- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, welcome back to Inside the Data on Inside the Birds,
- 0:13Speaker 1: and of course I'm Jeff Moser alongside our data and
- 0:15Speaker 1: analyst expert, analytics expert. I should say, Sam Finkle, what's
- 0:21Speaker 1: going on? Sam? How you doing?
- 0:22Speaker 2: What an intro I've been working on that. It definitely
- 0:26Speaker 2: can tell it looks great. It's not a great for sure.
- 0:29Speaker 1: If I had done it too long, then you would
- 0:30Speaker 1: have heard my voice crack. So I had to do
- 0:32Speaker 1: it really quick. I'm not Michael Buffer. I can't carry
- 0:34Speaker 1: that thing for for twenty five seconds. So I did
- 0:37Speaker 1: it perfectly.
- 0:37Speaker 2: There.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Great to have you and very appreciative because we are
- 0:41Speaker 1: going to do a two part Inside the Data series.
- 0:44Speaker 1: This show is part one that everybody's listening to. Now,
- 0:47Speaker 1: we're gonna recap the trade deadline, specifically the Eagles moves.
- 0:51Speaker 1: I also want to get your insight, whether it's analytically
- 0:54Speaker 1: or not, just on some of the other moves around
- 0:56Speaker 1: the NFL. And then in Part two, which will come
- 0:59Speaker 1: out later this week, we're gonna kind of summarize five
- 1:02Speaker 1: major themes of the first half of the Eagles through
- 1:05Speaker 1: an analytics lens and it's gonna be really comprehensive. So
- 1:10Speaker 1: very excited about that show as well. So everybody gets
- 1:13Speaker 1: a two for one deal this week too. To Inside
- 1:16Speaker 1: the Data this with Sam Finkel in one week. I'm
- 1:18Speaker 1: sure that's like I have an early Christmas present, Sam.
- 1:22Speaker 3: That's very kind. I hope everyone feels the same way.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I'm sure they do. Why wouldn't they just your first reaction? Now,
- 1:31Speaker 1: you know, last time we did an inside the Data,
- 1:33Speaker 1: the Eagles had already traded for Michael Carter the second,
- 1:36Speaker 1: so we went through that and the thing with him
- 1:39Speaker 1: was that there was a small sample size this year
- 1:43Speaker 1: to work with, but we were able to get contextual
- 1:45Speaker 1: with his career. Talk about an even smaller sample size,
- 1:48Speaker 1: JayR Alexander, who's only played about sixty snaps this year.
- 1:51Speaker 1: But in general, when you fold in Carter to the second,
- 1:56Speaker 1: Jaire Alexander and Jalen Phillips from Miami, putting the analytics aside,
- 2:01Speaker 1: just overall your.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Thoughts, Yeah, I mean, listen, I think they're pretty low risk,
- 2:08Speaker 2: high reward moves and you don't normally see that. Particularly
- 2:11Speaker 2: the Alexander trade. They didn't really give up that much,
- 2:14Speaker 2: and you know, you feel pretty good if he can
- 2:17Speaker 2: return to form, and it's a big if. With the
- 2:21Speaker 2: Phillips trade, I also feel like you feel pretty good
- 2:25Speaker 2: because if he doesn't work out for whatever reason, I mean,
- 2:28Speaker 2: it's another body and they need the body, and then
- 2:31Speaker 2: you get the comp pick if he leaves next year.
- 2:34Speaker 2: So it's you feel pretty good just based on what
- 2:38Speaker 2: was given up and what is really at stake. And
- 2:42Speaker 2: that's why I think, like, honestly, it's a pretty low risk,
- 2:45Speaker 2: high reward, which again you don't normally see.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I would agree. And in a case like the
- 2:49Speaker 1: Alexander one, where you give up like a future seventh
- 2:54Speaker 1: to get back a sixth, which does I think what
- 2:57Speaker 1: the deal was?
- 2:58Speaker 2: I think I think we gave a the Eagles gave
- 3:01Speaker 2: us sixth and got and gave a seventh as well.
- 3:03Speaker 3: It was the Ravens.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I'm murdered that the Ravens sent Alexander and a future
- 3:09Speaker 1: seventh twenty twenty seventh seventh round pick to the Eagles
- 3:12Speaker 1: in exchange for a twenty twenty six sixth round pick. Yeah,
- 3:15Speaker 1: you're correct. So that is just such a low, low
- 3:19Speaker 1: exchange of picks that could wind up being even though
- 3:21Speaker 1: they're in different rafts, Like, I don't even consider it
- 3:24Speaker 1: the trade to be honest with you, it's just like
- 3:25Speaker 1: the Eagles got Gyr Alexander and who knows at that point,
- 3:29Speaker 1: you know, because you and I both know both these
- 3:31Speaker 1: teams are going to trade that pick that they got
- 3:33Speaker 1: from each other seven times over before they actually make
- 3:36Speaker 1: the pick.
- 3:36Speaker 2: So and we'll we'll track every single Oh, I know
- 3:39Speaker 2: we will, yeh.
- 3:41Speaker 1: So So okay, so the Eagles improve themselves. I think
- 3:44Speaker 1: we both feel that way. Some teams took really big
- 3:48Speaker 1: swings out of the ankles, I might say, and we'll see.
- 3:52Speaker 1: But the Eagles, I thought, moderately, not moderately, they improved
- 3:55Speaker 1: themselves without bankrolling their future or leaving themselves in, you know,
- 4:00Speaker 1: a scary territory going down the road.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Absolutely awesome.
- 4:04Speaker 1: All right, So what we'll do is take a look
- 4:08Speaker 1: from an analytics standpoint of the data that you compiled
- 4:12Speaker 1: here on the trade acquisitions. Let's get into the jar.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Is it Jari Jaiyir Jari? I think it's Jaiyir?
- 4:20Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's Jay.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Yeah. I gotta get on Greg on that one. But
- 4:25Speaker 1: just as you laid it out, here are the terms
- 4:27Speaker 1: of the deal. The Eagles get Alexander and next year
- 4:31Speaker 1: twenty twenty seven, sorry, two years from now, seventh round pick,
- 4:35Speaker 1: and the Ravens get a sixth round pick from the Eagles,
- 4:40Speaker 1: of which I think they have a few as they
- 4:42Speaker 1: typically do. So let's now look at the data that
- 4:46Speaker 1: you compiled here on Jarry Alexander and I'm going to
- 4:49Speaker 1: let you take it away with what you think stands out.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, again, small sample size, but I was
- 4:55Speaker 2: able to use the same chart that I did for
- 4:59Speaker 2: Michael Carter and all the snaps Jia Alexander has done
- 5:02Speaker 2: this year has been on the outside, so it worked
- 5:05Speaker 2: out really well. Again, not a great QBR one to
- 5:10Speaker 2: eighteen point eight, which would be the worst among every
- 5:14Speaker 2: corner in the corner room. And he allowed five targets,
- 5:20Speaker 2: five targets, five receptions, one hundred and sixteen yards thirty
- 5:23Speaker 2: after catch, no touchdowns, no interceptions. And then you look
- 5:28Speaker 2: at those like relative stats and it's two point seven
- 5:32Speaker 2: yards per coverage snap, eight point six snaps per target,
- 5:37Speaker 2: and eight point six snaps per reception. Because again it's
- 5:41Speaker 2: the same number, which you know that yards per coverage
- 5:46Speaker 2: snap is the highest among relevant corners. I mean, Perry
- 5:52Speaker 2: Nickerson would be higher at three point five, but he's
- 5:54Speaker 2: only had four coverage snaps. I'm not sure it's particularly
- 5:57Speaker 2: fair to say, but again, you know, there's a small
- 6:00Speaker 2: a sample size, and there really wasn't that much opportunity
- 6:05Speaker 2: for j R. Alexander in Baltimore after he got hurt
- 6:08Speaker 2: and he was a healthy scratch. There was some you knows,
- 6:11Speaker 2: there's a reason why Baltimore moved on from him too,
- 6:14Speaker 2: you know.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Yeah, so I probably said it already on too many
- 6:18Speaker 1: different podcasts throughout the week, Like it's hard to get
- 6:20Speaker 1: past the context that the Ravens were one of the
- 6:23Speaker 1: worst defenses in the NFL for the first six to
- 6:26Speaker 1: seven weeks and they would not play him even when
- 6:29Speaker 1: he was healthy. Now, just being healthy to be to
- 6:32Speaker 1: be fair, right, means you can play, but it doesn't
- 6:35Speaker 1: mean your conditioning is there. He obviously had the knee
- 6:38Speaker 1: I think had knee surgery, and then he was slowed
- 6:41Speaker 1: up in camp. So like you know, Brandon Graham right
- 6:43Speaker 1: now is healthy, but I don't think the Eagles are
- 6:45Speaker 1: ready to play him for an entire game, so to speak.
- 6:48Speaker 1: So it's your conditioning that really matters the most, and
- 6:51Speaker 1: maybe they just felt like he was not conditioned Now.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I don't know how that helps the Eagles who really
- 6:56Speaker 1: need an answer at CB two. They feel like four
- 7:01Speaker 1: weeks from now or three weeks from now, or even
- 7:03Speaker 1: maybe sooner than that, they can get his conditioning up
- 7:07Speaker 1: to be the player that he was a couple of
- 7:09Speaker 1: years ago.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Yeah, And honestly, I mean, you don't necessarily know if
- 7:13Speaker 2: he's even going to be that player again. But if
- 7:15Speaker 2: you can get, you know, eighty percent of that, you
- 7:17Speaker 2: feel pretty good at your second position.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Right. Well, the mission here is can I get something
- 7:22Speaker 1: that's better than what I've been getting from Adriy Jackson
- 7:25Speaker 1: or Killy Ringo.
- 7:26Speaker 2: And I think eighty percent of what jay R Alexander
- 7:28Speaker 2: has been in his career feels really good there.
- 7:31Speaker 1: I agree, if you can get eighty percent of what
- 7:35Speaker 1: jay R Alexander has been, you've got yourself Darius Slay
- 7:37Speaker 1: last year. That's how I would look at it. I
- 7:40Speaker 1: just think at this point that's a pretty big if,
- 7:42Speaker 1: given you know the drop off, and you know, the
- 7:45Speaker 1: Ravens were excited to get this guy, and even Howie
- 7:49Speaker 1: Roseman said he thought it was a great move by
- 7:50Speaker 1: the Ravens because what the Ravens wanted to do was
- 7:54Speaker 1: be able to play JayR Alexander outside and then play
- 7:57Speaker 1: Nate Wiggins, their first round pick from last year outside,
- 8:00Speaker 1: play Marlon Humphrey. They're all pro corner who's a great
- 8:03Speaker 1: hybrid corner at the nickel, and then keep Kyle Hamilton,
- 8:07Speaker 1: they're all pro safety at safety. What they've wound up
- 8:10Speaker 1: doing has not hurt them too much because their defense
- 8:13Speaker 1: is getting a little better. They've just basically moved Humphrey
- 8:16Speaker 1: back to the outside opposite Wiggins, and moved Kyle Hamilton
- 8:20Speaker 1: to that nickel role, that slot corner role, and then
- 8:23Speaker 1: just replaced him with a different safety. And Hamilton is
- 8:27Speaker 1: so good as a nickel safety that it really seems
- 8:32Speaker 1: like they've been okay. I mean, they again bad defense,
- 8:34Speaker 1: but their last game, I know was against the Dolphins,
- 8:36Speaker 1: but they started to look better and they got healthier.
- 8:39Speaker 1: I mean, a lot of their defensive issues was with
- 8:40Speaker 1: their injuries. Hey, it's Jeff Mosher, and if you have
- 8:43Speaker 1: a family and kids at home, like me, you always
- 8:45Speaker 1: want them to be fully protected. That's why I'm thrilled
- 8:48Speaker 1: to be a simply safe customer. And our house is
- 8:51Speaker 1: equipped with the most technologically advanced alarm system you can get.
- 8:55Speaker 1: If you could actually stop someone from breaking into your
- 8:57Speaker 1: home before they got inside, why wouldn't you. Traditional security
- 9:01Speaker 1: systems only react after a break in, but simply Safe
- 9:04Speaker 1: is different because it stops crimes before they happen. With
- 9:08Speaker 1: active guard outdoor protection. They're AI powered cameras detect threats
- 9:13Speaker 1: while they're still outside your home, and they alert real
- 9:16Speaker 1: security agents. These agents take action while the intruder is
- 9:20Speaker 1: still outside and confront the intruder to let them know
- 9:23Speaker 1: they're being watched on camera and police is on the way.
- 9:26Speaker 1: And that's how you stop a crime before it's committed.
- 9:29Speaker 1: There's no long term contracts or hidden fees. You can
- 9:32Speaker 1: cancel any time, and it comes with a sixty day
- 9:34Speaker 1: money back guarantee. Try it and see the difference for yourself.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Do not miss out on simply Safe's biggest sale of
- 9:40Speaker 1: the year, sixty percent off. Our listeners get sixty percent
- 9:45Speaker 1: off a simply Safe home security system at simplysafe dot
- 9:49Speaker 1: com slash bird. That's simplysafe dot com slash bird.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and you teem me up perfectly, because I wanted
- 9:55Speaker 2: to talk a little bit about their defense compared to
- 9:58Speaker 2: the Eagles defense. Just because know, a lot of your
- 10:00Speaker 2: statistics depend on everyone else, especially on defense. So I
- 10:04Speaker 2: think that's a good way to talk about it. But
- 10:06Speaker 2: before we do that, I have a very fun fact
- 10:08Speaker 2: for you.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Oh gooy.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Both the Eagles trades post Michael Carter were the eighteenth
- 10:14Speaker 2: overall pick for in their relative respective drafts.
- 10:20Speaker 1: So Jay R. Alexander was the eighteenth overall pick of
- 10:22Speaker 1: the Packers and Phillips was the eighteenth overall for the Dolphins. Yes,
- 10:26Speaker 1: that's crazy. How about that.
- 10:28Speaker 2: I just wanted to say that one right now. That's
- 10:30Speaker 2: a fun fact. But let's let's go into the actual
- 10:33Speaker 2: substance of stuff really quick.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Okay.
- 10:36Speaker 2: You know, if you look, if you go down on
- 10:39Speaker 2: the chart, you can see a comparison between the Ravens
- 10:43Speaker 2: pass defense and the Eagles pass defense. And I just
- 10:47Speaker 2: think that's worth just discussing because I think it really
- 10:50Speaker 2: depends on you know, your people surrounding you, especially at corner.
- 10:55Speaker 2: I think corner is a really important position that is
- 10:57Speaker 2: dependent on you know, the pressure, dependent on everybodybody else.
- 11:00Speaker 2: There's a bunch of things. So first off, let's let's
- 11:02Speaker 2: talk about passing yards per game. The Eagles have been
- 11:06Speaker 2: allowing two hundred and fifteen point nine and the Ravens
- 11:09Speaker 2: two thirty two point two. So just with that said,
- 11:14Speaker 2: the Eagles, that's twenty fifth and I'm sorry, that's.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Yes, that's that might.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Be Hold on one second, I gotta just check something
- 11:24Speaker 2: because it's it's different than.
- 11:25Speaker 1: What I had on that starts per game.
- 11:27Speaker 3: You're checking, Yeah, yeah, because it's different on what you were.
- 11:30Speaker 1: About to say was correct. But I mean we can
- 11:31Speaker 1: we can recheck the rankings again.
- 11:33Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure it is correct. I just wanted to
- 11:36Speaker 3: check really quick.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Yeah, no problem, Oh right, because it's defense. Yet never mind,
- 11:40Speaker 2: I I was looking at our offense. I'm like, that
- 11:42Speaker 2: doesn't sound right. Yeah, so our path the Eagles pass
- 11:46Speaker 2: defense has been to I just want to see where
- 11:50Speaker 2: that is relative to everyone else, and that is.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Twenty fifth is what they are in passing our drive
- 11:55Speaker 1: belief seventeenth actually, oh seventeenth, okay, so twenty fifth would
- 11:59Speaker 1: be their all. That's that's what got me too.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Oh yeah, for a quick second, I want to make
- 12:04Speaker 2: sure that always we're given the right you know, I
- 12:08Speaker 2: hit the same button.
- 12:09Speaker 1: So yeah, seventeen.
- 12:10Speaker 3: I had a little mini you know, did I get it?
- 12:12Speaker 3: I did not get it wrong.
- 12:14Speaker 2: I just we're good, all right, So seventeen seventeenth, just
- 12:18Speaker 2: because I wanted to give context to it. Yeah, the
- 12:22Speaker 2: pass yards per play Eagles is six point one the
- 12:25Speaker 2: Ravens six point two. Not a huge difference there, huge
- 12:28Speaker 2: difference in the passing touchdowns allowed Eagles eight Ravens twenty,
- 12:34Speaker 2: and a huge difference in the EPA per pass soles
- 12:38Speaker 2: are negative zero point one nine. Remember negative is really
- 12:41Speaker 2: good for defense. You don't want it to be positive.
- 12:44Speaker 2: And the Ravens are closer to that zero market negative
- 12:46Speaker 2: zero point zero four. And then importantly the time to
- 12:49Speaker 2: pressure Eagles at two point five to one and the
- 12:52Speaker 2: Ravens at two point six to three. So it just
- 12:55Speaker 2: means that the Eagles pressure is getting there faster they
- 12:58Speaker 2: are being They're better past defending team in general, both
- 13:02Speaker 2: on EPA and yards per game allowed. So I think
- 13:07Speaker 2: that those are important contextual details that have impacted to
- 13:12Speaker 2: some extent Guy Alexander's performance. And again we talked about
- 13:16Speaker 2: how the Ravens defense got better, so these statistics actually improved,
- 13:20Speaker 2: So when JayR.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Alexander was on the field, they were actually probably worse.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Right, So I guess what we could kind of gleaned
- 13:28Speaker 1: from this is a little bit is maybe in a
- 13:30Speaker 1: if his conditioning gets better and within a better environment,
- 13:36Speaker 1: then maybe you get what we were talking about, that
- 13:38Speaker 1: eighty percent of the player that he used to be
- 13:40Speaker 1: and you've benefited.
- 13:42Speaker 3: From that exactly. That's the thought process. And again, you know,
- 13:47Speaker 3: best case.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Scenario he does return to that former turned to eighty
- 13:50Speaker 2: percent of that form. Whatever that number is, Like, we're
- 13:52Speaker 2: just putting a number out there, and that would be
- 13:54Speaker 2: a solid outside corner that you would be pretty happy
- 13:57Speaker 2: with that.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Yeah. One thing that I'm going to introduce also so
- 14:01Speaker 1: conceptually here just which might explain some of those numbers
- 14:04Speaker 1: is anybody who's watched the Ravens not only knows that
- 14:07Speaker 1: they've had a lot of injuries, but they lost non Dematabik,
- 14:11Speaker 1: who's a really good interior pass rusher. They've really struggled
- 14:14Speaker 1: to generate a pass rush, so they had to blitz
- 14:18Speaker 1: a lot more than the Ravens typically blitz. In fact,
- 14:22Speaker 1: their blitz percentage according to Pro Football Reference is I
- 14:27Speaker 1: have it as tenth right here at twenty five point six,
- 14:29Speaker 1: and that's pretty high for them. They are they're usually
- 14:32Speaker 1: a front four, they're like the Eagles. They're usually a
- 14:34Speaker 1: front four dominant team, a pass rush dominant team. They're
- 14:37Speaker 1: not afraid to blitz, but it's not really what they've done,
- 14:41Speaker 1: but because they've had to, it's probably put their corners
- 14:44Speaker 1: and defensive backs in not the best categories. And as
- 14:48Speaker 1: your time to pressure shows, they haven't really been getting
- 14:51Speaker 1: to the quarterback even with their blitzing as much as
- 14:54Speaker 1: they'd like to, or as fast as quickly as they'd
- 14:57Speaker 1: like to. So now you put Jero Alexander in a
- 15:00Speaker 1: better defense that might have just upgraded, well definitely just upgraded.
- 15:03Speaker 1: It's pass rush with Jalen Phillips, and you start to
- 15:07Speaker 1: like you can see I guess the way the wheels
- 15:09Speaker 1: turned in Howie's head where maybe you get something better
- 15:12Speaker 1: because of that.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Just so you know, the Ravens are we're twenty sixth
- 15:17Speaker 3: pre and blitz in the year before.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Yeah, great, So so that just shows you the extremes
- 15:23Speaker 1: that they've had to go through to get pressure generation
- 15:26Speaker 1: this year. And the Eagles are also higher in their
- 15:30Speaker 1: blitz percentage this year. You know, I think VIC ended
- 15:33Speaker 1: last year around somewhere between nineteen and twenty one percent.
- 15:36Speaker 1: And I know this year, it's up because they also
- 15:38Speaker 1: have struggle. They're at throughout twenty two to twenty three percent.
- 15:42Speaker 3: We're at nineteen point three and twenty twenty four.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Right, yeah, and so they're up, plus their man coverages
- 15:47Speaker 1: up as well. But that might actually I think the
- 15:51Speaker 1: idea is that goes back to normal now that they
- 15:53Speaker 1: add jal and Phillips, who will talk about in a second.
- 15:56Speaker 1: And again that's just if you can play more zone
- 15:58Speaker 1: and blitz last, that helps your your corners out.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Yeah, they're at twenty three point six this year. Yes,
- 16:04Speaker 3: you're absolutely right.
- 16:05Speaker 2: And another thing that is important with that context is
- 16:09Speaker 2: because they are blitzing so much, you don't have as
- 16:13Speaker 2: much help in other coverage shells. I mean, one of
- 16:15Speaker 2: the benefits of not blitzing is that you have more
- 16:18Speaker 2: guys in space to cover, particularly when you're in zone,
- 16:22Speaker 2: but also when you're in man you have safeties and
- 16:25Speaker 2: other people that can help in different actual zones and
- 16:28Speaker 2: that helps significantly.
- 16:30Speaker 3: So when you blitz, you have less people that can support.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Right, absolutely, That's why Vic Fangio is famous for not
- 16:38Speaker 1: throwing a single blitz at the at the Chiefs in
- 16:41Speaker 1: the Super Bowl, and look how that worked out right. Hey,
- 16:44Speaker 1: Philly fans. Game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic, long lines,
- 16:49Speaker 1: We've all been there, But when it comes to your cannabis,

- 17:07Speaker 1: Din Apothecary is all about the guest experience. Their staff
- 17:11Speaker 1: makes sure you feel taken care of every time you

- 17:29Speaker 1: even show love to the community with specials for fans, students,
- 17:34Speaker 1: service members, and healthcare pros. Cam Den Apothecary top quality cannabis,
- 17:39Speaker 1: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans. Twenty
- 17:42Speaker 1: one and up. Let's move on to Jalen Phillips and
- 17:46Speaker 1: as you have it here, the Eagles give up a
- 17:48Speaker 1: third round pick now they had two, which is why
- 17:50Speaker 1: Howie Roseman gets a lot of credit for not having
- 17:52Speaker 1: to ever bankroll the future. Right, he had two third
- 17:56Speaker 1: round picks to begin with, and so from the Jets
- 17:59Speaker 1: trade of a Hassan reddick that a lot of people
- 18:01Speaker 1: have forgotten about, and so they still have a third
- 18:04Speaker 1: round pick and just get rid of this one.
- 18:07Speaker 2: And they kept the Jets third round pick, which is
- 18:10Speaker 2: notable because it would be considerably better pick.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Yes, and the Jets are off to a terrible start,
- 18:15Speaker 1: and there are probably not within the trades that they
- 18:17Speaker 1: just made, probably not going to win too many more
- 18:19Speaker 1: games the rest.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Of the year anyway.
- 18:21Speaker 2: So yeah, you're absolutely right. So this this trade again,
- 18:25Speaker 2: you teed it up perfectly. But let's look at that
- 18:28Speaker 2: edge room really quick. You see a lot of red
- 18:31Speaker 2: on there. Yes, never feel good when you see a
- 18:33Speaker 2: lot of red on my charts.
- 18:35Speaker 3: Just in general.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Your red is not all just like poor stats, but
- 18:41Speaker 1: like injuries too, and environments. Yeah, you have a you
- 18:45Speaker 1: have a cancel out for those who are just listening
- 18:47Speaker 1: and can't see the color. There's there's like not only red,
- 18:50Speaker 1: but there's like these almost like a teacher's you know,
- 18:54Speaker 1: red penning through like Zadarius Smith like you're gone, dude.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks for contributing.
- 19:01Speaker 2: So what is interesting though, is I mean, you look
- 19:03Speaker 2: at these statistics and if you ignore Phillips, I mean
- 19:07Speaker 2: you don't have as much production. But when you put
- 19:10Speaker 2: Phillips in there, it's all green. Almost everything is green.
- 19:13Speaker 2: He immediately becomes your best pass rusher immediately. Right, It's
- 19:17Speaker 2: kind of interesting. And this is not a sample sized
- 19:19Speaker 2: thing at all. Right, you look at the pass rushes.
- 19:22Speaker 2: He has the most out of everybody in the entire
- 19:25Speaker 2: room at one eighty one.
- 19:26Speaker 1: This isn't incredible because this would actually be considered not
- 19:30Speaker 1: I don't want to call it a down year for
- 19:32Speaker 1: Jaen Phillis, but you know, coming back from the two
- 19:34Speaker 1: major injuries he's had last years, it's his numbers aren't
- 19:37Speaker 1: what they were, say, prior to those to when he
- 19:39Speaker 1: played for VIC a couple of years ago, when he
- 19:41Speaker 1: was set in the world on fire, and yet he's
- 19:44Speaker 1: still green compared to the rest of the Eagles pass
- 19:47Speaker 1: rush here.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, listen, you're right, those injuries are tough.
- 19:49Speaker 2: I mean the torn achilles in twenty three and the
- 19:51Speaker 2: partially torn acl and twenty four.
- 19:53Speaker 3: There's are tough injuries. To come back from.
- 19:55Speaker 2: But he's getting healthier, he's in a scheme that he's
- 19:59Speaker 2: thrived in, and he immediately becomes your best pass rusher immediately.
- 20:03Speaker 2: It is it's a That's why I feel really good
- 20:05Speaker 2: about this trade.
- 20:06Speaker 3: I mean, you look at it. He's had the most hurries,
- 20:10Speaker 3: he's had the most sacks, which is not that special
- 20:13Speaker 3: because you look and there's not that many sacks in
- 20:15Speaker 3: his edge room.
- 20:16Speaker 2: Zarias Smith was leading the room as a retired player
- 20:19Speaker 2: and hasn't played for the last like two or three weeks,
- 20:23Speaker 2: which is never good. He would lead in pressures, he
- 20:26Speaker 2: leads in pass rush per pressure.
- 20:28Speaker 3: He leads.
- 20:29Speaker 2: He leads in win rate significantly nineteen point three. Huge elite,
- 20:34Speaker 2: absolutely elite win rate. Everybody else is in the single digits.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Nobody else is in the double digits. And also really
- 20:42Speaker 2: good get off at zero point eighty six. Ogbo Acar
- 20:47Speaker 2: Kwonkuo has the best win rate, I mean best get
- 20:51Speaker 2: off at zero point six. But he's only had two
- 20:53Speaker 2: pass rush opportunities, so I'm not sure that's particularly fair
- 20:57Speaker 2: or accurate.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Yeah, if you took away the guys who were retired
- 21:03Speaker 1: Zaria Smith and on Ir and you just made this,
- 21:06Speaker 1: and even Patrick Johnson since he's not in the fifty
- 21:08Speaker 1: three anymore. If you've just made this about the top
- 21:11Speaker 1: three of Phillips, Hunt, and Ucha, then I'm pretty sure
- 21:15Speaker 1: Jalen Phillips gets almost a clean sweep in every single category.
- 21:19Speaker 1: The only thing he doesn't have more than is quarterback hits,
- 21:23Speaker 1: of which jalal Ex Hunt has seven and Phillips has four.
- 21:26Speaker 1: But every other category he would be the winner.
- 21:28Speaker 3: I believe. Yep, you're absolutely right.
- 21:31Speaker 1: Well, that tells you something, doesn't it.
- 21:33Speaker 3: It does tell you something.
- 21:34Speaker 1: I'm I'm glad you put together the right Side column
- 21:38Speaker 1: for people who are just listening. You know, it starts
- 21:42Speaker 1: off with giving the hurries, the hits, the sacks and
- 21:44Speaker 1: the pressures and showing how much more Jalen Phillips has
- 21:47Speaker 1: than the rest. But we always say, Sam and I
- 21:50Speaker 1: both always say sometimes those can be misleading. If you
- 21:52Speaker 1: have three times as many pass rushes as somebody else,
- 21:56Speaker 1: then your stats are of course they're gonna look better.
- 21:58Speaker 1: But what is your rate?
- 21:59Speaker 3: Right?
- 22:00Speaker 1: The fact that he wins in pass rush for pressure
- 22:03Speaker 1: or wait no a yeah right, yeah yeah pass rush yes?
- 22:09Speaker 1: Meaning how many times is the pressure on a pass rush.
- 22:12Speaker 1: He wins in that he wins in. His win rate
- 22:14Speaker 1: again for those who can only listen, is nineteen percent.
- 22:18Speaker 1: The next highest is a Jaylex Hunt at nine percent,
- 22:22Speaker 1: a little less than nine percent and at eight and
- 22:25Speaker 1: a half. So you're talking about a guy who more
- 22:28Speaker 1: than double and almost tripling the win rate of the
- 22:31Speaker 1: other two guys. So I think that's really impressive.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Yeah, so honestly best trade that they've made, honestly this year.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Yep, I would agree, now, I would, we could, we
- 22:43Speaker 1: could have taken a deeper dive if we want to
- 22:45Speaker 1: do Sam, But I didn't, you know, I asked you
- 22:47Speaker 1: for just the just the the stats that we normally
- 22:50Speaker 1: go to. Phillips plays inside quite a bit against in
- 22:54Speaker 1: Miami's defense because they have Chop Robinson, Penn State and
- 22:59Speaker 1: and Bradley Chuck. So I don't think he's gonna occupy
- 23:02Speaker 1: that kind of a role in Vic Fangio's defense here
- 23:05Speaker 1: because they just need more from their edges and they
- 23:07Speaker 1: have pretty good interior pass rushers. But I would probably wonder,
- 23:11Speaker 1: like how much when you put a great pass rusher
- 23:14Speaker 1: like that inside against guards, does that help inflate the
- 23:17Speaker 1: win rate and they get off a little bit. That
- 23:18Speaker 1: would be the only thing I'd be I'd wonder about that.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Yeah, probably, uh, it probably would factor in.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Yeah, not enough to say that, you know, nineteen percent
- 23:29Speaker 1: compared to the you know eight point eight and eight
- 23:31Speaker 1: point five or it is just like it's like misleading.
- 23:34Speaker 1: It's not. It's not misleading. He's just not even a
- 23:36Speaker 1: pass rusher.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Even if it regresses, you would still take oh yeah,
- 23:40Speaker 2: even a five percent decrease, you feel really good about.
- 23:42Speaker 1: So right, Hey, I still like a good night out,

- 25:12Speaker 1: What is again, what is considered an elite win rate
- 25:15Speaker 1: for an edge wresher?
- 25:16Speaker 3: Yes, I have those statistics.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Give me one second. I want to say exactly the
- 25:21Speaker 2: right thing, So give me one second. No problem for
- 25:24Speaker 2: an edge you typically want. So what what I have
- 25:30Speaker 2: is poor is less than seven percent, average is ten
- 25:33Speaker 2: to fifteen and elite is.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Like twenty Okay, so he's right on the cusp of
- 25:37Speaker 1: being you know, above average to elite there.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Which is better than anything that they had. So absolutely,
- 25:43Speaker 2: and honestly, if you're saying that he played on the inside,
- 25:47Speaker 2: you know that number goes down a little bit.
- 25:49Speaker 3: Elite is closer to fifteen percent.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Right right, all right, another Dolphins Eagles comparison. This is
- 25:57Speaker 1: the same thing that we did with the corners, where
- 25:59Speaker 1: I'm starting to the defense, the pass defense, but now
- 26:02Speaker 1: the pass rush. I guess correct.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's the same statistics pretty much, I
- 26:06Speaker 2: mean exactly, but it's just comparison, right, I mean.
- 26:10Speaker 3: That should not say Ravens Dolphins. It had the right colors,
- 26:15Speaker 3: just not the right na.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Basically, what's important here Dolphins actually allowing less pass yards
- 26:22Speaker 2: per game at one ninety eight point one.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it's because you can run for two hundred yards
- 26:27Speaker 1: against them, if you want to exactly.
- 26:29Speaker 2: They've been awful against in their run defense. Yeah, teams
- 26:33Speaker 2: have been taking advantage of that. But and that's what
- 26:35Speaker 2: I was going to go to with The second point
- 26:36Speaker 2: is their yards per play is six point eight, which
- 26:40Speaker 2: is a significant difference from six point one that the
- 26:42Speaker 2: years allowing they almost double in past touchdowns allowed. Eagles
- 26:48Speaker 2: have allowed eight, Dolphins have allowed fifteen, and then their
- 26:52Speaker 2: EPA per pass is jarring. The Eagles are at minus
- 26:57Speaker 2: zero point one nine, as we said, and the Dolphins
- 26:59Speaker 2: aren't plus zero point one five. So it's not like
- 27:02Speaker 2: you can't beat them by passing. And teams have been
- 27:05Speaker 2: and they've been, you know, leading to scores every time
- 27:07Speaker 2: they pass against them. And then interestingly, their time to
- 27:11Speaker 2: pressure is slower than the Eagles, which honestly leads me
- 27:16Speaker 2: to a bigger point about the Eagles pass rush is
- 27:18Speaker 2: they're getting pressures, they're just not getting Sacks's that's where
- 27:22Speaker 2: I would I would say, and I think getting a
- 27:24Speaker 2: guy like Phillips gives you an opportunity to convert those
- 27:27Speaker 2: pressures into sacks.
- 27:29Speaker 1: I imagine that was the whole point, right of Howie
- 27:32Speaker 1: Roseman making that move, thinking that he's got something that
- 27:36Speaker 1: will add to what he has, which is probably better
- 27:38Speaker 1: than it might look on paper. But when you add
- 27:41Speaker 1: somebody like Jenlen Phillips, it's like the rising tide lifting
- 27:44Speaker 1: all the ships. Like everybody benefits from that end. I'll
- 27:48Speaker 1: leave it to this and when he had his very
- 27:51Speaker 1: good year under Vic two years ago before the injury.
- 27:54Speaker 1: He was playing really well. So was Christian Wilkins, the
- 27:59Speaker 1: big interier pass rusher who had nine sacks that year.
- 28:02Speaker 1: So if you put Jalen Phillips on the line that
- 28:05Speaker 1: has a really good interior pass rusher, like I don't know,
- 28:09Speaker 1: Jalen Carter, then it probably leaves a lot of one
- 28:12Speaker 1: on ones more so than Jail Phillips was probably seeing
- 28:15Speaker 1: this year with not a whole lot of interior pass
- 28:19Speaker 1: rush on that Dolphins d line.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Absolutely, And I think that's a great point. And I think,
- 28:23Speaker 2: you know, just make each other better. That's at the
- 28:25Speaker 2: end of the day, that's what you're trying to do.
- 28:26Speaker 1: So that's right, Okay, great stuff. That is our trade
- 28:30Speaker 1: deadline recap. In our next episode, we're going to recap
- 28:33Speaker 1: the Eagles five major themes analytically of the first half
- 28:37Speaker 1: as they get ready for the second half of the season.
- 28:40Speaker 1: That'll do it for this episode of Inside the Data
- 28:42Speaker 1: for Sam Finkel, I'm Jeff Mosher. We'll catch you all
- 28:45Speaker 1: on the next one.
