- 0:01Welcome to another edition of Bird Life Extravaganza, your
- 0:08weekly dose of the lovely lives of birdies.
- 0:12I am your host and dear old buddy Arthur, and it's my
- 0:17absolute delight that this week we shall be investigating the
- 0:21airspeed velocity of unladen sparrows.
- 0:24That's right. Oh, I see.
- 0:26I have a listener question here. You're wondering African or are
- 0:29you European? Swallow.
- 0:30Well, I'm not exactly quite sure who do you know?
- 0:40See how much bits swallows? Well, you have to know these
- 0:43things when you're a king, you know.
- 0:44Hello friends, Yes indeed, these are things you need to know when
- 0:47you're king. I am Sean.
- 0:50It is the 1st of April, Happy April Fools.
- 0:53That is just a little bit of silliness.
- 0:54If you're wondering what on earth is going on, that is just
- 0:58a little bit of love from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
- 1:01You should definitely look that up if you haven't seen it.
- 1:04Today is indeed a Wednesday and it is the day of silliness.
- 1:09But more than a day of silliness, it is this day in
- 1:13Holy Week when we continue far more reverently than the start
- 1:16of this podcast as we with Jesus move through Jerusalem toward
- 1:21the end of the week. Which of course, on Friday will
- 1:24be Good Friday, when our hearts will break at what happened to
- 1:29our Lord. But boy, oh boy, will that all
- 1:32change when the glory, the glory and the victory of Easter Sunday
- 1:37are upon us. So, friends, today we'll
- 1:39continue reading this account in the book of Mark.
- 1:43And in this chapter, Jesus speaks about the future.
- 1:46Jesus speaks about what will happen at that time and deep
- 1:49into the future. And it is a chapter that has
- 1:52caused many, many scholars to spend many long nights and days
- 1:57trying to work out exactly what it is that Jesus is talking
- 1:59about. But as we read it today,
- 2:01friends, we are going to rest in the knowledge that it is God who
- 2:05holds all of these events in his hands.
- 2:08Our God who loves us, is sovereign and calls us to trust
- 2:12in him. So Holy Spirit, draw our hearts
- 2:16closer to you to understand you, but more importantly, to know
- 2:21you intimately and to trust in you.
- 2:25Alright friends, all that is said and done, let us now leave
- 2:28the world of sparrows behind and read together Mark Chapter 13.
- 2:44As Jesus was leaving the temple that day, one of his disciples
- 2:47said, Teacher, look at these magnificent buildings.
- 2:51Look at the impressive stones in the walls.
- 2:54Jesus replied, yes, look at these great buildings, but they
- 2:58will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on
- 3:02top of another. Later, Jesus sat on the Mount of
- 3:06Olives across the valley from the temple.
- 3:08Peter, James, John and Andrew came to him privately and asked
- 3:12him, tell us when will all this happen?
- 3:16What sign will show us that these things are about to be
- 3:18fulfilled? Jesus replied, Don't let anyone
- 3:22mislead you, for many will come in my name claiming I am the
- 3:26Messiah. They will deceive many, and you
- 3:30will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don't panic.
- 3:34Yes, these things must take place, but the end won't follow
- 3:38immediately. Nation will go to war against
- 3:41nation and Kingdom against Kingdom.
- 3:44There will be earthquakes in many parts of the world as well
- 3:47as famines. But this is only the first of
- 3:50the birth pains with more to come when these things begin to
- 3:54happen. Watch out.
- 3:56He will be handed over to the local councils and beaten in the
- 4:00synagogues. You will stand trial before
- 4:03governors and kings because you are my followers, but this will
- 4:08be your opportunity to tell them about me.
- 4:10For the good news must first be preached to all nations.
- 4:14And when you are arrested and stand trial, don't worry in
- 4:18advance about what to say. Just say what God tells you at
- 4:22that time, for it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy
- 4:26Spirit. A brother will betray his
- 4:29brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and
- 4:33children will rebel against their parents and cause them to
- 4:36be killed. And everyone will hate you,
- 4:39because you are my followers. But the one who endures to the
- 4:43end will be saved. The day is coming when you will
- 4:47see the sacrilegious object that causes desecration standing
- 4:51where he should not be. Reader, pay attention.
- 4:55Then those in Judah must flee to the hills.
- 4:59A person out on the deck of a roof must not go back into the
- 5:02house to pack. A person out in the field must
- 5:06not return even to get a coat. How terrible it will be for
- 5:10pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days.
- 5:14And pray that your flight will not be in winter, for there will
- 5:17be greater anguish in those days than any time since.
- 5:21God created the world, and it will never be so great again.
- 5:25In fact, unless the Lord shortens that time of calamity,
- 5:29not a single person will survive.
- 5:32But for the sake of His chosen ones, He has shortened those
- 5:35days. Then if anyone tells you, look,
- 5:39here is the Messiah, or there He is, don't believe it.
- 5:43For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and
- 5:46perform signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even
- 5:51God's chosen ones. Watch out.
- 5:54I have warned you about this ahead of time.
- 5:58At that time, after the anguish of those days, the sun will be
- 6:02darkened, the moon will give no light, the stars will fall from
- 6:06the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
- 6:10Then everyone will see the sun of man coming on the clouds with
- 6:15great power and glory, and he will send out his angels to
- 6:20gather his chosen ones from all over the world, from the
- 6:23farthest ends of the earth and heaven.
- 6:27Now learn a lesson from the fig tree.
- 6:30When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know
- 6:34that summer is near. In the same way, when you see
- 6:38all these things taking place, you can know that his return is
- 6:42very near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this
- 6:46generation will not pass from the scene.
- 6:49Before all these things take place, heaven and earth will
- 6:53disappear, but my words will never disappear.
- 6:57However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will
- 7:01happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself.
- 7:05Only the Father knows. And since you don't know when
- 7:09that time will come, be on guard.
- 7:12Stay alert. The coming of the Son of Man can
- 7:16be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip.
- 7:20When he left home, he gave each of his slaves instructions about
- 7:23the work they were to do, and he told the gatekeeper to watch for
- 7:27his return. You too must keep watch, for you
- 7:31don't know when the master of the household will return.
- 7:34In the evening, at midnight, before dawn, or at Daybreak.
- 7:38Don't let him find you sleeping. When he arrives without warning,
- 7:42I say to you what I say to everyone.
- 7:45Watch for him. Oh, Jesus, you are indeed that
- 7:58master. You are indeed the sovereign God
- 8:02of all and all the things that will come, that will be revealed
- 8:07in time. These things are all within your
- 8:11grasp, your power, and your plan.
- 8:15So, Lord, I pray that you give us your Spirit, your spirit of
- 8:20boldness, your spirit of faith and of readiness, so that our
- 8:25whole lives can be lived as though on the precipice of your
- 8:30nearness, of your return. Well, that gives us a real sense
- 8:36of immediacy, doesn't it? That that each day could be our
- 8:39last. Each day could be the day that
- 8:41you come back and I can really focus our priorities for the
- 8:45day. To just live for you, to share
- 8:49your love with the world that desperately needs it, and to
- 8:53hold tightly clinging to you Your grace and your provision
- 8:57for us. You are sovereign, You are
- 9:01wonderful, and your love for us knows no bounds.
- 9:07You're incredible and we love you back and we praise you and
- 9:11we pray. All of this and your wonderful
- 9:13name, Jesus. Amen.
