- 0:12Hello friends, it is Sean. Here it is a Monday morning and
- 0:17welcome to you to this Bible reading podcast.
- 0:20So great that you have chosen to invite me into your day as your
- 0:24week begins on the 11th of September, a day forever marred
- 0:29by those tragic events. Some poor 22 years ago, yeah.
- 0:35But here we are and the world has seen so many more terrible
- 0:39events and wonderful events and the whole spectrum of life as we
- 0:44continue to live on this planet with the human race and our God
- 0:50who loves us and who communicates with us through His
- 0:53scriptures. And that is why we are here, to
- 0:57frame our daily walk with the eternal God and His message to
- 1:01us. And this week we will conclude
- 1:04this part of Isaiah which talks through a theological reflection
- 1:09or or judgment on the way that has Akaya ruled Judah.
- 1:15And then we will move all the way into the New Testament and
- 1:19begin reading together the book of Acts on Thursday.
- 1:22So this is a good week. So the next three days we will
- 1:26continue here about the story of Hezekiah responding to the
- 1:30threat of the Assyrian Empire knocking on his doorstep, and we
- 1:34will see what Isaiah has to say about the way he responds.
- 1:39So throw away your 21st century mindset.
- 1:43Let's go all the way back to those years before Christ, about
- 1:47700 BC, as we hear this story of ancient empires brushing up
- 1:52against each other, one with the Almighty God on its side and 1
- 1:57without, as we read together Isaiah chapter 37.
- 2:11When King Hezekiah heard their report, he tore his clothes and
- 2:16put on burlap and went into the temple of the Lord.
- 2:19And he sent to like him the palace administrator Shebner,
- 2:22the court secretary, and the leading priests, all dressed in
- 2:26burlap to the prophet Isaiah, son of Amos.
- 2:30They told him this is what King Hezekiah says.
- 2:34Today is a day of trouble, insults and disgrace.
- 2:38It is like when a child is ready to be born, but the mother has
- 2:41no strength to deliver the baby. But perhaps the Lord your God
- 2:46has heard the Assyrian chief of staff sent by the king to defy
- 2:50the living God and will punish him for his words.
- 2:54I'll pray for those of us who were left after King Hezekiah's
- 2:59officials delivered the King's message to Isaiah, the prophet
- 3:02replied. Say to your master, this is what
- 3:06the Lord says. Do not be disturbed by this
- 3:10blasphemous speech against me from the Assyrian King's
- 3:13messengers. Listen, I myself will move
- 3:17against him and the king will receive a message that he is
- 3:21needed at home, so he will return to his land.
- 3:25Meanwhile, the Assyrian chief of staff left Jerusalem and went to
- 3:29consult the King of Assyria, who had left Lakish and was
- 3:33attacking Libna. Soon afterward, King Senacharab
- 3:38received word that King Tahaka of Ethiopia was leading an army
- 3:44to fight against him. Before leaving to meet the
- 3:47attack, he sent messages back to Hezekiah in Jerusalem with this
- 3:52message. This message is for King
- 3:55Hezekiah of Judah. Don't let your God in whom you
- 4:00trust, deceive you with promises that Jerusalem will not be
- 4:05captured by the king of Assyria. You know perfectly well what the
- 4:09kings of Assyria have done. Wherever they have gone, they
- 4:13have completely destroyed everyone who stood in their way.
- 4:17Why should you be any different? Have the gods of other nations
- 4:21rescued them? Such nations as Gozan, Haran,
- 4:25Rezaf, and the people of Eden? Who would tell Assa my
- 4:31predecessors destroyed them all. What happened to the king of
- 4:35Hammeth and the king of Arpad? What happened to the kings of
- 4:40Sefavayem, Henna and Eva? After Hezekiah received the
- 4:46letter from the messengers and read it, he went up to the
- 4:48Lord's temple and spread it out before the Lord.
- 4:52And Hezekiah prayed this prayer before the Lord, O Lord of
- 4:57Heaven's armies, God of Israel, you are enthroned between the
- 5:02mighty cherubim. You alone are God of all the
- 5:06kingdoms of the earth. You alone created the heavens
- 5:10and the earth. Bend down, O Lord, and listen.
- 5:15Open your eyes, O Lord, and see. Listen to Senna cherubs, words
- 5:20of defiance against the living God.
- 5:24It is true, Lord, that the kings of Assyria have destroyed all
- 5:28these nations, and they have thrown the gods of these nations
- 5:32into the fire and burned them. But of course the Assyrians
- 5:37could destroy them. They were not gods at all, only
- 5:40idols of wood and stone shaped by human hands.
- 5:44Now, O Lord, our God rescue us from His power.
- 5:49Then all the kingdoms of the earth will know that you alone,
- 5:54O Lord, are God. Then Isaiah son of Amos sent
- 6:01this message to Hezekiah. This is what the Lord, the God
- 6:05of Israel says. Because you prayed about King
- 6:09sent a cherub of Assyria, The Lord has spoken this word
- 6:12against him. The virgin daughter of Zion
- 6:16despises you and laughs at you. The daughter of Jerusalem shakes
- 6:21her head in derision as you flee.
- 6:24Whom have you been defying and ridiculing?
- 6:27Against whom did you raise your voice?
- 6:31At whom did you look with such haughty eyes?
- 6:34It was the Holy One of Israel. By your messengers you have
- 6:39defied the Lord, you have said. With my Chariots I have
- 6:44conquered the highest mountains, yes, the remotest peaks of
- 6:48Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest
- 6:50Cedars and its finest Cypress trees.
- 6:53I have reached its farthest heights and explored its deepest
- 6:57forests. I have dug wells in many foreign
- 7:01lands and refreshed myself with their water.
- 7:04With the sole of my foot I stopped up all the rivers of
- 7:08Egypt. But have you not heard?
- 7:12I decided this long ago. Long ago I planned it, and now
- 7:18I'm making it happen. I planned for you to crush
- 7:21fortified cities into heaps of rubble.
- 7:24That is why their people have so little power, and they're so
- 7:27frightened and confused. They are as weak as grass, as
- 7:32easily trampled as tender green shoots.
- 7:35They are like grass sprouting on a housetop, scorched before it
- 7:39can grow lush and tall. But I know you well, where you
- 7:44stay and when you come and go. I know the way you have raged
- 7:48against me. And because of your raging
- 7:51against me and your arrogance, which I've heard from myself, I
- 7:55will put a hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth.
- 8:01I will make you return by the same Rd. on which you came.
- 8:06Then, as I said to Hezekiah, here is the proof that what I
- 8:10say is true. This year you will eat only what
- 8:15grows up by itself, and next year you will eat what springs
- 8:19up from that. But in the third year you will
- 8:23plant crops and harvest them. You will tend vineyards and eat
- 8:27their fruit. And you who are left in Judah,
- 8:30who have escaped the ravages of the siege, will put roots down
- 8:34in your own soil and grow up and flourish.
- 8:39For a remnant of my people will spread out from Jerusalem, a
- 8:43group of survivors from Mount Zion.
- 8:46The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven's armies will
- 8:49make this happen. And this is what the Lord says
- 8:52about the king of Assyria. His armies will not enter
- 8:57Jerusalem. They will not even shoot an
- 9:00arrow at it. They will not March outside its
- 9:03gates with their Shields, nor build banks of earth against its
- 9:07walls. The king will return to his own
- 9:10country by the same Rd. on which he came.
- 9:13He will not enter this city, says the Lord.
- 9:17For my own honor and for the sake of my servant David, I will
- 9:21defend this city and protect it. That night, the Angel of the
- 9:27Lord went out to the Assyrian camp and killed 185,000 Assyrian
- 9:33soldiers. When the surviving Assyrians
- 9:36woke up the next morning, they found corpses everywhere.
- 9:41Then King Senna Cherub of Assyria broke camp and returned
- 9:45to his own land. He went home to his capital of
- 9:49Nineveh and stayed there. One day, while he was
- 9:53worshipping in the temple of his God Nisrok, his son Zadramalek
- 9:58and Sharaza killed him with their swords.
- 10:01They then escaped to the land of Ararat and another son, as a
- 10:06harden, became the next king of Assyria.
- 10:20You're in charge, Lord. You are sovereign.
- 10:24There is nothing anyone can say or do that can possibly diminish
- 10:29you, For you are larger and greater than our universe and
- 10:33everything in it. And we worship You, our almighty
- 10:39God, our powerful Lord. And we thank you that your power
- 10:44is not one that you flex for your own sake, that your power
- 10:49is such, that you use it to draw us back to you and make your
- 10:54love complete through Jesus. We love you and we thank you,
- 11:01and we worship you. And it's in His name that we
- 11:05pray. Amen SMS Akshay.
