- 1:27Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Thank you very much.
- 1:30Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So we'll we'll cover um a couple couple topics here today.
- 1:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: The first one, uh a little sentimental.
- 1:44Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh I guess that's probably the best way to say it.
- 1:49Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And may not seem like a huge deal to some of you.
- 1:53Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's okay.
- 1:56Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We have 515 plus other episodes, so I'm sure you'll find at least 50 or 60 or 200 that would uh tickle your fancy.
- 2:10Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So I was at the gym earlier today, and I my memory kind of left me for for a few.
- 2:25Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So what I was trying to do is to rem I was trying to remember what I what body part I was working out today.
- 2:34Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So yesterday I did chest.
- 2:38Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So usually chest and back go together.
- 2:40Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I'm trying to split it up.
- 2:43Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So I'm doing like one body part, or if I do two, like if I do curls or for biceps, uh, then I would maybe do forearms, and so there's there's multiple exercises for each of those.
- 3:05Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: On other days, I will just do uh like yesterday I did, or recently I did shoulders, and shoulders was just a killer workout, it felt really good.
- 3:20Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So you feel the burn, it's how you know that you know you're waking those muscles up.
- 3:26Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um, I'm waking them up from over 20 years ago, so it it's great to see that they're still there.
- 3:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh so today I I couldn't quite put my finger on what what I was uh what I was gonna do, you know, what I was gonna work out.
- 3:50Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It was gonna work out.
- 3:52Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I just didn't know how.
- 3:57Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And and I hadn't done any cardio, specific cardio, you know, whether it's a treadmill, stair climber, rowing machine, bike, uh, you name it, stair climber.
- 4:13Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh they might have said that one twice.
- 4:16Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Sorry, it happens.
- 4:19Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so that's what I decided to do.
- 4:24Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Because I'm not in, as I mentioned, I'm not in the whole working out game to be in a competition.
- 4:31Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I mean, I just wanna I just want to be a little more active than what I have been over the past many years.
- 4:43Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So I did the bike for I think it was 30 minutes, and then this kind of brought back memories from when I had my shoulder surgery.
- 4:55Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So back when I was in high school, uh there was a uh basically they called it a bone spur, and and and so they did is they made three small incisions, one in the front, one on the side, one on the back, and then they uh the the surgeon then uh went in and took the bone uh because it was affecting how I was throwing the baseball, and and and and so that's what that surgery was about.
- 5:33Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: There's recovery time, and I never really recovered because I had to learn how to throw the ball, and I just never my mind and my anxiety part of it is rooted there of um yeah, so I remember the rehab for that, and where I went for rehab, I did many exercises, right, to get my shoulders stronger.
- 6:10Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um and one of those one of those uh I guess workout methods was you know, usually you'll have like the bike, right?
- 6:22Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So your the feet will be moving, like and like you're riding a bike, or stair climber, like with the feet like you're climbing up stairs, or the treadmill, uh and all those all those things.
- 6:39Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Well, there's also this machine that like if you would ride the bike, that'd be for your legs, but it was for your arms, so it was basically like a bike for your hands and arms, and so there were two grips, and then you just like you were riding a bike forwards and then backwards, and you would do, and I would do that for I don't know, five, ten minutes to get kind of warmed up.
- 7:16Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So that was many years ago, and today was the first day that I saw a machine just like that, and so it took me back to in my mind, it took me back to those days of when I was doing the rehab for my shoulder, but it actually felt felt good because there was actually a couple of pieces of tape on the screen, so I'm guessing that the electrical part of the unit was not working, but the actual you know pedaling with the arms and hands and shoulders and all that forwards and backwards, that wasn't broken, so I just kind of did forward for a little bit.
- 8:17Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I don't even I didn't even count the time, and I did backwards, and I did that twice.
- 8:26Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And I felt a little bit at peace.
- 8:28Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And you might be saying, well, what do you how is this even relatable?
- 8:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We're so we're so stuck on numbers and how many people viewed our social media, how many people watch, how long do they watch, where did they come from, what what app did they come from?
- 8:53Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Spotify, they come from Apple, uh, what country, what city, what state, what province, and how many?
- 9:03Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so there's all these numbers, and so it was a little bit refreshing that that screen didn't work because then it didn't take my mind to look at a screen, another screen, to see, like, oh Justin, you're only doing whatever the speed is, right?
- 9:28Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So the faster you go, the higher the speed goes, the more calories you burn, and you it kind of goes from there.
- 9:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Whereas on the bike, it had all the numbers, had the calories, it had the distance, uh, and a few other numbers, uh, time.
- 9:49Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So you get your time, so the one I was on was a 10-minute increment.
- 9:56Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So you get either start at zero, and then it would, and then the numbers would go up until you get 10 minutes, or it would go 10 minutes and then down until you hit zero calling zero, zero.
- 10:13Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And that's one thing that I got to think thinking was again, we've we've already done an episode on numbers, so you can check that out.
- 10:26Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: But it was today was another one of those days where the numbers and the screens, uh, it was again it was it was helpful to have a screen that wasn't working because I got to just do what my body was feeling.
- 10:42Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: When it was feeling tired, then I stopped.
- 10:47Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: When it wasn't, then I just kept going.
- 10:51Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So, all in all, I probably did maybe 15, 17 minutes total on that, that particular uh the arm bike or whatever the proper name is, and then I did 30 minutes on the uh the bike.
- 11:12Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so I feel good because I I did I did things different than I had been doing the last two weeks, and yeah, the arm machine again that that brought me back many years ago to my surgery and my rehab.
- 11:33Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: But what I failed to realize was when I was rehabbing, I did have specific markers that I was supposed to hit.
- 11:47Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Like if there was a certain speed, I was supposed to, you know, get that number or higher for the period of time.
- 11:58Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And I don't remember if it was five-minute increments or ten minutes, uh that part doesn't matter.
- 12:07Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: But I was chasing a number, and today I wasn't, so it felt good, at least for the arm bike.
- 12:19Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And then the sentimental part was and it has been, I just haven't brought it up, is lots of different people go to the gym for lots of different reasons.
- 12:45Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And I my dad, when he was still here on earth, one of the things he liked to do was to walk.
- 13:06Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So he'd go to the mall and he'd walk inside, he'd walk outside, he'd walk in the neighborhood depending on the weather, and he always would say, This is what you know, my retirement, this is what I'm being paid to do right now, is the walk.
- 13:30Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And at the outset of his my dad's cancer diagnosis, he had a walker.
- 13:53Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Not a can he didn't have a cane, he had a walker.
- 13:58Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so the doctor, all the doctors were saying, you know, if you can get up and exercise, like just walk around the house.
- 14:11Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And he would do that.
- 14:17Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And then there became a time where he was unable.
- 14:30Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so when I was at the gym today, I don't know what I don't know what these individuals I don't know if they have health concerns, if they're just using the walker just for balance, I don't know.
- 14:49Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, but there's a track at the gym, and it kind of goes uh I mean it goes around where all the equipment and all the you know the basketball hoops and aerobics and cycling and all those.
- 15:08Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So as I'm either working out with the the the weights, or like today I was doing more of the cardio with my legs and my arms, I was able to look around a little bit more, and there were I think two today.
- 15:29Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: One for sure, I I think there was two.
- 15:32Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: If there wasn't two today, then it would was yesterday.
- 15:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: But there were these gentlemen who were walking around this track with their walker, and they weren't going real fast, didn't matter.
- 15:54Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Kind of like the arm the arm uh bicycle that I used.
- 16:01Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um I wasn't concerned about the numbers, I wasn't concerned about how fast, how many calories, I was just concerned about doing something a little bit different, and that way it kind of helped loosen up my muscles, my arms, my legs a little bit for tomorrow being an off day.
- 16:30Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: But when I looked up and I saw these gentlemen, they're walking around the track at their own pace, and they were just walking with their walker, and it it kind of I kind of it did remind me of my dad when he was able to use the walker and I kind of saw a little bit of my dad or a lot of a lot of my dad and these gentlemen that were doing this the walking with their their walker because my dad, he that's what he would as long as he was able to do it, he would do it.
- 17:28Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so the fact these gentlemen were doing it, it was just again just brought back a memory of when you know my dad was able to walk on his own, and then when he was where his balance wasn't quite as great, he would use a walker and he would walk around the house and get exercise, and there was some physical therapy for a little bit of time trying to help his muscles get a little bit stronger.
- 18:24Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So I think like I did today, maybe maybe you have at some point, some time, where you see someone or someone, more than one person and it takes you back to a time, especially if your loved one has gone to heaven.
- 19:03Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Where we see our loved one like I saw my dad with these gentlemen who were walking with their walker.
- 19:16Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I mean, they had to drive the car, they had to get out, they get their walker out.
- 19:21Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: They I mean and and I guess what I've noticed so far at the particular gym that I go to like there's no judging, at least that I witnessed.
- 19:40Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so nobody was there making fun of them or which would have been totally inappropriate if people would would would be doing that.
- 19:53Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Totally inappropriate.
- 19:56Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: But they weren't.
- 20:40Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: One of the things I was looking for in a gym was kind of that no judgment zone where people wouldn't judge what you're wearing, how much weight you're lifting, uh, anything like that, whether you're using a walker or a cane to walk.
- 21:01Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: There's none of that.
- 21:02Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: If anything, people are helpful in helping those individuals if they need help.
- 21:13Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so it makes me feel good that again, I'm only a couple weeks in, so we'll we'll continue on this kind of vlog journey at the gym.
- 21:32Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: But it's really it's kind of refreshing after we watch the news, listen to the news, read the news of how how divided people seem to be over certain issues.
- 21:56Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so when I go to the gym and I just see people.
- 22:00Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Being people.
- 22:00Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Nobody's you know walking around with a D on their shirt or R or an I or an L for libertarian.
- 22:17Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Nobody cares, at least from what I've noticed, which is good.
- 22:22Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Because as I've mentioned on a few earlier episodes, when I work out, I just want to go and work out and go and I want to leave.
- 22:47Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Especially since I'm not a talker at first, but somebody's you know getting a conversation, I'll I'll talk for quite a while, as uh as you probably can tell.
- 23:08Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So I think the big big message of this episode is you know, be kind to others, you know, meet them where they're at.
- 23:19Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: If somebody needs help and you're available, and holding a door open, helping somebody down the steps, and then they use their walker or up the steps, and then they use their walker to walk.
- 23:44Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's it's a little bit refreshing, and for that period of time, it it takes my mind off of just all the all the things that are that are happening.
- 24:04Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: More so when I do the weights.
- 24:06Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: When I do the I do the bike, I have a little my mind has a little more free time because I'm it's a continuous thing.
- 24:17Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So the 30 minutes is it's a continuous, whereas when you know I I work out with free weights or uh weight machines, you know, uh, you know, whether I do eight or ten or twelve or fifteen or twenty five repetitions, it it that part's continuous, each set of 10, each set of 15, each set of 25.
- 24:49Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's all just broken up in into sets.
- 24:55Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So then my mind just goes, okay, I did one set on this machine, now I need to go over here, and so it's really taken up mental capacity, mental energy more than I'm sitting riding a bike or even doing the arm bike.
- 25:18Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh nonetheless, even taking my mind off things for just a little bit of time, whether that's seconds or minutes, for me that's that's all I can ask for.
- 25:42Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: That's what I'm really aiming for is to try not to think about the what ifs.
- 25:54Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: What if this, what if that, what if this, what of that?
- 25:59Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Doesn't do any good.
- 26:04Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So whether it's the gym or something else, another hobby.
- 26:13Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: That could be something that takes your mind off of some decisions that you have to make coming up, some decisions that we put off.
- 26:43Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so, yeah, I've done a lot of episodes about the gym, and the reason why is because I I haven't been going to the gym for what is it, the over 500 episodes.
- 27:00Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So I feel like this is a way that I can I can share and talk again, very transparent on what's happening and how's it going.
- 27:19Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And I might relate to to you, or somebody you know, so that so thank you, excuse me.
- 27:30Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Thank you for joining us on this episode of the show again.
- 27:34Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: If you can give us a thumbs up, like, follow, subscribe, share, reshare, repost, uh, share our podcast, share our voices for voices podcast, a TV show with maybe 25 contacts in your phone.
- 27:54Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We'd greatly appreciate that.
- 27:56Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And those are all things that are free to do.
- 28:00Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So until next time, let's celebrate the voices of everybody, and let's be a voice for ourselves and somebody else in need.
- 28:11Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Bye for now.
- 28:12Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I'll see you next time.
