- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And the multitudes that went before and
- 0:04Speaker 1: that followed cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Hosanna in the highest. Matthew 21.9 My Lord, I know
- 0:20Speaker 1: that you have called me to be a great leader
- 0:22Speaker 1: amongst your people. As you begin to evaluate my life,
- 0:27Speaker 1: give me the perspective and posture of Jesus. Help me
- 0:33Speaker 1: to be confident that I get to reveal that you've
- 0:36Speaker 1: called me to greater things. When the weight of leadership
- 0:41Speaker 1: tries to get me to shift from my identity, I
- 0:45Speaker 1: will stand steadfast like the colt in today's story. I
- 0:50Speaker 1: will remain calm in my resolve to unapologetically be me
- 0:55Speaker 1: and lead how you've created me. As I move in
- 0:59Speaker 1: your presence, Help me to recognize my season. Help me
- 1:05Speaker 1: to remain faithful, even when it's time for me to
- 1:08Speaker 1: step out and live out the mission for my life.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Like Jesus, hide me until it's my time to accelerate
- 1:17Speaker 1: and elevate. For it is in the quiet and obscure
- 1:20Speaker 1: moments that you are building my character and integrity, so
- 1:26Speaker 1: that when I step into my calling, and I'm forced
- 1:30Speaker 1: to carry my cross, I won't buckle under the weight
- 1:34Speaker 1: of the responsibility. As I begin my triumphal entry into
- 1:39Speaker 1: my purpose, I will look to you, Jesus, to see
- 1:43Speaker 1: me through. In Jesus' name.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Amen.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Listening to these daily prayers strengthens your relationship with God.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Continue hearing from the Lord by listening to today's.
- 1:59Speaker 3: The Triumphal Entry In our last story, we learned about
- 2:15Speaker 3: the silent faith of Zacchaeus and the loud faith of Bartimaeus.
- 2:20Speaker 4: Both men were held back by sin or misfortune. However,
- 2:24Speaker 4: everything changed for them when they came in contact with Jesus.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Zacchaeus used his riches to feed the poor and destitute.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Bartimaeus was blind, but had his sight restored. They were
- 2:35Speaker 4: both examples of Jesus' power to change lives. Now we
- 2:40Speaker 4: gaze upon the beginning of the end. The final week
- 2:43Speaker 4: of Jesus' life begins. Although it begins with cheers, it
- 2:47Speaker 4: will soon turn into tears. Inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of The
- 2:57Speaker 2: Bible in a Year. I'm so glad that you have
- 3:00Speaker 2: joined us in our journey with Jesus through the Bible.
- 3:04Speaker 2: In our last episode, we heard how the Lord brought
- 3:07Speaker 2: healing and restoration to two different men who had both
- 3:11Speaker 2: lived on the outskirts of society. Their encounters with the
- 3:14Speaker 2: Son of God changed them forever and opened up a
- 3:17Speaker 2: new life for them. Today we'll hear how Jesus fulfills
- 3:21Speaker 2: an ancient prophecy about the Messiah. entering into Jerusalem not
- 3:25Speaker 2: as a king at war, but as one who comes
- 3:28Speaker 2: in to bring peace. The enthusiastic crowd caught up in
- 3:32Speaker 2: the moment will worship and praise the one who would
- 3:34Speaker 2: soon be led to the cross to die for our sins.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Let's hear today's reading from God's Word.
- 3:42Speaker 4: It was late, and Jesus was enjoying the company of
- 3:45Speaker 4: Lazarus and his family. Laughter flowed endlessly into the night.
- 3:50Speaker 4: The disciples and Jesus lounged at the table as Lazarus
- 3:53Speaker 4: retold the story of his death again. The Lord smiled
- 3:57Speaker 4: and looked around the room. His disciples, his friends. He
- 4:02Speaker 4: loved them dearly and was joyful to see God work
- 4:05Speaker 4: and move in their lives. He knew that hard times
- 4:08Speaker 4: were ahead, but he was confident that they all would
- 4:11Speaker 4: be steadfast.
- 4:13Speaker 2: All except one.
- 4:15Speaker 4: Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, lingered at the corner
- 4:18Speaker 4: of the tables. Outwardly he was charming and witty, but
- 4:22Speaker 4: Jesus knew what truly dwelled deep within his heart. As
- 4:26Speaker 4: the night went on, Mary, the sister of Lazarus, emerged
- 4:29Speaker 4: from the back of the house. She was carrying a
- 4:31Speaker 4: large jug of ointment made from pure spikenard. She knelt
- 4:35Speaker 4: at Jesus' feet and began to anoint his feet and
- 4:39Speaker 4: head with the oil. The smell of the spikenard filled
- 4:42Speaker 4: the room. Everyone in the room was unsteady. Spikenard was
- 4:46Speaker 4: an expensive ointment used for a very specific purpose.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Burial.
- 4:51Speaker 4: The disciples and other guests watched in awe as Mary
- 4:54Speaker 4: anointed Jesus. The ointment was expensive and no doubt left
- 4:58Speaker 4: over from Lazarus's burial. But more than the ointment itself,
- 5:02Speaker 4: Mary was worshiping at the feet of Jesus. However, Judas
- 5:07Speaker 4: did not find the gesture sweet. All he saw was
- 5:10Speaker 4: money being wasted. What a terrible waste, Judas blurted out.
- 5:16Speaker 4: All the disciples darted their eyes toward him. Judas, realizing
- 5:20Speaker 4: he had just interrupted a holy moment, sought to recover himself. Well,
- 5:24Speaker 4: we should save it and sell it to give the
- 5:27Speaker 4: money to the poor. Jesus looked at Judas. He knew
- 5:32Speaker 4: that the poor was the last thing he had on
- 5:34Speaker 4: his mind. Jesus smiled at Mary, then spoke to Judas, saying,
- 5:39Speaker 4: Do not harass her, Judas. Allow her to keep the
- 5:42Speaker 4: rest of the spikenard for my burial. for the poor
- 5:45Speaker 4: will always be among you. I, however, will not. Judas
- 5:51Speaker 4: shrunk back in embarrassment, and Mary bowed and then left
- 5:55Speaker 4: with the rest of the ointment. The disciples were too
- 5:57Speaker 4: ignorant at the time to truly understand what Jesus meant.
- 6:01Speaker 4: His time was approaching. The next day Jesus drew near
- 6:05Speaker 4: to Jerusalem. The Passover was drawing near, and the time
- 6:09Speaker 4: of Jesus' great sacrifice was at hand. Jesus sat with
- 6:12Speaker 4: his disciples at the Mount of Olives. There he overlooked
- 6:16Speaker 4: the city. He watched over the sea of faces below.
- 6:20Speaker 4: People from all over the world had come to worship
- 6:22Speaker 4: during the Passover. He drew a deep breath and looked
- 6:25Speaker 4: to heaven. It is time, he whispered. Jesus stood to
- 6:29Speaker 4: his feet and walked to Peter, James, and John. My friends,
- 6:34Speaker 4: I have a special task for you. Jesus smiled, and
- 6:37Speaker 4: the disciples chuckled. Usually that meant Jesus was going to
- 6:41Speaker 4: ask them to do something absurd. They were excited at
- 6:44Speaker 4: the opportunity. Go into the village at the bottom of
- 6:47Speaker 4: the hill. When you enter it, you will find a
- 6:49Speaker 4: colt tied up with its mother. It will be unruly
- 6:53Speaker 4: and dangerous. I want you to take it for me.
- 6:56Speaker 4: If anyone asks why you are taking the donkey, simply say,
- 7:00Speaker 4: The Lord has need of it. The three men did
- 7:03Speaker 4: as Jesus asked. The colt jolted its neck back when
- 7:06Speaker 4: the disciples tried to mount it. It flailed its hind
- 7:09Speaker 4: legs and kicked back. For nearly three miles, the colt
- 7:12Speaker 4: dragged its feet stubbornly into the ground. Peter was nearly
- 7:16Speaker 4: kicked in the head four times, and James was spat
- 7:19Speaker 4: on twice. The colt was truly stubborn and unruly. However,
- 7:24Speaker 4: as it approached Jesus, its spirit calmed. The wild beast
- 7:28Speaker 4: ceased its writhing and stayed completely still before its master.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Jesus approached it and stroked its face. The disciples were
- 7:36Speaker 4: dumbfounded as Jesus mounted the colt with ease. Jesus descended
- 7:41Speaker 4: down the Mount of Olives towards Jerusalem. <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL>
- 8:02Speaker 4: Citizens of God's holy nation gathered at the gates of
- 8:04Speaker 4: Jerusalem to gaze upon the chosen king. Jesus rode the
- 8:08Speaker 4: colt slowly, and the people parted like the Red Sea
- 8:11Speaker 4: to make way for him. Hosanna, they cried out. Blessed
- 8:15Speaker 4: be the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 8:18Speaker 2: They sang.
- 8:20Speaker 4: They laid out palm fronds to make a pathway for Jesus.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Some of them even removed their own cloaks for him
- 8:26Speaker 4: to walk upon. The crowd roared with glee. They saw
- 8:30Speaker 4: Jesus as the chosen Savior that would liberate them from
- 8:33Speaker 4: the oppression of Rome. They saw him as a wise
- 8:36Speaker 4: and noble king worthy to sit on the throne of David.
- 8:40Speaker 4: They wanted him to rule with power and wisdom However,
- 8:44Speaker 4: Jesus was not the king they expected. He was the
- 8:47Speaker 4: chosen king and hero of God. He was the one
- 8:51Speaker 4: whom every hero of scripture pointed to. But his mission
- 8:54Speaker 4: was not to overthrow a temporary government. No, he had
- 8:58Speaker 4: a much greater enemy to vanquish. The sin and shame
- 9:01Speaker 4: that choked humanity since the Garden of Eden needed to
- 9:04Speaker 4: be conquered.
- 9:05Speaker 3: This would require Jesus to die.
- 9:09Speaker 4: So as the people stirred and sang, Jesus said nothing.
- 9:12Speaker 4: As the people escorted him into the heart of the
- 9:15Speaker 4: city to rule, he remained silent, for his throne was
- 9:20Speaker 4: a cross.
- 9:24Speaker 2: In today's scripture, Jesus and the disciples are dining together
- 9:27Speaker 2: in Bethany, the town where Mary, Martha, and Lazarus lived.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Lazarus was with them, and as they ate, Mary entered
- 9:34Speaker 2: into the room and began to anoint the feet of
- 9:37Speaker 2: Jesus with an expensive oil. She wiped the oil from
- 9:41Speaker 2: his feet with her hair worshiping at the feet of
- 9:43Speaker 2: our Lord without regard for what others might say or think.
- 9:48Speaker 2: All she wanted was to show her love for Jesus
- 9:52Speaker 2: and to anoint him and prepare him for what was
- 9:55Speaker 2: yet to come. It was a powerful moment that was
- 9:59Speaker 2: more symbolic and more expressive than she could have possibly known.
- 10:03Speaker 2: The oil she used was typically reserved for burial preparations.
- 10:08Speaker 2: She did not know, even as they had dined together,
- 10:12Speaker 2: that Jesus was aware from that moment that his time
- 10:16Speaker 2: was drawing very near for him to go to the
- 10:18Speaker 2: cross and give his life. Not all were touched by
- 10:22Speaker 2: this act of worship, however. Judas Iscariot, the one disciple
- 10:26Speaker 2: who would fall away and betray Jesus, complained that what
- 10:30Speaker 2: he saw is the wastefulness of Mary's gesture of love
- 10:33Speaker 2: and worship. He argued that they could sell the oil
- 10:36Speaker 2: and use the money to help the poor. The reality
- 10:39Speaker 2: was that Judas wasn't really interested in the poor or
- 10:42Speaker 2: helping anyone but himself. But we're told that he often
- 10:46Speaker 2: took money from the disciples' purse for his own gain.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Jesus rebuked Judas, telling him to leave Mary alone, for
- 10:54Speaker 2: she had done what she could and all that she could.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Jesus was telling his disciples that could still not grasp
- 11:02Speaker 2: that his time on earth was coming to an end,
- 11:04Speaker 2: that worship and to serve the Lord Jesus was the
- 11:08Speaker 2: goal of life. This is why we are made. He
- 11:11Speaker 2: was soon, very soon, to be handed over to the
- 11:13Speaker 2: authorities and put to death. Jesus' rebuke of Judas even
- 11:17Speaker 2: helped speed this along. as Judas soon departed to meet
- 11:21Speaker 2: with religious leaders and agreed to betray the Lord. The
- 11:25Speaker 2: next day, Jesus spoke with his three closest disciples, giving
- 11:29Speaker 2: them instructions to go into the nearby village where they
- 11:31Speaker 2: would find a donkey tied up with its colt. He
- 11:34Speaker 2: told them to bring them to him, telling anyone who asked,
- 11:37Speaker 2: the Lord needs them. This was more than just an
- 11:42Speaker 2: arrangement for transportation. Jesus was fulfilling a prophecy from Zechariah 9,
- 11:47Speaker 2: which we find recorded in Matthew 21, verse 5. Here
- 11:52Speaker 2: it is. Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold, your
- 11:55Speaker 2: king is coming to you, humble and mounted on a
- 11:58Speaker 2: donkey and a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.
- 12:03Speaker 2: At this time, the people of Israel were looking for
- 12:07Speaker 2: a triumphant, conquering king who would enter the scene with
- 12:11Speaker 2: power and dominance and overthrow the Roman government. But if
- 12:15Speaker 2: they paid attention, they would have known that Jesus would
- 12:18Speaker 2: be a different kind of king, for he came in humility,
- 12:22Speaker 2: not as a military conqueror, but as the servant of
- 12:25Speaker 2: God and the Savior who would give his life as
- 12:29Speaker 2: a ransom for many. Just as Jesus descended the Mount
- 12:32Speaker 2: of Olives into Jerusalem, seated on the colt, crowds lined
- 12:36Speaker 2: the street, throwing palm fronds to the ground for him
- 12:39Speaker 2: to walk upon. They shouted praises, saying, Hosanna in the highest.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Cloaks were removed and thrown on the path as well,
- 12:47Speaker 2: And the excitement was palpable, and yet so many, most all,
- 12:53Speaker 2: were missing the point. They wanted a Savior to fit
- 12:56Speaker 2: their mold and make their dreams come true. They wanted
- 12:59Speaker 2: a kingdom of their own. But Jesus had a greater purpose,
- 13:04Speaker 2: and the people had a much greater need. The greater
- 13:08Speaker 2: need of all is the need of salvation from sin
- 13:11Speaker 2: and to break the chains that bound them spiritually, not
- 13:14Speaker 2: just those who bound them physically. How often do we
- 13:18Speaker 2: also attempt to fit God into our own plans, our
- 13:21Speaker 2: own will, our own desires, rather than yielding and surrendering
- 13:25Speaker 2: our lives to his purpose? Just as the crowd who
- 13:29Speaker 2: wanted to seize Jesus after he fed the 5,000 and
- 13:32Speaker 2: make him a king who would then cast off the
- 13:34Speaker 2: yoke of bondage, this crowd wanted a Messiah who would
- 13:37Speaker 2: establish Israel as a powerful nation free from the power
- 13:42Speaker 2: of Rome. So they sang his praises, leading him into
- 13:45Speaker 2: Jerusalem and to claim a physical throne. But soon most
- 13:50Speaker 2: would turn away, even calling for him to be crucified.
- 13:55Speaker 2: The very ones who said hail him would soon say
- 13:58Speaker 2: nail him. The ones who were saying crown him would
- 14:02Speaker 2: soon be saying nail him to the cross. The crown
- 14:06Speaker 2: would adorn his head, would not be made of gold
- 14:09Speaker 2: and precious stones, but of twisted thorns that spilled his blood.
- 14:13Speaker 2: And yet it was by this blood that true freedom
- 14:16Speaker 2: is found, because there is power in the blood of
- 14:20Speaker 2: the Lord Jesus Christ. Dear God, we thank you for
- 14:23Speaker 2: today's scripture and how we are reminded of your love
- 14:26Speaker 2: for us as Jesus came to Jerusalem prepared to die
- 14:30Speaker 2: on the cross for our sins. Thank you for Jesus.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Thank you for salvation and the forgiveness of sins and
- 14:37Speaker 2: eternal life in you.
- 14:39Speaker 4: Amen.
