- 0:03Speaker 1: Smell us Now, lady, Welcome to Meet Eater Trivia podcast.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Welcome to Meet Eater Radio Live. It's eleven am Mountain
- 0:29Speaker 2: Time on January ninth, and we'd live for Meat Eater
- 0:32Speaker 2: HQ and Bosman Montana. I'm your host, Spencer new Art,
- 0:36Speaker 2: joined today by Brodie Henderson and Giannis Boutellis. On today's show,
- 0:40Speaker 2: we'll interview Matt Daniels about a seven year quest to
- 0:43Speaker 2: track down the mount of his dad's record book Deer.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Then we've got show and tell, followed by a hot
- 0:49Speaker 2: tip off, and finally we'll talk to Bend Attamanti about
- 0:52Speaker 2: an el khunt where four arrows wind up in the
- 0:55Speaker 2: same bowl, forty four of them. We're gonna get to
- 0:58Speaker 2: the whole thing at the end. It's a wild, over
- 1:00Speaker 2: the counter experience that I think few have had, but
- 1:04Speaker 2: most have probably had nightmares about how'd you boys spend
- 1:07Speaker 2: Christmas break.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Eating, drinking, hanging out with fun people, getting outside, living
- 1:14Speaker 1: the life.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Oh okay, pretty much.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Yeah, it's the best.
- 1:17Speaker 2: You probably describe yourself that way anytime, not just Christmas
- 1:20Speaker 2: break right.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I feel like I'm pretty lucky, pretty fortunate, as I
- 1:24Speaker 1: think everybody in this room should feel the same way.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Good on you, Yanni. How about you, bro? Do you
- 1:28Speaker 2: doing anything exciting when coming to the office.
- 1:30Speaker 3: They've got a lot of bird hunting in, which is nice.
- 1:32Speaker 3: It's kind of a bittersweet time of year because it's
- 1:34Speaker 3: like the end of hunting season, at least for those
- 1:37Speaker 3: of us that aren't Yiannis that just get to hunt
- 1:39Speaker 3: all your life.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Yeah, this is the time of year when I get
- 1:42Speaker 2: very motivated about finding my next permission, about finding my
- 1:45Speaker 2: next yh Yeah.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:47Speaker 2: And I'm like, I'm just thirsty for more of that,
- 1:50Speaker 2: and I can't do it.
- 1:52Speaker 3: It'll be Turkey season before you know it.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Yanny. You just had a successful haunt though. Yesterday, as
- 1:57Speaker 2: we sit here talking about not haunting anymore.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I did mingus my buddy Jake and piping Helen. Uh.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I actually went up one king and walk this track
- 2:11Speaker 1: for a half a mile. I keep looking at it.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I'm like, so, bitch, it's got to be a fox.
- 2:16Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm not seeing the claws, which would tell
- 2:18Speaker 1: me it's a fox or a coyo, you know. But
- 2:21Speaker 1: at the same time, I can't catch a leading toe
- 2:25Speaker 1: to really tell me that it's a bobcat. I keep
- 2:28Speaker 1: looking at it.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Let it narrow down to those three things.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Though I was thinking fox or bobcat because it was
- 2:34Speaker 1: pretty small.
- 2:35Speaker 3: It is a deep snow, making it like hard to
- 2:37Speaker 3: tell you.
- 2:37Speaker 1: No, it was on the trail, and sometimes you know
- 2:40Speaker 1: when you're out not under trees. It was a couple
- 2:43Speaker 1: of inches, but just under the trees, it might have
- 2:45Speaker 1: been just a skiff. So I got all versions of
- 2:47Speaker 1: this track because I walked. He was on the trail
- 2:48Speaker 1: for half a mile. Turns out it was a she
- 2:51Speaker 1: and uh. Luckily I took a picture and sent it
- 2:54Speaker 1: to Jake because we hadn't hooked up yet, and I'm like,
- 2:58Speaker 1: what do you think fox? You know, the picture doesn't
- 3:00Speaker 1: go through and he keeps texting me back I didn't
- 3:02Speaker 1: get the picture. I didn't get the picture. I'm like,
- 3:04Speaker 1: I think it's a fox. So I like, check another
- 3:06Speaker 1: canyon and then I drive to meet him and a
- 3:09Speaker 1: separate canyon. Right when I get there, the picture finally
- 3:12Speaker 1: goes through and he's like, dude, bobcat, let's go back
- 3:15Speaker 1: to there. I'm like, all right, let's go.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Do they have the same kind of gate Fox and Bobcat?
- 3:21Speaker 1: No, it's more like a lion. You know where they
- 3:24Speaker 1: direct registered right where they place each pad in the
- 3:28Speaker 1: next pad.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Are there are there any other clues besides a track
- 3:32Speaker 2: that you could come across, Like what if you found
- 3:35Speaker 2: some crap? Would that give you any clues?
- 3:37Speaker 4: Or no? Mmm, not me?
- 3:39Speaker 1: Maybe maybe some other expert. Yeah, but no, it's all
- 3:42Speaker 1: in the track and the gate and the maybe the yeah,
- 3:47Speaker 1: the length of the gate, the stride. So you guys
- 3:49Speaker 1: go back, but yeah, we go back there and cut
- 3:53Speaker 1: the dogs loose on it and they run it for
- 3:57Speaker 1: I don't know, not far four hundred yards and they
- 4:00Speaker 1: actually went back towards the truck and they were basically
- 4:03Speaker 1: three hundred yards above the above the truck, and they
- 4:07Speaker 1: treated it all together, which I explained in the post yesterday,
- 4:10Speaker 1: I put on the Instagram that Mingus has hasn't caught
- 4:14Speaker 1: a bobcat yet on his own, and it's a big deal.
- 4:20Speaker 1: They're a lot harder to catch than a lion, much
- 4:23Speaker 1: much harder. I can explain if you like. But so
- 4:26Speaker 1: that hasn't happened yet. Last time we caught a bobcat
- 4:29Speaker 1: it was again with Jake and these same dogs, and
- 4:32Speaker 1: I've talked about this before they're superstars. I mean, it's
- 4:35Speaker 1: like when you go out with them, you're getting to play,
- 4:38Speaker 1: you know, pickup ball on your team. You've got Lebron
- 4:40Speaker 1: and MJ. And last time Mingus was five to ten
- 4:46Speaker 1: minutes late getting to the tree. In a way, it
- 4:50Speaker 1: was good because he instead of me tooing and hearing
- 4:54Speaker 1: the dogs barking, treed and picking up his head and
- 4:56Speaker 1: running over there and going.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Yeah, you got to find a better term for that,
- 5:00Speaker 2: and me too carry on.
- 5:03Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Though?
- 5:04Speaker 2: Huh?
- 5:04Speaker 1: He keeps to the track and works the track all
- 5:07Speaker 1: the way to the tree and then goes all right, yeah, sweet,
- 5:09Speaker 1: I'm here too. Well, yesterday they according to the GPS,
- 5:13Speaker 1: they all got there together. They all treed together. And
- 5:16Speaker 1: so I feel like I could give Mingus credit for
- 5:19Speaker 1: like a legit bobcat catch.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yeah, let's officially award that one to Mingus. Yeah, and
- 5:24Speaker 2: then you shot it.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I shot it about a fifteen pound female beautiful and yeah,
- 5:30Speaker 1: Jake's gonna come over night help me tube skin it.
- 5:32Speaker 2: How often are you passing on bobcats when you treat one? Never?
- 5:36Speaker 1: I we haven't treed one now, Jake, who hunts a
- 5:40Speaker 1: lot more than I do. I don't know how many
- 5:42Speaker 1: he's treed. He said he's only killed one this winter,
- 5:45Speaker 1: but I'm guessing he's probably treed ten others and he's
- 5:48Speaker 1: let him all go because they were probably either females
- 5:51Speaker 1: or too small. He's looking to kill mature male.
- 5:54Speaker 2: And Phil has now pulled up the video, oh, of
- 5:58Speaker 2: the end of the hunt.
- 5:59Speaker 1: No, this is the mountain lion hunt from the week prior. Okay, sorry, honest, No,
- 6:04Speaker 1: that's okay.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Do you ever get a bobcat or anything up a
- 6:07Speaker 2: tree and you just can't find it up there because
- 6:09Speaker 2: it's getting from view.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Funny you say that, especially with bobcats. And I found
- 6:14Speaker 1: that out with like three weeks ago when my wife
- 6:17Speaker 1: and I went we treed a mountain lion, a female
- 6:20Speaker 1: in her kitten. The kitten was a couple hundred yards
- 6:22Speaker 1: away in a different tree. And the thing they have,
- 6:26Speaker 1: it's a problem with mingus because he trees him on
- 6:29Speaker 1: the scent. Right. He's like, I know they went to
- 6:31Speaker 1: this tree, track goes up this tree, but I can't
- 6:34Speaker 1: see him. He trees hard for about an hour just
- 6:37Speaker 1: on that scent, ok. And then when he can't find it,
- 6:40Speaker 1: he starts to get lose confidence and he wants to
- 6:43Speaker 1: be treeing or wants to be running a track or something,
- 6:46Speaker 1: so he starts running the track back out and searching
- 6:50Speaker 1: coming back to the track. So when we went to
- 6:52Speaker 1: the kittens tree, I'm walking up to it, going, man,
- 6:55Speaker 1: he slick treed me, which is the term meaning that
- 6:57Speaker 1: your dog is barking treed, but there's nothing in it.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I had to get all the way around the tree
- 7:03Speaker 1: and get eye level with that kitten until I could
- 7:05Speaker 1: find it. But I was able to do that and
- 7:08Speaker 1: only be fifteen feet from it. This bobcat yesterday. It
- 7:12Speaker 1: took Jake and I walking around in circles for probably
- 7:15Speaker 1: fifteen to twenty minutes until we finally spotted it.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Did the dog see it the whole time?
- 7:20Speaker 1: They never saw it, and so they kind of had
- 7:23Speaker 1: done before we got there. They had left the tree,
- 7:26Speaker 1: tried to thinking that there's must be a different out,
- 7:29Speaker 1: so they ran back on the same trail, kind of
- 7:32Speaker 1: searched around for a little bit one hundred yards away
- 7:34Speaker 1: and then said nope, it's this way, and they came
- 7:36Speaker 1: back to the tree. Eventually, what happens if they there
- 7:39Speaker 1: long enough and if you have the right wind, scent
- 7:43Speaker 1: thermal conditions, the scent from that animal will drop down
- 7:47Speaker 1: and he's thirty yards up there. I mean, he's, you know,
- 7:49Speaker 1: ninety feet up in a tree way up there. But
- 7:52Speaker 1: that scent drops down and all of a sudden it
- 7:54Speaker 1: hits them. So they'll be kind of searching around on
- 7:56Speaker 1: the ground a little bit like, yeah, I don't know,
- 7:59Speaker 1: I don't know, and then all son, that centle hit him,
- 8:01Speaker 1: and all three of them boo boo boom, you know,
- 8:03Speaker 1: just blow up on it. And then they'll tree hard
- 8:06Speaker 1: for fifteen minutes. But if again, if this, if the
- 8:09Speaker 1: wind changes a little bit, they don't. But yeah I did,
- 8:13Speaker 1: and it was snowing, and I realized too the scope
- 8:16Speaker 1: I had it it was it wouldn't focus close enough,
- 8:20Speaker 1: like it wasn't a rim fire scope, and so I
- 8:23Speaker 1: couldn't get the parallax to focus at like thirty yards.
- 8:27Speaker 1: So that made it a little bit difficult. But ended
- 8:29Speaker 1: up with a good shot and one shot killed it.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Okay, working your way up to being not mj or
- 8:34Speaker 2: Lebron but nkole Jokic.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Maybe mingus Yeah, yeah, he's doing good.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Someday soon, all right, joining us on the line. First
- 8:43Speaker 2: is Matt Daniels, who went on a seventy year quest
- 8:46Speaker 2: to track down the amount of his dad's record book
- 8:49Speaker 2: White Tail. Matt, Welcome to the show. Hell, go on,
- 8:53Speaker 2: guys up, Matt. First thing, tell us about your dad
- 8:57Speaker 2: killing this deer?
- 8:59Speaker 5: Well, well, so my dad started bohunting back in the
- 9:02Speaker 5: early nineties and never was much of a trophy hunter,
- 9:06Speaker 5: didn't really care about the size of the antlers provide
- 9:11Speaker 5: for the family. And he happened to go into a
- 9:15Speaker 5: property one day and climbed up in a cedar tree,
- 9:18Speaker 5: was just sitting on a ceedar limb with his bow
- 9:19Speaker 5: in his lap, and that thing came walking through.
- 9:23Speaker 2: That's amazing. And this this happened in what nineteen ninety five? Correct?
- 9:27Speaker 5: Ninety correct?
- 9:29Speaker 2: Okay, So your dad he recognizes this as a big buck,
- 9:32Speaker 2: but maybe doesn't understand the full scope of what just happened.
- 9:35Speaker 2: So he does get the deer mounted, right, Yeah, he did,
- 9:39Speaker 2: he got that originally. Okay, So he has it mounted,
- 9:42Speaker 2: kills it in nineteen ninety five, and then tell us
- 9:44Speaker 2: what happens in two thousand.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Yeah, so somewhere in two thousand, just still before I
- 9:50Speaker 5: was born, he ended up selling it, selling them out
- 9:53Speaker 5: to a collector.
- 9:56Speaker 2: And then I before you were born, At what point
- 10:00Speaker 2: do you find out that this deer ever existed and
- 10:02Speaker 2: that your dad killed this thing?
- 10:05Speaker 5: I think it was twenty seventeen. He pulled a polaroid
- 10:08Speaker 5: picture out of his dresser door and was showing it
- 10:11Speaker 5: to me, and that was the first time I'd ever
- 10:13Speaker 5: seen any pictures of it. And so there I started
- 10:18Speaker 5: asking him, like, man, what did I think score? Because
- 10:21Speaker 5: you can tell from the picture that's just a giant deer.
- 10:24Speaker 5: And he had never had it scored until the person
- 10:27Speaker 5: that he sold it to came and scored it, and
- 10:29Speaker 5: he remembered it being two hundred inches neck and I
- 10:33Speaker 5: was like, there's no way, like that's that's a state
- 10:35Speaker 5: record if that's the case, you know. So I took
- 10:38Speaker 5: that picture, posted it on a Facebook and a Kansas
- 10:42Speaker 5: hunting a fishing group, just asking, you know, does anybody
- 10:45Speaker 5: know about this deer? And within twenty four hours I
- 10:49Speaker 5: was in contact with the person who owned it.
- 10:52Speaker 2: And so twenty four hours later you're talking to the
- 10:55Speaker 2: current owner of the mount What happened then?
- 11:00Speaker 5: Yeah, So from there I reached out to him, sent
- 11:04Speaker 5: him a copy of that picture to prove that it
- 11:08Speaker 5: was the same year. And from there we actually mailed
- 11:11Speaker 5: handwritten letters back and forth for a little while, kind
- 11:14Speaker 5: of discussing it if you would ever think about selling it,
- 11:19Speaker 5: And he finally got back with me on that and
- 11:22Speaker 5: told me he'd sell it back to us, but the
- 11:24Speaker 5: price was right at forty thousand.
- 11:27Speaker 2: And do you know how he acquired the buck? What
- 11:30Speaker 2: was the chain of events that wound up with this
- 11:34Speaker 2: antler collector? I think he was in Maine, right. How
- 11:36Speaker 2: did you wind up that he ever had this thing?
- 11:39Speaker 5: Yeah, so, as far as I know it, it had
- 11:42Speaker 5: been sold over the years a couple of different times,
- 11:45Speaker 5: and he ended up buying it from another collector.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Okay, so he offers to sell it to you for
- 11:52Speaker 2: forty thousand dollars. When he said forty thousand dollars, did
- 11:55Speaker 2: you expect that to be the price? And did he
- 11:58Speaker 2: sort of act like I'm doing you guys a favor
- 12:01Speaker 2: by offering to sell it to you for forty thousand
- 12:04Speaker 2: or is that what he would have sold it to
- 12:05Speaker 2: me or Yanni as well?
- 12:08Speaker 5: I mean, he made it seem like he was only
- 12:09Speaker 5: going to sell it to us because he believed you know,
- 12:12Speaker 5: it belonged to us since my dad was a person
- 12:14Speaker 5: harvested it. But that price at that time, it was
- 12:18Speaker 5: a heart shock.
- 12:19Speaker 4: You know.
- 12:19Speaker 5: I was only sixty years old at that time, so
- 12:22Speaker 5: forty thousand dollars to me just sounded completely impossible.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Yeah, but you do manage to scrape a little bit
- 12:28Speaker 2: of money together.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Right, Yeah.
- 12:31Speaker 5: So I kind of kept everybody up to date on
- 12:33Speaker 5: the post on Facebook because there was a lot of
- 12:35Speaker 5: people following along with the story, and a lot of
- 12:39Speaker 5: guys were telling me, you know, they were willing to
- 12:41Speaker 5: throw in twenty bucks, fifty bucks, and they're like, why
- 12:43Speaker 5: don't you start to GoFundMe or something? And I was like,
- 12:46Speaker 5: there ain't no way, there's no point. But they talked
- 12:48Speaker 5: me into doing it, and I ended up raising about
- 12:50Speaker 5: fifteen thousand dollars towards.
- 12:52Speaker 2: It till fifteen thousand. Do you make a fifteen thousand
- 12:56Speaker 2: dollars offer at that point?
- 12:59Speaker 5: No, I mean the guy at the time that owned it,
- 13:02Speaker 5: he told me he wasn't gonna budget on that price.
- 13:05Speaker 5: So after a month or so of the gofund me
- 13:08Speaker 5: being up and everything kind of went stale, I came
- 13:11Speaker 5: to the real estate that that price wasn't gonna work out.
- 13:14Speaker 2: For me, Okay, And at that point, Matt, it gets
- 13:18Speaker 2: sold a second time while you're tracking this year, right, Yeah.
- 13:24Speaker 5: So when I reached back out to the current owner
- 13:26Speaker 5: at that time and told him, you know, that I
- 13:28Speaker 5: wasn't gonna be able to come up with the money,
- 13:30Speaker 5: he went ahead and sold it to another collector.
- 13:34Speaker 2: And what was it like dealing with that collector because
- 13:36Speaker 2: you sort of went through the same process again of
- 13:38Speaker 2: trying to buy it or trying to get a replica, right, yeah.
- 13:43Speaker 5: So I reached out to the new owner that just
- 13:47Speaker 5: purchased it, and he's a pretty well known tailor collector iiO,
- 13:52Speaker 5: and he didn't really want to work with me too much.
- 13:54Speaker 5: He confirmed that he did own it, sent me a
- 13:56Speaker 5: bunch of current pictures of it, which it was just
- 13:58Speaker 5: the skull cap at that time, and then I talked
- 14:02Speaker 5: to him about getting a replica. He kind of said
- 14:06Speaker 5: it wasn't going to be a possibility. And I kind
- 14:09Speaker 5: of messaged him back and forth for a couple of years,
- 14:11Speaker 5: and he didn't never really want to help out too much.
- 14:15Speaker 2: So it feels like, again Matt has hit a dead end,
- 14:18Speaker 2: and you guys, should watch this episode of Media Radio
- 14:22Speaker 2: on YouTube because here's a spoiler. We can see the
- 14:25Speaker 2: mount in the background of Matt. So this antler collector
- 14:28Speaker 2: in Ohio now has it, but not for long and
- 14:31Speaker 2: it gets sold a third time during your pursuit.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Yep.
- 14:36Speaker 5: So after about two or three years of talking to
- 14:39Speaker 5: this he finally messaged me back one day and pretty
- 14:44Speaker 5: much that I don't own any more. Bass Pro has it.
- 14:48Speaker 5: So from there I'm thinking, well, maybe I'll at least
- 14:51Speaker 5: be able to see it every back in my life
- 14:54Speaker 5: at this time, So I started to try to reach
- 14:57Speaker 5: out to bass Pro and that was a that was
- 15:01Speaker 5: a task on it.
- 15:04Speaker 2: And so when bass Pro has it, do you know
- 15:07Speaker 2: what they were doing with it at that point? Like
- 15:09Speaker 2: where were they displaying it?
- 15:12Speaker 5: So I was under I was told it was supposed
- 15:15Speaker 5: to be on display at the Wonders of Wildlife at
- 15:19Speaker 5: their Springfield, Missouri headquarters, and I called that location. They
- 15:24Speaker 5: said they couldn't really release any information of what antlers
- 15:27Speaker 5: were on display there. So I had a couple buddies
- 15:30Speaker 5: that ended up going there and they kind of facetimed
- 15:33Speaker 5: me through the whole thing and it was not on display.
- 15:36Speaker 5: This was probably about six months after I was told
- 15:38Speaker 5: that it was supposed to be. So at this point,
- 15:42Speaker 5: I'm like, does bass Pro even actually have this rack?
- 15:45Speaker 5: You know, is a guy just lying to me whatnot?
- 15:49Speaker 2: How did how did you end up even tracking down
- 15:51Speaker 2: the right person to talk to at bass Pro?
- 15:56Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 15:56Speaker 5: So pretty much it was another You're like year and
- 16:00Speaker 5: a half or so calling location emails, the voicemails, and
- 16:07Speaker 5: I'd never got a response back. That pretty much just
- 16:11Speaker 5: spent you know, a few minutes on a you know,
- 16:16Speaker 5: every month, just calling and leaving a voicemail, sending another email,
- 16:20Speaker 5: and then just randomly this September, I got an email
- 16:24Speaker 5: back and I honestly thought it was a scam email,
- 16:27Speaker 5: but there was an email from a person with bas
- 16:29Speaker 5: Pro regarding information on this.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Yer Okay, and it must have been good news because
- 16:34Speaker 2: again this mount is sitting right behind you. What did
- 16:38Speaker 2: they have to say?
- 16:40Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 16:40Speaker 4: They so.
- 16:41Speaker 5: At first they just confirmed that they did own it,
- 16:43Speaker 5: and uh that the antlers were not on display and
- 16:49Speaker 5: the real rack not planned to be on display. I
- 16:52Speaker 5: don't really know find that, but they told me I
- 16:56Speaker 5: was able to get a replica and I would have
- 16:58Speaker 5: to work with handlers by Klaus. So they got me
- 17:05Speaker 5: in contact with that company and then from there I
- 17:08Speaker 5: just worked with them on getting a replica made.
- 17:11Speaker 2: And shortly thereafter the thing showed up at your front door.
- 17:15Speaker 5: Yep. Yeah, they definitely worked with me. I thank The
- 17:17Speaker 5: average time for for the replicas around three months to
- 17:20Speaker 5: four months, and I had it at my door and
- 17:22Speaker 5: find it.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Okay, So five weeks later he gets the rack. What
- 17:28Speaker 2: is the hide on the deer? You've you've obviously found
- 17:31Speaker 2: some other skin to wrap around this mount? What is that?
- 17:35Speaker 5: So once I found out that I was going to
- 17:37Speaker 5: get get a replica maid when when I found out
- 17:43Speaker 5: when I was going to get it? Now I was
- 17:44Speaker 5: on a mission for the mount, and uh, I thought
- 17:49Speaker 5: it would be really cool to use a kate from
- 17:51Speaker 5: a deer that I harvested on my dad's deer, just
- 17:54Speaker 5: sentimental reasons. So now I was out on a mission
- 17:57Speaker 5: to harvest a good mature deer to get a kate
- 17:59Speaker 5: for it, and that's what I did.
- 18:01Speaker 2: There you go, well, it looks magnificent. Now, at some
- 18:04Speaker 2: point along the way, Matt, this deer gets entered in
- 18:07Speaker 2: the Boone and Crockett record books.
- 18:09Speaker 5: Right, yep, yep, it's entered as pass pro as the owner,
- 18:14Speaker 5: and my dad Albert.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Tell us about the details of this buck, some of
- 18:20Speaker 2: the measurements that would make a white tail hunter's jaw drop.
- 18:26Speaker 5: Yeah, well, I mean it's so there's.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Yeah, he's uh, he is the perfect deer. He's the
- 18:35Speaker 2: type of deer that when a wildlife artist is like
- 18:38Speaker 2: drawing a scene that has a white tail bucking buck
- 18:41Speaker 2: in it, they always make a white tail buck that's
- 18:43Speaker 2: just too perfect and too big. And what they're modeling
- 18:47Speaker 2: that after you would think, is this dear that Matt's
- 18:51Speaker 2: dad killed.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Yeah, even though when they draw them, I think they're
- 18:54Speaker 1: even maybe eighty percent smaller, twenty percent smaller. Sorry, they're
- 18:58Speaker 1: only eighty percent of that that joker that thinks amazing. Hey,
- 19:02Speaker 1: is your dad told you that spot? Have you been
- 19:04Speaker 1: to the spot where this deer was harvested?
- 19:07Speaker 5: Yeah, it's actually only about fifteen miles from where he
- 19:10Speaker 5: still lives, but he's taken me out there. And at
- 19:13Speaker 5: the time of the hunt, it was a big cedar farm,
- 19:15Speaker 5: just thick seedars everywhere. It's all just real crop now, unfortunately, And.
- 19:22Speaker 2: What's your dad's attitude been like throughout this seven year
- 19:26Speaker 2: quest of trying to track this thing down. Has he
- 19:28Speaker 2: been super interested or has he just been like totally disinterested.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I mean, he thought it was cool.
- 19:36Speaker 5: He never really cared that much about getting the replica
- 19:38Speaker 5: or getting the rack back. That he didn't even know
- 19:42Speaker 5: it was a state record or how significant of a
- 19:44Speaker 5: deer it was until I kind of started getting myself
- 19:47Speaker 5: into the story of it. But we surprised him with
- 19:52Speaker 5: it Christmas Eve, and he couldn't believe it. Man, he
- 19:56Speaker 5: was just blown away.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Can can you move your camera to show us some
- 20:01Speaker 2: of the details of this buck. We're going to get
- 20:03Speaker 2: a real good look at this thing's rack. My goodness,
- 20:12Speaker 2: just perfect all around, enormous G two s and G
- 20:16Speaker 2: three's that at the same length. I imagine like the only
- 20:19Speaker 2: deductions on this thing were maybe on the brow tides,
- 20:22Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 20:24Speaker 5: Yeah, it's got so it grows scores to twelve and
- 20:28Speaker 5: three eight, So it's got about twelve inches of deductions
- 20:31Speaker 5: and a lot of it is the G five here, Okay,
- 20:34Speaker 5: So he's got like an inch and a half G
- 20:35Speaker 5: five on that side and this sides about five or
- 20:37Speaker 5: six inches.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Amazing deer. We're happy that you were able to track
- 20:43Speaker 2: this thing down and that your story had a happy ending.
- 20:46Speaker 2: How did your fall go this year? Match? When I
- 20:48Speaker 2: talked to you yesterday trying to line up this interview,
- 20:52Speaker 2: you said you needed to wait a few hours before
- 20:54Speaker 2: you could call me because you were deer hunting.
- 20:57Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 20:58Speaker 5: I was just going out a dough last evening and
- 21:01Speaker 5: didn't end up getting one across the field, but didn't
- 21:05Speaker 5: up making a shot.
- 21:06Speaker 2: All right, Matt, Well, congrats on tracking down that deer
- 21:09Speaker 2: and good luck with what's left your white tail season.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Thank you, thanks for joining us. Thanks Matt seven year quest.
- 21:18Speaker 2: I just met the rest of my life trying to
- 21:19Speaker 2: find that buck. If I was Matt, I'm glad that
- 21:22Speaker 2: it worked out for him.
- 21:23Speaker 1: M Yeah, I'm glad he has that I was gonna
- 21:25Speaker 1: I was gonna ask him and just didn't get around
- 21:28Speaker 1: to it. But how real are those replica antlers? Like,
- 21:31Speaker 1: if you don't know that the replica antlers, will you
- 21:35Speaker 1: be fooled?
- 21:36Speaker 2: Well? Were you not there when Dustin Huff brought in Yeah,
- 21:40Speaker 2: Moose his Bucks brought it to the live show in Cleveland.
- 21:43Speaker 2: I think it was Well, you have no idea that
- 21:45Speaker 2: you were looking at a replican I think they're so
- 21:47Speaker 2: good now that they would They would fool you even
- 21:50Speaker 2: if you knew you had a fifty percent chance of
- 21:53Speaker 2: guessing whether or not that thing was real or fake.
- 21:56Speaker 2: I don't think.
- 21:56Speaker 1: But what if you just had like the skull capped
- 21:58Speaker 1: antlers and it was a and you're holding it, like,
- 22:01Speaker 1: do they do the weight?
- 22:03Speaker 2: I imagine it's it's got to be pretty dang similar.
- 22:06Speaker 2: I can't, I can.
- 22:06Speaker 1: I mean, I know, on that sheep mount that John
- 22:10Speaker 1: Hayes did for me, I mean you can't tell the
- 22:14Speaker 1: weight and everything. I mean, it's spot on.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Yeah, you can see that buck. It sounds like at
- 22:21Speaker 2: the Wonders of Wildlife Museum from bass Pro. I don't
- 22:24Speaker 2: think we specifically touched on it there, but in one
- 22:27Speaker 2: of the articles that was written about Matt's story, bass
- 22:30Speaker 2: Pro told Matt that the real antlers will never be
- 22:34Speaker 2: on display anywhere. They're always going to be hidden away
- 22:36Speaker 2: in some storage room. If you go and try to
- 22:40Speaker 2: look at that buck of Matt's dads, which is now
- 22:43Speaker 2: officially the Kansas state record for typical white tails, you're
- 22:47Speaker 2: always looking at a replica.
- 22:49Speaker 1: That's sad.
- 22:50Speaker 2: That is sad. I think so too. I'd just rather
- 22:53Speaker 2: not know at that point. Yeah, all right, moving on,
- 22:57Speaker 2: our next segment is show and tell Mannie.
- 23:01Speaker 8: The show has step Manie, The show has Step Boom
- 23:10Speaker 8: many a show.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Step Spencer, Brata Rock.
- 23:17Speaker 8: What else did you inspect?
- 23:20Speaker 2: What? Another fine jingle from Let's start with you? What
- 23:23Speaker 2: did you.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Phil's jingles?
- 23:26Speaker 2: For a few more minutes, bring to show the classroom.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Well, since we're on the theme of bobcats.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, that is that is the theme.
- 23:34Speaker 4: Huh.
- 23:38Speaker 2: Yanni has a live Bobcat in the studio.
- 23:41Speaker 1: I've never I've never properly like done a post about
- 23:46Speaker 1: this this guy a lot of people. Maybe you can
- 23:49Speaker 1: watch the episode where Jake and I go and kill
- 23:52Speaker 1: this bobcat.
- 23:53Speaker 9: Uh.
- 23:54Speaker 1: It's in Montana. Mingus was not in on the on
- 23:57Speaker 1: the the catch, but it was such a specimen. Jake
- 24:01Speaker 1: said that I should definitely kill it and get it mounted.
- 24:03Speaker 1: How heavy was that thing? Twenty five pounds?
- 24:06Speaker 4: Oh?
- 24:06Speaker 2: I was going to guess twenty eight on the nose
- 24:08Speaker 2: that's like upper end, that's beefy.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Oh yeah, monster. I think they get bigger in the Midwest,
- 24:14Speaker 1: but what they don't have in the Midwest is a
- 24:16Speaker 1: belly like that. Yeah. If you can see that. But
- 24:20Speaker 1: that that is what makes a high dollar bobcat is
- 24:24Speaker 1: when you have that big, wide white belly with those
- 24:27Speaker 1: beautiful black spots.
- 24:28Speaker 2: I've seen three bobcats in real life out in nature
- 24:32Speaker 2: while I was doing something else. They were all half
- 24:34Speaker 2: of this size. This this thing looks enormous to me.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Oh it's yeah. The one I killed yesterday was well
- 24:40Speaker 1: we guess it at fifteen pounds, so ten pounds less,
- 24:43Speaker 1: and it seemed like it was half the size. But yeah.
- 24:45Speaker 1: John Hayes did the tax durmy. It's actually a pillow mount.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Clay was up there and did a little video on
- 24:53Speaker 1: a kyo. John had. He he's doing a pillow mount
- 24:55Speaker 1: of and I thought, man, it'd be great to do
- 24:57Speaker 1: a pillow mount because it's it's hands on right, and
- 25:01Speaker 1: you can you can change its body positioning because it's
- 25:06Speaker 1: got in the old wire is working this thing around.
- 25:09Speaker 1: I mean, you can totally just you know, my goodness,
- 25:12Speaker 1: that's not doesn't look normal. He's making it do the
- 25:14Speaker 1: y m c A. Now.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Yeah, most most taxidermy is looking don't touch, but not
- 25:20Speaker 2: this thing.
- 25:20Speaker 4: No.
- 25:21Speaker 1: I figure even if if the kids that come over
- 25:23Speaker 1: to my house rub the hair off of this thing.
- 25:26Speaker 1: It'll be, it'll be have done. It served its purpose,
- 25:28Speaker 1: you know, which is hopefully to get kids interested in
- 25:32Speaker 1: wildlife and podcasts.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Those pillow mounts are becoming more and more common.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Yeah, but you can't do them. John says you can't
- 25:39Speaker 1: do them on animals much bigger than this. Yeah, it
- 25:42Speaker 1: just gets harder and harder. And he said that especially
- 25:45Speaker 1: for some reason, it's very difficult to get a cat
- 25:49Speaker 1: to look good in a pillow amount. It's much easier
- 25:52Speaker 1: to do a canine for some reason, just because of
- 25:54Speaker 1: the body structure.
- 25:55Speaker 2: What's that thing filled with to give it that like
- 25:58Speaker 2: pillowy sensation?
- 25:59Speaker 7: Do you know?
- 25:59Speaker 1: I don't know exactly. I know it's gotten the old
- 26:02Speaker 1: wire running through is the skeleton, but I don't know
- 26:04Speaker 1: what the actual pillow stuffing is.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Almost like memory foam or something.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it bounces right back.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's satisfying.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:13Speaker 3: The thing I've always been impressed with with that one
- 26:15Speaker 3: is its face, its head, because it's just like so like.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Yeah, listen, one of my favorite things to do. I'm
- 26:22Speaker 1: trying to position them so that folks can look right
- 26:25Speaker 1: into his eyes.
- 26:25Speaker 2: Do we go to a full camera just on on
- 26:27Speaker 2: them filled.
- 26:28Speaker 1: We can't.
- 26:28Speaker 10: It's not going to make it any bigger though, but
- 26:32Speaker 10: I will.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Uh my one of my favorite things to do this.
- 26:35Speaker 1: It used always sell on top of a bookshelf. Was
- 26:37Speaker 1: about eye level. It was cool up there. But now
- 26:40Speaker 1: what I do. My wife loves plants. There's a lot
- 26:42Speaker 1: of plants in the house.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Each had thing towards the camera to give it a
- 26:45Speaker 2: better view. This camera here, Yanni, keep going tell your story, but.
- 26:50Speaker 1: I will hide it. This is a hard multitask that
- 26:55Speaker 1: you're asking about by Spencer.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Well, i'll fill in here for a second. You hit
- 26:58Speaker 2: it in the studio today. Yeah, I just caught a
- 27:00Speaker 2: glance of it coming in through our window and you know,
- 27:04Speaker 2: for half a second it startled.
- 27:06Speaker 10: It was it was curled up under the table when
- 27:09Speaker 10: I walked in and staring right at the door. And
- 27:12Speaker 10: I walked in and I my heart skipped a beat
- 27:14Speaker 10: for a second.
- 27:15Speaker 7: It was.
- 27:15Speaker 10: It was not fun.
- 27:17Speaker 1: So yeah, I'll place it kind of conspicuously, you know,
- 27:21Speaker 1: near under a plant, right, so only half of its
- 27:24Speaker 1: body showing, and you just so it looks like a
- 27:27Speaker 1: cat hiding and staring at you. We had a house
- 27:30Speaker 1: sitter while we were in Latvia, Oh, come by people
- 27:35Speaker 1: checking on chickens and getting eggs and whatnot. It startled
- 27:39Speaker 1: her so bad that she left the fridge door open
- 27:42Speaker 1: and damn near killed my fridge because she just ran
- 27:46Speaker 1: out of the house. She didn't want anything to do
- 27:48Speaker 1: with this thing. But yeah, it's amazing, Like it gets
- 27:51Speaker 1: people every time. Like Phil just saw it underneath the table.
- 27:53Speaker 8: Did she think it was real?
- 27:55Speaker 6: Real?
- 27:56Speaker 1: I don't know what she thought, but she didn't want
- 27:58Speaker 1: to it out.
- 28:00Speaker 2: I wrote an article a few years ago. It was
- 28:02Speaker 2: specific to deer taxidermy and shoulder mounts, and like, what
- 28:05Speaker 2: should you look for if you're visiting a taxi dream
- 28:08Speaker 2: I start looking at a taxi dreamist work and you
- 28:10Speaker 2: want to be confident that they're good at their job.
- 28:13Speaker 2: And they had mentioned a handful of things. The three
- 28:15Speaker 2: that stuck out to me were all regarding the face,
- 28:17Speaker 2: and it was about the eyes, the nose, and the
- 28:20Speaker 2: ears and those three things on this pillow. Uh just
- 28:23Speaker 2: look fabulous.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Oh, it's amazing.
- 28:25Speaker 2: That's why it makes people's heart skip a beat when
- 28:28Speaker 2: they see the damn thing.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Yeah, you just are you getting yesterday's cat just tanned?
- 28:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm just gonna tube skin it, yeah, and hang
- 28:36Speaker 1: it up somewhere in the house. And then when when
- 28:38Speaker 1: Bobcat fur prices get real high, I'm gonna cash in.
- 28:43Speaker 11: That.
- 28:44Speaker 2: That was a good item to bring in for show.
- 28:46Speaker 2: And tell Brody, what do you got with you today?
- 28:48Speaker 3: Oh, Spencer, I'm gonna take you back to a time
- 28:50Speaker 3: when people didn't waste their time watching Yellowstone and squid
- 28:54Speaker 3: Game and they read books.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Uh books. That is an enormous book.
- 29:00Speaker 10: Yeah, the Bobcats kind of in the way there. Yeah,
- 29:07Speaker 10: yes one.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Brody has two enormous tools with him today, stacked on
- 29:14Speaker 2: top of each other.
- 29:15Speaker 3: I inherited these from my dad.
- 29:16Speaker 2: They got to be about ten inches tall.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Both of these were published in the mid sixties. This
- 29:26Speaker 3: is the New Hunters Encyclopedia. Oh wow, not new anymore.
- 29:31Speaker 3: But I used to have the dust jacket for it,
- 29:34Speaker 3: but it fell apart.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Have you read this thing?
- 29:37Speaker 7: Oh?
- 29:37Speaker 3: Yeah, man, that's why I brought him. Like when I
- 29:40Speaker 3: was a kid, I used to I spent countless hours
- 29:43Speaker 3: reading both of these. This one is McLean's standard fishing Encyclopedia,
- 29:49Speaker 3: and it's like extensive, man. And the cool thing about
- 29:53Speaker 3: looking through these now is the stuff that has changed
- 29:57Speaker 3: immensely and the stuff that hasn't changed at all. It's
- 30:01Speaker 3: like because they have everything like inn here from like
- 30:04Speaker 3: guns and cartridges, you know, and a lot of that
- 30:07Speaker 3: stuff's like obsolete now. But yeah they're awesome.
- 30:11Speaker 2: And the the fishing encyclopedia, that thing looks old, but
- 30:16Speaker 2: then you put it next to your hunting encyclopedia and
- 30:18Speaker 2: it makes it look new.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know. I mean maybe this one just
- 30:22Speaker 3: got read more from you know, mid sixties.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Well your data. I like how he labeled the inside
- 30:30Speaker 1: of the cover with his name and the and the
- 30:32Speaker 1: year that he got it. Yeah, with an older.
- 30:35Speaker 2: It's like a piece of tuppleware that you take the
- 30:37Speaker 2: pot luck. Yeah, wanted to make sure when that thing
- 30:40Speaker 2: was making the rounds.
- 30:41Speaker 3: These are sixty year old books and you can still
- 30:45Speaker 3: get them on Amazon. They're not that, they're not that,
- 30:48Speaker 3: they're not thousand dollars collector items. You can still find them.
- 30:53Speaker 3: So yeah, every now and then I pull them out,
- 30:55Speaker 3: take a look.
- 30:56Speaker 2: It's very cool. You can you can have your sons
- 31:00Speaker 2: through those someday.
- 31:01Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Hunting and fishing, Yeah, I mean.
- 31:04Speaker 3: The older one is looked through both of them a
- 31:06Speaker 3: little bit, but it's you know, it's a challenge these days.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Got a lot of competition.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Mm hm, all right. Last thing for show and tell
- 31:14Speaker 2: is what I brought today. And this is one of
- 31:17Speaker 2: my favorite white tails that I have ever killed, because
- 31:22Speaker 2: he has a super unique rack. I killed this buck
- 31:25Speaker 2: on opening day of South Dakota's rifle season in twenty sixteen.
- 31:31Speaker 2: It was the last like five minutes of shooting light.
- 31:34Speaker 2: It was a blizzard, and this this buck was at
- 31:36Speaker 2: like one hundred yards just showed up on the edge
- 31:38Speaker 2: of this cornfield I was hunting, and I didn't have
- 31:41Speaker 2: a great look at him. I was like, man, there
- 31:44Speaker 2: is something weird with this deer. And I had to
- 31:46Speaker 2: decide kind of right then if I was going to
- 31:48Speaker 2: shoot him or not. I could see one side. On
- 31:50Speaker 2: one side, he has just a perfect standard five point
- 31:54Speaker 2: antler that looks like millions of deer walking around North
- 31:59Speaker 2: America right now. That was the side I had a
- 32:01Speaker 2: very good look at, and I was trying to pick
- 32:03Speaker 2: up what was happening on his other side. And I
- 32:05Speaker 2: didn't have a great idea until after I had actually
- 32:08Speaker 2: shot him and got up to him, and then I
- 32:09Speaker 2: still didn't fully understand it until I had skinned him,
- 32:13Speaker 2: just what was going on here? So one side the
- 32:15Speaker 2: standard five point side, the other side he has this
- 32:18Speaker 2: mutant little four point antler, and then underneath that he
- 32:22Speaker 2: has what I would consider probably be an extra main beam.
- 32:26Speaker 2: It's a twelve inch dagger that comes out of the
- 32:30Speaker 2: same pedicle. And then he's got another four inch antler
- 32:33Speaker 2: that is crawling across his skull towards his other normal antler.
- 32:39Speaker 2: And this this thing is just super goofy. I've showed
- 32:42Speaker 2: it to some biologists about like, what do you think
- 32:44Speaker 2: happened here? And there's some common answers that they'll give you.
- 32:49Speaker 2: One of them is that deer will have not just deer,
- 32:52Speaker 2: but elk as well moose. They'll have abnormal antler growth
- 32:56Speaker 2: if they have an injury to one of their legs
- 32:59Speaker 2: because it stricts some blood flow or messes with their
- 33:02Speaker 2: blood vessels, and usually then the other antler opposite of
- 33:07Speaker 2: that leg injury will grow something funky. This year didn't
- 33:10Speaker 2: have anything like that. He was totally normal. I've shot
- 33:13Speaker 2: deer with limps and gates and injuries before. This buck
- 33:17Speaker 2: seemed quite healthy. So then the other answers that they'll
- 33:21Speaker 2: give you is they had an injury to their pedicle
- 33:24Speaker 2: down here, and that could have happened while he was
- 33:26Speaker 2: in Velvet that year, and this might have been just
- 33:29Speaker 2: a one time thing that he threw this rack, or
- 33:32Speaker 2: it could have been permanent damage. I'll never know. I
- 33:34Speaker 2: didn't have any history with this buck. But maybe my
- 33:38Speaker 2: favorite thing about this year is that I don't remember
- 33:41Speaker 2: when I scored him. I scored him after I'd skinn
- 33:43Speaker 2: him out. He was in the one forties. But this antler,
- 33:46Speaker 2: it was like sixty some inches of antler when you're
- 33:50Speaker 2: scoring him. The other antler was only one inch difference.
- 33:53Speaker 2: They almost scored the exactly.
- 33:55Speaker 3: I was just gonna say, like, it's interesting, how on that?
- 33:59Speaker 3: What would be his side?
- 34:00Speaker 1: Uh huh?
- 34:03Speaker 3: You know you got you got these like dinky little
- 34:05Speaker 3: times here.
- 34:06Speaker 2: It's like this care that one is kind of loose.
- 34:08Speaker 2: He was fighting with this one.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that one, Like this thing suck the energy
- 34:14Speaker 1: out of this though totally, you know what I mean.
- 34:16Speaker 2: And I asked a biologist. I was like, so, what
- 34:18Speaker 2: was he just destined to throw the same amount of
- 34:21Speaker 2: antlers no matter how it came out, with what shape?
- 34:23Speaker 2: He was going to grow, and they said, no, that
- 34:25Speaker 2: was just a coincidence, more than likely. But this is
- 34:28Speaker 2: this is one of my favorite white tails that I've
- 34:30Speaker 2: ever killed.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Because did you know he existed before you saw him?
- 34:34Speaker 2: Had no history with this deer. He had actually my
- 34:38Speaker 2: dad had a tag that year as well. He was
- 34:41Speaker 2: hunting about a half mile away, and this buck had
- 34:43Speaker 2: walked by him that evening and it was through some
- 34:47Speaker 2: timber and he didn't have a good look at it either.
- 34:49Speaker 2: And he was with my brother who did not have
- 34:50Speaker 2: a tag, and and they both also had a conversation
- 34:54Speaker 2: like what was up with that deer? There was something
- 34:56Speaker 2: goofy going on? Or like was there another smaller buck
- 34:58Speaker 2: next to him that we just like couldn't get a
- 35:01Speaker 2: good look at his antlers? But this is one of
- 35:03Speaker 2: my favorite deer I've ever killed. All Right, that is
- 35:06Speaker 2: it for Show and Tell today. Let's take a break
- 35:09Speaker 2: for some listener feedback. Phil, what's the chat?
- 35:11Speaker 1: I have to say?
- 35:11Speaker 10: Yeah, before we get to that though, I mentioned this
- 35:14Speaker 10: once before, but for those of you who are listening
- 35:16Speaker 10: in podcast version now or watching it later, you can
- 35:19Speaker 10: get a notification every time we go live on Thursday
- 35:22Speaker 10: if you'd like, and it won't give you notifications for
- 35:25Speaker 10: everything else we post, so only when the mediater podcast
- 35:28Speaker 10: Network YouTube channel goes live, it'll dig, so you'll only
- 35:31Speaker 10: get it once a week. That's not bad. You can
- 35:34Speaker 10: go to your if you're subscribed to the mediater podcast
- 35:37Speaker 10: Network YouTube channel, you should have like a little bell
- 35:41Speaker 10: option somewhere if you go to the page, and that's
- 35:43Speaker 10: sort of like your notification button. If you click that,
- 35:47Speaker 10: you'll get a notification for the whole network. But then
- 35:49Speaker 10: you can go into your settings and then just just
- 35:52Speaker 10: switch it so that you only get a notification for
- 35:54Speaker 10: live streams. So if you don't want to miss the
- 35:57Speaker 10: episode every Thursday, I recommend doing that. You could also
- 36:00Speaker 10: click when I usually post this episode the day before,
- 36:05Speaker 10: sometime in the afternoon or evening, so it pops up
- 36:07Speaker 10: in your subscription feed. There's a separate button if you
- 36:10Speaker 10: just want to get a notification for a single episode
- 36:13Speaker 10: of something that's going to be live streamed. There's a
- 36:14Speaker 10: little button that says notified me in your subscriptions.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Yeah, so if you can't remember that, we go live
- 36:19Speaker 2: every Thursday at noon Central time, follow Phil's directions.
- 36:24Speaker 10: There sure thing we have a question from a woman
- 36:26Speaker 10: named Linda. She says to ask Spencer about his very
- 36:29Speaker 10: first hunt when he fell asleep. Oh that's Linda Newheart. Yeah, well,
- 36:34Speaker 10: what's this story?
- 36:35Speaker 2: That is my mom. I had a youth tag. I
- 36:38Speaker 2: was probably fourteen years old. I was on a deer hunt.
- 36:42Speaker 2: I think it was around Christmas. We had to go
- 36:43Speaker 2: to church that night, and I fell asleep while my
- 36:47Speaker 2: dad and I were sitting there. And I didn't know
- 36:49Speaker 2: this until later. I woke up because a raccoon was
- 36:52Speaker 2: walking by at some point. Didn't kill anything. But later
- 36:55Speaker 2: on my dad had told my mom, I don't think
- 36:58Speaker 2: Spencer's going to be a hunt too.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Just don't.
- 37:02Speaker 2: Think this is for him. So that was my first
- 37:04Speaker 2: ever dear hunt. But but I proved him wrong.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Great.
- 37:09Speaker 10: We have a question from Rashad, who is asking for
- 37:14Speaker 10: tips on identifying critter burrows. This is I don't know
- 37:16Speaker 10: if you guys have any of these. I thought I
- 37:18Speaker 10: asked you in his New Year's resolution is to catch
- 37:19Speaker 10: a red fox that'll settle for a coyote.
- 37:22Speaker 2: I don't have any tips. Anytime I look at someone like,
- 37:24Speaker 2: oh that's a badger or a coyote or a fox,
- 37:27Speaker 2: I never I never have.
- 37:29Speaker 3: Yeah, and a lot of them. I think we'll like
- 37:32Speaker 3: change it up, move into someone else's spot, like different speed.
- 37:36Speaker 1: I think tracks, Yeah, I find tracks at the mouth
- 37:40Speaker 1: to see who's using it.
- 37:41Speaker 2: Yeah, set up a camera right next to it, or
- 37:45Speaker 2: see the damn thing, because they go in and on
- 37:47Speaker 2: of them often. It's not like they go down there
- 37:48Speaker 2: and just, uh, you know, don't come back out for
- 37:51Speaker 2: three days.
- 37:53Speaker 10: This is a follow up to Brody's show in tel segment,
- 37:55Speaker 10: but Free Crank is asking what piece of literature should
- 37:59Speaker 10: a hunter or outdoorsmen own. You guys have some essential
- 38:02Speaker 10: reading tips, Brody, what do you.
- 38:05Speaker 3: Get those two right there? No, the whole met eater library.
- 38:11Speaker 2: That's right there, you go.
- 38:13Speaker 1: It's a good place to start.
- 38:14Speaker 2: Yeah, the entire media library. I like to tell Steve
- 38:17Speaker 2: this sometimes because it makes him feel old. But I
- 38:19Speaker 2: read his first book when I was in college. So
- 38:22Speaker 2: that's that's like Scavenger's Guide.
- 38:25Speaker 3: No, it was the well, it was the volume one
- 38:30Speaker 3: of the hunt Fish Small Small Game Volume one or
- 38:34Speaker 3: Big Game. I can't remember, but.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Those two Big Game.
- 38:37Speaker 3: I mean, literature is like there's literature and then there's
- 38:44Speaker 3: like guide books, you know, not that there. You know
- 38:47Speaker 3: what I'm saying.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, Yeah, I'm with you. Like, if you want
- 38:50Speaker 1: some cool like Sand County Almanac, Yeah, that's definitely a
- 38:54Speaker 1: good place to start.
- 38:55Speaker 3: What's his name cool adventure stories? Capstick? Yeah, the Robert
- 39:01Speaker 3: Ruart spell.
- 39:02Speaker 2: Like Chapstick, which is weird, right, I'm thinking of something else?
- 39:08Speaker 1: Yeah, Robert good. Yep, he's got some good.
- 39:14Speaker 3: Thomas mcguain has fish and stuff. He's even got a
- 39:17Speaker 3: couple of good hunting stories.
- 39:21Speaker 2: What else you got?
- 39:21Speaker 10: Phil Jared is asking for some for a pertinent tip here.
- 39:26Speaker 10: He's at North Alabama, was expecting snow and ice starting
- 39:29Speaker 10: tomorrow around six am. He's asking if he should hunt
- 39:31Speaker 10: this evening or focus on a morning hunt after a
- 39:34Speaker 10: possible storm hunt both.
- 39:39Speaker 2: Uh So this this snow storm is coming at six am,
- 39:42Speaker 2: should I hunt this evening or focus the morning hunt?
- 39:46Speaker 2: I feel like a lot of big buck killers would
- 39:49Speaker 2: tell you that white tails know when there is a
- 39:51Speaker 2: front coming, and they will act on that and they'll
- 39:53Speaker 2: be on their feet more. It would take you know,
- 39:57Speaker 2: a lot of tracking and journaling to act actually prove
- 40:00Speaker 2: that out, But like I said, common white tail hunting
- 40:04Speaker 2: knowledge would say that they're really going to be moving
- 40:07Speaker 2: this evening because they also know what the forecast is.
- 40:11Speaker 1: I found that to be true. And then like during
- 40:13Speaker 1: this storm, sure you can go and find them, but
- 40:16Speaker 1: it can just be kind of miserable and they're not
- 40:18Speaker 1: on their feet. Doesn't seem like quite as much. They
- 40:21Speaker 1: can be huddled in some hole somewhere. But right when
- 40:23Speaker 1: it breaks, it's gonna be good.
- 40:25Speaker 10: Yeah, anything else, Phil, Yeah, we got a couple more,
- 40:28Speaker 10: but let's just do one for now. I guess this
- 40:30Speaker 10: is a question for Yannis or anybody, but Nate's asking
- 40:33Speaker 10: if there's a price difference if for a pillow mount.
- 40:36Speaker 1: I don't know what the price difference is, but that
- 40:39Speaker 1: pillow amount, in my mind, was not cheap. It was
- 40:41Speaker 1: about fourteen hundred dollars. Okay, gotcha, which is.
- 40:46Speaker 3: Probably what you pay for like an elk shoulder mount
- 40:49Speaker 3: something like that.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Yeah, you've know, well we did. I've only shoulder mount
- 40:53Speaker 2: in one critter in my life, but I would know
- 40:55Speaker 2: because we had a trivia question one time about the
- 40:58Speaker 2: average price of a shoulder mount. I think I looked
- 41:00Speaker 2: at like twenty different taxidermists all across the country, and
- 41:04Speaker 2: I don't remember the exact number, but it was like
- 41:07Speaker 2: six hundred eighty seven dollars something like that was the
- 41:09Speaker 2: average price. So you get, you know, a couple big
- 41:13Speaker 2: old white tail shoulder mounted or one bobcat pillow. I
- 41:17Speaker 2: think I'd go with the bobcat pillow. Those are significantly more.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Rare, Yeah, and much easier to move around.
- 41:25Speaker 3: Yeah, Like if you got a life size mount of
- 41:28Speaker 3: that thing, like in some habitat, it'd be at least
- 41:32Speaker 3: as much, but you wouldn't have it'd be like, yeah,
- 41:35Speaker 3: you put it there, it's there forever.
- 41:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:37Speaker 2: To answer one of the questions that we had about
- 41:40Speaker 2: books that outdoorsmen should read, this is something we've written
- 41:43Speaker 2: a lot about on the meat eater dot com. I'm
- 41:45Speaker 2: going to read you some headlines here. You can just
- 41:47Speaker 2: go to our website type in books and you're gonna
- 41:50Speaker 2: get all these results. Four books every white tail hunter
- 41:53Speaker 2: should read. Six more books every white tail hunter should read.
- 41:57Speaker 2: Those were Mark Kenyon, The Best Book for out The
- 41:59Speaker 2: Best Books for outdoor Kids. Eight books every Hunter should Read.
- 42:03Speaker 1: That was Steve.
- 42:04Speaker 2: Five must read fly fishing books. That was Mark Kenyon.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Brody a couple of times wrote what are your ask,
- 42:12Speaker 2: meat Eater, what are your book Recommendations Part one and two.
- 42:15Speaker 2: We had mark to another article, the Ultimate Recommended Reading
- 42:19Speaker 2: List for Hunters, So that'll answer your question much more
- 42:22Speaker 2: thorough than we just did.
- 42:24Speaker 1: Nice.
- 42:26Speaker 2: All right, Our next segment is Hot Tip Off.
- 42:31Speaker 5: Turn your head.
- 42:33Speaker 1: What's that face?
- 42:40Speaker 2: That's salty? That's salty?
- 42:51Speaker 4: Wow.
- 42:51Speaker 2: Never did I think Chapel rowing would get a shout
- 42:55Speaker 2: out on the Meat Eater airwave. She is the one
- 43:00Speaker 2: who sings the song that Phil was doing a spoof off.
- 43:03Speaker 5: H O T t O.
- 43:04Speaker 10: That's one of my more my more modern Phil.
- 43:08Speaker 3: I feel like you've got the potential to really get
- 43:11Speaker 3: a weird Al Yankovic career going.
- 43:14Speaker 10: No, that's so kind of you, Brody. I think it
- 43:15Speaker 10: might be. Uh, you're giving me a lot more credit
- 43:18Speaker 10: than Oh.
- 43:19Speaker 1: No, I don't think Brody's wrong at all. I think
- 43:21Speaker 1: you're honestly You're like, I mean, we love having you here,
- 43:25Speaker 1: but you're not easing your talent what you could?
- 43:30Speaker 2: Uh, you go home and you ask your daughters who
- 43:33Speaker 2: Chapel Roane is and see what kind of answer you get.
- 43:36Speaker 1: All right.
- 43:36Speaker 2: Hot tip Off is where two members of the crew
- 43:39Speaker 2: go head to head with competing pieces of advice and
- 43:42Speaker 2: after we hear each tip, we'll declare which one is hotter.
- 43:45Speaker 2: In the chat, we're gonna listen to you guys as well.
- 43:47Speaker 2: You let us know which hot tip you like.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Better.
- 43:49Speaker 2: Take it away, Phil Cory Culkins.
- 43:58Speaker 9: This is Corey Culkins, and I got another hot tip
- 44:01Speaker 9: for you. I just killed a bowl elk a couple
- 44:03Speaker 9: of days ago, and I got him hanging in my
- 44:05Speaker 9: garage along with my mule deer buck that shot a
- 44:08Speaker 9: couple of days before. That perfect temp by thirty eight
- 44:11Speaker 9: thirty nine degrees in my garage for hanging, had the
- 44:15Speaker 9: deer hanging for about five days, the elk for three days.
- 44:18Speaker 7: Now.
- 44:19Speaker 9: Probably work on the deer first. By the time I'm
- 44:21Speaker 9: done with my elk, it'll probably have hung for just
- 44:24Speaker 9: about a week.
- 44:25Speaker 1: But there's a little bit of.
- 44:26Speaker 9: Hair residue left on this animal. It's so hard to
- 44:30Speaker 9: keep all the hair off those animals in the field,
- 44:34Speaker 9: so you could do this for hours and still not
- 44:40Speaker 9: get all the hair off. Some of it's kind of
- 44:43Speaker 9: stuck on there from the blood. But if you use
- 44:45Speaker 9: a torch, which I know a lot of people use
- 44:47Speaker 9: for waterfowl, getting some of those fine feathers off of
- 44:51Speaker 9: ducks and geese works really well for your red meat too,
- 44:55Speaker 9: So hit away with a little heat.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Job some of these.
- 45:01Speaker 5: See up here's a front shoulder.
- 45:14Speaker 1: Hair.
- 45:15Speaker 6: What hair.
- 45:22Speaker 3: You can hear it, says one.
- 45:23Speaker 10: I like that satisfying.
- 45:25Speaker 2: I can smell it too.
- 45:28Speaker 9: Save a little bit of knife work works so well.
- 45:34Speaker 2: Maggie Huddlo.
- 45:38Speaker 4: Boilcome do another hot tip off on media to Radio Live.
- 45:43Speaker 4: I'm Maggie Hullo and I'm joined by Bill here. We
- 45:47Speaker 4: are talking about Bill's feet today and my tip Bill
- 45:51Speaker 4: is a dog. How you protect hairy dog's feet in
- 45:54Speaker 4: the winter. So Bill has got some grinch paws on
- 46:02Speaker 4: him and they collect eye spawls like son of a
- 46:07Speaker 4: gun in the lenner. So the best thing that I've found,
- 46:11Speaker 4: because booties aren't working, bi, what have you cut? And
- 46:22Speaker 4: I'm not I'm not doing that. I'm not putting them
- 46:25Speaker 4: in those silly little overall things either, not doing that
- 46:28Speaker 4: to my dog. Best thing I've found is this. It's
- 46:31Speaker 4: called musher secret and it's a salve you gotta put
- 46:34Speaker 4: on and you just make sure you get it up
- 46:39Speaker 4: in this part of their paw, in between their toes,
- 46:42Speaker 4: in all those places where the ice sticks. And then
- 46:46Speaker 4: when they're out running around in the snow. They're not
- 46:49Speaker 4: stopping all the time to you know, chew eyeballs out
- 46:53Speaker 4: of their feet and you don't have to pick it
- 46:54Speaker 4: out of their feet, and it's better time for everyone.
- 46:57Speaker 4: So hope that helps for somebody, and go on, get
- 47:01Speaker 4: your dog outside.
- 47:02Speaker 10: They need it and you do too, sick.
- 47:07Speaker 6: See all right, we're about halfway through our walk. Tonight
- 47:12Speaker 6: is fifteen degrees and the timp is dropping. So let's
- 47:15Speaker 6: check out Bill's feet here. You're a big horse. You
- 47:20Speaker 6: can tell there's some snow in there, but it's not
- 47:24Speaker 6: ice ball, so it's not hurting him. He's not getting stores.
- 47:27Speaker 6: It's pretty much just loose snow which sticks all over
- 47:31Speaker 6: him anyway, so he's a happy dog.
- 47:35Speaker 1: All right.
- 47:35Speaker 2: We're now gonna discuss which tip we think is hotter
- 47:38Speaker 2: in the meantime chat get your votes in let us
- 47:41Speaker 2: know if you think you like Corey's hot tip about
- 47:44Speaker 2: torching venison hides, or if you like Maggie's hot tip
- 47:49Speaker 2: about treating dog feet better. I'll go first to me.
- 47:53Speaker 2: Corey's feels like it's kind of well known, Like I
- 47:56Speaker 2: feel like most folks who have a deer hanging in
- 47:59Speaker 2: their ground. Probably also know that you hit that thing
- 48:03Speaker 2: with a torch. Now, I'm not a hairy footed dog owner.
- 48:08Speaker 2: I'm an aspiring hairy footed dog owner. But I don't
- 48:10Speaker 2: know if that one is as common or not. But
- 48:13Speaker 2: I'm gonna give my vote to Maggie.
- 48:14Speaker 1: What do you guys think, I'm kind of in the
- 48:16Speaker 1: same boat. I knew about both of them, so I
- 48:19Speaker 1: didn't learn too much today. But yeah, I don't know.
- 48:23Speaker 1: I'm lucky Mingus doesn't need any salve on his feet.
- 48:27Speaker 1: Your dog probably does.
- 48:28Speaker 3: My dog does. And if you're hanging I love Corey,
- 48:34Speaker 3: but if you're hanging meat in your garage for a week,
- 48:38Speaker 3: you're gonna that meat is gonna develop a rind on it,
- 48:41Speaker 3: a hard rind, and you're just gonna cut it off anyway.
- 48:44Speaker 3: So like a few hairs on it not gonna hurt anything.
- 48:48Speaker 2: But you're like not bringing it, you know, say you're
- 48:50Speaker 2: bringing into your kitchen. You're not bringing that mess into
- 48:53Speaker 2: your cutting board. Maybe I still do well if you
- 48:56Speaker 2: got hairs on there and they're rubbing off and everything else,
- 48:59Speaker 2: I feel like I'm always hitting it with a torch.
- 49:01Speaker 2: It's probably the only reason I own a torch.
- 49:03Speaker 1: Actually, I never do tell you.
- 49:06Speaker 2: What are you voting for? Brody Maggie? All right, it's
- 49:09Speaker 2: unanimous in here, Phil, What is the chance.
- 49:11Speaker 10: It's definitely leaning Maggie. I gotta okay. But also we
- 49:15Speaker 10: have a private comment from an upcoming guest who says,
- 49:18Speaker 10: torch the hair off the dog's feet. Boom, Okay, I
- 49:22Speaker 10: wouldn't do that.
- 49:23Speaker 1: Don't do that.
- 49:24Speaker 2: That's a good viet And our last interview is with
- 49:28Speaker 2: Ben Dedamanti. But before we talk to him, we're going
- 49:31Speaker 2: to show you a crazy video of Ben shooting a
- 49:34Speaker 2: bull elk at four yards. Play the clip, Phil. You
- 50:02Speaker 2: can see that video on this YouTube video, or you
- 50:07Speaker 2: can go to Ben's instagram at shed Crazy to watch it.
- 50:10Speaker 2: But here's the plot twist. Ben was the second of
- 50:13Speaker 2: three guys to shoot that bull that day, and he's
- 50:16Speaker 2: here now to talk to us about that unusual hunt. Ben,
- 50:19Speaker 2: welcome to the show.
- 50:21Speaker 7: Thanks.
- 50:21Speaker 2: Let's go on, hey, Ben, start from the very beginning
- 50:25Speaker 2: of that hunt on opening morning.
- 50:29Speaker 7: Oh yeah, what's utah over the counter. It's a very
- 50:33Speaker 7: low success hunt, low density of elk on the unit,
- 50:37Speaker 7: and we had found some bulls kind of in a
- 50:39Speaker 7: deserty area that were by themselves, and we were super
- 50:44Speaker 7: hopeful that we'd have these bulls to ourselves, but it
- 50:47Speaker 7: didn't actually turn out that way. We went out to
- 50:50Speaker 7: the area to hunt these elk on opening morning and
- 50:53Speaker 7: we found the elk where they had been for basically
- 50:55Speaker 7: the whole summer. We were watching them from across the canyon,
- 50:58Speaker 7: and we sent one body in kind of on a
- 51:01Speaker 7: stalk to get in the path of the bulls so
- 51:04Speaker 7: that he'd be able to get an opportunity at him.
- 51:07Speaker 7: And as we're watching these bulls come up onto this
- 51:09Speaker 7: little plateau in the glass, I noticed another hunter there.
- 51:14Speaker 7: And we'd never see anybody out there during scouting, and
- 51:16Speaker 7: it's not an area where very many people hunt, so
- 51:18Speaker 7: I figured we'd maybe have it to ourselves. Anyway, we
- 51:22Speaker 7: kind of sat back and watched it unfold. I threw
- 51:24Speaker 7: the phone on the phone on the adapter on the
- 51:27Speaker 7: all and we started watching to see what would go down. Anyway,
- 51:30Speaker 7: the elk away it was headed up, walked right to
- 51:33Speaker 7: this other hunter just randomly happened to be on that path,
- 51:39Speaker 7: and we were able to kind of get it on video.
- 51:41Speaker 7: We saw him crouch down behind a rock and saw
- 51:43Speaker 7: the elk walk in front of him at about sixty
- 51:46Speaker 7: or seventy yards, and as the bull got kind of
- 51:48Speaker 7: pasted him, it started to turn broadside. Then it ended
- 51:52Speaker 7: up kind of facing away, and that's the moment he shot.
- 51:54Speaker 7: I think he thought it was going to go fully broadside,
- 51:56Speaker 7: and he ended up hitting the bowl through kind of
- 51:59Speaker 7: the arm meet low the shoulder above the knee, and
- 52:02Speaker 7: the arrow passed through that shoulder and was hanging out
- 52:04Speaker 7: by the fletchings. And so obviously we were kind of bombed,
- 52:08Speaker 7: you know, thinking, here's our bull that we're out here
- 52:09Speaker 7: to try to try to hunt today, and he's he's
- 52:13Speaker 7: now been shot by this other hunter.
- 52:14Speaker 2: So we watched how far were you watching this unfold from?
- 52:18Speaker 7: Ben? We were probably fifteen hundred yards away on a
- 52:21Speaker 7: glassy knob, and so we had the spotters and everything
- 52:24Speaker 7: set up, and we were just kind of kicked back
- 52:26Speaker 7: and we knew our buddy was somewhere in that area,
- 52:27Speaker 7: but I didn't know exactly where. So we watched the bowl.
- 52:32Speaker 7: It runs out maybe one hundred yards, stands around, puts
- 52:34Speaker 7: some weight on his leg, starts walking normally, and it
- 52:37Speaker 7: ends up traveling about another thousand or fifteen hundred yards
- 52:40Speaker 7: and dropping into a small canyon. So we kind of
- 52:43Speaker 7: sat back and thought, well, we'll just watch this play out,
- 52:46Speaker 7: see what happens. We watched the other hunter, and for
- 52:49Speaker 7: about four hours, he never moved to recover the bowl
- 52:52Speaker 7: at all and never went anywhere over in that direction,
- 52:55Speaker 7: and so we sent a friend over just to check
- 52:57Speaker 7: with him and see what.
- 52:58Speaker 2: His plan was.
- 52:59Speaker 7: There was another bowl with it as well, and they
- 53:01Speaker 7: both kind of went down a little canyon together, and
- 53:03Speaker 7: you know, these are the only two elk in this hilario,
- 53:05Speaker 7: so we're thinking, like, we still kind of like to
- 53:07Speaker 7: hunt these elk. So we sent a friend to talk
- 53:09Speaker 7: to the first hunter, and he said he had some
- 53:11Speaker 7: people coming out to help him and they were going
- 53:13Speaker 7: to go recover this bowl. And we let him know
- 53:15Speaker 7: that it was hitting the leg and he thought that
- 53:16Speaker 7: he had hit it in the body cavity. So there
- 53:18Speaker 7: was kind of a little moment there where we didn't,
- 53:20Speaker 7: you know, a misunderstanding whatever. So during all this, the
- 53:25Speaker 7: two bowls kind of split up. The one bowl the
- 53:27Speaker 7: other bowl was this one horn five point I had
- 53:29Speaker 7: one antler, and we were totally interested in hunting that elk.
- 53:33Speaker 7: So we told the other hunter, we're going to go
- 53:35Speaker 7: in and try to kill the one horn bowl, and
- 53:37Speaker 7: I guess we'll see what happens. So where the video
- 53:40Speaker 7: kind of kicks in is me, I'm moving in to
- 53:42Speaker 7: shoot this one horn five point and as I walk
- 53:45Speaker 7: up to the edge of the cliff there, I realized
- 53:47Speaker 7: the six point that this other hunter is hit is
- 53:49Speaker 7: now right below me. He's moved back around underneath the
- 53:51Speaker 7: ledge and he's just posted up right there. By the
- 53:54Speaker 7: time I knew he was there, I mean, he was
- 53:56Speaker 7: already twenty yards or less away from me. So I
- 53:59Speaker 7: just went, well, here's a bowl he's obviousally hit. I'm
- 54:01Speaker 7: going to walk in there and I'm going to finish
- 54:03Speaker 7: the deal and then we'll work it out. So you
- 54:05Speaker 7: see me walk into the edge there. The wind is
- 54:07Speaker 7: just absolutely ripping up out of that canyon. I draw
- 54:11Speaker 7: a walk off shoot that bowl, and my fletching's actually
- 54:16Speaker 7: kind of contacted the rock and hit the bowl in
- 54:20Speaker 7: the shoulder, but it penetrated through the shoulder. The bowl
- 54:23Speaker 7: spins and the arrow kind of backs out and then
- 54:25Speaker 7: it runs down the canyon, and so I'm kind of hectic.
- 54:27Speaker 7: I'm like oh, I need a follow up shot for
- 54:29Speaker 7: sure on the celt and he runs down into the
- 54:32Speaker 7: bottom of the canyon, so I start moving around parallel
- 54:35Speaker 7: to get another shot at him. I actually took another
- 54:37Speaker 7: shot there and just missed him because of the wind.
- 54:39Speaker 7: It just blew the arrow clear off. And as I'm
- 54:42Speaker 7: moving over towards him, I hear my buddy click on
- 54:44Speaker 7: the radio, who had you know, earlier in the day
- 54:47Speaker 7: gone on the stalk and he says, Hey, that bull
- 54:48Speaker 7: just ran past me and I put a perfect arrow
- 54:50Speaker 7: in it. So I'm like, all right, well, this is
- 54:53Speaker 7: a you know, crazy situation. Now we got three people
- 54:57Speaker 7: hit this bowl. But I'm super glad that, you know,
- 54:59Speaker 7: the elk is a least down and this is only
- 55:01Speaker 7: just a couple of minutes after I had hit it.
- 55:03Speaker 7: So I walked to the edge and the bowl was
- 55:05Speaker 7: kind of like expiring. I think my friend put one
- 55:08Speaker 7: more arrow in it and the whole ordeal was done.
- 55:11Speaker 7: So that's kind of the whole story of how that
- 55:14Speaker 7: bowl got killed. But insane to have three people. I mean,
- 55:17Speaker 7: when I posted on Instagram, I was like, this is
- 55:19Speaker 7: standard Utah over the counter stuff, because it seems like
- 55:21Speaker 7: this stuff happens on these over the counter units. But
- 55:25Speaker 7: it did kind of turn into a little bit of
- 55:27Speaker 7: a social media debacle after that. The first hunter he
- 55:30Speaker 7: came down and I was I wasn't there for this part.
- 55:34Speaker 7: I had gone back to get the truck, but had
- 55:36Speaker 7: a bit of a confrontation with my friend who was
- 55:38Speaker 7: the third shooter in this scenario, and he ended up
- 55:42Speaker 7: putting a post on Facebook and it went viral, kind
- 55:46Speaker 7: of like I guess, defaming the third hunter, and it
- 55:50Speaker 7: turned to this big, ugly ordeal.
- 55:53Speaker 1: So luckily, you know what was Ben what was his
- 55:57Speaker 1: problem with the whole thing?
- 56:00Speaker 7: He thought that we should have well, obviously, I think
- 56:02Speaker 7: his biggest problem was that I went in there when
- 56:04Speaker 7: the ball was wounded, right, He thought, you know, I
- 56:06Speaker 7: should have backed out totally, and in hindsight, you know,
- 56:09Speaker 7: everything being what it is, I may have done that.
- 56:11Speaker 7: Like my intention was to shoot this other bowl, and
- 56:13Speaker 7: then it just kind of worked out the way that
- 56:15Speaker 7: it did. Yeah, I don't want it for being frustrated.
- 56:18Speaker 7: But he was able to look to and see where
- 56:21Speaker 7: he'd hit the elk, and when we you know, obviously
- 56:24Speaker 7: were butchering the bowl, we saw where my arrow entered
- 56:26Speaker 7: we saw my buddies and we saw where he had
- 56:28Speaker 7: hit it, and there was nothing close to fatal on
- 56:30Speaker 7: the shot.
- 56:30Speaker 2: Then tell us one more time, Ben, tell us one
- 56:33Speaker 2: more time. Where all three of these arrows wound up
- 56:36Speaker 2: in the thing from the first hunter, you and then
- 56:38Speaker 2: the third hunter.
- 56:39Speaker 7: So the first hunter hit it below the shoulder and
- 56:43Speaker 7: above the knee, so kind of threw the arm meet
- 56:46Speaker 7: from the back to the front, and the arrow was
- 56:47Speaker 7: hanging out the front. Here I hit the bowl in
- 56:50Speaker 7: the shoulder blade and it got through and it hit
- 56:52Speaker 7: for sure hit the close sidelong. I don't know if
- 56:54Speaker 7: it got into the off side lung and then my
- 56:56Speaker 7: buddy hit it just perfect square in the lungs. And
- 56:59Speaker 7: so so when we all talked about that, when we
- 57:01Speaker 7: looked at the bowl, we just decided that, you know,
- 57:04Speaker 7: my buddy put the most lethal arrow on it. He
- 57:06Speaker 7: was the last shoot. I didn't feel like I had
- 57:08Speaker 7: any claim on the bowl because I'm just the middle
- 57:10Speaker 7: guy in this giant cluster, you know what I mean.
- 57:12Speaker 7: So I decided and my buddy decided that he should
- 57:16Speaker 7: tag it. And him tagging it really, you know, upset
- 57:19Speaker 7: this kid and ended up having a bit of a
- 57:20Speaker 7: confrontation over it, so it all ended up kind of
- 57:25Speaker 7: going bigger than we wanted it to. An officer from
- 57:27Speaker 7: the fishing game came out and investigated it. After that,
- 57:30Speaker 7: the post went viral on Facebook and he said there
- 57:32Speaker 7: was no wrongdoing and everything got worked out in the end.
- 57:36Speaker 7: What we ended up doing that I think really solved it.
- 57:38Speaker 7: Has just got on the phone with everybody and with
- 57:40Speaker 7: the other hunter and made some apologies and everybody kind
- 57:43Speaker 7: of just walked away from it and let it be.
- 57:45Speaker 7: But it was just like one of those scenarios you
- 57:48Speaker 7: hoped to never run into, and you would never walk
- 57:50Speaker 7: into intentionally on public land, but kind of got out
- 57:53Speaker 7: of control. And that's kind of why, Like, I mean,
- 57:55Speaker 7: this happened back in August, and I haven't shared a
- 57:57Speaker 7: ton about it because it's such a wild scenario and
- 57:59Speaker 7: it just kind of feels weird. But anyway, that's a story.
- 58:02Speaker 2: Tell us about the messaging of the Facebook post and
- 58:05Speaker 2: how Hunter number one had sort of portrayed the event.
- 58:09Speaker 7: Yeah, so he basically said, I shot this bowl, I
- 58:12Speaker 7: went to blood track it when I found it, there
- 58:15Speaker 7: was somebody else gutting it. That was his story he
- 58:17Speaker 7: put on Facebook. He said it was about an hour later,
- 58:21Speaker 7: and so he made it seem like he'd made a
- 58:23Speaker 7: fatal shot and he went to recover the bowl and
- 58:25Speaker 7: somebody else was there, and so I had footage, you know,
- 58:29Speaker 7: from the whole scenario, from him shooting, to me shooting,
- 58:31Speaker 7: to us recovering it with time stamps, and so I
- 58:33Speaker 7: had to eventually put together a little YouTube video that
- 58:37Speaker 7: I could share for context for the people who were
- 58:40Speaker 7: kind of wrapped up in the whole drama the situation.
- 58:42Speaker 7: And as you guys know, when anything happens and it
- 58:44Speaker 7: gets out there on the social media world, it can
- 58:46Speaker 7: just spiral so fast.
- 58:48Speaker 2: How much time had passed between like Hunter number one
- 58:52Speaker 2: shooting the yelk and then you wind up going on
- 58:55Speaker 2: a stock and coming upon.
- 58:56Speaker 7: It five hours. So he shot it around seven am
- 59:01Speaker 7: and I shot it right at noon.
- 59:02Speaker 2: And what was his plan to recover this bull or
- 59:05Speaker 2: to get another arrow in it?
- 59:07Speaker 7: He just said that he was waiting for his dad
- 59:09Speaker 7: and some friends to come out and help him look
- 59:11Speaker 7: for it, and then they were going to go after it.
- 59:13Speaker 7: But I don't know exactly what he was wanting to do.
- 59:16Speaker 7: Like from his angle, he couldn't see the bull, and
- 59:18Speaker 7: we could see it up the canyon and we told him,
- 59:20Speaker 7: we're like it. When our friend went over and talked
- 59:22Speaker 7: to him, told him, it's on its feet, it's not
- 59:24Speaker 7: hit bad, it's just acting like an elk. So it
- 59:27Speaker 7: turned into this whole ordeal.
- 59:30Speaker 2: Did he like, was he optimistic that he was going
- 59:32Speaker 2: to recover this thing? Did he think he had put
- 59:34Speaker 2: a lethal shot on it?
- 59:37Speaker 7: I don't know, because he had video two of the
- 59:39Speaker 7: bull after the shot, so I think he was kind
- 59:42Speaker 7: of maybe in a spot where I think he told
- 59:44Speaker 7: his friends that he'd hit it fatally and hit it good,
- 59:47Speaker 7: but then maybe when he reviewed through the footage he
- 59:49Speaker 7: knew that he didn't, so he kind of had to
- 59:50Speaker 7: have a moment too, and he looked at the elk
- 59:53Speaker 7: and with the officer and everything, they said, well, if
- 59:55Speaker 7: you hit this bull bidally, there'd be a hole right
- 59:58Speaker 7: here and there's not, so and they basically had to
- 1:00:01Speaker 7: kind of come to an agreement on that.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: But it was dumb and it was.
- 1:00:07Speaker 7: Kind of ugly. But it's just I mean, the video
- 1:00:09Speaker 7: that I got out of it was kind of cool.
- 1:00:11Speaker 7: But all in all hindsight, being what it is, I
- 1:00:13Speaker 7: probably would have handed a little bit different and just
- 1:00:15Speaker 7: maybe chilled out a little more and went damn again
- 1:00:17Speaker 7: or something.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: And what was the game warden's messaging towards you, because
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: he had talked to you not before they went and
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: looked at the carcass, right, he had talked to you afterwards.
- 1:00:28Speaker 7: Yeah, he called me after they'd done an investigation and
- 1:00:30Speaker 7: he's like, just wanted to let you know, like, I've
- 1:00:32Speaker 7: been out there. We looked over the carcass and everything.
- 1:00:34Speaker 7: There was absolutely no wrongdoing that I can find there.
- 1:00:37Speaker 7: There's nothing illegal. There's no legal issue here at all.
- 1:00:39Speaker 7: So it's just kind of something that hunters have to
- 1:00:42Speaker 7: work out in that scenario, as it's been figured out
- 1:00:46Speaker 7: in the past. And Utah, I guess it's not a
- 1:00:47Speaker 7: law but more of a precedent. The person who puts
- 1:00:50Speaker 7: a final arrow or finishes off the animal is the
- 1:00:53Speaker 7: one who supposedly has the right to claim it. That's
- 1:00:57Speaker 7: how it's been decided in the past.
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, I feel like it all went the right way,
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: especially hearing that you guys had had a little zoom
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: meeting and everybody apologize and so everybody's happy or at
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: least like stable now.
- 1:01:12Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, we're all on good terms, you know. And
- 1:01:15Speaker 7: the thing too, I live in a small town. These
- 1:01:17Speaker 7: are local guys, so the last thing I want to
- 1:01:19Speaker 7: do is start a big local stink, you know.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:01:21Speaker 7: So yeah, we're all on good terms with it. And
- 1:01:23Speaker 7: I think, sure the first shooter is disappointed, and you know,
- 1:01:26Speaker 7: nobody's happy that that post ended up going viral with
- 1:01:29Speaker 7: names in it, but it is kind of is what
- 1:01:31Speaker 7: it is at the end of the day, count and
- 1:01:32Speaker 7: do it.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: Yeah, And how I came upon your story, Ben was
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: I saw that video on Instagram, which is an epic
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: stock with just like the wind ripping like it is,
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: and you said you would you had You can see
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: your bow moving. That's not the wind doing that. You're
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: trying to counter the wind to keep your arrow on
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: the rest, right.
- 1:01:52Speaker 7: Yeah, my hear keeps blowing sideways out of the rest
- 1:01:55Speaker 7: and it almost came out of the cage there even
- 1:01:57Speaker 7: so I keep shaking it sideways to keep it. And
- 1:02:00Speaker 7: it hadn't been that windy all day, but it was
- 1:02:02Speaker 7: just like the last maybe five minutes of that stock,
- 1:02:04Speaker 7: it just really kicked up out of the canyon.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: It was wild.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Yeah, this is the this is the kind of over
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: the counter experience the guys joke about, but like, doesn't
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: you know ever really happen where three different dudes shoot
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: the same elk?
- 1:02:19Speaker 7: Yeah, well, I mean sadly around here, it does happen,
- 1:02:22Speaker 7: and it's not that uncommon, I think in my years
- 1:02:26Speaker 7: of hunting over the counter elk in Utah, this is
- 1:02:28Speaker 7: the third bowl that multiple groups have put arrows into. Well, no,
- 1:02:33Speaker 7: the other two were rifle balls. Yeah, yeah, you know
- 1:02:35Speaker 7: this is this is more unique in that fact, for sure.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: Yeah, we hear that down here in Montana too. I
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: got a question for you. I know, you hit a
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: rock a little bit, but it looks like you hit
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: the shoulder blade. It's probably what limited your penetration? Are
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: you gonna have? You have to change your arrow because
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: of what you saw there? Are you pretty happy with
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: the penetration you got?
- 1:02:55Speaker 7: Well, I don't know if I'm going full like thousand
- 1:02:57Speaker 7: grain ranch ferry status or anything like that. I definitely no.
- 1:03:02Speaker 7: I know that I have a heavy arrow, I have
- 1:03:04Speaker 7: a long draw, I shoot seventy three pounds, and you know,
- 1:03:08Speaker 7: I'm not worried about my setup at all in that scenario.
- 1:03:10Speaker 7: It was just more it also did kind of hit
- 1:03:12Speaker 7: that ridge of the shoulder blade, that heavy part of
- 1:03:13Speaker 7: the shoulder blade. To me, it's like most scenarios that
- 1:03:17Speaker 7: arrow is going to do the trick. But I just
- 1:03:20Speaker 7: need to not shoot him on the shoulder. That's the
- 1:03:21Speaker 7: biggest thing.
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: All right, Ben, Well, thanks for joining us to share
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: the story, and good luck with shed hunting this year.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: Yeah, thanks guys, Thanks Ben.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: All right, that brings this to the end of this
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: week's show. Phil, let's get some final feedback from the chat.
- 1:03:36Speaker 10: Yeah, last chance to get questions, and so if you
- 1:03:39Speaker 10: have a question you would like answered, type it in
- 1:03:41Speaker 10: right now into the live chat.
- 1:03:43Speaker 6: Uh.
- 1:03:44Speaker 10: Let's see here. I'll get this one out of the way.
- 1:03:46Speaker 10: Lantern Lab says that they need a clip of me
- 1:03:48Speaker 10: making the jingles. It takes a lot to embarrass me
- 1:03:51Speaker 10: these days. You will never see video footage of me
- 1:03:55Speaker 10: making the jingles.
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: I don't think anyone in the office has seen you
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: make no.
- 1:03:59Speaker 7: No.
- 1:03:59Speaker 10: Randall walked in on me a few weeks ago and
- 1:04:01Speaker 10: I made him leave. It happened. Doctor Randall cannot see me. Oh,
- 1:04:04Speaker 10: it happens. It happens right here, right right behind this desk.
- 1:04:07Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:04:09Speaker 10: Yeah, you'll you'll never witness it. You just have to
- 1:04:11Speaker 10: be in your imagination, which is wait, that could make
- 1:04:13Speaker 10: so much money for this company?
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: Do you do you have to stand up to sing?
- 1:04:17Speaker 10: Philm okay, here's so I for the for the chapel
- 1:04:20Speaker 10: roone one today. I tried because sitting down just I
- 1:04:23Speaker 10: couldn't get the energy out, but the mic wasn't flexible enough,
- 1:04:26Speaker 10: so I had to kind of do like a weird
- 1:04:27Speaker 10: half crouch, which is so that sounds stupid, like terrible
- 1:04:31Speaker 10: and stupid. Right, that's a you're you're not going to
- 1:04:32Speaker 10: see me half crouching shrieking chapel roon into a microphone.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: I'm sorry, Oh.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: That'd be so unless you go to karaoke on that's right, yeah,
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: downtown Bows.
- 1:04:42Speaker 10: Yeah, after two I pas at the eagles. Then you
- 1:04:45Speaker 10: can see me shrieking into a microphone. This might be
- 1:04:48Speaker 10: like a maybe this is just common courtesy stuff for hunters,
- 1:04:52Speaker 10: but I'm curious. Rashad's asking if you're with a hunting
- 1:04:55Speaker 10: buddy that's trying to shoot a deer and he falls asleep,
- 1:04:57Speaker 10: do you shoot the deer? Do you wake your pal up?
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: Oh?
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: Man, that's a good chester. Shoot the deer Chester question,
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: shoot the deer.
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know that there's a specific answer.
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that situational situation dependent.
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: Unless your buddy is an arcleptic, you just shoot that
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: deer a shot.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: Or it depends on how good of a buddy he
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: is to you.
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: Yeah, depends on what kind of deer you're looking at.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: I think too, if it's the Kansas State record buddy,
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: screw him.
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: I think I'd wake up Yiannis to tell him, Hey,
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: I'm about to shoot this deer, but I'm not. I'm
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: not letting Annie talking me.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: Get him in your binos and tell me, tell me
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: where I hit him. D're and on.
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: Turkey hunts with my kid, you know, naps on turkey hunts.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: Oh yeah, the kids sleep all the time.
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: I tell my son, if you're asleep when a gobbler
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: comes in, I'm shooting it.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: Oh is that is that genuine?
- 1:05:49Speaker 7: Oh?
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, Yeah, he's gonna wake up to a gun blast.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Yep, learned the hard way.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: That'll teach him.
- 1:05:57Speaker 6: Uh.
- 1:05:57Speaker 10: Fruit of the maceilium is asking if they're there's a
- 1:06:00Speaker 10: meat quality difference between a spring or a fall black bear.
- 1:06:02Speaker 10: For context, he'll be in Orchie will be in the
- 1:06:05Speaker 10: Oregon Cascades. Bears have no access to fish but lots
- 1:06:09Speaker 10: of berries. Yeah, they're dating a spring versus fall hunt.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: Huge difference.
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: I think fat flavor everything, man, all bears generally going
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: to be better.
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I need anything to add, Nope, Rody's got it. Yeah,
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: all about what that thing has been.
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: Eating for the last I think maybe something at least
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: like where you know, we're down in Colorado, with like
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: that thick oak brush and stuff like that, they can
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: be hard harder to find in the fall.
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: Yeah, well there, you can't hunt them in the springy
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: but but this is Oregon Cascade. But yeah, I would,
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: I would there. I just think in the spring, you're
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: gonna end up with a skinny, skinny er. I mean,
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: you killed a spring bear once that was loaded with fat.
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: But on average that's not normal, not normal. So I
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: would definitely go for a fall hunt if you could cool.
- 1:07:02Speaker 10: I don't know how detailed do you guys want to get,
- 1:07:04Speaker 10: But Jeff's asking for a show in tel segment of
- 1:07:06Speaker 10: everyone's big game rifle setup. I don't think that really
- 1:07:09Speaker 10: needs to be in a show Intel setup. But if
- 1:07:10Speaker 10: you guys have some like basic kits, you you go
- 1:07:13Speaker 10: out with Johanny.
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: What have you been shooting this year?
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: Nobody really talks about their hunting rigs. Last couple of
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: years been hunting with the sig Cross. Both my girls
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: shot their bucks with or and my daughter shot at
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: Wisconsin dough too with the sig Cross. Which is why
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: I like that gun because it is so modular that,
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: you know, I can make a few adjustments. I can
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: shoot it and then make it compact.
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: That folding stock man.
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: Yeah, you can pack it away real easy. And you
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: know I have two of them. One of them's got
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: the Whiskey six I believe on it. One of them
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: has got the Tango scope on it, and they're both
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: chambered and six five creed More And yeah, I'll even
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: shoot those at an elk as long as it's not
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: too far away. That's the hunting rig right now.
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: Yeah, this year I was shooting the Cross, Magnum saw
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: tooth and a seven PRC. And this is like my
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: first fall using a magnum caliber on most of my hunts,
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: and it made me realize, with that muzzle break on there,
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: I need to get a can.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: To that thing.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: Damn hits hard. Yeah, I shot hits my ears hard.
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: I shot my moose with the saw Tooth magnum and
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: three hundred win mag and three of us couldn't hear
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: for two days after that, oh man. But also running
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: an mdt UH twenty six stock with a Tika six
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: five PRC and that's a real nice deer hunting rig
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: elk hunting rig.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: I think that the common denominator here is we're all
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: shooting guns. Were very confident with which is you know
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: what matters most you go out there. You know when
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: you put the crossairs on something, you're gonna kill it dead.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 1:09:04Speaker 10: What else you got, Phil, Let's do one more because
- 1:09:06Speaker 10: this one's light. Chris is asking for honeymoon destination ideas
- 1:09:10Speaker 10: in the US, probably for outdoorsy folks. Do you guys
- 1:09:13Speaker 10: have any tips? Where'd you guys go on your honeymoon?
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: This guy already looks like.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: He's got two three. Man, it's a little late for
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: the honeymoon.
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: Maybe he's asking for someone else.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe maybe.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: He got married during COVID and they just had to
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: push Alaska, go to Alaska.
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: Well, it depends on the time of year.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: Too, right, Max just went to Alaska for his honeymoon.
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: Where'd you go on your honeymoon, Brody?
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: I went to Belize, I went to New Zealand.
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: No, yeah, I went to New York City.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: There you go.
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: It was minus definitely a fishing vacation for sure.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, there's so many places. I mean the
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: same place i'd go take my kids for spring breaking.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: You can go on honeymoon, I don't know, go to
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: the desert and go back back and go to North
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: Carolina and fish the out banks, go to Maine, go
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: to some state you've never been there.
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: I would just say, go on an adventure.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: Don't go on some cruise. Yeah here, yeah, say that
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: from when you're an old person. Uh yeah, go on
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: an adventure with your gal.
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: I love a good road trip, and I've really taken
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: to the PNW the last few years now that we
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: only live like a ten hour drive away, driving up
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: and down the coast to Oregon, Washington, northern California. Nothing
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: else like it as far as place as I've been,
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: love it anything else, Phill, No, let's call it there,
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: all right. That Uh, that's the end of the show.
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: But after we say goodbye, Phil is going to play
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: Chester's newest song, which is available on Spotify right now.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: I've already added to a bunch of my playlists. Chester
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: didn't even ask for this plug, didn't even really tell
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: us that it existed. I just solid on Spotify and
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: listened to it, and I was like, damn it, Chester,
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: that is that's delightful.
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: It's a good song.
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: It's a good hear it. And I told Chester I
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: didn't ask. I said, we're gonna play this at the
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: end of media to radio this.
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: Phil, you need to cover one of chester songs.
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: Oh, I wouldn't disrespect in that way.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: All right, So after we say goodbye and the rock
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: music plays, Phil is going to play for you Chester's
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: newest tune.
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: Thanks everybody for tuning in.
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: See you next week.
- 1:11:48Speaker 8: Is this the wrong inside of Heaven?
- 1:11:51Speaker 11: MS?
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: It's just me?
- 1:11:53Speaker 8: Yeah, this is how s anxiety. She left me in
- 1:11:59Speaker 8: the room. The dog, he said, let him go, please
- 1:12:03Speaker 8: come back? No, no, no, babe. Well I'm not the
- 1:12:10Speaker 8: man you always thought i'd be.
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:12:14Speaker 8: Living on the edge of sanit Tea. I haven't had
- 1:12:19Speaker 8: a drink in about six weeks, refrained from the pint
- 1:12:21Speaker 8: of dome I might. I left the car and to
- 1:12:24Speaker 8: Guy's bike outside.
- 1:12:29Speaker 12: So cheers beards brand new. You say it, toast, I
- 1:12:36Speaker 12: love you the most.
- 1:12:39Speaker 8: Shoot some pool with your foods. Tell a couple of
- 1:12:44Speaker 8: lies with my guys.
- 1:13:10Speaker 11: Well, I took that bik that I stole from Mike
- 1:13:15Speaker 11: down to the tavern where I just Mike spent three
- 1:13:20Speaker 11: weeks since she called.
- 1:13:21Speaker 8: I figure it don't matter anyhow.
- 1:13:24Speaker 13: You take the sober getting over you, so cheers to
- 1:13:32Speaker 13: peers brand new.
- 1:13:36Speaker 8: See it toast, I love you the most. Shoot some
- 1:13:41Speaker 8: pool with your fools. You tell a couple of lies
- 1:13:45Speaker 8: with my guys.
- 1:14:10Speaker 11: Now, I'm cruising down this hill on their eighteen inch wheels.
- 1:14:15Speaker 8: Never got much slang, but the night winds got my back.
- 1:14:20Speaker 11: Cruise along in this moonlight day, seventh year, trying to
- 1:14:23Speaker 11: keep her straight, tears all driving, going so fast, baby,
- 1:14:27Speaker 11: HiT's a lessening in the past.
- 1:14:29Speaker 8: Going down at the stars tonight. Yes, I'm going down
- 1:14:35Speaker 8: with the stars to night.
