- 0:01Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, can I please have your attention.
- 0:06Speaker 2: This is a Patriots unfiltered emergency podcast. I eat all
- 0:10Speaker 2: of you to stop what you're doing.
- 0:12Speaker 3: And all right, folks, it's official. We're here with an
- 0:17Speaker 3: emergency podcast. We got to bout a littlettle cold. We
- 0:20Speaker 3: got Tamara, Evan, Paul and Paul on the last time
- 0:23Speaker 3: we did an emergency podcast, I feel like maybe it
- 0:25Speaker 3: was like COVID, like it's been a long it's been
- 0:28Speaker 3: a long time.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Like Cam Newton. I don't know. I thought the emergency
- 0:31Speaker 1: was you being under the weather.
- 0:32Speaker 3: That's that's it was an emergency. But I'm all right here,
- 0:36Speaker 3: you guys are here, and of course we're here to
- 0:38Speaker 3: talk about Jro Mayo, who was announced just recently by
- 0:41Speaker 3: the Patriots officially as gonna be the fifteenth head coach
- 0:44Speaker 3: of the Patriots. So big news, and I guess the
- 0:47Speaker 3: biggest part of it is just that there was a
- 0:49Speaker 3: succession plan built in and you know it's I mean,
- 0:52Speaker 3: obviously we're gonna get into all of that, and please
- 0:54Speaker 3: give us a call eight five five Pats five hundred,
- 0:56Speaker 3: shoot us an email, web radio at Patriots.
- 0:58Speaker 4: Dot com with your questions. But guys.
- 1:01Speaker 3: For me, it's just I think the interesting thing was
- 1:03Speaker 3: and reports coming out talking that this was put in
- 1:07Speaker 3: place and that maybe there was some tension with Bill
- 1:09Speaker 3: and Gerrod. I mean, I guess in retrospect, it makes
- 1:11Speaker 3: it sound like Bill Belichick was a little bit of
- 1:13Speaker 3: a lame duck this year. Maybe it wasn't supposed to
- 1:14Speaker 3: be this year, but just off the top, what are
- 1:17Speaker 3: what are your thoughts? I guess I joke with you, Paul,
- 1:19Speaker 3: You've been here the longest you've seen and this is
- 1:22Speaker 3: your I mean, what.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Know your likes? Termmind you how old you are? Whenever
- 1:26Speaker 2: he has.
- 1:26Speaker 1: As I mean, I think that that seemed to be
- 1:29Speaker 1: where everything was headed. I'm not overly surprised that there
- 1:34Speaker 1: was actually a clause in the contract according to NFL
- 1:37Speaker 1: Network that that sort of set this all up as
- 1:40Speaker 1: an official succession plan. And if you think back to
- 1:44Speaker 1: some of the things that were said in the off season,
- 1:46Speaker 1: I think Robert Kraft actually used the term air apparent
- 1:49Speaker 1: at one of his I want to say the owner's
- 1:52Speaker 1: meetings in Arizona, but one of his off season debriefings.
- 1:57Speaker 1: So yeah, I think that this is the plan, maybe
- 2:00Speaker 1: a little bit sooner, as you said, Mike, than they
- 2:02Speaker 1: wanted to. But this is the direction that the Patriots
- 2:05Speaker 1: were headed as far back as last year at this time.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I already published on Patriots dot com, so
- 2:12Speaker 2: you can read the actual quotes. But I think the
- 2:14Speaker 2: biggest thing for me is to stress that this is
- 2:17Speaker 2: not simply Bill two point zero. Like Girodmeyo is a
- 2:21Speaker 2: very very different type of coach than Bill. He was
- 2:26Speaker 2: described to me by multiple players as a player's coach
- 2:31Speaker 2: several times, like and not prompted or anything like that
- 2:34Speaker 2: by other people. This is somebody that obviously played following
- 2:38Speaker 2: that model that's been successful around the league, and I
- 2:42Speaker 2: would say is a total opposite personality wise of what
- 2:46Speaker 2: they had with Bill Belichick. So in some ways I am,
- 2:50Speaker 2: and we'll talk about it like the concerns are legitimate
- 2:54Speaker 2: about I think kind of like what Paul has brought
- 2:57Speaker 2: up a lot, is this going to change how they
- 2:59Speaker 2: philosophically try to win football games? And I think that's
- 3:02Speaker 2: the biggest question that Jirod's going to have to answer,
- 3:05Speaker 2: is are you trying to win three to nothing or
- 3:07Speaker 2: are you willing to have an offense that is able
- 3:11Speaker 2: to win games, But in terms of him as a
- 3:14Speaker 2: coach and him as a person, a much much different
- 3:17Speaker 2: personality than what the Patriots had with Bill Belichick. If
- 3:20Speaker 2: you look at Bill Belichick as like a disciplinarian type
- 3:23Speaker 2: of head coach, I would look at girod Meyo as
- 3:25Speaker 2: a player's coach. So they've completely changed gears in terms
- 3:28Speaker 2: of that style.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Yeah, what do you think, Tomara?
- 3:31Speaker 5: I personally love it. I think that it's going to
- 3:34Speaker 5: bring like a fresh look to the team personally, and
- 3:37Speaker 5: for me being from his hometown and just seeing my
- 3:40Speaker 5: entire city like light up with this news. I'm excited
- 3:43Speaker 5: to actually go home for my mom's birthday so I
- 3:45Speaker 5: can get the newspaper and see what it says, cause
- 3:47Speaker 5: I'm sure he's going to be on the front.
- 3:48Speaker 2: But just seeing the.
- 3:50Speaker 5: Players excitement today of the news, just how excited they
- 3:54Speaker 5: were all over social media, Like you even have free
- 3:56Speaker 5: agents that are allegedly excited to come back because of
- 3:59Speaker 5: that news. I think that says a lot about who
- 4:01Speaker 5: he is as a person. Like Evan said, and I
- 4:03Speaker 5: think just through numerous press conferences with him and with
- 4:06Speaker 5: guys talking about him, I think they are fully support him.
- 4:10Speaker 5: And I think that if they set the table appropriately
- 4:13Speaker 5: for girod Mail, he can have a great, hopeful first year.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Yeah, that's I mean, I think guess that's the question
- 4:18Speaker 3: now is who sticks around from the staff? You know,
- 4:21Speaker 3: is there a GM higher do they begin interviews? I
- 4:24Speaker 3: know Ian Rappaport put out you know, a list of
- 4:27Speaker 3: potential GM candidates. Adam Peters I think just signed with
- 4:30Speaker 3: the commanders. He was one. And now it's really just
- 4:33Speaker 3: you know, I mean, for me, I love job Mayo,
- 4:36Speaker 3: we have you know, a little bit of a relationship
- 4:37Speaker 3: with him. I'm not blown away right now, like I
- 4:40Speaker 3: kind of want to see what happens on the offensive
- 4:42Speaker 3: side of the ball. To your point, I mean even
- 4:43Speaker 3: more than like what's his philosophy? What kind of guys
- 4:46Speaker 3: is he going to surround them with? And I mean,
- 4:47Speaker 3: I guess the positive for me is that the defense
- 4:49Speaker 3: is going to kind of stay intact the way that
- 4:51Speaker 3: they run the defense. But I have real questions still
- 4:54Speaker 3: about is what are they going to do with the
- 4:56Speaker 3: GM position and how are they going to staff the
- 4:58Speaker 3: offensive his team? Are they going to keep it kind
- 5:00Speaker 3: of the same. Are they going to allow Billy Oh
- 5:03Speaker 3: another year to maybe hire some different staff, and I
- 5:07Speaker 3: just at this point, I'm just wondering how much are
- 5:08Speaker 3: they going to run it back with what they've kind
- 5:10Speaker 3: of had. And I think, Paul, you made the point
- 5:12Speaker 3: early in this process.
- 5:14Speaker 1: If you're just.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Getting rid of Bill and you're bringing everybody else back,
- 5:16Speaker 3: isn't that you're just kind of.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Taking on too Billays? Just keep Bill so you.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Know, Like again, I come from a place of excitement
- 5:23Speaker 3: that the defense stays intact. I like jabmeyo, we all
- 5:25Speaker 3: have a relationship established with him. But is this going
- 5:28Speaker 3: to make the Patriots better and be able to get
- 5:30Speaker 3: back to a level I still feel.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Kind of like, I don't know.
- 5:33Speaker 5: I personally do not feel like it's going to be
- 5:35Speaker 5: ran back at all. Like I feel like just from
- 5:37Speaker 5: listening to Robert Kraft yesterday and talking about how he
- 5:39Speaker 5: even from like the fans to even the way he
- 5:42Speaker 5: feels about losing the way they've been playing the last
- 5:44Speaker 5: three years, like not acceptable. So I think just to
- 5:48Speaker 5: change the person who's in charge but keep everything the same,
- 5:50Speaker 5: I think that would be really stupid. And I don't
- 5:54Speaker 5: see mister Kraff as a stupid guy, And so I
- 5:56Speaker 5: fully see the whole offensive side being completely blown out
- 5:59Speaker 5: and made Now.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I also just think with the Bill thing, and
- 6:04Speaker 2: you know, yesterday talking to people and stuff like that,
- 6:06Speaker 2: like they the timelines didn't match up with Bill Belichick anymore.
- 6:10Speaker 2: You know, this is a seventy one going on, a
- 6:12Speaker 2: seventy two year old man, and the Patriots are going
- 6:15Speaker 2: into a full scale rebuilt, especially on the offensive side
- 6:18Speaker 2: of the ball. They're gonna have a young quarterback, a
- 6:20Speaker 2: new quarterback most likely, They're gonna have a lot of
- 6:23Speaker 2: different personnel on the offensive side of the ball. And
- 6:25Speaker 2: I think that for Bill, he was looking for probably
- 6:30Speaker 2: two three years, maybe go after Shula, compete in the
- 6:34Speaker 2: short term. And I think for the Crafts and for
- 6:37Speaker 2: the Patriots, they were looking at it as more of, well,
- 6:40Speaker 2: we're trying to build a sustained winner. I think in
- 6:43Speaker 2: twenty one they threw a lot of money at the problem.
- 6:45Speaker 2: They drafted a quarterback in the first round, and they
- 6:48Speaker 2: went for the instant gratification and it worked to an extent.
- 6:51Speaker 2: But then obviously we saw what's happened since. So I
- 6:54Speaker 2: think in a lot of ways, you know, why not
- 6:56Speaker 2: just keep Bill. I think the big reason is that
- 6:59Speaker 2: they are looking at this as more of a long
- 7:01Speaker 2: term play where we're looking at Mayo being here through
- 7:06Speaker 2: an entire rebuild, but not like in twenty one, like
- 7:09Speaker 2: an actual rebuild, and it could be a couple of
- 7:11Speaker 2: years until the Patriots are truly championship caliber. And if
- 7:15Speaker 2: you're Bill Belichick, you build the Patriots back up. Let's
- 7:18Speaker 2: say he hits and everything goes all sunshines and rainbows
- 7:21Speaker 2: in the offseason. You hit on a quarterback, Realistically, you're
- 7:26Speaker 2: probably not a championship caliber team until Bill's seventy four,
- 7:30Speaker 2: seventy five years old, and then it's kind of like, okay,
- 7:33Speaker 2: well then what now he's gonna leave and everything, So
- 7:35Speaker 2: I retire at that point. So I think that that's
- 7:38Speaker 2: a big reason why. And in terms of the staff,
- 7:40Speaker 2: I think the one person that could stay from the
- 7:44Speaker 2: front office is Elliot Wolf. I think there's a really
- 7:47Speaker 2: good chance that he's the next general manager of the Patriots.
- 7:49Speaker 2: And I know a lot of people are gonna sit
- 7:51Speaker 2: there and say, well, that's not change, but I think
- 7:55Speaker 2: Elliot Wolf is somebody that has been outside the organization.
- 7:59Speaker 2: This is not somebody that I grew up in Bill
- 8:01Speaker 2: Belichick's shadow and did everything with you know, the Belichick
- 8:05Speaker 2: way for the last twenty years, like a macro or
- 8:07Speaker 2: something like that. He has had other jobs, other stints
- 8:10Speaker 2: in the league before he came here, and I think
- 8:13Speaker 2: he was doing a lot of the especially on the
- 8:15Speaker 2: pro personnel side of things, a lot of the general
- 8:18Speaker 2: manager type stuff over the last couple of years. Anyways,
- 8:22Speaker 2: since Dave Ziegler left.
- 8:23Speaker 3: My question would just be, though, if it is Elliot Wolf,
- 8:25Speaker 3: is you know, we'll get a look at how much
- 8:27Speaker 3: is this like Bill overriding his scouting department? And you
- 8:30Speaker 3: know that was part of the Breer story yesterday where
- 8:32Speaker 3: he kind of brought up aj Brown and Teebo Samuel
- 8:34Speaker 3: being a little bit too loosey goosey on their trip
- 8:36Speaker 3: for Bill's liking. They ended up with Nikhil Harry. You know,
- 8:40Speaker 3: we just we've talked about it in the show recently.
- 8:42Speaker 3: You don't know exactly how you divide it all up
- 8:44Speaker 3: of you know, was Elliot Wolf coming up with great
- 8:47Speaker 3: picks from the last couple drafts and he was overridden
- 8:49Speaker 3: by Bill? Or are these Elliot Wolf's guys already that
- 8:51Speaker 3: we've been seeing in the last gume.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I do always love those thing and this is probably
- 8:54Speaker 1: better for our regular weekly shows on PU. But I
- 8:57Speaker 1: do love those stories about you know, the sources that
- 9:01Speaker 1: tell you about you know, this is the guy we wanted,
- 9:04Speaker 1: but this is the guy that Bill died. You know,
- 9:06Speaker 1: always after the fact, it's never about the you know,
- 9:09Speaker 1: the anonymous scout who tells you, you know, the guy I
- 9:11Speaker 1: really wanted was Nikhil Harry, but you know, unfortunately the
- 9:15Speaker 1: Patriots took him instead. I never got to pick him.
- 9:18Speaker 1: You know. It's always oh yeah, you know, Deebo, Samuel
- 9:20Speaker 1: and A. J. Brown, those are the guys, you know.
- 9:22Speaker 1: I just find it interesting they were too loosey goosey
- 9:25Speaker 1: in their visit. But yet Rob Gronkowski famously fell asleep
- 9:28Speaker 1: during his and they and they, you know, they they
- 9:31Speaker 1: drafted him. So, like I said, I think there's a
- 9:34Speaker 1: lot of truth to those stories. I'm not telling you
- 9:36Speaker 1: that I don't believe that the story. I just think
- 9:38Speaker 1: sometimes you have to try to identify where the quotes
- 9:43Speaker 1: are coming from, in the angles that they're coming from.
- 9:46Speaker 1: The bottom line is the burd Brear story. I don't know.
- 9:49Speaker 1: If you guys read Mike Reese's piece about Reese's pieces,
- 9:51Speaker 1: you see what I did about the you know, the
- 9:54Speaker 1: whole dysfunction. Dysfunction is the word, and to me, that's
- 9:58Speaker 1: why I think you said to kind of set up
- 10:00Speaker 1: like a lame duck year for Bill Or was that Mike?
- 10:04Speaker 1: Is that you sorry? I think Mike's piece sort of
- 10:08Speaker 1: indicated that you know that this was a year early.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I think that they probably wanted to make this transition
- 10:13Speaker 1: after the twenty four season, not before, But you go
- 10:17Speaker 1: four to thirteen and it gets accelerated.
- 10:20Speaker 5: Yeah, four and thirteen plus, Like the locker room, and
- 10:23Speaker 5: as much as you everyone tries to say like, oh,
- 10:25Speaker 5: we're in it together, we're fighting for each other, it's
- 10:28Speaker 5: like you saw the way the locker room was and
- 10:31Speaker 5: it was truly falling apart. Look at the quarterback room
- 10:33Speaker 5: between what happened with Mac and Zappy, It's like you
- 10:36Speaker 5: really could not let that happen for another year with
- 10:38Speaker 5: a brand new quarterback, with a weird quarterback room where
- 10:40Speaker 5: everyone's kind of just preparing by themselves, even though they're
- 10:43Speaker 5: telling us at the podium. Otherwise, there's just all the
- 10:46Speaker 5: reports I feel like all season long have just pointed
- 10:49Speaker 5: that it was time to end things.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Yeah. To me, now, I like Gerrod I feel like
- 10:55Speaker 2: has a lot of things going for him that are positive.
- 10:57Speaker 2: I think the players really like him. I think that
- 11:00Speaker 2: he's got a good football mind. I think that the
- 11:02Speaker 2: defensive side of the ball shows innovation, shows you know,
- 11:06Speaker 2: being modernized, things like that by Girod Mayo. It's really
- 11:09Speaker 2: now a question of who is around Girod Mayo. You know,
- 11:12Speaker 2: what do they surround him with. Who's the general manager,
- 11:16Speaker 2: who's the offensive coordinator. I think the offensive coordinator higher
- 11:19Speaker 2: is absolutely massive because not only is that not his
- 11:23Speaker 2: side of the ball, but it's also a lot of
- 11:26Speaker 2: responsibility that he's going to be taking on that he
- 11:28Speaker 2: hasn't taken on before. So to have, you know, if
- 11:32Speaker 2: it's not Bill O'Brien, but have somebody maybe with head
- 11:34Speaker 2: coaching experience as an offensive coordinator or a real coordinator
- 11:38Speaker 2: experience for a long period of time that can basically
- 11:41Speaker 2: just run that side of the ball in year one,
- 11:43Speaker 2: because I think if you're asking Girod Mayo to be
- 11:45Speaker 2: Bill Belichick, who has his hands in everything and is
- 11:48Speaker 2: all over the place, then it's unrealistic for such a
- 11:51Speaker 2: young coach. So I look back at some of the
- 11:53Speaker 2: recent models, you know, like Sean McVeigh for instance, early
- 11:57Speaker 2: on with the Rams. When the Patriots played the Super
- 11:59Speaker 2: Bowl against the Rams in nineteen eighteen season, Wade Phillips
- 12:04Speaker 2: was his defensive coordinator. You couldn't have a more experienced
- 12:07Speaker 2: defensive coordinator than Wade Phillips. So they had the youngest
- 12:10Speaker 2: coach in the history of the NFL with one of
- 12:13Speaker 2: the oldest defensive coordinators in the NFL.
- 12:15Speaker 1: In Miami right now. Yeah, yeah, McDaniel and Fanji.
- 12:18Speaker 2: And Fangio, right, and so you pair the guy with
- 12:21Speaker 2: somebody that has the ability to just be the head
- 12:25Speaker 2: coach of his side of the ball and you don't
- 12:27Speaker 2: have to put all that stress on Mayo shoulders. It'd
- 12:30Speaker 2: be interesting to see because that Bill O'Brien does fit
- 12:32Speaker 2: that resume, right, you know, former head coach, you know,
- 12:35Speaker 2: been an offensive coordinator a million times. So maybe it
- 12:38Speaker 2: is him. If it's not, I'm gonna be fascinated to
- 12:40Speaker 2: see what who Durrod picks because it's it's a big
- 12:44Speaker 2: responsibility to fix that side of the ball.
- 12:46Speaker 5: Josh also does fit the in a way.
- 12:48Speaker 2: But Josh McDaniels, he's going with Bill, Yeah, I think
- 12:52Speaker 2: so to that's done.
- 12:54Speaker 1: We got to buy Evans tight pants make him the
- 12:57Speaker 1: next time.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I definitely have that experience and that's what
- 13:02Speaker 2: they need. But you look at the coordinator, you look
- 13:05Speaker 2: at wide receivers coach, you look at offensive line coach.
- 13:08Speaker 2: I think those three spots are definitely spots that could
- 13:11Speaker 2: have different coaches here next year under Gerard. And that's
- 13:14Speaker 2: going to be tough for draw with Troy Brown. I mean, like,
- 13:17Speaker 2: that's a guy, you know. I don't think they overlapped
- 13:20Speaker 2: playing right. I think Troy Brown was already retired at
- 13:22Speaker 2: that point, but maybe maybe yeah, probably yeah, I'd have
- 13:28Speaker 2: to look that up, but that'd be that's that's a
- 13:31Speaker 2: that's a position that we've all had on our crosshairs
- 13:33Speaker 2: in terms of development on field execution things like that.
- 13:37Speaker 2: And there's been a lot of reporting about, uh, the
- 13:39Speaker 2: wide receiver room and Troy Brown and Ross Douglas not
- 13:42Speaker 2: exactly getting the job done.
- 13:44Speaker 5: So I really hope that whoever the OC is gets
- 13:47Speaker 5: to hire whoever they want so that you know, they
- 13:49Speaker 5: have a staff working for them that they trust, versus
- 13:51Speaker 5: like the articles that came out about Bill O'Brien not
- 13:54Speaker 5: being able to hire the staff he wanted to and
- 13:55Speaker 5: therefore having huge unit meetings versus more individual meetings.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I think.
- 14:00Speaker 3: I mean, now the question is who's staying, who's going.
- 14:02Speaker 3: I mean to assume that the step and Brian probably
- 14:04Speaker 3: would would go with Bill would.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think it's interesting. And Evan has
- 14:08Speaker 1: been talking about this, you know, the last couple of weeks,
- 14:10Speaker 1: and I agree you because we all see the relationship
- 14:13Speaker 1: between girod Mayo and Steve Balichick is seems to be
- 14:16Speaker 1: pretty solid. So I don't completely dismiss it. I know
- 14:19Speaker 1: everybody else you know, it's it's a nonstarter. Those guys
- 14:22Speaker 1: have to go. They're gonna go with their father. That's
- 14:24Speaker 1: probably what's going to happen. But I don't dismiss it
- 14:27Speaker 1: as a possibility.
- 14:28Speaker 2: I would also look at Steve and say, like, if
- 14:30Speaker 2: he is on the mind that he wants to be
- 14:32Speaker 2: a head coach someday, then calling plays here with Gerrod
- 14:37Speaker 2: and doing it without his father is probably a better
- 14:39Speaker 2: way to map out a resume to potentially be a
- 14:42Speaker 2: head coach down the line. You know, that's like Kyle Shanahan,
- 14:45Speaker 2: you know, didn't coach for his father until Washington and
- 14:49Speaker 2: it was able to you know, make his own way
- 14:51Speaker 2: in the world type of thing, So I wonder if
- 14:54Speaker 2: that would be a factor. And then DeMarcus Covington's obviously
- 14:57Speaker 2: a name that we're gonna hear a lot that people
- 14:59Speaker 2: are going to want want to retain.
- 15:01Speaker 3: We got a couple of calls, a couple bunch of
- 15:02Speaker 3: emails coming in before we get to those, though, just
- 15:04Speaker 3: one more question I have for you guys, and that's
- 15:06Speaker 3: you know, probably the biggest thing about JIROB. Mayo is
- 15:08Speaker 3: just that he's basically been an inside linebackers coach if
- 15:10Speaker 3: you want to go by what the title is. We
- 15:12Speaker 3: know he's more than that, but just generally, what are
- 15:14Speaker 3: your thoughts on how big of a job this is
- 15:17Speaker 3: for JIROB. Mayo given his experience. I know he you know,
- 15:19Speaker 3: spent a year or two and you know, working like
- 15:22Speaker 3: in investments like that like him, you know, I don't
- 15:24Speaker 3: know like people trumpet that like, well, he can't do anything.
- 15:27Speaker 4: You're in corporate as a leader, he can do it all.
- 15:30Speaker 3: But how realistic and how concerning is that of you know, JIROB.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Mayo now having to basically re establish the program. I'm
- 15:36Speaker 3: sure he'll take some of Bill Belichick's stuff. I'm sure
- 15:38Speaker 3: he'll not take some of his stuff, but that's idea
- 15:41Speaker 3: organizing the whole thing.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Yeah, ideally that's what you get. You'd get him taking
- 15:44Speaker 1: some of the things from Bill that you know, sort
- 15:47Speaker 1: of evergreen that are going to work no matter what,
- 15:49Speaker 1: in integrating that with maybe a younger mindset. I know
- 15:53Speaker 1: he had that quote about you know, when he was
- 15:56Speaker 1: growing going through it, it was what the coach said.
- 15:58Speaker 1: And nowadays the play are a little bit more about
- 16:01Speaker 1: the why and all that kind of thing. So if
- 16:03Speaker 1: he could be a mesh of those two things, I
- 16:06Speaker 1: think ideally that's what you're looking for.
- 16:08Speaker 2: They hear that a lot, you know, modern Bill, right,
- 16:10Speaker 2: Like a lot of people call him like Girod Belichick
- 16:13Speaker 2: or Mini BB in his playing days, but like now
- 16:17Speaker 2: it's I think it's more of a modern version. And
- 16:20Speaker 2: when he talked to you know, and talk to some
- 16:21Speaker 2: of the players about it, you know, they were comparing
- 16:24Speaker 2: him to a Demiico Ryans, a Mike McDaniel, a Antonio
- 16:28Speaker 2: Pierce in Vegas, the interim coach with the Raiders, like
- 16:31Speaker 2: those guys that either played or a younger or you know,
- 16:35Speaker 2: can relate more to the players nowadays. And I think
- 16:38Speaker 2: the one name that I heard a lot with girod
- 16:41Speaker 2: It was Demiko Ryans. And Demiko Ryans and him have
- 16:44Speaker 2: a very similar resume coming up to this point. Both
- 16:47Speaker 2: of them went right into coaching pretty much after playing
- 16:51Speaker 2: and didn't have a lot of experience when they got
- 16:53Speaker 2: the job. Demiko Ryans was with the Niners for six
- 16:57Speaker 2: years before he took the job. Drod's been here for five,
- 17:00Speaker 2: so very similar pass to this point, and you can
- 17:04Speaker 2: see how well it's working in Houston right now.
- 17:06Speaker 3: So well, let's jump over to the phones. Thank you
- 17:09Speaker 3: for people who are calling in here on Emergency Podcast Friday.
- 17:12Speaker 4: We'll go first, Dillan down in Orlando.
- 17:14Speaker 6: Hey, Dylan, Hey, Happy Friday.
- 17:16Speaker 5: Guys, Thank you, Happy Friday.
- 17:18Speaker 7: Two questions, and I'll preface by saying I think I'm
- 17:22Speaker 7: a I'm a fan of the decision. I'm excited to
- 17:25Speaker 7: see what happens. Admittedly, I'm kind of concerned that the
- 17:29Speaker 7: pat didn't really do any due diligence on any of
- 17:33Speaker 7: the other candidates. I'm curious to know if you guys
- 17:36Speaker 7: think that the Patriots kind of trapped themselves into this
- 17:40Speaker 7: move contractually with Jirad Mayo's contract. Obviously you think back
- 17:45Speaker 7: to like a Josh McDaniels, who was supposed to be
- 17:48Speaker 7: the successor, and if Belichick had kind of kicked the
- 17:50Speaker 7: can a little bit earlier, we may have seen him
- 17:53Speaker 7: in his position. So I'm curious on your thoughts about that.
- 17:56Speaker 7: And then I'm also curious to know if you think that,
- 18:00Speaker 7: given that Dron Mayo is a defensive player, defensive coach,
- 18:04Speaker 7: kind of a prodigy of Belichick, if Patriots fans should
- 18:07Speaker 7: temper their expectations on the offensive side of the ball.
- 18:11Speaker 3: Iks still appreciate it. Let's uh, let's jump in on that.
- 18:14Speaker 3: I mean, look, I gotta admit I kind of sold
- 18:15Speaker 3: myself on the idea of like Rabel over the last week,
- 18:17Speaker 3: and I was excited about it, And you know, I'm
- 18:20Speaker 3: not quite as excited about Girotti. I love, you know,
- 18:23Speaker 3: I loved Gerard, I mean personally, but just in terms
- 18:25Speaker 3: of the experience factor, and you know what, we know,
- 18:27Speaker 3: it just feels like there's a lot of unknowns, which
- 18:29Speaker 3: can be a good thing in about think Paul, which
- 18:30Speaker 3: as the.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Second part about the offense I think we just all
- 18:34Speaker 1: talked about remains to be seen. We'll see how the
- 18:36Speaker 1: structure of that coaching staff winds up being and what
- 18:40Speaker 1: to expect. I do think the contract, the way they
- 18:43Speaker 1: set it up, did box them in a little bit.
- 18:46Speaker 1: And and I'm not saying that I think it's the
- 18:48Speaker 1: wrong guy, the wrong choice. What I think you could
- 18:52Speaker 1: very well have landed on girod Mayo the same way.
- 18:55Speaker 1: I think that you do yourself a disservice by not
- 18:59Speaker 1: seeking more information. And I would have loved to have
- 19:03Speaker 1: brought in and I know I'm joking around all the time.
- 19:06Speaker 1: I would have loved to have brought in one of
- 19:07Speaker 1: these young, tight pant wearing offensive minds just to here,
- 19:12Speaker 1: just to appease me. Yeah, just to hear how they
- 19:14Speaker 1: talk about the game. Yeah, you know, what harm would
- 19:18Speaker 1: it have been to have Ben Johnson to Bobby Slowick
- 19:21Speaker 1: in for an interview, or Eric b Enemy in for
- 19:23Speaker 1: an interview. Just get around the league a different you know,
- 19:27Speaker 1: you know, not to have all of them, you know,
- 19:29Speaker 1: pick one or two, you know, get just to get
- 19:31Speaker 1: a different perspective as to how the game is being
- 19:33Speaker 1: played in other NFL places right now. And I think
- 19:37Speaker 1: the fact that it was done so quickly, I think
- 19:40Speaker 1: they were kind of boxed in by that contract.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Either they're boxed in by the contract or they wanted
- 19:46Speaker 2: to show conviction, because I think if you go ahead
- 19:48Speaker 2: and you start interviewing people and then you settle back
- 19:51Speaker 2: on Girad, it kind of feels like you weren't really sold.
- 19:56Speaker 1: And that was something that I think Florio wrote about
- 20:00Speaker 1: earlier on Friday, and I just I don't get that,
- 20:05Speaker 1: like you didn't want it hanging over the weekend with
- 20:07Speaker 1: the playoff games of people speculating are they going to
- 20:10Speaker 1: go to Vrabel? Are they going to do this? I
- 20:11Speaker 1: think if you have an idea, you know, again, contractually,
- 20:16Speaker 1: you kind of had to do this or break the
- 20:19Speaker 1: contract in some way. I would have liked to have
- 20:22Speaker 1: had them be a little bit more open minded to it.
- 20:24Speaker 1: I guess what I'm questioning is not the idea that
- 20:28Speaker 1: girod Mayo is the coach, because I think we all
- 20:29Speaker 1: think there's certainly a lot of potential as girod Mayo
- 20:33Speaker 1: was the coach. My question is going back to whenever
- 20:35Speaker 1: they decided to do this, what made them so sure
- 20:38Speaker 1: that that was the best way to do it? Why
- 20:40Speaker 1: is that the best way to succeed Belichick without being
- 20:43Speaker 1: able to really talk to anybody.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it's totally fair point. And I think that's
- 20:47Speaker 2: why the next hires are almost more interesting because if
- 20:52Speaker 2: they hired they're not going to hire what, you know,
- 20:54Speaker 2: Ben Johnson or Bobby Slowek to be offensive coordinator because
- 20:57Speaker 2: they're gonna that's a lateral move for those guys. But
- 21:00Speaker 2: if they hire one of your tight pant guys to
- 21:02Speaker 2: come in and uh and coordinate the offense, that's maybe
- 21:05Speaker 2: you know, on Miami's staff, on San Francisco's staff, you know,
- 21:09Speaker 2: something like that, Then maybe they are trying to think
- 21:12Speaker 2: a little They are trying to bring something a little
- 21:14Speaker 2: bit different on that side of the ball. So who
- 21:16Speaker 2: the coordinator higher is what system he runs? Like if
- 21:20Speaker 2: it's just Josh McDaniels or Bill O'Brien, then I'm gonna
- 21:23Speaker 2: be a little bit concerned. Like, so we really didn't
- 21:25Speaker 2: learn anything for the last four years.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Let's go way outside the box.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Wes Welker tighter pants, even the tightest of pants. I
- 21:32Speaker 2: think Wes Welker rocks on.
- 21:36Speaker 1: I don't think exist hammer pants.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Let's go down to Eldrid in North Carolina, Hilder.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Your personal hello to Tamara. Only what was that?
- 21:50Speaker 8: You know, I was ump about move on. We didn't
- 21:54Speaker 8: have a little.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Bait I did to Eldrid. I did to bait.
- 22:00Speaker 8: But I'm with everybody else's problem with you too, man.
- 22:03Speaker 8: I wish like the devil did some more offensive homework
- 22:07Speaker 8: instead of another defensive guy.
- 22:10Speaker 1: And I don't mind the choice. I just would have
- 22:12Speaker 1: liked to have had more information.
- 22:15Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, me too. I mean, I mean, to me,
- 22:18Speaker 8: it seemed like they was, like y'all said, boxed into
- 22:21Speaker 8: the contract. Well about the contract. If Ben Johnson or
- 22:25Speaker 8: Stovic or somebody else is better, you know, give you
- 22:28Speaker 8: a better revelation with the offense, because that's mainly what
- 22:31Speaker 8: we heard that. I don't care for the next couple
- 22:34Speaker 8: of years. I'm figuring it's gonna take us a minute
- 22:36Speaker 8: to get back up there. But he got a long
- 22:39Speaker 8: way to go, and I wish it was offensive. Mind
- 22:41Speaker 8: of guy that did That's all.
- 22:42Speaker 1: I got, Fellas, and I would agree with el I mean, like,
- 22:47Speaker 1: I know this was like a thing on the show
- 22:49Speaker 1: when we did the show yesterday. Like, I don't know
- 22:51Speaker 1: a lot of people that think it's great. He got
- 22:54Speaker 1: fired isn't that great. I just don't know a lot
- 22:56Speaker 1: of people. I know there are people, I'm not telling
- 22:59Speaker 1: you this none. I just don't know a lot of
- 23:01Speaker 1: people that revel in other people's misery. And you know,
- 23:05Speaker 1: I guess there's you know, certain people out there that do.
- 23:07Speaker 1: I don't take a lot of glee and a guy
- 23:11Speaker 1: who's been here for twenty four years not being the
- 23:13Speaker 1: coach anymore.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:14Speaker 5: Yeah, most of their response seemed more so like we're
- 23:17Speaker 5: so thankful for everything that he did, but we do
- 23:20Speaker 5: also understand that it's time to move on.
- 23:22Speaker 2: It was definitely I saw a.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Lot of people that were like apoplectic that they governed
- 23:26Speaker 3: of Bill Belichick. I mean that was that was the
- 23:27Speaker 3: biggest between thank you, like, let's just appreciate what it
- 23:31Speaker 3: was that between that group. I didn't really see the
- 23:34Speaker 3: oh it's about time like that group didn't.
- 23:35Speaker 1: I mean, how about the group that the media did this? Media?
- 23:39Speaker 4: The media and.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Games Wait, we can get to that second. But I
- 23:45Speaker 2: agree that I saw in Twitter and and Paul's shows
- 23:49Speaker 2: are not good sample sizes. I tell people that all
- 23:53Speaker 2: the time. Yeah, it's not a good sample size. But
- 23:55Speaker 2: I did see a lot of people that we were apoplectic.
- 23:59Speaker 2: We got some email about it. You know, what, what
- 24:01Speaker 2: the hell are they thinking? But I'd not like to
- 24:04Speaker 2: take any shots, But like, I think that those people,
- 24:07Speaker 2: we are uniquely connected to the team where we see
- 24:11Speaker 2: everything that's going on with the team on a day
- 24:13Speaker 2: to day basis during the season, where some other people
- 24:17Speaker 2: not totally like live your life, but like you might
- 24:20Speaker 2: just be checking in on Sundays at one o'clock and
- 24:23Speaker 2: sit down and watch the game casually, and aren't I
- 24:26Speaker 2: don't think people looked at it that look at it
- 24:28Speaker 2: that way, don't look at it realistically of what the
- 24:30Speaker 2: last four years of this football team have looked like,
- 24:33Speaker 2: Like they really have not been a competitive football team
- 24:36Speaker 2: since Tom Brady walked out the door.
- 24:38Speaker 1: And you can give the records and it's like thirty
- 24:40Speaker 1: three and forty four or something like that from the
- 24:42Speaker 1: halfway point of that twenty nineteen season on. That doesn't
- 24:46Speaker 1: even tell you everything. Would be really alarming to me
- 24:50Speaker 1: if I were Robert Kraft and Jonathan Craft. Is the
- 24:53Speaker 1: way the end of the season was sort of analyzed
- 24:59Speaker 1: by the media, and I even yesterday I heard a
- 25:03Speaker 1: lot of people say, like, you know, like and then
- 25:05Speaker 1: the way that they came down the stretch with spirited
- 25:08Speaker 1: wins over Pittsburgh and Denver and competitive games against Kansas
- 25:13Speaker 1: City and Buffalo. And I'm thinking to myself.
- 25:15Speaker 2: The competitive game against Kansas City was great.
- 25:17Speaker 1: But I'm not even arguing whether or not you thought
- 25:19Speaker 1: it was. It wasn't. I'm not arguing whether or not
- 25:21Speaker 1: it was competitive. What I'm arguing is have we really
- 25:24Speaker 1: fallen to the point where we're now excited that we
- 25:27Speaker 1: were able to only lose by ten at home to
- 25:31Speaker 1: Kansas City Like that was supposed to be like some
- 25:34Speaker 1: sort of like momentum that the team was building Like
- 25:39Speaker 1: that to me would be alarming. Like we've gone in
- 25:42Speaker 1: the span of five years to winning a Super Bowl
- 25:45Speaker 1: to being really enthusiastic about only losing by ten at
- 25:49Speaker 1: home to Kansas City.
- 25:50Speaker 2: They finished in the last place in the conference, like
- 25:54Speaker 2: they're the worst team in the AFC, and they played
- 25:58Speaker 2: like it like it wasn't not like it was a fluke.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Oh no.
- 26:00Speaker 2: And I just the other thing about the media pushing
- 26:04Speaker 2: pushing him out, and I agree with Eldred, like yesterday
- 26:07Speaker 2: was a day of reflection. I was happy. It was
- 26:10Speaker 2: not like I wasn't walking around here like you know, happy,
- 26:14Speaker 2: go lucky, like I got here yesterday and it was
- 26:16Speaker 2: I felt like we were at a funeral. It was horrible.
- 26:18Speaker 2: But at the same time, you have to all we
- 26:23Speaker 2: told you was what we were seeing and what was
- 26:25Speaker 2: happening on the field. None of it was just speaking
- 26:29Speaker 2: for myself. None of it was out of spite. None
- 26:30Speaker 2: of it was because he he mumbles at press conferences
- 26:33Speaker 2: or didn't answer my questions or whatever. None of it
- 26:36Speaker 2: had anything to do with that they were getting. They
- 26:38Speaker 2: were losing games at a at a record rate for
- 26:41Speaker 2: this franchise and for this era of football, and that
- 26:46Speaker 2: was what it was. They had flaws all over the
- 26:48Speaker 2: roster for the most part, Like defensively their flaws weren't catastrophic,
- 26:52Speaker 2: but offensively in special teams they made more sloppy mistakes
- 26:55Speaker 2: and more, you know, just bad football plays. And then
- 26:59Speaker 2: I've ever seen them, and like, eventually you have to
- 27:02Speaker 2: accept that, like and we just told you how it was.
- 27:04Speaker 2: And now we ran them out of town, Like okay.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Let's all let's jump back to the phone. So we
- 27:08Speaker 3: got Nick and omaha, Heynick, Hey.
- 27:12Speaker 9: Guys, how's it going good? A big fan of the show,
- 27:16Speaker 9: and you know, I'm a little timit. Hey, I'm a
- 27:18Speaker 9: little nervous. I don't know how Paul feels about feelings.
- 27:20Speaker 4: A little nervous talk right now, but just spit it out.
- 27:25Speaker 5: I was.
- 27:27Speaker 9: I was playing catch up this morning on the podcast,
- 27:29Speaker 9: and I just wanted to float something out there and
- 27:31Speaker 9: I thought was interesting. I know, you guys take some
- 27:34Speaker 9: interesting perspectives. I thought you enjoy this. Maybe not, but
- 27:38Speaker 9: something that Paul said or sorry not fall sorry Paul.
- 27:41Speaker 9: Something that Robert said yesterday and we're talking about coaches
- 27:44Speaker 9: and everything, and the reporter asked what went wrong last season?
- 27:49Speaker 9: And I think he took the words out of my mouth.
- 27:51Speaker 9: It was just kind of like I think we all
- 27:52Speaker 9: were like, yeah, I don't know, just like it was
- 27:54Speaker 9: kind of hard to diagnose what went wrong. But I
- 27:58Speaker 9: did have this thought, is it a little concerning to
- 28:00Speaker 9: hear that from Robert at all? Someone who's plugged in
- 28:04Speaker 9: and yeah, just kind of in the ins and outs
- 28:08Speaker 9: to hear him say I don't know, Like, I think
- 28:10Speaker 9: it would be a little bit more satisfying to hear
- 28:12Speaker 9: some sort of a diagnosis. But I'll take it off
- 28:15Speaker 9: the air.
- 28:15Speaker 4: But thanks I appreciate it. I mean, just for me.
- 28:19Speaker 3: I just don't think he wanted to throw anybody under
- 28:20Speaker 3: the bus. He was just being diplomatic. I mean, it's
- 28:23Speaker 3: obviously you can. I mean, he's talked about the draft before,
- 28:25Speaker 3: he's talked about how they missed on the draft picks,
- 28:26Speaker 3: which is an easy place to go. I agree that
- 28:28Speaker 3: there's a lot of different things, but I just didn't
- 28:30Speaker 3: think it was the time for him to be like, well,
- 28:32Speaker 3: he's draft sucked, and you know.
- 28:34Speaker 1: What's the bigger thing. Yeah, Mac, we don't have the
- 28:37Speaker 1: quarterback play. But he's not going to do that.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Yeah he shouldn't, right, That's the way I took it
- 28:41Speaker 2: as well. And just sitting in the room, like he
- 28:43Speaker 2: paused for a while trying to think of what's the
- 28:46Speaker 2: best way to answer this question, and I think he
- 28:48Speaker 2: just decided that pleading the fifth was the best way
- 28:50Speaker 2: to answer the question, and that's sort of what we got.
- 28:53Speaker 2: But I also think that you know, you guys, we
- 28:56Speaker 2: were talking about this on Catch twenty two yesterday, which,
- 28:58Speaker 2: by the way, that whole podcast is like not exactly evergreen.
- 29:03Speaker 2: So I want Adam Peters, yeah right, you know, Mike
- 29:07Speaker 2: Rabel and Adam Peters. That's that's what's coming to town.
- 29:10Speaker 2: We're talking about this yesterday though, just like the idea
- 29:13Speaker 2: of having not just a general manager, but maybe like
- 29:16Speaker 2: a VP of Football Operations or President of Football Operations
- 29:20Speaker 2: that oversees the entire operation, because I don't I don't
- 29:26Speaker 2: know if Robert Craft and Jonathan Craft are technically qualified
- 29:31Speaker 2: to like be making these high level football decisions on
- 29:33Speaker 2: that in terms of personnel and all that kind of stuff.
- 29:36Speaker 2: And I just look at some of the other organizations
- 29:39Speaker 2: in town, and you know, the Bruins, for example, with
- 29:41Speaker 2: cam Neely. You know, they have Cam Neely up at
- 29:45Speaker 2: the top, then they have Don Sweeney as the general manager,
- 29:47Speaker 2: and then obviously Jim Montgomery's the coach, and cam Neely's
- 29:51Speaker 2: job is just to make sure that Don Sweeney and
- 29:53Speaker 2: Jim Montgomery aren't steering off a ledge, you know, when
- 29:56Speaker 2: they make some of these roster decisions and things like that.
- 29:59Speaker 2: And I want if one of you know, our great
- 30:02Speaker 2: well decorated former players just you know, would want to
- 30:05Speaker 2: have a role like that in the organization. Maybe somebody
- 30:07Speaker 2: that was just let go by the Titans, for example,
- 30:10Speaker 2: to come in and be the face of the franchise
- 30:13Speaker 2: from the top, you know, and run the team like that.
- 30:16Speaker 2: I think when you watch Bill Belichick walk out the door,
- 30:20Speaker 2: you're losing not just the coach, but you're also losing
- 30:23Speaker 2: the football figure in the mind, the head of the snake,
- 30:28Speaker 2: and like you can't just replace that with Gerard Mayo
- 30:31Speaker 2: and Elliott Wolf. Like, I just don't think that that's
- 30:34Speaker 2: you're losing too much brain power by doing it that way.
- 30:37Speaker 5: Do you think would be open to not being the
- 30:40Speaker 5: head coach though, and like not physically coaching.
- 30:43Speaker 2: I have no I honestly have no idea, but I
- 30:46Speaker 2: just look at it, and I it's more so in
- 30:49Speaker 2: other sports, I would say than in football. I think
- 30:51Speaker 2: the best example in football is probably John Lynch with
- 30:53Speaker 2: the forty nine ers. I was thinking Devin mccordy, Yeah,
- 30:57Speaker 2: Vivin mccortdy being great, and the guy.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Was thinking of was John Lynk, you know, like a
- 31:00Speaker 1: heady safety. He's been around for a long time.
- 31:03Speaker 2: I just look at it, and I look at it locally,
- 31:05Speaker 2: you know, guy like Brad Stevens makes the jump from
- 31:07Speaker 2: coaching to the front office, and like, I just think
- 31:10Speaker 2: sometimes coaching gets tiring. It's a it's a long, long hours,
- 31:16Speaker 2: long days. And I think one of the things that
- 31:17Speaker 2: Brabel got frustrated with in Tennessee was that he didn't
- 31:20Speaker 2: have personnel control, so you know, he had somebody continuously
- 31:23Speaker 2: overruling him on the roster. So but Devin would be great.
- 31:26Speaker 2: I know he loves doing TV though.
- 31:28Speaker 1: So he's probably got a little easier.
- 31:30Speaker 4: Yeah, let's go out to Kansas. Hey, Joe, Hey, you guys,
- 31:35Speaker 4: thanks for calling it.
- 31:37Speaker 10: Hey, I was wondering. I think with Robert Kraft he
- 31:43Speaker 10: had an idea, like with Tom Brady, there was a
- 31:46Speaker 10: clear successor in kind of Jimmy Garoppolo and stuff like
- 31:49Speaker 10: that before that fell apart. I wonder if losing a
- 31:52Speaker 10: great like Tom Brady, if he kind of would have
- 31:56Speaker 10: thought a little bit more about a succession plan after
- 32:01Speaker 10: Bill Belichick, and that could be a reason why he
- 32:03Speaker 10: so quick to announce Kinna draw Mayo's candice so he
- 32:09Speaker 10: has coached. Yeah, I was wondering what you guys thought
- 32:11Speaker 10: about that.
- 32:12Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks, Joe, appreciate it.
- 32:14Speaker 2: It's a good point.
- 32:15Speaker 4: Yeah, no, it is.
- 32:15Speaker 3: And it was funny because, like the immediate after math yesterday,
- 32:18Speaker 3: I saw a couple of people that complete there's no
- 32:19Speaker 3: succession plan, Like, well, first.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Who said, how do you know?
- 32:23Speaker 3: I don't want to bring up names, But.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Like twenty minutes after they decided that Bill wasn't the
- 32:26Speaker 1: coach anymore, they were complaining.
- 32:28Speaker 2: When there was literally a succession plan written in writing
- 32:32Speaker 2: an avery.
- 32:33Speaker 3: Social media person who's just been on absolute hair the
- 32:35Speaker 3: last couple of days about how how tultably this has gone.
- 32:38Speaker 4: So probably not a good example.
- 32:39Speaker 3: I mean, it's not exactly straw man, but it's kind
- 32:41Speaker 3: of just like a straw social media argument where like
- 32:43Speaker 3: I saw something come across my timeline.
- 32:44Speaker 1: And they're pretty wispy.
- 32:45Speaker 3: It must respresent, you know, it's straw like. But I
- 32:48Speaker 3: mean I think like it was easy for them, though, right,
- 32:51Speaker 3: it was easy for them, like this is. I mean,
- 32:53Speaker 3: they did make it easy for themselves. But I think
- 32:54Speaker 3: everything you said, Paul was was apt. You know, you
- 32:57Speaker 3: don't really give yourself a chance to even kick the tires.
- 32:59Speaker 3: I'm like, Forrable, when you might not even have known
- 33:01Speaker 3: him like that, you would have had the opportunity to
- 33:03Speaker 3: maybe consider someone like that.
- 33:04Speaker 1: I find the whole thing interesting to go back and
- 33:08Speaker 1: all signs pointed to the fact that that Mayo was
- 33:11Speaker 1: the guy, but to learn when it actually happens that
- 33:14Speaker 1: it was contractual, yeah, is a little different. And I
- 33:18Speaker 1: think that did kind of like tie their hands a
- 33:20Speaker 1: little bit.
- 33:20Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 33:20Speaker 2: He So he interviewed for at least two other jobs
- 33:24Speaker 2: in the twenty twenty two off season, right going into
- 33:27Speaker 2: the Patricia Judge here offensively, just to put some contexts
- 33:33Speaker 2: Denver the Eagles. Yeah, and he might have been interviewed
- 33:38Speaker 2: with the Raiders. So it might have been it might
- 33:40Speaker 2: have been three, might not have been Denver, might have
- 33:41Speaker 2: been Raiders, I'll get the exact But he interviewed with
- 33:44Speaker 2: multiple teams and then was going to be another hot
- 33:47Speaker 2: commodity in the twenty twenty three cycle if he hadn't
- 33:50Speaker 2: signed this extension with the Patriots. So I think that
- 33:53Speaker 2: they were just really fearful of that he was gonna
- 33:57Speaker 2: walk for another job, and so they'd said, well, why
- 34:00Speaker 2: don't we just everybody else thinks he's head coach material,
- 34:03Speaker 2: so why don't we just make him the success or here?
- 34:06Speaker 2: But I agree that I with Paul that I would
- 34:09Speaker 2: have rathered a more extensive search, and I hope for
- 34:13Speaker 2: general manager that we don't find out that this is
- 34:15Speaker 2: as simple as Elliott Wolf is getting a promotion and
- 34:18Speaker 2: just like we did today, it's like Monday, you know,
- 34:21Speaker 2: it's in all this is over. Like I really do
- 34:24Speaker 2: hope that that side of things they have a more
- 34:26Speaker 2: extensive search.
- 34:27Speaker 5: I will say, like hearing that it was in his
- 34:29Speaker 5: contract made me think back to the article surfacing about
- 34:33Speaker 5: like how he was rubbing people the wrong way. I
- 34:35Speaker 5: was like, Okay, now that makes sense because you know
- 34:38Speaker 5: he knew no matter what, like he was secure here,
- 34:41Speaker 5: like he didn't have a reason to be moping around
- 34:43Speaker 5: and upset and frustrated and angry, and.
- 34:46Speaker 1: That's why the twenty twenty three season was doomed to
- 34:48Speaker 1: fail before it even started.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think that was the best part of
- 34:52Speaker 2: Reese's pieces, which I thought was fantastic.
- 34:56Speaker 1: By the way, well then you know that's what he
- 34:57Speaker 1: used to call it, quog.
- 34:58Speaker 4: Right, Okay, yah to read that I would consume it.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I didn't want to like claim that as
- 35:04Speaker 1: my own. Paul's calls that was mine.
- 35:07Speaker 2: I thought that Mike obviously did a great job as
- 35:10Speaker 2: he usually does and summing it up, and I one
- 35:13Speaker 2: of the things that he pointed out was just the
- 35:15Speaker 2: awkwardness of that whole thing because Bill knew that Gerard
- 35:20Speaker 2: was named the successor. Gerard knew he was named the successor,
- 35:23Speaker 2: So it's just like this awkward like how long is
- 35:26Speaker 2: Bill going to hang on for until it's Gerrod's team?
- 35:29Speaker 2: And I think that that did create a weird dynamic.
- 35:32Speaker 2: And then Neo to Mary, you brought up earlier the
- 35:34Speaker 2: weird dynamic in the quarterback room. So now you have
- 35:36Speaker 2: a weird dynamic between probably your two most important coaches,
- 35:40Speaker 2: and then you have a weird dynamic between your quarterbacks,
- 35:42Speaker 2: and you look back on it, no wonder why they
- 35:44Speaker 2: won four games.
- 35:45Speaker 3: You know. Torod's like looking after like the Saints loss,
- 35:47Speaker 3: being like I might.
- 35:48Speaker 4: Be getting the call up a little sooner.
- 35:50Speaker 3: Yeah, like as the season went on, he must have
- 35:52Speaker 3: And how much of the coaching staff knew that?
- 35:53Speaker 2: Probably people talk, Yeah, I wouldn't say.
- 35:57Speaker 5: I would say I wouldn't be surprised if even the
- 35:58Speaker 5: players knew that, Like.
- 36:01Speaker 1: So like, just to take that a step further, I
- 36:04Speaker 1: don't know exactly who and which ones, but I have
- 36:07Speaker 1: to think there is certainly a group that's pretty tight
- 36:10Speaker 1: with Gerard that knew that Gerard had it in his
- 36:12Speaker 1: contract and were team girod And there were probably some
- 36:15Speaker 1: of the.
- 36:15Speaker 2: Other guys, don Nab and Teo all over.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Right, some of the other guys are like, really, Bill,
- 36:21Speaker 1: like he has that in his contract? Are you kidding me? Like,
- 36:24Speaker 1: like just in the team Bill. So now there's a
- 36:26Speaker 1: division among the coaching staff, there's a division among the players.
- 36:31Speaker 1: Wasn't wasn't a good thing?
- 36:32Speaker 2: And you also the other thing that that Reese had
- 36:35Speaker 2: in there too, was similar to what the heralds had reported. Uh,
- 36:39Speaker 2: was that last week or whatever that Bill thought that
- 36:42Speaker 2: patricia offense was making strides. And Bill was not totally
- 36:47Speaker 2: against Bill O'Brien coming in, but he didn't necessarily think
- 36:50Speaker 2: it was necessary to make a change. And so you
- 36:54Speaker 2: have Gerard getting it written into his contract that he's
- 36:57Speaker 2: the heir apparent. You have the crab telling him that
- 37:00Speaker 2: you need to hire Bill O'Brien and not keep Matt Patricia.
- 37:03Speaker 2: And from Bill's side of things, you can start to
- 37:05Speaker 2: see why he was probably a little bit unhappy being
- 37:09Speaker 2: here because he was getting overruled by ownership on football decisions.
- 37:13Speaker 2: And so I see both sides of it. Now that
- 37:15Speaker 2: you know those both those things were probably dysfunctional.
- 37:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:18Speaker 5: It's a bit of a head scratcher though, for you
- 37:20Speaker 5: to really look at that Patricia offense and say, oh,
- 37:23Speaker 5: they're we're making progress.
- 37:26Speaker 4: I found myself wanting to go back and look.
- 37:27Speaker 5: I mean not saying that it was, you know, better,
- 37:30Speaker 5: because Paul brought up multiple times like if you look
- 37:31Speaker 5: at the numbers from both years, like it.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Was better, but better two years ago than it was
- 37:36Speaker 1: this year numbers wise, you just using the data, Yeah.
- 37:39Speaker 2: I will say that the first half against Buffalo in
- 37:42Speaker 2: the finale last year was their best half of offensive
- 37:45Speaker 2: football the entire season.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Yeah, And I would say those two things. Number one,
- 37:48Speaker 1: if you just go by the sheer numbers, it was better.
- 37:50Speaker 1: And number two, I thought it got better as the
- 37:52Speaker 1: year went on. Yeah, when they finally started stop the
- 37:56Speaker 1: the chuck and duck and stopped turning it over, it
- 37:58Speaker 1: got better. It got better this year. Yeah, the best
- 38:02Speaker 1: it probably was was the first game. Yeah.
- 38:04Speaker 2: Yeah, because that Week eighteen game against Buffalo. We can
- 38:08Speaker 2: go back revision is history and say if they don't
- 38:10Speaker 2: return two kickoffs like who knows, but they they had
- 38:13Speaker 2: they moved the ball, and that they had a great
- 38:15Speaker 2: first half offensively in that game, one of the better halves.
- 38:18Speaker 1: They did move the ball in that and.
- 38:19Speaker 2: They had a good night on Thanksgiving in Minnesota, you know,
- 38:23Speaker 2: in those games, and so they look, I'm not going
- 38:26Speaker 2: back and saying Patricia was. Yeah, But I can understand
- 38:30Speaker 2: from Bill's perspective why this all went south for him,
- 38:34Speaker 2: because I think we talk a lot about it, you know,
- 38:36Speaker 2: as employees of the team, and thinks, you know, the
- 38:38Speaker 2: team were still here. Bill's not, so we have to
- 38:40Speaker 2: talk about the future. But looking back on it with Bill, like,
- 38:43Speaker 2: I can see why he was probably ready to maybe
- 38:47Speaker 2: let go as well.
- 38:48Speaker 1: One last thing, Mike before you hit that is in
- 38:51Speaker 1: relation to that, like we mocked and ridiculed the idea
- 38:55Speaker 1: of trying to make some changes to the scheme yea
- 38:58Speaker 1: when Patricia did it. And I'm guilty of it just
- 39:01Speaker 1: as just as much as anybody else. I'm not excluding
- 39:03Speaker 1: myself from this. This year, it was like, you know,
- 39:07Speaker 1: they really got to get past this offense because the
- 39:10Speaker 1: time has passed, and I'm guilty of it. I'm telling you,
- 39:13Speaker 1: these are cliches that I've used this year. So I
- 39:16Speaker 1: do think that part of it was Bill O'Brien's doing. It,
- 39:19Speaker 1: and he's a real offensive coordinator, so everything is okay.
- 39:23Speaker 1: And when Patricia was doing it, there's no way this
- 39:25Speaker 1: can work. And I agree, and I don't think it worked.
- 39:28Speaker 1: I'm not trying to give you a revisions history that
- 39:30Speaker 1: it really was better than you think it wasn't. It
- 39:32Speaker 1: was terrible, but it was just as terrible this year,
- 39:34Speaker 1: if not more so. And now we think it's because
- 39:37Speaker 1: of the offense where they were kind of trying to
- 39:39Speaker 1: make some changes to the offense last year, not because
- 39:42Speaker 1: of Patricia. I think it was more of an organizational
- 39:44Speaker 1: decision to try to change things and people were mocking
- 39:47Speaker 1: them like these got The problem was those guys didn't
- 39:50Speaker 1: know how to implement the changes.
- 39:52Speaker 4: That was the problem.
- 39:52Speaker 1: I just it was good, right, Yeah, and the theory
- 39:55Speaker 1: was not wrong.
- 39:56Speaker 4: And then you wonder what Bill O'Brien coming back.
- 39:58Speaker 3: Did they just have to kind of blow that up
- 39:59Speaker 3: and just let Bill b I do what he does,
- 40:00Speaker 3: And do they have to you know, scrap changes that
- 40:02Speaker 3: maybe Bill actually wanted to employ.
- 40:04Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I think that you look at the Patricia
- 40:06Speaker 2: offense and I had to you trust the players, right,
- 40:10Speaker 2: like the guys that are actually trying to go out
- 40:12Speaker 2: there and make these plays. And the players with the
- 40:14Speaker 2: Patricia offense just continuously told us that they had no answers,
- 40:18Speaker 2: like there was no you know, the why thing right,
- 40:20Speaker 2: They had no They would ask questions as to what,
- 40:23Speaker 2: you know, why are we doing this? Why are we
- 40:24Speaker 2: doing that? Or you know, what do I do if
- 40:27Speaker 2: this happens? You know, if they blitz on this type
- 40:29Speaker 2: of play, like what am I supposed to do? And
- 40:31Speaker 2: they felt like the coaches didn't have confident, legitimate answers
- 40:36Speaker 2: for them. And I don't think that was what the
- 40:38Speaker 2: problem was this year. The problem this year I think
- 40:40Speaker 2: we're personnel and execution based versus last year. I think
- 40:44Speaker 2: a lot of people felt like they didn't know what
- 40:46Speaker 2: they were doing. And I think that that's a big difference.
- 40:49Speaker 2: But maybe their players were a little bit better than
- 40:52Speaker 2: we gave them credit for. In twenty twenty two.
- 40:54Speaker 3: Let's jump back to the phones. We got John down
- 40:55Speaker 3: on Louisiana. Hey, John, good, Yeah you can.
- 41:01Speaker 11: I was wondering being that, uh Mayo before the general manager,
- 41:06Speaker 11: does he kind of have the lead direction on what
- 41:10Speaker 11: the team is going to do, like be a free
- 41:11Speaker 11: agency in trade and do so? I hope that Cole
- 41:16Speaker 11: gets it.
- 41:16Speaker 3: By you that call of the day right there, Jo,
- 41:21Speaker 3: you just.
- 41:22Speaker 4: Locked it up. Thanks for calling in. Uh, that's a
- 41:24Speaker 4: good question. I mean that's it is a good question.
- 41:26Speaker 1: I don't have a defini answer. I don't think so.
- 41:29Speaker 4: Is it usually the GM, the GM tech?
- 41:31Speaker 1: Well, I just feel like that they're setting this up
- 41:33Speaker 1: so it's different and it's going to be more of
- 41:35Speaker 1: a collaborative process. And I'm not sure that I like it,
- 41:38Speaker 1: but I think that's where they're headed.
- 41:39Speaker 2: I would I would like to hope that it's more
- 41:41Speaker 2: of a traditional process right where you have a general manager,
- 41:45Speaker 2: you have a hierarchy, like it's not just one guy
- 41:48Speaker 2: running the whole show. And Bill earned it, like Robert
- 41:50Speaker 2: said yesterday, Bill had to earn that responsibility once you know,
- 41:54Speaker 2: they won the three Super Bowls and things like that.
- 41:56Speaker 2: But now it will be interesting to see who has
- 41:59Speaker 2: controlled thefty three man roster. Like the ninety man roster
- 42:02Speaker 2: is one thing. You know, GM comes in, he makes
- 42:04Speaker 2: a bunch of signings, whatever, But the fifty three man
- 42:06Speaker 2: roster is what it's really about.
- 42:08Speaker 1: That needs to be the coach. I agree, fifty three
- 42:10Speaker 1: needs to be there because you get players you gotta
- 42:13Speaker 1: let the guy got because if.
- 42:14Speaker 2: The GM you know, has controlled the ninety and he
- 42:17Speaker 2: signs T Higgins, grod Mayo is not cutting T Higgins right, Like,
- 42:20Speaker 2: that's not But grod Mayo is going to know better
- 42:23Speaker 2: than the general manager who the fifty second guy is
- 42:25Speaker 2: versus the fifty fourth guy, because he's the one that's
- 42:28Speaker 2: out there coaching these guys. So, uh yeah, I agree
- 42:31Speaker 2: with that.
- 42:31Speaker 3: Jump back CJ and case CJ.
- 42:34Speaker 4: I hope you're staying warm out there. How's it going?
- 42:37Speaker 6: Yeah, what's up?
- 42:37Speaker 8: Guys?
- 42:38Speaker 12: Hey, I uh, he kind of stole my idea. I
- 42:41Speaker 12: was gonna I read the Mike re season, I was
- 42:44Speaker 12: I wanted to chat with you guys about that.
- 42:45Speaker 6: But I'll just go back.
- 42:46Speaker 12: To something that I saw yesterday is a pretty interesting
- 42:50Speaker 12: history of the past three coaches of the Patriots Belichick.
- 42:55Speaker 12: It's Tee Carroll and it's Bill Parcells, and one of
- 42:57Speaker 12: them is already in the hall and the other two
- 42:59Speaker 12: are going there. Or do you do you think that
- 43:01Speaker 12: that's uh, you know, that that legacy that Gerrod's following,
- 43:06Speaker 12: Do you think that's on any of his mind with
- 43:09Speaker 12: the exprecations that the rest of us have as fans
- 43:12Speaker 12: being the last you know, going back past past Belichick
- 43:15Speaker 12: now thirty years of potential success. What do you guys
- 43:20Speaker 12: think about that?
- 43:21Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks c J. I appreciate it. Uh.
- 43:23Speaker 2: I think that's check, you.
- 43:25Speaker 1: Know, like I think that's Belichick follow you got to
- 43:28Speaker 1: just be you.
- 43:30Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's kind of like the probably the
- 43:33Speaker 5: question Mac guy all the time, like, oh, following Tom Brady,
- 43:36Speaker 5: not so much falling Camp because he was just there.
- 43:38Speaker 5: But I think when you when you focus too much
- 43:41Speaker 5: on that and trying to beat someone's legacy or being
- 43:44Speaker 5: someone choose, I think you can get.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Yourself in trouble.
- 43:46Speaker 5: So I'm kind of hoping he just is himself and
- 43:49Speaker 5: and doesn't change who he is to try to be,
- 43:52Speaker 5: you know, the next Pill Belichick.
- 43:53Speaker 2: You know, Yeah, the coaching tree. When you think about
- 43:56Speaker 2: all the failures of the coaching tree, McDaniel's judge, Patricia,
- 43:59Speaker 2: I think a lot of the things you hear about
- 44:01Speaker 2: those guys and their other stops is that they were
- 44:03Speaker 2: these disciplinary and hard nosed head coaches, and people were
- 44:06Speaker 2: kind of like, you think you're Bill Belichick, but you're
- 44:08Speaker 2: not Bill Belichick. And I think Girod Mayo at least
- 44:11Speaker 2: so far has not been that way, and I hope
- 44:14Speaker 2: that it stays that way. But that doesn't you know,
- 44:16Speaker 2: I'm polo you said earlier. That doesn't mean that there
- 44:19Speaker 2: isn't Bill instilled in girod Mayo. It just kind of
- 44:21Speaker 2: comes out in a different way, and I think that's
- 44:23Speaker 2: what they're hoping.
- 44:24Speaker 4: Yeah, be nice, Cool to be nice.
- 44:28Speaker 3: Jody down in Atlanta. Hey, Jody, you don't be getting
- 44:30Speaker 3: Bill Belichick.
- 44:30Speaker 13: What do you think about that?
- 44:31Speaker 4: You want Bill Belichick down there in Atlanta?
- 44:34Speaker 7: Oh?
- 44:34Speaker 9: Man, I was just about to talk about that.
- 44:37Speaker 13: The first first thing I was gonna say is Deuce
- 44:39Speaker 13: was wrong. Man, sounds like you hit one too many.
- 44:42Speaker 8: Okay, yeah, right, But yeah, they wanted.
- 44:46Speaker 13: Bill Belichick down here in Atlanta. I think it's so funny,
- 44:49Speaker 13: like over the last years since you know, we beat
- 44:52Speaker 13: them twenty eighty three games.
- 44:58Speaker 4: As soon as he said twenty three, it.
- 44:59Speaker 13: Went out whole organization and just hearing them now clamoring
- 45:03Speaker 13: for him, and it would be so ironic. A he's
- 45:05Speaker 13: the person that takes them back to this or not,
- 45:08Speaker 13: back to the Super to the Super Bowl and finally
- 45:10Speaker 13: get them over to Hume after they completely bashed him
- 45:13Speaker 13: for the last few years.
- 45:16Speaker 4: That's good.
- 45:17Speaker 3: I guess we'll We'll have to wait. Seats does seem
- 45:19Speaker 3: like one of the favorite sectuality appreciated. Uh, I mean
- 45:22Speaker 3: a little bit of speculation.
- 45:24Speaker 2: We have seth Wickersham Autopsy of the Patriots. The it
- 45:30Speaker 2: was the Patriots way until it wasn't so good and
- 45:35Speaker 2: then apparently this is just one quoted in the in
- 45:38Speaker 2: turn Mike, Mike cadlick is uh is quoting the good ones. Sorry,
- 45:42Speaker 2: I hope he doesn't doesn't leave me a straight here,
- 45:45Speaker 2: but this was a quote from the piece. Uh. Bill
- 45:48Speaker 2: had told me that Brady couldn't play anymore, Kraft said
- 45:51Speaker 2: privately afterward, and then he goes out and wins the
- 45:54Speaker 2: effing super Bowl. So that was that was where the
- 45:59Speaker 2: piece starts, is Brady's exit, and then it goes from there.
- 46:03Speaker 4: All right, So that just dross on ESPN.
- 46:05Speaker 3: I'm guessing with a new seth Wickersham behind the scenes
- 46:08Speaker 3: now he wrote what the what?
- 46:10Speaker 4: What did he write there that.
- 46:10Speaker 3: He had the with don Nada, Oh and Nada the
- 46:14Speaker 3: behind the scenes, So I'm sure he's got plenty of
- 46:16Speaker 3: stuff that's brutal.
- 46:17Speaker 1: The pre eminent Patriots autopsy reporter.
- 46:20Speaker 3: Well, we can all look forward to h to reading
- 46:22Speaker 3: some of that. Let's try to get to some of
- 46:23Speaker 3: these emails here before we wrap up this emergency.
- 46:25Speaker 4: We can go forty six minutes.
- 46:27Speaker 3: It seems these things go pretty easy. Any chance, the
- 46:30Speaker 3: Crafts make a phone call the saban to be the
- 46:33Speaker 3: president of football operations. That's from Courtney.
- 46:37Speaker 5: I heard that he's getting an admin role at Teatown.
- 46:41Speaker 3: Oh that sounds perfect, Claire Wright said, hello everyone him Marian, Hello,
- 46:45Speaker 3: emergency pod FITZI really sold me on reasons for Raabel
- 46:49Speaker 3: as head coach. So the Mayo news mildly bummed me out,
- 46:51Speaker 3: but I will come around.
- 46:52Speaker 4: I'm sure, of course, that's Claire.
- 46:54Speaker 3: My question is do you feel any better or worse
- 46:56Speaker 3: about that number three draft pick, as in who they
- 46:58Speaker 3: may take now that you know it's at least Mayo
- 47:00Speaker 3: at the top.
- 47:01Speaker 5: I was thinking about that. I was like, do you
- 47:03Speaker 5: think about like the top quarterbacks in your choice of
- 47:07Speaker 5: offensive coordinator, like trying to find someone who fits their style.
- 47:11Speaker 3: I like, it's like Jiwd's the defensive guy, and you
- 47:14Speaker 3: feel like he's gonna watch That's what you're like, Dude,
- 47:16Speaker 3: you can't you can't you got to.
- 47:17Speaker 4: Take an offensive guy, right.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Yeah. I do like the idea though that the quarterback
- 47:23Speaker 2: is now going to be given to somebody that played
- 47:25Speaker 2: in his younger yep, and he can relate to him,
- 47:28Speaker 2: especially nowadays, like you're talking about Bill a seventy one
- 47:31Speaker 2: year old Bill Belichick coaching a twenty one year old
- 47:34Speaker 2: Jaden Daniels, Like it's just a big, big age gap there,
- 47:37Speaker 2: And I just feel like Gerard will be able to
- 47:40Speaker 2: whether it's Jadon Daniels, Drake May, whoever, could have a
- 47:44Speaker 2: better relationship with that player and be able to relate
- 47:46Speaker 2: because whether it was whoever you want to blame for
- 47:49Speaker 2: the Mac Jones relationship with Bill Belichick, that relationship did
- 47:53Speaker 2: not go well. And I think a lot of it
- 47:55Speaker 2: was was about just age and the difference in the
- 47:59Speaker 2: you know, Mac it to know why and Bill told
- 48:01Speaker 2: him to shut up and play, you know, like get
- 48:04Speaker 2: and that that that was sort of the way that
- 48:06Speaker 2: that that situation unfolded and why it kind of decayed
- 48:10Speaker 2: was because you know, frankly, I don't think Bill Belichick
- 48:13Speaker 2: liked Mac Jones very much, and just as a as
- 48:16Speaker 2: a kid, as a person, you know, and I can
- 48:19Speaker 2: understand it, like it's somebody that I'm not quite as
- 48:21Speaker 2: young as Mac, but I can understand why somebody from
- 48:24Speaker 2: Bill's guard would be like, what the hell is this?
- 48:27Speaker 2: This kid is just a he's you know, spoiled. Like
- 48:30Speaker 2: I'd say it that way, It is the best way
- 48:32Speaker 2: to say it.
- 48:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I think like this one from Katina and Houston
- 48:36Speaker 3: just said, one of my concerns, based on what we've
- 48:37Speaker 3: observed during Bill's tenure, is the importance of relationships between
- 48:41Speaker 3: coaches in New England. This has proved to be both
- 48:43Speaker 3: positive and negative, Ernie and Judge. Since Mayo has only
- 48:47Speaker 3: been here, does he have enough connections relationships with people
- 48:50Speaker 3: outside the organization that can bring new perspectives to fill
- 48:53Speaker 3: out the coaching staff? Is my concern relevant?
- 48:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it is.
- 48:59Speaker 3: Yeah, she said she loves you guys, an so oh,
- 49:02Speaker 3: thank you for all you do a.
- 49:03Speaker 2: Lot of personal shoutouts.
- 49:05Speaker 1: Yeah you noticed. But I do think that's a legit
- 49:08Speaker 1: concern because I don't know how many relationships Mayo has
- 49:12Speaker 1: been able to develop an issue a time in the league,
- 49:14Speaker 1: you know, in terms of that kind of really, and
- 49:16Speaker 1: I'm not talking about players, you know, I'm sure he
- 49:18Speaker 1: has a million friends that he played with and whatnot,
- 49:22Speaker 1: but in terms of coaches, administrators, gms and decision makers, advisors,
- 49:27Speaker 1: things that he can lean on. Whereas Bill had a
- 49:31Speaker 1: lot of that over his time. You know, when you
- 49:33Speaker 1: think back to the you know, the Pioli's, the Dematrofs,
- 49:36Speaker 1: the Ernie Adams and those kinds of people, he had
- 49:39Speaker 1: a lot of people in his corner.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's why I'm going to keep banging the
- 49:43Speaker 2: table to bring in another person in.
- 49:46Speaker 4: That rush offensive staff because.
- 49:48Speaker 2: I just feel like that Girod Mayo is going to
- 49:51Speaker 2: need some help, like he's with in terms of like
- 49:54Speaker 2: the CEO elements of being the head coach. I think
- 49:57Speaker 2: he's going to need some guidance and he's going to
- 49:59Speaker 2: need some help, And I think it would be great
- 50:01Speaker 2: to have somebody on staff, whether it's the offensive coordinator,
- 50:05Speaker 2: whether it's somebody upstairs that has that kind of you
- 50:09Speaker 2: know history. The one guy that I I would say,
- 50:11Speaker 2: you know, we all. I think hope that DeMarcus Covington
- 50:14Speaker 2: stays and maybe he's the defensive coordinator for Girod. But
- 50:18Speaker 2: Patrick Graham is another name that I would I would
- 50:20Speaker 2: throw out there as potentially coming to join the staff.
- 50:23Speaker 2: He's with the Raiders right now, but he was on
- 50:25Speaker 2: mcdaniels's staff with the Raiders, So when they clean house,
- 50:28Speaker 2: it will probably If they don't, you know, keep Antonio Pierce,
- 50:32Speaker 2: he's probably gonna end up being a free agent. Carn
- 50:34Speaker 2: Brisillo already jumped ship to the Giants with Dables, so
- 50:38Speaker 2: that's already.
- 50:39Speaker 1: I wonder if Graham would go back to the Giants.
- 50:41Speaker 2: I know it's possible, but the chair is already moving
- 50:44Speaker 2: in terms of that Raiders staff, and maybe Patrick Graham,
- 50:47Speaker 2: who played Excuse me, was the coach Mayo's coach. He
- 50:51Speaker 2: was a linebackers coach when dra Maya was playing with
- 50:54Speaker 2: the Patriots, so they definitely have a relationship.
- 50:57Speaker 5: I like the question because I do you wonder if
- 50:59Speaker 5: he has some of mentor that helped him through his
- 51:02Speaker 5: interview processes, you know, like the past couple of years
- 51:05Speaker 5: when he's gone into the interviews, like I know he
- 51:07Speaker 5: probably you know, picked Bill Belichick's brain, but I do
- 51:09Speaker 5: wonder if he's reached out and found his own network
- 51:12Speaker 5: to talk to guys who have been in his shoes
- 51:14Speaker 5: before that.
- 51:15Speaker 2: Are a little bit younger.
- 51:16Speaker 3: Got a good one here, from Hutters, he calls us
- 51:18Speaker 3: deuced dude, Dodett and Dad the duce.
- 51:23Speaker 4: You couldn't be my dad?
- 51:25Speaker 1: You care for that? You're told you how good your
- 51:28Speaker 1: email was yesterday?
- 51:30Speaker 2: Fred is dad. You're like, you're like.
- 51:32Speaker 1: Even though Fred's like three years older.
- 51:34Speaker 2: Than Yeah, you're like older brother.
- 51:38Speaker 4: I like this though out from Chutters.
- 51:39Speaker 3: When do you think Bill truly knew what his future
- 51:42Speaker 3: was going to be? Because he must have had insight
- 51:44Speaker 3: into the contract position with my own Like, do you
- 51:46Speaker 3: think that did he just try to.
- 51:49Speaker 4: Tough it out this year? But it's just it's hard
- 51:51Speaker 4: to see.
- 51:52Speaker 1: I think he thought they were going to win. I
- 51:54Speaker 1: don't think he ever does anything thinking it's going to
- 51:56Speaker 1: be a disaster. I think he felt like they could
- 51:58Speaker 1: put it together and win.
- 52:00Speaker 3: It didn't work, Yeah, but did he feel like his
- 52:02Speaker 3: hands were starting to be more and more tied to
- 52:03Speaker 3: the way he wants to.
- 52:04Speaker 1: But I figured, this is just my take. I feel
- 52:08Speaker 1: like he felt, you want to stack the deck against me. Okay,
- 52:12Speaker 1: I'm gonna go eleven and six and go to the playoffs,
- 52:14Speaker 1: Then what are you gonna do? That's how I think
- 52:16Speaker 1: he went into the season.
- 52:18Speaker 5: I do wonder when he looked at this roster. If
- 52:21Speaker 5: he really thought he could win with these guys.
- 52:24Speaker 2: I think so. I think he.
- 52:25Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure that based on some of the conversations
- 52:28Speaker 1: I've had, that that's what he felt.
- 52:29Speaker 2: I think Paul's right that he always thinks that he'll
- 52:32Speaker 2: if he has to put that lipstick on the pig.
- 52:34Speaker 1: And I can coach around it.
- 52:35Speaker 2: Yeah. I do wonder if this was a little bit
- 52:40Speaker 2: discussed between all the parties and with Bill. He's what
- 52:46Speaker 2: fifteen shy of Shuler right now? Right?
- 52:48Speaker 1: Well? Of yeah, passing him, I think it's fourteen, and
- 52:51Speaker 1: then fifteen would.
- 52:52Speaker 2: Be So if he won four games this year, let's
- 52:55Speaker 2: say they win eight or nine games this year, I
- 52:57Speaker 2: guess you could make an argument that in two years
- 53:00Speaker 2: he could have done it, right, like if they had
- 53:02Speaker 2: waited to do his succession plan until after twenty twenty four,
- 53:05Speaker 2: which is what I think the plan was. I mean,
- 53:06Speaker 2: they would have had to been really good for two
- 53:08Speaker 2: years to do it. But if he wins ten games
- 53:11Speaker 2: in ten games and all of a sudden he passes
- 53:13Speaker 2: Shula in twenty twenty four, and then he passed the torch,
- 53:16Speaker 2: like maybe that was what was discussed as the succession plan.
- 53:20Speaker 3: All right, let's grab a couple less calls here as
- 53:23Speaker 3: we bring this thing home.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Last call hour over the top.
- 53:26Speaker 4: Let's get down to Jackson in Alabama. Hey Jackson, Hey guys.
- 53:30Speaker 6: How are y'all?
- 53:31Speaker 5: Goo?
- 53:31Speaker 3: Good?
- 53:31Speaker 4: It's up.
- 53:33Speaker 6: Good.
- 53:34Speaker 9: I got just two points real quick.
- 53:35Speaker 1: One.
- 53:36Speaker 8: I love the thought of.
- 53:37Speaker 6: Mike Braid will be in like.
- 53:38Speaker 7: A president football operations, just having in that seat.
- 53:43Speaker 6: That would make me feel very comfortable about Darmeo being there.
- 53:47Speaker 9: And just kind of like somebody to look over the
- 53:49Speaker 9: top of him.
- 53:50Speaker 13: And the other one is an honest question to Evan
- 53:53Speaker 13: if he's ever really I mean, I know, we joke
- 53:55Speaker 13: about it a lot, if he's ever really thought about
- 53:58Speaker 13: coaching or.
- 54:01Speaker 8: I don't know, like you know, the.
- 54:06Speaker 13: Someone that could actually do it, you know what I mean.
- 54:08Speaker 2: But that is good, That is very flattering. I am
- 54:11Speaker 2: way too kind.
- 54:12Speaker 1: Some of us don't look that way.
- 54:15Speaker 2: Paul is right on this one. Actually, uh no, not
- 54:19Speaker 2: not really, because I do not think I'm not that
- 54:23Speaker 2: much of an egomaniac. I think that I could actually
- 54:26Speaker 2: actually do it.
- 54:26Speaker 3: Why don't you put this to the test, because I
- 54:28Speaker 3: think I'll be coaching flag football this year.
- 54:30Speaker 4: Why don't we have Evan put the playbook together for my.
- 54:33Speaker 2: Flag Teamerto Rico. No, I need all this run match
- 54:39Speaker 2: the entire time gives me vibe.
- 54:41Speaker 5: Evan gives me vibes of when your bro Peppers was
- 54:43Speaker 5: asked about flag football when he's like flag football, No,
- 54:46Speaker 5: I'm too violent for that.
- 54:47Speaker 2: I like people just to play the game. Because the
- 54:50Speaker 2: caller brought it up. I can't coach all right, Like
- 54:53Speaker 2: I know that. I like you no way. But personnel
- 54:57Speaker 2: has always like I've always loved that, Like the draft
- 55:00Speaker 2: is like my my favorite time of year.
- 55:03Speaker 1: So it's interesting. I would have thought the other way.
- 55:05Speaker 2: If I had to get if I had to go
- 55:07Speaker 2: into one direction, whether it would be in the personnel
- 55:10Speaker 2: department scouting for the draft or whatever, or like advanced
- 55:13Speaker 2: scouting of opponents, you know, like watching you know, the
- 55:18Speaker 2: upcoming opponents film and breaking that down. That would be
- 55:20Speaker 2: more of my thing. But like hands on, like going
- 55:23Speaker 2: out to practice every day, and like coaching players hands on, No,
- 55:27Speaker 2: like I look more out of place than Dante Scarneki did.
- 55:30Speaker 2: Like I can't do that now.
- 55:31Speaker 3: Sorry, sorry to the Las Army on that one. All right,
- 55:34Speaker 3: last call of the day. This is gonna be Jesse
- 55:36Speaker 3: in Washington.
- 55:37Speaker 4: Hey, Jesse, Hey, guys.
- 55:40Speaker 6: Quick question here, what have they done to address the
- 55:46Speaker 6: biggest problem that exists for the New England Patriots, which
- 55:49Speaker 6: is their offensive team? Offensive personnel. I feel like Giron
- 55:57Speaker 6: Mayo is the answer question that no one was asking,
- 56:01Speaker 6: which is do we need a leader? Do we need
- 56:03Speaker 6: someone who can remake the defensive side of the football.
- 56:06Speaker 6: He doesn't actually address what is the root cause of
- 56:10Speaker 6: the Patriots failures over the last several years. So I
- 56:13Speaker 6: guess why have we not taken more aggressive steps to
- 56:18Speaker 6: address the offense in the personnel on the side of
- 56:20Speaker 6: the offense?
- 56:21Speaker 4: Gotcha, good question, Jesse. Thanks.
- 56:24Speaker 1: Yeah, we waiting to see who's going to be running
- 56:26Speaker 1: the offense.
- 56:27Speaker 2: Right, I mean, that's to me when we we get
- 56:30Speaker 2: to go to Girod's presser on Wednesday at noon, and
- 56:34Speaker 2: I think we said that already, but that's when the
- 56:36Speaker 2: introductory press conference is. That's the number one question in
- 56:39Speaker 2: the room is what's the plan on offense? Like we
- 56:42Speaker 2: all love you, Girod, and like congratulations, happy for you.
- 56:46Speaker 2: Defense going to stay the same because you.
- 56:49Speaker 1: Know every single one of these guys congratulations.
- 56:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, like I I work for the team,
- 56:54Speaker 2: So me saying it is like I already have a
- 56:57Speaker 2: little bias in me, as you can probably tell, like these.
- 56:59Speaker 1: Are actually really happy these other.
- 57:01Speaker 2: People like never mind, the point is number one question
- 57:04Speaker 2: in the room has got to be we all right, Like,
- 57:07Speaker 2: we know you can coach defense. We know that side
- 57:09Speaker 2: of the ball is pretty set personnel wise too. What's
- 57:12Speaker 2: the plan on offense? What's what's your view, what's your
- 57:15Speaker 2: philosophy on offense? Because I went back and listened to
- 57:18Speaker 2: some of his responses during the season, and a couple
- 57:21Speaker 2: of them were okay, and a couple of them were
- 57:23Speaker 2: not so exciting, like he did.
- 57:25Speaker 1: You can't just say we want to score points.
- 57:27Speaker 2: He said, the score points. He said at one point
- 57:31Speaker 2: that he would be happy to win every game three
- 57:34Speaker 2: to nothing, and I threw up a little bit in
- 57:36Speaker 2: my mouth, So.
- 57:37Speaker 1: Like, why not be happy to win thirty to nothing? Right?
- 57:40Speaker 2: So that that that's the number one question?
- 57:44Speaker 1: Nine?
- 57:44Speaker 3: Why not?
- 57:45Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not telling you want to sacrifice your defense.
- 57:48Speaker 1: You don't have to sacrifice defense, But what's score a lot? Yeah,
- 57:51Speaker 1: and not give up any That's that fine? Fine?
- 57:55Speaker 5: Okay, So we're trying to see big twelve football where
- 57:58Speaker 5: there's just.
- 57:59Speaker 1: There you go, already did nothing of it?
- 58:02Speaker 3: All right, Well that's going to do it for this
- 58:03Speaker 3: emergency podcast. Of course, we get a long weekend coming up,
- 58:07Speaker 3: and then we'll have gid MAO officially introduced next week.
- 58:09Speaker 4: Maybe we'll get some answers as far as GM.
- 58:12Speaker 1: I guess we We'll have a show on Wednesday as well,
- 58:14Speaker 1: you know, with the twelve o'clock press conference. Maybe a
- 58:17Speaker 1: setup similar to what we did on Thursday. Maybe Mike
- 58:20Speaker 1: and I will be with Fred and maybe tomorrow and
- 58:22Speaker 1: Evan will be in the best conference to make sure
- 58:26Speaker 1: that you can graduate.
- 58:28Speaker 4: I'm so proud of you. You were my first choice.
- 58:31Speaker 2: I would like to congratulate you. Thank you.
- 58:33Speaker 5: Paul is breaking news on the pot here Well, emergency.
- 58:37Speaker 1: Shows, I think that's what we should do on Wednesday.
- 58:40Speaker 1: I'll bring it up to Fred and maybe he'll get
- 58:42Speaker 1: back to me. I don't know. I doubt it.
- 58:44Speaker 3: Persona non grata, I want to thank everybody for tuning
- 58:47Speaker 3: in love all the attention for the emergency pods.
- 58:49Speaker 4: You guys are clamoring for one, so we're happy to
- 58:51Speaker 4: give you one.
- 58:52Speaker 3: And who knows, hopefully this might not be the last
- 58:54Speaker 3: one of the off season. Otherwise, we'll see you Tuesday,
