- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome back to Artists on Artists on Artists on Artists.
- 0:07Speaker 1: This week, you watch a movie, but how do you
- 0:12Speaker 1: know that the movie exists? Well, that's something called a
- 0:15Speaker 1: trailer And today we sit down with some people who
- 0:18Speaker 1: know a little bit about that.
- 0:20Speaker 2: The unsung heroes of Hollywood are always behind the camera
- 0:24Speaker 2: and sometimes behind a computer screen, and sometimes so far
- 0:28Speaker 2: away from the movie they haven't seen it until they
- 0:30Speaker 2: edit it together. These trailer house editors work with the
- 0:33Speaker 2: magic of how to market and sell a movie to you,
- 0:38Speaker 2: so you go see it. It's an art form. You
- 0:41Speaker 2: best believe it.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Son coming to a theater near you this summer. Let's
- 0:48Speaker 3: listen in. Are we ready?
- 0:55Speaker 4: Guys? How are you?
- 0:57Speaker 2: I can't wow wow wow. And beer Night.
- 1:02Speaker 4: It feels like beer night.
- 1:03Speaker 5: It feels like like you guys remember beer Knight, who
- 1:05Speaker 5: used to have it like once a week and not.
- 1:09Speaker 6: All the guys of all the different trailer houses. We
- 1:12Speaker 6: get together on.
- 1:13Speaker 4: Beer Night the farmers Market at the Grove.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Yeah, farm Friday, Beer Night.
- 1:20Speaker 7: And then we all went to Tzara after laugh.
- 1:24Speaker 4: We mocked the shirts. You said, I won't fit in
- 1:26Speaker 4: those pretty much.
- 1:27Speaker 5: I pretty much don't wear a shirt unless it is
- 1:29Speaker 5: representing a movie that I like that.
- 1:33Speaker 4: I like talking about the shirt you're wearing.
- 1:34Speaker 5: Now, I mean I wear my Adobe shirt that's pretty
- 1:38Speaker 5: much does not come off me. Yes, like I just
- 1:41Speaker 5: don't really feel like I'm who I am until I
- 1:45Speaker 5: put this thing on.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I mean, of course we'll say your name.
- 1:49Speaker 5: I'm Dave Frank. Been editing trailers for about ten years now.
- 1:54Speaker 5: Over at Trailer Park Boys, predate the show.
- 1:59Speaker 4: You guys do about six months.
- 2:01Speaker 5: By about six months, you.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Guys are ships passing with that show.
- 2:07Speaker 5: Also a Canadian, it's the sort of a Canadian trailer house.
- 2:11Speaker 5: And so yeah, we do. We do beef with the
- 2:13Speaker 5: TV show quite a lot.
- 2:15Speaker 4: You do well that show. I mean, that show is
- 2:17Speaker 4: still kind of around.
- 2:18Speaker 5: I guess it's around on streaming. And you better believe
- 2:20Speaker 5: that the Trailer Park Boys, the real Trailer Park Boys,
- 2:23Speaker 5: work hard to get that pulled off of Netflix and any.
- 2:27Speaker 8: Other Talk about the biggest trailer you have, because you
- 2:31Speaker 8: have one of my favorite trailers.
- 2:32Speaker 5: Oh my gosh. Well, you know, the trailer that kind
- 2:35Speaker 5: of got me into trailers was the Sandlot. Yes, because
- 2:41Speaker 5: the trailer, you know, you watch it and you think
- 2:45Speaker 5: it's all gonna be about the dog. I don't know
- 2:47Speaker 5: if you guys remember, but they made a pretty crazy
- 2:49Speaker 5: choice to make it not very feature baseball.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Not at all. They just kind of circulated the dog.
- 2:55Speaker 5: More so the big scary junk yard dog. And that
- 2:58Speaker 5: was one of the big choices that kind of got
- 3:00Speaker 5: people thinking, a trailer can be weird, a trailer can
- 3:05Speaker 5: to be true that.
- 3:06Speaker 4: I love that trailer because it told me it's okay
- 3:08Speaker 4: to be weird.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:10Speaker 5: Yeah, we're saying that a lot around the around the office.
- 3:14Speaker 5: That's like on the tip.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Of every Yeah, trailer park boys are known for. That's
- 3:18Speaker 2: kind of like the Sloman's lit up in Neon lights.
- 3:20Speaker 2: It's called trailers can't be weird, to be weird.
- 3:23Speaker 5: And then it flashes in between trailers taught me it's
- 3:26Speaker 5: okay to be weird because we can't really decide which
- 3:28Speaker 5: was I love that.
- 3:29Speaker 3: You guys just like found a medium.
- 3:31Speaker 8: In the like a Vegas sign, Like it blinks back
- 3:33Speaker 8: and forth like a woman's leg moving.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Yeah, And that's just in the edit, bab, like no
- 3:38Speaker 1: one really sees this in the outside world.
- 3:40Speaker 5: It's just yeah, incredible. It's dark in there. As you
- 3:43Speaker 5: guys know, you do not want the sunlight.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Oh no, I won't have phones on a lot in
- 3:49Speaker 3: my room.
- 3:50Speaker 2: No, no light, no light, folks, it's just such.
- 3:59Speaker 6: Intros. Move and I can go next.
- 4:01Speaker 3: I'm Todd.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I work here with my buddy at Uh, Trey, let's
- 4:07Speaker 1: get it started, and we are that's sort of a
- 4:11Speaker 1: play on the words.
- 4:12Speaker 2: It's a really fun play because you never say trailer,
- 4:15Speaker 2: you say Trey, let's get it.
- 4:17Speaker 1: We don't want you to sort of homage to the
- 4:20Speaker 1: Black Eyed Peas.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Our favorite band.
- 4:23Speaker 1: We are brothers, we are the premiere, you're pro bros.
- 4:29Speaker 6: And uh, we've been working together for a long time.
- 4:32Speaker 1: We make all the trailers for King Kong, Skull Island
- 4:35Speaker 1: and any movie that looks like that.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Yeah, the big monkey movies.
- 4:40Speaker 6: Yeah, any big monkey movie.
- 4:42Speaker 5: You guys do big monkey as.
- 4:50Speaker 1: We So okay, So we do trailers for big monkeys
- 4:53Speaker 1: and guys who monkey around.
- 4:55Speaker 6: So that's Jack Black.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Yeah. Our wives are friends.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Yeahs, our wives are really good friends.
- 5:07Speaker 6: Let's just say they're.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Good for Just say that. Still not invited to beer night.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Though, that would be literally crazy.
- 5:18Speaker 6: Fuck.
- 5:20Speaker 2: What's up, guys, Let's keep the beer night going. My
- 5:23Speaker 2: name is Chuck, Scottie. I am a big trailer editor.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Trail her to her car, right, we're kind of an indie.
- 5:35Speaker 2: We do a lot of the art film, but we
- 5:37Speaker 2: also love to dip into the Marvel universe, so we'll
- 5:40Speaker 2: do art film in Marvel trailers. Two sides of the
- 5:43Speaker 2: trailer yin Yang Yang, So we have a giant ying
- 5:47Speaker 2: Yang thing with some Buddhist iconography right when you walk
- 5:50Speaker 2: into our trailer house, and it's really fun. You guys
- 5:53Speaker 2: get in trouble a lot for the name sort of
- 5:55Speaker 2: being a little bit distasteful and then also sort of
- 5:58Speaker 2: the appropriation of various like Asian symbols. Yeah, we get
- 6:02Speaker 2: in trouble a lot. We're trying to learn, we're trying
- 6:04Speaker 2: to grow every day. So yeah, unfortunately trail her to
- 6:08Speaker 2: her car. Too late to change it feels like you
- 6:11Speaker 2: can just do it. No, it's a nightmare to change
- 6:14Speaker 2: because the industry knows us. You know, we're working with
- 6:16Speaker 2: Marvel and we're working with a twenty four, you know, and.
- 6:20Speaker 7: Gosh, it's like two sides that's like ballet and hip hop.
- 6:23Speaker 3: It's crazy.
- 6:25Speaker 2: It's crazy because we also have a lot of stuff
- 6:26Speaker 2: to ballet and a lot of stuff to hip hop,
- 6:28Speaker 2: which has been seen as distasteful also.
- 6:31Speaker 5: You know, but still, I gotta say, I'm still pissed
- 6:34Speaker 5: off that you guys didn't get say the Last Dance
- 6:35Speaker 5: because that was fucked up, because it was like you
- 6:38Speaker 5: are the ballet hip hop yea where they come together.
- 6:43Speaker 4: Your reasons Peanut butter for that.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like, yeah, I can be honest because it
- 6:48Speaker 2: seems like a beer night. It fucked us up. Like
- 6:50Speaker 2: for two weeks, my boy Mikey, he like was eating
- 6:55Speaker 2: non stop and the mood in that dark room felt dark.
- 6:58Speaker 2: It was like you had to sit there editing ant
- 7:01Speaker 2: Man two just pissed.
- 7:04Speaker 5: You were pissed all those years later, Say Last Nance
- 7:06Speaker 5: is actually a pretty long time ago, and we are.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Still Less came out when.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Again, I think it was early two thousands.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Yeah, those well, ant Man two has a reference to
- 7:16Speaker 2: say Less Dance, and it pissed us off.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I'm saying that when you edit trailers when you're pissed off,
- 7:21Speaker 1: the trailer ends up looking kind of pissed.
- 7:23Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Yeah, oh my god, we.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Did it for it's complicated.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Yeah, that trailer is like, if you watch it back,
- 7:29Speaker 1: it has like these sort of angry tones.
- 7:31Speaker 4: To it, yeah, and a lot of red flashes.
- 7:34Speaker 5: Yeah, and you can with the way that sort of
- 7:36Speaker 5: snapchat works now and you're able to do face filters
- 7:39Speaker 5: that do find myself running a lot of my trailers
- 7:41Speaker 5: do Snapchat and actually making the characters angry with some.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Of the I've been noticing that.
- 7:48Speaker 3: You can make your your characters feel what you're feeling.
- 7:50Speaker 5: So yeah, so it's like, you know, it's, ah, this
- 7:54Speaker 5: is an older movie. But when Harry met Sally, we
- 7:56Speaker 5: did a re release retrailer that one, and so we
- 7:58Speaker 5: made them mad in that Obviously they're falling in love,
- 8:01Speaker 5: but they sorted they were able to.
- 8:03Speaker 6: Be made Ryan mad.
- 8:06Speaker 2: I made her mad, but you made Billy Cristle the
- 8:10Speaker 2: baby face so he looked.
- 8:12Speaker 5: By which I made the orgasm scene in the cafe
- 8:15Speaker 5: a little bit weird.
- 8:16Speaker 4: But woman Orgasm had a baby.
- 8:18Speaker 2: But again, and that was in the trailer that was
- 8:20Speaker 2: in the record of this trailer.
- 8:22Speaker 5: That trailer focused heavily on that moment.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Well, then I all have what she's having.
- 8:25Speaker 5: Lady was Shrek, yeah, which was she was the Shrek
- 8:29Speaker 5: that comes up from No she was not yeah no
- 8:32Speaker 5: more so she was the lady you know the filter
- 8:35Speaker 5: where you're kind of like under Shrek's sheet, Like, yeah,
- 8:40Speaker 5: she was like filating Shrek and so she can't. She said,
- 8:42Speaker 5: I'll have what she's having, and it was kind of
- 8:44Speaker 5: like double sexy.
- 8:47Speaker 6: Trek already.
- 8:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:51Speaker 8: Yeah, Like it's so incredible. You allow things to be weird,
- 8:55Speaker 8: like you make you let them be weird.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Well what about you, man, come on, spill the beans
- 8:59Speaker 2: on your name and stuff, right, yeah, of course.
- 9:04Speaker 3: The receipts on your name.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Yeah, well I got it. Guys.
- 9:07Speaker 8: I'm I'm I'm I'm Donny Bun the Third and I
- 9:11Speaker 8: am again Donny Bun the Third, and I work.
- 9:15Speaker 4: At Jonathan Taylor Thomas and we do.
- 9:19Speaker 8: I mean, it's annoying because you guys do like a
- 9:21Speaker 8: lot of fun stuff. I do a lot of the
- 9:23Speaker 8: really fucking nasty, crazy horror trailers. Oh yeah, I work
- 9:28Speaker 8: a lot on that Slashers slashers, and I also am
- 9:32Speaker 8: kind of double dipping, you know.
- 9:33Speaker 4: I'm I'm, I'm the editor on a lot of these trailers.
- 9:35Speaker 8: But they also call me the sounder because I figure
- 9:38Speaker 8: out the perfect songs to put on a lot of
- 9:41Speaker 8: these horror trailers. Because I listened to music I love radio.
- 9:44Speaker 8: Radio is like one of my passions listening to the radio.
- 9:47Speaker 4: Oh yeah, truly. Like I have a journal where I
- 9:49Speaker 4: write down, like my favorite songs of the day. You
- 9:51Speaker 4: like music, Yeah, I love music. No way, have we
- 9:55Speaker 4: ever talked about this. No, I love music.
- 9:57Speaker 3: That's insane, that's crazy.
- 9:59Speaker 5: I think it's cool that you love radio because editing
- 10:01Speaker 5: is sort of like it's like a very future, very
- 10:04Speaker 5: twenty first century field, but radio is sort of nineteen twenties.
- 10:07Speaker 2: It is, and you've always sort of like jack FM
- 10:09Speaker 2: has always come across from the nineteen twenties flappers.
- 10:12Speaker 8: I'm just a little bespoke, you know what I mean.
- 10:14Speaker 8: Like I'm just like a little bit kind of a
- 10:17Speaker 8: throwback guy. And I love music and I also reference
- 10:20Speaker 8: sometimes I'll like quote a Fleetwood Nac song when I'm
- 10:23Speaker 8: like hanging out.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Just like talking to someone. It's really weird. It's really weird,
- 10:27Speaker 4: and like that's so weird. It's fun.
- 10:29Speaker 8: But it's fun because I can hear a song and
- 10:31Speaker 8: I can know exactly how to turn that into a
- 10:34Speaker 8: horror song for a trailer, to make it spooky, usually
- 10:38Speaker 8: just making it.
- 10:39Speaker 4: What's the key, it's the key? You make it a minor.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Key, it's pretty easy.
- 10:42Speaker 4: So if you take any general like throw a song out.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Get by with a little help with my friends.
- 10:49Speaker 8: Okay, so it's normally this is the Beatles, right, So
- 10:52Speaker 8: I get by a little help from my friends.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Normal, right. But if I make it a little minor,
- 10:57Speaker 4: I turn it minor. It's I get by with a
- 11:01Speaker 4: little help from my friend.
- 11:02Speaker 5: I know so much about music, crazy.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Insane.
- 11:10Speaker 8: It was scary, yeah, right, and so I would throw
- 11:13Speaker 8: that probably on some sort of horror movie where there's
- 11:16Speaker 8: some like a werewolf, like a good guy.
- 11:21Speaker 5: No friend of mine. Let me just say I would
- 11:23Speaker 5: not get by with any help from a world.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Heard this before.
- 11:29Speaker 6: This guy started on this.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Don't get him.
- 11:34Speaker 6: You'll get it going on.
- 11:35Speaker 5: This for you really hate were wolves? Are not right?
- 11:43Speaker 6: Weren't you asked to do Twilight and you turned it down?
- 11:45Speaker 5: I turned it down? Well, I I kind of pranked
- 11:48Speaker 5: him because I used my snapchat trick to sort of
- 11:50Speaker 5: take it in and send it back. But all their
- 11:52Speaker 5: faces are all fucking stupid, So I said yes when
- 11:55Speaker 5: I pranked them.
- 11:56Speaker 4: Yeah, that.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Kind of like the naughty ones in the trailer.
- 12:01Speaker 4: Yeah, that's why I must be over here.
- 12:03Speaker 7: Right, yeah, yeah, that's crazy.
- 12:09Speaker 4: You're my dog, dude.
- 12:11Speaker 5: Yeah, I love you.
- 12:15Speaker 4: I was gonna be a shake, but I actually prefer
- 12:17Speaker 4: to hug so But.
- 12:18Speaker 5: You know, it's funny what you say about uh making
- 12:22Speaker 5: things in the minor key to make them spooky, because
- 12:24Speaker 5: we actually have a trick at Trailer Parker Boys to
- 12:26Speaker 5: sort of make it prestige. Oh, it's sort of similar.
- 12:31Speaker 5: It's little kids, right, you take the little kids things
- 12:34Speaker 5: are sort of singing the song that normally grown up saying.
- 12:37Speaker 5: But yeah, the little kids are doing it.
- 12:39Speaker 2: You're like a little a little kid choir. You're like
- 12:41Speaker 2: a little kid Catholic choir singing. And we had a
- 12:44Speaker 2: little kid Catholic choir singing, uh, pop that pussy And
- 12:48Speaker 2: it worked perfect for First Cow. That was so good, right,
- 12:53Speaker 2: First Cow.
- 12:53Speaker 8: That movie about Clint Eastood is the president and instead
- 12:56Speaker 8: of a wife, he brings his he's a farmer president.
- 12:58Speaker 4: He brings his cow into the oval off.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Yeah, so First Cow. There's two different A twenty four
- 13:02Speaker 2: movies called First Yeah. One is My First Cow, where
- 13:06Speaker 2: it's a real movie where it's about this first person
- 13:08Speaker 2: that brings a cow to America to start the agriculture industry.
- 13:11Speaker 2: And the second first Cow is when Cleinias would is
- 13:14Speaker 2: a president and instead of bringing his wife, he brings
- 13:17Speaker 2: a cow.
- 13:17Speaker 1: As I heard A twenty four really liked the title
- 13:21Speaker 1: and so they like being for two.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Broke, don't fix.
- 13:25Speaker 5: I heard that Clint Eastwood, you guys know he only
- 13:27Speaker 5: does like two takes. Yeah, but on first Cow, every
- 13:29Speaker 5: time it was a kissing scene with the cow. He
- 13:31Speaker 5: did like twenty five and like it was cool and
- 13:35Speaker 5: I think people were like excited to see him work
- 13:37Speaker 5: in a different way. But it was like, why is
- 13:38Speaker 5: he want to kiss? This is he of.
- 13:40Speaker 4: All movies to stop doing multiple things.
- 13:43Speaker 3: To be like this is where I stopped.
- 13:44Speaker 5: There's a lot of kissing. There was a lot of
- 13:46Speaker 5: hits that cat. But so you put pop that pussy
- 13:49Speaker 5: when he was kissing the couch.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Yeah, choir choir singing pop that pussy. It was it
- 13:54Speaker 2: changed the game. Like, we got a lot of great
- 13:56Speaker 2: feedback from A twenty four. They were popped.
- 13:57Speaker 3: They were psyched, honestly cheaper than a little girl's choir.
- 14:01Speaker 7: Me and my bro over here, Yeah, we get a
- 14:04Speaker 7: synthesizer and.
- 14:05Speaker 3: I just sit on it.
- 14:07Speaker 7: Okay, yeah, sit on it and we put it up
- 14:09Speaker 7: really high pitch.
- 14:10Speaker 6: Yeah, we do all our own composing. Yeah, he just
- 14:13Speaker 6: now he sits on every instrument.
- 14:16Speaker 7: That's if it's a scarier movie, like if Jack Black
- 14:19Speaker 7: is a scary movie, I'll.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Just sit on the synse.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Because he did this thing we knew each other's kids too,
- 14:25Speaker 1: called butt band where he was a one man butt
- 14:27Speaker 1: band for the school talent show. Yeahun just line up
- 14:30Speaker 1: a bunch of instruments on the ground and he just
- 14:32Speaker 1: sit on each one a little bit.
- 14:34Speaker 3: That's where my nickname asshole.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Wondering whole because you're person Nah.
- 14:45Speaker 6: No, he got that from the music thing.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Yeah, so people saw you sitting out your butt, they
- 14:50Speaker 2: started to call you asshole.
- 14:52Speaker 5: So you're able? Is your butt able to know how
- 14:54Speaker 5: to make something spooky? I mean, doesn't your butt accidentally
- 14:57Speaker 5: make something funny sometimes?
- 14:58Speaker 7: Oh well, that is a moment of genius when that happens,
- 15:02Speaker 7: when my butt does that.
- 15:04Speaker 3: But usually just is like.
- 15:07Speaker 7: When I just like sit on the synth because usually
- 15:08Speaker 7: it's just like a synth sound.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:11Speaker 7: But yeah, every once in a while I'll sit on
- 15:14Speaker 7: the synth and Todd over here will start giggling in
- 15:17Speaker 7: the back, and I'll be like, did I just make
- 15:18Speaker 7: a funny sound?
- 15:20Speaker 4: Yeah, he just.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Sits on the synth until I giggle, and then that's
- 15:23Speaker 1: when we know we could stop.
- 15:25Speaker 3: But our wives are friends our lives.
- 15:26Speaker 4: Yeah, totally.
- 15:27Speaker 8: And you keep saying that in some way that you
- 15:29Speaker 8: say you won't elaborate on it, right, No, So.
- 15:33Speaker 6: I mean, like we work together.
- 15:35Speaker 1: We were in the dark all day long, and it's
- 15:39Speaker 1: like it's tough. It's like, you know, you're spending so
- 15:42Speaker 1: much time with one person just working on one thing.
- 15:45Speaker 1: So to get through the day. Just knowing at the
- 15:47Speaker 1: end of the day that our wives are friends changes everything,
- 15:52Speaker 1: Like it just gives us a boosted.
- 15:54Speaker 5: So let me get this straight. When you guys go
- 15:57Speaker 5: to work eight hours a day, they just go eight
- 15:58Speaker 5: hours a day to be friends somewhere.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:00Speaker 7: So they'll do laps around the park with their strollers
- 16:03Speaker 7: and they're such good friends that they won't stop talking.
- 16:06Speaker 5: Don't you feel a little bit like you're over I'm
- 16:08Speaker 5: over here busting my ass to put food on the table.
- 16:10Speaker 5: You're busting your ass to be friends?
- 16:12Speaker 2: A little weird?
- 16:13Speaker 9: Jesus started.
- 16:19Speaker 7: Forget, how does one busterer asked to be friends?
- 16:22Speaker 5: I don't know, it seems like, you know, your wife
- 16:24Speaker 5: are spending a lot of time just like exhausting themselves
- 16:26Speaker 5: around the park, Like how do they have this much
- 16:28Speaker 5: to talk about? Like what's what? What's their chemistry?
- 16:31Speaker 6: Like their chemistry is electric, that's the thing.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Just like like if you just like Mary.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Nancy love each other too, but it's poisonous. But that's
- 16:48Speaker 3: what I'm saying. They have a great time. They're good friends.
- 16:50Speaker 5: But you know, it's funny that you say that because
- 16:52Speaker 5: you don't know the end of the sit In Nancy story.
- 16:54Speaker 5: And I find that so classic trailer editor because for us,
- 16:56Speaker 5: we're interested in the setup. Mill want sit In Nancy,
- 17:01Speaker 5: two lovers who had a blast. You don't care what
- 17:04Speaker 5: happens after.
- 17:06Speaker 2: When I'm editing trailer, I will only ever get to
- 17:10Speaker 2: the climax. I will never finish it. I'll never finish
- 17:12Speaker 2: that climax because I want to be wondering what the
- 17:15Speaker 2: movie is about to when.
- 17:16Speaker 4: I want yeah, oh my god, we're not going to
- 17:18Speaker 4: show the ending anyways. We can't show the ending of
- 17:20Speaker 4: a movie.
- 17:20Speaker 8: I mean, so many people, like my my boss is
- 17:23Speaker 8: always kind of like, oh, you're getting too close to
- 17:25Speaker 8: the end there, like This is a two thirds of
- 17:27Speaker 8: the way through clip, and I can only put those
- 17:29Speaker 8: in the montages where like, oh, someone's face has turned
- 17:31Speaker 8: into a werewolf or whatever.
- 17:32Speaker 4: You know, that's why you have put that man.
- 17:35Speaker 5: But yeah, what the hell are you why?
- 17:38Speaker 4: I guess I got it on the brain. Don't they
- 17:42Speaker 4: keep it like?
- 17:43Speaker 5: They ain't dogs the people, and they ain't got no
- 17:46Speaker 5: place in the life of the mind.
- 17:48Speaker 6: Don't get this guy started.
- 17:50Speaker 4: Sorry, get this guy angry, and I don't want.
- 17:53Speaker 2: To people in your life.
- 17:57Speaker 7: My son had to tell me that Harry Potter doesn't
- 18:00Speaker 7: going to college, and this whole time I thought he
- 18:02Speaker 7: ended up going to college movies.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Ever, they and I kept telling this guy, they never
- 18:07Speaker 1: set that up.
- 18:08Speaker 4: That's which college exist.
- 18:10Speaker 3: Well, clothes that look like they're about to go to college.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Are just robes.
- 18:15Speaker 1: So the spoiler of this is not it's that they
- 18:17Speaker 1: go to Hogwarts. It's this high school.
- 18:20Speaker 5: Sorry ahead, Well, the crazy thing is that you guys
- 18:22Speaker 5: cut the Harry Potter, all the Harry Potter trailers and
- 18:24Speaker 5: a lot of people. Their question is going to be
- 18:26Speaker 5: Jack Black ain't and that monkeys ain't in that. But
- 18:28Speaker 5: actually Hagrid is sort of as a monkey quality, So
- 18:31Speaker 5: I think that was probably large big.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Are Also, people do say that dementors are the monkeys
- 18:37Speaker 1: of the Harry Potter universe.
- 18:40Speaker 2: They say that a lot o.
- 18:41Speaker 3: They hear that every day.
- 18:43Speaker 1: If you're on the message boards, like I am still
- 18:45Speaker 1: in twenty.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Twenty two, that's a classic thing.
- 18:49Speaker 6: Then that's something they say all the time. Oh, here's
- 18:51Speaker 6: the question, what do you what's your guys favorite transition?
- 18:54Speaker 1: Oh?
- 18:54Speaker 5: I love talking about transit iris, iris open, Iris, I
- 18:59Speaker 5: love Little Circle goes a bit, love it.
- 19:02Speaker 2: You use it all the time. It's almost like a
- 19:04Speaker 2: more of a trailer for iris open.
- 19:06Speaker 4: I call that at r L T Reverse Looney Tunes
- 19:09Speaker 4: iris open.
- 19:10Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, iris open. People will get pretty you know,
- 19:13Speaker 5: people will often think that they're watching Star Wars because
- 19:16Speaker 5: that's pretty much the only place you see those now
- 19:18Speaker 5: or my trailers. So that's the way that George Lucas
- 19:20Speaker 5: and I kind of got linked up in the public
- 19:22Speaker 5: consciousness as to kind of equals because they both are
- 19:25Speaker 5: the only guys still doing that.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Are you guys friends?
- 19:28Speaker 5: Oh? Yes, we are very good friends. Pretty much. The
- 19:32Speaker 5: guy does not come up with an alien without telling me.
- 19:36Speaker 8: Yeah, and he's coming up with alien. Still, even though
- 19:40Speaker 8: he has nothing to do free.
- 19:44Speaker 5: Time, he pretty much spends a Saturday Sunday, pretty much
- 19:47Speaker 5: makes coffee, goes out. He's got a very beautiful wife.
- 19:50Speaker 5: They spend they have coffee together. Then he'll do pretty
- 19:53Speaker 5: much eight hours solid alien ideation.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Hey, weekends look like Do they come to you one
- 19:58Speaker 3: by wonder?
- 19:59Speaker 4: Do they come involved?
- 20:00Speaker 2: Is it just a name or is it an idea?
- 20:01Speaker 4: Does he send you a brief?
- 20:02Speaker 5: Well, it's a lot of voice notes. And it's funny
- 20:05Speaker 5: that you ask if they come all at once, because
- 20:07Speaker 5: very often, you know, I actually spend my Saturday with
- 20:09Speaker 5: my two kids, my two sons, David and Irene, and
- 20:14Speaker 5: so so often I'm out there, you know, taking them
- 20:23Speaker 5: to the zoo or taking them, and I'm being bombarded
- 20:26Speaker 5: with voice notes from George Lucas not to make.
- 20:29Speaker 2: One of them, please play one.
- 20:30Speaker 5: Oh my god, he's gonna fucking kill me for this, exposing.
- 20:35Speaker 3: His Saturday green alien, green alien.
- 20:47Speaker 6: Nobody who doesn't like him.
- 20:49Speaker 5: But you can imagine me at the zoo trying to say,
- 20:51Speaker 5: you know, trying to get the elephants to shut the
- 20:53Speaker 5: fuck up so that I can hear George Lucas's voice notes,
- 20:56Speaker 5: which that one was pretty clear, but a lot of
- 20:58Speaker 5: times he's recording them from across the room. He has
- 21:00Speaker 5: his wife to record on them fall od. So no,
- 21:04Speaker 5: it's not very good for me. But I say back
- 21:06Speaker 5: to him, I say, these are all great ideas.
- 21:12Speaker 6: Is it that thing where you can't respond?
- 21:13Speaker 1: Like sometimes I feel weird when someone sends me a
- 21:16Speaker 1: voice memo, like not responding in a voice memo. Also,
- 21:18Speaker 1: so to be like super encouraging or can you just
- 21:21Speaker 1: fire up a text?
- 21:22Speaker 5: Well, a lot of times I give him the double
- 21:24Speaker 5: exclamation point reaction that means I was I reacted strongly this.
- 21:30Speaker 5: And you know, I think the reason it's not just
- 21:32Speaker 5: the iris open that led George to be a friend
- 21:34Speaker 5: of mine, it's also that he knows that I've edited
- 21:37Speaker 5: a lot of trailers, seen a lot of aliens. I
- 21:39Speaker 5: have some insights and I don't know if it's okay,
- 21:41Speaker 5: but I have some insights into the aliens that are
- 21:42Speaker 5: forthcoming in the movies. Yeah, And so he's like, is
- 21:47Speaker 5: this alien going to be on the big screen before
- 21:49Speaker 5: I put him there?
- 21:50Speaker 2: So he's using you almost to text it out, how
- 21:52Speaker 2: the green alien?
- 21:58Speaker 5: And look me just say if you play on the
- 22:02Speaker 5: next Star Wars, and you might not be surprised to
- 22:07Speaker 5: find a green alien.
- 22:09Speaker 8: I bet you it's a green alien, green alienses. I
- 22:16Speaker 8: would say my favorite feature that I like to use
- 22:18Speaker 8: in trailers is I love to use a record scratch.
- 22:23Speaker 4: I think it's still fun.
- 22:24Speaker 8: I mean a music guy that called me the sounder, right,
- 22:26Speaker 8: I love a record scratch. Even in horror films, there's
- 22:29Speaker 8: always a record.
- 22:29Speaker 2: And you do it so well because you always take
- 22:31Speaker 2: kind of a log line, right, logine reaction from a movie.
- 22:34Speaker 2: It's kind of like one of those say what, yeah,
- 22:38Speaker 2: there's a there's a man chasing me with a knife.
- 22:40Speaker 5: Well, you're famous for using the moment from goodfill is
- 22:44Speaker 5: where Rayleota says, you're probably wondering how I got here?
- 22:47Speaker 5: You put it in all sorts of different movie.
- 22:49Speaker 2: I put it everywhere, actually your horror movie, horror movies.
- 22:53Speaker 8: I also did the trailer for The Revenant. I cut
- 22:55Speaker 8: it in the Revenue. You're probably wondering how I got Oh.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I love that when he's cutting his horse open
- 23:01Speaker 2: and freeze frames and you hear Raleota's voice going, you
- 23:04Speaker 2: probably would exactly.
- 23:06Speaker 6: I love the Hereditary trailer.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I was really good.
- 23:10Speaker 8: But that that poor girl's head on the ground.
- 23:13Speaker 6: I said, you're probably.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Wondering how I got it.
- 23:15Speaker 4: I went in there and I moved the lips with
- 23:17Speaker 4: my myself.
- 23:18Speaker 5: You did that on set, right, I did that on
- 23:20Speaker 5: the lips of on set.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Excuse me, you're gonna want this. You're gonna want this,
- 23:24Speaker 4: but trust me, I can see the future. You're gonna
- 23:27Speaker 4: want this.
- 23:27Speaker 6: That's bold.
- 23:28Speaker 2: Man.
- 23:28Speaker 8: Well, I love that ari Astra has me on set
- 23:31Speaker 8: for all of his movies. The lips, Yeah, to move
- 23:34Speaker 8: the list. I get full lip access for anything I
- 23:37Speaker 8: want to do. So I was there for Midsummer. I
- 23:40Speaker 8: was there for Hereditary. I mean it's it's it's an
- 23:42Speaker 8: honor to be there.
- 23:43Speaker 5: Well, I like to Midsummer when it shows the person
- 23:46Speaker 5: can I can I do a spoiler?
- 23:47Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 23:48Speaker 5: I like the trailers.
- 23:49Speaker 6: Come on, our wives haven't seen it yet, Yeah, we.
- 23:52Speaker 5: Will're not listening this crap?
- 23:53Speaker 3: No walk.
- 23:56Speaker 5: Well, you know, I like in Midsummer where you did
- 24:00Speaker 5: something pretty interesting because you have that one guy who
- 24:04Speaker 5: gets cut open and sort of splayed up on the
- 24:06Speaker 5: hung up in the shed and then you cut it
- 24:08Speaker 5: on his face and said, as far as I can remember,
- 24:10Speaker 5: I wanted to be a gangster. Yeah, it doesn't make
- 24:12Speaker 5: a lot of sense.
- 24:14Speaker 2: It was Good Fellows that I really like, kind of
- 24:19Speaker 2: see the movie.
- 24:20Speaker 4: It was exactly.
- 24:21Speaker 5: It was like, I have a lot of questions, and
- 24:23Speaker 5: that's what you want to plant an audiences.
- 24:24Speaker 8: And that's what I was getting. I was getting regret.
- 24:26Speaker 8: I was getting, well, this man's never gonna get to
- 24:27Speaker 8: be a gangster, but he's dead here.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Yeah, sure, and so I wanted to have that.
- 24:31Speaker 8: And yeah, I'm glad you noticed that a lot of
- 24:33Speaker 8: people actually completely don't see that in the trailer.
- 24:35Speaker 7: So you never heard from like Scorsese or anybody when
- 24:38Speaker 7: you rip off Good Fellaws.
- 24:40Speaker 8: I don't think it's ripping off. I mean he made
- 24:42Speaker 8: the movie and it's out there. As a trailer guy.
- 24:44Speaker 8: You take things from a movie and you put him in.
- 24:45Speaker 8: It doesn't matter which movie it's from, and it doesn't
- 24:47Speaker 8: matter which movie is advertising.
- 24:48Speaker 4: It's all meat. To me, it is meat. It's just meat,
- 24:52Speaker 4: So I can use it.
- 24:53Speaker 5: Let me just say that Raleiota you know he did.
- 24:57Speaker 5: He passed away. He was an amazing actor and cheers
- 25:03Speaker 5: and I think you know what I know about him,
- 25:06Speaker 5: he would have wanted to have his voice put into
- 25:08Speaker 5: a character that didn't really make a lot of sense.
- 25:12Speaker 2: I remember him always talking about hearing rumors, him always
- 25:14Speaker 2: talking about, like, you know, if my voice could be everywhere, that'd.
- 25:17Speaker 5: Be awesome, and even when it didn't make sense.
- 25:19Speaker 9: Right, Yeah, that's what about that famous quotes?
- 25:25Speaker 6: I have a book of film quotes.
- 25:27Speaker 2: And oh what's it called? Oh wow, it's called is
- 25:30Speaker 2: that big book of film quotes?
- 25:32Speaker 6: It's called Big Book of Films.
- 25:33Speaker 4: You didn't tell me that that you had this book
- 25:35Speaker 4: of films. I'm amazed that you.
- 25:38Speaker 6: Yeah, I have this book.
- 25:39Speaker 4: I never knew that.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I have this book and I bought it at
- 25:43Speaker 1: a Barnes and Noble.
- 25:44Speaker 4: That's crazy.
- 25:45Speaker 1: I bought it probably. Oh gosh, I want to say
- 25:48Speaker 1: seven years ago.
- 25:50Speaker 3: This is the first time you're hearing that he has
- 25:51Speaker 3: this book.
- 25:52Speaker 4: I didn't know he had this book.
- 25:53Speaker 3: That's crazy that you didn't know he has this book.
- 25:54Speaker 4: It's a book of film quotes.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I got it. It's one of those books that's
- 25:59Speaker 1: so generic. It doesn't even really have an author.
- 26:01Speaker 6: It's just like what it is.
- 26:03Speaker 5: Written by the internet, right, stuff from the internet.
- 26:06Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 26:07Speaker 5: Wow?
- 26:07Speaker 1: Yeah, So yeah, sorry, I feel like I'm making this
- 26:11Speaker 1: all about me. But I have my coffee table.
- 26:13Speaker 4: I didn't know that's awesome.
- 26:15Speaker 5: I'm sort of, you know, I'm not a reader. I
- 26:18Speaker 5: like things in one format that I can get through
- 26:21Speaker 5: in about you know, a minute and thirty seconds. That's
- 26:23Speaker 5: the trailer. So for me, books, movies, CDs, I'm not
- 26:29Speaker 5: that interested. I want it short. I want it fast,
- 26:31Speaker 5: you know. And so when I when I meet a
- 26:33Speaker 5: trailer editor who's a reader, I'm sort of I'll be honest.
- 26:37Speaker 5: I don't trust them very much.
- 26:38Speaker 6: Okay, well I should. I should clarify. These film quotes
- 26:41Speaker 6: are really short.
- 26:43Speaker 5: You read how many of them at a time?
- 26:46Speaker 1: I can, I swear to god, I can only sit
- 26:48Speaker 1: through like three So I'm reading like three sentences a
- 26:52Speaker 1: night tops talk.
- 26:54Speaker 5: All right, you're an editor.
- 27:00Speaker 3: Good point. How do you guys deal with long emails?
- 27:02Speaker 7: Because I can't get once it that's the subject And if.
- 27:06Speaker 2: The critic critique on your work, that's hard.
- 27:09Speaker 7: Yeah. And if the subject line doesn't give me the
- 27:11Speaker 7: full three act structure really quickly, I know, I don't
- 27:14Speaker 7: know what.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Let me just say email, I'm walking into read the
- 27:17Speaker 2: title game over to.
- 27:19Speaker 5: Me, and let me just say and I think you
- 27:20Speaker 5: probably mean the same thing as it's really a two
- 27:22Speaker 5: act structure because again the third act, I am not
- 27:24Speaker 5: interested in any of us.
- 27:26Speaker 3: But I need to tease my I need a little tea.
- 27:30Speaker 5: No conclusion, that's the second trailer.
- 27:33Speaker 2: The first trailer is all what's this movie about?
- 27:36Speaker 5: The second trailer is the.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Deftly hollows.
- 27:41Speaker 7: We did the Harvard logo and it was like, maybe
- 27:44Speaker 7: go to college.
- 27:45Speaker 2: That is confusing everybody going why.
- 27:50Speaker 6: I gotta say this was him?
- 27:52Speaker 1: This all him because he thought that he could maybe
- 27:55Speaker 1: trick jk Rowling into writing them into college for the
- 27:58Speaker 1: next movie.
- 27:59Speaker 3: I was so bad.
- 28:01Speaker 5: Well, I mean and then you know I got I
- 28:03Speaker 5: can't really get down you because one of the best
- 28:06Speaker 5: trailers I think we all know is Social Network, you know,
- 28:11Speaker 5: I think that's the Children's So for me as a
- 28:15Speaker 5: trailer editor, I'm always trying to have Harvard be the
- 28:18Speaker 5: last thing that's mentioned, because that movie actually takes place
- 28:20Speaker 5: at Harvard.
- 28:21Speaker 7: That must have been it, because like when they flash
- 28:23Speaker 7: that Harvard in.
- 28:24Speaker 3: Their trailer and it's like, you're it's just.
- 28:28Speaker 2: It's a.
- 28:31Speaker 3: It's what is it? It's how did I get here?
- 28:38Speaker 4: Yes, you probably know how I got here.
- 28:42Speaker 8: Yeah, I I you know, Aaron sore Canady, even Fincher
- 28:45Speaker 8: got together and they said, we're such big names. No
- 28:47Speaker 8: one can know that anyone else worked on this ever,
- 28:50Speaker 8: So I'm not allowed to really mention that I work.
- 28:53Speaker 8: I can say I'm friends with the person who edited.
- 28:57Speaker 6: Like you're friends with Mickey.
- 28:58Speaker 8: Manland Us, I'm friends with the Social network trailer editor.
- 29:04Speaker 5: And look, speaking of things that you're not allowed to know,
- 29:08Speaker 5: do you all find now? Movies are kept under such
- 29:12Speaker 5: lock and key, particularly the Marvel movies, things like that.
- 29:16Speaker 2: The NBA's I've had to sign.
- 29:18Speaker 5: So what they've been doing literally at my trailer house,
- 29:21Speaker 5: and I wonder if they've been doing it with you guys,
- 29:23Speaker 5: is they'll send us the movie. They say, we need
- 29:26Speaker 5: a trailer of this, but they give it a different name,
- 29:30Speaker 5: like Rachel's bot Mitzvah. You think you're editing a video
- 29:33Speaker 5: for about Mitzvah, but really you're.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Yeah, and they use that name every time, and I go,
- 29:38Speaker 3: I've already done Rachel.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like dummy sides. They do it all the
- 29:44Speaker 3: fucking time.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Man. One was just called Timmy's first Birthday, and I
- 29:49Speaker 2: was fucking confused. Yeah, because wars to me, there's no cake.
- 29:55Speaker 2: He's supposed to be one. What is this guy shrinking down?
- 29:58Speaker 2: I couldn't figure it out.
- 30:00Speaker 8: I'm working on the trailer for the newest Avatar, Avatar three,
- 30:05Speaker 8: and it came in as rock Os Briss.
- 30:09Speaker 5: Is always this.
- 30:10Speaker 9: Way, always this way.
- 30:22Speaker 3: I wish it didn't.
- 30:23Speaker 2: I mean, I wish they.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Could just say this is King Kong Fireball Island.
- 30:28Speaker 2: But yeah, I love kall.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Ladybird too, And I'm like, I know it's not Ladybird too.
- 30:36Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly, you ladybirds bris And then you're like, what.
- 30:40Speaker 2: What you know?
- 30:42Speaker 6: I wanted like four ladybirds bris and they're not. They're
- 30:45Speaker 6: never the same. Was always this way.
- 30:47Speaker 7: It's better than before because it hasn't always been this way.
- 30:51Speaker 7: Back then for School of Rock, they locked us in
- 30:53Speaker 7: a room and we couldn't get out. We couldn't get
- 30:57Speaker 7: the footage. It wasn't on our desktop, it was on there.
- 31:00Speaker 4: Because there's no way anyone saw that movie coming.
- 31:02Speaker 2: It's like like nothing.
- 31:06Speaker 4: It was not a big by the way when they.
- 31:07Speaker 6: Locked us up, I don't know.
- 31:09Speaker 1: There were a few Jack Black fans sitting outside the
- 31:12Speaker 1: trailer house just waiting, waiting. They said, we saw on
- 31:16Speaker 1: deadline of movies coming.
- 31:19Speaker 5: They were at every tailor house. They were kind of
- 31:21Speaker 5: camped out of every place where movies are made. Really,
- 31:23Speaker 5: there are a lot of these people.
- 31:26Speaker 6: Internet, so they had to spread cast a really widet.
- 31:28Speaker 4: Well.
- 31:28Speaker 5: I remember you guys edited the trailer for School of Rock.
- 31:32Speaker 5: You got out of the room and then you thought,
- 31:34Speaker 5: I'm going to make a brief change, and then you wrote, directed,
- 31:37Speaker 5: and edited the movie Room. You got the idea for
- 31:40Speaker 5: a room from being locked.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, we haven't talked about that yet. A beautiful
- 31:45Speaker 2: movie award waiting movie.
- 31:48Speaker 7: We're here for trailers, We're not here for films. But
- 31:51Speaker 7: I'll say we did have a little run in filmmaking.
- 31:54Speaker 1: And sometimes you don't make a movie. Sometimes a movie
- 31:57Speaker 1: happens to you.
- 31:59Speaker 6: You had no choice but to make it.
- 32:00Speaker 2: I actually ended up cutting that trailer for you guys.
- 32:04Speaker 2: It's such a crazy and what was it like?
- 32:06Speaker 8: What are the biggest differences between making a movie and
- 32:10Speaker 8: making a trailer.
- 32:10Speaker 4: For you guys?
- 32:11Speaker 6: So it's so interesting. What we found was when you
- 32:14Speaker 6: are making a movie, you have to know how it ends.
- 32:17Speaker 6: So it's like this is really it's like kind.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Of a mind fuck, and it's not written I guess
- 32:23Speaker 2: for it's not already filmed for you, which is crazy.
- 32:26Speaker 7: And we learned what scenes were. Yeah, yeah, And but
- 32:30Speaker 7: I mean here's the thing. If you're going to do
- 32:31Speaker 7: a full feature, if you're like in the trailer scene
- 32:34Speaker 7: and you want to like transition to full full length narratives,
- 32:37Speaker 7: I'll say, get a good support system, because you want
- 32:39Speaker 7: to make sure that people at home have somewhere to
- 32:41Speaker 7: go and have someone to talk to. And thank God,
- 32:48Speaker 7: Thanks God, I thank every God God.
- 32:53Speaker 6: I know that, I think every God for that.
- 32:56Speaker 5: So movie, I know, movie production is not so regular
- 32:59Speaker 5: in the way that trailer eight hours a day. So
- 33:01Speaker 5: you're saying your wives, you guys run set twelve hours
- 33:03Speaker 5: a day, and what your wives were talking and hanging out, Well.
- 33:10Speaker 10: You guys, you just tell bullshit too, I know you. Yeah,
- 33:14Speaker 10: I'm just something there.
- 33:15Speaker 5: I just don't understand if you leave and they have
- 33:18Speaker 5: so much time to be like, I just how how
- 33:22Speaker 5: what state of their friendship?
- 33:23Speaker 2: I mean, they're.
- 33:24Speaker 6: Really really good friends.
- 33:26Speaker 1: So every time it's proportional to the hour that we're gone,
- 33:30Speaker 1: like they can't get enough of each other, and so
- 33:33Speaker 1: like if we're only working eat day eight hours, like sure, yeah,
- 33:36Speaker 1: they'll come home after that eight hours after hanging out.
- 33:40Speaker 1: But if we're gone for longer, you know, they're not mad.
- 33:43Speaker 1: They say, oh fuck yeah, I'm so excited like that.
- 33:47Speaker 4: I do not like.
- 33:48Speaker 5: No, we told them, I do not like the wife
- 33:50Speaker 5: saying hell yeah, and I'll send to you when you leave,
- 33:53Speaker 5: because I do not think that that's right.
- 33:55Speaker 3: No, she said.
- 33:56Speaker 7: We said we have to go to Atlanta for eight months,
- 33:58Speaker 7: and both of them just got so freaking excited.
- 34:02Speaker 6: They were so excited.
- 34:03Speaker 3: That's how that movie happened.
- 34:05Speaker 5: Guys, I asked you something. Are they in love?
- 34:08Speaker 6: They're really good friends.
- 34:10Speaker 4: I would let it lie.
- 34:13Speaker 8: I don't think we're gonna break through tonight, so I
- 34:15Speaker 8: think we gotta let them have the fun.
- 34:20Speaker 2: I'm gonna ask the hard question. I'm gonna ask it,
- 34:23Speaker 2: what's your favorite editing tool in Adobe? Because I know
- 34:26Speaker 2: we're all Adobe heads. There's no freaking app.
- 34:28Speaker 3: Don't overthink first thing it comes to your mind. First
- 34:31Speaker 3: thing it comes to your mind too.
- 34:33Speaker 4: Yeah, the same feature.
- 34:38Speaker 7: Literally, I'm god, our favorite part of a Ferrari is
- 34:42Speaker 7: the seatbelt.
- 34:43Speaker 4: I'm sorry, would we be able to do anything. If
- 34:45Speaker 4: we couldn't save.
- 34:48Speaker 5: Actually, yes, because that trailer park boys were a bit reckless,
- 34:51Speaker 5: and we do not. If the trailer don't get done
- 34:54Speaker 5: before the computer, it does not, it don't get up.
- 34:59Speaker 5: We do not, sake. He goes from and by the way,
- 35:02Speaker 5: if we get a note back from the studio saying,
- 35:04Speaker 5: actually the scene isn't allowed to be in the trailer,
- 35:06Speaker 5: maybe there's nudity, maybe there's a spoiler, we have to
- 35:10Speaker 5: reconstruct the entire thing because we already debuted everything.
- 35:13Speaker 2: Important to export for you. I take it.
- 35:15Speaker 5: You know what my favorite editors tool is what my
- 35:19Speaker 5: Phillips drill because I put it through the hard drive
- 35:24Speaker 5: all the time. Guy, because I'm sort of to be reckless.
- 35:28Speaker 6: Wow, crazy, what are you drilling into the hard drive?
- 35:32Speaker 5: I drill the hard drive so it doesn't work anymore.
- 35:34Speaker 5: I put a big hole in it.
- 35:35Speaker 2: And hard drives.
- 35:37Speaker 5: I take my take. This is something a lesson I'm
- 35:41Speaker 5: trying to give my kids. I say, don't David and Irene.
- 35:44Speaker 5: David Irene is out well, David and Irene. We I'll
- 35:49Speaker 5: pick them and I'll say, you know, you can be
- 35:52Speaker 5: You basically have two options in life, be cool or
- 35:55Speaker 5: be a fucking not that cool at all.
- 35:59Speaker 3: To that's so good to teach your kids.
- 36:02Speaker 6: That's so real, that's actually really true.
- 36:05Speaker 2: That's such a good parent to not be cool as
- 36:08Speaker 2: to be cool, or to not be that.
- 36:10Speaker 3: Cool cool at all, not be that cool at all.
- 36:13Speaker 8: Dang, what are your favorite tools? If I'm such a
- 36:16Speaker 8: freaking kiss.
- 36:16Speaker 2: As slide, I'll say it. I love the slide feature.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Watched the whole movie just sliding on by real quick.
- 36:26Speaker 2: You're doing that with your finger, Well, it's a slide maneuver.
- 36:28Speaker 2: It feels like, you know you're doing something special. And
- 36:31Speaker 2: three l's for.
- 36:35Speaker 4: You know, I love three ls.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Three l's being to fly. You get to watch all
- 36:39Speaker 2: my Marvel characters talking a high pitched voice.
- 36:41Speaker 5: Three l's. That's what he took when he hits saved
- 36:43Speaker 5: three times. Don't talk about these things are weird, Like,
- 36:53Speaker 5: let's be honest, they're not that normal.
- 36:56Speaker 4: We know that's what's.
- 36:57Speaker 3: Interesting to you, Like what's it? What is what is the.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Like?
- 37:05Speaker 3: What did it do to affect you? This whole species.
- 37:09Speaker 5: I don't like to think about something that's a little
- 37:11Speaker 5: bit one thing a little.
- 37:12Speaker 1: Bit Okay, you get added like Italian ice for being
- 37:18Speaker 1: kind of sorbetan kind of ice.
- 37:20Speaker 5: Cream if a were wolf reading and I get really bad.
- 37:22Speaker 5: I can't answer your other question because I'm still thinking.
- 37:28Speaker 2: Dang, what are you guys? Just favorite tools?
- 37:31Speaker 3: Mine's apple quit, Time to go home.
- 37:38Speaker 6: Yeah, I do most of the editing. Fucking do that
- 37:46Speaker 6: kind of the ideas.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Guy, that's fun. You kind of sit in the back
- 37:49Speaker 2: and think about that's where Harvard came from.
- 37:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I just went to school university, university.
- 37:54Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't.
- 37:58Speaker 1: I'll be honest you guys. I don't have a create
- 38:00Speaker 1: a bone in my entire body. I've never come up
- 38:02Speaker 1: with an idea in my entire life. So I can't
- 38:05Speaker 1: really do this.
- 38:07Speaker 7: Once I give the book, once I gave a coloring book.
- 38:10Speaker 3: He put it through the shredder.
- 38:12Speaker 6: Whoa which is kind.
- 38:13Speaker 5: Of known each other? Brother?
- 38:17Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 38:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean our parents are friends.
- 38:22Speaker 6: Yeah, they're really good friends.
- 38:26Speaker 4: Your parents hang out when you guys are at work too.
- 38:28Speaker 1: Oh, they can't hang out.
- 38:33Speaker 6: They can't hang out any other time because.
- 38:35Speaker 3: Our parents and our wives all share a car.
- 38:40Speaker 5: Why is that okay?
- 38:42Speaker 1: So the people in our lives, we've sworn them to
- 38:47Speaker 1: a very strict contract. He said, if you well I
- 38:52Speaker 1: should know.
- 38:53Speaker 6: I should just have it out in the open.
- 38:54Speaker 1: They said, if we're going to have a relationship, we
- 38:57Speaker 1: need to because we don't have a very clear understanding
- 39:02Speaker 1: of most things.
- 39:02Speaker 6: We need things to be laid out in black and white.
- 39:05Speaker 1: If we're going to continue to have a relationship in
- 39:07Speaker 1: some way, we need to know exactly how you stand
- 39:10Speaker 1: to the other person. So we have a chart outline
- 39:14Speaker 1: of who is friends and who isn't, and how much
- 39:17Speaker 1: time they have to spend with one another.
- 39:19Speaker 7: Yeah, that's just how we I mean, we're artists. I mean,
- 39:23Speaker 7: everybody at this table. We all have weird shit, you
- 39:25Speaker 7: know what I mean, And that's how we do it.
- 39:26Speaker 5: It freaks. When you become a trailer editor, you get
- 39:30Speaker 5: a lot of power over other people because they know
- 39:33Speaker 5: that you have the ability to synthesize.
- 39:36Speaker 4: I'm standing learning click.
- 39:37Speaker 8: I mean, you're you got the remote literally you can change.
- 39:40Speaker 5: Literally I do because he gave me that, because I
- 39:42Speaker 5: edited the trailer for that. I made it.
- 39:43Speaker 4: Really gave you the remote.
- 39:45Speaker 2: Yea, all it was just one big fart joke that
- 39:50Speaker 2: was so fun.
- 39:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I had a lot in the trailer.
- 39:54Speaker 8: Here's the thing, and this is a question that I
- 39:56Speaker 8: have Okay, someone gives you a movie that isn't that good.
- 40:00Speaker 8: I think that the trailer editor's dilemma is do I
- 40:05Speaker 8: cut this movie trailer together to make it look bad
- 40:07Speaker 8: and so people don't see this fucking badass awf old
- 40:11Speaker 8: bunk movie. Or do I manipulate them and make a
- 40:15Speaker 8: trailer that looks good and so these people that don't.
- 40:18Speaker 4: Deserve the money make money.
- 40:20Speaker 8: Off of this bad product, and I manipulate the world
- 40:24Speaker 8: into giving them the money that they don't deserve. Like,
- 40:27Speaker 8: how do you guys feel like we are in a
- 40:29Speaker 8: way manipulators.
- 40:31Speaker 6: Yeah, there's blood on our hands for sure.
- 40:33Speaker 5: Yeah, especially if someone really wanted to see a movie,
- 40:36Speaker 5: drove over to the theater really fast, slammed into a
- 40:39Speaker 5: little kid who was trying to cross the street.
- 40:40Speaker 7: You're talking about, Yeah, yeah, oh yeah.
- 40:45Speaker 8: What's the biggest boat on your hands other than if
- 40:47Speaker 8: that happened ever confirmed?
- 40:50Speaker 4: What is the biggest boat on your hands.
- 40:51Speaker 8: In a trailer that you made for a good trailer
- 40:54Speaker 8: for a bad movie.
- 40:55Speaker 1: Well, we really made Mama Mia two look like it
- 40:59Speaker 1: was going to be way more about Amanda Seifried's pregnancy
- 41:01Speaker 1: than it was.
- 41:03Speaker 7: She had two days on set, and I mean so
- 41:05Speaker 7: we had like em like it was really.
- 41:08Speaker 1: I just like I cannot sleep at night because I
- 41:10Speaker 1: know there are so many people looking for a pregnancy
- 41:13Speaker 1: narrative who drove to that theater expecting a lot of.
- 41:17Speaker 6: That, and they didn't get that at all from the movie.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Surely revealed that in the last like five or so
- 41:22Speaker 1: minutes of the film.
- 41:23Speaker 7: And listen, they all drove to that theater. And we
- 41:25Speaker 7: don't know what happened on their way there to the theater.
- 41:28Speaker 6: We have no idea.
- 41:29Speaker 7: I hope to god they had license and they drove responding,
- 41:31Speaker 7: I hope to God everyone is alive.
- 41:34Speaker 5: And if there were a fender bender, you know you
- 41:35Speaker 5: want to hope. I think most movie trailer editors go
- 41:38Speaker 5: to sleep saying, gosh, I hope if there's a fender bender.
- 41:41Speaker 5: Both people have insurance because it can be every night.
- 41:46Speaker 2: The last thing about right before I shut my eyes,
- 41:48Speaker 2: oh gosh, there's a fender bender.
- 41:50Speaker 6: I hope, because because here's the thing you identifica.
- 41:55Speaker 5: You're looking at this scratch on the cards, very small,
- 41:59Speaker 5: but the coster of Harry can sometimes be a thousand at.
- 42:02Speaker 2: It keeps us up. It's the small things to keep
- 42:04Speaker 2: us up.
- 42:05Speaker 3: Blood on your hands.
- 42:07Speaker 2: My biggest blood on my hands I made. I made
- 42:12Speaker 2: the trailer for Marror's Story look like a Marvel.
- 42:14Speaker 5: Movie, and that was old habits.
- 42:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I got confused. Old Habits die hard. It was
- 42:21Speaker 2: kind of like hard cuts.
- 42:23Speaker 3: Where'd you get that footage of Robert Downey Jr?
- 42:25Speaker 2: Robert down So I stole it from Iron Man one.
- 42:29Speaker 5: Well, Le's be honest, that guy talks a lot.
- 42:31Speaker 2: He's pretty much all run running.
- 42:35Speaker 5: Him talking.
- 42:35Speaker 2: Why did you do it? It was, Well, I just
- 42:37Speaker 2: got confused, you know. I kind of messed up my
- 42:40Speaker 2: labeling in my edits. So all of a sudden, Marror
- 42:42Speaker 2: Story there was a scene in there I'd never seen before,
- 42:45Speaker 2: and it was Robert down Jr. Wearing like a red
- 42:48Speaker 2: power suit talking about how marriage is over and over
- 42:51Speaker 2: eight and all this stuff. I thought, yeah, that's it,
- 42:53Speaker 2: that's probably part of the movie. Turns out it was
- 42:55Speaker 2: a cut scene from Iron Man one, so I cut it. Unfortunately,
- 43:00Speaker 2: people were pretty pissed when they walked in. There was
- 43:02Speaker 2: no shoot him ups, there was no big explosions, there
- 43:05Speaker 2: was nothing to that.
- 43:06Speaker 5: And especially because Adam Driver is a very big, strong guy. Yeah,
- 43:10Speaker 5: you're probably watching the movie for the first forty minutes.
- 43:13Speaker 5: You think this guy is a very strong guy. So
- 43:15Speaker 5: I'm probably in the right movie because he's well, yeah.
- 43:18Speaker 2: The story, we'll watch it the first forty minutes. It's
- 43:20Speaker 2: just mostly about how strong. Yeah. So, and you know
- 43:24Speaker 2: in the trailer, I'm doing my classic Marvel thing of
- 43:27Speaker 2: action scene, action scene, action scene thirty seconds for hot
- 43:30Speaker 2: body reveal, you know. So that's what we did. We
- 43:33Speaker 2: did action scene of them getting divorced, action scene of
- 43:35Speaker 2: them getting divorced, action scene of them getting divorced, thirty
- 43:38Speaker 2: seconds of Adam driver body, you know, just like a
- 43:43Speaker 2: really chiseled guy. So yeah, that's probably the biggest blood
- 43:47Speaker 2: in my hands. A kid died, whoa, whoa. I don't
- 43:52Speaker 2: want to talk about.
- 43:53Speaker 5: It, but a kid I'd.
- 43:55Speaker 2: Rather not, But a kid did die.
- 43:56Speaker 7: Listen, we just told you about our weird charts with
- 43:58Speaker 7: our wives and our family.
- 44:00Speaker 4: Blame what the.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I cut the trailer so quickly the flashes caused
- 44:10Speaker 2: them to.
- 44:10Speaker 4: Have as oh god. Yeah. Yeah.
- 44:13Speaker 5: So it's an occupation, and that's that's the first thing
- 44:16Speaker 5: they teach you in your first year of trailer editing school,
- 44:18Speaker 5: which we know it's a seven years program. The first
- 44:20Speaker 5: year is all about I went to Harvard, the one
- 44:23Speaker 5: they were talking about.
- 44:24Speaker 7: But yeah, but they don't give you your mouse until
- 44:31Speaker 7: you learn about not putting lights.
- 44:35Speaker 5: Oh yeah, Well, the first year is very experimental. It's
- 44:38Speaker 5: mostly they send you out into the wilderness area sort
- 44:41Speaker 5: of Papua New Guinea area, and they give you, you know,
- 44:44Speaker 5: a rock I saw and a couple of apples. They say,
- 44:47Speaker 5: make a trailer, and so you know, obviously it requires
- 44:51Speaker 5: the box.
- 44:52Speaker 2: What's the best trailer you saw out of that experience?
- 44:55Speaker 2: I saw some crazy ones.
- 44:56Speaker 8: I mean all those film school trailers. I always just
- 44:58Speaker 8: saw a bunch of people, know, drug dealers and guns,
- 45:02Speaker 8: fight up, so.
- 45:03Speaker 1: Many cigarettes, cigarettes star wipes.
- 45:06Speaker 4: Yea, the Apple star wiping across the rock yea.
- 45:10Speaker 5: So it's probably that one or the one like that, something.
- 45:13Speaker 4: Like what I love too.
- 45:16Speaker 8: I mean, we don't talk about this as trailer editors
- 45:18Speaker 8: a lot, but something that is pretty important is, you know,
- 45:21Speaker 8: much like law enforcement, if you screw up, they ask
- 45:25Speaker 8: you to turn in your mouth.
- 45:27Speaker 2: You know.
- 45:28Speaker 1: Oh God, you reminded me of It's really hard how
- 45:30Speaker 1: to do now because a lot of times I edit
- 45:33Speaker 1: on my laptops connected.
- 45:35Speaker 6: I have to have to cut out the track pad
- 45:38Speaker 6: with a song.
- 45:38Speaker 4: They make you, they make you.
- 45:40Speaker 5: I keep my my kitchen knives very short because I
- 45:43Speaker 5: know that the authorities could march through my door any
- 45:46Speaker 5: second and make me cut out my track that I respect.
- 45:48Speaker 5: The back the Blue, Yeah.
- 45:54Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, okay, So what's what's before we wrap up?
- 45:58Speaker 6: What's uh? What's everybody editing right now?
- 46:02Speaker 3: What are you guys excited for her to.
- 46:03Speaker 2: Talk about it?
- 46:04Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 46:04Speaker 5: Well to talk about this stuff, well, I can tell you, guys. Yeah,
- 46:08Speaker 5: I was shipped a trailer now, of course the classic subterfuge.
- 46:13Speaker 5: The name I was given was Annabel gives birth to
- 46:15Speaker 5: two bouncing baby boys. But I don't think that's what
- 46:19Speaker 5: it is.
- 46:20Speaker 4: Bounce it, yeah, because the first.
- 46:22Speaker 5: Thing that happens is a gorilla cross his frame and
- 46:24Speaker 5: then actually should have been sent to you guys. And
- 46:26Speaker 5: I do not mean to cause any I mean, I mean.
- 46:30Speaker 6: We're cool.
- 46:31Speaker 5: Listen.
- 46:31Speaker 3: Yeah, we're financing a new film.
- 46:34Speaker 5: So the first thing that happens is a gorilla cross
- 46:35Speaker 5: the flame frame punches out Jack Black. I feel weird
- 46:40Speaker 5: about this, no, I feel yeah, I don't know anything
- 46:47Speaker 5: about it. It's called Annabelle's bouncing baby boys or delivered.
- 46:50Speaker 5: It could be something else, but it just so happens
- 46:52Speaker 5: that there is a gorilla Jack Black, and they seem
- 46:54Speaker 5: to be on some sort of land mass that's in
- 46:56Speaker 5: the sea. But look, it don't it does not matter
- 47:00Speaker 5: what called that they give you. Annabel gives birth to
- 47:04Speaker 5: said that to you.
- 47:05Speaker 6: I'm just curious.
- 47:06Speaker 5: Uh we got about three weeks ago. I've been cutting it.
- 47:11Speaker 2: How big is the gorilla?
- 47:13Speaker 5: It's not it's not small. It's really quite big. It
- 47:17Speaker 5: has it's about you know, I don't want to say
- 47:20Speaker 5: Empires building size, but it could wrap its body around
- 47:24Speaker 5: sort of a spire.
- 47:25Speaker 6: Have you you talked to Matt lately?
- 47:29Speaker 2: Mad?
- 47:29Speaker 6: Is anything weird?
- 47:31Speaker 4: Boss?
- 47:31Speaker 5: Is that your wife?
- 47:32Speaker 2: No?
- 47:32Speaker 5: Is that your wife?
- 47:33Speaker 3: No, Matt's not my wife.
- 47:36Speaker 1: That's our that's our contact on the at the kingk you. No, no, no,
- 47:40Speaker 1: it's fine, though we we will.
- 47:42Speaker 5: The movie doesn't look that good. It looks I mean,
- 47:44Speaker 5: Jack Black is doing some pretty funny so funny guy.
- 47:47Speaker 5: But yeah, anyway, so look, I don't mean to cause
- 47:50Speaker 5: any problems that no, No.
- 47:51Speaker 7: It's okay.
- 47:51Speaker 3: Hey, listen, jobs shopping and out for all of us.
- 47:54Speaker 3: I think this is normal.
- 47:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just so. What I'm cutting right now is
- 48:00Speaker 2: called Tony's Dad's funeral. That's that's the Burner name. It
- 48:06Speaker 2: starts this weird thing. It's kind of like the school
- 48:08Speaker 2: and they're like looking for substitute, and for some reason,
- 48:13Speaker 2: it's just oh man, you know, I'm realizing it's a
- 48:15Speaker 2: school for monkeys or like bigger than monkeys and looking
- 48:19Speaker 2: for a substitute. And I guess I'm really they find
- 48:23Speaker 2: Jack Black and they he loves music.
- 48:25Speaker 6: That's so interesting. How big are the monkeys?
- 48:27Speaker 2: Again, I wouldn't say they're small.
- 48:31Speaker 7: Wait, but this isn't Annabelle giving birds to two bouncing
- 48:34Speaker 7: baby boy.
- 48:34Speaker 2: No, no, no, no no, this is Tony's Dad's funeral.
- 48:37Speaker 3: It's a completely so there's a different move.
- 48:40Speaker 8: I'm editing a movie called Well. Burner titles Ezekiel's Confirmations,
- 48:45Speaker 8: and right now, I mean, I'm I'm almost positive that
- 48:49Speaker 8: it's the Meg too. But okay, yeah, shark horror movie.
- 48:56Speaker 8: This is my jam, you know, and I'm excited. I
- 48:57Speaker 8: added a really fun scary song on it. I'm doing
- 49:02Speaker 8: baby Shark and a minor key.
- 49:07Speaker 4: Baby Shark do baby Shark. So when I get into it.
- 49:10Speaker 8: I go, baby shark, Do do do, baby shark.
- 49:18Speaker 5: This guy knows music inside.
- 49:20Speaker 3: Like my mind, God, what you just did, right?
- 49:23Speaker 2: I shouldinitely be something else.
- 49:25Speaker 4: Music's a tool. Music's a tool.
- 49:30Speaker 5: It's on my life.
- 49:32Speaker 8: But I will say I got to this part in
- 49:35Speaker 8: the trailer. I've been you know, I've been scrubbing and scrubbing, scrubbing, scrubbing,
- 49:37Speaker 8: looking for moments. There's a part where Riley Kok's character
- 49:42Speaker 8: gets eaten and she goes inside the meg's big belly
- 49:46Speaker 8: and there's there's a Gorilla's.
- 49:50Speaker 6: A gorilla in the stomach, but the fuck.
- 49:52Speaker 4: Jack Black is feeding him peanut.
- 49:54Speaker 5: Butter like a bonding moment or like a I mean, I.
- 49:58Speaker 8: Haven't watched it. I'm taking out of con texts. It's
- 50:00Speaker 8: definitely throwing it on the half second at the end.
- 50:02Speaker 6: That's really this.
- 50:03Speaker 1: Is really weird. We're definitely gonna have to look into this.
- 50:08Speaker 1: In the meantime, we are cutting together a trailer that
- 50:11Speaker 1: actually our wives made. They sent us this film called Carol.
- 50:18Speaker 3: And we thought it was a great film. They yeah,
- 50:20Speaker 3: they did.
- 50:21Speaker 1: About these two lesbian lovers and they hate their.
- 50:26Speaker 2: They send you sorry because Carol's a released movie. Did
- 50:29Speaker 2: they just send you the movie Carol?
- 50:31Speaker 5: Yeah, you said they made.
- 50:32Speaker 3: Carrol, So they sent us a movie with Kate Blanchette.
- 50:36Speaker 2: Okay, Okay, Rooney Mara.
- 50:39Speaker 4: Did they send it to you for you to watch
- 50:40Speaker 4: it or to cut a trailer? Well?
- 50:42Speaker 1: No, we've never been sent a movie just to watch.
- 50:44Speaker 1: But yeah, I guess that could be the implication.
- 50:46Speaker 3: I think they probably.
- 50:47Speaker 7: Talked about it because they're friends, and they're.
- 50:50Speaker 6: Such good friends.
