- 0:05Speaker 1: Approache Production.
- 0:21Speaker 2: All right, we're doing a special podcast today because we
- 0:24Speaker 2: want to talk about Joe Arrow, who we've been seeing
- 0:28Speaker 2: him a lot on screens over the last few days
- 0:29Speaker 2: with State of Origin. You know, he's a former Origin player.
- 0:33Speaker 2: He played twelve games, I think.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, yeah, I think he played Yeah.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's been invited along with with the team
- 0:43Speaker 2: this year to be part of the prep. He saw
- 0:45Speaker 2: he was on the bus.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Did you say they set up a locker for him.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:48Speaker 4: Yeah, so in the at the stadium, within the chain rooms,
- 0:52Speaker 4: they set up his locker. They had a jersey hanging
- 0:55Speaker 4: up there too as well. I had his photo and yeah,
- 0:59Speaker 4: it was it was sitting there as part of the team.
- 1:01Speaker 4: So you know, I think a healthy Jay Row is
- 1:07Speaker 4: probably playing in that game. Yeah, because you know he's
- 1:11Speaker 4: someone that he just exudes Queensland spirit.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:15Speaker 4: He never stop the way that he played. Yeah, it
- 1:17Speaker 4: was just head down, bump up, not afraid of anything.
- 1:20Speaker 4: And I think that's why everyone that played with him
- 1:23Speaker 4: loved playing football with him, because he was definitely something
- 1:25Speaker 4: that you could rely on and a tough character.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Yeah and and yeah, and that's what I think he
- 1:31Speaker 3: wants to continue to see who he was, well who
- 1:34Speaker 3: everyone knows him as he's stubborn as hell.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember far out.
- 1:41Speaker 3: I was only I think I'm only two years older
- 1:43Speaker 3: than him, or a year older than Joie. You know,
- 1:46Speaker 3: he was in the twenties system straight after I went
- 1:50Speaker 3: to the first grade squad, and I've known him ever
- 1:53Speaker 3: since then and got along really well and played Origin together,
- 1:56Speaker 3: played a few games of Bronx together, and some of
- 2:01Speaker 3: the highlights that have been shown, you know he's scoring,
- 2:03Speaker 3: I'm jumping on top of him, and you know, I
- 2:06Speaker 3: just you remember the way he acted in games.
- 2:10Speaker 1: It was funny, like when he.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Was getting asked to come off to have a break,
- 2:14Speaker 3: get filthy out. So it's like telling him he did
- 2:17Speaker 3: the done a ship job.
- 2:19Speaker 1: It wasn't that.
- 2:19Speaker 5: He was just getting asked to come off because he
- 2:21Speaker 5: was tired. He goes, I'm not halfing tired. I ain't
- 2:24Speaker 5: coming up to give you one more shid. I've got
- 2:25Speaker 5: it in me.
- 2:27Speaker 3: I'm fine, yeah, and even with little niggles and injuries,
- 2:31Speaker 3: I'll be right. Can I run, I'm all goodly a
- 2:33Speaker 3: good idea, yeah, but if I can, though, like, is
- 2:35Speaker 3: it can I run?
- 2:36Speaker 1: Can I play it? This week. Yeah, that's joy.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Yeah, which excives me hope for what he's going through
- 2:41Speaker 4: at the moment. He is now that I think that's
- 2:45Speaker 4: how he's going to take on this.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Fight, this ship disease. Yeah, he's just going to be
- 2:51Speaker 1: head down, bump up.
- 2:53Speaker 4: He's spoken about he's going to do whatever it takes
- 2:55Speaker 4: and and try different things. And you know, we are
- 3:01Speaker 4: all like a thousand percent behind him and what he's
- 3:04Speaker 4: going to do.
- 3:06Speaker 3: And I think, you know, people have wondered what's you know,
- 3:09Speaker 3: what are people going to do? And a South Sydney
- 3:11Speaker 3: rabbit oz. The way they've done this is exceptional for one,
- 3:16Speaker 3: but it's not for it to not get out or
- 3:19Speaker 3: even a room or a hint or just a whisper
- 3:22Speaker 3: of anything, you know.
- 3:24Speaker 5: I take my hat off to them for that for one.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And then they because time it came, it was really
- 3:28Speaker 2: quick and sudden and no one was expecting it, and
- 3:31Speaker 2: so did.
- 3:32Speaker 3: You they it was seven months, eight months in even
- 3:37Speaker 3: longer maybe, so that's a long time, yeah, you know,
- 3:39Speaker 3: and you know, and they've even come out now and
- 3:42Speaker 3: just said they're going to be you know, they're they're
- 3:45Speaker 3: going to be paying for everything, you know, supporting him
- 3:48Speaker 3: the whole way, and a club would do that. But
- 3:51Speaker 3: I think it's still great that they've you know, they've
- 3:54Speaker 3: come out and probably said that that they're going to
- 3:56Speaker 3: be doing that. They're going to be supporting him, his family.
- 3:58Speaker 3: But like you said, everyone is going to be now
- 4:01Speaker 3: wanting to find ways to support him or do something.
- 4:06Speaker 5: What can we do? And I think that's the response
- 4:12Speaker 5: they were probably expecting.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm probably going to butcher this story because I'm
- 4:16Speaker 4: really unsure and who the person was.
- 4:17Speaker 1: But they went to a luncheon and I was at
- 4:20Speaker 1: the luncheon and it.
- 4:22Speaker 4: Was someone talking about their own diagnosis of modern neuron disease.
- 4:26Speaker 4: And left that lunch and said, I think this is
- 4:30Speaker 4: what I've got, so kind of you know, it's been
- 4:34Speaker 4: a little while, and in all honesty, I think he
- 4:39Speaker 4: may like you got to think he would have played
- 4:42Speaker 4: that whole season last year, because I reckon it's from
- 4:45Speaker 4: from from diagnosis. You can kind of go back two
- 4:49Speaker 4: years and then say that's kind of when you had it.
- 4:52Speaker 4: So last season he would have played a whole season
- 4:55Speaker 4: with this going on in his body, kind of not
- 4:57Speaker 4: knowing and understanding, and he was.
- 5:01Speaker 1: The best player like four games.
- 5:04Speaker 4: He won their Charity Awards, so you know, giving back
- 5:07Speaker 4: the access service and then giving back to his community.
- 5:10Speaker 4: And I think he might have even won their Players
- 5:12Speaker 4: Player Award as well. So he had such a great
- 5:15Speaker 4: end to his career.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Uh.
- 5:17Speaker 4: And yeah, I think it was just such a big,
- 5:20Speaker 4: big surprise that everyone that you know, that's another rugby
- 5:25Speaker 4: league buyer that's being diagnosed diagnosed with what is such
- 5:29Speaker 4: a shit disease.
- 5:31Speaker 1: We lost Carl to this.
- 5:33Speaker 4: And it affects everyone differently. I remember Carl was hands first,
- 5:37Speaker 4: so he said he was just trying to do his
- 5:39Speaker 4: buttons up one day and then like was.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Just struggling to put his put his buttons together.
- 5:45Speaker 4: And then when he got tested off the back of that,
- 5:48Speaker 4: so you know, was kind of like hands arms, legs,
- 5:52Speaker 4: so that you could still kind of have a conversation
- 5:55Speaker 4: with him for a while.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And I was I was lucky.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Enough to be able to sit down with Webbing and
- 6:01Speaker 4: do an interview with him on another podcast that I
- 6:03Speaker 4: was doing called we Are, and like it was really
- 6:08Speaker 4: interesting to see how resilient he was, but like he
- 6:11Speaker 4: just come to terms with it and all he wanted
- 6:14Speaker 4: to do was spend time with his family, do all
- 6:16Speaker 4: the things.
- 6:18Speaker 1: That like, you know, I didn't worry about any of
- 6:21Speaker 1: the bullshit in life.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Anywhere, just did stuff because you wanted to do stuff,
- 6:25Speaker 4: you wanted to spend time with people. So yeah, yeah,
- 6:28Speaker 4: it was such a such a great opportunity to sit.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Down with him and talk through that.
- 6:32Speaker 4: But you know, G is going to go through some
- 6:35Speaker 4: ups and downs over the next period of time, and yeah,
- 6:40Speaker 4: he's asked for support and.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Help, but also a little bit of privacy as well.
- 6:44Speaker 4: But I'm sure keeping it to the ground people, and
- 6:48Speaker 4: you know, there will be an opportunity at some point
- 6:50Speaker 4: in time. Maybe it's financial, maybe there's something else that
- 6:53Speaker 4: you can do to help out GI and his family,
- 6:56Speaker 4: because like you know, I'm not going to like say
- 7:01Speaker 4: that Gi was a rap bag. We were all rap bags.
- 7:04Speaker 4: He's really settled down in his life. Yeah, got engaged,
- 7:06Speaker 4: had a kid, and it's like he's like he's finally
- 7:10Speaker 4: grown up, got his big boy pants on. And then
- 7:13Speaker 4: you get some I diagnosis like this, and just you
- 7:17Speaker 4: just go. It just makes you so angry with the world.
- 7:22Speaker 4: It's not fucking fair to happen to anyone, anyone at all.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Oh yeah, no one deserves.
- 7:28Speaker 5: This and that's it.
- 7:29Speaker 3: That was my reaction when I first seen it and
- 7:31Speaker 3: read it, I went, fucking bullshit. Yeah, it's not like
- 7:34Speaker 3: it's not it like they've missed, they've they've done something wrong,
- 7:38Speaker 3: They've written the wrong thing.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Someone actually called me when this happened and said, I
- 7:43Speaker 4: got this stupid thing on Facebook. They said Joy Arrows
- 7:48Speaker 4: retired and he's got m m D. And I was
- 7:50Speaker 4: just like, oh, true. And then and the only reason
- 7:53Speaker 4: why I said that is because they've had a couple
- 7:55Speaker 4: of like AI hoax on there saying that my previous
- 7:59Speaker 4: players have died and passed away and stuff like that,
- 8:02Speaker 4: and so like I literally then had to like I
- 8:05Speaker 4: was going on all the news websites and stuff like that,
- 8:08Speaker 4: and then I saw the press conference and like it
- 8:11Speaker 4: was real.
- 8:12Speaker 1: It wasn't just a silly Facebook post.
- 8:15Speaker 4: So yeah, to everyone out there that's doing stupid, bloody
- 8:19Speaker 4: Facebook posts, is stupid.
- 8:20Speaker 1: It is unnecessary.
- 8:22Speaker 2: It has been just watching in the news over the
- 8:25Speaker 2: last couple of weeks, seeing the interviews from only a
- 8:29Speaker 2: few months ago, and now with Danica, the deterioration is
- 8:36Speaker 2: so rapid. Yeah, it's brutal, it's and it's terrifying. And
- 8:40Speaker 2: I think for anyone that's got kids, like I've got
- 8:42Speaker 2: a two year old, same.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I just yeah, it's stabbed in the heart. It is.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's the thing that we know why on
- 8:51Speaker 3: a really personal level, and yeah, just hit hits time.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Yeah. I stood there at the end of the kitchen
- 8:58Speaker 4: bench watching it with both my girls and they're like, like.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Dad, did you know him?
- 9:03Speaker 4: I said yeah, like they played footy with him, and
- 9:07Speaker 4: and like they were trying to ask me then about
- 9:09Speaker 4: the disease, and I said, what's kind of like, yeah, yeah,
- 9:13Speaker 4: your brain's not friendly to you anymore.
- 9:15Speaker 1: It stops sending signals.
- 9:16Speaker 4: And I said, and eventually, like it will stop sending
- 9:20Speaker 4: signals to his lungs and his heart and he would
- 9:23Speaker 4: just he'll pass away. And like they got upset and
- 9:27Speaker 4: I got upset, and I was just, yeah, it was.
- 9:29Speaker 4: It was a tough one to take.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Yeah, we should.
- 9:32Speaker 2: We should lighten it up for a second, because I
- 9:34Speaker 2: want to. I want to put a clip on which
- 9:35Speaker 2: you showed me the other day, Corey of Jai at
- 9:38Speaker 2: the end of State of Origin cele.
- 9:43Speaker 4: I mean, let's make some T shirts and all the
- 9:46Speaker 4: money go to it's an iconic.
- 9:49Speaker 2: If you don't know, this is him and a Nutscher.
- 9:54Speaker 1: We'll get we'll get those T shirts made.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I think he wore it the next year again.
- 10:02Speaker 3: I think you get that brought in the next the
- 10:05Speaker 3: next camp, the next series. And yeah, that's just him, brilliant.
- 10:11Speaker 5: He's happy, happy, you know, and just love it.
- 10:13Speaker 1: He was loved, loved being a part of a team. Yeah, yeah,
- 10:17Speaker 1: love he did work that.
- 10:20Speaker 2: You know, you never had to ask will he get
- 10:24Speaker 2: I know you said the South have already said they're
- 10:25Speaker 2: going to look after him with treatment, But what does
- 10:27Speaker 2: the NRL? Is there some type of system in place
- 10:30Speaker 2: for a player that gets ill with r o p A.
- 10:33Speaker 5: I think, you know, since they've come on board, what
- 10:35Speaker 5: have they been there? Eight years? Maybe longer, maybe longer. Yeah,
- 10:39Speaker 5: you know r o p A.
- 10:40Speaker 3: So the Rugby League Association Association in place, they got
- 10:46Speaker 3: a there's a lot of different avenues and stuff. But
- 10:48Speaker 3: hardship is it, you know, the hardships, hardship funding, there's
- 10:52Speaker 3: medical injuries. There's a lot there now in place for
- 10:59Speaker 3: players and families, past and present players. Ever since they've
- 11:04Speaker 3: come a long you know, there is a lot more now,
- 11:08Speaker 3: you know, care for the players.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I received an email the other day about they're
- 11:15Speaker 4: doing all health checks for a type player, looking at
- 11:18Speaker 4: all those things. So they've they've come a long way,
- 11:21Speaker 4: that Rugby League Players Association, and you've got to think, Joyce,
- 11:26Speaker 4: he would still have a contract at the moment, it
- 11:28Speaker 4: sounds he'll get that paid out. And that's again an
- 11:32Speaker 4: agreement that the r l p A really pushed hard
- 11:34Speaker 4: for with the clubs and with the NRAL too. You know, again,
- 11:39Speaker 4: players get injured all the time, and it was kind
- 11:43Speaker 4: of at some point in time up to the club's
- 11:45Speaker 4: discretion whether or not they wanted to pay out that
- 11:47Speaker 4: contract or not.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Jill, Yeah, Matt Dillett was one of
- 11:53Speaker 3: the last just before that came in. Yeah, but the
- 11:57Speaker 3: Bronx were great with it.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Well, yeah they did, because they did the same thing
- 12:01Speaker 1: for Geral as well was another one. And then the
- 12:05Speaker 1: Broncos didn't have to like they could have. And Grell
- 12:09Speaker 1: came through when.
- 12:10Speaker 4: He he just re signed a three year deal and
- 12:15Speaker 4: then got injured in that season and the Bronx, if
- 12:18Speaker 4: they wanted to go, said see you later, buddy.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Like you're done.
- 12:21Speaker 4: But they they honored the contract Gerald did have to
- 12:25Speaker 4: work at the club and he was in the club.
- 12:28Speaker 4: But yeah, they like it's funny to say it's come
- 12:31Speaker 4: a long way. Yeah, but the LP will be there
- 12:36Speaker 4: and pushing and and I'm sure like the end they've
- 12:40Speaker 4: got to jump behind it. There's been a lot of
- 12:42Speaker 4: people talking about different things. I know that I think
- 12:45Speaker 4: Try July has been scrapped by from sports bit because
- 12:49Speaker 4: of the whole trying to pull back from doing the betting,
- 12:54Speaker 4: but also clubs were getting a bit you know if
- 13:01Speaker 4: the post Try celebration again, so the concentration wasn't there,
- 13:05Speaker 4: so you know, teams that were still losing, we're doing
- 13:07Speaker 4: these celebrations and after the score to Try.
- 13:10Speaker 1: So maybe it's maybe it's.
- 13:13Speaker 5: July July.
- 13:19Speaker 3: But I remember watching one of the shows he's on
- 13:25Speaker 3: and he even said maybe a little bonus can be
- 13:28Speaker 3: if you're doing an arrow to the camera. I just think, yeah,
- 13:33Speaker 3: it's so cool and that that would be like the
- 13:36Speaker 3: ultimate respect to give back to a guy that gave
- 13:39Speaker 3: his whole life the game. And it's just like all
- 13:42Speaker 3: the players, and I know every single player would jump
- 13:45Speaker 3: on board, you know, a little you know, an arrow
- 13:48Speaker 3: for July. Joe Row and then you know what I
- 13:52Speaker 3: wants to that where that money to go, like.
- 13:54Speaker 4: Whether whether it's to his family with us to research,
- 13:57Speaker 4: whether it's Yeah, and I think whether he sets up
- 13:59Speaker 4: a foundation himself.
- 14:02Speaker 1: I believe they would.
- 14:03Speaker 5: I'd be surprised if that I didn't jump on board
- 14:05Speaker 5: with that. I think all that's it's all there. Yeah,
- 14:09Speaker 5: they've just got a press to go button with it.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Well, we'd love to have him on for a chat
- 14:15Speaker 2: to when he's ready to talk about it again. I
- 14:17Speaker 2: reckon that he would be an awesome chat. I know
- 14:20Speaker 2: he's you know, I've met him obviously, don't know him
- 14:23Speaker 2: like you two, but the couple of times that I
- 14:25Speaker 2: have met him, he's to blake that looks me in
- 14:27Speaker 2: the eye, shook my hand, always remember my name like
- 14:30Speaker 2: he was always just such a top blake. And yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 14:36Speaker 2: our thoughts and our prayers are with him on your
