In this episode, Lucas and Luna dig into the bloody Safavid campaign to retake Baghdad from the Ottomans in 1623. Shah Abbas I, having reformed his army with the help of the English adventurer Robert Sherley and his gholam commander Allahverdi Khan, saw an opportunity when the Ottoman sultan was distracted by internal revolts. The siege lasted nine months, featured the use of European-style cannons and sappers, and ended with a dramatic assault that brought the city back under Persian control for the first time since Chaldiran.
