- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Cantonese with Fexingo! I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna! Episode 23 — can you believe it? Lucas: I know, time flies. And today we're tackling something super practical. Luna: Ooh, I love practical. What is it? Lucas: Asking for directions. Specifically, how to ask where the toilet is, and how to understand simple responses like 'turn left', 'turn right', and 'go straight'. Luna: That is extremely practical. Especially the one about the toilet. Lucas: Exactly. So let's start with the most important question: 'where is the toilet?' In Cantonese, that's: 廁所喺邊度. Luna: 廁所喺邊度. Lucas: Good. Let's break it down. 廁所 means toilet. 喺邊度 means where is. So literally, 'toilet where is'. Luna: Got it. 廁所 is toilet. 喺邊度 is where is. 廁所喺邊度. Lucas: Perfect. Now imagine you're in a mall in Hong Kong and you need to find the restroom. Luna: Okay, I'm there. I ask: 廁所喺邊度? Lucas: Yes! And the person might say: 轉左, 轉右, or 直行. Luna: Okay, let's take those one at a time. First, 轉左. Lucas: 轉左 means turn left. 轉 is turn, 左 is left. Luna: 轉左. Lucas: Good. Now turn right: 轉右. 右 is right. Luna: 轉右. Lucas: And go straight: 直行. 直 means straight, 行 means go. Luna: 直行. Lucas: Great. Now let's put it together. I'll be the direction-giver, you ask the question. Luna: Okay. 廁所喺邊度? Lucas: 轉左. Luna: So I turn left. Got it. Lucas: Now try with turn right: 轉右. Luna: 廁所喺邊度? Lucas: 轉右. Luna: Okay, turn right. Lucas: And go straight: 直行. Luna: 廁所喺邊度? Oh wait, that was a question. Lucas: Right, so I answer: 直行. Luna: 直行. So I go straight. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's do a little scene. Imagine you're at a museum. Luna: Ooh, classy. I'm at a museum. Lucas: You need the toilet. You see a guard. Luna: Excuse me, 廁所喺邊度? Lucas: The guard says: 轉左然後直行. Luna: Turn left then go straight. Got it. Say that again? Lucas: 轉左然後直行. 然後 means 'then'. Luna: 轉左然後直行. Turn left then go straight. Lucas: Yes! So you turn left, walk straight, and there's the toilet. Luna: I love that. So useful. Lucas: Let's practice each direction phrase one more time. Repeat after me: 轉左. Luna: 轉左. Lucas: 轉右. Luna: 轉右. Lucas: 直行. Luna: 直行. Lucas: And the question: 廁所喺邊度? Luna: 廁所喺邊度? Lucas: Awesome. Now you're ready to find any toilet in a Cantonese-speaking place. Luna: Or ask for directions to anything, really. I could say 地鐵站喺邊度? for where's the MTR station, right? Lucas: Exactly! 地鐵站喺邊度? — where's the subway station. You can replace 廁所 with any place. Luna: That's so handy. So 廁所喺邊度? is just the template. Lucas: Right. And the answers are the same: 轉左, 轉右, 直行. Luna: I feel so much more confident now. Lucas: That's the goal. Let's do one more full practice. I'll ask you: 廁所喺邊度? Luna: 轉左? Lucas: Yes, you're the direction-giver now. But you asked a question — you need to answer. Luna: Ohhh. Okay, you ask me: 廁所喺邊度? Lucas: 廁所喺邊度? Luna: 轉右! Lucas: Perfect! And now I turn right. See? You're a natural. Luna: Aww, thanks. So today's phrases: 廁所喺邊度, 轉左, 轉右, 直行. Lucas: That's it. Four phrases, but they open up so much. Luna: Totally. And remember, practice makes perfect. Say them out loud, even when you're just walking around. Lucas: Great tip. And if you're ever lost, just ask: 廁所喺邊度? Luna: Even if you don't need the toilet. It's a good conversation starter. Lucas: That's true. Alright, that's all for today. Thanks for learning with Fexingo. Luna: See you next time! Practice these phrases till we chat again. Lucas: Bye bye! Luna: 拜拜!
