- 0:00Particularly when we are predominantly seated in our
- 0:03mental consciousness, we tend to believe that knowing something
- 0:07with our minds represents knowing it in its reality.
- 0:12We gain what may be called the arrogance of the mental
- 0:15consciousness. We soon learn, however, that
- 0:18mental knowledge is not equivalent to actual practical
- 0:22experience. Reading a book on swimming does
- 0:25not help much if one is flailing and drowning in the lake or
- 0:28ocean without actual experience in both understanding the
- 0:33principle of swimming and having experience with its practical
- 0:37application through the training of our body to respond and
- 0:41thereby succeed in the practice. Similarly, yogic seekers
- 0:47frequently believe that knowing and accepting a particular
- 0:50knowledge or teaching in our minds, with the ability to
- 0:53recite it back and explain it, means that they actually have
- 0:58mastered it. There's an apocryphal story
- 1:01which has been passed down, but which we have not been able to
- 1:04locate in the source material as of yet, which describes an event
- 1:09from the time of the Mahabharata.
- 1:12The preceptor of the royal Princess was tasked with
- 1:15educating the 100 sons of Drutherashtra known as the
- 1:19Korovas, along with the five sons of Pandu known as the
- 1:23Pandavas. One day he indicated that the
- 1:27lesson was not to become angry. Mastery of anger was essential
- 1:32for the role that these Princess would play in their later lives.
- 1:36So it was an important lesson. After teaching the lesson, he
- 1:40asked each Prince individually whether he had learned the
- 1:43lesson and was told by each one, Yes, the lesson is not to become
- 1:49angry until he came to the eldest, the future king of the
- 1:54clan, Yudhishtira, who responded No, I have not learned it.
- 2:01The lesson was repeated the next day and then the following day
- 2:04with the same result. As Yudhishtira demurred from
- 2:08having learned the lesson, Drona in a fit of anger struck
- 2:13Yudhishtira across the cheek. Striking a Prince of the royal
- 2:18blood was a capital offence, and Drona had thereby put his life
- 2:22on the line if Eudistira chose to respond.
- 2:27However, Eudistira then answered, I now understand and
- 2:32have learned the lesson not to become angry.
- 2:35Eudistira understood that a mental knowledge was not actual
- 2:39knowledge or mastery, and it was only after he had an actual
- 2:43circumstance that he was able to judge how deeply the lesson had
- 2:48been impressed upon him. Yiddishtira's lesson is useful
- 2:52for the spiritual seeker who wants to carry out the spiritual
- 2:56surrender to the divine. The first step is generally a
- 3:00central commitment, a will, an aspiration that the mind and
- 3:04psychic being adopt as their understanding.
- 3:08Eventually they find that the reactions of the mind, the vital
- 3:13and the physical body, the responses that are embedded due
- 3:17to instinct or habit, the force of the ego personality, all
- 3:22continue along their pre established grooves and thus the
- 3:27completeness of the process has been derailed, delayed or
- 3:31entirely denied. Srioro Bindu observes quote A
- 3:37complete surrender is not possible in so short a time.
- 3:42For a complete surrender means to cut the knot of the ego in
- 3:45each part of the being and offer it free and whole to the Divine.
- 3:51The mind, the vital, the physical consciousness and even
- 3:56each part of these in all its movements have one after the
- 4:00other to surrender separately, to give up their own way and to
- 4:04accept the way of the Divine. But what 1 can do is to make
- 4:09from the beginning a central resolve and self dedication, and
- 4:13to implement it in whatever way one finds open at each step,
- 4:18taking advantage of every occasion that offers itself to
- 4:22make the self giving complete. The surrender in One Direction
- 4:26makes others easier, more inevitable, but it does not of
- 4:31itself cut or loosen the other knots, and especially those
- 4:35which are very intimately bound up with the present personality
- 4:40and its most cherished formations may often present
- 4:43great difficulties even after the central will has been fixed
- 4:49and the first seals put on its resolve in practice.
