- 0:00Speaker 1: And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and
- 0:03Speaker 1: put forth his hand and took it, and slew a
- 0:06Speaker 1: thousand men therewith. Judges 15.15 Dear Heavenly Father, when others
- 0:14Speaker 1: wrong me and I feel betrayed, I will not take
- 0:18Speaker 1: matters into my own hands and act in revenge. Your
- 0:22Speaker 1: word reminds me that vengeance and vindication come from the Lord. Therefore,
- 0:29Speaker 1: I will not act rashly and carelessly like Samson, but
- 0:32Speaker 1: will instead wait for you to bring me deliverance and

- 0:42Speaker 1: with forgiveness gives me access to your presence and grace.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Whatever the enemy or others have stolen from me, I
- 0:52Speaker 1: will receive full payment in Jesus' name. I decree and declare,
- 0:58Speaker 1: that there will be no lack in the area that
- 1:00Speaker 1: was attacked by wicked schemes. Today is my day of
- 1:05Speaker 1: retribution and vindication. Today is the day that unforgiveness will
- 1:11Speaker 1: not have a hold on me or my future. I
- 1:16Speaker 1: speak a new chapter in my life from this day forward.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I am free from past hurts and betrayal. In Jesus' name. Amen.

- 1:56Speaker 2: In our last story, we learned about Samson's battle with
- 2:00Speaker 2: a lion, breaking of his vow, and a marriage to
- 2:03Speaker 2: a Philistine woman. His foolishness cost him greatly, and his
- 2:08Speaker 2: wife married another man. In this story, we will learn
- 2:12Speaker 2: about Samson's attempt to win his wife back, and his
- 2:15Speaker 2: revenge against the Philistines for her refusing him. Samson's strength
- 2:20Speaker 2: and craftiness would be used by God to create havoc
- 2:24Speaker 2: and chaos among the Philistines. inspired by the book of Judges.

- 3:21Speaker 3: That's jackgram.org, jackgram.org. In our last episode, we heard the
- 3:29Speaker 3: story of how Samson met and fell in love with
- 3:31Speaker 3: a Philistine woman. It was a relationship that God never
- 3:35Speaker 3: wanted for Samson, but one he would use nonetheless to
- 3:38Speaker 3: accomplish his eternal plans. We saw how Samson's foolishness and
- 3:44Speaker 3: the compromising of his values led to personal tragedy and
- 3:48Speaker 3: he lost his wife to another. Today we'll hear how
- 3:51Speaker 3: Samson fights to win back his wife and how he
- 3:54Speaker 3: reacts to being turned away. We'll also see how God
- 3:58Speaker 3: uses Samson's flaws and failures and all to defeat the
- 4:02Speaker 3: Philistines and sow chaos into their camp. We'll continue to
- 4:07Speaker 3: see that Samson is not only physically strong but clever
- 4:10Speaker 3: and crafty and how his extraordinary gifts are a tool
- 4:14Speaker 3: in the powerful hands of God. But we'll also see
- 4:18Speaker 3: the disastrous consequences of human vengeance and how one small
- 4:22Speaker 3: act can have a domino effect of death and destruction.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Let's listen now to today's reading.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Samson stood in regret. He missed his wife. More so,
- 4:35Speaker 2: he wanted to sleep with her again. So after some
- 4:39Speaker 2: time during the wheat harvest, Samson traveled back to the
- 4:42Speaker 2: Philistine city with a goat, attempting to buy back his
- 4:45Speaker 2: wife's favor. He went to her father and said, Allow
- 4:49Speaker 2: me to sleep with my wife again in her chamber.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Samson's request bothered her father. but he knew Samson was
- 4:57Speaker 2: a rich and strong man. He said to Samson, I
- 5:01Speaker 2: thought you hated my daughter for betraying you, so I
- 5:04Speaker 2: gave her as a wife to your best man. But here,
- 5:08Speaker 2: you may marry my youngest daughter instead. Samson simmered in anger.
- 5:13Speaker 2: He stormed off, amazed that his wife would be given
- 5:17Speaker 2: away to another man so quickly. His mind thrashed like
- 5:21Speaker 2: waves in a storm. His eyes glossed over in total rage.
- 5:25Speaker 2: and he immediately went into the wilderness. This time I
- 5:29Speaker 2: will be justified in my revenge against the Philistines, Samson
- 5:33Speaker 2: said to himself. Samson caught three hundred foxes in the
- 5:37Speaker 2: nearby forest, a task that took a great deal of
- 5:41Speaker 2: time and effort. But Samson did not mind. Revenge and
- 5:45Speaker 2: spite fueled his actions. He paired up the foxes and
- 5:50Speaker 2: tied their tails together with a torch between each of
- 5:53Speaker 2: He sent them into the wheat fields of the Philistines.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Samson stood at a distance, watching the food source of
- 6:00Speaker 2: the Philistines burn. There was nothing they could do to
- 6:04Speaker 2: stop the fire from raging. The Philistines discovered Samson was
- 6:09Speaker 2: responsible for the fire and killed his wife in retaliation. Samson,
- 6:15Speaker 2: now truly alone, went up against them. Dozens of Philistines
- 6:20Speaker 2: charged Samson, He growled at them like a lion and
- 6:24Speaker 2: did not run. He stood his ground like a one-man army.
- 6:29Speaker 2: It was a cruel and unsparing slaughter. Samson tore the
- 6:33Speaker 2: Philistines to shreds as he once did the lion in
- 6:36Speaker 2: the vineyard. He stood over their bodies, fists dripping with blood.
- 6:42Speaker 2: His long hair and beard was caked with dust and flesh.
- 6:46Speaker 2: He breathed a deep sigh and screamed into the air.
- 6:50Speaker 2: He was now a fugitive. So Samson escaped to a
- 6:53Speaker 2: cave in the cleft of Edom and hid there. The
- 6:57Speaker 2: Philistines were outraged and came up and camped in Judah.
- 7:01Speaker 2: They raided and pillaged the land, slaughtering innocent people out
- 7:05Speaker 2: of revenge. They scoured the entire city of Judah in
- 7:09Speaker 2: search of Samson. Three thousand men of Judah arose to
- 7:14Speaker 2: go find Samson hiding in the cave of Edom. When
- 7:18Speaker 2: they found him, they said to him, Don't you know
- 7:21Speaker 2: that the Philistines rule over us? Why have you done
- 7:24Speaker 2: this to us? Your foolish exploits have cost our lives.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Samson felt no regret. His pettiness and rage was still
- 7:33Speaker 2: looming over him like a dark cloud. They got what
- 7:37Speaker 2: they deserved, Samson hissed. I have only done to them
- 7:40Speaker 2: what they did to me. The leaders of Judah pressed
- 7:44Speaker 2: their hands against their temples. Samson was a difficult man
- 7:48Speaker 2: to speak with. He was filled with pride. Samson, we
- 7:52Speaker 2: have come here to bind you up and bring you
- 7:54Speaker 2: back to the Philistines. Samson closed his eyes. Three thousand
- 8:00Speaker 2: of his kin stood before him ready to take him
- 8:02Speaker 2: by force. No, they would not take him by force. Instead,
- 8:09Speaker 2: Samson had a plan. Promise me you will not attack
- 8:13Speaker 2: me yourselves, Samson said. Of course not. We will bind
- 8:18Speaker 2: you and give you to the Philistines, they replied. Excellent,
- 8:22Speaker 2: Samson nodded. So he gave himself over to be bound.
- 8:26Speaker 2: They tied him up tightly with two brand new ropes,
- 8:29Speaker 2: for they knew Samson was a strong man and capable
- 8:32Speaker 2: of breaking through weak knots and old rope. Samson walked
- 8:37Speaker 2: down the mountain with them. In the distance he could
- 8:40Speaker 2: hear the massive Philistine army shouting. They were coming up
- 8:44Speaker 2: to meet him. When they had finally met, Samson looked
- 8:47Speaker 2: to the sky. Like lightning falling from the clouds, a
- 8:51Speaker 2: rush of God's spirit came upon Samson. He tore the
- 8:55Speaker 2: ropes off his arms as if they were melted wax.
- 8:58Speaker 2: He stomped towards the Philistine horde. Besides, Samson was a
- 9:02Speaker 2: dead donkey, and he ripped out the donkey's jawbone from
- 9:05Speaker 2: its skull. The Philistines charged, and Samson jumped into the
- 9:10Speaker 2: crowd with loud screams. He flung their bodies like ragdolls.
- 9:15Speaker 2: One by one they fell as Samson drove the jawbone
- 9:19Speaker 2: into their skulls. Cracking bones and piercing screams echoed through
- 9:23Speaker 2: the canyon. Samson slew 1,000 Philistines that day. In that moment,
- 9:30Speaker 2: he was the acting fist of God, liberating the oppressed
- 9:34Speaker 2: people of Israel with each blow. The men's broken and
- 9:38Speaker 2: contorted bodies laced the mountain ground. Samson stood among the bodies.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Heaving and smiling, he shouted up to the skies and said,
- 9:48Speaker 2: With the jawbone of a donkey, I create heaps upon heaps.
- 9:53Speaker 2: With the jawbone of a donkey, I strike down a
- 9:56Speaker 2: thousand men. Samson's body quivered. out of exhaustion and dehydration
- 10:02Speaker 2: he threw away the jawbone into the bushes he called
- 10:06Speaker 2: upon the Lord and said you have given me salvation
- 10:10Speaker 2: now is it my fate to die in the wilderness
- 10:12Speaker 2: from thirst so God caused water to spill forth from
- 10:16Speaker 2: the crags of the mountainside Samson drank beside the bodies
- 10:20Speaker 2: of fallen Philistines. He revived his strength and washed away
- 10:25Speaker 2: the blood of his enemies. There was no doubt afterwards
- 10:28Speaker 2: that Samson was a chosen hero of God. So he
- 10:33Speaker 2: judged and protected Israel for 20 years. And he warred
- 10:37Speaker 2: against the Philistines in the name of the Lord.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Today's story begins with Samson determined to win back his wife.
- 10:48Speaker 3: He wanted to see her again, so he goes to
- 10:50Speaker 3: his father-in-law, intending to sleep with his wife. But his
- 10:55Speaker 3: wife's father tells Samson he's already given her to another man,
- 10:59Speaker 3: thinking Samson had rejected her after what happened at the feast.
- 11:03Speaker 3: He offers Samson her younger sister instead, but that is
- 11:06Speaker 3: not acceptable to Samson. Samson's anger boils and he vows revenge,
- 11:11Speaker 3: stating that this time he will be innocent of the
- 11:15Speaker 3: harm he'll do to the Philistines. So what does he do?
- 11:18Speaker 3: He goes out and catches 300 foxes, sets torches between them,
- 11:21Speaker 3: and releases them into the Philistines' crops. The Philistines watch
- 11:26Speaker 3: powerlessly as their three main food sources are destroyed. Samson's
- 11:31Speaker 3: anger is far from righteous. Yet God is working through
- 11:34Speaker 3: Samson to wreak havoc on those who have oppressed his
- 11:37Speaker 3: children for so long. When the Philistines discover it was Samson,
- 11:41Speaker 3: they burn his father-in-law's house down, killing all inside, including
- 11:45Speaker 3: Samson's wife. It's Samson's turn now to seek revenge. Filled
- 11:49Speaker 3: with rage, he vows to exact vengeance and then quit.
- 11:53Speaker 3: He foolishly thought that he could have the last word
- 11:56Speaker 3: and the Philistines would not seek to get even. Isn't
- 11:59Speaker 3: that how things go when we become so intoxicated and
- 12:03Speaker 3: motivated by anger and the desire to get even? In
- 12:07Speaker 3: the end, we're left with a trail of destruction and
- 12:10Speaker 3: nobody wins. Samson attacks the Philistines, tearing men limb from limb,
- 12:14Speaker 3: just like he had done to the lions. But this
- 12:17Speaker 3: wasn't a matter of self-defense. It was unbridled anger and rage.
- 12:23Speaker 3: It was sinful anger. Samson fled to a mountain near Judah,
- 12:27Speaker 3: so the Philistines pursued him, sowing more death and destruction.
- 12:31Speaker 3: The people of Judah came forward to help deliver Samson
- 12:33Speaker 3: to the Philistines. They gathered an army, but it's not
- 12:37Speaker 3: to fight the Philistines. Rather, it is to turn Samson
- 12:40Speaker 3: over to them. Judges 15.11 puts it this way, The
- 12:45Speaker 3: 3,000 men of Judah went down to the cleft of
- 12:47Speaker 3: the rock at Edom and said to Samson, Do you
- 12:50Speaker 3: not know that the Philistines are rulers over us? What
- 12:54Speaker 3: then is this that you have done to us? God
- 12:58Speaker 3: had appointed Samson as a deliverer of his people, but
- 13:01Speaker 3: they saw him as trouble rather than a blessing. Israel
- 13:05Speaker 3: would rather remain in subjugation than make waves. How often
- 13:10Speaker 3: do we give in to the things that hold us
- 13:12Speaker 3: captive rather than asking God's help and the power that
- 13:15Speaker 3: he will give us to overcome. Samson, finally sensing his calling,
- 13:19Speaker 3: tells the men of Judah they can bind him up
- 13:22Speaker 3: and hand him over. They tied him up with new
- 13:24Speaker 3: strong ropes that even Samson shouldn't be able to break
- 13:27Speaker 3: and delivered him to the Philistines. So God sent his
- 13:31Speaker 3: spirit upon Samson and filled him with an even greater power.
- 13:34Speaker 3: The ropes were no match for God's strength. This strength
- 13:38Speaker 3: was flowing through Samson now and he threw these ropes
- 13:41Speaker 3: off like they were nothing. He then picked up the
- 13:44Speaker 3: jawbone of a donkey and killed 1,000 Philistines. Now Samson
- 13:49Speaker 3: wasn't acting in his own interest for revenge. He now
- 13:52Speaker 3: is a tool in the hand of God to defeat
- 13:54Speaker 3: an enemy and strike fear into their hearts. This time
- 13:58Speaker 3: his heart is in the right place. He is obeying God.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Samson then led Israel for 20 years. But one day
- 14:05Speaker 3: his desires would creep back in and bring about his demise.
- 14:09Speaker 3: And we'll hear about that the next time. Let's pray.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Dear God, We pray that in our own lives that
- 14:16Speaker 3: we would overcome anger and rage and never give in
- 14:20Speaker 3: to our personal and selfish pursuits of getting even. Lord,
- 14:24Speaker 3: may we learn to forgive, but may we also learn
- 14:28Speaker 3: to do your will at all times and to walk
- 14:30Speaker 3: in obedience to you. May we live in the victory
- 14:33Speaker 3: that you have given us in Jesus Christ, and thank
- 14:36Speaker 3: you for the power of your Spirit who enables us
- 14:39Speaker 3: to do great things for you. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Thank you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
