- 0:06Speaker 1: Welcome into Northside Territory Foul Territory Networks Cubs Podcast. I'm
- 0:09Speaker 1: Sade Sharma with my partner Patrick Mooney. We are your
- 0:13Speaker 1: Cubs beat writers over at the Athletic Patrick, it is
- 0:16Speaker 1: time for a mail bag episode. Let's not waste any time.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Let's get right to it. First question is I don't
- 0:26Speaker 1: think that's actually from Tyler Madson. Oh it is, it
- 0:29Speaker 1: is from Tyler Matson. That's a different name. Who who's
- 0:31Speaker 1: our Who's our regular guy, Tyler Dershall? Yeah, Dershall. Okay,
- 0:37Speaker 1: I was gonna say Tyler didn't didn't message in. We didn't.
- 0:42Speaker 1: We actually didn't get a question from our regular Tyler.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Uh so a different Tyler has stepped in and given
- 0:48Speaker 1: a given us a question. At this point, what is
- 0:51Speaker 1: the biggest thing standing between the Cubs and a legitimate
- 0:55Speaker 1: World series run? The bullpen, the lack of a true ace,
- 1:00Speaker 1: or that the offense is too dependent on a handful
- 1:03Speaker 1: of players who aren't performing. My quick answer is, if
- 1:10Speaker 1: this team were healthy, I would say it's Oh geez,
- 1:17Speaker 1: I think it's it's I'll reset it's it's the fact
- 1:22Speaker 1: that they're not healthy. That's what's standing between the Cubs
- 1:25Speaker 1: in a legitimate World Series run, I think, and I
- 1:28Speaker 1: think it is because the rotation is so dinged up
- 1:32Speaker 1: and you lost Kate Horton and Justin Steele had a setback,
- 1:37Speaker 1: and Edward Cabrera hasn't been what we thought he would
- 1:40Speaker 1: be and Matthew Boyd isn't around much this season so far.
- 1:46Speaker 1: That has depleted the bullpen, which has led to these
- 1:49Speaker 1: two major issues on the with the pitching staff, bullpen
- 1:52Speaker 1: and starting rotation. I again, I know that the offense
- 1:55Speaker 1: is frustrating. I think you know by the time the
- 1:58Speaker 1: season is wrapped up going to be a solid offense
- 2:01Speaker 1: and they could get you and it would be an
- 2:03Speaker 1: offense that could win you a World Series. I just
- 2:05Speaker 1: think the pitching. It's pitching, and it's the injuries. So
- 2:09Speaker 1: I think it's all linked because of the rotation injuries.
- 2:12Speaker 1: You have such a weak bullpen, but there's also injuries
- 2:15Speaker 1: in the bullpen, Poalencia being prime candidate there.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Tyler I asked Craig council version of this question the
- 2:23Speaker 2: other day of like, as you know your team looks
- 2:26Speaker 2: to start stacking series wins again, are you more concerned
- 2:30Speaker 2: about like the state of the pitching staff or the
- 2:35Speaker 2: underperformance of the lineup, and he said, it's not an
- 2:38Speaker 2: either or thing and taking this one step further of
- 2:42Speaker 2: it because I was asking more about just like kind
- 2:46Speaker 2: of staying in the race, you maybe you know, getting
- 2:51Speaker 2: back realistically into a division race, just taking some of
- 2:54Speaker 2: the heat off of the clubhouse, the front office. But
- 2:59Speaker 2: this is kind of that next level of a legitimate
- 3:02Speaker 2: World Series run. I mean, you need all of that
- 3:06Speaker 2: to win a World Series. I mean to play until
- 3:08Speaker 2: late October, sometimes even early November if necessary. You need
- 3:15Speaker 2: just all of that. We saw and I think one
- 3:19Speaker 2: of the disappointments of this first half of the season
- 3:22Speaker 2: is the Cubs severely reducing their odds of a first
- 3:27Speaker 2: round by which is what Jed Hoyer talked about at
- 3:30Speaker 2: wrigley Field recently in terms of aggressiveness at the trade deadline.
- 3:34Speaker 2: That last year, the Cubs had a good season, but
- 3:38Speaker 2: they were stuck in the wildcard round, which they won,
- 3:41Speaker 2: which they delivered an electric atmosphere to Wrigley Field, but
- 3:46Speaker 2: they expended so much energy and effort that they didn't
- 3:49Speaker 2: have much left for the start of that Brewers series
- 3:52Speaker 2: of Matthew Boyd pitching on three days rest against a
- 3:57Speaker 2: Brewers team that was able to line everything up for
- 4:00Speaker 2: that series. You know, they got the pitching matchups they wanted,
- 4:05Speaker 2: They had a relatively rested, healthy pitching staff. So it's
- 4:09Speaker 2: almost like you're down one at the start of that
- 4:14Speaker 2: and you don't have home field advantage in a series
- 4:18Speaker 2: in which the home team won all five games.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I just think pitching is like, I don't know
- 4:24Speaker 1: how you I think they have to upgrade that at
- 4:27Speaker 1: the deadline. I think, yeah, it has become such an
- 4:29Speaker 1: obvious need. That's the you know, now that you're not
- 4:34Speaker 1: We'll see where they get in the division if they
- 4:35Speaker 1: can make this a division race before the deadline. Right now,
- 4:38Speaker 1: it feels like division is going to be hard to
- 4:40Speaker 1: get back into. Uh. But regardless of whether it's a
- 4:45Speaker 1: division race or wildcard race, bullpen is the spot that
- 4:48Speaker 1: I think that they're going to be really focused on
- 4:50Speaker 1: because it's really hard to get starting pitching at the deadline,
- 4:53Speaker 1: and now that they're don't, like you said, those World
- 4:55Speaker 1: Series odds like aren't what they want them to be.
- 5:00Speaker 1: They won't go all out for that a starting pitcher.
- 5:03Speaker 1: But maybe things change, Maybe maybe there's a different feeling
- 5:09Speaker 1: in a month, we'll we'll see where they are, all right,
- 5:14Speaker 1: Next question for Mike mclewee. With the Cubs clearly eyeing
- 5:19Speaker 1: a wildcard spot and not the division, they won't part
- 5:22Speaker 1: with major prospects like Matt Shaw to bolster their pitching. Right, Okay,
- 5:28Speaker 1: let's let's make this our our fan duel Daily Dingers segment.
- 5:36Speaker 1: We'll talk about Matt Shaw. Okay, Well, first of all,
- 5:43Speaker 1: you know, Matt Shaw is not a prospect, right, we
- 5:46Speaker 1: should call him that. He is. He's a big leaguer
- 5:50Speaker 1: and he's he's part of this team. Mike, Yeah, I
- 5:55Speaker 1: think I would be surprised if Matt Shaw's some one
- 6:00Speaker 1: that you're gonna talk about as a potential piece that
- 6:06Speaker 1: you'd move. I just don't think that they're looking to
- 6:10Speaker 1: do that right now. And Patrick, you were there the
- 6:13Speaker 1: other day when when Craig Counsel said, you know, we're
- 6:16Speaker 1: going to see more playing time for Matt Shaw. Not
- 6:21Speaker 1: not certainly not someone that you'd consider being on the
- 6:26Speaker 1: trade block.
- 6:28Speaker 2: I mean, I wouldn't rule it out. His name will
- 6:30Speaker 2: almost certainly come up, and the Cubs aren't really in
- 6:34Speaker 2: a position to dismiss any idea out of hand. No
- 6:39Speaker 2: one is untouchable, but at this particular moment, Greig Council
- 6:45Speaker 2: says they're going to feature Matt Shaw more prominently. Their
- 6:51Speaker 2: models have placed a very high value on Shaw. Granted
- 6:57Speaker 2: that was I'm assuming more as an every day third
- 7:00Speaker 2: basement not as this like super utility player slash part
- 7:05Speaker 2: time right fielder, but I think you'd have to consider it.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I just have a hard time seeing the Cubs moving him,
- 7:19Speaker 2: knowing how much they value young talent, flexibility and kind
- 7:24Speaker 2: of what they've invested in Shaw thus far. And we
- 7:30Speaker 2: kind of get the sense of the Cubs have sort
- 7:32Speaker 2: of lowered their sites already that they would say they're
- 7:37Speaker 2: not that far along in the process anyways, that there's
- 7:39Speaker 2: still a lot of time to go, which is true,
- 7:42Speaker 2: but clearly the tone went from this is like a
- 7:48Speaker 2: World Series contender, legit, when they're ripping off ten game
- 7:52Speaker 2: winning streaks. You have to honor that to now it's
- 7:54Speaker 2: like who's pitching in a couple of days? Like do
- 7:57Speaker 2: we have enough bodies to kind of get through this?
- 8:00Speaker 2: And if you're sort of if that's the aisle you're
- 8:03Speaker 2: shopping in, you're less likely to be trading a Matt.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Shaw yeah, Matt Shaw. I think they need to right
- 8:11Speaker 1: now strike a balance between winning now and making sure
- 8:17Speaker 1: you have this nice core you know, that you can
- 8:21Speaker 1: keep together for the future. They have two impending free
- 8:23Speaker 1: agents in the lineup in the corner outfield spots. Yeah,
- 8:29Speaker 1: is Matt Shaw's value, you know, highest in right field
- 8:34Speaker 1: or left field or something like that. No, it would
- 8:36Speaker 1: be at second or third base. If someone blows you
- 8:40Speaker 1: away with the trade offer, you have to listen. Those
- 8:45Speaker 1: things don't happen usually during the season, as I think
- 8:51Speaker 1: it would be something you'd maybe revisit in the off
- 8:53Speaker 1: season and see what kind of maneuverings you can pull off.
- 8:57Speaker 1: As far as you know, there's a potential hole with
- 9:02Speaker 1: Sayah and haf both going leaving in free agency. Still,
- 9:07Speaker 1: if someone offers you something that makes a lot of
- 9:09Speaker 1: sense and they really want Matt Shaw to be their
- 9:13Speaker 1: future second basement, their future third baseman, however they view them,
- 9:18Speaker 1: I think you talk about it, but I don't think
- 9:19Speaker 1: that's something that they're going to be talking about right now.
- 9:23Speaker 1: It just doesn't seem like it makes the most sense.
- 9:27Speaker 1: I'd be a little surprised by that. All right. Northside

- 10:14Speaker 3: Gambling problem call or text one eight hundred gambler.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Okay, so that's uh, that's question number three here is
- 10:26Speaker 1: what will the Cubs do to ramp up internal pitching development,
- 10:30Speaker 1: especially as it relates to the bullpen. That's from blue
- 10:32Speaker 1: line theology. They've already started to try and tweak things internally.
- 10:40Speaker 1: But before we get to that, I want to say,
- 10:42Speaker 1: like Jed is clearly throwing the Jed in the front office,
- 10:47Speaker 1: I should say they're they're trying to get as much
- 10:49Speaker 1: pitching in the system right now. They're picking up every
- 10:53Speaker 1: type of DFAID player, random player. There's These are not
- 10:57Speaker 1: household names that they're picking up right now. They're not
- 11:03Speaker 1: game breaking bullpen names, but they they're guys with good stuff.
- 11:07Speaker 1: I think that they're intrigued by and hoping to tweak.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I have not learned their names yet because they have
- 11:15Speaker 1: not come up to the big league, so I can't
- 11:16Speaker 1: tell you everyone that they've picked up. But there's there's
- 11:19Speaker 1: been a lot of small moves traded for that. They
- 11:23Speaker 1: had a recent trade with the Mariners for cash considerations.
- 11:28Speaker 1: I believe for a reliever. There's a lot of guys
- 11:33Speaker 1: like that that they're they're trying to see, like what sticks.
- 11:37Speaker 1: And I think maybe one or two of these guys
- 11:40Speaker 1: will will come up to the big leagues at some
- 11:42Speaker 1: point if they figure something out. There were bigger names,
- 11:46Speaker 1: right Liam Hendricks was one, Aaron Bummer is another. We
- 11:51Speaker 1: haven't heard much about them since because they're trying to
- 11:54Speaker 1: get right in Arizona, but they're doing everything they can
- 11:59Speaker 1: to get names in there. And then Patrick, we we've
- 12:01Speaker 1: talked about this internal development is so important, Uh they
- 12:06Speaker 1: promoted Tyler Zambro to VP of pitching. H they've get there.
- 12:12Speaker 1: There was Craig Breslow left for the Red Sox. You
- 12:18Speaker 1: know things. The velocity development wasn't there the past couple
- 12:22Speaker 1: of years as it had been under Breslo. They've pushed
- 12:26Speaker 1: that again. There's still a lot of injuries. That's what
- 12:29Speaker 1: comes when you push velocity. Uh. But are there names
- 12:34Speaker 1: popping as much? I wouldn't say that. Is it a
- 12:37Speaker 1: complete disaster in the system right now? I wouldn't say
- 12:41Speaker 1: that either. There's just a lot more bats in this
- 12:44Speaker 1: system than there is pitching. When you give me your thoughts,
- 12:49Speaker 1: I'll chere a couple names once once you once you, uh,
- 12:55Speaker 1: share your thoughts on where this team is at with
- 12:58Speaker 1: pitching development.
- 13:00Speaker 2: I will say that they've acknowledged it's been a problem.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Like you, I really don't hear a whole lot of
- 13:07Speaker 2: like we have this figured out. They point in individual
- 13:11Speaker 2: success stories. They throw a lot of kind of volume
- 13:16Speaker 2: at the problem. Like I wondn't be surprised if one
- 13:19Speaker 2: of these random names that we've seen on announcing smaller transactions,
- 13:27Speaker 2: one of them could wind up helping this year. I
- 13:30Speaker 2: have no idea who that would be or why it
- 13:33Speaker 2: would happen. I guess they phil Maton is sort of
- 13:36Speaker 2: proving the Cub's point that they were trying to make
- 13:38Speaker 2: for years that throwing money at the bullpen isn't always
- 13:43Speaker 2: the answer. I'm also curious to see, like how they
- 13:47Speaker 2: approach the draft this year, Like do they go heavier
- 13:52Speaker 2: on pitching, or do they kind of lean on a
- 13:55Speaker 2: strength that they have and just kind of load up
- 13:58Speaker 2: on hitting and just say, like, we don't, like no
- 14:01Speaker 2: one really knows what's going on with pitching or most
- 14:04Speaker 2: organizations don't. Let's just maybe pick over the leftovers and
- 14:08Speaker 2: the second half, second chance guys, and you know it
- 14:15Speaker 2: won't be internal pitching as much as they're going to
- 14:19Speaker 2: have to spend this offseason on the rotation. I mean,
- 14:22Speaker 2: when you look at the amount of guys are about
- 14:25Speaker 2: to come free agents. Maybe the Edward Cabrera trade will
- 14:28Speaker 2: look different by the end of the year, but right
- 14:30Speaker 2: now he served a question mark. We'll see if Ben
- 14:32Speaker 2: Brown can finish this year healthy and effective. We think
- 14:40Speaker 2: Justin Steel will come back this year, but that's not
- 14:44Speaker 2: necessarily guaranteed. How much can you count on him in
- 14:49Speaker 2: twenty seven, But I mean blue line theology here kind
- 14:53Speaker 2: of ask the question that they've been debating really since
- 14:57Speaker 2: the start of Theo's era in Chicago.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm looking at this. They added a lot of
- 15:06Speaker 1: names to the forty man roster. Jasper Zuluetas from that's
- 15:11Speaker 1: the guy from the Mariners, and then you have guys
- 15:14Speaker 1: like Christian Roa, Luis Peralta, Eduard, Neil Nunez, Antoine Kelly,
- 15:20Speaker 1: and Tyler Ferguson who had a brief cup of coffee
- 15:23Speaker 1: the other day with the team. Those those guys have
- 15:28Speaker 1: all been added since the season, since the season ended
- 15:31Speaker 1: or season started. Uh, so that they're they're doing their
- 15:36Speaker 1: best to try and find some guys with talent that
- 15:39Speaker 1: they hope can they can tweak and eventually be a
- 15:42Speaker 1: part of this bullpen. I wouldn't expect someone to become
- 15:46Speaker 1: the next Brad Keller, but I also wouldn't rule out
- 15:49Speaker 1: someone impacting this bullpen out of that group of names
- 15:53Speaker 1: by the end of the season. Two names that I heard,
- 15:56Speaker 1: I don't know if they're like. Vince Riley is a
- 15:59Speaker 1: guy who's a little older. He has really good numbers
- 16:03Speaker 1: in the Miners. I believe he just got promoted from
- 16:06Speaker 1: Double A to triple A. The Cubs like him, they
- 16:10Speaker 1: think he's good. Can he help the team this season? Well,
- 16:13Speaker 1: he's a triple A now, so maybe. And then Marino Santi,
- 16:18Speaker 1: I believe is his name. I should double check that. Yes,
- 16:22Speaker 1: Marino Santi, he's a double A. Both these guys have
- 16:29Speaker 1: good numbers. Their stuff is ticked up this year. They
- 16:33Speaker 1: look good. They believe they can help out of the
- 16:35Speaker 1: bullpen this year. That's hard to say. Like young guys,
- 16:39Speaker 1: sometimes it takes a little while for everything to click
- 16:42Speaker 1: at the highest level. We'll see they know they have
- 16:46Speaker 1: I think you nailed it with They have acknowledged the problem.
- 16:49Speaker 1: They are not unaware. They are working on it. Whether
- 16:52Speaker 1: they get it right. You know, this is an imperfect science.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Every team thinks they they're on the verge of figuring
- 16:59Speaker 1: something out. And uh, we'll see if the Cubs actually
- 17:02Speaker 1: have and and if they can get this right. And
- 17:06Speaker 1: you made a great point about the draft. I heard
- 17:08Speaker 1: the same from someone talking to them. I was like, so,
- 17:10Speaker 1: you guys gonna go heavy on pitching this year, and
- 17:13Speaker 1: and it was kind of maybe or maybe we just
- 17:15Speaker 1: double down on what we know. Uh, and you know,
- 17:18Speaker 1: they do have a lot of position players. I gotta
- 17:21Speaker 1: give them credit. There's there's more breaking out this year
- 17:23Speaker 1: than I expected. It's been a really solid year in
- 17:26Speaker 1: that in that sense for the system. All right, ed
- 17:30Speaker 1: Helynski with the question every Cubs fan has right now, how,
- 17:36Speaker 1: if possible, can the Cubs be fixed rather quickly? Look,
- 17:40Speaker 1: I kind of answered this before with what's the biggest
- 17:43Speaker 1: issue with the first question, it's getting healthy. It's getting healthy,
- 17:49Speaker 1: I think is one. Maybe that's not quickly. Here's here's
- 17:53Speaker 1: the quick answer, the quick the quick fix, and the
- 17:56Speaker 1: quick answer. Offense gets red hot and carries the team
- 18:00Speaker 1: for a month and gets them to where they're, you know,
- 18:03Speaker 1: fifteen games above five hundred, and they can coast the
- 18:06Speaker 1: rest of the way in the sense of, like just
- 18:07Speaker 1: play five hundred. The whole thing about going twenty and
- 18:10Speaker 1: three was you just need to play five hundred the
- 18:13Speaker 1: rest of the way and you have a wild card
- 18:15Speaker 1: spot in all likelihood. And they didn't, right, They completely
- 18:20Speaker 1: collapsed and they gave up that huge, you know, above
- 18:25Speaker 1: five hundred gain that they've built up, and now they're
- 18:29Speaker 1: like kind of like playing catch up and they need
- 18:32Speaker 1: to rebuild that gap. We'll see if they can. I
- 18:36Speaker 1: think that's the way. It's Bregmant hitting, it's Ian Happ
- 18:41Speaker 1: getting hot again and Stansby Swanson and Nico Horner figuring
- 18:44Speaker 1: things out guys like that, and the offense is being
- 18:47Speaker 1: red hot and carrying them tw wins. Because I don't
- 18:50Speaker 1: think the pitching is going to be quickly solved.
- 18:54Speaker 2: No, and Council sort of alluded to this the other day.
- 18:56Speaker 2: I want to say, he mentioned something like, you know,
- 19:02Speaker 2: you focus on the bullpen or this matchup or that
- 19:05Speaker 2: at bat, like the offense has to give them more
- 19:08Speaker 2: breathing room, Like expecting this bullpen to sort of be
- 19:15Speaker 2: almost perfect. Is it's just not just not realistic. Like
- 19:20Speaker 2: you know, maybe if you're like that Padres bullpen last
- 19:26Speaker 2: October and like really leaning on heard like that's your
- 19:28Speaker 2: strength and you lean into it and you've you've made
- 19:31Speaker 2: some major moves to build like a super bullpen. Sure
- 19:35Speaker 2: that's not how this Cups team was built. I mean
- 19:39Speaker 2: they don't think those are good investments. They poured so
- 19:43Speaker 2: many resources into this group of position players, like they
- 19:47Speaker 2: just have to be good, period.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, they need to. The guys that they paid
- 19:54Speaker 1: need to step up and perform. I think that's the
- 19:57Speaker 1: biggest thing they know that. I think it's obvious and
- 20:00Speaker 1: I think I wouldn't be shocked if it happens either.
- 20:04Speaker 1: I think the offense can get hot well, whether it's
- 20:06Speaker 1: enough to carry them to a bunch of wins, that's
- 20:09Speaker 1: where my question really is, because they could just start
- 20:13Speaker 1: losing games eight to seven. You know, we could see
- 20:17Speaker 1: a lot of high scoring losses and that that could
- 20:21Speaker 1: be very frustrating, and I understand that, but it could
- 20:24Speaker 1: just be the reality they're faced with. I really do
- 20:26Speaker 1: feel like we're at the point where we've been waiting
- 20:29Speaker 1: for the pitching to We've been seeing like signs and like, oh,
- 20:32Speaker 1: this is this is the moment. No, this is the moment.
- 20:34Speaker 1: I think we're there. Like with Palencia out, the rotation
- 20:38Speaker 1: really banged up, this could be the moment where we
- 20:41Speaker 1: start to see the pitching really become an issue and
