- 1:17Welcome to Hot Takes with the Murph man.
- 1:19I am the Murph man here, my Co host Connor.
- 1:22How you doing, Connor? Doing good today, Murph.
- 1:24Man, how are we doing today? It's been an interesting week.
- 1:28Interesting. Why do you say that?
- 1:30Well, we start school next week at college.
- 1:32Yes, we do. And I had to do a lot of prep
- 1:34work for that. And I'm going to be starting use
- 1:37this new platform called Lumen. I got to learn how to use that
- 1:41like the week before. I decided to just do everything.
- 1:43Yeah, the day before, actually. Yeah, and how?
- 1:46How about you? You ready for school next week?
- 1:49Yeah. Yeah, honestly, I don't have a
- 1:51bad schedule like I did last year.
- 1:53No, you don't. I really don't.
- 1:55The the advantage of your your schedule is it's all during like
- 1:58from 11 to 3 like. Lunch to end of school, Yeah.
- 2:02So you could literally miss the traffic coming home, right?
- 2:05Because yeah. When middle school gets out
- 2:08because. But I'm the major traffic.
- 2:10Oh yeah, people getting off work and everything.
- 2:12And then you can actually stay there later if you want to go to
- 2:15the library and study and do everything right.
- 2:19So yeah, yeah, I think I think you have a pretty good schedule.
- 2:21Let's see how that goes today, right.
- 2:24I got to tell you what, Speaking of college, one thing that I was
- 2:26doing this past week was looking for a loan.
- 2:32Connor HUD gets financial aid to get school.
- 2:34He gets scholarships and all that.
- 2:35But I wanted a little extra money for him to pay me rent.
- 2:41Yeah. To pay for the gas for the.
- 2:42Because we got we got him his car up and running.
- 2:45We got it fixed. So he's going to be able to
- 2:47drive his car to school. He's been driving my car, but
- 2:50now he has his own car, which is pretty cool, right?
- 2:52Yeah. Yeah, it's a stick.
- 2:54So I got to learn how to drive stick, but oh, interesting.
- 2:58I, I think it'll do fine, you know, 'cause when you first
- 3:01started trying to learn it, you had trouble because of the, the,
- 3:06what's it called? Learning how to drive on top of
- 3:10learning how to drive stick, you know, So, but now that you know
- 3:13how to drive, we're gonna teach how to drive stick and you're
- 3:16gonna have a little sports car. So that's pretty cool.
- 3:18It's an old sports car. How old is it?
- 3:20Connor in 24 in January. It could be considered a.
- 3:26Classic car. So I was telling my brother
- 3:31about it and he thought it was funny as hell.
- 3:32Like it's a classic. I'm like, yeah, it's a classic.
- 3:34You can get an antique plate on it.
- 3:36That's funny. You know how they tell you you
- 3:39don't buy your kid a brand new car, You get him?
- 3:42A + 20 + 20 yeah. So, like, if you Rex, it's like,
- 3:46OK, oh, I lost $3, you know? Yeah.
- 3:50Although we put it in a hell of a lot of money to fix that car.
- 3:52It sucks, but it's a really good car.
- 3:54It runs great and you're going to love it.
- 3:56Trust me on that one. But anyway, so we were looking
- 3:59at getting a school loan for his living expenses to pay for the
- 4:02gas and maintenance of the car and you know, a few, a few other
- 4:05expenses like a meal plan at school, books, you know, all the
- 4:09things that may not be covered. Like what else was there?
- 4:11The rent in groceries and utilities at the house,
- 4:13basically. So you.
- 4:14Don't have to get a job and I applied for the loan and I I I
- 4:21applied for the amount with tuition included.
- 4:24We don't need that. I'll just return that money.
- 4:26But I wanted to know what it would cost because I was
- 4:29curious. This is my first time applying
- 4:31for a college loan. I had the the VA right.
- 4:36Yeah. So I had the GI Bill, I didn't
- 4:39have to pay for it. I had tuition assistance with
- 4:40the military, right? I got a master's degree debt
- 4:42free, so I never had to take a college loan out.
- 4:45And I said, let me, I'm curious. Everyone always says college
- 4:50loans are so expensive, right? I'm paying on college loans
- 4:54forever and hasn't nothing's gone down.
- 4:57Well for the $13,000 loan I was looking at, our payments would
- 5:04have been at a 17% interest. OK.
- 5:10After you graduate from college, it's deferred for six months,
- 5:13but in the whole time, 3 or 4 years from now, it is accruing
- 5:17interest and our payments would be $500 a month for 15 years to
- 5:26pay back a total of 53,000. All right, $53,000 for a $13,000
- 5:35loan interest is crazy right now.
- 5:42You can pay along the way, you can make payments every month
- 5:45and it lowers your rate. So once it kicks in, that's what
- 5:47you actually charged interest on because you've been paying the
- 5:49interest all along and you know there's ways around it, but.
- 5:53But damn. Yeah, to pay the interest on the
- 5:56loan, we have to pay 200 a month.
- 5:58So that's why when you have a house and you have a loan on it,
- 6:01you don't want to refinance it for between 7 to 10 years
- 6:03because you haven't paid any of the debt down.
- 6:06It's all interested upfront. So like if I have $1000 payment,
- 6:09900 goes to interest and 100 goes to the house, maybe even
- 6:12only 40 goes to the house. Is that ridiculous or what?
- 6:16Right. Yeah.
- 6:17Same thing with cars. People are buying cars that are
- 6:19more expensive than or not more expensive, but you know, almost
- 6:24a house payment, right? The car I want to buy and you
- 6:27know, this is my my not my dream car, but I wanted a Toyota
- 6:31Camry, right. The hybrid and I've changed a
- 6:34little bit. I researched a little bit.
- 6:36A new battery for a Toyota hybrid is about $10,000 in about
- 6:4010 years. So I look at the Lexus ES hybrid
- 6:45and that battery is only four to 5000 now is making this more
- 6:50expensive and everything. Yeah.
- 6:51But actually it turns out that the Lexus might actually last
- 6:56longer than Toyota Camry. So I, I'm looking at that right
- 6:58now, you know, and then I'll give you my car now you know,
- 7:03and then we can say what you want to do with this up.
- 7:05Yeah. Right.
- 7:07But yeah, so I'll be. Like my project car, if
- 7:10anything, yeah. Like you and your friend, you
- 7:11get together and you fix his car, He can come and fix yours.
- 7:14Yeah. You know, although everything's
- 7:17been fixed on, it's mostly cosmetic.
- 7:19Yeah, it's just like the maybe a new radio.
- 7:23The radio's good. You need speakers.
- 7:25Oh yeah, I need the speakers. Sorry, I forgot I need speakers.
- 7:30You don't hear this like as we're talking, you don't hear
- 7:32all this. No, my headphones are down so I
- 7:35tried turning it up. Oh.
- 7:37Your OK? Well, your headphones are down.
- 7:39Well, leave it. Just leave it No.
- 7:40Your headphones are up there. We turned down then.
- 7:42OK. Yeah, sorry.
- 7:43OK, Yeah. I need a new I don't even know
- 7:48what it's called on top of the radio where the time would be.
- 7:52Or it's the display the. Display not.
- 7:54Not the whole dash display, but just a certain display on this
- 7:59vehicle. Yeah, it's just small stuff like
- 8:01the, but I just want to get it fixed also.
- 8:05That's it, yeah. It's mostly cosmetic stuff.
- 8:07So, yeah, you know, it's, it's funny because as we're getting
- 8:13to do this, going through life, learning about the parent side
- 8:17of it, college side of it, you know, student side of it,
- 8:19there's so many different things going on that I think it's
- 8:22pretty interesting to, to talk about it cuz people don't talk
- 8:26about this. You know, they say get a school
- 8:28loan and that's why you got to pay, you know, you know, what
- 8:32happens if that you don't pay your loan, they garnish your
- 8:37wages. So they actually contact your
- 8:40employer and say he owes us this money.
- 8:42We'll take your money away from you.
- 8:44Now, the other thing that would be cool is you get a job with
- 8:49the government and they forgive your student loans.
- 8:51Sometimes when you do like healthcare and certain stuff
- 8:55that helps people, like social work, sometimes they will
- 8:58forgive your student. The government will pay them for
- 9:00you. OK, You're doing computer
- 9:04science. I don't know that that's even a
- 9:05possibility, right? But I think we can't count on
- 9:10that. But you got to.
- 9:10I just wanted to see what what the whole deal was with school
- 9:13loans because I've never done it.
- 9:15And I looked at them like, damn, that's crazy, that's crazy.
- 9:20So imagine, imagine four years of college at that.
- 9:23You're looking at a $2000 payment when you get out of
- 9:27college, if that's how it works, because maybe they'll lower your
- 9:32interest rate from higher amounts.
- 9:34I don't know. It's crazy.
- 9:37It just, yeah, it just ridiculous.
- 9:39Anyway, welcome to hot Takes with the Murph.
- 9:43And that is my hot take for today.
- 9:46Yes, students, student loans or BS, Yeah.
- 9:50They get to go to college. Yeah, but God, dude, I got to
- 9:55that's. See, luckily your tuition's
- 9:58paid, you know, like you have the Hazelwood Atkins, you know,
- 10:00any financial aid scholarship, you know, that stuff is taken
- 10:02care of and the scholarships are not that much.
- 10:04But I just wanted, I was curious, let me just see what he
- 10:08can get, you know, 'cause like, if you wanted to live on your
- 10:10own, I wanted, I was curious, like, how much would it cost?
- 10:14And that was only with a $400.00 payment.
- 10:19Imagine if we went for the full $700.00 rent and then your own
- 10:22groceries, your own utilities, your own everything.
- 10:25Damn. Oh, insurance for the car.
- 10:28Yeah, yeah, it's God damn. The school loans are such ABS
- 10:35thing. That's a scam.
- 10:36I've always heard of that being a scam.
- 10:37And it's like crazy. Anyway, welcome to the show.
- 10:40Today we're going to be talking about corporate culture, reading
- 10:43the room, understanding the situation that we're in when we
- 10:47join a go to work or something. But I do want to let you guys
- 10:50know that we're going to go ahead and ignite today's fuse on
- 10:55the show. Welcome to Hot Takes with the
- 11:06Murph Man. Today we are talking about
- 11:09reading the Room, A beginner's guide to Corporate culture.
- 11:12This episode helps you decode company culture so you can
- 11:16adapt, contribute, and thrive without losing your All right,
- 11:27So all right, A beginner's Guide to Corporate culture.
- 11:33The episode helps you decide, decode, sorry, decode company
- 11:37culture, and thrive without losing your authenticity.
- 11:40Connor, you asked me about that. What does authenticity mean when
- 11:43you're talking about this? What do you think it means?
- 11:45I'm just curious. Authenticity being real.
- 11:50Being real, yeah, yeah, OK. When you go into a place of
- 11:54work, and I've talked about this the last couple of months,
- 11:56business edit, kids, stuff like that, right?
- 11:58Yeah. But when you go into a new place
- 12:00of work, you're not really aware of what the culture at the work
- 12:06is, right? So you go in there a little
- 12:10cautious and you're not yourself.
- 12:13When you start a new job, you're not.
- 12:15And sometimes the side of you that is real doesn't ever come
- 12:18out. You know, with me, I, I don't
- 12:25try to put up a fake front. I'm, I'm very confident in who I
- 12:29am. And when a new employee comes
- 12:34in, I don't say, OK, this is how it's supposed to be done, but
- 12:36this is how we're going to do. No, no, no.
- 12:38It's like, this is how it's done, period.
- 12:40You know, if they find a shortcut their own way, that
- 12:43they find their shortcut their own way.
- 12:45But I'm talking about like when I started a new job, I'm funny.
- 12:49I like to make jokes and being a counselor, people don't take me
- 12:53seriously. They're like, how can this guy
- 12:55be a counselor? Like he's counseling kids,
- 12:58families, adults. How right.
- 13:02Yeah. And I, I didn't, I didn't care.
- 13:06I knew I was a good counselor. I am a good counselor and I know
- 13:09I've helped people. And I remember one day I had to
- 13:15do something and I had to take over situation.
- 13:18And my Co worker was with me, was just sitting back.
- 13:21And she says I'm I'm so impressed with how you, you do
- 13:23everything, you know. And I said being funny and
- 13:27joking and inappropriate maybe has no bearing on who I am as an
- 13:32employee. OK, but it does affect us
- 13:40because it's your perception. If you have a boss who perceives
- 13:43you as unprofessional and their counseling is you need to be
- 13:46more professional. You got to really think about
- 13:50that. Now, I will tell you the moment
- 13:51that it became very clear to me that I should dress a little
- 13:53better at work because I was dressed in jeans and polo
- 13:56shirts. I went to a district event and
- 14:04they had the kids from the alternative school come up on
- 14:06stage and I was working with them.
- 14:08So they introduced me right at this event and their outfit,
- 14:14their school uniform was black pants and a white polo shirt.
- 14:17Guess what? I was wearing black pants in the
- 14:19white polo shirt. Just coincidental so that my
- 14:23picture came out in the newsletter, the newspaper, I
- 14:27don't know which. And my friends, like, dude, you
- 14:32look like one of the students. And I was like, yeah, maybe I
- 14:36need to dress a little better. What do you think?
- 14:38And he's like, yeah, I think you do, too.
- 14:40So I started changing the way I dressed a little bit, not too
- 14:43much, but I bought button up shirts about, you know, better
- 14:48stuff than just polo shirts. I, I wear polo shirts because
- 14:51it's just easy. It's just easy.
- 14:53I just wash them, throw in the dryer.
- 14:54I'm done, you know. Well, it's not what you do with
- 14:56every laundry. You have to iron polo shirts are
- 15:02like wrinkle free so you just hang them up.
- 15:04It's. Wrinkle free, but yeah, well.
- 15:06Well, they're not. Nothing's 100% wrinkle free, but
- 15:09you know you can hang it up and it stays good.
- 15:12True, true, you know, but so when you're being authentic,
- 15:16that is basically what I want to teach you guys about today, how
- 15:18to be authentic. But you have to read the room.
- 15:21So let's talk about that and let's get to today's burning
- 15:23question. Today's burning question is what
- 15:35is the difference between cultural fit and a cultural
- 15:38multiplier? A They are the same thing.
- 15:42B Cultural fit means you align with the culture.
- 15:46Cultural multiplier means you enhance it.
- 15:49C Cultural fit is a good thing. Cultural ad is a bad thing.
- 15:54D Cultural fit is about your personality.
- 15:57Cultural ad is about your skills.
- 16:00The. Heat is rising, Connor Fan those
- 16:03flames. All right.
- 16:06So cultural fit, all right. Do you think it is they're the
- 16:11same thing as multiplier means you align with the culture and
- 16:18the culture multiplier means you enhance it.
- 16:20Do you think cultural fits a good thing and cultural Well,
- 16:23it's supposed to be cultural multiplier is a bad thing or is
- 16:26cultural fit about your personality and cultural
- 16:30multiplier is about your skills. I.
- 16:32Think it's going to be B where it says cultural fit means
- 16:35you're aligned with the culture and then culture multiplier is
- 16:40you enhance it but a culture. Multiplier is someone who
- 16:42enhances the team's culture by bringing in fresh perspectives,
- 16:46unique value to the team, and previously missing rather than
- 16:49just fitting in, mirroring the existing views.
- 16:53All right, while companies look for a cultural fit, the modern
- 16:57approach to look for is cultural multiplier.
- 17:00Now let's talk about that. I know you guys don't believe
- 17:03me. You look at me, I'm Mexican
- 17:06American, OK, or American Mexican, I guess.
- 17:11But you don't you don't see that in me, right?
- 17:17And when I went for my job interview, like my boss, she
- 17:20hired me. She and I spoke Spanish because
- 17:22I didn't interview another part of the company.
- 17:24So she never even tested my Spanish.
- 17:25And she threw me into the Cigundo barrio here in El Paso,
- 17:27which is like the the Latino part of town.
- 17:32And she basically thought because the way I, I, I joked
- 17:39about I don't want to work with kids, right?
- 17:41That within two or three months I'd quit.
- 17:44And she's like, you know, so I just put you in the place where
- 17:47I said, oh, he can sink or swim. I didn't really, he didn't, she
- 17:49didn't really care at the beginning.
- 17:51And what was funny was as she saw me working with kids, my we
- 17:56would be in the conference room and kids would walk out past her
- 17:58office to the lobby and she see kids sitting in the lobby with
- 18:02attitudes and anger and whatever, right?
- 18:05Whatever perceptions and stereotypes you could think of
- 18:07as you see these kids, they go see me.
- 18:11They came out laughing, joking, and I was still being a jerk
- 18:15with them. Like, dude, you know, like
- 18:18better straighten out or I'm going to come in, you know,
- 18:20whatever. And she's like, I don't
- 18:23understand why the kids like you.
- 18:24She says you're mean to them, you're rude to them.
- 18:32And I said, well, that's just me joking with them on the way out.
- 18:36But but you meet somebody and you're joking with him like that
- 18:39in session sometimes, you know, and like I, I had a kid who stay
- 18:46at the runaway shelter one day. And when she went home, she told
- 18:53me, hey, they stole my pair of pants.
- 18:54So one of the caseworkers and I got together and we got all the
- 18:57kids, set them down. And I took the lead on it,
- 19:00right? And I said, all right, we know
- 19:04something has been stolen. Now notice I said something has
- 19:08been stolen. I didn't say who it belonged to.
- 19:09I didn't say what it was. I said, I know something has
- 19:13been stolen. I'm going to give you guys one
- 19:14chance to get what you stole and bring it back here.
- 19:19And, you know, all six or seven kids leave and they all come
- 19:22back with a bunch of stuff, right?
- 19:26And the caseworker who runs a the shelter sitting there
- 19:30looking at this and I looked for the pair of pants and you know,
- 19:33pair of pants weren't there obviously, right?
- 19:35They all had little stuff. And I said all right, I said
- 19:41none of this is what I'm looking for.
- 19:44I said try again. And they got up and my Co
- 19:48worker's like damn, like where do they keep doing all this
- 19:51stuff? I said obviously you need to do
- 19:52a better job taking care of the shelter.
- 19:55Kids come back with a bunch of stuff and the pants.
- 20:01And I told Anthony, call the police, dude, call the police.
- 20:04They're they're not turning it in.
- 20:06I had a feeling because of who I am, kids hide stuff.
- 20:10I could sense it, right? And one kid says, hold on, comes
- 20:13back with a phone and a ring. They stole my boss's ring.
- 20:18They broke into her office and stole her ring.
- 20:20We didn't even know that they had a, a phone, a landline that
- 20:25they would plug into the room and they would call people.
- 20:27One girl was calling her boyfriend in Japan.
- 20:29The bill hadn't arrived yet. So I I told him I said, all
- 20:38right, get out, you know, like, rude, like, get out.
- 20:43And Anthony was just like, God damn her ring.
- 20:48Like, we were just like, it exposed so much poor
- 20:51supervision. People lost their jobs.
- 20:53OK, but when I told my boss about she goes, how did you do
- 21:00this? And I said the tough guy came in
- 21:03and said give me one chance. And then I just because of who I
- 21:09am, I'm like, this is not everything.
- 21:10And I saw their reaction and I'm like, go get it, come back.
- 21:13I saw one kid and I'm like, OK, something is missing.
- 21:16You know, when we found everything, my boss was like,
- 21:20how do I, how do I address this? I said address the staff because
- 21:23the staff wasn't supervising them and we need to like not
- 21:28leave stuff laying out, whatever, whatever, right?
- 21:30Change our whole habit. But she was just like, how did
- 21:35you get these kids to admit all this, 'cause I was tough with
- 21:39them. The next day the kids were like,
- 21:42hey, Mr. thanks for not calling the the police or thank you for
- 21:45not arresting us or whatever. I said I'm that's still in the
- 21:48works. It's not 100%, but it's not my
- 21:53decision to make. And she's like, these kids are
- 21:56coming to you saying thank you and you're like, it's the same,
- 21:58you're welcome. You say no, you're still in
- 22:00trouble. She says why, Why?
- 22:04She didn't understand. And I said because the kids know
- 22:07I'm being real with them. True, yeah.
- 22:11And kids know when you're trying to fake that you care.
- 22:14Kids know when you fake that you're trying to do certain
- 22:17things right. And it, it's, it's, it's funny
- 22:24because being authentic got me to do so many different things,
- 22:28which is really awesome, right? I'd like that.
- 22:34I'd like the fact that people realize, OK, even though I'm
- 22:38tough and I'm mean and I'm this crazy joker kind of person, I'm,
- 22:43you know, I'm not bipolar. This is all a part of me.
- 22:48I'm a great counselor. I joke around.
- 22:50I'm serious. I, I did whatever the situation
- 22:53applied that matters. Now when we had like real
- 22:57serious situations, I took care of them.
- 23:01You know, it wasn't a big deal because I was able to be
- 23:07professional and do the job that was required of me.
- 23:10So as we're doing all this, when you think about being authentic,
- 23:14realize being authentic is being real to yourself within the
- 23:19culture of the business. And that's what we're going to
- 23:21talk about today. So let's go ahead and get to my
- 23:24second hot take of the day. In today's hot take.
- 23:36Today's hot take is this. The only way to truly thrive is
- 23:41to be a cultural ad, not a cultural fit.
- 23:44Trying to blindly fit in by suppressing your authentic self
- 23:48leads to burnout and obscurity. The best employees bring a
- 23:52perspective the team is missing, not just a mirror of the
- 23:56existing perspective. That's the core.
- 23:59Now let's stack the fuel. Let's talk about that.
- 24:03Let's thank you. OK, a cultural ad, Are you
- 24:16adding to what they have or are you fitting in and conforming?
- 24:23Am I saying go in and bulk it and buck the norm?
- 24:27Bucking is pushing out of the way and that's I'm not using the
- 24:29B word instead of something else.
- 24:31OK, OK, buck it. Like Kick It Out of the way and
- 24:34do it your own way. No, I'm saying go in there and
- 24:38fit in and find your spot and enhance it and do better.
- 24:42OK. When when you do all that you
- 24:45have better rapport with your Co workers.
- 24:48OK, You're not trying to just be funny, you're not trying to be
- 24:53serious, you're not trying to be something you're not, but you
- 24:56have to know how it all starts and you day one, you can go in
- 25:02there to a job interview and be like, yo, what's up?
- 25:05How you doing? You know it doesn't work that
- 25:07way, right when when you go into a job interview being cocky.
- 25:12Sometimes I've, and I've talked about this cock being cocky
- 25:15sometimes can be against you. When you have a boss who's cocky
- 25:20and someone comes in cocky, it's automatic challenge and you got
- 25:24to figure out a way around that. And good, good managers let the
- 25:27cockiness flow. They don't take it as a personal
- 25:30threat. They're like, I hired him
- 25:31because he's a badass. OK, You can't hire a badass and
- 25:37then say whoa, chill out, slow down like that.
- 25:40One girl did the YWCA with me right.
- 25:43Yeah. She hired me 'cause I was a
- 25:48great fit for the job. And then she regretted it
- 25:50because I didn't put up with anything.
- 25:53I mean, I quit within a week and a half.
- 25:54Damn. And I'm not a quitter, man, but
- 25:59I, I, I, I knew. I knew that wasn't the culture I
- 26:02wanted to be in, you know? But yeah, so are you a fit or
- 26:09are you fitting in, I should say, or are you adding to the
- 26:11culture? That's what going to ask
- 26:13yourselves while we go to break, you guys.
- 26:15We'll be right back from break. It's time for a break.

- 30:11Call. 988 and press one. You don't have to be a veteran.
- 30:16It's the veterans hotline, it's the crisis helpline, it's
- 30:18everything hotline. Someone's there 24/7, 365 to
- 30:22call you or talk to you, I should say.
- 30:24So call and get some help, OK. And by the way, that song was
- 30:28Ryan Spencer's Make 22 zero again, if you don't know what
- 30:30that is, it's very interesting song.
- 30:33You should hear it. I right?
- 30:34I like it, yeah. You know, it's one of those
- 30:36songs that when I first started playing, I remember the first
- 30:40time I heard it, I was like, what?
- 30:42You know, there's no song I play at the end of the at the end of
- 30:45the show today called Adios Amigo by Dallas Alexander.
- 30:48That's another one of my friend, the world's longest sniper shot.
- 30:52Adios Amigo. It has a double meaning.
- 30:54Good. So glad I see you.
- 30:57Anyway, it's good to today's definitions that we need to
- 31:02learn the segment called today laying down the coals, the
- 31:14coding corporate norms now value define the ask.
- 31:19Before we dig in, let's clarify some of the key terms we'll be
- 31:23using today while laying down the coals.
- 31:26Corporate culture. The shared values, behaviors,
- 31:29and norms that shape how people work together in an
- 31:32organization. Cultural fit versus cultural
- 31:36add. Fit means you align with the
- 31:38culture. Add means you bring something
- 31:40new that enhances it. Situational awareness.
- 31:44The ability to observe and interpret what's happening
- 31:47around you. Now that the coals are laid, the
- 31:50foundation is solid. Now let's see it in action.
- 31:54So let's talk about corporate culture, Connor, the shared
- 31:57values, behaviors and norms that shape how people work together
- 32:01in an organization. Now, I, I, I've been doing a lot
- 32:05of business stuff lately, right? And one of the things I noticed
- 32:08is there's a guy who gives tips and he says, sorry, I stepped on
- 32:17the dog. No, OK, we don't have a dog.
- 32:24Chick-fil-A has this culture of saying thank you for everything,
- 32:29right? Yeah.
- 32:31And you, when you're training someone, if you're if I'm
- 32:36training you, Connor, and someone asked me a question,
- 32:39like answer them, but I don't say thank you or whatever the
- 32:41reply's supposed to be, right? What are you going to do as an
- 32:44employee? You're going to say, oh, we
- 32:45don't have to say it. You watch this guy over here
- 32:48say, oh, sure enough, anything, whatever is this person respond
- 32:52differently. And you're like, OK, we don't
- 32:53have to say thank you. Has that person bought into the
- 32:55culture of the business? No.
- 32:58Was he taught the culture of the business?
- 33:00No. When you go to places like that
- 33:06and you have a culture of how things are done, like Coyote
- 33:11Ugly, they dance on the the bar. OK, It's a it's a bar.
- 33:16You have to be willing to do that if you're going to work
- 33:19there. OK, If you go to Twin Peaks, you
- 33:25got to dress a certain way. Hooters, you got to dress a
- 33:27certain way, right? But when you go to places like
- 33:35IBM or Raytheon or the government or whatever,
- 33:40different cultures every, everywhere has different
- 33:42cultures. How they would dress, how we
- 33:43talk, how we act. And, you know, it's it's
- 33:50customer service, but it's nice when everyone is on board with
- 33:54it. What ends up happening is
- 33:57everyone does it. So it becomes a norm.
- 34:00And that's the cultural norm. Now there's a movie called
- 34:04Waiting. Do you remember that movie with
- 34:06Ryan Reynolds with the the game? Oh.
- 34:09Yeah, the the game host game. Yeah, the game I was, I was
- 34:12talking about hosting like the waitress.
- 34:18What the? Wait, the waiter one?
- 34:22Yeah, that's what I'm saying. That's what I was going to say.
- 34:25All right. Anyway, in that movie, he's
- 34:28going around teaching a new guy how to talk, I mean, how to do
- 34:31the job. And he gives them all the
- 34:31insurance and outs of everything, right?
- 34:34And he is very inappropriate, let's just put it that way.
- 34:41But there's this waitress, and do me a favor, look her up.
- 34:46This is some actress I want to talk about the waiting actress.
- 34:56What's her name? Is the girl with the dark hair
- 34:58there to the right? What's her name?
- 35:02Alana Obach. Alana Obach.
- 35:06She plays this really rough waitress and she's in the back
- 35:15and she's cursing up a storm and she walks around the corner.
- 35:17You get this really pleasant waitress talking to the
- 35:22customers all nice, and she runs the bag and starts cursing up a
- 35:24storm again. You know, does she fit into the
- 35:28culture? Yeah.
- 35:29You got to be professional at work.
- 35:30But around the Co workers, they're very different, right?
- 35:33Yeah. Now she Alana Obach.
- 35:36He changed it on me. Oh, sorry.
- 35:39Is the mother on Ted? But she is also an accomplished
- 35:45singer, like Coco. Look up Alano sings.
- 35:54Look up her video real quick. I'm just curious so you can see
- 35:57how good she sounds. Anyway, she plays his character
- 36:00and she has this way to switch and she's a great actress.
- 36:03I love her to death. But I just want you to hear it
- 36:07real quick. You can just play it and go to
- 36:08the middle and just hear it. Yeah.
- 36:15Look, that's her. See.
- 36:19That's funny, I didn't know that.
- 36:22Wow. So Alana Ubach is someone have
- 36:24actually started researching because I've, I've seen more
- 36:27videos over say I, you know, TikTok, you see one video, you
- 36:30see more videos and everything, right?
- 36:31Yeah, in waiting. There's a culture at work.
- 36:36They're all professional with the customers, but in behind the
- 36:39scenes, very inappropriate. And I, I love that as an
- 36:42example. And Speaking of TikTok, I got to
- 36:44give a shout out to MBR Talk Roku that we're live on right
- 36:48now. Our buddy out there, H Train is
- 36:52doing the show for us, which we appreciate you sharing it for
- 36:54us. Joel, I got to tell you, I
- 36:56didn't have the screen refresh it when it first started and it
- 36:59didn't show you live. So I was like, oh, I wonder
- 37:02where H is and kind of like just refresh your screen.
- 37:04So I haven't had a chance to tell you thank you and give you
- 37:07a quick shout out. You're listen, if you're
- 37:08watching us on pure hot takes, you can catch us on YouTube,
- 37:11Twitch, I'm sorry, YouTube and TikTok.
- 37:16And you can also find us at MBR Talk, Roku at on TikTok, MBR
- 37:22talk in other places. But you can also go to Roku,
- 37:24look up MBR, find the military broadcasting radio icon black
- 37:28and white and go to and check us out on Saturday.
- 37:30You can catch us there live as well.
- 37:33So, you know, I think those of you who come in and talk to us
- 37:35and shared everything with us, so, you know, give you a quick
- 37:38shout out and give a quick shout out to broadcast Beaker.
- 37:40If you don't know what broadcast beaker is, Adrian has a thing
- 37:46about ducks. He has his character he uses
- 37:49called Beaker and he has ducks, and ducks can weather any storm.
- 37:54They can make it through anything.
- 37:56So they're very resilient, very strong.
- 37:57And that's why he uses the symbol of ducks.
- 37:59And what I think is interesting about that is he has this
- 38:03character. We've done animations and you
- 38:04can catch those animations on on all the military broadcast radio
- 38:07channels and some of them here on your hot takes.
- 38:12And we're working on animations right now.
- 38:14So it's really cool that we're doing there and partnering there
- 38:17with military broadcast radio. So I want to give them a quick
- 38:19shout out is if you look at our bumpers, we have the little shot
- 38:22the MBR situations are going to say.
- 38:31And then Cassie also just joined us.
- 38:34Cassie, thanks for joining us. I appreciate that.
- 38:36So going back to the, I don't know, getting back to the show,
- 38:43we were talking about the different corporate cultures.
- 38:46We also have the term cultural fit versus adding.
- 38:50Do you align with the culture or do you bring something new?
- 38:53OK, that's also very important. And situational awareness,
- 38:57that's probably the most important thing, the ability to
- 39:00observe and interpret what's happening around you, right?
- 39:05Because if you don't know what's happening around you and you're
- 39:06oblivious to it, how are you going to know what's going on at
- 39:09work? You can't.
- 39:12So I'll tell you what let's talk about, give you a quick story
- 39:15because I can tell people, I can share all my stories, but let me
- 39:18give you an example in our statement called Story from the
- 39:20Fire, Tuning in, not blending in.
- 39:31In today's Story from the Fire, Avery joined a startup where
- 39:35everyone wore hoodies and called the CEO by her first name.
- 39:39At first, he held back, but after observing how others
- 39:43communicated and contributed, he found his voice and fit in
- 39:47without losing his edge. He learned that reading the room
- 39:51isn't about blending in, but about tuning in.
- 39:54That was a story from the fire theory turned to reality.
- 39:59Now, here's your map to the gold.
- 40:03All right, so in this startup, everyone wore hoodies and called
- 40:06the CEO by their first name. That takes a little getting used
- 40:10to. Right, I have a thing.
- 40:13Me personally, if someone introduces me to you, whatever
- 40:17name you give me, that's what I'm going to use, you know?
- 40:22And actually an example, when I was doing comedy one night at
- 40:24this bar, this guy comes in and goes, you know, hey, my name is
- 40:28silent and all, right, cool, whatever, right?
- 40:32Silent. Then later on, I was doing
- 40:34business and someone calls me called Thaddeus.
- 40:37I think that was his name. I might be wrong.
- 40:39If I am silent, don't kill me. But I was like, it was something
- 40:45different like that. And I'm like, where is it?
- 40:48You're Hispanic. Where do you get the name?
- 40:50Like, I forgot what it was. It was something, but it sounded
- 40:53like a very white name. You know, when you're doing
- 40:58comedy, you meet all kinds of people and you can say anything
- 41:02like, you went to a comedy show, you liked it, right?
- 41:04How? Did they like it?
- 41:08You know, you see all times all kinds of people there, but when
- 41:13you talk about like people going by their first name or anything,
- 41:15if I introduce me as a certain way, that's what I'm going to
- 41:17call you. So if you introduce me as Sandy,
- 41:19that's what I'm going to call you.
- 41:21If people call you Sandra, I want to keep calling you Sandy.
- 41:25You know someone's name, like Margaret, I call her Maggie.
- 41:33I don't know where that came from.
- 41:34It just happened. There was a girl we used to have
- 41:37in our club. We'd called her Lilo because she
- 41:40looked like Lilo. And she's like, why do you call
- 41:43me Lilo? You're the only one that calls
- 41:44me Lilo. I'm like, what do you mean I'm
- 41:47the only one that calls you Lilo?
- 41:48Like she says, no one else calls me Lilo.
- 41:53No one else calls me Maggie. I'm like, didn't Am I just
- 41:56making up these names? Right.
- 41:58So I I take it real serious when someone introduces themselves at
- 42:01work, I try to remember their name.
- 42:04OK, Now it's funny. Like my boss, Patsy, she
- 42:08introduced herself first as I'm Patricia Rivas, you know, like,
- 42:11oh, OK, now she's Patsy. You know, she never said, OK,
- 42:17you can call me Patsy. It's like I was calling to
- 42:19Patricia, right? Yeah.
- 42:22And everyone else called her Patsy.
- 42:25And so I just said, OK, one day I want to call you Patsy.
- 42:27And I was OK I'm like, OK, you know.
- 42:31But you have to observe how others communicate, how they
- 42:33contribute. And you got to find your voice
- 42:35and fit in without losing your edge.
- 42:38OK? Reading the room is the most
- 42:40important skill anyone can have. And I talked about comedy, you
- 42:44know, like the community we went to go see.
- 42:46He made a comeback after so many years.
- 42:49And a lot of his act was the same from before 'cause it was
- 42:52funny. And, you know, it's been 30
- 42:53years. No one knows it.
- 42:54But for someone who's been there before, OK, whatever.
- 42:58Yeah, it is. It's just interesting because
- 43:06when you meet people like that, right, you're just, he's a great
- 43:10guy. And I call him by his stage
- 43:13name. People call me Murph or Murph,
- 43:15man. No one calls me my first name,
- 43:18right? Yeah.
- 43:19That's yeah, I don't hear Sean or Adrian or anything the.
- 43:22Only one that calls me Sean is you.
- 43:23Yeah. And then the girls that they
- 43:25call me Daddy, but that's a different story all together,
- 43:27right? OK.
- 43:31Yeah, you liked that one, didn't you?
- 43:34Totally, totally. Anyone can be a father, but take
- 43:39someone especially called daddy, that takes on a very different
- 43:43meaning when you're an adult. Yeah, it does.
- 43:46Really. Oh, my God, You know, So yeah,
- 43:49it's one of those things when, when you think about it, right,
- 43:53you've got to read the room. You got to understand what's
- 43:56going on, be situationally aware of everything going on around
- 44:00you because there's things that you do and you don't even
- 44:04realize it. Like parking at the parking lot.
- 44:06Where do the employees park? You know you're supposed to park
- 44:10is far away from possible. Whatever, right?
- 44:15As a teacher at the college, I have parking, but sometimes I'd
- 44:20go into the parking lot and it would be empty.
- 44:22Sometimes I'd go in and it would be full.
- 44:25So I had to plan accordingly for that.
- 44:27We talked about you and your your parking for school.
- 44:30Yeah, right. I said, oh, just park there and
- 44:36ride your scooter in. You know, there's a lot of
- 44:38people on the sidewalk and stuff and they block the road.
- 44:41So go on the other side. I thought about this last night.
- 44:45Go on the other side. Yeah, I don't.
- 44:49Know that would be legal because you're in a scooter, right?
- 44:52Went against traffic, but everyone's going to the college.
- 44:56If you drive on the other side, you're away from everybody.
- 44:58That's the thing I thought of. But if I'm going here, I got to
- 45:01worry about people coming up the hill.
- 45:03But. Yeah, but there's not.
- 45:03The traffic is not bad because most people are going in, not
- 45:07out, so anyway. But yes, read the room,
- 45:11understand the culture is probably the most important
- 45:14thing you can do in any situation.
- 45:17OK, I remember one time in high school, I was at a party and
- 45:21someone said something about Jefferson High School, and I
- 45:25said Jefferson sucks. My friend was going to high
- 45:30school at Jefferson. The entire party was Jefferson.
- 45:35Oops. Right.
- 45:39Oops. Yeah, that was that was a little
- 45:43crazy because I was like, OK, hold on, what's going on here?
- 45:48You know, and I I literally said Jefferson sucks.
- 45:52From that day forward, I've learned don't, don't bat my
- 45:54daughter's schools because you never know who's there right now
- 45:58everyone talks about there's a school here in town.
- 46:01You know, Jeff and Booy are the two rivals.
- 46:03There's a lot of rivals in town, but Jeff and Booy are the owner
- 46:05of the oldest schools and they have this rivalry and
- 46:08everything. But what's funny is there's a
- 46:09joke that I met a girl one time, right?
- 46:12And so I'll let you go out with me and you can figure out what
- 46:15school I go to. And I said, OK, can you give me
- 46:21the 1st letter in your school name?
- 46:23Now let's see what you can, what you come up with for this,
- 46:25right? She says L Loretto.
- 46:29Loretto. No, not Loretto.
- 46:33Laura's in all girls school. If she was a guy, I wouldn't
- 46:35have said Loretto. I said Lydia Patterson
- 46:38Institute. That's another one, right?
- 46:41She's like, no, she says you have one more guest.
- 46:44And I said I I really don't know.
- 46:46She was. See.
- 46:49See, that's a real thing. People call it La Jeff.
- 46:52Is that Bowie? Yeah, I, I was thinking, I'm
- 46:54like, can't you be talking about a lot of Jeff?
- 46:57I'm like, probably I wouldn't be surprised.
- 47:01And yeah, I was. Literally talking about
- 47:03difference in high school, I thought you would catch the clue
- 47:05and and go well, I caught. It at first I was like, what?
- 47:07No, come on, it's got to be something else.
- 47:09Loretto it was just it was funny, you know, I heard that
- 47:12joke and I just think it's still funny to this day.
- 47:15If you know El Paso, you'll let Jeff, you know, just the way
- 47:18people talk about certain things around your your town.
- 47:22One time we were in DC and one thing I like to do is I like to
- 47:25drive and we're just driving like literally like he was.
- 47:31What were you, 13? Let's see, 2019 you would have
- 47:35been. 13. 13 right? Yeah.
- 47:38And I was like, OK, Connor, let's get lost.
- 47:41We were. 12 going to 13. OK, yeah, you, I said let's
- 47:46let's get lost. And you're like, what do you
- 47:47mean? I said, just pick left, right,
- 47:49pick this exit, go here, go there and you get to pick five
- 47:52and five and whatever. And let's see what we get
- 47:55because we always have GPS to get back home.
- 47:57And it wasn't like we were going to get lost.
- 47:58And we ended up in this one part of town and we were looking
- 48:03around and it was all Mexican, all Spanish.
- 48:07And you looked at me and they go, why don't we go back to El
- 48:11Paso? And it was a different community
- 48:15in a different state, different part of the country looked
- 48:18exactly like El Paso, Right. It was crazy.
- 48:22They even had the models for sale, you know?
- 48:25Yeah. It it's like, now, had I been
- 48:29driving through that and I had gone to one of the stores, would
- 48:33I have spoke English or Spanish? Think about that for a second.
- 48:40Why Spanish? Because.
- 48:42That's everything around me was Spanish.
- 48:44Yeah. If I walked in and I saw a
- 48:47blonde haired blue eye girl, how would I speak to her?
- 48:49Hey in Spanish. A blonde hair, blue eyes.
- 48:55Looks does not mean you're not Mexican.
- 49:01Yeah. OK, The point being is, where
- 49:04was I? I was reading the room, which is
- 49:07the community. It's Hispanic community.
- 49:10Obviously she's got to speak Spanish.
- 49:11Unless if she's just like you and just happened to be in
- 49:14there. This is working as if someone's
- 49:18working and I walk in. But when I spoke Spanish to her,
- 49:24she looked at me like, yes, Sir, can I help you?
- 49:26Like I spoke Spanish to you, you know, I don't know, like I have
- 49:33people that'll, that'll talk to me and I hear their accents.
- 49:36And it's, it's I don't want to be insulting and say, can you
- 49:38just speak in, in Spanish like you did to your mom, right?
- 49:44Do you remember this? I told you the story.
- 49:45I know you were too young to remember, but Connor was
- 49:48learning how to spell and he had words like tub, TUB, right?
- 49:54And then you add an E makes the vowel a long sound.
- 49:57It becomes tube, right? Like I, I can't think of other
- 50:02examples, but that's, that's let's just stick with that one.
- 50:05So his mom, whose first language was Spanish, and she, she
- 50:09learned a lot of English on her own.
- 50:10She really did. But she tells him tube, tube,
- 50:18tube, tube. And Connor is like trying to
- 50:27understand. He's like, it's the same word,
- 50:29mom. You're not really changing
- 50:30anything because tub and tube are two different words and
- 50:33she's saying the same thing tube, but tube and tube she's
- 50:36saying longer. Oh sound right, the O sound
- 50:39because there's two OS in the pronunciation of it.
- 50:42Tub, tube. That's how she read it.
- 50:45And Connor's like trying and I'm sitting there and I'm, you know,
- 50:48I'm, I'm laying her to her parenting thing.
- 50:50And Connor just turns to me and he goes, dad, can you help me?
- 50:57And she was like, what's wrong with me?
- 51:00And I and I tried. I'm like tube, tub, tube, tub,
- 51:05not tub, not tube and tube. And she's like, I, I don't
- 51:10understand the difference. And there was other words, and I
- 51:12really can't think of a word like rub and rube, but you know.
- 51:18Bath, Bathe. No.
- 51:19No, no, no, no. You had E at the end.
- 51:21Bathe. Well, I get OK.
- 51:22Yeah. All right.
- 51:23Yeah. Bathe.
- 51:25Bathe. Yeah.
- 51:25Bathe. But you know, the way you looked
- 51:35at me like, Dad, can you help me?
- 51:40I felt bad. And even your mom was like,
- 51:43what? I'm doing it good.
- 51:44I'm like, no, you're not. Hold on you guys.
- 51:47That's funny. I.
- 51:49Say you're you're really not doing anything good.
- 51:51And then one time like she would talk to me and she would say, if
- 51:58you know me, I have a lot of bad stuff happen to me, right?
- 52:00Like literally this morning. Want to tell him?
- 52:05You go ahead, dude. Go ahead.
- 52:06Well. No, I I was like, OK, I put my
- 52:08drink down. I said, OK, I do my sound check,
- 52:10we're good. And as I come back, I knocked
- 52:12this drink all over me, right? And kind of goes, you literally
- 52:16said we're good. And then you put water on
- 52:19yourself. Yeah, all I hear.
- 52:20I think we're good for the show. And then you, I don't know how
- 52:25you spill that. And you're like, oh.
- 52:27I went over and I came back this way.
- 52:29It drenched all over the carpet. We, we, we just even try.
- 52:34We had a full cup of water. We didn't even try to like stop
- 52:38it. We just let it run.
- 52:40Not just that, the show's about to start.
- 52:42Yeah, in like 5 minutes. Yeah, I'm sitting.
- 52:44Here in a puddle of the water, sitting like I'm soaked and I'm
- 52:48like, I don't have time to go change, right?
- 52:49Anyway I. Just looked at it, fall on the
- 52:51ground. I'm like go get the towel.
- 52:53Bad things happen to us or to me.
- 52:56And your mom one time tells me I you got such butt lock.
- 53:04And I was like, what? Butt lock, you know, it's bad
- 53:11luck. Butt luck is Constipation, you
- 53:18know? And yeah, so we do that.
- 53:20And anyway, you got to read the room.
- 53:24But sometimes, like reading the room, you want to give a person
- 53:27a chance. You can see they're struggling.
- 53:30You got to let them find themselves.
- 53:32Does that make sense? You know, language wise, culture
- 53:35wise, Like for example, when the we went to Twin Peaks for the
- 53:47Mexico game when FIFA was playing, right, the culture
- 53:51there was a lot different. Oh, yeah.
- 53:55Than others have taken me, right.
- 53:58And had I gone into that room and said Viva USAI, don't think
- 54:04I would have left her alive, right.
- 54:06Oh. No, it would have been worse if
- 54:08you said like Colombia or something.
- 54:09Well, well. But they weren't playing in the
- 54:11USA. But what I'm getting at is.
- 54:14It was set out the team. Yeah, you know.
- 54:16Other than Mexico? You're gonna read the room.
- 54:19Everybody's wearing green and you show up in red.
- 54:21Yeah. Something like that right
- 54:22between Spain or whatever it was.
- 54:24And yeah, you got to read the room.
- 54:26That's probably the most important skill I can tell you.
- 54:29And that's probably the most interesting thing that we have
- 54:34going on for us is, you know, the culture where we are.
- 54:38So I'll tell you what, let's let's get to those actionable
- 54:42steps you can take to help you do better in your show, in your
- 54:47show, in your work. Here's our segment called Heat
- 54:51Map. Observe, interpret, and thrive.
- 55:03The heat map will show you where to focus your efforts for the
- 55:06most impact. Observe how people communicate.
- 55:09Formal or casual, e-mail or Slack.
- 55:13Pay attention to meeting dynamics.
- 55:15Who speaks, who leads, who listens.
- 55:18Ask a trusted colleague about unspoken norms.
- 55:21This is a great way to get insider knowledge.
- 55:24The map is drawn. You've got the road map now
- 55:28let's avoid the land mines all right so observe how people
- 55:33communicate whether it's formal or casual e-mail or through an
- 55:37app. WhatsApp is everyone's popular
- 55:40thing, right? No.
- 55:44Well, when you for. You for Mexico?
- 55:47Yeah, but mostly it would be Instagram.
- 55:52Instagram for you. Well, I was going to ask you,
- 55:54what do you, what app do you use?
- 55:56But you started talking until then it comes, you get there and
- 55:59you got there. Instagram.
- 56:05I have people that use Messenger, like, yeah, my cell
- 56:07phone. Yeah, text me there.
- 56:09You know all of that, right? Secondly, pay attention to
- 56:18meeting dynamics. Who speaks, who leads and who
- 56:21listens. I was at a meeting on Thursday
- 56:25night and I was very involved in the discussion because this guy
- 56:33was talking to me and we're having a group discussion.
- 56:36And the boss was running the the meeting and I said something and
- 56:40he just goes to someone else across the other side of the
- 56:44room. You had your hand up, and I was
- 56:48like, shut up, right? Were you telling me to shut up?
- 56:52No, but he wanted to acknowledge the person who raised her hand.
- 56:56We were having a real discussion, but then someone
- 57:00raised her hand and he acknowledged her immediately.
- 57:03He didn't wasn't telling me to shut up.
- 57:04He was just saying she raised her hand.
- 57:06She has a question, let her ask it.
- 57:07You know, I didn't. I was like, hey, I'm talking
- 57:10here. Literally.
- 57:11Joseph and I, we looked at each other.
- 57:13We're like, OK, it's not our turn to speak.
- 57:18But when, when you're in a meeting, you got to know who's
- 57:22running the meeting. You got to know what's being
- 57:23said and what your role is in that.
- 57:26And it was funny because one of the things that I have 25 years
- 57:30there, I'm one of the senior teachers, you know, and we have
- 57:34all these new people and they're asking questions and stuff.
- 57:36And I'm like, well, we have this option.
- 57:39This option is something I like this option because this is
- 57:41this. And they tell me, well, you got
- 57:42to use this platform. That's the what I was talking
- 57:44about earlier. That's OK, I will.
- 57:47You know, just because you all convinced me I'm going to use it
- 57:50and I got a free iPad out of it. That's true.
- 57:53Yeah. You know, he just, he comes home
- 57:55after the meeting with just a brand new laptop.
- 57:57I'm like, oh, not a laptop, iPad.
- 57:59I'm like, oh. Yeah, wow, Yeah, I'll learn.
- 58:03This platform did. You win a raffle?
- 58:05No, I just learned a new system. And, and the program that runs
- 58:09the platform was giving us the iPads because they want us to
- 58:13use their platform. So for them, it's an investment
- 58:16in their platform because people buy the platform and for.
- 58:18You you have to switch everything into that program.
- 58:22I just log in online. Mobile you have to learn in like
- 58:25go training oh. Yeah, yeah, there.
- 58:27I have to do a lot of work for my class.
- 58:28Yeah, I'll probably start that in the spring anyway.
- 58:31And the last one is ask the trusted colleague about the
- 58:33unspoken norms. And this is a great way to get
- 58:36insider knowledge. What does that mean?
- 58:40You know, a on Friday mornings, I had my meeting, my first
- 58:44meeting yesterday, right? Where should I sit?
- 58:48Because everyone already has their seats at the table, right?
- 58:52And I I want to, I know you're in college and you have like 300
- 58:54people in your class. It doesn't really work, but when
- 58:57you had those 300 people in your classes, did you have the one
- 58:59seat you sat in almost every time?
- 59:01Yeah, Right. Why didn't you change seats?
- 59:07I would tell my college students.
- 59:09It's like school same same thing like assigned seating or you sit
- 59:14there that's your new seat for the year or the semester or for
- 59:17the. But is that unspoken?
- 59:19That's your seat for the rest of the year.
- 59:20Or can you change seats? You can.
- 59:22Change. But since we've grown into that
- 59:26from like elementary all the way to college, we just stick with
- 59:30whatever. We pick the seat that we want.
- 59:33If you like it, you stay. If not, go find another seat and
- 59:37stay there. One thing I tell my college
- 59:40students, you know, I have between 30 to 40 students per
- 59:42class. I tell them, I'm going to ask
- 59:45you to do something for me. If there's not an assigned
- 59:48seating chart by the teacher, go sit in a different seat in the
- 59:52classroom and just watch the chaos.
- 59:56You start because the person was supposed to sit in your seat
- 59:59either comes up and goes, yo, you're in my seat, or they're
- 1:00:02like, OK, I'll just let me sit over here.
- 1:00:04Now that person comes up and they're like.
- 1:00:06Hey, you're in my seat and before you know it, it creates
- 1:00:09this whole chain reaction where everyone's in a different seat
- 1:00:11and the teacher walks in, looks up and is like, what's going on
- 1:00:17here? That's one of that's one of my
- 1:00:23favorite tricks. Brings the plan teachers.
- 1:00:26I'll tell you, we're at the top of the hour here on MBR talk

- 1:05:33Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:05:35Depends on what it's about. It's about history, No?
- 1:05:40If it's. About candidates, What's it a
- 1:05:42boot? If it's Canadian trivia, it's
- 1:05:46what's it about about? That's how they say it anyway.
- 1:05:50Yeah, of course. The thing is when you have
- 1:05:52general trivia and they just ask you all these questions, it's
- 1:05:54just I can't, you can't have a back to school theme.
- 1:05:56But it has a lot of stuff about schools.
- 1:05:58Just it could be a sports question about a school.
- 1:06:01So it's really hard to say category, you know, if I say
- 1:06:04it's a Star Wars trivia. Oh, then Star Wars.
- 1:06:07But. I could talk about the director,
- 1:06:08I could talk about the production company.
- 1:06:09I could talk about a vehicle. I could talk about a character.
- 1:06:11I could talk about a specific movie.
- 1:06:14You know, there's a lot of different things there.
- 1:06:17But yeah. So join us every Wednesday at
- 1:06:199:00 PM. Eastern for trivia with Badlands
- 1:06:22Trivia and Blazing Bingo partnered with military
- 1:06:24broadcast radio. All right, let's keep this show
- 1:06:27going here. Let's talk about those pitfalls
- 1:06:29you're going to get, you're going to fall into.
- 1:06:31So let's help you prevent getting burned.
- 1:06:33I'm sorry there's Identify the pitfalls you're going to fall
- 1:06:36into when you're having trouble with this.
- 1:06:47Authenticity is not a pitfall. Facts.
- 1:06:50Let's talk about where you'll get burned.
- 1:06:53These are some common pitfalls, assuming all workplaces are the
- 1:06:57same. Every culture is unique.
- 1:07:00You must adapt to your specific environment.
- 1:07:03Overcorrecting and losing authenticity.
- 1:07:06Adapt, don't erase. You can fit in without losing
- 1:07:10yourself. Ignoring red flags.
- 1:07:13Culture fit matters. Trust your gut.
- 1:07:16If something feels off, it probably is.
- 1:07:20Danger zone identified. You know the pitfalls, now let's
- 1:07:24gear up to stay safe. So authenticity is not a pitfall
- 1:07:31being real. Excuse me?
- 1:07:35Authenticity is not a pitfall. Being real is being yourself,
- 1:07:39being genuine. That's very important to you
- 1:07:41guys, being authentic. Assess our workplace because
- 1:07:45they are not the same. Every culture is unique and you
- 1:07:47must adapt to your specific environment.
- 1:07:50Now, if you work with a certain culture, one of the biggest
- 1:07:57issues that people have is the break room and food that's
- 1:08:02cooking, right? Yeah.
- 1:08:06If I like to eat fish and I go cook fish in the microwave, that
- 1:08:09smells, that stinks, right? But if that's my culture to eat,
- 1:08:14you know, we eat a lot of fish. Can you say anything?
- 1:08:19No, no. So.
- 1:08:22Maybe an outcast and be like I don't want fish.
- 1:08:25What? Right.
- 1:08:26OK, but those kind of things also, you know, the way people
- 1:08:30talk, the way people dress, the way people act, it's all that
- 1:08:32you got to be aware of. There are some things that like
- 1:08:38in the Hispanic culture, when you visit someone, you're
- 1:08:41supposed to offer them a drink and they have to take it.
- 1:08:45Did you know that? No.
- 1:08:48So you go somewhere and you're like, I'm not thirsty, you know?
- 1:08:51Like when I was in counselling, I was visiting 7 Hispanic
- 1:08:54families in a day. Every house I'd go to, they'd
- 1:08:56offer me something to drink. Sometimes it'd be a little drink
- 1:08:59and sometimes it'd be this big glass like this, right?
- 1:09:02Isn't it like, just like courtesy I guess?
- 1:09:05No, it. Yeah, but it's a culture thing.
- 1:09:07Oh. I thought that was just the.
- 1:09:08Culture is also to accept it. Even if you just take a little
- 1:09:11sip and put it back down and never touch it again, you've
- 1:09:13accepted it. Just like when we went to Mexico
- 1:09:17and they told us to try papaya. We had to.
- 1:09:21They did. Not say that we no, no, we
- 1:09:23literally. Well, they didn't say yet.
- 1:09:25They served it to us. They served it to us and we had
- 1:09:27and we're. Just dumb.
- 1:09:28And we're like, oh, watermelon. Oh well, no, no, we said
- 1:09:32cantaloupe First off, I. Said watermelon.
- 1:09:34Oh. You said well, OK, I thought it
- 1:09:36was cantaloupe. I didn't know.
- 1:09:37Cantaloupe like bright orange that was like that was that was
- 1:09:39like a. It was orange, red, yes.
- 1:09:41The point being is they offered it to us.
- 1:09:44We had, we had, we tried it. Question.
- 1:09:46It I had a question it kind. Of gave me his stuff.
- 1:09:49I'm going to reap up by it again and we've tried twice and it's
- 1:09:53not going to happen. The Golden Corral, I see it
- 1:09:56there and I get terrified every time we have.
- 1:09:58PTSD. Yeah.
- 1:10:00Papayas stress traumatic disorder that just can't even.
- 1:10:09Papayas stress traumatic disorder.
- 1:10:11Oh my God. Anyway, overreacting and losing
- 1:10:14authenticity. You have to adapt.
- 1:10:16Don't erase. You got to be who you are.
- 1:10:18You guys. Don't forget that.
- 1:10:19You got to be who you are. You can fit in without losing
- 1:10:22yourself and ignore red flags such as culture fit matters.
- 1:10:26Trust your gut. If something feels off, it
- 1:10:28probably is. You know, you may not be aware
- 1:10:32of a culture, you may not understand what's going on.
- 1:10:35So it's very important to ask. You know they're, I'm trying to
- 1:10:44think where they came from. I don't know who's Nigeria or
- 1:10:49Guyana, but I had a friend of mine who had some people moving
- 1:10:53next to her and they had these, this fish that was fermenting
- 1:10:58outside and it wasn't trash, that was them fermenting it.
- 1:11:04And it was too strong for their house.
- 1:11:06They put it outside and in apartments, you have two doors
- 1:11:09right next to each other, right? So she'd walk out and have to
- 1:11:11smell it all the time. And she told them, you know,
- 1:11:13this is not appropriate, that we're supposed to put it.
- 1:11:16She was you don't somewhere else there's.
- 1:11:19An apartment. Put it in the back or put it in
- 1:11:21the quad. Put it somewhere, not in front
- 1:11:23of another person's door. But.
- 1:11:24That's where they live, that's where they cook, that's where
- 1:11:27they eat. You got to understand cultures.
- 1:11:29So I, I, she told me this and I said, look, talk to them and
- 1:11:32say, look, I understand your culture, so and so forth or
- 1:11:36whatever, whatever. Give her some tips.
- 1:11:37And they, they came up to an agreement, you know, she says,
- 1:11:41I'm not here at these times. If you can put it out there
- 1:11:45during that time, that'd be best, right?
- 1:11:47You know, So they, they worked it out.
- 1:11:51But yeah, it's one of those things, food culture, the
- 1:11:55culture of food culture of talking, cultural dressing.
- 1:11:59You know, what I think is so funny is those people that are
- 1:12:01very Hispanic, I always talk about Hispanic because I'm
- 1:12:04Hispanic. There's people that are very
- 1:12:06Hispanic and they celebrate the holidays big time.
- 1:12:10And there's some that only celebrate it once in a while.
- 1:12:13Like, for example, you're Mexican, right?
- 1:12:16More Mexican than me. I keep throwing.
- 1:12:17I'll keep to say that for the rest of my life.
- 1:12:21We were in Mexico City. We went to the Socalo where they
- 1:12:24had the grito for the cry of the revolution, for freedom.
- 1:12:29We were there, you know. What?
- 1:12:35No, sorry, I thought I heard something.
- 1:12:37And that's a big part of Mexican culture to be, to go there, you
- 1:12:42know, to be there on New Year's Eve, that's a party.
- 1:12:46That is a huge. You think Times Square is a
- 1:12:49party? No, barely.
- 1:12:52Everybody's is so packed there, nobody can move.
- 1:12:55The SoCal was the same way, OK, but it's a lot larger area.
- 1:13:01It's crazy, crazy. Even more packed.
- 1:13:03Yeah, OK, yeah, it's, it's crazy, you know, But when
- 1:13:08someone says, you know, have you ever gone to Mexico, Conor can
- 1:13:12say, oh, I've traveled Mexico. I spent a week here and a week
- 1:13:14there. We've done this, we've done
- 1:13:15that. You know, you probably don't
- 1:13:16remember where you went, but for a Mexican to say, yeah, I've, I
- 1:13:21visited Mexico and I, I, I didn't just go to Juarez, you
- 1:13:24know, I actually went to Mexico. I went to Acapulco.
- 1:13:27We went to, you know, we saw, we walked up to the pyramids.
- 1:13:30We, you know, we've been there and everything.
- 1:13:32Amazing stuff, right? Hated.
- 1:13:34The pyramids. Oh.
- 1:13:35Because you were dehydrated. No, I was hungry.
- 1:13:37I haven't eaten all day. You take me on a hike up a
- 1:13:40pyramid. OK.
- 1:13:41OK. Going side to side, mind you,
- 1:13:44not up. We was going to side.
- 1:13:46Does a long line side to side? To side.
- 1:13:48We had a weight also. Yeah.
- 1:13:51It was horrible. I'm not going to it.
- 1:13:52Was horrible, we had to do that two times where we going to do
- 1:13:56it 2 times but then I was like no I.
- 1:13:59Was agree there was more. I'm tired, yeah.
- 1:14:03I don't even know what time that was at.
- 1:14:05It felt like high noon with the sun directly right above us it.
- 1:14:09Was it was horrible. It was I'm not going to like,
- 1:14:12and Mexico is human and everything, you know, No.
- 1:14:14Definitely. So, yeah, you know, being
- 1:14:19Mexican, I can say I've taken him to the capital.
- 1:14:22I've taken him to see the majority of the places where I
- 1:14:26would want him to see in or I want to see in Mexico.
- 1:14:28I can say that, you know, do I still want to have other places
- 1:14:31I want to go? Yes.
- 1:14:32But does he want to go? No.
- 1:14:34But if I said let's go to Cancun for spring break, I'd be that
- 1:14:39old creeper to where Cancun. I'd be that old creeper there.
- 1:14:43No, I can't do that. As much as I'd love to party,
- 1:14:46that's not going to happen. All right, so we talked about
- 1:14:50those pitfalls you have. Let's talk about the Shields
- 1:14:53that we have that help you protect you from getting burned.
- 1:14:56These are 7 heat Shields. It's time for a break.
- 1:14:59Hot takes with the Murph man will return after the Your
- 1:15:10corporate culture heat shield is the authenticity anchor.
- 1:15:14The heat source is the pressure to conform and lose your
- 1:15:17identity cultural fit. Deploy the shield by following
- 1:15:21these three strategies. Define your core values.
- 1:15:25Identify the three principles you bring that make you a
- 1:15:28cultural ad to any team. Adapt, don't erase.
- 1:15:33Use situational awareness to adjust your communication style
- 1:15:36without sacrificing your unique perspective.
- 1:15:39Trust your gut. If you feel you must suppress
- 1:15:43your identity completely to fit in, that is a sign the
- 1:15:46environment needs a review. The armor is on now.
- 1:15:50It's time to process the heat. A quick shout out to into the
- 1:15:54weeds. If you guys haven't seen that
- 1:15:57podcast, I'm on share broadcast radio.
- 1:15:59You got to check it out. You know, she gave us a quick
- 1:16:01like so I want to give a shout out to her.
- 1:16:02Enjoy thanks for joining as well.
- 1:16:05Hope everything's going well. Now the heat Shields.
- 1:16:08Let's talk about that real quick.
- 1:16:09OK? The Cobra culture is important
- 1:16:13because you have the authenticity anchor.
- 1:16:17The heat source is the heat shield is to conform and lose
- 1:16:25your identity is what you want to avoid, right?
- 1:16:27You, you want to, you don't want to just fit in.
- 1:16:29You want to add to the culture. Define your core values,
- 1:16:31identify your 3 principles. You bring that you make a
- 1:16:35cultural add to any team. Like what can you bring to the
- 1:16:37team? Adapt, don't erase.
- 1:16:41Use situational awareness to adjust to your communication
- 1:16:44side without sacrificing your unique perspective.
- 1:16:47And trust your gut. If you feel you must suppress
- 1:16:50your identity to completely fit in, that's a sign that the
- 1:16:53environment needs a review. The environment needs a review.
- 1:16:58If you feel like you have to fit in, you can't be yourself.
- 1:17:00Because if you can't be authentic, where are you
- 1:17:03working? Right.
- 1:17:05Yeah, there. There's a few things you never
- 1:17:11talk about at work. Religion and politics and money.
- 1:17:19OK, you should talk about your paychecks.
- 1:17:25It doesn't cause a problem. I'll tell you right now, there's
- 1:17:27not a lot. You can't be cautious if you
- 1:17:30ever do. But religion and politics are
- 1:17:32two things that can create a lot of issues, a lot of issues.
- 1:17:42Certain religions have certain beliefs.
- 1:17:44Certain times of year, they celebrate certain things.
- 1:17:47If you don't know, ask. There's nothing wrong 'cause
- 1:17:49you, you don't know, right? You don't know the culture you
- 1:17:52got. You can ask.
- 1:17:53It's OK. Yeah, OK.
- 1:17:58At the same time, though, if they respond to you in a
- 1:18:01negative way, that's not cool either.
- 1:18:04You know, 'cause you're trying to be genuine and you're asking,
- 1:18:05Hey, tell me more about this, this holiday of yours, right?
- 1:18:13Do me a favor, look up when did Kwanzaa start?
- 1:18:19Kwanzaa KWANZAI want. I want to see if this is right
- 1:18:25before I say it. Kwanzaa, December 26th, 191966.
- 1:18:32OK, that is that I just said we're not talking about
- 1:18:36religions, but here's an example of what I'm referring to.
- 1:18:40Kwanzaa is the African American celebration of in during
- 1:18:43Christmas time. Have you ever heard of that?
- 1:18:46I've heard of Kwanzaa, yeah. And I had a kid come into my my
- 1:18:51office for, for counseling one day and she's dressed up in
- 1:18:54African regalia. She's dressed up in exactly what
- 1:18:58you would any stereotype you would think of, right?
- 1:19:01You think of African regalia and she's like, I'm celebrating
- 1:19:05Kwanzaa. I said, good for you, good for
- 1:19:08you. I said, tell me more about it.
- 1:19:11And she's like, oh, it's this old, old traditional religion
- 1:19:15coming back from Africa from many, many years ago.
- 1:19:19And I was like, oh, interesting, you know?
- 1:19:22And her father was like, no. And the girl was like, what?
- 1:19:30And he says it started in the during the civil rights
- 1:19:32revolution as a way for Black Americans to celebrate their
- 1:19:35heritage. And because of all the racism
- 1:19:39and everything with Martin Luther King coming out with
- 1:19:42civil rights and all that, you know what I mean?
- 1:19:44They came up with Kwanzaa. It's not this traditional thing
- 1:19:48from years and years and years ago.
- 1:19:50That's what I think is, is people don't know that.
- 1:19:53I didn't know that, right? But the father knew, obviously
- 1:19:55he celebrates and he, he understood why.
- 1:19:58But it makes me think like, why do we start celebrating
- 1:20:01Christmas? Why do we celebrate Valentine's
- 1:20:03Day? Why do we celebrate Easter?
- 1:20:04It's all candy related. Yeah, right.
- 1:20:09Birthdays also. Yeah.
- 1:20:12Whoa, OK. One of the one of the strangest
- 1:20:20traditions I've ever seen is the Mexican pinatas.
- 1:20:24Why? OK, you got to go beat this
- 1:20:27pinata up to get candy out. No big deal.
- 1:20:31I went one time to Central Texas.
- 1:20:33I was at a party. They got a pinata and it wasn't
- 1:20:36tearing, it wasn't breaking. I went in and I reached my hand
- 1:20:40into it to tear it apart and it was a woven basket.
- 1:20:45I cut my hands up on that basket.
- 1:20:48They're beating this basket. Nothing's coming out is the
- 1:20:51worst peanut I've ever seen. In the old days, they used to be
- 1:20:54made with clay pots so you would crack it and you know, but what
- 1:20:59I think is the horrible thing about a pinata is we have themed
- 1:21:05parties, right? OK, you can pick a children's
- 1:21:08theme. Yeah, pick 10, Spider Man.
- 1:21:13Spider Man. OK, let's do a Spider Man theme
- 1:21:15party. Let's buy a Spider Man pinata.
- 1:21:17Now here's a stick. Go beat up your favorite
- 1:21:18character, right? You know no one.
- 1:21:24I've never had seen a kid go oh, that we can't, we can't do that.
- 1:21:27No, that'd be go and beat the crap out of that character,
- 1:21:30right? Yeah, he's helpless.
- 1:21:34Boom, yeah, right. But you have to spin around a
- 1:21:39couple times and you know, there there, if you look in TikTok and
- 1:21:43look up Pinetta fails, there's some oh.
- 1:21:45Yeah, dude. Horrible stuff.
- 1:21:46I. Saw one where she was trying to
- 1:21:49hit it and they get like taught like moving it so she kept
- 1:21:53missing and her grandma or something just recording right
- 1:21:56in front of her. They put it up, swing it hit the
- 1:22:01phone and the face of the grandma and she just fell and
- 1:22:04I'm like, oh, that's got to hurt.
- 1:22:07I didn't see her move after that.
- 1:22:09I think she's like, well, the, the knock down, she was like
- 1:22:14just just you see. The phone on the ground, you
- 1:22:17know, one of the other traditions, part of the pinata
- 1:22:20process is the person hitting the pinata doesn't get a lot of
- 1:22:22candy. I know that's BS and it's a
- 1:22:25birthday person. Well, not always, but you know,
- 1:22:29anyone could break it. But The thing is that kids
- 1:22:31swinging the stick, right? Dali, Dali, whatever, we sing,
- 1:22:36right? And then all of a sudden cracks,
- 1:22:38there's candy all over the place and the kids blindfolded can't
- 1:22:44see where they're going. Everyone else is running down.
- 1:22:46They're still swinging because I think they're trying to hit the
- 1:22:48pinata. They don't know it's over.
- 1:22:50Kids are going to hit with sticks.
- 1:22:51It's just an amazing thing. It's fun if you're not a, if
- 1:22:56you're not aware of that Hispanic tradition, and you take
- 1:22:58your kid to this party and the pinata breaks and there's candy.
- 1:23:04Your kid runs out and gets the candy.
- 1:23:06And he was a parent, like, no, stop.
- 1:23:08Right? That's the only way they're
- 1:23:10going to get candy, right. I saw another pinata one time
- 1:23:14where they actually, they pull a string and it slowly unravels on
- 1:23:18the pinata and it spins it. And when it gets to the very
- 1:23:20bottom, the whole thing opens and it just shoots candy in all
- 1:23:23directions. Yeah, yeah, that's cool.
- 1:23:25But people want to hit stuff. Yeah, it was.
- 1:23:27I don't want to see something. I want to do something.
- 1:23:30Yeah, I want to. It's the.
- 1:23:31Most violent violent event at a party, right?
- 1:23:39Kinda. Where else can you get hit with
- 1:23:42a stick at a party? Well.
- 1:23:43Not a state, but like violent. What else is violent?
- 1:23:46Jumping balloon, dude. Oh, the brinka Brinka.
- 1:23:49That's what we call it in Spanish.
- 1:23:51Every time there's a jumping balloon, there's always people
- 1:23:54fighting in there. Tell, tell, tell people what a
- 1:23:58beating company gun is at a party.
- 1:24:01Why? Why you?
- 1:24:04It sounds like you have a story. I don't.
- 1:24:06Know when, when, When everyone thinks of a jumping balloon,
- 1:24:09they think of kids going up and down and up and down and up and
- 1:24:11down you. Know we're thinking of rest like
- 1:24:12a boxing ring. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:16What was one of your goals as a kid?
- 1:24:19Everyone person you know, but everyone runs to one side and
- 1:24:22tries to knock it over. Oh.
- 1:24:24Well, yeah, we used to do that, yeah.
- 1:24:27And you always want to get the kids that aren't really rough,
- 1:24:29throw them into the Nets. They get stuck on the side and
- 1:24:31hanging off the edge. It's violent.
- 1:24:34It's fun, but it's violent. Especially if it's a family
- 1:24:38gathering. Yeah, right.
- 1:24:39And then you always have those, the drunk you, you know, why do
- 1:24:41you have to have beer at a kids party 'cause that's what we do.
- 1:24:45You know, people get drunk at a kids parties.
- 1:24:47Like what is people who are not aware of the culture of the
- 1:24:49Hispanics that we, the way we celebrate.
- 1:24:51It's just very interesting for to me because you take someone,
- 1:24:54they're like, what is this? What's happening?
- 1:24:55What's you know, what, what are they singing?
- 1:24:58You know, there, there's a lot of stuff there that I just think
- 1:25:02that's pretty funny. Yeah, it is.
- 1:25:04It is right. I'm just going to pinatas.
- 1:25:07Really. Yeah.
- 1:25:08One time we were in Ridoso and we we had a bat.
- 1:25:12Oh God, we had clay pots back then.
- 1:25:15It wasn't these little sticks and someone hits the pot and
- 1:25:19breaks off the top of the bat and it flies and has my dad in
- 1:25:22the face and we were all just like, are you OK here?
- 1:25:28Deal. Grab the stick.
- 1:25:30Let's keep going. We get another bat.
- 1:25:32It was like this. Just what we did.
- 1:25:35You know, it's crazy. Anyway, let me take a quick
- 1:25:37break. We'll be right back after these
- 1:25:39messages. It's time for a break.

- 1:30:41like hey. Oh, I was walking around.
- 1:30:45I'd be walking back and forth and I just said hey, every time.
- 1:30:49I'm like OK. You know, there was a song that
- 1:30:52they used to play back in the early 90s or late 90s, whenever
- 1:30:56it was. And there's a phrase where a
- 1:30:58girl would be like one of those, you know, they play clips of
- 1:31:00people talking. Yeah, she's like, I'm with the
- 1:31:02DJ, you know, and then boom, everybody.
- 1:31:05'S with the DJ, yeah, No, no. No, but that that was a clip of
- 1:31:09the song. So one day I'm at Club one O 1
- 1:31:11downtown and I bump into my brother and he goes, what are
- 1:31:16you doing here? And I said, oh, I'm here with
- 1:31:18the DJ. And he started laughing.
- 1:31:22And then all of a sudden the DJ goes, well, Sean Ruffy DS come
- 1:31:25to the DJ booth. I work with the guy and he saw
- 1:31:30me, so he's like, hey, come over and say hi, you know?
- 1:31:33But it was like literally it. Was perfect What?
- 1:31:35Are you doing here? I'm with the DJ.
- 1:31:37Ha ha. That's funny, dude.
- 1:31:39Well, he's going to DJ booth. He's like, that's funny.
- 1:31:50All right, so back to the show. Let's talk about the afterburn.
- 1:31:54Let's let's reflect on some of the things we've learned today.
- 1:31:55Connor. OK, OK.

- 1:32:10afterburn. Here are some questions for you
- 1:32:12to reflect on. What kind of culture helps me
- 1:32:15thrive? How do I observe and adapt
- 1:32:18without losing myself? What's one question I can ask to
- 1:32:21better understand my workplace reflection Complete.
- 1:32:25The reflection is deep. Now let's take this to the
- 1:32:28digital front. All right, So what kind of
- 1:32:34culture helps me thrive? That's very important to know.
- 1:32:40What kind of culture do you need to fit into?
- 1:32:44One thing I hate is micromanagers.
- 1:32:47You know what those are? Yeah, deal with that.
- 1:32:50Try picking at everything and just you need to do this, do
- 1:32:55that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, right.
- 1:32:57And then not a manager. Right, I had a friend of mine
- 1:33:01trying to help me out when I first started my job and I'm
- 1:33:03like dude please light. Back off please, It's.
- 1:33:06Annoying me. It's not helping me, it's
- 1:33:07annoying me. You know, I hate micromanagers.
- 1:33:11When someone says do this and here's your deadline, here's
- 1:33:16what you know, you have to do these things.
- 1:33:18I, I excel, I, I do great. I'm like, OK, you know, last
- 1:33:26year I want to start the podcast at the beginning of August, and
- 1:33:29I spent the entire summer prepping for the show, right?
- 1:33:33And every now and then, you know, I try to do the episodes
- 1:33:36of slides, everything ahead of time.
- 1:33:37And every now and then I'm like, oh God, I haven't done anything
- 1:33:40yet. So there I am Thursday night or
- 1:33:41Friday night working on last minute.
- 1:33:43I hate that. But, you know, micromanagers is
- 1:33:47a culture I don't fit into. So when someone says, what's
- 1:33:49your greatest weakness? I'll say a person who
- 1:33:52micromanages because I understand I need to be told to
- 1:33:55do things, but tell me to do them if I'm wrong, correct me if
- 1:33:59I'm right, you don't need to tell me I'm doing a good job.
- 1:34:02Just let me do my job. Just leave me alone.
- 1:34:07That's that's part of the hardest thing for a manager to
- 1:34:09do is to let go of an employee like that and giving them free
- 1:34:13reign, you know, But I, my boss, I'd love her to my new boss,
- 1:34:17love her to death because like one time I had to cover for a
- 1:34:19teacher. I mean, I was covering for a
- 1:34:21teacher because she was on vacation for a week.
- 1:34:23She got a cruise or something. So I said let's go to I'm, I'm
- 1:34:29covering her class. I'm, I'm grading papers and I
- 1:34:31have a queue. Do you know the queues?
- 1:34:33Like a list of papers I got to sign?
- 1:34:35I'm great. So I'm grading them and I'm
- 1:34:37going through and finally I have about half the day through, I
- 1:34:40see a different teacher's name in my queue and I, I go to my Co
- 1:34:46worker. I'm like, oh dude, like why am I
- 1:34:49in? Like what?
- 1:34:50You know, I'm creating her papers.
- 1:34:53It must have been a mistake when they added this other teacher to
- 1:34:55me or something. You know what I mean?
- 1:34:56Yeah, at. The end of the day, about two, I
- 1:34:58get out at 3:00. At 2:30-ish, my boss texts me,
- 1:35:01hey, did you notice this teacher's in your classes?
- 1:35:02I'm like, yeah, it's just OK. Just want to make sure you were
- 1:35:05aware of it. You're going to be taking over
- 1:35:08the class for the rest of the semester.
- 1:35:11Oh, you're going to be taking the class until we find a
- 1:35:13replacement, which I knew was this semester.
- 1:35:17And I said, OK, thank you. That is what it's so much
- 1:35:21appreciated 'cause she basically gave me a second job and she's
- 1:35:27like, you got this right. I'm like, yeah, good.
- 1:35:31I hope you got it. That's the only option we have.
- 1:35:35Right. But that's the face she has in
- 1:35:38me as an employee and the relationship I had with her as a
- 1:35:41boss. Because I can literally just
- 1:35:43say, Hey, I, I, I need help or, or I can't do this or whatever
- 1:35:49the case may be, right? Having that micromanager, just
- 1:35:52one of those things, how do I observe and adapt without losing
- 1:35:55myself? Same thing, you know, you, you
- 1:35:58have to know who you are and where you fit in.
- 1:36:00And one question you can ask to better understand your
- 1:36:03workplace. Ask yourself that.
- 1:36:06What is a question I can ask right now to understand what's
- 1:36:09going on, right? And I remember one time I was
- 1:36:14really frustrated at work, and I told someone to do something.
- 1:36:17I wasn't their boss or anything. And this girl looked at me and
- 1:36:20she says she's not a girl, she's a lady.
- 1:36:22She looked at me. And she says, you're not mad at
- 1:36:26me, Don't take it out on me. And I said, I'm, I'm sorry.
- 1:36:34You know, most people have been like, I'm not taking it out on
- 1:36:38you. I'm not mad.
- 1:36:39No, I was mad and I was taking it out on her and I just felt
- 1:36:43bad. And that's it.
- 1:36:44You know, when it's when I know I'm wrong, I'm like, OK, I
- 1:36:49messed up. Thank you.
- 1:36:51And we move on. That was it.
- 1:36:53We never talked about it again. It was it was fixed.
- 1:36:55You know, Penn and Teller, you know, remember them, they don't
- 1:37:01really talk much. They're not the best of friends.
- 1:37:04Usually when they argue, they argue about the show.
- 1:37:08They never apologize to each other.
- 1:37:10But Teller knows he's better with Pen than without, and Pen
- 1:37:14knows he's better with Teller than without.
- 1:37:16And they know the most important thing in their life is that
- 1:37:19show, and they can put everything else to the side
- 1:37:23because it's for the show. They don't have to be friends,
- 1:37:26really, but they're together everywhere they go, right?
- 1:37:31Like Beyoncé and Jay-Z, although I don't think they're together
- 1:37:37right now. No, actually, no, Jay.
- 1:37:42Z is still in jail, right? Oh.
- 1:37:44Yeah, Jay-Z is in Oh. JD or P Diddy No.
- 1:37:46That's two different people, no? Yeah, they're two different
- 1:37:50people, Yeah. So it's not Beyoncé and Jay-Z
- 1:37:54who's with P Diddy. P Diddy.
- 1:37:57OK, who's the one that got caught with the the whole
- 1:37:59scandal? The Oil Baby Oil P.
- 1:38:02Diddy P. Diddy.
- 1:38:03OK, who's dating P Diddy? I see Beyoncé and Jay-Z.
- 1:38:07They're still together. Yeah, I don't know why he has a
- 1:38:17history, but he's dating no one right now.
- 1:38:19Well, his last one is. Someone's bitch in jail.
- 1:38:25Dana Tran. OK, so it wasn't Jay-Z.
- 1:38:28I I don't know. I just, I thought Jay-Z and
- 1:38:30Beyoncé and I thought Jay-Z went to jail, but no, he didn't.
- 1:38:31My bad. I apologize for that.
- 1:38:32No, Jay. Z did go to jail for what?
- 1:38:39Abusiveness. Something hold.
- 1:38:46On why? Did he go to jail?
- 1:38:49I don't, I don't know what isn't the Jay-Z show.
- 1:38:53Oh, he hasn't? What?
- 1:38:54Yeah, it's, it was PDD. That's what I'm saying.
- 1:38:57Everyone thinks it was Jay-Z, but no.
- 1:39:00All right, so that was the afterburn.
- 1:39:03Well he he was in a civil suit for sexual assault.
- 1:39:08Where is PDD? That's OK.
- 1:39:10I I knew they were related somehow, but yeah, OK I.
- 1:39:13I thought he got to jail for that.
- 1:39:15Wow. OK, never mind.
- 1:39:18Yeah, so. Ish, he should have been.
- 1:39:23Oh yeah. So anyway, those are the
- 1:39:25reflections for today. But let's talk about the digital
- 1:39:28inferno because technology can help you with this.
- 1:39:33So here's something called the digital inferno.
- 1:39:44Slack. Etiquette is situational.
- 1:39:46Slack is the new water cooler. Digital communication requires
- 1:39:51heightened, heightened key chains.
- 1:39:53Use AI writing assistance before sending messages to ensure your
- 1:39:57formality matches the team's established workplace norms.
- 1:40:00Verify the channel. Always double check your
- 1:40:03recipients and the channel before hitting send to avoid
- 1:40:06public etiquette mistakes. Align with the norm.
- 1:40:10Observe if your team prefers direct messaging for urgent
- 1:40:12items or channel based communication.
- 1:40:14Then follow that lead. The machine is optimized.
- 1:40:18Now for the final word. All right.
- 1:40:21So the final tip, I'm sorry, did you move it again?
- 1:40:24No. Sean, you've been doing that.
- 1:40:27I had to move it back. I just forgot to.
- 1:40:31Perform a tone check on your writing using a assistance like
- 1:40:34Grammarly and things like that will help you write better.
- 1:40:37OK, when you need to write something harsh, you know, check
- 1:40:42it with your AI, make sure it's a good tone.
- 1:40:45You can actually go to Word. Word has that too.
- 1:40:47You can check it for professional writing and it
- 1:40:49corrects it for you. Oh yeah, where?
- 1:40:52Yeah, verify the channel. Always double check your
- 1:40:54recipients and the channel before sending because there's
- 1:40:56nothing worse than sending a reply all to people that you
- 1:40:58don't want to replay all to and align them with the norms.
- 1:41:02Observe if your team prefers strict messaging or urgent
- 1:41:05items. Let's talk about that real
- 1:41:06quick. In our in our team, we have a a
- 1:41:14teacher thread where they put out information for the
- 1:41:16teachers, but then the teacher has a question and then the
- 1:41:20people start answering and the bosses come in and go.
- 1:41:22This is only for putting information out.
- 1:41:26If you have a question, please message to your directors.
- 1:41:30Yeah, right. Because all of a sudden the
- 1:41:33message is not lost in the thread.
- 1:41:35You don't know where it went. Here's one thing as a teacher,
- 1:41:40you know, we, we discourage the use of AII use AIA lot, but you
- 1:41:45don't want it to replace your work.
- 1:41:47You want to enhance your work. As a teacher, you use Grammarly
- 1:41:52and you could say you write really poorly, right?
- 1:41:55And you use Grammarly. You're making all these
- 1:41:57corrections and everything and it comes out 99% AI because you
- 1:42:02did all the corrections using Grammarly.
- 1:42:04We're asking you to use Grammarly.
- 1:42:09At what point is it too much? So we were, we were talking
- 1:42:12about this at the meeting on Thursday.
- 1:42:13I was talking about missed the first week of class, came in the
- 1:42:16second week, took the test and in 5 minutes she got 100.
- 1:42:21So she obviously used AI although I don't know how she
- 1:42:23actually used it or she just knows her stuff.
- 1:42:26Hold on. So the teacher reached out to
- 1:42:28her and says I. Need to come talk.
- 1:42:29I need to come to the office and talk to.
- 1:42:30Me and she comes in and she tells the kid what's going on.
- 1:42:33You know, did you explain to me how you were able to do this?
- 1:42:35Let me ask you 3 questions and she says a medium, a easy medium
- 1:42:39and a hard question. She didn't know any of them.
- 1:42:42It's just how were you able to answer 100% correct on my test
- 1:42:45it's. Just I used AI.
- 1:42:48And she's like I. Figured you know, so you got to
- 1:42:52rewrite. The paper and do this I said I
- 1:42:55have had students use AI and one of the things I look for is M
- 1:42:58dash, which is a double dash I've showed you.
- 1:43:00Remember it's a little longer than regular dash.
- 1:43:03If it's bolded, that's another AI thing.
- 1:43:05I don't have to like read it to to see if it's AI or not.
- 1:43:09The other thing is I add like keywords like in white right?
- 1:43:12I told you that. I highlighted and I say, OK, you
- 1:43:14know, yeah, talk about Freud, right?
- 1:43:19But I had AI, have had more than one student.
- 1:43:24When you replay the AI, it says, OK, here's what you're asking
- 1:43:27for. I've gone ahead and I've
- 1:43:28organized everything about Freud.
- 1:43:30Then gives a list of Freud and it says, is there anything else
- 1:43:34you would like me to add? Right, You hit copy and you hit
- 1:43:38paste. It copies the entire feedback
- 1:43:41from the AI, including the statement of here's what she
- 1:43:44asked me to write for you, and here's what you know, if you
- 1:43:47actually do that, if you get a cheat, do it right.
- 1:43:50Yeah, like come. On I.
- 1:43:52Used to click and drag it like. Don't double click and try to
- 1:43:56copy everything on the page with the new platform I'm I'm using
- 1:44:00if a kid tries to highlight a question to copy and paste into.
- 1:44:02AI it actually tells you you're you know a lot of copy and paste
- 1:44:05this oh wow yeah, you know, you can respond there's a lot
- 1:44:09there's a. Lot of things to do to avoid
- 1:44:10cheating. But the latest thing they're
- 1:44:12doing now. Let me see what I want to get
- 1:44:14your opinion on this, OK? I I have not.
- 1:44:15Again, everything's this. He's never asked me anything off
- 1:44:19the cuff, OK. I don't prepare him for these
- 1:44:21because I want honest reactions. And are you going to get what?
- 1:44:27And like and the answer you're going to get is just.
- 1:44:30Oh yeah. OK, You taking the test?
- 1:44:3350 questions on the computer. Oh right, OK, you have to have
- 1:44:37your webcam on and. Your phone has to.
- 1:44:40Have a second webcam from the site so you can see if anyone's
- 1:44:46sitting. Wow, what about it?
- 1:44:50That's the new standard for what test?
- 1:44:55For testing like star testing. No, no, no, we.
- 1:44:59Don't do start testing. We do start testing in person.
- 1:45:01I'm talking about like, oh, like online, yeah.
- 1:45:06How do you feel about that? You're not getting on.
- 1:45:10My phone so. Just so I could put a webcam to
- 1:45:13make sure no. One's there.
- 1:45:14That's BS. That's why I at UTEP there's a
- 1:45:20they use something where you have to like literally turn your
- 1:45:23laptop around to show the surrounding from the webcam.
- 1:45:27Like there's no one around me or anything, but at any given
- 1:45:30moment or at the beginning or start beginning, OK, then
- 1:45:32someone can. Sit down next to obviously,
- 1:45:34yeah, but someone can sit like have you seen those those
- 1:45:37commercial those TIK? Toks Where they have, they have.
- 1:45:39An AI phone right here. An AI phone.
- 1:45:43Oh OK, Their phone with AI. Open.
- 1:45:45OK, better. Language.
- 1:45:47OK, yeah. And the phone's there and
- 1:45:54they'll ask a question and then AI answers it.
- 1:45:57You're like, oh, so how would I do this?
- 1:46:00Well, first I would do this. Second, I would do this.
- 1:46:02Show me your hands. I'm not using the phone, you
- 1:46:06know there. Have you seen those videos?
- 1:46:08Yeah, it's all fake. But yeah, it's all it's AI.
- 1:46:12Know that? Yeah.
- 1:46:13What I'm saying is that's not, you know, I have the phone that
- 1:46:15you're not. Going to see it, right?
- 1:46:18Oh yeah, there are ways to cheat.
- 1:46:21I I could show the whole room and.
- 1:46:23Then someone comes sit down. Afterwards I can have the.
- 1:46:24Camera here and have you. Sitting right behind the camera.
- 1:46:27Yeah, there's no point in putting, but now the A is
- 1:46:31getting smart. And it can say you're looking to
- 1:46:32the side. You're looking away, so you're
- 1:46:36not paying into the test. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:46:42Whatever. I look at my phone because it's
- 1:46:44notification because. It's my phone.
- 1:46:46Well you're right, if I get in trouble for that, then don't let
- 1:46:49me have my phone. Out honestly well.
- 1:46:51That you're not supposed to well the guy make me use it for a
- 1:46:54webcam, but it's. It my notification is going to
- 1:46:57pop up. Anyways, right, they can't tell
- 1:46:59me to shut it off or anything. You it's standard.
- 1:47:02Well here here's the thing. What I do and my boss is like,
- 1:47:06why do you do? This and I said look SBS my job
- 1:47:10as a teacher is to teach you a test ensures.
- 1:47:13I'm teaching you correctly. OK with the way I do my papers
- 1:47:18and everything. You're literally writing a
- 1:47:1910,000 page paper by the end of the semester.
- 1:47:22A book in some ways. OK damn.
- 1:47:27When you're taking a test, it's just.
- 1:47:29I have to give tests. But I give you from Wednesday to
- 1:47:32Sunday to do the test, right? You can start it, stop it
- 1:47:35anytime you want until you get submit.
- 1:47:38If you're in school Connor, and you have 5 friends sitting in
- 1:47:41the class with you, what are you going to do?
- 1:47:42Be honest obviously if if they haven't done it yet.
- 1:47:49Or if. It's at the same time.
- 1:47:52Because you said for a couple days.
- 1:47:58Me personally, I would. Forget about it till the day of
- 1:48:01and then I'd be. Like OK but.
- 1:48:02That's not the question. I would if you're if you have 5
- 1:48:05friends that have the same class if we're.
- 1:48:06Going to do it. Together.
- 1:48:07Yeah, you're going to do. It together.
- 1:48:08So what I do is. I randomize the questions.
- 1:48:12Meaning all 50 get randomized for everybody.
- 1:48:15OK, and they randomized the answers.
- 1:48:17So the question could be what is cultural fit?
- 1:48:23Oh that's number 44 in mine. What's it on?
- 1:48:26Yours 2 What's it on yours? 5 Whatever.
- 1:48:28OK, the answer's C It's A. Here it's B.
- 1:48:33There. It's D here.
- 1:48:35Yeah, they. Don't catch on to that.
- 1:48:38Some people don't. Yeah, OK.
- 1:48:41The biggest. OK.
- 1:48:43When I catch someone so blatantly cheating that they're
- 1:48:45stupid about it, I get angry. If you can beat the system.
- 1:48:50I don't agree with it, but I'll give you props.
- 1:48:52One guy we had to answer questions out of the book right?
- 1:48:57And it was ACD. So you would answer the
- 1:48:58questions in print and he would turn in the papers, right?
- 1:49:03This guy told his friend. Hey, can I borrow your?
- 1:49:05Papers so I can do the answers. Yeah, he gives him the papers.
- 1:49:09The guy comes back the next day and hands in a copy of his
- 1:49:14friend's questions. He didn't do the work and it's.
- 1:49:19Literally a copy of a highlighted.
- 1:49:21Paper so I was able to get the kid who highlighted it because
- 1:49:25there wasn't a lot of. Kids who highlighted.
- 1:49:27And his paper and look at it and be like, this is the same exact
- 1:49:31copy. So I I said, I need these two
- 1:49:35students to stick around after class.
- 1:49:37Sat them down, and I said, all right, let's talk about this.
- 1:49:41I said, it's not a question. I know you lent your paper to
- 1:49:45him or he stole it from you. One or the other.
- 1:49:47That's not a question, I said. But you get a 0.
- 1:49:53The one that copied it. Yeah.
- 1:49:57And you get a 0 for giving. It to him.
- 1:50:02Any question? Yeah.
- 1:50:06You know he goes. I have a.
- 1:50:07Question and what he goes How did you know we?
- 1:50:09We did this, I said because you highlighted your paper, he goes,
- 1:50:13well done. I'm like he copied it.
- 1:50:17He turned to him and says, you still.
- 1:50:20Whatever, right? And I said just don't do it
- 1:50:23again next time. I'm sending you guys to the DNQ
- 1:50:26out of school. Damn right again.
- 1:50:29I'm not hard. I'm a hard ass, but you know.
- 1:50:31It it. It surprises me how people could
- 1:50:34be just so blatantly stupid. About some stuff you can't fix.
- 1:50:38Stupid man, people are stupid. They're like when they the.
- 1:50:41Stupid. You know how they say there's no
- 1:50:42such thing as a stupid question? There are stupid questions.
- 1:50:46I'm going to tell you the stupidest question I've ever
- 1:50:48heard. Can I use the book on a take
- 1:50:50home test? That's a real question, Connor.
- 1:50:56I'm like, all right, no. And he failed.
- 1:50:58The test. That's an honest to God true
- 1:51:00story. Another class I told.
- 1:51:02So you couldn't use the book for at home?
- 1:51:04No, you could. Oh, that's the whole point.
- 1:51:06He said no, that's why like take home.
- 1:51:08Test I told him no being a smart ass.
- 1:51:10Oh that's who I am. Anyway, he fails the test, so a
- 1:51:21couple classes. Later I'm there and I'm saying.
- 1:51:24OK, listen, they say there's no such thing as a stupid question.
- 1:51:27There are stupid questions. And the example I give is this
- 1:51:30right? But don't be afraid to ask.
- 1:51:32I'm not going to make fun of you asking.
- 1:51:33You know, this is obviously a stupid question.
- 1:51:35I'm sorry, if it's an obviously stupid question, you deserve to
- 1:51:39be called out for it. Yeah, so we're going through the
- 1:51:43syllabus and this one. Go raise their.
- 1:51:45Hand she was I. Have a question?
- 1:51:47Can we use the book on a take home test?
- 1:51:49Like the whole class was like what?
- 1:51:51Like it was, it was just funny. It was funny.
- 1:51:55I was like seriously? Do you remember the whole
- 1:51:58conversation I just had with you about 5 minutes ago?
- 1:52:01Yeah, just it's it's crazy. Anyway, technology can help you.
- 1:52:06Can it hurt you too? Let's take one quick final.
- 1:52:08Let's see. It is 1152.
- 1:52:12No, we're not. We're going to take the final
- 1:52:13break. We'll just go to the final.
- 1:52:22Know your worth. Show your work the final take
- 1:52:25from. Today's discussion is reading.
- 1:52:27The room isn't about blending in, it's about tuning in.
- 1:52:31Observe, adapt, and bring your best self to the table.
- 1:52:35The final flame has been struck. The lesson is locked in.
- 1:52:39Time to wrap the show up. All right, so real.
- 1:52:43Simply observe. Adapt and bring your best.
- 1:52:46Self to the table. The final flame has been struck.
- 1:52:50That's the end of the show. Done right, Because there's
- 1:52:52nothing else to say about that. See where you fit in.
- 1:52:58See where you fit in and figure it out.
- 1:53:02That's the hardest thing. You got to figure out a way to
- 1:53:05do it right. Read the room.
- 1:53:06That's been the title of the class.
- 1:53:08Reading the room. A cultural competence.
- 1:53:14OK, understanding that. You need to know what's going
- 1:53:18on. Around you, you need to know
- 1:53:19what's going on, how things work.
- 1:53:21You know, everyone has a different way of doing things.
- 1:53:24And like I myself, I'm different.
- 1:53:28I just do things differently. Yeah, I agree with that when I
- 1:53:35sit there. And I'm.
- 1:53:39Just, I don't know, in a new place I.
- 1:53:46Look around and I and I, you know, I'm a little quiet.
- 1:53:49Just to judge everything right and just to see what I can or
- 1:53:54cannot do. And if.
- 1:53:56I like it. I'm like, OK, cool.
- 1:53:59You know, if I don't like it, I'm like, what can I change or
- 1:54:01what can I do to like this better?
- 1:54:04And one of my favorite things is we got to eat right.
- 1:54:07OK. Do you think the food you eat is
- 1:54:14culture related? Well.
- 1:54:18Yeah, right. Every food's culture.
- 1:54:19Yeah, every food's culture. Exactly.
- 1:54:22When you go to certain restaurants and you.
- 1:54:23Try new food. Like we went to a new restaurant
- 1:54:25last weekend. Was it last weekend or two weeks
- 1:54:27ago? Maybe 2 weeks?
- 1:54:292 weeks? Wait, what's it called?
- 1:54:32We went to. A place that sells FA two weeks
- 1:54:35ago and I ordered the you ordered spring roll.
- 1:54:40I ordered all the egg rolls and spring rolls.
- 1:54:41I want to try them and one of them had egg in it and I'm just
- 1:54:46like, what? Well, it's a different type kind
- 1:54:49of. It's not Chinese food.
- 1:54:50It was a different kind of cuisine.
- 1:54:51Vietnamese. Yeah.
- 1:54:52So. Yeah.
- 1:54:54So they do it differently. It's.
- 1:54:55Big also. It wasn't bad.
- 1:54:59But it wasn't what you but it wasn't worth.
- 1:55:01Going back for me. And that's why I think it's so
- 1:55:04funny, right, that you're sitting there and you're like,
- 1:55:08OK, how does this, you know, like, I don't like this food.
- 1:55:12And I, I felt bad sending it back, but I'm like, I didn't
- 1:55:14like it. I didn't like it.
- 1:55:16It it was bland. It was like, I just, I didn't
- 1:55:19like it. So when you go out to eat, be
- 1:55:22aware of all that and understand that things happen.
- 1:55:25You know what I mean? Yeah.
- 1:55:27And cultures. All of that is so important.
- 1:55:30Because. Rest eating out is culture, you
- 1:55:35know, doing things a certain way.
- 1:55:36Like before COVID, at Texas Roadhouse and Logan's
- 1:55:39Steakhouse, they would give you a bucket of peanuts.
- 1:55:43Not even in a bag, it was just a bucket of peanuts.
- 1:55:45You'd get bucket. Peanuts at the front.
- 1:55:48And then you'd just throw the shells on the floor and people
- 1:55:52just throw stuff on the floor. OK.
- 1:55:56At the at night they'd go clean it up so the managers could see
- 1:56:00if the floor was clean or not. Makes sense, right?
- 1:56:04So it's it's. Interesting because as.
- 1:56:06You do that every culture, every restaurant.
- 1:56:09There's some restaurants that say you can't wear a tie in here
- 1:56:12and they'll cut your tie off without your permission.
- 1:56:16OK, They have a sign up front. That that says we're going to
- 1:56:19cut your. Tie off if you're walking over
- 1:56:20the tie and they hang your tie up on the wall.
- 1:56:23Wow, OK, there's some places the exact.
- 1:56:26Opposite, you must wear a tie to.
- 1:56:28Come in here. Or they just have the they just
- 1:56:31have ties on the wall. Yeah, they do.
- 1:56:33And here, like I have my jerseys, right?
- 1:56:36With my numbers on it, they can claim these are gang colors and
- 1:56:40I can't wear it. Yeah, that's happened to me.
- 1:56:44Yeah, happened to me also. You know.
- 1:56:46So for wearing black. Yeah, dressing up.
- 1:56:49Yeah, right. There's all those.
- 1:56:52Things that you got to be aware of.
- 1:56:53So just remember when you're going out, going to work with
- 1:56:56your friends, your friends are a different culture group than
- 1:57:00you. Yeah, but I'm getting.
- 1:57:03More. You're learning it, yeah.
- 1:57:05Right, but it's taking time. You can.
- 1:57:07Just walk in there and know everything.
- 1:57:10Oh yeah, right. So yeah, it's one of those
- 1:57:13things that think about it and be aware of it.
- 1:57:17And when you come back next week, we will talk about more
- 1:57:23college stuff and see how your first school goes.
- 1:57:27Can't wait to hear that. Until then, you guys, I am the
