Chapter thirty five. In this chapter we have three communions and three funerals Numeral
0:07
one. Three communions between God and Jacob. Number one. God ordered Jacob
0:13
to Bethel, and in obedience to that order, he purged his house of
0:18
idols and prepared for the journey Verses one through five. Number two. Jacob
0:25
built an altar at Bethel to the honor of God that had appeared to him,
0:31
and in performance of his vow Verses six and seven. Number three,
0:37
God appeared to him again and confirmed the change of his name and covenant with
0:42
him Verses nine through thirteen, of which appearance Jacob made a grateful acknowledgment Verses
0:50
fourteen and fifteen. Numeral two. Three funerals number one Deborahs Verse eight,
0:58
number two, Rachel's verse Verses sixteen through twenty, number three, Isaacs Verses
1:04
twenty seven through twenty nine. Here is also Reuben's incest Verse twenty two,
1:11
and an account of Jacob's sons Verses twenty three through twenty six. Jacob summoned
1:19
to Bethel. Jacob's journeys towards Bethel b. C. Seventeen thirty two,
1:26
Verse one, and God said unto Jacob, arise and go up to Bethel
1:30
and dwell there, and make there an altar unto God that appeared unto thee
1:36
when thou fleddest from the face of Esau, thy brother. Verse two.
1:41
Then Jacob said, unto his household and to all that were with him,
1:45
put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean and change
1:49
your garments verse three. And let us arise and go up to Bethel,
1:55
and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the
2:00
day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went
2:05
verse four. And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in
2:10
their hand, and all their ear rings which were in their ears. And
2:15
Jacob hid them under the oak which was by se Cham verse five. And
2:21
they journeyed, and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round
2:25
about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob. Here
2:31
numeral one, God reminds Jacob of his bow at Bethel and sends him thither
2:38
to perform it. Verse one. Jacob had said in the day of his
2:42
distress, if I come again in peace, this stone shall be God's house.
2:49
Chapter twenty eight, verse twenty two. God had performed his part of
2:53
the bargain and had given Jacob more than bread to eat and raiment to put
2:59
on. He had got an estate and had become two bands. But it
3:04
should seem he had forgotten his vow, or at least had too long deferred
3:09
the performance of it seven or eight years. It was now since he came
3:14
to Canaan. He had purchased ground there and had built an altar in remembrance
3:20
of God's last appearance to him when he called him Israel chapter thirty three,
3:25
verses nineteen twenty. But still Bethel is forgotten. Note time is apt to
3:34
wear out the sense of mercies and the impressions made upon us by them.
3:39
It should not be so, but so it is. God had exercised Jacob
3:45
with a very sore affliction in his Family chapter thirty four, to see if
3:50
this would bring his vow to his remembrance and put him upon the performance of
3:55
it. But it had not this effect. Therefore God comes himself and puts
4:02
him in mind of it. Arise, go to Bethel. Note one,
4:09
As many as God loves, he will remind of neglected duties one way or
4:15
another. By conscience or by providences. Two. When we have vowed a
4:21
vowed to God, it is best not to defer the payment of it.
4:26
Ecclesiastes five, verse four. Yet better late than ever, God bade him
4:32
go to Bethel and dwell there. That is, not only go himself,
4:36
but take his family with him, that they might join with him in his
4:41
devotions. Note in Bethel the house of God, we should desire to dwell.
4:48
Psalms Chapter twenty seven, verse four. That should be our home,
4:53
not our inn. God reminds him, not especially of his vow, but
4:59
of the aca vision of it. When thou fledest from the face of Esau.
5:03
Note the remembrance of former affliction should bring to mind the workings of our
5:10
souls under them. Psalms Chapter sixty six, Verses thirteen and fourteen, Numeral
5:16
two. Jacob commands his household to prepare for this solemnity, not only for
5:23
the journey and remove, but for the religious services that were to be performed
5:29
Verses two and three. Note one, before solemn ordinances, there must be
5:35
solemn preparation. Wash you, make you clean, and then come and let
5:42
us reason together. Isaiah Chapter one, Verses sixteen through eighteen two. Masters
5:49
of families should use their authority for the promoting of religion in their families.
5:56
Not only we, but our houses also should serve the Lord. Joshua chapter
6:01
twenty fourth, verse fifteen, observe the commands he gives his household, like
6:08
Abraham chapter eighteen, verse nineteen one. They must put away the strange gods,
6:15
strange gods in Jacob's family strange things. Indeed, could such a family
6:23
that was taught the good knowledge of the Lord admit them? Could such a
6:28
master to whom God had appeared twice and oftener connive at them? Doubtless this
6:34
was his infirmity. Note those that are good themselves can always have those about
6:42
them so good as they should be. In those families where there is a
6:46
face of religion and an altar to God. Yet many times there is much
6:51
amiss and more strange gods than one would expect. In Jacob's family. Rachel
7:00
had her Teraphim, which it is to be feared, she secretly made some
7:04
superstitious use of the captives of Siechim brought their gods along with them, and
7:13
perhaps Jacob's sons took some with the plunder. However, they came by them.
7:18
Now they must put them away. Two, they must be clean and
7:24
change their garments. They must observe adieu decorum, and make the best appearance
7:30
they could. Simeon and Levi had their hands full of blood. It concerned
7:35
them particularly to wash and to put off their garments that were so stained.
7:41
These were but ceremonies signifying the purification and change of the heart. What are
7:47
clean clothes and new clothes without a clean heart and a new heart? Doctor
7:54
Lightfoot, by their being clean or washing themselves understood. And Jacob's admission of
8:01
the proselytes of Sicham and Syria into his religion by baptism, because circumcision had
8:09
become odious. Number three, they must go with him to Bethel verse three.
8:16
Note masters of families, when they go up to the House of God,
8:22
should bring their families with them. Numeral three. His family surrendered all
8:26
they had that was idolatrous or superstitious. Verse four. Perhaps if Jacob had
8:33
called for them sooner, they would sooner have parted, with them, being
8:39
convicted by their own consciences of the vanity of them. Note sometimes attempts for
8:46
reformation succeed better than one could have expected, and people are not so obstinate
8:52
against them as we feared. Jacob's servants had even the retainers of his family,
9:00
gave him all the strange gods and the ear rings they wore, either
9:05
as charms or to the honor of their gods. They parted with all.
9:11
Note reformation is not sincere if it be not universal. We hope they parted
9:18
with them cheerfully and without reluctance, as Ephrium did when he said, what
9:24
have I to do any more with idols? Joseiah chapter fourteen, verse eight,
9:31
get you Hence Isaiah chapter thirty, verse twenty two. Jacob took care
9:37
to bury their images. We may suppose in some place unknown to them,
9:41
that they might not afterwards find them and return to them. Note we must
9:48
be wholly separated from our sins, as we are from those that are dead
9:52
and buried out of our sight. Cast them to the moles into the bats.
9:58
Isaiah Cha two u, verse twenty numeral four. He removes without molestation
10:05
from si Chem to Bethel verse five. The terror of God was upon the
10:11
cities, though the Canaanites were much exasperated against the sons of Jacob for their
10:18
barbarous usage of the Sichemites. Yet they were so restrained by a divine power
10:24
that they could not take this fair opportunity which now offered itself when they were
10:30
upon their march to avenge their neighbour's quarrel. Note the way of duty is
10:35
the way of safety. While there was sin in Jacob's house, he was
10:41
afraid of his neighbors. But now that the strange gods were put away and
10:46
they were all going together to Bethel, his neighbors were afraid of him.
10:50
When we are about God's work, we are under special protection. God is
10:56
with us while we are with him. And if he be for us,
11:01
who can be against us? See Exodus chapter thirty four, verse twenty four.
11:07
No man shall desire thy land when thou goest up to appear before the
11:13
Lord. God governs the world more by secret terror on men's minds than we
11:20
are aware of Jacob's arrival at Bethel v. S. Seventeen thirty two,
11:26
verse six. So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of
11:31
Canaan, that is Bethel, he and all his people that were with him
11:37
verse seven. And he built there an altar and called the place El Bethel.
11:43
Because there God appeared unto him when he fled from the face of his
11:48
brother verse eight. But Deborah, Rebecca's nurse, died, and she was
11:54
buried between Bethel under an oak, and the name of it was called long
12:00
Bachuth verse nine. And God appeared unto Jacob again when he came out of
12:05
paddan Aram and blessed him verse ten. And God said unto him, thy
12:13
name is Jacob. Thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but
12:18
Israel shall be thy name. And he called his name Israel. Verse eleven.
12:24
God said unto him, I am God Almighty, Be fruitful and multiply.
12:31
A nation and company of nations shall be of THEE, and king shall
12:37
come out of thy loins verse twelve. And the land which I gave Abraham
12:43
and Isaac to THEE, I will give it, and to thy seed after
12:48
THEE will I give the land verse thirteen. And God went up from him
12:54
in the place where he talked with him verse fourteen. And Jacob set up
12:58
a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of
13:03
stone. And he poured a drink offering thereon. And he poured oil thereon
13:09
verse fifteen. And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with
13:13
him, Bethel. Jacob and his retinue, having safely arrived at Bethel,
13:20
we are here told what passed there Numeral one. There he built an altar
13:26
Verse seven, and no doubt offered sacrifice upon it, perhaps the tenth of
13:31
his cattle, according to his vow, I will give the tenth unto thee.
13:37
With these sacrifices, he joined praises for former mercies, particularly that which
13:45
the side of the place brought afresh to his remembrance. And he added prayers
13:52
for the continuance of God's favors to him and his family. And he called
13:56
the place that is the altar El Bethel, the God of Bethel. As
14:05
when he made a thankful acknowledgment of the honor God had lately done him in
14:09
calling him Israel, he worshiped God by the name of El elohe Israel.
14:18
So now that he was making a grateful recognition of God's former favor to him
14:24
at Bethel, he worships God by the name of El Bethel, the God
14:31
of Bethel, because there God appeared to him. Note the comfort which the
14:37
saints have in holy ordinances is not so much from Bethel, the house of
14:43
God, as from El Bethel, the God of the house. The ordinances
14:50
are but empty things if we do not meet with God in them Numeral two.
14:56
There he buried Deborah, Becca's nurse, verse eight. We have reason
15:03
to think that Jacob, after he came to Canaan, while his family dwelt
15:07
near see Cham, went himself it is likely often to visit his father Isaac
15:15
at Hebron. Rebecca probably was dead, but her old nurse, of whom
15:22
mention is made Chapter twenty four, verse fifty nine, survived her, and
15:28
Jacob took her to his family to be a companion to his wives, her
15:33
countrywomen, and an instructor to his children. While they were at Bethel,
15:39
she died, and died lamented, so much lamented that the oak under which
15:46
she was buried was called Alon buccuth, the oak of weeping. Note one,
15:52
Old servants in a family that have in their time been faithful and useful
15:58
ought to be respected. Honor was done to this nurse and her death by
16:04
Jacob's family, though she was not related to them, and though she was
16:08
aged. Former services in such a case must be remembered. Two. We
16:15
do not know where death may meet us, perhaps at Bethel, the house
16:19
of God. Therefore let us be always ready. Number three. Family afflictions
16:26
may come even when family reformation and religion are on foot. Therefore, rejoice
16:33
with trembling numeral three. There God appear to him verse nine, verse nine,
16:41
to own his altar, to answer to the name by which he had
16:45
called him, the God of Bethel, verse seven, and to comfort him
16:51
under his affliction verse eight. Note God will appear to those in a way
16:56
of grace that attend on him in a way of duty. Here one he
17:03
confirmed the change of his name verse ten. It was done before by the
17:07
angel that wrestled with him Chapter thirty two, verse twenty eight. And here
17:14
it was ratified before the divine majesty or Sechinaw that appeared to him. There.
17:21
It was to encourage him against the fear of Esau, here against the
17:26
fear of the Canaanites, who can be too hard for Israel, a prince
17:30
with God. It is below those who are thus dignified to droop and despond.
17:37
Two he renewed and ratified the covenant with him by the name El Shadai,
17:45
I Am God, Almighty God All Sufficient. Verse eleven. Able to
17:52
make good the promise in due time, and to support THEE and provide for
17:56
THEE in the meantime. Two things are prompt must him, which we have
18:00
met with often before. One that he should be the father of a great
18:07
nation, great in number, a company of nations shall be of thee.
18:12
Every tribe of Israel was a nation, and all the twelve a company of
18:17
nations, great in honor and power. King shall come out of thy loins.
18:23
Two that he should be the master of a good land Verse twelve,
18:29
described by the grandees Abraham and Isaac, to whom it was promised, not
18:37
by the occupants, the Canaanites, in whose possession it now was. The
18:42
land that was given to Abraham and Isaac is here entailed on Jacob and his
18:48
seed. He shall not have children without an estate, which is often the
18:53
case of the poor, nor an estate without children, which is often the
18:59
grief of the rich. But both these two promises had a spiritual signification,
19:06
of which we may suppose Jacob himself had some notion, though not so clear
19:11
and distinct as we now have. For without doubt, Christ is the promised
19:18
seed, and Heaven is the promised land. The former is the foundation,
19:23
and the latter the topstone of all God's favors. Three. He then went
19:30
up from him and from over him in some visible display of glory, which
19:37
had hovered over him while he talked with him. Verse thirteen. Note the
19:44
sweetest communions the saints have with God in this world are short and transient,
19:51
and soon have an end. Our vision of God in heaven will be everlasting.
19:57
There we shall be ever with the life Lord. It is not so
20:02
here numeral four. There Jacob erected a memorial of this. Verse fourteen one
20:11
he set up a pillar. When he was going to padam Ram. He
20:15
set up for a pillar that stone on which he had laid his head.
20:21
This was agreeable enough to his low condition and his hasty flight. But now
20:26
he took time to erect one more stately, more distinguishable and durable, probably
20:33
placing that stone in it in token of his intending it for a sacred memorial
20:40
all his communion with God. He poured oil and the other ingredients of a
20:45
drink, offering upon it. His vow was, this stone shall be God's
20:51
house, that is, shall be set up for his honor as houses to
20:56
the praise of their builders. And here he performs it, transferring it to
21:02
God by anointing it. Two, he confirmed the name he had formerly given
21:07
to the place verse fifteen, Bethel, the House of God. Yet this
21:14
very place afterwards lost the honor of its name and became beth a van,
21:21
a house of iniquity. For here it was that Jeroboem set up with one
21:26
of his calves. It is impossible for the best man to entail upon a
21:30
place so much as the profession and form of religion. Death of Rachel b.
21:38
C. Seventeen thirty two, verse sixteen. And they journeyed from Bethel,
21:45
and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath. And Rachel
21:49
travailed, and she had hard labor verse seventeen. And it came to pass
21:56
when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said, unto her fear,
22:00
not thou shalt have this son, also verse eighteen, And it came
22:06
to pass as her soul was in departing, for she died, that she
22:11
called his name Benoni, but his father called him Benjamin verse nineteen. And
22:18
Rachel died and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is beth Lehem,
22:26
verse twenty. And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave, that is
22:30
a pillar of Rachel's grave. Unto this day we have here the story of
22:37
the death of Rachel, the beloffed wife of Jacob. One. She fell
22:42
in travail by the way, not able to reach Bethlehem, the next town,
22:48
though they were near it. So suddenly does pain sometimes come upon a
22:53
woman in travail, which she cannot escape or put off. We may suppose
23:00
Jacob had soon a tent up convenient enough for her reception. Two. Her
23:06
pains were violent. She had hard labor, harder than usual. This was
23:11
the effect of sin. Chapter three, verse sixteen. Note human life begins
23:18
with sorrow, and the roses of its joy are surrounded with thorns. Three.
23:26
The midwife encouraged her verse seventeen. No doubt she had her midwife with
23:32
her ready at hand. Yet that would not secure her. Rachel had said,
23:37
when she bore Joseph, God shall add another son, which now the
23:42
midwife remembers and tells her her words were made good. Yet this did not
23:48
avail to keep up her spirits. Unless God command away, fear no one
23:55
else can. He only says, of one having authority, fear not.
24:00
We are apt in extreme perils to comfort ourselves and our friends with the hopes
24:07
of the temporal deliverance, in which we may be disappointed. We had better
24:12
found our comforts on that which cannot fail us, the hope of eternal life.
24:19
For her travail was to be the life of the child, but to
24:25
her own death. Note though the pains and perils of child bearing were introduced
24:30
by sin, yet they have sometimes been fatal to very holy women, who,
24:37
though not saved in child bearing, are saved through it with an everlasting
24:44
salvation. Rachel had passionately said, give me children, or else I die.
24:51
And now that she had children, for this was her second, she
24:56
died. Her dying is here called the departing of her soul. Note the
25:02
death of the body is but the departure of the soul to the world of
25:07
spirits. Five. Her dying lips called her new born son Venoni, the
25:12
son of my sorrow. And many a son not born in such hard labor,
25:19
yet proves the son of his parent's sorrow and the heaviness of her that
25:23
bore him. Children are enough the sorrow of their poor mothers in the breeding,
25:30
bearing and nursing of them. They should, therefore, when they grow
25:33
up study to be their joy, and so, if possible, to make
25:40
them some amends. But Jacob, because he would not renew the sorrowful remembrance
25:47
of his mother's death, every time he called his son by his name,
25:52
changed his name and called him Benjamin, the son of my right hand,
25:57
that is very dear to me. Set on my right hand for a blessing
26:03
the support of my age, like the staff in my right hand. Six.
26:10
Jacob buried her near the place where she died, and she died in
26:15
child bed. It was convenient to bury her quickly, and therefore he did
26:18
not bring her to the burying place of his family. If the soul be
26:23
at rest after death, it matters little where the body lies in the place
26:30
where the tree falls there. Let it be No mention is made of the
26:36
mourning that was at her death, because that might easily be taken for granted.
26:41
Jacob, no doubt, was a true mourner. Note great affliction sometimes
26:48
befalls immediately after great comforts. Lest Jacob should be lifted up with the visions
26:56
of the almighty with which he was honored, was sent as a thorn in
27:00
the flesh to humble him. Those that enjoy the favors peculiar to the children
27:07
of God, must yet expect the troubles that are common to the children of
27:14
men. Deborah, who had she lived, would have been a comfort to
27:18
Rachel in her extremity, died but a little before. Note when death comes
27:25
into a family, it often strikes double God by it speaks once, yea
27:30
twice. The Jewish writers say the death of Deborah and Rachel was to expiate
27:37
the murder of the Sichamites, occasioned by Dinah, a daughter of the family.
27:45
Seven. Jacob set up a pill upon her grave, so that it
27:49
was known long after to be Rachel's sepulcher Fir Samuel, chapter ten, verse
27:57
two. And Providence so ordered it that this place afterwards fell in the lot
28:03
of Benjamin. Jacob set up a pillar in remembrance of his joys verse fourteen.
28:11
And here he sets up one in remembrance of his sorrows. For so
28:15
it may be of use to ourselves to keep both in mind, so it
28:21
may be of use to others to transmit the memorials of both. The Church
28:26
long afterwards owned that what God said to Jacob at Bethel, both by his
28:33
word and by his rod, he intended for their instructions Hoosia, chapter one
28:38
hundred and twelve, verse four. There he spoke with us the disgrace of
28:45
Reuben b. C. Seventeen sixteen, verse twenty one. And Israel journeyed
28:52
and spread his tent beyond the Tower of Edar verse twenty two. And it
28:57
came to pass when israe Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and
29:03
lay with Bilh, his father's concubine, And Israel heard it. Now.
29:08
The sons of Jacob were twelve verse twenty three, the sons of Leah Reuben,
29:15
Jacob's first born, and Simeon and Levi and Judah and Ishikar and Zebulen
29:22
verse twenty four. The sons of Rachel, Joseph and Benjamin verse twenty five.
29:30
And the sons of Bilh Rachel's handmaid Dan and Naphthali verse twenty six.
29:37
And the sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid Gad and Asher. These are the
29:44
sons of Jacob which were born to him in Padan Oram verse twenty seven.
29:49
And Jacob came unto Isaac, his father, unto memory, unto the city
29:55
of Arbah, which is hebron where Abraham and Isaac sojourn verse twenty eight.
30:02
And the days of Isaac were ane hundred and fourscore years verse twenty nine.
30:07
And Isaac gave up the ghosts and died, and was gathered unto his people,
30:14
being old and full of days, and his sons Esau and Jacob buried
30:18
him. Here is one Jacob's removal verse twenty one. He also as his
30:26
father's sojourn in the land of Promise, as in a strange country, and
30:32
was not long in a place immediately after the story of Rachel's death. He
30:37
is here called Israel verse twenty one and twenty two, and not often so
30:44
afterwards. The Jews say, the historian does him this honor here because he
30:51
bore that affliction with such admirable patience and submission to Providence. Note those are
30:59
Israel's, indeed, princes with God that support the government of their own passions.
31:06
He that has this rule over his own spirit is better than the mighty
31:11
Israel, a prince with God yet dwells intents. The city is reserved for
31:17
him in the other world. Two. The sin of Reuben a piece of
31:22
abominable wickedness. It was that he was guilty of verse twenty two. That
31:29
very sin which the apostle says first corintheis five verse one. It is not
31:37
so much as named among the gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.
31:42
It is said to have been when Israel dwelt in that land, as
31:48
if he were then absent from his family, which might be the unhappy occasion
31:53
of these disorders. Though perhaps Bilhah was the greater criminal, and it is
32:00
probable was abandoned by Jacob for it. Yet Reuben's crime was so provoking that
32:07
for it he lost his birthright and blessing. Chapter forty nine, verse four.
32:14
The first born is not always the best nor the most promising. This
32:20
was Reuben's sin, but it was Jacob's affliction. And what a sore affliction
32:25
it was is intimated in a little compass. And Israel heard it no more
32:32
is said. That is enough. He heard it with the utmost grief and
32:37
shame, horror and displeasure. Reuben thought to conceal it, that his father
32:44
should never hear of it. But those that promise themselves secrecy and sin are
32:49
generally disappointed. A bird of the air carries the voice three. A complete
32:55
list of the sons of Jacob, now that Benjamin the younger was born.
33:00
This is the first time we have the names of these heads of the twelve
33:06
tribes together. Afterwards we find them very often spoken of and enumerated, even
33:13
to the end of the Bible Revelations Chapter seven, verse four, Chapter twenty
33:17
one, Verse twelve. Four. The visit which Jacob made to his father
33:22
Isaac at Hebron, We may suppose he had visited him before since his return,
33:30
for he sorely longed after his father's house, but never till now brought
33:37
his family to settle with him or near him Verse twenty seven. Probably he
33:43
did this now upon the death of Rebecca, by which Isaac was left solitary
33:50
and not disposed to marry again. Five. The age and death of Isaac
33:55
are here recorded, though it appears by computation that he died not till many
34:01
years after Joseph was sold into Egypt, and much about the time that he
34:08
was preferred there. Isaac, a mild, quiet man, lived the longest
34:15
of all the patriarchs, for he was one hundred eighty years old. Abraham
34:21
was about one hundred and seventy five. Isaac lived about forty years after he
34:25
made his will. Chapter twenty seven, verse two. We shall not die
34:30
an hour the sooner, but abundantly the better for our timely setting our heart
34:37
and house in order. Particular notices taken of the amicable agreement of Esau and
34:44
Jacob in solemnizing their father's funeral verse twenty nine, to show how wonderfully God
34:52
had chained Esau's mind since he vowed his brother's murder immediately after his father's death.
35:00
Chapter twenty seven, verse forty one. Note God has many ways of
35:06
preventing bad men from doing the mischief they intended. He can either tie their
35:13
hands or turn their hearts. And of Chapter thirty five,
