Speaker 3: along with the current high school basket while coach of

Speaker 3: a Logan Wildcats Mark Hatcher and Wildcat legend Mike Stone,
2:03
Speaker 3: who played on some of those great seventies team late
2:06
Speaker 3: seventies teams for coach akers. That's coming up a little
2:09
Speaker 3: bit later. On Metro News, meteorologist Brian Hughes calls it
2:12
Speaker 3: a pristine day here in the valley, sunny, pleasant, warm,
2:14
Speaker 3: but not oppressive. High' is it going to be the
2:17
Speaker 3: upper eighties, Some scattered storms tonight mainly after midnight, low's
2:19
Speaker 3: of the upper sixties. Tomorrow, heavy rain and storms, low
2:22
Speaker 3: eighties for highs, and then some scattered showers and storms
2:25
Speaker 3: on Friday weekend, though actually looking pretty good, only a
2:28
Speaker 3: slight chance of rain, but pretty nice overall, a tempts
2:31
Speaker 3: in the upper seventies to low eighties. You can download
2:33
Speaker 3: the Metro News television at to follow Brian Hughes and
2:35
Speaker 3: his team of meteorologists and follow along on social media
2:38
Speaker 3: as well. Bringing to the show now, our good friend
2:41
Speaker 3: Millie Snyder. How you doing.
2:42
Speaker 5: I'm doing great. How are you, Dady?
2:43
Speaker 3: I'm doing fine. Thank you.
2:45
Speaker 5: I'm so happy to be here whenever I had that chance.
2:48
Speaker 3: Well, we we like avenue here. Thank you, and your
2:51
Speaker 3: and your fans love having you here as well.
2:53
Speaker 5: Thank you.
2:53
Speaker 3: Because no you're got a few we normally have two
2:59
Speaker 3: to any of them get I get constant text, you
3:02
Speaker 3: know afterwards, saying that how much they like you so? Well,
3:08
Speaker 3: what were you doing in You're doing TV now of
3:10
Speaker 3: course you're queen of all media.
3:13
Speaker 5: You're shocking, you're shocking. No, no, actually I went to
3:17
Speaker 5: wsa Z. In fact, the program is going to be
3:19
Speaker 5: air tomorrow on the eleven o'clock in the morning with
3:24
Speaker 5: She's a lovely hostess. Her name is Susan Nichols and
3:28
Speaker 5: she's great. So with me came one of my members
3:32
Speaker 5: in a dear friend, Fred Albert, and also one of
3:37
Speaker 5: our members. Her name is Carmela Crawford. And one of
3:41
Speaker 5: the reasons is that Carmela sadly has Parkinson's and the
3:46
Speaker 5: Mediterranean lifestyle is the recommended way to eat, not just
3:50
Speaker 5: for people with Parkinson's, but you'd be surprised how many
3:54
Speaker 5: maladies occur in people's lives. And the doctor says the
3:58
Speaker 5: best way to eat is the clean, fresh, wholesome food
4:01
Speaker 5: of Mediterranean because it is not a diet. We don't
4:04
Speaker 5: count calories, and you know, it's just a beautiful way
4:09
Speaker 5: to eat. And it's been around much longer than all
4:12
Speaker 5: of our ages put together. There are apparently. I don't
4:18
Speaker 5: mean apparently, it's not apparent. There are approximately eleven to
4:23
Speaker 5: fifteen countries that border the Mediterranean Sea, and all of
4:27
Speaker 5: those people don't have a lot of disease. They live
4:31
Speaker 5: for a long time, and there's been some studies. Why
4:34
Speaker 5: are these people living so long? And there's nothing wrong
4:38
Speaker 5: with them, and it's because of the quality of the
4:41
Speaker 5: way they eat. They eat fresh, clean food, no chemicals,
4:46
Speaker 5: no processing, no fast food, and they eat better than
4:50
Speaker 5: the rest of the world. And that's the idea behind
4:54
Speaker 5: people joining our Mediterranean group that we have available here
4:58
Speaker 5: in Charlestow.
5:00
Speaker 3: I think it's important to note that we talk about
5:03
Speaker 3: quality of life too, because I mean, it's not uncommon
5:06
Speaker 3: these days for people to live to be, you know,
5:09
Speaker 3: in their late eighties, early to mid nineties. But you
5:12
Speaker 3: want to have a good quality of life too, And
5:14
Speaker 3: that's one of the things I've learned from you is
5:16
Speaker 3: people that follow this diet not only do they live
5:18
Speaker 3: I mean, it's one thing to live long, but to
5:20
Speaker 3: have a good quality of life as well.
5:22
Speaker 5: And as many people know, because I came here when
5:25
Speaker 5: I was twenty seven and I've been here forever. Almost
5:29
Speaker 5: next month, I'm going to be eighty four, and no
5:32
Speaker 5: one believes that I'm eighty four because I don't look
5:35
Speaker 5: like I'm eighty four.
5:36
Speaker 3: And what day's your birthday on again?
5:37
Speaker 5: October nineteenth.
5:38
Speaker 3: Well, that's that's two months from now. Oh, I forgot
5:41
Speaker 3: about September Dewiterranean may also cause brain fog. I'm kidding.
5:45
Speaker 3: It's okay, it's okay, because my birthday is in September.
5:48
Speaker 5: So I was in September. What is that twenty third? Oh? Wow,
5:51
Speaker 5: September twenty that's the day back in nineteen sixty nine
5:55
Speaker 5: that we open weight watchers September twenty third, nineteen sixty nine.
6:01
Speaker 5: It was an a remarkable thing.
6:03
Speaker 3: I wasn't born yet, but I was born the following year.
6:06
Speaker 5: Oh you're born in seventy yeah. Oh, so you're getting old.
6:10
Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, I'm.
6:12
Speaker 5: So complimentary this morning. Yeah, but Mediterranean is the way
6:16
Speaker 5: to go. And you know, one of the things that
6:18
Speaker 5: I worry about, and that's so many, hundreds of thousands
6:22
Speaker 5: of people are taking the shots for weight loss, and
6:25
Speaker 5: we're beginning to see some very disparaging news coming up
6:28
Speaker 5: around the use of the shots because people don't want
6:32
Speaker 5: to continue the medication and they haven't learned how to eat,
6:36
Speaker 5: they're gaining their weight back. And I can tell you
6:40
Speaker 5: with no fudging of my words, because I don't fudge anyway. No,
6:46
Speaker 5: it's not worth it. It's got too much sugar in it anyway.
6:50
Speaker 5: And sugar is something I can eat occasionally, but it's
6:53
Speaker 5: not a big thing like it used to be. But
6:56
Speaker 5: the thing is that if you don't learn how to eat,
6:58
Speaker 5: what have you put in place to support you moving forward?
7:03
Speaker 5: Once you stop taking that? You know, in these years,
7:06
Speaker 5: I can tell you, honestly, nothing is sadder then watch
7:11
Speaker 5: a person have the success of weight loss only to
7:14
Speaker 5: turn around and gain that back. It hurts and be
7:18
Speaker 5: it physically and physically and yeah, physically for sure, but
7:23
Speaker 5: it's also personally demoralizing. And that's why I want to
7:27
Speaker 5: keep saying this message. Let's teach people how to eat
7:31
Speaker 5: and celebrate the fact that good, wonderful food is the
7:34
Speaker 5: way to go.
7:36
Speaker 3: Texas Milly, I've been eating Mediterranean for a few months now,
7:39
Speaker 3: and I've lost weight and feel better. But I noticed
7:41
Speaker 3: the other day that I've not been sick for quite
7:43
Speaker 3: a while. I was for sure if you had noticed
7:45
Speaker 3: any correlation between that, or if it's just coincidence.
7:48
Speaker 5: No, it's not coincidence, because a lot of people enjoy
7:52
Speaker 5: much better wellness when they're eating clean, fresh food. I'm
7:56
Speaker 5: happy to hear that because that simply puts another stamp
7:59
Speaker 5: of approval that if you don't feel well, there's a
8:02
Speaker 5: reason for it, because you're putting some foreign bodies into
8:05
Speaker 5: your system. You know, there are chemicals, there are preservatives
8:10
Speaker 5: in the food, and our body doesn't know what the
8:12
Speaker 5: heck to do with it. So it causes problems when
8:16
Speaker 5: why don't we feel good, why don't we sleep well?
8:19
Speaker 5: Because there's stuff going into our bodies through our food
8:23
Speaker 5: source that the body says, I don't like this, and
8:26
Speaker 5: I'm going to give you some aggravation as a result.
8:29
Speaker 5: Here's a person who is saying the same thing. I've
8:31
Speaker 5: been eating Mediterranean now for a while and i haven't
8:34
Speaker 5: been sick. Wow, whoever you are, please make yourself known.
8:39
Speaker 5: That's incredible. Well, and i' we're happy for you.
8:42
Speaker 3: And I think too, And I think I brought this
8:44
Speaker 3: up and I may have brought this up with you
8:45
Speaker 3: when you were on the show once before. When it
8:48
Speaker 3: comes to things like bread, if you get fresh and
8:51
Speaker 3: I know bread is not always the best thing in
8:52
Speaker 3: the world to eat.
8:53
Speaker 5: I'm buy bread is fine for Mediterranean if you buy
8:56
Speaker 5: the right kind of That's what I was going to say,
8:58
Speaker 5: just don't buy white bread.
8:59
Speaker 3: Well, but I I have my wife and I talked
9:01
Speaker 3: about this once before that she bought a loaf of
9:04
Speaker 3: bread and and and it was not It wasn't a
9:08
Speaker 3: white bread, but it was one of the major packages,
9:11
Speaker 3: you know, one of the major companies, and it somehow
9:14
Speaker 3: got We have a bread box, and it somehow got
9:16
Speaker 3: pushed to the back. She got it out. She goes, oh,
9:18
Speaker 3: I forgot about this bread. And she pulled it out
9:20
Speaker 3: and it wasn't green. It should have been green.
9:23
Speaker 5: But that's a worry right there, because it because what
9:27
Speaker 5: is in it?
9:27
Speaker 3: What sort of preservative is in it that made it
9:29
Speaker 3: not turn green after a month.
9:31
Speaker 5: Years ago I heard this story. I'll try to make
9:33
Speaker 5: it short because it's part and parcel with what your
9:35
Speaker 5: wife found in the bread box. There was nothing wrong
9:38
Speaker 5: with the bread. Somebody went out and bought like little
9:42
Speaker 5: little Debbie cakes and bringing their groceries in from the house,
9:47
Speaker 5: something fell out of the bag in the back of
9:50
Speaker 5: the car and they never they forgot about it. Well,
9:54
Speaker 5: two days later they found it in the car and
9:57
Speaker 5: it was imperfectly soft, ready to eat place because it
10:01
Speaker 5: has so many preservatives and it tastes good in your mouth.
10:06
Speaker 5: But that's the end of the story.
10:09
Speaker 3: So talking to Millie Snyder today aland showing five any
10:12
Speaker 3: line is broad to bared by Morgan to Morgan, America's
10:14
Speaker 3: largest injury law firm.
10:15
Speaker 5: If you're injured, visit for thepeople dot com.
10:17
Speaker 3: What have you been up to lately? I mean, I
10:18
Speaker 3: know you said you're on tail, you are doing the
10:21
Speaker 3: TV thing yesterday, but what else have you been doing
10:24
Speaker 3: other than the classes? Because I know you're always up
10:26
Speaker 3: to something. You're always doing something.
10:28
Speaker 5: Well, not a lot, you know. I try to keep
10:30
Speaker 5: myself busy doing this, that and the other, but just
10:33
Speaker 5: making plans for getting into the fall season. There's some
10:37
Speaker 5: happy things happening in the family. There's a big wedding
10:40
Speaker 5: in Georgetown, and I'm looking forward to going to that
10:45
Speaker 5: and being able to catch up with family after. You're
10:47
Speaker 5: gonna have a piece of cake maybe because by the way,
10:51
Speaker 5: dessert is allowed on Mediterranean but not a half a
10:54
Speaker 5: cake piece. You know, did you eat with a fork?
10:57
Speaker 5: And you know and yes, of course I.
11:00
Speaker 3: A little sliver, and that's what I want because I
11:02
Speaker 3: have you on every month, and I want to people
11:04
Speaker 3: to make sure that people realize that with this Mediterranean
11:07
Speaker 3: it's any sort of a wellness plan or healthy eating whatever.
11:12
Speaker 3: It's not that you can't have these things. You just
11:13
Speaker 3: can't have it all the time. You can have a
11:15
Speaker 3: piece of cake.
11:17
Speaker 5: There are some people who have. I know a guy
11:20
Speaker 5: in Clarksburg who has to have a whole cake every day.
11:24
Speaker 5: He is addicted to sugar and it has affected his movement.
11:29
Speaker 5: He the man lives in pain twenty four to seven
11:33
Speaker 5: because sugar is playing havoc with his body. But in
11:36
Speaker 5: his mouth, that cake that's sweet is heavenly.
11:41
Speaker 3: So what can you substitute? Because a lot of people
11:45
Speaker 3: have a sweet tears substitute well, our friend Colonel Ron Hughes,
11:48
Speaker 3: for example, I'm gonna throw Ron under the bus. Ron
11:50
Speaker 3: Ron never met the sweets that he didn't like. I'm
11:52
Speaker 3: more of a meat and cheese eater myself.
11:54
Speaker 5: I'm readily I could identify with you.
11:57
Speaker 3: I could take or leave the sweets. I've always been
11:59
Speaker 3: that way, to be honest with you. But for people
12:02
Speaker 3: that have that sweet tooth and people that think I
12:04
Speaker 3: have to have something sweet, you would say, what.
12:08
Speaker 5: Dave, We have so many beautiful alternatives, many desserts that
12:12
Speaker 5: you can make that are Mediterranean recipes, and also to
12:16
Speaker 5: enjoy fresh fruit. And I'm not just talking about an
12:19
Speaker 5: apple or an orange. I'm talking about berries and the
12:22
Speaker 5: things that you can do to them. I make a
12:25
Speaker 5: granola in my house with oatmeal and almonds and maple syrup.
12:31
Speaker 5: It is absolutely I'm going to bring it to you
12:33
Speaker 5: next month.
12:33
Speaker 3: I wish you would. It is the big birthday present
12:36
Speaker 3: for me.
12:37
Speaker 5: That's right. Well it's September nineteenth, right, twenty third, Well
12:41
Speaker 5: I was close. Nineteen's my anniversary, so nineteen's my birthday.
12:44
Speaker 5: The twenty third is your birthda.
12:46
Speaker 3: But that's your birthdays in October.
12:47
Speaker 5: That's right. Thank you all right for reminding me.
12:50
Speaker 3: But I'm got all this taking down Ryan who whenever?
12:52
Speaker 5: But yeah, then you can you can give me that
12:55
Speaker 5: recording back. But anyway, I'd like to bring you some
12:58
Speaker 5: my granola. But we make some of the best desserts
13:01
Speaker 5: and very easy recipes to follow using fruits and other combinations,
13:06
Speaker 5: and a lot of people are amazed when they try
13:09
Speaker 5: those recipes. I had no idea it was going to
13:12
Speaker 5: be this good. So there are so many alternatives. But
13:16
Speaker 5: when you say to somebody you can't have sugar, they
13:18
Speaker 5: become panic because they have something that resembles a bit
13:23
Speaker 5: of an addiction to sugar.
13:25
Speaker 3: Texas, merely, are there pet friendly Mediterranean meals that are
13:29
Speaker 3: safe for them and easy to.
13:30
Speaker 5: Make pet friendly?
13:32
Speaker 3: Pet friendly?
13:33
Speaker 5: Well, not off the top of my head, but I'm
13:35
Speaker 5: sure that they would love to have well Yoya giving
13:39
Speaker 5: a dog salmon and sardines and certain vegetables. My goodness, yes,
13:46
Speaker 5: there are dogs who absolutely love to have the real deal, Texas.
13:52
Speaker 3: Can you or I'm sorry, Dave, you can substitute monk
13:56
Speaker 3: fruit with.
14:00
Speaker 5: Well Monk fruit is another erythritol product, Okay, and it's
14:05
Speaker 5: we don't even want to call it artificial sweetener, but
14:08
Speaker 5: it is derived from a fruit, from a fruit base,
14:13
Speaker 5: and you can use stevia. You can use monk fruit
14:17
Speaker 5: and other products that are made in the form of
14:21
Speaker 5: a erythritol which is replacing real sugar. I don't want
14:25
Speaker 5: to call it artificial because erythritol actually grows in stevia,
14:32
Speaker 5: the source. It grows in tropical climates and then you
14:35
Speaker 5: take that and then it's the manufacturing is just drying
14:38
Speaker 5: it out and making it down into a powder. But
14:41
Speaker 5: we can't call stevia artificial sweetener. It's another type of sweetener,
14:46
Speaker 5: just not a sugar sweetener. Now you can do some
14:49
Speaker 5: incredible things with stevia erythritol monk fruit. So there are many,
14:54
Speaker 5: many possibilities.
14:56
Speaker 3: Willie Snyder remind people where and when we meet it.

18:21
Speaker 3: little friend, How you doing?
18:23
Speaker 7: I got your rock in the five Street shirt there,
18:25
Speaker 7: just trying to stay on brand.
18:27
Speaker 3: Okay, uh so, uh appreciate you stopping by. Thank you man.
18:31
Speaker 3: And tomorrow night we're gonna do a real special in
18:35
Speaker 3: at five Street, our sister station ninety eight seven, a
18:37
Speaker 3: mountain wild, wonderful classic rock. We are there. Generally speaking,
18:41
Speaker 3: it kind of varies, but it's like the you know,
18:43
Speaker 3: first and third. Generally speaking, first and third thursdays of
18:46
Speaker 3: the month, we do a thing called Thursday Thursday. Steve
18:49
Speaker 3: Animal and Shockley and others, myself and others are over
18:52
Speaker 3: at five Street, but you're going to be hanging out.
18:55
Speaker 10: We're tag teaming yeah, tax you and I would say yeah,
18:57
Speaker 10: the Mountain and Mountain Stage, and we had a good
19:00
Speaker 10: time in January when we were partnering up together.
19:02
Speaker 7: We had a great time, had some live music.
19:04
Speaker 10: We're not gonna do the live music thing this week
19:06
Speaker 10: just because John has a lot of other stuff planning
19:08
Speaker 10: to start. Actually well, John Ingram is on the road,
19:11
Speaker 10: but then also John Qivee Street has some plans going
19:15
Speaker 10: forward for the weekend and so but what we're gonna
19:17
Speaker 10: do is listen to some music. We've got some free giveaways.
19:20
Speaker 10: I know the Mountain always does that. We're gonna give
19:22
Speaker 10: away some tickets to Mountain Stage this Sunday, and then
19:24
Speaker 10: we're also talking a little bit about our Mountain Stage's
19:27
Speaker 10: forty third anniversary show, which is in December, which seems
19:30
Speaker 10: like a long time from now, but it actually isn't.
19:32
Speaker 7: All right, but we just announced.
19:34
Speaker 10: That Fred Tackett and Scott Schirard of Little Feet are
19:37
Speaker 10: going to do a special acoustic appearance this December, December
19:41
Speaker 10: sixth on Mountain Stage, and those tickets we're gonna put
19:43
Speaker 10: them on sale Thursday at five o'clock, so you can
19:45
Speaker 10: get them online or swing by Thirsty Thursday and we're
19:49
Speaker 10: gonna have a.
19:49
Speaker 7: Setup right there.
19:50
Speaker 10: You can even avoid some of the ticket fees if
19:52
Speaker 10: you want to get your tickets for December direct.
19:55
Speaker 7: Yep.
19:55
Speaker 3: And I'll tell you what, man, I am a huge
19:57
Speaker 3: Little Feed fan. I discovered Little Feet, I guess. I
20:01
Speaker 3: was working into Classic Rock station in Ohio and we
20:05
Speaker 3: did a lot of Little Feet. I was really not
20:06
Speaker 3: that familiar with them, and then I got the waiting
20:09
Speaker 3: for Columbus album Nice and of course Dixie Chicken where
20:14
Speaker 3: the Dixie Chicks got their names right, Chicken Willing. I mean,
20:18
Speaker 3: I can do a killer karaoke version of Willing Well.
20:20
Speaker 3: It's not very good, but I have fun will Well.
20:23
Speaker 10: And that's one reason I wanted to come on and
20:25
Speaker 10: talk with Steve Animal, because I know a lot of
20:27
Speaker 10: those classic rock listeners you know, have a great affinity
20:29
Speaker 10: for Little Feet, and you know god Fred Tackett Man,
20:32
Speaker 10: I've just been looking at his discography and he's on
20:35
Speaker 10: a ton of albums. He's one of the most recorded
20:39
Speaker 10: studio musicians of all time. A lot of people don't
20:41
Speaker 10: know that, but he's also a recording artist and obviously
20:44
Speaker 10: has been playing guitar I believe with Little Feet since
20:46
Speaker 10: eighty eight, and then Scott Schirard has their vocalist, has
20:49
Speaker 10: been the vocalist and a guitarist in Little Feet since
20:52
Speaker 10: twenty nineteen, but he's been carrying that torch of Lowell
20:55
Speaker 10: George since then. And Little Feet had did kind of
20:58
Speaker 10: their farewell last Farewell tour recently, which I don't think
21:01
Speaker 10: they're gonna give up playing generally, but I think they're
21:03
Speaker 10: going to give.
21:04
Speaker 7: Up larger tours. But uh, that be that as it may.
21:08
Speaker 10: Fred and Scott from Littlefeed are doing a first ever
21:11
Speaker 10: acoustic tour and I can't wait to hear this, just
21:13
Speaker 10: because they have such storied histories between them. You know,
21:16
Speaker 10: they've played with everybody, and this is going to be
21:18
Speaker 10: a great storytellers type idea. I presume when they join
21:22
Speaker 10: us on Mountain Stage in December.
21:23
Speaker 3: All right, and again, if you tickets are going to
21:26
Speaker 3: go on sale, when did you say.
21:27
Speaker 10: Tomorrow at five o'clock, We're gonna put them on sale
21:30
Speaker 10: for Thirsty Thursday. But that's when they go. Yeah, they're
21:35
Speaker 10: on so to our members right now. Mountain Stage members
21:37
Speaker 10: have had early access, but you.
21:39
Speaker 3: Could come and buy them directly, directly and and and
21:42
Speaker 3: just forego some.
21:43
Speaker 7: Of those tickets to fees exactly.
21:45
Speaker 10: Yeah, if you buy them, we're going to have our
21:46
Speaker 10: friend Jen Brown's going to be there at Thirsty Thursday.
21:48
Speaker 10: So anybody that's interested in getting their ticket for this December,
21:51
Speaker 10: and I presume this show will sell out. It's especially
21:53
Speaker 10: with us announcing it this far in advance that I
21:55
Speaker 10: think a lot of people are going to show interest,
21:57
Speaker 10: uh and be coming out of town. So if you
21:59
Speaker 10: want to get them early, you can come join us
22:00
Speaker 10: at Thirsty Thursday and you can take advantage of that
22:03
Speaker 10: as well as a ton of other giveaways as there
22:06
Speaker 10: always are when the Mountain comes down for Thirsty Thursday.
22:08
Speaker 10: Well five Street Brewings.
22:10
Speaker 3: Speaking of the mountain coming down. Look who's here, ladies
22:13
Speaker 3: and gentlemen.
22:14
Speaker 7: This is live radio.
22:15
Speaker 3: This is what I'm Steve Animal who for some reason,
22:17
Speaker 3: there's two microphones like he's a president. Can you hear
22:21
Speaker 3: me now?
22:22
Speaker 7: Testing one?
22:22
Speaker 3: Two, three?
22:23
Speaker 7: That's it?
22:24
Speaker 3: Yeah, how are you brother? Where have you been in.
22:27
Speaker 11: The other studio? Running through the building. It's going to
22:30
Speaker 11: keep this boyish figure, you know, we have a company
22:32
Speaker 11: here right, Adam earlier in my studio. Good to see
22:36
Speaker 11: you again, Bro, thank you man, Thank you about Thursday.
22:38
Speaker 11: Thursday tomorrow night at five Street Brewing you always a
22:40
Speaker 11: good guys will be there. Yes, the Mountain meets Mountain stage,
22:44
Speaker 11: which is awesome. Last time it was phenomenal. Bob Thompson
22:48
Speaker 11: was there, John Ingram, Jeff Shirley, the rest of the crew,
22:51
Speaker 11: people I haven't seen in years. It's a lot of fun.
22:54
Speaker 11: And if you haven't been down to Fifth Street yet,
22:56
Speaker 11: right across from Slack Plaza, there's free parking in the
22:59
Speaker 11: summer street rise right after six o'clock. But it's always
23:02
Speaker 11: a good time. You can sit outside, sit inside. The
23:06
Speaker 11: sandwiches are great.
23:07
Speaker 7: It's going to be a beautiful day.
23:08
Speaker 3: Yeah.
23:09
Speaker 7: My T shirt has the grilled cheeses on there. That's
23:10
Speaker 7: what they're known for.
23:11
Speaker 11: Yeah, they're very good. Home to Animal Ale, which we
23:15
Speaker 11: will have some more to be released in the near future,
23:18
Speaker 11: looking forward to.
23:19
Speaker 3: Now this Animal Ale this is your own beer that
23:21
Speaker 3: they named after you. Yesul what did you say? It
23:24
Speaker 3: was full of flavor, goodness and bad decisions and bad decisions, Yes,
23:31
Speaker 3: very minimal hope.
23:34
Speaker 11: Yeah, we have flowers from Art's flowers. They give away
23:36
Speaker 11: gift certificates Mountain merch t shirts while they last, and yeah,
23:40
Speaker 11: it's always a good time.
23:41
Speaker 12: Man.
23:41
Speaker 11: It's still summer so and our walk is going on.
23:44
Speaker 7: Oh sweet, I have the weather's going to be perfect. Man,
23:47
Speaker 7: this is gonna be a great day.
23:48
Speaker 1: Yeah.
23:48
Speaker 11: So definitely Thursday, Thursday the Animal House Style at Fife.
23:53
Speaker 7: Good time.
23:53
Speaker 11: And I appreciate the partnership with Mountain Stage. You guys
23:57
Speaker 11: have always been a fan of Mountain Stage for years,
24:00
Speaker 11: all the great shows that have come and gone, and
24:02
Speaker 11: you know, we rock, you rock.
24:04
Speaker 13: Thank you.
24:04
Speaker 8: Yeah.
24:04
Speaker 7: I think as a tag team were undefeated.
24:06
Speaker 3: I like it.
24:07
Speaker 7: Everybody rock, oh yeah at that point.
24:09
Speaker 3: At that point, so talk about I mean we were
24:13
Speaker 3: mentioning the shows that are come up in December, talking
24:15
Speaker 3: about some little closer.
24:17
Speaker 10: Yeah this Sunday, Actually, Mountain Stage. We've got a great
24:19
Speaker 10: for your bluegrass lovers out there. We've got the one
24:22
Speaker 10: and only Tony Trishka, who actually taught Bayla Fleck. I mean,
24:24
Speaker 10: I think if most people know a banjo player, it's
24:26
Speaker 10: probably Baila Fleck. Well, his teacher was Tony Trishka, and
24:29
Speaker 10: that's why they call him one of the fathers of
24:30
Speaker 10: bluegrass music, of new grass that is rather because he
24:34
Speaker 10: kind of made the progressive transition from the kind of
24:36
Speaker 10: traditional bluegrass that you think of with Earl Scruggs, but
24:38
Speaker 10: also into the progressive world of more composed music and
24:41
Speaker 10: arranged versions of using bluegrass instruments. And he's got a
24:45
Speaker 10: new project that's based off some jams between John Hartford
24:48
Speaker 10: and Earl Scruggs. So if those aren't obscure names for you,
24:51
Speaker 10: then you know how special that is. And so but
24:54
Speaker 10: no matter what, when you come to Mountain Stage, no
24:56
Speaker 10: matter what you expect, you're always gonna walk away a
24:58
Speaker 10: fan of something new. And I really think supporting live
25:01
Speaker 10: music is like a radical behavior these days, just getting
25:04
Speaker 10: people out of the house. And so I hope people
25:06
Speaker 10: will rebel against the norm, leave the house, come watch
25:09
Speaker 10: some fingers touching strings, some live, handmade music, and you'll
25:12
Speaker 10: be glad you did this.
25:13
Speaker 7: Sunday Mountain Stage.
25:15
Speaker 10: More free parking at the Culture Center Theater on the
25:18
Speaker 10: State Capitol Grounds. That's this Sunday at seven o'clock. Mountain Stage.
25:21
Speaker 10: Dot org is where you can find our whole schedule.
25:23
Speaker 11: You know my motto, if it's for free, it's for me,
25:26
Speaker 11: that's right, Free ninety nine.
25:27
Speaker 3: Yeah, you can't beat free ninety nine one percent. And
25:31
Speaker 3: how many years has Mountain Stage been around?
25:33
Speaker 10: So this is we're wrapping up our forty thirty year.
25:36
Speaker 10: Yeah yeah, and so next year's number forty four and
25:38
Speaker 10: we're gonna be Jerry West years old.
25:40
Speaker 3: Yeah, excellent. And no, I mean when this thing first started,
25:44
Speaker 3: and I'm familiar with the story, I wasn't around. I
25:47
Speaker 3: mean I wasn't around, but I was living, you know
25:49
Speaker 3: at that point. But I was a kid, I remember.
25:53
Speaker 3: You know, there were some I don't want to say naysayers,
25:55
Speaker 3: but some people that just kind of were like, I
25:57
Speaker 3: don't know if this thing is gonna work. Well, it
25:59
Speaker 3: just gets bigger and better every year.
26:02
Speaker 10: Yeah, it turns out it's you know, a lot of
26:04
Speaker 10: people might have said, like, you can't do a show
26:06
Speaker 10: like this in West Virginia, but Larry Gross, our founder,
26:09
Speaker 10: and he was the host and artistic director for forty years,
26:13
Speaker 10: he always knew it could be done here. And it
26:15
Speaker 10: turns out, and I think he's right that this is
26:17
Speaker 10: the only place we could do this. If Mountain Stage
26:19
Speaker 10: were in a big city, even like DC or Philadelphia
26:22
Speaker 10: or New York. There's a lot of pressures that come
26:23
Speaker 10: from the outside music world that are going to influence
26:27
Speaker 10: the decisions that are made. And not to mention, when
26:29
Speaker 10: you're in a major market like that, artists want to
26:31
Speaker 10: get paid, you know. Meanwhile, here in West Virginia, folks
26:34
Speaker 10: are often passing through. They understand the aspect of our show,
26:39
Speaker 10: the ratio, the reason you do it is for a
26:41
Speaker 10: promotional purpose, you know. And we're only going to sell
26:43
Speaker 10: four hundred and sixty tickets no matter what, you know.
26:45
Speaker 10: And so I think we could only have done Mountain
26:48
Speaker 10: Stage the way we've done it from here, and you know,
26:51
Speaker 10: and I think some people thought, why don't you do
26:53
Speaker 10: more bluegrass music? Well, that would get kind of boring
26:55
Speaker 10: after a while. Yeah, I don't want to have all
26:56
Speaker 10: bluegrass music all the time.
26:58
Speaker 3: Right Mountain Stage is and I've been you know, is
27:01
Speaker 3: that if you don't like the type music, stick around.
27:04
Speaker 7: Yeah, listen to the next fifteen or twenty minutes later,
27:06
Speaker 7: somebody else is coming up.
27:07
Speaker 3: And so many of the artists Adam reach out to
27:10
Speaker 3: you guys about coming on. They want to come on.
27:12
Speaker 3: And I always go back to the early nineteen nineties.
27:16
Speaker 3: I want to say ninety one or ninety two, RAM
27:19
Speaker 3: did like two shows that year. Yeah, and they chose
27:22
Speaker 3: to do Mountain Sage. Other I think was Saturday not.
27:23
Speaker 10: Like they did SNL, MTV Unplugged and Mountain Stage. So
27:26
Speaker 10: that's three shows. Yeah, and they but they reached out.
27:28
Speaker 10: They wanted to be a part.
27:29
Speaker 7: Of that's right.
27:30
Speaker 10: Yeah, And since then there's a lot of artists that
27:32
Speaker 10: have become known have found out about Mountain Stage because
27:35
Speaker 10: of that. And you know, same with like, you know
27:37
Speaker 10: a Patty Smith who came to see us not a
27:39
Speaker 10: few years ago when she was here for the West
27:40
Speaker 10: Virginia Music Hall of Fame. Steven Wilson Junior's team reached
27:45
Speaker 10: out to us, you know. I mean he's kind of
27:46
Speaker 10: a guy that was on the way up, you know,
27:48
Speaker 10: and probably didn't have to do our show, but he
27:50
Speaker 10: knew it was like one of those things that an
27:52
Speaker 10: artist wants to check off off the list, you know.
27:54
Speaker 10: And at this point, being around forty three years, people
27:58
Speaker 10: see it as as a legacy program, even though we're
28:00
Speaker 10: still doing new shows.
28:01
Speaker 11: Every week and forty three Richard Petty would be good call,
28:05
Speaker 11: good call much all right, Thursday Thursday is we just
28:09
Speaker 11: got our color scheme is tomorrow is.
28:11
Speaker 3: Tomorrow night at five Street Brewing Coviedy, which located on
28:13
Speaker 3: Summer Street. The Mountain will be live. Steve Animal will
28:16
Speaker 3: be there. Adam, You're going to be there. We'll have
28:19
Speaker 3: early tickets for that to that show coming up in December.
28:22
Speaker 3: Appreciate you stopping by the studio.
28:24
Speaker 14: Thank you.
28:24
Speaker 3: What about me? Well, you and I. Actually this is
28:27
Speaker 3: going to be my next thing. I'm going to promote, Adam.
28:29
Speaker 3: If you need something to do next Thursday night, Animal
28:32
Speaker 3: and I will be with the Marshall University Quarterback Club
28:34
Speaker 3: at Charleston the annual Paint the Capital City Green event
28:38
Speaker 3: next Thursday night that the bill No Flight School. Tony
28:41
Speaker 3: Gibson's going to be there, the head coach of the Herd,
28:43
Speaker 3: several other coaches including Corney Jackson and Gerald Harrison. The
28:47
Speaker 3: athletic director Steve Cotton, the voice of the Thundering Herd,
28:51
Speaker 3: will be there. Little round tables and this event, if
28:54
Speaker 3: it's not already sold out, it probably will because it
28:56
Speaker 3: sells out every year. Get your tickets at herdzone dot
28:58
Speaker 3: com or by calling three zero four six nine six
29:01
Speaker 3: forty six sixty one. And for some reason they thought
29:03
Speaker 3: it would be a good idea yet again to have
29:05
Speaker 3: Animal and I amc this.
29:06
Speaker 11: Is I don't understand, but I guess it's a higher
29:08
Speaker 11: power either Tony Stroud. Maybe Brad said, hey, these guys
29:15
Speaker 11: are okay. I mean we we cleared security last time.
29:17
Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
29:19
Speaker 1: But if it was.
29:20
Speaker 3: There was that incident our first year we did it
29:22
Speaker 3: with the airplane. If you remember the airplane incident crawling.
29:24
Speaker 3: Apparently they just they have they have their planes on
29:27
Speaker 3: display out there and just so you know, they don't
29:31
Speaker 3: look favorably on people bimbing it. He's getting inside the airplane.
29:35
Speaker 3: I won't mention anyone's name. Rhyme with Steve Animal.
29:39
Speaker 11: And when the key turned and the engine fired up,
29:42
Speaker 11: I mean it's like, all right, it's like Disney, no
29:46
Speaker 11: planes for you.
29:46
Speaker 3: All right, fine, Adam, See you appreciate you guys being here.
29:49
Speaker 3: Twenty three minutes away from ten. We'll take a break
29:51
Speaker 3: and come back after this on the Voice of Charleston
29:53
Speaker 3: w HS.
29:55
Speaker 1: Brought to you by the Eric J. Tar Family Businesses.
29:58
Speaker 2: Eric J. Tar Family Businesses want to thank you for
30:01

32:06
Speaker 3: Logan lost the legend last night my hometown with the
32:09
Speaker 3: passion of Willie Akers and Uh, I've got me. I've
32:12
Speaker 3: got with me in the Jeri Construction studios this morning
32:14
Speaker 3: to carry the segment because I don't know by whether
32:16
Speaker 3: I can get through it or not. The voice of
32:18
Speaker 3: high school Sports and West in West Virginia, Fred Pursinger,
32:21
Speaker 3: Good morning.
32:22
Speaker 4: Sir, Good morning, and real quick, you said Logan lost
32:26
Speaker 4: the legend, I say, the state of West Virginia.
32:28
Speaker 3: Yeah lost. Oh yeah yeah. We'll go down that a
32:30
Speaker 3: little bit later on the Guarantee Bank Hotline. We have
32:33
Speaker 3: current Logan basketball coach Mark Hatsher. Good morning, sir, welcome
32:37
Speaker 3: to the show.
32:38
Speaker 14: Hey Dave, Hey Fred, how you guys.
32:40
Speaker 3: We're doing good and wild Cat Legend. Mike Stone is
32:43
Speaker 3: with us as well.
32:43
Speaker 18: Good morning, Michael, Good morning, day, Good morning, Fred.
32:46
Speaker 3: Good morning.
32:47
Speaker 5: All right.
32:47
Speaker 3: Well, now that now that we know that everybody is here, uh, Fred,
32:51
Speaker 3: I'm going to start with you as somebody who's covered
32:53
Speaker 3: high school sports, uh and sports in general for a
32:56
Speaker 3: long long time, there was there was only one coach, akers.
33:00
Speaker 4: Man, there was I've been very very fortunate in my
33:05
Speaker 4: years of covering high school basketball since that's what we'll
33:08
Speaker 4: talk about, and going to places that for a long time,
33:12
Speaker 4: I think a lot of folks know that I covered
33:14
Speaker 4: the Beckley Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagles, and there were a
33:18
Speaker 4: lot of places that as an announcer, when you followed
33:22
Speaker 4: a particular team, you went to and the logan was
33:27
Speaker 4: two things. Number One, you were assured you're going to
33:32
Speaker 4: get a great game because Beckley always had great teams.
33:34
Speaker 4: Logan had great teams. But Logan is, and I mean
33:38
Speaker 4: this sincerely, there were two places that I think fans
33:41
Speaker 4: came to to see not just the team, but the coach.
33:47
Speaker 4: Now I would throw Dave Barksdale from Beckley into that
33:52
Speaker 4: because of his antheics, but I think a lot of
33:55
Speaker 4: folks came to Logan to watch, as we say, and
33:59
Speaker 4: true legend Willie Akers and his running Wildcats, because you
34:03
Speaker 4: knew you were going to get a great game. You
34:06
Speaker 4: knew that, I mean, and it wasn't going to be
34:08
Speaker 4: over until it was over. But to me, such a
34:13
Speaker 4: class act Willie Acres. I don't care what he had
34:16
Speaker 4: going for me personally. He always had time. And I
34:20
Speaker 4: think that's the one thing about Willie that sticks out
34:24
Speaker 4: in my mind. No matter what was going on, no
34:27
Speaker 4: matter how big the game, whether it was a state
34:29
Speaker 4: championship game that he was preparing the Wildcats for whatever
34:33
Speaker 4: it was. If I called, he would take time. And
34:37
Speaker 4: that is huge when you know a coach and Mark
34:39
Speaker 4: can tell you this, you got three thousand things running
34:43
Speaker 4: through your mind right before a game. Radio GA talk
34:46
Speaker 4: exactly right, But Willie Acres And then I'll give Mark
34:50
Speaker 4: Catcher credit.
34:50
Speaker 3: He's always talked with me as well.
34:52
Speaker 4: But it's just one of those things that stand out
34:54
Speaker 4: in my mind about a guy that was more so
34:58
Speaker 4: much more than a bad basketball player at Mullins High
35:01
Speaker 4: School or whatever at West Virginia and a coach at
35:06
Speaker 4: Logan and where he won seventy eight percent of his games.
35:10
Speaker 4: Think about that, and they didn't dodge anyone. I mean,
35:13
Speaker 4: just like Logan did they play anybody? So just amazing,
35:18
Speaker 4: amazing to me.
35:18
Speaker 3: Coach, let's bring you into this conversation. Your thoughts on
35:22
Speaker 3: Willie akers as a coach.
35:26
Speaker 14: As a coach, I mean, you know, he was the
35:29
Speaker 14: epitome of what we always wanted to be as a coach.
35:31
Speaker 14: That's what you want to be. A guy that just
35:33
Speaker 14: started a program and not he was not just a
35:36
Speaker 14: high school basketball coach. He he made a movement here
35:40
Speaker 14: in the sixties. When he got here, he organized you know,
35:45
Speaker 14: we'd always had great basketball teams before him, but when
35:49
Speaker 14: he got here, he organized it and got it going
35:52
Speaker 14: on the right page. From four or five years old
35:55
Speaker 14: and up. You know, the middle school, junior high coaches
35:57
Speaker 14: were on the same page. The yeah Buddy League coaches
36:01
Speaker 14: were on the same page. I mean, the system was
36:03
Speaker 14: taught from the beginning that you when you started basketball
36:07
Speaker 14: to the end. And you know, being a young boy
36:11
Speaker 14: in the seventies and you know, Mike got to even
36:14
Speaker 14: see that even more than me. But being a part
36:17
Speaker 14: of that. You know, my dad was an assistant coach.
36:19
Speaker 14: My uncle, my dad both played for coach Akers and
36:22
Speaker 14: you know that's the one thing when when you measure
36:25
Speaker 14: a coach, sometimes you can do the wins and losses.
36:27
Speaker 14: And he was unreal in that part of it. But
36:29
Speaker 14: the respect of all of his ex players, I mean,
36:33
Speaker 14: we're talking guys from the sixties I have seen him.
36:36
Speaker 14: I mean it's like they they would go to the
36:38
Speaker 14: King's house. I mean, you know what I'm saying. He
36:41
Speaker 14: he the respect that his ex players have had for
36:44
Speaker 14: him has always been unreal, and he just he just
36:48
Speaker 14: demanded that respect and he set that standard. Fred that
36:52
Speaker 14: that running wildcat system that you know, I hope that
36:56
Speaker 14: we still show so flashes of that today.
36:59
Speaker 3: Mike, you played for Coachhakers. What was the time frame
37:04
Speaker 3: that you played for Coachakers?
37:06
Speaker 18: Seventy six through seventy eight?
37:07
Speaker 3: All right, talk about him as a coach.
37:11
Speaker 18: You know, I think probably a great thing about him
37:14
Speaker 18: as a coach. Anyone that ever watched him knew how
37:20
Speaker 18: he had a temper and how he could get upset
37:23
Speaker 18: and just yell at you. But as soon as practice
37:27
Speaker 18: or as soon as the game was over, he left
37:29
Speaker 18: it on the floor. He was smiling, talking to you friendly.
37:32
Speaker 18: He never carried that anger or that passion or that
37:36
Speaker 18: he never carried that over off the court. It stayed there.
37:40
Speaker 18: And he was a friend to everyone, you know, just
37:46
Speaker 18: a marvelous human being. And it was like he had
37:51
Speaker 18: a story about everybody. I mean, not just his players,
37:54
Speaker 18: but maybe someone in the community that he had when
37:58
Speaker 18: he was teaching school, he's all, you know, let me
38:01
Speaker 18: tell you this guy here one time he did it.
38:03
Speaker 18: You know, he had a story. It seemed like about everybody.
38:06
Speaker 3: You know. A couple of years ago, I went to
38:07
Speaker 3: see Logan play in the shootout that's over at Western
38:11
Speaker 3: New State and uh, and I was there. Actually Willie
38:15
Speaker 3: was there watching and Mark, you may know this from Stone,
38:18
Speaker 3: You may know this, but I do.
38:19
Speaker 12: Was it his.
38:21
Speaker 3: Grandson that played for like one of the schools like
38:24
Speaker 3: in Williamstown or Saint Mary's. He had somebody in his
38:27
Speaker 3: family that played there. I don't remember.
38:31
Speaker 18: That would have been his u.
38:34
Speaker 7: His son's wife's.
38:35
Speaker 3: Okay, that's not.
38:38
Speaker 12: Logan.
38:40
Speaker 14: It wasn't his Grandsonbody wouldn't watch him play anyway.
38:42
Speaker 3: Yeah, well, well, and but my point was is I
38:45
Speaker 3: remember I wanted just somebody said that Coach Akers is here,
38:48
Speaker 3: and uh, he had a group of people all surrounded
38:52
Speaker 3: him just because they wanted to be near Willie Acres.
38:55
Speaker 12: You know.
38:55
Speaker 3: I mean, these are people that weren't the Logan wasn't
38:58
Speaker 3: even playing yet. Logan didn't play it all that. This
39:00
Speaker 3: was an afternoon game, but people wanted to be close
39:03
Speaker 3: to Coach Akers, and he had that kind of effect
39:06
Speaker 3: on people.
39:06
Speaker 14: Mark, Yeah, listen, I could tell you this. When U. B.
39:12
Speaker 14: Brown was a coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, me and
39:14
Speaker 14: my father we wanted to go watch a practice or
39:17
Speaker 14: a couple of days worth of practices we had told
39:20
Speaker 14: Coach Chakers because Jerry West was the general manager where
39:23
Speaker 14: Willy made one phone call of course and it was, hey,
39:26
Speaker 14: you guys are welcome. And when we got there, the
39:29
Speaker 14: way that we were treated by just I mean Jerry
39:33
Speaker 14: stepped right down beside of us and talked to us
39:35
Speaker 14: for two hours. That would have only been possible because
39:38
Speaker 14: Willie as has made that phone call, and you know,
39:41
Speaker 14: and listening to Jerry talk with some old with Uv
39:44
Speaker 14: Brown and like those guys all knew Willy he was
39:48
Speaker 14: in that club. I mean, he had opportunities back in
39:51
Speaker 14: the day to leave Logan hide and go to different levels.
39:54
Speaker 14: And I mean, I'm pretty sure Jerry asked me numerous times,
39:58
Speaker 14: you know, you want me to and Coach Akers was
40:01
Speaker 14: just a Logan guy, you know, That's just what he
40:03
Speaker 14: wanted to do. He wanted to be here and stay here.
40:05
Speaker 14: But his his touch, you know, it was amazing. Just
40:11
Speaker 14: after that, I was like, you know, Coach Akers is
40:13
Speaker 14: known throughout this whole country on the basketball level. It was.
40:17
Speaker 14: It was pretty unreal.
40:18
Speaker 3: You know, Mike, when you played for Willie, talk about
40:21
Speaker 3: the lessons that you learned from Willie. That weren't necessarily
40:25
Speaker 3: x's and o's on the clipboard.
40:27
Speaker 18: Well, probably the main thing is discipline. You know, there
40:33
Speaker 18: was an old thing that disciplines love. He commanded that
40:38
Speaker 18: all of us, you know, you know, you never talked back.
40:43
Speaker 18: You knew how to act out in public when they
40:46
Speaker 18: took us for a pregame meal or restaurant or whatever. Uh,
40:50
Speaker 18: you know, he taught us, you know, how to sit there,
40:53
Speaker 18: how to order. I mean, it was just it was
40:55
Speaker 18: more than just basketball. It was like life lessons that
40:58
Speaker 18: we learned through him them and uh, you know had
41:03
Speaker 18: to touch on something marks that you know Mark's talking about,
41:08
Speaker 18: uh you know, Hubee Brown and stuff. When I was
41:12
Speaker 18: growing up, of course, they had a Jerry West camp.
41:14
Speaker 18: It was called Campoix who It started out in uh
41:18
Speaker 18: Miller School in Charlottesville, Virginia and then eventually moved to
41:21
Speaker 18: vm I. Well every year Coach Aggers was of course
41:25
Speaker 18: the counselor there, and some of the counselors that have
41:30
Speaker 18: been there are guys like Bill Blair that was with
41:33
Speaker 18: the Minnesota Timberwolves, Mike Schuler, who was Coach of the
41:37
Speaker 18: Year at the he was the Kings, and the Portland
41:40
Speaker 18: Trail Blazers all.
41:42
Speaker 3: Uh.
41:44
Speaker 18: I mean, there's so many of those people that were
41:48
Speaker 18: at that that went on to become very successful basketball coaches.
41:53
Speaker 18: And you know, coach Agers stayed in touch with him
41:55
Speaker 18: and stuff, and you know he was beloved by them,
41:59
Speaker 18: and you know, so you know, like Mark said, his
42:04
Speaker 18: outreach was just something he just had. You know, he
42:07
Speaker 18: knew so many people.
42:09
Speaker 4: Mike, you were you played on those teams and certainly
42:13
Speaker 4: the glory days of the running Wildcats in seventy seven
42:17
Speaker 4: and seventy eight when he won two of his four
42:19
Speaker 4: state titles. What was really like, say, from game one
42:24
Speaker 4: when you're getting ready for the season and that final game,
42:27
Speaker 4: that championship game, was there much of a change in
42:30
Speaker 4: the coach?
42:32
Speaker 18: You know what my senior year in seventy eight, Game
42:36
Speaker 18: one we were we played we used to always open
42:40
Speaker 18: up at Mullins, you know, his former team, and we
42:45
Speaker 18: were absolutely in a dog fight there the first game
42:47
Speaker 18: of the year. And you know, as the season progressed,
42:55
Speaker 18: you know, I think we I think we ended up
42:57
Speaker 18: being twenty six and one for the for the year.
42:59
Speaker 18: No way would I I thought, we don't lost one
43:01
Speaker 18: game that year. But one thing I always remember and
43:08
Speaker 18: there's there was an article in a newspaper about this
43:10
Speaker 18: my junior year when we won the state championship. Before
43:13
Speaker 18: the game, we're in the locker room at the Civic Center,
43:16
Speaker 18: and I mean, nobody said a word. Everybody had her
43:19
Speaker 18: head down, her thoughts were And he came in and
43:22
Speaker 18: he got worried. He thought, man, I think they're scared
43:25
Speaker 18: or something. So he started telling stories about when he
43:28
Speaker 18: was in college tried to loosen us up and uh
43:32
Speaker 18: and and things that had happened and stuff. And I
43:35
Speaker 18: remember him saying, boy, I didn't know if they were
43:37
Speaker 18: going to be prepared or not. And then we went
43:40
Speaker 18: out and scored one hundred and eleven points. And it
43:42
Speaker 18: still stands today.
43:43
Speaker 3: And and here's the thing about it, guys, and you
43:46
Speaker 3: guys are are are still in Logan doing great things.
43:50
Speaker 3: But you know, Willie went on to become a county commissioner.
43:54
Speaker 3: Uh and uh. And here is where I'm gonna lose it.
43:57
Speaker 3: I'm just gonna tell you I I did not have
44:00
Speaker 3: a bigger fan in the world, the bigger other than
44:04
Speaker 3: my family, my wife, other than and she's iffy sometimes,
44:07
Speaker 3: I mean, but other than coach akers. I mean, you know,
44:12
Speaker 3: when if I would go to Logan, I go down, Mike,
44:15
Speaker 3: I'll see you. Guy wants to both of you guys
44:16
Speaker 3: next month for the Logan I Hall of Fame. I
44:18
Speaker 3: have MC that every year. Coach was always there and
44:20
Speaker 3: he would bring up something I said on the air
44:22
Speaker 3: the week before because he listened online and he was
44:26
Speaker 3: He was a mentor to me. And I never played.
44:29
Speaker 3: I never played basketball in my life, you know. But
44:31
Speaker 3: he was a mentor for me. I mean he really
44:34
Speaker 3: he was, and he was. He was my biggest cheerleader.
44:36
Speaker 3: And I will say this, I would not be the
44:41
Speaker 3: I don't know how much of a broadcaster I am now,
44:43
Speaker 3: but I would not be the broadcaster or the man
44:45
Speaker 3: I am now if it weren't for Coach Akers. And
44:46
Speaker 3: I never played. I never played. I never played basketball,
44:49
Speaker 3: you know.
44:50
Speaker 4: I went to Logan h during the time he was
44:52
Speaker 4: a commissioner, and I was happy to walk. I walked
44:55
Speaker 4: from my car and I was going to see Speedy
44:57
Speaker 4: Bevans and the crew at WDOW. Willie was on the
45:01
Speaker 4: street and he yelled at me and he said, Hey,
45:05
Speaker 4: I got to show you my new office. Let's go.
45:07
Speaker 4: We went upstairs and he gave me the tour. But
45:10
Speaker 4: as great a coach as he was, and he was
45:12
Speaker 4: indeed a great great man, he was a heck of
45:16
Speaker 4: a basketball player. Where as Mike. He went to Mullens
45:18
Speaker 4: High School. Nineteen fifty five, they won a state championship.
45:22
Speaker 4: They beat a team that was led by Leo Bird,
45:26
Speaker 4: the Huntington High Pony Express Leo Bird in that tournament.
45:30
Speaker 4: They played three games in that tournament and Leo Bird
45:34
Speaker 4: scored one hundred and eighteen points by himself in those
45:37
Speaker 4: three games. But Huntington got beat by Mullins seventy six
45:44
Speaker 4: to sixty four I think was a final score. And
45:47
Speaker 4: the games that they played the Logan Wildcats during that
45:50
Speaker 4: run in nineteen fifty four or the Mullins Rebels rother
45:53
Speaker 4: during that run. They won those playoff games from sectionals
45:57
Speaker 4: to regionals to the state championship, each game by an
46:00
Speaker 4: average of twenty two points a game. So Mullins led
46:04
Speaker 4: by uh, who is the other guy's name? I wrote
46:08
Speaker 4: it down because I knew who, well, no head coach was.
46:14
Speaker 4: The head coach was Lilis D'Antoni. Of course that takes
46:17
Speaker 4: us back away, but yeah, it was Don Tabscott. Don
46:22
Speaker 4: Tabscott was the guy that was his running mate on
46:24
Speaker 4: that Mullin's Rebel team. But you talk about tremendous player,
46:29
Speaker 4: tremendous coach, but an even better man. Yeah, and our
46:34
Speaker 4: was Coachhakers.
46:35
Speaker 3: Our thoughts and prayers to Linda and Chad and great
46:38

Speaker 3: what you don't know. Ken Heurscher, I appreciate Logan High, Coach,
49:37
Speaker 3: Mark Hatcher and Logan High legend Mike Stone, and of
49:40
Speaker 3: course the legendary is always Fred Pursinger for joining me
49:43
Speaker 3: on the show today. And again it was difficult. I
49:45
Speaker 3: posted a little, a very tearful message on social media
49:49
Speaker 3: about coach akers last night. Let me tell you, I mean,
49:52
Speaker 3: they got no better than Willie Acres, and I don't
49:54
Speaker 3: And I told somebody this morning. If Willie Acres never
49:56
Speaker 3: coached a game of basketball, if you he were working
50:00
Speaker 3: fast food or changing the oil in your car, he
50:03
Speaker 3: had been the same person, because that's just the kind
50:05
Speaker 3: of guy that Willy Acres was. And of course he's
50:08
Speaker 3: known for his legendary basketball coaching career, but he's just
50:12
Speaker 3: a hell of a man. I mean, regardless if he
50:15
Speaker 3: never coached basketball. I mean, he really really was. He
50:17
Speaker 3: was a fantastic human being. And as I said, a
50:20
Speaker 3: mentored me, somebody who never played basketball at all, but
50:25
Speaker 3: kind of took me under his wing, just as a
50:28
Speaker 3: young broadcaster in Logan when I moved back there in
50:31
Speaker 3: nineteen ninety three, and I didn't know. I went to
50:35
Speaker 3: school with one of Willy's sons, but I didn't know
50:37
Speaker 3: Willy as a person. I mean, everybody knew coach acres.
50:42
Speaker 3: But I didn't really know him as you know that well,
50:45
Speaker 3: other than just somebody you'd see from Afar until I
50:48
Speaker 3: went back to Logan, and for some reason he took
50:51
Speaker 3: a liking to me, and he and London took me
50:54
Speaker 3: under his wing. He was a great guy. And I'll
50:55
Speaker 3: say that a couple of things. One thing I didn't
50:57
Speaker 3: get to bring up with Hatcher and Stone and with
50:59
Speaker 3: Fred Persinger was in the heyday of the Running Wildcats
51:04
Speaker 3: when I was a kid of a boy in the
51:05
Speaker 3: nineteen seventies and when I was a student at Logan
51:08
Speaker 3: High in the eighties, if you weren't on Middleburg Island
51:10
Speaker 3: by five o'clock for a seven thirty tip, you didn't
51:13
Speaker 3: get a seat. If you wanted to go to a
51:15
Speaker 3: Logan High game in nineteen seventy eight, you got on
51:18
Speaker 3: the island by five o'clock for a seven thirty tip,
51:20
Speaker 3: or there were no seats available. So he will certainly
51:23
Speaker 3: be missed. So Dave Allen showing five eighty liive is

51:38
Speaker 7: How are you?
51:39
Speaker 3: What's up with you? On talk line today?
51:41
Speaker 21: So we're going to continue to remember the life and
51:43
Speaker 21: legacy of Willie Acres. Markatscher will join us on the
51:45
Speaker 21: show coming up as well. Sound from Jim Justice made
