Transcript
- 0:09The Church of Corinth is quite the church. It
- 0:13is a multi -generational church. It is a multi,
- 0:18what we would call a diverse church. It's really,
- 0:22there's people from all over at this church.
- 0:28And there's a predominant Jewish membership of
- 0:31this church. Understand, this is not like there's
- 0:34one building sitting outside of Corinth where
- 0:37everybody comes and meets once a week. These
- 0:39are house churches everywhere. It was like that
- 0:43in every city, okay? Now, understanding that
- 0:47there are some issues that Paul needs to deal
- 0:49with because there's some divisive things happening
- 0:53within the church that could rip the church apart.
- 0:55And there's many things we're going to deal with
- 0:58in this. So how do we live out the gospel in
- 1:02the church? How do we make sure that we're exemplifying
- 1:06Christ in everything we do? And that's really
- 1:08how he kind of handles and answers this particular
- 1:11church. And he guides them through this in two
- 1:14letters. Okay? Which we will get to. There are
- 1:17a lot of issues here. And so we're going to manage
- 1:21that. Okay? Now, let's read 1 Corinthians chapter
- 1:251, verse 1 through 17, and then we're going to
- 1:28pick up next week on the rest. Okay? Paul, called
- 1:31by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ
- 1:34Jesus and our brother Sosthenes, to the church
- 1:38of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified
- 1:42in Christ Jesus. called to be saints, together
- 1:46with all those who are in every place, call upon
- 1:50the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. both their
- 1:53Lord and ours, grace to you and peace from God
- 1:57our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give
- 2:01thanks to my God always for you because of the
- 2:05grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus,
- 2:09that in every way you were enriched in him in
- 2:14all speech and all knowledge. even as the testimony
- 2:19about Christ was confirmed among you, so that
- 2:22you are not lacking in any gift as you wait for
- 2:29the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will
- 2:33sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day
- 2:37of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful by
- 2:41whom you were called into fellowship of his Son,
- 2:44Jesus Christ, our Lord. I appeal to you, brothers,
- 2:48by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all
- 2:53of you agree that there be no divisions among
- 2:56you, but that you be united in the same mind
- 3:01and same judgment. For it has been reported to
- 3:05me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling
- 3:08among you, my brothers. Each one of you says,
- 3:14I follow Paul, or I follow Apollos, or I follow
- 3:17Cephas, or I follow Christ. Is Christ divided?
- 3:21Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized
- 3:24in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized
- 3:27none of you except. Crispus and Gaius, so that
- 3:32no one may say that you were baptized in my name.
- 3:36I did baptize also the household of Stephanas.
- 3:39Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized
- 3:42anyone else. For Christ did not send me to baptize,
- 3:47but to preach the gospel and not with words of
- 3:52eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be
- 3:55emptied of its power. So I want you to, did you
- 3:58hear the common, a common theme here? The Lord
- 4:01Jesus Christ. This is his church. That's what
- 4:05he's saying here. You are responsible to the
- 4:07master Jesus Christ. He is the master of his
- 4:11people. You are his slaves and his people. He
- 4:15purchased you at a price. There's a cost that
- 4:18was paid. You don't belong to yourself. You belong
- 4:20to him. That's why Paul reiterates this Lord
- 4:23Jesus Christ. That's number one. Number two,
- 4:26he reiterates Lord Jesus Christ to show authority
- 4:29to whom you answer to. It's him and him alone.
- 4:33Okay? So this constant in these first 17 verses
- 4:36is a constant theme, the Lord Jesus Christ. The
- 4:40Lord Jesus Christ. Over and over again because
- 4:43he's setting a precedent so that they know that
- 4:46they just don't do whatever they want. They do
- 4:49what God commands. And he's the master. And that's
- 4:52the way it is. He's the boss. Okay? Principle
- 4:57number one, the privilege and joy of being in
- 5:00God's family is solely due to his will, his work,
- 5:04and for his glory. The privilege and joy of being
- 5:08in God's family is solely due to his will, his
- 5:12work, and for his glory. In Hebrews 10, 14, it
- 5:16states it this way, for by a single offering,
- 5:19he has perfected for all time those. who are
- 5:23being sanctified. In other words, we who have
- 5:27been saved by Christ, for Christ, he is our offering
- 5:32on our behalf, and he has been sanctifying us
- 5:36and has already perfected us in the kingdom.
- 5:391 Corinthians 1, 1 -3. Paul, called by the will
- 5:43of God. Very important to understand. A man of
- 5:47God who is a preacher of God is called by God.
- 5:50That is a great responsibility for anyone called
- 5:54by God. Okay? But specifically, Paul is not only
- 5:58talking about him being a preacher, he's talking
- 6:00about his apostleship. Called by the will of
- 6:04God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus. Three very
- 6:08important things. Three basic things you need
- 6:10to understand about an apostle. In these modern
- 6:12days, there's a lot of quote -unquote apostles.
- 6:15Apostle, whatever you want to call themselves.
- 6:18Okay? Like female apostles, which is crazy. I
- 6:22don't even know where that came from. But an
- 6:25apostle must be taught by Christ directly, must
- 6:29have seen Christ, and must be called by Christ.
- 6:34Called, seen, taught. Paul was called, seen,
- 6:38and taught. He was called by God, which we know,
- 6:41because he came face to face with Jesus on the
- 6:44road to Damascus. Do you remember that little?
- 6:47And then people go, well, how could he be taught
- 6:49by Jesus? He didn't walk with Jesus for the three
- 6:51years he was here. Do you remember he was blind
- 6:53for three days? Sat in a bed, blind, couldn't
- 6:56do anything. Do you think he was just sitting
- 6:58there having like whatevers? No, he was taught
- 7:01all the things that Paul had studied, Christ
- 7:04had brought to him. Right? So he was taught by
- 7:08Christ. And so there's a clear apostleship of
- 7:12Paul. Paul clarifies that apostleship based upon
- 7:15not only his work, but his preaching and his
- 7:19life. It's been verified by the Spirit of God.
- 7:22Now, that's enough on Paul's issue. And he also
- 7:26talks about our brother Sosthenes. I'm not going
- 7:30to get into Sosthenes right now. Okay? He's mentioned
- 7:33like once. And there's no need to go into a whole
- 7:36sermon on Sosthenes. To the church of God. He
- 7:41starts at verse 2. To the church of God. This
- 7:45term, church of God, shows ownership of his people.
- 7:49This is God's church. And this term literally
- 7:53shows, in the original language, ownership. God
- 7:59owns you. Now think about that. God owns you.
- 8:03How does he own you? Did you have a debt you
- 8:06could not pay? And if someone comes and pays
- 8:08a debt you cannot pay, what's that called? A
- 8:11slave. Except in Christ, he gives us freedom.
- 8:15That doesn't mean he does not keep us. He gives
- 8:19us freedom within him to do whatever he's called
- 8:22us to do. As long as we live according to his
- 8:24word and his ways and love his things. We can
- 8:28walk freely and we are free because where the
- 8:30spirit of Lord is, there is freedom. But we have
- 8:32a debt. He is our owner. He owns the church.
- 8:37He paid for her by his own blood. A cost you
- 8:41could not pay. So not only did you have a debt
- 8:43you couldn't pay, the cost was too deep for you
- 8:47to pay. Okay? And this is important. So he's
- 8:50saying the church of God, my people, that is
- 8:53in Corinth. To those sanctified in Christ Jesus.
- 8:58This word sanctified means purified and consecrated
- 9:02ones. In Christ Jesus, we have been purified
- 9:06and consecrated to him. Set apart for him, to
- 9:11him, to do as he pleases with us. Thank God he's
- 9:16so good. Second thing, called to be saints. This
- 9:21understanding of saints is not what the Catholic
- 9:23Church states. What a saint is. I'm sorry. The
- 9:27Pope does not have any legal right to determine
- 9:30who is the privileged ones. This is only God
- 9:35and God alone. Now, this word called to be saints
- 9:38means given the privilege to be a holy one. You've
- 9:42been given the privilege to be one of God's holy
- 9:46ones. Think about that. Not only is that a privilege,
- 9:52but it's a pretty... Pretty high to hold, isn't
- 9:55it? That's why God does it for us. We're going
- 9:58to see that in a minute. Now, together with all
- 10:02those, meaning believers, in every place who
- 10:06call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 10:09So you are saints with all the saints of the
- 10:14entire world. That's what Paul's saying here.
- 10:17In other words, you're not to your own little
- 10:19self in your own little city. You have a much
- 10:23bigger connection in reality of the family of
- 10:26God. And what happens to you happens to all of
- 10:30us. That's what he's trying to imply here. Trying
- 10:33to set a precedent. Now, let's keep reading.
- 10:37He says, so if we call on the name of the Lord
- 10:41Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours. Notice
- 10:46he says this, master, both their master and our
- 10:51master. Isn't that interesting? And then he ends
- 10:54it with his common statement, grace to you and
- 10:58peace from God, our father and the Lord Jesus
- 11:02Christ, meaning the son. We see the two persons
- 11:04of the Trinity here. Why? They are the ones who
- 11:09declared the authority of what they have done,
- 11:11okay? Scripture says that Jesus says, all authority
- 11:14has been given unto me. It's showing that the
- 11:18reality of our position with God is because of
- 11:21the Father's plan and the fulfillment of Christ.
- 11:25Without that, there is no guarantee. Okay? Second.
- 11:30The Father has provided everything we need in
- 11:32Christ to abound in his word and the truth of
- 11:37his gospel, specifically for us in the gospel
- 11:42and in life. The Father has provided everything
- 11:45we need in Christ to abound in word and the truth
- 11:49of the gospel and life. Everything we need is
- 11:53in Christ. That's the idea here. 2 Peter 1, 3
- 11:57-4. His divine power has granted to us all things
- 12:02that pertain to life and godliness through the
- 12:06knowledge of him who called us to his own glory
- 12:10and excellence, by which he has granted to us
- 12:14his precious and very great power. promises so
- 12:19that through them you may become partakers of
- 12:23the divine nature having escaped the corruption
- 12:26that is in the world because of sinful desires.
- 12:29That is a complete work of soteriology. A complete
- 12:35work in every way. And that's what Peter is clarifying
- 12:39in 2 Peter 1, 3 -4. So 1 Corinthians 1, 4 -8.
- 12:45This is the way Paul states it here. I give thanks
- 12:48to my God always for you because of the grace
- 12:53of God that was given you in Christ Jesus. Who
- 12:58has given us grace? God the Father has given
- 13:02us grace. Where is our grace? Where do we attain
- 13:04our grace? Where do we obtain our grace? Through
- 13:07Christ and Christ alone. The word grace of God
- 13:10here means the favor of God delivered in Christ
- 13:14to you. That's God's favor from the Father to
- 13:19you through the Son. That. Verse 5, in every
- 13:23way you were enriched in him in all speech and
- 13:28all knowledge. In every way. The term enriched
- 13:31here means richly furnished. I want you to think
- 13:34about that. What an amazing statement. It'd be
- 13:38one thing if I was enriched. But it's another
- 13:40thing when we are furnished with what we need
- 13:43to do the job. Like think about it. To be richly
- 13:47furnished in Christ. Concerning his word and
- 13:52concerning the knowledge of truth. Everything
- 13:55you need, Christ has furnished for you to be
- 13:59a faithful witness in the word and the knowledge
- 14:03of truth. You need nothing else but the Holy
- 14:06Spirit and his word. It is by God's grace that
- 14:11we have those who help us to understand some
- 14:13things maybe through other books and writings.
- 14:17Great. But according to this, we don't need anything
- 14:22else. You have everything you need. You've been
- 14:25richly furnished in him concerning his word and
- 14:28the knowledge of truth, concerning all speech
- 14:31and all knowledge. The thing is, do you know
- 14:34and believe that the Holy Spirit will do as he's
- 14:38promised, guide you in all truth? Now, verse
- 14:42six, how do we know that this is true? The truth
- 14:46is here. This is how we know that he's furnished
- 14:49us in all speech and in all knowledge. Even as
- 14:53the testimony, the evidence, the proof about
- 14:57Christ was confirmed in you. How do you know
- 14:59that God has furnished you in all word, in all
- 15:03speech, and in all knowledge? Because the testimony
- 15:06of Christ being crucified and resurrected is
- 15:10confirmed among you. That's how you know. How
- 15:14do I know I'm a believer? He's confirmed it.
- 15:17All of us go through times when we wonder, man,
- 15:20if I was really a believer, would I do something
- 15:22dumb? Yes, you will. We all do it. But he confirms
- 15:27again and again and again. What's the evidence
- 15:30of proof? A changed life. Obedience is the evidence
- 15:34of proof here. Okay? So you have been furnished
- 15:38in all knowledge and all truth. Why? Because
- 15:41the proof of that is Christ in you. Okay? There.
- 15:47Continue, verse 6, so that you are not lacking
- 15:51in any gift. In other words, what Paul is saying
- 15:55is here, because Christ is in you, because the
- 15:57Spirit of God is in you, you lack nothing. Nothing
- 16:01to accomplish the mission. Everything you need
- 16:05for the gospel is there. Now, understanding that,
- 16:09let's keep reading. As you wait for the revealing
- 16:13of our Lord Jesus Christ. So, I stand, when you
- 16:20look at the issue of sensationism versus the
- 16:23continuation of gifts, I stand on John Piper's
- 16:27side on this. It's hard. Concerning some things,
- 16:31you go, okay, I see where I'm a cessationist.
- 16:34A cessationist is one who believes that none
- 16:37of the gifts exist. Unless you're a partial cessationist,
- 16:42that means you believe that some of them do,
- 16:44but not all of them do. Specifically, the miracle
- 16:47gifts, tongues, interpretation of tongues, prophecy,
- 16:51meaning future telling, and miracles, healings.
- 16:56Now, which is kind of weird, because I don't
- 16:59know about you, but if I'm preaching the gospel
- 17:01in some unknown jungle, and a dude is sick, and
- 17:05I go to the Lord and say, like, Lord, this is,
- 17:07I mean, can you heal this guy so his family come
- 17:10to Christ? Or, you don't know. Something like
- 17:14that can happen. So I'm not willing to say definitively
- 17:17that the gifts do not exist. So I stand with
- 17:20John on this. And here's where John and I stand
- 17:23specifically. All gifts are for the gospel, period.
- 17:28That's the end of the discussion. They're not
- 17:31for you to be saying, I have the spirit of God
- 17:35because I speak in tongues and now I'm going
- 17:37to heaven. That is not what the gift is for.
- 17:40The gifts are for the gospel. You can read that
- 17:43in Hebrews chapter two. All gifts are for the
- 17:48gospel, period. How do we know that? Because
- 17:52that's what we're talking about here. So all
- 17:54of these gifts are for you as you wait for the
- 17:59revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now, obviously
- 18:02he's talking to the church in Corinth, but what
- 18:05are they waiting for if Jesus reveals himself
- 18:08while they're there? What's that mean for all
- 18:11of us? Is it only for them and not for us? These
- 18:15are all good questions. That's called metaphysics.
- 18:18Asking questions that can be difficult to answer.
- 18:21Verse 8. And he, meaning Christ, will sustain
- 18:25you, will keep you, will make firm you to the
- 18:29end, guiltless. So there it is. It's continued.
- 18:32Whether you read verse 6 and 7 or verse 8, there's
- 18:36this. Constant communication of the revealing
- 18:40of Christ or the coming of Christ. We know because
- 18:44it's part of what we believe. In the Apostles'
- 18:47Creed, we believe in the second coming of Christ,
- 18:50do we not? So there it is. The second coming
- 18:53of Christ is clearly proclaimed concerning whether
- 18:57gifts exist or not here. Can't have one without
- 19:00the other. And that's the argument among us who
- 19:04do hold that there's gifts, Need to be properly
- 19:08used. Here's another example. Whether you want
- 19:11to see that or not. The teaching of the scripture.
- 19:15Is that a gift? Teaching scripture is a gift.
- 19:19How do we know? Because the scripture says so.
- 19:23We'll get to those in a few weeks. Not, well,
- 19:26a couple months. Okay? I teach you every Sunday.
- 19:30I teach you every Wednesday. That's a spiritual
- 19:32gift. I also prophesy every Sunday and every
- 19:36Wednesday. You're like, what? I foretell. The
- 19:41word prophecy means to foretell the truth. God's
- 19:44given me his word. I foretell the truth of the
- 19:47word of God to you. That's the gift of prophecy.
- 19:51Well, how do we know? Because not everybody can
- 19:52do this. Okay? That's a gift. It's a gift of
- 19:56the spirit by the grace of God upon a very corrupt
- 19:59and broken man. It's his goodness in reflection
- 20:02to what I am apart from him. Now, understanding
- 20:08that there's two particular gifts that are practiced
- 20:12right in front of you every single day. So if
- 20:15those gifts don't exist and the gifts have ceased,
- 20:18I wonder who's teaching. And what's the sense
- 20:21of asking the Lord to guide us in all truth if
- 20:24it's from your own mind anyway? And then you
- 20:27have to give the credit to the school because
- 20:29the school is the one that's taught you all that
- 20:31stuff. Not the spirit. Can't have one without
- 20:35the other. There's my argument. Third principle.
- 20:38The father who is faithful has called us into
- 20:42fellowship with his son, commands his people
- 20:45to be faithful in fellowship with one another
- 20:48by having the mind of Christ. Okay? So, if God
- 20:53is faithful and has called... Called us into
- 20:57fellowship with his son. Which we'll read in
- 21:00a minute. He also commands us to be faithful.
- 21:03As he is in fellowship with one another. And
- 21:06the way we have fellowship with one another.
- 21:08Is to have the mind of Jesus. First Corinthians
- 21:122 .16. For who has understood the mind of the
- 21:16Lord. So as to instruct him. But we have the
- 21:20mind of Christ. You have it. He lives in you.
- 21:25His mind is with you. 1 Corinthians 1, 19 through
- 21:2917. God is faithful. Do you see that? By whom
- 21:35you were called. Isn't that interesting? God,
- 21:39the faithful one, has called you into fellowship
- 21:43with his son. Now, here's the interesting term,
- 21:47the word called here. The word called means to
- 21:50be summoned by a king. So when God calls you,
- 21:54him being king says, come. And what do you do
- 21:58when you come before the king? You kneel. That's
- 22:01the idea here. This is not an option. This is
- 22:04a command. It's implied in the understanding
- 22:07of the word called. And the word called means
- 22:10to be summoned by the king. Now, he has called
- 22:15us. into fellowship with his son, which he puts
- 22:19us into fellowship with his son, Jesus Christ,
- 22:22our master. And as a result of understanding
- 22:25that reality, the scripture here in verse 10
- 22:28says, I appeal to you. I urge you. Someone used
- 22:33the word beg. I wouldn't say beg. I think more
- 22:37the term is, listen, you're going to do this
- 22:41or there's going to be problems. That's what
- 22:45I think he's saying here. He says, I appeal to
- 22:48you brothers by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 22:53So what he's saying is this reality concerning
- 22:56what I'm going to talk to you about is by the
- 23:00name, the authority of Christ, our master. This
- 23:04is him. This is a required obedient act. That's
- 23:08what he means here. That you all agree. This
- 23:11word agree means to be sure and certain of the
- 23:14faith. Agree in what? Agree concerning all things
- 23:18concerning him. His ways. Okay? And that there
- 23:22be no divisions, no dissensions, no damage to
- 23:27the unity among you is what he says here. That's
- 23:30the word divisions. Okay? Now, Understanding
- 23:34that, the reason why is because in order to be
- 23:37in fellowship with the Son and be in fellowship
- 23:40with one another, we must agree. We must keep
- 23:45the unity of the faith in the bond of peace.
- 23:48That's the most important thing here. Then he
- 23:51says, but that you be united. This word united
- 23:55means united completely. And here it is. In the
- 23:59same mind and the same judgment. This word same
- 24:04is the word his. It should be his because it
- 24:08implies immutability. In the original language,
- 24:12when it says the same mind, it's meaning the
- 24:15immutable mind of Christ. I don't know about
- 24:20you, but I'm not immutable. You're not immutable.
- 24:23Your mind is not immutable and neither is mine.
- 24:26But I know his is. So we must be united. In his
- 24:32immutable mind, nos is the word here, means to
- 24:37think like Christ. That's literally what this
- 24:40word means. It's not the same as in Philippians
- 24:44chapter 2, verses 2 and 5, which is froneo. Froneo.
- 24:49That word froneo means to have regard or to set
- 24:53one's mind on. Set your mind on Christ. As he
- 24:58has left you this example to live. That's what
- 25:01chapter 2 of Philippians means. Here, this means
- 25:05that you are to have, you must think like Jesus
- 25:09thinks. Now that makes a lot of sense, doesn't
- 25:12it? Because in order for me to be in fellowship
- 25:15with the Son and be in proper fellowship with
- 25:17one another, we must think like he thinks. And
- 25:21we must have his view. This word judgment means
- 25:26Christ's view or opinion. Now this word opinion
- 25:30is not like you think you have an opinion and
- 25:33I have an opinion. This is not, God doesn't have
- 25:35opinions in the way you think he has opinions.
- 25:40He doesn't go, you know, Joe has an opinion.
- 25:42Oh my goodness. I got to hear this opinion. It's
- 25:46not an opinion like that. It means it's his view.
- 25:50It's the way he thinks. That's the idea here.
- 25:53We must have the same judgment. We must have
- 25:56the same view that Christ has concerning all
- 25:59things, not just some things. So it's interesting
- 26:04when we sit and we read that we are to be united
- 26:07and think like Christ and that we should be having
- 26:11Christ's view concerning things. And this is
- 26:15why he says it, verse 11, for it's been reported
- 26:18to me by Chloe's people. that there is quarreling
- 26:22among you, my brothers. So Chloe and Chloe's
- 26:27people come to Paul. And he says, yo, Paul, we
- 26:31got some issues here. What are they? Well, we've
- 26:35witnessed that people are saying, I follow you
- 26:39and they follow Apollos and they follow Cephas
- 26:42and they follow Christ. And Paul's like, well,
- 26:44I got to fix that. So he rebukes them. Like the
- 26:47entire book of Corinthians or letter of Corinthians
- 26:50is a lot of rebuke because this church has some
- 26:53issues. Okay. Now that's what he says here. What
- 26:57I mean is that each one of you says, he's verified
- 27:02this. I follow Paul or I follow Apollos or I
- 27:07follow Cephas or I follow Christ. And Paul's
- 27:11like, I can see Paul thinking like, what are
- 27:14they thinking? This is not about any of us. It's
- 27:17about Christ and Christ alone. And he clarifies
- 27:20that statement. And this is what he says. He
- 27:23asks a bunch of questions. There's a lot of questions
- 27:25in this chapter. Is Christ divided? No. Was Paul
- 27:30crucified for you? No. That's clear. Or were
- 27:36you baptized in the name of Paul? No. Then why
- 27:40are you claiming that you follow a man and not
- 27:43follow the God of all men? That's Paul's argument
- 27:46here. And what Paul does is he clarifies because
- 27:50in 2 Corinthians 2, you see something very common
- 27:55in Paul's declaration to the Corinthians. He
- 27:58has a clear conscience. And what he does here
- 28:00is he clarifies the truth. Not only does he call
- 28:03them out on their junk and their issue, he rebukes
- 28:07them. Is Christ divided? He then turns around
- 28:11and says, here's what I actually did do. I thank
- 28:14God that I baptized none of you except for Crispus
- 28:17and Gaius, so that no one may say that you were
- 28:20baptized in my name. Because I know these two
- 28:23guys are going to tell the truth. He mentions
- 28:26these two guys. I think it's not only does he
- 28:28mention these two guys, I think it was providential.
- 28:30Not think, I know it was providential that Paul
- 28:33only baptized Crispus and Gaius because God knew
- 28:37beforehand he was going to have to deal with
- 28:39an issue in this church. And then Paul has an
- 28:42epiphany. He's like, oh, wait a minute. I did
- 28:46baptize also the house of Stephanas. And beyond
- 28:49that, I don't know whether I baptized anyone
- 28:51else. What I love about this verse is it makes
- 28:54Paul human. He's a pastor who like, I wish I
- 28:57had a V8 moment, you know? He's like, oh, I forgot.
- 29:01I got to mention this. We're human. Men of God
- 29:05are human. We're going to make mistakes. When
- 29:07we make mistakes, we go, oh, hey, by the way.
- 29:11That's what Paul does here. That's one of the
- 29:13things I love about him. Not only does he wreck
- 29:15people, but he also goes, oh, I forgot. So good.
- 29:20It makes me feel like I can connect to him. It
- 29:22was one of my connecting moments. Oh, he forgets
- 29:25like I do. If you forget the keys, Paul would
- 29:27have forgot them too. Okay? Verse 17. For Christ
- 29:32did not send me to baptize. And here is where
- 29:34Paul is setting a very clear statement, which
- 29:40we'll get to at the end in verse 18 through the
- 29:43end of the chapter. This is a pivotal statement
- 29:46here because he's clarifying why he's come. For
- 29:50Christ did not send me to baptize. Christ doesn't
- 29:54call men to just baptize. He calls us to preach
- 29:58the gospel. What good is baptism if you don't
- 30:03tell them about Jesus? I'm just making people
- 30:06wet. That's his point. If I preach Christ and
- 30:10him crucified and they come to faith, then baptism
- 30:14means something. It's a fruit showing obedience.
- 30:17But if they get baptized thinking that's going
- 30:20to save them, it doesn't do anything but make
- 30:22people wet. For Christ did not send me to baptize
- 30:25but to preach the gospel. And he tells them how
- 30:28he preached the gospel. Not with the words of
- 30:30eloquent wisdom. I didn't make an amazing sermon.
- 30:34Nope. He preached just Christ and him crucified.
- 30:37Lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
- 30:41Here's the power of the gospel. The power of
- 30:44the gospel is not how well one can preach or
- 30:48not preach. It's not how well we become wordsmiths.
- 30:54And Jody knows I'm not a wordsmith. Okay? In
- 30:58reality, it's how well we can clarify the truth
- 31:01of the gospel in its simplicity. And here's the
- 31:04gospel. Christ died on the cross for your sins
- 31:07because you are sinful. And without Christ dying
- 31:10on the cross for your sins, you are destined
- 31:12for God's wrath. God sent his son in propitiation
- 31:17in your place to take away your sin, to shed
- 31:22his blood as a payment for sin, for the wages
- 31:25of sin is death. And on the third day, after
- 31:29he'd been crucified and buried, he rose him from
- 31:33the dead so that we would have victory over death,
- 31:36sin, and the grave. That's the point of the resurrection.
- 31:40Without the resurrection, he's just another man
- 31:43that was crucified on a cross. But he's not just
- 31:46another man. He's the man God who died for you.
- 31:50That's the point. That's the simplicity of the
- 31:53power of the cross. Christ was crucified according
- 31:56to the scriptures. He was buried and rose again
- 31:58on the third day according to the scriptures.
- 32:011 Corinthians 15, which we'll get to in about
- 32:03eight months. It's going to be a while. Probably
- 32:07not eight months, more like six maybe. But that's
- 32:10what we're talking about here. Why is the unity
- 32:13of the faith and the bond of peace? Why should
- 32:16we be striving for fellowship with one another?
- 32:18It's the gospel. The gospel is at stake here.
- 32:21That's what's at stake. And Paul clarifies that
- 32:24with these people. Okay? Now, let's pray and
- 32:28then I'll send you off. Father, I want to thank
- 32:30you so much for your word. Thank you for this
- 32:32wonderful letter to be honor and glory in Jesus'
- 32:35name. Amen.
