Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / From Fans to Bandmates: CHRIS CRESSWELL Talks HOT WATER MUSIC's 30-Year Journey
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Of course, Hi everybody. My name is Chris Creswell. I
- 0:02Speaker 1: sing and play guitar in Hotwater Music and the flat Liners.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Fabulous nice to have you here. It's hard to believe
- 0:09Speaker 2: that Hot Water Music has been around for thirty years now.
- 0:12Speaker 2: How does it feel to have reached such a huge
- 0:14Speaker 2: milestone in the band's career.
- 0:18Speaker 1: It's pretty amazing. I mean, my involvement with the band
- 0:20Speaker 1: started in twenty seventeen, you know, so I have like
- 0:24Speaker 1: a newer kind of look at the last few years
- 0:28Speaker 1: of the band, But before that, I was a massive,
- 0:30Speaker 1: massive fan. I think that's no surprise to anyone who
- 0:33Speaker 1: knows me or my band, the flat Liners. Hot Water
- 0:37Speaker 1: was always a big kind of beacon, you know, for
- 0:40Speaker 1: influence on our band. So it's you know, being able
- 0:44Speaker 1: to join one of your favorite bands is not something
- 0:46Speaker 1: that happens every day, and it's a pretty special thing.
- 0:49Speaker 1: And seeing this band that I love, you know, reach
- 0:51Speaker 1: thirty years is pretty incredible. You know, seeing any band
- 0:55Speaker 1: reach thirty years is is impressive. But when you kind
- 0:58Speaker 1: of learn and know about things, you know, behind the
- 1:01Speaker 1: scenes and everything, and just what these people in this
- 1:04Speaker 1: band have gone through over all those years, it's it's
- 1:08Speaker 1: pretty amazing. The thirty years is here, it's great. I mean,
- 1:10Speaker 1: all the celebrations we've been doing so far on the
- 1:13Speaker 1: road have been it's been great. It's been awesome, awesome.
- 1:17Speaker 2: And speaking of Flat Liners as well and Water Music,
- 1:21Speaker 2: what do you think is the key to keeping these
- 1:23Speaker 2: bands together so long?
- 1:26Speaker 1: You know what, I think it's probably a case by
- 1:29Speaker 1: case scenario, but there is an interesting kind of through
- 1:34Speaker 1: line with both of those bands in that, like, aside
- 1:36Speaker 1: from my addition to Hotwater Music, like the lineups for
- 1:40Speaker 1: these bands has always been one thing, you know what
- 1:44Speaker 1: I mean, Like, no one's really there's been there's been shows,
- 1:47Speaker 1: you know where if you're gigging so much like if
- 1:49Speaker 1: someone's sick or someone has a wedding they can't miss,
- 1:52Speaker 1: or something like life basically around the band like that
- 1:54Speaker 1: will intervene whether you'd like it to or not. And
- 1:56Speaker 1: then you got buddies that fill in and stuff like that.
- 1:58Speaker 1: But like the new of the bands and like them,
- 2:02Speaker 1: you know, these bands writing music and all this kind
- 2:04Speaker 1: of stuff, it's always been this core group of people.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Flats has been the same line up the whole time.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Hotwater has been the same line up the whole time
- 2:10Speaker 1: and then plus me later on, right, So no one's
- 2:13Speaker 1: been removed, you know, like Wallard is still very much
- 2:16Speaker 1: in the band and writing and on records, and it's
- 2:19Speaker 1: just it's beautiful, right. So I think I think a
- 2:24Speaker 1: lot of it is just trusting each other. I think
- 2:27Speaker 1: a lot of where that like longevity of a band
- 2:31Speaker 1: comes from, especially in these scenarios where it's like the
- 2:33Speaker 1: same line up essentially in these ways is trusting each other.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Is communication and really just like making sure your friends
- 2:41Speaker 1: before anything else. That is huge.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I can imagine. So it definitely sounds like you
- 2:47Speaker 2: guys all understand you're all on the same wavelength that
- 2:50Speaker 2: you know, life can get in the way sometimes and
- 2:52Speaker 2: it's all just about how you guys communicate and manage that.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what I mean, Like the wavelength. We
- 2:58Speaker 1: can be on different wavelengths from time to time, of course,
- 3:00Speaker 1: but there is this kind of like common bond. There
- 3:02Speaker 1: is this or maybe it's the it's the you know,
- 3:05Speaker 1: common struggle sometimes too, but it's like it's a thing
- 3:09Speaker 1: that still brings everyone together. And yeah, I think that
- 3:14Speaker 1: it's just it's it's a life that a lot of people,
- 3:17Speaker 1: you know, on the planet would understand because there's a
- 3:20Speaker 1: lot of people in a lot of bands, or just
- 3:22Speaker 1: not even in bands, but working on the road and
- 3:25Speaker 1: everything like that. But there's more people out there that
- 3:27Speaker 1: might not truly understand what goes into it, you know
- 3:29Speaker 1: what I mean. So it's it's a funny way to live.
- 3:31Speaker 1: So when you find your people to kind of roll
- 3:33Speaker 1: through life with doing this weird thing, it's important, like
- 3:37Speaker 1: and it's a lucky thing to be able to get
- 3:39Speaker 1: to hold on to them, you know.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely, vals Mark's another chapter in your long history.
- 3:45Speaker 2: What makes this album stand out to you compare to
- 3:48Speaker 2: the others you've released?
- 3:51Speaker 1: I mean, it is a special thing to get to
- 3:54Speaker 1: release a record in conjunction with a band's thirtieth anniversary,
- 3:58Speaker 1: you know, And and it be so well received, you know,
- 4:02Speaker 1: It's been amazing feeling the love from Hotware music fans
- 4:07Speaker 1: on how they've been connecting with those songs and everything.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know, I can really only truly
- 4:13Speaker 1: speak to the last two records that I've been on, right,
- 4:15Speaker 1: but I think that I could speak for all the
- 4:18Speaker 1: guys when I say that I doubt that anyone in
- 4:23Speaker 1: this band ever thought the band would get to the
- 4:25Speaker 1: thirty year mark, and if and if if they did,
- 4:29Speaker 1: I wonder if you know, anyone would think, like, there's
- 4:33Speaker 1: this banger of a record, this kind of deep into
- 4:35Speaker 1: a catalog. I mean, we're ten records in, you know,
- 4:37Speaker 1: like it's it's pretty wild. It's so much of that
- 4:42Speaker 1: is out of a band's hands. I think so much
- 4:44Speaker 1: of that is in the hands of the fan base,
- 4:47Speaker 1: which you know, for a person like me coming into
- 4:51Speaker 1: the fold later on, everyone has been very supportive of,
- 4:54Speaker 1: you know, and like very nurturing of that situation because
- 4:56Speaker 1: it's a bit of a unique one where you know,
- 4:59Speaker 1: you have a member not touring anymore but still heavily
- 5:01Speaker 1: involved in writing and records and stuff, and having a
- 5:03Speaker 1: new person come in and play those songs live, it
- 5:06Speaker 1: changes a bit of the songs live identity, you know.
- 5:10Speaker 1: But this this fan base, just like the people in
- 5:12Speaker 1: this band and just like the band itself, are pretty resilient,
- 5:16Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And I do have the
- 5:20Speaker 1: ability to like wear like my fan hat first when
- 5:24Speaker 1: I talk about this band, and then like later on,
- 5:26Speaker 1: like put my band member hat on. So I don't
- 5:28Speaker 1: know which part it comes from, but I definitely think
- 5:30Speaker 1: Vows rocks, and I don't know, like we worked our
- 5:36Speaker 1: assets off on those songs, like and I mean it
- 5:39Speaker 1: was a pretty quick turnaround after Feel a Void that
- 5:42Speaker 1: came out in twenty twenty two, you know, and then yeah,
- 5:46Speaker 1: two years later, you know, Vows is out, so and
- 5:49Speaker 1: in between there's a bunch of touring and this and that.
- 5:51Speaker 1: So yeah, it's uh, we definitely worked hard on these songs.
- 5:54Speaker 1: And I think we're just fired up because the band
- 5:58Speaker 1: has the ability to still play for the people that
- 6:00Speaker 1: love their music and still want Like those people that
- 6:02Speaker 1: love the band's music still, I think are are welcoming
- 6:06Speaker 1: and supportive of the band trying new stuff or just
- 6:10Speaker 1: like digging deeper I guess, you know, so yeah, liberating.
- 6:16Speaker 2: In talking about the fans as well, how was your
- 6:18Speaker 2: It sounds like it was pretty positive. But how was
- 6:20Speaker 2: your transition going into the band? Were you well received
- 6:25Speaker 2: at all times?
- 6:26Speaker 1: Or I mean, to be honest, like I think I
- 6:29Speaker 1: can mostly say yeah, I'm sure there's no doubt in
- 6:34Speaker 1: my mind that there's some you know, og hotwater heads
- 6:38Speaker 1: out there who came to the show and like who
- 6:39Speaker 1: is this there? You know what I mean? When they
- 6:41Speaker 1: see me. I totally understand that, I mean, but I
- 6:44Speaker 1: was just at least coming from a place of such
- 6:46Speaker 1: respect for this band and these songs and these albums
- 6:48Speaker 1: and what they mean to not only me, but what
- 6:50Speaker 1: I know they mean to so many other people that
- 6:52Speaker 1: I had to try to do a justice. I had
- 6:54Speaker 1: to try to bring it every night live to just
- 6:58Speaker 1: it's not about me showing people what I can do.
- 7:00Speaker 1: It's about showing people like, these songs are everyone's. These
- 7:03Speaker 1: songs are mine, They're they're yours, they're they're of course
- 7:06Speaker 1: they're this band's first, but they're all of ours, you know, so,
- 7:11Speaker 1: But no, I like, I've never if anyone's been asty
- 7:14Speaker 1: about it, it's never been to my face. So that's okay.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, exactly. Oh good, good to you. You've Oh sorry,
- 7:23Speaker 2: the Australian and New Zealand tour is coming up and
- 7:25Speaker 2: it's been a long time since you've played down Under.
- 7:28Speaker 2: How excited are you to finally return to these countries
- 7:31Speaker 2: after such a long absence.
- 7:33Speaker 1: It's been a long time. Yeah. I think the last
- 7:36Speaker 1: time either band was there was twenty eighteen on different tours,
- 7:41Speaker 1: so it's been a while. No, everyone's excited. I mean
- 7:44Speaker 1: for me personally, getting to do this with both bands
- 7:46Speaker 1: is fun because it feels like I mean I keep
- 7:48Speaker 1: saying about it is true, like it does feel like
- 7:50Speaker 1: my Venn Diagram kind of tour. You know, I'm lucky
- 7:53Speaker 1: that I'm I got both both groups of people there
- 7:56Speaker 1: with me, so that'll be great. And like, yeah, I mean,
- 8:00Speaker 1: no one's bummed to go on tour in Australia, especially
- 8:04Speaker 1: when where we're from is well, at least where I
- 8:07Speaker 1: live in Canada is freezing cold, so you get to
- 8:10Speaker 1: escape winter. But that is certainly beat out by the
- 8:13Speaker 1: fact that coming to Australia is it's great. I mean,
- 8:16Speaker 1: people go off, the shows are always great. Bands are
- 8:19Speaker 1: very well taken care of, you know, like the venues,
- 8:22Speaker 1: bar staff, just like everyone involved. Like I think there
- 8:26Speaker 1: is an innate understanding from everyone at the show's either
- 8:30Speaker 1: just as a fan attending or someone involved with putting
- 8:32Speaker 1: the shows on that like a great deal of travel
- 8:34Speaker 1: has has happened in order for any band to arrive
- 8:37Speaker 1: and play. So, I mean, touring Australia is really it's
- 8:42Speaker 1: its own thing, you know. And I've never been to
- 8:44Speaker 1: New Zealand truthfully, but I'm so excited to finally make
- 8:48Speaker 1: my way there. I have friends from there that are
- 8:50Speaker 1: just stoked that, you know, the bands are going and
- 8:53Speaker 1: it's I know how beautiful it is just from like
- 8:55Speaker 1: pictures I've seen, you know what I mean. So I'm like,
- 8:58Speaker 1: I'm very, very excited to go there for the first time.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Oh awesome. And as you said, you will be playing
- 9:04Speaker 2: in both bands. What's that? Like? Have you done that before?
- 9:08Speaker 2: Like headline headlined with Hot Water Music.
- 9:11Speaker 1: And then we did it a couple months ago Florida
- 9:13Speaker 1: at a festival. There was a European tour kind of
- 9:15Speaker 1: like right after I started playing live with Hot Water
- 9:18Speaker 1: Music that we did that. It's fun. I mean, it's
- 9:21Speaker 1: a it's a marathon, you know what I mean. Like
- 9:23Speaker 1: the there, there's there's a really beautiful part to it
- 9:27Speaker 1: where like I get to just like live my dream,
- 9:29Speaker 1: like just like play a guitar and sing for a
- 9:31Speaker 1: whole night, you know what I mean, with a couple
- 9:33Speaker 1: of different bands. Not everyone gets that opportunity, So that's
- 9:35Speaker 1: really fun. There's also like the realistic side of it
- 9:38Speaker 1: where I'm like I'm on like a pretty like the
- 9:41Speaker 1: nerdy side of it maybe is like I'm on a
- 9:42Speaker 1: pretty like strict like routine kind of like for you know,
- 9:46Speaker 1: just like I don't know, it's there's there's just more
- 9:50Speaker 1: to do. So everything I would do for one band,
- 9:52Speaker 1: I'm now doing twice just in like in like making
- 9:55Speaker 1: sure I'm good for the show warm up routine. Like
- 9:58Speaker 1: singing is a weird thing, so like I know a
- 10:00Speaker 1: lot of singers like don't like you know, the time
- 10:02Speaker 1: you eat, like the time of day you eat is
- 10:05Speaker 1: going to impact your set time, all these like kind
- 10:07Speaker 1: of boring things. But truthfully, it's it's it's more to
- 10:10Speaker 1: think about in the preparation for the show. But the
- 10:14Speaker 1: payoff is is awesome. Yeah yeah, yeah.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Take some talent and some skill I think to be
- 10:19Speaker 2: able to do both especially that's insane.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Well we'll see, we'll see.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Speaking of touring as well, do you guys are you
- 10:29Speaker 2: guys pretty wild behind the scenes or do you like
- 10:32Speaker 2: to relax, chill, recuperate.
- 10:35Speaker 1: I mean, there's like funny things that happen, but like
- 10:37Speaker 1: I think the wild years in terms of like the
- 10:40Speaker 1: big partying on tour and stuff is like not like
- 10:42Speaker 1: behind everyone, but like you can kind of see it
- 10:45Speaker 1: in the rear view still you know, I don't know,
- 10:49Speaker 1: it's just at a certain point, like everyone, like you
- 10:52Speaker 1: get that kind of stuff out of your system. I think,
- 10:55Speaker 1: at least in the in the people I'm talking about
- 10:57Speaker 1: with hot Water and the flat Liners, like I'm getting
- 11:00Speaker 1: this group of people together is really funny, and I
- 11:02Speaker 1: think something that would surprise a lot of people out there,
- 11:06Speaker 1: maybe more about hot Water than Flats because I think
- 11:08Speaker 1: flats have kind of worn a bit of our sense
- 11:10Speaker 1: of humor on our sleeves over the years. But the
- 11:12Speaker 1: people in these bands and especially hot Water music, it
- 11:17Speaker 1: might blow people's minds. I mean, it's like everyone's really funny.
- 11:20Speaker 1: So yeah, like it would really blow people's minds. How
- 11:23Speaker 1: funny Chuck Wagan is, you know what I mean, He's
- 11:25Speaker 1: he's his his forward facing identity as a person in
- 11:29Speaker 1: music and you know, like and fishing and everything like that.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Is like his music's very serious, it's very much from
- 11:35Speaker 1: the heart. You know, his job off the road is
- 11:38Speaker 1: very serious, and he's very much into like conservation and
- 11:41Speaker 1: all these things and used to like hugely important things
- 11:44Speaker 1: to him and you know, the planet. And he was
- 11:47Speaker 1: fucking hilarious behind the scenes too, So it's cool to
- 11:50Speaker 1: learn that. It was really cool to learn that over
- 11:51Speaker 1: the years and that so like, yeah, getting this group
- 11:54Speaker 1: of people together is gonna be really funny, wild party nights.
- 11:58Speaker 1: I don't know, it might all be little tool for
- 12:00Speaker 1: that now. I'm not sure Australia does like kind of
- 12:03Speaker 1: like bring it out in some people, I think, but
- 12:05Speaker 1: I think we'll just be laughing our way through the tour.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Yeah, oh awesome. It also helps I think, you know,
- 12:11Speaker 2: if you can try and rest and recover a bit,
- 12:14Speaker 2: it helps you to put on your best show.
- 12:15Speaker 1: So oh yeah, that is true. I mean that is
- 12:18Speaker 1: really what like, at some point the focus does really
- 12:22Speaker 1: become about the show. I just mean, like when you
- 12:25Speaker 1: start a being when you're really young, you get to
- 12:26Speaker 1: travel the world with your friends, You're working on music
- 12:29Speaker 1: all the time, you're playing music all the time, you're
- 12:31Speaker 1: you're just you're seeing the world in a way that
- 12:33Speaker 1: like it is so bizarre and so cool and beautiful
- 12:36Speaker 1: and kind of unique in these things that like, yeah,
- 12:39Speaker 1: if you have any kind of you know, part of
- 12:41Speaker 1: you that wants to kind of party your way through it,
- 12:43Speaker 1: you can do that for sure. Yeah, but you kind
- 12:45Speaker 1: of like it can definitely get the way of the show.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Sometimes it's always There's been years of you know, evidence
- 12:52Speaker 1: that proves that it doesn't always, but not only just
- 12:55Speaker 1: with our bands. But I think at a certain point
- 12:57Speaker 1: that is like a corner every musician that does it
- 12:59Speaker 1: for a living turns and you're like, well, I mean,
- 13:04Speaker 1: you know, maybe I'm not going to go skateboarding after
- 13:06Speaker 1: the show because I've been drinking, and then like if
- 13:08Speaker 1: I break my wrist like on this tour, yeah, both
- 13:11Speaker 1: bands might be a little a little in trouble.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Yeah, no, imagine. Hot Water Music is known for its
- 13:21Speaker 2: high energy live shows. Are there any songs from the
- 13:24Speaker 2: new album that you're excited to perform live or that
- 13:27Speaker 2: you really love?
- 13:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I'm super stoking the whole album really,
- 13:32Speaker 1: and we've been playing a good number of those songs live.
- 13:34Speaker 1: I mean, Menace, the album opener is definitely like a
- 13:40Speaker 1: set turning point, and there are shows that we're like
- 13:43Speaker 1: open with it, and the turning point is like immediate,
- 13:45Speaker 1: which is kind of a redundant, like a silly thing
- 13:47Speaker 1: to say, but it's just like it shifts this energy
- 13:50Speaker 1: in the room. That's there's something about that song that's
- 13:53Speaker 1: like a that's a definite like Banger live. I mean,
- 13:57Speaker 1: they're all fun to play. It's it's a really interesting
- 14:02Speaker 1: collection of songs, like that record vows just in itself,
- 14:07Speaker 1: and then when you kind of pepper the new stuff
- 14:09Speaker 1: in throughout a band's you know, career spanning set of
- 14:12Speaker 1: thirty years and a lot of different kind of musical
- 14:15Speaker 1: takes and everything like that, it's cool, you know what
- 14:18Speaker 1: I mean, it's it makes for a really cool show.
- 14:22Speaker 1: And yeah, I mean I think we're still learning how
- 14:25Speaker 1: to play like some like relearning how to play some
- 14:26Speaker 1: of those songs live. That's always part of the process
- 14:28Speaker 1: that people might not realize as you write these songs
- 14:31Speaker 1: you record them, and especially in Hot Water Music's case,
- 14:35Speaker 1: because almost everyone in the band is in another band,
- 14:37Speaker 1: you're like you almost kind of drop that information once
- 14:39Speaker 1: it's been recorded. Then like you're I'm off touring with
- 14:42Speaker 1: the Flatliners and Georgia's and the band's souls and Chuck
- 14:44Speaker 1: has a solo thing and everyone kind of comes back
- 14:47Speaker 1: to the table having to like refill their brain with
- 14:50Speaker 1: this information of like, oh, yeah, this song, okay, so
- 14:52Speaker 1: we're gonna play this song for the first time live tonight.
- 14:53Speaker 1: The knew that Okay, so I'm going to relearn that
- 14:56Speaker 1: song right now. I'm gonna sit with it. So there's
- 14:58Speaker 1: a couple that there's a coup that I think will
- 15:01Speaker 1: probably kind of go over on this tour. But it's exciting.
- 15:05Speaker 1: It's like really fun to like relearn that stuff and
- 15:07Speaker 1: just like refamiliarize yourself with that, with that thing you've
- 15:11Speaker 1: just worked on. And it's a beautiful thing about like
- 15:14Speaker 1: playing music is that it's always kind of there for
- 15:16Speaker 1: you to rediscover. And for a band like hot Water
- 15:19Speaker 1: with this many albums and years in the set list,
- 15:23Speaker 1: only the setlist like can only improve and only benefit
- 15:28Speaker 1: from like all those years and all those records. There's
- 15:30Speaker 1: a lot of options, which is amazing.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely, And it sounds like you guys have
- 15:34Speaker 2: something that appeals to fans new and old as well
- 15:37Speaker 2: of every you know.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I think the guys in hot Water,
- 15:40Speaker 1: I mean, Jason is the kind of the guy with
- 15:43Speaker 1: the master plan in terms of well most things honestly
- 15:45Speaker 1: with the band, but with the setlist as well. And
- 15:49Speaker 1: like I especially because of the thirtieth anniversary and the
- 15:53Speaker 1: fact that so far in all the places we've been
- 15:56Speaker 1: able to go on this thirtieth anniversary tour, We've been
- 15:59Speaker 1: seeing a lot of people that have been there like
- 16:02Speaker 1: like almost since day one. You know, it's pretty it's
- 16:04Speaker 1: pretty great. So I just want to you want to
- 16:08Speaker 1: you know, kick it back all the way to the
- 16:11Speaker 1: beginning with some like old jams for the heads, you
- 16:14Speaker 1: know what I mean. It's why not, Like the songs
- 16:16Speaker 1: are awesome. Again, that's my fan hat first, Like they're great,
- 16:19Speaker 1: So I think it's it's probably a different story for
- 16:22Speaker 1: those guys, like it's I'm looking at it as a
- 16:24Speaker 1: fan first, and then you don't play this name like yeah,
- 16:26Speaker 1: hell yea, I want to play that, And then maybe
- 16:27Speaker 1: with the other guys, like I don't know a million
- 16:30Speaker 1: their life, it's there's a different frame of reference, you
- 16:33Speaker 1: know what I mean. But uh yeah, I think like
- 16:36Speaker 1: this band has always done a really good job of
- 16:38Speaker 1: like preserving their past and celebrating it while like always
- 16:43Speaker 1: kind of like marching forward and like finding new musical
- 16:46Speaker 1: ground at the same time. It's cool. Yeah, it's hard
- 16:49Speaker 1: to do.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it. And how did it feel to have
- 16:52Speaker 2: so many incredible guests contribute to vows like Brendan Yates,
- 16:55Speaker 2: Dallas Green, and Daniel Fang. Can you share how those
- 16:58Speaker 2: collaborations came about.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it was. It was super special to have all
- 17:04Speaker 1: those people there. I mean the Dallas one was born
- 17:09Speaker 1: out of just everyone knowing each other for a while.
- 17:12Speaker 1: And the song that we kind of ended up with
- 17:15Speaker 1: in After the Impossible, it just seemed to lend itself
- 17:18Speaker 1: perfectly to a guy like Dallas. Boys, Like his voice
- 17:21Speaker 1: just gets like better all the time. Every time I
- 17:23Speaker 1: see him live, it's better, which is scary almost, you know,
- 17:28Speaker 1: it's really cool. I really I really respect not only
- 17:31Speaker 1: like his talent and ability, just like pure human ability
- 17:34Speaker 1: to like do what he does. But he's on the
- 17:37Speaker 1: road all the time. Yeah, and it's just great. It's
- 17:39Speaker 1: amazing to see. I mean, that was that was a
- 17:44Speaker 1: kind of a no brainer. We were just lucky that
- 17:45Speaker 1: he was available. He's a very busy guy. And then
- 17:48Speaker 1: he was. He was stoked. I mean, I think like
- 17:50Speaker 1: to do it. He we asked him to sing on.
- 17:54Speaker 1: I think we asked him maybe to like do whatever
- 17:56Speaker 1: he wanted, but we had one part of the song
- 17:57Speaker 1: in mind really for him, and then he sang on
- 17:59Speaker 1: the whole song, which was awesome. Yeah, it was great,
- 18:04Speaker 1: and it ended up just so beautiful, and then the
- 18:07Speaker 1: Turnstile connection was just that was so cool. I was
- 18:11Speaker 1: luckily there for when Fang came to the studio in Baltimore,
- 18:15Speaker 1: and that was kind of put together through Brian McTurnan,
- 18:18Speaker 1: who's our friend and produced the album and has produced
- 18:20Speaker 1: many Hot Water records over the years. He produced a
- 18:25Speaker 1: Turnstile record, he produced the first Turnstyle record, NonStop Feeling,
- 18:28Speaker 1: and he's known all those guys for a long time.
- 18:31Speaker 1: And I mean Turnstyle named their band after the Holler
- 18:33Speaker 1: Music song, which was something we learned, you know, a
- 18:37Speaker 1: X number of months or probably years actually I should
- 18:40Speaker 1: say before you know, we were even talking about maybe
- 18:42Speaker 1: having someone from the band like guest on a song.
- 18:45Speaker 1: So there's always just this like swirling possibility of like
- 18:48Speaker 1: maybe something cool could happen. And Fang came over and yeah,
- 18:54Speaker 1: he just like totally killed the extra percussion for that song.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Like it was just so it was amazing to see
- 19:03Speaker 1: him work and like to hear that element that he
- 19:05Speaker 1: brings to Turnstile, which is just like like a dance
- 19:08Speaker 1: influence and just like a roots kind of thing, and
- 19:10Speaker 1: all these instruments you maybe wouldn't expect on a hardcore
- 19:14Speaker 1: album that they pull off so well to have him
- 19:17Speaker 1: be the guy to come in and kind of like
- 19:18Speaker 1: we wanted that. How has kind of done that stuff
- 19:20Speaker 1: in the past too. There's like some drum circle stuff
- 19:22Speaker 1: happening on older songs and everything, and it's always been
- 19:25Speaker 1: a part of you know, those guys musical upbringing, especially
- 19:28Speaker 1: with those early records. It was really cool to see
- 19:31Speaker 1: Fang come in and like just like so cool, so unassuming,
- 19:37Speaker 1: you wouldn't ever think that this guy's in one of
- 19:39Speaker 1: the biggest bands in the world, you know, and seeing
- 19:42Speaker 1: that band's like rise to success is just so cool.
- 19:45Speaker 1: And then Yates come into the fold with something that
- 19:47Speaker 1: no one really saw coming. It was born out of
- 19:50Speaker 1: Fang coming in and doing what he did. I think
- 19:53Speaker 1: Yates and mcturnon were hanging out one day and Yates
- 19:56Speaker 1: was kind of like, oh, maybe what about this kind
- 19:58Speaker 1: of thing? It just had this spark. So everything that
- 20:01Speaker 1: Yate sings through that song was his idea. No one
- 20:04Speaker 1: kind of gave him that. He just took it and
- 20:05Speaker 1: ran with it, which is I mean, if I can
- 20:08Speaker 1: put myself in their shoes, because I can being a
- 20:11Speaker 1: huge fan of this band before being involved. It's a
- 20:14Speaker 1: pretty astounding feeling to be able to leave your mark
- 20:17Speaker 1: on a song by this bandy, you know, and not
- 20:21Speaker 1: everyone gets asked to do that. Not everyone gets the
- 20:23Speaker 1: opportunity to do that. So I know how maybe they
- 20:26Speaker 1: felt when they were able to do it, And it's
- 20:28Speaker 1: that's what music should be, you know what I mean.
- 20:30Speaker 1: There is a lot of sometimes in the music world,
- 20:33Speaker 1: and not only music, but it's I think with the
- 20:36Speaker 1: world in general, kind of drives people to just compete
- 20:38Speaker 1: with one another, whereas music is like it doesn't need
- 20:40Speaker 1: to be that way. It can just be a thing
- 20:42Speaker 1: that celebrated. And it was. Yeah, all the collaborations, I mean,
- 20:46Speaker 1: getting the Thrice guys on a song to sing with
- 20:48Speaker 1: something born out of a long relationship between the Hot
- 20:51Speaker 1: Water guys and Thrice guys and Interrupters, you know, Chuck
- 20:54Speaker 1: has spent a lot of time on the road with
- 20:56Speaker 1: them over the years. It's just like bringing these people
- 20:57Speaker 1: in that we think, like, let's just show the world
- 21:00Speaker 1: what like every one of these people like, well we
- 21:03Speaker 1: can all do together. Yeah, definitely like unity about it.
- 21:07Speaker 1: It's yeah, it was really cool and I mean it's
- 21:10Speaker 1: uh yeah, it's it all kind of came together pretty organically,
- 21:15Speaker 1: and everyone improved. You know, sometimes you never know, like
- 21:18Speaker 1: there is an element of making a record that is
- 21:21Speaker 1: a bit out of your control, and when you open
- 21:23Speaker 1: the door to other folks, you're asking them for a reason,
- 21:27Speaker 1: so it's probably gonna be great, but you still you
- 21:29Speaker 1: don't know. Yeah, I and everyone, everyone killed, everyone improved
- 21:33Speaker 1: the song. Yeah it was cool.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Yeah, it definitely works. They managed to just slip in
- 21:37Speaker 2: there and yeah, make things sound even better, if that's
- 21:40Speaker 2: even possible.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Oh, Chris, I wish we had more time. I'm so sorry,
- 21:46Speaker 2: but touring down under kicking off in Newcastle February fourteenth.
- 21:51Speaker 2: We can't wait to see you there. Chris, thanks so much,
- 21:53Speaker 2: it's been wonderful to chat with you today.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Yeah, you too. Thanks to Mesia, thanks for having me
- 21:57Speaker 1: so much.
