hate Talking: So what are some other acronyms, you know?
- 16:07I Hate Talking: So scuba, laser.
- 16:11I Hate Talking: So scuba, laser and pin we've talked about.
- 16:15I Hate Talking: The word radar.
- 16:19I Hate Talking: is also an acronym, radio detection and ranging.
- 16:24I Hate Talking: Do these become words in the dictionary because I use them so frequently?
- 16:29I Hate Talking: Yes, all these are in the dictionary so far.
- 16:33I Hate Talking: So they used to be acronyms, but now they're actual words.
- 16:37I Hate Talking: Yep.
- 16:37I Hate Talking: Hmm.
- 16:38I Hate Talking: So that one I was aware of, again, would have had to look up the exact words that were used to make up that particular acronym.
- 16:46I Hate Talking: Now, this one's interesting, do you say GIF or GIF?
- 16:50I Hate Talking: Oh, no.
- 16:53I Hate Talking: I have to use it in a sentence.
- 16:55I Hate Talking: This file Jeff.
- 16:59I Hate Talking: Yep, that's incorrect.
- 17:02I Hate Talking: And there's a probably a debate on this, so you, our listeners can let us know if you disagree with my correct answer, but this is because it is not a word, it is an acronym and it stands for graphics interchange format.
- 17:15I Hate Talking: So the guy, the creator calls it a GIF, right?
- 17:19I Hate Talking: See, I also disagree with this because there actually is a file type called JIFF, which would be pronounced GIF.
- 17:25I Hate Talking: So there's actually would be some confusion if you're talking about a GIF or a GIF because there is a JIFF.
- 17:33I Hate Talking: But the creator said it, right?
- 17:36I Hate Talking: There's a whole thing about he stood on a stage and said it is pronounced Jeff.
- 17:40I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 17:42I Hate Talking: I don't know this story.
- 17:43I Hate Talking: We'll have to do some more research on it.
- 17:44I Hate Talking: OK, look it up.
- 17:44I Hate Talking: So then how would you say JIFF as a file extension?
- 17:50I Hate Talking: I think that's just what you call it.
- 17:54I Hate Talking: No, that's a different extension, different file type.
- 17:57I Hate Talking: GIF, and then you need a GIF for the GIF.
- 18:02I Hate Talking: The creator of the format says it's pronounced with a soft G as in GIF.
- 18:09I Hate Talking: However, public opinion is heavily divided.
- 18:13I Hate Talking: The vast majority would pronounce it with a hard G.
- 18:17I Hate Talking: Yes Because it stands for graphic.
- 18:21I Hate Talking: See, I've heard, I, he stood on the stage, like a big stage a long time ago, and said it's pronounced Jeff.
- 18:29I Hate Talking: That's why when I paused for a second thinking of how to say it, I remembered his like TED Talk type thing.
- 18:36I Hate Talking: So what, how does he address the JIF and JIFF file extensions then?
- 18:42I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 18:43I Hate Talking: Maybe it came after that TED Talk, who knows?
- 18:48I Hate Talking: So then this one I think is probably still more considered an acronym, FOMO.
- 18:56I Hate Talking: Have you heard that used as like a word?
- 18:59I Hate Talking: Yeah, FOMO.
- 19:00I Hate Talking: But it's, I've always, right, but that one I think is like more recent and recent enough that people still know that it's an acronym.
- 19:09I Hate Talking: Oh, I use that phrase.
- 19:11I Hate Talking: I used it on your sister a while back.
- 19:12I Hate Talking: She saw an amazing view of the northern lights.
- 19:17I Hate Talking: I remember telling her, man, I had so much FOMO when I saw that cause I love the northern lights, and we've seen a little bit in the past.
- 19:26I Hate Talking: But it's still my dream to actually see like a full spectacular view of it.
- 19:31I Hate Talking: And she saw a good one.
- 19:33I Hate Talking: So I remember that was the last time I legitimately used the word FOMO.
- 19:37I Hate Talking: Right, but you knew that it's an acronym, and I think most people when they use that quote unquote word that they know it's an acronym, right?
- 19:46I Hate Talking: YOLO, you only live once.
- 19:48I Hate Talking: That was another one I used today.
- 19:50I Hate Talking: -- There -- you go.
- 19:51I Hate Talking: See, but that one's still like acronym, so it'd be interesting to see if those Particular acronym word things stick around for another generation and then just people start using them as words and don't even realize that they were acronyms in the past.
- 20:05I Hate Talking: Well, one our kids use fairly often is lol.
- 20:10I Hate Talking: See, but I laugh out loud.
- 20:14I Hate Talking: I think that still, I don't know if they know it means laugh out loud, right?
- 20:18I Hate Talking: It's possible, -- I -- suppose.
- 20:19I Hate Talking: I told them like that means you guys, it's LOL laugh out loud, like lol.
- 20:25I Hate Talking: So I don't know, maybe they know it means laugh out loud, but they would argue that it doesn't mean LOL.
- 20:34I Hate Talking: Like I'd call it LOL, right.
- 20:36I Hate Talking: No, they say lol.
- 20:38I Hate Talking: Interesting.
- 20:39I Hate Talking: I have heard that before, but.
- 20:41I Hate Talking: Maybe that's another one that Has been used so frequently in the younger generations that they don't even realize that it was an acronym.
- 20:49I Hate Talking: And then the final one on the list that I did not know was an acronym, nor did I know what words comprised it, is taser.
- 21:00I Hate Talking: OK, let me try to guess.
- 21:02I Hate Talking: -- You'll never -- guess.
- 21:04I Hate Talking: Well, I'm on a roll tonight, getting everything right, so here we go, taser.
- 21:13I Hate Talking: Time Associated.
- 21:18I Hate Talking: Stops I wanna say aggression, but that's not how you spell a good taser.
- 21:25I Hate Talking: Time associated stops eager riots.
- 21:31I Hate Talking: OK, that's that I'm locking that in.
- 21:35I Hate Talking: That's my answer.
- 21:36I Hate Talking: OK, so you are a listener, think briefly on what you think the word taser is, what acronym.
- 21:43I Hate Talking: that it was generated from and using which words.
- 21:48I Hate Talking: We'll give you a second, cause you'll never guess, unless you know this, like it's not something that anyone would ever guess, I don't think.
- 21:56I Hate Talking: I hear that Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
- 21:59I Hate Talking: The music, the theme music, yeah, there you go.
- 22:02I Hate Talking: Well, perhaps you can phone a friend.
- 22:05I Hate Talking: Maybe there's somebody that read a lot of books when they were younger, because taser stands for Thomas A.
- 22:14I Hate Talking: Swift Electric rifle.
- 22:16I Hate Talking: Oh, I was off, -- a little bit -- off, a little bit.
- 22:20I Hate Talking: Right.
- 22:21I Hate Talking: And the interesting thing about that is that Thomas A.
- 22:24I Hate Talking: Swift is not even a real person.
- 22:25I Hate Talking: And why is it named after him?
- 22:28I Hate Talking: Because he's the guy that all those books that were sort of in the same time period of Hardy Boys were written, was like the inventor.
- 22:36I Hate Talking: Extraordinaire.
- 22:38I Hate Talking: He would invent things and go on various adventures and things like that.
- 22:42I Hate Talking: Not in the Hardy Boy books, but in the same time period associated with sort of when those Hardy Boy books were.
- 22:50I Hate Talking: Written, they were, I think, bound in very similar fashion, very similar typography and things like that.
- 22:56I Hate Talking: Thomas Swift, Tom Swift, yeah.
- 22:58I Hate Talking: You don't know Tom Swift?
- 23:00I Hate Talking: I read Nancy Drew and the Bobbsey Twins.
- 23:04I Hate Talking: I didn't read Hardy Boy.
- 23:07I Hate Talking: We've tried to get our kids into it.
- 23:09I Hate Talking: They're not into the older ones, but.
- 23:12I Hate Talking: Uh, the Dollar Tree.
- 23:15I Hate Talking: Has A lot of Hardy Boy books for $1 or what's like $1.25 now or whatnot, but they're all modern, the kids enjoy those ones, because they're like playing baseball or video games or whatnot.
- 23:32I Hate Talking: But I can't get them into the original Hardy Boys.
- 23:38I Hate Talking: But maybe they'd like Thomas A.
- 23:41I Hate Talking: Swift.
- 23:42I Hate Talking: Oops, I doubt it though.
- 23:43I Hate Talking: Yep, or just Tom Swift.
- 23:45I Hate Talking: Apparently it was a TV show.
- 23:47I Hate Talking: Apparently they are.
- 23:48I Hate Talking: Trying to start up the series again as of 2019 with a Tom Swift Junior.
- 23:55I Hate Talking: So, -- but -- they're in the same format as Hardy Boys.
- 24:00I Hate Talking: Yeah, like if you picked up A Tom Swift book or Hardy Boy book, you I could tell the difference, but they're like the same size and shape, same binding, same sort of artwork and things like that that a Hardy Boys book would have.
- 24:15I Hate Talking: I wouldn't even notice.
- 24:16I Hate Talking: I'd look at that and think of Hardy Boys.
- 24:18I Hate Talking: Did you read them?
- 24:20I Hate Talking: Yeah, they were good.
- 24:21I Hate Talking: -- Did you read Hardy -- Boys?
- 24:22I Hate Talking: I read Hardy Boys.
- 24:23I Hate Talking: Did you read Nancy Drew?
- 24:25I Hate Talking: I was forced to.
- 24:26I Hate Talking: Did you read Bobbsey Twins?
- 24:28I Hate Talking: No, I didn't do Bobby Twins.
- 24:30I Hate Talking: I think my sister did Bobbsey Twins.
- 24:31I Hate Talking: Perhaps.
- 24:31I Hate Talking: That was my favorite.
- 24:32I Hate Talking: Indeed, I remember Tom Swift being sort of like a fun read, but it wasn't sort of like mysterious or anything.
- 24:39I Hate Talking: So I think I slightly preferred Hardy Boys because there's an element of mystery to it.
- 24:45I Hate Talking: Whereas like Tom Swift was like just building things and going on adventures.
- 24:49I Hate Talking: There wasn't really a lot of Intrigue in those particular stories.
- 24:53I Hate Talking: OK.
- 24:54I Hate Talking: So that is Taser is basically the Because he created a taser in his story.
- 25:05I Hate Talking: No, the guy that created the taser, I guess maybe was inspired by Tom Swift and named it after this fictional character.
- 25:11I Hate Talking: Wow, he really liked those books that much.
- 25:16I Hate Talking: I'm guessing here.
- 25:16I Hate Talking: I, I didn't actually check this.
- 25:18I Hate Talking: -- Let's -- find That's a real hardcore fan right there.
- 25:22I Hate Talking: The term was first created during the development of the first taser by inventor Jack Cover, and he basically named it after the fictional Tom Swift character of the books.
- 25:37I Hate Talking: But no reason why.
- 25:40I Hate Talking: He said it was inspired by the character from the series of the early 20th century adventure novels written by Victor Appleton, which I think was also a pen name, not the actual guy's name, similar to Tom Swift, a name named Victor Appleton.
- 25:54I Hate Talking: I see that one's made up though.
- 25:56I Hate Talking: I'm pretty sure that's a pen name.
- 25:58I Hate Talking: I like that one though.
- 26:00I Hate Talking: Like, uh, what's the other, other one that's a famous pen name.
- 26:04I Hate Talking: Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn.
- 26:07I Hate Talking: This is the guy that wrote this.
- 26:10I Hate Talking: -- I'm -- looking -- at -- you.
- 26:12I Hate Talking: Oh my goodness.
- 26:13I Hate Talking: Am I gonna have to Google this?
- 26:16I Hate Talking: Why did I not know?
- 26:18I Hate Talking: Mark Twain Mark Twain, right, -- that's -- not his real name.
- 26:24I Hate Talking: That's not his real name.
- 26:25I Hate Talking: It's like something Clement Clement or something, something Clement.
- 26:29I Hate Talking: Um, must be getting tired or old.
- 26:34I Hate Talking: I'm not remembering this.
- 26:36I Hate Talking: I think it's both.
- 26:38I Hate Talking: It's both, probably so.
- 26:41I Hate Talking: His real name Mark Twain, Samuel Langhorne Clemens.
- 26:48I Hate Talking: So there you go.
- 26:49I Hate Talking: It's on the right track.
- 26:50I Hate Talking: So, those are some interesting words that have come about because of acronyms and now are so frequently used as words that maybe some people don't even know they were originally acronyms.
- 27:04I Hate Talking: Interesting.
- 27:06I Hate Talking: And who knows, maybe this is what Generated words in the past and we don't even know it.
- 27:12I Hate Talking: Podcast, right?
- 27:13I Hate Talking: A podcast isn't even a real word, right?
- 27:15I Hate Talking: Do you know what podcast stands for?
- 27:18I Hate Talking: It's casting to your iPod.
- 27:22I Hate Talking: It's a form of audio entertainment that you can use on your iPod.
- 27:28I Hate Talking: Huh?
- 27:30I Hate Talking: Well, how would it not be right?
- 27:32I Hate Talking: That's how pod came about is because Apple invented it.
- 27:35I Hate Talking: It was as part of the iPod.
- 27:36I Hate Talking: Right, iPod wasn't a thing.
- 27:38I Hate Talking: It was like a name.
- 27:39I Hate Talking: iPod.
- 27:41I Hate Talking: iPad iPhone.
- 27:43I Hate Talking: They don't like iWatch.
- 27:45I Hate Talking: You're not supposed to call it that.
- 27:47I Hate Talking: -- It's just -- watch.
- 27:48I Hate Talking: Why?
- 27:48I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 27:49I Hate Talking: Apple Watch.
- 27:51I Hate Talking: Apple Watch.
- 27:52I Hate Talking: They don't, they don't call it the iWatch.
- 27:54I Hate Talking: They were very specific on that.
- 27:57I Hate Talking: It's true, you don't call it an Apple phone.
- 27:58I Hate Talking: It's an iPhone, iPod, iPad.
- 28:02I Hate Talking: iMac, but not an iWatch.
- 28:05I Hate Talking: I have no idea why.
- 28:07I Hate Talking: It's just a thing.
- 28:08I Hate Talking: I'm sure it was a very specific decision by Apple watch.
- 28:12I Hate Talking: No, I think he probably didn't want to call it iWatch.
- 28:17I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 28:19I Hate Talking: I'm not sure the reasoning.
- 28:20I Hate Talking: Well, that'll be a future.
- 28:22I Hate Talking: Deep dive.
- 28:23I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 28:25I Hate Talking: What are you checking on?
- 28:27I Hate Talking: The words iPod and broadcast.
- 28:31I Hate Talking: So our podcast is a digital digital audio show.
- 28:37I Hate Talking: That you can download and stream over the internet.
- 28:41I Hate Talking: So pod comes from Apple's famous iPod, and cast comes from broadcast.
- 28:47I Hate Talking: I put right, that counts or does it not?
- 28:51I Hate Talking: Well, -- it's not -- an acronym per se.
- 28:52I Hate Talking: It's a A different thing that's happening to words that are mashed together and combined into new phrases.
- 29:00I Hate Talking: Which there's a word for that too, but we'll have to revisit that too.
- 29:05I Hate Talking: We have talked about that in previous episodes.
- 29:06I Hate Talking: I have no idea where, but.
- 29:07I Hate Talking: We have.
- 29:10I Hate Talking: All right, we'll look that up and we'll -- talk about that in the future -- too.
- 29:14I Hate Talking: Well, there you go.
- 29:15I Hate Talking: So if you know what it is called when two words become mashed together and reordered a bit to become a new word, or if you know the reason why the Apple Watch is not called the iWatch, you can always leave a comment, send us a text, send us an email.
- 29:34I Hate Talking: And perhaps share this episode with just one other person, and they can try to Come to a conclusion on any of these things that we've discussed or be informed about acronyms.
- 29:45I Hate Talking: Yeah, I, you know you're saying it in my head, I'm like, I wanna talk to somebody and sincerely say something about my iWatch and see their reaction.
- 29:56I Hate Talking: That sounds so off, that I feel like they would do a double take.
- 30:02I Hate Talking: I was like, oh, my iWatch is really.
- 30:04I Hate Talking: Uh, acting up today.
- 30:07I Hate Talking: I just, I feel like that's not a phrase I'd hear, but I'd never blink twice if someone said my iPhone.
- 30:14I Hate Talking: Precisely.
