Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: On Having The Grace To Deviate From the Plan
Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: Hey, hey, everybody, Emily a body here. You are listening
- 0:24Speaker 1: to five Minute Friday. I want to talk to you
- 0:27Speaker 1: this week about pulling out of a workout. I get
- 0:31Speaker 1: so many questions about motivation, how to get started, how
- 0:35Speaker 1: to show up, how to do things when you just
- 0:37Speaker 1: don't feel like doing them, And oftentimes.
- 0:40Speaker 2: My tip to that is just start.
- 0:43Speaker 1: You'll be so surprised what happens when you get through
- 0:46Speaker 1: the process of putting on your sneakers or throwing on
- 0:49Speaker 1: that sports bra, putting on your leggings or your shorts
- 0:52Speaker 1: or whatever, and just begin, because that in itself is
- 0:57Speaker 1: a massive hurdle. But what happens on the days where
- 1:01Speaker 1: you do begin and you stick it out for those
- 1:03Speaker 1: five minutes, those ten minutes and it's just not clicking. Well,
- 1:07Speaker 1: that's exactly what happened to me last weekend. I got
- 1:10Speaker 1: back to the city from Father's Day. I spent a beautiful,
- 1:14Speaker 1: beautiful evening in Connecticut with my dad, and I laced
- 1:18Speaker 1: up to go for my run. And as of recent
- 1:23Speaker 1: I have been doing my interval runs, which are at
- 1:27Speaker 1: this point in my training two minutes on, two minutes off,
- 1:30Speaker 1: repeat for five rounds. I've been doing that on the treadmill,
- 1:33Speaker 1: and week by week I've been seeing progress and getting
- 1:36Speaker 1: a little bit faster, and it feels really good. Okay,
- 1:40Speaker 1: but this week I decided to take it outside and
- 1:44Speaker 1: so I did my first s rep and I looked
- 1:46Speaker 1: down and it's faster than I.
- 1:48Speaker 2: It'ssibated.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I did my second rep and it felt hard, and
- 1:52Speaker 1: I looked down and it was faster than I.
- 1:54Speaker 2: It dissibated.
- 1:55Speaker 1: And so halfway through my third rep, as I felt
- 1:58Speaker 1: like the heat was getting to me, I'm running later
- 2:00Speaker 1: than I usually do, I just made the call that
- 2:03Speaker 1: I wasn't going to push through it. It didn't feel
- 2:06Speaker 1: right for me. And so in that moment, rather than
- 2:10Speaker 1: be hard on myself, rather than judge myself, I chose grace.
- 2:15Speaker 1: I chose the concept that there's tomorrow, and most importantly,
- 2:21Speaker 1: I chose to.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Not get worked up about it. Listen.
- 2:24Speaker 1: That's not to say that every time something like this happens,
- 2:27Speaker 1: I'm gonna say yes, bow out, duck out. It is
- 2:29Speaker 1: the time perfect. Maybe not, but for me, in this moment,
- 2:34Speaker 1: it did feel right, and I was happy that I listened.
- 2:37Speaker 1: And the next day I got up and I put
- 2:40Speaker 1: my sneakers on and I got started, and I did
- 2:43Speaker 1: the workout as it was intended in its entirety, and
- 2:48Speaker 1: that's it. And then I moved forward. Right, It's not
- 2:51Speaker 1: the end of the world if you have to change
- 2:54Speaker 1: the plan. That is why so often we hear this
- 2:56Speaker 1: phrase that training plans are meant to be written in pencil.
- 3:00Speaker 1: This is a lesson that is applicable in so many ways,
- 3:04Speaker 1: so much farther than running some days, all you can
- 3:08Speaker 1: do is the best you can with what you have,
- 3:11Speaker 1: and that is enough. Even if it looked different the
- 3:14Speaker 1: day before or the week before. That is oh okay,
- 3:18Speaker 1: It is okay to change the plan. Listen to your gut.
- 3:23Speaker 1: I promise you'll never regret it. My prompt for you
- 3:27Speaker 1: this week, what is one area of your life that
- 3:31Speaker 1: you could use a pivot in and what would that
- 3:34Speaker 1: pivot look like? What is one area of your life
- 3:37Speaker 1: that you may need to have a little grace with
- 3:40Speaker 1: yourself take a little bit of a pivot and what
- 3:43Speaker 1: would that pivot entail? And now a listener question.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Hi, Emily, I was wondering if you could share more
- 3:50Speaker 3: about your life coaching certification. I know you've talked about
- 3:53Speaker 3: it in your stories and previously on the pod, but
- 3:55Speaker 3: I wanted to dive in deeper and just ask if
- 3:58Speaker 3: how you knew it was the right move for you.
- 4:00Speaker 3: I have a few different health and wellness certifications, and
- 4:02Speaker 3: I spent a lot of time between twenty twenty and
- 4:05Speaker 3: twenty twenty one working with a handful of clients, but
- 4:07Speaker 3: it kind of fell off my priority list after having
- 4:10Speaker 3: my son in August of twenty twenty one. I've absolutely
- 4:13Speaker 3: loved pouring my heart and my soul into my family
- 4:16Speaker 3: and know a little bit into my day job. But
- 4:18Speaker 3: I just keep feeling this pull that I could be
- 4:20Speaker 3: and should be doing more, not only for others, but
- 4:22Speaker 3: also for myself. Anything you could share on the certification,
- 4:26Speaker 3: how you chose it, which company you went with, and
- 4:29Speaker 3: then mostly how you're using it today and how it
- 4:32Speaker 3: has affected your own life would be so so appreciated.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Thank you, Thank you for this question. It's a good one.
- 4:38Speaker 1: So I did IPACK, which is the Institute of Professional
- 4:41Speaker 1: Excellence in Coaching. It is a Certified Professional Coach certification,
- 4:47Speaker 1: and I chose to become a life coach because I
- 4:50Speaker 1: felt inspired in two ways, first and foremost by the
- 4:53Speaker 1: life coach that I'm working with I was referred to
- 4:55Speaker 1: this life coach by a friend who used her, and
- 4:58Speaker 1: it has been a really helped, full and super transformational
- 5:02Speaker 1: almost two years of us working together. And the second
- 5:05Speaker 1: reason that I chose this specific certification was that in
- 5:08Speaker 1: my experience as a journalist, especially working in the wellness
- 5:10Speaker 1: industry over the last god almost decade, I have always
- 5:15Speaker 1: made it a point to go after education that serves
- 5:19Speaker 1: me in creating the content that can best serve my consumer.
- 5:22Speaker 1: So that is exactly why I became a certified personal trainer,
- 5:27Speaker 1: then a certified run coach, then a Level one Precision
- 5:29Speaker 1: Nutrition certified coach, and now a life coach, so to speak.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I found that through the show You're a Hurdler you
- 5:39Speaker 1: listen to it, I was really dabbling in the self
- 5:43Speaker 1: help space and getting to a place where I was
- 5:46Speaker 1: coaching on career, life, family relationships, and so I felt
- 5:52Speaker 1: as though it was my responsibility to seek out the
- 5:55Speaker 1: education that I could use to speak about these topics
- 5:59Speaker 1: in an extremely responsible manner. Now beyond the show, where
- 6:05Speaker 1: I find myself using a lot of the skills I
- 6:07Speaker 1: learned in this program in my interviewing through open ended
- 6:11Speaker 1: questions and really listening and talking about feeling. I am
- 6:15Speaker 1: also using this one on one with very minimal clients
- 6:20Speaker 1: and in addition in creating the structure that I want
- 6:24Speaker 1: to use moving forward when it comes to hurdler huddles
- 6:27Speaker 1: and coaching opportunities for the community in the future. So
- 6:32Speaker 1: I think that answers all of your questions, But if
- 6:33Speaker 1: there are more questions on life coaching, I would be
- 6:36Speaker 1: more than happy to create an individual Hurdle Moment episode
- 6:40Speaker 1: to answer them. Just like all the other questions, if
- 6:43Speaker 1: you ever have them, feel free to click the link
- 6:46Speaker 1: in the show notes, leave me a voice message, and
- 6:48Speaker 1: pending what happens there, I'm more than happy to create
- 6:52Speaker 1: a special episode. Oh, in the last HitBit, it is
- 6:55Speaker 1: so understandable that you, my fear listener, are looking for
- 7:00Speaker 1: ways to kind of mix it up, pivot again, shift
- 7:03Speaker 1: the plan, change the plan. I'm proud of you for
- 7:07Speaker 1: doing that inner inquiry and asking yourself, what is it
- 7:10Speaker 1: that I need to feel good right now?
- 7:12Speaker 2: It's really beautiful.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Trust your gut, go with that, and also do the research,
- 7:18Speaker 1: which is exactly the phase that you're in right now.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Make sure you're following along with Hurdle over on social
- 7:24Speaker 1: It's at Hurdle podcast, I myself am over at Emily
- 7:27Speaker 1: Abadi another hurdle conquered.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Catch you guys next time.
