Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The Ego-Viewpoint Provides Limited and Inaccurate Assessments of Events
Transcript
- 0:00If we review our lives through the lens of history, that is,
- 0:05looking back over the events of our lives from where we are
- 0:08today, we can see that things we thought at the time were
- 0:12positive things were in some cases highly detrimental to us
- 0:17over time. And similarly, things we found
- 0:21distasteful or bad may turn out to have been very positive from
- 0:26this view. On the same token, we try to
- 0:30judge economic, political, sociological events in the world
- 0:35we live in based on our immediate impressions.
- 0:39But using the lens of history review, we frequently find that
- 0:44things turned out badly in some cases that we thought were
- 0:47positive and turned out positively in cases we were
- 0:51deeply concerned about. These things illustrate for us
- 0:56that trying to judge anything based on our narrow focus from
- 1:00the standpoint of the ego, whether it is the individual ego
- 1:05or the larger framed societal ego that we adopt with our
- 1:09religion, our politics, our country, etcetera, is bound to
- 1:14lead us to inaccurate and incomplete conclusions.
- 1:19Another aspect to be considered is that the things we believe
- 1:23are positive chances for us are in many cases at the expense of
- 1:28others and thus in balance lead to more suffering than joy and
- 1:33eventually can turn our own joy into sorrow.
- 1:37For instance, we enjoy many of the amenities of our modern
- 1:41lives, air conditioning, Internet, mobile phones,
- 1:45etcetera, without considering the cost these things have both
- 1:49in terms of resource utilization and waste by products, but also
- 1:54in many cases on the long term quality of life we lead.
- 1:59We also failed generally to take into account opportunity cost.
- 2:05Choosing one line of development collapses numerous other
- 2:08potential lines of development. We cannot, from our ego
- 2:12standpoint, know in advance which one would actually turn
- 2:16out best for our growth and development over the longer
- 2:20term. Quantum mechanics takes up this
- 2:23very question about the numerous, if not indeed infinite
- 2:27choices available as latent possibilities and how they all
- 2:32shrink down once an actual choice is made.
- 2:36That does not imply we have made the best choice, simply that we
- 2:40have moved in a particular direction and put aside other
- 2:45options. A disciple inquires.
- 2:48Quote. A happy chance may come from a
- 2:51set of circumstances which harm nobody.
- 2:54End Quote. The mother writes.
- 2:58Quote. We do not see if harming anyone
- 3:02or anything simply because we do not have sufficient data.
- 3:07We cannot judge circumstances, for we do not know the world.
- 3:13What do we know about it? Our vision is so short and so
- 3:17limited. Just think, a man can never know
- 3:20what lies beyond his 120 years at the maximum.
- 3:24And I am putting a very big limit, and I count the first
- 3:28years of his existence, though generally he does not remember
- 3:31what has happened. Then what does one know about
- 3:34the world in so short a time and about the consequences of
- 3:38things? Nothing at all, and even
- 3:41granting that one can remember sufficiently well to know the
- 3:45result or antecedent of a so-called chance, it is
- 3:50altogether a local knowledge. What does one know about what is
- 3:54happening at the antipodes or in a million other places on the
- 3:58earth at the same moment? We know nothing about it, and as
- 4:03we know that all that happens is linked, that all things are
- 4:08closely linked consciously, that there cannot be a vibration in
- 4:13one place without there being its consequences in another, how
- 4:18can we tell whether our chance is not harmful to someone though
- 4:23it be favorable to us? I think it is impossible to form
- 4:28a judgment. How shall I put it, a correct
- 4:32judgment about things, For one does not know what is going on
- 4:36in the world. We do not know the whole, we
- 4:41know nothing of the play of forces, and we say that chance
- 4:45is the result of a play of forces.
- 4:48Only instead of being the expression of divine harmony, it
- 4:52is the expression of conflicting wills.
- 4:55These wills are not all necessarily bad or hostile, but
- 4:59they are always ignorant. Each one tries to realize his
- 5:03own will, and the victory is to the strongest.
- 5:07The strongest is not necessarily the best In this field.
- 5:12When one thing is realized, how many others could have been
- 5:15realized which were not? Because this one was realized?
- 5:20And all these things we do not know and quote reference.
