- 0:0052 weeks ago we began First Thessalonians, and today we come
- 0:09to the conclusion of this marvelous book.
- 0:14We began looking at chapter one. That's where you usually begin
- 0:19when you start a new book. And it was all about the model
- 0:23church. And the Church of Thessalonica
- 0:27sets a pattern. In fact, it's the only church
- 0:30that God calls a pattern in the New Testament.
- 0:36In other words, it's a church that we are to model our lives
- 0:39after. So chapter 1 is all about the
- 0:43model church. Chapter 2, verses 1 to 12 was
- 0:47all about the model leader. Model churches have model
- 0:52leaders, and Paul was that model leader.
- 0:58And then you move to verse 13 of chapter 2 down to the end and
- 1:03you have the model follower. Model churches have model
- 1:08followers who follow model leaders.
- 1:13And then you move into Chapter 3 and you see all about the model
- 1:20friend, because model friends are model followers and model
- 1:27followers follow model leaders that make up a model church.
- 1:34And then you come to chapter 4 and five.
- 1:37You have what is called the the model life because the model
- 1:43friends and model followers and model leaders live the kind of
- 1:49life that others are to emulate. So that you have a church that
- 1:54is a model church. And we gave you 6
- 1:58characteristics that describe the model life #1 The model life
- 2:05abstains from sexual immorality #2 The model life is that life
- 2:11that aspires to a life of charity #3 the model life was
- 2:18one who anticipates the return of deity.
- 2:22And then #4 the model life is one that is alert to the world's
- 2:28destiny and their responsibility.
- 2:32And then the model life is one that adapts within God's
- 2:35wonderful family. And then lastly, the model life
- 2:39is the one that adores their God fully and continually.
- 2:46That's chapter 4 and chapter 5. And now, now Paul is going to
- 2:49bring everything to a conclusion.
- 2:52And I wonder what must have been going through his mind as he
- 2:56concludes this, this epistle. You know, when you write a
- 3:01letter to someone, you want to bring it to a conclusion, an
- 3:06ending point. You want to bring it to a place
- 3:09where you can kind of drive home what has already been said, kind
- 3:14of summon it up so that others will will grasp it fully.
- 3:19The difference between your letters, my letters and Paul's
- 3:23letters is that Paul's letters were inspired by God.
- 3:27Yours and mine are are not, but his was.
- 3:31And yet it was all about his emotions and and thoughts that
- 3:34played a a major part in his conclusion.
- 3:39So let's let's look at it and let's read it and see what Paul
- 3:42has to say as he concludes this epistle, verse 23 of chapter 5.
- 3:51Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely, and may
- 3:57your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete without blame
- 4:03at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, faithful as he who calls
- 4:07you, and he also will bring it to pass.
- 4:12Brethren, pray for us. Greet all the brethren with a
- 4:17holy kiss. I adjure you by the Lord to have
- 4:23this letter read to all the brethren.
- 4:27The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
- 4:35This is how Paul concludes. He gives a solemn, A solemn
- 4:43request, and then he gives a sincere reminder.
- 4:51The solemn request is is made-up into three different categories.
- 4:57It's rooted in the peace of God. It is revealed in his prayer to
- 5:07God and it is realized in the promise from God That is his
- 5:17solemn request. It's rooted in the peace of God,
- 5:27the God who is peace. He says now, now, now, may the
- 5:30God himself, the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely.
- 5:37It's all about the God of peace. He, he's going to focus their
- 5:41attention on their God and, and the peace that only God himself
- 5:47can bring. So he wants to focus their
- 5:51attention on the God who brings them peace because as he
- 5:55concludes this letter, he wants them to be at peace not just
- 5:59with the Lord, but with one another.
- 6:02And having been justified by faith.
- 6:04Romans 51, it tells us that you have peace with God.
- 6:06So they're already at peace with God because it's the church and
- 6:10they believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 6:12So they're already at peace with God and he is asking the God of
- 6:15peace to do something unique and special in their lives.
- 6:20It's so important to realize that our Lord is the Lord of
- 6:27peace. In fact, in in Second
- 6:30Thessalonians, Paul says this in chapter 3 verse #16 he says now
- 6:38may the Lord of peace himself continually grant you peace in
- 6:42every circumstance. The Lord be with you all.
- 6:45So even in the second letter he's going to refer back to the
- 6:48Lord of peace. Remember, it's the Father.
- 6:53It's the Father who provides peace.
- 6:57It's the Son who purchased peace, and it's the Spirit that
- 7:04produces peace. It's God the Father who provides
- 7:09it. But in order to have it, it has
- 7:11to be purchased, and the sun purchased that peace on
- 7:15Calvary's tree. And once you embrace what the
- 7:19sun has done, it's a Spirit of God that produces that peace.
- 7:23For the fruit of the Spirit is Lovejoy and peace.
- 7:27It all comes from the Spirit of God.
- 7:30That's why the Old Testament says in Isaiah 26 verse #3 that
- 7:34God will keep him in perfect peace.
- 7:36Whose mind is stayed on thee? So Paul is drawing them back,
- 7:43referencing the Old Testament and drawing them back to the God
- 7:46of peace. So they recognize that their
- 7:48mind is to be stayed, to be focused on the God of peace.
- 7:56A hymn that we used to sing growing up in the church.
- 7:59Don't sing it much today, but it's a, it's a great hymn.
- 8:03It's called like a River glorious.
- 8:07It says like a river, Glorious is God's perfect peace over all.
- 8:12Victorious in its bright increase, perfect, yet it
- 8:15floweth. Fuller every day perfect yet it
- 8:18groweth deeper all the way. Hidden in the hollow of His
- 8:23blessed hand. Never folk and follow, never
- 8:27traitor. Stand not a surge of worry, not
- 8:31a shade of care, not a blast of hurry.
- 8:33Touch the Spirit there. Every joy or trial fall from
- 8:37above traced upon our dial by the son of love.
- 8:42We may trust him fully all for us to do they trust him holy
- 8:49find him holy true saved upon Jehovah hearts are fully blessed
- 8:56finding as he promised perfect peace and rest So Paul as he
- 9:05concludes with this solemn request.
- 9:07It's, it's rooted in the peace of God.
- 9:12But then notice this, it's revealed in his prayer to God.
- 9:17Now may the God of peace sanctify you entirely, sanctify
- 9:24you completely, he says. And may your spirit and soul and
- 9:31body be preserved complete without blame at the coming of
- 9:34our Lord Jesus Christ. He wants him to understand
- 9:38complete and total sanctification and complete and
- 9:43total security. Now may the God of peace himself
- 9:50sanctify you, set you apart completely, entirely holy toward
- 9:56Him. Now.
- 9:57Now we know that we're sanctified when we are saved.
- 10:00We are set apart under God for his purposes.
- 10:02When we are saved, we are justified and sanctified.
- 10:05But that positional sanctification needs to be lived
- 10:09out on a regular basis so that we practically work out our
- 10:13salvation with fear and trembling.
- 10:15As Paul says in Philippians chapter 2, that we are setting
- 10:19ourselves apart from the things of the world.
- 10:23If Paul says the way that happens is because the God of
- 10:26peace who's going to set you apart completely one day at the
- 10:30coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, but in the meantime stay
- 10:33separate from the things of the world.
- 10:36And then notice this. He says also realize that he
- 10:40will secure you, He will safeguard you, He will watch
- 10:44over you, soul, spirit, body, mind, everything.
- 10:52He's asking God to help them understand the security they
- 10:55have in the God of peace. And that security can only come
- 10:59to the God who who gives peace. And so he makes this solemn
- 11:05request that's rooted in the in the peace of God, and that is
- 11:11truly revealed in his prayer to God and then is truly realized
- 11:22in the promise of God, faithful as he who called you, who also
- 11:27will bring it to pass. He appeals to the faithfulness
- 11:31of God, not just the peace of God, but the faithfulness of
- 11:35God. I love what Psalm 3311 says when
- 11:39it says that his faithfulness is the the belt around his waist.
- 11:51Faithfulness is the belt around the waist of God.
- 11:55In other words, it's the faithfulness of God that holds
- 11:58all of his attributes together. He's faithful in love, He's
- 12:03faithful in grace, he's faithful in mercy, He's faithful in
- 12:07compassion, He's faithful in his power, he's faithful in his
- 12:12presence. He's faithful in everything.
- 12:15And so because he is faithful, it's the, it's the belt that
- 12:18holds all the attributes together.
- 12:22The Bible says over in Revelation 3 verse #14 as well
- 12:28as Revelation chapter 19 that our God is faithful and our God
- 12:34is true. The Bible says in Psalm 37 three
- 12:39that we are to feed securely on the faithfulness of God.
- 12:47In other words, God's faithfulness is our daily food,
- 12:50it's our daily sustenance. Because God is faithful to do
- 12:54everything he said he's going to do, faithful as he who called
- 12:57you, who will bring it to pass. In other words, he will sanctify
- 13:00you, He will glorify you, He will secure you.
- 13:04Because it all depends on the faithfulness of God, not on
- 13:08those who believe God does it. And so he appeals to the
- 13:15faithfulness of God. I think so many times we we miss
- 13:19how faithful God is. God is faithful to take you
- 13:25through temptation. First Corinthians 10/13 there is
- 13:29no temptation taking you such as it's common to man, but God is
- 13:32faithful. God's faithful to always provide
- 13:38a route of escape. Whenever you are tempted,
- 13:42there's always going to be a route of escape because God's
- 13:46faithful to provide that for you.
- 13:49God. God is faithful to forgive you
- 13:51all your sins. If we confess our sins, He is
- 13:55faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from
- 14:00all unrighteousness. That's what God does.
- 14:04So we know that He will take us through temptation.
- 14:06We know that when we confess our sins, He is faithful and true to
- 14:10forgive us all of our sins. I don't have to worry about
- 14:13whether or not God's going to forgive me or not.
- 14:16He's already forgiven all my sins, past, present, and future.
- 14:19But when I go to him and I say the same thing about my sin that
- 14:22God says about my sin, that's what it means to confess.
- 14:26Then God is faithful and just to cleanse us from all
- 14:33unrighteousness. It's important to know that the
- 14:37Bible tells us that God answers prayer based on His
- 14:43faithfulness. Listen to what the Psalmist said
- 14:46in Psalm 143 verse #1 Hear my prayer.
- 14:50O Lord, give ear to my suffocations.
- 14:54Answer me in your faithfulness. Answer me in your faithfulness.
- 15:03God is so faithful to answer prayer.
- 15:07Sometimes we forget about that, but He is because He is always
- 15:12true to His word. Over in Second Thessalonians
- 15:16chapter 3 verse #3 Paul says these words.
- 15:22He says, but the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen
- 15:28and protect you from the evil. God is faithful to protect you
- 15:34from the evil one. He's faithful to strengthen you
- 15:39so that you can withstand the evilness of the evil one.
- 15:45God is so faithful. So Paul appeals to the
- 15:49faithfulness of God as he concludes this epistle.
- 15:53Faithful, as he called you, who also will bring it to pass.
- 15:57And then he moves from a solemn request to a sincere reminder.
- 16:05He's going to remind us of four things.
- 16:07The first one is this engage in prayer for one another.
- 16:15Paul says simply, brethren, pray for us.
- 16:21Now all throughout the letter, Paul has already prayed for
- 16:23them. Chapter one verse #2 he said, I
- 16:25pray for you continually in chapter 3.
- 16:28Pray that their love would abound more and more.
- 16:31And all throughout Paul's epistles, he, he begins to
- 16:35always pray for his people. And then he says, now, now,
- 16:40brethren, pray for us. But he didn't tell him what the
- 16:45requests are. He just says, brethren, pray for
- 16:48us. And I think about that.
- 16:51And I think that as we conclude this book, wouldn't it be good
- 16:54for us to, to, to engage ourselves in praying one for
- 17:02another? That is just so important.
- 17:06And what do you pray for? Will you pray for the model
- 17:08life? You pray that the people of the
- 17:11church will abstain from sexual immorality.
- 17:14You pray that they would aspire to a life of charity.
- 17:17You pray that they would adapt within God's wonderful family.
- 17:22You pray that they would adore their God sincerely and
- 17:26continually and faithfully. But but think about our prayers
- 17:32and how we pray one for another. The best way to understand how
- 17:38to pray for one another is to examine Paul's prayers in the
- 17:41scripture. You should always pray the Bible
- 17:47for people. Always pray the Bible for
- 17:50people. Follow Paul's prayers when you
- 17:54pray for the church because when you do, you begin to pray
- 17:59biblically and you want to pray in line with what the Spirit of
- 18:05God wants. So you pray scripturally, You
- 18:10pray biblically. So many times our prayers are
- 18:16our prayer requests become so, so much more physical than
- 18:22spiritual. You ever notice that we always
- 18:27want prayer for healing. We always want prayer for our
- 18:32health. We always want prayer for going
- 18:34into surgery. We always want prayer for our
- 18:37recovery after surgery. Right?
- 18:39And there's nothing wrong with that.
- 18:42But when you think about prayer, are we asking God's will to be
- 18:47done? We want God's will to be done in
- 18:51your life. Maybe it's God's will that you
- 18:54be sick or that you stay sick. I don't know.
- 19:00Maybe it's God's will that you be healed.
- 19:02I don't know that either. So I pray God's will to be done.
- 19:08Why? Because I want God's will for
- 19:10your life more than I want my will for your life.
- 19:14But when you think about our prayers, we pray along the lines
- 19:17of more our will than God's will, right?
- 19:22We need to think about that. How do we pray for God's will to
- 19:27be accomplished in people's lives?
- 19:30Because that's the direction of our prayers.
- 19:34I'm reminded of of the nurse who thought of a way that she could
- 19:42pray for people's lives. And so it says.
- 19:47The story is told of a special nurse who who knew the
- 19:50importance of intercessory prayer because each day she used
- 19:55her hands as instruments of God's love and mercy toward
- 19:58those in her care. She found it natural to use her
- 20:02hand as a scheme of prayer. Each finger represented someone
- 20:10she wanted to pray for. Her thumb was nearest to her and
- 20:16reminded her to pray for those who were closest and dearest.
- 20:23The index finger was used for pointing, so it stood for those
- 20:29who instructed her. The third finger was the
- 20:32tallest. It stood for those in
- 20:34leadership. The fourth finger was the
- 20:36weakest, representing those in distress and pain.
- 20:40The little finger, which was the smallest and least important,
- 20:46reminded the nurse to pray for her own needs.
- 20:54Wise words because usually the thumb represents our own needs
- 21:00because it's closest to us. And so we're going to pray for
- 21:04our own needs. Have you ever, have you ever
- 21:07thought about how you pray and what you pray for?
- 21:12Have you ever wrote those things down?
- 21:15Have you ever monitored your own prayer time and think about how
- 21:21often are our prayers are more physically related and
- 21:25spiritually related? Paul says, brethren pray for us
- 21:30and he doesn't give them any particular requests, but he's
- 21:33given them five chapters to look at and to realize that Paul had
- 21:40already engaged in conflict with Satan.
- 21:44He'd already been kicked out of Thessalonica, and so he knew
- 21:48that the enemy was at work. So he even knew what they, they,
- 21:52they would know what to pray for.
- 21:55So he says, brethren, pray for us.
- 21:59So engage in prayer for one another #2 I like this one.
- 22:10Ensure affection for one another.
- 22:17This is how Paul says it. Greet one another with a holy
- 22:24kiss. My translation Ensure affection
- 22:32one for another. You know the church is to be
- 22:36personally involved in each other's lives.
- 22:42And it is true that in Paul's day that when people greeted one
- 22:47another, they kissed one another on the cheek.
- 22:51It's a holy kiss. That's very important to signify
- 22:55the kind of kiss that it was. But but it reminds us of, of, of
- 23:01the affection and the devotion that the early church had one
- 23:06for another. And I think that so much is is
- 23:10lacking in today's church when it comes to being affectionate
- 23:16one toward another. Paul would say it this way in
- 23:19Romans chapter 12. He said be kindly affectionate
- 23:23toward one another in brotherly love.
- 23:28Be be kindly affectionate toward one another.
- 23:34Kindly affectionate translated one word, philos, which means
- 23:38friendly kind of love, Storgay, which is a maternal familial
- 23:44kind of love, a family kind of love.
- 23:47He says we are to be so kindly affectionate toward one another
- 23:51that we treat each other as if we're part of the same family
- 23:54because we are we're all part of the family of God.
- 24:00But but I wonder how how affectionate we are with one
- 24:07another. We live in a a digital age and
- 24:14it's hindered the way that we relate one with another, and
- 24:21that's unfortunate. In fact, think of it this way.
- 24:28We substitute communicating technically.
- 24:37Instead of connecting personally, we communicate
- 24:44technically, but we do not connect personally.
- 24:52Do not substitute communication for connection.
- 24:57Connection can only happen face to face.
- 25:02Communication can come through emails and and texts and
- 25:06Instagram and all kinds of modern day technology.
- 25:10You can communicate that way, but you cannot connect that way.
- 25:18Connection comes through personal experience, eye to eye
- 25:24gaze, the the ability to embrace one another.
- 25:31It's like, you know, people today are into digital church.
- 25:35They want to stay home and watch church on television.
- 25:39That's not church, right? We told you months ago that that
- 25:45when you do that, it's like watching a fireplace on your TV.
- 25:49You know that it's flickering, you can hear it.
- 25:52You know that it's moving because you see it, but you
- 25:55don't feel any warmth because of it.
- 25:59Why? Because there's no connection.
- 26:02You can get as close to your TV as you want, but there's no
- 26:04warmth coming from that fireplace on your television.
- 26:09In order to experience the warmth of a fireplace, you got
- 26:12to be by the fire. And the closer you get to the
- 26:16fire, the hotter it becomes. Well, the same way it is true in
- 26:21the church. We don't connect digitally, you
- 26:29connect personally. In fact, think of it this way.
- 26:34The more distracted or distracted we are digitally and
- 26:42technically, the more displaced we are spiritually and
- 26:50personally. Think about that.
- 26:55The more distracted we are digitally and we are.
- 27:00Just go to a restaurant, watch people sitting in a booth,
- 27:04sitting around a chair. All the phones are on the table
- 27:09or in their hands. Why?
- 27:13Because what's going to happen on that phone is more important
- 27:16than what's going to happen across from me on the table.
- 27:20So if you're out on a date, ladies, and you're with a man
- 27:23and he has his phone out on the table, recognize that whatever
- 27:28is going to pop up with that phone is more important than you
- 27:32across the table from him. That's just send a loud and
- 27:36clear message to you that this guy is not that into you.
- 27:41He's more into what's going to happen on his phone and who's
- 27:44going to contact him. That's very important to realize
- 27:48this and it's and it's convenient and it's easy.
- 27:53It is today to communicate with people.
- 27:56It's very difficult to connect with people.
- 28:00Why is that? Because you got to be
- 28:02vulnerable, you got to be personable.
- 28:06And as time goes on in the church, we are less and less
- 28:12personable and we are separating ourselves one from another.
- 28:17That's why we don't necessarily have to greet one another with a
- 28:22holy kiss, but to be able to, to be kindly affectionate toward
- 28:27one another and to be able to embrace one another and express
- 28:31our love one for another, face to face, is so incredibly
- 28:36important. And so not only do we engage in
- 28:41prayer one for another, but we are to ensure affection one for
- 28:48another and #3 enact the reading of God's Word.
- 28:58Paul says that this way in chapter 5 he says these words.
- 29:05I adjure you by the Lord to have this letter read to all the
- 29:16brethren. One thing you need to do is read
- 29:24the Bible. You don't have to necessarily
- 29:27study the Bible, although you should.
- 29:30You should at least read the Bible because reading does all
- 29:38kinds of things. In our lives.
- 29:41We miss this. We know that Paul has already
- 29:45said in chapter 2 verse #13 that God's work effectively works in
- 29:50those who believe. So if the reading of God's Word
- 29:56is important, and Paul told Timothy in first Timothy 4 verse
- 29:59#13 give yourself to the reading of the text, to the instructing
- 30:05of the text and the teaching of the text, but give yourself to
- 30:09the reading of it. There's something about reading
- 30:14the Bible that's very, very important.
- 30:17And I hear people all the time say, well, well, I read that
- 30:19chapter or I read that book, and I didn't get anything out of it.
- 30:24And they don't understand that that's a commentary on them, not
- 30:27the Bible. Because when you're looking and
- 30:30reading the scriptures, you're looking to see and understand
- 30:34the character nature of God. But we approach the scriptures
- 30:38because we have a certain need or a certain one.
- 30:41We want God to meet that need. So we read a a passage or a
- 30:44chapter or a book and well, that didn't really meet my needs.
- 30:48So I guess the Bible really is not relevant to where I am
- 30:51today, but it is because the need you have before you is not
- 30:57nearly as the need above you. And the need above you is God,
- 31:03and you need Him more than you need that which is around you.
- 31:07But we forget that. So you you need to come to
- 31:11understand who your God is, what He has done, and the more you
- 31:17do, the more you realize how much you truly love Him.
- 31:22Just a simple reading of the word.
- 31:24Paul would say the same thing in Colossians chapter 4 when he
- 31:28said when this epistle is read among you, very important
- 31:38reading is a lost art today among those in America and
- 31:45around the world. We don't like to read much like
- 31:49to read in snippets, short little essays, but but to
- 31:55actually read the Bible, people don't like to do that.
- 32:01In fact, I was I was thinking about that this past week and I
- 32:04I went back to Psalm 119 and I realized that just the cursory
- 32:11reading of the of Psalm 119 does so much in our lives.
- 32:19Psalmist begins Psalm 119 this way.
- 32:22How blessed are those whose way is blameless who walk in the law
- 32:25of the Lord. How blessed are those who
- 32:28observe his testimonies, who seek him with all their heart.
- 32:34There there is a certain blessing that comes through
- 32:37observing the testimonies of God, but it only comes to those
- 32:42who read, look, observe what is written.
- 32:52But the blessing does come with a simple observation of the
- 32:57text. He does talking about how
- 33:00blessed is a man who who studies day and night at the word of
- 33:05God. He does talk about meditating
- 33:06day and night. Here he's just talking about
- 33:08those who observe the statues, something that comes to them, a
- 33:13blessing, a reward. The Bible says, I shall run the
- 33:19way of your commandments, for you will enlarge my heart.
- 33:24There's something about reading the commandments of God that
- 33:27does something to my heart. It makes it long for God and
- 33:33seek after God. He says in verse #37 Turn away
- 33:38my eyes from looking at vanity, and revive me in your ways.
- 33:45When I read the word of God, it causes my eyes to turn away from
- 33:49that which is vain, that which is empty, that which is futile,
- 33:53that which makes absolutely no difference.
- 33:58He says in verse #93 I will never forget your precepts, for
- 34:02by then them you have revived me.
- 34:06Revival comes because I do not forget what God has said.
- 34:12Well, how do I know what God has said?
- 34:13It's because I read what God has said.
- 34:16The psalmist knows that in order for his soul to be revived, this
- 34:19is what happens. It says I have restrained my
- 34:23feet from every evil way that I may keep your word.
- 34:26In other words, when when I read the Word of God, it restrains my
- 34:29feet from going the evil way. It's just a simple reading of
- 34:33the Scripture. The observation of the
- 34:36Scripture, the looking at the Scripture, will do a marvelous
- 34:40work in the life of the believer.
- 34:44Paul knows that. So he says, I want this epistle
- 34:47to be read among you. I want you to read it over and
- 34:51over and over again. You know, it's like when you
- 34:56receive a, a letter from a loved one.
- 34:58Of course we don't receive letters anymore.
- 34:59We get emails and and texts. But in the olden days, when I
- 35:02was growing up, we used to have to write letters to people,
- 35:05right? You had to really write a thank
- 35:07you note to people. And sometimes when you, when you
- 35:10got a letter from your loved 1, you just kept it and you read it
- 35:13over and over and over again. Because the words which they had
- 35:19said, I, I've kept cards from my wife from years ago, years ago
- 35:26that she has written to me. And every once in a while I'll
- 35:29just go back from, through those cards and read what she said.
- 35:36And then I want to go back to her when she's mad at me and
- 35:37say, Hey, this is what you said. Remember that 10 years ago?
- 35:41No, I don't do that. But the bottom line is, is that
- 35:43it just go back and read those things.
- 35:45It's so powerful. Well, that's just a that's not
- 35:48the inspired word of God. That's just a a note from my
- 35:51wife. But the inspired word of God,
- 35:55you read it over and over again. It never gets old.
- 36:00It never it's crusty, it never becomes routine.
- 36:06It's a life giving, life breathing word of the living
- 36:11God. So engage in prayer for one
- 36:15another, ensure affection one toward another #3 enact the
- 36:24reading of the Word of God. And lastly, enjoy the grace of
- 36:31God. Paul began by talking about
- 36:35grace in chapter 1, and he ends talking about grace in chapter
- 36:405. God's grace is undeserved,
- 36:49unmeasurable, unearned, and unrepayable.
- 36:59God's favor upon fallen man is unbelievable.
- 37:05So how do you enjoy the grace of God #1 Abide in the God of
- 37:16grace. Abide in the God of grace.
- 37:25This is what Christ said in John 15.
- 37:28I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine dresser.
- 37:33Every branch in me that does not bear fruit, He takes away.
- 37:37In every branch that bears fruit he prunes it so that it may bear
- 37:40more fruit. You are already clean because of
- 37:43the word which I have spoken to you.
- 37:45So abide. Remain in me, and I in you.
- 37:53As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in
- 37:57the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in me.
- 38:05Remain steadfast with me. Abide in the God of grace.
- 38:09You want to enjoy the grace of God.
- 38:13Abide in the God of grace, because from Him comes that
- 38:17which you do not deserve. And then not only do you abide
- 38:22in the grace of God, but you also approach the throne of
- 38:26grace. That's Hebrews 415 and 16.
- 38:32You approach the throne of grace.
- 38:34We're to come boldly before the throne of grace that we might
- 38:37receive mercy and grace to help in time of need.
- 38:44You want to enjoy the grace of God.
- 38:46Abide in the God of grace. Approach the throne of grace,
- 38:50and then #3 make sure that you apply the message of grace.
- 39:01Paul says in Acts at the 20 verse #32 I commend you to God
- 39:05in the word of His grace, which is able to build you up.
- 39:09Paul says, look, I'm leaving you, but I'm going to give you
- 39:11the word of His grace because this is what's going to build
- 39:15you, sustain you, stabilize you, secure you, strengthen you.
- 39:22So I commend you to God in the word of His grace, which is able
- 39:25to build you up. So you need to apply the message
- 39:31of grace because God's Word is the word that gives the message
- 39:37about grace. So abide in the God of grace,
- 39:41approach the thought of grace, apply the message of grace, and
- 39:46then #4 understand this, that you are to articulate with words
- 39:57of grace, articulate with words of grace.
- 40:03Colossians chapter 4. Paul says this in verse number
- 40:06six. Let your speech always be with
- 40:11grace, seasoned with salt, articulate with words of grace.
- 40:21That's why you would say in Ephesians 4, Let no unwholesome
- 40:25word proceed out of your mouth. None, but only the kind of words
- 40:30that are useful for building someone up.
- 40:37When we articulate the with the words of grace, we are actually
- 40:41doing something in someone's life that will enable them to
- 40:45understand the beauty of God's grace.
- 40:50Think about your conversation with your wife this morning, or
- 40:54your husband, or your children. Were they words of grace, words
- 41:01of kindness, words that would move them on to maturity?
- 41:06Or were they bitter, angry words?
- 41:10Were they yelling words? Were they the kind of words that
- 41:15that that you would be ashamed of had they been put on a screen
- 41:23for announcements this morning in church?
- 41:29Here's #5 5 is really good, and that is you need to accept the
- 41:39hand of grace, abide in the God of grace, approach the throne of
- 41:47grace, apply the message of grace, articulate with words of
- 41:52grace, but accept, accept God's hand of grace.
- 42:04This is hard, but let me read to you what that great Old
- 42:10Testament character did and said, Joseph in Genesis chapter
- 42:1645. Joseph had just revealed
- 42:19themselves to his brothers. They did not recognize him, but
- 42:26when he finally revealed himself, it says this verse 4 of
- 42:31Genesis 45. Then Joseph said to his
- 42:34brothers, please come closer to me.
- 42:37And they came closer. And he said, I am your brother
- 42:39Joseph, whom listen carefully, you sold into Egypt, whom you
- 42:49sold into Egypt. Now listen carefully.
- 42:53Now do not be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold
- 42:58me here comma for God sent me before you to preserve life.
- 43:10You sold me. God sent me.
- 43:16What a what an incredible way to explain all of his turmoil.
- 43:21You sold me, but God sent me. This is this.
- 43:25This is so good, he says, for the famine has been in the land
- 43:30these two years, and there are still five years in which there
- 43:33will be neither plowing nor harvesting for seven.
- 43:38God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant in
- 43:43the earth and to keep you alive by a great deliverance.
- 43:48You sold me. God sent me that I might save
- 43:52you. That is a great perspective.
- 43:58He says verse 8 Now therefore it was not you who sent me here,
- 44:05but God don't take credit for for what's going to happen here
- 44:10because you sold me and you sent me here because it was God who
- 44:14sent me. You sold me.
- 44:16God sent me that I might save you.
- 44:22He says He has made me a father to Pharaoh, and Lord of all his
- 44:28household, and ruler over all the land of Egypt.
- 44:32Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, Thus says your son
- 44:38Joseph, God has made me Lord of all Egypt.
- 44:48He accepted God's hand of grace long before he was ever made
- 44:57Lord of Egypt. He accepted God's hand of grace
- 45:02when he was sold into slavery. He accepted God's hand of grace
- 45:07when he was thrown into a pit. He accepted God's hand of grace
- 45:12when he was raised to a level of supremacy in Potiphar's
- 45:17Potiphar's house. He accepted the hand of grace
- 45:20when Potiphar's wife lied about him.
- 45:23He was thrown into prison. It was all about accepting God's
- 45:29hand of grace. So it's all said and done.
- 45:35You meant it for evil, God meant it for good.
- 45:40And God saved two nations, the nation of Egypt and the nation
- 45:46of Israel. What you meant for evil, God had
- 45:51greater purposes. You sold me, God sent me so that
- 45:59I might save you. What a perspective.
- 46:07In the moment, it's hard to accept the hand of grace, isn't
- 46:10it? So Peter says in first Peter 5
- 46:12verse #6 humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God.
- 46:18What's the mighty hand of God? The mighty hand of God is a a
- 46:22phrase from the Old Testament that's used in the book of
- 46:26Genesis and the book of Exodus to speak of God's mighty hand of
- 46:32of discipline, God's mighty hand of destiny.
- 46:37His hand was always used in the discipline of Israel and the
- 46:41destiny of Israel. Peter picks up on that, says,
- 46:45now I want you to humble yourselves under God's mighty
- 46:49hand of discipline, God's mighty hand of destiny, because with
- 46:56that mighty hand comes God's deliverance.
- 47:02But you must accept the hand of God's grace.
- 47:08You want to enjoy the grace of God, abide in the God of grace.
- 47:14Approach the throne of grace. Make sure that you apply the
- 47:19message of grace so that you can articulate with words of grace
- 47:26and then accept the hand of grace.
- 47:32And lastly, this would be #6 accomplish your ministry with
- 47:41grace. Paul said this in Ephesians
- 47:46chapter 3 verse #7 I was made a minister according to the gift
- 47:57of God's grace. I was made a minister according
- 48:03to God's gracious gift of his favor.
- 48:10So you accomplish your ministry with grace.
- 48:13And what is your ministry? Number one?
- 48:17Your marriage, right? Your marriage is your ministry
- 48:22#2 your family #3 the sphere of influence.
- 48:27Wherever God's placed you, whatever your work environment
- 48:30is, that's where God placed you. That's your ministry.
- 48:34And so you can only accomplish that through the grace that God
- 48:38supplies. That's why the poem was written.
- 48:45Lord, I am willing to receive. What you give, I'm willing to
- 48:49lack. What you withhold I'm willing to
- 48:53relinquish. What you take, I'm willing to
- 48:57suffer. What you inflict, I'm willing to
- 49:02be. Whatever you require.
- 49:07Is that you? That's what Paul wants, for us
- 49:11to enjoy the grace of God. Let's pray.
- 49:17Father, we thank you for today, One more opportunity for us to
- 49:21hear what Your Word says. Thank you for the opportunity to
- 49:25study this epistle. It's been very convicting, very
- 49:29challenging, at times very confrontive, but always very
- 49:36comforting because it is the Word of God.
- 49:40My prayer for all of us, Lord, is that we would truly, we would
- 49:44truly ensure affection one for another.
- 49:48Enjoy the grace that you you offer and pray that we would
- 49:55truly enact and engage in prayer one for another, that we live
- 50:02out this epistle that you wrote so many years ago to the pen of
- 50:08the Apostle Paul. We have read it.
- 50:12We have studied it. Help us Lord to apply it by your
- 50:16grace and for your glory in Jesus name, Amen.
