Latest / Dr Justin Coulson's Happy Families / #540 Holiday Highlight - Steve Biddulph
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: It's the Happy Families podcast. It's the podcast for the
- 0:07Speaker 1: time poor parent who just once answers me now Gooday.
- 0:10Speaker 2: This is doctor Justin Coilson, the founder of Happy Families
- 0:13Speaker 2: dot com dot Au and the Six Kids. Normally I'm
- 0:17Speaker 2: here with Kylie, my wife, missus Happy Families as my
- 0:20Speaker 2: parenting podcast co host. But it's school holidays in Queensland.
- 0:25Speaker 2: I hope that you're having a great school holiday break
- 0:27Speaker 2: with your kids. Kylie and I will be back from
- 0:30Speaker 2: our holidays with a whole lot of new episodes of
- 0:33Speaker 2: the Happy Families podcast starting again on July the eleventh,
- 0:38Speaker 2: but for now, some highlights from recent Happy Families podcasts.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Steve Bitoff is a best selling author, and we talked
- 0:45Speaker 2: to him in episode three hundred and twenty four about
- 0:48Speaker 2: his book Fully Human and his idea of a super sense.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Steve explained what that is and how to tap into it.
- 0:55Speaker 1: We have our normal, everyday brain, but we have a
- 0:57Speaker 1: wider brain that's on the right side, which takes in
- 1:00Speaker 1: everything and it talks to us through our guts and
- 1:04Speaker 1: so everyone listening would know what I mean by a
- 1:07Speaker 1: gut feeling, but it's actually literally true. Just to or
- 1:12Speaker 1: Kylie if you go down inside your belly just right now,
- 1:15Speaker 1: as I'm talking to you, there'll be a bunch of
- 1:17Speaker 1: sensations going on down in the middle of your body,
- 1:21Speaker 1: and people listening the same thing, and it'll be something
- 1:24Speaker 1: about what I'm saying to you. Is it making sense?
- 1:27Speaker 1: Does it sound like a load of rubbish? Or should
- 1:30Speaker 1: I have gone to the toilet before I sat down
- 1:32Speaker 1: for the interview. It's like the wild part of you,
- 1:36Speaker 1: and it's always there, and it's always giving you a
- 1:40Speaker 1: kind of a reading on the situation. And I call
- 1:44Speaker 1: it super sense because it's very very alert and very
- 1:48Speaker 1: wise to what's going on, and it's just you just
- 1:53Speaker 1: go there by traveling down inside your body. And so
- 1:58Speaker 1: if one of your kids comes home from school and
- 2:01Speaker 1: says something and the tone of their voice isn't quite right,
- 2:04Speaker 1: or something about their expression is a little bit just
- 2:06Speaker 1: not quite right. If you're busy and you're thinking fast
- 2:10Speaker 1: and you're doing a lot of things, you won't register that,
- 2:15Speaker 1: but somewhere inside you will notice. And if you think
- 2:19Speaker 1: back to that conversation, somewhere deep down in your guard,
- 2:22Speaker 1: there'll be a kind of just a little twinge of ah,
- 2:25Speaker 1: something wasn't right there. And so what I'm encouraging people
- 2:30Speaker 1: to do is to listen to your supersense, go down
- 2:34Speaker 1: into your body, be aware of what's happening all the time,
- 2:39Speaker 1: because in a way, this is the real you. This
- 2:42Speaker 1: is where you live. You don't live in your thoughts,
- 2:44Speaker 1: you don't live in your emotions. There's a more peaceful place,
- 2:48Speaker 1: and your super sense is where you'll get your feeling
- 2:52Speaker 1: of steadiness from. And so a family is like a cyclone.
- 2:57Speaker 1: You know it's whirling around you. If you go into
- 3:00Speaker 1: your own body, you'll be in touch with you and
- 3:05Speaker 1: that kind of wild creature like a panther or a
- 3:07Speaker 1: big mama bear, that is steady and strong, and that'll
- 3:12Speaker 1: know if you're rushing too much. It'll know if you're
- 3:14Speaker 1: not breathing deeply enough. It'll know if you need to
- 3:16Speaker 1: go into your child's betterm and say what did you
- 3:19Speaker 1: mean by that? And the magical thing about it is
- 3:23Speaker 1: as you start to get in touch with your own
- 3:25Speaker 1: super sense, you will be more present and your children
- 3:29Speaker 1: will experience you as being there for them because we
- 3:34Speaker 1: all say, don't we you know we have to be
- 3:36Speaker 1: there for our children. Now. I used to be a
- 3:40Speaker 1: very anxious person. I am on the autism spectrum, and
- 3:44Speaker 1: I'm just naturally anxious. And sometimes my daughter would say, Dad,
- 3:48Speaker 1: where are you? You know, You're just not here, And
- 3:50Speaker 1: I'd look at her with, you know, with penetrating eyes
- 3:54Speaker 1: and work to try and be there and listen and think.
- 3:58Speaker 1: But it didn't do the trick because so I wasn't
- 4:00Speaker 1: inside myself. And now that I've learned to be to
- 4:04Speaker 1: use super sense and travel down to be like down
- 4:08Speaker 1: in my belly noticing my own sensations, then what happens
- 4:12Speaker 1: is I'm also more aware of my children.
- 4:15Speaker 2: That's Steve Biddoff from episode three hundred and twenty four
- 4:19Speaker 2: of the Happy Families podcast, talking about his book Fully Human.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Your daughter just walked by, eyes glued to her phone,
- 4:29Speaker 2: expression unreadable. You ask her to put it down, but
- 4:32Speaker 2: she balks. You know it's not good for her, but
- 4:35Speaker 2: you're not sure why or how to support better choices.
- 4:38Speaker 2: In the webinar pixel perfect, I joined with psychologist and
- 4:42Speaker 2: teen tech expert Jocelyn Brewer to discuss how to set
- 4:46Speaker 2: screen boundaries that work for you and your daughter. Check
