- 0:28Good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30Continuing our little series on stress today.
- 0:34And today we are going to talk about pivoting.
- 0:38So what do I mean? When I say pivot I mean when you
- 0:41find yourself in that stressful situation, which is going to
- 0:44happen, let's face. It is going to happen.
- 0:46There's no question about it. You have to be able to Pivot if
- 0:50you want to be able to move yourself through it, and not
- 0:54feel like you're adjusting this swill pit if you will of being
- 0:59stuck. Pivoting is an art and it
- 1:03combines a few different tools. When you break down the process,
- 1:06when someone says, oh, you got to learn to Pivot.
- 1:08Really, what you have to do is the very first thing is.
- 1:12Again, you got to come back to awareness and you guys must get
- 1:15so sick of hearing me say this, but it's really what the Crux of
- 1:18the whole thing is you have to be able to get back to that
- 1:22piece where you can be ultimately aware.
- 1:26So critically aware of what's going on around you so that you
- 1:29can You know, decide what your next play is.
- 1:32But you can't do that if you don't ultimately have the
- 1:36awareness to know, you're even stuck in the spot.
- 1:39So, awareness is number one. Number two is, you've got to be
- 1:42able to look at a situation and say, this is not where I want to
- 1:46be, and I don't like this. I don't, I'm not going to be
- 1:49resourceful and I think that's for me.
- 1:51That's one of my most important distinctions for myself, is that
- 1:55I say, I am not going to be resourceful here.
- 1:57If I stay in this state, if I stay in this, Place in my head.
- 2:01There is no way that I'm going to be able to be resourceful in
- 2:05the process. I can assure you that your
- 2:09resourcefulness goes down immensely when you are under
- 2:12stress. Now we may think that we
- 2:15operate, great under stress. Can't tell you how many times in
- 2:17my career. I've heard someone say to me,
- 2:19well I do really well under stress and I say no, you don't
- 2:23do really well under stress. You have just learned to make
- 2:26things work under stress and that is Not necessarily doing
- 2:32really well. All that is is being, you know,
- 2:35adaptive you've just said, okay, I know I can I can do well under
- 2:40this but it's not really the best you can be and if you stop
- 2:42and think about it, it's really not the best.
- 2:45You can be a lot of people have. I am not one of them, I do not.
- 2:50I know, like I did not grow up, putting myself in stressful
- 2:54situations just to get through them, i.e. taking exams, a lot
- 2:59of people believe. Oh, well, I'm under pressure.
- 3:01I do really well. You know, you might get the job
- 3:05done. But that doesn't mean you're
- 3:06doing it. The best you can do it.
- 3:08It doesn't mean you're going to remember anything you studied.
- 3:10It doesn't remember mean, you're going to benefit from that
- 3:14pressure that you put yourself under.
- 3:16It just means that you've been adaptive.
- 3:19You found a way to make it work, but in this case does not work
- 3:23well and I don't suggest that you go about it and do it.
- 3:25Okay, so just keep that in mind. Pivoting also means number three
- 3:32that you recognize, there's an alternative method to take on.
- 3:38So you can say, ask yourself a better question.
- 3:40What's another way? I can handle this situation?
- 3:43What's another way I can show up?
- 3:45What's another way? I can make something happen and
- 3:48if you don't ask yourself that question, you won't find the
- 3:52answers because you'll just go right back to the Adaptive
- 3:55behaviors you created before. So it's really, really important
- 3:58that you ask the right questions because when asking the right
- 4:02questions, you will get better, stronger, different answers.
- 4:06And it's really important that you do, so.
- 4:08So you have those questions right at hand?
- 4:12Have those questions ready for yourself, so that you can make
- 4:16it work, so that you can get something that you're really
- 4:18considering a Wrong direction to go in available to you.
- 4:25Now again, I say it with such an emphasis because when we are
- 4:30under stress, we don't always think clearly.
- 4:32So we have to think about these things ahead of time, we have to
- 4:36have the ideas ahead of time so that when we are technically out
- 4:41of stress, we come up with our ideas and then they're available
- 4:45to us when we are in stress, if we try to come up with ideas in
- 4:48stress, they just tend to be crap.
- 4:51Eid has quite honestly that's why people end up in prison.
- 4:54That's why people end up doing stupid things.
- 4:56That's why we go for, you know, short-term Solutions just to
- 5:01relieve some of the pain if you will, but it doesn't work
- 5:05because they're not. Well, thought out remember when
- 5:07emotions go up intelligence goes down and there's just no way
- 5:10around that you don't think clearly when that happens so
- 5:14please take the time to have some you know prepared thoughts
- 5:19on this. What's another way I can handle
- 5:21it? Another person that I can bring
- 5:22in, have your short list of 1 2 3, ready so that you can work
- 5:28your way through it, right? In those moments that it's
- 5:30necessary and you don't keep going back to the same things
- 5:35and you really can pivot on a dime and say no.
- 5:38So I will tell you, one of my favorite ones for this for me is
- 5:41I will say okay I need like 10 minutes to collect my thoughts.
- 5:45So for me, that 10-minute thought collection is just
- 5:49sitting down and writing everything.
- 5:51On a piece of paper, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
- 5:53And I usually divide it, and I usually put it in list and I
- 5:56usually sit there and say, okay, here's what's, here's what's
- 5:59happening? That's not great.
- 6:01Here's what's happening, that irritating me, here's what's
- 6:05happening that? Stressing me.
- 6:06However, you want to do it. Then you go over and say, okay,
- 6:09what could I what could possibly make this better?
- 6:11What are things that can make this better?
- 6:13Just do a brain dump, doesn't matter.
- 6:15If you don't know how to make them happen, just do a brain
- 6:17dump of something that could possibly make this better and
- 6:20then You can go, okay. Is there a way that I can ask to
- 6:25get this over to the next place? Is there a way that I can ask
- 6:28for help? Is there a way that I can put
- 6:29somebody else in this with me? That can help me?
- 6:32And if there's not, you still keep looking for a solution, you
- 6:37don't give up, but you don't take on that immediate emotional
- 6:42stress of it, trying to make it work that in itself is never a
- 6:47good idea. Never a good idea.
- 6:50So hopefully this makes sense. Hopefully you're going to be
- 6:54able to work yourself through it, a little bit and you're
- 6:56going to Pivot on a dime and get yourself back to at least a
- 7:00place of neutral where you can do a brain dump, think about it.
- 7:03And say, okay, there have to be other ways to handle this but
- 7:06staying in that heightened stress point is not going to
- 7:09help. Okay, so go out there today,
- 7:12make your list pivot pivot pivot.
- 7:15Don't stay in the same place and I will see you tomorrow.
- 7:17Bye.
