- 0:15Welcome back to another episode of Rise and Thrive by Doctor J
- 0:19Nicole, where we are rising in faith and thriving in purpose.
- 0:23I'm your host, Doctor J Nicole, and today we're talking about
- 0:26something that explains so much about why dating feels the way
- 0:30that it does for so many people. So if you've ever said, why do I
- 0:34always like people who don't choose me, or why do I panic
- 0:37when someone pulls away? And finally, why do I feel bored
- 0:42with healthy people but obsessed with unavailable ones?
- 0:46This episode is for you. Today we're talking about
- 0:49attachment, not as labels, not as boxes, not as excuses for bad
- 0:55behaviors, but for insight. Because once you understand
- 1:00attachment, you stop personalizing behavior that was
- 1:03never about you, and you stop confusing chemistry with
- 1:07compatibility. So attachment helps answer the
- 1:13question, why do I react the way that I do in relationships?
- 1:19And the best part is that attachment is learned, and
- 1:22what's learned can be healed. OK, so let's break this down
- 1:27simply. Attachment refers to how we
- 1:31learn to connect with people emotionally, especially when it
- 1:35comes to closeness, safety, and trust.
- 1:38And this starts early in life, right through our caregivers,
- 1:43our family dynamics, whether there's consistency or lack of
- 1:46consistency, as well as emotional availability or
- 1:51absence. And those early lessons quietly
- 1:56follow us into adulthood and they especially show up in
- 1:59dating. OK, so there are 4 main
- 2:01attachment styles. You don't have to memorize them,
- 2:04just notice what resonates as I go through describing them.
- 2:07OK and remember, this is not for labeling, this is for insight.
- 2:12So secure attachment. Securely attached people are
- 2:16generally comfortable with closeness and independence.
- 2:19They communicate directly, they don't play games, they assume
- 2:23they are worthy of love, they don't panic when someone needs
- 2:27space, and they don't disappear when things get real.
- 2:32So secure does not mean perfect. It means that they're more
- 2:35regulated. They're more in touch with their
- 2:38feelings because they are secure and they're attachment.
- 2:43So then we have anxious attachment.
- 2:45Anxious attachment is driven by a fear of loss.
- 2:49So this could sound like, what if they stop liking me?
- 2:53Why haven't they text me back? That's one that gets people
- 2:55caught up all the time. Did I say too much that I do too
- 2:59much? Those types of questions are
- 3:01likely linked with a more anxious attachment style.
- 3:05And you might see individuals with anxious attachment style,
- 3:11they often engage in overthinking their
- 3:14communications with others, they're seeking reassurance,
- 3:20they stay longer than they should, and sometimes they can
- 3:24confuse anxiety with attraction. OK, now avoid an attachment.
- 3:32Avoid an attachment is driven by a fear of dependence avoidance.
- 3:38People with avoiding attachment styles, they often value their
- 3:42independence above all else. They might feel overwhelmed by
- 3:46the emotional needs of others. You could see them pull away
- 3:50when closeness starts to increase.
- 3:54They are prone to minimizing their feelings and you might
- 3:59hear them say things like, I just don't want anything serious
- 4:03right now. Now granted, that's something
- 4:05that could be said at any point, but a person that's avoidant and
- 4:09their attachment, you'll you'll see that more common.
- 4:13They really want connection, but they struggle with
- 4:16vulnerability. OK.
- 4:19And then finally we have disorganized attachment.
- 4:22Disorganized attachment is a mix of the anxious and avoidant
- 4:26attachment style patterns. OK, so this could show up as one
- 4:30in closeness, but then pushing it away as soon as it gets too
- 4:33close. Sometimes you can say they want
- 4:35closeness on their terms, but they don't want sometimes the
- 4:39responsibility. And This is why it can look like
- 4:42intense beginnings and then confusing endings because you
- 4:46don't know what happened, how you got there, right?
- 4:49There's the push pull dynamic that happens.
- 4:52And just think of this as somebody who they want to like,
- 4:56really know you. They're very interested and
- 4:58intrigued by you in the beginning.
- 5:00But then once it starts to feel real, they back up.
- 5:03So they're like, oh, come close, come, plus, oh, that's too
- 5:05close. So they're going to push you
- 5:07away just as things are getting good.
- 5:10And it can be confusing to you, but also with this attachment
- 5:14style, they fear real or perceived abandonment and
- 5:20rejection. So that's why you see them kind
- 5:24of pulled away. And unfortunately, with this
- 5:28attachment style, chaos can kind of feel familiar, right?
- 5:32Because remember, attachment is about the consistency or the
- 5:38lack thereof within it, as well as the emotional availability
- 5:44versus emotional absence. So then you have a person who
- 5:48you know is going to exhibit and flow back and forth between the
- 5:52anxious and then avoid it, OK? It doesn't mean that it because
- 5:58if you have anything other than secure attachment that it's a
- 6:01problem. It's not if that's just what
- 6:04you've been exposed to and there's an opportunity for you
- 6:08to make more conscious choices and decisions that lead to you
- 6:12having healthier love. And a couple more things about
- 6:17disorganized attachment. Really and truly with this
- 6:24attachment style is one of the most complicated, obviously,
- 6:26because it's between 2:00 attachment styles.
- 6:31And so just know that you're not flawed.
- 6:33There's nothing wrong with you as much as that you need to
- 6:36understand that this is a strategy that your nervous
- 6:39system has learned in order to survive and keep you safe,
- 6:43especially in intimate relationships, right?
- 6:46And survival strategies, they make sense until they start to
- 6:50cost you healthy love. So now let's talk about how
- 6:55attachment shows up in modern dating.
- 6:57Because let's be honest, dating today, it's sometimes going to
- 7:01add fuel to a or more insult to injury to an attachment wound,
- 7:07right? So anxious attachment and
- 7:09dating. This might look like the person
- 7:12is checking their phone repeatedly, reading into
- 7:15punctuation. Because remember, this is the
- 7:16overthinking that's taking place here.
- 7:20Feeling uneasy when the communication slows down,
- 7:24staying in relationships because something feels better than
- 7:27nothing. That's tough, right?
- 7:31And the anxious nervous system is basically saying if I lose
- 7:35connection, I lose safety. So if you feel that way, this is
- 7:41an indicator that you are currently operating with more of
- 7:44an attachment style that's anxious.
- 7:48So it looks like it's so they cling, right?
- 7:52And this is how they end up staying longer than what is
- 7:57healthy. So avoid an attachment style and
- 8:00dating. This looks like the hot and cold
- 8:02behaviour they're being. They'll be emotionally present
- 8:06and then they're they're distant right?
- 8:09Then they're pulling away after intimacy has occurred and they
- 8:16may feel overwhelmed when expectations arise, right?
- 8:20Because remember, they don't really want that emotional low.
- 8:22They don't want it heavy. They want the freedom to be able
- 8:25to, you know, pop out when it's uncomfortable for them.
- 8:30And so you, if you want to think about the nervous system of the
- 8:35person with avoiding attachment, their system is saying if I get
- 8:39too close, I lose myself. OK, so as a result of that,
- 8:43you're going to see them withdraw.
- 8:45And here's where things can get complicated.
- 8:48Anxious and avoiding attachment often attract each other.
- 8:53I'm going to breakdown. Why?
- 8:58Because anxiety chases, right? And avoidance retreats.
- 9:04So the cycle feels familiar so easily.
- 9:08You have the pursuer retreater pattern, the avoiding is going
- 9:12to move away and the anxious is going to follow or chase.
- 9:17So this is where I want to offer a reframe that's very important.
- 9:22Please understand that chemistry often feels familiar.
- 9:26OK? It feels familiar, and safety
- 9:30often feels calm. And calm can feel boring when
- 9:34chaos is what you've known, right?
- 9:37That sparked that excitement. Sometimes people are turned off
- 9:39when things seem too easy, when really it's healthy and it's not
- 9:45judgment. And we know that change starts
- 9:48with awareness. So if you're tired of the same
- 9:51outcomes that you've had, it might be time to do something
- 9:55new. And it's not uncommon for many
- 9:57people to mistake anxiety for passion because you feel it in
- 10:01your stomach. Your body sometimes is telling
- 10:04you this isn't it, this is unsafe.
- 10:06But it feels like excitement. And for some people, the unknown
- 10:12is exciting to them. The unpredictability is you're
- 10:17mistaking that for excitement in the emotional highs and lows.
- 10:22Those are mistaken for death, and real connection does not
- 10:28keep you on edge. Healthy love doesn't activate
- 10:32your nervous system, it soothes it.
- 10:35OK, so healing attachment does not mean that you'll, you'll
- 10:42never feel triggered again because I mean, we're human,
- 10:44right? Like, and we, we experience a
- 10:47lot of things, but it means that you'll respond differently when
- 10:53you are triggered. So healing attachment looks like
- 10:58pausing instead of chasing. So you might notice, OK, there's
- 11:03been a change in the frequency or the pattern of communication.
- 11:08Just wait, just wait. Like give his face.
- 11:12Sometimes people need room. And when you were in the early
- 11:16stages of dating, a person does not owe you anything.
- 11:20And I think a lot of times people get wrapped up in the
- 11:24newness, the excitement, right, which we can contribute to the
- 11:29dopamine, the oxytocin, all these feel good chemicals that
- 11:36are released in the body when we are meeting someone new.
- 11:39And so you want more of it. And then sometimes people aren't
- 11:42thinking, they're just feeling that going off the vibe, it
- 11:44feels good. The next thing they know, they
- 11:46might say, oh man, I've talked to them every day for X number
- 11:51of weeks or whatever, or months, or I've been seeing them
- 11:54regularly. I've been going on dates with
- 11:56them at least 2 * a month. Oh my gosh, what is this?
- 11:58So like people will start to think and so that that can lead
- 12:05to folks, you know, kind of pulling away, not recognizing
- 12:09their patterns, but and that fear, that fear can definitely
- 12:14kick in. So we want to make sure that we
- 12:21start to normalize a healthy relationship, right?
- 12:24Like that is not boring and this will look like noticing your
- 12:30urge before acting on it if you feel the need to withdraw or you
- 12:35would feel the need to chase right?
- 12:37Depending upon your attachment style.
- 12:39And it's so very important to communicate your needs instead
- 12:43of hints. It's very important to say what
- 12:46you mean and start doing so in the beginning and letting people
- 12:51know when you can do that without it being rejection.
- 12:56There's ways to say what you don't like and what you prefer.
- 13:00And if y'all are interested, we can do some episodes on like
- 13:06healthy communication and like communicating boundaries and
- 13:09things like that as well. It also means choosing
- 13:14consistency over intensity because that intensity, y'all,
- 13:18it feels good. This is why a lot of people are
- 13:21subject to love bombing because it has a certain intensity.
- 13:26You get the spikes, the dopamine, like those good
- 13:28chemicals that I've been talking about, right?
- 13:30Like that is what gives that good feeling.
- 13:35And so people get caught with that.
- 13:37But intensity is not enough enough alone and so healing,
- 13:44like our healthy attachment and relationship and dating.
- 13:48This means letting unfamiliar peace become your new normal.
- 13:54And This is why it feels like a threat.
- 13:55Because it's unfamiliar if you are used to chaos, or if you're
- 13:59used to having to chase, if you're used to pulling away.
- 14:05It does feel strange at first 'cause you know, those emotional
- 14:10roller coasters, if those are the norm, you're familiar with
- 14:14that, you know how to navigate that, and so you're learning to
- 14:17navigate quiet. And so this can make people feel
- 14:22like stability is weird, but quiet, it's not boring.
- 14:26Quiet is actually safe, y'all. And faith also reminds us that
- 14:32love is patient, love is kind. It's not confusing.
- 14:35It does not, you know, induce anxiety.
- 14:39Godly love does not require self abandonment.
- 14:43OK. So as we head into February, the
- 14:48month of love, I want to invite you again to deeper
- 14:53conversations. I want you to send in your
- 14:55letter, sending your questions, the patterns that you've
- 14:58experienced, patterns you exhibit confusion, hope, all of
- 15:02these things that you have. And so throughout the month of
- 15:05February, I'll be reading and responding to listener letters
- 15:08each episode that are about dating, relationships,
- 15:12boundaries. We're talking attachment and
- 15:14healing as well. We're not romanticize and
- 15:18dysfunction this year, y'all, OK?
- 15:19And we're not going to be excusing inconsistency.
- 15:23And we're not calling chaos chemistry.
- 15:26We're choosing healing. We're choosing healthy.
- 15:28So those submission details, you can find them in the description
- 15:34down below, but they could also be sent to
- 15:36info@evolvewithdoctorjanenicole.com. I really do want to hear from
- 15:41you. And as we enter into the month
- 15:44of love, I want you to remember that you are worthy of love that
- 15:49is safe, mutual, and consistent. Not a love that you have to
- 15:55chase, not a love that you have to interpret, but a love that
- 16:01keeps you calm and not anxious. Just love that meets you in
- 16:08peace and brings you peace. So I'll see you next week.
- 16:13Month of love is going to be full of things.
- 16:15We're going to have some different folks coming on
- 16:17talking about intimacy, talking about strategy, and being your
- 16:24best human relationships. We're going to go deeper into
- 16:28all those red flags and green flags and get some feedback from
