Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / ITB: Are The Eagles Comfortable With Their Cornerback Depth?
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's up, everybody? It's Jeff Mosher.
- 0:15Speaker 1: It's Adam Kaplan. We're finishing off a two-part podcast series
- 0:18Speaker 1: looking at the state of the Eagles roster right now
- 0:21Speaker 1: as we head into Friday night's preseason game against the Bengals.
- 0:25Speaker 1: We did everything on the offense in the last podcast. Defense,
- 0:29Speaker 1: we'll cover in this podcast. And it's funny, Adam, we
- 0:32Speaker 1: always start with the front seven. We work our way
- 0:34Speaker 1: inside out. I got to say, it's been an impressive
- 0:38Speaker 1: summer for the defense, as we would expect. And if
- 0:40Speaker 1: we're just narrowing it to even the front seven or
- 0:43Speaker 1: front six, however you want to call it, it's pretty good.
- 0:47Speaker 1: In terms of question marks, really the only things now
- 0:50Speaker 1: are role players. And I would say the big picture
- 0:53Speaker 1: question that we've discussed already, and there's not much more
- 0:56Speaker 1: to add to it, but just to continue to understand
- 0:58Speaker 1: that this is a situation, is that when the season starts,
- 1:02Speaker 1: we have no idea what kind of shape Jonathan Grenard
- 1:04Speaker 1: is going to be in. And so they're going to
- 1:07Speaker 1: rely heavily on Jalex Hunt, Nolan Smith, AK Arnold Etiketi.
- 1:14Speaker 1: We'll see if Epinesa is on the team. You've heard
- 1:16Speaker 1: Vic talk about, you know, perhaps even opening up the
- 1:19Speaker 1: rotation there. But that to me is really, when you
- 1:23Speaker 1: look at the talent that they've amassed here, it's very good.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Yeah, so the front three has been dominant. Jomo, Davis,
- 1:31Speaker 2: and Carter have been phenomenal. Carter's healthy. Like we, you know,
- 1:33Speaker 2: the shoulder things behind him, at least for now, look great. Yep, yep.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Byron Young's been, he's clearly the four. And Ty Robinson
- 1:40Speaker 2: has come back from the dead. He's back. He's, Vic's,
- 1:45Speaker 2: I mean, it's one of those, where were you when
- 1:47Speaker 2: Vic Fangio said what he said? He was right in
- 1:49Speaker 2: front of me. And now I'm looking at other reporters.
- 1:52Speaker 2: I'm like, what?
- 1:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Dude is an absolute gem. Jim Johnson was my all-time favorite.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Vic's close. They're obviously both brilliant. But Ty Robinson, we
- 2:05Speaker 2: explained in the previous show that there was an issue
- 2:08Speaker 2: with lower body stiffness. That's from a scouting standpoint. That's
- 2:10Speaker 2: what the tape showed in college. That's why, despite everyone
- 2:14Speaker 2: I talked to, I don't know about you, everyone loved him,
- 2:16Speaker 2: absolutely loved his energy, passion for the game, good enough athlete.
- 2:20Speaker 2: I don't want to call him a try-hard guy, but
- 2:23Speaker 2: his effort, motor is phenomenal. Better than a try-hard guy.
- 2:27Speaker 2: But lower body stiffness, getting stood up, technique. Greg Cosell
- 2:32Speaker 2: told us from the tape last summer, just a preseason.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Preseason tape wasn't very good. He was really raw and
- 2:39Speaker 2: needed a lot of work. And quite frankly, Vic gave
- 2:42Speaker 2: the answers to the test last week before the first
- 2:46Speaker 2: practice when he spoke, the first joint. He said, look,
- 2:49Speaker 2: he came back from the dead. And then he did
- 2:51Speaker 2: it again at Robinson.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:54Speaker 2: I would have him on my 53. As you said,
- 2:57Speaker 2: it's pretty much set. And then with Grenard, if he's
- 3:02Speaker 2: on the 53, if he's not on PUP, because in
- 3:08Speaker 2: training camp, you have to count against the roster. He's
- 3:11Speaker 2: on active PUP. If they don't activate him, he does
- 3:16Speaker 2: not count against the roster. He doesn't count against the 53.
- 3:20Speaker 2: So would you give Epinesa way more? In fact, I'd
- 3:22Speaker 2: say it's a lock. He makes a team. If Bernard
- 3:25Speaker 2: is not part of 53. And that's four weeks, by
- 3:27Speaker 2: the way. It's not games. It's weeks.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Excuse me.
- 3:30Speaker 2: It's games, not weeks. They clarified the rule years ago.
- 3:34Speaker 2: People were confused. It's actual games. Right. Not weeks.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Right.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:40Speaker 1: To me, I.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Don't... See, the way the clubs do it is if
- 3:45Speaker 2: they're absolutely sure, A, the guy will be available for
- 3:48Speaker 2: sure the first four weeks. And in the first couple weeks,
- 3:51Speaker 2: he'll be himself. Well... They know better than I. I mean,
- 3:54Speaker 2: better than you, better than anyone. They're going to know
- 3:56Speaker 2: he's in their facility. They're rehabbing him. But to me,
- 4:00Speaker 2: the guy's not practiced since last December. Think about that.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a long time.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Nine months.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Now, in most cases, if you have a player of
- 4:11Speaker 1: Jonathan Grenard's abilities and you're wondering if he's not going
- 4:14Speaker 1: to be available for the first week to however long.
- 4:17Speaker 1: you might be looking for some help or you might
- 4:20Speaker 1: be really worried about the state of the pass rush.
- 4:22Speaker 1: I think the Eagles, one of the teams that, yeah,
- 4:24Speaker 1: of course they want him. And of course it's a concern,
- 4:27Speaker 1: but when you're able to throw a first round pick
- 4:29Speaker 1: in Nolan Smith, well, I think he's had a pretty
- 4:31Speaker 1: good camp. I really do. I mean, he's not had
- 4:33Speaker 1: like a really sexy camp, but like he's in on
- 4:36Speaker 1: a lot of play. He's sets the edge really well.
- 4:38Speaker 1: He is getting pressure and making quarterbacks move off their mark.
- 4:42Speaker 1: And then of course the camp, the jail is hot.
- 4:43Speaker 2: It's sad.
- 4:44Speaker 1: If that just carries even a little bit, into the season.
- 4:48Speaker 1: And he's just a little bit improved from last year.
- 4:51Speaker 1: And you've got AK and maybe Evanessa in that. Then
- 4:55Speaker 1: you're okay. You're pretty good, especially with a secondary that's
- 4:58Speaker 1: going to cover pretty well and give those rushers a
- 5:01Speaker 1: chance to get at the quarterback. Oh, and with a
- 5:03Speaker 1: guy like Jalen Carter, who's absolutely going to draw double
- 5:06Speaker 1: teams that leave guys one-on-one. So I'm not trying to
- 5:09Speaker 1: make it sound like Grenard is like icing on the cake.
- 5:11Speaker 1: He's an important player. But it's not a four-alarm, five-alarm
- 5:14Speaker 1: fire if he's not ready because the Eagles have stocked
- 5:17Speaker 1: themselves so well.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Right. What you mean is that they have other guys.
- 5:21Speaker 2: If Hunt is what he's become, like the second half, six,
- 5:28Speaker 2: seven games of last season in the playoffs, he was phenomenal.
- 5:32Speaker 2: And then you want to build off that for a
- 5:33Speaker 2: guy who now is only his fifth year as a
- 5:36Speaker 2: pass rusher. Think about that. Yeah. He's a safety before
- 5:39Speaker 2: that and had one– 90 years old, grows like four inches.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:44Speaker 2: It's, you know, it's one of those things. Houston Christian,
- 5:48Speaker 2: never heard of the school until they drafted him.
- 5:50Speaker 1: By the way, I had never heard of the school
- 5:53Speaker 1: when it was called Houston Baptist either. Yeah, exactly right.
- 5:57Speaker 1: They changed it.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Right, right. I remember.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I forget who was it that told us that. You
- 6:00Speaker 1: never heard of it because it used to be called
- 6:01Speaker 1: Houston Baptist.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Right. No, I think you might have said it when
- 6:05Speaker 2: we got Greg on two summers ago.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Actually, I think it was Nagy from the Senior Bowl
- 6:09Speaker 1: a couple of years ago, right?
- 6:10Speaker 2: Jim Nagy. Jim Nagy.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Jim Nagy. Yeah, I think he was the.
- 6:13Speaker 2: One who put it on Twitter.
- 6:14Speaker 1: He said that.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Right, right, right.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it was really funny. I want to get back
- 6:17Speaker 1: to one thing, though.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Real quick. No, but here's the problem. When I told
- 6:21Speaker 2: Greg he's got to watch this tape, he goes, listen,
- 6:22Speaker 2: they're not in our system at NFL film. One of, like,
- 6:25Speaker 2: maybe one or two players because of the school. Right.
- 6:28Speaker 2: He asked me what I thought. I said, I think
- 6:29Speaker 2: he's going to go in the third round. I have
- 6:31Speaker 2: no idea where he's going to go. And then, you know,
- 6:34Speaker 2: he said, we're good. I saw it. We're good. We're good.
- 6:36Speaker 2: You know, we got it. And then, of course, because
- 6:39Speaker 2: Jeff and I did that. In fact, I know, I
- 6:41Speaker 2: remember this. We did a special show. We did a.
- 6:45Speaker 2: They were calling player leftovers. It was Hunt, maybe some
- 6:47Speaker 2: other player, two or three players we didn't have time for. Yeah.
- 6:50Speaker 2: And who knew? Like, who knew? And if he has
- 6:52Speaker 2: a breakout season, true breakout from beginning to end. And again,
- 6:57Speaker 2: we don't know about Grenard. We don't know. Even when
- 6:59Speaker 2: he's ready, we have no idea what to expect because
- 7:01Speaker 2: he's in practice in nine months. But with Smith, as
- 7:04Speaker 2: you mentioned, Evocati. It's Evocati, by the way, the pronunciation guy.
- 7:10Speaker 2: I always thought it was Evocati, but Evocati.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Evocati.
- 7:13Speaker 2: And Epinesa's grown as a pass rusher. He's an excellent
- 7:16Speaker 2: run defender. Even if he's on the team, he's not
- 7:20Speaker 2: going to play very much, if at all.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Right.
- 7:22Speaker 2: He's roster death. But the guy's a former starter. That's
- 7:25Speaker 2: the thing. You're getting a former starter.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Second-round pick.
- 7:28Speaker 2: He's improved as a pass rusher. And not that he's
- 7:31Speaker 2: going to be on the 53. This Jose Ramirez, 43.
- 7:34Speaker 2: We had someone from another team tell us that his
- 7:36Speaker 2: tape from the Baltimore game was, like, really intriguing. Yeah.
- 7:41Speaker 2: they'll be fine. Now you don't want Gronard to be
- 7:43Speaker 2: out two months. That, then it becomes a problem because
- 7:46Speaker 2: what happens is the longer marginal starters play, the more
- 7:51Speaker 2: they get exposed to being a marginal starter.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Sure.
- 7:54Speaker 2: So you, but for a short period of time, they
- 7:56Speaker 2: should be fine. I agree. Yeah.
- 7:57Speaker 1: I would say this. I think week one, Washington, they
- 8:00Speaker 1: got all sorts of offensive line. Gronard's not going to play.
- 8:03Speaker 1: I don't think it's going to be debilitating. Week two, Tennessee,
- 8:06Speaker 1: not only do they have offensive line issues, they just
- 8:08Speaker 1: have offense issues in general. Uh, But if we got
- 8:12Speaker 1: to week three, week four, where it's Rams, Bears, back-to-back,
- 8:16Speaker 1: and Grenard wasn't ready, I'd be a little itchy there.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I'd say, ooh.
- 8:21Speaker 2: But again, if he's ready week one, folks, or week two,
- 8:24Speaker 2: just have very low expectations. In fact, I wouldn't have any. Yeah.
- 8:29Speaker 2: You've got to ramp up, right? Yeah, exactly. Vic hates
- 8:34Speaker 2: a ramp-up here. He hates it. Well, Vic, guess what?
- 8:36Speaker 2: This time, it's actually real. The guy needs it. I
- 8:38Speaker 2: don't care if he's on the roster week one. Yeah,
- 8:42Speaker 2: it's a problem. But overall, the front seven and the ILB,
- 8:45Speaker 2: let's get to Vic's favorite position, ILB. That's his position.
- 8:48Speaker 2: He coached for the New Orleans Saints, and they fell
- 8:50Speaker 2: off his stars. Boy, he was in his early 20s
- 8:54Speaker 2: when he worked for Jim Mora. That's crazy. Mid-80s, you know? See,
- 8:59Speaker 2: with Bonnen Campbell and Trott, one of the best backup
- 9:02Speaker 2: ILBs in the NFL, Bonnen we don't know about. The
- 9:05Speaker 2: way I see it is this. If Chance Campbell does
- 9:08Speaker 2: not make it, which is realistic. I mean, do you
- 9:11Speaker 2: really need to keep five ILBs last year? They did
- 9:14Speaker 2: because of Dean. Well, they don't have any injury problems there.
- 9:17Speaker 2: So if they cut him, there's your 69-man roster. That's
- 9:20Speaker 2: your practice squad player. It's perfect. He knows the system. Athletic, long.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Bobby King coached him for a year in Tennessee before
- 9:27Speaker 2: he kept getting hurt. They're good there. They don't really
- 9:30Speaker 2: need to do anything there.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I would agree. He's a really good special teams player.
- 9:35Speaker 1: So I, that would be the reason if they kept,
- 9:38Speaker 1: kept five that they really like him and he can
- 9:40Speaker 1: help out on special teams, but if they don't, you're right.
- 9:42Speaker 1: It's not a major, a major issue and they can
- 9:45Speaker 1: bring them on the practice squad. Do you think, I
- 9:47Speaker 1: think we talked about this last week. Would it help
- 9:50Speaker 1: this young linebacker core outside of Zach Vaughn, who's not young,
- 9:55Speaker 1: but as a starting linebacker, he's really just two years
- 9:58Speaker 1: into it, right? This will be year three. would it
- 10:00Speaker 1: help have a guy on the practice squad who's like
- 10:03Speaker 1: an Oren Burks a little bit of a veteran I
- 10:05Speaker 1: mentioned in the last show if they had I mean
- 10:07Speaker 1: you don't have to do it now but if they
- 10:09Speaker 1: were to have a couple of injuries at that position
- 10:11Speaker 1: you'd want a veteran.
- 10:12Speaker 2: There that's exactly where I was going when I talk
- 10:15Speaker 2: about this yeah uh And one guy said, man, if
- 10:18Speaker 2: we're down to our fourth ILB, then we're not going
- 10:20Speaker 2: to be good anyway. I hear you. That's fine.
- 10:22Speaker 1: I mean, that's not necessarily true.
- 10:24Speaker 2: You don't want to think that way. By the way,
- 10:27Speaker 2: teams don't think that way. The only time they think
- 10:29Speaker 2: that way is Bill Pullian told me when Peyton Manning
- 10:34Speaker 2: got hurt. It's a long story, but Tom Moore, the
- 10:37Speaker 2: legendary offensive coordinator, Tom's in his 80s. You don't plan
- 10:42Speaker 2: for Peyton Manning to get hurt. It's like he never
- 10:45Speaker 2: got hurt until he got hurt.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Oops.
- 10:47Speaker 2: You know, like if you're going, it's like, oops, we
- 10:53Speaker 2: have Curtis painter.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Well, God, right. Exactly. You don't want to get there,
- 10:58Speaker 2: but it's like when Eagles got to AJ feel it,
- 11:00Speaker 2: who knew nobody knew he could have also not done anything.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Would it go from McNabb to, to Coy to AJ?
- 11:08Speaker 1: Is that what it was? Yeah.
- 11:10Speaker 2: And by the way, AJ, remember we did the remote
- 11:12Speaker 2: with him, AJ. And he told us, that how did
- 11:15Speaker 2: he find out they signed Michael Vick? He found out
- 11:17Speaker 2: at halftime.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:19Speaker 2: And he told the team and he goes, and he said,
- 11:21Speaker 2: there goes my job.
- 11:24Speaker 1: It's true. Oh, it's funny.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:27Speaker 1: I actually remember being at the stadium that night and
- 11:31Speaker 1: seeing the report at halftime and we're like, well, what,
- 11:33Speaker 1: what's going on here?
- 11:35Speaker 2: Exactly. We were all scrambling. And then Deontay Lawson's done
- 11:38Speaker 2: some good things. You know, he's come back from the
- 11:40Speaker 2: ACL injury. He's a good developmental guy for the practice squad,
- 11:44Speaker 2: but the one guy who, He's been in the league
- 11:47Speaker 2: with two teams. His chance, Campbell, that's a guy to
- 11:49Speaker 2: keep an eye on.
- 11:51Speaker 1: There you go. All right, so let's move to the
- 11:53Speaker 1: back end. Vic is great because he gives you the answers, right?
- 11:58Speaker 1: I mean, you may not like the answers, and we're
- 12:00Speaker 1: about to talk about some answers that aren't great. But
- 12:04Speaker 1: on Thursday– I'm sorry, Wednesday, he basically said, talking about depth,
- 12:08Speaker 1: you know, you got Reek Willen and Quinion, and behind
- 12:13Speaker 1: them he said– Max McWilliams. And he said, Kelly Ringo.
- 12:17Speaker 1: And he said, Oh, I was first. He said, Jonathan Jones.
- 12:19Speaker 1: And he said, look, Jones, Jones has some practice. We
- 12:22Speaker 1: got to get him back out here, which he actually
- 12:24Speaker 1: did return to practice on Wednesday. So that was a
- 12:26Speaker 1: good sign, but he made it. So he said, those
- 12:29Speaker 1: are the guys. So, and honestly, who else would they
- 12:32Speaker 1: be that you need bodies, but this is Adam where,
- 12:34Speaker 1: when you talk about the initial 53, 53, the fluid
- 12:38Speaker 1: 53 what it looks like today because no matter what
- 12:42Speaker 1: Vic says you know Howie Roseman is not comfortable with
- 12:46Speaker 1: that those as his backup if he is yeah I'll
- 12:49Speaker 1: pass it out you're talking about a 33 year old
- 12:53Speaker 1: corner who just missed a couple weeks of camp right
- 12:55Speaker 1: you're talking about a fifth round pick in his second
- 12:58Speaker 1: year who didn't play at all in year one and
- 13:01Speaker 1: then you're talking about Ringo is in year three or
- 13:04Speaker 1: four now, but a guy who has been given fourth
- 13:06Speaker 1: year pro who's only a special teamer. So I get it.
- 13:11Speaker 1: I'm someone who really likes to wear jeans, but it's
- 13:13Speaker 1: becoming really, really hard these days to find jeans that
- 13:17Speaker 1: aren't tight fitting or restricting, especially for someone who's active.
- 13:21Speaker 1: I like to go to the gym. I'm always out
- 13:23Speaker 1: and about even when I'm not active and I'm just
- 13:26Speaker 1: sitting in a chair or You start to get that
- 13:28Speaker 1: feeling of being constricted and restrained. And I hate that feeling.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Perfect example. Last year, I did a fantasy football draft.
- 13:35Speaker 1: It took three hours and I could just feel myself
- 13:38Speaker 1: moving around my chair, adjusting myself. But everything changed when
- 13:42Speaker 1: I found the perfect jean. It's a jean that fits
- 13:46Speaker 1: me just right. It doesn't pinch. It stretches nicely. Here's
- 13:50Speaker 1: what makes these genuinely different from other stretch jeans. They
- 13:54Speaker 1: don't look like stretch jeans. They look like sharp classic
- 13:58Speaker 1: denim they're so polished that you can go straight from
- 14:01Speaker 1: like a tailgate parking lot right to a dinner reservation
- 14:04Speaker 1: without anybody clocking you as that guy who just spent
- 14:07Speaker 1: four hours in a lot i just recently did another
- 14:10Speaker 1: fantasy football draft and i wore the perfect jean and
- 14:13Speaker 1: i was just so comfortable look these things are flexible
- 14:16Speaker 1: enough that you can actually move around in them you
- 14:19Speaker 1: can bend to get that drink in the cooler you
- 14:22Speaker 1: can sit in a chair for a few hours and
- 14:25Speaker 1: You can stand for the anthem at a ball game.
- 14:27Speaker 1: You can get up and guard somebody in a pickup
- 14:29Speaker 1: game wearing the perfect jean without even hearing a seam
- 14:33Speaker 1: threatened to give out. All right. Our listeners get 15%
- 14:36Speaker 1: off their first order plus free shipping at theperfectjean.nyc or
- 14:41Speaker 1: Google the perfect jean and use code birds for 15% off.
- 14:47Speaker 1: That's right. 15% off your first order plus free shipping
- 14:50Speaker 1: at theperfectjean.nyc using the code birds. Hey, football season is
- 14:56Speaker 1: coming up soon. And I know that's going to be
- 14:58Speaker 1: so many late nights for me. You know how many
- 15:00Speaker 1: times the Eagles are on prime time and I'm not
- 15:02Speaker 1: going to be going to bed until after well after midnight.
- 15:05Speaker 1: And that means the next day I can probably count
- 15:07Speaker 1: the number of cups of coffee. I would drink on
- 15:10Speaker 1: two hands. But not anymore. That's because for a while now,
- 15:14Speaker 1: I've been using Ultra Pouches. It is instant focus in
- 15:18Speaker 1: a pouch. These pouches are completely nicotine-free and caffeine-free. And boy,
- 15:24Speaker 1: do I get a great jolt from these truly clean pouches.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Plant-powered pouches that are designed to sharpen your mind and
- 15:30Speaker 1: lift your energy all without caffeine, nicotine, or crash. I'm
- 15:35Speaker 1: also seeing these everywhere. They're blowing up, so I know
- 15:38Speaker 1: I'm not the only one. Did you know it was
- 15:40Speaker 1: possible to feel this energized and focused without nicotine or caffeine?
- 15:45Speaker 1: I certainly didn't. Also, I'm less edgy and less anxious

- 15:52Speaker 1: drink a lot of coffee. I will totally be using
- 15:55Speaker 1: them when I'm burning the candle at both ends, trying
- 15:58Speaker 1: to record, write, produce podcasts. I will absolutely need them.

- 16:26Speaker 2: He's been here. He knows the system, Ringo. Yeah. He's
- 16:30Speaker 2: gotten a little better. Folks, as I said three years ago,
- 16:33Speaker 2: he's no better than a four. I was wrong. He's
- 16:35Speaker 2: no better than a five.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Okay?
- 16:37Speaker 2: I apologize. Yeah. But he's healthy. He's always healthy. And
- 16:41Speaker 2: he can run in a straight line. He's an elite
- 16:44Speaker 2: special teams coverage player. But he's just not a corner.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Like Chris Maragos, okay, was a safety by trade. Elite,
- 16:50Speaker 2: elite special teams player. But... We've talked about this before.
- 16:55Speaker 2: When Marcos had to play defense, he was almost like
- 16:58Speaker 2: in Cherry Hill. He was so far. He was like
- 17:00Speaker 2: 25 yards back.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I'm not joking. Go check the tape. I know.
- 17:03Speaker 1: I remember.
- 17:04Speaker 2: It was crazy. From the press box, you're like, what
- 17:06Speaker 2: the hell? Did they really think he can't do anything?
- 17:10Speaker 1: He was in a different zip code. You're right.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Yeah. But, yeah, now I understand something. If Howie's willing
- 17:19Speaker 2: to do this, trade for a corner, that's fine. They
- 17:22Speaker 2: don't need to trade for a corner. Just go through
- 17:25Speaker 2: the cut list. You want someone who knows the match system, okay?
- 17:30Speaker 2: That is super important. Ja'Cory Bennett hasn't gotten it. He's
- 17:33Speaker 2: hurt anyway, and he just didn't get the system, okay?
- 17:36Speaker 2: So that trade was a failure. You got to make
- 17:40Speaker 2: sure the guy knows the system. Because to bring in
- 17:43Speaker 2: a guy who can at this point, like you could
- 17:47Speaker 2: bring any veteran on the street, sign him to the
- 17:49Speaker 2: practice squad. The guy's got to understand where he's at.
- 17:53Speaker 2: The top three spots are taken. You could be our
- 17:54Speaker 2: fourth corner. That's the selling point and have a chance
- 17:57Speaker 2: to do something in the playoffs. That's it.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Where's old friend Kindle Vildor? Wasn't he on one of
- 18:01Speaker 1: the teams that the Eagles played?
- 18:02Speaker 2: Yeah, he– I think– Is he a Raven? He– I
- 18:07Speaker 2: just saw him.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like his name recently.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Came up for something. And here's the thing about Vildor.
- 18:15Speaker 2: He could play nickel and he could play corner. Like
- 18:17Speaker 2: he was not really– what happened with him was when
- 18:21Speaker 2: the lions went down to like their fourth or fifth corner, he,
- 18:25Speaker 2: they put them a corner. They put them from, they
- 18:26Speaker 2: move them from nickel to the corner and he did
- 18:29Speaker 2: a yeoman's job. I mean, he's, you know, not ideal.
- 18:31Speaker 2: You don't want them really playing on the outside. You
- 18:32Speaker 2: want them playing inside, but yeah, there'll be plenty of
- 18:35Speaker 2: these guys.
- 18:36Speaker 1: And as I mentioned, he is with the Patriots, by
- 18:38Speaker 1: the way.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. There you go. I know I saw him. So, but,
- 18:42Speaker 2: and we'll explain more about this on future shows, but
- 18:46Speaker 2: just to give you the cliffhanger version, What you see
- 18:50Speaker 2: a lot is when these players are cut, the clubs
- 18:54Speaker 2: want to sign them, don't sign them back week one.
- 18:56Speaker 2: They sign them week two. That way they don't guarantee
- 18:59Speaker 2: a salary for the full season as a vested veteran.
- 19:02Speaker 2: So that's the role. That's why you see the spate
- 19:05Speaker 2: of these things that happens after week one. But for
- 19:11Speaker 2: the totality of the season, they need a veteran corner.
- 19:13Speaker 2: If you want to make another run, obviously the Rams
- 19:17Speaker 2: have something to say about that. But if you want
- 19:19Speaker 2: to make a run for the playoffs, you've got to
- 19:21Speaker 2: have a better insurance policy. Then Jonathan Jones is 33
- 19:24Speaker 2: hurt last season hurt. Now they roll the dice at
- 19:28Speaker 2: 22 and they got away with it. Don't do it again. Yeah.
- 19:31Speaker 2: You don't, you don't want to luck is luck is
- 19:34Speaker 2: not something you want to wish for.
- 19:35Speaker 1: It'd be interesting to see if he plays Friday night.
- 19:37Speaker 1: On one hand, he needs some reps. I mean, he's
- 19:39Speaker 1: missed some time. He's missed time. You don't want him
- 19:43Speaker 1: to get hurt again.
- 19:44Speaker 2: You know? Yeah. I don't, he's super valuable. He's one
- 19:47Speaker 2: play away from having to start.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 19:50Speaker 2: And that's the problem folks. If the other two corners
- 19:54Speaker 2: can't play and he's starting your third corner is.
- 19:56Speaker 1: You Right now it's Mac McWilliams. But that's where I
- 20:01Speaker 1: think what we're discussing is if Howie's making a move,
- 20:05Speaker 1: because there's not going to be a lot of really
- 20:06Speaker 1: good corners available, if Howie's making a move, it's to
- 20:09Speaker 1: upgrade corner four. Because that's where... Jones is on the three.
- 20:17Speaker 2: We're not questioning it. He's the three. There's no one challenged.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Even with being out, there's no one challenging him. You
- 20:23Speaker 2: want to upgrade number four. Again, it could be a
- 20:25Speaker 2: practice squad sign.
- 20:26Speaker 1: So to move on, To be fair, Vic has praised
- 20:31Speaker 1: Mack McWilliams a little bit more than... I thought he would.
- 20:35Speaker 1: I thought he did play decently against the Patriots. There
- 20:38Speaker 1: were a couple of receptions that were given up, but
- 20:40Speaker 1: right in front of him. I think it was an
- 20:41Speaker 1: average of like four yards per something. We have all
- 20:44Speaker 1: the information inside the data that is coming out Friday morning.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Sam went through it. We focused on Max McWilliams. So
- 20:50Speaker 1: the kids should be given some opportunity. This is one
- 20:53Speaker 1: of the few guys who you watch on Friday, and
- 20:56Speaker 1: yet you understand he's going against backups, but you're still
- 20:59Speaker 1: looking for good, solid play and signs of encouragement.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, during the practices, he gave up the joints.
- 21:05Speaker 2: He gave up some plays, made some plays. He's a
- 21:09Speaker 2: physical corner. There are a lot of teams that liked him,
- 21:11Speaker 2: you know, not a speed guy sort of plays bigger
- 21:14Speaker 2: than his listed size. He's under five 11, but he
- 21:17Speaker 2: is physical.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:19Speaker 2: No, no corner. He's not played corner here. I mean,
- 21:21Speaker 2: excuse me. He's not played safety here. They've not done that.
- 21:23Speaker 2: I know some teams mentioned it to us maybe someday,
- 21:26Speaker 2: but he's played nickel and he's played corner and, Boy,
- 21:29Speaker 2: they need that developmental corner the worst way, man. They
- 21:31Speaker 2: need a young corner who they can develop. He's developing
- 21:35Speaker 2: a little bit, but they really need to add a
- 21:37Speaker 2: veteran for the totality of the season on the practice squad.
- 21:40Speaker 2: It doesn't have to be in the 53.
- 21:42Speaker 1: How about our old friend, former Eagles nickelback, might be
- 21:45Speaker 1: starting safety for the Lions, Devontae Maddox, depending on whether
- 21:49Speaker 1: or not they can get Brands and Kirby back.
- 21:51Speaker 2: They have Kirby Joseph, man. He is an absolute star,
- 21:55Speaker 2: but his knee is so bad.
- 21:57Speaker 1: They're both really good. Branch is a really good player.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Branch is a stud. In fact, I remember the Lions
- 22:01Speaker 2: telling me they thought at one point he was the
- 22:02Speaker 2: best corner. When he got there, they were trying to
- 22:04Speaker 2: figure out is he a safety, nickel, or corner?
- 22:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:07Speaker 2: And they play him a little bit of corner, but
- 22:09Speaker 2: mostly nickel and safety. He's a stud, but he's coming
- 22:12Speaker 2: back from major injury. Their cornerback depth is terrible. I
- 22:15Speaker 2: didn't like them last year, and I was proven right.
- 22:17Speaker 2: They were my breakout team like four years ago, but
- 22:20Speaker 2: injuries matter, and they've not done an adequate job at
- 22:23Speaker 2: corner or edge rush. You know, the Marcus Davenport signing–
- 22:27Speaker 2: As good as Brad Holmes is, he just couldn't get
- 22:29Speaker 2: away from the guy. I don't know what his fascination
- 22:31Speaker 2: with the guy is. Always hurt.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:34Speaker 2: And he relied on him. He rolled snake eyes. And
- 22:37Speaker 2: there's a reason why guys like Howie, John Schneider. Brad
- 22:40Speaker 2: Holmes is really good. Look, he's one of the best
- 22:42Speaker 2: GMs in Lions history. He's a top five GM. Yeah.
- 22:45Speaker 2: But there's a reason why some teams just can't beat
- 22:48Speaker 2: the injury bug.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Right.
- 22:50Speaker 2: And you've got to look at the way you train. Yep.
- 22:53Speaker 2: You know, we crushed the Eagles in 2018, whatever year,
- 22:56Speaker 2: I think it was. It was our second year of
- 22:57Speaker 2: our company. Yeah. And they just had a tip. But
- 23:00Speaker 2: there were a lot of mistakes. Talking to agents about it,
- 23:03Speaker 2: they were really upset.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Yep.
- 23:05Speaker 2: And then, you know, Howie shook it up. He did
- 23:07Speaker 2: shake up their medical department very significantly. He took responsibility.
- 23:10Speaker 2: That's how you do it, by the way. You take
- 23:11Speaker 2: a look at it. Yeah. Bring Arsh Denodin from Penn.
- 23:15Speaker 2: And Tom Hunkley came back, who was with them. They
- 23:20Speaker 2: went to Minnesota with Childress, came back. Yep. They're great.
- 23:23Speaker 2: I mean, knock on wood, hopefully they have a good
- 23:25Speaker 2: injury season here.
- 23:25Speaker 1: For sure.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Health and everything. But they do it well, man. One
- 23:32Speaker 2: more epilogue to this. And for as much as he
- 23:35Speaker 2: got crushed and he deserved it, Chip Kelly bringing in
- 23:37Speaker 2: sports science here. Like, they were doing it. The Eagles
- 23:40Speaker 2: will defend that themselves. But not to the degree that
- 23:43Speaker 2: Chip did.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Right.
- 23:45Speaker 2: And you got to give him credit. Chip, for all
- 23:47Speaker 2: his problems, bringing in Stout, obviously, major grand slam. and
- 23:53Speaker 2: some other coaches. Yeah, pretty good. Better than you think
- 23:56Speaker 2: he was.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Ryan Pagnetti was brought in for a chip.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Pagnetti brothers. Pagnetti brothers.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Yeah, Pagnetti brothers. Ryan was the big fourth down analytics
- 24:03Speaker 1: guy for Doug during a Super Bowl run, the first
- 24:06Speaker 1: Super Bowl. All right, so that's the corner situation. Safety. Look,
- 24:12Speaker 1: I mean, Vicks, I think also he gives you the–
- 24:14Speaker 1: Marcus Epps was a starter, and he's being challenged. He's
- 24:17Speaker 1: still calling it a competition. Here's my take on it.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Because I think Michael Carter's played well. He had another
- 24:22Speaker 1: interception practice on Wednesday. Vic said he just wants him
- 24:27Speaker 1: more experience at safety. You know, he's played nickel for
- 24:30Speaker 1: most of his career. Now he's playing safety. It's not exactly.
- 24:33Speaker 1: There's differences. You know that. So he sounds like he's
- 24:37Speaker 1: comfortable right now. with what he's seen from Marcus Epps,
- 24:42Speaker 1: but he likes Carter enough to say, hey, if he
- 24:45Speaker 1: continues to get reps and practice and throughout the first
- 24:48Speaker 1: few weeks of the month, and if there's a change
- 24:50Speaker 1: that needs to be made or we have an injury,
- 24:52Speaker 1: I'm fine with Michael Carter at safety. That's what I
- 24:56Speaker 1: took from what he said. And basically what I've seen
- 24:58Speaker 1: from Michael Carter, this camp is a good camp. So
- 25:01Speaker 1: I think he's adjusting well. And again, you have Dajin
- 25:04Speaker 1: playing all those snaps at safety anyway, next to Makuba.
- 25:07Speaker 1: When they go to nickel, then it becomes... Marcus Epps. Yeah.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Well, he also has played dive safety, Carter. And I
- 25:14Speaker 2: think Andrew said it very well. His versatility has been
- 25:17Speaker 2: actually a curse in terms of him starting. Yeah. Because
- 25:20Speaker 2: he's back up nickel, back up, well, competing for a
- 25:23Speaker 2: safety job and also dive safety. And he had not
- 25:27Speaker 2: played safety since college. He did not play. I was
- 25:29Speaker 2: told he didn't play safety for the Jets. They moved
- 25:31Speaker 2: him to nickel as soon as they drafted him. Now,
- 25:34Speaker 2: what people thought was safety, they didn't think it was
- 25:36Speaker 2: safety in Jets. So, but I remember some of the
- 25:40Speaker 2: jets saying, Hey, he's going to play safety for Philly.
- 25:42Speaker 2: This is last year and they cross train them, but
- 25:45Speaker 2: now they got a full off season doing it. Vic
- 25:47Speaker 2: said he hasn't really done it before. Well, he meant
- 25:50Speaker 2: since college. Correct. So they're okay. Look, they have four
- 25:54Speaker 2: guys and this is another position, whether it's Andre Sam
- 25:57Speaker 2: on the practice squad or veteran, you know how I
- 25:59Speaker 2: did say they're going to sign. So when they went up,
- 26:00Speaker 2: not doing it, that's okay. You're allowed to change your mind.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:03Speaker 2: But overall, This roster's pretty good. If everybody's healthy, and
- 26:07Speaker 2: obviously the big, the red herring here is Grenard. That's just,
- 26:14Speaker 2: had he not gotten hurt, my God, this defense, the
- 26:17Speaker 2: starting unit, in Macuba, like safety's a little shaky. Woolen's
- 26:22Speaker 2: got to play more consistently. Vic kind of told the truth,
- 26:24Speaker 2: like he always does. But overall, the talent level, the
- 26:27Speaker 2: starting 11's really.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Really good. It is really good. Oh, and I guess Wisniewski,
- 26:33Speaker 1: did he practice at the open practice? Because he had
- 26:35Speaker 1: a concussion. No, no. I think he had a concussion
- 26:37Speaker 1: in the game. Yeah, he had a concussion. So he
- 26:40Speaker 1: finally comes back, gets to play against the Patriots, and
- 26:44Speaker 1: now he's out with a concussion. It's like a snake-bitten
- 26:48Speaker 1: camp for the guy. I feel bad for him.
- 26:50Speaker 2: OTAs too. Remember, he had the hamstring in OTAs. Yeah,
- 26:55Speaker 2: it's tough when you're– your seventh round pick, you can't
- 26:58Speaker 2: help the club when you're in the tub. It's just,
- 27:00Speaker 2: it is what it is. And boy, it was, that
- 27:01Speaker 2: is a position where it's like one of these unheralded kids.
- 27:07Speaker 2: I mean, Gushakin, our guy, Max, you know, I think
- 27:15Speaker 2: they played well.
- 27:16Speaker 1: I think that they're for, for what they are for
- 27:18Speaker 1: undrafted free agents.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:20Speaker 1: I pay attention to them in practice. They don't look lost.
- 27:23Speaker 1: They're not committing penalties. I don't know that there's room
- 27:26Speaker 1: for them, but I would like them to figure out
- 27:28Speaker 1: how to get them on the practice squad because I
- 27:30Speaker 1: think they deserve some more development time.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Yes, and that's what the practice squad is for. But unfortunately,
- 27:36Speaker 2: to get them there, you have to waive them first.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Yeah, but I don't know that either– they're both undrafted
- 27:41Speaker 1: free agents, right? Oh, yeah.
- 27:42Speaker 2: I'd be shocked if they were claimed. Shocked. I don't
- 27:46Speaker 2: see– the only– Yeah, in fact, I got to see
- 27:50Speaker 2: if they guaranteed any of their base salary instead of
- 27:52Speaker 2: just giving a signing bonus. I have to see what
- 27:54Speaker 2: their contracts look like. But overall, yeah, not like the
- 27:57Speaker 2: offensive one was fun. I mean, I remember when we
- 27:59Speaker 2: were taping that show on Wednesday morning, I was like,
- 28:03Speaker 2: I could have done two hours on that show because
- 28:04Speaker 2: there's so much going on.
- 28:06Speaker 1: There's a lot.
- 28:06Speaker 2: So many scenarios. And when you, me, and Andrew do
- 28:09Speaker 2: our 53-man roster show, that to me is going to
- 28:12Speaker 2: be the hardest we've ever done. I'm like pulling my
- 28:15Speaker 2: hair out on this thing. It's like I got– I
- 28:17Speaker 2: can't– I cannot– I can't settle on enough. Like I
- 28:21Speaker 2: can't forget the tight end situation because of, because of
- 28:25Speaker 2: the Hollywood Browns contract. He's a lock to make it. Yep.
- 28:28Speaker 2: I know people want to put Carson steel.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Unless he's traded. Right. Unless he's traded.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Someone's going to trade for $ 5 million.
- 28:35Speaker 1: Honestly, Adam, I would have ordinarily said no, but there
- 28:38Speaker 1: have been, like, what, four or five major injuries at
- 28:42Speaker 1: wide receiver? It's true. Like Ricky Pearsall, Jaden Higgins, somebody
- 28:47Speaker 1: the other day just went down.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Oh, but here's why.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Jordan Tyson.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Yep. Oh, yeah, Jordan. Jordan Tyson is such a– he's
- 28:58Speaker 2: just one of the worst injury histories I've ever seen.
- 29:00Speaker 2: He got hurt again. He's going to be out a while. No,
- 29:02Speaker 2: what you can do, if you really want to get
- 29:04Speaker 2: like a fifth round pick or fourth round pick, fourth
- 29:05Speaker 2: is way too much. Fifth round pick, hey, hey, just
- 29:09Speaker 2: like the Eagles did with Dalton, they're going to pay
- 29:13Speaker 2: a million and a half. The Panthers are paying two
- 29:15Speaker 2: and a half. The Panthers were going to do anything
- 29:16Speaker 2: to get to move Dalton. Like they were like, let's say, hey,
- 29:19Speaker 2: what will it take for you to take him off
- 29:20Speaker 2: our hands?
- 29:20Speaker 1: Right.
- 29:21Speaker 2: We'll eat two and a half. You take one and
- 29:22Speaker 2: a half. We'll get a seventh. Sure. Like for Hollywood, yeah. Like, okay,
- 29:27Speaker 2: we'll take a million and a half. You take three
- 29:29Speaker 2: and a half.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Give us a fifth. Yeah. Okay.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Give us your sixth. Based on these parameters, you can
- 29:37Speaker 2: be a fifth. Right.
- 29:38Speaker 1: The Dolphins are going to be sixth. like malik washington
- 29:41Speaker 1: and caleb douglas.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Oh oh now now the hell he could now.
- 29:44Speaker 1: They're not trying to spend money because they're taking all
- 29:46Speaker 1: these but if you cash.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Yeah they're spending like okay they are trying to kill
- 29:51Speaker 2: a lot of money a lot of cash but oh
- 29:53Speaker 2: oh and uh.
- 29:55Speaker 1: They owe everybody. They owe Chubb a lot of cash.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Two over $ 50 million.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Chubb is still making, right? Isn't Chubb still giving them
- 30:01Speaker 1: dead cap money?
- 30:03Speaker 2: Well, dead, but not cash.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Not cash.
- 30:05Speaker 2: That's true.
- 30:05Speaker 1: But he might get a little bit of cash. But
- 30:06Speaker 1: either way.
- 30:07Speaker 2: They need receivers. As we said before, man, their situation
- 30:11Speaker 2: is so dire. I love what Jeff Halfley, their head coach,
- 30:15Speaker 2: his comments were like, wow. He wasn't happy. And I
- 30:19Speaker 2: saw them with commandos two weeks ago. They were absolutely horrendous,
- 30:24Speaker 2: the Dolphins. Just one of the worst rosters I've ever
- 30:27Speaker 2: seen live. Like, just terrible. I was doing a Dolphins pod,
- 30:33Speaker 2: and I was telling this guy, I was like, dude,
- 30:36Speaker 2: if Halfway gets five wins or more, I have to
- 30:39Speaker 2: vote for him for coach of the year.
- 30:40Speaker 1: It's so bad.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Can you imagine saying five wins is like an achievement?
- 30:45Speaker 1: No, I can't. But I've seen that Dolphins roster, and
- 30:49Speaker 1: I was like, wow. Hey, Philly fans, game day is
- 30:52Speaker 1: stressful enough. Parking, traffic, long lines, we've all been there.
- 30:57Speaker 1: But when it comes to your cannabis... Camden Apothecary makes

- 31:47Speaker 1: made for Philly fans 21 and up. Next week, I think,
- 31:51Speaker 1: we'll do our annual, because we'll have that dead period
- 31:53Speaker 1: of one extra week of camp, but there will be
- 31:55Speaker 1: no open practices. And so we'll only have a little stuff.
- 32:00Speaker 1: We can do our bottom five teams, top 10 teams
- 32:03Speaker 1: that we did the last few years. We'll do that.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Oh, real quick. Yeah. Real quick.
- 32:08Speaker 1: Patreon.
- 32:09Speaker 2: Patreon. Do we announce it yet?
- 32:13Speaker 1: Yeah, well, we've announced it to our patrons. Yeah, yeah.
- 32:16Speaker 2: So we've eliminated tier one. It's tier two and tier three.
- 32:19Speaker 2: Commercial free. Get it first. Co-sell tier for tier three.
- 32:25Speaker 2: You got us in tier two doing live streams every week.
- 32:28Speaker 2: No question is off limits. If you know, you know.
- 32:31Speaker 2: That's all I'm going to say.
- 32:32Speaker 1: It's actually still going to be tier one and tier
- 32:34Speaker 1: two because we've just eliminated what the original tier is.
- 32:37Speaker 1: So there's two tiers now instead of three. So it'll
- 32:39Speaker 1: be tier one and tier two.
- 32:41Speaker 2: But I understand what you're saying. but it's the price
- 32:43Speaker 2: structure is the same. We didn't raise the price. We
- 32:45Speaker 2: just eliminated the tier one, which was, that's how we
- 32:48Speaker 2: pay Greg and Andrew for folks to know your, your,
- 32:51Speaker 2: your membership pays the people work for us and we
- 32:54Speaker 2: don't pocket it. So it's very helpful. We appreciate it.
